Earlier in the year, the Federal Government announced an initiative to help first home buyers save a deposit for the purchase of a home using their superannuation account. The initiative will allow first home buyers to save up to $30,000 in their super fund for a deposit. The key thing to note about this initiative is, while the deposit can be built up in a superannuation account, the deposit is not coming from the compulsory superannuation contributions. Instead the savings will be an additional contribution/saving made by first home buyers. As an example, let’s take Joshua who is 23 and has been working full time for five years, with a base income of $50,000 a year. His employer contributes the compulsory 9.5 per cent of his base salary (or $4,750) to Joshua’s superannuation account each year and he has $40,000 in his superannuation account. The balance of his account at this point has only come from compulsory contributions from his employer. While Joshua has more than $30,000 in superannuation, this can’t be used as a deposit to put towards his first home.
