TO SEE WHAT’S NEXT New data shows that first home buyer couples need to spend an average of six years and eight months saving a deposit for an entry-level house in Sydney. But not everyone wants to wait that long, and for many younger couples buying property just isn’t a priority. Principal at One Agency, Andrew Reeves (pictured), said that under the current property market, many people are happy to sit and rent for now. “There’s always been a strong market for people that want to rent long term, but I think we’re going to see more of this,” he said. “With the decline in the sales world in regards to people who are thinking of buying property, because we’re anticipating that prices are going to come down, there’s a lot of people out there who are thinking that maybe now isn’t the right time.” The data, from Domain Group’s First Home Buyers Report, says the time taken to save a 20 per cent deposit for an entry-priced unit – costing $593,000 – has stayed the same year on year, at five years and nine months, while
saving for a house now takes one month longer. The report shows that an average-income couple can in theory break into the market buying an apartment in Penrith after an average of three years and eight months of combined saving, with a Penrith house taking years longer depending on size. Mr Reeves said that in the current market, home ownership isn’t the right decision for everyone. He said that while the market has changed over the past few years, choosing to rent is a perfectly acceptable path for many people. “75 to 80 per cent of every landlord out there would like a long term tenant,” Mr Reeves said. “With the demand for living in the Penrith area because of the airport, more job opportunities and affordability, the demand for rental properties will continue to be high. “I see that as a huge advantage for investors.” Have you decided to give up on the ‘great Australian dream’ and rent instead?
