nown as the ‘The Odd Couple’, Penrith locals John Parsons and Nadim Joukhadar will be going on the adventure of a lifetime – they just don’t know where to.

Over the course of five days, 75 teams will take part in what is known as the ‘Mystery Box Rally’, an event that has raised over $500,000 since its inception in 2013 for research into brain cancer.

Not only is there no prior knowledge of where they will be driving, but they’ll only find out what kind of car they’ll be taking on the rally the night before the adventure begins in November.

“It’s an auction and you don’t see the car until it’s revealed after you’ve made your bid and won – a pretty scary thought if you ask me,” Mr Joukhadar said.

The pair have known each other for over 10 years and refer to themselves as ‘The Odd Couple’ because of their chosen teams in NRL, one supporting the Roosters and the other supporting the Panthers.

“We have a common desire to see a breakthrough in the research of brain cancer because we have both experienced the pain of watching someone close to us go through the suffering that is associated with the disease,” Mr Joukhadar said.

“We’re taking a leap of faith, out of our comfort zones for a cause that is important to us both.”

The funds raised will go to the Cancer Council to fund their research initiatives.

Budget promises key improvements Penrith electorate to see investment across a range of areas thanks to State Budget DALE DRINKWATER

ocial housing, infrastructure and early access to disability insurance are just part of a long list of investments in this year’s State Budget for the Penrith region.

The release of the NSW Budget on Tuesday outlined promises to the people of Penrith to improve their community through first class infrastructure and services.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said these promises have been made possible by strong fiscal discipline by the Baird Liberal Government over the last four years.

“It’s also important to note that none of these commitments have been funded from the lease of the ‘poles and wires’, which will bring an additional $20 billion in infrastructure spending,” he said.

Mr Ayres said the best is yet to come, as Budget increases from last year enable the State Government to deliver more record services.

“Whether it is in health, education, transport or family or community services... each of these key areas have seen growth in their budgets from last year of more than five per cent,” he said.

The 2015 State Budget has promised the Penrith region: – Almost $17.3 million for social and accessible housing in Penrith, Cranebrook and Kingswood; – More than $1.5 million to GREAT Community Transport to provide services to assist the frail, young people with disabilities and their carers; – $14.4 million to commence major construction of the Nepean River Green Bridge; – $2.5 million to commence planning for the upgrade of the Ross Street and Great Western Highway intersection; – $2.9 million to continue planning for the future upgrade of Mulgoa Road, including the Jane Street intersection; – $275,000 to complete the planning and scoping study for intersections on The Northern Road between the M4 and Great Western Highway and on Erskine Park Road between Mamre Road and the M4; – More than $2.5 million for slope repairs on the M4 at Lapstone and Glenbrook; – $1.8 million to continue planning for a new Smart Motorway system for the M4; – $1 million to extend the right-hand turn bays on Parker Street into Derby Street; – $365,000 to construct a shared user path from High Street, Penrith to St Marys;

While you were sleeping, our Matildas became national heroes So often, we’ve seen how sport can bring our nation together; how it can define and inspire us in so many different ways.

While most of us were sleeping in the early hours of Monday morning, a new chapter in Australian sporting history was being carved.

And the name Kyah Simon was suddenly on everybody’s lips.

Born on June 25, 1991, her birthday celebrations this week included scoring the winning goal as the Matildas beat Brazil 1-0 and progressed to the quarter finals of the Women’s World Cup. To put it into perspective, it is the first time any Australian soccer side has won a knockout match at a FIFA World Cup. It was an upset of epic proportions and proved once again how Australia, no matter what the sport, thrives when the underdog tag is attached.

What Monday’s win did for women’s sport overall is enormous too.

To have the Matildas all over the papers, trending on Twitter and earning nationwide praise is tremendous for both football and women playing all professional sports who so often struggle to get decent exposure.

Australia take the field again in Canada this weekend and you can guarantee that a few more people will be watching this one, as interest continues to build.

Can Australia go all the way? If they do, it will go down as one of this country’s greatest ever sporting achievements when you consider the enormity of the challenge that has confronted the Matildas.

If they don’t, they’ve still done us exceptionally proud and done more for women’s sport than they probably realise.

ANZ Championship Grand Final, won by the Queensland Firebirds in remarkable fashion.

The NSW Swifts led for the entire game but were pipped at the post in a finish that was as gripping as any sport I’ve ever seen.

Netball really is the sleeping giant of Australian sport. A sellout crowd for the Grand Final only tells part of the story – attendances at netball overall are quite impressive and the sport is rarely left embarrassed by attendance figures.

The Grand Final had 94,000 viewers on Fox Sports on Sunday, well behind the NRL and AFL but still ranking as the sixth most watched pay TV show of the day.

It’s simple, really: Put your dog on a leash Like me, my little dog could afford to lose a couple of kilograms.

So, both of us have committed to doing a lot more walking in an effort to lead a somewhat healthier lifestyle.

I’ve always been bothered by people who walk their dogs without a lead, but in recent weeks I’ve noticed it more and more.

Seriously, what are these people trying to prove?

If you want to walk your dog off-leash, there’s plenty of dog parks around Penrith that allow you to do so.

But if you’re choosing to walk the streets with your dog, put a lead on it – it’s that simple.

Why would you risk injury to other dogs, other people or even your own dog if in a fleeting moment he or she runs in front of a car?

In recent weeks I’ve had numerous incidents while walking of other dogs coming up and causing problems. Usually the owner either does nothing or says “normally he doesn’t do that”.

If you’re someone who walks their dog around the streets without a leash, pull your head in – you’re an idiot.

And no, there is no excuse.

Budget promises big investment in roads and infrastructure in Mulgoa @daledrinkwater

oads and infrastructure were the key messages to come out of Tuesday’s State Budget for the Mulgoa electorate.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said the Budget outlined what she called an “unprecedented era of investment” for her electorate.

“This is a golden era where the Budget is repaired and we can build the future our communities deserve,” she said.

“This Budget delivers on our election commitments, including record recurrent budgets for health and education.”

NSW Premier Mike Baird reinforced the economic importance of western Sydney, and said that in 20 years’ time every second “Sydneysider” will live here.

“It is the engine room of our state and this Budget is further proof that the Liberals & Nationals Government backs western Sydney and its future,” he said.

The Mulgoa electorate will see investments such as: – $5 million for the planning of the upgrade of The Northern Road between Mersey Road and the M4 Motorway. It’s part of the $11 million project allocation in 2015/16 and is both State and Federally funded;

Police snapshot Penrith: Police appeal for information after fires

St Marys: Nobody injured in fire on Saddington Street

Police are appealing for witnesses after emergency services were called to two separate fires in the one night last weekend.

On Saturday, June 20, at about 4.00am several garbage bins were set alight on Haynes Street in Penrith.

A letterbox then caught alight from the bins with the blaze extinguished quickly.

Just after 5.00am the same morning, emergency services were called to a block of flats on Blaxland Avenue in Penrith where a garage was on fire.

Police set up a canvass around the area and conducted inspections.

They are now appealing for information on both the incidents.

Police are investigating a suspicious fire after emergency services were called to Saddington Street in St Marys.

At about 2.00am on Saturday, June 13, NSW Fire Brigade officers attended the residence and found a lounge out the front that was well alight.

The fire was extinguished quickly.

Neighbours who raised the alarm had assisted the occupants from the house with no one reported as injured.

Police attended and established a crime scene with a number of items seized for further investigation.

They are calling for any witnesses who may have any information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or talk to St Marys Police.

Oxley Park: Man demands property from bicycle rider

Colyton: Student brought stun device to school

A man was allegedly approached by another male while he was riding his bicycle, with the offender demanding property from him. At About 11.45pm on Sunday, June 14, the man was riding along Adelaide Street in Oxley Park when the offender, who was holding an object in his hand, allegedly attempted to get property from the man.

The man continued to ride his bicycle and managed to get away from the offender.

He returned to his home address where he contacted police.

The male offender is described as being skinny in the face, wearing dark tracksuit pants, and a dark hooded jacket.

A student allegedly took an electronic stun device to school but soon had it confiscated after arriving on the day. On Monday, June 22, Police from St Marys Local Area Command were called to the school on Carpenter Street in Colyton at about 1.00pm.

Investigations are underway including speaking to the 14-year-old boy to determine how he got hold of the device.

No one was injured with police appealing for information about this incident, including who supplied the device.

Detectives allege Mr Starling was approached by three people and was then shot outside of his business.

A number of exhibits were seized from Mr Weston’s Kingswood home, including steroids. It is believed he was sharing the home with his girlfriend.

Mr Taylor said the arrest was a significant breakthrough for police. “We will continue right throughout the coming days and weeks to target any persons involved in outlaw motorcycle gangs who are committing criminal acts and especially here in the western suburbs of Sydney,� he said.

Police believe Mr Weston held the position of President of the Rebels Windsor Chapter for several months after the murder of Mr Starling.

The operation follows the arrest of a 29-year-old man at a property in South Windsor on Thursday, April 23, who was charged with murder, sell firearm, and possess ammunition without authority.

Appeals are still being made by police for any information related to this incident, including information on the potential third person directly involved on the night of Mr Starling’s murder.

In other news, a member of the Rebels has been charged with drug, weapon and ammunition offences after an operation by the Gangs Squad’s Strike Force Raptor.

About 6am on Tuesday, officers executed a search warrant on a home at Wallacia.

A 34-year-old Rebels member was arrested at the home and taken to Penrith Police Station. He was charged with various offences.

he President of the Rebels Windsor Chapter was arrested and charged in Kingswood last Friday with the murder of a man on the Central Coast last year.

29-year-old Laurie Starling was shot outside the front of his business in Comsery Close in West Gosford at about 7.45pm on Thursday, July 24 2014.

Police and ambulance paramedics were called but Mr Starling died at the scene.

Three men were seen leaving the area in a small, silver-coloured vehicle.

Detectives from State Crime Command’s (SCC) Homicide Squad and Brisbane Water Local Area Command formed Strike Force Zeitz to investigate.

The 35-year-old President of the Rebels Windsor Chapter, John Weston, was arrested at a Kingswood address last Friday, June 19 at around 6.00am over the alleged murder of Mr Starling.

Detective Inspector Grant Taylor of SCC Homicide said the police believe Mr Starling was going about his normal duties on the night of his death. “It is believed Mr Starling was just a normal businessman going about his daily duties,� he said. “We do believe he was directly targeted

Labor claims Government has broken promises to locals

Penrith family is lucky to be alive after suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning when they used an open charcoal burner to keep warm on Monday night.

It’s understood that the father woke up in the middle of the night to find his two children and his wife unconscious after they all fell asleep around the burner.

Superintendent Tom Cooper from Fire and Rescue NSW said that using the charcoal burner was the wrong thing to do.

“There are other ways to keep warm and people need to know that bringing devices inside the home that are meant for outside is the incorrect thing to do,” he said.

Carbon monoxide is an odourless, colourless gas that forms when the carbon in fuels doesn’t completely burn.

It can cause harmful health effects as it reduces the amount of oxygen reaching the body’s organs and tissues.

Local Heath District Director for Public Health at Nepean Hospital, Doctor Bradley Forssman, said there are several effects on the body from being exposed to carbon monoxide.

“Exposure to carbon monoxide can cause flu-like symptoms, headaches and dizziness,” he said.

Just weeks before the election, the Baird Government announced a $4 million investment to plan the next stage of development at Nepean Hospital and a $12 million expansion of the St Marys Community Health Centre.

Kids show great initiative to help fund end of year camping trip

CTV images have been released this week in a bid to help police with their inquiries into a home invasion and an armed robbery at Erskine Park and at Werrington County last year.

Three men allegedly forced entry to a home on Fantail Crescent in Erskine Park at about 1.45am on Saturday, October 25 2014.

They threatened the occupants of the home and a 33-year-old male resident was then struck on the head with a brick, causing him to lose consciousness.

The trio managed to flee the residence with cash and property.

Days after this incident, on October 31, a man entered a newsagency on Dunheved Road at Werrington County, threatening a female employee with a firearm.

Just after 8.00am, he managed to steal cash and flee the area in a small silver car which was parked on Charles Todd Crescent, close to the newsagency.

Officers from St Marys Local Area Command formed Strike Force Bagpo to investigate the incidents that, they believe, are linked to each other.

The CCTV images are of a man who could assist with the investigation.

The students are holding the special event with the hope of raising funds for their end of year camp as well as other projects going on at the centre.

Held at Werrington County SUPA IGA, the store will be providing the students with hoses, car washing soap, rags and a marquee to kick-start their fundraiser.

Langham said the car wash initiative has been successful in the past.

“We’ve held them before, this will be our third one and we always do quite well,” she said.

“It will be great to once again build that team work among the young people at the centre and to have fun while doing the job too.”

At the cost of $10 a car, the students will be in different roles throughout the day, giving them the chance to demonstrate their teamwork skills.

The fundraiser will be held at Werrington County SUPA IGA on Dunheved Road in Werrington County on Wednesday, July 1.

e all want to optimise our tax return this financial year, but tax accountant Barclay Judge says there are a range of deductions many people miss.

Mr Judge, from Judge Accountants in Penrith, said the biggest thing that salary and wage earners miss are washing and laundry deductions.

“You don’t need to keep receipts for your laundry, a lot of people don’t think about it but there is an allowance which you can claim up to $150,” he said.

“However, it doesn’t apply to people who don’t have a uniform.”

Another huge expense a lot of people miss out on is costs of running a motor vehicle for work related uses, Mr Judge said.

“If you use your vehicle for work – not to and from work, but if you go to visit clients – then you can claim a tax deduction for that,” he said.

“You can claim up to 5000 kilometres without needing receipts. You don’t need a log book or anything like that unless you want to claim beyond that.”

Mr Judge added that the car expenses

could be used for other trips like travelling to the tax agent.

“Any costs incurred in doing your tax is tax deductible,” he said.

“If you go see a tax accountant and they issue you an invoice for doing your 2015 tax return, then that’s tax deductible next year too.”

Mr Judge said not to forget about the most common deductions for salary and wage earners such as mobile phone and Internet, where if used for work, a proportion can be claimed.

“If they use 10 per cent of their Internet for work then they can claim 10 per cent of the costs, and the same for mobile phones,” he said.

Mr Judge said donations are another thing that people often forget.

“Any donation over two dollars is tax deductible,” he said, “A lot of people forget but it’s becoming easier to claim now with receipts coming through in emails with online donations.”

Mr Judge recommended that from July 1, people set up a folder in their email for their receipts.

“Put all your receipts in there so by the end of that year you’ve got a copy of all the purchases and donations that you’ve made,” he said.

amilies can now spend their weekends in the Wianamatta Regional Park after its official opening earlier this month.

Upon opening the park to the public, Minister for the Environment Mark Speakman has announced it will include an extra 200 hectares.

Mr Speakman said the park will only open weekends but once further road works are completed in the coming months, it will open to the community seven days a week. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wianamatta Regional Park will be 900 hectares when completed, making it the largest Regional Park in Sydney with an area four times the size of Centennial park,â&#x20AC;? he said.

240 hectares of the park were handed over from Lend Lease to the National Parks and Wildlife Services in March this year.

State Londonderry MP Prue Car said she has been waiting a long time for the park, which sits in her electorate between Ropes Crossing and Jordan Springs, to open. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All the land owned by Lend Lease must be transferred over to the State Government â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as we have been waiting on since 2002,â&#x20AC;? she said.

Buy Australian made, retailers say Buying locally made furniture ensures a better quality product, and it’s not as expensive as you think DALE DRINKWATER

ocal residents are being encouraged to buy Australian-made furniture and shun overseas imports.

Nepean Office Furniture is recommending that locals buy home grown products in the wake of the Australian Furniture Association’s response to complaints over the quality and durability of imported products.

Manager of Nepean Office Furniture, Maria Quigley said aside from more choice, there are less risks and more benefits associated with buying Australian made and custom products.

“Because you’re using Laminex, Polytech, all the brands that you know, they all have longer warranties, and they all have longer scratch resistance,” she said.

“They have much better finishes, better colours, and they don’t fade or wear as quickly as an imported product.”

70 per cent of Nepean Office Furniture’s work is through Australian businesses who customise products for clients, and Mrs Quigley said it doesn’t cost much more than imported products.

“We draw it up, send it off to our manufacturers to quote it and the customer gets

exactly what they want. That’s the beauty of Australian made,” she said.

“And because we have such good rapport with our manufacturers the price isn’t hugely more.

“You can get an Australian made desk, made exactly to what they want and you’re only talking about $50 or $60 more.”

The remaining 30 per cent of products are imported from overseas, and Mrs Quigley said the complaints on them are higher, frustrating locals who feel they deserve better.

“The complaints you do get are after unpacking, and with scratches because [imported] quality control is not as good as Australia,” she said.

“It’s been shipped from a long way and there might be missing parts, so we get people saying it didn’t come with wheels or screws or nuts and bolts.”

Australian manufacturers are required to adhere to an Australian standard put in place by the government, that also covers concerns as far as environment and sustainability.

Next month, not-for-profit testing organisation Furntech-AFRDI will provide a presentation on the national standards at the FURNITEX-Connect event in Melbourne.

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT The community can discuss the possibility of owning its energy production at Council hosted Clean Energy Workshops on Friday, June 26. The two workshops will be open to everyone in the community to learn about clean energy opportunities and sustainability. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said Council has a strong commitment to sustainability and has made huge efforts to improve the energy and water efficiency of our buildings. “We have recently signed a deal to purchase 10 per cent green power for all of our major sites and facilities. This power will come from renewable energy sources,” he said. The workshops, organised by the State Office of Environment and Heritage, will be held at Tattersalls Function Centre in High Street, Penrith from 10am to 2pm and from 6.30pm to 9pm. As a part of the city’s bicentenary celebrations, Council is running a competition for the community to ‘think outside the square’ and suggest objects to place inside the capsule that will be buried at Thornton Oval. Animals are an important part of the community providing benefits such as companionship and social wellbeing.

Unfortunately poor management and inappropriate care of animals can impact on residential amenity in terms of noise, odour, property damage, health and safety.

Penrith Council has prepared a draft Keeping of Animals Local Orders Policy in response to enquiries and complaints about animals and the condition of premises, impacts on surrounding properties or general nuisance from animal behaviour.

“Less formal options are attempted first, but sometimes Officers will need to issue an Order to ensure owners meet their pet ownership responsibilities,” Mayor Ross Fowler said.

The draft policy will be on public exhibition until Tuesday, July 14.

Unfortunately not much information is passed to patients and their families in relation to SUDEP. My daughter Alexis was nearly 26 and mother to two beautiful boys when SUDEP stole her away. She had been epileptic for 3.5 years. I am not aware of her medications and we didn’t go down the autopsy path. My heart breaks each day for the loss of my daughter, and each time I read of another parent who must go on without their precious child.

Data from Alzheimer’s Australia shows one in 13 Australians living with dementia are under the age of 65. Some of these people are in their 30s and 40s.

Younger people diagnosed with dementia face a completely different set of professional and family related issues.

The Younger Onset Dementia Key Worker Program, which launched in 2013, is a unique initiative giving individualised support and information to people under the age of 65 who are living with dementia, their families and carers.

I would like to highlight to your readers the great success of this Federal Government funded program which has supported more than 700 people in NSW since its inception.

However, there is concern about the future of this highly successful and unique program beyond July next year, when it may be rolled into the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Our hope is that this vital program not only continues to provide much-needed support for younger people living with this life limiting illness, but also expands significantly to keep pace with the growing levels of demand.

We are grateful for your help in raising critical awareness of a program that we as an organisation are incredibly proud of.

enrith City Council has been questioning the St Marys community on what they think will make Queen Street a more vibrant place.

Colyton couple, 20-year-old Josh and 22-year-old Nicole [last names withheld] compared Queen Street to Mt Druitt and said although St Marys is safer, it needs more lighting and cameras to increase security.

When asked whether upgrading the aesthetics of the street would improve the overall feel, make more people come and deter groups from loitering, Nicole said she doesn’t think so.

“I don’t think it’s going to get better until the people of the St Marys community improve in themselves and in their attitude towards other people,” she said.

“I think fixing it up visually is just giving the kids another chance to destroy it.”

Nicole recommended to involve children more in the upgrade of the street, through the design process or contributing with art.

“If they feel they’ve accomplished something and they see someone destroy that they are going to feel that pain,” she said.

Josh recommended to get local high school students involved in the infrastructure so in the coming years they can have pride in their achievements.

by Penrith City Council to capture ideas of the community on how to upgrade the street and design ‘Special Places’.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said the ‘Special Places’ will make people want to spend more time on Queen Street by creating inviting, welcoming and fun places.

“We want to hear from the people who work and shop on Queen Street, as well as those who don’t regularly go there, about what will make their experience

ancer Council Penrith have teamed up with the Can Too Foundation to bring new and innovative fundraising events to the Penrith area in a bid to combat the 36,600 new cases of cancer expected each year in NSW. The new partnership will bring fitness activities to the area, all while raising money for the charities to help fund cancer research.

Community Programs Coordinator for Cancer Council Penrith, Rodney Titovs, said pairing up with Can Too will hopefully bring in more Penrith residents who are wanting to get fit.

“I think it’s fantastic as Cancer Council have always had a healthy lifestyle agenda and now, joining forces with Can Too really drives that home,” he said.

The organisations’ first shared events will be a 21km half marathon run and a 9km run, both held this September.

Employee of Penrith City Council, Donita Hulme, has been with Can Too for over three years and will be tackling the challenge of the half marathon.

“I always wished I could run and be active and since starting with Can Too, I have lost over 40kgs,” Ms Hulme said.

“I have been able to ease into getting fit and work at it in a friendly environment – I feel really good now.”

Training for the Sydney Blackmores 21km half marathon started this week in Penrith but it isn’t too late to register for the event.

All fitness levels are welcome to join with the distance run each week increasing at a steady pace before the main event.

Cancer Council NSW CEO, Jim L’Estrange is looking forward to working with Can Too on all their future events.

“The initiative will involve a number of new events and opportunities with a focus on achieving our parallel mission objectives to reduce the impact of cancer in the community, through prevention, support and funding vital research,” he said.

The 21km event is on September 20, finishing up at the Opera House.

Ms Hulme said it is worth taking up the challenge.

“Take the plunge and give it a try, especially with something like Can Too because it is a gradual process and you can slowly build it up all while having fun with the others who are in it for the same reason you are,” she said.

One-stop-shop for NSW Government services celebrates its first birthday in Penrith @daledrinkwater

enrith’s Service Centre has celebrated one year of shorter lines and streamlined services.

Though operating for just 12 months in Penrith, Service NSW has been operating for two years, with 34 centres running across the state, as a one-stop-shop for almost all State Government services.

State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres said the Service Centre has been a raging success over the past year and has revolutionised the way people interact with government.

“Providing a service that meets the needs of the customer rather than forcing the customer to meet the needs of government has been a profound change for the way we do business,” he said.

“It’s a good reflection of the type of government we are, one that’s focused on the people of NSW, and I think Service NSW is the epitome of that culture.”

Service NSW CEO Glenn King said the Service Centre is a one-stop-shop for hundreds of government transactions.

“Transactions like drivers license, registration renewal, birth certificates and seniors cards – 800 transactions across the

“Everything we have designed here has been designed with the customer in mind, and we get real time feedback with an overall 98 per cent highly satisfied customer satisfaction score,” Mr King said.

Mr King said after the customer feedback in the last year, one of the improvements that has been done is adding real time wait times to the Service NSW website.

“You can see how long you have to wait at Penrith if you came in at that time,” he said.

Penrith Service Centre’s Manager, Sangeeta Saxena, said 30 per cent of her customers use the digital services, and she and her staff continue to encourage people to do more things online.

“It saves time, it’s a win-win for everyone,” she said.

“Our average waiting time is between five to six minutes and that’s because we on the concierge are able to identify what transactions can be done online and take them to the self serve computers.”

charity lunch is set to be held at the Peachtree Hotel for Matthew Reid, who will be running from Melbourne to Sydney this coming September with the aim of raising over $500,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Tickets have just gone on sale for the August lunch, with special guest, pro boxer Jeff Fenech as the host.

“We’ve been mates for over 30 years and it’s great that Jeff is on board,” Mr Reid said.

“I just really want to be able to raise the money for the charity and do something special.”

Running between 40 and 50kms a day, Mr Reid will have a masseuse on board for two weeks of the trip.

A mate of his will also be tagging along to make sure the process runs smoothly.

“I’m going to be taking it easy as it isn’t a race, I’ll be stretching and working to what I can each day,” Mr Reid said.

opes Crossing local, Kim Cancellier, is busy showcasing her talent as a beauty queen, promoting her advocacy to end domestic violence and has high hopes of raising over $100,000 by the end of 2015 for charity.

Today (Friday, June 26), Ms Cancellier, who currently holds the title of Mrs Oceania, will be holding another Future Faces Pageant.

Her local pageant system has helped raise over $30,000 for her charity Queens Without Scars as well as White Ribbon Australia, for whom she is an ambassador.

Children from around the community will be competing in different categories on the night as they participate in ‘Catwalk To Conquer’.

“My child was really shy and to get her confidence boosted, I enrolled her in a pageant and it has completely changed her now,” Ms Cancellier said.

“People should come along before they pass judgement and just see the amazing differences you find in the children who compete.”

A doctor will also be speaking on ways to prevent getting ovarian cancer and the signs and symptoms to look out for.

The Future Faces Pageant will be held at the St Marys Band Club at 411 Great Western Highway on Friday, June 26 from 7.30pm.

How to make sure you’re delivering on your promises

ast week I received a call from a lovely gentleman who wanted to tell me how much he appreciated my article from last week, and how ‘spot on’ he thought it was.

He spent a few minutes sharing his story and encouraging me in my pursuits as well.

I shared this occurrence on my personal Facebook page, and one of my friends responded with “So lovely!

For someone to go out of their way to encourage another is a challenge for all of us to do it more!”.

She, and the gentleman who called me, are exactly right.

It is amazing what simple, seemingly ‘little things’ can do for your business.

I have had a few clients say to me recently “I tell everyone that you always reply quickly to emails”, because it impresses them that I do so as a matter of course.

Going out of our way to encourage, thank or assist people is something every business can do.

However, let me state clearly: if your only motivation for doing something ‘nice’ for clients and colleagues is

because of the benefits you expect to receive, think again!

While you can integrate these things into your processes (and while they may benefit your business), unless it comes from a genuine motivation they are not likely to respond positively.

That is, they will see through the charade!

An example of a gesture that I think is questionable is the ‘personalised’ birthday card from a large corporation, who you know has no personal contact with you, they simply have your birth date and name on file.

Do you hang those birthday cards alongside the ones from family and friends?

Probably not!

Whereas a handwritten card from someone you deal with directly on a regular basis is much more likely to be taken for what it is: a genuine gesture.

So any small business operators reading this, take advantage of your ‘smallness’ and do the little things that big business cannot do.

Turning back Time

House stands as Penrith’s finest Glenleigh House stands proudly as an icon from Penrith’s past, but as Dale Drinkwater discovered, not even time has changed the quality of the property...

T

hought of as one of the most beautiful buildings in Penrith, Glenleigh House is the region’s best kept secret.

At 133 years old, the Regentville home is noted as one of the most ‘imposing’ in the Penrith area, as it stands tall perched on top of a hill, overlooking the Penrith and Mulgoa valleys, and can be seen from all directions.

Looking out from in, the house takes advantage of sweeping views across the region, looking over manicured gardens and the mighty Nepean River to Emu Plains.

Glenleigh House was built in 1882 by philanthropist, businessman and shipping merchant James Ewan.

Mr Ewan built the generously sized home as he and his wife’s country residence, and soon after fell in love with life in the Penrith area.

The couple became very involved in the town, and donated much of their time and money to local causes such as the Nepean Cottage Hospital.

Glenleigh House stands out with its lightly coloured bricks, imported from England when Mr Ewan used them for weight in his ships, that are contrasted with red brick lintels that run horizontally around the outside of the house.

The house is still in very good shape, with its two timber verandas to the east and south, and a sizeable stone entry porch.

Mr Ewan chose to use cement in the build rather than mortar, which is said to have given the house an extreme resistance to the elements – it is suggested that architects have previously given it a life expectancy of 1000 years if maintained properly.

The interior of the home has been described as magnificent and still in very good condition, with its current owners looking after every fine detail.

Inside the mansion there is fine art riddled across its ceilings, after Mr Ewan paid for two Italian artists to come to Australia and create personal masterpieces.

Penrith City Local History described the inside as “most impressive” in detail: “Set

into the stencilled flowers and gold leaf are medallions to suit the room – musicians and opera singers in the music room, writers in the library and fish, hare and birds in the dining room”.

Mr Ewan wanted to develop a feeling of luxury inside his home, and used quality finishings such as stained glass windows and doors, a cedar staircase and marble fireplaces.

The marble, from Belgium, was thought to have been extremely hard to obtain, but paid off with a particularly eye catching black marble fireplace in the dining room.

It is said Mr Ewan spared no expense, which can be seen in the fine details of every room.

On the first floor, there are four large bedrooms, three smaller bedrooms and one bathroom.

The house is divided into two wings, with the western wing the lower of the two, being the servant’s quarters with the kitchen and laundry.

There are still bells inside the kitchen that were connected to each room so servants could see which room was ringing and needed attention.

Reports say that the servants were in fact treated well, and if they were to fall sick, Mrs Ewan would personally care for them in a small cottage built on the property.

Named “Hope Cottage”, Mrs Ewan would even care for servants from other properties in it if she felt they were not treated correctly.

“She was endeared to all by her alleviation of sickness and suffering and her kindness to all,” Penrith City Local History documented.

The Ewans worked closely with the Presbyterian church, to which Mrs Ewan left a large sum of money on her death to help pay for their repairs and renovations.

Mr Ewan passed away at Glenleigh House in 1903, and Mrs Ewan in 1914.

It is believed there is a large memorial to their family in Doonmore Street, Penrith.

Today, the building has been kept in pristine condition, with its current owners passionately preserving its originality, and maintaining its 200 rose bushes and selection of conifers.

The house stands as a remarkable part of Penrith’s history and will most likely outlive us all!

anthers fans, you can hit the panic button now.

In fact, you can smash it as hard as you can.

After last weekend’s 24-12 loss to the Bulldogs, it’s clear now that the Panthers are facing a severe uphill battle to reach the finals.

Injuries have of course crippled Penrith’s chances of building any momentum in this year’s competition but you have to wonder if the problems go beyond the obvious toll of hurt players.

For the last month, we’ve watched the Panthers be totally dominated by their opposition early in matches, forcing the side to play catch-up football.

In their last three games against the Eels, Storm and Bulldogs, the opposition has led by 12-0 by the 8th, 18th and 15th minutes respectively.

When you play catch-up football, there’s a good chance that your error rate and frustration levels will rise – particularly when you’ve got young players filling in for senior guys who are on the sideline.

Penrith’s confidence appears shot at the moment.

At ANZ Stadium last weekend, the Bulldogs sprinted back onto the field for the second half – keen to tackle the next 40 minutes of football. The Panthers on the other hand strolled out like they were going for a team walk at the beach. Something wasn’t right about it.

As it turned out the Bulldogs scored just five minutes into the second half and the rest is history.

So yes, hit the panic button, but be careful where you lay the blame as only those on the inside really know what the issue is at the moment.

Pointing the finger at individual players is risky business, particularly when many of them are doing their best in trying circumstances. Nobody plays to lose.

Penrith’s obvious problem at the moment is scoring points.

Defence isn’t really the issue – despite an at times awful completion and error rate, the Panthers haven’t been blown off the park during this period of poor form and that’s definitely a plus for coach Ivan Cleary, who almost certainly would have worked solely on boosting the side’s attacking credentials this week.

If the Panthers are to crawl out of the hole they’re currently in, it will most likely be on the back of Bryce Cartwright who has been sensational for the Panthers over the last month. Cleary had some trouble with Cartwright earlier in the season but a stint in the lower grades has had the desired result – he’s Penrith’s best at the moment.

The Panthers also add some power this weekend with the return of Josh Mansour.

I’m willing to say that the side that loses this game at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday will not make the finals – or at least will find it very difficult to do so.

If both sides can show the form they’ve threatened to produce at various times this season, a good game of football may just break out.

My fear for the Panthers is that even a good performance might not be enough – they’re in a slump at the moment that could take two to three weeks to come out the other side of.

Let’s just hope that when the wins finally do come, it’s not too late.

Armstrong passed away this week and Rob Weaver, who was once the club’s Media Manager, has shared this great story that shows how well thought of Mr Armstrong was at the club: “As a young man, Leo Armstrong flew as navigator in the famous Lancaster bomber, ‘G for George’ over Germany. The aircraft, now restored, is in the Australian War Museum in Canberra. I can’t remember now what year it was – but I think after Leo had stepped down as Chairman – that we went to Canberra to play the Raiders on a cold Saturday night. On the Saturday morning, we all climbed aboard our coach and headed for the War Museum.

Shane Richardson, Barry Walsh, Leo, John Lang, a couple of others and I went into the RAAF section to look for George.

Unbeknown to us, the famous kite had been taken away for renovation, but they did have a display where it normally stood – and one of the items was a black and white photo of a group of young men in front of George, ready to fly on a mission. Among them was an impossibly young but unmistakable Leo Armstrong.

Barry Walsh spotted Tony Puletua, Joe Galuvao and a couple of other players sauntering along nearby. He beckoned them over and asked Tony if he recognised anyone in the photo. Tributes flow for club leader The Penrith Panthers are mourning the loss of former chairman Leo Armstrong, who was at the helm of the club during an important time in its history...

ormer Penrith Panthers club chairman and life member Leo Armstrong has died, aged 92.

Mr Armstrong was first elected to the Panthers Board of Directors in 1980 and served as club chairman for 16 years, from 1984 to 1999.

In that time he oversaw the growth of the licensed club, which moved to its Mulgoa Road site in his first year as chairman, and the football club, which won its first premiership in 1991 under his chairmanship.

Mr Armstrong was honoured with a Panthers life membership in 1991 and continued to serve as a club director until 2003.

Current Panthers chairman Don Feltis paid tribute to the significant contribution Mr Armstrong made to the growth and success of the Panthers Group.

“Under Leo’s astute and respected leadership over many years, the Panthers Group was able to implement numerous innovative and productive initiatives,” he said.

Born in the small Queensland town of

Leo Armstrong

Gayndah in 1922, Mr Armstrong lived a very long and fruitful life.

He finished high school in Brisbane in the 1930s before taking up a job with the Commonwealth Bank.

The commencement of World War II saw Mr Armstrong enlist in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) where he trained as a navigator and joined the RAAF Bomber Command in February 1944. He completed 32 operations in a Lancaster bomber before seeing out the war working with Transport Command in India.

Upon his return to Australia, Mr Armstrong re-joined the Commonwealth Bank and became manager of the Penrith branch in 1969 – a position he held until his retirement in January 1984.

Speaking with Extra Time, Mr Armstrong’s son Tim said his father wasn’t just a great dad but also a great bloke.

“If he wasn’t my own dad and I met him, I’d say what a nice fella he was,” he said.

“The first year Penrith won the premiership he was chairman and he was absolutely chuffed by that.

“He loved his time at Panthers and was a very passionate fan.

“He never got upset, never got angry or frustrated, he had a heart of gold.”

His funeral was held on Thursday.

I remember being at the MCG back in 1994 when Origin was played there for the first time and what a difference 20 years makes.

Back then it was the strangest thing to see and hear a full stadium with virtually no passion or engagement from the fans.

They really didn’t understand what they were watching back then, but that’s certainly all changed now.

This crowd was right into it and it was hair on the back of your neck stuff.

I know the players all consider it a career highlight, the fans loved it and will spread the word. And as far as promoting the game beyond NSW and Queensland, it’s a definite winner.

Yes, I was one who was a little skeptical about taking a game to Victoria, but I’m a skeptic no more. It was win win win and I reckon it’ll become a must on every sport lovers’ bucket list to be at an Origin game at the ‘G’. Bring on Origin III!

A life changing experience Panthers on the Prowl is hoping local business leaders come on board with their latest Kokoda challenge...

oliticians and Panthers have had their first training session together ahead of an eight day Kokoda Trail trek in September.

Last Friday, Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies put a few hard hits on Penrith’s finest in Royce Simmons, Brad Waugh and Kevin Kingston to prove she’s got what it takes to mentor seven Year 11 girls along the gruelling 96km Papua New Guinea trail.

Ms Davies said she wants to lead by example and challenge herself mentally and physically.

“In life there will always be great obstacles and great challenges that will come to you and I think it’s really empowering to know what you can handle,” she said.

“I’ve always wanted to do the Kokoda Trail because my grandfather fought over there, but it’s also going to be really enriching for young women to find their inner potential and learn in a practical sense teamwork and supporting each other.”

After the success of the first Panthers on the Prowl Kokoda Trek in 2013, which saw a number of local Year 11 boys embark,

Tanya Davies and Royce Simmons at Pepper Stadium last week Ms Davies approached Prowl General Manager Brad Waugh about running the same thing for young women.

Current mentors for this year’s trek are Ms Davies, Federal Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott and former Olympian and Federal Senator Nova Peris.

Ms Davies said they are still seeking more support for the young women.

“We are approaching business women to participate as a mentor during the project,

but also provide funds to pay for one of the students that has been selected,” she said.

Mr Waugh said corporate sponsorship will cover the mentor and one of the young girls’ trips, with a small amount going to the Prowl’s other community projects.

“It is a fundraiser but I can guarantee it will be one of those once in a lifetime experiences for everyone,” he said.

I IT’S NOW API’S TURN TO SHINE

n the rugby league community, many of us grew up with a passionate attachment to our local grounds.

Pepper Stadium, Henson Park, North Sydney Oval and Leichhardt Oval are just a few examples of suburban grounds which Sydneysiders would frequent on the weekend.

Pulling on the team colours, enjoying a pie and sauce, getting a great view from the vantage point of dad’s shoulders and watching your heroes play was, and still should be, a regular outing for rugby league loving families.

The Panthers travel to Leichhardt Oval on Sunday in what is a must-win clash for the boys. They will face a hostile Tigers crowd and will need as much support from Panthers fans as possible.

I’m excited to see what Apisai Koroisau can bring to the team after being named to start the game for the injured James Segeyaro. He stepped up when the Rabbitohs needed him last season and walked away with a premiership ring. I’m confident he can deliver for the Panthers in their time of need.

Another week at fullback will have done wonders for Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and his combination with Peter Wallace and Jamie Soward will continue to improve.

And, of course, we welcome back fan favourite Josh Mansour on the wing.

Make sure you get down to Leichhardt Oval early and watch the high-flying Panthers NYC team, who will be shooting for their 10th win in a row against the seventh-placed Tigers.

PANTHERS LOOK FOR 10 WINS IN A ROW AFTER NARROW ESCAPE OVER CANTERBURY AT ANZ Penrith’s incredible winning streak almost came to an end last Saturday evening, at the hands of a fast-finishing Canterbury Bulldogs side.

The Panthers were well in control with a 30-10 lead before the Bulldogs made things very interesting, scoring four tries in the final 10 minutes to go down narrowly 30-26.

Penrith got on the board first through Corey Waddell after playmaker Dylan Edwards put up a deft cross-field kick to the wing of Fuimanu Enese, who caught the ball and passed it to Waddell to dive over from close range.

Canterbury hit back soon after with two quick tries which put them in front 10-6 before Panthers hooker Soni Luke steamed out of dummy half untouched to put Penrith back in front 12-10.

With Penrith in charge once again, it was time for them to score a few more points before the end of the half, with Edwards putting up another brilliant bomb, which was this time caught by captain Brent Naden, who soared above the rest of the pack to grab the Steeden and touch it down between the posts.

Penrith went into the break 18-10 leaders.

Cowan Epere got Penrith’s tally tick-

ing over not long after the players hit the field for the second half, with the big forward powering his way straight through some paper-thin Dogs defence to go over and score his first of the year.

With Penrith up 24-10, Naden was fortunate enough to get his second try of the evening following an incisive break

by Luke with 12 to go which saw him feed his captain on the inside to cruise over and score.

The most interesting aspect of the night happened in the final 10 minutes when the Panthers, up by 20, put the cue in the rack and fell asleep.

With both sides down a man due to a late heated scuffle, Penrith quickly fell apart with Canterbury scoring four quick tries to narrow the score.

However the Bulldogs were their own worst enemy, missing four straight conversions which, if made, would’ve saw Penrith lose their first game in nine weeks.

This Sunday afternoon the first-placed Panthers will look for 10 in-a-row when they visit historic Leichhardt Oval to take on the seventh-placed West Tigers in Round 16 of the Holden Cup competition.

Kick-off is at 1.45pm.

REFRESHED PANTHERS LOOK TO CONTINUE WINNING WAYS AFTER BYE WEEKEND The Panthers, having had the second of three scheduled competition byes, resume their defence of the NSW Cup when they travel to Central Coast Stadium this Sunday to take on Sydney Roosters’ feeder club, Wyong Roos in a battle of 1 v 5.

The timing of this game (4.30pm) is odd to say the least as it has been scheduled to kick-off 30 minutes after the conclusion of the NRL game between Sydney Roosters and Gold Coast. Most NSW Cup games if played at a NRL game-day venue will preclude the main game.

The Panthers went into the bye having avenged their early season loss to Newcastle winning the Grand Final replay, 30-24 at Pepper Stadium while Wyong Roos come into this clash having returned to their winning ways in defeating Manly away from home 38-26.

This clash has proven to be fiery in recent years. In 2014 honours were shared between the sides with the home team winning on both occasions; Wyong defeated Penrith 30-26 before the Panthers returned the favour defeating the Roos 32-24, a match highlighted by the controversial suspension handed out to Dallin Watene-Zelezniak after then Roos skipper, Jay Florimo made an on-field

allegation he had been eye-gouged in the last minute of play.

This game also represents a battle between the competition’s two best defensive teams; Penrith’s climb to the top of the table has been built all around their defence, conceding just 15 points per game with Wyong having conceded just 19 points per game.

In team news, Wyong have named a very strong team, including the likes of Samisoni Langi, Lagi Setu, Mitch Williams, Matt McIllwrick as well as recent recruits Omar Slaimankhel and Lopini Paea and their aggressive style of play especially in the forwards will be a good test for the Panthers.

Conversely injuries and suspension have forced Penrith to make several changes for this clash.

Robert Jennings returns from injury to take his place in the centres but the suspension of hooker Sione Katoa and yet another injury to Adam Docker sees a reshuffle to the starting pack. Matt Eisenhuth comes onto the bench with Andy Saunders promoted to start at prop, Leilani Latu moving back to lock, Chris Smith comes into the back-row and Brendan Attwood moves to hooker. Atonio Pelasasa also comes onto the bench.

W

hen it comes to the Aussie live music scene there’s not many bands that rock harder than The Angels, and to prove it the band are currently in the middle of their ‘A-Z Tour’ which features 26 tracks from their back catalogue, one for every letter of the alphabet.

“It’s been fantastic, we’ve been putting on some monster shows,” frontman Dave Gleeson said of their two and a half hour gigs.

Though artists like Bruce Springsteen are well known for shows that run for several hours, it’s still pretty rare to have a band on stage for much more than an hour these days.

“A lot of headline acts do their one hour and 10 minutes or one hour and 15 minutes and then do a couple of encores, and then they’re backstage sipping Moet and Chandon,” Dave laughed.

“We want to just make sure that we rock a crowd and that they get value for money. You want to make sure people are walking away just absolutely satisfied with what they’re getting.”

If the success of the tour so far is anything to go by it seems that audiences are well and truly satisfied with The Angels. After the overwhelmingly positive response earlier this year, which included a full month of tour dates throughout May, the band have decided to continue touring, adding additional dates to make it a year long affair.

The tour extension is fine by Dave. After

more than two decades in the industry, including front man duties for two of Australia’s biggest bands, The Angels and The Screaming Jets, he still gets a buzz out of touring.

“A lot of fun stuff goes on and a lot of the clichés happen and stuff. Stupid jokes get told in Taragos, mostly by me,” he laughed.

“It’s like a boys own adventure.”

The ‘A-Z Tour’ features some of the band’s biggest hits, crowd favourites and a few classic rarities thrown in for good measure. Tracks on the set list include ‘No Exit’, ‘Take A Long Line’, ‘After the Rain’, ‘Shadowboxer’ and ‘Face the Day’.

There’s also a chance for audiences to request a song during the ‘Q’ (question time) section of the show. “‘Mr Damage’ gets called out a lot,” Dave says when asked what’s the most popular request.

Not surprisingly, there’s also been some non-Angels song requests.

“Someone yelled out for [The Screaming Jets track] ‘Better’ the other night,” he laughed.

“And I said ‘no, we’re not cross pollinating’.”

Local audiences will get a chance to see Dave and the guys on stage when they head to the Evan Theatre on Friday, August 7 as part of the tour. Along with the 26 tracks the band will launch the show with a performance of their reworked version of the classic rock hit ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again’, which will also be available for purchase only at the show.

“We actually went back to the original version because John and Rick wanted to emulate the 1970s ‘before’ version which didn’t get much radio play,” he said.

When asked why he thinks audiences

have such affection for the track, Dave sums it up perfectly with just a few words.

“Well I think it’s the chant,” he laughed.

The famous audience response ‘no way, get f***ed, f**k off’ was first heard by the band during a gig in Mount Isa in the 70s.

“They [the band] all looked at each other like ‘what? what’s going on?’,” Dave said.

“It took them totally by surprise but obviously it takes on a life of its own now.”

Dave loves the audience participation and it’s this engagement with the crowd that he strives for every time he gets out on stage.

“I make it my absolute number one chore to connect to the crowd. I’m not there to show ‘em me chops or sing like Mariah Carey, I just want to get out there

and rock ‘em,” he laughed.

2015 is going to be a big one for Dave.

Along with the ‘A-Z Tour’ he also has plans to record another solo album and is currently working on a new album with The Screaming Jets, which will be released in time for the band’s tour in September.

It seems for this talented Aussie rocker one band just isn’t enough.

“My bass player calls it having an affair,” he laughed.

The Angels will be performing at the Evan Theatre on Friday, August 7 at 8pm.

rom July 13-18 is Winter Fire Safety Week, and to help promote this important cause NSW Fire & Rescue, in partnership with RSL and Service Clubs are running an initiative Keep Looking While Cooking to promote and educate the community on Fire Safety and what to do in an emergency, specifically in a kitchen fire in the home.

The purpose of Fire & Rescue NSW’s (FRNSW) winter home fire safety campaign is to address the seasonal spike in home fires over winter, with an aim of reducing incidents and injuries, by increasing concern and awareness in targeted audiences. An analysis of FRNSW incident data indicates the number of accidental home fires trends higher in the months of May to August. Kitchen (cooking) fires have consistently comprised approximately half of all accidental residential structure fires with the majority of the accidental fires being “unattended”.

On Tuesday 7th July, NSW Fire & Rescue will be holding a simulation of a kitchen fire in the Penrith RSL Club car park. This is intended to demonstrate what should be done in this situation and how to be safe. This will take place at 10.00am and is free to attend.

On Tuesday 14th July, a local fireman will attend Penrith RSL Club to give a talk on fire safety and to raise awareness on the dangers in the home that are often overlooked. This will take place between 12pm – 12.30pm and is free to attend.

he wonderful world of Wonka will be brought to the stage this July when Ruby Productions presents their version of the Roald Dahl classic ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.

This beloved story combines the comedic with the fantastical as Charlie Bucket (Josiah Van Stolk) and his Grandpa Joe (Jeffrey Brocktoff) get a sneak peek into the mysterious factory of the eccentric Willy Wonka (David Phillips).

Though it appears to just be a fun tour, the children aren’t aware that Wonka is testing them to see who’s worthy of becoming the factory’s next owner.

The cast features a range of talented local performers from age six to an

actress in her 70s, proving just how incredibly diverse the local theatre scene can be.

The show was written by Richard R. George and is directed by Ashleigh Powell, who is making her directorial debut.

lassical flute and guitar duo Anne and Alan Plummer will be performing at the Springwood Music Club’s next concert on Sunday, June 28.

The concert will feature several works for flute and guitar including ‘The Black Decameron’ by Leo Brouwer and ‘Dos Aires Candomberos’ and ‘Three Piezas Marginales’ by Maximo Diego Pujol.

Both Anne and Alan have an impressive list of achievements in the world of classical music.

With just two years playing experience Anne gained entry to the Conservatorium High School. Since graduating she has performed over 100 concerts a year for

eight years in Musica Viva’s Educational Performance Project.

Alan Plummer was the first guitar player to gain entry to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and is an experienced music teacher who has taught at various schools including Newtown High School of the Performing Arts.

MUSIC Breathe In. Breathe Out. Hilary Duff // KATE REID

It’s been a long time between drinks for Hilary Duff.

Her last album ‘Dignity’ was released in 2007 and since then the pop star and actress has been taking a break from music and focusing on family life.

But now, to the delight of fans worldwide, Hilary’s back with her new album ‘Breathe In. Breathe Out.’.

The album is a pretty standard pop affair. Themes of love and lust run throughout the tracks which include the new single ‘Sparks’. There’s plenty of fun dance anthems on the album including songs like ‘Confetti’ which appears to take influence from pop goddess Katy Perry.

Though it’s been eight years unfortunately Hilary’s sound doesn’t seem to have matured much. This is still more of an album that will appeal to love obsessed teens than an older pop loving audience.

This is a fun album that will no doubt spawn a couple of pop gems but it’s far from a classic.

Milan Kundera // KATE REID The Festival of Insignificance is a beautiful little novel which reads more like a short story, with only a handful of characters and a few scene changes.

It follows four middle-aged Parisian men who spend their time philosophising about life and reflecting on the ways they have been made to feel inconsequential.

Though it sounds a little self indulgent the reality is this is a rather charming story. The ultimate conclusion derived from the book is that the majority of life is insignificant, which, rather than being depressing, is actually quite liberating.

It’s a great read.

‘Jupiter Ascending’ is the story of Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), a young woman who discovers her true destiny as an heiress of an intergalactic nobility after she is visited on earth by the genetically engineered hunter Caine (Channing Tatum).

Unfortunately her newly discovered position of power puts Jupiter in the firing line of bad guys, Titus (Douglas

Booth) and Balem (Eddie Redmayne).

While ‘Jupiter Ascending’ features beautiful visuals, and all the CGI effects you’d expect from a movie that cost more than $170 million to make, the story is a huge let down. You know a script needs work when you find yourself laughing and cringing at lines that are supposed to be serious.

The star studded cast, which includes

Kunis, Tatum, Redmayne and Sean Bean as Stinger, do the best with what they’ve been given but unfortunately for them it’s very little. At the end of the day there’s plenty of brilliant sci-fi films on the market that offer stunning visuals AND an interesting story. ‘Jupiter Ascending’ is not one of them.

Having a ball at local fundraiser On Friday, June 12 guests gathered at Panthers Pavilion for the Music for Life ball to raise funds for the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation founded by Associate Professor Charlie Teo. Guests were dressed to impress with a black and white theme and danced the night away with entertainment from The Diamonds and The Players.

There was also a photo booth to capture memories of the night, a beautiful opening dance routine from Jay and Emma and performances by Nicki Dee Gillis and James Hill.

MC for the night was journalist and television news presenter Amber Sherlock from Channel Nine.

The event was a huge success, with guests having a ball for a very worthy cause. The event will be back next year, most likely in September.

Watching TV, working at a computer or playing electronic games have long been associated with physical health problems such as obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis.

Sedentary behaviour has also been associated with depressive symptoms.

Now, research by Melbourne’s Deakin University has linked sitting time to anxiety, a mental health illness estimated to affect more than 27 million people globally.

having physical symptoms such as pounding heartbeats, difficulty in breathing, tense muscles and headaches.

The research, published in the journal BMC Public Health, analysed the results of nine studies that looked at sedentary behaviour and anxiety.

Sedentary behaviour was classified in varying ways – from watching TV and using

a computer, to total sitting time, including on public transport, watching TV and in the workplace.

Five studies found that an increase in sedentary behaviour was associated with an increased risk of anxiety, while four found total sitting time was associated with the risk.

The university researchers suggest the link could be because of disturbances in sleep patterns, withdrawing from social relationships or poor metabolic health.

Another way people withdraw from social relationships includes using technology in place of situations that bring you into contact with real people.

Typing ‘LOL’ in a text or pressing like on a comment do not give you anywhere near the physiological responses, the mood lifts, the chemical release that you get from interacting with people face to face and having a real laugh.

Instead of sitting staring at your iPhone screen next time your’re at lunch, get up walk around, talk to someone interact with real life.

The health benefits are like doing a workout and will do wonders for your life inside and out.

Arthritis tends to be more obvious during colder weather. The most obvious signs include limping and stiffness and you may find that this is worse as soon as your pet wakes up and improves as they warm up. Today, millions of people all around the world have heard Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me!”

They have done it and like Matthew they have been able to rejoice at the new life Jesus offers.

And here is the challenge, today, now, Jesus is calling you to follow him!

A few years ago I worked as a health coach. In that role I spoke to hundreds of people who were looking to make healthy lifestyle changes.

What I noticed was that the people who lost the most weight and maintained it were the ones who weren’t actually focused on weight loss. Instead their aim was to change their health behaviours and attitudes. The subsequent weight loss was a by product of their choices, rather than their sole focus.

I admit this example isn’t rigorous scientific research,

When we obsess about that number on the scale it becomes the be all and end all. If we feel we’ve been doing everything right, yet the number doesn’t change, we can become disheartened.

Now don’t get me wrong, weight loss is a worthwhile pursuit, after all there are proven health benefits to losing even just 10 per cent

of your body weight, but we need to start looking at the bigger picture. We need to shift our focus to our actions rather than focusing solely on the outcome.

Eating healthier foods, reducing portions and exercising regularly will put you in the best position to reduce your risk of chronic illness and increase your general wellbeing.

So to take the focus off the weight here’s a few tips.

Start by looking at the benefits you’re getting from making healthy lifestyle choices that aren’t weight related.

Maybe you’re sleeping better at the moment, have more energy to play with the kids or have seen a reduction in your blood pressure.

Another idea is to set yourself challenges. For example, you might aim to train for and complete a fun run or to increase your fruit and vegetable intake (yes I know I harp on about fruit and vegetables but they really are the cornerstone of a healthy diet).

When it comes down to it the number on a scale is not the sole indicator of health.

To really have a positive long term impact on your health stop obsessing about weight loss and instead focus on reducing your portions, eating a variety of nutritious foods and exercising regularly.

Heavy exercise such as sprinting and jumping up is counter productive. It is important that arthritic animals are exercised on a lead or harness and not allowed to go off lead so they do not over exert themselves.

Swimming is an excellent exercise as it improves muscle mass without placing excessive pressure on the joints.

recent study has shown that western Sydney has a higher incidence of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases compared with the rest of the state. As individuals it is important to understand the impacts of these diseases and how to reduce them.

Diabetes is a long term condition characterised by high blood glucose (sugar).

Our bodies need to use glucose from our diet to make energy.

Converting glucose to energy relies on a hormone called insulin.

There are two main types of diabetes, I will focus on type 2 in this column.

Type 2 diabetes is caused by either: 1. a lack of insulin, or 2. the body not responding properly to the insulin.

Risk factors include being overweight or obese, age, smoking, unhealthy diet, high blood pressure and mid-section fat.

If untreated high blood glucose can lead to: • Kidney damage • Eye damage • Nerve damage to the feet and other body parts • Heart disease and circulation problems • Sexual difficulties • Infections In most cases people with type 2 diabetes don’t have symptoms.

Pharmacies and medical centres offer checks to monitor blood glucose levels.

These glucose levels are the main method of diagnosing diabetes, which is why they are so important to do regularly.

Some people’s idea of hypnosis is based on what they have seen in movies and that it is some sort of mind control when nothing could be further from the truth.

Hypnosis cannot be used to make you do anything that goes against your own will, values and ethics. You choose which suggestions you accept and which you reject.

Why do I need hypnosis?

It has been calculated that the conscious mind works at around 2000 bits per second and the subconscious at over 400 billion bits per second. So when you consciously decide to stop smoking, lose weight, beat anxiety or a phobia but the subconscious is programmed for something else, which do you think will win? Hypnosis helps you make changes at the subconscious.

How effective is it?

One scientific study found that after one hypnosis session smokers were 10 times more successful at beating the habit than those who went cold turkey and five times more successful than those using nicotine replacement therapy.

t’s true, plaque build-up on your dentures can lead to gum irritation. Just as plaque collects on natural teeth, it builds up on dentures too. It’s different with dentures however as plaque hardens into calculus, harbours bacteria and irritates the gums.

Maintaining good oral health is important, as doing it the wrong way can lead to expensive damage.

Here are a few simple steps you can take to ensure you’re doing it correctly.

Cleaning dentures Always use denture paste and a specialised denture brush with soft bristles that can reach every part of your denture. Never use a regular toothbrush

or toothpaste. They are too abrasive and will dull the teeth and damage the lining, resulting in an ill-fitting denture.

Toothpaste leaves microscopic scratches that make your denture prone to staining and harder to clean.

Be sure to rinse your dentures and mouth after every meal. Take care to clean between the denture and your gums. We recommend gently brushing your gums, tongue and roof of your mouth to stimulate circulation to your gum tissues and to remove bacteria.

Always wash your denture over a sink filled with water or lined with a towel to prevent damage or breakage should it fall.

Overnight care

Each night, dentures should be placed in a container and covered with water or polident denture cleaning tablets. Bleach should never be used to clean or soak your dentures.

Denture polishing Just as with natural teeth, dentures need to be professionally checked too. A visit to your dental prosthetist will make your denture look and feel like new again.

It isn’t expensive and is recommended once or twice a year. Specialised buffing tools and waxes will restore the glossy finish to your denture teeth and base.

Tough stains can also be removed. Your prosthetist will check for changes to its fit and appearance so it will look its best.

Geyer, who played 135 games for the Panthers as well as three State of Origins,

coached the St Clair Comets Junior Rugby League Club at Peppertree Reserve in Erskine Park as part of the Hino Australia Triple M Little Legends competition.

The unique competition – which involves footy legends, junior football clubs and the Triple M radio network – was set up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the truck and bus company.

Tuesday’s coaching session was one of

many already held around the country that involves football legends passing on their skills and knowledge to the next generation of players.

The St Clair Comets won the training session after registering their club with Triple M and explaining why they deserved the chance to train with the rugby league legend.

In addition to their training session with

Geyer, the Comets also received $10,000 in prize money to help them continue training future generations of footballers.

47-year-old Geyer is a popular member of the Triple M Network, thanks to his work on the Grill Team breakfast program in Sydney.

The St Clair Comets is the junior rugby league club of current Panthers star Matt Moylan.

fter the recent axing of long time goalkeeper Ante Covic, the Western Sydney Wanderers finally have someone to man the nets next season with Melbourne City’s Andrew Redmayne joining the club until the end of the 2016/17 season.

With over 50 A-League appearances to his name, the 26-year-old will add further experience to the Wanderers’ growing squad.

A product of the Australian Institute of Sport, Redmayne joined the Central Coast Mariners as a teenager before taking up an offer from the Brisbane Roar, winning three trophies with the Queenslanders before joining Melbourne City (formerly Heart) where he quickly established himself as the club’s number one keeper, a position he kept for the majority of his time at the club.

The Wanderers are looking forward to what Redmayne will offer.

“Andrew has a fantastic work ethic and will be a great addition to our squad,” Wanderers CEO, John Tsatsimas said.

“He has played at the top level and been in some very successful groups through-

The new recruit revealed his main aim was to bring a championship to the Wanderers and said he couldn’t wait to play in front of his family, who are interestingly Penrith locals.

“I’d love to win a championship with the Wanderers, I was fortunate enough to win a couple during my time in Brisbane and there is no better feeling and I want that again for this club and for western Sydney,” Redmayne said.

“It is a massive plus that I’ve got so much family with my mum, uncles, aunties and cousins all in the western Sydney region near Emu Plains. As soon as I told mum she was ecstatic that she’d get to see a bit more of me.”

t’s not often Jessica Fox leaves an event these days with medals other than gold around her neck but that’s exactly what happened at the first ICF World Cup event in Prague, Czech Republic last weekend.

The 21-year-old Leonay resident took home a silver medal in both the women’s C1 and K1 final – proving she’s not so invincible heading into next year’s Rio Olympics.

In the C1 final, Fox was upstaged by home crowd favourite Katerina Hoskova who clinched the gold in 112.43, 0.92 seconds ahead of Fox. “It was a good start and hopefully I can build on that this season,” Fox said.

“It was a pretty good run but I did have a mistake at gate eight, but the rest I attacked it and I had some good ups.”

Meanwhile, in the K1 final, Fox’s margin of defeat was far closer with German Jasmin Schornberg edging the Penrith paddler by 0.13 seconds, winning in 98.16.

“I was really happy with another silver medal today,” Fox said.

“The women’s race was really competitive and really close and I think the level stepped up in the final as well.”

he Penrith District Netball Association (PDNA) will be heavily represented at one of the largest sporting events in the southern hemisphere this weekend.

The local association will have four teams competing at the 2015 Netball NSW State Age Championships, which gets underway this Saturday, June 27 and runs until Monday, June 30 at various netball venues across Sydney.

Along with hosting Division 3, the PDNA will field sides in each age-group in the Championship division at this year’s tournament, which will see 294 teams representing 83 associations from around the state.

Four venues will host three days of back-to-back netball action for the 47th installment of the competition including Baulkham Hills Shire Netball Association (Championship division), Eastwood Ryde Netball Association (Division 2), Penrith District Netball Association (Division 3) and Hawkesbury City (Division 4).

Locals are welcome at Jamison Park this weekend to watch some of the state’s best young talent go around.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers women’s Waratah Championship League side have been demolished 102-73 at the hands of the Norths Bears last weekend.

Alicia Poto was once again Penrith’s best performer with 29 points and 10 rebounds.

Penrith’s women have slipped to fifth and will battle the eighth-placed Manly Warringah Sea Eagles this weekend on the Northern Beaches.

ICE HOCKEY: The Penrith Phantoms have been hammered 8-3 by the Newcastle Northstars in the latest round of the Division 1 NSW Ice Hockey competition.

The last-placed Phantoms will battle this first-placed Canterbury Bucs this Saturday evening at the Penrith Ice Palace.

AFL: The Penrith Rams have now won two straight after they thrashed the Moorebank Magpies 83-56 in

the latest round of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition.

A number of players kicked doubles for the Rams including Ben McGovern, Daniel McDonald, Ben Mayer, Phillip Aumann and Blake Roberts.

The fifth-placed Rams will battle the last-placed North Shore Bombers this Saturday at Gore Hill Oval.

AFL: The Penrith Ramettes women’s team have now won two straight, embarrassing the Moorebank Magpies 83-14.

The Ramettes will enjoy a bye this weekend before taking on the Gosford Wildcats next Saturday.

CRICKET: Cricket NSW will be running a Milo in2CRICKET program at Penrith Indoor Sports Centre during July and August.

Milo in2CRICKET, which is for kids aged between four and eightyears-old, will be running on Friday afternoons and will help develop cricket skills through fun games and activities.

or fans visiting Nepean Rugby Park last Saturday afternoon they’d be forgiven for thinking they were extras in a horror movie, set at an abattoir, after the Penrith Emus were butchered beyond belief by Northern Suburbs.

The 90-14 thrashing was one of Penrith’s biggest defeats to date and certainly the highest amount of points scored against them all season.

Speaking with the Weekender, a dejected Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu admitted it was hard to watch the scoreboard ticking over and over throughout the afternoon.

“The players didn’t follow the game plan… they didn’t take ownership,” he said.

“At the end of the day where’s the pride and where’s the respect from these players? It’s not a lack of training, it’s a lack of implementing that on the pitch. That’s what I think is the biggest problem – it’s the mindset of some of these players.”

With his side still winless after 13 rounds, Tu’ipulotu said he often feels like he’s wasting his time and patience with some of his young brigade.
