Baird backs a winner at Londonderry • Local club’s enormous relief • Premier reverses greyhound ban • Animal rights groups outraged JADE ALIPRANDI

SW Premier Mike Baird sensationally backed down on his ban on greyhound racing this week, announcing on Tuesday that the industry has one last chance to get it right.

Mr Baird announced in July this year that as of July 1, 2017, greyhound racing in NSW would no longer continue, leaving businesses, trainers, and clubs with no other option but to shut down.

Under immense political pressure to reverse the banning of the industry, there were indications Mr Baird would lose the 2019 State Election on the back of the controversial decision.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Mr Baird admitted he “got it wrong”.

“It’s clear… on reflection… that we did not give the good people of the industry a chance to respond, a chance to reform,” Mr Baird said.

“Today I can announce that the greyhound industry will be given one last chance. It will be given an opportunity to reform.”

General Manager at Richmond Race Club in Londonderry, Brad Adam, said it’s a major feeling of relief for the club.

“We are just over the moon and ecstatic about the decision – we’re definitely relieved,” he told the Weekender.

“We’re very thankful to the Government for listening to the public; a dark cloud has been lifted from our club just as we were making plans to shut the gates.”

Londonderry greyhound trainer Alan Proctor said he and his wife can finally go back to their normal lives.

“To have the decision reversed is just the best feeling for us after a stressful three months,” he said.

“We’ve been doing this for 47 years – it’s our passion, our lifestyle, everything we do all day long so it’s a major win for us and the industry.”

Former NSW Premier Morris Iemma will chair a Greyhound Industry Reform Panel that will determine the new regime.

Under the new regime, trainers and businesses will incur mandatory life bans as well as increased jail terms for live baiting, and they will need to register all greyhounds for their entire lives.

RSPCA, industry and government representatives have been invited to join the five person panel.

Not everyone is happy about the decision with the reversal of the ban angering animal rights groups.

’ve been to plenty of great sporting events at ANZ Stadium, from NRL Grand Finals to State of Origins, football internationals and of course plenty of NRL club matches.

But nothing has matched the atmosphere that Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC fans provided last Saturday night.

The Sydney Derby – played in front of a record A-League crowd of 61,880 – highlighted what was a stellar opening weekend for the competition.

It also showcased just how far football has come in Sydney in such a short period of time.

David Gallop and the FFA may have dreamed about scenarios like last Saturday night when they hastily launched the Wanderers just in time for the 2012/13 season, but I doubt they thought it would happen so quickly.

And while all sports have their particular spectacles that will attract big crowds, both the AFL and NRL would be exceptionally jealous of what the A-League can now provide via the Sydney Derby at club level.

Both codes would argue that the bigger picture tells a different story but the A-League certainly delivered a body blow last weekend.

The NRL has nine Sydney clubs and will never be able to match the crowd and intensity of the rivalry at club level.

The AFL could come close given they have just two clubs in Sydney, but the growth of the GWS Giants has been much slower than the Wanderers.

In fact, when the Swans and Giants met in a Finals match at ANZ Stadium last month, a crowd of 60,222 turned up. That

The atmosphere at the Olympic precinct was simply sensational.

The Red and Black Bloc (RBB) was in fine voice, and The Cove (Sydney’s FC’s active supporter group) gave as good as they got. Most of the time it was friendly fire and a wonderful thing to watch.

The singing, the chanting, the finger pointing – it’s all great fun.

Even when the Wanderers fell behind in the second half, the RBB kept singing.

They never lost their voice.

There was one negative – a couple of flares were again let off in the RBB and for the life of me, I can’t figure out why.

Wanderers fans are so passionate and active that they don’t need the flares to deliver a wonderful atmosphere.

After all the warnings, you’d have to be a real knucklehead to let off a flare and potentially cost your side three points.

Marriage equality in the never-never Labor’s decision to essentially put a bullet in the same-sex marriage plebiscite threatens to throw marriage equality into the never-never.

Bill Shorten’s move was the right one – the Parliament should do what it’s there to do and that’s legislate in the public interest.

It is becoming nothing short of embarrassing that it’s taking Australia so long to do the right thing and allow samesex marriage to be legalised.

Baird didn’t want to be an underdog Mike Baird had every right to go into the 2019 State Election as a clear favourite, but his greyhound racing ban threatened to make him a huge underdog.

The Premier was left with very little choice but to back down from his decision to axe the greyhound industry if he wanted to save his political career.

But questions will now be raised over whether Mr Baird has put his political life ahead of the welfare of animals, which he originally said was at significant risk if the greyhound industry continued.

Despite crowds of only a few hundred turning up at race tracks and greyhound racing being something of a forgotten pastime in Sydney, the ban really grabbed the attention of the entire state.

I doubt Mr Baird ever predicted the political storm this story ultimately became. The whole thing has been an embarrassment to his government.

The question now is whether the right decision was made in the end and if the greyhound industry really does have what it takes to reform.

I doubt this will be the end of the story.

Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) confirmed this week that all of the 640 new residents will be maximum security inmates, including 400 males and 240 females.

“CSNSW recently announced a proposal to expand the existing 180 bed women’s prison to include an additional 240 maximum security places for female inmates,” a CSNSW spokeswoman said.

“CSNSW is also proposing to build a new 400 bed ‘rapid-build’ maximum security facility for males to accommodate the escalating prison population.”

She said prison security will be appropriately increased to manage the new population, to maintain CSNSW’s perception as a “good and responsible neighbour”.

But there’s no denying the new correctional centre will be vastly different to its current form, that hosts special programs to rehabilitate women.

Councillor Marcus Cornish said it would mean some of Australia’s worst criminals would be housed in Emu Plains.

“We need to send a unified message to the State Government that this prison is not acceptable,” he said.

Cr Thain said the recent announcement of 400 maximum security males on the site was made without consultation with Penrith Council or the community.

“I don’t want the Government going to the community and giving the impression that they have consulted in any way with Council on this,” he said.

“We are not owning this in any shape or form.”

Penrith Council will receive the final concept and flood modelling for the expansion “shortly”, to which the community will be able to provide feedback.

‘Basil’ Blake were killed when their trucks collided on Lenore Drive just after 1.30pm last Thursday, October 6.

Investigations into the incident have led police to believe a truck carrying mixed goods, with Mr Blake at the helm driving for AK Group, was travelling in an easterly direction when it crossed over to the wrong side of the road and collided with a truck travelling in a westerly direction carrying bricks.

Moments later he was struck, resulting in both trucks going up in flames.

Safety is now in the spotlight after Traffic and Highway Patrol Officers, Crash Investigators and Roads and Maritime Services inspectors raided AK Group Trucking in Kemps Creek, and examined a number of

vehicles and company fatigue records on Monday.

“Sadly, in light of the tragedy on our road last week, Traffic and Highway Patrol and Roads and Maritime Services inspectors have had to come together again to ensure those involved are operating their fleets safely on our roads,” said Traffic and Highway Patrol Command’s Acting Assistant Commissioner, David Driver.

“With defects, fatigue, and other issues

identified, we will work closely with Roads and Maritime Services to ensure operators are complying in the hope that we can prevent future tragic events occurring on NSW roads.”

Tributes have flowed in for both drivers over the past week.

“This is a page for my beautiful daddy... he will never stop trucking in our hearts,” Mr Blake’s daughter Whitney wrote on Facebook.

Chief Inspector at Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Simon Maund, described the scene of the accident as “horrific, chaotic and panicked”.

“We don’t have any idea at this stage why the truck crossed the road,” he said.

“We can’t say speed was a factor but it is an 80km zone meaning a closing rate of 160km so it is possible a fair bit of speed could have caused the incident – we don’t know right now.”

hey do countless hours of volunteer work every year but local Lions Clubs are in serious danger of dying out if they don’t receive a new influx of members.

The Nepean Blue Mountains region is home to Lions Clubs from Penrith, Emu Plains, Cambridge Park and Winmalee, with all of them participating in numerous community projects each year.

Desperate for new members, the group say the community will suffer if clubs like theirs close.

Member of Cambridge Park Lions Club, Alan Bideleux, said it isn’t just Lions Clubs that are finding it difficult to find new members.

“All Lions Clubs and Rotary Clubs are finding it really hard – we really need new members,” he said.

“I don’t think we will fold up immediately but we are all getting older and we can’t do as much as we used to be able to.

“We thoroughly enjoy being able to put something back into the community and if Lions shut up shop, the community would, unfortunately, be that much poorer.”

Member numbers have been dwindling for years now as men who once joined in their 20s have passed away or are forced to leave because age has left them unable to assist their fellow members.

Mr Bideleux told the Weekender locals are always welcome to say hello on a Saturday at the famous Lions chocolate wheel in Westfield Penrith and talk about signing up.

“We can always be seen and spoken to at the plaza on a Saturday morning – we

want to be approached and engage with the community and hopefully find some new members along the way,” he said.

President of Cambridge Park Lions Club, Charles Kennaway, said if you want to know what the club does, just ask.

“We help the community, particularly children and children’s organisations – it’s just what we do,” he said.

“If Lions was no more it would cost the Government a lot of money, all of which we get through fundraising initiatives.”

Mr Kennaway said being a part of Lions is something special.

“I think the best part about it is the pleasure you get out of seeing the smiles on kids’ faces when you help them – it’s beautiful,” he said.

Encouraging younger people to get involved in their clubs has been right at the top of the to-do list – behind supporting the needy in the community.

“We would love younger members – it would help out the Lions so much as well as the community,” Mr Bideleux said.

The Cambridge Park club will be holding a trivia night fundraiser on Saturday, November 12, at Henry Lawson Club in Werrington County with anyone invited to join in.

All money raised will go towards the Lions High School Deaf Camp.

● New research from Destination NSW reveals contemporary visitor information services are the key to attracting more overnight visitors to NSW. The internet and social media were highlighted in DNSW’s recently released Visiting Friends and Relatives Host Research paper as growing areas for people to research and plan their trips.

At least 37% of domestic visitors go online for information and these findings align with Council’s approach to destination marketing.

Penrith’s visitor numbers have grown from 1.07 million to 1.3 million over five years to 2014; an average increase of 58,000 per year.

Judge unhappy with accused’s behaviour in court

A District Court judge has lashed out at an apathetic teenager who fronted court in offensive attire.

Wearing a black muscle shirt with the words “Thug Life” sprawled on the front, Faufata Filipo appeared in the dock at Penrith District Court last Friday to be sentenced for break and enter.

In a stinging exchange, Judge Mark Buscombe brought home the seriousness of his actions after it quickly became evident the 18-year-old was trivialising matters.

“Do you think that’s appropriate attire to wear to court when you’re being sentenced for an aggravated break, enter and steal offence,” Judge Buscombe scolded.

“Do you think I sit here and not notice whether young men like you take this seriously?”

When he asked Filipo if he had a lawyer, “nup” came the reply.

“Is your family here?”

“No,” Felipo replied.

“Do they think you’re coming home?”

“Yep.” “Well they might be wrong. Do you know what this carries? 20 years imprisonment, that’s what it carries,” he bellowed.

The court heard the Oxley Park resident had been drinking at St Marys’ Monfarville Reserve on November 12, 2015 when he and two co-offenders broke into the canteen, making off with bag fulls of food and confectionery as well as St Marys Baseball Club-branded clothing.

Making a mess with food stuffs, the group ransacked the canteen and stole the club’s Eftpos machine and cash register, with the latter found dumped on the roof of the dugout void of cash.

When confronted by police shortly after, both Filipo and his co-offender, Mike Anufe, 19, fled the scene, with Anufe handing himself in two weeks later.

When asked why he didn’t report to police for the purposes of preparing his

pre-sentence report, Filipo told Judge Buscombe, “I forgot”.

“Do you really think I’m going to wear that,” he roared.

“You answer me when I ask you a question,” he added when Filipo didn’t respond.

“You’re skating on the thinnest of ice.”

Conversely, Anufe, who sat next to Filipo at the opposite end of the dock, had done “everything asked of him”, Judge Buscombe said.

Anufe was ordered to complete 200 hours of community service and pay $1,423.40 in damages to St Marys Baseball Club.

“He’s received 200 hours of community service... which means I’ve been lenient,” Judge Buscombe said.

“If he doesn’t want to do it, that’s fine, he’ll be going to jail... and his parents will be crying in the back of the court again.”

Filipo has been given to October 21 to seek legal representation.

Man who offered up property as drug lab will be released

A meth cook’s assistant who allowed a “sophisticated” drug lab to be set up on his Orchard Hills home will walk free before Christmas after being sentenced last week.

Family members clapped and cried tears of joy at Penrith District Court last Thursday as Peter Criniti, 45, was told he would be released from jail sooner rather than later.

Criniti, who has been on remand since he was charged on October 7, 2015, pleaded guilty to manufacturing or knowingly manufacturing meth amphetamine and allowing his premises to be used to cook the highly addictive drug.

The former produce businessman made headlines earlier this year when his bid for bail in order to donate a kidney to his seriously ill brother was rejected.

The court heard Criniti rented out his shed at his Orchard Hills property to a meth cook for $500 a week and assisted

him in the “shake and bake” method of producing the drug commonly known as ‘ice’.

Judge Stephen Hanley said he was satisfied Criniti, an ice addict himself, played a significantly lesser role than his co-offender, who received a three-year, four-month head sentence.

However, he noted it would be “difficult to carry out” such crimes if people were not prepared to offer up their semi-rural properties for drug labs as the cooking process usually “emanates a fairly strong smell”.

Criniti’s lawyer argued his client had suffered due to an extensive delay, with the Crown only charging the offender two-and-a-half years after the March 2013 offence.

“They saw him on the property with the co-offender, found meth amphetamines on his hands – they had enough evidence to be able to charge him,” he said.

The kidney issue was also raised, with the Crown and Criniti’s lawyer trading barbs over whether or not it met exceptional circumstances.

The Crown argued it didn’t, with the prosecutor submitting “it’s not like [his brother] is in hospital”, eliciting shocked “tsk tsks” from the gallery.

“There was a period before he was on remand when he could have not used ice and shed the weight and he would have been able to donate his kidney,” she said.

However his lawyer said he was no longer under the “diminished responsibility of a drug addict” and would be willing to give his brother, who now had no functioning kidneys, a matching one upon release.

“Is the need for dialysis to avoid death, mind you every second day to avoid death, a very compelling situation – I’d say it is,” Criniti’s lawyer said.

Judge Hanley said while he accepted Criniti’s brother was in a “dire physical situation” he was satisfied it constituted a significant rather than exceptional circumstance.

He was sentenced to two years and four months jail, with a 14-month non-parole period.

With time already served, he will be eligible for parole on December 6.

Frosty reception from court

A Penrith “street dealer” busted selling drugs to an undercover cop will spend the next two-and-a-half years in the slammer.

Graeme Barry Frost, 52, appeared before Penrith District Court last Friday charged with ongoing drug supply, possessing a replica pistol and three counts of driving while disqualified.

The court heard Frost was collared on October 12 last year after supplying the undercover operative a total of 3.2g of ice, with the exchanges taking place mostly in the offender’s car at Jamison Park.

Frost, a former truck driver turned health pensioner, told the court he started using “shakers” in the late 80s to stay awake, and when production of the tablets ceased, moved onto meth amphetamines then ‘ice’.

Judge Mark Buscombe said it was evident Frost was only a “low-level street dealer” who supplied to feed his own drug habit.

Nevertheless, he condemned “those trafficking in prohibited drugs, drugs which are causing the destruction of lives, families and the community generally”, especially in an area already steeped in social disadvantage.

“It’s a shocking cycle, I just see it all the time,” Judge Buscombe said.

“Clearly locking people up doesn’t break it. It’s most unfortunate.”

Judge Buscombe said he was “guarded” about Frost’s prospects of rehabilitation given his record, adding he showed little remorse.

The offender, who has 11 prior driving while disqualified convictions, also added another six years to his mammoth ban, taking his total disqualification to 2044.

He is eligible for release in 2018.

Penrith: Man robbed after night out with friends at club

A man was allegedly robbed after a night out in Penrith last weekend.

The 29-year-old Cranebrook man met up with several men at a club in Penrith on Sunday, October 9.

The group were drinking alcohol together before they left the premises in the same car at around 4am.

It’s alleged the 29-year-old became scared and asked the driver of the car to stop at a service station, which he did.

The man entered the service station and purchased some items before deciding to walk home.

It’s alleged a group of men approached him and stopped the car next to him.

They demanded his wallet and mobile phone. Fearing assault, the man complied and handed the items over.

The men are described as Aboriginal in appearance, both with short hair, one about 160cm tall, and the other about 170cm tall.

The vehicle involved is described as a grey Holden.

Police are urging anyone with information in relation to the incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Kingswood: Man charged after producing knife

A man was charged after he allegedly produced a knife to a woman during an argument last week.

At about 7.55pm on Friday, October 7, police were called to a unit complex on the Great Western Highway, Kingswood, following reports of yelling.

It’s alleged a 46-year-old man was having an argument with a 19-year-old woman.

The man allegedly produced a knife whilst yelling at the woman and swung it towards her, narrowly missing her.

It’s alleged a 19-year-old man and a 55-year-old man intervened in the argument and the offender went inside.

Police attended and spoke with all par-

ties involved. The 46-year-old man was arrested and charged with ‘armed with intent to commit indictable offence’, ‘custody of a knife in a public place’, and ‘stalk and intimidate intend fear physical harm’.

He is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Thursday, November 3.

St Marys: Random stop leads to man being charged by police

A man was charged with drug possession after he was stopped for a random breath test last week.

At about 1pm on Tuesday, October 4, police were patrolling Queen Street, St Marys when they stopped a vehicle being driven by a 43-year-old man for the purpose of a random breath test.

The man was asked to produce his licence, which he couldn’t.

Checks on the man revealed his licence had expired.

The man and his vehicle were searched, with police locating an amount of methamphetamine or ‘ice’ in his car.

He was arrested and charged with ‘license expired less than two years before – first offence’, and ‘possess prohibited drug’.

He is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Wednesday, November 23.

Orchard Hills: Driver swerved across all three lanes of M4

A man was charged with a mid-range drink driving offence after he was seen veering across all three lanes twice on the M4 Motorway before he crashed his vehicle.

At about 4.40am on Sunday, October 9, police were driving west along the M4 Motorway near Orchard Hills when they saw a man swerve from the left lane across the middle lane to the right lane before swerving back to the left lane again.

The 23-year-old man then allegedly collided with bushes on the left side of the motorway.

Mike Baird’s legal mess NSW Premier Mike Baird continues to be the subject of backlash in relation to his ban on greyhound racing and his ultimate reversal of the decision, which was announced earlier this week.

The government is now replacing the ban with proposed reforms including a limit on the number of greyhounds bred, a register of greyhounds that monitors their activity from birth to death, and a redesign to existing racetracks with mechanisms such as wider starting boxes to prevent injury.

Now, I must declare an interest here as I hold a minor share in a greyhound in NSW. When the ban was announced, I said that if the contents of the report that formed the basis of Mike Baird’s decision to ban the industry were true, then I believe more strongly in the humane treatment of all animals than I do in the survival of the greyhound industry.

I said that serious reform was necessary, and I stand by that view.

Unfortunately for Mr Baird it appears that a lack of consultation with the public, together with a flawed report on the state of the industry, has led to a rather embarrassing blight on his political record.

This is arguably not the first time the Baird government has enacted legislation without appropriate consideration of the interests of all stakeholders.

Just this week thousands of people marched through central Sydney campaigning against the state’s controversial lock out laws.

While the events that led to this particular instance of law reform were absolutely tragic, they were the exception to the rule.

The vast majority of people who enjoyed Sydney’s nightlife were not subject to or the perpetrators of alcohol fuelled violence.

Two years on and members of the public and an industry which Sydney had become so well known for are still up in arms about a decision made by a government who are struggling to understand what their constituents want when it comes to moral and social issues.

The overwhelming message seems to be that just because Mike Baird doesn’t spend his Saturdays betting on the dogs or embracing Sydney’s nightlife doesn’t mean that his constituents don’t.

At present, Baird’s tenure as Premier is being defined by two major law reforms. One that he has now backflipped on, and another that a significant portion of the population are at odds with.

It will be interesting to see if people vote with their feet at the next election, and if we do have a change of government, what the legal implications of this will be.

Complaints about station drop, but Labor says more to be done DALE DRINKWATER

enrith Railway Station has again found itself in the top 10 most complained about stations in NSW. Shadow Minister for Transport Jodi McKay obtained a list through freedom of information laws, that shows Penrith Station at number 10, with 20 official complaints in the last financial year.

Commuters were concerned over a range of issues such as car parks, lighting, help points, PA systems, toilets, lifts, escalators, graffiti and rubbish.

Complaints decreased from 28 in the previous year, which Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said is due to regular cleaning and spot checks by staff.

“We have also implemented a regime of regular deep cleaning of all trains and stations across the network,” he said.

“As a result of our efforts, complaints about the cleanliness of stations have declined significantly – by more than 43 per cent over the past two years.”

Compliments toward the station have also increased by 20 per cent in the last three years, a trend that could continue with a major upgrade to the station.

“I am currently delivering the biggest upgrade to Penrith Station in decades, Ms McKay and Labor simply forgot us,” Mr Ayres said.

Londonderry MP Prue Car said while an upgrade is all well and good, the basic cleanliness of Penrith Station had not been taken care of.

Schools in west get a raw deal Figures prove schools on Sydney’s leafy north shore get more funding than those in Penrith a significant divide between Sydney’s east and west.

“The figures clearly show that whether your children attend a public school, a Catholic school or an independent school, students in western Sydney are getting less than students in the eastern suburbs,” she said.

“The fact is every student in every school in western Sydney is worse off under Simon Birmingham and Malcolm Turnbull.”

Federal Minister for Education and Training, Simon Birmingham, said schools under the SRS in 2014 received a 4.7 per cent increase to get them to the SRS quicker, higher than the annual increase of 3.6 per cent for those at the SRS. “Schools in 2014 already above the SRS would still receive increases in funding because of the previous government’s promise that ‘no school would be worse off’,” he said.

“The schools in western Sydney which are below the SRS are receiving a faster growth in their Commonwealth funding than those above – they have not missed out on anything as the new school funding arrangements necessarily involved a transition period to move them up to the desired SRS level.”

Three private schools in the Penrith area received less than 84 per cent of their minimum entitlement of Gonski funding in that year, according to Federal Government data made public after a Senate estimates hearing.

The data revealed what percentage of their Schooling Resource Standard (SRS) each school received.

It showed Penrith Christian School received just 79.7 per cent of the minimum, St Pauls Grammar School Penrith got 78.2 per cent, and Nepean District Christian Education Association (which includes Nepean Christian School) received 83.7 per cent.

That is compared to schools like Loreto Kirribilli and North Sydney’s Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College, which received 283 and 277 per cent of their minimum respectively.

“I thought he was going to choke me” EXCLUSIVE: Woman’s precious $9,500 necklace stolen during daring daylight robbery in Penrith JADE ALIPRANDI

Kingswood resident has been left shaken by a heartless, daring robbery in the Penrith CBD. Tracy Lowe was attacked in broad daylight outside Penrith Train Station last week, with expensive jewellery stolen during the frightening attack.

“I thought he was going to choke me,” Ms Lowe said of the incident last Monday.

She was wearing her $9,500 solid gold chain necklace around her neck as she walked from Penrith Westfield to the bus stop just after 2pm to catch the Kingswood bus home.

The 56-year-old, who describes her necklace as “something special” as it was a 20th wedding anniversary present, was sitting on an empty seat when she saw a man asking a woman with two children for money.

“I didn’t really think much of it – I just thought he obviously needs money,” Ms Lowe told the Weekender.

“Not long after that he came and sat next to me and asked me for money but I told him I didn’t have any change. Within the next one or two minutes I could feel he was just constantly staring at me.”

The man then stood up and pulled Ms Lowe’s solid gold necklace from her neck, at the same time pulling Ms Lowe to the ground.

“I felt his hands grab my neck and that’s when I thought he was going to choke me but he yanked the chain so hard that I fell to the ground and he started running,” Ms Lowe said.

“That’s when I yelled for help.”

Two men ran after the man but while pursuing him, the offender allegedly produced a knife, causing the two men to walk away.

Ms Lowe was left shaken by the incident, particularly given it happened in a public place during the day.

“It’s pretty scary that you can be waiting for a bus and you get attacked, you just don’t know these days – everyone needs to be vigilant when out and about,” Ms Lowe said.

A number of witnesses to the incident have been identified and investigations are continuing by Penrith detectives.

The man is described as being 30 to 40-years-old, with black curly hair, a tan complexion and is unshaven.

s a Sheriff Officer for 27 years you’d be forgiven for thinking Joseph Coote had seen it all.

And you’d be right.

The veteran security enforcer retired last Thursday after more than three decades in the industry.

After starting out as a bricky, he moved into Corrective Services at age 28 and didn’t look back.

Mr Coote, who arrived to take up his post at Penrith Local Court in 1993, admitted he’d been involved in a fair few incidents over the years.

One of the ‘hairiest’ preceded his time at Penrith and took place at the Supreme Court in Sydney during the early 90s.

Dangerously outnumbered, three to four hundred supporters of two factions started warring outside the building, prompting the lock-down of NSW’s highest state court. “When the riot started there was eight to 10 of us,� the father-of-two recalled. “It’s the only time I can remember when the doors of the Supreme Court

were locked to keep people out. It was surreal. People were banging on the glass doors. You did [fear for your life] but got on with the job. We did our best with what resources we had and we were successful on that day. No one got badly hurt.�

The Jordan Springs resident said the role had changed “massively� since he first started out, with officers now able to carry a baton, capsicum spray, a radio as well as cuffs.

He said he will miss his fellow officers and other staff members of the court, as well as interacting with a large crosssection of the community, but not the worst part of the job – evictions.

As for the strangest things he’s seen put through the screening machine? “A bloke living rough came in one day with a swag that had an axe in it,� he said. “He thought it was quite normal to walk around with a small axe... and a lot of little toy dogs.�

Meanwhile, he and his wife are wasting no time enjoying his newfound freedom, with plans to travel around the world before they welcome their first grandchild early next year.

One in three cancer cases preventable, Cancer Council says

man who has given so much to the community keeps on giving, even in his darkest days.

59-year-old Merv Adlington was the founder of Penrith Community Men’s Shed, and has now used a devastating diagnosis of stage four melanoma to create Penrith’s first melanoma support group.

The new Western Sydney Melanoma Support Group (WSMSG) was formed at the beginning of October, and will have its first monthly meeting on Tuesday, November 1.

Mr Adlington formed the group after finding there was nothing of its kind in the area that supports people with malignant melanoma and their families.

“I was diagnosed with stage four terminal melanoma in March,” he said.

“Since then it has quickly spread to my left lung, liver and now to my brain. It has been a struggle for myself and my family so my wife encouraged me to seek out a support group to attend.”

Mr Adlington and his wife Robyn could not find a support group any closer than North Sydney, and decided with his sickness, it was too far to drive.

enrith residents are being encouraged to make small changes to their way of living with Cancer Council’s latest campaign ‘1 in 3 Cancers’.

Evidence has revealed that one in three cases of cancer are preventable by leading a healthier lifestyle, adding up to around 37,000 preventable cases in Australia every year.

Poor diet, being overweight, not doing enough physical activity and drinking too much alcohol collectively contribute to nearly as many cancer cases as smoking.

Regional Manager for the Greater Western Sydney region of Cancer Council NSW, Rory Alcock, said the campaign will help people make positive changes to help reduce their risk of the disease.

“While skin cancer prevention and antismoking campaigns are now commonplace in Australian society, this is the first mass media campaign in which we have addressed comprehensive cancer prevention messaging around the other lifestyle factors we know increase cancer risk,” he said.

I read the article in today’s Western Weekender (October 7), about Councillors John Thain and Tricia Hitchen having disabled persons in their families, and the building of Disabled Adult Changerooms in the Penrith CBD. I was gobsmacked at this heartwarming story, and full of admiration for two such caring people, plus being really shocked at my ignorance of the tribulations of carers of disabled people – we, able-bodied people, with able-bodied family members, probably have never fully realised just how hard it is for people with disabled family members to get around our city – we all know about disabled parking, disabledfriendly shopping centres, and even disabled toilets, but I wonder how many people (myself included) realise just how important it is to have facilities to change and help our disabled adults, while they are out and about with their carers. It must certainly be a major effort to lift the disabled person/s, so what a wonderful idea to have a crane in these rooms, for the benefit of lifting the persons, and making it so much easier for their carers.

Kids can cool off with a splash this summer DALE DRINKWATER

rskine Park residents will be able to cool off in a new ‘splash pad’ at Phoenix Reserve this summer.

The ‘splash pad’ will be operational

by November and follows the successful installation of a similar concept at Werrington Lakes.

Penrith Mayor John Thain was over the moon with the number of families at Werrington’s splash pad on Monday’s 31 degree day – a fitting temperature to encourage locals to keep cool during summer’s hottest days.

“I’m rapt at how many people are using this,” he told the Weekender, before adding that Council hopes to build more of the same in other areas of the city.

“Kids can come around when it’s warm and they are in the shade.”

Werrington Lakes’ splash pad is one example of how residents and visitors keep themselves cool when the mercury rises, and avoid serious health issues.

“Take a refreshing dip in one of the area’s many swimming pools or let the kids cool off and have fun at the same time at splash pads,” Cr Thain said.

The splash pads are one element of Council’s Cooling the City Strategy, that

aims to combat the Urban Heat Island Effect across the Penrith region.

“The strategy influences all Council planning and promotes natural cooling through landscaping, the addition of water features and clever design,” Cr Thain said.

“Tree planting provides much-needed shade and is one of the key initiatives Council is delivering under the strategy, all of which are contributing to cooling the city.”

Cr Thain also recommended to stay indoors and keep well hydrated, particularly on hot days.

“However, if you’re out and about, you can also find shade in Council’s buildings and amenities such as libraries or leisure centres,” he said.

Cr Thain said it’s important the very young and the old take precautionary measures to beat the heat this summer, and the NSW Health recommendations are a great place to start.

Water safety in spotlight ahead of busy summer JADE ALIPRANDI

ummer is right around the corner and parents are being reminded to take action now when it comes to their child and swim safety.

The 2016 Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report revealed 280 people drowned in Australian waterways from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016, with the highest amount of drownings occurring at the beach, closely followed by rivers.

Marketing and Business Development Manager at Nepean Swim and Fitness, Julie Fletcher, said the key to preventing drownings is supervision.

“When it comes to rivers, inland waterways, and beaches, the layer of protection in barriers is gone because there are none, so supervision becomes crucial,” she told the Weekender.

“The pillars of protection are barriers, supervision, learning to swim and CPR – you need to follow these to be safe around the water.”

The report shows that NSW recorded the highest amount of drownings for the year at 34 per cent.

Ms Fletcher said with the summer family hot spot of Nepean River, parents need to be extremely vigilant around waterways.

“When you go out near waterways and rivers make sure you take your phone and that it’s charged in case an incident ever did happen,” she said.

“Children should always be within arms’ reach of their parents – it goes further than just supervision when at the river or at a beach with barriers removed from the equation.”

The report also revealed that 81 per cent of drownings in Australia in zero to four-year-olds were from falling into water, something which Ms Fletcher said is preventable.

“Young lives are still being lost and I understand how easily it happens but it just makes our mission of educating the public even more important,” she said.

“I’m just really disheartened that people are still losing their lives from drowning when it can be prevented – it makes me even more determined to get this message out there.

“It’s all about using common sense and understanding that a recreational situation can turn into a dangerous one in a split second.”

Walk helps organisation fund support for premature babies

he day after her baby shower, at just 32 weeks pregnant, Penrith resident Karli McGrath was told to prepare for the worst when she realised she was going to give birth to a premature baby.

For four days she was in and out of the delivery room with doctors trying to prevent her from giving birth so soon by giving her morphine and steroids.

However on May 30 last year, Ms McGrath and her partner Clint welcomed their son Kade into the world.

“I was exhausted after spending so long in active labour,” Ms McGrath said.

“The baby was in distress too so they eventually had to break my waters and an hour and a half later, he was here.”

Being born at the gestational stage where the lungs develop caused Kade to have temporary breathing problems resulting in him moving into the neonatal intensive care unit.

While Kade is now a happy and healthy 16-month-old baby, other families don’t always have the same experience.

Life’s Little Treasures Foundation will be holding their seventh Walk for Prems in Sydney on Sunday, October 23, with Ms McGrath and her partner now regular participants.

ingswood’s Chris Roberts and his landscaping teammate Jordan Cahill are TAFE’s second best landscapers for their age.

The pair won silver at the WorldSkills Australia competition held in Melbourne last week, but missed out on the top place by just 3.81 marks out of 100.

Mr Roberts said the three day challenge, that went for a total of 18 hours, wore the pair out but was well worth it.

“It was a tough few days, you basically come back after the competition and

fall asleep immediately. We were a little bit disappointed, but so happy we came second in Australia in our age for landscaping,” he said.

The pair had planned out their landscaping project ahead of the competition, but were given a last minute surprise.

“We had to do a little stone wall and two stone pathways at the last minute instead of just two stone walls,” he said.

They also ran into some challenges with measurements for their besser block wall, but it all came together in the end, with a little timber table, a turf mound, a little Zen garden with pebbles and plants along a back wall.

mu Plains resident Jill Huber’s independence was ripped away from her because she waited too long to seek help for a debilitating eye condition.

At 18-years-old Ms Huber was diagnosed with glaucoma, and her vision slowly disintegrated to the point she couldn’t cross the road on her own.

It wasn’t until her mid-30s that she contacted Guide Dogs to learn how to use a long cane, to enable her to walk without others.

“My vision varies, I’m totally blind in my left eye and have a small amount of vision in my right eye,” she said.

Ms Huber is one of 300,000 Australians who suffers from glaucoma, which slowly damages the optic nerves connecting the eye to the brain.

A Guide Dogs Australia survey revealed a staggering 26 per cent of respondents waited more than 10 years before contacting Guide Dogs NSW/ACT for help.

If left untreated, glaucoma can cause tunnel vision and lead to blindness.

Ms Huber is encouraging others to seek help before it becomes too late.

“It is confronting and, as a result in the past, I have been treated for depression, but I’ve found taking a keen interest in my community has helped enormously,” she said.

Ms Huber has been keeping herself busy through the Penrith Vision Impaired Support Group, and now has her guide dog, Cassie, who gives her confidence to go about her daily life.

“I try not to dwell on anything and keep as active as possible,” she said.

“The Penrith Vision Support Group has been fantastic. If anyone has any problems the group helps each other out, it’s a great network of friends.”

Guide Dogs Australia is launching their ‘Don’t Delay, Seek Help Today’ campaign on International White Cane Day on Saturday, October 15.

CEO of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, Dr Graeme White, said every day 28 Australians are diagnosed with irreversible vision loss, including nine who become blind.

“It is important we reach out to ensure those who are experiencing problems with their sight maintain their independence to live the life they choose,” he said.

Mr White said seeking help from Guide Dogs can help reduce the risk of falls, hip fractures and depression.

Car park to close due to works Selected parts of Union Road Car Park will be closed this weekend and next weekend to allow ground testing works to be carried out.

“We want to minimise any disruption to car parking during this

process, which is why the work is being done on weekends,” said Mayor John Thain.

The work is being conducted in line with the Penrith Progression blueprint for the City Centre.

ast year my family got involved in triathlons (my husband and children participate and I manage them!). Aside from the benefits and enjoyment of the sport itself, we have greatly enjoyed the friendly and supportive nature of everyone involved. While participants are certainly competing to perform at their best, the encouragement between competitors, and the emphasis on helping each other succeed, is unlike anything we have seen before.

This was highlighted recently when my youngest child was having a go at his first mini triathlon. He was far behind all the other boys, and while they waited for him to finish, one of the fathers encouraged them all to run the last lap with my son so that he wasn’t finishing by himself. So they all joined him on the last lap, cheering him on (along with all the parents).

Afterwards, one of the boys shook my son’s hand and told him “well done”. It was such a lovely display of sportsmanship, done without patronising my son and giving him encouragement to keep

doing his best. My son felt valued and encouraged even though he came last, and the other boys learnt how to be gracious and supportive.

I wonder if local and small business would better thrive if we had this model and attitude in our business communities?

I have definitely witnessed positive moments like this in some business circles. But I have also witnessed far too much of the opposite behaviour that correlates more with ‘winning at any cost’. Collaborative approaches to conducting business are viewed by many business owners as contrary to success. In some cases, they may be correct: it doesn’t make good business sense to share all your ‘secrets’.

But I do wonder whether the desire to be ‘the best’ leaves some of us a bit jaded and wondering what the point of being in business is all about? Could being less worried about ‘competing’ and more concerned with supporting each other in our business journeys, result in far more satisfaction in our achievements?

ole Traders and Partners who employ people know that they are required to put aside superannuation for their employees. But there is no requirement for them to set aside their own super. According to the Association of Super Funds of Australia, only 29 per cent of self-employed people have super funds.

There are various reasons including insufficient funds for super contributions, insufficient long-term planning and a lack of knowledge about the benefits of contributing to a super fund.

Superannuation is a long-term investment that, in most circumstances, can only be accessed upon reaching the required retirement age, currently 65 years. This ensures that when you fully retire or reach the retirement age, you have a nest egg to draw on. You won’t have to sell your business or continue to work if you’re strapped for cash.

Contributions to your super can be used to reduce your taxable income.

Depending on your age you can claim up to $35,000 pre-tax contribution against your assessable income. (For exact

contributions caps, consult the Australian Tax Office (ATO)). Be careful not to claim more than the contribution caps as you may find yourself paying extra tax. There are also additional tax incentives to pay into your spouse’s super as well.

You must remember that these contributions need to be paid into a complying superannuation fund, and this includes self-managed super funds (SMSF). The ATO has a series of videos to help you establish and maintain a SMSF. It is important to allow for your own super when preparing your annual budget. Ensure that your super payments do not greatly impact on the cash in your business. In effect a payment to your super takes money from the business and is recorded as drawings in your financial records. This is because your superannuation benefits you, the individual, rather than you, the small business person.

Lions show great community spirit

$100,000 donated to community projects across Australia Lions Clubs have announced they have donated more than $100,000 to community projects throughout Australia through the ‘Lions Australia Community 100 Program’.

The program, marking the centenary of the organisation, will assist more than 100 worthy causes around Australia.

700 community organisations applied for funds under the program including projects for support for people with dementia, sports programs to integrate refugees, resilience building workshops for at-risk youth, community gardens as well as domestic violence and mental health initiatives.

The Penrith area had a handful of projects selected including The Lions Club of Penrith working on assisting with a donation to the Nepean Therapy Dogs to help expand their book resources and providing a more comfortable atmosphere for clients.

W

hen Rodney Rude tells you his plan for retirement is to buy a donkey that he can use to get to the shops, it’s hard to know whether or not he’s joking.

After 50 years in the industry – 64 if you count his radio appearance at the age of nine – one of Australia’s most loved comedians is hanging up his bawdy, politically incorrect hat to spend more time with his family.

“I actually retired in 2013, but I lied,” Rodney laughed.

“My Dad was 93 then and the whole idea was that I’d been doing this a long time and I wanted to look after Dad. “But then my brother – about nine months ago – said he was going to retire and he was going to look after him.”

After making the decision to say goodbye to the stage Rodney decided he couldn’t leave without first saying goodbye to fans with a regional tour, including a stop off at the Evan Theatre later this month.

“I just wanted to go to some of the places that I’d been as a young man, where I’d started my career,” he said.

“That’s pretty much why I thought I’d do this last bunch of shows.”

Rodney Rude has become a staple in

record and CD collections across the country since his first release ‘Rodney Rude Live’ in 1984.

Since then he’s gone on to sell millions of records – with classic Rude titles like ‘Rats Arse’ and ‘Ya Mum’s Bum’ – while bringing countless laughs to audiences around the world.

The key to Rodney’s success is the way he embraces those typical Aussie characteristics of telling a yarn and taking the piss.

“I’ve totally ignored all the perimeters of political correctness and just said anything that comes into my head,” he said.

“I haven’t tried to figure out whether it’s a current topic of condemnation or whatever the hell it is, I’ve just said anything I bloody like.”

It’s a strategy that’s kept audiences laughing, but it’s also become a dose of humorous medicine to those who need it most.

“You get young people saying ‘oh Rude, in the past three years I’ve had depression and you pulled me through and you cheered me up’,” Rodney said.

“It’s just fantastic.”

While he may be saying farewell to the stage, the iconic comedian has a surprise for fans who just can’t get enough.

“Over the years I’ve recorded so much material, in fact at the moment I’ve got 12 different albums sitting in the studio or in the shed,” he laughed.

“I’m going to slowly start releasing them so that even when I retire people are going to be able to access some new material.”

hen the Western Weekender was invited to check out this year’s EB Games Expo we knew we needed a couple of gaming experts to help us out.

So we sent along our junior reporter Cooper Dunn and his assistant Jaxon Dunn to bring our readers all the latest gaming gossip.

What were your favourite games from the EB Games Expo and why?

‘WWE 2K17’: There’s a heap of new characters and you can also play in different arenas and different areas such as backstage as well as the ring.

The new version of the game allows you to fight not only your opponent but you can also fight the crowd! There’s lots of new equipment to assist in the fight, and taunting your opponent becomes easier in the latest version.

‘Call of Duty – Infinite Warfare’: I’m looking forward to ‘Infinite Warfare’ because it gives players all new abilities and weapons to play with. One of the new abilities allows you to select a specific character to play as, you can use a specialist ability and you can upgrade

your specialist ability. You can also collect salvage to turn regular weapons into prototype weapons. The fact that they are bringing back a remastered version of a previous ‘Call of Duty’ is really exciting.

‘Just Dance’: This was a game I played several times at the Expo and I loved it!

It’s so much fun and a really cool way to get fit. It’s really colourful visually, the music is awesome and heaps of fun to dance to, and the moves are really fun. I loved being able to dance to ‘Watch Me’, those moves are awesome.

Did you get to check out any new technology?

I got a chance to play ‘Minecraft’ with a Virtual Reality Headset. This made me feel like I was actually in the game and it was really, really awesome. At first, it was so realistic I found it tricky to get my balance, but once I did it was so much fun. It was really fun to play with ‘Minecraft’ because it makes you feel like you are really in the blocky world and actually creating the images you see in your mind.

What are some of the future trends in gaming?

I think gaming is becoming way more realistic and very interactive. The ability

elax and celebrate the arrival of the warmer weather with the fresh summery vibes of New Zealand’s roots reggae outfit Katchafire.

The band will be bringing their new track and video ‘Burn it Down’ to audiences at the Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, October 15.

To get that authentic reggae sound, Katchafire worked with writer and producer Stephen ‘Rev’ Maxwell from Kingston, Jamaica.

The track was recorded at the iconic Tuff Gong Studios, which was founded by legendary reggae artist Bob Marley in 1965.

It’s a fitting location considering Katchafire started out in 2000 as a Bob Marley tribute band.

The group have had a busy couple of years, playing to audiences around the world on their massive 2015 ‘Summer High’ tour.

With a new horn section, new music and an infectious feel-good sound Katchafire are ready to bring reggae to western Sydney.

t’s over 40 years now that Yellow Label has been at the heart of winemaking at Wolf Blass wines, delivering to buyers a range of wines from South Australia that are consistently fruit driven and full-on in flavour.

And amongst latest releases is a 2015 Chardonnay out of a vintage that started warm and dry, and was followed by much-needed rain and ultimately warm days and relatively cool nights. Then a final burst of heat in late January saw an early and condensed harvest, and as a result more of those wonderfully full-on flavour wines.

The 2015 Yellow Label Chardonnay particularly benefitted from all this, with loads of stone fruits to the fore and nicely integrated oak, and whilst made with food predominantly in mind, it can be equally enjoyed as a glass or three on its own.

And as well, although best enjoyed young and fresh, some short-term cellaring will see it develop further complexity.

Pay $18 and enjoy this one with what its makers suggest – creamy veal Stroganoff with mushrooms and parsley, or pumpkin ravioli with sage butter sauce.

One to note: If you like your reds big and hearty, one to grab is the just-released 2013 Tim Adams Shiraz (pictured).

A blend of fruit off three Clare Valley vineyards, this is a gutsy drop that leads on the palate with blackberry and mulberry fruit flavours, some spiciness and hints of mint, and a strong reminder that it spent 24 months maturing in American oak.

And surprisingly it’s just $25 to enjoy now, or to tuck away in the cellar to around the mid-2020’s.

Rated M // KATE REID ‘Ghostbusters’ was surely one of the most talked about film releases of 2016.

The remake of the 1984 cult classic caused chaos among fans of the original, with the all-female cast being one of the main topics of discussion.

Now audiences can see what all the fuss was about when the film hits the small screen this week.

Heading up the cast are Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, who are joined by ‘Saturday Night Live’ stars Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.

When a thousand troublemaking ghouls take over the city of Manhattan, it’s up to this team of ghost-catchers to stop them.

The film also stars Aussie man of the moment Chris Hemsworth as the not-so-bright but funny secretary, Kevin.

‘Ghostbusters’ is directed by Paul Feig, who worked with Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy on the 2011 comedy hit ‘Bridesmaids’.

Remaking a classic is always going to be a big risk, and there’s very few films that end up better than the originals. But the reviews for ‘Ghostbusters’ have been much more positive than the initial backlash would suggest.

An orphanage with a difference comes to the big screen with the release of ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children’.

Jake (Asa Butterfield) stumbles across clues to a mystery that leads him to a strange place known as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children; but that’s

only the start of the adventure. When Jake gets to know the residents, their special powers and their enemies he realises that his own ‘peculiarity’ may be the only thing that can save them.

The film is based on the novel of the same name by American author Ransom Riggs.

The cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Judi Dench, Ruper Everett, Allison Janney, Chris O’Dowd and Eva Green as Miss Peregrine.

With a dark macabre story there really was no other director that could have taken on the role than Tim Burton.

Movie review site Rotten Tomatoes has praised Burton for the film’s visuals, though the narrative has not been as well received.

It’s been a long, cold winter, but with daylight savings finally here and longer, warmer days, it’s finally feeling like summer is just around the corner – and with it comes both good and bad news.

The good news first… this year’s National Drowning Report 2016 released by Royal Life Saving in September announced a decrease in the number of children aged 0-4 drowning between July 2015 and June 2016, and a decrease in the number of drowning deaths at Inland Waterways – very encouraging statistics indeed!

In further good news, since I last wrote earlier this year, local swim schools Nepean Aquatic Centre and Eva Bory’s Swim School were recognised by the Australian Swim Schools Association for their contribution to water safety as the recipients of their 2016 National Swim SAFER Award.

This is great for both the swim schools, and the local

community, as we can be secure in the knowledge that our children have access to quality swim education and instruction.

The bad news is, there is still much work to be done, as 280 people still lost their lives during the reported period in Australia, including nine children under the age of 14 drowning in NSW alone, most in backyard swimming pools.

NSW recorded the highest number of drownings than any other state with 96 deaths, and males accounted for 91 per cent of all drowning deaths in NSW. 27 per cent of all people who drowned were swimming or playing in the water just prior to drowning.

So let’s look forward to summer, and all the fun in and around the water it will bring, but let’s also, as a community, keep safety at the forefront of our minds at all times, and try to reduce these statistics locally.

Feeding fat trimmings (such as from chicken or steak) can also be dangerous and lead to a condition called pancreatitis.

It is best to stick to pet foods and a mixture of cooked lean meats and vegetables.

Xylitol is a sugar substitute used as a sweetener in products such as chewing gum, some toothpastes and food products.

While it is safe for humans, it is metabolised differently in dogs and can lead to low blood sugar resulting in tremors, seizures and even death.

It is estimated that xylitol is 100 times more toxic to dogs than chocolate!

We also often see sick dogs after eating various types of fertilisers and blood and bone products.

In general, fertilisers tend to cause mild to moderate gastrointestinal irritation and can result in excessive drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and lethargy.

Some fertiliser types such as blood and bone meal have large amounts of bacterial and fungal ingredients and can cause severe gastrointestinal upsets – these animals often need treatment in hospital.

If your pet eats a fertiliser, it is important to seek veterinary attention immediately as there is a vast variety of different products with different toxicity levels.

It is very important that you keep products that may be dangerous to your pets out of reach, and remember that dogs are inquisitive – so find a good hiding spot!

Spring is here and summer is fast approaching, meaning motivation and activity levels are peaking!

Here are five ways to stay injury-free training this spring getting ready for that summer body...

Strength training Strength training helps to increase tissue tolerance and endurance through loading.

In recent studies strength exercises have shown a tendency toward reducing injury rates. It was shown to reduce sporting injuries to less than 1/3 and overuse injuries were almost halved!

Recover The most important part of recovery is REST. Not incorporating rest into your training regime leads to muscle fatigue and results in overuse injuries.

Other effective recovery techniques include stretching, foam rolling, hydrotherapy, cryotherapy and the use of compression garments. Set aside 10-20mins after training dedicated to recovery tech-

niques, have a rest day and see the difference!

Appropriate footwear Correct and supportive footwear ensures your feet are in an optimal biomechanical position, which reduces excessive pressure on the whole body. Everybody’s biomechanics are different; therefore each individual requires a certain type of shoe.

If you are unsure what type of shoe is best for you consult a health care professional such as a podiatrist.

Hydration and sleep Water provides muscles with energy at a cellular level by assisting with transportation of vitamins and minerals in the body. Not drinking enough water can lead to waste build up, muscular fatigue and stiffness. A lack of sleep leads to poor brain function and poor performance. We need adequate sleep for our bodies to repair themselves through protein synthesis and hormone release that occur during sleep cycles.

Warm up and cool down Warming up prepares the body for activity by increasing your heart rate and the circulation of blood and oxygen to muscles. Conversely, cooling down helps decrease heart rate slowly and drain waste build up in muscles.

• Include meat free meals into your diet. If you have a friend who’s vegetarian/vegan ask them for some tips.

• Boiled soggy broccoli is disgusting; stir fried broccoli with garlic, sesame oil and chili is delicious. Knowing how to prepare veggies will

make a huge difference.

• Who doesn’t love a roast?

Stick those veggies in the oven with some olive oil, garlic and thyme and top with a little gravy when they’re done.

• If you’re a veggie-phobe try hiding them in pies, stews, casseroles, pasta dishes, curries, etc.

• Get together with friends for dinner and have a ‘veggie feast’, with each person bringing a dish that includes their favourite vegetable.

• If you don’t like the idea of eating veggies on their own then get saucy!

It’s much better to eat vegetables with tomato sauce than not eating them at all.

• Keep a bag of frozen vegetables on hand. They’re just as nutritious as fresh and easier to prep.

• Go with what you enjoy, even if it means eating a few serves of the same veggies/salad.

• Try a veggie restaurant/ cafe. Chefs who specialise in vegetarian cooking tend to know the secrets to making plant foods taste amazing.

• Don’t beat yourself up.

If you don’t get to five serves that’s fine, any increase is a step in the right direction.

he Western Sydney Wanderers are once again under fire with football’s governing body after a small portion of fans ignored a pre-game “bring the passion but ditch the flares” warning during last weekend’s historic Sydney Derby.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) issued a show cause notice to the Wanderers on Monday afternoon following an incident during Saturday night’s match against Sydney FC at ANZ Stadium.

Following consideration of submissions received from the club, FFA determined to extend the suspended three competi-

tion point deduction hanging over the club until the end of the current A-League season.

The club also advised it will not appeal FFA’s determination.

The Wanderers were found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute last February, the resultant sanctions including a fine as well as a suspended three competition point deduction.

The duration of the suspended sanction was originally set for a period of 12 months until February 6, 2017, but following the incident in the club’s supporter area at the Sydney Derby last Saturday night in which three flares were lit, Head of A-League Greg O’Rourke stated that the time frame would now be extended.

“Following the lighting of flares on Saturday night in a section of the Western Sydney Wanderers supporter area, the suspended sanction on the club, which was initially enforced up until February 2017, will now be in place until the end of the Hyundai A-League 2016/17 regular season,” he said.

“While we will always consider a range of factors in assessing the seriousness of any anti-social behaviour, the message is simple.

“If there’s a recurrence of the incident from last Saturday night involving flares identified to be let off in the Western Sydney Wanderers supporter area throughout the remainder of the regular season, FFA may well be left with no

alternative other than to deduct points from the club.”

O’Rourke said the FFA were continuing to investigate last weekend’s incident and would continue to work with the club to stamp out the actions of a small minority.

Meanwhile, Western Sydney’s season is off to the worst start imaginable after they were obliterated 4-0 by cross-town rivals Sydney FC in front of an A-League record crowd of 61,880 fans at ANZ Stadium.

“I didn’t see that one coming,” Wanderers coach Tony Popovic said.

In a rematch of last season’s Grand Final, the Wanderers will look to bounce back when they take on Adelaide United tonight. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports.

After battling away on the Aussie boxing scene since her mid-20’s, Blencowe quit her full-time job in retail and turned to the more lucrative world of mixed martial arts when she was 30-years-old.

In 2014 Bellator MMA, the second largest MMA promotional company in the world behind the UFC, saw her potential and signed the boxer turned cage fighter to a multi-fight deal.

Next Saturday Blencowe will compete in her fourth Bellator bout against Canada’s Julia Budd.

After a year without a fight, Blencowe said she can’t wait to step into the cage against the fellow 33-year-old.

“I’m excited for this one because I think my style versus her style will make for a really good fight,” she said.

“Julia’s only lost two fights in the past, and one of those was to Ronda Rousey.

“I’ve watched bits and pieces of her fights before but, since being matched with her, I haven’t watched anything – my coach has been doing all of that while developing my fight plan.”

The mother of two, who originally hails from Port Macquarie, trains almost daily at Lions High Performance Centre inside Valley Fitness in St Marys.

WS Giants forward Toby Greene has capped off an outstanding season, taking out the 2016 Kevin Sheedy Medal.

Following his first All Australian honour last month, the 23-year-old earned the club’s highest individual honour in just his fifth season in the AFL. Greene accepted the award from his inaugural AFL coach Kevin Sheedy following a remarkable season in which he played in all but one game for GWS and kicked 44 goals.

In an extremely close vote count, Greene took the lead for the first time in Round 23 of the Premiership season before polling 17 votes in the Giants’ two Finals to finish with 151 votes, just three ahead of midfielder Tom Scully.

Greene’s breakout 2016 season saw him ranked equal second for the most goal assists in the competition, third for total inside 50s after the regular season, while averaging 21.3 possessions a game.

Giants coach Leon Cameron acknowledged Greene’s football and personal development throughout 2016.

Attracting athletes of all abilities Nepean Tennis to hold Disabilities Open Day at Woodriff Gardens courts this weekend NATHAN TAYLOR

he Nepean District Tennis Association will hold a free Disability Open Day this weekend at the Woodriff Gardens Tennis Complex in Penrith.

To be held this Saturday, October 15, the Nepean Tennis Disability Open Day will cater to everyone with or without a disability.

Featuring modified games of tennis, the local Association’s team of experienced coaches will be on hand to make sure everyone is comfortable and having an enjoyable time.

Nepean Tennis Programs Manager, Carey Sinden, said the idea for a Disability Open Day had been a long time coming.

“We have a couple of kids and adults that we coach with intellectual disabilities, who have succeeded in competitions, and they love it,” she said.

“Now that we’ve got our new hard courts, it also gives us the opportunity to provide wheelchair tennis.

“Anyone that wants to give tennis a go is welcome to come down on Saturday. We want people to know that this is a sport that anyone can do.”

Athletes of all abilities are being encouraged to try tennis

Along with learning everything there is to know about tennis, players will also be treated to a wheelchair tennis exhibition match featuring Australia’s top Paralympic athletes.

“Some of the Australian Wheelies are coming down and will be playing in an exhibition game for us,” Sinden said.

“The table tennis rooms upstairs will also be available for a game of blind tennis, and there will be plenty of prizes handed out along with a delicious barbeque.”

This weekend’s Disability Open Day will be the start of a big push from Nepean Tennis to get more and more people with a disability playing the game.

No matter what your disability, tennis is a viable sporting option for anyone according to Sinden.

“We have a girl here with Down Syndrome who plays in a weekly competition and is quite successful,” she said.

“We are also really trying to push to get into wheelchair tennis coaching as well.”

Around the grounds CRICKET: Penrith’s first grade side are off to a good start against North Sydney in Round 3 of the NSW Premier Cricket competition.

Playing in a two day match at Howell Oval, Penrith won the toss and elected to bat first. Penrith were excellent with the bat, scoring 362 before being dismissed after 80.3 overs. Penrith’s Jonathon Sammut (123) and John DiBartolo (119) well and truly led the way with the bat.

North Sydney hit the crease later that afternoon and at stumps were 1/10.

The match will resume this Saturday from 10.30am.

GRIDIRON: The Nepean Ducks are back to their losing ways, hammered by the West Sydney Pirates 44-14 in Round 6 of the Gridiron NSW Division 1 competition. Meanwhile, Nepean’s Colts team were also defeated by their local rivals 38-6.

BASEBALL: The Penrith Panthers first grade side lost to the Canterbury Vikings 9-7 in Round 4 of the NSW State Baseball League.

The Panthers will aim to bounce back when they take on Ryde in Round 5.

TOUCH FOOTBALL: Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies, has given her support to the Nepean Area Disabilities Organisation (NADO) Dragons Touch Football representative team, wishing them well for the upcoming Bundaberg Cup, off the back of securing financial support from the NSW Government to the tune of $2000.

“The financial assistance that I have been able to secure on behalf of NADO is in recognition of the significant benefits that will be derived for the overall health and wellbeing of these men and women who will be participating in the tournament,” Ms Davies said.

OPEN WATER SWIM: Following the huge success of the inaugural event in 2015, the 2nd Annual Nutrition Station Open Water Swim will be held next Saturday, October 22 at the Sydney International Regatta Centre.

Hosted by the Nepean Aquatic Centre Swim Club, the Open Water Swim offers both a Junior (10-13 years, 2.5km) and Open (over 12 years, 5km) event, with a total of $4500 in prize money to be won.

Online entries close at 9pm on Wednesday, October 19, with late entries open until 8.30am on the morning of the event.

016 wasn’t the year St Marys-based MMA cage fighter Arlene Blencowe had hoped for, but after all the trials and tribulations it could very well end on the sweetest of notes.

Next week the 33-year-old will travel to Memphis in the United States where she’ll enter the Bellator cage for the first time in a year.

In front of a capacity crowd inside FedEx Forum, Blencowe will be pitted against top Canadian fighter Julia Budd in a Featherweight bout for the ages.

The October 22 event will mark the first time Blencowe has fought professionally since her last Bellator fight, which resulted in a split decision win, last November.

Blencowe admitted 2016 hasn’t quite been the year she had anticipated.

“After debuting in Bellator last year and winning two out of my three fights as well as both my boxing fights, I had set up 2016 to be a really big year,” she told the Weekender.

“I spent all of January in the US training with Holly Holm, and I wanted this year to be a big year in the cage and the ring.
