YES! Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull wants same-sex marriage legal before Christmas after 61.6 per cent of Australians said a giant YES to marriage equality in the national postal survey. Despite being voluntary, almost 80 per cent of eligible Australians took part in the poll. For local couples like Richard Baler and Jarrod Glascott, it is a happy conclusion to what’s been a rough and at times vicious battle. Emily Newton reports on page 5.

SHAME ON L TURNBULL
TROY DODDS
indsay MP Emma Husar says she has never held citizenship of another country and has blasted Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull over what she says are “false rumours”. The rumours suggested Ms Husar may have been a citizen of Poland, ruling her ineligible to sit in the Parliament under Section 44. “I have never held citizenship of
another country,” Ms Husar said in a statement on Tuesday night. “Like my father, I was born in Nepean Hospital. I am and always will be a proud local. “Malcolm Turnbull and his cronies should be ashamed for spreading rumour and innuendo about my grandfather, who was born in Poland during Nazi occupation.” She said it was a “new low” from the Government. Pressure builds on State Government to reinstate Redfern stop on express trains EMILY NEWTON
urrently Megan Dunn, a Penrith commuter, can catch a train to Redfern where she works in under an hour. But when Transport NSW’s new commuter timetable comes into effect on November 26, she’s looking at a much longer commute as express trains on the Blue Mountains Line will no longer stop at Redfern. “They say it’s going to add five minutes, but it won’t,” she said. “I get to Redfern and then I have a 20 minute walk to work, but if I go to Central it’s a 45 minute walk.” Her other options including changing platforms at Central and walking through crowds to get another train back to Redfern, or catching a bus from the City which already have long lines and wait times. She can also catch a much slower suburban service, which are now expected to be even more crowded. Ms Dunn is “furious” as she expects at least half an hour will be added to her daily commute, completely changing her morning and evening routines. “It takes so much longer,” she said. “Everybody that gets on and off at
C
Megan Dunn is one of many local commuters frustrated with the timetable change and believes Penrith MP Stuart Ayres isn’t standing up for his constituents Redfern is now going to be getting on and off at Central. It’s just going to be over crowded.” As reported in last week’s Weekender, the changes to the timetable leave many commuters in Penrith and the Blue Mountains worse off.
While Western Line customers were promised additional services, it seems that the outer west only significantly benefits from additional weekend services. Transport for NSW claims the decision to remove Redfern has been based on Opal data, as most people travel to Central and
will experience faster commute times. But using the Transport NSW online trip planner, a commuter from Springwood to Central is set to save only two minutes, and it will actually take two minutes longer for Penrith commuters using the Blue Mountains Line for an express service to Central. Lindsay MP Emma Husar has spent mornings at local train stations and coffee events speaking with the community, and said commuters aren’t happy. “If the commuters are not getting the services they need, you’ve failed. Western Sydney has been failed again with this new timetable,” she said. She is calling on Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres to stand up for the local community, and has slammed the NSW Government for getting their priorities wrong as Kingswood Station is still without an elevator. “We’ve got commuters in the suburb next door who might have wheelchair accessibility issues, they might have children in prams and they can’t actually access the station, but the priority for this Government is to give Penrith Station a window dress,” Ms Husar said. Mr Ayres said timetables “will continue to be updated” as new Metro services are integrated into the network.

PROPOSAL TO UPGRADE MOBILE PHONE BASE STATION AT CRANEBROOK
1. I learned that the vast majority of us support somebody else’s right to love another person regardless of their sex. This whole postal survey has been an embarrassment for Australia, especially in regards to the cost, but in the end, it delivered a sensible result. 61.6 per cent of us need no convincing that in 2017, stopping a gay person from getting married is just plain ludicrous. Most of those people probably agree that it’s not really our business, either. Thankfully it’s now over and we can move towards the legislation being passed. 2. I learned that those awful reality shows have nothing on David W Kalisch when it comes to building suspense. As good as any ‘Australian Idol’ finale or ‘Bachelor’ rose ceremony, he certainly had us on the edge of our seats on Wednesday morning when delivering the results of the marriage equality survey on behalf of the ABS. Give him a job on commercial TV! 3. I learned that Andrew Constance may not be up to the job of Transport Minister in NSW. Not only is he overseeing the implementation of a new train timetable that delivers an awful result for western Sydney commuters, but now he’s authorised a Sydney Ferry to be called Ferry McFerryface. Yes, yes, very funny. Except it’s an old joke, with similar names suggested for modes of transport overseas in the last few years. Other new ferries have been named after prominent Australians, and rightly so. Naming this vessel Ferry McFerryface simply tarnishes the great honour those people have received.

4. Talking of that train timetable, I’m not sure Mr Constance or local MPs Stuart Ayres and Tanya Davies understand the barrage of complaints about to hit their offices. As the launch date for the new timetable draws closer, more people are realising that their commute to and from work is going to be longer and more difficult. Somebody needs to have the guts to step in and make some changes prior to the official implementation later this month. It’s just plain dumb and commuters will vent at the ballot box. 5. I learned that Kyle Sandilands is a bully who should focus on his own show rather than spend so much time on others. 2DayFM may be struggling in the ratings, but host Em Rusciano didn’t deserve the hit she copped on air from Kyle earlier this week. I still have absolutely no idea why people listen to his show – utter garbage!

6. Talking of radio, I learned that Macquarie Radio’s dismantling of the once great 2UE is almost complete, with the Talking Lifestyle format languishing at the bottom of the ratings and struggling to find an audience. It’s a shame, particularly for their breakfast team John and Garry who actually present a pretty entertaining program. 7. I learned Kristina Keneally is still haunted by the ghosts of the past, with much of the coverage surrounding her appointment as the candidate for Bennelong focused on her tarnished time as Premier in NSW. Personally I think she is a superb talent and an excellent choice. 8. I learned that Malcolm Turnbull’s leadership is hanging by a thread, even if the man himself doesn’t seem to think so. It is hard to imagine a scenario that will see Turnbull lead the Coalition to the next election. His government is in turmoil and his leadership is toxic. 9. I learned that ANZ Stadium can still provide an awesome atmosphere for sport, despite its many critics (and its ghost town feeling when NRL club games are played there). It was incredible to be part of the crowd for the Socceroos v Honduras match on Wednesday night. 10. I learned that Jelena Dokic is incredibly brave. She may be flogging her new book, but talking to the media – and hence the public – about her dark past and years of abuse is not easy for anyone, regardless of the end purpose. Hopefully she’s finding joy in the years that have followed her roller-coaster tennis career.

Locals declare love is the winner EMILY NEWTON
fter months of uncertainty, years of discussion and an at times vicious battle between the Yes and No camps, Australia has voted 61.6 per cent to 38.4 per cent in favour of supporting same-sex marriage. The figures, released by the ABS on Wednesday, show the majority of people are in favour of changing the law to allow same-sex couples to marry. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said he hopes same-sex marriage will be legal by Christmas. Local couple Jarrod Glascott and Richard Baler have been engaged since 2015, and are currently planning a wedding in Hawaii. “We got engaged well before all of this,” Mr Glascott told the Weekender before the results were released. “We’re committed to Hawaii but it puts a bit of a dampener on it when we go through the celebrant over there and we don’t really know what it will mean when we come back here. “We would have loved to get married in Australia and have all the family there.” While he is surrounded by supportive
A
family and friends, he knows that’s not the case for everyone. “A couple of times I’ve gone and looked at Facebook comments, but you just have to roll your eyes at some of the things that people say,” he said. “A lot of the negativity comes from a lack of knowledge, lack of awareness and people that don’t know someone that is affected by this issue.” Nearly eight out of every 10 eligible Australians (79.5 per cent) expressed their view in the voluntary postal survey. In Lindsay, 56.2 per cent of respondents said Yes to marriage equality while 43.8 per cent said No. 133 of the 150 Federal Electoral Divisions recorded a majority Yes response, and 17 of the 150 Federal Electoral Divisions recorded a majority No response. Mr Glascott said that it is disappointing that the postal vote had to happen in the first place. “It has been used as a political weapon,” he said. “It’s gotten to the point now where it’s embarrassing that the rest of the world has moved on from this issue and Australia has just harped on about it.” The ABS said more females participated in the survey than males.

The Government has been forced into several by-elections as a result of the dual citizenship issue, which has left Malcolm Turnbull’s grip on power teetering on the edge of collapse. Ms Husar said she undertook a range of checks to ensure she was allowed to sit in the Parliament. “The Labor Party has strong processes in place to ensure that all appropriate checks and balances are undertaken to avoid what we are seeing happen in the Liberal Party,” she said. “Mr Turnbull and the Liberal Party are
attempting to divert attention from the crisis of their own making by questioning the eligibility of several hard-working Labor Members of Parliament. “The Liberals are trying this on because of the sound of my last name and my heritage, not because they have any evidence to suggest I am a dual citizen.” Ms Husar said she has complied with all aspects of the Labor Party’s vetting procedures, including seeking legal advice and confirming her status with the Polish Embassy prior to nominating for Parliament. Ms Husar won the seat of Lindsay from Fiona Scott last year.

Fairfax axes Penrith Gazette
St Marys LAC bids farewell to popular commander EMILY NEWTON
n a surprise farewell, Superintendent Greg Peters has said an emotional goodbye to the St Marys Local Area Command. On Wednesday, St Marys Police officers and staff surprised him by forming a Guard of Honour at the front of the Police Station as the police piper played him off the premises and PolAir lingered in the sky. “I’ve been here since January 2014, and it’s been a great command to work at with great staff who are very supporting, who get out there and do their job supporting the whole community,” Superintendent Peters told the Weekender. “The way that the people here get out and do their job, day in day out whether they are short staffed or not, they do it and do it well. I don’t want to leave the staff here. I’m disappointed that I’m leaving them, but because of the merger, it’s not to be unfortunately.” With a police career spanning nearly 44 years, Superintendent Peters is on leave until he takes up his new position as commander of Quakers Hill Local Area Command on November 27 in anticipation of the merger between Penrith and St Marys LACs. Superintendent Peters is held in high

Superintendent Greg Peters walks through the Guard of Honour with his wife. Photo: Melinda Jane esteem by his work colleagues and is regarded as one of the most respected commanders in the New South Wales Police Force. He said the camaraderie of the St Marys Police Station was like nothing he had experienced before. “The senior management Christmas lunches that we put on where all the staff
come together is rare. I had never seen it before in Police Stations where the senior management serve the staff Christmas lunch,” he said. While this week he said goodbye to St Marys, he has been invited back to this year’s Christmas lunch he speaks so fondly of. “Thank you all,” he said.
Fairfax Media has pulled the curtain down on decades of history by confirming it will axe the Penrith City Gazette newspaper. The St Marys/Mt Druitt Star will also cease publication. Six newspapers overall will close down with publications in the Hills, Rouse Hill, Blacktown and Parramatta also gone. There will be 11 job losses across the mastheads as part of the proposal, it is understood. Formerly the Penrith City Star, Fairfax’s publication was once a strong force in Penrith but has struggled in recent years against more dominant titles. “The six newspapers affected by this proposal have done a good job serving their local communities,” John Angilley, Director of Australian Community Media, told employees in an email last Thursday. “But a detailed assessment of the longterm viability of these mastheads shows they are no longer commercially sustainable for us to operate.” The Gazette has been running out of a hot desk space in Penrith for the last few years. Despite the changing newspaper dynamic in Penrith, Western Weekender Managing Editor Troy Dodds said print remains strong in the region. “The key is a well resourced newsroom, original content and a passion for the area you represent. The Weekender has this in spades,” Mr Dodds said.

Forever a battle: Cathie fights hard EMILY NEWTON
lenmore Park’s Cathie Kirk feels blessed with the time she has. After a visit to a specialist in February 2015, Ms Kirk was originally misdiagnosed by a specialist with pancreatitis, but following the persistence of her GP she discovered five weeks later that she actually had Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. She hopes to prevent the same thing happening to anyone else. “There are no survivors in pancreatic cancer, it’s terminal,” she said. Following seven months of gruelling chemotherapy, Ms Kirk underwent Whipple surgery, removing her gallbladder and duodenum along with parts of her pancreas, liver and lymph nodes. After days in ICU, weeks in the hospital and months recuperating at home, today she consumes upwards of 50 tablets a day and monitors her health closely with monthly blood tests and regular scans as she continues to fight her diagnosis. “I was one of the lucky ones to have surgery but, for a lot of others with pancreatic cancer, it’s too late,” she said. “I’ve just celebrated two years since the surgery, and it will be three years in
G
February since I was diagnosed, which is amazing because a Stage 4 prognosis is 2.4 months. “Had I not responded well to chemo, I wouldn’t have been able to have that surgery.” Alongside her three daughters, she is encouraging people to be proactive in their own diagnosis as she faces an 80 per cent chance of her cancer returning. “You do not have to tick all the boxes to have pancreatic cancer. I did not have one risk factor, and almost no symptoms,” she said. “I wish I knew more before it happened to me, I wish someone had said to me that if you had an inflamed and enlarged pancreas, that could mean you might have pancreatic cancer.” It is estimated that 3,721 new cases of pancreatic cancer will be diagnosed in Australia this year, with only 7.7 per cent of patients reaching the five-year survival mark. While World Pancreatic Cancer Day was observed yesterday (Thursday, November 16), Ms Kirk is spending every day raising awareness about what is labelled the world’s toughest cancer. Read more about symptoms at www. worldpancreaticcancerday.org.

Police Snapshot COMPILED BY EMILY NEWTON
Penrith: Man doesn’t choose best place to relieve himself
A 31-year-old man from Kingswood will face Penrith Local Court next month after urinating on the police dock wall following his arrest. The man was at a hotel in High Street when he was asked to leave. It is alleged that as he was escorted out, he knocked over a stand and slammed doors. He was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station, and while there, he proceeded to urinate on the dock wall at the station. He was charged with ‘excluded person remain in vicinity of licensed premises’ and ‘malicious damage’.
Penrith: Man arrested after nudie run
Following a naked run through the local shopping centre on a dare, a man has been arrested for ‘wilful and obscene exposure’. The 19-year-old from Kingswood was at a pub near a local shopping centre with friends when it is alleged he entered a bet. He then streaked off his clothes, and ran naked through the nearby shops and surrounding streets. Police were called and he was arrested.
Penrith: Man charged with range of offences after assaults
Following multiple assaults through Penrith, a man has been arrested and charged with a slew of offences. At 4pm on Wednesday, November 8, a man attended a Government office on High Street and was disappointed in a conversation he had with staff. He then became abusive towards staff, causing security to intervene, with the incident captured on film by multiple electronic devices. The security then attempted to calm the man down, but he began jumping around and assaulting security causing minor injuries. The male then left and walked through
nearby shops to Riley Street where it is alleged he was involved in an altercation with random people. He kicked the door and elbowed their car causing minor damage and proceeded to assault the occupants by spitting on them. A bystander went to assist and attempt to calm the man down, but the man then kicked the bystander around the waist. Police attended, and found the man who then attempted to run away from them, beginning a brief foot pursuit. Officers were then involved in a violent arrest. The man was charged with three counts of ‘common assault’, ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’, ‘remain upon enclosed lands’, ‘affray’, ‘destroy property’ and ‘resist arrest’.
North St Marys: Police hunt trio who assaulted businessman
Police are urging anyone with information to come forward following an armed robbery at Appin Place, North St Marys earlier this week. About 5.00pm on Sunday, November 12, a 64-year-old male was locking up his business premises. It is alleged he was approached by three male persons, all described as 30-yearsold, 178cm tall and Aboriginal wearing black hooded jumpers and long black pants. Two of the men were also armed with machetes. One male has demanded cash and allegedly punched the owner to the face, causing him to fall down. While on the ground, all three males then kicked and punched the business owner while he was down. The business owner’s wallet was stolen, and then three men ran off as a motor vehicle drove past the location. The 64-year-old has sustained minor lacerations and bruises in the horrific incident. Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

It is going to be a busy few weeks for government It is going to be a busy few weeks for our nation’s law makers leading into the Christmas period. The Australian Bureau of Statistics released the result of the same-sex marriage plebiscite on Wednesday. The ‘yes’ vote prevailed, as many expected it would, and now the Turnbull Government must make a decision about how to enact the will of the people. Many suspect that the Turnbull government will allow a “conscience vote” on the matter, which would essentially mean that the members of the party could vote however they see fit on any legislation put to the Parliament to legalise same-sex marriage. It has been reported that Labor and the Greens have combined to prepare a Bill legalising marriage equality to be put before the Parliament before the end of the year. However, not only are there whispers coming out of Liberal Party of its conservative ranks hatching a plan to undermine the yes vote under the guise of “protecting religious freedoms”, in other words “homosexuals can get married, but just not in my house”, but the ongoing citizenship crisis enveloping the Parliament has reached boiling point. Federal Member for Bennelong, John Alexander, this week resigned from Parliament after revelations that he was a dual citizen. This means that technically the Government has lost is majority, and in a sense its ability to govern, as it will not
be able to pass legislation on its own without the support of either the ALP, the Greens or independent MPs. There are also question marks over a number of ALP MPs with the suggestion that a number of MPs from across the political spectrum will be referred to the High Court to determine whether or not they were validly elected. This is a critical point in time for our nation. Whilst it is largely expected that Barnaby Joyce will be returned to his seat of New England, no such certainty exists in relation to the inevitable Bennelong by-election. The ALP has announced its candidate, and it is none other than former Labor Premier Kristina Keneally. Like Maxine McKew before her, who ousted sitting Prime Minister John Howard from the seat of Bennelong in 2007, Keneally has star power and the political experience to back it up. The ALP will be licking its lips at the prospect of Keneally knocking off the incumbent John Alexander, who may be the first official casualty of a government that has been teetering on the edge of oblivion for some time now. It is an interesting state of affairs the country finds itself in from a legal perspective, in circumstances where the Constitution was drafted at a time when nations were regularly fighting over new territory and the need to ensure that Government MPs and Senators did not have an allegiance to another nation was far more important. And so, the circus continues.

Project driven by passion New cafe in Penrith aims to mirror success of The Grounds of Alexandria LAUREN SUTTIE
ocal foodie Phillip Hallani hopes to put Penrith on the map when his new restaurant venture, The Market Cafe, opens early next year. Mr Hallani’s dream, which is a decade in the making, is set to come alive in the heritage building located out the front of Nepean Village, which was most recently occupied by a Thai restaurant. “Destination-based, that’s my goal, to create a place where everyone from mothers meeting up to families and business meetings, it’s just a place where everyone can go,” he said. “We want to emphasise the point that it is a beautiful heritage building, we’re not touching anything on the outside, but we are really trying to work with the inside.” The Market Cafe will have a modern style dining space, which will serve a modern Australian menu with a twist as well as a private function space that will accommodate high teas and even engagement parties. “It will be a mix of healthy food and we are going to create a menu that is suitable for everyone, giving people options,” Mr Hallani said. The outside of the cafe will be trans-

Photo: Melinda Jane formed as well, with Mr Hallani already spending over $100,000 on the garden and landscaping. “We said if we’re going to do it, then we’re going to go broke trying,” he joked. Having always sought to learn off the best, when Mr Hallani decided to pursue his dream, reaching out to the owner of The Grounds of Alexandria, Ramzey Choker, was a no-brainer. For three weeks, Mr Hallani volunteered
working with Mr Choker on the pop-up project, The Grounds by the Sea, in order to get an insight into how one of the highest grossing cafes in Australia is run. “I would leave Penrith at 4.30am and I’d get back at 10.30 at night, three weeks straight, because when you want to do something really bad you’ll do anything,” Mr Hallani said. “My parents thought I was crazy, they’re like ‘you’re leaving a successful business
to go work for free for someone’ but, for me, learning off Ramzey, I would have paid him if he asked.” Mr Hallani said The Market Cafe will be on a different scale, creating a unique destination for people to visit in Penrith. “I’ve always told Ramzey that I wanted to create what he did for Alexandria in Penrith,” he said. “What I want to do that The Grounds have done is create a destination, I want people to be coming from Parramatta out to Penrith.” After having run his local family business, Hallani’s, for the last eight years, Mr Hallani is bringing across his parents’ strong values. If approval goes ahead, a shipping container will also be located in the back garden which will host a range of food pop-ups, where every dollar will go to charity. “Everything I have learned in the sense of giving back and doing good is from my parents and through the business,” he said. “We want to help other businesses as well, that’s a big part of what we are doing.” The renovations for the cafe are scheduled to start in December, with the restaurant doors set to open in mid-February.

Construction begins on $45 million project set to become a tourism drawcard EMILY NEWTON
world class zoo in Penrith’s backyard is one step closer, with construction on the $45 million Sydney Zoo officially beginning this week. The next stage in the highly anticipated zoo’s development follows a ground breaking ceremony at Western Sydney Parklands on Monday. Managing Director of Sydney Zoo, Jake Burgess, said the zoo could not succeed without their primary audience, the people of western Sydney. “I’m not aware of zoo development anywhere in the world that has started from scratch in a location as central as this,” he said. “We have more than 2.5 million people within 30 minutes drive of us, 75 per cent of the households in this region are families and 50 per cent of the population is under 25.” The zoo will work alongside Western Sydney University to provide excellence in wildlife conservation research while also working with Muru Mittigar to develop an integrated Aboriginal and natural heritage program. “Sydney Zoo embraces what we call the new zoo paradigm, we have a smaller

our care,” Mr Burgess said at the sod turning this week. “Our construction timelines should see us complete at the end of 2018 and once
we are happy that our animals are settled, and our operations are working smoothly, we will open to the public.” Located near the centre of the Sydney basin, Sydney Zoo expects to attract between 750,000 and one million people annually. Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres spoke about the benefits of Sydney Zoo, bringing with it millions of dollars to the NSW economy. “The opportunity to create a zoo over 16.5 hectares here in Western Sydney Parklands with over 30 individual exhibits with no stairs but elevated walkways, it’s probably the most accessible zoo in the world,” he said. Sydney Zoo will be divided into the four education precincts of Australian Animals, African Highlands, African Grasslands and South East Asian Tropical, bringing a diverse range of both exotic and Australian native animals to the modern zoo. 160 jobs are expected to be created during construction, with at least 120 jobs during operation. Older tradies are valued Businesses are turning to more experienced workers to fill employment gaps EMILY NEWTON
alling all older trades people, local businesses are looking for you! With a surge of development and growth across western Sydney, there are plenty of construction jobs around for the strong and able. However Lea Hicks, General Manager of HIX Group in Penrith, said local businesses are struggling to fill their positions with local workers. “It’s a bit frustrating because we’ve got the Government saying they’re creating jobs in western Sydney but we’ve been advertising jobs for months, as many other people are, and we just can’t get people,” she said. “We’ve had a job we’ve been advertising for more than three months now.” While still one of Penrith’s most common occupations, trade workers are getting harder to come by, as ‘Technicians and Trades Workers’ dropped from 15.2 per cent of employed people in the LGA according to 2011 Census data to 14.8 per cent in 2016. Mrs Hicks is letting older tradies know that their lifetime of experience is valuable. “We’re looking for older tradies that
C
might not want to climb through roofs anymore,” she laughed. With good money in Government contracts, Mrs Hicks believes that many tradespeople follow construction jobs around rather than settle for work at a particular company. But the older you are, the harder it can be for a tradie to compete with the physically demanding nature of the job. HIX Group are making sure older tradies know that a change of pace is within reach as older workers bring to the table unparalleled skills and the ability to help mentor and train younger workers. “We’re a locally-owned family business, we’ve been in business 25 years this year,” Mrs Hicks said. “We know that there are a lot of other businesses in the area too that want local people. We want to let local people know that there are jobs out there for them.” After advertising positions through Government employment services over several months, they’ve received only one referral. Having seen a declining interest in trades as more people go to university, Mrs Hicks believes the Government needs to step up and help mature workers transition from site jobs to other areas of the trade industry.

New timetable a shocker I’m totally unimpressed with the new train timetable (Commuters see red, Weekender November 10). I travel from Werrington to Town Hall within a one hour window each morning and night. No real changes to morning commute but two extra stops added to express train. Evening trains reduced from four express services to three. For all the promotion by Sydney Trains, I’m worse off. DAVID BREWIN, VIA FACEBOOK
Timetable a big let down This is frustrating. I drop my child off at childcare and need to be at the station 10 minutes after daycare opens in order to ensure I get from Penrith to Green Square by my start time. Currently I have the option of catching a later train, which means I can get off at Redfern and walk the distance and still make it to work on time. If I swap at Central to go to Green Square, the wait for that train means I would be 15 minutes late. This was not well thought out, I wonder what area on the train network TRULY benefits. What a joke! I catch these trains to Redfern from Penrith and back again and can assure you hundreds of commuters
a day use this service to Redfern. Why should Central be prioritised over Redfern? Doesn’t make sense as it adds about one minute to the trip, yet without stopping it adds a minimum 10 minutes if not more to those wishing to get off at Redfern. Not to mention the Mountains trains that do Redfern/Penrith only come every 30 minutes while the Central/ Penrith comes every 15 minutes in peak. JOSH ROBERTS, VIA FACEBOOK
No sympathy for outgoing Panthers skipper Good riddance (Editor’s Desk, Weekender November 10). You don’t run the club, you are merely an employee. You signed a long extension to an existing contract and you should honour that. But because you don’t like someone you have a dummy spit and want out. I’m looking forward to having James Maloney here for the next few years. CRAIG LANGSFORD, VIA FACEBOOK
Good luck Moyza Agree completely. I hope he does well at the Sharks as Luke Lewis also has. A highly paid person who doesn’t put in the hard yards is always a problem in any work environment. TROY GREEN, VIA FACEBOOK

enrith’s newest women’s shelter is on track to be open by the end of the year, as local businesses come together to raise almost $20,000 in much-needed funds. The Haven – Nepean Women’s Shelter is a community funded shelter that supports women and children with crisis accommodation and complementary services. Last week, the Nepean Business
Network held a Melbourne Cup breakfast to raise money for their running costs. “It was $18,611 and then the Bank of Queensland threw in another $1,000,” The Haven’s Chair of the Board, Sharon Levy said. “It was amazing, there was so much love, support and generosity in the room.” On top of funds raised, the breakfast saw many businesses putting their hands up to help out in any way they can. “The generosity from the Penrith region was astounding,” Ms Levy said.

s Sydney house prices become less affordable and more people call the western suburbs home, Labor is calling for a fairer, more stable rental market. NSW Labor has promised that if elected in 2019, it would remove the ‘no grounds’ provisions that allows landlords to evict tenants without giving a reason. Member for Londonderry, Prue Car and Labor Candidate for Penrith, Karen McKeown were joined by the Shadow Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation, Yasmin Catley to call for a fair set of rules around grounds for evictions. “Removing the ability for an unscrupulous landlord to evict a tenant will help
ensure renters have the confidence to stand up for their rights,” Ms Catley said. “People shouldn’t be scared to report a broken window or a leaking tap just in case the landlord decides to turf them.” Under current laws in NSW, a landlord can evict a tenant without grounds with just 30 days notice at the end of a fixed term lease, or 90 days during a periodic tenancy. Labor said it will work with landlords, tenants and industry stakeholders to find a fair solution and provide tenants with peace of mind. “Almost a third of people in our community live in rental accommodation,” Ms Car said. “The Government should set rules which recognise the rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants.”

Fury over mobile tower proposal LAUREN SUTTIE
he proposal for a mobile base station on Andromeda Drive in Cranebrook has local residents concerned as the network facility is set to be built on a popular sporting field. This is the second time that the proposal has been put forward, as Telstra attempted to have it installed in 2013 but, due to a lack of funding, construction did not go ahead. Now that the project has received funding, Telstra are planing to install the telecommunications facility next year. Local resident Cassandra Ferguson is frustrated Telstra are trying to install it again. “I just find it frustrating that they would think that we would be happy to have it now when we weren’t happy to have it before,” she said. “I understand that Telstra wants the area to have good mobile coverage but surely they could put it in a place where there is not so many kids playing and not so many homes surrounding it.” If it goes ahead, the mobile base station will be installed on an existing flood light pole in the field, which currently stands next to spectator seating.
T
The fields are frequently used by local soccer and cricket clubs, and the playground and courts are also regularly used by kids in the area. Residents living near the field received a letter from Telstra on November 9, which outlined that Penrith Council approval was not needed for the station to go ahead. Council confirmed to the Weekender that most telecommunications facilities are exempt from local approval requirements under the 1997 Telecommunications Act. While Telstra are free to install the station, it is still consulting with residents who have been invited to submit their thoughts on the plans until November 28. Ms Ferguson, who has started an online petition, said children’s health is more important than mobile phone reception. “I’m just really concerned about the health effects that it might have,” she said. “Some people have the argument that your mobile phone is actually worse than a tower, but my personal opinion is that we already have mobile phones and microwaves in our homes and adding a tower to the area just adds to your exposure.” A Telstra spokesperson said that Telstra had already established an agreement with Council back in 2013 to have the station installed.

Asbestos Awareness month is a chance to get educated Would you know asbestos if you saw it? Do you know how to safely remove asbestos materials from your home? November is National Asbestos Awareness month, so it’s a great time to find out more. While asbestos is no longer used in Australian building materials, many houses built or renovated before the mid-1980s still contain asbestos. Council supports this awareness initiative as the safety of everyone in our city is a top priority. We are calling on residents to learn about the dangers of asbestos, to know what to look for in your home and, most importantly, how to dispose of any asbestos-containing material. You may be surprised to find that asbestos has been used in the manufacture of a broad range of products including carpets, linoleum and vinyl tiles, behind wall and floor tiles, in
cement floors, internal and external walls, ceilings and ceiling space (insulation), eaves, garages, roofs, around hot water pipes, fences, extensions to homes, garages, outdoor toilets, backyard and farm structures, chook sheds and even dog kennels. Most people can’t tell whether certain building materials contain asbestos just by looking at it. Most exposure to asbestos has been linked to DIY renovating. While left untouched, these materials are perfectly safe to be around, but if you plan to renovate, please take safety precautions and follow regulations. To learn more, visit asbestosawareness.com.au or speak to Council’s Environmental Health and Compliance team on 4732 8055. Have a great weekend, and I’ll see you in next week’s paper!

Charities get chance to showcase amazing work via special Panthers initiative LAUREN SUTTIE
f you’re wondering why Penrith Panthers Leagues Club has 10 Christmas trees in its foyer, it’s not because their visual merchandiser got over-excited about Christmas! Panthers is once again hosting the community-based initiative Trees of Hope, which supports local charities and organisations through a Christmas tree decorating competition. 10 charities, which include the Blue Datto Foundation, Nepean Therapy Dogs Incorporated and Regentville Rural Fire Brigade, were invited to Panthers this week to decorate a tree in a way that best reflects their cause. Penrith Panthers Marketing Operations Coordinator, Melissa Valentic, said that it’s a difficult task to only choose a small number of worthy charities every year. “For 2017, we based our choices to cover a well rounded and grassroots approach to our community,” she said. “We tried to cover areas of need in our district including disability, emergency services, health, education, youth and wellbeing, homeless and disadvantaged, arts and culture and more.” The trees will take pride of place in

the foyer for eight weeks, in which time members of the public are invited to come and vote for their favourite tree. “During this time we host approximately 25,000 visitors and members in our club per week and, by showcasing Trees of Hope, we aim to give charities the ability to promote themselves and their outstanding work to gain community recognition and support their cause,” Ms Valentic said. This is the first year that the Blue Datto Foundation will be participating in the competition. “We believe the Trees of Hope event is a brilliant way to demonstrate all the hard work and passion behind local charities, who all have a common goal, to better the community in one way or another,” spokesperson Katelyn Saliba said. As well as decorating their tree with a blue theme, the Blue Datto Foundation also added a special touch to their tree. “We thought the tree would be a beautiful way to honour the local youth who have lost their lives in road crashes and to give their families a voice,” Ms Saliba told the Weekender. “To do this, we are displaying their photos and a message from their families on the Christmas Tree of Hope.” There are three prizes to be won this year, with the Favourite Members, Direc-

Sexting danger on the rise Parents urged to be more involved in educating their kids about online safety LAUREN SUTTIE
ith sexting and image-based abuse incidents on the rise, it’s more important than ever for parents and carers to take an active interest in their children’s online activities. New research from the Office of the eSafety Commissioner has found that one in four Australian teenagers, aged between 14 and 17, have experienced sexting or revenge porn in the past year. Alarmingly, there have been reports that kids as young as 11 are putting themselves in danger by sharing nude or semi nude photos of themselves online, often to people they don’t know. Head Educator of Life Education NSW, Lisa Woodward, said young people often don’t understand the repercussions of what they are sharing online. “Young people need to be educated about the long-term implications of their online activity,” she said. “But research shows that parents have an important role to play in keeping their kids safe online, and are a main source of advice and support when children are experiencing problems online.” As part of their bCyberwise campaign, Life Education NSW has also been travel-
W
ling to schools around Penrith, with students from Orchard Hills Public School recently receiving a visit. Principal of Orchard Hills Public School, Fran Campbell, believes that it is vital for parents to also become involved in the education process around cybersafety. “Having parents informed and up-todate in the use of social media, while supporting their children with safe and respectful online behaviour, can only help in the overall protection of our children,” she said. “Education in cybersafety also enables parents and schools to work in partnership when protecting young people and teaching appropriate digital citizenship.” To help parents and carers better understand the risks their children face online, Life Education NSW is holding an information night for parents on November 22. Topics that will be covered throughout the night include cyber bullying, online stranger danger, photo sharing and image-based abuse, accessing inappropriate content, sharing personal information online, balancing time online, and safe and respectful online behaviour. The information night will run from 6pm at the Life Education NSW centre, located in Colyton. Register your attendance online at lenswcyber.eventbrite.com.au.

Inspiring others to get fit Fitness challenge has encouraged locals to lose weight and feel more confident PATRICK BRISCHETTO
ederal Member for Lindsay Emma Husar and local radio personality Wayne ‘Willmo’ Willmington have been getting active for their own good. And they want you to join them. “One of the aims of the whole challenge and why we went public with it was because Lindsay is very much an obese area, so we wanted to try and inspire people,” said Mr Willmington, owner and presenter on Vintage FM. “I know so many different people in my chain of friends that have actually sent me messages saying ‘you’ve inspired us to make a change in our life’.” Ms Husar took up the challenge Mr Willmington set to his friends in August, which encouraged those in his network to set their own fitness goals. She has been training regularly to recuperate from a serious knee injury suffered last year and she said that with her busy lifestyle, having someone to challenge kept her going. “We’re very competitive, so it was about challenging each other to stay on track,” Ms Husar said. “Sometimes I didn’t want to have to get up and do it but then I thought, ‘oh no

Overall, both agree that it’s a small sacrifice to make. “Just spend 30 minutes to do something to keep fit, that’s all it takes,” Mr Willmington said “That investment in yourself pays dividends not just to you but your family and your community,” Ms Husar added.

tudents of James Erskine Public School are crossing the road safely as they benefit from the installation of new safety infrastructure. Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies was joined by Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey, to show how the improvements to pedestrian infrastructure around schools in the region would make it safer for kids walking in the area. Ms Davies was pleased Mulgoa had
benefited from the Government’s investment to provide important infrastructure to protect local students. “Improvements at the school include fencing and kerb extensions around the pedestrian crossing,” Ms Davies said. “It’s also still vitally important to remember that we all need to play our part in keeping pedestrians safe.” The number of pedestrian deaths in NSW so far this year stands at 41, which is 12 less than the same time last year. Since 2013, no child pedestrian has died in an operational school zone in NSW.

urses from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Nepean Hospital will take to the footpath tonight (Friday) to mark World Prematurity Day. The purple themed walk, which is in its second year, aims to raise money and awareness for premature babies. One of the nurses organising this year’s walk, Emily Hinder, said that while it’s a hard time for those families going

through a premature birth, it is also a huge achievement for those babies. “You see them struggle and then you see them get better and be able to go home with their families,” she said. Last year’s walk raised about $1,600 and while it might not seem like much, Ms Hinder said it helped to buy wraps and other developmental care support. “The wraps make a very big difference to the babies,” she said. People wishing to participate in tonight’s walk at Tench Reserve at 6pm are encouraged to bring purple lanterns.

Our recipes have been passed down through generations, blending the spices of our ancestors in Angola and the traditional charcoal techniques from Portugal. Opened in 1992, in the heart of the Portuguese capital of Sydney (Petersham), the Fernandes family continue to own and operate their restaurants with the same pride and passion for food. Our Portuguese Chicken Burger has featured in Sydney’s top 10 best burgers and our Charcoal Chicken is a regular feature in the SMH Good Food Guide, Daily Telegraph and Food Safari – but that’s not what makes us so special, it’s our dedication to great food.

BUSINESS Re Releasing the power of diversity po
How should we show gratitude?

A
re you China ready? India ready? Are you well positioned to take advantage of the opportunities that operating within a global marketplace offers? Do you know how to maximise the benefits of having culturally diverse colleagues? It’s true that cultural diversity presents opportunities. Different thinking and problem solving skills, team dynamism, links to contacts and opportunities overseas, a potentially more inclusive organisational culture and more healthy working relationships based on openness, respect and empathy, to name a few. All of these will impact on the bottom line. But cultural diversity is only beneficial if you know how to work effectively with people who are culturally different. Here we’re not only talking about ethnicity but gender, age, sexual orientation as well. The heart of the issue is this: how do we exploit difference in positive ways for the benefit of our businesses and our own personal development?
How do we create culturally intelligent organisations? There are four aspects to cultural intelligence. First it’s about Drive, having the interest and confidence to adapt to multicultural situations. Second is Knowledge, having an understanding about how cultures are similar and different. The third key skill is Strategy, the awareness and ability to plan for multicultural interactions. The final skill is Action, the ability to adapt and modify behaviour when relating and working interculturally. The good news is that anyone can develop these capabilities. Individuals and organisations can become culturally intelligent. It makes good business sense and in an age of mass migration and displacement of 50 million people around the world, it makes moral sense as well. What are you doing to take advantage of the opportunities cultural diversity offers? See you next week.
Coming up to the holiday season, our thoughts turn to the gifts we need to buy. But what about our clients, referral partners and employees? How do we show them gratitude? It doesn’t have to cost a lot! If you look back on some of the best gifts you’ve received, chances are some will not be lavish gifts, but rather something that came from the heart, and made you feel special. Just because we have a small budget, it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t bother. Showing gratitude – good karma? Regardless of whether or not you believe in, or see a positive shift in your karma, displaying gratitude is shown to improve your mood and those of others around you. Support local Before buying something overseas or through a chain, can you support another small business? They will appreciate it, it encourages small businesses to support each other, and keeps it local. If you have a great experience, give a shout out to the business within a local group, or place a review on their social media or other
digital channel. If you have a bad experience, say something to management so they can resolve it. Treat others as you wish to be treated yourself. Christmas/Seasons Greetings cards People switched from actual cards to emails, to nothing in many cases. Therefore you have a massive opportunity to stand out by sending a physical card. You can get personalised cards printed for your business for a fairly minimal cost. If you want to spend the money helping out a charity instead, then remember to send the email mentioning the donation and consider sending a video e-card for greater impact. Positive reinforcement Some people just love to hear positive feedback, and a word of thanks. So a simple note by email or text, or a call, may be enough for someone to feel special. Referral or rewards programs If someone has given you a lot of word of mouth referral work, then decide how you can capitalise on it. Is it worthwhile starting a rewards program? It’s certainly something to think about.

Legends on stage together
I
KATE REID
t’s not often you get the chance to spend one amazing night with some of the biggest names in Aussie music. But that’s what’s on offer when the One Night Stand concert takes over the Evan Theatre this December. Russell Morris, Mental As Anything, Daryl Braithwaite and The Badloves will come together for this mini festival right here in our own backyard. Frontman for Mental As Anything Greedy Smith says he’s looking forward to enjoying the music of his contemporaries just as much as the fans are. “I think musically the most satisfying thing is getting together and to use an expression from the beatnix era ‘it’s good to dig their sounds, man’,” he laughed. Of course the chance to share the stage for a night also brings offstage perks as well. “It’s great because Daryl and Russell have got some good stories, so we get lots of good backstage banter too,” he said. Though they’ve been around for 40 years – and are still most commonly associated with their mega hit ‘Live It Up’ – Mental As Anything are one of those rare 70s/80s bands that have continued to produce new music. Their latest release is a five track EP
aptly titled ‘Mental as Anything – 5 Track EP’. This love for crafting the perfect tune has been with Greedy since his early days in music. “I got into all of this through songwriting,” he said. “I don’t think I would have been in Mental As Anything that long if I hadn’t come up with songs that were hits for the band.” The EP was a labour of love for Greedy and fellow songwriter and bandmate Martin Plaza, who isn’t touring with Mental As Anything at the moment due to his current battle with cancer. “Hopefully we can still record together next year,” Greedy said. With new and old hits to play Greedy is clearly keen to get back on tour and perform for his fans both young and old. While that sense of fun hasn’t waned, there has been one slight change to his routine. “I don’t drink whisky on stage anymore,” Greedy laughed. “After 7000 shows it’s a bit more tea these days than whisky.” One Night Stand featuring Russell Morris, Mental As Anything, Daryl Braithwaite and The Badloves will be on at the Evan Theatre on Saturday, December 9 at 7.50pm. Tickets start at $87.10. To purchase tickets, visit www. penrith.panthers.com.au or call 1300 PANTHERS.

et your flares on and prepare for an ABBA-solutely amazing evening when ‘ABBA-solutely Fabulous!’ returns to western Sydney. Entertainer Rhonda Burchmore will once again join creative forces with her friend and fellow entertainer Lara Mulcahy for this high-energy production that pays tribute to one of pop music’s biggest exports. The show, which premiered earlier this year, sees Lara and Rhonda sharing the stage once again after starring in the hit production ‘Mamma Mia!’ in the early 2000s. “Over those two and a half years together Lara and I became best friends and we’ve remained best friends,” Rhonda said. “It’s a really lovely chemistry that you don’t always find, and I think that will come out musically.”

Ê Channel Ten unveiled their new shows for 2018 last week with a few surprises thrown in. Returning to Ten next year is ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’, ‘MasterChef Australia’, ‘Gogglebox’, ‘Have You Been Paying Attention?’, ‘Shark Tank’, ‘Family Feud’ and ‘The Project’. ‘The Bachelor’ and ‘The Bachelorette’ will also return as well as the already announced ‘Bachelor in Paradise’, which will feature some familiar faces including Apollo Jackson, Keira McGuire, Laurina Fleure, Tara Pavlovic and Michael Turnbull from previous seasons. After some whispers it wouldn’t return, it’s been confirmed ‘Australian Survivor’ is back next year albeit with a twist attached. The new season of ‘Australian Survivor’ will be known as ‘Champions vs Contenders’. It will see champions from fields such as sport, entertainment and all walks of public life take on everyday Aussies in the ultimate game of survival.
BACHELOR IN PARADISE COMING SOON CHANNEL TEN
Ê Some brand new shows heading to Ten next year include a new dating series hosted by comedian Julia Morris called ‘Blind Date’; Glenn Robbins will make a TV comeback in a new season of ‘Russell Coight’s All Aussie Adventures’; and ‘Playing For Keeps’ is a new series about the women behind the men we barrack for on the footy field. Also coming to Ten is a new comedy titled ‘Street Smart’, which stars Tahir Bilgic and Rob Shehadie (‘Habibs’). ‘Street Smart’ features a gang of astonishingly inept criminals who fancy themselves as the next Ocean’s Eleven.
Lawson will feature on the latest series. The mega chefs will guest star on the hit cooking series that will celebrate its 10th season. Amazing!

Ê She’s the hot favourite to host Australia’s version of ‘Love Island’ but former Bachelorette Sophie Monk isn’t so sure. Speaking to Huffington Post recently, Monk said she’d be keen to do a fun travel show with her best friend and producer Oscar Gordon but wasn’t so sure about hosting ‘Love Island’. “I don’t know… there’s a few shows people have asked me to do,” Monk said. “I have not signed on to anything.” No doubt after her huge success recently on the hit Ten reality show, Monk will be back on TV very soon.
Ê Channel Seven have announced their hosts for ‘Australian Spartan’, with Edwina Bartholomew and Hamish McLachlan fronting the new series. The series, which has been described by many as ‘Ninja Warrior’ with a twist, will begin filming in Brisbane next month.

BOOK The Passage of Love Alex Miller
One of Australia’s most acclaimed writers is back with a new and very personal novel that explores the intersection between love and creativity. In The Passage of Love readers are introduced to an old man, who is sitting on a bench in a New York park, holding a book, and looking back on his life as a writer. As he picks up a pen and starts at the beginning of his story we are transported back to when Robert Croft was just 21-years-old. After leaving far north Queensland to follow his dreams, he finds himself living in Melbourne and almost destitute. There he starts to understand that writing may just save him, while also being painfully aware of the obstacles on his road to success. After meeting Lena Soren, a beautiful, educated and wealthy woman, he finds his life taking a turn that he never could have expected. The lives of this husband and wife are laid bare as they both struggle with their individual creativity. The Passage of Love has been warmly received with readers on review site Goodreads awarding the novel four stars out of five. Alex Miller has gained much praise for his work, which has earned him two Miles Franklin awards, the Commonwealth Writers Prize and numerous other literary awards. Grab your copy now!
War for the Planet of the Apes Rated M
We’ve had ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ and ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ and now it’s time for the battle to end all battles with the release of ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’. CINEMA Justice League Rated M
Batman, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and Superman. You’ve seen some of them on their own but now get ready to see them on the big screen working together and combining their powers to try and stop something with a potentially greater power than the metahumans combined. Even though Bruce Wayne/Batman (Ben Affleck) and Diana Prince/ Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) take charge, they can’t fight this enemy on their own. They need to assemble a group of heroes with different abilities and powers to face an assault that could have dire consequences for the world as we know it.
The other heroes are played by, Ezra Miller as The Flash, ‘Game of Thrones’ star Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Victor Stone/ Cyborg and of course Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman. Also starring in non-hero roles are Amy Adams, Jeremy Irons and Jesse Eisenberg. With direction from Zack Snyder – who directed ‘300’, ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘Batman v Superman’ – viewers are sure to be in for a thrilling ride from minute one. Be sure to catch ‘Justice League’ on the big screen! ‘Justice League’ is currently screening at Hoyts Penrith. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.hoyts.com.au.
MUSIC Kelsea Ballerini Unapologetically
Kelsea Ballerini’s entrance onto the country music stage was an impressive one. Her 2015 debut album, ‘The First Time’, saw her first three singles hit number one – a feat never achieved by any other female in US country music history. Now she’s making her much-anticipated
return with her sophomore release ‘Unapologetically’. With her own big shoes to fill there’s no doubt a lot of pressure with this album, but ‘Unapologetically’ is likely to be just one more positive step in what has so far been a remarkable artistic story.

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
your horoscopes
With dynamic Mars charging through your relationship zone (until December 9) you’re impatient to sort out a partnership problem ASAP. But Venus and Pluto encourage you to adopt a more strategic and subtle style. A softly-softly approach will help you sail through any potential dramas with unusual ease. Adventure, travel and/or stimulating company will keep you happily occupied and entertained on the weekend.
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
This week Venus boosts romantic prospects and business matters. And you’ll find the more creatively you communicate with family members, the more satisfying the week will be. Attached Taurus – it’s a wonderful week to be more patient and passionate with your partner. Sick of being single? Don’t accept second best. Have the confidence and stamina to wait for your soul mate.
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
Joanne Madeline Moore Daily posts at www.bohoastro.com twitter @JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2017
Geminis are the eternal students of the zodiac – your active mind longs for constant stimulation and regular information updates. And your restless nature is drawn to travel, where you can soak up new experiences, languages, lifestyles and cultures. This week is a terrific time to network like a pro and make the most of your international contacts, as Mercury links up with adventurous and unpredictable Uranus.
CANCER
JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
You’ll be drawn to enjoyable hobbies, obsessions, people and places. A new friendship could flourish or a burgeoning romance could progress to a deeper level. So expect a busy week full of emotionally intense conversations. A flash of inspiration is likely on the weekend. But it will take plenty of energy/patience to bring it to fruition. As Richard Branson said: “You don’t learn to walk by following rules”.
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
This week (in the words of Madonna) it’s time to “express yourself!” Cat creativity is high, as the Sun stimulates your colourful imagination. Leos love putting on a spectacular show and, with Venus visiting your domestic zone, it’s also a wonderful week to play Domestic Goddess (or Master Chef) and entertain family and friends at home. You’re feeling positive and are keen to impress others, as you focus on big dreams and grand schemes.
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
The weekly stars highlight study, short trips, family functions, community connections and stimulating conversations. So it’s the perfect time for versatile Virgos to post, talk, text and tweet up a storm. There’s certainly much enjoyment and satisfaction to be gained from contributing your specific talents to your local community. The weekend is fabulous for fraternising with friends!
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Librans appreciate quality and adore living in the lap of luxury, but don’t overdo it or you’ll end up being the most beautiful bankrupt on the block. When it comes to shopping and spending, your biggest challenge is to learn to say ‘no’. On Tuesday, powerful Pluto encourages you to dig deep and be true to who you really are. Be inspired by Goldie Hawn: “I want to dig deep and ask – Who am I? What do I have to offer? What do I have to learn?”
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
This week you have the power to persuade others over to your point-ofview with your boosted charm and sex appeal. Don’t overdo it though, strive to be powerfully persuasive, rather than compulsively controlling. When it comes to a close relationship, do your best to be generous rather than jealous; and passionate rather than possessive. Enjoy luxuriating in the natural world.

SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Avoid being a Sagittarian smart-aleck. When it comes to a problem, things are more complex than they appear and it will take time to get to the bottom of the current situation. The Sun shifts into your sign (on Wednesday) which boosts your Prima Dona tendencies. So strive to be creative and confident – rather than bossy and overbearing. The weekend favours fermenting ideas, but don’t be all talk and no action.
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Don’t let minor matters get to you this week. No one wants to be around a grumpy Goat! Plus aim to be more proactive, especially when it comes to a work matter. Instead of brooding when other people don’t automatically understand what you want, tell them exactly what you need. And learn to delegate. No one is indispensable. Old solutions won’t work on the weekend.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Your boredom threshold is set on low this week, and you don’t have the patience to put up with tedious people. So strive to extricate yourself from such situations in a tactful way. Communication and conversation are the buzz words on the weekend when the pace picks up and you share opinions, learn a new skill or pass on some exciting information. Whatever you choose to do, it’s a good time to give your brain cells a thorough workout!
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Have you been feeling stuck in a rut? Mighty Mars (moving through your public spotlight zone) encourages you to shake up your reputation, take a calculated risk and reach for the stars. If you are involved with a group, club or organisation, be inclusive and make sure everyone gets the chance to have their say. The weekend stars encourage you to bite the bullet and make an innovative and exciting decision.

Getting your nutritional needs if you’re not eating meat If you’ve decided to stop eating meat, you can still get all your nutritional needs. However, you need to be aware of what those needs are...
Kate Reid Nutritionist kate.reid@ westernweekender.com.au @kate_reid6
There’s no doubt that vegetarian (no meat) and vegan (no meat and no animal products including dairy, eggs etc) diets have seen a rise in popularity in recent years. Whether it’s for health, ethical or environmental reasons, more and more people are giving up meat and animal products. While a balanced plant-based diet can offer many health benefits, it’s important to understand how to tailor a vegetarian or vegan diet to ensure you’re still getting the nutrients your body needs. While vegetarians and vegans often get asked ‘where do you get your protein?’ there’s actually plenty of plant-based alternatives to choose from, including legumes, nuts, wholegrains and tofu. If you’re vegetarian you can add eggs and dairy into the mix as well. Iron is another nutrient that needs to be considered when changing to a vegetarian or vegan diet. While iron can be found in plant foods in the form of non-haem iron, it is not
absorbed as well as haem iron which is found in meat. To get the best out of iron rich plant foods, like legumes, tofu, wholegrains and green leafy vegetables, consume them alongside foods that are high in vitamin C – which aids in iron absorption. If you don’t consume dairy regularly, you can get your calcium from foods like fortified soymilk, leafy green vegetables and legumes. These do tend to have less calcium than cows’ milk etc, so make sure you’re eating enough to get your recommended daily intake of calcium. Zinc is another important nutrient that can be lacking in vegetarian/vegan
diets. Plant sources of zinc include nuts, legumes, tofu and wholegrain products. Those who follow a vegan diet need to be especially aware of Vitamin B12 as it is only found in animal products. Aim to consume foods that are fortified with Vitamin B12 and for those that are not meeting the requirements supplementation may be required. Lastly, it’s important to see your GP for regular blood tests so any deficiencies – especially Vitamin B12 – can be picked up and addressed. For more information on meeting nutritional needs while on a vegetarian or vegan diet, it’s best to speak to an accredited practicing dietitian.

JOHN ROZENTALS
I
t’s with deep sadness and a genuine sense of personal loss that I write of the sudden death last Sunday of Wayne Stehbens, aged just 62 yet winemaker at Coonawarra’s Katnook Estate for 38 years. I studied winemaking at college with Wayne and just a couple of years ago visited him in Coonawarra, a place he loved nearly as much as he did his family. He greeted me with open arms and was indeed a generous host who introduced me to many local winemakers and set up reintroductions to a few I had previously met. He also plied me with much good red wine he had produced and showed great pride in having reinvigorated the Katnook cellars, where the Coona-
warra wine story had been started by John Riddoch well over 100 years ago. Wayne saw himself as one of the custodians of the area’s history, though he certainly didn’t take much due credit for its preservation. He also added considerable lustre to Coonawarra’s reputation, including a couple of revered Jimmy Watson Trophies from the Melbourne Wine Show. To me — and I’m sure to many others — Wayne seemed indestructible. Like the many fine reds he produced he was going to keep going for many more years. My thoughts right now are with his wife Michelle and family. Vale Wayne Stehbens. You were a good one.

Financial planning in general focuses on the long-term and most of our strategies are developed to produce outcomes well into the future. What is often forgotten is the here and now! It is really important to focus on living an enjoyable life on an ongoing basis as well as ensuring a bright future. Furthermore, by not planning the shortterm goals, we can make financial decisions that negatively impact our future as well as hinder the present and we lose twice. Seemingly counter-intuitively, focussing on the ongoing lifestyle you would like to live and planning accordingly is an excellent way to also set up your longterm goals. Identifying the things most important to you on a daily, weekly and monthly basis and allocating money and time to these can lead to you reducing spending on things that add little or no value to your life. This will allow you to release funds that can be used for longer term goals. At Future Financial Services we have a tool that we call the “Good month

matrix” that helps our clients to develop a structure for their spending. The matrix asks the clients to identify three to five things they like to do every day, every week and once or twice a month. These activities can be big or small; if it is important to the client it is important. If the client gets satisfaction from the activity it is time and money well spent. The theory being that if you are doing the things most important to you on a daily, weekly and monthly basis; it is likely that you are having a pretty good life. Furthermore it is likely that most clients will realise that they are spending money on things completely unrelated to the activities they have identified that they value most. In many cases this will provide an opportunity to adjust their
ongoing spending and free up cash flow for short and medium-term goals. In my experience lack of planning for short-term goals leads to one of two things, the goals never happening, or the clients funding the goal through the use of debt. Worst of all, it is usually funded via a credit card, with high interest rates resulting in future income being used to repay past goals. If you are able to identify the short-term goals, work out the cost and save in advance, you are more likely to achieve these goals and wont be wasting income on interest payments. A focus on your ongoing goals will result in you having a much higher standard of living both now and in the future, and isn’t that the aim of the game?

Pleated Skirt Taking cues from Prada’s latest season launch, look out for accordion pleated skirts. Whether you go for a metallic finish or a soft pastel pink or blue, midi pleated skirts will add polish and refine your look. Tuck in a blouse or better yet pair with a bodysuit and kitten heels for a classy ensemble for date night. At Forever New the Celene Copper Split Pleated Midi
Skirt will turn heads, wear with minimalist heels and a white top. Rain Anorak Unpredictable weather can often leave you with a mismatched outfit when you don’t know what jacket to pull out for what season. Will you walk away from Jesus or accept him in your life? Two men faced with a choice. Two very different responses. What would you do in this situation?
Rev John Lavender www.gpa.church and on Facebook
Consider two people who met Jesus. We read about them in the New Testament gospel of Luke. The first, a rich ruler, a young man, both impressive and powerful who seems to have it all, except for one thing, he has no certainty about where he would spend eternity. He asked Jesus, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life.” After talking for a while, Jesus put the punch line to him, “You lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.” What would you do? Think Jesus was crazy? Be fearful you would miss life’s good things? That is exactly what this rich, young man thought, because in one of the most tragic moments in the Bible, he walked away from Jesus “sad” because he loved the things of this world more. Zacchaeus was the second man. He was an unpopular corrupt tax collector. He was also very wealthy, yet when Jesus called Zacchaeus to follow him, Zacchaeus gladly welcomed Jesus and recog-

Finland banned homework and saw great results, but surely that’s not the only reason they are successful? Just recently a TV documentary explored the conundrum, that Finland, a country that has banned homework, is ranked first in the world in educational results. The implied suggestion for Australia was to ban school homework and improve Australia’s educational standards, which, as we saw last week, are low in comparison to other OECD countries and continuing to fall. Unfortunately Finland, like Australia, is sliding down the rankings, whereas in other countries, where homework is a prominent feature of their educational system, rankings are on the rise. Finland is no longer the first ranked country in the world on PISA results, but sixth behind Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan. Also, homework is not the only difference between the educational systems of Finland and Australia. It is always dangerous to look for a silver bullet solution to a complex problem, when in most cases the solutions are multi-faceted.
Regarding homework; Prof Susan Hallam from the Institute of Education (London) says there is “hard evidence” that homework really does improve how well pupils achieve. “There is no question about that,” she says. If homework is not the full solution, its impact should be monitored by genuine educational researchers in this country. However, there are other more prominent differences between the Finnish and Australian systems, which should also be researched as to impact. Firstly teaching is a highly respected profession in Finland and teacher’s salaries are far higher comparatively than those paid in Australia. Consequently the profession attracts the best and brightest. A much more significant difference is that Finland has a one tier school system, it is illegal to set up a private school in Finland, every student, from the richest to the poorest, the gifted to the average, all attend their local State School. I welcome your opinion on these differences and the consequences that flow. I can be contacted at rob@mastercoachingaustralia.com or through our website. You can also contact me via the paper if you have a particular topic you would like me to cover.
nising his dishonesty, he announced, “Look Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount!” What a difference! Two lost people. Both challenged to follow Jesus. One walks away sad. The other rejoices

in the good news of being received and accepted by God. We know money (and things) don’t bring happiness, yet we are slow to be convinced of it! Here is the point; walking away from Jesus brings sadness; accepting Jesus brings joy and new life. Have a great weekend.

your swim safety
Bathtub drownings are an all too common occurrence Taking your eyes off your child for even a few seconds can have disastrous consequences...
Julie Fletcher Nepean Swim and Fitness julie@nepeanswim.com.au nepeanaquaticcentre.com.au and on Facebook
We are all so time poor these days, so who can blame busy parents for trying to fit as much as possible into a day? Thinking “I’ll just go and grab a towel / hang the washing quickly / answer the door or phone / go to the toilet / attend to another child / do the dishes” while their child is having a bath. Thinking “I will only be gone for a minute”. Sadly, this is plenty of time for tragedy to occur. In Australia, on average, five children under the age of five drown and 47 are hospitalised due to bathtub drowning or near drowning incidents each year. One in four hospitalisations results in permanent injury such as brain damage. The majority of bathtub drowning deaths occur when there is an interruption to the bathing routine such as the doorbell or phone ringing while a parent is bathing a child, and are of children less than two-years-old. Most of the children who drowned in a bathtub in Australia were already in the bathtub when they drowned – if you must leave the bathroom, please take your child with you. I myself once called 000 after a bath
time incident – and I was right there, I hadn’t even left the bathroom. I was looking at my other child in the bath and nearly missed seeing my younger child put a container of bath gel mixed with water to his mouth and swig. (How this container got into the bath for my oneyear-old to get the lid off, add water and make a soapy soup I will never know). The shock of tasting the mixture caused my little boy to inhale sharply – causing an unknown amount of water and soap to enter his lungs. It happened so quickly but soon he became very distressed and wheezy and the ambulance was called. Luckily he was given the all clear and settled well, but I must admit I watched
him all night for any signs of secondary drowning (which occurs when water has been taken into the lungs). Secondary drowning is extremely rare, but it is important to have been with your child the entire time they were in the bath to witness any water inhalation which may have occurred. It is important to remember that older children do not provide adequate supervision, as they may not understand when the younger child is in trouble. Bath seats or bath aids are no substitute for active adult supervision as they do not prevent children from climbing or falling out of the seat and drowning. See you next week.

right? Well, here’s a few little tips to make sure you protect your credit rating and ensure you get the best package all round when purchasing a car. Firstly, all you see these days are low rate, deferred payment options, and offers from banks and finance institutes offering some form of finance, while this may be tempting you need to be aware that every application you make is a ‘hit’ on your credit score. What does this mean for you? You may be “shopping around for the best rate” by applying at a few different lenders or car dealerships, however by doing this multiple times, you are actually reducing your credit score which could affect the actual rate or approval when you finally decide on the right vehicle. So here’s my first tip, do not “just apply” to find out a rate. Do your homework, you can usually find out online if that’s more convenient, but always look at the fine print and don’t be afraid to ask any questions. Secondly, interest rate figures have been drilled into us for years, but don’t
be blinded by the simple figures. Instead compare different loans or different deals on the weekly payment you will be making, as this will include fees, charges, the total price of the car, and will help you better compare different packages. It will also help turn that 5.8 per cent or 9.7 per cent into a real number which you can work into your weekly household budget. And finally, be wary of unusual interest rate offers such as zero per cent, approval for these loans are harder to achieve, and there are usually special conditions and requirements to be met. The most common are things such as large deposits or large balloon payments at the end of the term. These offers also usually only apply on loans for three years, not the usual five or seven-year term. Due to the shorter term, the repayments may be higher and thus unaffordable. Overall, there are some great offers out there, and as long as you do your research, you will be able to get a great deal on your next new car.

Drive Car reviewer, Daniela Intili, said the Mazda 2 Maxx is a deserving winner in the competitive category. “Overall, the Mazda 2’s unrivalled safety package, presentation and dynamics ensures it’s still the king of city cars in 2017 and a worthy first car purchase,” she said. “It’s an engaging little car to drive and the only one with a six speed auto; the engine is willing and perky and it can cruise just as well on the open road.” Managing Director of Mazda Australia, Vinesh Bhindi, said it’s an honour to see the Mazda2 Maxx maintain its standing in the hotly contested Drive Car of the Year Awards. “We’re thrilled to see the Mazda2 Maxx named Drive’s Best City Car for the fourth year in a row,” he said. “A busy urban lifestyle demands the right car to get you from A to B in style. The Mazda2 Maxx certainly meets this criteria, offering affordable and compact versatility, with efficient performance and all the latest safety features.”

Ambition drives Tom NATHAN TAYLOR
oming third in your first major archery tournament is pretty special for anyone, but for Penrith teenager Tom Belshaw it’s even more impressive due to the fact he suffers from a degenerative eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa. While people with 20/20 vision can see a target 30m away, Tom’s condition means that same target appears 60m away – his vision is literally halved.

disabled athlete in the tournament – only took up the sport of archery three months ago. Speaking with the Weekender, Tom said he was shocked at just how well he performed at the competition. “I just can’t believe how well I did, I definitely wasn’t expecting to get a medal,” he said. “My friends and family were very proud of me but I’m yet to show off my medal at school.” Tom, who is a member of Penrith City Archers in Werrington, took up the sport
But despite all the challenges that face the Jamison High School student in day to day life, it doesn’t stop him from loading up his bow, pulling the string back and letting go. Earlier this month, the sharp shooter entered the prestigious Kid Bow Tournament in Dee Why – his first ever archery competition. Up against some of the best young archers in the state, Tom scored an impressive 789/900 to claim bronze. Making his medal win even more remarkable was the fact Tom – the only
because he always had a keen interest in archery. It was also the perfect sport for someone who has minimal peripheral vision. “I just thought it would be a good sport to do and I always wanted to have a go at it,” he said. “Plus another reason I wanted to try it was because, unlike other sports, you don’t need peripheral vision to do it.” While Tom doesn’t have any competitions coming up, he’s eager to continue to perfect his craft so one day he can turn that bronze medal into gold.

Set to do Penrith proud Seven locals to represent New South Wales at major softball tournaments NATHAN TAYLOR
whopping seven players from the Penrith City Softball Association will represent their state at two major national softball tournaments early next year. Five girls from Penrith City – Bridie Murphy, Alyssa Conley, Ashley Wright, Reese Robinson and Breanna Feeney – have been selected to represent NSW Metro at the 2018 U15 Girls’ Regional Softball Championship in Perth, while two boys – Patrick Beach and Brock Beckwith – have also been selected to represent NSW Metro at the 2018 U15 Boys’ Regional Softball Championship in Canberra. Along with the seven talented teenagers, two of Penrith City’s coaches were chosen to play a major role with Wayne Frost appointed as head coach of the NSW U15 Girls Metro team and Matthew Beach appointed as assistant coach of the NSW U15 Boys Metro team. Speaking with the Weekender, Frost said he was looking forward to taking the reigns of the team again after coaching the

Seven players and two coaches from Penrith City Softball Association have been selected to represent NSW side earlier this year. “This age group is rewarding in many ways. The girls at this age are willing to try different techniques and styles in regards
to both fielding and batting,” he said. “Watching them improve and develop as well as grow in confidence is always great to see.”
Playing softball since the tender age of four, Patrick Beach said he was thrilled to be representing NSW Metro for the second straight year. “I was stoked and very excited when I heard I was selected again,” he said. “I love the challenge and adventure of being in the NSW Metro team. It is a great experience because you learn new things and new skills from being with different coaches and players.” One player very much looking forward to donning the sky blue for the first time is Alyssa Conley, who worked hard in the recent trials to make her NSW representative dream come true. “I was so happy when I heard the news,” she said of her selection. “Since I failed to make the team the year before, I trained a lot harder this year and gave 110 per cent at the trials – so for all that hard work to pay off is just amazing stuff. “It was a goal of mine to make the team, so it’s awesome to have reached that goal. I’m really looking forward to being able to play my favourite sport in another state (Western Australia) and meet new, amazing people.”

Parkrun Nepean River celebrated its first anniversary recently LAUREN SUTTIE
ver 330 people recently took part in Nepean River Parkrun’s first anniversary event. Parkrun, held every Saturday at Tench Reserve, encourages the community to get healthy and active by participating in a timed 5km run. Event Director, Sheri Thomson, said Nepean River Parkrun is for all ages and abilities.

“It’s for everyone, it doesn’t matter if it takes you an hour and half to walk 5km, you can still come and we’ll still cheer you on and have a great time,” she said. To kick off birthday celebrations, awards were given out to participants who had achieved the most volunteering, personal bests and the most participation. unheved Golf Club has proven to the local golfing world they are well and truly the club to beat after claiming the Western Sydney Region Veteran’s Golf Association (WSRVGA) Club of the Year title for the second straight year. Dunheved won back to back titles with 1182 points, holding off Richmond Golf Club on 1174 and Leonay Golf Club on 1134 points. A red-hot season from Dunheved member, 72-year-old Joe Sainsbury, saw him crowned Player of the Year with 121 points, two shots ahead of Richmond’s

John Lawrance (119 points) and Noel Byles (113 points). Sainsbury grabbed a clear lead very early in the season and had virtually wrapped up victory three months ago, electing to then ‘sit’ on his best three scores totalling 121 points – confident his tally would hold up under pressure. Lawrance made a late rush at the prestigious title, finishing two shots behind Sainsbury with Byles finishing a further six shots back in third place. However, the winning didn’t stop there for Dunheved with fellow member Elaine Williams winning Ladies Player of the Year ahead of Wallacia’s Jo-Ellen Thorpe, Glenmore’s Sarah Dean and Springwood’s Sue Evers.

Usman keen for big bash Test star to stay with Thunder after signing new three-year contract NATHAN TAYLOR
ustralian Test star Usman Khawaja will be a member of the Sydney Thunder for the next three seasons after the 30-year-old opening batsman signed a new deal to stay with the club last week. Khawaja, who has played 21 matches for the Thunder, is the only remaining member of the club’s initial squad from the very first Big Bash League (BBL) season back in 2011. The left-hand batsman has scored 819 runs for the club, including two unbeaten centuries during the Thunder’s championship-winning season in 2015/16. “I’ve spent a lot of years at the Thunder and it’s very close to my heart, I love going back there,” Khawaja said. “I’ve been here since the first game and always enjoyed it, especially the last few years. The guys are good every time I go back and it’s very fun, very chilled out and they’re all good people. When you put that together it makes for good cricket. “I’m just enjoying my cricket, whether

it’s playing Grade, for Queensland, Thunder or Australia. It would be nice to come back and get some wins and hopefully win another trophy.” Sydney Thunder Director of Cricket, Michael Hussey, said he’s pleased to have been able to retain the services of Khawaja. “Usman’s been at the club since its formation, he’s obviously a classy player and a real leader in the team,” he said. “It’s always a balancing act seeing how much he’ll be around but we’ve seen how much impact he can have playing a limited number of games. I’m absolutely delighted that he’s committed his future to the club.” Sydney Thunder General Manager, Lee Gorman, praised Khawaja for his attitude on and off the field. “I am thrilled that Usman has committed to the Thunder for the next three years,” he said. “He brings leadership, experience and quality. He epitomises the values of the Thunder Nation.” The Thunder kick start their 2017/18 BBL campaign against the Sydney Sixers on December 19.

AUSSIE RULES
Girls rule growing sport Penrith Ramettes to field three teams in AFL Women’s Competition next year NATHAN TAYLOR
ith the second AFL Women’s competition right around the corner, interest in the female form of the game continues to go from strength to strength. This week, the Penrith Ramettes announced they would be fielding three teams in the Sydney AFL Women’s Competition in season 2018. Penrith will be the only AFL club in western Sydney to have teams entered in the Premier Division (first grade), Division 1 (reserve grade) and U18s competition. The Premier Division and Division 1 teams will hit the field under the AuburnPenrith Giants banner, while the U18s team will run out as the Penrith Ramettes. Penrith Rams Chairman and Director of Women’s Football, Greg Corless, said it was an exciting time for the sport in the region. “To have three teams next year will be sensational, we are really catering for everyone,” he told the Weekender. “For the first time in this region, the
W
Penrith Ramettes will have a female U18s team. We’ve had nearly 30 expressions of interest for this team already.” While the Auburn-Penrith teams will split their time between Greygums Oval in Cranebrook and Mona Park in Auburn, the U18s team will train and play out of Greygums Oval. Corless said the club is on the hunt for new players for all three teams. “We are looking for anyone. It doesn’t matter what shape or size you are or how much experience you have,” he said. “Our senior players and coaches are always there to help new players progress their game. “Our club is a great little community, and a lot of the players socialise together away from the field as well.” While coaches for the trio of teams are yet to be announced, pre-season training officially got underway this week. If you’ve ever been interested in playing the growing sport of women’s AFL, now is your chance. For more information or to register, call Greg Corless on 0412 579 061 or email greg@penrithrams.com.au.
