he political career of State Londonderry MP Bart Bassett is in tatters after being drawn into an Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) investigation into political donations.

Mr Bassett stood aside from the Liberal Party on Wednesday afternoon, saying he was, “not prepared to allow this to become a distraction for the Liberal Party or the Government”.

“This morning the ICAC extended its inquiry to look into whether Buildev sought to influence me in my former role as Hawkesbury Mayor,” Mr Bassett said in a statement.

“I reject this allegation and I look forward to my opportunity to clear my name.”

Today, Mr Bassett will appear at ICAC to defend claims that there is a link between an $18,000 donation originating from Boardwalk Resources to his 2011 election campaign; and his decision as Mayor in late 2009 to use his casting vote in a Council meeting to support a seniors housing development in North Richmond by Buildev.

Boardwalk Resources and Buildev are both owned by Nathan Tinkler. Political donations by developers were banned in 2009.

Though he has not been drawn into commentary about his decision to approve the seniors home, Mr Bassett oddly tweeted on May 1, prior to the allegations being aired, that he was: “Very proud of [the] nursing home at North Richmond which officially opened today. Nothing to hide about a great decision.”

Mr Bassett informed Premier Mike Baird of his decision to stand aside, and it was accepted.

enore Price was born in a year when the world was at war, when homes did not have televisions and when cars were only owned by the rich – the changes she has seen over a century could not have been imagined.

The Emu Plains resident celebrated her 100th birthday last Sunday, a milestone worthy of a big celebration.

Ms Price’s family joined staff and residents at UnitingCare Edinglassie Lodge to celebrate the milestone birthday on Monday, surprising the birthday girl with an impromptu visit.

“I didn’t know anything about this. I was just sitting in the school-room and then they all walked in,” exclaimed Ms Price.

The dining room was decorated with balloons and before Ms Price blew out her candles, those who sat down to celebrate with her sung ‘Happy Birthday’.

It is happiness that Ms Price attributes to her longevity.

“I just think that keeping happy all your life helps (to contribute to a long life),” she said.

“She’s always said ‘everything in moderation’, so I have tried to stick by

that but some things are a bit difficult,” Ms Clark said.

“Everybody loves her. She has always been a person who is not easily upset and doesn’t upset others.”

Police are encouraging local residents and local businesses to be vigilant when making cash transactions after a large number of counterfeit notes were uncovered in the area.

The first incident was reported at about 4pm on Friday, August 15, when a store on Woodriff Street, Penrith found a counterfeit $100 note in the till.

On Tuesday, August 19, at about 8.20pm, a service station in Aspen Street, South Penrith, reported a second $100 counterfeit note. That same night, at around 9pm a tourist attempted to use a counterfeit $50 note at a licensed premises on Mulgoa Road, Penrith. She was stopped by security and police established that it had been given to her at another premises.

If I see one more person pour ice over themselves, I think I’ll turn all the lights out, close the door and come back next year.

Actually, now that I think about it, the girls can keep doing it.

It seems that as a society, we are feeling more charitable than ever. If nothing else, the recent ice bucket challenge craze proves that we’re willing to put our hand up for a cause.

Or does it?

When Queensland newsreader Lincoln Humphries refused the ice bucket challenge last week, he encouraged everyone, “who has more than what they need, to donate what they can to the people who need it most”.

“That’s what charity is about, not putting yourself through mild discomfort with a bucket of ice and water,” he said.

It struck a chord with me because all week I’d been questioning people’s motives behind the whole ice bucket craze.

For the uninformed, the ice bucket challenge involves getting soaked by a bucket of ice water in the name of charity.

It is held to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known in Australia as motor neurone disease, and encourages donations to research.

If you don’t go ahead with the ice bucket challenge, you’re supposed to donate $100 to a relevant charity. That’s confusing in itself as it would appear most people would rather pour a bucket of water over themselves than actually donate to charity.

The whole thing is just a bit narcissistic for my liking. I’m willing to bet a few people I know who’ve done the challenge don’t even know why they’re doing it.

But hey, it gets a few hundred Facebook likes and people love it on Instagram, so it’s all good, right? On the contrary, I reckon it creates a whole

bunch of people who reckon they’ve done something amazing for charity when in reality they’ve done nothing at all.

I don’t want to get really down on something that’s there for a good cause, but assisting a charity should not be about boosting your own popularity or ego.

I should point out that I am in no way questioning the worthiness of research into motor neurone disease, which is a horrible disease that can affect a person’s ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe, and has taken way too many Australian lives.

But even though relevant organisations will report much higher donation figures thanks to the ice bucket challenge, the problem will exist way after the hashtag stops being trendy.

And that’s my big reservation here – I don’t buy that the majority of people doing the ice bucket challenge are legitimately going to keep talking about and fundraising for the cause. It’s about ego and popularity and very little else.

While donations may have increased, I can safely say that less than a handful of the hundreds of videos I’ve seen on various social networking websites actually have a message related to donating, or a mention of the cause.

It’s creating a falsehood.

Plus, what about the elephant in the room – dozens of countries around the world are beyond crisis point when it comes to water availability, and here we are pouring it over ourselves to give our friends a laugh.

If you really want to do something for charity, find a cause that you can really get passionate about. Whether you can tell everyone on social media about it should not be part of the criteria.

If you find a cause that touches your heart in some way, you’re much more likely to continue to drive the message well into the future. Make it a lifelong commitment.

Fernhill will host a Picnic Race Day for the next five years thanks to Council approval people,� spokesperson Peter Harvey said.

Mr Harvey said there were some concerns about wet weather. “After last year’s dry weather they have sensibly pushed the event a month back.

The other issue though is wet weather and what impact traffic may have on the grounds,� he said. “It’s not a deal breaker but we’d like to know what the plan will be.�

he Fernhill Picnic Races are set to become a Penrith tradition after Penrith Council approved the event for a five year stint.

On Monday evening Council was asked to consider a proposal to allow the Races to run for another five years, with a yearly review of the event.

Organiser Brenda Tripp spoke of how the Picnic Races were an asset to Penrith, Mulgoa and broader western Sydney. “On November 9 last year we held the first Fernhill Picnic Races, which was also a first for Sydney. The positive feedback we got from that event was very affirming,� she explained. “The Picnic Races celebrate the history of Fernhill Estate and the region. And it supports local businesses – last year the hairdresser’s at Mulgoa couldn’t keep up with the demand.�

This year discounted tickets will be offered to Mulgoa residents to encourage local participation in the event.

The Mulgoa Progress Association also expressed its support for the Picnic Races. “Contrary to popular belief, we do support the Picnic Races. Last year it was an enjoyable day for a wide range of

Great opportunity for Penrith, says Council

I

n a massive coup for residents who wish to live in Penrith CBD, Astina apartments have been given the green light to proceed with their plans to build brand new apartment living, right in the middle of town.

Earlier this year Stimson and Baker Planning approached Council on behalf of Astina Apartments regarding purchasing 21-25 Woodriff Street, Penrith for a mixed use development.

The site is currently used for overflow car parking, but has great potential due to its prime location near Memory Park and proximity to the main shopping strip.

On Monday evening, Councillors voted unanimously for the next stage of planning to proceed, agreeing that the development would bring something unique to Penrith.

“This is a great development. Seven storeys of apartment living, a pool, shops – it will be a great opportunity for Penrith,” Cr Mark Davies said.

Cr Marcus Cornish agreed that Penrith was the big winner from the project.

“This proposal is outstanding,” he declared.

“All future buildings in Penrith will be measured against this proposal.”

Consultant town planner for the project Warwick Stimson from Stimson and Baker Planning said that the development is a very exciting opportunity for Penrith.

“Astina are an established accommodation provider in Penrith,” Mr Stimson said.

“The proposal includes 42 units across seven levels, designed by local architect Peter Morson from Morson Group.

“It will provide much needed accommodation for up to 170 visitors to the city, along with an additional restaurant offering at ground level and a small component of commercial office space.”

Up to 50 construction jobs and 40-50 direct ongoing jobs will be created by the development, which will activate the eastern end of the Penrith CBD, providing the potential for increased trading opportunities for existing restaurants and businesses in the area.

Subject to property negotiations with Penrith Council, the project is anticipated to commence construction by the middle of next year.

Wentworth Community Housing was also interested in the site but Council is now in discussions for the organisation to build elsewhere in the CBD. Monday night’s approval came after a slight delay when Councillors refused to rubber stamp the development at a meeting earlier this year.

Police snapshot Colyton: Concern after boy approached last Friday

Emu Plains: Man charged after breaking into parked car

Police are appealing to the public for information after a teenager was approached by an unknown man in Colyton last week. Just before 9am on Friday, August 22, a 15-year-old boy was walking along Bass Street when a blue hatchback with a red stripe on the roof stopped across the road. The male driver beeped at the teen, gesturing for him to approach the car. The boy continued walking to a friend’s house and police were notified later. Police from St Marys Local Area Command are investigating the incident and would like to speak to a man described as being of Mediterranean/ Middle Eastern in appearance, approximately 50-years-old with a full white beard.

A man has been charged with stealing after a parked car with the door open caught the eye of patrolling officers. Police allege the 23-year-old man from Emu Plains was walking along Dallas Street, Emu Plains, at 11.30pm on Thursday, August 21, when he broke into a parked car. The man allegedly stole a number of items from the vehicle, including a backpack, TAFE books, a USB device, a woman’s coat and some change.

Police were patrolling the area when they saw the parked vehicle. They stopped and spoke to the man, who was nearby and had reason to search him. He was taken back to Penrith Police Station and charged. He was refused bail at the time but will appear back in court at a later date to face the charges over the incident.

Penrith: Witnesses sought after petrol station break-in

Castlereagh: Another man charged over assault

Witnesses are being asked to come forward after a local service station was broken into this week. Police say that at some point between the evening of Sunday, August 24 and 4.30am on Monday, August 25, an offender or a number of offenders broke into the Mulgoa Road, Penrith service station. Once inside the premises, the unknown offender/s were able to gain access to cash and cigarettes. Police were called on the morning of Monday, August 25, and set up a crime scene, which was examined by senior crime officers. Police are calling for anyone with information about the incident or anyone who noticed any suspicious behaviour to come forward.

A seventh man has been arrested for the kidnap and assault of a man that occurred earlier this year in Castlereagh. A 23-year-old member of the Rebels Penrith Chapter has been arrested and charged with ‘special aggravated kidnapping’ over the incident, which occurred between May 8 and May 10 this year. Police allege a 45-year-old man was abducted, tied up and assaulted by a number of men. A strike force called Salsola was formed by the Gangs Squad to investigate the issue. On Friday, detectives attended a government facility in Lithgow where they formally charged the 23-yearold. He is the seventh member of the outlaw motorcycle gang that has been charged.

The festival attracts tens of thousands of people to the area, but each year numerous festival goers are charged for illegal drug possession and many are conveyed to hospital for drug use.

At last year’s event, a 23-year-old Victorian man died after he suffered a series of cardiac arrests from an apparent drug overdose.

“Anyone who is considering experimenting with illicit or synthetic drugs should stop to consider the possible consequences and not do it.”

he State Crime Command’s Drug Squad has issued a warning to the public amidst concerns that tablets containing potentially deadly levels of a psychoactive substance could be circulating the illegal drug scene.

The tablets, which are light blue in colour and stamped with a batman logo, contain dangerous levels of the extremely potent substance called 25c-NBOMe. They are being sold to drug users as a form of ecstasy but what those users may not know is that similar drugs have been responsible for a number of deaths in Australia and overseas.

“We are aware of the Blue Batman pills and, in particular, a number of bad reactions users had after taking them at an event in the Hawkesbury last weekend,” said Commander of the Drug Squad, Detective Superintendent Tony Cook.

“In fact, similar pills recently seized by police contained the drug 25c-NBOMe, one of the so called new psychoactive substances recently outlawed. A closely related substance was in fact involved in the death of a young man in Sydney last year.”

Chapter closes at Emu Plains Story of Emu Plains Library to end, with locals encouraged to use Penrith branch

chapter has closed at Emu Plains Library, with the doors to the much loved community facility to be shut permanently.

On Monday evening, Councillors gave in to financial pressures and voted to close the library, which has been a fixture of Emu Plains since April 1980 when it was officially opened with a shop front at the now Lennox Shopping Centre.

The library opened to the public in its present premises in January 1988 but will now likely become a daycare centre.

Councillor Marcus Cornish said that he had walked past the library many times and couldn’t tell if it was even open or not.

“I think it was run down and poorly managed and now it has come to this,” he said.

“It serviced a part of Penrith that I think is often treated as second rate and I only agree on its closure if it becomes a childcare facility.”

Councillor Mark Davies said that it was a necessary decision.

“I just want to highlight what this Council is doing to move forward its library services and embrace online technologies,” he said.

COUNCIL BRIEFS s Penrith Regional Gallery and the Lewers Bequest will host ‘River to River – Interwoven Landscapes’ from Saturday, 30 August to Sunday, 16 November.

The exhibition celebrates the Lachlan and Nepean Rivers and their communities through contemporary sculpture and weaving.

River to River brings together new work by Condobolin-based Wiradjuri artist Bev Coe and Sydney-based artist Bronwyn Berman in a three-dimensional mediation on the importance of river ecosystems to community, identity, health, play, sustainability and amenity. Korean folk paintings from Penrith’s sister city Gangseo-Gu will form part of the exhibition through environmental explorations.

Opening the exhibition will be Hon. Justice Nicola Pain from the Land and Environment Court and Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM. A traditional Korean performance will welcome visitors with the opening being held from 4pm on Saturday, 30 August.

Raft of improvements coming Castlereagh Road and Russell Street to be upgraded thanks to RMS funding

astlereagh Road in Castlereagh and Russell Street in Emu Plains will receive major upgrades after the Roads and Maritime Services granted Penrith Council a total of $1.4 million to fix the major thoroughfares.

Each year the RMS grants Council funding to repair regional roads, and this year the resurfacing of Castlereagh Road has been identified as a major project.

The road will be resurfaced for a stretch of 300 metres from Post Office Road travelling northwards.

Also on the agenda is the reconstruction of Russell Street between Old Bathurst Road and Kite Street in Emu Plains.

But an even greater amount of funding has been set aside by the RMS so that Penrith Council can continue to build shared pathways to connect the city.

Council has been granted $2.5 million for the 2014/15 financial year to continue building the cycleway along the Great Western Highway at St Marys.

A priority stage in this year’s works is the construction of a separate pedestrian and cycle bridge, immediately to the south of the existing road bridge over South Creek.

St Marys Soundlapse Audio tours through the heart of Queen Street, St Marys will be held throughout September.

The free tours, conducted by Council, celebrate the outcomes of the Queen Street Riches and Textures 2014 – Soundlapse project.

Accessible online or as a mobile walking tour downloaded from the App Store, Soundlapse will take participants on a journey through Queen Street’s past, present and future.

Using archival sounds, recorded interview snippets, narrations and local music, the audio tours are designed

Researchers at the Musculoskeletal Ageing Research Program (Nepean Hospital) are looking for healthy participants for a blood study (The COPs Study) The study involves some simple questions about your health and, if suitable, we will then take a blood sample.

We aim to recruit participants (male and female) 20 years and older.

Participants need to be in good health.

Participation in this study will involve one visit (one hour).

Another key route is the shared-use path along the southern side of the Great Western Highway, Emu Plains, between River Road and Russell Street.

This path will provide pedestrians and cyclists a substantial link between Emu Plains and the Penrith City Centre via the proposed Nepean River Green Bridge. The path will also provide access towards the Great River Walk shared-use path.

Mayor Ross Fowler thanked the RMS for their substantial contribution to the infrastructure of Penrith City.

“The cycleway in Emu Plains will be a critical link with the Nepean River Green Bridge, when it is complete, to the Great Western Highway and Russell Street. It will make the local cycleway network much easier to use,” he said.

“The cycleway bridge over South Creek is quite a substantial investment that will connect Penrith and St Marys, which is really positive for residents who wish to use greener forms of transport.”

Cr Fowler added that the improvements to the local roads network will be greatly appreciated by Penrith motorists.

The State Opposition has launched an attack on the Government for “wasting” money promoting the new Opal Cards.

“The Liberals are wasting over $7 million – and counting – on their Opal Card marketing campaign while at the same time train commuters are being prevented from buying and topping-up Opal Cards at station ticket windows – the priorities of the Opal Card roll out are all wrong,” Shadow Minister for Transport

Penny Sharpe said earlier this week.

“I’ve heard of $100,000 ideas but a man dressed as an oversized Opal Card is certainly not one of them – and the fact that someone has been paid that amount for it is astounding.”

Ms Sharpe claims the Government also spent $50,000 for a third-party to upload the ‘Opal Man Card’ ads to Youtube and social media, and says the job should have been done internally.

enrith Council is currently investigating several cases of domestic hoarding and squalor, as both Council and the NSW Government work to solve the burgeoning issue.

Hoarding is a complex disorder where an individual acquires and fails to discard large numbers of possessions, which appear to be of very little value.

“There are currently several cases of domestic hoarding and squalor being actively investigated by Council Officers, with case time extending from one month to six years,” a spokesperson for Council said.

“Some of the cases involve residences where a problem has been previously addressed, only to see it return to the previous state over time.”

Council can proceed with cleaning up the block, but the cost is unlikely to be recovered and is a burden on the community.

“Clean-up costs can range from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. In a recent hoarding example, Council Officers have received quotes ranging between $30,000 and $55,000 for the clean-up of accumulated materials external to a dwelling,” Council said.

State Mulgoa MP, Tanya Davies The NSW Government is trying to find a solution for Councils, and a Parliamentary Committee recently handed down its recommendations for the management and disposal of waste on private lands. Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies was a member of the Committee and said regulation alone will not address the issue of hoarding and in some cases, had a negative impact on the issue.

“As the old saying goes ‘what is one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ became evident in cases presented to the committee,” she said.

Kallyn Gardner is joining St Marys LAC new Local Area Commands this week, where they will remain for 12 months of on the job training and study by distance education, before they officially graduate from Charles Sturt University with an Associate Degree in Policing Practice.

their badge. The fact they are attesting today proves they have the dedication to succeed and uphold the Force’s statement of values,” NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said.

en brand new police officers, fresh out of the Academy, have joined the fight against crime in the local area.

Penrith Local Area Command welcomed five new probationary constables to the ranks this week, as did St Marys Local Area Command.

Among the officers joining St Marys Local Area Command is 23-year-old Kallyn Gardner who, by attesting with her class mates on Friday, August 22, at the NSW Police Academy at Golburn, fulfilled a difficult promise.

“When Kallyn left for the NSW Police Academy, her mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness but was made to promise she would attest no matter what,” a NSW police spokesperson said.

The 23-year-old regularly visited her mother and family while she completed her studies but sadly, her mother passed away a few months ago.

“She kept a brave face and fulfils the promise to her mother by attesting with her friends in Class 322,” the spokesperson said.

Ms Gardner is one of 170 other probationary constables who began work at their

14 Push for Stony Creek fix continues at Council

ressure for a solution to the Stony Creek Road causeway over South Creek is mounting, with Councillors on Monday evening expressing their concerns about the crossing.

Cr Maurice Girotto, who initiated a campaign earlier this month to have the causeway upgraded to a bridge has called on Council to find out just how often the road is closed and inconveniencing local commuters. “I require a traffic count for that road and we also need to find out how often the road needs to be closed because of flooding,� he said. “It is my understanding that it is one of the first roads to close in wet weather and frequently the last to re-open.�

Mayor Ross Fowler agreed. “It is probably the only one,� he quipped.

Cr Girotto this week has received support from both sides of politics, with Labor Cr Prue Car meeting with NSW Shadow Minister for Roads, Walt Secord at the causeway earlier this week. “This crossing has been the site of regular flooding and many accidents, including a tragic fatality,� Cr Car said.

Mr Secord said the road was an important thoroughfare and deserved attention.

“This road links the Penrith, Blacktown and Hawkesbury regions but it’s often blocked by flooding at an out-of-date and dangerous bridge,� he said. “I saw for myself that this is a road in need of an upgrade. All levels of Government across all three regions need to work in tandem towards a solution for Stony Creek Road.�

Liberal-Independent Cr Bernard Bratusa has called for a report into the crossing, including the feasibility of a bridge and how a bridge might impact the future expansion of the region. “I would like a report from Council on the economics of a bridge. We can put no dollar value on a life,� he said.

State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres has welcomed an announcement by Heritage Minister Rob Stokes that Penrith will benefit from $13,500 under the NSW Government Heritage Grants Program.

The grant funding represents two of 181 heritage grants being announced across NSW. Mr Ayres welcomed grants of $8,000 and $5,500 to Penrith City Council for heritage advisory services and local heritage places grants programs. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m delighted these grants have been awarded for valued heritage services in the local area,â&#x20AC;? Mr Ayres said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The NSW Heritage Grants program is designed to provide direct financial assistance to private owners, councils

ocal charity Christ Mission Possible has received a very generous donation of over $16,000 from the Keller Australia Group.

Each year Keller hold the Coast 2 Coast dirt bike ride from Adelaide to Darwin across some of the most testing terrain on the planet.

This year, the 11 day ride started yesterday, on August 28, and the team hope to raise $250,000 for charities across Australia that receive little to no government assistance.

Christ Mission Possible, which does fantastic work aiding the homeless in Penrith and western Sydney, is one of the beneficiaries.

Last Friday, the Keller Group presented Christ Mission Possible with a parting gift of $16,380. Christ Mission CEO, Marty Beckett, said his team were incredibly grateful for the donation.

“That money will go towards our food solutions services,” he said.

“We have one storage unit at our Kingswood centre but are opening up a second one with additional storage for food that we distribute to the community. We are also building a commercial kitchen so that we can cook lunches.

“Our team met the awesome people

Last Friday’s cheque presentation from the Coast 2 Coast challenge on Friday for the presentation and it was a great day.”

He said that the CEO of the Keller Group, Mark Kliner, had been particularly great in supporting Christ Mission. Mr Kliner praised the work of the organisation.

“They are doing amazing work with homelessness and while we know this ride won’t be easy we hope it offers a financial boost,” he said.

“We’ll be riding in the dark, sometimes well into the night and nearly always on dirt and rock.”

Councillors divided over votes John Thain: “This proposal would favour businesses over residents”

usinesses may have the deciding vote in the next round of local government elections if reform proposed by the NSW Shooters and Fishers Party gains support.

The party have proposed an amendment to voting for the City of Sydney Council that would see all business owners automatically enrolled to vote for all of that Council’s elections.

But Penrith Councillors are divided on what the implications would be for Penrith, with Cr John Thain concerned the bill has the potential to be applied to Penrith’s local government elections and give business an unfair say in Council’s governance.

“Equality has been really important to our nation. With 10,000 businesses in Penrith this proposal would favour businesses over residents,” he said.

“Businesses would have undue influence over Council and I think it would make it more difficult for independents to be elected. Businesses tend to favour the major parties and I think government works better and is fairer with independent voices.”

He said that it was also concerning that if passed by the NSW Government, that the legislation could impact Penrith without there being any consultation of residents.

“Business owners can already apply to vote but I am concerned this system would give businesses two votes compared to one for residents,” he said.

Cr Mark Davies indicated that there could be merit to the system and refused to oppose the reforms outright, but agreed that consultation should take place.

The next time Ross Fowler and John Thain contest their seats at Council, they may need the voting power of businesses “If we simply oppose the reforms then that does not constitute consultation,” he said.

“We should vote that Council supports further consultation on the issue with Local Government NSW.

“I actually think there could be some legitimacy to this bill in that a lot of business owners invest a lot of their money locally.”

Cr Thain agreed and said that by no means is Council opposed to business, but

that local government elections need to be democratic and fair.

Penrith Councillors agreed to raise the matter with Local Government NSW, the peak body for Councils and conduct consultation with the local community.

ocal residents have 90,000 reasons to purchase an iconic Legacy badge next week, in support of the organisation that gives a helping hand to the families of service men and women who have lost their lives or their health.

90,000 widows, children and adults with a disability are supported through donations made in Legacy Week, the first week of September.

“Our service men and women, and their families, have given their health and their lives in the defence of Australia. They defended our freedom and the right for us to live in a democracy,” said Sydney Legacy President Eric Easterbrook, of Penrith.

“This is why Legacy is still important and why all Australians should never forget why and how they are able to live in the lifestyle and conditions that we have.”

Nepean Legacy was formed in 1962 and

since then has been supporting a large number of local families by contributing to schooling costs, rent and any other needs they might have.

It is estimated by the Department of Veterans Affairs that even if we never send another service person to fight for the country, Legacy will be needed until at least 2086.

“Our service men and women must have the belief that, should they pay the price of diminished health or loss of life in the course of their duty the rest of Australia will look after ‘the missus and kids’,” Mr Easterbrook said.

He said the importance of Legacy was certainly not fading.

“Legacy is still so important because we have widows, widowers and families who have lost their dearest friend, father or mother,” he said.

s the Penrith Show draws closer, local exhibitors have been busy with last minute preparations, with local students perhaps working the hardest of all as they prepare for Saturday afternoon’s Grand Parade.

The Grand Parade was a forgotten Penrith Show tradition, brought back for the show’s 170th anniversary last year but as it was so well received, the parade is here to stay.

Local students from all the agricultural schools in the area will parade around the arena with their school’s sheep, cows and even alpacas.

“This is something very special that we have brought back. Agriculture has been lost for a few years now so it is absolutely wonderful that we can have it on display, with the help of our agricultural schools,” said Penrith Paceway CEO, Lorraine Pozza.

The Grand Parade forms a unique part of the annual Penrith Show School’s Agricultural Competition, in that it is the only time that students from each of the different schools come together in a noncompetition format.

“Last year, rather than competing against each other, it gave the students

that sense of the bigger picture of agriculture in education. They can look back and see that stream of kids and animals and see that they have all been linked by a passion for agriculture,” said Caroline Chisholm College’s Geoffrey Clerke, who has been assisting agriculture students in their preparation for the parade.

“The Grand Parade has an atmosphere – there is a bit of excitement and a bit of tension. It is not competitive so it gives the students the chance to see what it is like to be part of a big team.”

Year 10 Caroline Chisholm Student Mireille Tamer will be taking part in the Grand Parade for the first time and is hoping it will give her some experience for a future career in agriculture.

“I am looking forward to it – this is the first year that I am going to be parading.

I think it will be quite nerve-wracking at first, but because there will be so many other animals and students there, it will be like we are all in it together, so I don’t think it will be quite as scary as I am anticipating,” she said.

“If you want to do agriculture at university, things like this give you that background knowledge and experience. It is giving us the basic skills, like teaching us how to lead an animal and how to perform in competition. Considering we don’t live

Research set to help identify adverse pregnancy complications sooner

Narelle Kennedy at Nepean Hospital The research of Nepean Hospital sonographer, Narelle Kennedy, who works in the Perinatal Ultrasound Department, has given health professionals a new way of predicting adverse pregnancy complications.

The PhD Student at the University of Sydney Medical School at Nepean has won a prestigious award from the Society of Obstetric Medicine of Australia and New Zealand (SOMANZ) for her work, which measures the thickness of subcutaneous fat and its relation to high risk pregnancies.

She took out the top prize for ‘Best Poster Presentation and Research’ at the SOMANZ and Australasian Diabetes in Pregnancy Society Joint Scientific Meeting last month.

“Our group at Nepean Medical School, Sydney University, is the first to measure subcutaneous fat in pregnancy to assess its ability to predict adverse pregnancy outcomes,” Ms Kennedy said.

“This simple measurement performed during routine pregnancy examinations, has shown to be superior to body mass index (BMI) measurements when assessing risks to these women.”

With these measurements, it is possible to predict pregnancy complications like gestational diabetes, hypertensive disease and caesarean section.

Ms Kennedy said the findings have the potential to have a huge impact if implemented in the long-term.

“If implemented, these findings have the potential to make it easier to triage high risk women and could contribute to better outcomes by providing appropriate care,” Ms Kennedy said.

She said receiving the award was a fantastic honour.

“I was very proud to receive the award, it is great to get acknowledgment from SOMANZ and I look forward to continuing with the research.”

Dog laws must be tightened Disability seminar addresses issues impacting guide dogs in the local area

“A guide dog and its owner are trained to travel a certain path. It is not as simple as crossing to the other side of the road.

“We understand that this may be the only option for pet owners, but if people live on streets that are frequented by guide dog owners, having those pets in the backyard or home will make their trip much easier.”

Residents are also being urged to warn a guide dog owner or vulnerable people such as the elderly if they have seen a stray dog on the street.

“Just a simple warning would mean that person could avoid that area or go home.

We are not asking anyone to risk themselves and intervene in a dog attack but just a simple warning could stop an attack from occurring,” Ms Roberts said.

The Centre is also calling on the State Government to tighten laws in relation to dog attacks.

“We would like to see if the rules around shopping centres can be changed.

Currently if a dog is out the front tied up it’s considered they are under ‘effective’ control however, they can distract a working guide dog, potentially causing accidents,” she said.

“Significant penalties for people who do not secure their dog should also be looked at,” Ms Roberts added.

epean Disabilities Resource Centre is campaigning for a tightening of laws surrounding dog attacks and is calling on the community for support.

Over 30 members of the community, many with guide dogs, participated in a seminar recently at the centre addressing issues such as attacks on guide dogs and the safe keeping of pets.

Centre Coordinator Denise Roberts said the forum was a great success.

“We had in attendance a representative from Penrith Police, Steve Groves of Lamrocks Solicitors, Noel Fuller from Penrith Council Animal Service and a representative from Penrith MP Stuart Ayres’ office,” she said.

“The aim was twofold; to educate ourselves about dog attacks but also raise awareness in the community about their responsibilities.”

Ms Roberts said that there are a few small things residents in Penrith can do to make the lives of guide dog owners or the elderly with small dogs easier.

“If a resident keeps a dog in the front yard of their property, that dog can be very distracting for the guide dog,” she said.

In a bid to raise awareness of the incidence of acquired brain injuries, which refers to any brain injury acquired after birth, including strokes, and to raise funds to promote recovery, Australian men will be growing their sideburns big and bushy for ‘Sidetember’, an initiative aiming to raise $100,000 nationally.

lasses were suspended at Emmaus Catholic College at Kemps Creek earlier this month, but for all the right reasons.

Students and teachers traded their classrooms and desks for the sunny outdoors, and school uniforms for a myriad of colourful dress-up costumes to take part in the school’s Emmaus Walk.

The Walk was held to fund upgrades to the school, including the construction of shades for the bus area, which will be of comfort in hot and wet weather.

Aleisha De Fague, one of the College Captains for 2015, said the Walk was a great success. “‘We expect more’ is a saying we have at Emmaus. I think the Walk Day met all our expectations. It was a fun, involved day from start to finish,” she said.

Passers-by were treated to a parade of costumes as the students walked a lap around the suburb, with even the teachers getting involved.

Principal Dr Brad Campbell exchanged his normal professional dress for a Batman costume, aided and supported

by Assistant Principal Michael Pate as Robin, and Executive member Chris Welch as Superman.

The Principals Masterclass for the Catholic Dioceses of Parramatta was held at Rooty Hill recently, with Brad Campbell, Principal of Emmaus Catholic College Kemps Creek one of three guest speakers at the event.

Mr Campbell has over 30 years’ experience across three dioceses and shared the knowledge he gleaned from a variety of middle management and executive positions spanning administration, pastoral care and curriculum.

“In order to foster the development of new leaders for the future, we need to tell our teachers to see their potential,” he said.

Using excerpts from Pope Francis’

Evangelii Gaudium and clips from popular films, Mr Campbell demonstrated the importance of recognising different leadership styles.

The local principal shared his model for lifelong education, the result of his doctoral studies in education focusing on the interrelationship between leadership, learning and student engagement.

Mr Campbell also spoke of how he has connected with staff and students since commencing as Principal at Emmaus Catholic College in January.

“The change to the management process was a collaborative one, where everyone was asked to consider the qualities that the ‘ideal Emmaus graduate’ should have,” he said.

“We have already seen a significant positive change in our students and we’re excited about continuing this work in the future.”

The annual celebration brings big crowds and has plenty of live entertainment, stalls, food, a grand parade and more.

The competition launch, which was held on Monday, August 25, comes after the TAFE Western Sydney Institute ambassador posed for Fine Arts students at the Penrith TAFE campus for an in-house competition.

The public are now invited to submit their own interpretative portrait of the

radio announcer for a chance to take out the top place in the Wippabald Prize, based on several poses he produced for TAFE WSI students.

“I had a lot of fun recreating some famous people and poses; Rodin’s The Thinker, Mr. President (Abraham Lincoln) and my own take on ‘Master and Commander’ – no offence, Russell; and I look forward to seeing the entries.

Creative idea up for top award Popular Creative Fringe concept nominated for Sydney Design Award

he Creative Fringe is a collaboration of local businesses that has changed the way creative services are delivered, and now the innovative group has been recognised in the Sydney Design Awards for the branding of their new organisation.

It was last week that the collaboration between White River Design, WriteCopy and Nepean Inner Designs, was awarded the position of ‘finalist’ in the Marketing – Brand Experience category of the Sydney Design Awards.

The Creative Fringe concept, which represents a space dedicated to allowing creatives, freelancers, consultants and business owners to work together on projects in a shared environment, was developed by White River Design initially.

Using their custom Brand Personalities system, the team developed a brand for the organisation using an archetype called ‘The Explorer’, in the hope it would “amaze, educate and inspire”.

“Our team was excited to work on such a creative and innovative project,” White River Design graphic designer James Scott said.

The written component of the brand,

particularly the material on the Creative Fringe’s website, was developed by local copywriter Melinda Leyshon of WriteCopy.

“Developing a voice for The Fringe was sheer joy – I had free reign to be creative and inspiring, while still ensuring that the tone... would resonate with potential fellow collaborators,” Ms Leyshon said.

“Working with other creatives gives your ideas a pulse.”

The co-working space, the physical building that is home to The Creative Fringe, was created with the assistance of Nepean Inner Designs.

“This is an interior designer’s dream job – the vision was clear, and working with other creatives was exciting. I got to have a lot of input from concept and layout through to furnishings,” Nepean Inner Designs operator Shirley Gavin said.

“The feedback has been very positive and I’m excited to have been part of this collaboration. Being a finalist at the Sydney Design Awards is just an added bonus!”

White River Designs and WriteCopy are permanently located at The Creative Fringe in York Road, Penrith.

Class teacher Liz Johnson said the students had a fantastic week learning about all things related to science.

“We were very fortunate in that we were given a $5,000 grant by Inspiring Australia and a $200 grant from the Science Teachers Association,” she explained.

“We had a Kindergarten to Year 6 Science Fair on Tuesday and then children learnt about cooking, gardening – we had a horticulturalist visit, and the Country Women’s Association.

“They learnt that science is not just about doing experiments in a test tube but is instead all around us.”

As a particularly special treat, Year 5 and Year 6 students were taken to the University of Western Sydney Hawkesbury Campus to learn about reptiles and get up close and friendly with the creatures.

The students were also paid a visit by Year 10 students from Jamison High School who shared their experiences of high school science.

Students were able to hold reptiles “The children had the full experience of what science is like in secondary and tertiary education and they absolutely loved it,” Ms Johnson said.

Extension needed It is deeply concerning that the Federal Government has not yet confirmed whether the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse will be granted an extension to its 2015 deadline. There have been more than 2,200 abuse victims who have already provided evidence and it is estimated that there are at least 3,000 others who are waiting and deserve the opportunity to also tell their stories – but that can’t happen unless the timeframe is extended.

The magnitude of abuse and the tragic impacts are being revealed by the work of the Royal Commission. As someone who has represented hundreds of people who as children suffered serious abuse at the hands of an institution that failed them, I urge the Government to grant the extension of time so that victims who are willing to provide evidence have the opportunity to come forward. This Royal Commission has provided an opportunity to right the wrongs of the past and also highlighted the harm victims have endured and the challenges they have faced.

The Royal Commission must continue past its 2015 deadline to allow all victims to have their voices heard.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has had his name cleared over rape allegations dating back several decades. media moving forward. I do find it interesting though that very little has been said of this story since it came out last Thursday. That’s actually the way it should be, but so rarely is in Australian politics.

Cycling clarification A few weeks ago I read a letter in your newspaper from a local resident speaking about how she almost hit a cyclist on Victoria Bridge. The cyclist wobbled off her bike and fell onto the roadway, it seemed. Problem for me with this is that the cyclist should not have been on his/her bicycle in the first place. There are clear signs at the entrances to Victoria Bridge saying that riders should dismount and walk their bike across the bridge.

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Council will write to the Roads and Maritime Services requesting that they investigate the potential for dual right-turns out of Glenmore Parkway onto Mulgoa Road after Busways raised concerns about traffic queuing and resultant delays to bus services in Glenmore Park. Busways said that the delays are being experienced because the right hand turn is currently only a single lane.

Costs vary and are determined by assessment with contributions negotiated individually.

The Crown Lands Public Reserves Management Fund Program is administered by the Department of Trade and Investment. It provides financial support for the maintenance and improvement of public reserves.

In March 2014 Council applied for a grant under the program to rehabilitate and revegetate along informal tracks at Castlereagh Reserve. The area of the reserve is 17.7 hectares.

The vegetation within the reserve is listed under the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995. It includes both Castlereagh Scribbly Gum Woodland (a vulnerable ecological community) and Cooks River/Castlereagh Ironbark Forest (an endangered ecological community).

Council has been awarded $10,000 for the project.

With business more competitive than ever these days, owners have seen the need to review their pricing strategies and adopt a more strategic approach to how they charge their customers.

While there’s no such thing as the perfect price, there’s often room for improvement. Here are some points to consider when reviewing your pricing strategy: Covering costs: Make sure you’ve got accurate figures for all the costs involved in making your products as well as overheads like staffing and premises.

Your profit margin: How much would

make the sale worthwhile for you? Profit margin is the percentage of the selling price that turns into profit.

Pricing models: For a cost-plus pricing model, you simply add your profit margin to your costs to arrive at a price. For value-based pricing, which approaches pricing from the customer side, you price your product to reflect its value to your customer, rather than the manufacturing cost.

I

t’s said to be one of the most popular and fastest growing sports in the world. Legends Football League, formerly Lingerie Football League, landed in Penrith last summer amidst plenty of fanfare as well as controversy.

The NSW Surge, who went on to win the inaugural competition, called Penrith Stadium home for two games last December.

Fans turned out in their thousands to cheer on the girls in a sport they knew very little about – you could say they embraced it for what it was.

However, fans will be shocked to learn that the LFL and NSW Surge have decided not to return to Penrith this year but instead will play three home matches out of Pirtek Stadium in Parramatta.

Speaking exclusively with the Weekender, Founder and Chairman of LFL Global, Mitchell Mortaza, said the switch to Parramatta was purely a business decision, not a personal one.

“While Penrith offered a great first season stadium for the Legends Cup

“Parramatta offers us not only a great

stadium with an ideal location, being central to most of Sydney and its suburbs, but also a legendary stadium within the Australian sporting culture.

“We are excited to be sharing the same home ground as premier sporting clubs such as the Parramatta Eels, Western Sydney Wanderers and Greater Sydney Rams.”

When the LFL announced Penrith as the home of the NSW Surge back in October last year, the announcement caused plenty of controversy among the female community.

While most of the males of Penrith welcomed it on board, many of the female population weren’t as convinced and ticket sales suffered.

Mr Mortaza said poor ticket sales or issues with hiring Sportingbet Stadium weren’t factors in the decision to move to Parramatta.

“It was not that Penrith was not a great stadium for the NSW Surge, it was simply that Pirtek Stadium provided a better opportunity to establish the NSW Surge as a prominent sporting club due to its location, built-in audience and personnel,” he said.

“We would welcome and encourage our Penrith-based Surge fans to make the trip to Parramatta and root for your Legends Cup champion in 2014 and 2015.”

he GWS Giants have announced a partnership with Big Bash League team, Sydney Thunder, to share the club’s training and administration headquarters at Sydney Olympic Park.

The partnership was announced by Sydney Thunder captain Mike Hussey and Giants ruckman Shane Mumford at the Giants Learning Life Centre last week.

Thunder staff and players will be located at the Learning Life Centre during the forthcoming cricket season and the Giants will also provide administrative support for ticketing, membership and merchandise.

The Giants home ground of Spotless Stadium will also host two Big Bash matches featuring the Thunder against Hobart on January 7 and Melbourne on January 17.

“We look forward to having Sydney Thunder playing at Spotless Stadium and being part of our club during the cricket season,” Giants Chief Executive, David Matthews said.

“We believe this is a great example of collaboration between sporting clubs in western Sydney and will have benefits for everyone including the fans.”

Although both are professional athletes, they fit their training load around work and study.

Forrest is a physiotherapist with Penrith Physio Sports Centre and an ambassador for the Luke Priddis Foundation, while Appleton is studying Occupational Therapy at the University of Western Sydney.

They are also both members of the local Panthers Triathlon Club (PTC).

“We have great athletes of all abilities at PTC, and are extremely proud of Andrea and Sam who are great ambassadors for our club and community,” Panthers Tri Club President, Chris Joseph said.

“Before embarking on the pro ranks they were our club champions in the 2012/13 season, and they’ve both just gone from strength to strength.”

The 1.9km swim takes place in Tremblant Lake, followed by a one-loop, 90km bike through Mont Tremblant’s mountains.

Athletes will then embark on the 21.1km half marathon.

wo local triathletes are on their way to Canada after qualifying to represent Australia at the 2014 Ironman 70.3 World Championship next month.

Held next Sunday, September 7, Andrea Forrest and Sam Appleton will have the opportunity to mix it up with the world’s top 35 professional triathletes.

Both are in with a chance of a podium finish, which would win them a share of the $250,000 prize pool.

“This is a huge opportunity for me, particularly at this point in my professional career,” Forrest said.

“Training has been going well through winter and the recent opening of Atmosphere Health and Fitness Club has been a huge advantage, even enabling me to train on the race course via the Computrainer indoor cycling technology.”

Appleton is highly accomplished at this distance, securing a number of podium finishes over the past 12 months. He is keen to replicate his success in Canada.

he Western Sydney Wanderers roster for the upcoming 2014/15 A-League season is near complete after last week’s signing of Nigerian defender Seyi Adeleke to a one-year deal.

The Lagos-born left-footer will arrive in the country next month after spending the beginning of his professional career in Italy and Switzerland following his signing with Italian giant SS Lazio in 2009.

Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said the signing of the 22-year-old left-back fills out this season’s foreign player contingent but also highlights the club’s rich multicultural diversity.

“It is great to finalise our foreign player contingent with the signing of another young and versatile player,” he said.

“We operate in a global marketplace and Adeleke’s signing indicates that we will look at all opportunities to improve our squad to truly reflect the region we live in.

The Emu Plains Glenmore Park Lions Junior AFL club have plenty of reasons to celebrate, on the back of a stellar effort both on and off the field they have been awarded the AFL Greater Sydney Juniors 2014 Club of the Year.

Club President Sean Hogan was thrilled with the result and proud of the achievements his club have made in such a short amount of time.

“This was an amazing result. Over the past two years our club has gone from strength to strength growing to become one of the largest clubs in our region. In 2012 EPGP Lions had 107 registered players and has grown to have 216 registered players this year,” he said.

Nigeria’s national youth teams over the years, will link up with the Wanderers in the coming weeks to commence preparations for the start of the A-League season.

NRL video referees may no longer be at the actual ground.

NRL bosses confirmed on Wednesday that the league would undertake a feasibility study into a Central Command Centre where “in game” decisions can be made.

It is possible the Centre could be trialled as early as midway through next season.

Ultimately, the Centre could include a social media hub so that decision making is quickly communicated to fans and members.

The NRL is developing a blueprint to improve refereeing after various controversial decisions this year.

At Windsor the Mixed Pairs winners were Colleen Hudson and Leo Vanderburg defeating Kaye Quinton and Kane Anderson and at Wallacia the Minor Pairs winners were Mick Dawson and Brian Garten after they defeated Trevor Roots and Brian McGlashan.

WS Giants Chief Executive David Matthews has been appointed Vice President of the Sydney Business Chamber’s Western Sydney Regional Advisory Committee.

Following Wednesday’s announcement, Matthews said he welcomed the opportunity to help advance the interests of western Sydney through his new role.

“Western Sydney is one of the most important regions of Australia and the Giants want to play an increasing advocacy role to highlight the opportunities and needs of its communities,” he said.

Before joining the Giants as CEO in 2011, Matthews was previously an AFL Executive for 10 years. He said the Giants and AFL were actively investing in the region by creating jobs and connecting with local communities.

“We want to create a great club like no other that delivers the best family entertainment and wins premierships but also enriches the lives of the people in western Sydney and broader communities,” Mr Matthews said.

“Obviously it’s been a very tough week for Jon. We want to give him some security and certainty as he undergoes surgery and rehab so he can look forward to a bright future with the Giants,” he said.

“If anything, his injury setback only made us more determined to secure him.

He’s not only a great talent but a fine young man and one of the most popular players at the club.”

While on a sad note, premiership defenders Josh Hunt and Stephen Gilham have confirmed they’ll both retire from AFL football following this weekend’s final regular season game against the Western Bulldogs.

Hunt joined the Giants for the 2014 season after playing 198 games and two premierships at Geelong.

29-year-old Gilham has played 15 games for the Giants over two seasons after being part of the Hawthorn premiership side in 2008.

“It’s been a great journey for me over the past 12 years,” Gilham said.

AROUND THE GROUNDS BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers women’s Waratah Championship League side have won their first finals game, defeating Illawarra last weekend 87-65.

Alicia Poto was Penrith’s best on court scoring 22 points and 6 assists. The Panthers will now take on the hugely talented Hornsby Spiders who finished the year as minor premiers. If Penrith manage to beat Hornsby in Maitland this Saturday afternoon they’ll win a place in the 2014 Grand Final.

BASKETBALL: Congratulations to Penrith basketballers Angus Brandt, Ben Kearins and Nic Pozoglou who have each been named on the Sydney Kings roster for the 2014/15 NBL season. Brandt is the only full-time player amongst the trio with Kearins earning a development spot and Pozoglou a train-on role. New Sydney Kings head coach Damian Cotter believes both Pozoglou and Kearins each have legitimate chances of developing into full-time players down the track.

AFL: The Penrith Rams have lost their final game of the season going down to the St George Dragons 86-29. It was a horrible season for the Division 1 Rams who won just two games all year to finish in last place.

Meanwhile, the Penrith Ramettes won their elimination semi-final against the UTS Shamrocks 54-26. The Ramettes will now play their arch nemesis in the Wollongong Saints this Saturday afternoon for a spot in the 2014 Grand Final.

ICE HOCKEY: The Penrith Phantoms have won their second last game of the year defeating the Canterbury Falcons 4-2. This Sunday the Phantoms will take on the Canterbury Ice Cubes in their final game of the year before playoffs begin next weekend. Meanwhile Penrith’s other Division 2 team, Phantom Menace, narrowly lost their last game of the season to the Canterbury Chiefs 3-2. The one-point loss, which leaves the Menace in last place, means they’ll be relegated to Division 3 for the 2015 season.

GRIDIRON: The Nepean Ducks have lost their opening game of the Gridiron NSW senior season, going down to the Sutherland Seahawks 50-26.

ROLLER DERBY: The Western Sydney Rollers season finally got underway last weekend with an influx of new recruits.

In the opening bout, the 2013 champions Hellfire Honeys went down to the Blue Mountains Free Sisters 159-116. While in the night’s main bout, the Circuit Break-Hers hammered the 2012 champion Zombees 260-72.

fter being cruelly relegated to Division 2 just a week out from the start of the NSW Ice Hockey 2014 season, the Penrith Phantoms have had the last say by winning their way back into the top pool of competitors.

The Phantoms, who play out of Penrith Ice Palace, have spent the entire season in Division 2 after they were forced to give up their spot in Division 1 to the Sydney Bears, who beat them in a relegation game a week out from their 2014 season opener.

The Weekender broke the heartbreaking story back in March with many of the Phantoms players including inspirational captain George Kozumplik “gutted” at the decision.

However despite the unfortunate blow, the Phantoms banded together to put the off-ice dramas behind them to become minor premiers of the Division 2 competition.

The top of the table finish means the Phantoms are officially welcomed back into Division 1 for the 2015 season.

“Our first priority was to win the minor premiership, in fact it was more of a priority

“The finals start next weekend and we’ll take it as it comes and obviously do our best to win but in our eyes we’ve already won because we get to move back up.

“Winning the whole thing will just be icing on the cake but the guys won’t be too worried if we don’t win it all because our main priority was to try and move up.”

This Sunday the Phantoms will play their final game of the regular season against the fifth placed Canterbury Ice Cubes.

Along with a huge range of caravan and camping products on display, the show has a great range of activities for the whole family to enjoy.

The Penrith Caravan, Camping and Holiday Expo takes place over three days, Friday, September 5 to Sunday, September 7 at Penrith Panthers from 9am-5pm Friday and Saturday and 4pm Sunday.

Tickets are $10 for Adults, $6 Concession and children under 16 are free with an accompanying adult.

camping visitors to NSW, 80 per cent are engaged in holiday and leisure activities that bring significant benefits for the broader tourism economy of regions,” Ms Gray said.

“These results prove that caravan and camping is fast becoming a preferred holiday option in NSW, particularly for families who make up the largest group (34.4 per cent) of caravan and camping visitors to NSW. “Caravan and camping visitors are contributing $1.9 billion to the NSW economy and spending an average of 4.7 nights which is 1.4 nights longer than the average for visitors to the state.

“In the last year the sector has lifted its economic contribution by more than 17 per cent.”

The Association has a year round program of activity to help drive growth in the sector.

The Penrith Expo is coming up next weekend so everyone can learn more about the sector.

It’s a perfect showcase of all aspects of the caravan and camping industry – with everything on show in one location.

“Caravan and camping is now experiencing significant growth – punching well above its weight and making it a major contributor to the NSW economy,” CCIA NSW CEO, Lyndel Gray said “In the year to December 2013, close to 2.4 million people stayed in commercial caravan or camping accommodation in this state, delivering more than 11 million visitor nights.

“This is an additional 303,000 visitors to commercial caravan parks on the previous year, and an additional 727,000 visitor nights.”

Ms Gray said these figures, which have come out of the recent release of the National Visitor Survey, represented an impressive overall growth of visitors, up 15 per cent and visitor nights, up seven per cent.
