enrith Council has issued only “a few” infringements to people who walk their dogs without leads – despite local residents blatantly ignoring the regulations each week in the Penrith area. Even with a number of off-leash areas being

implemented across the city, residents continue to allow their dogs to walk around streets and parks without leads, putting children and other pets at risk of severe injury. Infringement notices can be issued by Penrith Council under State Government laws, but it appears Council is lacking bite on the issue. A Council spokesperson said each year there are hardly any infringements issued.

“Our officers proactively patrol for dogs off leashes at all times. We have given only a few infringements for ‘dog not under effective control’ in the past 12 months,” he said. “We find that educational warnings, quite often just verbal, usually fixes things. On average, we would issue several educational warnings daily.” Story continues on » p. 3

Unions angry at proposed changes But Lindsay MP Fiona Scott comes out swinging as political scene heats up

Story continues from » p. 1 NSW law says dogs in public need to be on a lead and under control of a competent person at all times. Glenmore Park resident Bec Lynch has two Australian bulldogs – six-year-old Sandy and nine-month-old Bae – and keeps them on a leash at all times in public, for everyone’s safety. “Sandy is very obedient but off the leash she is unpredictable, not aggressive, but could run off into traffic which is traumatising for everyone involved,” she said. “I know she’s a great dog and wouldn’t harm anybody, but I’m not going to put her or anyone in that position to have to come across her when she’s not restrained.” Ms Lynch has two young children, Darcy, 8 and Lexi, 5, and said it’s unnerving to see dogs not on leads. “I have seen dogs off the lead, and there is that element of unpredictability when you don’t know what another dog is like,” she said.

Greg Livingston (fourth from left) and fellow protesters outside Fiona Scott’s office They swore no public servant’s workplace rights would be taken away as they would remain in place via departmental policy. The concern for Mr Livingston and the unions is that internal policy can change at any time, and it is not protected in the same way as an enterprise bargaining agreement. Ms Scott was not in her office at the time

of the protest on Tuesday, but said it was just the “same old dirty tricks” by the union movement. “There must be an election in the air with the regular union cronies in search of relevance in a world that has left them behind,” she said. “In doing so, they are drawing long bows and using old reports to try and scare and deceive the community.”

ranebrook resident Greg Livingston is worried about changes to public sector bargaining – changes that unions are calling a ‘threat to national security’. He was part of a rally outside Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott’s High Street office on Tuesday, alongside the Defence engineering and technical workforce and the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union (AMWU). Mr Livingston, an Explosive Armaments Technician at the Australian Defence Force’s branch at Orchard Hills, has huge concerns over the Federal Government’s changes to enterprise agreements that he said will strip his negotiated rights, and rewrite them into Defence policy. “It means they can change what I do, when I do it and how I do it at any given notice. To say I don’t want to do that, they can say ‘there’s the door’,” he said. Almost three weeks ago, 13 government agencies went on strike against Government changes to enterprise agreements. Reports at the time stated that the Government wanted a range of conditions to be removed from enterprise agreements to make them shorter and simpler.

t 6.08pm on Monday night, the Transport Management Centre issued an email to the media saying that no trains were running between Parramatta and Blacktown due to urgent track repairs. At the height of the peak period, it was a nightmare for Sydney Trains and the thousands of people trying to get home from work. Despite being able to tell the media what was going on, Sydney Trains apparently found it impossible to relay the message to the very people affected by the incident: their passengers. For people travelling from the City to Penrith on the Blue Mountains train that leaves Central at around 6pm, their journey didn’t end until almost two and a half hours later. But during that time, just one announcement was made to the passengers. It came at around 6.45pm and went something along the lines of: “It appears there must be a signal failure, but I don’t have any information”. For the next hour and a half, the train went slower than a Clive Palmer power walk. No further announcements, no updates, no information. Of course, the Transport Management Centre were still informing the media of what was happening, issuing another update at 6.37pm to confirm trains were running again but would operate slowly for the next few hours. The story on that 6pm City to Penrith service was repeated across other services trying to make it west, according to people on those trains. In truth a lengthy delay on a Monday night is not the worst situation a Penrith

train commuter will face on any given journey. Over-crowding means that for a lot of people, the trip to Parramatta or the City and back again is made sitting on the floor or steps, or standing. That’s of course if you managed to get a parking spot at Penrith Station in the first place – they’re generally all gone by 7am, pushing people onto Sydney’s already congested roads or forcing them to leave earlier, which often means less time spent with family. Fixing Sydney’s transport system is a long and painful process. But there’s two things that can be implemented today that could at least assist passengers when incidents like Monday’s delays happen. The first is to communicate. Surely it is not that difficult to make clear, constant announcements to passengers when there is a significant delay. The second is to waive the fare.

Commuters getting off trains at Penrith on Monday were dealt one final insult when their Opal card was charged the full amount. If you’re not delivering an acceptable service, you don’t deserve to charge people full fare. On March 23, Transport Minister Andrew Constance issued a glowing press release with survey results showing train commuters had 90 per cent overall satisfaction. I have no idea how that survey is undertaken or implemented but the results don’t line up with the feedback I receive week in, week out in relation to the way Sydney Trains operates, from its communication with passengers through to over-crowding, a lack of parking at stations and delays to services. Mr Constance issued another release in early March saying that a new “nerve centre” was being built to reduce train commuter delays. “Knowledge from across the globe has been sourced, from London, Hong Kong and Tokyo, to ensure the design incorporates the latest technology that will improve train services for customers,” the press release boasted. A nerve centre? Really? The jury’s out on that $276 million investment, but let’s see what happens. At least they’re trying – one has to remember the mess the current State Government inherited. But that excuse can’t last forever. The statistics released by Sydney Trains and the State Government about customer satisfaction simply don’t seem to match the lived experience. It’s time to get real about fixing what is a frustrating, never-ending problem.

enrith Council has suggested that the planning proposal for a new ambulance ‘superstation’ in Penrith could be approved this week. The superstation is part of a $150 million Sydney Ambulance Metropolitan Infrastructure Strategy from the State Government, that includes the construction of five new stations across Sydney. Late last month, Health Minister Jillian Skinner announced the commencement of construction at the Blacktown site, with construction already underway at the Bankstown, Kogarah and Liverpool sites. The Penrith superstation at 141 to 152 High Street has been behind the eight ball, with the proposal not yet even approved by Penrith Council. A Penrith Council spokesperson said they hit a few speed bumps, but approval is likely to be given within the week. “It took a bit longer than we would have liked due to the complicated intersection and we had to run some things past the RMS,” the spokesperson said. The intersection in question is the traffic lights where High Street meets the divided Great Western Highway. Construction on the Penrith station is

Ms Skinner said the new operating model for NSW Ambulance paramedics is to ensure they are strategically placed to meet the emergency medical needs across metropolitan areas. “These superstations will ensure paramedics are better equipped to meet current and projected demand on paramedic resources,” she said. “The SAMIS program marks the most significant investment in Sydney’s paramedic infrastructure by the NSW Government.”

eteran mental health was high on the agenda during a visit to ‘The Train’ in St Marys on Monday. During a tour of the local area ahead of ANZAC Day, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Dan Tehan and Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott spoke one-on-one with veterans at ‘The Train’ about issues most important to them. ‘The Train’ operates as the Vets Support Centre run by the local Vietnam Veterans Association, supported by the St Marys RSL sub-Branch.

Mr Tehan said it was great to have the opportunity to meet the veterans who are part of ‘The Train’ and hear their stories. “While there, I was briefed on the services they provide and heard some moving personal accounts. The work of these dedicated volunteers is truly inspirational,” he said. Ms Scott said the ongoing success of ‘The Train’ is a credit to St Marys RSL, the sub-Branch and the Vietnam Veterans Association. “Together they provide important services across western Sydney,” Ms Scott said.

Shortcut might be axed Councillor suggests popular turn into Nepean Village should be cut off DALE DRINKWATER

ustomers could soon be stopped from sneaking across lanes on Woodriff Street into the Nepean Village car park if Councillor Bernard Bratusa gets his way. At a recent Council meeting, Cr Bratusa requested that the Local Traffic Committee look into extending the median strip on Woodriff Street, so south-bound customers cannot turn across northbound traffic into the centre. Cr Bratusa said it is a safety issue with a second set of traffic entering and exiting from the next car park south where the Reject Shop and First Choice Liquor is located. “The current median strip is not definitive in terms of permitting traffic to turn right from Woodriff Street into the car park of Nepean Village,” he said. “It is an accident waiting to happen. Making the median strip longer and preventing access will stop motorists from putting themselves in danger.” Extending the median strip would prohibit customers from driving around it and across the double lines, which plenty of drivers have been doing.

A car makes the questionable turn into Nepean Village. Inset: Councillor Bernard Bratusa. Main Photo: Megan Dunn Despite making it that extra bit difficult for locals to access Nepean Village, Councillor Bratusa hopes surrounding businesses would support his request. “I would like to think Nepean Village management would agree the safety of its shoppers is paramount,” he said. Alex Wright, Marketing Manager of Vicinity Centres, which owns Nepean Village, did not disclose how extending

the median strip would affect customers, but indicated that Nepean Village supported the idea. “The safety of our customers is a top priority for Nepean Village, and we welcome the interest taken by the Penrith City Council,” she said. The plan has received a mixed response on social media. Have your say at www. facebook.com/westernweekender.

Extension to Drillcore Library Londonderry’s best kept secret, the W B Clark Geoscience Centre, now has the capacity to provide the state’s drill core storage needs for the next 20 years. On Tuesday, extensions to the Centre’s Drillcore Library were unveiled, that has increased its capacity to store 30 per cent more drill samples of sediment and rock. Dr Chris Yeats, Executive Director of the Geological Survey of NSW, said the new Library will increase storage from 1200 kilometres to 1875 kilometres of drill core. “And that should last us another 20 years,” he said. Dr Yeats said the Library also provides a new storage facility for naturally occurring radioactive materials, and now holds the $1 million automated drill core logging system, the HyLogger. The HyLogegr creates continuous full colour high-resolution images of core samples and identifies the minerals contained in the drill core. Drill samples currently stored at the Library are extremely valuable to the State’s exploration industry, with a replacement value of around $300 million. Minister for Industry, Resources and Energy, Anthony Roberts, officially opened the $5 million extension he said would help identify potential new deposits and drive job-creating discoveries in the future. “Analysing drill core is a key activity of the Geological Survey’s work in support of the State’s mineral explorers,” he said. – Dale Drinkwater

ANZAC Day

Students show respect for our fallen Legacy lives on: Thousands attend special ANZAC service to pay tribute to those who fought for us JADE ALIPRANDI

ver 2,000 students filled the stands of Penrith Paceway on Tuesday, for the annual Students ANZAC Service, organised by the Penrith RSL sub-Branch. 43 local schools came to the service to remember those who have served, and those who are currently serving for our country. While braving the heat, the students sat in silence as the service was carried out. Event Organiser at Penrith RSL subBranch, Peter Todd, said he was proud to be part of such an event. “It’s the best thing that the area could ever have – to have students from around the town all come together to realise, understand and remember what ANZAC Day is all about is fantastic,” he told the Weekender. “It’s the most students I have ever seen in one area.” Mr Todd was in the Defence Force for 20 years, never having had the opportunity to serve overseas, but said the day is an important one as his father served in World War II. “I’ve only missed one ANZAC Day since I

Photos: Megan Dunn was little so to now be even more involved with it and organising this event, it gives me a great sense of pride,” he said. “It’s also great to see so many students here as it shows how many young people really want to show what they think of ANZAC Day.” The service was held prior to ANZAC Day on April 25, and usually is, as the students will be on school holidays on the day.

“Students might not be able to get to a service so to hold this one provides them with an opportunity to remember in the company of their peers,” Mr Todd said. The Students ANZAC Service dates back to the 1960s and is run by the students. Kingswood High School was invited to have their students run the service with Holly Burcher and Kuini Vaagaau MCs of Tuesday’s event.

Fire

Family left with nothing after blaze JADE ALIPRANDI

he Blackwell family are picking up the pieces after the St Marys home they were living in was destroyed by fire last weekend. Nine people managed to make the lucky escape from the home on Nancy Street on Saturday night. Local police officers, who were doing routine patrols in the area at about 6.45pm, noticed the house well alight. Police ensured everyone made it out of the blaze unscathed, including five children under five-years-old. A litter of nine newborn puppies were also rescued from the home by neighbours. It took over a dozen firefighters to extinguish the fire as clouds of smoke continued to flood the area. “During the incident, a Fire and Rescue NSW male employee was injured,” a police spokesperson said. The man was taken to Nepean Hospital after he received an electric shock. Passers-by and neighbours were on the forefront to help, including next door neighbour Rosemari Lynch. “I was on my way home and I thought it was my house,” Ms Lynch told the Weekender. “The thick black smoke was pouring out

T

of the house, which is so close to mine, so I was just lucky the wind was blowing away from my place. “Everyone that helped in the situation did so well and it’s very lucky that everyone was able to make it out.” A crime scene has been established and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the blaze are continuing. Most valuable and sentimental items were destroyed during the fire, with a fundraising page set up for Matt and Donna Blackwell. Almost $2000 was donated in one day, with a range of donations of clothes and toys also offered to the young family. To donate to the family in their time of need, visit www.gofundme.com/ p3x4bjzt.

L AW a n d O R D E R From The Courts: Your Complete Legal Wrap COMPILED BY ALENA HIGGINS. OUR COURT REPORTING IS SPONSORED BY LOCAL LAW FIRM COMPLETE LEGAL & CONVEYANCING.

Man caught drink driving was simply moving his car

A P-plater caught drink driving after moving his “awkwardly” parked car 100 metres down the street has had his conviction quashed. Joshua Bede Martin, 20, appeared before Penrith District Court on Monday where he successfully appealed his three-month driving disqualification for low-range drink driving. The court heard Mr Martin had just left a street party when he was pulled over by police in South Windsor at 3.35am on Sunday, February 7 after becoming concerned that his car was “parked awkwardly in front of the neighbour’s house”. Mr Martin told the court he had no intention of driving a long distance, but was rather “in a sense rolling it down the street” to a more appropriate spot. “I have no idea what the police were doing there,” Mr Martin said. The court heard police patrolling the area spotted Mr Martin’s headlights and became suspicious when they saw the vehicle stop soon after. Officers found Mr Martin in the driver’s seat, shirtless and appearing anxious. He was given a two-year good behaviour bond in lieu of his disqualification.

Judge gives man with string of offences one last chance

A seasoned driver with a string of traffic offences has narrowly escaped with his licence after successfully appealing his latest conviction. Alan James Shepherd fronted Penrith District Court on Tuesday in a bid to contest the severity of his sentence, which saw him disqualified from driving after being nabbed travelling 20km/h over the speed limit while on a good behaviour bond licence. Mr Shepherd’s lawyer told the court his client would be sacked and suffer financial hardship if his suspension was upheld.

He said Mr Shepherd had held his licence for almost 48 years and had driven the equivalent of 23 times around Australia, which made him “more prone to detection”. However, Judge Helen Syme was scathing of Mr Martin’s extensive traffic record. “Your attention is starting to wane,” she said. “This is a matter of road safety, not just for you, but for all drivers on the road.” Judge Syme granted the appeal with a “great deal of reluctance” but warned him it was his last chance. He was given a two year good behaviour bond.

The game is up for man trying to sell items to pawnbroker

A plan to make money illegally on the side has backfired for Marcus Heather. Mr Heather pleaded guilty to making false statements to a pawnbroker at Penrith Local Court on Wednesday. The court heard Mr Heather sold a number of X-box games and DVDs that didn’t belong to him. “I’m very sorry, I stuffed up. It won’t happen again,” Mr Heather told the Court. He was fined $1,000 and ordered to pay compensation. “I hope you’ve learnt your lesson,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell said.

“You won’t get lucky twice”: Judge’s warning to woman

Leasa Louise Koss has been placed on a nine-month good behaviour bond after pleading guilty on Wednesday to driving under the influence of drugs. Penrith Local Court heard Ms Koss had only held her licence for a short time when she was found driving with cannabis in her blood at St Marys on December 4. Magistrate Roger Clisdell reminded Ms Koss that cannabis can linger in the system for more than six weeks and warned her to stay out of trouble.

“Stay off the drugs,” he said. “You won’t get lucky twice.”

No more brownie points: Good record helps man’s case

An almost unblemished traffic record has seen Andrew Leitch walk away from Penrith Local Court with his licence intact on Wednesday. Mr Leitch, who pleaded guilty to lowrange drink driving, said he was “stupid” to get behind the wheel. “I thought I was alright, but obviously I wasn’t,” he said. Magistrate Roger Clisdell said Mr Leitch had only committed two minor traffic infringements in 23 years. “Your good traffic record comes to your rescue today,” Magistrate Clisdell said, but “you’ve used up all your brownie points.” He was given a nine-month good behaviour bond.

Man placed on good behaviour bond after turning to drugs

Tynenn Neasmith has been placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond after pleading guilty to driving with drugs in his system. Mr Neasmith told Penrith Local Court on Wednesday he had turned to drugs after hitting a “rough patch” following a back injury that cost him his job. “It was very stupid,” he said. “I’ve seeked (sic) help from my doctor to help me give up that substance.”

Case adjourned so accused can seek legal advice

Alarna Green fronted Penrith Local Court on Wednesday charged with cultivating a prohibited plant. Her case was adjourned until April 20 to seek legal advice. She is yet to enter a plea.

Man lucky to avoid jail; won’t be so lucky next time

A young man has narrowly avoided jail time after being caught driving while

disqualified. Penita Toafa appeared before Penrith Local Court on Wednesday where he was fined $2,000 and given an eight-month suspended jail sentence. “You are now serving a jail offence in the community,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell said. “You drive again, you’re going to jail.”

Repeat offender was found with drugs and a bong

A repeat drug offender has been hit with a fine and stern warning after pleading guilty to drug possession. Joel Alex Kevin Ordasi fronted Penrith Local Court on Wednesday charged with possession of cannabis and a bong. “This is the last time you will be dealt with by fine only,” Magistrate Roger Clisdell said. He was fined $500 for cannabis possession and $250 for possession of the bong.

$500 fine for man found with weapons and drugs

A man found in possession of cannabis, knuckle dusters and a knife has been placed on a six-month good behaviour bond. Robert Gowenlock, 20, faced Penrith Local Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to the charges. The court heard Mr Gowenlock had recently purchased an investment townhouse in Glenmore Park and had ceased the use of drugs. He was convicted and fined $500.

Tough lesson for drunk man

A man who damaged property at Mount Riverview when “black-out drunk” has been fined $1,400. Joshua David Shayle fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to the charge. “I pretty much don’t drink anymore,” he said. He was fined $1,000 for ‘damage property’ and $200 each for two counts of ‘enter enclosed land’.

Woman indecently assaulted on Penrith-bound train

A man has been charged after a woman was indecently assaulted on a train this week. At about 5.50pm on Monday, April 4, the express westbound train was travelling towards Penrith. A 28-year-old man allegedly attempted to initiate a conversation with a 26-yearold female. The offender continued to invade the victim’s personal space to the point where she was indecently assaulted. A witness on the train managed to call the police while the train was still heading to Penrith. When the passengers arrived at Penrith, the witness alerted security to the incident, who then detained the man until police arrived.

Police were called and issued the man with the infringement notice for

Penrith: ‘Ice’ user attacks two security guards at train station

Two security officers were brutally attacked by a man in the early hours of Sunday morning at Penrith Railway Station. At about 1.30am on Sunday, April 3, a 42-year-old man approached a security officer who was standing near the taxi rank at Penrith Railway Station and allegedly yelled a defamatory racial slur at the guard. The man punched him in the face and pulled his shirt. The offender then approached a security guard who was seated in a nearby vehicle. When the guard heard a knock on the window he opened the door. He was punched several times in the face. Witnesses ran to the man’s aid which caused the offender to flee the scene. Police were able to located the 42-year-old in a nearby carpark. When he was taken to Penrith Police Station, he admitted to being under the influence of the drug ‘ice’. He was charged with ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

Section 10 dismissals If you have ever been charged with a criminal offence or certain traffic offences, you may have heard the term ‘Section 10 Dismissal’ used to describe a possible punishment you could receive. This allows a Court, upon a person being found guilty of an offence, to dismiss the charge and to not record a conviction. This type of punishment can apply to a range of offences including some traffic offences (such as driving under the influence), relatively unserious offences such as minor assaults, minor theft offences, and some drug offences, for example. A Section 10 Dismissal is rarely available to people who commit serious offences or multiple offences of the same nature. In considering whether to grant a Section 10 Dismissal, the Court will consider things like the offender’s character (and any character references that are put before the Court), age, health, the seriousness of the offence, and any extenuating circumstances.

There are typically three types of Section 10s. The first is the dismissal of the charge without a conviction with no conditions. The second is the dismissal of the charge without a conviction, but requiring the offender to enter into a Good Behaviour Bond. The third is the dismissal of the charge without a conviction on the condition that the offender enter into an agreement to participate in an intervention program (such as drug and alcohol counselling). The benefits of a Section 10 conviction are that the offender can avoid adverse consequences that may have otherwise stemmed from having a criminal record. Examples include the avoidance of a licence disqualification, the avoidance of any restrictions on travel that can arise out of some certain criminal offences, the avoidance of any impact of a criminal record on a person’s employment, and the avoidance of having to disclose the offence. If you might be an appropriate fit for a Section 10 Dismissal, contact our team today to discuss.

Arts funding

$20

World class cities are supported by arts and cultural facilities – creating a vibrant cultural life. As our population, and the region we serve grows, we need ongoing investment to meet community aspirations, cultural appetite and retain artistic potential. Penrith has rich history with the performing arts and today that community continues to grow, however that growth is being stymied by a disparity in funding. Western Sydney receives only one per cent of Commonwealth arts funding and 5.5 per cent of State Arts, Heritage and Events funding. Council invests a significant amount of funds to ensure the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, the Penrith Conservatorium of Music and the Penrith Regional Gallery and The Lewers Bequest provide an exciting and rewarding cultural experience for residents and visitors to the area. However the Federal and State governments need to provide more funding support. Each attendee at the Sydney Opera House receives a subsidy of $74 in State Government funding whereas

each attendee at Penrith’s major cultural facilities receives $1.50. The Mayoral Arts and Cultural Summit held in late 2015 highlighted the need for more accessible spaces for artists, such as creative hubs and pop-ups across the region to nurture the contribution of arts and cultural expression to our everyday lives. These can have a real, tangible benefit quite quickly and economically. This can be achieved from a grounded and local community perspective through initiatives such as the Magnetic Places program as well as a more visionary city perspective that expresses our identity through enhancements to the public domain like public art, sensitive urban design and architecture, and connections between place and people. Despite the inequities, the region has grown its own unique mass of Cultural Arts activity around its venues, events and organisations. Funding the arts would give opportunity to many more people to create and enjoy.

Education set to be key election issue Labor ramps up unofficial election campaign: Shadow Minister visits Cranebrook to discuss funding DALE DRINKWATER

t was all about early starts last Thursday morning, as one local school highlighted the importance of their early intervention programs. Shadow Education Minister Kate Ellis visited Corpus Christi Catholic School in Cranebrook with Labor candidate for Lindsay, Emma Husar to hear about and see the effects of Government cuts to education. Principal Paul Devlin told the Opposition that schools need sustainable investment, after uncertainty in funding impacted Corpus Christi’s early intervention programs. “It’s very hard to manage schools and school systems with fluctuating funding. We absolutely have to have needs-based funding, but we have to have some certainty,” he said. “We know learning takes time, so when you have a funding program that potentially runs for 18 months, it really makes you worry about how to provide the follow-up required for the most vulnerable children.” In January, Labor announced it would fully fund the six year Gonksi agreement

I

Principal Paul Devlin, Shadow Minister for Education Kate Ellis and Labor candidate for Lindsay Emma Husar at Corpus Christi Catholic School the Abbott Government had reduced to four years, and reinstate $30 billion of school funding that was cut in the 2014 Budget over 10 years.

Ms Ellis said there’s no bigger issue than education, and a Labor plan is in some ways a “referendum” on how schools are funded.

“Studies show if you’re behind at the start, it’s hard to ever get ahead... [But] we can’t invest in a program if they’re just going to be shut off,” she said. “Our commitment is to not just to see through the six year agreement but provide 10 years.” Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott defended the Coalition’s funding commitments, and said funding will increase on 2014-15 levels by 27.3 per cent to $69.4 billion over four years. “That continued growth in Federal funding from a record base level means there is no reason schools won’t be able to continue to support existing initiatives, such as specialist teachers or additional resources,” she said. “The funding will be based on the Government’s Consumer Price Index to ensure it remains sustainable and doesn’t drive Australia into deeper debt.” Meanwhile, Ms Ellis said Malcolm Turnbull’s proposal for Federal Governments to fund private schools and leave funding of public schools up to the states is divisive. “It’s going to create a private vs public issue,” she said. “Whatever school in the country parents decide to send their children to should be a great school.”

In a presentation at a Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce luncheon last Friday, Celestino’s Manager for Stakeholder Relations, Jeremy Spinak, revealed an artist’s impression of the massive multi-storey scientific laboratory. He said it would be a facility of the highest standard. “It will be one of the top two or three scientific buildings in Australia,” Mr Spinak said. “With a six star Green Star rating, the building will be a net energy producer.” He said the building, subject to approval by Penrith Council, will be designed to enable people to walk around and watch scientists as they work. The development application will be lodged in the next couple of months, and Mr Spinak said there will be an official release of the design during the year. Just north of the future western Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek, the 280 hectare Sydney Science Park will focus on research and development to drive innovation.

Malcolm the Easter egg

Stadium strategy is a flop

The more that the electorate is exposed to the blabberings of our PM the more it is becoming convinced that he has no idea what he is doing. Malcolm Turnbull has been an unmitigated failure as PM and he is proving this every time he speaks in public. He has alienated a number of senior Liberals who assisted him when he turned on Tony Abbott, and has even turned to his own wife who is now a member of his “kitchen cabinet”. Lucy Turnbull was never elected to Federal political office so how is it that she is able to preside over matters that could affect national policies? Malcolm Turnbull reminds me of a chocolate Easter egg – good to look at but hollow on the inside. KEITH EVERETT, WERRINGTON COUNTY

I have never seen a bigger waste of money than the $1.2 billion about to be spent to knock down and re-build a perfectly good stadium at Moore Park (Editor’s Desk, Weekender March 31). I always thought Stuart Ayres was a fine local member but seeing this extraordinary waste of money is giving me second thoughts. I accept that we need better stadium facilities for sporting events, but fans obviously want to attend matches in their local area. The money would be far better spent upgrading the grounds people actually want to go to. ROBERT, VIA EMAIL

Seniors honoured Penrith MP Stuart Ayres this week presented the Penrith 2016 NSW Seniors Local Achievement Awards, in recognition of the enormous contribution these seniors make to the local community. “These awards are the community’s way of saying ‘thank you’ to our local seniors for their enthusiasm and commitment to their community,” Mr Ayres said. The recipients in Penrith, as part of the NSW Seniors Festival, were: • Ron Langley for his dedication to men’s health and wellbeing; • Denis Bainbridge for his commitment to digitising the Glenbrook and District Historical Society records and; • Penrith Hospital Auxiliary for supporting the local community through fund-raising for important hospital and medical equipment.

Scholarship winner Local teacher Asishna Honess, from Penrith High School, has been awarded a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) education scholarship. Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said 73 recipients across the state, such as Ms Honess, will retrain as specialist science or maths teachers and benefit from a $5,000 study grant, study leave and a guaranteed permanent teaching position upon completion. “Increasing the number of trained teachers will provide students with access to quality teaching in critical areas,” he said. The scholarships are part of the focus on STEM studies, where students are encouraged to pursue STEM subjects.

hildren of all ages and abilities will have their own spot to play when ‘Livvi’s Place’ playground is opened in Jordan Springs later this year. The social inclusion project has been the focus of the team at the Touched By Olivia Foundation for over five years, with the nod of approval to begin building the site given after the sod was turned last Friday, April 1. Jordan Springs is set to be the 20th playground to be opened by the Touched By Olivia Foundation. The Foundation was founded by Justine Perkins in 2007 after her daughter, Olivia, passed away at eight-years-old due to a rare illness, and has since seen several inclusive playgrounds and coffee shops opened in her memory around Australia. “It’s a legacy we are building to help bring communities together as well as children, regardless of their abilities and disabilities,” Ms Perkins said. “The Foundation and the process of opening these parks is really rewarding – it’s definitely very meaningful work.” Delivered from the Touched By Olivia Foundation by Lendlease, in partnership with Penrith City Council, the area will boast a number of interactive spaces

including a large water play area, a sand pit, trampolines, swings and a range of play equipment. “Play and giving it a go is one of the most important things we can teach our children, so it’s a proud moment when we get to open a new playground,” Ms Perkins said. The playground is expected to open this spring.

Local parents can’t wait. “It’s going to be an amazing thing,” Jordan Springs mother, Kylie Mackey said. “My four-year-old son will be able to play with other kids, which he just loves to do, so we can’t wait.” The playground will be on the Northern Road near Greenwood Parkway, Jordan Springs.

Students lose their locks for a cause Kids from Penrith Anglican College show their community spirit by raising $30,000 for charity “I was quite nervous before I went up but I was also really excited – it was a really good thing for me to do,” Rosie said. “I’m happy to have done it for Brooke and I knew it was something I was going to do all of last year.” Rosie said she hasn’t had short hair since her early days of primary school. “I’ve managed to raise a lot of money and I think I did really well – anything helps for the organisation so I’m happy with my efforts,” she said. The school also raised funds by hosting a sausage sizzle on the day. “We are hoping the funds will continue to grow over the next few weeks,” Ms Crane said.

tudents gathered nervously in anticipation at Penrith Anglican College last week as they waited to take part in the World’s Greatest Shave. Raising over $30,000 for the Leukemia Foundation, this is the second time the school has participated in the fundraiser. Organiser of the day, Dean of Student Wellbeing, Adele Crane, said each of the 18 students participating had a good reason for taking part. “The students have really taken the fundraiser to heart and done it so well,” she said. “It’s fantastic what they have achieved as there are a lot of personal stories and reasons behind why they got involved – it’s really exciting that they have a physical way of expressing their support for the cause.” Year 11 student, Rosie Porter, shaved her waist length hair in memory of her close friend, Brooke, who passed away early last year from brain cancer. She donated her hair to make a wig for other girls undergoing chemotherapy after she saw how much this helped Brooke feel better while undergoing treatment.

opular Penrith restaurant Hog’s Breath Cafe is set to make a move. The steakhouse is planning a switch to Ransley Street, across from Pepper Stadium, ending its association with Westfield Penrith. Hog’s Breath Cafe Penrith’s owner, Ellen Smallacombe, said time was up for the franchise in the busy Riley Street restaurant precinct after a 10 year stint. “We celebrated our 10th birthday in Penrith in November, which also meant our lease was up,” she said. “A lease negotiation that included a 40 per cent increase in rent and a shorter term of just two years made it pretty impossible for us to stay. “A Hog’s Breath Cafe franchise requires a minimum seven year term.” HB Group submitted a development

application to Penrith Council to change the use of the Penrith Paceway site to use as a restaurant and fit out into true Hog’s Breath style. If approved, the $1.1 million fit out will include the extension of the dining room, a verandah bar, a covered pathway and formalised parking. “We’ll be getting landscaping done, creating a new style of Hog’s Breath with a massive outdoor dining area, and a family orientated garden similar to some of the inner city restaurants popping up,” Ms Smallacombe said. Once approved, the build will take approximately 10-12 weeks. Paul Stonebridge, Westfield Penrith’s Centre Manager, wished the Hog’s Breath team well after more than a decade working alongside them. “We wish the team every success as they move into their new restaurant later this year,” he said.

Apps and software that will improve your business

ost of us procrastinate in our business. We all have areas and tasks we prefer to work on, and those less-than-pleasant things are often relegated to the bottom of the pile. So how do you motivate yourself and become more productive? 1. Do tiny things. First write a list of a few things you can do that will make you feel productive. Then look down the list and do something tiny that is related to each of those things. For example, draft some emails, file some documents, do some research for an article (I’m talking to myself here!). This way you will have made a start on each item and the big jobs don’t feel so daunting. 2. Look after your physical needs. Sometimes procrastination stems from lack of energy. So make sure you are getting enough sleep and taking regular breaks. Many proponents of ‘enough sleep’ suggest going to bed between 9pm and 10pm and rising at 5am in order to be the most productive you can be.

3. Focus on the task at hand. As business owners, we are often ‘big picture’ people. We have a vision for our company or a big goal for our project. But this can sometimes cause us to be overwhelmed when we try to get working on the process and tasks. Get in the habit of focusing on the smaller tasks in front of you – break down tasks into smaller chunks if you need to – and then outline the steps, set a deadline for finishing the steps, have a coffee and then do it! 4. Give yourself a break. I’m not talking about having a break from working in this instance, but a break from doing the same tasks. It’s possible that your procrastination is because you are bored. So do something out-of-theordinary and have some fun. 5. Get inspired. Sometimes you just need to stop what you’re doing and get some inspiration, whether that’s from a book, a song, an article, a mentor, a walk in nature or whatever recharges you. What helps you get things done in your business? Tell us via email: news@ westernweekender.com.au.

T

he constant battle to get more out of each day is a challenge all business people experience. We constantly search for ways to be more efficient and savvy in the event that our success compounds over time. Working with many small businesses exposes me to a large amount of methods and applications to make people work more efficiently. Deciding on your chosen products is the big first step. Work with a smartphone you know how to use, or PC you prefer. Here are some tools that you may want to include in your business life to make you more efficient: Dropbox – Is a cloud hard drive software that allows you to store your files online, sync them across different computers, and share them with team members or even across your own computers. You can also back up your files and access them remotely. LastPass – Simple one. It remembers your passwords so that you can focus on the more important things in life. Trello – acts as a board of virtual post-it notes, allowing you to move from content

planning and creation to distribution in a simple, robust, platform. Cards, colour and stickers keep projects organised. Asana – is one of the best productivity tools for task management available. Fortunately it’s absolutely free. From inside the easy-to-navigate dashboard, you can create new tasks, assign them to specific teammates, and monitor the progress of multiple projects. LogMeIn – Using this, important stuff on your PC or Mac can be accessed from your iPad or iPhone. This app really proves its worth as you travel or need to view files remotely. Google Docs – integrates with Gmail and allows you to create, store, and share documents online. Their basic toolset includes a word processing application, spreadsheet, databases, presentations, and more. A very helpful tool to keep documents moving between your team. Another key feature of Google Docs is its ability to enable real-time collaboration. If you’re on a conference call discussing changes to a document, you can make them in real-time and watch every change as it’s made.

school holidays and Christmas for about $4 an hour, that was good money back then,” he said. “It’s not really different today, the boat’s exactly the same, but I remember the clothes back then, the waitresses used to have a long dress as a uniform, they were colonial type, puffy and the collar was frilly.” The Nepean Belle wasn’t very popular in the beginning and when it finally started its engines on the Nepean River, it wasn’t smooth sailing. “To make the slipway they removed 16,000 cubic metres of soil,” he said. “There was one neighbour who totally

opposed the soil coming out of there and she parked her car in front of one of the trucks.” On top of that, it seemed mother nature wanted to stop the Belle from paddling too. “The first couple of years the boat couldn’t get through ‘the narrows’ that are about three kilometres south from the boat ramp,” he said. “It’s a very narrow section, with three rocks that were too close to the surface so the boat couldn’t get through.” Mr Wakeling ran his beloved Belle for 32 years before Mr Bennett and his wife Carol took over ownership in 2013.

After a week of negative headlines for the Penrith Panthers last year, the Weekender’s April 10 edition gave fans something to smile about. Penrith’s youngest fans were treated with a players signing, reminding fans why they support them, and the players why they play. And for a different kind of struggle street, Glenmore Park residents were still not receiving mobile phone reception in certain areas. Federal Member Fiona Scott had applied for three areas in Londonderry, Glenmore Ridge and Mulgoa to receive upgrades to mobile phone towers to ease the problem for the growing areas. One year on, not one of the three locations were funded for upgrades to mobile towers under the first round of the Mobile Blackspot Program. Locals chipped in to help the disaster-struck Vanuatu, that was destroyed by tropical cyclone Pam from March 6 to 22. One was Regentville firefighter, Raymond Irving, who was deployed to the area to help fix schools and improve life for the locals. Mr Irving said locals were very grateful for the help they received over the 10 day deployment, and remained inspirationally positive.

MATCH PREVIEW

COWBOYS

Matt Moylan returned for the Panthers last Sunday

TROY DODDS @troydodds

P

enrith face an enormous test this Saturday night when Johnathan Thurston and his premiership-winning Cowboys ride into Pepper Stadium. While the Panthers have already faced some tough opponents this season in the shape of premiership contenders Canterbury, Brisbane and Parramatta, there is no team in better form at the moment than JT’s Cowboys. Importantly, however, the Panthers are playing really tough, gritty football at the moment and will provide the Cowboys with a test of their own. They’re refusing to give up, and while that has unfortunately resulted in a couple of heartbreaking finishes, it’s also landed two against-the-odds victories.

Every Panthers fan should be proud of how the side came back from the dead to beat Parramatta last Sunday – with the last play of the game no less. The win was on the back of Matt Moylan’s return, with the young skipper adding the attacking flair and safety under the high ball that had been lacking over the first month of the competition. It’s impossible to say the Panthers’ form has been up and down. In fact, it has been largely consistent. The next step is starting to dominate the middle part of matches so a game-winning lead is set up and secured long before the full-time siren. That will come with time, and experience. There’s a few things Penrith need to work on heading into Saturday’s clash with the defending premiers. While the side’s last tackle options were slightly better last weekend with Moylan in the team, they too often garner little result, especially when it’s a bomb to the left winger. It was worse against the Dragons but

even against Parramatta it threatened to be the Panthers’ downfall. Defence also needs to be tightened up – the Panthers miss more tackles than any other side in the competition and an attacking powerhouse like the Cowboys could really expose that on Saturday night. Personally I think Elijah Taylor being in the side and playing big minutes would go some way to fixing that but it’s quite clear there’s other issues at play there. On the positive side of the fence, Moylan will be much better for the run last weekend while Josh Mansour is unquestionably Penrith’s best player at the moment – he is just eating up the metres and scoring tries to boot. When you come up against teams like the Cowboys, it’s easy to be intimidated. But when you go through each position one by one, you start to realise that the Panthers can indeed match what the defending premiers have to offer. While Thurston and Michael Morgan may be more dominant in the halves than

Te Maire Martin and Jamie Soward, the Panthers can match the Cowboys’ backline, forward pack and bench. The Cowboys have been in impressive form but the confidence the Panthers would have gained from last Sunday’s win would be enormous. Some think this will be a blowout but I have a feeling Panthers fans are in for another ride on their edge of their seat. Tip: Panthers by 2

PANTHER RUMBLINGS with the Masked Panther

SALLY’S SHOCK VISIT » There’s not many waves to catch in

Penrith but surfing champion Sally Fitzgibbons isn’t letting that stop her cheer for the Panthers. The fiancé of Trent Merrin, who experienced his first win as a Panther last Sunday, Fitzgibbons made a surprise trip to Pirtek Stadium to cheer on her man. Merrin wasn’t even expecting the surfing stunner to be there but she managed to squeeze some time in between her work commitments. She was looking splendid in a Panthers jumper, but admits there’s still a special spot in her heart for her beloved St George-Illawarra Dragons.

» Michael Jennings could well have been a Panther again in 2016. I’m told that his management sought out Penrith’s interest in bringing Jennings back to the foot of the Mountains when it was clear the Roosters were trying to offload him. The Panthers showed little interest and the local junior ended up at the Eels.

» There’s rumours that James Segeyaro

is ready to talk to other clubs about a deal for next season with indications that he may not be re-signed by the Panthers. The 2014 Hooker of the Year is off contact at the end of the year and is desperate to get back on the field so he can prove his wares to both the Panthers and other clubs. But whether ‘Chicko’ automatically gets the number 9 jumper when he’s fit to return is another thing altogether. Peter Wallace has done an extraordinary job at hooker since taking on the role and would be hard to shift from there at the moment.

» Jamie Soward kicked his 500th career

goal last weekend. That’s despite missing two conversions at the end of the game,

one of which could have proved disastrous had the Panthers not bagged that miracle try on the buzzer. Soward admitted to Fox Sports after the game that he’ll need to work on his goal kicking leading into the match against the Cowboys on Saturday.

» Meanwhile, Soward is looking forward

to taking on Johnathan Thurston this Saturday night. “He’s the best. I like playing against JT... He’s the only player I watch every week. Regardless of where I am I make time to watch JT play,” Soward said.

» Respected local lawyer Mark Mulock

has been appointed as an independent Director on the Panthers Group Board for the next three years. The Mulock name is synonymous with the Panthers.

» Panthers fans have rightly expressed

concerns over a potential plan to move even more home games away from Penrith Stadium from 2019. As part of the NRL’s support for the State Government’s big stadium strategy, the Panthers Board has agreed in principle to take two home games to the refurbished Parramatta Stadium. The club is gambling on the fact that by helping out now, Panthers may win in the long run when the location for the promised outer western Sydney stadium is decided. It should be noted that current deals with Bathurst and Christchurch would have expired by the time 2019 comes around, so the Panthers may indeed still play 10 games at Penrith Stadium. The biggest fear I have is that the big stadium strategy is quite clearly destined to fail, and you’d have to wonder whether the outer western Sydney stadium will even go ahead if the rest of the network crashes and burns.

» While the Panthers benefited from

The Bunker’s intervention late in the game last Sunday, coach Anthony Griffin admits the expensive review set-up still has some issues. “I’m the same as most coaches – it’s Russian Roulette. You don’t know what’s going to happen,” he told the post-match press conference last Sunday. “The basic rules of the game are going out the window... but I’ll shut up now.” The media also asked Matt Moylan for his view, but Griffin quickly chipped in: “He’ll shut up now too.”

» The incredible ratings for Fox Sports

continues. Despite competition from free-to-air broadcaster Channel Nine, an incredible 244,000 people tuned in to

Ph:

watch the Eels play the Panthers last Sunday. The A-League continues to struggle with just 42,000 tuning in to watch the Wanderers play Central Coast last Friday evening.

» Former Panthers CEO Justin Pascoe,

who is now at the Wests Tigers, was in a meeting with Jason Taylor recently when his mobile phone rang. The man on the other end? Former Panthers coach Ivan Cleary. Talk about awkward!

» A very special guest will be in town this Saturday night for the Panthers v Cowboys name. ARL Commission Chairman John Grant will be in attendance in a rare visit to a suburban ground.

Planning a

miracle NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87

“It was a massive moment for me but I have to give credit to Sowie’s good kick... I knew I had to get up in the air and find Carty. We always practice that move at training and it really came off.” Soward, who was chiefly responsible for the thrilling final play, said he was confident his troops knew what to do when the Steeden went sky high. “I knew once it went over that Waqa was going to catch it, it was just a matter of who was going to turn up. Carty turned up at the right time and made the right play and scored,” he said. Just minutes earlier Soward had the chance to level the game with a sideline conversion following a try to Josh Mansour. However, the kick was waved away and Penrith were forced to pull off a miracle to get the win. “It would’ve been nice to get the kick but credit to this group that they didn’t place any extra pressure on me,” Soward said. “We got through a couple of sets there and then I just put the kick up and Waqa and Carty did all the work.” The win puts Penrith just two points outside the top eight.

P

anthers centre Waqa Blake says his involvement in Penrith’s match winning try in the dying seconds of last Sunday’s clash against the Eels was the highlight of his young career. Behind by two points and with mere seconds remaining on the clock, Penrith half Jamie Soward put up a perfect crossfield kick that was batted back by a leaping Blake into the hands of Bryce Cartwright, who barged his way through the Eels’ defence to score. With Penrith desperate for a victory after three nailbiting defeats already this year, it was certainly a moment Panthers fans will remember for a very long time. Speaking with Extra Time on Monday, 21-year-old Blake said the incredible play was a planned move. “We practice it all week, we just haven’t had a chance to do it yet,” he revealed.

Wallace

shines

P

eter Wallace’s form at hooker will give Panthers coach Anthony Griffin a real headache when James Segeyaro returns from injury later this month. The former Penrith captain shifted to the dummy half role in Round 2 following Segeyaro’s broken arm in the opening round of the season – and is yet to disappoint. Last Sunday afternoon during Penrith’s nail-biting win over the Parramatta Eels, Wallace was in fine form – scoring a try and making 30 tackles. Speaking at a recovery session on Monday morning, the 30-year-old local junior said he’s relishing his new role.

“I’m enjoying playing at hooker... I’m just getting used to the work-rate and that but I’m really enjoying it at the moment,” he said. Wallace, who played a number of games at hooker whilst at Brisbane under coach Griffin, said he’s getting more and more comfortable at hooker as the weeks roll on. “I’m getting used to the work-rate in the middle, every week it’s getting easier, but I’ve played a little bit there before so I sort of knew what to do,” he said. “I don’t watch anyone (other hookers) on tape, I just play what I see and try and direct the team around, give the boys nice clean ball and try and make my tackles.” Wallace is off-contract at season’s end with many predicting earlier this year that 2016 could be his last in the NRL. However, with the form he’s showed in recent weeks, it could very well earn him a new deal at the foot of the Mountains

Peter Wallace dives across the line against the Eels. Photo: Megan Dunn

“Every week it’s getting easier. I’ve played a little bit there before so I sort of knew what to do.” especially if he can stay injury-free. One of Wallace’s teammates who has been championing his return to form is none other than halfback Jamie Soward.

The pair has developed a strong bond since joining the Panthers together in 2014, with Soward believing Wallace should be a contender for a NSW Origin spot. “I said a couple of weeks ago he wouldn’t look out of place in an Origin jersey playing in that spot. The way he’s come back from two serious knee injuries and handled himself away from footy and then coming back this year is a credit to himself and who he is as a person,” Soward said. “He’s playing fantastic for us and is really helping the team out, his form is great at the moment.”

THE DREW REVIEW with Brad Drew

CARTY FOR ORIGIN? The Drew household is a happy one this week after the derby result on Sunday at Pirtek Stadium. What a fantastic finish to a great game of rugby league and a much needed win for the Panthers. There were some sensational performances for both teams but Bryce Cartwright showed again just how much class and ability he has with his outstanding contribution, and justified once again why he has been short listed by NRL experts for Origin selection. The obvious question will be asked from plenty of the critics in the game about whether or not he is ready to step up to the Origin arena this year, but I know for certain it will only be a matter of when he plays Origin rather than if. And while we are on the topic of potential Origin contenders, you also need to

throw Matt Moylan, Reagan CampbellGillard, Trent Merrin and Josh Mansour into the mix because they have also been fantastic for Penrith in the early part of the season. This has created genuine hope and excitement around the Penrith community again about the future success of the Panthers. Who would have guessed at the start of the year that the Sydney Roosters would be 0-5. Certainly not me! I still think there is a chance that the Chooks can turn their season around but a lot will depend on how much influence Mitchell Pearce can have on his team once he returns in Round 9. At the moment they are only three wins off the pace and if they can scramble a win this week against their arch enemy the South Sydney Rabbitohs, it just might be enough to kick start their season into gear.

Having graduated through the ranks since joining the Panthers four years ago, Smith made his NRL debut in the final round of the 2015 season. “Chris is a wonderful young man and a

Photo: NRL Photos footballer with tremendous potential,” Panthers Executive General Manager Phil Gould said. “He has been with our club since his junior rep football days and has made tremendous contributions with every team he has played. “We are very sorry to lose him but we respect the fact a move to the Roosters gives Chris a great opportunity to advance his career. “We wish Chris all the best for the future and will follow his development with great interest.”

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITY Winter Better known as “Winnie”, Winter has been with us since he was 7 days old after being found by bush walkers abandoned on the side of a hiking trail. Winnie had a remarkable will to live and took to bottle feeding incredibly well. He is now fully grown and one of our biggest foxes and his outgoing, cheeky nature makes him a favourite with the volunteers.

LOWER GRADES » Intrust Super Premiership NSW: After a number of lean weeks the Penrith Panthers finally got back on track with a 50-12 thrashing of the Manly Sea Eagles last Saturday afternoon. Penrith led 16-0 at the break but it was the second half where they really showed their dominance in attack. One of the standouts of the match was AFL convert Josh Hall, who had a career best game for the Panthers with a personal tally of 22 points. Try scorers for the Panthers included Josh Hall (2), Sam Clune (2), Andrew Heffernan, George Jennings, Chris Smith, Zach Dockar-Clay and Matt Place. Hall kicked seven from nine. This Sunday afternoon the eighthplaced Panthers will travel to Hunter Stadium to take on the 10th-placed Newcastle Knights. Reserve grade coach Steve Georgallis will welcome back former Knight Will Smith for the clash, who will slot in at fullback while Sam Clune will move to the centres. If not required in first grade the day prior, experienced lock Elijah Taylor has been named to start this week.

» Holden Cup: Last Sunday afternoon

during their top of the table clash with the Parramatta Eels, Penrith scored an impressive 42-4 win courtesy of a barrage of tries in the second half. Penrith led 6-4 at the break but the tight tussle was turned on its head in the second half when gun Eels fullback Bevan French was injured. French’s injury

allowed last year’s premiers to pounce. Try scorers for the Panthers included Dylan Edwards (2), Liam Martin, Jake Ennis, Corey Waddell, Jarome Luai, and Nathan Cleary. Cleary kicked six from six with the boot. This Saturday afternoon the competition leading Panthers will return home to take on the third-placed North Queensland Cowboys. NYC coach Cameron Ciraldo has named a similar team that took on the Eels minus Dylan Fuad.

» Ron Massey Cup: After enjoying last

weekend off, the St Marys Ron Massey Cup team will return to action this Sunday afternoon. The sixth-placed Saints will battle the seventh-placed Asquith Magpies at St Marys Stadium from 3pm. It should be a great clash.

» SG Ball: Round 8 of the SG Ball com-

petition took place last weekend with Penrith big winners over Canberra 32-14. The Panthers, who sit in third position, will take on the 14th-placed St George Illawarra Dragons in the final round of the competition this weekend.

» Harold Matthews: Round 8 of the

Harold Matthews competition took place last weekend with Penrith going down to Canberra 30-20. The Panthers have slipped to 10th position and will battle the ninth-placed Dragons in the final round of the competition this weekend.

PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE

Kitty Flanagan is seriously funny KATE REID

Y

ou’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t love having a good old fashioned rant about the things that piss them off. Check the comments section on social media and you’ll see all the proof you need that us humans love to vent. For comedian Kitty Flanagan, humorous rant style monologues are all just a part of her job on ABC’s news comedy show ‘The Weekly’. She’s tackled everything from people who wear gym gear when they’re not working out, to reverse racism and our obsession with coffee. And she’s made a lot of people laugh in the process. Luckily inspiration for her next segment is never far away. “Sometimes it’s really easy because I just go ‘oh God I’m so angry’ and then I think ‘oh excellent, I’ve got a vehicle for that this week’,” she laughed. On ‘The Weekly’ – as well as her former gig on Channel Ten’s ‘The Project’ – Kitty mostly picks her own topic, looking for something that’s newsworthy, but not too newsworthy (those weird and wonderful new study findings often make for great material). But ultimately it all comes down to what Kitty – and hopefully her audience – finds funny. “There’ve been a couple where I’ve thought, ‘gee, I hope I’m not alone on this’,” she laughed “It’s not until I sit down and have a quick rehearsal with Charlie [Pickering] and other people that I breathe a sigh of relief and go ‘OK, they’re finding it funny too, it’s not just the weird angry lady’. “But then sometimes it doesn’t matter, sometimes the weird angry lady can be funny too. Everyone’s thinking ‘I’m not sure why that’s funny but she seems to be quite angry about it’,” she laughed. Penrith audiences will have a chance to hear Kitty’s hilarious tales in the flesh when she heads to the Evan Theatre next month with her show ‘Seriously?’;

which has returned for an encore performance after becoming a hit with audiences in 2015. The show is constantly evolving and has taken on a bit of a different spin than Kitty was originally expecting. “It’s become quite a personal show, it wasn’t ever supposed to be a personal show,” she laughed. “One night I started telling stories about dating a cop and that turned out to be quite funny, so I started telling more stories about dating a cop.” It’s not just about the personal though, Kitty also performs musical numbers with her sister, Penny, and offers practical advice for all of life’s big issues. “I teach you important things, like how to talk like an old person, that’s always a handy skill,” she said. Or what to call certain body parts when speaking to your doctor. “Should you use the correct terminology or should you use some word that you’ve been using in your family for years, it’s always a bit embarrassing,” Kitty laughed. Though her first job working in advertising as a copywriter seems a long way from the comedy stage, Kitty says there’s one skill she learnt from writing those 30 second radio ads that has helped with her comedy work writing; brevity. “You’re limited in how much time and space you have so you have to learn to get your point across quickly and I think that really helps with stand up, you don’t want to be up there waffling,” she said. “That’s been really useful on ‘The Project’, and ‘The Weekly’ as well, because once again I’ve only got a finite time. “I actually quite like that discipline because it really teaches you to go through your stuff and take out anything unnecessary.” Kitty Flanagan will be performing at the Evan Theatre on Friday, May 13 at 8pm. Tickets are $46.10. For more info or to purchase tickets, visit www.penrith. panthers.com.au or call 4720 5555.

Lee’s tribute heads to Rooty Hill RSL KATE REID

L

ast year country music icon Lee Kernaghan released a new album that pays tribute to the men and women of our Defence Forces. Following on from the release of the album – titled ‘The Spirit of the Anzacs’ – Lee hit the road for ‘The Songs and the Stories in Concert’ tour which will be heading back to the western suburbs this April. Lee gained inspiration for the tracks after a visit to the Australian War Memorial where he read letters from those who’ve served our country abroad.

“As I was reading the letters I was absolutely overcome with emotion, reading the words of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and the nurses and their families,” Lee said. “I think it was at that point that the idea to adapt their words, their honest noble words, to music began.” Joining Lee on stage for this poignant concert will be special guests The Wolfe Brothers and Christie Lamb. Lee Kernaghan’s ‘The Songs and the Stories in Concert’ tour will be coming to Rooty Hill RSL on Thursday, April 21 at $54.90 per ticket. hief Winemaker at d’Arenberg Wines in South h Australia, Chester Osborn has long had a passion n for searching out new grape varieties suited to the e diverse terroir of his vineyards in McLaren Vale. And he’s coupled this with an equal passion for creating g the most unusual of blends, and then giving the resultantt wines the quirkiest of labels. Wines such as his recently y released The Old Bloke & The Three Young Blondess (pictured) that’s 91 per cent Shiraz and three per centt each Roussanne, Viognier and Marsanne that d’Arenberg g planted in the 1990s, and subsequently the youthful Three e Young Blondes in this unique blend. Bringing these four together has resulted in a beautifully y complex and captivating wine that seems to get betterr with every flavoursome sip, with wonderful and almostt chunky Shiraz tannins tempered by the lusciousnesss of the three white Rhone varieties… and with equally y wonderful aromas to savour as well. The most premium release in d’Arenberg’s 104 yearr history, this stand-out wine is $200 and available only y from the cellar door or online (www.darenberg.com.au,)) and a richly rewarding drop to share over a good cheese e plate to finish a special dinner. One to note: If you’re heading overseas, or just staying g closer to home on that next holiday, and some winery y visits along the way are planned, a must to get hold off before you go is Lonely Planet book Wine Trails. For here is a meticulously researched introduction to o not only something like 330 wineries in 52 regions of 20 0 countries, but tips on where to stay around those winer-ies, where to eat, maps to help get around… and of course e the specialities in local wines. OUT NOW WON T UO MUSIC

DVD In the Heart of the Sea Rated M // JADE ALIPRANDI

‘In The Heart of The Sea’ does everything right. The direction taken with the film is good, the actors do their job perfectly, and the cinematography is great. But what’s missing? A spark. Based on a true story, the film is set in the winter of 1820 and follows the New England whaling ship Essex and its crew. A sperm whale of epic proportions destroys the ship, with the crew left to fight for their lives as they brave storms, starvation, panic and misery. The expedition the film is based on is what gave American writer Herman Melville his inspiration to write the 1851 classic Moby Dick. While the movie is enjoyable to

watch, it appears that the special effects cover any raw emotional value ‘In The Heart of The Sea’ might have brought to the screen. With a storyline like this, where characters are left to fend for themselves in the middle of nowhere, it’s hard to feel empathy for them as you wait for the next big move. The movie is produced on a large scale but somewhat fails to meet the climax. If you come across this one, it’s worth a watch but don’t expect a dramatic thriller, nor as much action that one would hope to see after viewing the trailers. ‘In The Heart of The Sea’ is rated M and is available on DVD, Blu-Ray or digital download now!

CINEMA The Huntsman: Winter’s War Rated M // KATE REID

Babymetal

Metal Resistance // KATE REID When it comes to genre melding it doesn’t get much more unexpected than Babymetal. While the band’s instrumentals are all metal, the tracks are sung by three female Japanese pop stars. But the most bizarre aspect of Babymetal is the fact that they’ve actually managed to gain a strong following across the globe, having supported Lady Gaga on her Artpop tour and joined festival bills alongside metal heavyweights Metallica and Slayer. Though the band’s detractors probably thought the novelty would wear off after their debut album, Babymetal’s second release ‘Metal Resistance’ is even better than the first. It’s even managed to earn praise from some of music’s most well known publications. It’s pretty obvious that Babymetal is one of those bands that people are either going to love or hate. But music should be fun and if you’re open to new experiences, this album is just that – crazy metal/pop fun.

2012 saw the release of the dark fantasy film version of the classic tale of ‘Snow White’. This week the film’s sequel – ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War’ – hits cinemas. Set before the events of the first film, ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War’, focuses on the stories of Eric The Huntsman

(Chris Hemsworth) and Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron). Freya is betrayed by her evil sister Ravenna and sets out to create her own northern kingdom. Aiding her in the protection of her new land is Freya’s ability to freeze her enemies and an army of huntsmen she herself has raised. Along with the skills they need to fight, Freya also teaches her young soldiers

never to fall in love, so when Eric (Chris Hemsworth) falls for fellow warrior Sara, the angry queen sets out to stop them. What follows is a battle where Eric and Sara must fight to end the sisters’ tyranny. New additions to the cast include Emily Blunt and Jessica Chastain. ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War’ is currently screening at Hoyts Penrith. See www.hoyts.com.au.

LIFE & STYLE PENRITH’S MOST RESPECTED LINE-UP OF EXPERTS ARIES

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

This week’s marvellous Venus/Mars hook up highlights your natural charm and sex appeal. Being pushy is out, and being persuasive is in, as you get what you want in the most diplomatic and dynamic ways! You’re also in the mood to express yourself creatively via cooking, gardening, writing, acting, singing, dancing, drawing, painting or playing music. Whatever rings your bell! Tuesday night is the perfect time for a romantic [and passionate] rendezvous.

Joanne Madeline

Moore

HOROSCOPES

TAURUS

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

The Venus/Mars trine motivates you to shake off the stress and embrace the good life. Hedonistic Heaven is where you want to be, as you spoil yourself and indulge your senses via gourmet food and fine wine; plus a relaxing massage, hair spa or beauty treatment. Aim to get the balance right between socialising with family and friends, and spending some quality time on your own. Some smitten Bulls will become involved in a secret and steamy love affair.

GEMINI

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

It’s all about love and lust, as the planets galvanise your partnership and intimacy zones. So if you are attached plan something suitably romantic and sexy with your partner. Single? You won’t find your soul mate if you’re sitting at home sobbing and sulking about being solo. It’s time to spread your social net far and wide, as you network like crazy and find the man or woman of your dreams! The weekend is wonderful for serious conversations about profound subjects.

CANCER

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

Weekly posts at www.BohoAstro.com www.twitter.com/JoMadelineMoore Copyright Joanne Madeline Moore 2016

With the Sun, Venus and Uranus all in your career zone, it’s not the time to hole up in your cozy Crab cave. Seize the moment! Lucky and unexpected opportunities are around, but you must be quick to grab them or they will pass you by. And are you worried about a romantic or platonic relationship? With this week’s star patterns you’re less likely to be over-emotional, and more inclined to speak directly and honestly.

LEO

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

It’s time for loquacious Lions to talk, text, tweet, mix and mingle, socialise, circulate and network with a stimulating new crowd. Travel, adventure and education are also high on the agenda, as Mercury encourages you to brain-storm with work mates, connect with international colleagues or upgrade your current skills. There’s always something new to learn! The weekend is a wonderful time to indulge in some Leo luxe via good food and fine wine plus convivial company.

VIRGO

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

With success planet Jupiter transiting your sign and forming a trine with your ruler, Mercury don’t waste time being a bashful Virgo. Be enthusiastic about the opportunities that are around you as you explore and experiment, plus leap through life with a fabulous work ethic and an extra dose of confidence. Draw inspiration from fashion entrepreneur, Victoria Beckham [born on April 17, 1974]. “I believe you can achieve anything if you work hard enough to get it.”

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

This week Venus [your boss planet] forms a delicious trine with dynamic Mars. You’re at your charismatic, dynamic and sexy best, as you charm the cynics and dazzle the doubters. Motivation and confidence are high, so don’t be shy about promoting your talents and celebrating your strengths. It’s time to be bold and beautiful! Mercury also boosts your ability to sort the wheat from the chaff, as you become more discriminating and selective about what you do.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

This week Venus and Mars stimulate your urge to splurge on extravagant purchases that you don’t really need. So perhaps it would be best for smart Scorpios to avoid shopping sprees … both in person and online. In the words of financier J. P. Morgan: “If you have to ask how much it costs, you can’t afford it”. Sunday is super for all types of study, research and deep thinking, as you solve a stubborn problem or get to the bottom of a mystery.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Jump off the comfy couch Sagittarius! This week’s dynamic stars encourage you to be proudly proactive, as you set professional goals and then actively pursue them. Not sure how to do that? Try rubbing shoulders with your kickass Aries friends … they’ll show you how to crank up your motivation and energise your enthusiasm. Thursday’s Mercury/Jupiter trine is specifically terrific for all work, business, law, commerce and educational endeavours, so make the most of it!

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

The focus is firmly on domestic matters, as peacemaker Venus helps the family pull together in a positive and proactive fashion. The more support and encouragement you give loved ones, the better. But avoid getting drawn into petty power plays mid-week [especially with a work colleague]. Learn to use your influence in smart and subtle ways. The weekend Mercury/Pluto trine gives you some profound insights into a complicated situation involving a child, teen or friend.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

The secret to success especially at home is communication as Mercury encourages you to look, listen and learn from those around you. So your motto for the week is from actress Emma Thompson. “Any problem, big or small, within a family always seems to start with bad communication. Someone isn’t listening.” Imagination and intuition are heightened on the weekend, when you tap into your unconscious mind and receive important guidance or inspiration.

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Tuesday is the pick of the week, as the Mercury/Neptune connection boosts creativity, compassion and perception and you’ll feel a need to escape into a fantasy world via reading, writing, painting, playing music, day-dreaming or creative visualisation. Your mind could also turn to spiritual or religious matters as you meditate, contemplate or pray. On the weekend, don’t just look at problems from your own perspective.

Imagine a world without factory farming... Watch the film. Sign the pledge. Inspire others.

RELIGION

Don’t be left in the dark about love

www.glenmorepark anglican.com.au and on Facebook

The Bible doesn’t leave us in the dark about love. One passage from the book of Corinthians, a passage often read at weddings, tells us, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” This is love in action. Patience as God has been patient with us. Kindness as God has been kind to us. Forgiving as God has forgiven us in Jesus. Not keeping a record of wrongs or grudges as God has completely cancelled the debt of our sin and rebellion against him. This is a love that protects, a love that trusts, a love that never gives up, as God does not give up on us, this is practical love in action. Imagine the impact if this kind of love was let loose in our world!

The ideal way to manage your food intake is to only eat when you’re hungry and to stop when you feel comfortably full. Seems like common sense doesn’t it. But decades of fad diets have thoroughly confused us when it comes to the simple act of eating. Adding to the evidence that the best diet is actually no diet at all is a recent study of more than 50,000 participants that showed a correlation between those who ate intuitively and lower rates of overweight and obesity. It sounds so simple, but

Kate

Reid NUTRITION

How we’ve made eating complicated Kate Reid is a journalist and university qualified Nutritionist with a Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) degree from the University of Wollongong. kate.reid@ westernweekender. com.au @kate_reid6

unfortunately there’s many other factors – like our emotions – that come into play when we talk about eating. So how do you learn to listen to your intuition and develop a better relationship with food? One of the first things you can do is to say no to dieting. The majority of people who go on a diet put the weight back on in the long term.

Restricting your food intake, counting calories, or labelling foods as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, is not a sustainable, or enjoyable, way to live. Instead, make the effort to listen to your body. Though we’re programmed to think that certain times of the day mean we must eat, it’s important to recognise when you’re truly hungry and eat accordingly. When you do eat do it slowly, as it can take up to 20 minutes for your body to recognise that you’re full. It’s also important to learn to actually enjoy your food. Many of us are not aware of how switched off we are when we eat. Think about it, how many times have you sat down on the couch with some chips or chocolate and demolished a whole bag without even realising? We may really enjoy the first few mouthfuls, but after that it just becomes an automatic action. Instead, take the time to actually enjoy the delicious taste of each mouthful and you’ll feel more satisfied and will be less likely to over consume. For those that struggle with emotional eating it’s best to seek help to address the cause of the emotions so you’re less likely to use food as a coping strategy.

Love is a funny word. We say we love ice-cream. We love time off. We love a good movie. Yet, at the same time, we also talk about loving each other; loving our husband or wife, loving our children. It seems strange comparing the love we have for people to loving ice-cream! Yet, love is a precious thing. Real love is a radical thing! Love is the glue that binds and holds relationships together. It is very hard to live without love. It’s not hard to see, as we look at our world, how important, how valuable real love is.

It has been the return of the band tee lately! This trend ties in with super distressed denim, leather and boots, and all things cool! Vintage band tees are comfy and worn in; they can be extra faded with holes added for character. Don’t be shy, it’s not to be limited to teenage groupies, this look is definitely for everyone! fan! Incorporating personality into casual wear, bold statement tees can actually be quite versatile, you can really glam them up for a surprisingly chic ensemble. For the girls wear your graphic tee tucked into a flared A-line skirt and accessorise with a chunky embellished necklace. I love the teardrop stone

cluster necklace by Colette Hayman found at Westfield Penrith. In Autumn we love to layer up making t-shirts the perfect fashion piece to play with all year round! Not just for concerts, pick your choice from the classics and rock a vintage tee featuring bands like Nirvana, The Ramones, Guns n Roses, KISS and Iron Maiden. With celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Big Sean, a new take on the style can be seen with an old-school hip hop approach, tees worn are emblazoned with Lauren Hill, Tupac and TLC. At General Pants in Westfield Penrith I found a great long sleeve tour inspired tee by The People Vs. With a heavy metal skull, snake on the back and Metallica like writing, this broken in shirt comes complete with the worn-in appearance looking like your old favourite you’ve had for years.

yundai has once again received international acclaim in the prestigious Red Dot Design Awards. The ground-breaking new IONIQ model has been recognised for its outstanding design in the coveted Vehicle category, becoming the sixth Hyundai car to receive a Red Dot title in the last three years. The award acknowledges the futureorientated design of the newest addition to Hyundai Motor’s car line-up. IONIQ is Hyundai Motor’s first dedicated ecofriendly model and is an important milestone in its sustainability strategy, with this latest award bringing further global recognition for its forward-looking design philosophy. Hyundai Motor was recognised by Red Dot jury for presenting an evolutionary design, through a refined, sophisticated form, and for its application of new ecofriendly materials. IONIQ presents new possibilities for Hyundai Motor’s future mobility styling, with its purified shape led by aerodynamics, and its refined, clean lines and surfaces enhancing its coupe-like silhouette. The 2016 award follows on from three Red Dot Design Awards received in 2015, with the New Generation i20 Coupe, New Generation i20 Five-door and All-new Sonata recognised for outstanding design. The 2016 contest attracted 5,214 entries.

Wanderers need a miracle Brendon Santalab celebrates a goal last Friday. Photo: Megan Dunn NATHAN TAYLOR

hen the Western Sydney Wanderers run out on Sunday afternoon for their game against the Wellington Phoenix, they’ll know whether or not they still have a shot at winning the coveted Premier’s Plate. The equation is simple: the Wanderers need Brisbane and Adelaide to either lose or draw during this weekend’s matches for them to still have a chance of finishing first past the post. If those results do happen and Western Sydney defeat the Phoenix on Sunday,

W

they will be crowned A-League Premiers for the second time in their short history. The Wanderers were able to get back into Premier’s Plate contention last Friday following a comfortable 4-1 win over the Central Coast Mariners at Pirtek Stadium. Brendon Santalab’s brace and goals to Romeo Castelen and Mitch Nichols earned the Wanderers a much-needed three points heading into the final round of the regular season. It was a dominant display from the very first minute for the home side, who spent almost the entire match exclusively in the attacking half. Speaking after the game, Wanderers coach Tony Popovic said he was pleased

with his side’s focus and discipline. “We had control for large parts, there was a period in the first half where we got a bit casual and sloppy on the ball and we were punished for it. That was a good wake up call for us, but apart from that there weren’t too many concerns,” he said. Popovic was also delighted with his side’s attack, scoring four goals for just the second time this season. “It was a great reward and four goals, you’re always pleased when you see them go in,” he said. Last Friday night’s clash against the Mariners was the final regular season game for the Wanderers at Pirtek Stadium. If the Wanderers fail to win this Sunday,

and other results don’t go their way, it could be the final time for a number of years that the Wanderers play in Parramatta. Popovic reflected on the club’s four seasons at ‘Wanderland’. “We’ve been on a great journey these last four years, the fans have been with us from day one and have experienced some fantastic moments here,” he said. It was announced last week that the Wanderers will temporarily be relocated to Sydney Olympic Park during construction of Parramatta’s new multi-million dollar stadium. The Wanderers battle the Wellington Phoenix this Sunday at 3pm.

New courts pass first big test Over 400 players turn out for annual Nepean Easter Junior Open event NATHAN TAYLOR

enrith’s newly refurbished Woodriff Gardens Tennis Centre played host to over 400 young tennis players over the Easter long weekend in a leg of Tennis Australia’s Junior Tour. The annual Nepean Easter Junior Open is the largest tennis event held across the country over the Easter period, and sees some of Australia’s best juniors descend on Penrith to compete. “Feedback on the new courts was fantastic,” Nepean Tennis CEO, Chris Woodland said. “It was the biggest field for some time, and players excited to play on the new surface was a contributing factor.” Local juniors played strongly, producing some great results at the local tournament. Andre DeOliviera was runner-up in U16 Boys Singles, Taylah Lawless was a semi-finalist in the U14 Girls Singles, and Joel Stevens was the runner-up in the U14 Boys Consolation Singles. Woodland hoped even more high level tennis events would be headed to Penrith in the future given the international standard of the facility on offer.

Michael Hussey with new Sydney Thunder signing Ryan Gibson eigning Mens and Womens T20 Big Bash League champions the Sydney Thunder have named club great Michael Hussey as their first Director of Cricket. Hussey will be responsible for facilities, list management, player recruitment, coach appointments and assessment as he looks to continue his involvement in the club he captained for the past three BBL campaigns. “I was obviously very keen to stay involved with the Thunder,” Hussey said. “We’ve made a lot of good strides in building the club, but it’s still a work in progress and we want to build towards sustained success.” Hussey’s first order of business was to announce the signing of prolific 20-yearold batsman Ryan Gibson on a two-year deal. “Ryan’s obviously a very exciting talent,” Hussey said.

Some of the players in action at the Nepean Easter Junior Open “On behalf of Nepean Tennis I would like to extend a huge thank you to Tennis Australia, local member Stuart Ayres, and particularly to Penrith Council for their investments in the Woodriff Gardens venue,” he said. “The Penrith community should be thrilled with the results.” The new courts were opened in February by tennis legend Ken Rosewall and Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown, and have been widely applauded.

Big week ahead in harness racing Story continued from » p. 72 Band of David Tapp will provide the night’s musical entertainment, while children can have fun on the jumping castle, slippery dip or just play on the spacious lawns. “All of this is supported by a high standard of food and beverages, while enthusiasts will be welcomed at the new 3P’s Pizza and Coffee Lounge that has already been wellreceived,” Ms Pozza said. Meanwhile, the $15,000 PFD Cup will be run tonight, April 7 at Penrith Paceway. Run over the same distance as the Renshaw Cup, the PFD Cup is regarded as the traditional lead-up to the Renshaw Cup.

AFL After a mixed start to the season, the Greater Western Sydney Giants will take on cross-town rivals the Sydney Swans this weekend. The Giants narrowly lost their opening round encounter to Melbourne but hit back last weekend to defeat Geelong 89-76 at Manuka Oval. GRIDIRON

Do you have what it takes to be a Duck? Local gridiron team set to put locals to the test NATHAN TAYLOR

ver since former NRL star Jarryd Hayne took his talents to the NFL the sport of gridiron has exploded in Australia. With 7mate, ESPN and of course the ‘Hayne Plane’ giving gridiron mainstream coverage, more and more people are taking interest. Over the next two months, local gridiron club the Nepean Ducks will be hosting three combine days in preparation for the 2016 Gridiron NSW season. The Ducks, who will enter their third GNSW season later this year, have grown from strength to strength over the years and will this season field a possible juniors team (15-19) along with their usual seniors (18 and over) team. The upcoming combine days, to be held at Cranebrook Oval, will be a chance for people to test their skills in a variety of gridiron-based tests including the 40 yard dash, cone drill, shuttle run, broad jumps and push-ups. Speaking with the Weekender, Nepean Ducks President Darren White said the combines will be an excellent way for people to get involved in the fast-growing American sport. “This will be our first ever combine

E

The Nepean Ducks are ready for another big season and it’ll be great for people interested in gridiron to see where their strengths and weaknesses are,” he said. “It’ll also be an opportunity for people to better themselves as they can come down to each of the combines to try and improve.” Combine testing is not compulsory with people just interested in playing gridiron welcome to come down to find out more. “People will also get to meet the coaches and players from last season to mingle and get to know the sport better,” White said.

“You don’t have to partake in the combine, people are free to pop down for information on gridiron and the mighty Nepean Ducks.” The first Nepean Ducks combine will be held this Saturday, April 9 from 10am to 1pm, with the other combine days to be held on May 1 and May 28. “We won’t be using the combine days to rank players or select teams, it’s purely a fun way to see where people are at and hand out information,” White said. Cranebrook Oval is located on Cranebrook Road in Cranebrook.

Around the grounds RUGBY: The Penrith Emus have suffered their third consecutive defeat, this time thrashed by Eastwood 82-14 in Round 3 of the Shute Shield competition. It was the second straight week Jeremy Paul’s men conceded 80 points, which will no doubt be displeasing to everyone involved with the rebuilding club. This Saturday afternoon the Penrith Emus will return home to tackle Randwick at 3pm.

BASKETBALL: Penrith are back in business, hammering the Bankstown Bruins 67-47 in Round 4 of the Division 1 Youth League Women’s competition. Chloe Bloom was Penrith’s best on court scoring 15 points. The Panthers will look to make it two straight when they take on the Central Coast Crusaders this Sunday afternoon. AUSSIE RULES: The Penrith Rams have gone down narrowly to the North Shore Bombers 65-58 in the opening round of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition. Trailing by just one point at three quarter time, Penrith were right in the match until the fourth quarter when the Bombers edged ahead. James Devlin and Mitchell Stevens scored two goals each for the Rams. Penrith will play their first home game of the season when they take on the South West City Magpies this Saturday afternoon at Greygums Oval. FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers have returned to the top of the NPL2 table after an impressive 5-0 win over St George. This Saturday evening the Wanderers will battle the Macarthur Rams.

CRICKET: The Penrith Cricket Club were defeated by 70 runs during last weekend’s Fourth Grade Grand Final against Sydney University at Howell Oval. Penrith won the toss and sent Sydney University into bat. Before being dismissed, the visitors made 304 courtesy of centuries to Hayden Kerr and wicketkeeper Matthew Powys. As the higher ranked team heading into the decider, Penrith only needed a first innings draw to secure the premiership. However, they seemed determined to chase the first innings win but unfortunately, they were bowled out for 238.

16 points. The Panthers will look to bounce back this weekend when they travel to Maitland to battle the Mustangs.
