Big crowds expected at local Dawn Services he community will have the opportunity to reflect, remember and respect our veterans this ANZAC Day at Penrith and St Marys.

Members of Penrith RSL Sub-branch and St Marys RSL Sub-branch are expecting thousands of people to turn up to Tuesday’s Dawn Services.

Vice President of Penrith RSL SubBranch, Peter Todd, has been going to Dawn Services since he was five-yearsold.

“My father was in World War II, and I’m hoping my kids will turn up and wear their grandfather’s medals, and maybe in 20 years they can wear mine,” he said.

Secretary Mick Visinko said that while the cost of holding the services is escalating, it’s never been more important to remember as for many soldiers, the battle comes home with them.

“At the moment, we have so many different military commitments,” Mr Visinko said.

“There are mental health issues of soldiers that need to be addressed.”

He believes that getting younger generations involved is “absolutely important” to ensure these soldiers are remembered.

Before the school holidays, over 2,000 staff and students filled Penrith Paceway for a special service held by Penrith RSL Sub-branch (pictured).

“The amount of compliments we get after the services is fantastic and makes it worth doing every year,” Mr Todd said.

He recalls that every year when he hears the buglers play, he gets shivers down his spine.

The community is invited to join the ANZAC Day services held by the Penrith RSL Sub-branch and St Marys RSL Sub-branch.

At Penrith, the ANZAC Sunday Service will be held on April 23 at Memory Park assembling at 2.30pm with the service starting at 3pm.

The ANZAC Dawn Service at Penrith will be at the same location on April 25, assembling at 4.30am for a silent march with the service starting at 5.00am.

In St Marys, the Sunday Service will assemble at the corner of Queen Street and Charles Hackett Drive at 2pm with a service commencing at Victoria Park following the march around 2.45pm.

The annual Dawn Service on Tuesday, April 25 will commence at 5.00am at St Marys RSL Club.

Both Sub-branches are inviting locals back to their club for an ANZAC Day breakfast and a game of two-up after the formalities.

Veterans aim to lend support and knowledge s the world changes, so too does the face of warfare, and members of the Penrith RSL Sub-branch are searching for ways to better help contemporary veterans.

Vice President of Penrith RSL Subbranch, Brian Cartwright said they are

looking to broaden their approach into the future.

“With the contemporary veterans, the number of deployments they’re getting means we’re cycling them through a lot more than we potentially did in the past,” he said.

“I know friends of mine that have done two, three, four, five tours of Afghanistan in the space of just two or three years.”

In order to provide the best possible support, Mr Cartwright believes that the modern family unit needs to be better understood.

“You have to look at things like their partners,” he said “The husbands, the wives, the children and the impact these constant deployments have on the family.

“A big part of our charter is welfare for our members, and that extends to their family as well.”

Members of the Penrith RSL Sub-branch are looking to reposition themselves so veterans understand that they stand for the welfare of members first and foremost.

“We’re not the club, we’re not the beer and pokies,” Mr Cartwright said.

“We’re only custodians at the moment, we have to pass this on to the next generation.”

With an estimated 75 per cent of members over 55-years-old, the Subbranch is finding a change in culture between generations a challenge they must overcome. They believe that this change will start with the family.

“What we need to do is try and help the spouses with their partners being deployed more often,” he said.

“You could go away from anywhere between two days and six months.

“If you leave a wife and a baby behind for six months, they have to go on with their lives, they make a routine and you have to try and fit back in to that.”

The Sub-branch believes that the more younger members they can encourage to join, the better their service to the community, ex-service men and women, and their families will be.

Desmond still sheds tears for those who never came home or 31 years, warrant officer Desmond Harper (pictured) served in the Royal Australian Navy, signing the dotted line when he was just 17-years-old.

Now at age 86, Mr Harper introduces himself as someone who loves to dance, spending his retirement enjoying sessions at St Marys Dance Centre each week.

From a small farming town in Darling Downs, he moved to Sydney after his time at sea.

“When you come ashore, there were two places you moved to if you were in the Navy, it was either Sydney or Melbourne,” he said.

“I met a girl at a dance at Luna Park, and got married here in Sydney, and that’s how I came to live here.”

Through his career with the Navy, Mr Harper saw many ships, conflicts and wars including during the Korean War and the Malaysian Emergency.

“The most marvellous ship I ever served on was our first guided missile destroyers, which were commissioned in Boston in 1965, the HMAS Perth,” Mr Harper said.

“We had three of them, and they were absolutely magnificent ships.

“I always considered serving on one of those was akin to dancing with a beautiful and gracious woman.”

Mr Harper said he is proud to see the ANZAC spirit alive as crowds continue to grow at annual services.

“It means the ANZAC spirit won’t die, and that’s very important,” Mr Harper said.

“But equally as important as the ANZAC spirit is remembering those who never came back and those who were left behind.

“I give it a lot of thought, and shed a tear now and again about those who were left behind.”

Mr Harper’s voice begins to quiver as he recounts a military funeral last year that was attended by many Australian dignitaries.

“Sitting up there in the front row is a woman, with a baby in her arms and two smaller children on each side,” he said.

“That was his family. What happens to them? I could burst into tears thinking about young women like that.

“On ANZAC Day I think of those who never came back, and I think of those who waited in vain for someone to come home.”

Mr Harper received an Order of Australia in 1967 for his exceptional service in the Royal Australian Navy.

Brave Penrith boy who died a hero in the horrors of war enrith is littered with stories of young men and women who stood up for their country and did our city proud.

One of those men is Mertoun Sydney Mills, who was born on January 30, 1895 in Penrith, the son of Robert and Elizabeth Mills.

The Mills family had the family business called Railway House, on the corner of High and (now) Lawson Streets. The building still stands, being one of the oldest buildings in Penrith.

Mills completed his schooling at Penrith Superior Public School before attending Stott and Hoare’s Commercial College where he undertook courses in typing and shorthand. At the time of his enlistment, his occupation was listed as a drapery salesman, probably in his parents’ store.

According to research provided by Penrith City Library, Mills had been a corporal in the cadets as well as a member of the militia at Penrith for five years. He enlisted on February 14, 1916, following a letter of consent from his father.

Mills left Sydney on May 13, 1916 aboard HMAT Beltana and arrived at Devonport, England on July 9, 1916. He, like most other members of the AIF, then underwent training on the Salisbury Plains.

On November 23, Mills was sent to France and served in the Flanders region before being sent to northern France.

On January 14, 1917, he contracted mumps and was admitted to hospital.

In February, he was again admitted to hospital with boils. He rejoined his unit on February 16.

Mills was attached to the Divisional Ammunition Column, whose role it was to bring ammunition and supplies to the battery positions. He was killed just after the Battle of Messines on June 12, 1917.

He was having dinner when a shell hit a house and killed an old woman, a few soldiers, two children and a young girl.

Mills ran to their rescue, and another shell hit and killed him.

Rev James McKee conveyed the sad news to his parents. Writing to the Red Cross for more information on Mills’ death, Rev McKee stated: “Young Mills was a good boy – the only son of good parents”.

In his letters home, Mills referred to meeting up with other Penrith soldiers including Privates Rickards and Ausburn.

Lieut. W J Burnett, with whom Mills was a great friend, wrote to his wife (nee Eisenhuth, of Mulgoa): “I was very fond of him, and he died a hero.”

Public transport is the way to go if you’re heading to the Sydney CBD xtra public transport services will be running for the ANZAC Day Dawn Service and March in the Sydney CBD on Tuesday.

Early morning trains will run across most of the network to help get people to the 4.30am Dawn Service at the Cenotaph in Martin Place.

“The best station for the Dawn Service is Martin Place, or Wynyard Station is only a short walk away,” said a spokesperson for the Transport Management Centre.

Locals wanting to travel by train are being urged to catch a special service that leaves Emu Plains at 2.26am.

Travel on public transport to and from ANZAC Day events is free for current and ex-Australian Defence Force personnel in uniform, wearing their medals or with proof of military service.

Veterans’ families, carers, widows and widowers also travel free.

Motorists are advised to avoid the city on ANZAC Day with some roads closing as early as 3am.

Plenty of traditions surround an important day for Australia NZAC Day is a national public holiday of remembrance each year as it marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps with several traditions carried out on April 25 to mark ANZAC Day. ANZAC Day commemorations were first held on April 25, 1916, with the day becoming a national day of commemoration in the 1920s for the more than 60,000 Australians who had died during the war.

There are two ways in which people remember the ANZACs. Commemorative services, known as Dawn Services, are held across the nation at dawn, the time of the original landing at Gallipoli in 1915.

Commemorative ceremonies are more formal, and are held at war memorials around the country.

With the coming of the Second World War, ANZAC Day also served to commemorate the lives of Australians who died in that war with the meaning of ANZAC Day today including the remembrance of all Australians killed in military operations.

The men and women who are currently serving are also recognised.

Probably one of the more known traditions on ANZAC Day is the playing of ‘The Last Post’ – a bugle call in military tradition that marks the phases of the day.

It is during ‘The Last Post’ that people bow their heads for one minute of silence to respect and remember those who have died during their military service.

Another well-known formality during the Dawn Service is the reading of The Ode that ends in ‘we will remember them’.

The verse read out is from For the Fallen, a poem by the English poet and writer Laurence Binyon, with the verse becoming The League Ode in the 1920s.

Another popular tradition on ANZAC Day is playing ‘two-up’ at local RSL clubs and pubs.

The game marks a shared experience with diggers through the ages and involves a designated ‘spinner’ throwing two coins or pennies into the air. Players gamble on whether the coins will fall with both heads up, both tails up, or with one coin a head and one a tail known as ‘odds’.

The game is only legal on ANZAC Day.

Highs and lows of war were told through Nepean Times’ pages efore the days of the Internet and television, newspapers kept the nation informed of what was happening during the first World War. Locally, the Nepean Times became the bible of information. In one edition, on Saturday, October 27 1917, the Times reported on another local death.

“A message was recently received by Mr Albert Williams, Granville (recently of Penrith), informing him of the death of his brother, Sergt. Thomas Williams (aged 22 years) on 20th Sept last,” the report said.

“Sergt. Williams, who was a son of Mr G Williams, formerly of York Estate, Penrith, was a member of the 20th Battalion, and had seen considerable service on the Western Front. We have only meagre particulars as to Sergt.

Williams’ death, but his glorious end will ever tend to preserve his heroic fame and to inscribe his name on the tablets of his country’s and Empire’s gratitude.”

Many times, especially in the early days of the war, the reports were about farewells for those who were about to head off on a big “adventure”.

ing last (2nd October) at Lack’s Red Cow Hotel, a large number of the friends and well-wishers of Privates Dave (Starry) Webb and Arthur (Pluck) Hendern, who recently enlisted for active service, met to give expression to their feelings of regard; and to wish the two gallant soldiers mentioned bon voyage to the seat of war, and a safe return to their sunny native-land after a glorious and heroic career in the terrific strife against the vengeful foreign enemy.”

The news was very rarely joyous, and often told of families being ripped apart.

On Saturday, April 28 1917, the Times reported: “It has been the painful experience of some families in Penrith to have to mourn the loss of several members through the sombre agency of the world war; and we regret to say that the Gardiner family, living in Union Lane, Penrith, are amongst those so cruelly chastened and bereaved. The sad news of the death of Private Albert George Gardiner, who succumbed from wounds received about three weeks ago, we understand, was conveyed to his relatives on 23rd April. His brother (Private J W Gardiner) met, likewise, the soldier’s heroic death, having fallen in action some seven months ago.”

Kingswood families welcome home returned soldiers after World War I. One of the soldiers is Arthur Tolhurst, seen standing fifth from left. He is leaning on a crutch as he lost his left leg whilst fighting in France in 1917.

Bert Buller married Madge Starling on June 15, 1940, nine days before he enlisted with the 8th Division. In July 1941 he was in Singapore. He would spend the rest of the war in Changi prison. He was discharged from the Army in January 1946. Madge joined the Australian Women’s Army Service where she became a Sergeant. They lived in Woodriff Street, Penrith.

Stan Colless was born in Penrith on November 19, 1892, the son of Henry and Elizabeth Jane Colless (nee Jordan). He enlisted on June 19, 1915 and was assigned to the 9th reinforcements, 3rd Battalion with the rank of Sergeant. In September 1916, Stan Colless was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for his bravery during the Battle of Fromelles. He was killed on September 1, 1918.

Safety of popular car park questioned Council urged to find solution after complaints about Judges Car Park ALENA HIGGINS

afety concerns over the state of Judges Car Park have resurfaced, with Councillor Mark Davies requesting Council look at ways to clean up the mess.

Specifically the top level and stairwells have raised eyebrows recently, with local residents, particularly women, expressing their discontent.

Cr Davies said he had been contacted by a number of locals, who described the scene as a “big mess” and a “free for all”.

“Some fires are being lit, which is probably an indication that the weather is starting to change,” he said.

“Also, what is being described down the stairwells is that people are defecating and there is urine, and that’s not what we want.”

Cr Davies said people are willing to utilise the “prime” all-day parking facility located on Woodriff Street, but some were increasingly second guessing their usage “due to what is happening there”.

“I requested a memo or report back just to look at what we can do to clean up the top deck,” he said.

“This is an ongoing concern. The point I made last Monday night is it’s not an easy solution – there are a lot of factors.”

Parking returns to Allen Place 67 car spaces have been reinstated for use at the Allen Place car park, with an additional 23 new spaces built in the ramp footprint.

The reinstatement of this parking follows the completion of a 10-week project to remove the ramps and elevated car park at Allen Place and the bridges over Station Street.

Penrith Mayor, John Thain, said he was pleased that the project was delivered without delay.

“The Allen Place project has been delivered on time and on budget, lessening the impact on Penrith residents,” Cr Thain said.

“The delivery of 90 parking spaces, including 23 new spaces is a great result.

“The removal of the ramps, elevated car park and bridges has created a safer environment for our local businesses who operate near Allen Place and for residents who use this car park.”

The ramps were closed in March 2015 due to safety concerns, with recent deterioration making them unsalvageable.

eading through the pages of old editions of the Nepean Times this past week, the bluntness of war really hit home.

Without the Internet, social media, mobile phones or direct communication with their loved ones, those left behind simply had to wait.

They were waiting for one of two things to happen – their loved one to return home, or a telegram delivering bad news.

There was almost no inbetween.

For my great grandfather Bernard Mulligan, the first telegram arrived some time around May 1942.

It read: “I have been directed by the Minister for the Army to advise you that no definite information is at present available in regard to the whereabouts or circumstances of your son, Private Ronald Phillip Mulligan.”

It’s hard to imagine the fear, concern and sadness that would have been running through Bernard Mulligan’s body when the next telegram arrived some two months later.

“I am directed by the Minister for the Army to advise you that he must now be posted as missing, and to again convey to you the Minister’s sincere sympathy.”

At that stage, it’s probably fair to say that Bernard Mulligan knew the fate that his son Ronald had or was going to meet.

But it would take some three painstaking years before the grim reality was confirmed.

In a hand written telegram, the tragic reality of war hit home for Bernard Mulligan and his family, including my grandmother Mary who passed away last year, forever holding her brother’s memory close to her heart.

She always used to say that when she said goodbye to him when he left to fight for what he believed in, that she could feel she’d never see him again.

One thing we should all reflect on is how lucky we are. And how much we owe those who served our country, many losing their lives so we could live ours in the high standards we do today.

It is so important that ANZAC Day continues to thrive as it will be harder and harder for new generations to make a personal connection to the first and second World War, and for them to understand how it changed our country and ultimately, their lives today.

That is hardly their fault – time heals all wounds, they say, and the younger generations will have their own tragedies and world events to commemorate and remember.

However, there is no question that all of us, at times, take for granted the opportunities we have today as a result of those who came before us.

And that’s not just in relation to those who fought on battlefields.

Every generation could do with showing just a little more respect to those who have ‘been there, done that’.

On Tuesday, especially if you haven’t done it before, set the alarm nice and early and head to the ANZAC Day service in Penrith, St Marys or even the Sydney CBD. Take your kids, too. But make sure that somewhere between the early morning reflection and the two-up, you explain to them what the day is really about. They might not totally understand it, but if in the very least they respect it, it’s a mighty good start.

ulgoa Road is set to expand alongside Penrith’s population, with a corridor upgrade expected to cut travel times through Penrith to the M4 Motorway.

The NSW and Federal Governments have together released the 6.5km corridor preferred design for the Mulgoa and Castlereagh Roads widening and upgrade.

Penrith MP and Minister for Western Sydney, Stuart Ayres said the road is one of the most congested in Sydney.

“In peak hours this road has nearly 4,000 car movements on it an hour,” he said.

“It is the spine of the road network here in Penrith, and we need to make sure that as the population grows, that we invest in infrastructure to ensure our roads, rail and our services keep up with that.”

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies welcomed a $100 million funding boost for the first stage of the project and said the corridor is expected to ease more than just congestion with bus travel times to improve and better pedestrian paths and cycling connections to be introduced as well.

man is recovering in hospital after being stabbed in the back at St Marys on Monday night.

In a horrifying end to the Easter long weekend, police responded to a call for help at a unit block in Saddington Street, St Marys about 8.30pm on Monday.

The victim, a 53-year-old man, was suffering from a single stab wound to his back.

He was transported to Westmead Hospital. Updates on his condition were not readily available as the week

Police established a crime scene at the unit block and are continuing their investigations.

Meanwhile, police are investigating another stabbing on the same night in Cranebrook. Police and paramedics were called to Martley Way around 8pm after reports of a brawl and the stabbing.

Around the same time, a man selfreported to Nepean Hospital with a stab wound, claiming to have come from the Cranebrook area.

Anyone with information about either incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers.

The changing face of High Street ALENA HIGGINS

he changing face of Penrith continues unabated, with Council giving the nod to another high-rise apartment block.

Soon, two single storey dwellings at 134-140 High Street will be torn down, making way for a six-storey apartment block comprising 49 units and a 60-space basement car park.

As Penrith’s population continues to surge, it appears inevitable that so will apartment living, with more old houses being demolished and replaced with multi-rise living.

Councillor Jim Aitken said the area, at the Eastern end of High Street near Nepean Hospital, was ripe for such developments.

“You can’t get enough units up there near the hospital for staff,” he said.

Cr Aitken said Penrith’s changing landscape signalled progress, but acknowledged not everyone would be happy with the transition.

He admitted he himself wouldn’t want to see the city go “all units” but pointed out low density housing was unsustainable.

“If we continue to spread out and all have 1000 square metre blocks then it becomes unaffordable,” he said.

“Where I live they are widening the roads and I’m going to lose some of my

yard. I’m not happy about it... but I’ve got to put up with it.”

According to a report prepared for Councillors, the existing character and context of the area is expected to undergo a “significant transition” after it was recently gazetted and “up-zoned” to High Density Residential.

“Council has already approved a number of buildings of this scale in the surrounding streets, however at this stage, none have commenced construction,” the report states.

Councillors approved the development application with a number of special conditions, despite initial fears it would negatively impact the neighbouring heritage building, Kelvin Brae federation house.

Traffic and parking, privacy, overshadowing, decreased property values on adjoining sites, smell from waste, a wind tunnel effect and tree removal were also raised as issues of concern in three submissions regarding the proposal.

Cr Aitken said the applicant, Md Shahin Khan and Shahnawaz Khan trading as Aadhar Developers Pty Ltd, had worked closely with Council to alleviate the concerns of the owners of the heritage site, who were “happy with the outcome”.

The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) is expressing its concern about the health and welfare of unvaccinated horses, particularly those at equestrian events, in relation to the Hendra virus.

AVA spokesperson, Dr Ben Poole, said that a vaccine is the most effective way to prevent the spread of the disease.

“There’s still so much we don’t know

about the Hendra virus – even the early signs of this disease can be extremely vague,” Dr Poole said.

“The fact is that endurance events bring together a large number of horses from a wide range of geographical locations, and this instantly raises the risk of Hendra virus infection if horses have not been vaccinated.

PUBLIC NOTICE Protection of the Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation 2002 Notice of Conditions for Approval to Burn (Rural Areas) 1 April to 30 September 2017 This approval applies only to rural zoned properties in Wallacia, Mulgoa, Kemps Creek, Mt Vernon, Londonderry, Llandilo, Castlereagh, Berkshire Park, Cranebrook, Orchard Hills, Luddenham, Agnes Banks, Badgerys Creek and Regentville.

In accordance with the Protection of the Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation 2002, Penrith City Council hereby grants general approval for burning in the open of dead and dry vegetation that originated on the property where the burning is to be carried out. This approval is restricted to the suburbs nominated above and to single land parcels that are 4,000 sqm (one acre) or greater in area.

If your property falls within NSW Fire Brigade area, a Fire Permit must be obtained from the NSW Fire Brigade prior to the commencement of the burn.

This approval is granted subject to the provisions of the Protection of the Environment Operations (Clean Air) Regulation 2002 and the following conditions: 1. Only dead and dry vegetation, where the vegetation originally grew on the same property shall be burnt in accordance with the Rural Fire Service ‘Standards for Pile Burning’ June 2003; rfs.nsw.gov.au 2. All fires are to be pile burns where the pile is not to exceed 2 metres in length or width, and must not be greater than 1.5 metres high. Any logs over 150mm in diameter are not be added to the pile.

3. Burning under this approval must at all times be carried out by such practicable means as are necessary to prevent or minimise air pollution. Burning should not be carried out during periods of high wind or when the weather conditions are likely to cause smoke impacts on sensitive receptors such as schools, nursing homes, childcare centres or other residences.

4. All reasonable measures should be taken to ensure that the material being burnt is not wet or green.

5. Only dead and dry vegetation is to be burnt. Plastics, rubber, chemical and pesticide containers, and the following specific prohibited articles are not be burnt: (a) Tyres, plastic coated wire, paint/solvent containers and residues (b) Timber treated with copper chromium arsenate (CCA) or pentachlorophenol (PCP) or painted timber (c) Grass clippings and leaves are not considered suitable due to the excessive smoke and alternative methods of disposal should be sought 6. All fires are to be a minimum distance of 20 metres from any building, areas of natural vegetation and 10 metres from all property boundaries.

7. In the event of a Total Fire Ban being declared this approval is suspended. Any existing fire is to be extinguished and is not to be recommenced until the Total Fire Ban is lifted.

8. In the event of a No Burn Day being declared by the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) this approval is suspended for the duration of the declaration. When a No Burn Notice is issued, it applies to the lighting of new fires in the declared areas. Existing fires are allowed to continue in accordance with the conditions of the No Burn Notice, as extinguishing the fire would result in more smoke.

Such notice must specify the person’s name, contact number, the location, purpose of the proposed fire and time that the fire is proposed to be lit.

A responsible supervising adult over the age of eighteen shall be on site at all times with enough water to extinguish the fire, if required, for that time the fire is active.

Burning shall only be conducted between the hours of 8am–6pm on any day.

Any residue waste from the burning must be disposed of in an environmentally satisfactory manner and in accordance with the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 and the Protection of the Environment Operations (Waste) Regulation 2005.

On the completion of the burn, the burnt area must be maintained in a condition that minimises or prevents the emission of dust and prevents sediment or ash from fires being washed from the area into surrounding waterways (natural or constructed) including creeks, stormwater drainage lines, dams or ponds.

This approval remains in force from 1 April to 30 September 2017 or until the commencement of the Bush Fire Season if declared earlier.

This approval does not apply to: 1. The burning of vegetation resulting from land clearing undertaken without development consent. Vegetation arising from land clearing can only be burnt in accordance with this general approval and if allowed under a development consent issued by Council.

2. The burning of packaging associated with agricultural operations.

3. Ecological/bush regeneration burns which are carried out to destroy infestations of noxious weeds, or to clear land for native species regeneration. Prior to any burning of vegetation on any property where there are known threatened species, populations, ecological communities of any known Aboriginal relics, individuals and organisations must obtain advice from the DECC contact below. Individuals and organisations that wish to carry out these burns should apply to the Manager Metropolitan Projects and Support, Department of Environment and Climate Change (NSW), PO Box 668, Parramatta NSW 2124.

Conducting open burning that does not comply with the conditions of this approval may result in an on-the-spot penalty notice of $500 for an individual or $1,000 for a corporation. In the event of prosecution for such an offence the maximum penalty is $5,500 for an individual and $11,000 for a corporation.

Teen parents spark search

Jayden and Jenifer speak to 7 News Two teenagers who took their newborn baby from Nepean Hospital unnoticed sparked a major search late last week as concerns grew for the pair and the child.

15-year-old Jenifer Morrison and 14-year-old Jayden Lavender were found several hours after a public appeal was launched, along with their baby Aria.

The pair have sparked a public debate this week about teenage parents.

It is understood baby Aria remains in the care of Family and Community Services while investigations into the situation continue.

The pair told 7 News that they want to be the best possible parents to Aria despite their young age.

“She means the world to me… when I first saw her, it’s a feeling like no other,” Jayden said.

“She looks exactly like me as a baby… it crushes me that she had to go.”

Jenifer said she feels “broken and just really torn up”.

457 is no more The Federal Government this week announced it would scrap the 457 Visa program for foreign workers.

It will instead create a new temporary visa restricted to critical skills shortages.

The new Temporary Skill Shortage Visa program will comprise two streams – Short Term and Medium Term – and will be underpinned by more focused occupation lists that are responsive to genuine skill needs and regional variations across Australia.

Short Term visas will be issued for two years, while Medium Term visas will be issued only for more critical skills shortages and for up to four years.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said it will give Australian job seekers better opportunities to find work.

Tribute to Merv About 30 members and friends of the Penrith Community Men’s Shed gathered at the Tench Reserve boat ramp last week to officially launch the Shed’s latest and biggest project, ‘The Merv’.

‘The Merv’ is a single seater canoe built at the Shed under the Baptist Church in Morello Terrace in the suburb of Caddens.

The canoe was built from scratch by many of the club’s members, led by Brian Moran.

The canoe is named ‘The Merv’ after the founding member of the Shed, Merv Adlington, who sadly passed away in late 2016, after a battle with cancer. Merv’s wife Robyn attended the launch last Wednesday.

Penrith: Officers swoop on shoplifters in special operation

Officers from Penrith Local Area Command arrested nine people during a shoplifting operation last Thursday, April 13.

Six charges were laid and four juvenile cautions were issued.

A number of businesses and licensed premises were targeted by shoplifters and with assistance from Loss Prevention Officers, Penrith Police were successfully able to combat local theft.

Charges laid included trespass, goods in custody, shoplifting and outstanding warrants.

on Sunday, April 16. The man entered a licensed premises on Station Street, Penrith where he took the victim’s bag.

He then fled to the railway station where police found the man in a drug affected state, carrying two backpacks.

They spoke and cautioned the man, and later discovered that one of the backpacks belonged to the victim from the bar.

At 1.50pm the male was then arrested at Derby Street, Penrith and is set to appear in court on Tuesday, May 16.

He was charged with ‘damage property,’ ‘resist arrest,’ ‘possess prohibited drug’ and ‘stolen goods in custody’.

Police investigating possible link between car fires

Penrith: Man stole documents and equipment from hospital

There were three car fires over 24 hours in the Penrith area over the Easter long weekend.

The first occurred on Russell Street, Emu Plains at about 10.35pm on Friday, April 14.

A few hours later, a second car was found alight at Penrith Railway Station Car Park at 1.22am on Saturday, April 15.

The third car was on fire at Kiaka Crescent, South Penrith at 11.15pm on Saturday.

All three cars were damaged in the fires.

It is not known if the fires are linked.

Penrith: Man arrested after violence at NRL match

One Panthers fan took their loss last Sunday at Pepper Stadium very emotionally, taking a swing at another spectator.

At about 6pm, Police were called to the incident at the football where it is alleged the 34-year-old male threw a punch.

After running past police, they were able to arrest the Cranebrook man for affray.

He was issued a Field Court Attendance Notice for Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, May 16.

Penrith: Man facing multiple charges after backpack theft

A 39-year-old Penrith man was arrested after stealing a backpack at about 1.30pm

At 1am on Monday, April 17 a 39-year-old male was at Nepean Hospital in Emergency acting suspiciously.

Staff asked him to move on, and watched as he continued to raise suspicion while leaving.

They contacted police, who then stopped and spoke to the man a short time later on the corner of Parker and Lethbridge Streets.

Police then found some documentation from the hospital that was stolen, as well as some medical equipment.

He was arrested and charged with stealing.

St Marys: Witness chases down armed robber on Queen Street

At about 2.35pm on Thursday, April 13 a man entered a pawn broking business on Queen Street, St Marys, with his face concealed.

He allegedly threatened staff with a hammer before smashing a glass display cabinet and stealing jewellery.

The man fled the scene into the East Lane car park but was chased by a witness, who restrained the man until police arrived.

The 21-year-old was taken to Penrith Police Station and charged with ‘robbery whilst armed’.

His bail was refused, and he will appear in Penrith Local Court on Friday, April 28.

Dividing property in a divorce or separation When parties to a marriage or de facto relationship decide to go their separate ways it is usually necessary to enter into a property settlement.

In Australia there is no presumption that matrimonial property should be divided equally between parties to a separation or divorce.

The Courts will take a range of factors into account when determining how matrimonial property should be split, including when and how assets were obtained, whether there are children and custody questions involved and who has contributed what to the asset pool of the parties.

It is important that you obtain legal advice from a family law solicitor even if your relationship with your ex-partner is amicable and you have reached agreement.

he State Government has denied it has a plan to slash peak hour rail services in Penrith, with State MP Stuart Ayres describing such reports as “farcical”.

The ABC reported on Wednesday that the Government was considering plans to cut several peak hour services from Penrith, Kingswood and Werrington.

Documents, obtained by the ABC after a three-year legal battle against Transport for New South Wales, reveal that a 2018 concept map suggested Penrith was set to lose four of its 11 current morning peak services.

It would be political suicide for the State Government in Penrith.

State Member for Londonderry, Labor’s Prue Car, said the documents should “strike fear into the heart of commuters”.

“That will impact thousands upon thou-

sands of commuters. We know that trains are already overcrowded in a region where the population is exploding,” she said.

“Western Sydney deserves better, we need more trains, not less as more people choose to make areas like Penrith their home.”

Erskine Park resident Darren de Kretser, who catches the train into the city for work each day, said the suggested cuts would be disastrous.

“People that get on at St Marys and

Mount Druitt may not even be able to fit on trains as they have already passed through Penrith, Kingswood and Werrington,” he said.

“Suburbs such as Jordan Springs, Mulgoa Rise and Caddens have seen the population grow in the Penrith district, so there is going to be a need for more train services not less.”

On Wednesday, NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance declared the ABC’s report fake news.

Union hopes to raise the bar in Penrith Penrith’s first ‘small bar’ has opened its doors on High Street – and it’s set to be a major success EMILY NEWTON

fter a long wait for its liquor licence, Penrith’s first small bar finally opened on Wednesday night.

Owners of the Union Restaurant, James McPherson and Celia De Oliveria, are excited to bring more nightlife to Penrith at their Union Bar. “We started back in May when we first took rent of the space and started the whole process,” Mr McPherson said.

“The Council application was reasonably quick, but the Liquor and Gaming took a long time.”

Almost 12 months since the journey began, the interest in the Spanish-themed bar has only grown with locals.

“We’re sticking with the theme upstairs, it will still be Spanish with a lot of Spanish wines,” Ms De Oliveria said.

“It will definitely be booming on the weekend, we hope it will be the talk of the town.”

The opening comes as Penrith City Council launched their ‘SPARK’ strategy to encourage a strong night time economy and revitalise the city centre.

These additional car parking spaces will not eventuate until the Council-owned Union Street Site is sold (Plan to solve Penrith’s parking crisis, Weekender April 14). Then the decision on whether or not it will be paid parking will be the responsibility of the new owner. Whilst the existing site has 631 spaces of free parking, it may end as 1631 spaces of paid parking. This site has a capacity greater than 1631 spaces in a multi-level car park and no explanation has been given as to why 1000 additional spaces has been deemed appropriate. If the city is crying out for extra car spaces then maybe more than 1000 additional spaces is necessary for this site. This figure of 1000 additional spaces was increased to 1115 when Council Officers made their presentation at the Public Hearing and now it is as low as 778 additional spaces. If the projection is for 10,000 additional jobs then 778 additional parking spaces is definitely not enough additional spaces for this site. If parking is not available then the jobs will not eventuate.

Bloodbath on race tracks Horse racing’s ever-growing bloodbath continues to shock and horrify even those who profit from it. Earlier this month, a jockey died and two others were seriously injured in a three-horse fall in

Warialda in NSW, while in Sydney a race was abandoned when another fall saw the horse Almoonqith killed on the track in front of thousands of spectators after he broke a leg. When even racing commentators describe a horse race as “absolute carnage”, it is clear that enough, for this vile industry, is far more than enough.

An average of over two horses per week die on Australian racetracks, usually with little fanfare. Horses are raced too young and too hard and their bones are not up to the immense impact and stress. They routinely suffer from injuries, lameness, and exhaustion. Horses are whipped and forced to run at break neck speeds. And to keep them running when they should be resting and recuperating, they may be given painkillers, muscle relaxants, and anti-inflammatory drugs. All this leads to broken legs and death. For those horses who manage to survive, few will be retired to grassy pastures. The vast majority of owners are unwilling to bear the costs of horses who aren’t making them money.

Unwanted horses typically are shipped to slaughter. Any death on the racetrack is tragic and unnecessary. But at least jockeys have the choice to be involved.

For most of the horses, except for the tiny minority who win big money, there is no choice but a cruel, painful, and untimely death.

Cancer Council Community Programs Coordinator, Natalia Atcha, said NSW has the lowest number of palliative care specialists per capita in the country.

“We’re asking for 10 more full-time palliative care physicians, 129 more palliative care nurses and culturally appropriate services for Aboriginal Australians, especially in western Sydney,” she said.

ran Cini’s family have experienced their fair share of cancer, with her sister, mother and husband all having fought the battle.

It was her husband’s diagnosis that made her first take part in Relay for Life.

“My husband had a melanoma removed, that was seven years ago,” Ms Cini said.

“It was stage one when he had a biopsy, and only six weeks later it was stage two.

“We’re just about to celebrate our 34 year anniversary, but I just think, we almost didn’t make it to 30.”

As the co-captain of the 2017 Penrith Relay For Life, Ms Cini said it’s important to remember that cancer can happen to anyone.

“It’s a real eye-opener, and it’s really daunting to realise you can lose someone so quickly from something so small,” Ms Cini said.

After Ms Cini’s mother was diagnosed with liver cancer in September last year, she has witnessed the importance of palliative care firsthand.

“I just look at my mum and how quickly she has gone downhill,” she said.

For Brooke, helping others is simply a part of everyday life EMILY NEWTON

very night, 11-year-old Brooke Jones goes to sleep under her life motto that sits above her bed, ‘if you can dream it, you can do it’.

Every day she wakes up and goes above and beyond to achieve this.

Founding her own charity, Brooke’s Car Rally, when she was just seven-yearsold, Brooke has currently donated over $40,400 to charity.

Last week she donated $13,528 to the Nepean Cancer Care Centre to help support the facilities of the centre for patients and their family members.

Dr John Taper first met Brooke and her family 10 years ago when he began caring for her mother, Amanda Jones, who was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma a decade ago.

“Ever since Amanda was diagnosed and completed treatment, the whole family has been involved in charity,” Dr Taper said.

“They go out of their way, they don’t have to do this, but they do.

“The whole family is amazing, a child is not an island.”

Ms Jones said that being proud of Brooke is an understatement, as her family stuck together as she underwent treatment at the hospital.

Brooke had only just turned two-yearsold when Ms Jones was first diagnosed.

“It was hard, but you just get on and do what you have to do,” she said.

This never give up mentality has been passed on to her daughter, as Brooke believes everyone has the power to help change the world.

“Nothing is holding you back, if you want to do something, just do it,” she said.

ollowing on from last week’s article, introducing the concept of ‘growth mindset’ for the way you operate in business, this week’s article focuses on using it in leadership.

In case you missed last week’s article, here’s a quick re-cap on growth mindset: according to Dweck (the person who developed this concept), “In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits�. Conversely, “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work – brains and talent are just the starting point.�

Dweck has found that leaders and organisations that place a high value on learning (ie growth mindset), and are open to feedback, have far healthier workplaces and more success overall.

In an organisation that is focused solely on talent and intelligence (ie fixed mindset), research has shown that employees are likely to lie about problems, rather than admit mistakes.

This failure to report issues creates

lost opportunities for the company to find strategies and solutions, so that mistakes aren’t repeated in the future.

By applying a growth mindset, leaders can promote a culture that accepts mistakes as a way to learn and then improve. Many workplaces spend too much time on grading and evaluating people, instead of developing their skills. This can only happen in a culture of continual learning, where there is investment in programs and strategies to encourage new or enhanced skills.

Having a growth mindset as a leader of your business creates a culture where employees feel valued. This in turn increases the likelihood of those employees pursuing innovative projects, because they are not worried about ‘failing’.

The culture of your business can be one where innovation, collaboration and commitment to learning and growing is the norm.

In general, applying growth mindset seems to foster happier employees who are motivated to take risks to achieve their objectives.

You can safely run competitions to promote your business, but there are laws and guidelines to obey. Remember the law is there to protect people from scams and fake competitions, it’s not trying to block your business.

It is best to give away something your business sells or is directly related, so entrants are potential clients.

Trade Permits All states have laws about running promotional lotteries. If your business operates in multiple states or online, you will need to check all state/ country requirements. For instance, you may need to limit entry to the competition to NSW or Australian residents only, or exclude a specific state. In NSW, Trade Permits are required to run any form of giveaway that is “trade promotion� – promoting your business, where a game of chance or luck is used. To avoid the requirements you can run a skill based

Skill based competition Skill based can mean a number of things, but a good one for business is running a “Tell us in 25 words or less ‌â€? competition. This can allow you to conduct market research on things like why customers love your business, or why they want to win your product. This may help when marketing the business.

Facebook or channel guidelines As many competitions are run on Facebook, I’ll cover this here. Facebook competition guidelines appear under Page Guidelines. Often you’ll see competitions that require people to like the page, tag friends and share on their timeline as a condition of entry. They are breaching Facebook guidelines (tagging or sharing cannot be an entry condition) and risk both the competition post and the entire page being taken down without warning by Facebook for breaching their page guidelines.

Love the thought of picking lemons, limes, oranges or mandarins from your garden? Why not plant a citrus tree this autumn?

If you’re working with a small outdoor space like a balcony, a dwarf citrus tree grown in a pot is the perfect space-saving solution, with full-sized fruit from a tree half the size.

Start with a sunny spot. Before planting in the ground, mix soil with compost to create the good quality, welldraining soil citrus trees you love. If planting in a pot, you can’t do without a special-

ised citrus potting mix. After planting, surround your tree with five to seven centimetres of organic mulch, making sure the mulch doesn’t touch the trunk, to prevent fungi. RUMOURS PERSIST » The speculation surrounding Matt

Moylan’s captaincy at Penrith is unlikely to go away any time soon. While it would most likely be buried if the Panthers strung a few wins together, those close to Moylan are worried about his ability to handle the captaincy of such a young and inexperienced side. The recent situation in Melbourne, which led to him being dropped to reserve grade for a week, certainly wasn’t the start of the talk about Moylan’s captaincy credentials – it just highlighted the issue publicly. The preseason hype about Penrith didn’t help either. I’d expect the 25-year-old to hold on to the captaincy at least in the short term, but I’m tipping both Moylan and the club will do some soul searching in the next off-season and we may potentially see a change for 2018. There’s still many who believe that change may come sooner rather than later.

» Talking of Moylan, he was certainly

hurting after the loss to Cronulla but put on a brave face at the post-match function back at the Leagues Club, smiling for photos with fans and signing autographs.

He also had to put up with a few jabs from unhappy fans, including one who, while smiling proudly getting a photo next to the Panthers skipper, told him that a few more line breaks would help next week.

A decent crowd was on hand to meet the players post-match, a good sign that the loyal Members are sticking by their under-pressure squad.

» I reported last week that Viliame Kikau was close to re-signing with Penrith and on Sunday the club announced a new two-year deal for the exciting forward. The contract extension means the 22-year-old Fijian international will remain with the Panthers until at least the end of the 2019 season. “I’m really excited to re-commit to the club and I’m very thankful for the Panthers giving me this opportunity,” Kikau said. “I know there are challenges ahead but I am looking forward to them.” Kikau made his debut for the Panthers in round two.

» Cronulla captain Paul Gallen has

blasted Penrith officials after wives and girlfriends of the Sharks players were only given general admission tickets to last Sunday’s game at Pepper Stadium. Gallen is apparently horrified that the players’ partners had to put up with sitting on the hill on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Penrith, mixing it with the people who pay their hard earned to see people like Gallen play. “Our wives and partners sat on the hill. They are supposed to get seats,” Gallen fumed to the Sydney Morning Herald. “That was another thing that was extra motivation for us, too. I thought that was pretty ordinary, too.

I don’t know what the situation is here with seats but I know every seat wasn’t full.” Before he shot his mouth off, Gallen should probably have been made aware that general admission seating at Penrith also includes fairly extensive parts of the seated terrace areas. The Panthers have since admitted they sent the Sharks the wrong tickets by accident. Let’s accidentally do the same thing next year.

» Phil Gould generally handles the poten-

tial conflict between his dual roles at Penrith and in the media pretty well, but his comments earlier this year about Cronulla winning a “soft competition” in 2016 certainly came back to haunt him last Sunday (although, they were taken out of context). It probably wasn’t highlighted enough just how much Cronulla took those comments to heart, and used it as motivation for last weekend’s match. After humiliating Penrith, the words “three cheers for Gus” could be heard coming out of the Sharks dressing room. With Gould and Paul Gallen far from friends, and a number of ex-Panthers in their team, there is no doubt that the Sharks lift when playing the Panthers these days.

Meanwhile, it’ll be interesting to see what Fairfax Media’s attitude is towards both Gould and the Panthers moving forward.

Gus recently moved on from his role as a columnist with the Herald, a gig which previously led to reasonably positive coverage of Penrith from Fairfax reporters.

o start by stating the obvious, it’s quite clear there’s a problem at the foot of the Mountains.

After seven rounds, the Panthers sit awkwardly placed in 13th spot on the NRL ladder having collected just two wins (against lowly Wests Tigers and Newcastle) and five losses, a record nobody could have anticipated during a pre-season dominated by hype.

No longer can we say ‘it’s still early’. In fact, no Penrith side has ever made the finals after such a poor start to the season, so this squad would be history makers if they managed to turn it all around.

Webster wrote this week that Penrith “have so much talent they don’t know what to do with it” and it’s an excellent point. At least, we hope it is. Because if somehow this squad isn’t right, if by some weird quirk club officials have got this all wrong, then we’ve got an even bigger problem on our hands given it’s the same squad we’ll have in 2018 and well beyond that. This is the team, give or take a few comings and goings, that will represent Penrith for the next handful of years. And we should have every confidence that it will eventually click.

Perhaps in all the excitement about 2017 we forgot that Penrith had the most inexperienced halves pairing in the competition. At the moment, it’s showing – neither Te Maire Martin (who to be fair did have an impressive start to the year) or Nathan Cleary are standing up and owning the team’s attack.

Cleary has become bomb-happy, even when it would be best to put in a long kick and build pressure. And when he did put a little grubber in last week in the hope of earning a repeat set, nobody chased it, as if they didn’t expect it to happen.

At the end of the first set after half-time, Cleary put up yet another mid-field bomb.

The Sharks took it essentially uncontested – so what was the point?

All of this, as well as a plethora of notes I can’t fit into this article, points to a playing group that is playing as individuals and not as a team. That’s not to say egos are at play – far from it – but it honestly appears as though the side doesn’t know what its next move will be at any given time. Nobody is standing up and owning the team, and Cleary and Martin, at least at this stage of the season, appear to be suffering from a dash of second year syndrome.

So what does it mean? Patience, I guess.

Ah, that dreaded word that has been part of Penrith’s vocabulary for way too long.

Coach Griffin is certainly showing that patience, naming the same 21-man squad as last week to play Parramatta on Saturday. I would expect some late changes – Bryce Cartwright has been named in jumper 21 but will almost certainly play, while James Fisher-Harris is nursing a shoulder injury and is in serious doubt.

It’s also worth a pretty hefty head scratch as to why Griffin went with Peta Hiku, Tim Browne and Moses Leota on the bench last weekend ahead of Corey Harawira-Naera, Viliame Kikau and Sitaleki Akauola. I’d expect there to be at least some re-shuffling of that bench on Saturday.

This is a season-defining game for Penrith. For that reason, I think desperation will be enough inspiration for a win.

Tip: Panthers by 6.

anthers fullback Matt Moylan says he’s not “pulling the pin” as captain of the club but does admit he needs to work hard to earn back the trust of his teammates.

Earlier this week, the 25-yearold local junior opened up about his recent axing from Penrith’s first grade side as well as the challenges of being a leader.

After breaking team curfew following a night out in Melbourne, Moylan along with Waqa Blake and Peta Hiku were dropped to reserve grade by coach Anthony Griffin as punishment.

Moylan said the club had strict standards and he failed to meet them on that fateful night.

“It was disappointing I put myself in

that position, I only have myself to blame there,” he said.

“Hook told us at training that we weren’t playing [against the Rabbitohs] and that we let the side down.

“We’ve got standards here and we didn’t meet the standards.”

Moylan said he apologised to his fellow teammates for his actions that night, and that he would need to work very hard to repay them.

“The boys were disappointed I put myself in that situation, they were probably frustrated that I did it as well,” he said.

“It’s something that I’m going to have to repay everyone for and keep working hard to not let that happen again.”

Following Moylan’s axing, questions have been raised regarding his position as captain of the Panthers.

When Moylan was surprisingly unveiled as skipper by Griffin last year, many people questioned if the then 24-year-old was the right man for the job.

“It’s a role that is new to me and I’m growing into it as well… I’m still learning on the run,” he said.

“I’m certainly not pulling the pin. Hook and I had a chat about stuff last week but nothing has changed, I was always captain.”

With senior players like Peter Wallace,

Trent Merrin and James Tamou surrounding him, Moylan said the side is in good stead out on the field.

“I don’t think I’m the biggest talker [but] we’ve got leaders out on the field that do a good job as well in Wal, Mez and Jimmy Tamou,” he said.

“You’ll find that Wal will say a bit, Mez will say a bit and I will say a bit – there’s not just one of us out there leading, there’s a few of us.”

enrith Panthers utility Peta Hiku has opened up for the first time after getting dropped earlier this month for breaching team protocol.

Along with skipper Matt Moylan and fellow back Waqa Blake, the 24-year-old was demoted from Penrith’s NRL side to take on the Rabbitohs back in Round 6, due to breaking a team rule after a night out in Melbourne.

Speaking with Extra Time on Monday, the former New Zealand international said the recent controversy was a “wake up call” and one he has learned from.

“I’ve accepted the punishment,” Hiku said.

“Every coach is different and Hook thought that was the best decision for our team and I reckon it gave me a wake up call. I’m certainly not holding a grudge or anything.”

Following their axing to reserve grade, the ‘party boys’ were forced to play in

front of a smattering of loyal fans in St Marys the day after Penrith’s one-point loss to Souths.

“It wasn’t too bad playing in St Marys, it was different,” Hiku admitted.

“It certainly was a big wake up call not being with the first grade side.”

After a week of exile, Hiku, Moylan and Blake all made their returns to first grade last Sunday in Penrith’s 28-2 defeat to the Sharks.

The 26-point hammering was Penrith’s worst loss at home in years and their third straight defeat of the season.

Hiku said the mood at Penrith HQ “wasn’t too bad”.

“It’s been better,” he said.

“I think we are more frustrated than anything. With the team we’ve got we can do better. But it’s not going our way, we’re not building our own luck.

“When it comes to game day we are obviously doing something wrong, it’s something we are going to have to change.”

Since returning from a busted eye socket in Round 3, Hiku has been relegated from Penrith’s starting side to a utility role off the bench. It has placed some question marks over his long-term future.

“Since my debut at Manly I’ve been in and out of different positions and I suppose that’s still the same here,” he said.

“I don’t mind the role coming off the

bench, playing in the back-row is a lot of work – a lot of defence.”

With Bryce Cartwright due to return this week, Hiku will be battling to keep his position in Penrith’s side for this Saturday’s clash against Parramatta, despite being named on Tuesday.

Time to lay off Moylan and let him grow as skipper

enrith Panthers captain Matt Moylan has certainly had an interesting couple of weeks, both on and off the field, but the first thing we have to remember is that he’s a young bloke, who is still learning to be a man.

A lot of opinions have been expressed of late regarding Matt’s captaincy role at the Panthers and whether he is still the right man for the job.

It’s easy to give the captaincy to the oldest player on the team or the guy who has played the most games, but that might not always be what’s best for the club.

When Matt was given the captaincy role last year, Penrith had a real eye for the future and they see him being a one club player. I enjoyed my time playing under Matt, even though it wasn’t for long.

He brings excitement to a game and, as an older player, it was fun to play with young guys like him.

For the two and a half years I was at Penrith, I got an inside knowledge of these young guys at the club and how they react and respond at certain times. To me, they’ve all been model citizens.

Matt didn’t treat anyone in the public disrespectfully, he didn’t do anything wrong. He made a mistake and the club took a stance on it.

Matt recently came off a fantastic year where he played Origin, took his team to the Finals and went on a Four Nations tour – I regard him as Penrith’s best player.

This whole situation has turned into a big deal because the side hasn’t been winning of late. Penrith have now lost three in a row, are struggling in attack and this issue has been made much bigger than it should be.

Let’s judge Matt at the end of the year and, if being captain is too much for him, maybe Anthony Griffin and Phil Gould should sit him down and reassess the situation.

But, at the moment, we are only seven rounds in and everyone should worry about Penrith winning more games than who is captain.

Do we really want Matt to relinquish the captaincy?

Do we really want kids to not aspire to be a leader of their local club one day?

I don’t think so.

Why we hate the Eels

I

t’s the battle of the west this weekend between arch rivals Penrith and Parramatta, and as every Panthers fan knows, thou shalt not like the Eels. If you needed any help figuring out why, here’s a handy 12-point guide as to why we don’t like our next door neighbours.

1. They’re Parramatta.

2. Michael Jennings. A Penrith junior playing for the Eels, a team he once said he hated. Enough said!

3. They beat us 19-18 in extra time at Penrith Stadium back in 2012. Not something any Penrith fan wants to see. The pain is only just now subsiding.

4. Back in 2009, they beat us in a crucial game late in the season. A win would have put us in the top eight. We’ll never forget the heartbreak.

5. They’ve won almost 60 per cent of their all-time matches against us. Just not on and it’s time the stats turned in our favour.

6. The Eels helped draw Penrith’s two biggest ever crowds at Penrith Stadium (22,582 in 2010 and 22,304 in 2003). We’d rather let Rabbitohs fans in for free just to see the Eels’ name off the Panthers’ record books.

7. Round 1, 2002. It still gives us the chills.

The Eels won 64-6 at Parramatta Stadium and Luke Burt scored two tries and kicked 10 goals for a club record 28 points. What a bloodbath.

8. ANZ Stadium. A once great venue being tainted by the Eels calling it home.

9. Their headquarters is located on “Eels Place”. Oh please.

10. That time they beat us 64-6. So bad we put it in the list twice.

11. They’ve won more premiership titles than us.

12. That time in 2010 when Penrith led 22-0 at home, only to be beaten 34-28. Any comeback hurts, but when it’s the Eels coming back at you, it hurts even more.

Not a great night for Panthers fans.

Former Panther Michael Jennings getting belted by the Penrith defence But hang on, we’re not that cruel. There’s a few reasons we LIKE the Eels: 1. They’ve won 13 wooden spoons.

2. They choked in the 2001 Grand Final, somehow losing to Newcastle after dominating the entire season and going into the match as short-priced favourites.

3. Back in 1993, they got beaten 68-0 by Canberra in round 21. The game should be released on DVD. 4. From round 10, 1959 to round 10, 1960 they lost 19 straight matches. If only they could repeat that feat.

5. Sterlo. No jokes here, we actually really like him.

6. The fact that they won the minor premiership in 1896, according to the NRL Media Guide. Typical Eels, claiming they won something 12 years before rugby league even began in Australia. (By the way, that error has been in there for five years – cut and paste is a curse!)

8. They don’t have a major sponsor.

Good business move by every company in Australia.

Rivalries are a wonderful thing. Let’s hope Saturday’s chapter lives up to the hype, and the past.

We reckon such a battle deserves much more build-up from the NRL.

enrith have won premierships, produced superstars of the game and had great success over the years, but one of the most significant days in the club’s history was way back on April 23, 1967.

It was on this day that Penrith Park was officially opened – the venue that would go on to be the hallowed turf that so many memories were made on, and continue to be made on.

With the Panthers granted a place in the 1967 competition, work was feverish in late 1966 to get the ground ready.

When it opened on April 23, 1967 it looked nothing like it does now – many upgrades over the years have taken away the bulk of the 1960s heritage that existed at the venue.

The team that played against the Dragons on April 23, 1967 the ferocious Dragons, a side that had won 11 straight premierships.

The Dragons were obviously the favourites, but Penrith were keen to commemorate the opening with a victory and ran out 24-12 winners.

The day will be remembered sadly for St George fans, with the legendary Reg Gasnier suffering a broken leg early in the contest.

Coached by Leo Trevena, the Panthers scored four tries on the day through Russell Johnstone, Grahame Moran, Wayne Peckham and Maurie Raper.

The legendary John Raper scored for the Dragons, as did Brian Clay, while Graeme Langlands kicked three goals.

Laurie Bruyeres was the referee.

The crowd on that day was 12,201 and each one of them witnessed something very special in the history of not only the Penrith Panthers, but Penrith as a city.

Nobody could have foreseen on that day what would happen to rugby league over the next 50 or so years, nor would they have expected that the Panthers would still be running out at the same location in 2017.

Country sisters are on the rise

hose in-depth life chats at the beauty salon become a whole lot more interesting when your beauty therapist is a country music star.

During the week Victoria Baillie works at Beauty By Rachael-Lee in Penrith, but on the weekend she takes to the stage with her sister Barb as part of the country music duo Baylou.

“A lot of my clients know what I do,

which is awesome,” Victoria told the Weekender.

“It’s really rewarding when they come in and say ‘I downloaded your song’ or ‘I saw your video clip’. I’ve even had clients rock up to gigs, which is great.”

The pair are no strangers to the country music scene, with Victoria winning a Golden Guitar for Best New Talent in 2010, and sister Barb working as a touring musician for artists like Adam Harvey, Beccy Cole and Troy Cassar-Daley.

The sisters spent much of their childhood performing together, so it came as no surprise when they decided to combine their musical talents.

“It’s great working with your family

because you know you can really rely on them and trust them,” Victoria said.

“We also have the same common goal and the same dreams, so it’s really nice to be working towards that with your sibling.”

Last month the pair released their new single ‘Rattlin’ Chains’ from their upcoming EP. It’s Baylou’s first release in four years and the pair had their hearts set on making their return a big one.

“We wanted to make an impression and come back onto the scene with a bang,” Victoria said.

“So we wanted a really strong song and ‘Rattlin’ Chains’ is so edgy and definitely grabs people’s attention.”

Along with a new release comes touring and Baylou are planning on heading back to Europe next year after receiving a warm welcome from audiences during their 2015 trip.

“During our first tour some people had clearly done their research and listened to our songs online before we got there,” Victoria said.

“We were on the other side of the world and audiences were singing our songs, it was just amazing.”

Baylou are hoping to spend a few months in Europe to give audiences a proper taste of Aussie country music.

“It’s great to be branching out into other countries,” Victoria said.

hey were two of the icons of rock in the 50s and 60s, and now Lucky Starr and Roland Storm are back on stage celebrating 60 years of rock ‘n’ roll in Australia.

The pair will be heading to the Blue Mountains Theatre along with their multi-talented band to bring their hits to life.

This young man was very timid, after a while he became more settled and was happy to have more to do with us. He is on the thin side and will need some good quality food and of course the love and affection of a good family.

Ned is a very sweet and playful pup who was surrendered by his owners at just 6 months of age. He will sit and stay when asked, he accepts treats gently and would make a good companion for most homes.

How could anyone not love this girl, sadly she has been used as a breeding dog and after not being collected by her owners she is now ready to be desexed and live the puppy free life!

When it comes to falls, prevention is better than cure Many of us think falls only happen to elderly people, but the risks are there for younger people too...

One in three people over the age of 65 and one in two people over the age of 80 are at risk of a fall that will lead to a serious injury.

For people over the age of 65 you are three times more likely to end in hospital after a fall.

However, falls do not just occur in the elderly or people aged over 65. Falls are common in younger adults and can be as a result of numerous chronic conditions such as vertigo, stroke, lower limb neuropathy and muscle weakness.

Risk factors that can contribute to falls include; strength, balance, coordination, walking speed, gait imbalances, poor vision, medication and reduced sensation of lower limbs.

Exercise can help to improve most risk factors associated with falls and decrease your chance of falling. A study that was recently completed in Australia concluded that three hours of high challenging balance exercise per week slashed your risk of falling by 40 per cent or more. Falls prevention is more than just balance training; exercise should cover the five main points below.

Strengthen your lower limbs Stronger lower limb muscles especially the calf muscles can significantly reduce your risk of falls.

Gait imbalances This will help to improve walking stride, stride length and help minimise your risk of tripping over your own feet and also incorporate correct use of walking aids.

Balance and coordination High challenging balance exercises are proven to help reduce the risk of falls.

Upper limb strength This will help with your falls recovery strategies and give you the ability to pick yourself up after a fall.

Walking speed A minimum walking speed of 3.0km per hour is recommended to stay safely active within the community.

Falls will result in a fear of falling, social isolation, avoidance of activity and decrease a person’s quality of life.

Falls prevention classes are recommended to increase a person’s confidence and ability to be active within the community and stay independent.

Purring is one of the most endearing and unique qualities of domestic cats.

Most people cannot resist smiling when they hear a cat purr and will happily sit with a purring cat beside them or on their lap.

Purring is normally regarded as a sign of pleasure or being content, however cats will also purr when they are stressed or in pain.

Purring is used to communicate between mothers and kittens, between cats within social groups and as a means of communicating with us. Kittens can purr before they open their eyes. It has been suggested that purring may have evolved as a means of communication that cannot be heard by predators.

It is often reported that only domestic cats purr, but this is not correct. All cats belong to the Felidae family, consisting of two subfamilies, the Pantherinea and Felinae. The Pantherinae subfamily contains the big cats including the tiger, lion, leopard and jaguar and they have evolved to roar. They can purr when exhaling but the vocal cords are used

for roaring and cannot be used for a true constant purr. The Felinae subfamily contains cats that vary from the domestic cat, lynx, ocelot up to the puma and cheetah. These cats produce the constant purr we hear from our domestic cats.

The Guinness Book of Records’ loudest purr from a domestic cat belongs to a cat in England, Merlin, whose purr reached 67.8db, this is higher than normal conversation between humans.

There is still confusion about exactly how a cat purrs. The purr is made up of both noise and vibration. It is thought to originate from a central nervous signal that causes oscillation of the vocal cords.

The frequency of purring is very constant, normally at a range of 25-150 hertz. Vibrations in this range at low decibels have been regarded as beneficial for healing. It is believed that the frequency of vibration that occurs when a cat purrs may have not only calming effects but also healing qualities. Purring during birth may reduce the pain and help with post partum healing. Several studies

on the effects of purring have shown a reduction in stress and a positive effect on wound and bone healing. Purring has been shown to reduce stress and blood pressure in humans. Purring has many more powerful properties than just displaying pleasure.

When it comes to nutrition we tend to associate certain foods or food groups with certain nutrients.

For example, if I say calcium you’ll probably automatically think of milk and dairy foods.

But while each nutrient tends to have a ‘poster food’ there’s plenty of other options on the menu.

Protein Meat has become synonymous with protein but there are other protein-rich options that can help provide variety in your diet. These include: • Nuts and seeds • Dairy • Legumes • Wholegrain foods (such as breads and cereals) • Eggs • Soy products Iron Along with protein, iron can also be found in foods other than meat.

Keep in mind though that non-haem iron (the iron found in plants) is not as well absorbed as haem iron (the iron

found in animal sources) so it’s best to couple iron rich plant foods with foods high in vitamin C, which aids in absorption. Iron rich foods include: • Green leafy vegetables • Nuts and seeds • Wholegrain foods (such as breads and cereals) • Eggs • Legumes Calcium Dairy is a great source of calcium, but if you’re lactose intolerant or choose not to consume dairy products there are other calcium sources to look out for. These include: • Calcium fortified plant milks (such as

soy, almond and rice) • Green leafy vegetables • Tofu • Almonds • Tinned sardines and salmon (the bones contain calcium) Fibre For some people – including those with coeliac disease – many grains are off the menu due to their gluten content.

But this shouldn’t mean that you miss out on fibre, which is important for bowel health.

Easter has come and gone. Christian people all over the world have remembered the death, and then celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ. But what happened next?

In particular, what happened to Jesus?

Did he, after his resurrection from the dead, as some think, go on living in Jerusalem, teaching his disciples, grow old, finally to die a peaceful death?

In the opening chapter of the Bible’s book of Acts, we read how after Jesus’ resurrection, on numerous occasions he appeared to his disciples for a period of 40 days.

In this time Jesus called them to be his witnesses, spreading his life transforming message throughout the world.

We then read how Jesus was taken up into heaven right before the eyes of his disciples.

As his disciples stood watching this extraordinary event, two angels spoke to them, “Why do you stand looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him

go into heaven.”

The rest of the Bible tells us that right now, Jesus is ruling all things in heaven, giving comfort and hope to all those who trust in him.

But also, as the words of Acts tell us, one day, Jesus will return to take those who have been waiting for him, to be with him in heaven.

This might be a staggering thought, not only that Jesus is alive now, but that one day Jesus will return!

Yet, this is a key promise in the Bible, one that cannot be overlooked.

Right now, Jesus is ruling in heaven, calling all people to trust and follow him, then, to be ready for his return. Are you ready?

oyota’s HiLux has taken an early lead as Australia’s best-selling vehicle in 2017 after topping the sales charts last month.

HiLux has become the only vehicle in the Australian new-vehicle market to pass 10,000 sales (10,333) this year. Its stablemate Corolla is in second place (9,909).

Ongoing strong demand for these two popular models, as well as for other Toyota vehicles including Camry, RAV4, LandCruiser Prado and LandCruiser wagon, has lifted Toyota to its strongest March sales in seven years.

Local motorists bought 19,652 Toyota vehicles last month – a figure that is greater than the combined totals of its two nearest competitors.

The March tally represents a gain of 10.1 per cent compared with March last year.

Toyota’s sales increase of 1,803 vehicles for the month exceeds the entire industry’s growth which was just 898 sales.

Toyota Australia’s Executive Director Sales and Marketing, Tony Cramb, said the company was targeting continued growth across its range of passenger cars, SUVs and light-commercial vehicles.

“Toyota is gaining ground in all three areas, which reflects a trend by motorists to stick to brands they trust during a time of varying results across the industry, This is enhanced by the rock-solid reputation of Toyota vehicles,” he said.

Cupples adds to his trophy cabinet p.58 NATHAN TAYLOR

t was certainly a whirlwind Easter break for young Penrith Panthers basketball junior Tahlia Tupaea.

Not only did the 19-year-old sign a new two-year deal with the Sydney Uni Flames but the very next day she found out she was drafted into the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

Making the exceptional achievement even more remarkable was the fact the former Glenmore Park local didn’t even know she was in contention to be drafted.

Speaking with the Weekender, the Australian guard said getting drafted by the three-time champion Minnesota Lynx will be a moment she’ll never forget.

“I didn’t even know I was getting drafted, nor did my agent. We were going to try for next year’s Draft as I had an injury last year that set me back a bit,” Tupaea said.

“When my name appeared on the screen, my agent rang to tell me I’d been drafted – I was stoked and amazed.”

Tupaea, who was selected in the third and final round of the 2017 WNBA Draft, said she was watching a basketball tournament with her parents on Good Friday when she was flooded with text messages about the news.

“I was out for the day, watching some basketball in Manly with family,” she said.

“I kept getting these text messages saying ‘congratulations’ – I thought it was just because I signed a new two-year deal with the Flames the day before.”

Tupaea also received a text from her agent telling her to answer the phone.

“I asked him what was wrong and then he told me I’d been drafted to the Minnesota Lynx,” she recalled.

“I was shaking, it was crazy.”

The Minnesota Lynx are one of the top franchises in America’s WNBA, last winning the championship back in 2015.

“They are a world class organisation, I’m just grateful for the opportunity they’ve given me,” Tupaea said.

Tupaea confirmed she’ll likely play the next WNBL season with the Sydney Uni Flames before linking up with Minnesota next year.

Grants boost local sporting clubs

ocal golfing legend Laurie Cupples has been swinging a golf club for exactly half a century, with 40 of those wonderful years as a member of the Leonay Golf Club.

Last week the 62-year-old Emu Plains resident was crowned champion of the NSW Veteran Golfers Association Strokeplay Championships.

It was the first time Cupples had won the prestigious seniors tournament, which was held at various courses across western Sydney including Richmond Golf Club, Glenmore Heritage Valley and Stonecutters Ridge.

With high class golfers from around the state descending on the local area for the competition, Cupples said it was a tough tournament to win.

“I was up against a couple of previous winners, who were knocking on the door, so it was good to sneak a win over those two,” he told the Weekender.

“I was equal leader after the first two rounds but enjoyed a solid final day and ended with a four shot margin.”

Cupples is certainly no stranger to success on the golf course, having racked up more than 40 titles in four decades.

He’s even won a number of champion-

NSW Sports Minister Stuart Ayres and State Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies awarded the grants to clubs, which aim to increase regular and ongoing participation opportunities in sport and active recreation through targeted investment.

President of St Clair Netball Club Joanne Bissett received two grants on behalf of her club.

She said the $7000 grant will have a twofold impact to improve operations.

“This grant aims to keep entry fees at a minimum, which we hope in turn will encourage more young players to participate,” she said.

“Additionally, these funds will be allocated for the development of coaches and trainers with accreditation courses, giving more people confidence to volunteer.”

“I have a bit of a family affair going,” he said.

“I’ve won with many others in the past but doing it with family is just that bit more memorable and special.”

Cupples spends upwards of five times a week with a club in his hand, working on his stroke and putting ability.

His passion for golf is truly undeniable.

“I just really like golf. Even when I have a bad round I want to get back out there the very next day and work on what I did wrong,” he said.

“I enjoy the outdoors and company over at Leonay. The club’s been good to me and so have the people.”

Leonay Golf Club President Kevin Small praised Cupples’ longevity in the game, saying he’s the best there is.

“Laurie is without doubt Leonay Golf Club’s most successful Pennants player, having represented the club in the winning major Pennant team, as well as being a member and captain of the A grade pennant team, mixed and masters pennant teams over his fabulous career,” he said.

Baseball club is one step closer to USA trip after success at NSW Little League Championships NATHAN TAYLOR

reater Western Baseball will feature at a national tournament for the first time ever – with a shot at international glory – thanks to the recent success of their Senior League Division side in the NSW Little League Championships.

Held at Blacktown International Sportspark last week, the local team of 15 and 16-years-olds dropped only one game in the pool round before beating Newcastle in the playoffs to qualify for the Australian Little League Championships, to be held in Lismore next month.

If the local side manages to take out the prestigious tournament on May 19, they’ll progress to the World Series, to be held in South Carolina, USA. Greater Western Baseball Association President, Michael Bryan, said it was a really exciting achievement for the young brigade.

“The coaches came to me 12 months ago with a clear focus to make the Nationals, and I’m really proud to see their plans come to fruition, putting the stamp on the sport for our great region,” he said.

“Throughout the tournament I heard plenty of positive comments, not just about how the team played, but also

However, one immediate hurdle remains. Baseball Australia’s equal access approach for the National Championships means every team across the country is charged the same tournament fees covering travel and accommodation, which means the team has less than three weeks to fund the trip, which will cost over $25,000.

Both games will be played this Saturday at the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre.

AUSSIE RULES: After a mixed start to the season, the Penrith Rams Division 2 side will return to the field this Saturday against the Manly Warringah Wolves. Penrith’s top AFL side will be looking for back to back wins when play gets underway at 11am at Weldon Oval in Curl Curl.

Giants will do battle with the UTS Shamrocks at Trumper Park Oval in Paddington.

AFL: The GWS Giants are well and truly on a roll after disposing of Port Adelaide 112-81 last Saturday in Canberra. GWS will look to make it four in a row when they battle cross-town rivals the Sydney Swans this Saturday night at the SCG. It’s expected to be a tough clash for the Giants, who are up against a desperate Swans side yet to record a win this season.

NETBALL: After enjoying the Easter long weekend off, Giants Netball are back in action this Sunday afternoon when they take on the Collingwood Magpies in Round 9 of Super Netball.

The Giants currently sit atop of the competition while the Magpies remain a distant fourth.

RUGBY LEAGUE: The Penrith Panthers lost their SG Ball Qualifying Final against the Cronulla Sharks last weekend but will live to fight another day. The Panthers went down to the Sharks 28-20 last Saturday, but will advance to take on the Sydney Roosters in this weekend’s semi finals. The elimination match will be played at 11am this Saturday at UOW Jubilee Oval.

estern Sydney star Brendon Santalab has received a huge confidence boost ahead of the A-League finals after he was crowned the club’s Player of the Year at the Wanderers Medal on Tuesday night.

In what was his most prolific season yet, the veteran striker broke the club’s all-time goal scoring record, which now stands at 37 goals, and finished the regular season with a clubhigh tally of 14 A-League goals.

It’s the first time the 34-year-old has been named Player of the Year, which is voted by his teammates, in his four seasons at Western Sydney.

Upon accepting the award, Santalab labelled it the biggest achievement of his career.

“To be coached by the best, to have all the support from home, this is a dream come true,” he said.

“I hope next season I can take it to another level.”
