I

t took the greatest comeback in Australian football history for the Western Sydney Wanderers to secure a place in their third A-League Grand Final.

Not since the formation of the National Soccer League in 1977 has a team come back to win from 3-0 down, but the Wanderers made history once again last Sunday night as they fought back to defeat the Brisbane Roar 5-4.

It was a fitting farewell for the Wanderers at the current Pirtek Stadium site as more than 20,000 fans turned out to witness an all-time classic with nine goals hitting the back of the net.

However, it looked to be all over for the Wanderers after just 23 minutes with the home side rocked by three early goals. Fortunately a Romeo Castelen hat-trick and Brendon Santalab’s 11th goal of the season paved the way for substitute Dario Vidosic to snatch an extra time winner.

Speaking after the epic thriller, Wanderers coach Tony Popovic declared it a special night.

“It was a fantastic way to sign off this stadium in its current form,” he said.

“Our crowd was magnificent again. They helped us get back into the game, and they helped us in the end to close the game out.”

Western Sydney’s incredible heroics sees them qualify for their third Grand Final in just four years. They’ll take on an Adelaide United side who will also play in their third decider.

Both clubs have never won an A-League Championship but that’ll all change this Sunday when they clash in front of 50,000 fans at Adelaide Oval.

etween Penrith and St Marys alone, an estimated 11,000 people woke up before first light to commemorate the spirit of the ANZAC at local dawn services.

Penrith RSL sub-Branch President, Mick McConnell, said there were no less than 5,000 people at Memory Park at 5am on Monday morning to honour our bravest men and women.

He said though it seemed a smaller crowd than last year, it was a great turnout with noticeably more children and younger families.

“It’s good to see the younger generations and the younger families bringing their children along as we are trying to keep the message going,” he said.

Mr McConnell said it was a sombre morning, with Defence Minister Marise Payne in attendance and representatives from RAAF Richmond and Glenbrook, and from the Defence Establishment in Orchard Hills.

“Our local cadet units from the Army, Navy and Air Force were there, and we had a special guest Navy Captain Jenny Daetz,” he said.

“She shared a story about a sailor and his experiences on the HMAS Perth.”

According to St Marys RSL sub-Branch Secretary, Tony Fryer, crowds in St Marys toppled last year’s turn out of over 5,000 people.

“It’s the first time we’ve done it at 5am instead of 5.30am. The whole car park was full and we had people over towards the youth club,” he said.

“We never expected to have our audio go that far, which indicates that we may have had numbers up on last year.”

Mr Fryer commended Year 7 student Caitlin Spargo from Erskine Park High School for her moving tribute poem to the nurses of World War I. “It was a poem she composed in relation to the project we ran with local schools last year, when she was a Year 6 student at Clairegate Public School. She did a marvellous job in composing it and another marvellous job in reciting it,” he said.

Erskine Park High School also provided the band, and Cambridge Park High School provided vocals from students and their music teacher.

“We are absolutely over the moon about the support we get from schools,” he said.

“Schools really honour the occasion superbly.”

Crossing a very fine line Much has been said about the now infamous case of Sally Faulkner, ’60 minutes’ and that botched child recovery effort in Lebanon.

Not surprisingly, ‘60 Minutes’ trotted out the “we were just doing our jobs” line on Sunday evening as part of their initial explanation to viewers, at the same time admitting that they did make mistakes and confirming an internal investigation is underway at Channel Nine.

If only the case was as simple as that – journalists doing their job caught up in a misunderstanding with the Lebanese legal system.

But even journalists doing their job must obey the laws of the country they’re in – even if there may be an ethical standpoint to suggest otherwise.

There is no question that international custody disputes, like the one Sally Faulker is involved in, are of public interest. However, there’s a fine line between covering a story and putting yourself at the centre of it, especially when it comes to paying for stories.

While there’s a bit of confusion surrounding just what money did exchange hands, there seems no doubt that a payment was made to somebody

by Channel Nine to ensure this story took place, and that’s where the credibility of ‘60 Minutes’ comes into question.

Custody disputes are messy, complicated and often the truth is somewhere in the middle. It is very rarely the job of a journalist to ‘pick sides’ in stories such as this one.

But ‘60 Minutes’ has some form in not fully exploring both sides of a story and not meeting their editorial obligations.

Despite the story standing on its own feet as an inspirational tale of resilience and courage, ‘60 Minutes’ was desperate to find a villain for their story, and Australian, Melbourne and Queensland captain Cameron Smith was deemed to be that man.

It was a hatchet job of the highest order and for me raised very serious questions about the editorial policies and structures of ‘60 Minutes’.

The Sally Faulkner case is much more serious, but it again brings into question the very fine line between telling a story fairly, accurately and ethically, and chasing the best possible ratings result. Often the two simply don’t go hand in hand, and ‘60 Minutes’ quickly needs to decide what’s more important so its viewers know exactly where it stands.

Glory close for Wanderers The Western Sydney Wanderers are in the habit of giving soccer/football in Australia an injection of interest and excitement when it needs it most.

Last Sunday they did it again – coming from 3-0 down against Brisbane Roar to pull off a miracle comeback and emerge 5-4 winners after extra time, booking themselves a spot in this weekend’s grand final against Adelaide.

As we watch the remarkable story of Leicester City unfold in England, we now have our own fairytale to follow – and the Wanderers have an opportunity to complete it this weekend.

For a team that has achieved so much in its short history, a grand final victory has eluded Tony Popovic’s men so far. Just 90 minutes stands between them and the trophy.

Viva Las Vegas I’m writing this week’s column to you from Las Vegas, where outrageously, there is nowhere to watch the Panthers play (even a trip to a pub well off the strip revealed their live NRL coverage to actually be coverage of the Super Rugby).

What an incredible city this is – an absolute rebel, where almost anything goes and where sleep seems to be the lowest priority. One thing is for sure – Mike Baird wouldn’t be welcome here, especially if he was touting his lock-out laws!

After landing in a wind storm that would have blown the hair off a hippie, myself and my wife have had an absolute blast here – the size and scale of everything is simply astonishing.

And yes, the rumours are true – I did see Britney Spears live, and I might have even danced… a little.

Opposition asks local member when Green Bridge construction will start DALE DRINKWATER

t seems 2016 is not the first time the absence of a bridge along the Nepean River has been a concern.

On Tuesday, Member for Londonderry Prue Car and Shadow Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Jodi McKay asked why there is still no progress on the proposed Green Bridge.

They called on the State Government and in particular, Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres, to detail when construction will commence on the bridge.

“We have seen announcement after announcement but still no construction has begun,” Ms Car said.

It goes back to 2010, when Mr Ayres announced to improve pedestrian access across the river by fixing Victoria Bridge.

By 2013, the Government made a new commitment to build a separate foot bridge across the river, with construction to start in late 2014.

In December 2014, geotechnical investigations to determine the $24 million bridge’s alignment had only just begun.

Tenders for the construction were only just short listed by July 2015, the relocation of overhead power lines was to start late 2015, and building was expected to start in early 2016.

St Marys residents and business owners fear reclassified community land will result in less open spaces DALE DRINKWATER

he first barrier against further development in the St Marys CBD has been broken down, after Penrith Council reclassified community land.

Residents fear once the community land is reclassified to operational land, Council will sell the land to a private company to develop on, and lose open space in the town centre.

They fronted a Council meeting last Monday night speaking against the reclassification of land, that includes Lang Park and Kokoda Park.

Phillip Martin said it’s obvious the reclassification of Kokoda and Lang Parks is to facilitate the expansion of the St Marys Village Shopping Centre, by its parent company Mirvac Retail.

“Why would we want to take away community land and sell it to a developer?” he asked.

beneficiary, and that’s the St Marys Village Shopping Centre,” he said.

St Marys Town Centre Chair and business owner, Alex Karavas, said on top of this, there was no basic consultation from Council.

“No major stakeholders have been consulted,” he said.

“There is overwhelming evidence that the reclassified land will be sold to Mirvac.

If this is the intention, Council has a legal obligation to disclose this as part of the exhibition.”

However, Penrith Councillors reassured concerned residents and stakeholders that a reclassification of the land doesn’t mean it will be sold to Mirvac for development.

“It’s only the proposal on the reclassification, what happens after that has to be done through a transparent process,” Councillor Greg Davies said.

Cr Davies suggested that any future proposal on the reclassified land be considered by a working party, that is made up of community representatives and St Marys Town Centre Management.

Councillor Kevin Crameri tried to move an amendment to defer the final decision on the reclassification, that was voted against by all present Councillors excluding three.

Alarming rise in ‘ice’ use in local area Latest Crime Statistics show a 50.9 per cent increase of amphetamine possession in Penrith JADE ALIPRANDI

he possession and use of amphetamines in the Penrith Local Government Area has increased by a staggering 50.9 per cent in a 12 month period.

The latest results from the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) report show that while the NSW Police Force is driving down crime in seven major categories, there is still a concern in regards to the use of amphetamines in the area.

Methamphetamine is the most common amphetamine in Australia and comes in three forms including speed, base and crystal methamphetamine, otherwise known as ‘ice’.

The BOCSAR report shows that incidents of possessing or using amphetamines jumped from 232 offences from January to December 2014 to 350 offences from January to December 2015.

Former ‘ice’ user and Penrith local, David Collins, said the alarming growth isn’t a shock to him.

“It disappoints me, it really does but it doesn’t surprise me,” he told the Weekender.

“I know what people and families go

through with it and to think that there’s more going on now is really disappointing.”

Mr Collins used ‘ice’ on and off from 18-years-old up until he was 32. Now at age 36, he has been off ‘ice’ and other amphetamines for four years.

The turning point for him came when he split with his wife and hadn’t seen his four children for six months.

“By that point I had enough; I sought help and went to rehab for three months,” he said.

“A little while after that, I got back together with my wife and we moved with the kids.”

Mr Collins now works for Christ Mission Possible, a drug rehabilitation centre and is involved with a local church.

Now clean, Mr Collins has well and truly turned his life around and is now helping others do the same.

“A lot of the people I used to hang around, they’re not my friends anymore; I totally changed my life and for the better,” Mr Collins said.

Part of the reason for the increase in amphetamine possession and use is due to improvements in pro-active policing or detection of crime by police, a police spokesperson said.

COUNCIL BRIEFS ● Council is encouraging swimming pool and spa owners to act early in obtaining Certificates of Compliance to ensure any sale or lease of property is not held up. The State Government confirmed that from 29 April 2016 properties sold or leased with a pool or spa must have a Certificate of Compliance to meet regulations.

All Penrith residents, regardless of selling or leasing can apply for Certificates of Compliance to ensure swimming pools or spas are safe. A Certificate of Compliance is valid for three years and can be obtained from Council by lodging an application form.

Bringing dying trees back to life Local community encouraged to transform rotten and dead trees into wildlife havens DALE DRINKWATER

ocals have found another way to help conserve the critically endangered Cumberland Plain Woodland.

An innovative new approach to habitat conservation was demonstrated last week, to show residents how to use a chainsaw and create tree hollows to house native wildlife.

The joint initiative between the Greater Sydney Local Land Services, Penrith City Council and Sydney Arbor Trees aims to raise awareness on the importance of tree hollows for wildlife in the Cumberland Plain.

Greater Sydney Local Land Services officer, Jenny Schabel, said the high rate of population growth in the region has resulted in significant habitat destruction for native wildlife.

“We want to show people rather than cutting dead or dying trees down we can create homes for native animals, including many endangered species,” she said.

“We are looking at future opportunities to encourage, promote and implement hollow preservation, the potential is definitely there and at this stage we have only just scratched the surface.”

Arborist Michael Sullings said dead and decaying wood is a food source for insects and other invertebrates which are then an important food source for larger reptiles, mammals and birds.

“Alive or dead, trees containing hollows are habitat for all manner of organisms. It is time for us to rethink our approach, not all trees are hazardous,” he said.

“We would encourage people in the community in the process of having a dead or hazardous tree removed from their yards to consider this approach.”

Around 15 per cent of Australian vertebrate species use natural tree hollows for nesting, raising young and housing, and 40 of the 150 species of these are listed as vulnerable or endangered.

Mayor Karen McKeown said she was delighted in the preservation of trees, living or dead, to provide a habitat for native species.

“Native species including birds, possums and gliders will benefit from the initiative and complements other environmental work being carried out in Werrington Parkland, including weed control and tree planting,” she said.

“We need to be mindful in providing native animals a safe place in our suburbs as we encroach on their natural habitats.”

Mum fined and given good behaviour bond for stealing

Rehab is on the cards again for Katie Orcher after she was caught shoplifting at Westfield.

A restless Ms Orcher, 31, fronted Penrith Local Court on April 20 charged with ‘shoplifting’, ‘goods in custody’ and ‘entering a banned premises’.

The court heard the mother-of-two had been attending rehab for drug and alcohol dependence but was discharged after she had a disagreement with another patient.

Ms Orcher said she was committed to getting clean and getting her life back on track.

“I’m not just doing it for Court, I’m doing it for custody of my babies and to get my life back,” she said.

She was fined $300 for entering a banned Westfield premises and given an 18-month good behaviour bond for ‘shoplifting’ and ‘goods in custody’.

Man suffers “brain snap” and assaults a parking officer

A man who assaulted a parking officer after suffering a “brain snap” has been placed on an 18-month good behaviour bond.

Aaron John Curry fronted Penrith Local Court on Thursday where he pleaded guilty to common assault.

The court heard Mr Curry, who was shot in the leg in 2014 and suffers post traumatic stress disorder, was going to the bank when he parked illegally after failing to find a disabled parking spot.

Magistrate George Zdenkowski described Mr Curry’s behaviour as “totally unacceptable”, saying the victim not only “copped a mouthful, but a racist mouthful” and “an assault on top”.

“You have a long history of public order offences and violence offences, which is something I can’t completely ignore.”

Man told to take his life into a different, drug-free direction

A man who developed a “sophisticated”

cannabis operation has been slugged a $2,000 fine and ordered to complete 200 hours of community service.

Penrith Local Court heard Leo Yi Chun Chou, 30, had a “long-standing” and “significant problem with cannabis abuse” and started growing the 19-plant crop to satisfy his and his friends’ “heavy” use as well as for “some financial advantage” after watching internet tutorials.

Magistrate George Zdenkowski told Mr Chou many people go straight to jail for such a serious offence.

“The acid is on you to complete your order, pay the fine and use your 30th year to take your life in a different direction,” he said.

Former concreter disqualified from driving for three months

Shannon James Hickey has been disqualified from driving after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of drugs.

Mr Hickey, who had previously worked as a concreter, fronted Penrith Local Court on Thursday to face the charge.

Magistrate Stephen Corry said in contrast to alcohol that stays in the system for 12 to 18 hours after your last drink, drugs can remain in your blood for up to a month after you stop taking them.

“If you want to work I suggest you address your drug problem,” he said.

Mr Hickey was disqualified from driving for three months and fined $300.

Man “wasn’t thinking straight” behind the wheel

A scaffolder caught drink driving along a busy Penrith road has been stripped of his licence.

Matthew James William Hobson appeared before Penrith Local Court on Thursday where he pleaded guilty to midrange drink driving.

The court heard the father-of-two had been forced to get lifts or take two buses and sometimes up to three trains to reach his latest work-site in Bronte since he was

nabbed drink driving along Mulgoa Road on February 26.

A remorseful Mr Hobson told the Court he “wasn’t thinking straight” when he chose to get behind the wheel.

“I regret it. It was a silly mistake and I take full responsibility for my actions,” he said.

Mr Hobson was fined $600 and disqualified from driving for six months.

Woman drives car despite being suspended

Naomi Rebekah Faaloua has been ordered off the road for 12 months after pleading guilty to driving while suspended.

Ms Faaloua told Penrith Local Court on Thursday she drove while suspended as it was her only means of transport to get to work.

However, Magistrate Stephen Corry told Ms Faaloua she had turned a demerit point suspension into an automatic 12-month suspension.

“You should have stayed out of the car,” Magistrate Corry said.

The woman was convicted and fined $300.

“You’re a bit old to be starting to take up drugs now”

A local magistrate has warned a middleaged fly-in-fly-out worker to stay away from drugs or risk jeopardising his occupation.

Glenn Cowie fronted Penrith Local Court on Thursday after being found in possession of 1g of cannabis on February 24.

The miner told the Court “drugs don’t play a factor in my life at all”.

Magistrate Stephen Corry said he was “taking a chance” as he was subject to random drug testing as part of his mining job.

“You’re a bit old to be starting to take up drugs now,” he said.

The matter was dismissed and the drugs ordered to be destroyed.

Man sent to jail following drunken rampage

A Glenmore Park man who drank a litre of Wild Turkey and Coke before damaging a nearby house has been sent to jail.

Kyle Fielding faced Penrith Local Court via video link on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to one count of malicious damage.

The court heard the defendant was on parole for serious matters when he ripped the fly screen off an Avalon Circuit, Glenmore Park property about 4.30am on April 9 in a random attack.

Mr Fielding’s lawyer said his client had no recollection of the offence and “tends to binge drink” when faced with alcohol.

Magistrate Darryl Pearce said he was satisfied a full jail sentence was required.

“Clearly the defendant was there,” he said, referring to Mr Fielding’s fingerprints being found on the window behind the screen.

He is eligible for release on October 25, 2016.

Man charged with stealing $70,000 worth of property

A Cranebrook man charged with stealing more than $70,000 worth of property has been granted conditional bail.

Caine Sly faced Penrith Local Court on Wednesday charged with allegedly breaking and entering a partially fire-damaged workshop on March 25 and stealing engine parts and suspension products totalling more than $73,000.

Magistrate Darryl Pearce said the prosecution case, which centres around finger prints found on the outside surface of a large glass display cabinet, was weak.

“The case is not a strong one unless there is other evidence,” Magistrate Pearce said.

As part of his bail, Mr Sly is to report daily to Penrith Police Station and reside at his mother’s Dolomite Road, Cranebrook address.

The matter was adjourned to June 22 for reply.

Penrith: Teenager in trouble for a number of offences

A p-plate driver was stopped by police last week for a number of offences.

At about 8.10pm on Friday, April 22, police were patrolling Thornton Estate in Penrith when they saw a vehicle with no headlights on and its car boot open.

A 17-year-old male driver was issued with four infringement notices for ‘drive with no headlights’, two tickets for ‘passenger ride in boot’, and ‘negligent driving’.

His vehicle was also defected.

Penrith: 14-year-old boy caught with toy gun

A boy had a big talking to by police after an off-duty officer witnessed an incident that could have turned out to be a frightening one.

At about 5.30pm on Wednesday, April 20, two men were observed walking east along Henry Street in Penrith.

A member of the public and an off-duty police officer both witnessed a 14-yearold boy pull out what appeared to be a firearm from the back of his pants and point it at the other boy before he put it back in his pants and kept walking.

The boy was approached by the off-duty police officer who questioned him.

It was realised that the ‘weapon’ was a child’s toy.

The 14-year-old was dealt with under the young offenders act.

Emu Plains: Officer punched by woman on ANZAC Day

A police officer was assaulted on ANZAC Day while he was doing routine patrols in Emu Plains.

At about 6.20pm on Monday, April 25, police approached a 22-year-old woman in a licensed premises on the Great Western Highway as she was displaying aggressive behaviour.

The woman, from Ropes Crossing, allegedly punched a male police officer in the face after she was spoken to.

She was arrested and charged with ‘assault police officer in execution of duty’, and is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on May 23.

Emu Plains: Man arrested for break and enter

A man was arrested after he allegedly broke into a house in Emu Plains on the weekend.

At about 1.55am on Sunday, April 24, police saw a man riding a mountain bike in Emu Plains.

Officers stopped him and subsequently searched him.

An amount of property was found in the man’s possession with police questioning the man in regards to what they found.

It was revealed that the property was stolen from a break and enter in Emu Plains earlier that night.

He was arrested and charged with five offences and was released on conditional bail.

The St Marys man is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on May 11.

Police unhappy after road toll rises during long weekend

Police say they are astounded by the results of Operation Go Slow, as drivers continue to take lives into their hands, despite numerous warnings and a high number of deaths on NSW roads.

Operation ‘Go Slow,’ the ANZAC Day long weekend traffic operation, started at 12.01am on Friday, April 22 and concluded at 11.59pm on Monday, April 25.

Double demerits were in force during the period for all speeding, seatbelt, helmet, and mobile phone offences.

Police conducted 217,339 breath tests, up 44,301 compared to 2014, which resulted in 244 people being charged with drink-driving, down 142 from 2014.

During the operation eight people died on NSW roads, 4,304 people were issued infringement notices for speeding, and 6,440 infringements for other offences including phone and helmet offences.

Big changes to swimming pool laws ahead Part of the great Australian dream is to own a property with a swimming pool.

If you already own one, then you need to be prepared for new laws surrounding swimming pools that come into effect this Friday, April 29.

The laws are aimed at improving swimming pool safety and compliance by forcing owners of properties with swimming pools to ensure that they are compliant before they rent or sell a property.

There are two arms to the new laws: Selling your property If you are selling a property after April 29 that has a swimming pool or spa pool, you must ensure that your contract includes: • a valid swimming pool certificate of compliance or relevant occupation certificate issued within the last three years AND; • a certificate of registration.

If you try to sell your property without these documents attached to your contract and the buyer finds out about it they will be able to withdraw from the purchase and get their deposit back without penalty.

Renting your property to a tenant If you rent a property to a tenant that has a swimming pool or spa pool you must ensure that any residential tenancy agreement entered into on or after April 29 includes: • a valid swimming pool certificate of compliance or irrelevant occupa-

Obtaining the necessary documents There are two ways you can obtain a certificate of compliance for your swimming pool/spa: • Make an application to your local Council to come and inspect your pool. If it is compliant they will issue you with a compliance certificate.

If it is not compliant they will issue you with a work order to complete repairs/alterations that you need to complete before you will receive your compliance certificate.

• Engage an accredited swimming pool certifier who must be registered with the Building Professionals Board. The process is the same, they will inspect your pool but only issue you with a compliance certificate if your pool is compliant.

Once you receive your certificate of compliance it is valid for three years from the date of its issue.

You can register your swimming pool (which is different to getting a compliance certificate) by contacting your local Council.

Some councils even allow you to do this online.

Remember, if you do not have the relevant documents by tomorrow, Friday, April 29, you put your contract for sale or residential tenancy agreement in jeopardy.

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Penrith Councillor Jackie Greenow has been congratulated for her 21 years of service at Penrith Council. During her time, Ms Greenow has been a champion for women in local government and a passionate advocate for St Marys. In her honour, Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown contacted the Roads and Maritime Service to change the street lights at one or two crossings in St Marys from a ‘green man’ to a ‘green lady’. The change would respect Ms Greenow’s two decades serving Penrith, where she served five terms as Deputy Mayor, and one as Mayor in 2004 to 2005. Ms Greenow’s Councillor colleagues commended her, and said she doesn’t play politics, she’s polite, a listener and honest.

Council has received an application to build a boarding house at 45 Park Avenue, Kingswood. The boarding house, sometimes known as a lodging house that provides accommodation for a fee, would have 29 rooms on a 681 square metre block of land. The building is proposed to have the rooms spread across three levels, with underground car parking. The $1.5 million project would see the demolition of existing structures on the block, including a single residential dwelling, a rear shed and a swimming pool.

The food truck would have been paying just $200 a week for trade on a Saturday night from 5pm to 10pm.

Currently 65,000 residents leave our City to commute daily for work. If we cannot keep providing jobs locally to the growing numbers of residents, then this number will increase placing even more pressure on transport infrastructure.

To achieve our vision of a vibrant, desirable and truly liveable city we need better infrastructure, affordable housing and better connections between people, services and transport.

$10.4 million boost delivers 168 new local aged care places Older Australians in Lindsay are set to benefit from a substantial increase in funding for aged care services, announced by the Australian Government this week.

Over 17,000 new care places across the nation will be rolled out, worth an estimated $910 million.

Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott, said it’s great to be able to meet the demand.

“There is a strong demand for aged care in Lindsay and these additional places are essential in ensuring our elderly receive the quality care they deserve,” she said.

168 newly approved residential care places will be established across the electorate through an investment of $10,416,000.

A further $817,000 has been allocated for

newly approved home care.

The Turnbull Government has also announced $67 million in capital grants to help approved providers establish new services or upgrade existing facilities.

Locally, Anglican Retirement Villages will be one of the service providers delivering Federally funded services.

Emmaus to plant 500 trees

tudents at Emmaus Catholic College are gearing up to plant 500 trees that belong to the critically endangered Cumberland Plain Woodland.

After they were approached by Greening Australia as the college is part of the Cumberland Plain area, science teacher and organiser of the project, Meike Corbin, said they wanted to help in any way they could.

“It’s really important to keep the woodland thriving as we are basically at the beginning of extinction, with Australia possessing one of the highest extinction rates in the world,” she said.

“To have the children involved is important too as it is crucial for them to understand our native flora and fauna.”

Several planting days will be held, with the first one next Tuesday, May 3, with eventually around 2000 trees planted in the area by this time next year.

Emmaus Catholic College sits on around 44 hectares of land but are generously offering 10 hectares to Greening Australia’s Cumberland Stepping Stones Program.

Over 276 hectares of native Cumberland Plain will hopefully be re-vegetated through the project to create a corridor for plants and animals to thrive in.

“The program is all about creating a natural Cumberland Plain Woodland Zone where animals can move freely, being able to move from Richmond down to where we are and up to the Blue Mountains,” Ms Corbin said.

The Cumberland Stepping Stones Program received an almost $2.9 million grant from the Federal Government.

“I’m very excited to be involved in this project that will potentially change the environment I work in and that will be a better place for our students,” Ms Corbin said.

The Cumberland Plain Woodland is a critically endangered habitat that only has about six per cent of its native area left.

We’re allowing disrespect to become a normal part of growing up.

By doing so, we are unintentionally part of the problem.

We can all become part of the solution.

If you want a new job, you’ll find one in Penrith DALE DRINKWATER

ccording to the latest unemployment figures, if there’s anywhere you’ll get a job, it’s Penrith.

Penrith currently has more people employed than the rest of Australia, with unemployment sitting at 4.36 per cent, over one per cent lower than the nation’s 5.9 per cent.

But don’t fear, that doesn’t mean all the jobs are already taken.

Michael Downey, Business Development Manager at local recruitment agency Complete Staff Solutions, said despite the high number of employment, recruitment agencies are as busy as ever.

“Thanks to the local, state and federal governments investing funds in western Sydney, our business is able to run at 100 per cent capacity,” he said.

“18 months ago we had 400 employees out everyday working with our clients, and as of this month we are up to 1000.”

Mr Downey pointed directly at Government investment for the high number of jobs and falling unemployment rate.

“Governments have committed about $2.2 billion worth of infrastructure a year for the next 10 years, and 90 per cent of that is dedicated to western Sydney and

the lower Blue Mountains,” he said.

“Right now the employment rate is lower but it’s because there’s more work from the investment.”

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said the falling unemployment rate showed that Penrith Council’s drive to provide local jobs was starting to pay off.

“In just over a year the unemployment rate in Penrith has fallen 2.37 per cent. This is equivalent to almost 2,500 more local jobs,” she said.

“This trend can be attributed to the housing boom, combined with a strong infrastructure agenda. It’s also validation that our city is changing – and changing for the better.”

However, there is still a lot of work to be done with research showing the increasing jobs will not be enough to support the growth in population over the next 20 years.

Author of The Addressing Western Sydney’s Jobs Slide report and Director of the Centre for Western Sydney, Philip O’Neill, found the number of jobs available in the region is falling behind the number of new residents.

“If this trend continues, the growing number of commuters travelling to work will strangle Sydney and crush the capacity of roads and public transport,” he said.

Drivers continue to disobey I read the Law and Order column (From the courts, Weekender April 14) and nine of the 11 cases listed involved drivers who were caught driving under the influence of alcohol and/drugs, or driving without a licence or being disqualified. This has become a really big problem with many drivers thumbing their noses at the law and putting law abiding road users and pedestrians at risk of serious injuries and even death. Our police certainly have their work cut out for them and our support must be given to them without question.

Panthers NRL Academy My husband and I have resided in Penrith for 57 years and have been Panthers members for 50 years.

We recently had the good fortune to take our grandson Ryan, on a guided tour through the new Rugby League Academy which was recently completed. From our first steps inside this fantastic facility, we were totally impressed, firstly by the lovely young lady on the reception desk, the new coach Anthony Griffin, Grant in administration, Royce Simmons and our special friend John Farragher. In fact, everyone we met there, including the players, were so hospitable and welcoming.

auditorium, and two full sized training fields were mind-blowing. Our lovely football players now have the best of both worlds.

Penrith now has a first class facility and congratulations are extended to everyone who was involved from start to finish.

Big players team up for better rail Western Sydney Rail Alliance formed to fight for sensible rail links for local residents DALE DRINKWATER

new coalition has been formed to help current and future residents cut their travel times and spend more of their day with their families.

The new Western Sydney Rail Alliance will work to provide residents with a rail line connecting Marsdsen Park in the north, to Campbelltown in the south.

Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown, said to maximise productivity and realise the region’s potential there needs to be more connections between these North West and South West Growth Centres.

“Rail will re-shape the region and be followed by new town centres that are thick with jobs of the future,” she said.

The rail line is envisaged to pass through the ‘innovation corridor’, alongside the future Sydney Science Park, major regional residential and employment zones, and the future western Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek.

Western Sydney Rail Alliance Convenor, Christopher Brown, said it’s not just about making the most of the opportunities from the future airport, but about connecting western Sydney with western Sydney.

The Western Sydney Rail Alliance is comprised of Penrith, Liverpool and Campbelltown Councils, Sydney University, south-west and north-west landowners, the Committee for Sydney and Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue.

Deloitte and Arup have been appointed to prepare a detailed submission for the NSW and Federal Government’s investigation into rail options for western Sydney.

uide Dogs NSW/ACT is calling on the local community to refrain from distracting working guide dogs with their new campaign called ‘Respect My Uniform’.

In 2015, a staggering 89 per cent of guide dog handlers reported that their dog had been distracted by members of the public in the past 12 months.

People often place the safety of guide dog handlers at risk by patting, feeding and interacting with the guide dogs, who are tasked with assisting those who are blind or vision impaired.

Penrith Guide Dog Mobility Instructor, Carole Grayson, said it’s important not to touch the working dogs.

“What people don’t realise is that by touching a guide dog while it’s working, they can be distracting the dog when it’s needed the most,” she said.

“It takes the dog’s energy and focus away from what they’re doing and it will look for that person who distracted it or look away which could get the dog, or the handler, in trouble.”

Penrith resident, Allan Windley, was born with ocular albinism, and after years of using a white cane, he was presented with his guide dog, Aidan, just over two years ago.

“Taking Aidan with me instead of using a white cane makes a huge difference when I’m travelling somewhere, particularly when I’m walking around

hen I started my business over 10 years ago, I thought I was starting it at the perfect time. I was about to go on maternity leave so I would have HEAPS of time on my hands to get my business going (parents everywhere are now rolling around on the floor in fits of laughter at my pre-first child naivety!).

Of course that wasn’t quite how it all panned out!

But while there were things that were not ‘perfect’ about my timing, it was also a good a time as any.

The advantages were that I didn’t have to quit my job to start the business, and I had planned to cut back on hours (and therefore my pay packet) in that season of life anyway.

The disadvantages were that with the quite small amount of time I had on my hands between caring for a new baby meant that my business started slower than I had anticipated or wanted.

But if I had waited for a ‘perfect’ time to start, I really don’t think that time would have ever come.

Most aspects of running our own

business involve a level of risk: sometimes it’s super risky, other times it’s just a bit of a stretch of yourself or your resources.

Just like there’s never a perfect time to start a business, there generally isn’t a perfect time to branch into something new.

It is simply a case of you deciding that now is the time to do it, after taking into account the relevant risk factors.

Waiting for the ‘perfect’ time means you will miss opportunities.

If you know you have a great idea, waiting until ‘all the planets align’ is a great risk.

Yes, there may be some failures along the way, but those failures will teach you a great deal more than sitting on your hands, waiting for the right moment.

And quite often, the really great ideas come not from a perfectly executed plan: they are more likely to come about via trial and error, or by making a mistake and being forced to find another way to succeed.

So what are you waiting for?

T

he smart, successful employers hire people with the right skills to get things done. If you’ve hired right, your staff should in most cases be more qualified than you in the job you’ve hired them to do.

Your success depends on their success.

I see many employers getting in the way of proven staff. An employer’s role is to provide guidance, direction, and establish goals, not sit on their shoulders telling them what to do every step of the way.

You should also be there to get them the resources, time, and support they need.

You should be the one who deals with company politics, bureaucracy, and the many other barriers to progress that exist in business as it is today.

Developing and treating your people the right way is so important for a business.

Here are some tips: Have clear, two-way communication.

Brave local man saves lives

I

t’s the story of a local man who 25 years ago, saved the lives of others thanks to his quick thinking.

South Penrith’s Gary Beamish saved an elderly couple in 1991, who were trapped under a three-tonne truck that had overturned on them in Rydalmere.

The driver of the truck had lost control at an intersection, and rolled onto the 70-year-old woman and her 74-year-old husband.

In a blessing for the elderly couple, Mr Beamish was stopped at the traffic lights at the time, along with another man in the vehicle behind him.

The two men immediately raced to help the couple, who had both sustained head injuries, the man a broken leg and his wife a broken hip.

“This stranger and I looked at each other and we both knew we had to try and lift the truck off the old folk,” Mr Beamish said.

“We noticed diesel fuel leaking from the truck and knew there was a distinct possibility the vehicle might burst into flames.”

Mr Beamish and the stranger then put their shoulders to the truck and pushed with all their might without any response.

“We tried a second time then were preparing for a third when [we] were joined on the other side by two policemen whose patrol car was about five or six vehicles back from the traffic lights,” he said.

“This time, our combined brawn managed to lift the truck and throw it back onto its base, freeing the old couple.”

Mr Beamish held a St John Ambulance

South Penrith’s Gary Beamish recieving his Bravery Award in 1992 senior first aid certificate, and used his experience to tend to the couple until the ambulance arrived.

He was praised for his bravery almost a year later, in a ceremony by then NSW

Police Minister, Ted Pickering.

“Both men are to be congratulated for their selfless actions – they acted quickly and without regard to their own safety,” Mr Pickering said.

Remember when...

From 1880, on the site of Penrith High School sat this building known as The Towers. After the 1900s when it was bought by a local doctor, it was remodelled to resemble a castle he had seen on holiday in Ireland. The building was demolished in the 1940s.

One year ago...

In the Weekender’s May 1, 2015 edition we took at look at the fast food revolution that kickstarted right here in Penrith.

Prepackaged foods from a business in Glenmore Park were taking on the fast food industry to provide a healthy alternative, and to tackle western Sydney’s obesity crisis.

After massive storms battered the region, concerns were raised over the prospect of housing in the floodprone Penrith Lakes Development.

St Dominic’s College in Kingswood was delighted to received a new ramp upgrade to enable increased access for students with a disability.

n Wednesday afternoon the Penrith Panthers boarded a bus bound for Bathurst where they’ll take on the Canberra Raiders for the second time this season. It’s always great when clubs take NRL footy to the bush and perhaps no one does it better than the Panthers, who will play at the historic Carrington Park venue for the third straight year.

Penrith’s record in the state’s central west has been mixed over the years. In 2014, they lost a tight one against the Sharks before belting the Gold Coast Titans 40-0 last season.

This Saturday’s clash against the Raiders could be anything, with both sides enjoying a rather inconsistent opening two months.

The Canberra Raiders can look like premiership favourites one week, while the next they look like a park footy side.

The Raiders were hammered for two straight weeks before going on to thrash the Wests Tigers 60-6 last Saturday in Canberra.

The Panthers on the other hand are consistent at one thing, and that’s giving every supporter a near heart attack week in, week out.

Last Sunday was another case this year when Penrith had the victory in the bag before relinquishing the lead to Cronulla in the dying minutes.

Despite losing half Te Maire Martin and centre Waqa Blake early on, the Panthers put on another brave and strong performance that deserved the two points.

This week I spoke with young forward James Fisher-Harris following a boxing session with none other than head coach Anthony Griffin.

Yep, that’s right, Anthony Griffin is Penrith’s version of Rocky Balboa in the

hit movie ‘Creed’ – trying to make his players mentally tougher than ever before.

“Hook likes it old school... it’s a mentality thing,” Fisher-Harris said of Griffin’s boxing sessions.

I must say I think Griffin is onto something because this Panthers side looks far more mentally tougher and stronger than in previous years.

Take last Sunday’s loss to the Sharks as an example. In the past, Penrith would’ve fallen on their sword if two of their attacking weapons went down, but that wasn’t the case at Shark Park with the Panthers fighting to the bitter end only to go down.

What we saw last weekend is what we’ve been seeing all season long – a tougher, resilient Panthers team that’s staying in the fight right to the very end.

This Saturday afternoon’s match against the Raiders could very well be one of those games.

at fullback, Jamie Soward at five-eighth, Peter Wallace at halfback and James Segeyaro at hooker.

The changes come after young half Te Maire Martin was ruled out for the season with a fractured shoulder while Wallace shifts from hooker to the halves to make way for returning number nine James Segeyaro.

With the band back together, I’m tipping a Panthers victory. Tip: Panthers by 10.

SHARKS FANS BITE » The Panthers will hit the Great Western Highway later this week for their annual NRL match at Bathurst’s Carrington Park.

This will be the third of a five game deal to be held at the country venue. Whilst attempting to beat the Canberra Raiders, the Panthers will also run a special meet and greet with fans plus conduct coaching clinics with Bathurst juniors.

» Still on Bathurst and like myself, many

Panthers fans will be making the two or so hour journey out west this Saturday to watch the boys take on the Raiders. If you plan on making a weekend out of your trip out west, I thought I’d compile a few suggestions of things to do once the footy is run and won. Why not take a spin on the famous Mount Panorama race circuit or grab a bite to eat in one of Bathurst’s quaint cafes? When I was last in Bathurst, I enjoyed a trip to the old gold mining town of Sofala, about 45 minutes north of downtown Bathurst. Whilst there I hired a gold pan and attempted, albeit unsuccessfully, to find some gold. If none of that interests you, you’re best to pop into one of Bathurst’s historic pubs for a feed and a cool one.

» It’ll be interesting to see how Panthers

prop Sam McKendry responds to last week’s one game suspension for touching a referee when he returns to the field this weekend in Bathurst. I’m told McKendry, one of the nicest guys in league, was fuming after he was handed a one match ban for ever so slightly touching referee Jarrod Maxwell during Penrith’s Round 7 win over the Roosters. Of course touching a referee shouldn’t happen in any sport and probably does deserve some sort of penalty, but it’s the inconsistency from the NRL’s Match Review Committee

that’s really got fans of the game upset.

There have been multiple incidents this season that haven’t been picked up, including one involving Jonathan Thurston against the Panthers a few weeks back.

Let’s hope McKendry’s unfortunate ban sets a precedent for the rest of the season and beyond.

» Still on referees, and which whistle-

blower was offered a one-year playing contract during the recent pre-season after a boss of a big NRL club watched him train the house down? We’re not exactly sure if he was offered the contract in jest but lets just say the referee was very flattered.

» My friends over at Panthers on the

Prowl have been doing great things in the community for more than a decade, and they are about to embark on an exciting new adventure. Next month the Prowl will launch a pilot program called Building Young Men, a 16 week extensive teenage boys mentoring course revolving around rite of passage. It will be conducted in collaboration with Australian practitioner Dr Arne Rubenstein. 35 men from around the local area and beyond have volunteered to be mentors to the teens including a number of Panthers players.

» Has Phil Gould kept the mystery of the

whereabouts of the old Panthers scoreboard alive with a rather cryptic tweet last week on Twitter? A fan asked the ‘Gusfather’ what was happening with the famous old scoreboard, to which Gus replied: “Need someone to know how to put it together”. Since it was torn down a few years ago, many fans thought that the old scoreboard was rusting away in

mou has reportedly turned down a huge offer from the Panthers to remain a Cowboy. Rumours had been doing the rounds for a number of weeks that the Panthers were very interested in the Origin forward who would’ve added some experience to the young pack, but it appears Tamou will remain up north for the remainder of his career.

» No Panthers players have been selected in Mal Meninga’s Kangaroos team to

take on the Kiwis next Friday night at Hunter Stadium. “This is a well-balanced squad and I’m extremely happy with it,” Meninga said. Not counting Trent Merrin, Penrith haven’t had an Australian representative since winger Josh Mansour back in 2014.

» It was a bit disappointing to hear this

week that many Panthers fans who made the long trek to Shark Park left unhappy, not just because Penrith lost by two points yet again, but because of the way they were treated by Sharks supporters.

One Panther fan told me he and his wife were told by a female Sharks fan to go back to the western suburbs and that they he didn’t belong in the Shire. Rough!

enrith Panthers forward James Fisher-Harris may be a quiet character off the field but he’s turning into an absolute beast on it.

Since making his NRL debut in Round 1, the 20-year-old is getting more and more confident with each and every game – he’s earning more minutes, more trust and even bagging himself a couple of tries.

Speaking with Extra Time, Fisher-Harris said he’s starting to adjust to NRL football as the weeks roll on.

“After my first game, I didn’t know if I was playing each week… but now I’m more prepared for each game and getting more confident,” he said.

The young Kiwi product said even coach Anthony Griffin was pleased with how he’s developing.

“Hook is relieved to see me getting more confident and doing better each week, especially last week, that was the most minutes I’ve played in the NRL,” he said.

Fisher-Harris rewarded his coach’s faith last Sunday afternoon with an incredible two try effort in Penrith’s narrow loss to the Sharks.

“It was just luck I reckon, right place at the right time and the gaps just opened up,” Fisher-Harris said of his double.

“It is all still a blur to be honest, I’m still buzzing over it.”

Fisher-Harris’ two try effort also had his iPhone buzzing, with countless texts and social media notifications from friends excited by his performance.

“I’m just focusing on the Panthers this weekend but definitely the Junior Kiwis will be on my mind after that,” he said.

fter a season from hell, Panthers winger Josh Mansour hopes this is the year that his dream of playing State of Origin comes true.

Following a breakout 2014, which culminated in Australian representative honours, Mansour was put on ice for most of last season after two major surgeries resulted in just 12 appearances for the Panthers.

Speaking with Extra Time, the 25-yearold said he’s finally in a good place after a rather tough period.

“Last year was a bit of a rollercoaster for me, I didn’t have a pre-season coming off two surgeries, which was pretty mentally and physically tough,” Mansour said.

“Now, I’m happy with where I am and the form I’m in, and I just want to keep it up and enjoy some more wins.”

Mansour’s happiness has seen him in career-best form throughout the opening eight rounds of the season. He admits his game has gone to a new level under new coach Anthony Griffin.

“Hook’s certainly got a different style to Ivan (Cleary),” Mansour said.

“I’ve learnt to be more accountable for my actions, I think the older I get the more mature I am too.”

Mansour’s year will no doubt get even better if he’s selected to play Origin football in less than a month’s time.

While he’s yet to hear from Blues coach Laurie Daley about a potential spot on the wing, the ‘metre-eater’ remains hopeful his dream will finally become a reality.

Last time Mansour was off-contract, in 2014, a circus surrounded his re-signing with a number of clubs keen on his signa-

ture. This time, however, things have played out behind the scenes, with a new Panthers deal hopefully not too far away.

“I’ve definitely proven myself to this club. I’ve shown my loyalty, I love this place and I’ll be forever grateful to them for giving me my NRL debut,” he said.

“I want to get a deal done as soon as possible but that’s my manager’s job.”

PENRITH NEED TO WIN The Penrith Panthers are playing some fantastic rugby league at the moment but unfortunately – and it has to be said once again – they need to start converting their form and effort into competition points.

Although the Panthers are only a couple of points outside the top eight, rugby league is such a confidence game – I only hope for Penrith that the amount of close losses they have had already this season does not start to mess with their minds.

This Saturday the Panthers travel to Bathurst where they take on the Raiders who will be beaming with confidence after their fantastic win over the Wests Tigers.

Last time these two sides met was in Round 1 and it was a victory to the Raiders, so Penrith will be hoping to reverse the tables and kick start a run of consecutive wins off the back of it.

This game should be a cracker and the feature will be the battle of the forward packs.

Canberra absolutely dominated the Tigers in this area last week and it will be up to the likes of Trent Merrin, Sam McKendry and Reagan Campbell-Gillard to match their middle, and let the brilliance of Bryce Cartwright and the inform Isaah Yeo to create opportunities on the edges.

The Panthers welcome back James Segeyaro and Dean Whare and just at the right time after Waqa Blake and Te Maire Martin sustained injuries in the game against the Cronulla Sharks.

It will be interesting to see how the Panthers go with Peter Wallace returning to the halves after he has been playing so well in the hooking roll.

I am predicting a Panthers win by 8 points.

The ninth-placed Panthers will have a huge task ahead of them, however, when they take on the competitionleading Mounties at 12.40pm.

Canberra’s feeder side have only lost one game all season, that was to the Wyong Roos back in Round 2.

Penrith coach Steve Georgallis has named a strong line-up but all players will need to be at their very best to beat a Mounties side featuring a number of NRL stars including Fijian flyer Sisqa Waqa.

have won seven games in a row following a 24-14 dogfight win over the Cronulla Sharks last weekend.

Cronulla led by four points with 15 minutes to go before the Panthers rallied back to claim yet another victory away from home.

The only lowlight for Penrith was an injury to hooker Wayde Egan who hurt his arm just before half-time.

Try scorers for the Panthers included Ratu Tuisese (2), Dylan Edwards (2) and Braidon Burns. Nathan Cleary kicked two from four.

» Ron Massey Cup: Following a week’s

rest, the St Marys Ron Massey Cup team returned to the field last weekend only to go down to the competition-leading Wentworthville Magpies 26-22.

The opening 10 minutes were physical, clinical and error-free as both sides traded sets with aggression.

St Marys led 12-10 at half-time before a poor start to the second half resulted in two Magpies tries after just four minutes.

St Marys managed to get back into the game with some classy set pieces but the strong defence and error-free football from Wentworthville was enough to hold out the desperate Saints.

The fifth-placed St Marys will return home to St Marys Stadium to take on the third-placed Western Suburbs Magpies this Saturday evening at 6pm.

Ball finals took place last weekend with Penrith smashing the Cronulla Sharks 32-6.

Screaming back into town

here’s not many Aussie bands that are as dedicated to rock as The Screaming Jets.

With 27 years, eight albums, and countless tours under their belt, the band are set to blow the roof off Australian venues once more as they head out on the road in support of their new album ‘Chrome’.

While other acts may be happy to focus solely on their back catalogue, for Paul Woseen – bassist, songwriter and found-

ing member – there’s really no other option but to keep writing new music.

“We’ve never been a band who, for want of a cliche, rest on our laurels,” he said.

“We’re a great live band, and to be a great live band you have to have current material, otherwise you become a cabaret act I think.

“That’s fine if you’re doing Las Vegas, because you’re getting paid a million bucks a show, but we’re not in Vegas,” he laughed.

The album is a culmination of tracks that span 20 years of songwriting. There’s the song that the band tried several times over the years but never quite managed to get right, to the track that was still being

written as recording came to an end.

“The lyrics for the first single I wrote the night before the last day of vocals,” Paul said.

“I had one day left with Dave in the studio before he had to go do some Angels gigs and so I had to write these lyrics.

“I think Scotty (guitarist) found me asleep with my head on a table, on a book with my pencil still in hand,” he laughed.

While Paul was responsible for writing most of the new tracks, it was a team effort to refine and polish the songs ready to take it to the fans.

“Once we all picked the songs we were going to do and we started working on them they no longer became my songs,

they became the band’s songs,” Paul said.

“I’m just stoked that they liked some,” he laughed.

The Jets had the chance to test out a few of the new tracks during last year’s ‘Rock n Roll Rampage’ tour, with great results.

“It’s always good when you look down at the crowd and you know that this bunch of people have never heard this song before but, by halfway through, they’re trying to sing along to the words,” Paul said.

Next month the skills of some of those musicians will be on display when the Australian Chamber Orchestra Ensemble and Penrith Strings perform at The Joan for a Sunday afternoon concert you won’t want to miss.

Fargo’ has been one of the stand out series of the last few years, and now fans can grab a copy of season two which has just been released on DVD and BluRay. This Emmy Award winning black comedy crime drama is set in Fargo, North Dakota, and is inspired by the Coen brothers 1996 film of the same name.

Set in the late 70s beautician Peggy (Kirsten Dunst) and her husband Ed (Jesse Plemons) are trying to cover up their hit-and-run and murder of Rye Gerhardt, while State Trooper Lou Solverson and Sheriff Hank Larsson are investigating a triple homicide connected to Rye. ‘Fargo’ has received an overwhelmingly positive critical reception, achieving a near perfect score on review site Rotten Tomatoes. The series has been praised for its fascinating characters, dark humour and its hints of absurdity.

The star studded cast of season two includes Kirsten Dunst, Patrick Wilson, Ted Danson, Brad Garrett, Kieran Culkin and Nick Offerman.

Episode one begins a tumultuous season as we return to Spencer (Troian Bellisario), Hanna (Ashley Benson), Aria (Lucy Hale), Emily (Shay Mitchell) and Mona (Janel Parrish) all still trapped in A’s dollhouse where they have been, and still are, repeatedly tortured for several weeks.

The episode ends with one big question around A’s identity and leads the audience into the remainder of season six A. The season follows each liar as they recover and deal with what they went through in the dollhouse while trying to find out who was responsible for

their misery.

While ‘A’ is finally revealed in the tell-all season finale (episode 10), it’s not someone people would have guessed, or is it?

Even though it seems like all is said and done, a five-year time jump into season six B, and into a new direction for the show, provides huge answers to some of the series’ burning questions.

The liars relish in their new-found freedom which doesn’t last long as they end up right back where they started when a mysterious murder occurs.

While each episode appears to be dragging the series out, the finale of season six B (episode 20) is one worth waiting for.

A twin is revealed, a plan is hatched to try and catch the new ‘A’ (now known as ‘Uber A’), and audiences will be left shocked as it remains unknown if one liar is alive or dead.

Ê We finally have an airdate for the latest series of ‘The Voice’, with the hit show set to premiere on Channel Nine this Sunday, May 1. It will then continue on Monday, May 2 and Tuesday, May 3.

Ronan Keating joins the judging panel this season along with regulars Delta Goodrem, Jessie J and the Madden brothers. Sonia Kruger will fly solo as host.

Ê Also returning for another season this Sunday night is ‘MasterChef Australia’ on Channel Ten. Season eight of the hit cooking series will premiere at 7.30pm and continue on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Matt Preston, George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan will return as judges with some surprise special guest chefs along the way. Ê It was sad to learn of the death of famous TV mum Doris Roberts last week at the age of 90. The former ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ star died in her sleep from natural causes. Roberts won countless Emmy Awards over the years but I’ll remember her best as Danny Tanner’s (Bob Saget) mother in an episode of ‘Full House’ titled ‘Granny Tanny’.

Who knows whether she would’ve ever appeared in the new ‘Fuller House’ series but, boy, I would have loved to have seen that. Ê It appears Logies producers are steering away from international acts this year with Aussie pop stars Delta Goodrem and Conrad Sewell the latest singers announced to perform at next month’s event. The pair will join Samantha Jade and Jimmy Barnes as four local acts set to entertain the crowd at Melbourne’s Crown Casino on May 8.

Ê Some big Aussie names have joined Channel Ten’s upcoming drama ‘The Wrong Girl’. Starring Jessica Marais, ‘The Wrong Girl’ will also star Craig McLachlan, Hamish Blake, Kerry Armstrong and Madeleine West. Based on the bestselling book by Zoe Foster Blake, Marais plays Lily, the producer of a cooking segment on a morning TV show, who finds herself torn between two men played by Ian Meadows and Rob Collins.

Simson (RedBalloon) and newcomer Dr Glen Richards (Greencross Australia) will receive business pitches from the fantastic to the forgettable. ‘Shark Tank’ returns Sunday, May 8 at 9pm.

Jewellery workshop Saturday, May 4

The Creative Fringe will be holding a bead and jewellery workshop next week.

Starting at 6.30pm, locals will have the opportunity to learn how to make polymer clay beads that are used to create necklaces, earrings, brooches, sculptures.

OZWAC Charity Ball is back for another year Saturday, May 21 at St Marys Band Club

The Australian Women and Children’s research foundation OZWAC will hold their 17th annual charity ball next month.

The foundation is based in Penrith and was established to provide medical research into the health of women and children.

Since its inception, the foundation has supported research primarily at Nepean and Westmead Hospitals.

Chairperson of the foundation, Simon Gould, said he loves being a part of a team that aims to make a difference.

“We’re helping research that can make a real difference in people’s lives for the long term,” he said.

“It’s exciting to be a part of and, if people come to the charity ball, they will definitely be supporting a really good cause and will help provide critical funding for research in the local area.”

The ball will be held at St Marys Band Club on Saturday, May 21, from 7pm.

Feeding fat trimmings (such as from chicken or steak) can also be dangerous and lead to a condition called pancreatitis.

It is best to stick to pets foods and a mixture of cooked lean meats and vegetables.

Xylitol is a sugar substitute used as a sweetener in products such as chewing gum, some toothpastes and food products.

While it is safe for humans, it is metabolised differently in dogs and other pets, and can lead to low blood sugar resulting in tremors, seizures and even death.

It is estimated that xylitol is 100 times more toxic to dogs than chocolate!

We also often see sick dogs after eating various types of fertilisers and blood and bone products.

In general, fertilisers tend to cause mild to moderate gastrointestinal irritation and can result in excessive drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and lethargy.

Some fertiliser types such as blood and bone meal have large amounts of bacterial and fungal ingredients and can cause severe gastrointestinal upsets – these animals often need treatment in hospital.

If your pet eats a fertiliser, it is important to seek veterinary attention immediately as there is a vast variety of different products with different toxicity levels.

estern Sydney Wanderers hat-trick hero Romeo Castelen said he’s buzzing at the chance to play in his first ALeague Grand Final.

The 32-year-old Dutchman almost single-handedly got his side back into the match last Sunday evening after Brisbane ran rampant with three early goals.

After trailing 3-0 after 23 minutes, Castelen got the Wanderers on the board in the 26th minute before scoring again in the 53rd and 59th minute to put the home side ahead.

Speaking on Tuesday, Castelen said it wasn’t the first time he’s scored a hat-trick in a game but it was certainly the most memorable one of his decorated career.

“I’ve scored hat-tricks with the Holland U21’s team and for other clubs like Hamburger but never on a stage like this… it was massive and very important for everyone involved,” he said.

Even before last weekend’s incredible heroics, Castelen had already been enjoying his best season with the Wanderers to date scoring seven goals – five more than he made all of last season.

Castelen said he’s looking forward to putting in another excellent performance in the biggest game of the season.

“You play football to play in finals, it’s not something you do every week or every year,” he said.

“We’ll be prepared to work and give Adelaide the respect they deserve, but we’ll be ready.”

It won’t be an easy task for Castelen and his men, with their opponents Adelaide United only losing one of their past 20 A-League games.

The Wanderers will need to be at their absolute best to defeat this year’s Premier’s Plate winners and claim their first A-League Championship.

“If you look at our team we were stable across the whole season too, we were at the top of the table for a long time and played some great football,” Castelen said.

“This Sunday will be no different. It’s a final but our preparation will be the same.”

oronia Park has undergone more than $100,000 worth of upgrades for the reconstruction and irrigation work to three of its fields.

Grant funding through the NSW Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Community Building Partnerships Program along with funding from Penrith Council and contributions from St Marys Rugby League Club has delivered a playing surface that is now more resilient to wear and tear.

Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown, said the reconstructed fields, located in North St Marys, will accommodate a greater number of people. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Council supports the growth of sport and recreation in Penrith,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Boronia Park is used by approximately 700 players representing 47 teams for 48 weeks of the year. The upgrades will allow these and new participants more opportunities to train and participate with the playing surface better able to withstand the wear and tear.â&#x20AC;?

Penrith Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sports Ground Management Strategy identified the importance for improved turf quality at Boronia Park.

Originally the fields were built over a road and sections of the road were appearing through the surface, making the ground unsafe and players vulnerable to injury.

It also identified that there was an acute shortage of fields available for coaching programs, training and games within the community.

Nepean FC gives back NATHAN TAYLOR

ponsoring sporting clubs is always a great way to be involved in the local community, but one poultry and egg farming business is donating their jersey sponsorship space to charity.

Llandilo business Alquail Pty Ltd recently got behind local soccer club Nepean FC through sponsoring jerseys worn by the club’s U18’s men’s State League team.

However instead of using the jersey to promote their business, they offered up the space to a deserving local charity instead.

“One of our sponsors, Alquail Pty Ltd, came on board this season to sponsor our men’s U18’s State League team,” Nepean FC President Ryan Trussell explained.

“Instead of using the Alquail business logo on the front of the jerseys, they’ve donated the space to local charity International Football Exchange (IFE).”

IFE is a not-for-profit charity organisation founded in 2015 by Nepean FC junior Nathan Ralph.

One of the main aspects of the charity is collecting unwanted football gear, new or used, and donating it to disadvantaged children around the world.

Recently, Nepean FC cleaned out their own unwanted gear and donated it to IFE. “We recently saw photos of kids in Thailand wearing Nepean FC gear, which was really special,” Trussell said.

Players wore the special jerseys for the first time last Saturday at Cook Park in St Marys.

Trussell believes the donating of jersey sponsorship space to charity could be a first for representative football clubs in the state.

“I’m not aware of another club within Football NSW who has done that,” he said.

Trussell said 50 per cent of funds acquired from the Alquail sponsorship will also be donated to IFE.
