enrith and Blacktown Councillors are crying out for a new bridge to stop the injury and death toll at South Creek.

The creek crossing on Stony Creek Road, Shanes Park has been the scene of many accidents, including a tragic fatality in 2011.

Now, Councillors from across the geographical and political divide want action.

“This road is a major thoroughfare for Penrith, Blacktown and Hawkesbury Council residents.

But we have an 1814 crossing on a 2014 road,” Penrith Councillor Maurice Girotto said.

“It frustrates me that a person has died here and yet the State Government has its priorities all wrong, funding extravagant infrastructure like the Nepean River Green Bridge.”

Blacktown Councillor Charlie Lowles agrees.

“In this area, if someone turns their sprinklers on the road is flooded. Travelling through here at night is also incredibly dangerous,” he said.

Penrith’s Cr John Thain called for joint action from all three levels of government.

Transport for NSW says there were 10 crashes at the creek between July 2008 and June 2013; seven occurred when the weather was fine and speeding was never a factor.

“The NSW Government provided $500,000 in 2012 through the Safer Roads Program to Blacktown Council to install barriers, remove hazards, widen large drains, improve floodgates and install automatic electronic signs,” an RMS spokesperson said.

Cr Girotto said that the “electronic trinkets” were simply not enough.

Shorten on uni fee warpath Opposition Leader says Government must reconsider education changes CASSANDRA O’CONNOR

ederal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says that higher fees, less placements and higher debt could all be a reality for local students if the Federal Government’s higher education policy is implemented.

In the May Budget the Federal Government flagged its policy to give universities the freedom to set their own course fees, reduce government course subsidies by 20 per cent and increase the interest rate charged on student loans.

Speaking exclusively to the Western Weekender on the possibility that fee deregulation could result in fewer university placements, Mr Shorten said it’s a real possibility.

“UWS has already had to make a hard decision to freeze fees for this year, which is a good decision, but it means that because UWS have shown leadership to western Sydney [they] are going to be feeling the financial pain right now. It’s a very real prospect,” he said.

“We’ve estimated that UWS will be losing $195 million over the next four years. Now they have an annual turnover of about $700 million. If you take that proportion of money out, something’s got to give. The

Liberal Budget for high education is what burning books is to literacy, it’s completely wrong.”

Mr Shorten said students and staff have expressed concerns about student loan interest rates being pegged at government bond levels, currently around six per cent.

“Experience in the US shows that for prospective graduates they weigh up if it’s worth going to university, and the university is concerned about it. That’s not us dreaming up lines to scare people, the problem is the Liberal Budget. Western suburbs Liberal MPs by voting to support these cuts are voting against their own voters’ interests,” he said.

On Tuesday morning, Mr Shorten toured the UWS Kingswood campus with Deputy Opposition Leader Tanya Plibersek and university staff. He then addressed a crowd of about 50 students and urged them to add their voices to the debate.

“30 to 40 years ago there was an argument that it should not be about how much money your parents have, it shouldn’t be your credit card limit that determines your education,” he said.

Lindsay MP Fiona Scott vehemently denies that the Government’s higher education policy will disadvantage locals.

I finished school around the time that bullying started to become something we talked about, and something we wanted to stamp out.

Fast forward a little and whether it be bullying in the schoolyard, workplace or just in general, it’s something we’re not afraid to discuss and tackle head-on.

The best thing you can do when you witness bullying is to call the offender out, which is why I want to wave my finger at both The Daily Telegraph and New Idea over stories published this week that I honestly believe fall into the bullying category.

Bullying is not always about picking on the fat boy, the kid with red hair or the person with the funny looking lunch. In fact, quite often it breaches the traditional stereotypes.

On Saturday, the Telegraph published an article, written by Charlotte Willis, under the headline of “Rebecca Judd shocks with ‘skeletal’ frame in bikini selfie”.

Now celebrity stories aren’t usually on my radar, particularly ones that involve social media and ‘selfies’. If I was interested, I’d follow them myself – I don’t need my daily newspaper leaning on the lazy side of journalism and doing it for me.

But this one caught my eye because I thought it was incredibly unfair to publish.

The story involved a photograph posted by Rebecca Judd in a bikini on her Instagram account. The story claimed that Rebecca had “sparked concern” over her “worryingly thin frame”.

“Her hips are clearly visible in the full length shot and her legs are incredibly slender,” the story said.

Now it’d be easy to just bypass the story, consider it tabloid trash and move on, but something about this really bothered me, particularly given it appeared in a publication that has often cheered the anti-bullying cause.

Here was a story, based entirely off a social media post, with clearly no attempt to contact Rebecca Judd herself for comment.

No health expert was contacted, and there was no information at the end of the article for anyone who may be struggling with whatever it is the Telegraph wants to infer Ms Judd is struggling with. Of course, a few random people on social media who commented on the original photo were quoted – reliable sources indeed.

Personally, the photos don’t look all that concerning to me. I have plenty of people in my friendship and working circle who would probably look the same if they took a similar photo.

I reckon it’s very, very poor form for the Telegraph to be waving the “you’re too thin” stick at somebody, and I certainly think it’s exceptionally irresponsible to encourage reader comments on the topic.

A couple of days later, out comes the latest edition of New Idea.

Across its front page is a picture of Channel Nine personality Sonia Kruger, with the headline “What’s happened to her face”.

What happened, you ask? A bit of sunburn.

But that was apparently enough to convince the magazine to pay $50,000 for the photos.

I get it, these type of magazines do this stuff all the time and we just fob it off. But should we really accept a magazine paying big money to embarrass someone?

What message does it send when we publicly say that having a bit of sunburn on your face is front page news?

The media organisations I’ve spoken about today are big, powerful players. They’d also most likely have anti-bullying policies for their staff.

The stories on Rebecca Judd and Sonia Kruger amount to bullying. We really shouldn’t put up with it, but I have little doubt that we will.

Sad, really.

rogue dog who bit off a man’s finger and attempted to attack police in the front yard of a St Clair home last weekend has been euthanised.

The brown, male staffordshire terrier had attacked its owners’ neighbour at about 5.45pm on Saturday, August 9,

when he entered the front yard of the Bode Place address. During the attack, the man’s finger was bitten off by the dog at the second knuckle.

Police from St Marys Local Area Command attended the scene shortly after and were also set upon by the animal, which they tried to subdue with OC spray.

The dog ran away from the scene but was captured by Council rangers in a

nearby street not long after the incident.

The severed finger was recovered and the man was transported to Westmead Hospital for treatment. “Police are still investigating the incident and the man remains in hospital for treatment to his hand,� said St Marys Local Area Command Crime Manager, Barry Vincent.

The dog was surrendered by its owners and euthanised on Monday.

Teenager hurt in crash

Frightening new figures show that people are risking their lives and the lives of others by driving while affected by drugs.

NSW Roads Minister, Duncan Gay revealed this week that a disturbing 11 per cent of road fatalities in NSW involved a driver or motorcyclist who had illicit drugs in their system.

“We know that in the last four years, at least 166 people died on our roads in crashes involving motorists with at least one of three illicit drugs, cannabis, speed or ecstasy in their system,” Mr Gay said.

“We will be stepping up the fight to remove this behaviour from our roads and help save the lives of innocent motorists endangered by the idiotic actions of drug drivers.”

man hit by a car while riding his motorised bicycle in Londonderry last weekend suffered serious injuries that may not have been so severe had he been wearing appropriate protective equipment.

Arrests over assault and kidnapping at Castlereagh

12-year-old charged over armed robbery at St Marys

Six members of the Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang, including high-ranking members of the Penrith chapter, have been arrested and charged over a kidnapping and assault from earlier this year. Police have been investigating the circumstances surrounding an incident in May where a 45-year-old man was allegedly abducted and assaulted by a group of men. He was attacked outside a Castlereagh property on Thursday, May 8, before being taken inside, tied up and repeatedly assaulted.

Police established that a number of items were stolen during the assault. Gangs Squad detectives last week arrested and charged six men, including a 24-year-old from Werrington, a 30-year-old from Emu Plains and a 32-year-old also from Emu Plains.

St Marys police officers have arrested a 12-year-old boy for his involvement in an alleged armed robbery in the area.

At around 4pm on Sunday, August 10, a 15-year-old boy was participating in activities at a youth centre in St Marys, when he was chased from the building by two males.

One of the males was allegedly armed with a knife. Police allege that the 15-year-old was then tackled to the ground by one of the males before he was threatened by the other who was holding a knife. The 15-yearold’s mobile phone was stolen before the alleged offenders ran from the scene. Local police have since arrested a 12-year-old boy at a shopping centre in Mount Druitt. He was taken to Mount Druitt Police Station and charged with related offences.

Last weekend, local police issued public appeals for information after a boy was seen being forced into a vehicle in South Penrith. Concerns were held by police when a member of the public reported seeing the incident at about 2.20pm on Saturday, August 9. Following a search of the area, police were able to locate the child and his family and clarify the situation. “After work on a police investigation, we found that the circumstances weren’t as first feared.

We would like to thank the community for their vigilance in reporting this incident and encourage them to continue to do so,” said Penrith Crime Manager Grant Healey.

An off-duty police officer has been charged with assault following an incident that occurred early last week. At about 10.45am on Tuesday, August 5, the senior constable allegedly assaulted a woman at her Penrith workplace. As a result of the incident, the woman had to be treated for bruising and soft-tissue damage. The police officer, who is attached to a specialist command, was arrested at Penrith Police Station on Thursday, August 7. He was charged with two assault related charges.

The court granted him conditional bail. He appeared in court again on Tuesday, August 12.

The heritage assistance fund has been set up to ďŹ nancially assist owners, lessees and not-for-proďŹ t organisations of heritage items and conservation areas such as buildings, houses and archaeological sites.

The fund also offers grants for conservation work to properties listed in the Penrith Local Environmental Plan 1991, Penrith City Centre Local Environmental Plan 2008 and Penrith Local Environmental Plan 2010 as heritage items or within heritage conservation areas.

Funding offered is on a $1 for $1 basis where Council contributes half of the cost of the restoration works. Works can range from $1,000 to $2,000 to a maximum of $5,000 of works. Funding will be issued upon completion of all approved works.

Should you wish to make an application for funding please ensure it is received at Council no later than Friday, 31 October 2014.

A successful application will demonstrate that the proposed works are essential to maintaining the signiďŹ cance of an item, that is, the work is appropriate from a heritage perspective.

n elderly pedestrian hit by a car in Penrith last weekend has died in hospital as a result of his injuries.

Emergency services were called to the Great Western Highway, near Castlereagh Road, at about 7pm on Sunday night after reports that a man had been hit by a car.

Officers from Penrith Local Area Command attended the scene, where they found a man lying on the road.

Police say that the man had been

crossing the road and was not using a pedestrian walkway.

The man, believed to be in his eighties, was taken by ambulance paramedics to Nepean Hospital in a critical condition and he died not long after.

The female driver of the vehicle was not injured in the incident. “A crime scene was established and police have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision,� a Police spokesperson said. “A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.�

Anyone who witnessed the accident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

The alleged offender was refused bail and appeared in Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday, August 10.

urrambee School’s long awaited upgrades were officially opened this week, marking the completion of $13 million worth of new buildings, outdoor learning areas and a hydrotherapy pool.

NSW Education Minister, Adrian Piccoli was joined by Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott and State Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies on Monday, August 11, to officially open the new school facility, which has been in use since Term 1 this year.

“With these facilities, these fantastic children and the children that come after them will have an even more wonderful experience at school,” Mr Piccoli said.

Mrs Davies said it was just last year when Mr Piccoli and herself toured the school whilst it was under construction.

“To come back here today, to see it finalised, to see it freshly painted and full of budding young students and their fantastic support teachers and staff is a true, true joy,” Mrs Davies said.

The school has been relocated to the new facility, which includes 17 brand new classrooms, a hydrotherapy pool, a facility for special programs, an undercover outdoor

14 Future a little clearer for tennis courts

enrith Councillors have called for further clarification on the future of St Marys Tennis Courts after a number of expressions of interest in the site have been made.

St Marys tennis courts are part of a precinct providing sports and recreation opportunities at South Creek Park, including athletics, BMX, aquatics, as well as rugby league and touch football.

With neighbouring Blair Oval named Council’s preferred location for an allweather athletics track, Council is now considering a variety of options for the tennis courts in the short and long term.

“We have had three expressions of interest in the last six months for the site,” explained a Council staffer.

“We have had a proposal for a cover to be built over the courts... all the proposals are very strong.”

A report on Monday evening said that in relation to management in the short term, “the options appear to be continued management by Council, management by the Nepean District Tennis Association, or entering into an arrangement with Penrith Aquatic and Leisure Ltd (managing Ripples)”.

“Dependent on finalisation of the future

master plan for South Creek, longer term opportunities appear to be creating a Community Tennis Hub being piloted by Tennis Australia or, seeking expressions of interest for the long term development and management of the site by a commercial entity.”

Currently, Penrith City Tennis Club books St Marys tennis courts every Saturday for three hours and there is an estimated 60-70 participants each week.

As far as other use is concerned, courts are booked on average for a total of 20 to 25 hours per week, with utilisation by approximately 100-130 participants.

Cr Prue Car said that some minor improvements to the local facilities have been made.

“It should be noted that since this issue was first raised earlier this year that Council has made some improvements to the kitchen and the courts’ surface,” she said.

“I would like to know what would be involved in making the centre a community tennis hub with Tennis Australia.”

Cr Bernard Bratusa agreed and said it was important that a clear direction was planned.

“We need to get some direction with where we are going with this complex.

With only $15,000 made in income from the site, a large investment now doesn’t seem to make sense,” he said.

Penrith Progression held its Ideas and Opportunities Workshop last week as it continues to map out the future of the Penrith city centre. The workshop heard from leading Future’s Architect Mike McAllum and professor of urban policy Dr Ed Blakely.

Mike McAllum expressed his thoughts on being part of a new economy. The world that we currently conduct our business in is a very different world to how we will conduct our business in the future – we need to keep that in mind as we plan for Penrith’s future.

Professor Blakely spoke of the need to create magnet infrastructure to grow cities, which is exactly what Council is embarking on with the Sydney Science Park and University of Western Sydney’s Werrington Park Corporate Centre and Werrington

Campus. These hubs will offer world class facilities and are positioned to be leaders in their respective industries.

They are attracting business investment, which in turn leads to employment opportunities further stimulating the local economy.

We need to create opportunities ourselves instead of relying on others to do it for us. Council has long been an advocate for further investment in infrastructure and business, now through Penrith Progression we are realising the untapped potential of our area.

Child approached at Colyton Police are investigating after a sevenyear-old boy was approached by a man at Colyton on Tuesday morning and asked for his name and home address.

The boy ran to a nearby school and police were called. Police want to speak to a man aged in his 30s with a dark complexion last seen wearing a navy blue cap.

ore than 300,000 Australian teenagers will give up one of their creature comforts this weekend, whether it be food, furniture or technology, for World Vision’s 40 Hour Famine.

In a bid to raise funds and awareness for children living in poverty throughout the world, a number of local schools and teenagers will be taking part in the annual event.

Larissa Canning, 18, is an Emu Plains resident who is giving up the privilege of sleeping in her own bed, sitting down at the dinner table or relaxing on the lounge for the weekend to remind herself and others that there are people out there doing it tough.

“I am studying social work at Uni and I am learning a lot about underprivileged people. It has made me realise how unappreciative we are of everything we have,” she said.

“We take getting home and getting into bed for granted. I practically live in my bed so it is going to be hard. Sleeping in a bed can mean a lot to someone who doesn’t have one.”

Ms Canning is hoping to raise $500 for World Vision by giving up furniture and has almost met her target.

“After nearly 40 years, it’s heartening to see young people still motivated to tackle poverty and hunger head on by participating in the 40 Hour Famine,” World Vision Australia’s Chief Executive, Tim Costello said.

Funds raised this year will go towards food security projects in Rwanda, Ethiopia, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, East Timor and Nepal.

howing age is no limit to maturity, 13 primary school students conducted a Junior Council meeting on Monday evening.

Junior Mayor Alannah Hader, adorned in the traditional Mayoral robes, guided the 12 councillors through a debate on two very serious topics; whether Penrith should have a theme park, and whether smaller parks should be closed to fund the management and creation of larger parks.

Abbey Watson was the first to speak and argued that a theme park would create local jobs.

“The theme park fits in with the White Water Stadium, Penrith Lakes and Regatta Centre. It would bring jobs to the local community... it would be a place where kids and teenagers could enjoy themselves,” she said.

Chloe Langius disagreed: “The theme park would waste a lot of money. Such a large amount of money could be spent on something important like extra parks”.

When it came to voting, the vast majority of junior councillors agreed that a theme park should be built.

Opening up better river views Council’s plan to make residents feel better connected with famous waterway

esidents with frontage along the Nepean River could be given even better views of Penrith’s icon if Council plans to clear some of the banks’ vegetation are given the green light.

Council has developed a new Vegetation Management Plan encompassing Weir Reserve, Tench Reserve and Regatta Park East, as well as the banks of the river.

One of the top priorities of the plan will be to selectively prune up to 30 per cent of canopy cover in dense areas to provide filtered views for residential areas.

Foreign trees will also slowly be removed and replaced with native, clear-trunked trees that provide better viewing.

Cr Mark Davies said the plans could go even further but that he will see what feedback is provided in the pubic consultation period.

“It’s great to see that the Our River Masterplan has instigated the development of this plan,” he said.

“One area that I am not really comfortable with is creating the views of the river.

I don’t think the plan goes far enough.

“When we went through the Our River Masterplan process people said they wanted to feel connected to the river. I believe that people only feel connected as much as they can physically see the river.”

Any clearing will need State Government approval as the riparian vegetation is an environmental asset.

Cr Kevin Crameri said that Council will need to be cautious when handling the sensitive habitats along the Nepean River.

“We should be looking at what is growing along the River at the gorge as that bush

“Also, we need to look at clearing the casuarinas, particularly after the weir because in the event of a flood, they will be wiped out and could cause blockages further down, which will cause problems for us here.”

Penrith Council’s Design and Projects Manager, Michael Jackson, said that a

detailed list of trees, bushes and shrubs to be planted along the river is included in the plan.

He also said that the plan includes an education component.

“There’s a lot of misinformation or myths about vegetation near waterways so there will be an education campaign launched about the river if the plan is adopted,” Mr Jackson said.

Council will also seek a further report on whether there are suitable locations along the west bank of the river for more pedestrian access points.

“There are two access points on the River Road side but they are 1.5km apart.

We need more access points to the lower walkway,” Cr Marcus Cornish said.

The Vegetation Management Plan will go on public exhibition from August 25.

ith the Penrith Progression project reaching the business end of planning, Project Director Craig Butler says that Council will be “open minded” when it comes to developing its land holdings in the Penrith CBD. “We have property for public space and we also have a property development section that is focused on assembling strategic sites,” he explained.

“We would have sites that we would like to think have potential.”

But using those strategic sites for car parking is not a high priority.

“Car parking is not the highest and best use... we stress that we would not be looking to compromise parking in the CBD,” he said.

Instead, the vision is to have high end office space and residential living, a vision that has the endorsement of hundreds of members of the community that have

been consulted over the past 12 months.

Last Friday 80 experts in the business and property development sectors met at Penrith Council to discuss a number of possible projects that could be used to revitalise the CBD. “We are happy with the level of development that is occurring outside the CBD such as Penrith Panthers, Thornton; but we are not happy with the amount of development within the CBD,” Mr Butler said.

“All 80 experts agreed that there are great opportunities to have high density development in the CBD. If people live here they can shop here and work here.”

Some of the more creative ideas being looked at include tapping into Penrith’s existing education resources in the University of Western Sydney and TAFE to create a design and arts hub.

“There may be opportunities in the cultural sector with the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre and the Lewers Bequest to establish a premier cultural facility,” Mr Butler explained.

Giving back to those who saved his life KATHERINE TWEED

or most, running the gruelling City2Surf would be one of the greatest challenges you could confront.

But for James Caspar, it was a breeze compared to what he went through two years ago.

The father of two from Mudgee was flown to Nepean Hospital in October 2012 after suffering a severe ruptured aneurysm and subsequent bleeding of the brain.

He spent six weeks in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he was placed in an induced coma and treated before being moved to another ward and spending over four additional months in recovery there.

Under two years later, Mr Caspar has made a full and amazing recovery that has blown away his former ICU doctors and nurses, who wouldn’t have bet a cent that he’d recover completely, let alone take part in a 14 kilometre run.

Mr Caspar ran the City2Surf last weekend to raise funds for the ICU – his way of giving back to those who saved his life.

“I basically owe my life to them, and my recovery to them. I can’t express my gratitude enough because I wouldn’t be here without them,” he said.

“I wanted to repay them in some way.

If we could raise money for them or raise awareness for them, that was going to be the only thing I could do.

“I thought that I should do something significant and I knew that the City2Surf wasn’t going to be easy, and it certainly wasn’t. We did it in a fairly good time.”

Mr Caspar ran the City2Surf alongside ICU doctor, Sam Orde, completing the run in one hour and 40 minutes.

To thank the ICU staff for their support during Mr Caspar’s treatment, his wife Georgie and daughter Emily also completed the run alongside ICU doctor Nhi Ngugen.

“It was a very traumatic experience [James’ hospitalisation], and it was a scary experience but my memories of being here are very positive,” Mrs Caspar said.

“Once we got here I was just amazed by the culture of the unit and the fact that it felt like the worst thing had happened to James but we were all fighting really hard on the same team, in a way.”

The family has raised over $5,000 for the unit so far, confident that they will meet their $10,000 target.

“James’ story is a reminder to us, as doctors and nurses, of the strength of the human spirit and not to underestimate the potential a person has to recover,” Dr Ngugen said.

Banking conundrum My point is a brief one and concerns Commonwealth Bank’s IT policy and customer service.

My 20-year-old daughter spent a wonderful year in Australia. She worked in farms, got new friends and enjoyed in all respects her stay there. To speed things up, she opened an account in a local Commonwealth Bank and saved her earnings there. She also changed her cell phone number to a local number. After returning home, she naturally changed her

phone number and informed the bank about the change. But, the bank refused to accept her statement. They said that the only way to accept it is by fax, because: “Email communications are an insecure channel. They are sent over the Internet in plain text between mail servers.

This method may not be totally secure”. Fax?? Is there anyone in the world who uses a fax anymore? There are multiple ways to secure much bigger and more important things than a phone number change. Here in Finland, we threw faxes in a scrap heap years ago. Now, in my mind, for a ridiculous reason, a young person is forced to hold her earnings in a foreign bank. In my opinion all this reeks of hypocrisy and is a bank’s way to avoid transferring a client’s property.

Passing on thanks I would like to send out a big thank you to Kathryn McKay, a

wonderful local vet from South Penrith Veterinary Clinic. On Saturday while running near local bushland, I discovered a male Eastern Grey Kangaroo injured yet very much alive suffering on the side of the road and immediately called WIRES. Kathryn McKay answered the call and came to the aid of the Kangaroo. In her opinion this poor animal could have been suffering on the side of the road since late Friday night.

To her credit this committed local vet had already worked a full day caring for our local pets when she came out to Castlereagh to pick up the Kangaroo and then proceeded to find a local clinic where she could take the animal to assess his injuries. I understand these things happen, but I encourage the community to take care when driving close to our local bushland and if you do hit any animal please stop and call either a local vet, WIRES if a native animal or the police. Once again thank you Kathryn for your dedication and assistance, you are an asset to South Penrith Vet and our local community.

Council has welcomed the Department of Planning and Environment’s green light to move to the formal process of public consultation for the Sydney Science Park proposal at Luddenham. The proposal is a 280 hectare master planned centre for research, development and education in the food security, energy and health sectors.

“These are exciting times. We’re on the threshold of a New West, one that has good roads, good jobs and support for the people who choose to live in one of the fastest growing regions in Australia,” said Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler.

“Baiada has committed to develop its own food and research laboratories and headquarters to kick off the Sydney Science Park. This commitment will create an initial 200 jobs on the site by 2016. Ultimately the Park will have the capacity for 12,200 jobs and 10,000 students.”

Cr Fowler said the Science Park would attract the world’s leading scientific professionals and organisations to western Sydney, and alongside the major infrastructure commitments recently announced by the Federal and State governments, would be a catalyst for high quality development in the Broader Western Sydney Employment Area.

“Increasing jobs, particularly high-

end knowledge jobs in the City is a high priority for Council,” Cr Fowler said.

On June 24, 2014, the Minister for Hospitality, Gaming and Racing, Troy Grant MP, announced that Penrith Council had been successful in its application for funding from the ClubGRANTS program, worth $934,901 as a contribution to the upgrades and new facility provision in Jamison Park.

The works include a new multi-sport court, outdoor gym area, table tennis table, seniors fitness equipment and a ball toss facility. Four full sized fields will be reconstructed and new lighting installed. At this stage, it is the intention that the following schedule of work takes place: • Playground to commence in September 2014 with completion in October 2014.

• Sportsground upgrades to commence in late September/ October (at the conclusion of the winter season) and completed in January 2015.

• All age and ability activity zone to commence in October 2014.

• Sports amenity upgrades to commence in December 2014 with completion in June 2015.

• Floodlight upgrades to commence in December 2014.

Local teenagers have the opportunity to hear from international award winning author Randa Abdel-Fattah, who will be addressing issues like bullying, identity, race, politics, prejudice and human rights at a talk in Penrith.

From 6pm on Thursday, August 21, the well-known author will be visiting Penrith City Library for a free talk, aimed at adolescents aged 12 to 16.

Ms Abdel-Fattah has penned eight novels, including well known books Does My Head Look Big In This? and Ten Things I Hate About Me.

ith almost every one of the state’s historical records located at the NSW State Records facility in Kingswood, getting involved in Family History Month is much easier for local residents than other people across New South Wales.

But many local residents may not know that the facility exists, according to State Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies, who visited the treasure trove on Monday.

“We want to highlight August, which is Family History Month, and the fact that there are a lot of people in western Sydney who actually may not know that this resource is at their front door. It is an amazing wealth of information,” Mrs Davies said.

“I think it is important that people have the opportunity to preserve their own family history and to keep it for generations and generations to come.”

Local people are free to visit the site, located on O’Connell Street, Kingswood, or visit the website www.records.nsw. gov.au for information about their own family history.

People may be surprised at just how much history is available at the State Records facility.

“We’ve got over 500 kilometres of records here and then we’ve got over 70 kilometres of what we call archives, state archives. The information we carry here goes back to 1788, when the state was first colonised,” said Geoff Hinchcliffe, Western Sydney Records Centre Director.

“For people of western Sydney, it is a really great place to start their journey in

“We’ve got terrific resources here on site and online, plus we’ve got very dedicated and experienced staff who can help get them started,” Mr Hinchcliffe said.

Locals are encouraged to visit during the month of August.

“I am sure Randa Abdel-Fattah will inspire budding writers and human rights advocates in the Penrith area,” said Penrith City Library Children’s Librarian, Barjinder Kaur.

“HSC students might benefit from her talk as one of her books, Ten Things I Hate About Me is part of HSC English topic area ‘Belonging’. It is going to be a great event and I am really looking forward for it.”

Adolescents who attend the free event will each go into a draw to win one of Ms Abdel-Fattah’s books, however places are limited so booking is essential.

ports clubs looking for a new home are being told to be prepared come September when Penrith Council will be calling for expressions of interest in several new playing fields that will be completed in the next two years.

And if Councillor Bernard Bratusa has his way, one of those playing fields might even have a synthetic surface.

Mugloa Rise and Jordan Springs are two of Penrith’s newest housing estates and construction is set to begin on much needed sporting facilities in these suburbs.

At the corner of Greenwood Parkway and Alinta Promenade, the Village Oval will include either two full size rectangular fields or one oval field with high quality light and an amenities pavilion.

There is also outdoor fitness equipment, a parkour area, sports court area, playground and a learn to cycle area.

Closer to the Northern Road in Jordan Springs, there will be another lit field near

an all abilities playground. Cr Bratusa said there are opportunities to possibly have a synthetic pitch installed at one of the sites.

“Sport is the lifeblood of a local community and to me it is common sense for Council to examine every avenue when providing facilities for the residents,” he said.

“Councils such as Willoughby, Leichhardt, Sutherland, Gosford and Ryde have all embraced the value of synthetic playing fields.

“They are relatively low in maintenance and offer year round usage. There is nothing worse than telling a six-year-old they can’t play footy on the weekend because the field has been closed.

“I’ve asked Council officers to discuss the option of having a synthetic field as part of the Jordan Springs sporting fields package with the Lend Lease.”

Clubs will be asked in the coming weeks to submit an expression of interest in using the new fields.

enrith City Library will be full of pyjama-clad children come Wednesday next week, as the library celebrates Book Week with its annual Pyjama Night Storytime.

Kicking off at 5pm with the building of a Duplo masterpiece and concluding with a story reading like none other from 6.30pm, the event annually attracts children and their parents from across the local area.

“Penrith Library is celebrating Book Week in August. This year’s theme is

‘Connect to Read’,” said Penrith City Library Children’s Librarian, Barjinder Kaur.

“We are encouraging families and children to come to the library on Wednesday, August 20 for reading or listening to stories and songs, connect and catch up with your favourite books and build a friendship.”

There will be songs, puppets and musical instruments as well as the opportunity for children to win lucky door prizes for their involvement in the activities.

Traineeships on offer again Council success stories encourage others to follow in their footsteps

enrith Council is once again searching for high quality candidates to take on traineeships across disciplines such as business administration, childcare and information technology.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said Council’s traineeships combine a year of paid work, accredited training and an internal mentoring program.

“Trainees receive a nationally recognised qualification and most go on to further study or work in local government or the private sector at the end of their year-long traineeships,” Cr Fowler said.

Applications are now open for 50 traineeship positions across Council departments and services including building services, the library and childcare.

“Whether you’re currently completing your HSC, looking to change careers or returning to the workforce, our traineeships are a great opportunity,” Cr Fowler said.

A former St Dominic’s student, Nick Pinch secured a continuing role with Emu Village Before and After School Care at the end of his traineeship in 2013.

Nick said he wants to encourage others

Sarah Coleman, Ryan Maestri and Nick Pinch are all successful former Council trainees and are encouraging others to follow in their footsteps to follow in his footsteps and take the opportunity to combine work and study.

“Lots of kids in my year went on to study teaching but they’re not sticking with it.

I’ve had a taste test and was paid to study – I think I would have done much better in Year 12 if someone was paying me to study then,” he said.

Ryan Maestri was Council’s youngest employee in 2005 when at 17 years of age he started as an Information Technology trainee. Today, he is a Health and Building Surveyor with Council, and completed a Diploma of Building Surveying.

“There are so many opportunities, the traineeship gave me an idea of what I might be interested in and then was very supportive when I was taking further study,” Mr Maestri said.

Sarah Coleman was a 2010 trainee in Council’s Workforce and Workplace department; experience that equipped her to find full time work in the competitive field of recruitment after her traineeship.

“I wouldn’t have gotten the role if it hadn’t been for the experience gained in my traineeship. The career coaching we received was also a huge advantage,” she said.

Ms Coleman returned to Council earlier this year as an Assistant HR officer and is currently studying a Diploma of Human Resource Management.

On August 19 Council is holding an information night for Business Administration and IT traineeships and on August 21 on Childcare. Applications close in October 2014 and trainees will start work in January 2015. For more information, go to Council’s website or call 4732 8212.

Fried chicken fans from all over Penrith will next week be given the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes at their local KFC store to witness how the popular fast-food chain cooks its famous Original Recipe chicken.

KFC Australia’s Chief Marketing Officer, Nikki Lawson, said she’s looking forward to sharing the secrets behind KFC’s great tasting food.

“We’re excited for Aussies to go behindthe-scenes and see first-hand how we prepare our famous Original Recipe chicken,” she said.

“Many people think that all our KFC cooks do is drop frozen chicken into a deep fryer but there’s a lot more to it than that.

“We take a lot of pride in our unique cooking process, hand-coating our fresh chicken with flour and the Colonel’s secret 11 herbs and spices throughout the day to deliver the iconic taste people know and love.”

Taking place next Saturday, August 23, locals will be taken on a free 30 minute tour where they’ll be shown how KFC makes its famous Original Recipe chicken. They’ll also get to taste and

Students will witness a car crash dramatisation Far removed from the latest action flicks where the hero always seems to survive the most horrific car accidents, petrol tanker explosions and the like, local school students will be amongst over 20,000 students who will witness a highly confronting car crash reenactment at Homebush next week.

The reenactment is part of the ‘bstreetsmart’ education program that aims to reduce the injury and death toll of young drivers on the roads.

Starting on Tuesday, students from local schools including Cambridge Park High School, Caroline Chisholm College, Cranebrook High School, Kingswood High School, Mamre Anglican School, Penrith Anglican College, Penrith Christian School, Colyton High School and Erskine Park High School will witness the crash reenactment and listen to the stories of young car crash survivors.

Now in its ninth year, bstreetsmart has grown in popularity since it was started

in 2006 by Westmead Hospital trauma coordinators, Julie Seggie and Stephanie Wilson.

“The car crash dramatisation really hits home for many of the students,” Ms Seggie said.

“Listening to the real life stories presented by car crash survivors with a brain or spinal injury makes it very clear that they are not invincible, it could happen to them.”

The stories also highlight the fact that crashes do not just have an impact on the driver.

“It certainly has a ripple effect that radiates far beyond just them as an individual,” Ms Seggie said.

“Many car crash survivors lose the ability to work again, they lose contact with their friends and it can place an enormous amount of strain on the family.

It’s not black and white. It’s not simply a matter of life or death – there are many shades of grey in between.”

he Great Walk Foundation is a group of committed people who undertake a walk from Bathurst to Blaxland each year to raise money for charity.

The Foundation’s mission is to focus on the greater needs within the Penrith, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury regions.

The Foundation has raised in excess of $600,000 and many local charities and organisations have benefited.

Among the charities who have received generous donations from the Foundation is Great Community Transport.

Great Community Transport was delighted to receive a Tarago van in May 2012 to transport Blue Mountains residents to their medical appointments.

Great Community Transport has a number of ‘Family’ vehicles named in honour of Great Community Transport volunteers who have passed away from cancer and who are greatly missed.

In keeping with this tradition, the new Tarago was named in honour of Jimmy Small.

Jim was a long-time resident of Winmalee and Yellow Rock. He was dedicated to the communities he lived and worked in and was a great supporter of the Foundation.

The Foundation again approached Great Community Transport back in April of this year to say it would like to donate another vehicle.

The newly arrived vehicle, a Tarago, has been named ‘Bruce Carter’ after another supporter of the Great Walk Foundation who passed away.

Look out for ‘Bruce’ as he travels all around Penrith taking local residents to their medical appointments.

This week we all heard the tragic news that actor and comedian, Robin Williams, had died from suicide. More so than most celebrity deaths, the comments on my social media feeds were that of shock and genuine sadness at the passing of this comedic genius. Many wondered how someone so brilliantly able to use humour to entertain millions of people could succumb to depression.

If nothing else, the ‘positive’ effect of a tragedy like this is that it gets people talking again about depression. And in the business world, the incidence of depression is remarkably high.

As those of you who are business owners know, there can be a great deal of pressure. Some of this is from external sources, such as clients, finances, the workload itself, and so on. But a lot of this pressure also comes from ourselves. We want to succeed! And sometimes we can put inordinate amounts of pressure on ourselves to do so.

Leanne Faulkner, founder of successful company Billie Goat Soap, was interviewed a few years ago about her struggle with depression. She said, “I used to

read all these stories about successful entrepreneurs and wonder why I was such a failure”. She likened the superficial stories she read to a “schoolgirl with anorexia who thinks that super models are the norm”, and took a long time to “realise that very successful entrepreneurs are the exception”.

Small business owners are often less likely to seek help because they may feel that if people know you have depression, it will negatively affect your business.

There is no shame in seeking help. In fact, it is no different to the help you would seek in any other aspect of your business.

Toyota’s Corolla is Australia’s best-selling car in 2014 after topping the sales charts in each of the past five months.

Combined sales of the popular hatch and sedan totalled 3,800 last month, lifting the Corolla’s tally to almost 26,000 for the year – enough to give it a narrow overall lead.

Sales success for Corolla and HiLux – which also passed 3,100 sales for the month – were major contributors to Toyota’s market-leading result in July.

Australians bought almost 16,500 Toyota vehicles for the month, while no other competing brand reached 9,000 sales.

Eight Toyota vehicles led their individual market segments in July – Yaris, Corolla, Camry, 86, LandCruiser 200, HiLux 4x2, HiLux 4x4 and HiAce bus.

Toyota’s Executive Director of Sales and Marketing, Tony Cramb said Toyota and the industry were benefiting from continued strong demand for new vehicles.

“New vehicle sales remain close to record levels, which is extremely encouraging for the industry’s prospects in the second half of the year,” he said.

“All the signs are that the economy and consumer confidence are solid with no indications of a major upswing or a downturn of any significance.

“Toyota is leading the sales charts for what is shaping up as the 12th consecutive year based on strong performances by Corolla and HiLux, as well as RAV4 enjoying its best year on record.”

ocal rugby union fans were paid a visit by some of the best players in the world last week when the Wallabies arrived in town.

The Australian rugby union team, including high profile stars Israel Folau and Kurtley Beale, visited Penrith’s Mondo precinct last Friday afternoon to wrap up their five day rural road trip, known as the ‘Bush2Bledisloe’.

The initiative, which was created by coach Ewen McKenzie, was designed to bring local rugby supporters closer to the national team with a range of community activities including meeting their Wallabies heroes and posing with the prestigious Bledisloe Cup. More than 500 people lined up during the family-friendly timeslot to have their memorabilia signed and pictures taken, with ex-NRL superstar Israel Folau proving most popular.

Speaking with the Weekender, coach McKenzie said he was very pleased the Penrith community came out in force to support his side.

good roll up. It’s been brilliant... we’ve had great turnouts everywhere we’ve been plus another good turnout here,” he said.

“It’s been a long week but a fruitful one.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said he was delighted to welcome such a champion team like the Wallabies to his city.

Lewis vows to keep fighting after cruel Commonwealth Games disqualification NATHAN TAYLOR

L

ondonderry boxer Daniel Lewis has opened up about the heartbreaking disqualification that cut short his Commonwealth Games campaign.

The 20-year-old was on the cusp of something special late last month over in Glasgow – he’d won his opening two bouts with ease and was due to meet India’s Mandeep Jangra in the quarter finals of the Men’s Welter (69kg) class.

However, a stray elbow to the eye by Nigeria’s Kehinde Ademuyiwa in the Round of the 16 saw Lewis receive a nasty cut that would shatter his dream of taking home gold.

Speaking with the Weekender, Lewis revealed what happened in the lead-up to finding out his Glasgow journey was officially over.

“The Nigerian fighter was rather lanky and tall and the fight was getting messy as he was throwing headbutts, elbows, all sorts of things,” Lewis said.

“Unfortunately I suffered a bad cut. I ended up winning the fight and had the

Daniel Lewis in Glasgow cut glued straight after. Two days later I was meant to fight against India in the quarter finals.

“I woke up at 6am and went into the sauna to lose some weight for the weighin, I lost two kilos. At the weigh-in I was told I was unable to continue my journey

to gold. I felt so much emotion but over the years in this sport I’ve learnt a lot, so I kept my cool and accepted it.”

After the disqualification, per Commonwealth Games rules, Lewis was very vocal about headgear being reintroduced for amateur fighters. Had headgear been worn

during Lewis’ fight against Ademuyiwa, he may have returned to Australia with a medal around his neck.

“I felt I could’ve went on to win gold, 100 per cent without a doubt,” Lewis declared.

“The headgear should 100 per cent come back, if anything bring them back and take them out in the finals where we can risk getting a cut. We fight five times a week, we can’t afford a cut when we put our life into this sport.”

While his time in Glasgow was full of mixed emotions, Lewis admits he enjoyed the best experience of his life and appreciated all the support he received since arriving back in the country late last week.

“The Comm Games would have to be the most memorable and proudest time of my whole boxing career. I’ll never forget walking out in front of 40,000 people at the opening ceremony and hearing the crowd roar,” he said.

“I keep thinking bigger and better things are to come and the fire in my belly is only growing.”

Lewis will return to training soon to prepare for the World Championships next year before setting his sights on the Olympics Games in Rio in 2016, and hopefully that elusive medal.

Family’s toughest challenge Three siblings set to create history as they prepare for English Channel swim

ocal resident Paul Hill and his siblings Luke and Tania have finally landed in England as they prepare to attempt to become the first sibling trio to swim the gruelling English Channel.

The siblings have been training for the swim for years and finally, are only days or possibly hours away from making their attempt.

There is a two-week window in which the trio has to make their attempt and they won’t choose a day or time to make the plunge until the conditions are perfect.

Luke Hill said it’s a nervous but exciting time for the family.

“We are nervous about the swim, which covers 41 kilometres,” he said.

“The thought of having to battle the elements such as jellyfish, hypothermia, seasickness, not to mention the hundreds of commercial ships that pass through the channel daily is daunting, but we are determined to do it.”

The trio are not just completing the swim for bragging rights either, they are

Together they have raised over $42,000 for the Cancer Council.

The incredibly tough swim, which will be in water as cold as 12 degrees Celsius,

BOWLS // Mick Gilfoyle LAST WEEKEND saw the culmination of the 2014 State Pennants and Zone 5 put up a magnificent effort.

Penrith in Grade 2 made it to the semi finals but were defeated by Cabramatta who then went on to win the final by 26 shots. Grade 3 saw Molong battle on well in the final only just getting beaten 59-55.

Crookwell won their first two matches but were beaten in round 3 by semi finalists Barmedman in Grade 4. Canowindra won their first match in Grade 5; however that was it for the rest of the event. Grade 6 saw Zone 5 having a new State Pennant flag holder, Lawson. They won two out of the three matches only by three shots in the sectionals however they touched up Westport in the final. Congratulations

Lawson. And finally Gulgong made it to the final only to go down to Coonamble fairly convincingly. Well don’t to all our representatives as this is the best result Zone 5 has had in years.

Saturday, August 9 saw the result of bowlers playing a wrong bias over the last year at Penrith Bowling Club, when Patron/Life Member Vic Orchard presented Dr Amanda Stevanovic and Cancer nurse Anita Henrichson-Fitch with a cheque for $1500 that players had paid for after sending down a wrong bias. The Ladies President Merle Gollan and Vic thanked the Doctor for the great work carried out by the Penrith Cancer Care Centre. Dr Stevanovic thanked the club for their donation, which will go to cancer research.

ith the Sydney women’s AFL finals getting underway this weekend, the Penrith Ramettes say they are up for the challenge despite losing to their opponents, Wollongong, on both occasions this season.

The Ramettes, who finished the regular season in third position, will take on the second-placed Saints this Sunday morning in a non-elimination qualifying final.

The Ramettes only lost four games all year with two of those losses coming courtesy of the Saints who defeated them in Round 8 (74-16) and then again in Round 13 (37-9).

Despite only scoring 25 points against the Saints across both matches, Ramettes captain Jennifer Brown believes all that goes out the window come finals time.

“It’s all wiped clean when it comes to finals. Everyone is back on an even playing field,” she said.

“Playing the Saints on two occasions already this season we have enough knowledge on their players and tactics

Last weekend the Ramettes finished the 2014 regular season on a high defeating Gosford 44-17.

The high-scoring win took the Ramettes to 12 victories for the year, their best result since they entered the league in 2012.

Brown said if things don’t go the Ramettes’ way during this year’s finals, she’ll still be incredibly proud of her side.

“The best season we had prior to this one was a draw in our very first year then we had 17 straight losses,” she said.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the girls this season in regards to how far we’ve come.

It’s been a very long year with pre-season training and football, so it’s nice that everything we’ve worked towards is now coming to fruition.”

Penrith take on Wollongong at 11am this Sunday, August 17 at Blacktown Sportspark.

If the Ramettes lose against the Saints on Sunday they’ll take on the winner from the UTS Shamrocks and Auburn Giants elimination final next week.

ven though their season was probably full of more lows than highs, the Penrith Emus didn’t let that bother them at their annual presentation ceremony last Friday night.

Held at their unofficial headquarters of Uncle Bucks Tavern in Mt Druitt, the Emus handed out 18 awards across all grades as well as to the dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the club ticking along.

Winning the club’s First Grade Player of the Year Award was none other than popular forward Ethan Robinson-Mate, who enjoyed a breakout season as a member of the Emus.

Penrith Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu said Robinson-Mate and 2014 Grade Rookie of the Year Robbie Mate showed the most commitment, consistency and professionalism throughout the season.
