Desperate bid to preserve our history Past under threat: Council wants two historical sites in Penrith added to the State Heritage Register ALENA HIGGINS

he race is on to protect two of the region’s most important historical sites.

Penrith Councillor Karen McKeown is leading the charge to have Castlereagh’s Hadley Park and the Castlereagh Cemetery added to the State Heritage Register after they were found to be unlisted, with the former under threat from development.

“Everyone thought [Hadley Park] had already been listed,” Cr McKeown said.

“It’s quite a revelation that it’s still out there and not listed, and I just feel really strongly about the fact that we need to do something to preserve it for future generations to enjoy.”

Standing on the original 1803 land grant on the floodplain alongside the Nepean River, Hadley Park contains two buildings – a two-storey farmhouse built in 1811 and a timber cottage circa 1806, both in original form.

Cr McKeown said she was alarmed to read an article in the NSW National Trust Magazine’s April to June 2017 edition reporting that the future of the property hangs in the balance following its “glaring omission” from the Register.

Author Sean Johnson writes that “even more worrying” was the State Government’s recent decision just before Christmas last year to push through an amendment to the Penrith Lakes Scheme’s State Environmental Planning Policy, which he said “appears to weaken protection of the site’s heritage values and particularly its historic surrounding areas”.

At the request of Mayor John Thain, Council will also ask that Castlereagh Cemetery be considered for inclusion when it writes to the NSW Heritage Minister, Gabrielle Upton and local MPs about the issue.

Cr Thain said the cemetery, situated on the outer-edge of Cranebrook, housed the sacred resting place of some of Australia’s first colonial inhabitants.

“There’s quite a significant amount of First Fleet graves buried there,” he said.

Apart from being afforded greater protection, inclusion on the State Heritage Register will assist with grants for reparation and restorative activities, Cr McKeown said.

“All these stories are getting lost and I don’t know that we have been all that good in preserving our heritage and I think that we really need to make positive steps in that direction,” she said.

ven Labor leader Luke Foley would have had to look deep into the depths of the Budget papers to find all that much to complain about this week.

Not surprisingly, Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Treasurer Dominic Perrottet delivered an exceptionally strong Budget on Tuesday with a number of big ticket announcements.

That’s partly because New South Wales is in a strong financial position and partly because Berejiklian and Perrottet are still on their political honeymoon – aiming to not only win over voters but ensure those voters know who they are (Perrottet in particular has a pretty low public profile).

Much of the Budget was already well-known, either via deliberate leaks to the media in the week leading up to Tuesday’s official handing down of the economic blueprint, or as a result of the Government already announcing projects over the last few years.

Mike Baird left New South Wales as a State under construction (that’s a good thing) and now Berejiklian and Perrottet must carefully guide the completion of a plethora of projects across a range of portfolios.

But as good as Tuesday’s Budget was, and as good a position as the State Government is in, there’s plenty of unanswered questions that will hang over Berejiklian and her team in the years to come. They’re unlikely to be answered until we next go to the polls in 2019.

For example, will the upgraded M4 and WestConnex ultimately be celebrated by motorists, or does it risk turning into a giant white elephant because of an exorbitant toll charge that already has

motorists across western Sydney voicing their anger in big numbers.

The Government is banking on the smoother and quicker ride winning over motorists, who will feel the pinch in their wallet every time they head into the city via the main arterials (a trip that is currently free of charge).

Will the State Government’s new measures to get first home buyers into the property market actually work, or will they just drive up property prices and create a level of competition that essentially wipes away the discount?

Locally, will we be applauding the new river crossing when walking or riding our bikes around the Nepean, or shaking our heads at its ever-growing price tag?

If the answers all go the State Government’s way, they may just win by a record margin in 2019.

But if something goes wrong along the line, it could spell danger.

We all want Governments to “do something”. We all want them to be progressive and plan for the future – in fact I’ve written plenty of times in this very column about the lack of foresight some administrations have.

But when you do something, when you build, construct and re-create, it means disruption. And you have to find the balance between disrupting a city to the point of frustration, and undertaking work for the greater good.

That is the delicate situation Berejiklian and Perrottet currently face.

Personally, I think they’re on a winner and Labor will find it difficult to gain much ground in the next couple of years.

But I’m also enjoying Labor having a stronger state presence locally via the very talented and capable Prue Car. While Car is the Member for Londonderry, she’s essentially taken on the role of speaking for the entire western Sydney region, particularly Penrith and Mulgoa.

There was a time Labor’s voice was weak in this area because of the Liberal dominance that existed across the three key electorates of Penrith, Mulgoa and Londonderry.

The change is refreshing, even though it may be a little frustrating for our sitting members who are perhaps used to a much softer run.

Tuesday’s Budget is hard to fault, and this is a Government that may be hard to fault in the years to come, but if they do slip up, there’s nothing wrong with having someone hold them to account.

There’s even a few around town wanting to suggest that Prue Car is a future leader of the Labor Party. We’ll have to let time and fate decide that one.

he 2017-18 State Budget has seen record levels of investment in vital community infrastructure like hospitals, schools and roads, and Penrith is set to flourish through funding this year.

“Penrith is a big winner in this Budget,” Penrith State MP, Stuart Ayres declared.

“This Budget demonstrates that Penrith truly does benefit from strong economic management.”

In what will help relieve pressure at Nepean Hospital, funding for a $576 million major upgrade has been secured.

The upgrades, first announced last November by then Premier Mike Baird, will expand and enhance services including maternity and neonatal care, emergency, surgical, and inpatient and outpatient services.

The catch is that the upgrades will span across several years, with completion set for 2023.

“This Budget is seeing massive capital investments in our local schools and Nepean Hospital, and includes critical upgrades to Northern and Mulgoa Roads that will ensure our arterial roads expand as our community grows,” Mr Ayres said.

Schools will be celebrating as upgrades are in the works for Penrith Public School and Claremont Meadows Public School, while a new hall is set for Kingswood High.

Parents will also be happy as their wallets get a bit fatter thanks to the Active Kids Rebate that aims to reduce barriers to sports participation for young people in western Sydney.

“Our Active Kids Rebate will put $100 per school-aged child back in the pocket of every parent of a child who plays sport in Penrith,” Mr Ayres said.

“The biggest sport and recreation Budget on record will tackle childhood obesity, encourage active lifestyles and invest in both our major and community sporting facilities.”

Additional projects funded include $4 million for social housing; $830,000 for new boating infrastructure; and funding to continue the road upgrades along The Northern Road and Mulgoa Road. $15.9 million has also been allocated to continue the upgrade of Penrith Station.

“This Budget delivers real change for families, retirees, small business owners and residents living across the electorate of Penrith, laying the foundation for future growth across our community,” Mr Ayres said.

he Mulgoa electorate is set to benefit from massive transport investments, preparing the area for the Badgerys Creek Airport and continued population growth.

“This Budget delivers real change for families, retirees, small business owners and residents living across the electorate of Mulgoa, laying the foundation for future growth across our community,” State Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said.

Across western Sydney, the NSW Government is spending more than $1 billion to ensure existing and new roads will meet the future growth of the region, with many projects occurring in the Mulgoa electorate.

“This is fantastic news for the local community and we are getting on with delivering vital arterial roads to ensure we can support residential and commercial growth and meet future traffic demand,” Mrs Davies said.

“By 2031 more than half of all new jobs in Sydney will be created in western Sydney, so we’re getting ahead to ensure road users and workers are connected with jobs across the region.

“We want to ensure our roads will be able to cope with the unprecedented growth this region will experience in the coming years.”

While the upgrades might mean frustrating road works for some time to come, the end result will see commuters get home faster to spend more time with their families.

Mrs Davies said that a $648 million of combined Federal and NSW Government funding will be used to continue building and upgrading roads to support the Badgerys Creek Airport.

“This funding includes the completion of the first stage of The Northern Road upgrade between Camden Valley Way, The Old Northern Road and Peter Brock Drive, and the first stage of the Bringelly Road upgrade between Camden Valley Way and King Street,” she said.

An additional $21 million has been allocated for planning of the M12 Motorway, the proposed direct link to the new airport from the M7 Motorway at Cecil Hills to The Northern Rd in Luddenham. $38.9 million will also go towards a community based palliative care service in the Western Sydney Local Health District.

Mrs Davies said Tuesday’s Budget delivered “real change” for her area.

abor says Police in Penrith are being stretched to the limit with Penrith Police Station six officers short based on recent operational capacity figures.

Member for Londonderry, Prue Car was joined by NSW Shadow Minister for Justice and Police, Guy Zangari at Penrith Police Station on Monday, to discuss how the State Government has “failed to deliver for the region”.

“Six officers might not seem like a lot, but over a scope of a six-week period when you’ve got one officer equaling 19 shifts, that’s a lot,” Mr Zangari said.

“If there is a call out and they’re understaffed, a domestic violence call out may be delayed.

“When they do get back, there is a pile of work that they need to do, and then that cuts out on Youth Liaison Officers and other specialist officers.”

The figures highlight a growing concern across the state as policing remains under resourced.

The vacancies mean that in the Penrith Local Area Command alone, 114 shifts are covered by officers through overtime before taking into consideration additional

Ms Car said the statistics reflect that local cops are overworked, and implored

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres, the previous Minister for Police and Emergency Services, to fight for the community.

“The community has the right to ask,

‘what good is having the Member for Penrith in the Cabinet if we’re constantly denied what we’re entitled to’,” she said.

“The area is exploding in terms of population, so we’re shouldering the lion’s share of the growth.

“We need six police officers just to operate at the population level we have now, let alone the population we will have in six months or two years.”

But Mr Ayres didn’t take kindly to Labor’s claims, labelling Mr Zangari a “clown” in an angry response.

“Penrith has the lowest crime rates we have seen in years and this Labor clown swans into Penrith and forgets to count officers on sick and annual leave as well as those on training,” Mr Ayres said.

“There are now more Police on the beat in NSW than any year under Labor.”

Mr Zangari said unless Mr Ayres begins advocating for Penrith and the Government invests in police, no amount of shuffling staff will be a proactive solution.

“The Government has neglected policing,” Mr Zangari said.

“Rather than the Government talk about shuffling resources here and there, they need to put more troops on the ground.

“It’s just indicative of a Government that is hell-bent on the budget bottom line.”

Teen girls assault security guard and police officers at shops EMILY NEWTON

wo police officers and a security guard have been assaulted by teenagers after an attempted theft at Westfield Penrith on Monday afternoon.

At around 3.45pm, a staff member at the clothing store Glue witnessed a young female, who was part of a group, appear to steal a jacket.

A security guard approached the group and removed the jacket from the girl.

As a result, another 15-year-old female from Lethbridge Park then struck the security guard to the face.

Other members of the group tried to prevent the security guard from having access to the shoplifting female.

The guard managed to remove the shoplifting female from the centre and, in the process, noticed a Penrith detective car driving by, flagging them down for assistance.

Security then identified the group of youths to the two detectives.

When approached by the detectives, a police spokesperson said the 15-year-old female from Lethbridge Park “kicked out and struck a detective in the face”.

“A 14-year-old from Marayong has intervened, preventing police from attempting an arrest,” the spokesperson said.

“All six began yelling and screaming.”

A 14-year-old female from St Marys was approached by the second detective with the security guard.

She then also struck the second detective and kicked the security guard.

Three youths were arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station.

All three were charged with ‘Affray’, while the 14-year-old from St Marys was also charged with ‘Assault Police’ and the 15-year-old from Lethbridge Park was also charged with ‘Assault’ and ‘Assault Police’.

They will face the Children’s Court.

Twitter menace to be released from prison next month

The Colyton man who claimed to be planning a terrorist attack on Australian soil has had his jail time downgraded to five months on appeal due to mental illness.

Ciaron Patrick Mcgee, 38, was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment with a oneyear non-parole period on June 2 after pleading guilty to ‘using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend’.

However, with time already served, he will now be eligible for release on July 1 after Penrith District Court Judge, Stephen Hanley, determined his schizophrenia would not be adequately treated in custody and increased his parole.

During last Friday’s severity appeal, Mcgee, an intravenous ‘ice’ addict, again admitted to posting the disturbing and violent threats on Twitter and Facebook as well as hashtagging Islamic State.

While his lawyer conceded there was strong public interest in these types of offences given the current “global climate”, she submitted Mcgee’s only intention was to raise awareness of the atrocities happening in Syria and Iraq and other themes of injustice.

“He’s been focused on these global issues for six years... and has done nothing about it except post on the Internet,” she said, adding this was not to take away from the seriousness of the offence.

The court heard Mcgee, who was not being treated at the time of the offences and would stop taking his medication because it made him feel “depressed” and “dull”, had asked for assistance in custody but his requests had been falling on “deaf ears”.

The Federal prosecutor reiterated the Commonwealth DPP’s concerns that Mcgee would fail to comply with drug and mental health treatment, as well as fears he could be preyed upon and recruited

by ISIS to do their “dirty work” while in a vulnerable mental state.

Mcgee, who denied ever being con-

tacted by anyone from the terror organisation, now concedes his behaviour was “unacceptable” and “crossed the line”, his lawyer said.

Judge Hanley said a “balance had to be struck” to avoid punishing the offender for having a mental illness, but also to ensure community protection.

He found he was not satisfied Mcgee had any intention of carrying out his threats and was also not satisfied six months of supervision on parole was sufficient, determining fears that he may be susceptible to potential recruitment would be “better guarded against” by a longer period of supervision.

Mcgee, who will resume living with his mother upon his release, is ordered to follow the directions of the St Marys Mental Health Team, take prescribed medications and undertake urinalysis as part of his recognizance release order.

Man invited mate to have sex with underage teenager

A 19-year-old who invited his friend to have sex with an underage teen against her wishes has been sentenced to a maximum four years and four months jail.

Christopher Grover will spend at least the next 18 months behind bars after pleading guilty to having sexual intercourse with a child aged between 14 and 16, aggravated sexual intercourse in company with a child aged between 14 and 16 and procuring a child over 14 for illegal sexual activity.

Penrith District Court heard the victim and offender, then aged 15 and 18 respectively, met through social media and had sex on August 6, 2016, with Grover unaware 15 was under the age of consent and sex with the teen was against the law.

Two days later, the pair met up again, with the victim expressly telling Grover she wanted no one else at the house, to which he agreed.

But unbeknownst to her, he began orchestrating for his mate to be present, explicitly texting: “Got us a r**t. She thinks

it’s just me but you’re coming, lol”.

While the victim did not verbalise her objection when the co-offender arrived, agreed facts read out in court reveal she typed “I am not doing anything with him here” in the note section of her phone and showed it to Grover, which Judge Nicole Norman said “speaks volumes”.

“He disregarded her clear indication to him,” she said during his sentence hearing last Friday.

The court heard the victim, who alerted police to the harrowing incident the following day, spent months having medical tests done as a result of the men’s conduct.

Grover, who was on conditional liberty at the time, was arrested on August 9, 2016 and bail refused.

During oral evidence, the former Lithgow High School student apologised to the victim, who was in court to hear the judgement handed down, saying “I should never have put you through this”.

Grover’s lawyer stressed that Judge Norman take into account Grover’s “underdeveloped maturity” when deciding his penalty.

He is eligible for release on parole on December 8, 2018.

Man stumbled across $100k in mobile home

A Glenmore Park man who allegedly stole $100,000 worth of cash hidden in a wardrobe when he stumbled into the wrong caravan has been refused bail.

Penrith Local Court heard Troy John Hobbs, 44, was dressed in a hospital gown after discharging himself from Nepean Hospital following a suspected drug overdose late last month, and had gone inside the mobile home to get a shirt when he uncovered the loot.

His lawyer said it wasn’t until he opened the wardrobe that he realised he had wandered into the wrong caravan.

He said his client disputed the figure that he is alleged to have taken, saying it was only $43,000.

“He wants to plead guilty to that and nothing more,” he said.

The court heard Hobbs, who was charged with larceny and two counts of possessing cannabis, had initially told police he had won the money gambling but then made “frank” and “open” admissions.

Magistrate Stephen Corry said he clearly had a long history of drug-related offending and was a flight risk, before denying bail.

“Whether it’s $100,000 or $40,000, there is a strong likelihood of custody given his record,” he said.

His matter was adjourned to yesterday to see if he was successful for inclusion in the drug court.

Man banned from driving busted behind the wheel

A Cranebrook man currently barred from driving to 2032 will serve at least 10 days in the slammer after being busted behind the wheel again.

Jeffery Haynes faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with driving while disqualified and was sentenced to a minimum four months jail.

The court heard the father-of-three was on his way to the shops to pick up formula for his ill son when he was sprung by police. Magistrate Stephen Corry told the offender he couldn’t keep disregarding court orders, before sentencing him to 10 months jail with a four-month nonparole period.

Haynes applied for appeal bail later that day but was knocked back by Magistrate Georgia Knight, who noted he had enjoyed “the leniency of the court time and time again”.

“He is a serial offender as far as driving while disqualified or driving while cancelled is concerned,” she said.

Magistrate Knight said there was “very little likelihood” his appeal would be successful, but did concede his sentence may be shortened. He is due to front Penrith District Court on June 26.

Erskine Park: Trio robbed by group of Pacific Islander men

Police are appealing for information following an armed robbery that occurred on Sunday, June 18.

At about 12.50pm a 19-year-old from Summerland Point, a 20-year-old from Erskine Park and a 20-year-old from St Clair were at a shopping centre car park in Erskine Park.

It is alleged that the three males were approached by six to seven males of Pacific Islander appearance, aged between 18 and 22.

One of the Islander males was holding a glass beer bottle when he allegedly demanded property from the Erskine Park man who refused.

The Islander male has smashed the bottle and again demanded the property of the Erskine Park man who then handed it over.

As this occurred, the St Clair and Summerland Point men have began to run but were chased by the other Islander males.

They were caught and also had their property stolen from them.

Investigations are continuing and police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

St Marys: Man arrested after frightening domestic assault

A 39-year-old St Marys man has been arrested after assaulting his partner multiple times.

On Friday, June 15 at 11.30am, a 29-yearold Willmot female and her domestic partner, the 39-year-old male were walking on Queen Street, St Marys.

It is alleged the parties have engaged in a verbal argument, and the woman has crossed the road.

The male has then run up to the woman and shoulder charged her, causing her head and shoulder to hit a shop window.

The pair continued walking together, but when they returned to a house in St Marys it is further alleged that a conversa-

tion lead to another assault and the man making threats to harm the woman.

As a result of the assaults, the woman has sustained a fracture to her right clavicle.

The 39-year-old man was arrested and charged with ‘Stalk/intimidate intend fear physical etc harm (domestic)’, ‘Common assault’ and ‘Assault occasioning actual bodily harm’.

He will appear at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, July 4.

Penrith: Pawn shops in the spotlight during operation

On Thursday, June 15 an operation was conducted in Penrith targeting pawn shops.

Penrith Local Area Command joined the Pawn Brokers Unit and North West Metro region for the operation that investigated the compliance of pawnbrokers in the area.

Four businesses were audited, and two breaches were issued.

10 items have been placed on hold and are currently under further investigation.

A 44-year-old Penrith man has been arrested after stealing a caravan from Derby Street.

Following his arrest on Tuesday, June 13, investigations were made that linked the man to the theft of a large sum of cash and a generator that occurred on May 20.

Information received by police indicated that the male deposited a large sum of money into a joint bank account.

As a result, a search warrant was executed on Wednesday, June 14 for a residence at Lucasville Rd, Glenbrook where police recovered the generator and a small amount of prohibited drugs.

The man was charged with a range of offences.

He was bail refused and had two court dates set – one yesterday (Thursday, June 22) and another on Tuesday, July 4.

De facto relationships All de facto couples, including samesex couples, have the same rights as married couples under the Family Law Act in relation to the distribution of property.

If you have recently separated from your partner, you can make an application to the court for a ‘de facto property settlement’ if you have either been with your de facto partner for a period of at least two years in total, you have a child together, you have made a substantial contribution to the property or finances of your partner, or if your relationship has been registered under a State or Territory law.

If there is a dispute as to the existence of a de facto relationship, the court will look at a variety of factors including the length of the relationship, living arrangements, the degree of financial dependence or interdependence, and whether you owned any property together, to name a few.

It is important to note that you do not need to be living with your partner to establish a de facto relationship in the eyes of the Court.

You have two years from the date of separation with your de facto partner to apply to the court for a property settle-

ment. If you have reached an agreement with your partner in relation to the distribution of your assets, you can register your agreement with the court in the form of Consent Orders. These Orders will provide you with an exemption from stamp duty if you are required to transfer any property in your asset pool.

If you are unable to reach an agreement with your partner, you can apply to the court to determine the property settlement for you. It will be compulsory, subject to some exceptions, for yourself and your partner to attend mediation before filing with the court. The court will consider several factors when deciding how to divide your assets fairly and justly, including what assets were brought into the relationship, the net value of all current assets, financial and non-financial contributions made, and any future needs (including the care of any children of the relationship).

Warning over phone scam Police are issuing a warning for members of the public to be wary of potential phone scammers, coaxing people into purchasing gift cards.

Police have received multiple reports from people who have received phone calls from someone claiming to

represent either the Australian Taxation Office or Telstra.

The caller tells the person that they have an outstanding bill or debt, before instructing them to purchase gift cards to cover the costs.

The calls are a scam.

Locals urged to support Red Nose Day Opportunity to have some fun and raise money for an important cause on Friday, June 30 EMILY NEWTON

ore than 3000 Australian families experience the sudden and unexpected death of a baby or child every year.

Red Nose is fighting for a future where no child dies suddenly and unexpectedly during pregnancy, infancy or in childhood.

Yvonne Amos, from Red Nose, said this Red Nose Day on Friday, June 30, the organisation is relying on the generosity of the community to help save the lives of babies and children.

“Red Nose Day is our annual fundraising event, it’s the one time nationally we go out with our messages, encouraging people to buy a red nose,” Ms Amos said.

“Funds raised go towards safe sleeping education, help with bereavement support for families that have lost someone, and research into Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.”

Red Nose Day is fundamental in highlighting the devastating reality as each day nine children die suddenly through sudden unexpected death in infancy.

“There’s still no known cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome,” Ms Amos said.

“Families are passionate about our cause because we provide information about reducing the risk.”

Money raised from the day goes to a range of services to help families, including counselling services, additional research and education programs.

Ms Amos is calling for support as the trauma of losing a child changes the whole community.

“There are about 60 people impacted by the death of one child,” she said.

“You’re really supporting Australian families at one of the most devastating times of their lives.

“Grief is universal but the journey is individual, so every person will face the situation in a slightly different way that is comfortable for them.”

Penrith Panthers boss Phil Gould and his team are throwing their support behind the campaign, helping to shine some light on the traumatic issue.

“It’s one of the great awareness programs that we’ve had in Australia, it’s been growing every year and it’s a really important subject,” Mr Gould said.

here’s no stopping local legend Brooke Jones, who has received yet another award for her dedication to the community.

Last week the Year 6 Surveyors Creek Public School student was named LiteracyPlanet’s National Community Legend for her fundraising work with her charity she founded at seven, Brooke’s Car Rally.

Brooke’s mum, Amanda Jones, said she is better known to the community as “Brooke’s Mum” and couldn’t be prouder.

“It was such a proud moment for my husband Gary and I, watching Brooke receive this award and I’m so grateful to LiteracyPlanet for the opportunities the new resources will bring to the students of Surveyors Creek Public School,” she said.

“I am proud of all Brooke has achieved and the compassion she shows.”

Brooke’s prize benefits her school as she has won $10,000 worth of technology resources, which will be used to purchase new iPads for the students.

Since founding her charity, Brooke has raised and donated over $40,000 for patient comfort and care at both the Nepean Cancer Care Centre and the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and their Epilepsy Research Unit.

Brooke Jones was presented her LiteracyPlanet National Community Legend Award by former AFL star turned TV personality Shane Crawford Her event this year will be held on Sunday, November 12 as Brooke aims to raise over $10,000 to pass the $50,000 total raised.

Program breaks down barriers and boosts confidence in kids

Local dancers bring a cheerful smile to aged care residents EMMA KOCBEK

hen a local aged care facility asked Penrith Ballroom Dance to perform for their residents, a seniors’ beginners class was probably not what they expected.

But that was what Principal Therese Walz delivered when she asked her senior students, all aged over 50, to bring happiness to the residents through dance.

Ms Walz was invited by the Governor Phillip Manor Aged Care Facility in Penrith to attend their annual Rhythm of Life Week and showcase her students in a dance performance.

“I was surprised that there was so many who were happy to get up and dance in front of people,” Ms Walz said.

Richard Harvey, aged in his 70s, was one of the 16 students that put his hand up to perform. He joined Penrith Ballroom Dance to finally learn the skill of dance.

“If I’m going to learn to dance I better do it before I get old,” Mr Harvey laughed.

Like many of his fellow students, this was the first time he performed in front of an audience.

Although he was apprehensive at first, Mr Harvey explained how rewarding it was to bring happiness to people.

onfidence is key for the next generation of job hunters, and Jamison High School students are bursting with it following their ‘work ready’ project last week.

The project, held on June 15, matched students and their career goals with volunteers from local employers and professionals to run mock interviews with students.

Co-chair of the school’s Action Team for Partnership, Sue Day, said the day gets kids work ready for tomorrow.

“Their next challenge is leaving school, going out into the world and trying to get a job,” she said.

“This is about building their confidence, so when they’re going for the real life position, they are confident.”

Representatives from Woolworths, Penrith Council, NSW Police Service, Lamrocks Solicitors and Penrith Toyota were just some of the business volunteers on hand to help the students get job ready.

A spokesperson from Woolworths said the day was helpful connecting kids to future employment opportunities, giving them the opportunity to gain interviewing experience and job knowledge.

Thanks for patience In reply to Jennifer Wallace’s letter last week (Weekender June 16), I completely understand the frustration that Jennifer expresses. There is no doubt during the construction of the upgraded Penrith Station, new bus Interchange and new multi deck car park there is significant disruption.

However the alternative of doing nothing is not acceptable in a growing community like Penrith. Under Labor we missed out on our fair share as our community grew around us. Now we are upgrading train stations, our hospital, Mulgoa and Northern Roads and our schools. We will always try to minimise the impacts and I thank everyone for their patience as we deliver infrastructure for a growing Penrith.

his is one of those articles that I am writing for myself as much as every reader! There are very few business owners who are not perpetually busy. And that busyness can result in stagnation: we do the same things week in, week out, in order to get the job done. While order and procedures are important to ensure efficiency, we do also have to remind ourselves to create situations where we can find inspiration. That inspiration might be simply coming to the conclusion that yes, everything is running as well as it can. But more often, creating the space for inspiration will result in amazing new ideas.

Here are some tips to generate inspiration: Be active Most people don’t get their best ideas sitting behind a desk. Walking or any type of exercise can help to clear your head and give you clarity of thought.

It also has the added bonus of unplugging you from technology. Try to go somewhere outdoors where the primary sound is that of nature.

Rest I saw an article recently about what you should do on a Sunday to get ready for the week. This may work for some, but for many people, this will be yet another day where we are not completely breaking from work. Even a short period of time tidying up emails or thinking about the week ahead can create additional stress. Give your head (and body) at least one day a week break from your business routine. This will clear your head to allow inspiration to flow, instead of being inundated with everyday tasks.

Change your scenery If your type of work allows it, take your ‘office’ mobile for an occasional day.

Head to the beach, or the mountains or the river, as new sights and sounds get your brain working differently, increasing the potential to find inspiration that could benefit your business.

Look around Actively look out for things to inspire you, and keep a record of your findings.

This might be taking interesting photos or notes.

e often need to acquire the services of other businesses.

How do you avoid pain and build a great relationship?

Conversely, how do others assess you, and how can you show yourself in a good light?

Recommendations Many people start by requesting recommendations from friends and acquaintances, or post on a Facebook group. Some recommendations are from people referring a friend or business network referral partner, but who have not actually used the service. Some may have had a genuinely great experience, but was it recent and doing what you require? Great recommendations don’t automatically equate to a great service!

Therefore you must conduct your own due diligence.

Conducting due diligence • Look for reviews and testimonials from real clients or review actual work completed • Make sure the business has adequate contact details – someone that hides behind Facebook Messenger or a

disposable free email address only may not be a safe option • Check whether they have an ABN and registered business name on abr. business.gov.au or on ASIC • On the abr site check for GST registration. A business may only issue a tax invoice if they are registered for GST, otherwise it must be an invoice with no GST • For an expensive contract you should be speaking to customer referees and questioning the process as well as the completion Negotiating Remember negotiation is not just on price, but also scope, value and quality.

If nothing else moves, expect no move in price. Agree on a contract that protects both parties.

Ongoing checks Make it business practice to regularly check that the ABN and GST status are current. If a business does not provide a valid ABN you must withhold 49 per cent of the payment and forward to the ATO. If you paid them already in full, you can be made to pay an equivalent penalty.

Peta Hiku’s future at Penrith was somewhat clouded, so it was no surprise to see him released on Monday to head overseas, where he’ll play in the UK Super League. Hiku, who made 20 appearances with Penrith since joining the club from Manly in 2016, was well-liked at the Panthers but just couldn’t nail down a full-time spot in the top squad when everyone was fit. “Unfortunately with the emergence of several of our young players and the way our team has developed, we can’t fit everyone in the team each week,” said Panthers Executive General Manager Phil Gould. “From a salary cap perspective we always knew someone would probably have to move on. Peta received a great offer from a strong club in the UK and it presents a wonderful opportunity for Peta and his young family.”

» I told you back in early May that I had

strong doubts we’d ever see Te Maire Martin back in first grade at Penrith. Last Friday, that prediction turned out to be 100 per cent correct with Martin signing a three year deal with North Queensland.

The 21-year-old knows he’ll face stiff competition to crack into the Cowboys’ top 17 but he was going nowhere at Penrith, clearly out of favour and stuck in reserve grade. The youngster also had to deal with some vicious rumours that were doing the rounds of the NRL world, rumours which we believe were incorrect. Panthers Executive General Manager Phil Gould hinted at that speculation in his parting words last week. “Te Maire Martin is an outstanding young man, of impeccable character, and extremely popular with everyone at this club,” he said. “During his time here at Panthers I could not fault Te Maire’s honesty or integrity.”

» The Panthers have also released lower grade utility Samisoni Langi, who will join Hiku in the UK Super League.

The Sunday Telegraph reported the same last weekend, suggesting that the move by Penrith to lock-up Griffin is gaining momentum. I’d expect a deal to be announced well before the end of the year.

» There’s already a strong ‘team of 91’ feel around Penrith with Greg Alexander doing plenty of work with the team’s halves, Royce Simmons running an official drinking club and of course Phil Gould in charge of the whole place. But there’s talk some more of the old days could be heading to Penrith with speculation that the club has sounded out current Manly Assistant Coach John Cartwright about a move back west next year. Any switch to Penrith would see Cartwright link up with his son Jed and nephew Bryce at the foot of the Mountains.

» While he’s not as active as he was on

T

he Panthers head to Townsville on Saturday afternoon for a rare 3pm kickoff at 1300SMILES Stadium, but if they plan to be smirking by the time the 80 minutes is over they’ll have to get through plenty of challenges.

The first is simply raw emotion. The Cowboys’ favourite son, Johnathan Thurston, is scheduled to join an elite club when he plays his 300th NRL game on Saturday.

Without question his team mates will lift for him in an effort to ensure the milestone game is memorable, and the Panthers will need to ensure they don’t get caught up in the euphoria.

Another challenge facing Penrith is the daunting nature of 1300SMILES Stadium.

Misleading by name, plenty of beaming smiles have been wiped off the faces of opposition teams, especially in recent seasons. The Panthers actually have a pretty good record in Townsville but are yet to win outside of New South Wales this year – a record they’d like to correct before returning home for two straight games in Sydney.

While the Panthers have won four straight matches, they won’t have the luxury of launching a surprise comeback on the Cowboys this weekend. If North Queensland get in front, their ability to manage a game could easily squeeze Penrith out of the contest, so it’s important the visitors aim to start well and put on a complete 80 minute display.

Experience is very much on North Queensland’s side. Penrith’s spine boasts

a fullback with only a handful of first grade games, a five-eighth who only started wearing the number 6 jersey less than a month ago, a halfback in his second season of top grade footy and a hooker who’s filling in for an injured veteran in Peter Wallace.

I’d go through the Cowboys spine but my fingers start to shake a little too much.

While North Queensland lost to Melbourne last weekend, their form line is a little off due to the Origin period, so you have to go back a fortnight to their 32-6 demolition of Parramatta in Darwin to appreciate just how good the side is going at the moment.

However it’s important to note that with Origin played in Sydney just a few days before this clash, there will be a few tired bodies out there and Paul Green would certainly have some worries over his game management.

What we need to see from Penrith is a determined effort from the forwards, who as a collective have been improving with every game this season.

This match presents a big opportunity for James Tamou to stand up and prove he’s worth the big pay packet that comes with him, especially against his former club, while Trent Merrin and Reagan Campbell-Gillard also need to have big games.

Penrith would know the importance of this clash, with Parramatta to take their position in the top eight if they can’t manage to get over the Cowboys. The bye has without doubt done the squad the world of good, and I think with a bit of luck on their side and a strong start, five wins in a row is very much on the cards.

Happy 300th JT, but the Panthers are coming to spoil the party.

anthers prop James Tamou will return to North Queensland for the first time since leaving the Cowboys this Saturday, but he isn’t quite sure what sort of reception he’ll receive from his former fans.

The 28-year-old spent eight seasons in Townsville, winning a premiership with the club back in 2015. However, salary cap pressure and a desire to move back to Sydney saw him land at the foot of the Mountains this season.

Speaking with Extra Time, Tamou said he’s been eyeing off a return up north ever since the NRL released the draw late last year.

“I’m looking forward to going back. I remember looking at this game when the draw came out and I’ve been keeping in

touch with some of the boys since I left,” he said.

While the former NSW Origin star was well liked by his peers and fans north of the border, he is preparing to cop some heat off Cowboys supporters.

“I think I might get a mixed reception from the fans,” Tamou admitted.

“Some of them I’ve been good friends with over the years but some of them get in your face a bit. Overall I’m looking forward to going back.”

Saturday afternoon’s match in Townsville against the Panthers will be a momentous occasion for the Cowboys club.

Not only is it Johnathan Thurston’s 300th NRL game but it will be the club’s first day game at home in recent memory.

“I think the last time they had a day game was at 5pm, which is the earliest timeslot I can remember in my eight years there,” Tamou said.

“I’m expecting the temperature to be

“I’ve mentioned a shorter warm up to the coaching staff, depending how the weather looks. I think we’ll be OK though, most of the boys look forward to day games anyway.”

Meanwhile, Tamou has opened up about the recent departures of two teammates in Te Maire Martin and Peta Hiku, who were released by the Panthers last weekend.

While Tamou admitted footy was a business, he was upset to see his good friends move on.

“It’s sad, it’s really sad. I remember talking to Peta before he left and told him he had to do what was best for his family,” Tamou said.

“Te Maire is such a special talent and he’s going to the right place (Cowboys). He’ll learn a lot up there and if he stays put, one day he’ll be leading that side.”

Thurston will be remembered as one of game’s greatest

he comparisons between Johnathan Thurston and Andrew Johns will be discussed forever – who was better?

The way the pair played the game, their competitiveness, how they stepped up in big moments – those two are certainly in the conversation of the greatest players of all time.

For Johnathan Thurston to play 300 NRL games, in a career that has spanned 16 years including two premierships, is an amazing achievement.

To be one of the most recognisable faces in the NRL for such a long time and keep playing at such a high level is incredible.

Any time you line up against JT it’s always a challenge that you enjoy because you know how great he is and how much extra you’re going to have to play – not just to beat the team that you’re playing against, but to match him in effort and competitiveness. He’s the greatest to ever do it along those lines.

The trouble for the Panthers this Saturday afternoon is they run into JT on his 300th game. Penrith are going to have to try and take the sting out of the contest

early, kick long, defend well and try to not let the large ‘JT adoring’ crowd get to them.

I remember playing with JT in the first ever Indigenous All Stars game back in 2010, I actually roomed with him as well.

In that game I was playing left centre and JT was playing left half, and he passed me the final pass for the match-winning try.

Looking back on it now, that to me was one of the best moments of my career.

The biggest lesson I learned from JT during that week in camp was how much preparation he puts into his body and how much he looks after himself. When on the training paddock, he was sharp and nothing but footy mattered to him.

However, once the session was over, JT relaxed and completely switched off from footy. He’s developed a great balance and that’s why he has achieved all he has in the game so far.

Rooming with JT all those years ago was the best week in camp, it was awesome.

It was an experience I’ll be able to tell my kids about one day.

To sit back now as a fan and watch a legend like Johnathan Thurston play 300 NRL games, I think that’s pretty cool.

oom Panthers halfback Nathan Cleary will come up against his idol in Johnathan Thurston for the first time this Saturday afternoon in Townsville.

It’s a daunting prospect for the young halfback, who was all of four-years-old when Thurston made his NRL debut with Canterbury way back in 2002. When Thurston played his first Origin match, Cleary was just out of Kindergarten.

While the 19-year-old is looking forward to going up against a future Immortal, all eyes will be on the Queensland half who is set to play his 300th first grade game.

“It probably adds a bit of toughness to the match,” Cleary said of Thurston’s milestone.

“Thurston’s a great player, probably the best in the game. To go up there for his 300th will be tough, but I’m really looking forward to the challenge and hopefully we can knock them off.”

When Cleary goes up against Thurston tomorrow afternoon, it will make for a very interesting match-up considering the 2015 Premiership winner was just about signed, sealed and delivered to the Panthers a number of years ago.

After Thurston decided to stick with the Cowboys, Penrith went through a number of halves before Cleary started knocking down the door mid last year.

Cleary, who is regarded as one of the game’s next big halfbacks and a future representative star himself, said the Cowboys leader is his idol.

“Yeah definitely… I’ve always looked up to him,” he said.

“He’s a great player and I think most halves coming through the grades look up to him and admire him.”

While a lot of the focus will be on whether the Cowboys’ representative halves back up from Origin on Wednesday, in particular Thurston, Penrith fans can’t wait to see the continued progression of their own halves pairing in Cleary and Matt Moylan.

The Panthers skipper, who made his move into the halves three weeks ago, is Cleary’s fourth halves partner in 28 games, including his third this year.

Cleary said while he wasn’t expecting to play with Moylan in the halves this season, their combination is coming along quicker than expected.

“It’s started off pretty well, he’s playing really good footy at five-eighth and if we can continue building on that combination, then I think it can only help the team,” he said.

“Moyza’s really helped me out by dominating the team and he really gets involved in attack. He’s obviously the captain too and leads by example, which is really helpful.”

While Cleary and Moylan’s partnership is working a treat, the former St Dominic’s student was sad to see his original halves partner this season, Te Maire Martin, leave the club.

The Kiwi international was finally let go last week, to join the Cowboys, after an unsettled first half of the season that saw him dropped to reserve grade.

“That’s footy I guess. It’s disappointing he’s leaving, I was good mates with him,” Cleary said.

“Hopefully he can fulfil that opportunity he’s been given now and play some regular footy.”

Time to end the ANZ Stadium farce

T

he atmosphere at ANZ Stadium on Wednesday night for State of Origin II was nothing short of electric, as it usually is when there’s a major event being held.

Apart from perhaps a packed Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, there is no better big-time sport feeling than the Olympic Stadium at its capacity.

But at the opposite end of the scale, there is no worse atmosphere in rugby league than a nearly empty ANZ Stadium for a club match. The embarrassment of the empty seats and the rugby league community’s desire to avoid ANZ whenever possible is proof that the NRL needs to act.

A paltry 7,000 fans turned up last Friday night to watch South Sydney do battle with the Gold Coast. There was no other major sport in Sydney to compete with and the product presented on TV left the NRL red faced.

A few weeks ago I attended Penrith’s clash with Canterbury at ANZ and I’ve never experienced a more soulless afternoon at the football. They announced a crowd of 11,000 but I’m almost certain they counted car tyres and not heads.

Those in charge at the NRL, as well as the State Government, tell us there’s no real future for suburban football. They are under some sort of weird delusion that rugby league will one day rival the AFL when it comes to crowds and therefore need to play all games out of bigger, more modern stadiums.

The truth is there’s very few rugby league fans who would rather be at ANZ Stadium than Penrith Park, Leichhardt Oval, Campbelltown Stadium or Brookvale Oval. They are the venues where we fell in love with the game, and most of us are unwilling to let them go.

But the NRL and the State Government don’t want to listen. And fans usually give up on the argument because they’re told they don’t understand the economics of match days and that clubs lose money hosting games at suburban venues.

But rather than giving up on the argument, fans should instead question how those match days can be profitable and if the NRL should be stepping in to make them so.

For some time we’ve believed the NRL when they tell us that suburban football doesn’t really have a future.

But we’re starting to learn that the incompetence of the NRL at head office means we should question every preprepared line that comes out of there.

The ANZ farce needs to stop, and stop soon. It’s damaging for the game and embarrassing for all of us who love rugby league.

T

here’s been some rough moments in Penrith’s half century history in top flight rugby league. But no matter what has happened in the past, and no matter what happens in the next 50 years, it’ll be hard to find a tougher, more sadder day than May 28, 1978.

The Panthers were facing Newtown at Henson Park and young prop John Farragher was making his seventh appearance in the top grade. Farragher had come down from country NSW to trial with Penrith in 1977 but decided to go back home to Gilgandra, before eventually winning his contract in 1978.

Club officials believed he had plenty of talent and he certainly showed what

he was made of in his first six games in Panthers colours.

But Farragher’s career would be tragically cut short on that May day, and his name would enter rugby league folklore for all the wrong reasons.

May 28, 1978 would not only be the last day Farragher would play rugby league, but the last day he would walk.

A scrum collapsed during the first half and after everyone else regained their feet, it was quickly noticed that one player remained on the ground. Farragher was motionless.

He told medics that he couldn’t feel anything – prompting a major emergency reaction on the field.

The game was held up for more than half an hour before Farragher was transported from the field.

Tests would later confirm that Farragher had broken his spinal cord and would become a quadriplegic.

The incident happened in the first half

and even in those days, news travelled quickly. By half-time, the Penrith squad was aware that it didn’t look good for Farragher – and some reports suggested they even wanted to call the game off. In those days, with rugby league far from a fully fledged professional sport, the option was most definitely considered.

However, the Panthers played on and “did it for John”, and beat the Jets comfortably.

Farragher recalls the incident in the Panthers: Men In Black book.

“I wasn’t in any agony, there was no pain or anything,” he said.

“It was a strange feeling, like a battery quickly wearing down to nothing. They put a brace around my neck and got me into the ambulance. I knew then I wouldn’t walk again and I said that to Ian Maurice in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.”

These days, Farragher – with his welcoming smile – is a mainstay at the Panthers

ince meeting at Western Sydney University in the late 80s, David Collins and Shane Dundas have mimed and mimicked their way into Australia’s physical comedy Hall of Fame.

Known to audiences as The Umbilical Brothers, the duo have also cracked the international market through sell out tours and TV appearances alongside US late night legends like Jay Leno, David Letterman, and more recently, Stephen Colbert.

Such is their popularity the pair have even found themselves the proud owners of an Emmy Award and a couple of BAFTAs. This July, the comedy stars will be bringing their most popular show ‘Speedmouse’ – which is celebrating its 15th anniversary – to the Blue Mountains Theatre in Springwood.

“No matter where we are around the world we always get ‘when are you doing ‘Speedmouse’ again?’,” David Collins, one half of the duo, said of the show.

“For some reason it is our most popular and in-demand show.”

Based on a simple yet highly engaging premise, the show acts as a platform

for the pair’s talent for mime and vocal sound effects.

“Shane and I play ourselves while somebody else has the remote control and is stuffing around with the show,” David said.

“They can stop the show, they can fast forward, they can skip the boring bits. It’s basically our show gone digital.

“It also has a ‘Sixth Sense’ style ending where people go ‘oh, right, that’s what was happening!”

While ‘Speedmouse’ may have done a fair few laps of the comedy circuit, it gets regular makeovers to keep things fresh for the audience and its performers.

That means if you’ve seen the show before, there will still be something new.

“I don’t want people to come and say ‘oh I’ve seen that show and they just did it exactly the same’,” David said.

“We’re not like one of those bands that play the song exactly the same way, we’re one of those ones that go off and do a death metal version of a jazz song.”

While the shows may have changed, the motto behind the Umbilical Brothers’ work hasn’t changed: “If we find it funny, so will others”.

“We play around with parts of the show just because we’re trying to keep ourselves on our toes and make each other laugh,” David said.

“That’s how Umbilical Brothers started.

If we’re making each other laugh then we can make an audience laugh.”

With a host of top 10 singles – including ‘Give A Little Love’, ‘Money Honey’, ‘Saturday Night’ and ‘I Only Want to Be With You’ – the Bay City Rollers are known as one of Scotland’s greatest musical exports.

Reports suggest Seven insiders are contemplating housing all the couples under one roof for their 2018 season. For many of us injuries tend to come on after being overworked throughout the winter sports season, with our bodies taking the toll for this increased exercise load and both new and niggling injuries coming into play. The next thing you know you are struggling to walk come Monday morning.

Often practitioners will have patients presenting with pain around the Achilles, being the tendon that attaches our calf muscle to our heel bone.

Sports or activities involving running and/or jumping can be the main culprits for this!

Achilles tendinopathy is a common injury usually related to overuse from an increase in activity or long periods of time on your feet.

The Achilles tendon and our calf muscles are both important in being our main propulsive mechanism for walking or running and, without the two, we wouldn’t be able to function normally.

Therefore, when there is pain or injury to the Achilles tendon, it can be very problematic for patients.

However, treatment options may include conditioning exercises, heat, footwear changes, taping, manual therapy and if foot posture is an issue, Orthotic Therapy may be implemented by your practitioner.

In short, this can be a very damaging long-term injury if it becomes ignored.

Plenty of athletes and children try to push through this condition and it normally ends up making the overall outcome worse.

If you feel pain in the area then it is advised to ice and rest it, before consulting a practitioner.

Just like humans, dogs can suffer from diabetes.

And also like humans, there are treatments available to ensure a normal life can be enjoyed...

Diabetes mellitus is a common disease in dogs and cats.

This disease is most common in animals over six years of age but younger animals can also be affected.

The pancreas is a small organ near the stomach that has two important roles – to produce enzymes necessary for good nutrition and also produce a hormone called insulin which regulates blood sugar. Diabetes occurs when the cells that produce insulin fail and blood sugar is not adequately regulated in the body.

Why is insulin so important?

Glucose is the main energy source and insulin is the key that makes glucose available for energy. Initially, dogs who do not metabolise enough sugar will have an increased appetite and increased thirst.

In the later stages, the body starts to metabolise its fat stores and this causes weight loss and makes the animal feel sick.

The early signs of diabetes are frequent urination, drinking lots of water, increased appetite and unexplained weight loss.

In the more advanced stages of the disease, animals may develop a loss of appetite, vomiting, dehydration and weakness. These more worrying signs are a result of fat metabolism in the body that produces a byproduct called ketones.

These ketones make the blood acidic and make the animal feel very ill.

How is diabetes diagnosed?

Diagnosis generally involves blood and urine testing. It is important to do this as other diseases can also cause increased appetite and thirst, and need to be ruled out.

Can diabetes be treated in pets?

Yes! Just like in humans, dietary control and daily injections of insulin can regulate diabetic dogs and cats. Insulin requirements need to be individually tailored for each animal as each has different needs. Refinements in doses are made after rechecks and most animals go on to live long and happy lives.

The initial treatment can be challenging as sometimes there are

complicating factors such as infections.

However, once these are controlled, most animals are stable and happy.

It can be daunting to learn how to inject your pet but it is easier than you think and most animals barely notice the tiny needles used to administer the important insulin.

It is important to investigate any changes in weight, appetite and thirst in your pet.

Winter is the time of year when colds and flus start to run rampant.

It’s also the time of year when we all start looking for ways to ‘boost’ our immunity, to try to avoid that cold that’s been going around the office/school/home.

While there may be plenty of products on the market that claim to do just that, one of the most effective ways to fight off the nasty germs that cause colds and flus is with a healthy diet full of whole foods.

Healthy eating alone won’t prevent colds and flus, but it is an important part of a multi-pronged approach to help reduce the likelihood and severity of colds.

The Dietitians Association of Australia recommends a focus on foods that contain vitamin C, zinc and protein, especially in vulnerable populations like the elderly, or those whose immune systems may already be compromised.

Below is a list of immunity boosting foods, along with some simple meal ideas.

Remember variety is key, so try to

include a range of whole foods – in particular fruits and vegetables – into your diet for maximum benefit.

guess many people wonder why a small wine producer such as the Hoskins family’s Brangayne would bother having two vineyards, but those who understand climate know only too well that 100m difference in elevation means the world.

That’s why Brangayne’s home vineyard, at an elevation of some 960-1000m on the higher eastern slopes of Orange’s Mt Canobolas, is planted to early ripening varieties such as chardonnay and sauvignon blanc — and why its Ynys Witrin vineyard, not that far away as the crow flies, but a hundred metres or so lower, is planted to later ripening varieties such as cabernet sauvignon and riesling. Wines of the week Brangayne 2016 Sauvignon Blanc ($22) I reckon that this dry white, made 100 per cent from Brangayne’s home vineyard, shows exactly why I regard sauvignon blanc from Orange so highly.

It has plenty of herbaceous, tropical-fruit aromas but it also has genuine depth of palate flavour and easily passes the second-glass test. Much better than many unsatisfying, overcropped sauvignons from Marborough.

Brangayne 2014 Tristan ($35) A dry red blended from cabernet sauvignon, merlot and shiraz grown on the warmer Ynys Witrin vineyard.

The grapes probably wouldn’t have ripened adequately a hundred or so metres higher up, but here they deliver a wine with distinctive leafy cabernet aromas but an ample, generous palate.

A flavoursome, attractive medium-bodied, excellent food wine — good stuff.

Physie’s proud history on show this weekend The Nepean Valley Zone will be sending 158 girls to perform this Saturday at the BJP 125 Year Spectacular NATHAN TAYLOR

whopping 158 girls from the Nepean Valley Zone will perform at Qudos Bank Arena this Saturday, to celebrate 125 years since Physical Culture’s inception in Australia.

The Nepean Valley women will join 2000 performers to showcase their unique sport for the BJP 125 Year Spectacular tomorrow, June 24.

Physical Culture – or Physie as it’s affectionately known – has certainly stood the test of time in this country. The sport was set up before Australia was federated and

even before the Australian Navy existed.

Physie’s motto is ‘empowering girls for life’ and is a fusion of dance and sport for girls and women aged between three and 73.

Managing Director of Physical Culture, Jackie Rawlings, said she’s incredibly proud of the work that thousands of volunteers have put in over 125 years to create such an important legacy for our country, however, she’s increasingly concerned about the pressures young women are under.

“Physie aims to empower girls and we do that in a number of ways,” she said “We prioritise the development of selfesteem in our students. We teach them

to have a positive relationship with their bodies and help students blossom with confidence and self-assurance.”

The sport’s origins date back to 1892 in Hobart when a Danish man from an athletic family decided to teach Australians what Scandinavians were doing to stay fit in mind and body.

Through the decades the activity has touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of Australian families and has evolved to incorporate yoga moves, contemporary movement and a focus on girls and women, where initially it was a mixed sport.

Physie continues to grow and, in the

last five years, the number of clubs has increased by 30 per cent.

“The reason we think Physie has withstood the test of time is the supportive and nurturing community and the fact that generations of women can participate and compete together,” Rawlings said.

“It is not uncommon for grandmothers, mothers, daughters and granddaughters to be members of the same club and share their involvement.”

Local clubs representing the Nepean Valley Zone at this weekend’s BJP 125 Year Spectacular include Penrith, Nepean, St Clair and Glenbrook.

Meet The President

Forever building, Emus hope the future Rugby union faces many challenges in Penrith but President Jeff Fox believes the right ingredients are NATHAN TAYLOR

The Weekender’s Meet The President series introduces you to the people in charge of our local sporting clubs. This week, we chat with Penrith Emus Rugby Club President Jeff Fox...

How long have you been the President of the Penrith Emus Rugby Club for?

This is my first season as President.

How long have you been involved with rugby and what were your previous roles?

I became involved with rugby, initially via school teams, and came to the Penrith Emus in 1982 as a player. I stayed with the club for three years before doing other things, however always maintained an interest in the game.

I returned to the club in 2011 when I commenced on the Board. One of the things that struck me was that we, as a club, didn’t have any juniors. We relied heavily on imported players and we found that the better players were quickly scouted by our competitor clubs and, as there was no emotional connection to the club, they would leave. So I, along with several like-minded people,

formed Penrith Junior District Rugby (a representative entity only), to give young local players from our junior feeder clubs a pathway up into Premier Rugby.

I held the Junior President’s position for the first few years up until last year when I stepped aside to take on the role as senior Club President.

Explain what your role entails?

We have a board structure at the club.

As President I am a leader of this group, however we also have a football operations component of the club.

I have some great people around me both at Board level and operationally, so I see my role as overseeing everything, without necessarily having to make all the decisions. On the Board we are endeavouring to look at the club’s strategic direction, with a focus on being a community-minded club, whereas our football operations component is responsible for week to week match preparation.

Tell me about your rugby background, how did you fall in love with the sport?

I was born in Penrith and, like a lot of kids in western Sydney during the 70s, you either played soccer or rugby league – well I played rugby league.

PH:

Whilst at high school we had a teacher who was an accomplished rugby union player, who invited several of us to trial for a Sydney West rugby union representative team. I made the team (my first ever game of rugby) and really enjoyed the experience. I maintained a place in this team during the last three years of school and decided that I enjoyed the game, so I made the switch from league.

What are some of the challenges/issues facing rugby locally?

One of our goals when we formed the Junior District was to grow the game in the area. It was people from our group who took up the challenge and started Penrith RSL Junior Rugby Club. We also have junior feeder clubs in the Hawkesbury, Blue Mountains, Mount Druitt and Campbelltown.

I recently went to a forum organised by Penrith Council regarding their long term strategic direction for sport and I believe a common challenge that emerged for all codes was the need for additional playing fields. We currently share our home ground with the RSL Juniors and this is restricting growth of that club and ours.

They need their own facility.

We are always looking for people to join

the club and get involved in a wide range of activities and tasks that need to be undertaken. A recent review of the NSW Waratahs showed that over half of the squad was from western Sydney. Unfortunately many great local players have been choosing to travel outside of the area to play with those more traditionally stronger clubs. We need to arrest this issue and show them that playing at the Penrith Emus will create the desired pathway.

If you could improve one area of your sport on a local level, what would it be?

Historically Penrith Rugby Club has fielded women’s teams. For various reasons this hasn’t happened over the past few years. We really need to change this to keep in step with community values and expectations. I believe we certainly need additional volunteers and field space to really support a women’s program, considering it is definitely a growth area for sport, particularly since the inclusion of women’s Rugby 7’s at the Olympics.

Are you happy with the amount of Government funding your club receives or could you do with more financial help?

We recently received a grant from the NSW Office of Sport as organised by a

is full of positivity coming together to ensure the sport’s growth supporter of ours, local MP Stuart Ayres. I guess all clubs would say they need additional grant money, however we have also recently been advised of a generous grant from Penrith Council for some capital works at the club, plus other regular grant money we receive from the Council.

Penrith Mayor John Thain, another great supporter, hosted our season launch this year via a Civic Reception, which was a terrific way to start.

Clubs need to take advantage of the grants that are out there. I guess the challenge is finding someone who has both the time and expertise to put together the grant applications, some of which can involve quite a demanding process.

There are plenty of success stories about rugby in the Weekender, what is the one thing you are most proud of?

For me it’s the formation of the Junior District. We draw players from our feeder junior clubs each year and they play in their respective age groups as part of the NSW State Championship tournament in ages from U10’s through to U17’s.

Although we have only been going for five seasons now, we already have three State titles under our belt – our last when this year’s U13’s took the champions

trophy. Considering we are competing against other districts, who are from rugby heartlands, it is proof there is a huge future for rugby in outer western Sydney.

How many registered members does the Penrith Emus Rugby Club currently have and how do you plan to grow the game?

This year we have three senior teams, three Colts teams plus an U18’s team, who are currently running second in their competition. Including all of our junior representative teams, plus our Over 35’s team, there are a significant number of people associated with the club.

I believe the real growth potential for us is with girls and women’s teams. We will need the support of the community to get this up and running.

Looking into your crystal ball, where do you see rugby locally in five years’ time?

I believe when clubs like Sydney University, Eastwood and Randwick travel out to Nepean Rugby Park, it will be a long trip home after being given a lesson in how to play rugby. I envisage that we will have a large supporter base that will be right behind the club.

I also see growth in junior numbers and healthy women’s and girls competitions.

Wide Web of Sports: Online chat show talks to the world

St Clair Hawks snatch $6000 grant for all-weather marquees

lmost any local sports fan will tell you that a freezing night in June is made instantly better by the array of winter sports on offer.

At venues all around town, dozens of television screens bring the world’s sport to the community. But at the Lapstone Hotel tonight, June 23, two local sport fanatics will bring our community’s sport to the world.

Jono Lees and Matt Poynting will kick off the first show of ‘The Sporting Chance Winter Series’, webcast live from the Lapstone Hotel at 6pm.

Lees said the series follows a format that has proven popular so far.

“The winter series comes on the back of the success of our summer edition in January this year, which was seen not just here in Australia but in over five countries,” he said.

The show’s transition from community radio to webcasting, through Newcastlebased company BLive Streaming, saw the team cover the inaugural Blue Mountains and Greater West Rugby Sevens tournament earlier this year, an experience Poynting said was a dream come true.

“It was an incredible experience and a very well-organised event,” he said.

The pair, who first began ‘The Sporting Chance’ live stream in 2016, said the show offers an alternative voice to community sport in Penrith and the Blue Mountains.

ain won’t be a huge issue for the St Clair Hawks Cricket Club any longer after they received a $6000 grant to fund the purchase of all-weather marquees.

Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies congratulated the local club on receiving the grant from the State Government.

“The very essence of the Community Building Partnership Program is to support projects that encourage growth and development in our community,” Ms Davies said.

Ms Davies was joined by St Clair Hawks President Natalie Bradbury and Coaching Coordinator Jarred Hodges at St Marys recently for the cheque presentation.

The $6000 grant will be used by the club to purchase two customised marquees, to be used at club and community events for weather protection, preventing such occasions from being called off.

“As many of the local sporting organisations are run by volunteers from the community, I look forward to seeing this grant make a real impact not only for the St Clair Hawks but the Mulgoa community also,” Ms Davies said.

Around the grounds RUGBY: Despite leading at half-time, the Penrith Emus have gone down to Northern Suburbs 57-14 in Round 11 of the Shute Shield competition.

This Saturday afternoon the Emus will travel to Pittwater Rugby Park to battle Warringah.

AUSSIE RULES: The Penrith Rams have now won four straight games, defeating the Manly Warringah Wolves 81-42 in Round 10 of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition.

Mitchell Stevens top scored with six goals for the Rams. Penrith will take on the South West Sydney Magpies this Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Auburn-Penrith Giants have won back to back games, defeating the Newtown Breakaways 70-22 in Round 10 of the AFL Sydney Premier Women’s Division competition.

Melissa Brydon kicked four goals for the Giants. The Giants will battle the Sydney University Bombers this Saturday.

AFL: After enjoying last weekend off, the second-placed GWS Giants will return to the field this Saturday when they take on the Brisbane Lions. The Giants will be hoping to bounce back after their previous game against Carlton saw them go down by just one point.

NETBALL: The Panthers Opens team remain winless after four rounds, going down to the UTS St George Sparks 50-44 in Round 4 of

the Netball NSW Premier League competition. Meanwhile, the Panthers Under 20’s have suffered their first loss of the year, defeated by the Sparks 49-43. Both teams will take on the GWS Fury in Round 5.

NETBALL: Giants Netball put up a brave fight but ultimately went down to the Sunshine Coast Lightning in the inaugural Super Netball Grand Final last weekend. The Giants led after the first quarter but weren’t able to keep up the pace against the red-hot Lightning, who prevailed 65-48 in front of thousands of fans at Brisbane Entertainment Centre.

“I think we will learn a lot from this game tonight. This is our first year as a club and I am very proud of what we have created this season and looking forward to next year,” Giants coach Julie Fitzgerald said.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers have endured a tough weekend at the office, going down in both games during Round 14 of the Division 1 Youth League Men’s competition.

Penrith were defeated by the Blacktown Storm 86-74 on Saturday before losing a nail biter against Manly 92-91 the following day.

Meanwhile, Penrith’s Division 1 Youth League Women’s team had a far better weekend, defeating the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles 67-49.

ive players from Penrith City Softball Association have been selected to represent NSW at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide this December.

Christopher Rutherford, Lachlan Iredale, Matthew Beach and James Cheung will play for the NSW All Schools Softball boys team while Shaylan Whatman will turn out for the NSW All Schools Softball girls team.

The talented bunch are also members of the Western Sydney Academy of Sport (WSAS) – Softball Squad Program, for elite athletes.

Speaking with the Weekender, 16-year-old Caroline Chisholm College student Shaylan Whatman said she’s very excited to represent her state at the prestigious end of year tournament for the second time.

“I took part in the Pacific School Games back in 2015 and we ended up winning,” she said.

“It’s a great tournament to be a part of and the fields over in Adelaide are really nice.”

The Pacific School Games, run by School Sport Australia, features 4000 school-aged students competing across 11 different sports.

The athletes hail from at least 15 countries, including every Australian state and territory.
