Council takes a stand Circuses with exotic animals banned from Council owned land DALE DRINKWATER

ircuses with exotic animals have been banned from operating on Penrith City Council land in an historic move. Council this week voted to adopt their first circus policy, driven by Councillor Michelle Tormey, to exclude the use of Council land for the operation of circuses with such animals. However, it won’t stop circuses from operating on private land, with the Stardust Circus scheduled to begin this weekend at Penrith Paceway to go ahead as planned. Councillor Tormey said it’s not about stopping circuses from coming to town, but for Council to take a stand. “Children need to learn that it’s not OK to exploit wild animals for entertainment,” she said. “This Council can take an ethical position, as we know over the years Council has received a number of complaints and submissions.” Regulation for circuses is currently at the State Government level, in the hands of the Department of Primary Industries and the RSCPA. Upon Cr Tormey’s requests, Council agreed to adopt the new policy, and to write to the Minister for Primary Industries, Niall Blair, to advocate an amendment to current NSW Government standards. Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler was one of six who voted against Cr Tormey’s amendments, along with Marcus Cornish, Tricia Hitchen, Ben Goldfinch, Jim Aitken and Maurice Girotto.

Local school bucks a worrying trend Male teachers are hard to find at most primary schools but Penrith Anglican College defies the statistics
en are severely underrepresented when it comes to teacher numbers in our classrooms, but Penrith Anglican College is bucking the trend. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the number of male teachers across the country has been progressively declining with the percentage of male primary school teachers in western Sydney schools sitting at just 15.9 per cent in 2014. But at Penrith Anglican College, male teachers make up 40 per cent of the teaching staff between Year 2 and Year 6, with at least one male teacher in every year across these years. Year 3 teacher at Penrith Anglican College, Luke Przydacz, said it’s important to have male teachers in the classroom. “Having positive male role models as teachers and being intricately involved in the education of young children is extremely important,” he said. “Male teachers bring a different dynamic to teaching; they are able to connect with students, interact with them and mentor them in a different way.”
M
Mr Przydacz said it’s disappointing that the trend at Penrith Anglican College isn’t being replicated elsewhere. “It’s a little disheartening to know the number of male teachers is declining because they have so much to offer in the education, growth and development of young children,” Mr Przydacz said. “I think it’s important for young children, boys and girls, to experience men engaging and guiding them in their learning and to see males valuing education themselves.” 84.1 per cent of the teaching staff in western Sydney primary schools are female. Penrith Public School has just three male teachers across 18 classes, while St Mary MacKillop Primary School has just four male teachers, including the principal and deputy principal, out of 30. Kingswood Park Public School has two permanent male teachers and one casual male teacher across kindergarten to Year 6 and the preschool. “It’s important for students to experience direct care and concern for them from someone outside their immediate family and also for them to witness positive and professional interactions between male and female teachers,” Mr Przydacz said.

he world got a reminder of just how important quality journalism is when ‘Spotlight’ won Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards a few weeks ago. The movie, about the Boston Globe’s award-winning investigation into the systematic abuse of children by Roman Catholic priests, is a brilliant insight into an industry that remains vitally important to our everyday lives. When I saw the flick with a fellow media friend of mine, we both sat at dinner afterwards questioning whether such an intense, important investigation would ever take place by the print media here in Australia in 2016. We’ve both watched as the industry we both love is so regularly torn apart by budget cuts that have forced newsrooms to dwindle in size over the last decade. There are obvious exceptions to the rule and I’m proud to say that here at the Weekender we continue to defy the industry trend and in fact a new journalist joined our team just this week in a newly created position. But over at Fairfax Media, the story is grim. Last week, the company announced it planned to cut 120 fulltime equivalent roles in its newsrooms in Sydney and Melbourne. Some would find it hard to believe Fairfax still has 120 editorial jobs given the enormity of cuts in recent years. Both Fairfax and News Limited face a significant issue in that the print editions of the Sydney Morning Herald and The Daily Telegraph cost an extraordinary amount of money to produce, and the ‘rivers of gold’ that once existed, being the classifieds, barely exist in 2016.

“The only thing that happens when you cut journalists is a reduction in the quality of content you are producing”
But the answer should never be cutting the very people that play the key role in ensuring people pick up the paper, or jump onto a news website. The people that could and will determine how successful the future is given they’ll be creating the content. Over at Fairfax, journalists have tried their very best to produce quality, independent content for the Sydney Morning Herald and other publications in recent years despite constant budget cuts. They have helped drive the transformation to digital, while paying respects to the print edition that still has a very strong following. And the thanks they get? More cuts to the newsroom. Another punch in the face to their profession. It is quite obvious that the quality of the Sydney Morning Herald has suffered in recent years as a result of the past staff cuts.
News.............................................1-29 Business.................................30-31 History ............................................32
The only thing that happens when you cut journalists is a reduction in the quality of the content you are producing. Investigative pieces become few and far between. Mistakes become more common. Vital stories are missed simply because the resources don’t exist to chase them as they once did. In short, the end reader suffers considerably. If anything, the transformation of mainstream national and statewide news to digital should require more journalists, not less. It should require more people writing more stories to satisfy the demands of readers. I can assure you that other publishers, including ours, take no pleasure in seeing the fall of once-great institutions like Fairfax. For the nation to have a strong media, a vocal media and one that gets results for readers, it needs to be full of healthy competition. Unfortunately it’s not just print that is suffering – we saw the very sad merger between the 2GB and 2UE newsrooms last year, which ended decades of tradition and saw the once great 2UE newsroom closed down. Journalism in Australia will not die because Fairfax Media disappears from the media landscape (if that’s what happens down the track), but any loss of quality journalists is a significant hit to the industry. These days, members of the public often say that they don’t trust, or like, the media. To any journalist, that’s both sad and just a little offensive. But you can start to understand where they’re coming from when you watch the industry torn apart and quality journalists all but thrown on the scrapheap.

Eggstra special celebration for Easter
Tanya Davies Member for Mulgoa
Too cute! Kids at Emu Heights Public School have a blast at Easter event DALE DRINKWATER
xtravagant is an understatement, as Emu Heights Public School celebrated Easter a little differently with their Easter Extravaganza. Every class from Kindergarten to Year 6 dressed up and enjoyed the festivities without making an Easter hat for the typical ‘Easter hat parade’. Instead, Kindergarten to Year 2 made a creative contraption with anything they could find that had wheels. From toy trucks and prams, to scooters and wheelbarrows, the tiniest pupils pushed around colourful creations decorated with Easter eggs and bunnies. The older primary students from Years 3 to 6 brought something from home to sell, to raise money for their performing arts and extra curricular groups. Pet rocks were a highlight for sale in the stalls at the Peddlers Parade, among lucky bags, mystery eggs, nail polish, juggling balls, and not to mention the all time favourite cupcakes, cookies and ‘frogs in a pond’. Assistant Principal, Kerri Rooney, said the school raised a massive $3005.60, which included funds from a raffle. “We use that money to fund resources so we can buy dance costumes and that

South Penrith: Off-duty officer spotted drunk man in car
Penrith: Man to front court after drink driving incident
A man was caught by an off-duty police officer on the weekend when he got behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol. The 58-year-old man was arrested on Friday, March 18, after he was witnessed by an off-duty police officer getting into his vehicle just after 7pm. Initially the pair had a talk next to the man’s parked car at a hotel in South Penrith, with the man proceeding to get into his car. Police were called and the man was subjected to a road side breath test, returning a positive result. He was taken back to Penrith Police Station, given a breath analysis and was charged for a high range PCA offence. He is due in Penrith Local Court on April 8.
A man was charged with a mid range PCA offence while driving on a disqualified license. At about 3.50am on Saturday, March 19, a 35-year-old man, from Doonside, was driving a Ford Focus along Coreen Avenue in Penrith when police were alerted to his matter of driving. He was stopped and subjected to a random road side breath test which returned a positive result. After being subjected to a breath test at Penrith Police Station, he was arrested and charged with ‘drive mid range’ and ‘drive during disqualification’. He is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on April 11.
Penrith: Two women busted taking items from shop
Penrith: Woman attacks man with glass
Several people have been caught over the last week shoplifting, with two incidents occurring at the same supermarket on Station Street in Penrith. At about 5pm on Thursday, March 17, police were called to the premises after a 43-year-old woman from Penrith was allegedly caught taking a number of items without paying for them. She was dealt with by way of a criminal infringement notice. At about 5.55pm on the same day, a 54-year-old woman from Cambridge Gardens was also allegedly caught taking a number of items from the store and was also handed a criminal infringement notice.
A man was allegedly attacked with a glass at a licensed premises on Mugloa Road on Saturday night. The victim, a 28-year-old man, was allegedly minding his own business with a group of friends when he was approached by a 24-year-old woman, from Jamisontown. The pair had a heated argument which ended in her allegedly picking up a glass and hitting him on the head with it. He suffered a laceration to the face which required stitches. She was arrested and charged with ‘reckless wounding’ and is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on April 11 to answer to the charges.

Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott, has played down claims the Federal Government is looking into a study for a national road pricing scheme. A national road pricing scheme was put forward by Infrastructure Australia in the Australian Infrastructure Plan last month, recommending a full user-pays model for all roads and all users. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown raised
concerns over the effect on western Sydney motorists if they were to be charged for roads based on how far they travel and when. “Yes, there needs to be less cars on the road but to achieve this we need a high-frequency, interconnected public transport system which services the areas where there is greatest growth and potential,” she said.

Not all happy with new policy Story continued from » p. 1 Cr Fowler said it’s another example of political correctness that Penrith doesn’t need. “To deprive a couple of kids to go to a local venue that is relatively cheap and see these animals is detrimental,” he said. Councillor Girotto said the only thing this is going to achieve is losing Council money, and it’s the Greens community who are jumping up and down, no one else. Circuses can still operate on private land, as in the case of the Stardust Circus running between Friday, March 25 to Sunday, April 3 at the Penrith Paceway. Adam St James, Ringmaster of Stardust Circus is furious the circus industry was not consulted before the decision was made by Penrith Council. “This was all rushed through – they didn’t consult the industry it was going to affect first,” he said. “Everyone is entitled to their opinion but the industry is incredibly angry, and we will certainly look at taking it further.” He said Stardust Circus abides closely to the standards set by the Department of Primary Industries. “We have a very strict code in Australia when it comes to keeping of circus animals, probably the best in the world,” he said. “We are inspected regularly, we are a law abiding family business, we have never been fined for animal cruelty ever.” Animal activists and Animal Liberation NSW are planning to hold a protest against the Stardust Circus at Penrith Paceway this Saturday, March 26 from 3pm. Animal Liberation NSW’s Youth Engagement Coordinator Phillip Hall said a statewide ban on performing animals in circuses is the only answer. “While we have animals born into captivity in circuses like Stardust and the Lennon Bros, perpetually denied their natural behaviours, the fragility of their psychological state is in constant question,” he said. “Allowing this to continue on private land goes against the wants of councils who have clearly objected.” What’s your view? Billions needed to meet our needs Penrith City Council hits the pavement to drum up support for Fund Our Future campaign DALE DRINKWATER
ouncil’s big players have stepped out bright and early to round up Penrith commuters to support a funding campaign, that aims to bring more rail links to western Sydney. Mayor Karen McKeown and Assistant General Manager Craig Butler intercepted commuters on the south side, and Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler held the fort on the north side of Penrith Station on Wednesday morning. They were out in force in support of the National Growth Areas Alliance’s (NGAA) Fund Our Future campaign, that calls on a national dedicated infrastructure fund. The campaign suggests that $5 billion every year for 15 years is needed to provide fast-growing outer suburbs like Penrith sufficient roads, public transport and health facilities. Teacher at Nepean Christian School, Nathan Zamprogno, was waiting for Year 11 students to commute to Parliament House for an excursion, and questioned the chance of securing such funding. “Let me get this straight, you’re asking for $75 billion over five Federal terms?” he asked Council officers.
C
Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown speaks to a commuter at Penrith Station yesterday
“It’s certainly ambitious, that kind of money is not loose change. I’m not questioning the necessity of such funding, but I’m not sure the way you’re going to secure $75 billion is by handing out flyers at a train station.” But Penrith Council is up for the challenge, as it means game-changing projects like a new rail link connecting western Sydney’s south and north could be backed. Penrith’s own Deputy Mayor, Ross Fowler, is the NSW spokesperson for the NGAA and said the proposed link would service the future western Sydney airport at Badgerys Creek. “Sydney’s trains have traditionally operated on the ‘spokes and hubs’ approach into the city,” he said. “That means anyone who needs to get anywhere other than the east has to do so by car, sitting on crowded roads or using a combination of public transport routes. “Unfortunately, that has often been western Sydney residents, many of whom spend an hour in the car getting to work, even if their job is in the region, because their transport options are so limited.” Council believes a north-south rail link would ease traffic congestion on roads and make commutes faster and more efficient for tens of thousands of people.

eaders from diverse and contrasting religious communities have set an example, by coming together in a show of peaceful unity. A roundtable discussion was held at the Western Sydney University (WSU) Kingswood Campus last Friday, as part of the university’s Challenging Racism project. The meeting was to bring to the table any religious issues between races and discuss peaceful initiatives to address them. Russell Davies of the St Andrews Uniting Church told Muslim leaders of his disappointment from certain Penrith Councillors against building a prayer hall in Kemps Creek. “I’m offended to see some of our elected local Councillors telling lies and misrepresenting facts about the building of a prayer hall in Kemps Creek. There are dangers of intolerance,” he said. Robin Margo, former President of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, said there still needs to be real efforts made between religions to come together. “People are looking for more than just people of different faiths getting together and talking about their religions, they

Professor Kevin Dunn, Mayor Karen McKeown and Western Sydney religious leaders from the Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Muslim and Jewish faiths want to actually get some action and ideas on how to take things forward,” he said. “We need to build relationships, and that means much more concerted efforts to meet more regularly, and to meet in different ways, and that can become a power base for social organisation.” The Challenging Racism project is headed by WSU’s Professor Kevin Dunn,
who started it in response to Pauline Hanson’s One Nation political party. “I was struck by some arguments that the One Nation party was a ‘rural’ group from the bush. I wanted to have a look at attitudes by city and country, so I started running a geography of racism project,” he said. Evolving from this, Challenging
Racism’s Virginia Mapedzahama, said they now run about 15 projects that look at anti-racism and bystander anti-racism. “We are looking at the role religion can play in maintaining harmony, and we are hoping that religious leaders can come together and pinpoint the issues that are happening in the communities,” Ms Mapedzahama said.

You’re never too old to Re-Imagine Ageing. Council’s Re-imagine Ageing initiative is a two year project providing opportunities for the active ageing community (over 55s) to remain active – socially, mentally and physically. The 2016 NSW Seniors Festival will run from Friday, April 1 to Sunday, April 10. As the festival now runs for longer than a week, its name has been changed from NSW Seniors Week to NSW Seniors Festival. Penrith’s theme for the celebration is Re-Imagine Ageing and boasts a program of more than 75 events during 10 days with something new for everyone to try. Our communities are ageing and remaining healthier for longer. Age is not the barrier it used to be – we can always have fun, learn new skills and stay connected with our family, friends and neighbours. Restaurants set to flaunt their score Consumers will have better knowledge of health and safety results thanks to Scores on Doors concept is a great marketing tool which will help increase repeat business,” he said. Businesses can be marked with up to three ‘demerit points’ in their health and safety inspection and still receive a five star rating. The loss of four to eight points will still get a business a four star rating, and losing nine to 15 points will result in a three star rating. Anything over that does not provide the opportunity to display results through the program. The NSW Food Authority’s Local Government Unit Manager Ben Lees said the voluntary program is about recognising good performers. “It’s free to the business and most people can put up their poster or put it in the drawer,” he said. “But it’s not open to businesses who fail their inspection – we have a name and shame list for that.” Most Penrith Councillors voted in favour of the program at a recent meeting, excluding Councillor Marcus Cornish who said Council’s existing food safety program is already working. Councillor Cornish said the money could be used better inspecting the health and safety of other businesses.

ocals and tourists will soon know the cleanliness of local restaurants before they step inside – through a star rating displayed on their doors. The Scores on Doors program by the NSW Food Authority and Penrith Council will enable local businesses to flaunt the results of their last health, hygiene and food safety inspection. While some businesses were not so keen on the idea, Mustafa Gazi, owner of Cafe Lattetude in Jamisontown, said he thinks the program will benefit consumers and businesses doing the right thing. “Many consumers are very conscious as to how their food has been stored and prepared,” he said. “I think it’s a great idea as patrons are assured when they walk through the doors and feel confident they are dining at a venue with a high Food Authority star rating.” He said it will provide better promotion for local businesses, and Cafe Lattetude will absolutely participate in the program. “I believe we will receive a very high rating like we normally do, and to be able to show a high rating on your door

If there was ever an example of somebody who is very different in Opposition than they are in Government, it is Health Minister Jillian Skinner. She was a very decent Opposition Health Minister, and I always felt she would do a tremendous job when the Liberal Government came to power. I now feel very let down, as our hospitals continue to struggle (Nepean at breaking point, March 17). As we watch the State Government pour funds into things like useless stadiums, you have to wonder what happens to our health system in the future. Our hospitals need money, and they need it desperately. STEVE WILLOUGHBY, CRANEBROOK

So far he hasn’t shown any remorse for his actions or apologised to the victim’s families (it’s been two and a half years since the accident). Intersections to be overhauled Erskine Park and St Clair the big winners in $35 million funding package
Small shocks can lead to bigger issues JADE ALIPRANDI
f you’ve felt a tingle from a tap or a shock from an electrical appliance, you may have a significant electrical problem in your home. Endeavour Energy is warning homeowners about potential early warning signs of an electrical problem within the home if you’ve come across even the smallest fault. Endeavour Energy’s General Manager of Safety, Andrew Pitman, said people need to be aware of the smaller problems. “Anyone who has flickering lights, tingly taps or receives a shock from either a fixed or portable electrical appliance should call us on 131 003 as soon as possible,” he said. “These can be bigger problems and need to be checked by a qualified electrician.” Mr Pitman said these issues need to be reported so the source of the problem could be found and repaired. “While you can’t see electricity, it travels easily through metal, timber, water and even people,” he said. “If there are problems with the neutral circuit or earth connection in your home, water pipes, stoves, metal taps and other household items that can conduct electricity become live.” It’s recommended customers undertake regular safety checks to make sure they did not take unnecessary risks with electricity. “Electricity is an essential part of modern life and homes are filled with electrical appliances,” Mr Pitman said. Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies with happy residents on the corner of Erskine Park Road and Explorers Way DALE DRINKWATER
rskine Park and St Clair residents are among the thousands who will get to use new and improved intersections on their way to and from work, school and recreation. Penrith Council has accepted over $35 million in funding from the State and Federal Governments to upgrade seven local intersections over the next three financial years. Between Erskine Park and St Clair, four intersections between the traffic-heavy Bennett Road and Explorers Way will be upgraded, a $29.1 million project Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies said is completely necessary. “St Clair and Erskine Park residents have raised with me the difficulties that
E
they are confronted with when trying to access Erskine Park Road, especially during peak hour times,” she said. “Such issues have centred on significant time delays and unnecessary risks for commuters to just get on the road in the first place.” Ms Davies said the upgrades will provide for new channelisation of intersections and the widening of Erskine Park Road from two lanes to four, between Bennett Road and Coonawarra Drive, to match the existing four-lane configuration. “Perhaps the most notable of these upgrades is the installation of traffic lights at the Bennett Road and Explorers Way intersections at Erskine Park Road, which will undoubtedly provide substantial benefits to commuters and residents in the area, enhancing their safety and minimising delays,” she said.

The remaining $6.6 million of funding will go towards upgrading two intersections on The Northern Road, such as the busy intersections at Derby Street and the Great Western Highway in addition to a roundabout at the intersection of Bringelly Road and Caddens Road. Councillor Greg Davies was delighted to accept the total $35,763,469 for the seven local intersections at a Council meeting on Monday night. “It’s a good start and I can assure people there are a lot of residents in Erskine Park and St Clair who will be happy,” he said. The funding is part of the second round of the $200 million Local Roads Package, within the Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan through RMS. Council is responsible for the management of the project including the initial tender process and awarding of contracts.

Banks launch trial to assist deaf and hard of hearing customers
Sculptural seating areas to be installed along Great River Walk DALE DRINKWATER
he famous Great River Walk along the Nepean River is about to get even better for its thousands of weekly walkers and runners. After the community responded to Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott’s ‘The Biggest Survey’ launched in August last year, the lack of recreational facilities along the river was listed as a concern by many residents. In response, the Federal Government and Penrith City Council will be installing five sculptural seating areas, further enhancing the Nepean River as a natural icon of the west. Ms Scott said this is just one of many things that can be done to ensure the future environmental, economic and social value of the river in the community. “The Nepean River has such a rich history within our electorate,” she said. “For our first settlers it was a meeting point with people like Yarramundi and a popular swimming destination in the first half of the 20th century.” Now its popularity can be protected, with the installation of five seating sculptures. “These installations are designed to blend in with the natural environment with elements of sandstone and copper

Westpac Chief Operating Officer, John Arthur, said the trial is part and parcel of making banking easier, simpler and more convenient for all their customers. “The trial is an important step to help break down the communication barriers experienced by many of our deaf and hard of hearing customers, and we’re proud to be the first financial institution to offer it to customers,” he said. The service is free and will run in Penrith for the next five weeks in Westpac and St George branches.

Emu Plains family hopes people talk about Epilepsy on Saturday JADE ALIPRANDI
If I had a seizure, what would you do?” That’s the question being asked by Emu Plains mum Annmaree Barnes ahead of Purple Day, this Saturday, March 26. Purple Day is the biggest annual fundraiser for Epilepsy Action Australia, spreading awareness about Epilepsy and also raising vital funds for research. Ms Barnes’ 17-year-old son Mitchell was diagnosed with Epilepsy just two years ago after his second seizure. Mitchell has Tonic-clonic seizures where he drops to the floor and his whole body seizes and spasms, averaging one seizure almost every six weeks. “We’re quite lucky with his condition as other people have seizures more regularly but it’s pretty scary to watch him go through that,” Ms Barnes said. “It came out of nowhere and affects the whole family but we manage.” Ms Barnes and the family are set on the message they want to send to people by wearing t-shirts with the question, ‘If I had a seizure, what would you do?’. “It’s really important that people know what to do when someone has a seizure, which is what we are trying to help people understand,” Ms Barnes said. “There are a lot of other ribbons out

he prestigious Fernhill legacy has been honoured through Glenmore Park’s newest special needs school. The Fernhill School in Ridgetop Drive is due for completion in Term 1, 2017, to accommodate up to 160 students with special needs. On Wednesday, Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli met with Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies to announce the historical name of the $16.1 million development. It’s one of 26 new or upgraded specific
T
purpose schools across the state, that will accommodate Kindergarten to Year 12 students in seven state-of-the-art buildings. Facilities will include special education classrooms, interactive learning spaces, outdoor learning areas, a multi-purpose hall and a hydrotherapy pool. NSW Public Schools Director, Christine Tasker, said the hydrotherapy pool and multi-purpose hall can also be used by the wider community outside of school hours. “The pool will be used by the school during school hours, but after school it can be hired out for swimming classes,” she said.
COUNCIL SNAPSHOT To add to the already upgraded Barr and Bass Street reserve at Colyton, Penrith Council has made a funding application for a showpiece garden. The $5000 request was made to the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Program, and Council has supported a decision to match the $5000 of funding from their own capital budget. Council made the submission on behalf of Team Colyton, who have a vision to bring more life and colour to the space. The space was recently upgraded and designed by local students through Penrith Council’s Mayoral Challenge, and will be officially opened on April 1. It could soon be a little harder to access Nepean Village from Woodriff Street, Penrith. Councillor Bernard Bratusa requested that Council’s Local Traffic Committee have a look at extending the median strip on Woodriff Street to prohibit southbound cars turning right into Nepean Village. He also said the location is too dangerous for two lots of traffic exiting both Nepean Village and The Reject Shop at the same time, and for both to turn across two lanes. WW21856

Ms Barnes said the most important thing to do when someone has a seizure is to not touch them and let them go but to keep talking to them so they know you’re there. As part of Purple Day, Michel’s Patisserie in St Clair will be selling merchandise from Epilepsy Action Australia.

Management Studies. One of the two studies to be undertaken is a Penrith CBD study and plan, and the second is at Byrnes Creek in St Marys. Penrith Council will be contributing another $100,000 to the project, that Councillor Marcus Cornish is delighted about. “This is identifying problems that we are extremely prone to in the Penrith area,” he said. “We haven’t had that ‘one in 100 years’ flood for a long time, since 1867,” he added. The studies must be completed by December 31, 2018. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown and Councillor Tricia Hitchen have been nominated by Penrith Councillors to attend the next National General Assembly of Local Government. The 2016 Assembly will be held in Canberra from June 19 to 22 and will feature presentations from key political leaders and other guest speakers. For this year’s program, the Australian Local Government Association has sent invitations to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Microsoft’s Managing Director Pip Marlow, Leader of the Opposition Bill Shorten, senators, leader of the Greens, and other high profile politicians. This year’s theme for motions from Council is “Partners in an Innovative and Prosperous Future”.

lenmore Park resident Shirley Jenkins has won one of the most prestigious awards on offer at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show. Specialising in arts and crafts, Ms Jenkins won the Frances Binnie Memorial Perpetual Trophy last week for her efforts with her embroidered Christening gown. Ms Jenkins said she wasn’t expecting to get such a big award. “I felt really overwhelmed – it’s one of the highest awards you can receive at the Show, so it’s pretty special to me,” she said. Having spent almost three years on and off creating the gown, Ms Jenkins was awarded for the Most Meritorious Exhibit in the Standard of Excellence Showcase.
G
“This piece took quite a while to do and I put a lot of effort into it,” Ms Jenkins said. Ms Jenkins has won three other awards at the Easter Show in recent years, dabbling in a range of creative activities including patchwork, crochet, knitting and card making. Having continued with family tradition after her grandmother and mother won prizes for their creations in local country shows, Ms Jenkins said she loves being creative. “I’ve been doing a range of activities since I was about 10-years-old,” Ms Jenkins said. A number of other local residents have also had success at the Easter Show this year. Bernice Mott from St Clair won Best Exhibit in Hand Knitting, while Renee Matthews from Luddenham won Best Australian Equine Related Exhibit.

BUSINESS W What to do when you’re ‘under the pump’ ‘u
Is it time to challenge conventional thinking?
Michelle Grice // Founder of Shel Design

N
o matter how well we plan, there will times in our business where we are ‘under the pump’. Deadlines clash, a crisis arises, staff are away unexpectedly, and so on. As I write this article, I am frantically attempting to finish the items on my to-do list before I head overseas for a few weeks! And even though I have planned this trip for many months, because my break is not occurring when I would usually take time off, it has crept up on me somewhat. So how can you (and I) manage periods like this? How can we make sure it doesn’t all turn into a problem? 1. Prioritise as you go: Address the most urgent needs first and discern between ‘emergency’ and something that can wait. Putting things into perspective can also help (for example: is it really going to be dire if this is not done on time?) 2. Pay attention and think carefully: When you are rushed and trying to get
T
through a long list of tasks, it can be easy to forget your usual procedures. Try to stick to the way you normally do things so that mistakes are not made and important items are not missed. 3. Take time to settle down: Sometimes when a crisis occurs, our first reaction might be to tweet about it or talk it over with multiple people. But sometimes the well-meaning comments from friends and family can ‘muddy the waters’. Take time to think a situation over (even sleep on it if possible) and then decide who to talk to. 4. Take a break: This might sound like the opposite of what you need to do! And it is definitely the one I struggle with most. But giving yourself time to relax and rejuvenate will give your brain greater capacity to get through a frantic period. 5. Breathe: Breathing deeply (count from one to 10 as you inhale and one to 10 as you exhale) brings more oxygen into your bloodstream. It tells your body and brain to reduce the intensity of what you are facing and will calm you down.
here is a lot of truth in the saying, “To learn, you must first unlearn”. Conventional thinking is more like conventional regurgitation. It is what we do when we settle for common knowledge as being the right method. Most people agree with conventional thinking because it gives them a false sense of security. Sort of if everyone else believes it, then it must be true. Whatever industry your business is in, there is probably a standard operating procedure for that particular industry. I have heard the words “This is how we do business” or “This is just the way business is done” all too frequently. All the businesses our Centre has seen that are growing have shortened the distance between the future and the present. Nearly every industry has a typical way of conducting business, and some are changing faster than others. If you know that your business has succeeded by doing things the same way for years, or even decades, it’s not time to celebrate and relax. It’s time to get to work and look to the future.
So start challenging conventional thinking. Look for and develop new ideas of doing business. Don’t resist new ideas, concepts and points of view that differ from those that supported your past successes. What got you to where you are is no guarantee for success tomorrow. It’s time to come up with new ideas and products before your competition. I know, it’s easier said than done. However, there are ways to begin this process that may not be as difficult as you may think. Your company can be small or it can be a big business, it really doesn’t matter. So brainstorm with staff, they might only need the opportunity. You might realise you have some intrapreneurs. Talk to business owners that you respect and sponge some of their ideas. If you don’t have access to business owners, look to well-known innovators for inspiration via the Internet, blogs and videos. Sometimes it feels threatening to a business to break the mould that binds their thinking. In order for sustainable growth in your business to occur, developing new ways of thinking and doing business must take place.

U
ntil 2014, March was Australia’s month to celebrate the long years of the rise of women in society, though Women’s History Month. While the official month-long celebration of women is no longer, the Weekender wanted to remember the longstanding success of women in our city. Since 1960, Penrith has had 34 Mayors and just five of them have been women. The first woman that broke tradition was Eileen Cammack, who was elected to Penrith City Council in 1972, at 58-yearsold. Three years later, she was appointed to
the role of Mayor for three terms from 1975 to 1978. In 1973, before she was elected as Mayor, Ms Cammack was a Liberal Party candidate for Penrith, which she re-contested in 1976 during her reign in the top job. Outside of politics, Ms Cammack was the founder of the first pathology service in Penrith and the first pathology laboratory at Nepean District Hospital in 1948. Ms Cammack remained at Penrith Council until 1991, and during that time worked alongside and under her female successor, Faye Lo Po. Faye Lo Po was born in 1936, entered Local Government in the 1970s, and served again in the 1980s before becoming the second female Mayor of Penrith. A longtime member of the Australian

The Tattersalls Hotel has had a few different names over the years, including Embassy and Uncle Buck’s, and the current hotel is now on Station Street but doesn’t utilise its original corner space. Labor Party, Ms Lo Po served for one term in 1990 to 1991, before winning the seat of Penrith in the State Election. As a state member between 1993 and 2003, she held a number of portfolios for women, community and trading, and even as the Deputy Premier. Penrith’s third female Mayor was Diane Beamer who was in Council at the same time as Ms Lo Po, from 1989 to 1995. Born in 1960, Ms Beamer was a Labor Party member by 1975, and during her time in Council ran unsuccessfully for the seat of Badgerys Creek in 1991. After that, Ms Beamer became Deputy Mayor for one term from 1992, then was Mayor for one term from 1993. By 1995, she was finally elected to the Badgerys Creek seat, and after 15 years in State politics quit in 2010 (when she was State Mulgoa MP). After Ms Beamer’s reign, Penrith’s fourth Mayor was current Councillor Jackie Greenow. Cr Greenow was elected to Council in 1995 and served five terms as Deputy Mayor, and one as Mayor in 2004 to 2005. She has been appointed a life member in the Australian Local Government Women’s Association for her dedication and commitment to women working for and elected to Council. Cr Greenow commended current Mayor Karen McKeown when she was elected to the role in September last year. Cr McKeown will remain as Penrith’s fifth female Mayor until September this year, when Local Government elections take place. Do you think Penrith’s next Mayor will also be a woman? One year ago...
On the cover of the Weekender’s March 27, 2015 edition, Premier Mike Baird fit one last funding commitment in, just in the nick of time. Days out before the State Election, Mr Baird promised a whopping $12 million to the Penrith Panthers to help construct the Western Sydney Community and Sports Centre. When built, the multi-purpose state-of-the-art centre will provide space for netball, futsal, wheelchair rugby and other indoor sports, a large gymnasium and exhibition and event halls. Further inside the paper we paid tribute to the fallen as locals flocked to the Poppy Park, that was a spectacular sea of red in the CBD. The Poppy Park was home to over 102,000 poppies with each poppy displaying the name of an individual that had died during service. It was the final issue before the State Election on March 28, and it was filled with suburb and candidate profiles for the community to make a decision before heading to the polls. In sport, former Panthers coach Ivan Cleary declared his faith in the team that suffered a loss to the Sydney Roosters. We also spoke with Nigel Plum just before he hung up his boots at the end of the season.

MATCH PREVIEW
DRAGONS
The Panthers in action against Brisbane
TROY DODDS @troydodds
S
pectacular. Incredible. Unbelievable. Use whatever words you want to describe it, but last Saturday night’s 23-22 win by Penrith over Brisbane will remain etched in every fan’s memory for years to come. We’ve all seen great comebacks and close finishes before, but this one was particularly special – a side with its back against the wall, down on troops and with its confidence clearly rattled somehow came from 16 points down to claim victory against the side many tout as certain grand finalists in 2016. There’s no doubt Brisbane switched off but when they were finally alert to Penrith’s comeback, they simply couldn’t stop the momentum. The enthusiasm of
debutant Te Maire Martin, the experience of Jamie Soward and the renewed focus of Peter Wallace at hooker combined to produce the points Penrith needed to win the contest. Throw in a roaring performance from Reagan Campbell-Gillard (minus his first tackle blunder) and Bryce Cartwright’s tremendous ability to keep the ball alive (even if it is a little ‘rocks and diamonds’ sometimes) and you have a football team that’s clearly on its way to finding its mojo. It was a win that could change and redirect Penrith’s season. When you consider the victory happened without Trent Merrin, Dean Whare, James Segeyaro, Matt Moylan and Waqa Blake, it’s even more incredible. The likely return of Moylan this weekend (even though he wasn’t named by coach Anthony Griffin on Tuesday) is particularly important for Penrith. Even though the Panthers got home on Saturday night, replacement fullback Will Smith’s confidence took a major hit. In short, he
had a shocker. The Panthers desperately need Moylan back in the side to add the X-factor that was missing in the opening two games of the season, both of which Penrith had every chance to win. There’s no doubt the Panthers still have some work to do. While he improved in the second half, Peta Hiku’s defence is questionable – four missed tackles in both of his last two games is being somewhat overshadowed by his great finishing ability, but it needs to be tightened up. It’s no surprise that Brisbane spent so much time targeting his side of the field. And the Panthers need to work on their fifth tackle options – constantly putting the footy in the air when nobody is chasing through to contest the ball is about as useful as an ashtray on a motorcycle. The Dragons won tough in awful conditions at the Sydney Cricket Ground last Sunday, coming away 8-6 winners over Souths in a game overshadowed by the Sam Burgess injury. The side appeared a little out of sorts

without the experienced Benji Marshall in the halves and he is again missing for this game due to a hamstring complaint, unless he is a late inclusion. St George-Illawarra have scored the lowest points out of all 16 clubs so far this season, and they won last weekend’s game on the back of some great defence. As long as Penrith can match them in defence, they should walk away with the win. Tip: Panthers by 12

PANTHER RUMBLINGS with the Masked Panther
BIG MAC FREE TO PLAY » He scored a rare try last weekend but
Jeremy Latimore’s performance against the Broncos has been overshadowed by a Dangerous Contact charge. Latimore has been suspended for a week over the incident involving Brisbane youngster Greg Eden in the 23rd minute.
» Meanwhile, Sam McKendry (pictured)
has managed to escape suspension despite being charged by the NRL match review committee following last weekend’s stunning win over Brisbane. McKendry was charged with a grade one Careless High Tackle for a 64th minute incident involving Josh McGuire, but the charge didn’t attract enough points to warrant a suspension.
» Congratulations to Te Maire Martin for
the way he handled himself in interviews after his incredible debut last Saturday night. While he did let a naughty word slip in his on-field interview with Scott McRae, he was composed and spoke very well to Andy Raymond on Fox Sports. The kid has a huge future and it always helps when you can handle yourself in front of the media.
» Trent Merrin is likely to return for the
Panthers to play against his former club St George-Illawarra this Sunday afternoon. Merrin was a shock withdrawal from last weekend’s game after coming down with a virus. Coach Anthony Griffin received a call from the club doctor at 10am on Saturday informing him that Merrin was too ill to play. It was a double blow for Merrin as he missed out on singing the Penrith victory song for the first time.
» Matt Moylan is also likely to return on Sunday, despite not being named.
» There is a rather incredible and bizarre
story surrounding Elijah Taylor missing the opening game against Canberra doing the rounds. While Taylor did nothing wrong as far as off field indiscretions are concerned, there was certainly a specific reason as to why he was dropped from the game.
» Penrith’s match against Brisbane went
head to head with the Wanderers’ top of the table clash with Adelaide last Saturday night, and not surprisingly the NRL came out way on top. A whopping 303,000 people tuned in on Fox Sports to watch Penrith beat Brisbane 23-22, while just 45,000 watched the 0-all draw between the Wanderers and Adelaide. More people actually watched the late night EPL clash between Everton and Arsenal than the A-League, which is a worrying trend for the local league.
» Matty Johns from Fox Sports was in
town last Thursday for a function at the Pioneer Tavern to raise money for the Great Walk Foundation. Johns appeared on stage with Panthers legend Mark Geyer and the function was a major hit, with some great stories from the past being told. Chris Warren was on deck to MC the event.
» NRL micro figures are back by popular
demand for the 2016 season, with the first of three series of figures on sale in Coles and Coles Express stores in New South Wales and Queensland. Fans will be able to collect mini versions of their favourite players for just $2 each, with the first series of figures including 23 players and at least one player from every club represented in the collection on sale. Bryce Cartwright is represented for the
Panthers. I’ll be picking up one when I buy my Easter Eggs for the little Masked Panthers tonight!
» Congratulations to Todd Greenberg
who has officially been appointed as the new CEO of the NRL. “My goal will be to unite the game at every level because, working together, there is no limit to the potential for Rugby League which can continue to thrive and grow,” Greenberg said last week. “I have a genuine love of this game and I intend to continue to use my experience to build on the steps we have taken over the last two and a half years. We intend to deliver the best possible outcomes for fans, the clubs, the State leagues and the players.”
» Congratulations too to the team at Pan-
thers in charge of social media. Things have improved in a huge way in recent years and the engagement with fans has never been better. To be able to watch the players sing the team victory song last weekend just minutes after it happened was simply terrific.
» Discussions are being held between
the NRL and several clubs about moving home games away from suburban grounds as part of the State Government’s stadium plan. However, the Panthers are not involved in these discussions. There will be no push from the NRL for Penrith to move games, with the focus on a brand new stadium for the greater west.

anthers prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard believes Penrith’s heartbreaking loss to the Bulldogs in Round 2 gave them that extra bit of fight and motivation to defeat the Broncos last Saturday night. With Penrith down 22-6 in the first half, the home side came roaring home in the second scoring 17 unanswered points to hand Brisbane their first loss of the season. Speaking on Sunday morning, CampbellGillard said Penrith took plenty from the agonising last minute loss to Canterbury. “The final 30 seconds last week was pretty gut wrenching,” he said. “You never like to lose at home and to get
the win last night against Brisbane by one point, was pretty good.” Whilst acknowledging his fellow teammates, the 22-year-old local junior also reaped praise on the 12,000 strong home crowd who helped Penrith over the line. “Our whole back five is massive for our team, when we were blowing in the middle they just came in and took control,” Campbell-Gillard said. “The crowd also really got behind us last night and put goosebumps on everyone’s body to get the win.” With key forward Trent Merrin a late withdrawal due to a virus, CampbellGillard took control of Penrith’s forward pack, running for a team-high 155 metres and completing 23 tackles. Campbell-Gillard believes the NSW Origin forward will be right to return against his old club, St George Illawarra, this Sunday.

Martin
magic
NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87
P
enrith Panthers rookie Te Maire Martin has lived up to the hype after he enjoyed the perfect NRL debut last Saturday night at Pepper Stadium. The 20-year-old Kiwi half was a late inclusion for Penrith’s must-win game against the Brisbane Broncos and he didn’t disappoint – scoring a try and kicking the match winning field goal with just minutes remaining on the clock. It was certainly a debut no one will forget anytime soon, especially Martin, who didn’t expect Penrith’s first win of the season to be all about him. “It’s sort of like a dream to be honest,” Martin said the following day.
“Just to get my debut is a big achievement for me; it’s been a goal of mine this year and to get it this early in the season is something I’m proud of. “To get the win on debut is massive; I couldn’t thank the boys enough. They did a lot for me in the off-season and it’s something I won’t forget that’s for sure.” Since arriving from the Wests Tigers over the summer, Martin has been a fan favourite among Panthers fans despite not playing a single game of first grade. With potential and skill likened to that of Benji Marshall, supporters were desperate to see the Junior Kiwi finally get a crack at the big time. Martin admits he owes a lot to Penrith’s experienced halves in Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace. “Wallace and Soward have helped me out a lot, they’ve taught me how to keep my composure,” he said.
Te Maire Martin made his first grade debut for Penrith last weekend closing stages of the one-point thriller at Pepper Stadium. “Te Maire’s a fantastic kid and he’s very level headed,” he said. Martin will hope to continue his top start to NRL life when he takes on childhood hero Benji Marshall this Sunday. “Benji has been my idol since I was little, I would love to play against him,” he said.
“Even on the field yesterday Wallace was telling me to do this, do that, while Soward really took the reigns of the game and made my job easier. “More time with them will make me a better player.” Soward, who paired up with Martin in the halves last weekend, praised the youngster for staying composed in the

A STAR IS BORN A try and the winning field goal. Has Penrith unearthed the next big name in rugby league? Only time will tell, but judging by young Te Maire Martin’s (pictured) debut performance on Saturday night against the Broncos, I get the feeling that this kid will quickly become a household name and a favourite amongst the fans. Obviously scoring a try and kicking the winning field goal was fantastic for the young man personally, but it’s his defence, support play and organisation skills that coach Anthony Griffin would have been most pleased about. The challenge now is to see if he can back his performance up against the Dragons who are coming off a good win themselves. I believe he can. I don’t like to see teams struggling to win games unless it’s Manly, but I am
amazed at how far off the pace the Roosters are at the moment. They look like a team that is lacking confidence and direction, and I am not even sure the return of Mitchell Pearce will be enough to save the Roosters from missing the top eight for the first time in three years, but time will tell. While we are on the subject of teams that are struggling, I have to mention the Warriors. For a team that shows so much potential each year they never fail to leave you scratching your head wondering where it is all going wrong. They just don’t seem to be able to compete for the full 80 minutes and I don’t put it down to their fitness, I have to question their ability to stay mentally focused and if they don’t get this right fast, it will be another long season for the Warriors and could ultimately cost the coach his job.

I wrote last week that our young and relatively inexperienced Panthers side needed to get a win to get them going. Then Saturday night happened. To overcome Brisbane, one of the premiership heavyweights, in such dramatic fashion is truly a great achievement. I hope all the members and fans at Pepper Stadium enjoyed the game as much as I did. The next few weeks are not just important in the context of our season, but also in the history of the club. In just a few days time we will relocate our football operations into the brand new Panthers Rugby League Academy. The players, coaches and all the staff are very excited about the move. The Academy is an amazing state-of-the-art facility which has everything rugby league players need to develop to their full potential. It will be used by our senior playing groups, along with our under20s, and all our coaching and admin-

istration staff. While the Academy will be officially opened next week, we’re currently in the process of organising a members day so you can all have a look around our new home. But despite all the excitement we can’t lose sight of our number one focus – winning games. The Dragons will be high on confidence after knocking off Souths and always pose a significant challenge down there at WIN Stadium. Fortunately we’ve got Trent Merrin back to add some extra starch to our forward pack, and Waqa Blake bringing some X-factor out wide. It will also be good to see Sione Katoa and George Jennings return from their respective injuries against the Cutters. There’s a real sense here at the Panthers we’re moving forward and building momentum. You want my fearless prediction? We’ll claim strong wins in the next two away games before returning home for our big showdown against the Cowboys.

ELCOME TO THE WORLD OF SYDNEY FOX RESCUE!
SFR are a registered Australia charity and animal advocacy organisation. Since 2012, we have worked to rescue, care for and rehome a variety of introduced species with a particular focus on foxes. Unfortunately as an introduced species in Australia, the welfare of foxes often falls through the cracks. We as Australians consistently fail to stand up and take responsibility for an animal we brought to this country. Foxes are not catered to by native animal organisations (like WIRES) or companion animal organisations (like the RSPCA) which is where SFR come in. SFR work to remove foxes from the wild, desexing and socialising orphaned and injured foxes and giving them a life in captivity. At the present time foxes are only able to be rehomed with commercial facilities such wildlife parks and zoos, a policy we hope to change in the future to allow for private ownership of foxes (as was the case prior to 2015). As well as foxes we work to rescue and advocate for any designated "pest" or "feral" species in New South Wales, this includes cats, dingoes, wild dogs, deer, and european hares.

LOWER GRADES » Intrust Super Premiership NSW: After
coming off a last start loss, Panthers reserve grade coach Steve Georgallis has made a number of changes to this weekend’s line-up. After injuring themselves in the preseason, George Jennings and Sione Katoa will make their long-awaited returns this Sunday afternoon as they push for NRL selection, while Matt Place joins Sam Clune in the halves and Malakai Watene-Zelezniak fills in at fullback. Last Saturday afternoon the Panthers suffered their second loss of the season, going down to the Wentworthville Magpies 30-14. Wentworthville led 12-10 at half-time with Maliko Filino and Corey HarawiraNaera scoring for the Panthers in the first half. The Magpies continued to run over the top of the home side in the second, scoring the next four tries before Penrith finally got a consolation try through Filino in the closing minutes. This Sunday afternoon Penrith will look to bounce back when they travel to WIN Stadium to take on the Illawarra Cutters.

Meanwhile, for the second straight week, the Panthers have demolished yet another side on home turf with a 48-16 thrashing of the Broncos last Saturday. Penrith led 26-0 at half-time with Rob Jennings, Jack Hetherington, Jerome Luai, Fuimanu Enese and Nathan Cleary each scoring tries. The Broncos made a slight comeback in the second half, but the Panthers continued to edge further with Braidon Burns scoring a double while Liam Martin and Corey Waddell also scored. This Sunday afternoon the Panthers will travel to Wollongong to tackle the St George-Illawarra Dragons at 1.45pm.

ENTERTAINMENT PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
They’re taking on the world KATE REID
F
ans may have come to know them from their win on the fourth season of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’, but for Justice Crew member Lukas Bellesini the passion for break dancing started a decade earlier. While he never could have guessed at the time that he was destined to become part of a successful dance/pop group, it was his first glimpse of the video for the Bomfunk MC’s track ‘Freestyler’ that kicked off the crazy ride that Justice Crew is still on six years after the group’s win. “That film clip was the first time that I actually saw breaking and I was instantly magnetised to it,” Lukas said. Since coming to the attention of audiences in 2010, Justice Crew have gone
from backyard hip hop dance crew to chart topping urban/pop group with the release of singles ‘Que Sera’, ‘Boom Boom’, ‘Best Night’, ‘Everybody’ and their latest track ‘Good Time’. It’s no surprise the group have achieved so much commercial success. They clearly have a keen ear for catchy pop tracks that audiences have taken a shine to. For Lukas the key to selecting the perfect track is to trust the intuition of each of the group’s members. “We’ve got six different inputs and six different opinions and if all of those six line up on the same song and we’re all on the same page about it… then there’ll usually be a fair amount of the public that will too,” he said. Regardless of their success on the charts, Justice Crew still have a strong drive to help inspire a love of dance in the next generation of entertainers. It’s a
passion that comes from their early days as dancers. “We’re always there just to try and help anyone out when they need the help,” Lukas said. “If we can do that through dance then that’s a prefect vessel and a perfect tool to communicate with younger people especially.” The group’s success on ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ has taken them from the western suburbs of Sydney to eight ARIA nominations, a string of hit singles and international tours with pop superstars including One Direction, Kesha and Pitbull. “It’s been so surreal,” Lukas said of performing alongside some of the biggest names in pop music. “We’ll be in the middle of performing in the Pitbull tour in the US and we’re in Louisiana or Denver on stage in front of
thousands of people, and you just sort of take a moment out and look at how far we’ve come. “It makes us so proud to be able to share our craft with the world, and we just want to be able to keep doing that.” While their touring schedule may be a little more international these days, Justice Crew still love coming back to western Sydney, and Penrith in particular, to perform for the fans who have been with them from the beginning. “It’s kind of like a little home base for us,” Lukas said. “We’ve done quite a lot of work out there and we do have a bit of a fan base out there.” Justice Crew will be performing at the Evan Theatre on Saturday, April 16 at 8pm. Tickets are $41.60. To purchase tickets, visit www.penrith.panthers. com.au or call 4720 5555.

Perfect show to binge watch
Ghost opens, and it’s spooktacular!
I
n the days of the jukebox musical, it’s hard to find a touching story on stage that doesn’t have a megamix as its finale. And while those fun musicals may have a place, so do the serious tales of love, loss and tragedy. The musical adaptation of Ghost has just opened at the Theatre Royal and while it may seem a rather odd movie-to-musical transition, it’s surprisingly good. The highlight of the show is without doubt the standout performance of Jemma Rix, who knocks it out of the park with her portrayal of Molly. The show is highly recommended. – Troy Dodds

t was a sense of adventure that led Derek and Anna Hooper to the wild and windswept shores of Cape Jaffa on South Australia’s Limestone Coast back in 1993, and for them to trail-blaze this distinctive area even further by creating the Coast’s ultimately first fully-certified biodynamic vineyards to feed their Cape Jaffa Winery. Located some 300km south of Adelaide, the Hooper’s 25ha vineyard uses no artificial fertilisers, herbicides, pesticides or fungicides, but instead relies on such natural alternatives as cow manure-based composts, milk whey, and other natural tonics for healthy soil life… coupled with vineyard operations timed to coincide with specific phases of the moon to further increase effects. Derek works the vineyard and Anna makes the wines, both drawing on past experiences working in worldrenowned wineries across Burgundy, Bordeaux and the Rhone Valley, and at Cape Jaffa combining Old and New World techniques. Amongst their wines is one called Anna’s Blend that’s a somewhat offbeat mix of 24 per cent Semillon for backbone and structure, 30 per cent Sauvignon Blanc to increase texture and complexity, and 46 per cent Gewurztraminer to enhance and preserve floral aromatics. Appearing a little sweet at first sip, this one from the 2015 vintage in fact pans out into a wine with delightful citrus and savoury flavours… ideal, Anna suggests, with a thin crust pizza with prosciutto, rocket and preserved green figs. $25 at cellar door, or join their club and save $6 a bottle. To purchase, visit www.capejaffawines.com.au.

DVD The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 Rated M // KATE REID It’s been a long wait for fans but the final film in the hugely successful Hunger Games franchise is now available on DVD and Blu-ray. ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2’ sees the battle for freedom for the people of Panem come to a head when Katniss Everdeen, her allies – including Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) and Gale Hawthorne (Liam Hemsworth) – and soldiers from the districts, take down The Capitol and its malicious leader, President Snow (Donald Sutherland). But all is not as it appears, and while Katniss is fighting to save her family, friends, and her community, she must also decide who can be trusted and who may be hiding some very sinister ulterior motives.
The movie offers lots of heart racing moments and visually it’s a beautiful film to watch. Aside from the action and the aesthetics, there’s also plenty of heart and emotion to the story, giving the series the poignant ending it deserves. Jennifer Lawrence is once again faultless in the role of Katniss. Her portrayal of the flawed and relatable hero is arguably the highlight of ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2’, and her casting is sure to have had a huge impact on the success of the franchise. Whether you’re a fan of the books, the films, or have yet to experience either, ‘The Hunger Games’ series is a must-see film franchise.
CINEMA Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice Rated M // KATE REID
Caitlin Moran – Moranifesto // KATE REID
When it comes to the comic book world it doesn’t get any bigger than Superman and Batman. After spending their lives fighting evil these two superheroes will turn their focus against each other in the much anticipated film ‘Batman vs Superman:
NOW OPEN IN SOUTH PENRITH!
Dawn of Justice’. After Superman’s (Henry Cavill) battle against Zod (Michael Shannon), the city of Metropolis suffers from devastating collateral damage and loss of human life. Billionaire and crime fighter Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) is not impressed with what’s happened to his city and decides it’s time for Superman to be taken down. While the two are battling it out, villain Lex Luther (Jesse Eisenberg) creates a new threat, Doomsday, who just might destroy Metropolis for good.
The cast also features Gal Gadot as comic hero Wonder Woman, and Amy Adams as Superman’s love interest Lois Lane. To say comic book fans are excited for the film’s release would be a huge understatement. So far reviews have been very positive, which will no doubt be music to the ears of fans of these two comic powerhouses. ‘Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice’ is currently screening at Hoyts Penrith. See www.hoyts.com.au for more information including session times.

Caitlin Moran – award-winning columnist and author of How To Be A Woman, How To Build A Girl and Moranthology – is back with her new novel Moranifesto. Combining her favourite columns from recent years with new writings, Caitlin explores a range of subjects from pop culture pieces like ‘I Can’t Stop Listening to Get Lucky’ to global issues in ‘Syria: A Man on a Roof’. This collection really does cover a lot of ground, but one thing that’s common to each piece is Caitlin’s charismatic personality. Her unique sense of humour and her intelligence shines through no matter what subject she is discussing, be it hipsters or refugees. It’s this personality that makes her work so enjoyable.

Ê For the first time in two years, Foxtel is upping the price of their basic package from $25 a month to $26 a month. While a $1 increase won’t break the bank, it is annoying a company can increase their price when they’ve closed down a number of channels recently (Bio and [V]), and lost the rights to mega sports like the English Premier League. No wonder people prefer to get their entertainment these days from streaming services!
GOGGLEBOX AUSTRALIA APRIL 6 LIFESTYLE CHANNEL
Ê Speaking of streaming services, the reality-skewed Hayu launched in Australia this week. Featuring 3000 episodes of reality TV, Hayu costs $5.99 per month and includes such shows as ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians’, ‘The Real Housewives’ and ‘Top Chef’. To check it out, visit www.hayu.com. Ê Still on reality TV, and Mariah Carey is set to star in a new series called ‘Mariah’s World’. The new reality show focuses on Mariah as she embarks on a world tour and plans her marriage to James Packer. There’s no word yet if Mr Packer will make any appearances but I can almost put money on it that he will. After all, what Mariah wants – she will get! The eight part one-hour docu-series will air on the E! channel. Ê ‘Breaking Bad’ prequel ‘Better Call Saul’ has been renewed for a third season. AMC has ordered 10 more episodes from Sony Pictures TV. Season two is currently being fast-tracked on Stan, while season one is on Foxtel. Ê Channel Nine has announced Nova breakfast radio duo Fitzy and Wippa as hosts of the revived clip series ‘20 to 1’.
The pair will replace the legendary Bert Newton for the popular countdown show, which will cover pop culture, sport, music, TV, movies and current affairs. The new ‘20 to 1’ is expected to air on Channel Nine mid-year.
Ê KIIS FM host Kate Langbroek and comedian Cam Knight have been announced as presenters of Nine’s new real estate show ‘Unreal Estate’. The series sees the two-some romping around extraordinary Australian homes and meeting the larger-than-life people who live in them. They will explore everything from gorgeous getaways in exotic places to fun houses with big toys, wondrous games rooms and incredible sporting spaces, party homes designed for the ultimate entertainers, and way out-of-the-box homes in churches – even caves!
Ê Season three of ‘Gogglebox Australia’ will premiere on The LifeStyle Channel on Wednesday, April 6 at 7.30pm. Just like the previous two seasons, the show will also air on Channel Ten the very next night, Thursday, April 7 at 8.30pm. This season will also feature new households still to be announced. Ê Former ‘The Voice Australia’ host Darren McMullen will front a new format for Channel Seven called ‘The Big Music Quiz’. The French format comprises a series of intensive trivia challenges with celebrities guessing who originally performed a popular cover version, figuring out which song is being played at 10 times its normal speed, tested on extracts linked to their career, and identifying a cover song sung in a different language. Sounds like fun!

SPECIAL FEATURE HEALTH & WELLBEING or most on the health and fitness continuum getting started or back on track is the hardest part. We often find ourselves making excuses and justifications for why we aren’t exercising regularly or making healthy food choices. Is this you? Don’t worry, you are not alone. Often we give power to stigmas and mistruths that hinder our progress, so it’s important to increase our knowledge around some of these common misconceptions: • Regularly female clients will come to me with the primary goal of ‘toning up’ but are hesitant to breach the weight floor in fear of becoming ‘bulky’. Resistance training will not instantly make all women ‘bulky’, if anything resistance programs complement general strength and increases the efficiency of one’s metabolic rate making the body a more efficient fat burner. • All or nothing approaches to training. We do not have to steamroll ourselves every session to get the best results. Everyone’s goals are different but from the novice trainer to elite athlete it is important to mix up low impact and high impact sessions to create sustainability, not only in our training habits but on our joints and muscles. Find a healthy balance and remember if you are at the gym and not on the couch you are already winning. • Chasing that washboard midsection doesn’t just involve hours of crunches. Our nutrition can have the greatest influence on our body’s musculature. If we are after that flat

number of hospital visits will make life a lot easier. “I am a great believer in new technology and I loved the idea of only having five visits with minimal chances of major side effects. I cannot wait to get the treatment behind me as quickly as possible and get on with my life,” he said. Trial Co-Chair, Professor Paul Keall, said the innovative technology has the potential to be transformative for men with early stage prostate cancer, significantly decreasing their treatment time. “The KIM technology will enable safer radiation dose intensification, and therefore the SPARK trial cancer patients will be treated in five treatment sessions over two weeks,” he said. “Potential patients are enthusiastic about the increased accuracy and the shorter treatment time. There are economic benefits to shorter treatment times also, reducing hospital workload and costs as well as the time off work and transport for patients and their families. “KIM is a technology being developed and pioneered in Australia, and is applicable to other cancers affected by motion, including lung, liver, kidney and pancreas cancers. This Australian technology could become the global standard of care for many cancer patients.” SPARK will recruit 48 patients around Australia and researchers expect the efficacy of the KIM technology to be known in late 2017. The trial is coordinated by TROG Cancer Research, co-funded by Cancer Australia and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

SPECIAL FEATURE HEALTH & WELLBEING he latest statistics from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that 2864 people took their own lives in 2014, an increase of over 13 per cent from the previous year. The impact this has on families, friends, schools and communities cannot be overstated. Sometimes when we see numbers such as these, we can feel overwhelmed and wonder if there is anything that we can do to help. The good news is that there are some simple steps we can all take that may help to build some safety around someone who may be thinking of suicide. 1. Ask directly and clearly, for example, “I have noticed you’re under a lot of pressure lately, sometimes when people are under a lot of pressure they may be thinking about suicide. Are you thinking about suicide?” It can be confronting to ask; however, research has proven it is far more dangerous not to ask. 2. Listen and remain with them. They need the space and time to express why they might be feeling the way they do, hold back judgment and just be there with them. Don’t leave them by themselves, if you are unable to stay with them, get someone else you can count on to be with them. 3. Get some further help. A call to Lifeline 13 11 14 may be all that is needed, or 000 if life is in danger. If you can, encourage them to see a GP, psychologist or a counsellor, as they may need some longer term care and support. Mental creativity is high [with the potential for fabulous flashes of inspiration] but don’t blurt out something totally inappropriate. Hasty words can wound and – if you don’t self-edit – then you could end up with an argument on your hands. The weekend stars really spark up your fiery enthusiasm and joie de vivre. So your motto for the moment is from birthday great, Aries writer Emile Zola. “If you ask me what I came into this life to do, I will tell you. I came to live out loud.”

TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Don’t pre-plan and organise the week too much Taurus. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes that you may not be aware of and situations can change at a moment’s notice so try your best to be a flexible and adaptable Bull. And do you have a personal problem that’s bothering you? Listen to the wise words of advice from a trusted mentor or close friend. If that doesn’t help, then tune into what your intuition is telling you. It will point you in the right direction.

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
Prepare for a wonderful week when you can dream big dreams and aspire to spectacularly ambitious schemes for the future, followed by lots of hard work and elbow grease. Your aspirations have a better chance of morphing into reality if you form joint ventures with like-minded souls. Lucky Venus blesses professional or volunteer projects and the more you utilise your negotiation skills, the more successful you’ll be. Don’t let hidden self-doubts hold you back though.

Are you operating on professional auto-pilot? When it comes to work don’t be afraid to throw out the rule-book and start anew. Fresh ideas and innovative thinking will take you far. But make sure you include your partner in your plans, otherwise they’ll feel left-out of the big picture. Single Crabs – obsessing about a former lover won’t help your situation. Pluto requires you to learn from your mistakes; let go of the past; and move on.

Is the grass looking a lot greener elsewhere? Find innovative ways you can add more passion and pizzazz to your life, whether through a challenging hobby; a stimulating new course of study; or an exciting future trip. The planets activate your adventurous and ambitious side but slow down before you come a cropper Lions! Taskmaster Saturn encourages you to walk before you run; as you back up your enthusiastic ideas with a practical, step-by-step plan.
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
Wednesday’s stars boost your brain power and rev up your meticulous attention to detail. So it’s a great day to power through paperwork, do research, edit work and fine-tune important details. Whereas Thursday and Friday are the days to be much more spontaneous and experimental, as you pick up the pace. Virgos are natural-born critics. But this week you need to criticise less and encourage more as you support a child, teenager or friend through a tricky time.
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
This week the planetary focus is firmly on close relationships, as you navigate your way through a romantic problem or a family fiasco. The best way to handle interpersonal issues? Take the time to talk things through in a sensible and sensitive way. And don’t forget to spread some Libran peace, love and happiness around! Inspiration for the week is from birthday great, Aries actress Doris Day. “I like joy: I want to be joyous … I like being happy. I want to make others happy.”
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
When it comes to professional matters, don’t obsess so much Scorpio! If a problem crops up this week, deal with it in a swift and sensible fashion and then move on. And avoid getting stuck in a stultifying rut. Aim to shake things up, as you bring more fun and spontaneity into your daily routine. Your motto is from Warren Beatty. “You’ve achieved success in your field when you don’t know whether what you’re doing is work or play.”
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
This week you’re keen to nurture old friendships – and attract exciting new acquaintances into your world. But avoid negative thinkers who’ll just bring you down. Instead, strive to surround yourself with positive people who encourage your talents and support your dreams for the future. And don’t be a flash-in-the-pan! While you’re fabulous at starting projects, make sure your promises and good intentions can last the distance, so that you actually finish what you begin.

CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Steady Saturn (your ruling planet) forms a marvellous aspect with Mercury (planet of the mind) so it’s a wonderful week for serious thinking and concentrated mental work. But resist the temptation to be hyper-critical and fastidiously fussy. On Thursday and Friday, take the time to really listen to what a loved one has to say. Suddenly you’ll see a current situation from a totally fresh perspective, as you realise there are many more possibilities that you previously thought.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Your wonderfully idiosyncratic mind is activated this week. So you’ll tread a fine line between having lightning flashes of inspiration, and making contrary and controversial comments whether in person or online. Think before you speak! Words have the power to hurt or heal, so use them wisely. And, if you are on the receiving end of some critical comments, try not to take the situation too personally. The stars also promise plenty of phone calls, messages, emails and texts.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Hey Pisces – don’t sit around waiting for your professional fortunes to magically change. With practical, persistent Saturn moving slowly through your career zone, it’s time to stop procrastinating, roll up your sleeves, and get the job done! And you won’t improve your financial situation by thinking small. Creative brainstorming and joint ventures will help you find novel ways to make money, but it won’t happen overnight.

Reid NUTRITION
Last week it was announced that the UK will bring in a tax on soft drinks in a bid to lower sugar consumption and curb the rise in obesity rates. Now celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, who has been one of the most prominent lobbyists for the sugar tax, is encouraging Australia to follow suit. Regardless of where your views lie in the discussion about a potential sugar tax, it is clear that we as a population over consume these types of high sugar, nutrient lacking products. A can of soft drink can include as much as 10 teaspoons

of sugar, and besides adding to your energy consumption for the day, they provide nothing of nutritional value. While this is true I think it’s important that we understand that soft drinks don’t work in isolation. Yes, nutrition wise soft drinks are a poor beverage choice, but if you have a balanced, nutritious diet there’s no harm in enjoying a soft
drink every now and then. Unfortunately for some of us it’s the ‘every now and then’ part that we struggle with. If you fall into this category and are looking to cut back on your soft drink intake there’s a few things you can do. The best change you can make is to replace soft drink with water. Now I know for some people water isn’t the most appealing option. If this is the case for you, try having soda water with a squeeze of lime, lemon or orange. This is a great way to up your water intake while still enjoying a carbonated beverage with a little taste to it. Another option that I recommend is to mix fruit juice with water. While fruit juice is also high in sugar it does have the benefit of being high in vitamin C and by watering it down your sugar intake will be less. Of course milk, tea or coffee are other good alternatives if you’re looking for a more nutritious beverage. So once again the take home message is simple; moderation. A healthy diet can include the occasional soft drink, just don’t over do it. Do you have a health question you would like Kate to answer? Email Kate.Reid@ westernweekender.com.au

Isn’t it good that the government gives us four days off to reflect on the most important events of history? Good Friday is the day we remember Jesus’ death. And on Easter Sunday we celebrate the fact that this very same Jesus rose from the dead. The incredible thing is that Jesus’ death was no accident. Jesus came into our world to die and pay for the consequences which each of us deserves for not treating God as God. Jesus’ death does something quite extraordinary – it reconciles

Step 2: Comb through your hair and clip the side you are not working on out of the way. Step 3: Starting at the hairline take a small section and
create three strands. Take the piece closest to your ear under the hair and bring it to the middle. This is the secret that creates the raised cornrow look! Step 4: Keep braiding working back. With each braiding motion add another section of hair to the braid from the same side as the initial strand. Step 5: Once you have completed braiding to your neck continue plaiting the hair until you can secure your braid with a clear elastic. Step 6: Repeat on the other side. experience life like a local without putting too much stress on your personal bank account. However, even seasoned backpackers recognise there are some things that are worth splurging on. Here are three travel items you should always pay top dollar for: 1. A backpack A good backpack will take you right around the world.
Coming up to Easter, we thought it would be wise to discuss chocolate toxicity in dogs. Chocolate contains cocoa and cocoa contains a compound called theobromine. Theobromine is unfortunately toxic to both dogs and cats. Chocolate toxicity occurs mainly in dogs as they are more inquisitive and they are more likely to eat foreign objects but it can also be seen in other pets. How much chocolate is toxic? The concentration of theobromine varies depending on the type of chocolate. Generally speaking, the

darker the chocolate, the higher the concentration of theobromine and hence the more toxic it is. If your dog eats any amount of chocolate, it is important to immediately contact your veterinarian for advice. What are the signs of chocolate toxic-
Comprised of more pockets, straps and buckles than you can shake a stick at, the backpack is the ultimate travel accessory for any serious, well, backpacker. While it may not be as fashionable as a suitcase or duffel bag, what the backpack lacks in style, it more than makes up for in function and versatility. Lug it up a mountain, throw it on the bus or use it as an oversized pillow while waiting for a train – whatever you need it for, a good backpack is always there for you. 2. Shoes If you’re destined for sunny shores and palm tree lined beaches, there’s a good chance that you’ll spend the majority of your time walking around barefoot or in thongs. However, while the classic Australian footwear is great for a relaxed jaunt down to the beach, for longer excursions you may want to consider buying some better walking shoes. 3. Insurance Travel insurance provides you with the ultimate peace of mind. There’s always a risk of injury or illness when travelling overseas, particularly if you’re seeking thrills or visiting developing nations. Accidents requiring treatment can be costly, so it’s best to be safe.
ity? The symptoms of a toxicity depend on the amount of chocolate eaten and they can vary in severity. They generally include excitement, trembling, vomiting, diarrhoea, increased heart rate and tremors. In severe cases, affected animals can even seizure and die. What is the treatment? Unfortunately there is no anti-toxin available for theobromine and treatment is generally supportive. If your dog has eaten chocolate in the previous few hours then your veterinarian can induce vomiting through the use of medications. Medications such as activated charcoal can also be given orally as this binds up any left over toxin. Animals that are already showing symptoms are also usually placed on a drip to help flush the toxin from their body. We hope you all have a wonderful Easter.

LEGAL MATTERS
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced on Monday that he will recall Parliament, bringing the Budget forward a week, and setting the scene for a possible double dissolution election. Speculation has been rife in the media that this might occur, but everyday Australians might not necessary understand what a double dissolution election is, especially considering that this would be the first time this has occurred since 1987. In Australia, for a law to be passed, it must be approved by the two houses of Parlia-

ment, being the Senate and the House of Representatives. If there is disagreement over a proposed Bill and a deadlock occurs, the Australian Constitution provides a mechanism to solve this problem by “dissolving the Parliament” which means that both the Senate and the House of Representatives are shut down in order for a Federal Election to take place
to determine the matter. All Senators and Members of the House of Representatives must then be re-elected in order to hold their seats. One of the following three results can occur: 1. Every Senator and Member of Parliament is re-elected and therefore the government remains exactly the same on both sides. 2. The sitting government wins more seats than it had before, making it more likely that their laws will be passed. 3. The Opposition win more seats than the sitting government, potentially meaning a new government and the laws that triggered the election being defeated. A good example of how this type of political situation can play out occurred in 1975 when the Whitlam government could not pass laws pertaining to the Federal Budget, and therefore could not legally spend government money. In that example however, the Prime Minister chose not to dissolve the parliament, causing the Governor General to dismiss the government resulting in an election anyway. If Mr Turnbull triggers a double dissolution election, it will be held on July 2, 2016.

NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87
J
aguar has announced the launch of a new sponsorship with Vivid Sydney 2016 as a Vivid Supporter. In celebration of the luxury British carmaker’s 80th anniversary, Jaguar will light up Martin Place in Sydney as part of the 23 day festival of light, music and ideas, the largest of its kind in the world. A highlight of the Vivid Supporter sponsorship will be a creative light installation built around and inspired by the all-new Jaguar F-PACE, a car that Jaguar is calling ‘an SUV with the soul of a sports car’. From 6pm each night of the Festival, Jaguar’s light projection artwork, created in collaboration with the festival’s creative director Ignatius Jones, will illuminate the Vivid precinct on Martin Place. Vivid Sydney, which will run from May 27 to June 18, is an initiative of Destination NSW, and each year transforms the city into a colourful canvas of light, music, and ideas, in a major celebration of the creative industries. In 2016, it will run for an additional five nights, providing visitors with even more time to experience the spectacular light, music and ideas that illuminate the Harbour City each winter. The Jaguar F-PACE, which will take centre stage at Vivid, is the ultimate practical sports car, blending exhilarating performance with intuitive technology and maximum efficiency.

Speaking with the Weekender, Giants midfielder Lachie Whitfield believes continued improvement is the key to playing finals footy in 2016. “Internally we are just looking at winning more games than last year and showing improvement,” he said. “It’s everyone’s aim to make finals but if we can make an improvement on last year, it will be a successful year.” After a hot and gruelling pre-season, the 21-year-old Victorian is looking forward to getting back out onto the field and putting everything he learned into action. “As the game changes you have to do
different things to keep up,” he said. “Our pre-season did change a little bit – it was more constructive instead of just running different drills. The coaching staff incorporated everything into gameplay situations, so you learn the game plan early while getting fit at the same time. “We trained shorter but harder, which was much more enjoyable for the boys.” Whitfield was the AFL’s number one pick at the 2012 AFL Draft, and has since played 51 games in his first three seasons in the league. Last year the Dandenong Stingrays junior played 21 games, kicking six goals. While Whitfield rates his career so far as
“somewhat inconsistent”, he is hoping to finally live up to the expectations of being a former number one pick. “I think expectations are higher on everyone this year, in our team, and our club,” he said. “Personally, the ‘number one pick’ tag doesn’t mean much to me or to anyone at the club. “There’s pressure around me to perform this year – I’m coming into my fourth year – but it’s pressure I place on myself. “We all want to be the best we can be.” The Giants will look to start their season with a bang when they battle the Demons at 1.40pm this Saturday in Melbourne.

Penrith still alive after miracle win
Wanderers hoping to make it an extra Good Friday
Story continued from » p. 80 With the game going right down to the wire, Penrith coach Steve Small almost called for a defibrillator in the dressing room. “At 8/60 I thought we were in for an early exit but the boys were brilliant to fight back,” he said. “Ryan Smith and Matthew Halse played magnificently… it was just one of those memorable days that’ll be talked about for 30 years.” 29-year-old Smith, a medium pace bowler, has been a member of the Penrith Cricket Club for many years, but his incredible heroics with the bat last weekend was something his coach never saw coming. “We’re talking about a bowler who doesn’t have many net sessions during the week… I’ve never seen anything like it,” Small said. Penrith were finally dismissed, leaving Campbelltown-Camden a target of 236 runs to win. An 81 run first wicket stand gave the visitors a terrific platform to chase down their target, however Penrith’s bowlers stuck to their guns to produce a dramatic two run win. Smith again starred with four wickets while state cricketer Josh Lalor took three scalps. Penrith will return to Howell Oval this weekend to take on Sydney.

he Western Sydney Wanderers have gone one point clear at the top of the A-League ladder after a 0-0 draw against Adelaide United last Saturday night at Pirtek Stadium. It was a frustrating evening for the home side who dominated the match and shot count (16-3) but were unable to conjure up a winner despite a barrage of second half pressure. For the second straight week the Wanderers have held a team scoreless, with right back Scott Neville praising his side’s toughness in defence. “The last two weeks have been very positive defensively,” he said. “We’ve been very resilient and disciplined in defence, we now just have to convert our chances and really punish teams.” Despite sharing the points with one of the top clubs in the league, the 27-yearold said the team were pleased with the overall performance. “We were really happy with the performance on Saturday night against Adelaide, we were just disappointed we couldn’t get the victory and score a goal,” he said.

More than 15,000 fans packed into Wanderland but it wasn’t enough to get the red and black home. The Western Sydney Wanderers will hit the road this Friday when they take on a desperate Melbourne Victory side at AAMI Park. Melbourne, who sit on the cusp of finals football in sixth place, will be keen to cement their position in the top six with a victory tomorrow night. Neville said the key to a Wanderers win will be converting chances. “I think Melbourne in Melbourne will be a tough game and they’ll be prepared for it,” he said. Neville is convinced the game will go down to the wire. “It would be great to dominate the game but I think Melbourne Victory are too strong a side to go there with that attitude,” he said. The two sides last met in Melbourne in early February with the game ending in a 1-1 draw. “We’ve got to work really hard early in the game and hopefully take control by the end of it,” Neville said. Kick off between Melbourne Victory and the Western Sydney Wanderers is at 7.40pm this Good Friday at AAMI Park. The match will be shown live on Fox Sports and SBS.

Around the grounds RUGBY: The new-look Penrith Emus have gone down to Gordon 39-7 in Round 1 of the Shute Shield competition. Penrith were well in the game at half-time with Gordon leading 10-7, but a couple of players sent to the sin bin in the second half saw the Emus crumble. Despite the loss there were plenty of positive signs for the Emus especially in defence. This Saturday afternoon the Penrith Emus will play their first home game at Nepean Rugby Park against Sydney University. Kick off is at 3pm.

Bears players claw for gold in Mexico Australia placed as favourites to take out Ice Hockey World Championship next month NATHAN TAYLOR
our players from local Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) club the Sydney Bears will travel to Mexico City next month to compete at the 2016 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. Bears captain Michael Schlamp along with teammates Anthony Kimlin, Richard Tesarik and Cameron Todd will represent Australia in the Division 2 Group B competition. Speaking with the Weekender, Canadianborn Schlamp says it’s always an honour to represent his adopted country. “It’s always fun and exciting to play for Australia,” he said. “I’ve done it a few times already and it’s good to hang out with the guys and play with such high quality players.” Australia will be fighting it out for gold against five other countries including Mexico, New Zealand, Bulgaria, Israel and North Korea. According to Schlamp, Australia will go into the round robin competition as favourites. “We have a pretty good chance at a gold medal,” the 35-year-old said.

“We usually play in the division above but were relegated last year after injuries resulted in a few losses. “We are looking to move back up a division if we win.” Schlamp and his Bears teammates will depart for Mexico City next Saturday where they will link up with the rest of the Australian team before competition officially gets underway on Saturday, April 9. “First we’ll have a six day training camp to get to know each other and also get used to the altitude in Mexico City, which will be a challenge,” he said. “We play our first game against the host country Mexico on opening night.” As soon as competition ends, Schlamp and his Australian teammates will head straight home to prepare for the opening round of the 2016 AIHL season. The Sydney Bears will be looking to improve on last season’s seventh place finish when they take on the Canberra Brave in Round 1 at Penrith Ice Palace on Sunday, April 24. “As soon as we land home, we play our first game just a few days later,” Schlamp said. “With some new players joining the team, I’m certainly looking forward to the season ahead.”

he Penrith Cricket Club have pulled off one of the greatest escapes in Sydney Grade Cricket history, to advance to the semi finals of the first grade competition. A remarkable ninth wicket partnership between bowler Ryan Smith and captain Matthew Halse helped the Cats avoid an early exit from the finals against Campbelltown-Camden last weekend. Finishing the regular season in second position, Penrith arrived at Howell Oval last Saturday morning to be faced with a lively wicket. Believing that the surface would quickly flatten out, Penrith won the toss and elected to bat first, only to lose 8/60 during the opening session. Fortunately, life for the batting side started to improve after lunch with Halse and Smith producing a match-winning 172 run ninth wicket partnership. Halse scored 74 runs while number 10 batsman, Smith, hit 98 runs with five fours and five sixes.
