Penrith now has best of the best NATHAN TAYLOR

he Penrith Panthers are officially the envy of every sporting team in Australia following the opening of the $22 million Panthers Rugby League Academy. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was in town for the opening on Wednesday morning and toured the spectacular facility alongside Panthers Chairman David O’Neill, Panthers Executive General Manager of Rugby League Phil Gould as well as a number of other dignitaries. Fully funded by the Panthers Group, the Academy is a $22 million state-of-the-art facility located behind Panthers Leagues Club. It is now the full-time training and development base for Penrith’s senior and junior squads, along with housing Panthers’ rugby league administration. The Academy consists of two full-size allweather training fields, two gymnasiums, hot and cold plunge pools, a 61 seat team auditorium, medical rooms and a number of recreational areas for players and staff. “We believe the Panthers Rugby League Academy is now the best of its kind for any sporting organisation in this country,” Mr Gould said. The facility also caters for the welfare and education of all players, on all levels. The Academy building spans approxi-

T

mately 3400 square metres and the overall site approximately 40,000 square metres. Construction commenced in June last year and was completed three months ahead of schedule. “The Panthers Rugby League Academy is indicative of our steadfast commitment to Penrith and to the game of rugby league, now and in the future,” Panthers Chairman, David O’Neill said. “It will become a source of inspiration for young rugby league players right across the Penrith district and regional areas. More kids than ever before will grow up dreaming of pulling on a Panthers jersey.” Players got their first look around the Academy on Monday before completing their first field session at the new facility on Wednesday afternoon. Panthers captain Matt Moylan couldn’t contain his excitement. “A facility like this will give everyone an extra spring in their step when training and playing games,” he said. “Knowing you’ve got the best facilities around will help us as players going forward. It’s a big incentive.” Prime Minster Malcolm Turnbull, who was a surprise guest at the official opening, was delighted to be in attendance. “This Academy will play a vital role in inspiring and developing the next generation of rugby league stars from across the region,” he said.

The new gym inside the Academy. Inset: Players use the new technology at the centre The Weekender toured the incredible facility on Wednesday and the club is likely to run Members tours at some stage.

The Academy forms part of a wider plan for the future of the Panthers’ site, which includes housing and aged care.

Marcus Cornish A better future

here’s plenty of reasons NOT to go to the footy on any given weekend. No matter how cheap ticket prices are made, it will always be more affordable to purchase a Fox Sports subscription and watch games at home than it will be to take the family to see rugby league live. And if you’re at home, you get to drink full strength beer from your own fridge for a fraction of the price, you can get water from the tap rather than pay $4.80 for a bottle at the stadium and you’ll probably see and hear more thanks to the excellence of the broadcasters. But if you’re like me, there’s nothing that compares with going to Penrith Stadium and watching the footy. League-loving friends of mine support a whole range of clubs but one thing is common – their love for suburban grounds and their loathing of any plans for games to move to big stadiums. Penrith Stadium, Shark Park, Brookvale Oval, Leichhardt Oval. These are the grounds where many people fell in love with rugby league. So what would stop me going to the footy live? Longer beer lines? Bigger toilet queues? Higher ticket prices? None of the above. What would stop me is if Penrith was ever forced to play home games at ANZ or Allianz Stadium as part of the ‘big stadium strategy’ that the NRL and State Government seems to hold so dearly. Thankfully that is unlikely to happen as Penrith seems to be excluded from any push to move games at the present time. There’s also the likelihood that in the medium to long term future, Penrith will

play out of a new stadium that will hopefully be based here. But other clubs will not be so lucky. The Australian reported on Tuesday that the price tag to knock down and re-build Allianz Stadium at Moore Park has now blown out to $1.2 billion. This is getting ridiculous. Nobody I know has ever gone to Allianz Stadium and walked away criticising the experience and wishing it was re-built. Current Allianz tenants Sydney FC, the Sydney Roosters and the NSW Waratahs rarely, if ever, fill the existing stadium. Expanding the capacity from 44,000 to 55,000 or 60,000 seems ludicrous to me no matter how it’s justified or explained, especially considering the giant price tag that goes with it. While the stadium strategy seems to have very little support from the wider public, of more concern is the NRL’s love of the idea.

TUITION THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

“Increased cost, no atmosphere, no community feel – gee, we’re really on to a winner there”

I assure you it is shooting itself in the foot if bigger crowds are the aim – Cronulla, Manly and Penrith fans, for example, simply won’t travel to the allseater stadiums in Homebush or the city. And why should they have to? Despite the perceived poor facilities, the people who pay their hard earned money to turn up to the football have made it quite clear they want to keep going to Brookvale Oval, Shark Park and Penrith Stadium, for example. And I’ll bet you my last dollar that going to a refurbished Allianz Stadium will become a much more expensive exercise for a Manly fan than going to Brookvale Oval. Increased cost, no atmosphere, no community feel – gee, we’re really on to a winner there. And while I understand the argument that hosting games at local, smaller venues costs a significant amount of money, perhaps that’s where the NRL needs to look at spending its money more wisely. Perhaps too the State Government would be better suited looking at what it can do to ensure the success of the already popular smaller venues rather than gambling on big stadiums that will kill rugby league’s tribalism. There’s an argument that ANZ Stadium has been a success for both the Bulldogs and Rabbitohs. True story, but it doesn’t hide the fact that they play in a stadium that lacks heart and soul and is so regularly criticised by all rugby league fans. I fear that sometimes, those telling us what we apparently want and need have spent so much time in corporate boxes that they’ve forgotten about what the average punter actually wants.

Labor wants a positive housing plan Opposition says its policy would help local people break the rental cycle DALE DRINKWATER

fter seven years of looking to buy her own home, South Penrith resident Rika Kuala is hoping a change in Government policy will allow for her big break. As a single mum paying for her son’s university education, there’s not much left each week for Ms Kuala to put away to get ahead of increasing house prices and competitive investors. Ms Kuala said in the current market, the dream of buying her first home is over. “At the moment there is no dream for me. There is no way I can buy a house because investors have made the prices go up,” she said. Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen spoke with Ms Kuala at her rented home on Wednesday morning about the need to reform negative gearing and the capital tax discount. “The policy is not only to provide Government revenue to fund hospitals and schools, but to give people like Rika a more level playing field,” he said. “At the moment, if Rika went to an auction to bid for a house, there’d be investors there. The investor has negative gearing, and a capital gains tax discount and Rika’s got nothing.”

Photo: Megan Dunn Mr Bowen said more than half of property purchases in Australia are by investors, and just one in seven are first home buyers, but the balance needs to be fixed. “That’s the ultimate answer to housing affordability, to make it easier for Rika to get into the market,” he said. Labor candidate for Lindsay, Emma Husar said homes in western Sydney are selling fast, then being leased out.

“The investors are buying and purely for the investment, these houses are not being taken up by families that need accommodation and to break out of that rental market,” she said. “I’d rather see the government help people into their first home rather than help people buy their seventh or eighth.” Labor, if elected, would introduce the policy on July 1, 2017.

man has somehow escaped being killed in a horrible single-vehicle crash in Mulgoa last weekend. Police and paramedics were called to Mulgoa Road at around 8pm last Friday after a motorist located a male suffering injuries laying at the side of the road. Both services were quickly on the scene and paramedics began treating the injured man for multiple abrasions and other minor injuries. he came from or when he was injured. Police investigated the surrounding area and found the Mitsubishi Mirage hatchback wrapped around a tree on a nearby property. The vehicle had suffered significant damage and appeared to have collided with the tree at high speed. After investigations were carried out it was determined that the injured man was the alleged driver of the vehicle at the time of the collision. Once treated at the roadside, he was loaded into an ambulance and transported to Westmead Hospital. Investigations are continuing.

80 people involved in Lethbridge Street brawl Units from the Public Order and Riot Squad and Traffic and Highway Patrol Command also responded. “The female officer who was struck in the head did not sustain any injuries,” Inspector Penninkilampi said. “She’s very lucky, but this was a gutless attack on a police officer. “She’s a very capable Inspector; one on one she’s more than capable of looking after herself, it’s just a gutless attack being struck in the head that way.” Initial inquiries made in regards to how the brawl started indicate a large group of people attempted to gain entry to a party uninvited at a home on Lethbridge Street, which led to the groups fighting. “We are very anxious and very keen to identify the person responsible for this,” Inspector Penninkilampi said. “We’re asking the public to come forward with any information that may lead to the identification of not only the person responsible for her assault but any person that was involved in the incident in the street.” A 21-year-old man was arrested as a result of the brawl and was taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with affray. He was granted conditional bail to appear before Penrith Local Court on Monday, April 18.

enrith Police are calling for witnesses to come forward after a female Inspector was allegedly assaulted while responding to a brawl in Penrith last weekend. At about 10.30pm on Sunday, March 27, police from Penrith Local Area Command were called to Lethbridge and Colless Streets in Penrith following reports of a large group of people fighting. On arrival, officers observed up to 80 people in the street, with many punching and kicking each other. While attempting to arrest a man for assault, a female Inspector was allegedly hit with a stick on the side of her head. “She was attacked from behind by an unknown person who struck her to the head,” Inspector Kai Penninkilampi said. “She continued to struggle with the male under her arrest on the ground when she was then approached by three further aggressive males who she had to deter using her capsicum spray.” The Inspector called for urgent assistance at the scene on Sunday with nearby units from Penrith, St Marys, Mt Druitt, the Blue Mountains, and Hawkesbury all able to respond.

JADE ALIPRANDI

man shot and killed outside a Stafford Street home in Kingswood yesterday morning was a member of the Rebels motorcycle club, it’s understood. Just after midnight on Wednesday, March 30, emergency services were called to the Stafford Street property after reports of gun shots fired in a suspected drive-by shooting. Initial reports suggest a neighbour heard up to five gun shots before hearing a car speed off. The number of shots fired had not been confirmed by police at the time the Weekender went to print. Police say they understand the man was standing in the driveway at the time he was shot, with a car, not further described, seen fleeing from the scene a short time later. “Police were called in relation to a number of shots fired at the residence,” Superintendent Greg Peters said. “We are appealing to any witnesses or anyone who may have heard gun shots or seen the vehicle to contact us at the station or on Crime Stoppers.” Police said the victim, Michael Davey, was known to them. “There are many lines of inquiry we will be making but it’s early stages in our investigation,” Superintendent Peters said on Wednesday. The shooting is being investigated by Strikeforce Glenorchy, a mix of detectives from St Marys Local Area Command and the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad. A large knife was found by news crews about 50 metres from the driveway of where the shooting occurred, with police unable to confirm if it was linked to the case.

A

“A knife has been located near the scene and whether that has got anything to do with it, we don’t know at this stage,” Superintendent Peters said. A neighbour of the man, Karen Riwaicouch, didn’t find out what had happened until she woke up at 7am yesterday morning. “I noticed the camera crews and that police had roped off the area – I didn’t hear anything at the time of the incident though,” she told the Weekender in disbelief.

Police on the scene of the incident “I didn’t really know him well but I knew he was around my age. “It’s just really scary and shocking that it can happen so close to home, especially with my two young children here.” The man was treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics but died at the scene. Police established a crime scene which was being examined by forensic and ballistic specialists on Wednesday. “I feel for his family and I really hope he didn’t have any little ones,” Ms Riwaicouch said. The Rebels posted a tribute on their Sydney Facebook page, offering their condolences to Mr Davey’s family. Contact St Marys Police on 9677 7499 with any information.

Health shop rises from the ashes

Anger over health funding

Fire still being investigated but business continues for Body Beyond Belief JADE ALIPRANDI

he owner of Body Beyond Belief in Penrith said he won’t give up on his business after a fire tore through the premises late last week. Being treated as suspicious, the fire was reported to emergency services at about 1.35am last Thursday, March 24. Fire and Rescue NSW officers attended the scene and extinguished the blaze a short time later, with the front of the shop left completely destroyed. Director of the company, Stan Turek, had just recently finished renovating the premises. “I was gutted but I was more in shock than anything else – I didn’t know how to react,” he said. The business was at Shop 4 at 100 Henry Street but Mr Turek was able to secure a new location, just four doors down, and managed to re-open this week. Around 30 people were at the premises on Good Friday to get the clean up process started. “I still can’t believe how many people came down to help me, especially when they should have been with their families for Easter,” he said. “Everyone really helped to keep my chin up and were so amazing.”

A protest at Nepean Hospital last week DALE DRINKWATER

nions, nurses, Labor and the Greens have banded together at Nepean Hospital to protest against cuts to health services. It’s reported the Federal Government has backed down on a deal with State Governments to fund 50 per cent of growth in hospital activity, a difference of $57 billion. The rally was in response to the eight year cut, that will put more pressure on an already struggling Nepean Hospital. Registered nurse, Laura Robson, said Federal Government cuts have already caused a great deal of stress in emergency departments and other areas. “The emergency department is starting to treat their patients in chairs because there aren’t enough beds and ambulances aren’t able to get their patients off stretchers,” she said. Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott said the figures being claimed by unions and the opposition are not based on actual figures. She said Federal funding for NSW hospitals increased by seven per cent last year.

Photo: Megan Dunn Officers attached to Penrith Local Area Command are currently investigating the fire, with witnesses or anyone with information urged to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers. Mr Turek remains devastated. “I never wanted anything like this to happen and it feels like someone wants to take it away from me but I’m not going to give up – I’m here to support people and

make a change in their lives,” Mr Turek said. “It’s amazing to hear stories from the community about how important the shop is to them and how I helped change their lives – that’s worth more to me than money, I just love what I do.” Mr Turek has several Body Beyond Belief shops in both NSW and Queensland.

L AW a n d O R D E R From The Courts: Your Complete Legal Wrap COMPILED BY ALENA HIGGINS. OUR COURT REPORTING IS SPONSORED BY LOCAL LAW FIRM COMPLETE LEGAL & CONVEYANCING.

Man disqualified from driving after November incident

A 39-year-old man has had his licence disqualified for six months after pleading guilty to drink driving. Ross Peachey fronted Penrith Local Court on Tuesday where he was convicted of mid-range drink driving and slapped with a $400 fine. The court heard the father-of-four was the sole occupant of the vehicle when he failed a random breath test on November 21, 2015. Magistrate Stephen Corry reminded Mr Peachey that there were many factors that affected a reading and the safest thing to do was not get behind the wheel. “There is plenty of publicity... if you are going to drink you don’t drive,” he said.

Man fined $300 after drug possession charge

A man has been hit with a fine after pleading guilty to drug possession. Terry Lee appeared before Penrith Local Court on Tuesday after he was found in possession of cannabis leaf mixed with tobacco on January 24. He was convicted and fined $300 and Magistrate Stephen Corry ordered the drugs to be destroyed.

Man turned to “black market” for sleeping pills

Tony Challita has been placed on a good behaviour bond after pleading guilty to possession of unprescribed prescription drugs. Mr Challita told Penrith Local Court on Wednesday he had tried unsuccessfully to get the sleeping tablets off his doctor

so he turned to the “black market” to acquire the drugs instead. “That’s not really an option you should have taken, as you’re well aware,” Magistrate Dorelle Pinch said. He was sentenced to a 12-month good behaviour bond and ordered to remain under the supervision of Community Corrections during that time.

25-year-old avoids criminal record despite drug driving

A young engineer has avoided a criminal record despite pleading guilty to driving under the influence of drugs. Nayan Kumar, 25, faced Penrith Local Court on Wednesday where he was sentenced to a 12-month good behaviour bond. The court heard it had been more than 24 hours since Mr Kumar had smoked cannabis when he was caught driving under the influence of drugs during a random drug test. Magistrate Dorelle Pinch took into account that it was at the lower end of the offence and Mr Kumar’s first matter before the Court when handing down her decision. “I hope this is a wake up call for him,” Magistrate Pinch said. The matter was disposed without a conviction being recorded.

Man pays the price for not wearing his glasses

A 53-year-old man has been hit with a hefty fine for failing to wear his prescription glasses while driving. Gary Thomas Delaney appeared before Penrith Local Court on Wednesday where he was also convicted of mid-range drink

driving. The court heard Mr Delaney blew 0.146 and was found driving without his glasses during a random breath test after he attended a party in Penrith. Magistrate Dorelle Pinch noted the serious bearing on public safety. “Everyone expects you to be able to see at an appropriate level,” she said. The defendant was disqualified from driving for six months, fined $750 for failing to comply with his licence conditions and handed a 18-month good behaviour bond.

“Good weekend” turns into expensive lesson

Shane Owen Hearn has been placed on a good behaviour bond and fined $300 after being found in possession of a prohibited drug. Mr Hearn fronted Penrith Local Court on Wednesday where he told the court he had brought the 1.16 grams of amphetamines to “have a good weekend”. The court heard the drugs were detected on Mr Hearn by a sniffer dog in a restricted area of a railway station.

Apologetic mother keeps her driver’s license

A mother-of-two has escaped disqualification despite recording a mid-range drink driving reading. Maria Alejandra Rinzler was pulled over by police on February 20 after officers noticed her taking longer than normal to enter a roundabout. A contrite Ms Rinzler told Penrith Local Court on Wednesday she normally doesn’t drink and she was “very sorry” for her “irresponsible” behaviour. Magistrate Dorelle Pinch took into ac-

count that it was her first major offence before the Court and it was at the lower end of mid-range before sentencing her to a two-year good behaviour bond.

False document case adjourned until May 10

A man has pleaded not guilty to four charges of making false documents. David Gerald Deakes appeared before Penrith Local Court on Tuesday to fight the charges. The matter was adjourned to May 10, 2016.

Marusic refused bail; will front court again on April 5

The lengthy rap sheet of Simon Marusic has seen his request for bail refused. Mr Marusic appeared via videolink at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday and will remain behind bars after failing to attend court on March 24. The court heard Mr Marusic has a track record of failing to appear and breaching bail, as well as a history of “dishonestytype offences”. The matter was adjourned to April 5.

Man “simply forgot” to report to police station

Anthony Wayne South will remain on bail despite breaching his bail conditions. Mr South appeared via videolink at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday. The court heard Mr South did not provide an excuse for failing to report to Mount Druitt Police, except to tell his solicitor he “simply forgot on this occasion”. “It is important to continue to report or you may find your bail revoked,” Magistrate Stephen Corry said.

Police search for witnesses after two girls were approached at St Marys Police are appealing for public assistance after two girls were approached in St Marys on Monday. About 5pm on Monday, two nine-yearold girls were riding bicycles along Maple

Street when a black vehicle stopped nearby. Police have been told a male driver lowered the window and spoke with the girls before driving away.

Officers from St Marys Local Area Command are investigating the incident and would like to speak with the man who may be able to assist with inquiries. The man is described as being of Cauca-

sian appearance in his early 20s. He was last seen wearing a blue baseball cap and white t-shirt. Anyone with information is urged to contact St Marys Police.

Penrith: Taser used in scuffle

A man was charged for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest on the weekend after he got in a scuffle with police. At about 8.20pm on Saturday, March 26, police were called to an address on Rawson Avenue in Penrith. When police arrived, they found a man in the backyard who appeared to be having a seizure. When they went to help, they were approached by somebody who they believed to be the owner of the property. Paramedics were called to assist but a 29-year-old man began to hinder their efforts at helping the man on the ground. Police got in a scuffle with the man and after he hit one in the face, police disengaged and detained him with the use of a taser.

What is self defence?

the western weekender » Thursday, March 31, 2016

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

running away. This case is one of great interest to the community for obvious reasons. In particular, there appears to be a common principal amongst every day Australians that a person should be able to defend his or her family and their property. The question for the Court to consider is whether or not Batterham has gone too far in doing so. Despite the eventual outcome, this loss of life is tragic for both Slater-Dickson‘s family and for the family of Batterham. If Batterham is convicted of murder he will spend a significant period of time in jail, which some may perceive as an injustice in circumstances where the alleged trespass that led to the offence was thrust upon him by the alleged criminal conduct of Slater-Dickson. There are no specific details available to us to form a definitive opinion as to whether or not Batterham’s conduct constituted self-defence at this stage. It is likely that a jury of 12 ordinary citizens will determine Batterham’s fate if the matter goes to trial.

Ben Batterham of Newcastle has been charged with the murder of Ricky Slater-Dickson arising out of an altercation that occurred at Batterham’s home on Saturday morning. It is alleged that Batterham discovered the deceased in his home at 3.30am and proceeded to chase him from the residence and assault him, resulting in his death. Social commentators are saying that this is a simple case of a man defending his “castle”. It is not so simple however. For an act to constitute self-defence under the Law the act must be done to defend a person (from violence for example) and it must be perceived to be a “reasonable response” in the circumstances. The problem faced by Batterham in this case is that it appears that he may have chased Slater-Dickson from the home before the assault occurred. If this is the case, and Slater-Dickson was retreating, then there was arguably no threat from which Batterham needed to defend himself or his family once SlaterDickson had left the property and was

Business owners frustrated at series of break-ins The team at Flower Power Garden Centre in Penrith are calling out to the community for help after a series of break and enters have seen over $3000 worth of goods stolen. Over the past two months, the business has had three break-ins and 11 items stolen, a major loss for the store. Loss Prevention Manager, Joshua Nicol, said he is keen to find the culprits after the

last break in on Friday, March 25. “It’s definitely extremely frustrating when these people have no regard for the law or for what people have worked hard for in terms of building the business from scratch,” he told the Weekender. “As a result of the last occurrence on Friday we are upgrading security controls at the site but the cost it’s going to take to upgrade is large – time and money is

definitely the biggest frustration when it comes to break-ins.” Store Manager, David Simpson, has seen a few break-ins over his 15 years at the store, but said this series is the last straw. “It’s definitely very frustrating, absolutely,” he said. “We put everything we can into the business to make it run smoothly so it’s disheartening when this happens.

The World’s Most Efficient Gas Log Space Heaters

“To have three break-ins over the past eight weeks has seen it get to a frustrating point now.” Officers from St Marys Local Area Command have confirmed they are looking into each incident. “We are appealing for anyone with information about the incidents to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” a police spokesperson said.

The weekly views of Penrith’s Mayor

Student Exchange Penrith is a dynamic, well-connected city that has strong international relationships. Penrith’s longest standing international relationship is with Fujieda in Japan. A sister city agreement between the two cities was signed in November 1984 where amongst other things, both cities pledged to establish ‘a lasting and friendly relationship’. Penrith and Fujieda have undertaken a diverse range of programs, activities and exchanges and many close friendships have been forged between people of the two cities. Without doubt the most enduring and successful program has been the annual student exchange ambassador program. For the past 29 years this program, coordinated between Penrith and Fujieda has been the major initiative between the two cities and like the relationship this program continues to go from strength to strength. Applications are now being called for students to represent Penrith on the 2016 exchange program to Fujieda for approximately 21 days around the NSW school holidays at the end of Term 3 in September/October. Over the years, approximately 230

students from Penrith and Japan have had the opportunity to experience each other’s culture first hand and that has had long lasting positive effects on the students’ overall development and in a number of instances been a major influence on their career paths. Many students have commented on their return from Fujieda that the exchange was a truly life changing experience. When in Japan, students attend school with their host, travel to shrines and temples and go on an excursion to Hiroshima. Students get to experience Japanese culture, learn about the Japanese way of life and share their Australian life and culture with Japanese students in return. To be eligible to participate in the program students must live and/or attend high school within the Penrith Local Government Area and be aged between 15 and 19 years. To find out more about information about the Penrith International Friendship Committee and the Fujieda student exchange visit penrithcity.nsw. gov.au or call 4732 7736.

ADVERTORIAL

Tasmania Trip Tasmania lends itself to the tourism trade. Flanked with the cold southern sea currents, it has unique farming opportunities on both land and off shore. The history of our fledgling nation sank deep roots in a morbidly beautiful way. Tasmania has a scenery that treats the eyes to masses of colour and prehistoric water ways, forests and gorges. What remains today is a mix of scenic touring, gastronomic delights and photographic opportunities galore. Hobart is the perfect place to venture out for the weekend. Lodged between the Derwent River and Mount Wellington, it lends itself to scenic shots for your memory file. A drive through the Huon Valley is also a must. The Apple and Heritage museum will open your eyes to a few of the apple industries little fascinations. Geeveston streets are also littered with wooden statues of people. Yes, the wooden tributes to the people surrounding the area. In between browsing through the lolly shop and the other attractions there, take a minute to give the wooden people of Geeveston a hello. Bruny Island is the island off the island off the island of Australia. Accessible by ferry, we are going to take the whole day to meander its length. Eating and drinking all the way. Bruny Island is home to an assortment of gourmet treats. Oyster farms, smokehouses, cheese factories and of course the required winery. Port Arthur stirs thoughts and imaginations that are a paradox of morbid beauty. You cannot walk through the historic site of Port Arthur without feeling the presence of a bloody history.Take a cruise over to the Isle of the Dead – the resting place of over a thousand known and unknown people that didn’t make it out. Tasmania also is the breeding ground for many many diverse crops. Tasmanians grow great berries. Strawberries, red berries, rasberries, blackberries – anything with berries! Try picking your own or just waltz on in to the berry farms that have ice cream and berry pies, milkshakes and pastries.

Illawarra Airshow Show Fast approaching is the Illawarra Airshow – known as Wings over Illawarra. The airshow is a great mix of automobile and aeronautical displays. It’s a great day for kids and parents alike with the opportunity to clamber into the sometimes cramped cockpits of old historical fighters. Usually on display are the ladies of the skies such as Connie, famous for its triple tail design. As you take a walk down the aisles you can almost see the passengers being tended to by their 1950’s hostesses, complete with scarves and hats. Perhaps the grunt of the Mirage fighter jet is more appealing to you. The noise and the smell of jet fuel enhances the airshow day. As the music of the jet engine symphony reverberates through the air, the crowd gets excited for the next fly by. Not all is airborne though. Despite not having wings, the hatchback powered by a jet engine is as entertaining as ever. It can tear up the tarmac as fast as its little wheels can carry it and the crowd is cheering it on as they snort its av-gas. If you’re taking the family, it is an all day event with plenty of kid friendly displays and activities. The outside paddock is the parking lot for all those heritage and not so heritage cars that are someones pride and joy. Shining and gleaming they demand that you take a closer look at them. Today is THE day not to forget that camera.

Council’s circus ban Penrith Council’s decision to ban circuses with exotic animals from Council land will accomplish nothing as privately owned lands are not affected (Council takes a stand, Weekender March 24). But I suppose it helps the PC brigade sleep a bit better at night. KEITH EVERETT, WERRINGTON COUNTY

Animals well cared for Responsible animal professionals are all about animal welfare. Circus animals are loved and well cared for. Training with positive reinforcement is enrichment and an important part of their mental and physical stimulation. The animals thrive on the rapport and relationship it has with its trainer/ caretaker. There is nothing like the human/animal bond. Partners in life, loved forever. MONICA WELDE, VIA WEBSITE

Ban is unfair Ridiculous! Stopping the circus performing is just another thing that is being taken away from us. All the animals at the circus look healthy and well cared for and

their business is dependant on having healthy happy animals to perform for viewers. People need to get off their high horses and fight a necessary battle. This clearly isn’t one worth tax dollars. Look into something that is necessary. ANDREA, VIA WEBSITE

Not happy with decision Pathetic decision based on pure ignorance. How arrogant of Cr Tormey to state that children shouldn’t have the opportunity to see animals in circuses. Parents have the democratic right to make that decision without her intervention. The whole argument about “exploiting wild animals” is tired rhetoric from animal rights groups. Firstly, they’re not “wild” animals – they’ve been born in Australia for many generations and are dependent on human care. Secondly, the argument that they are used for entertainment has no relevance to animal welfare. These animals can still receive better care than a zoo animal that is used for educational purposes, for instance. Did Cr Tormey bother visiting the circus

and seeing the welfare of the animals? I assume not, because this was a rushed ban without any consultation whatsoever. Throughout my childhood I had many opportunities to marvel at the bond between circus trainers and their animals. It is a bond which shows what can be achieved when man/woman and beast work together in harmony. I assume Cr Tormey was deprived of this experience as a child and has therefore developed an ignorant prejudice against circuses, but that doesn’t mean she should deprive every other child in Penrith of the chance to enjoy an animal circus. Locals pay their rates for the provision of services, not the denial of wholesome family entertainment. MICHAEL, VIA WEBSITE

Council’s ban is right One day, hopefully in the not too distant future, people will learn to become participants in animal conservation instead of expecting to be entertained by them in captivity after paying a few measly dollars. Lismore and Gold Coast banned circuses on council

email: news@westernweekender.com.au post: Suite 2, 42-44 Abel Street, Jamisontown 2750

land in 2009. Brisbane hasn’t yet. I remember a horrible day driving home from work when two llamas escaped at a circus at Robina. Who was out there trying to round them up? Not the owners, they hadn’t even noticed. Their enclosure was not secure. They were killed, hit by passing cars in a suburban area. Enough said. VICTORIA ALESANDRO, VIA WEBSITE

Animals not for our entertainment 100 per cent the right thing to do and, honestly, private properties should be taking a stand and banning it as well. Wild animals are not there for our entertainment. Then people wonder why they get attacked by the animals. Anyone who isn’t on side with these changes get yourself educated, we need to respect the animals and nature. MEL KROEGEL, VIA FACEBOOK

Future of journalism I read and liked Troy Dodds’ editorial in last week’s Weekender (Editor’s Desk, March 24). While I agree with his comments regard-

ing the need for quality journalism, I am increasingly frustrated and annoyed by the rubbish that often passes for journalism. Those standards should include a lack of bias, accuracy, relevance and a willingness to ignore so-called news that is in reality hyping of rubbish that the publication or writer chooses to call news. The problem I do have is with the apparent willingness of the major media outlets (print/web and TV) to promote the rubbish that masquerades as reality TV and to continually throw up the type of stories that you would normally find in the sensationalist women’s magazines. As well the sensationalising of the stories and often misleading headlines to me show a lack of integrity. It seems to me that either the editors are setting standards that are so low you can trip over them or the “reporters” simply want to fill columns with whatever is easiest to find. What I wouldn’t give for all the media to be balanced and fair, to have standards higher than their shoes and to exercise their discretion when choosing what to print and what to ignore. Time to change smoke alarm batteries End of Daylight Savings time this weekend prompts important reminder from local fire crews JADE ALIPRANDI

he end of Daylight Savings presents the perfect opportunity to remind people to change their smoke alarm battery. The Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery national awareness day is this Sunday, April 3, and is a vital reminder to Penrith residents to change their alarm batteries. Station Commander at Regentville Fire and Rescue, Phil Marsh, said residents need to be more vigilant when it comes to their smoke alarms. “Batteries only have a limited shelf life,” he said. “We go out to calls where the smoke alarm isn’t functioning and that can be avoided.”

T

It’s a legal requirement for all NSW residents to have at least one working smoke alarm inside the home. The upcoming awareness day aims to highlight the importance of general fire safety and the role smoke alarms play in house fires. “We are constantly doing community awareness events to help people understand the importance of a working smoke alarm and also create awareness around changing the batteries,” Mr Marsh said. Smoke alarms detect smoke well before any sleeping occupant would, providing critical seconds to save lives and property. Mr Marsh said Daylight Savings should prompt people to change the alarm battery. “You put your clocks back so why not change the battery in your smoke alarm,” he said.

Art exchange takes place Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown presented the latest artwork from Fujieda, Japan to Grays Lane Childcare Centre last week – an exchange that has taken place for more than 15 years. “The art exchange program is a mutual exchange of information and artworks between children in our two countries and an opportunity for young children to learn about another culture,” Councillor McKeown said. “The paintings were excitedly received by the Penrith children and will be displayed during Children’s Week so the broader community can also appreciate them.” The Fujieda paintings were developed by children from 22 kindergartens in Fujieda and depicted their families, their community and things they like to do. An accompanying letter from Fujieda said the Penrith children’s artworks sent over earlier had been displayed to about 5,000 people in Fujieda. Penrith and Fujieda have pledged to establish a lasting friendly relationship between the cities and broaden the range of cultural, sporting, education and economic exchange programs between them.

A gift for living

Initiative aims to save lives In response to an alarming increase in the number of drownings in Australia, a coalition of like-minded organisations has pooled their resources to launch April Pools Day, a campaign squarely targeted at increasing CPR-preparedness in the community. Poolwerx, the architects behind April Pools Day, conducted research and found 75 per cent of people surveyed felt they did not have the necessary basic CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) skills to save a life in an emergency. “That’s a staggering and very sad statistic and one that urgently needs to improve because learning CPR is so easy – any dummy can do it – pun intended,” said Anthony Fil from Poolwerx. “People claim to know the basics but they are not confident enough to apply it in an actual emergency and we felt something needed to be done to change this.” Mr Fil said the aim of the inaugural April Pools Day launched on April 1, supported by Laurie Lawrence’s Kids Alive Do The Five program and St John Ambulance, was to encourage Australians to stop kidding around and get serious about learning CPR. “Research has shown that a child is four times more likely to survive a drowning if their parents know CPR and start immediately,” he said. “April Pools Day aims to make it easy for people to update these skills by giving them a refresher course on the basic skills for resuscitating babies, young children and adults. We hope this event will contribute to saving lives.”

If you’re aged 50-74 you’ll be sent a free bowel cancer screening kit. The kit is simple to use and can detect bowel cancer before any symptoms appear. Around 80 Australians die of bowel cancer every week, but if detected early, up to 90% of cases can be successfully treated. So be sure to complete and return your kit. It’s a gift that could save your life. If you’re over 74 talk to your GP. By 2020 people aged 50-74 will receive a kit every two years.

eet Penrith’s freshest graduates, who have just completed their Certificate II in Horticulture from TAFE Western Sydney. With their new qualifications, Greg Rich, Steven Bellamy and Fiona Hinchliffe are skilled-up and empowered to undergo higher qualifications and seek higher paying work. The talented trio are three of five people with a disability who have been undertaking a special three-term course with TAFE Western Sydney onsite at the Thorndale Foundation. “We loved going out and meeting new people, and loved learning new things,” Mr Rich said. “It means we can do maintenance on more equipment.” Ms Hinchliffe made a special thanks to her horticulture teacher, Colin Hunt, who worked closely with the group adapting the learning and assessment to suit their needs. Mr Hunt said he doesn’t feel he teaches them differently, but focuses on a special way of assessing their knowledge at the end.

“That’s the thing, they’re just people like anybody else. The teaching is done handson, they’re doing stuff on a job, with me and around the site,” he said. “When it comes to assessment, the way we ask the questions and get them to show understanding is different.” Mr Hunt said it was fantastic teaching students who actually wanted to learn, and is proud of their efforts. “They have a drive to want to learn and want to know things, it’s great,” he said. Senior Training Consultant at TAFE Western Sydney, Robyn Lambert, said the training program is about getting people acknowledged for the skills they already have. “These graduates were already working here doing ground work like garden care and lawn maintenance, but generally they don’t get the opportunity to participate in the same training a regular student would,” she said. She said the program aims to take graduates as far as they can toward a full qualification, and see how much they can do compared to a fully able person. “Ideally, we can develop students to a certain point where they can increase how much they earn or move into open employment,” she said.

Free Trade Portal opens up new opportunities for exporters

Beauty of a budgie: Easter Show honours for bird lover James DALE DRINKWATER

ecades of passion for James Matthews has paid off after he won Reserve Grand Champion Budgerigar at the Sydney Royal Easter Show this year. But as budgies don’t win cash prizes, four years competing at the Easter Show isn’t about winning money for the St Clair resident – it’s all about the prestige. “I got Grand Champion the last two years, I was going for the trifecta, but ended up Reserve, he said. Since he was at school, Mr Matthews has been breeding and showing birds, and over the years has figured out what it takes to have that award-winning budgie. “I joined the local bird club at Tamworth when I was 13, and have been competing since then, he said. He said to have a prize-winning budgerigar, they need to have good showmanship and a nice fluffy head. “There’s a few different things like colour, size, style, the outline of the spots on it chest, he said. “You could have a good bird but if it plays up and jumps around it doesn’t look good, they’ve got to be able to let their head feathers go and make their head look even bigger than it really is.

DALE DRIANKWATER

new Free Trade Portal has been launched in Emu Plains, that will boost business by making it easier to export to other countries. Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott and Minister for Trade and Investment Steven Ciobo met with Clive White last week, founder of Emu Plains based Ensitech, that is currently exporting to 15 countries. Ensitech exports Mr White’s invention, the TIG Brush Steel Weld Cleaning System, that prepares, cleans and protects rust and welding marks using modern technologies and solutions.

A

With plans to expand exporting to Mexico, Chile, Peru and Brazil, Mr White said Australia’s level of education and resources like the Free Trade (FTA) Portal will make it much easier to do so. “I think we’re ideally placed to add huge amounts of value and export our expertise to the rest of the world, he said. Mr Ciobo said with the FTA Portal, the opportunities for Australia’s small to medium enterprises like Ensitech have never been better. “Many businesses are looking to export but are uncertain about how to go about it and whether they are price competitive. The new FTA Portal seeks to answer those questions, he said.

Photo: Megan Dunn Mr Matthews is also Chair for the Penrith Valley branch of the Budgerigar Society of NSW, that meets at Llandilo once a month. “We have an annual show at the start of November and we take some birds along to some meetings, he said. 0 kilometres in seven days – rain, hail or shine. That’s the length that Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott is walking to raise awareness and money for the Luke Priddis Foundation. Ms Scott’s Walk for Autism will begin on Monday, April 4, at Penrith Westfield, and loop around the Lindsay electorate for 79 kilometres, finishing up on April 10 at the Fitness for Autism Run at Jamison Park. The community is encouraged to join the walk that will stop at schools along the way to help children better understand and accept autism spectrum disorders. “I think it’s one of those challenges we don’t know enough about,” Ms Scott said. “One of the challenges you see with autism is that getting into early intervention services is crucial. How we work together as a whole community to help all children I think is a really important thing.” Ms Scott said Lindsay is one of the youngest electorates in Australia, and supporting its young families through organisations like the Luke Priddis Foundation is key. “There are several organisations that do great work and the Luke Priddis Foundation is one of those organisations,” she said. “It not only enables a child to live their best possible life, but tackles support of young people and families and that’s why this is a really great organisation.”

Interactive Formation Dancing

People often confuse square dancing with line and bush dancing with check shirts and hay bales, but it is nothing like that at all. A new form of modern square dancing, Interactive Formation dancing is so much more. The contemporary Interactive Formation Dancing is simply a combination of different formations to an enormous variety of music. Interactive Formation Dancing provides people of all ages with moderate physical activity and mental stimulation, all in a friendly social atmosphere. Interactive Formation dance caller and teacher and President of the Square and Round Dance Association of NSW, David Todd, said he hopes to promote square dancing to the broader community and gain lots of new dancers to this wonderful activity. “Everybody has an old perception of what square dancing is, but it’s really fun to do,” he said. “The only thing square about modern square dancing is the starting formation, and then after we start, we dance in formations of various shapes. You don’t know what’s coming next, because the dance is choreographed by the square dance caller.” Mr Todd said each dance is tailored specifically to suit the age group they are working with at the time. “If we are working with kids we use music that’s related to them, if we are working with 40 to 50 years olds we use earlier music to suit,” he said. “With high school kids, we use music such as hip hop. A lot of rap music has a repetitive beat, and in square dancing all we need is two/four and four/four timed music.” Mr Todd started to teach square dancing at Blaxland East Primary School in 1999 as part of their PDHPE program. He now teaches square dancing at a number of lower Blue Mountains primary schools, introducing modern square dancing to hundreds of young Australians. Do yourself a favour and take the opportunity to try something different that will give you great satisfaction in a fun social environment. For more information on times and locations, contact David Todd on 0411 888 515 for Blaxland East classes, or Ralph Jenner on 0419 471 944 for Glenmore Park.

HISTORY

Turning back Time

COMPILED BY DALE DRINKWATER

Modelled on history

I

n the 1970s, the Sydney Society of Model Engineers (SSME) found a permanent home in its best location yet – Luddenham. The Society has been educating and entertaining families across the city for 110 years, and is the oldest model-engineering club in Australia. The passion and commitment of the SSME members has made it the “oldest continuously operating model engineering club in the southern hemisphere”, with some reports suggesting even in the world. As far back as 1906, members would

assemble in a home in Summer Hill to deliberate, watch demonstrations and conduct tests on shared and contested engineering ideas for models. After their first public exhibition of model trains, cars and boats in 1912, the club found itself seeking larger premises and kept moving to bigger halls across Sydney. The halls were not suffice for the large amount of model trains and boats, and the club was forced to operate meetings between a location at Moore Park and members’ homes. In desperation, members sought other avenues to demonstrate their engineer-

ing ideas, such as convincing the park superintendent at Centennial Park testing a model boat in the pond wouldn’t disturb the birds. With no avail, the club finally found land in Ashfield in 1932 for just five pounds in rent a year. The opening of the new premises was so successful the club decided to purchase the land at a price of just 95 pounds, and from there they continued to meet every Saturday for the next 40 years. Much larger premises were warranted again in the 1960s, and after 10 years of hard work, the club finally sold their Ashfield property and headed west to Luddenham to open a 25 acre model park. In 1970, the property cost the club $27,000, and volunteers worked tirelessly to get the park ready for opening by October 1971. The park was large enough to provide the space for tether cars, boats, a slot car track, a HO gauge railway, both ground level and elevated rail track, and airspace for radio control flying. Since opening its Luddenham premises, the SSME has been home to a range of major events in the modelling world including, the Australian Association of Live Steam Convention in 1981, the World Model Race Car Championships in both 1986 and 1998, and then in 2006 hosted the 50th live steam convention. To this day, the SSME’s large model park remains the envy of other model societies, especially as it is open for members to use any day of the year. The park is open on the very last Sunday of every month to the rest of the community, excluding December, for hundreds of people to ride the trains and play with the slot car track. What are your memories of the park? Email news@westernweekender.com.au

Remember when... 1960s technology at its finest. The Warragamba Dam had its own working model in its old Visitor’s Centre, for people to get a bird’s eye view of the megastructure. The model became too worn and fragile to be dismantled and relocated to the new Visitor’s Centre.

One year ago...

After a long campaign, the Weekender’s March 31, 2015, edition announced a State Election win for Labor candidate for Londonderry Prue Car. Ms Car was the first Londonderry candidate since 1991 to be elected into State Parliament without being in the political party that forms Government. Ms Car secured 58 per cent of the votes after preferences, earning an impressive 13.9 per cent swing to the Australian Labor Party, that she believed gave her a mandate to deliver. We also congratulated Liberal Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres and Liberal Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies on their election wins. It’s been a year since local business owners called on Penrith Council to prioritise the repair of a vehicle access ramp to the car park above Trade Secret, ahead of a CBD park. Council deemed the ramps unsafe and closed them until further notice, and 12 months later they are still shut off. Western Sydney University launched their new state-of-the-art library at their Kingswood campus, with the NSW Governor, His Excellency the Honourable David Hurley in attendance.

MATCH PREVIEW

EELS

TROY DODDS @troydodds

F

our matches, four close finishes, three that didn’t go Penrith’s way. The Panthers’ first month of the competition has been a classic glass half full, glass half empty scenario. If you prefer your glass half full, you’d be happy that Penrith have led every match they’ve played at some stage in the second half and have been in a match-winning position – proving they have at least the nucleus of a winning football team. You’d also be happy that they’ve managed to be so close to victory in all of their matches despite not having arguably their best player in Matt Moylan on the park. If you’re a glass half empty kind of person, you’d be disappointed that again

so much promise has the potential to deteriorate into another average season. You’d be extremely worried about Penrith’s inability to close out matches that they have every right to win. Whatever glass you’re choosing to follow at the moment, one thing is for sure – the next two weeks are vital. Penrith face a couple of competition heavyweights in the shape of a rejuvenated Parramatta and defending premiers North Queensland in the next fortnight. A win against at least one of those opponents is vital to keep Penrith in touch with the top eight, as being one win from six matches starts to become a little difficult to fight back from. Parramatta poses a significant threat this weekend. Nobody has defended better than the Eels this season – they’ve conceded just 39 points and managed to keep the Wests Tigers scoreless on Easter Monday. But while their defensive record is unquestionably impressive, their attack

hasn’t necessarily set the world on fire. They have the third worst attacking record in the competition despite winning three of their four matches, and showed in round one against Brisbane that they can be vulnerable when they face an opposition that is at the top of their game. It appears as though Penrith will finally welcome back captain Matt Moylan this weekend and his inclusion is particularly important as it’ll increase Penrith’s attacking options close to the line, which have been somewhat lacking over the first four rounds. With Peter Wallace shifting to hooker and Te Maire Martin still finding his feet, there’s been a lot of pressure on Jamie Soward to lead Penrith’s attack but he can’t do it alone, and Moylan will provide the back-up that Will Smith simply isn’t capable of at fullback. The Eels’ danger men are obvious – Michael Jennings will be out for a big game against his former club, while Semi Radradra is probably the toughest winger in the competition to contain.

Kieran Foran may be struggling with ongoing hamstring issues but he’s still providing the direction that the Eels have been missing in recent seasons. Most impressive for Penrith last week was Josh Mansour, who is in ravaging form at the moment. The fact that this match is a local derby adds some extra spice and I’m expecting another close contest. PANTHER RUMBLINGS with a masked panther

ELIJAH’S LEAVE PASS » I’ve been telling you for some weeks

that Elijah Taylor’s future at Penrith is extremely clouded and after being dropped again last weekend by new coach Anthony Griffin, it’s quite clear that the tackling machine isn’t part of the club’s future plans. What’s interesting now is whether Taylor will even see out the rest of the season with the Panthers. While he remains at the foot of the Mountains for now, there’s talk that other clubs including the Wests Tigers could be interested in his services for the rest of the 2016 season. Given how injury prone Penrith’s squad seems to be, I’d be surprised if the club let him go early but if a legitimate opportunity emerges, Penrith would surely at least consider it. Taylor was a favourite of former coach Ivan Cleary and is still close to his former mentor.

» The Panthers are poised to announce

a contract extension for captain and fullback Matt Moylan (pictured). The new deal would see Moylan sign one of the richest deals in the club’s history and would keep him a Panther until the end of the 2021 season. There is no doubt that the decision to appoint Moylan as captain earlier this season was in part to recognise the fact that he could well be a Panther for life. Panthers CEO Brian Fletcher has confirmed that the negotiations with Moylan about the extended deal are underway.

» Spotted #1: Panthers captain Matt

Moylan checking out the new Frangos charcoal chicken shop in Batt Street, Penrith.

» Spotted #2: Former Panthers hooker

SPECIALISING IN

Shannon Donato enjoying some lunch at a pub in Wollongong last Sunday.

» The NRL and the RLPA have agreed to a

range of measures in order to assist player wellbeing in the event of five-day turnarounds during the 2016 season. As part of the measures, the NRL has agreed to fund extra accommodation for travelling teams, as well as pursue extra provisions for clubs through airline partners. In the event of five-day turnarounds involving travel, the NRL will work with clubs to provide extra accommodation in order to reduce the impact of travel, as well as assist with recovery measures where appropriate. The NRL is working with its airline partner to provide clubs with complimentary airline lounge memberships, along with other measures designed to reduce the impact of five-day turnarounds.

» In a very strong indication that a new

stadium is on its way to Penrith in the future, the Panthers have been left out of any conversations surrounding potentially moving matches to Allianz or ANZ Stadiums. That’s because the NRL knows it’s unlikely any such move would be long-term, as the State Government’s planned ‘outer western Sydney stadium’ is highly likely to be in Penrith and will host Panthers matches.

» There was a surprise comeback at Panthers this week with former Marketing Manager Anthony ‘Swiss Tony’ Frantzis popping up at the opening of the Rugby League Academy. Frantzis left the Panthers last year.

» Talk of Lachlan Coote potentially

returning to Penrith is just that – talk. The club has no serious plans to engage in contract negotiations with the local junior, who has been a real star for the Cowboys in the last couple of seasons

and of course now has a Premiership ring. Coote is unlikely to have his contact at the Cowboys renewed due to salary cap restrictions and is keen to move back to Sydney.

» Masked Panther’s idea of the week:

Discounted tickets for Members to attend away matches. The NRL really needs to look into this to make it affordable for fans who are willing to travel to support their team at away grounds. The Masked Panther spent almost $200 to sit behind the goal posts with four other masked friends at WIN Stadium on Sunday. That’s despite spending hundreds of dollars on Panthers memberships already. Surely the NRL needs to create a game-wide concept that recognises club Members at all grounds.

» 175,000 fans watched Penrith’s clash

against the Dragons last Sunday on Fox Sports, while a further 234,000 watched

on Channel Nine. Fox must be extremely excited about the figures for matches this season, especially those that clash with Channel Nine’s coverage. People are clearly choosing Fox Sports when they have the option, which is a worry for Nine, who will be dealt a further blow if Ray Warren retires at season’s end.

» The NRL still hasn’t fixed its issue with

kick-off times. All week, and in fact all pre-season, Monday’s match between Parramatta and Wests Tigers was scheduled to kick-off at 4pm. But that was never going to happen – both teams and the host broadcaster, Fox Sports, knew that the kick-off was actually 4.15pm. The same thing happened on Good Friday for the match between Canterbury and Souths. Why does the NRL persist with this? The other major sporting codes in Australia never delay kick-off times to that extent. It’s treating fans with contempt.

NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87

P

anthers captain Matt Moylan will skipper the side for the first time this Sunday afternoon when Penrith tackle a red hot Parramatta Eels. The 24-year-old will make his long awaited return to the NRL this weekend after injuring his back during a pre-season trial against Canterbury. Moylan’s cool and calm approach to games will be very much welcomed by his Penrith teammates who have struggled to close out matches on three occasions this season. Speaking with Extra Time, Moylan said he was healthy and excited to be back. “The back is going good, I was trying to

return last week but it wasn’t quite ready,” he said. “This will be my first game for the year and my first game in almost a year as well, so I can’t wait to put the boots back on and get out there.” It’s been a frustrating 10 months for Moylan who seriously injured his ankle last May and was subsequently ruled out for the season. Moylan finally returned to action during the pre-season but suffered a stress fracture in his back, which ruled him out of the opening month of 2016. The NSW Origin hopeful said it was tough watching from the sidelines. “It’s frustrating we’ve let a couple of games slip, the boys have been putting in a massive effort each game,” Moylan said. “We’ve just got to tidy up a few things that will help us get over the line and win those tight games.

Matt Moylan will play his first game for the season against Parramatta on Sunday The popular fullback revealed negotiations for an extension have already begun with the club. “I’m not close [to re-signing] but I think talks have started,” Moylan confirmed. “With a facility like this (Rugby League Academy), why would you want to go?” Moylan is already contracted with Penrith until the end of 2017.

“We’re building and getting better each week, I think a lot of players are starting to find good form.” Meanwhile, speaking at the opening of the new Panthers Rugby League Academy, Moylan responded to reports that he is poised to sign a multi-million dollar contract extension that will make him a Panther until the end of 2021.

RIVALRY RUNS DEEP My loyalties are always questioned during the week leading into the local derby between Penrith and Parramatta, and I try to avoid this discussion altogether with my general response being that I am in a win-win situation and I will then jump on the team that gets the two points to claim bragging rights. But if you ask me to declare the winner before kick-off then that is when I sit nicely on the fence. My household is split down the middle with two Penrith and two Parramatta supporters, so the banter flying around the house all week is relentless and it can easily turn into 3 v 1 dependent on the result of the game because I can and I will jump ship to either side if I need to. You could easily fall into the trap of thinking that Parramatta will be far too strong for Penrith this week going by their

respective positions on the ladder but, in all seriousness, it is a really difficult game to predict who will win. The Panthers really should be sitting on equal points alongside Parramatta having let two games slip through their fingers, and I am sure this will give Penrith even more motivation to get a much needed win on Sunday afternoon at Pirtek Stadium. I said in my first column what a success the introduction of the NRL Bunker has been and I do stand by my comment, but there are still flaws in the system. In my opinion whenever there is a try scored and the referees are not sure about the decision they should simply stop the game without giving an opinion on whether it is a try or no try, then refer the outcome to the Bunker to review the footage and come up with the correct

result. This will take away any guessing from the officials regarding the play and also the benefit of the doubt ruling. Again this is only my opinion, I am sure

they will get it right sooner rather than later. See you next week. Go the Panthers. Or the Eels!

sive 28-12 victory over the St George Illawarra Dragons at WIN Stadium. With the scores level at 12-12 at halftime, Penrith came out firing in the second half, scoring three unanswered tries to seal the win. Try scorers for Penrith included Dylan Edwards, Corey Waddell, Ratu Tuisese, Tyrone May and Robert Jennings. Nathan Cleary kicked four from five. This Sunday afternoon the Panthers will travel to Parramatta to tackle the Eels.

Desperate for a win, Panthers reserve grade coach Steve Georgallis has made a few changes to this weekend’s line-up to tackle Manly. Halfback Sam Clune shifts to fullback while Malakai Watene-Zelezniak returns to the centres, and with Sione Kotoa fit and firing at hooker, Zach Dockar-Clay will move into the halves for this Saturday’s game. Last Sunday afternoon the Panthers lost their second straight game, going down to the Illawarra Cutters 46-18. Elijah Taylor was a late inclusion for the clash, which saw the Cutters lead by just four at half-time. However, the second half was a different story with the home side laying on a barrage of tries to well and truly outmuscle the Panthers. Try scorers for Penrith included Matt Place, Sitaleki Akauola and Moses Leota. Josh Hall kicked three from three. This Saturday afternoon the Panthers will travel to Brookvale Oval to take on the Manly Sea Eagles.

BUSINESS W Walking in the footsteps of others fo

O

Making your business stand out

ver the Easter long weekend I spent a few days at the beach. On one walk back to our cabin, loaded up with bags and a beach chair, I was struggling to walk on the soft sand. Then I remembered that it is much easier to walk in the steps that others have made before me. The sand is a little more stable and it’s easier to get a foothold in the indents their steps have made. I still had to make an effort, but the walk was made a bit better. How true this is for us in business too! It is important not to be a ‘lone ranger’ in business, but rather to seek out people who have gone before us. Having a mentor who has been through startup, cash flow issues, staffing and recruitment challenges, and other problems common to many businesses, is invaluable. This doesn’t mean you are meant to copy ‘step for step’ what someone else has done. Most of us are striving to create a unique business, or at least a business

that reflects our own uniqueness. And that’s a good goal! But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t learn from the mistakes and triumphs of someone who is further down the business track than we are, and follow some of their steps to help us on our way. If you don’t already have mentors or colleagues around you, get involved in a local business group where you can meet others. Most business people I know are happy to share their experience and the pitfalls to avoid. So don’t be afraid to ask questions and learn from those who have gone before you. It might just save you from a great deal of unnecessary effort. And by doing so, you can prove wrong this quote by Douglas Adams: “Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.” Who are your business mentors? Tell us on Twitter @wwpenrith.

Q

uite often small business owners ask, how do I make my business stand out? Sure competitive pricing, having a website, great advertising, and excellent customer service are necessities but I believe there are other ways to entice potential customers to your business. Before any of the above are introduced, your business has to communicate its difference to your competitors. Here are some ways to make your business stand out: Product – Can you offer a product that is unique or even trendy that your business is associated with? Or, can you extend a product and offer a valuable service to make the product more useful to the customer. Service – This can be the packaging of a service as a product. Consulting is often delivered on an hourly basis. Packaging a consulting job based on an outcome, with defined deliverables and fixed package price is a very effective way to differentiate a service offering. Offer – Can you become known by an offer you make? For example, an account-

ant that offers his tax preparation clients a 100 per cent refund on their preparation fee when they refer four new clients. Unique habit – What about a financial planner who has his client’s car detailed right out in his parking lot when they come in for their annual review. It’s all about adding a unique touch. Guarantee – This one frightens some people but, you probably guarantee your work anyway, you just don’t say so. Come out and announce that you guarantee results and watch what happens! Against the competition – Many times you can create your category niche by looking for holes in the offerings of your competitors. If everyone in industry fails to address a certain problem, boldly grab on to solving that problem and use your competition as the point of difference. Once you find your chosen strategy or combination of strategies to differentiate your business, all of your advertising and promotion should be centred on that. Commit to it, stay at it and resist the temptation to wander off in the next new direction. Building a brand takes time and patience.

ENTERTAINMENT PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE

Back to the good old days KATE REID

I

21

f you’re a music fan who prefers to hear your favourite songs blasting through amps rather than earphones, you’ve probably been lamenting the state of the live music industry of late. Music venues are closing at an alarming rate and gig nights seem to be few and far between as other forms of entertainment take hold. But there’s still plenty of people in the industry whose love for live music has never wavered. Perfectly encapsulating this passion is the upcoming Back to Reactor 1 concert which will be heading to the Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers next month. Like a mini music festival, Back to Reactor 1 – whose name references the old Reactor 1 nightclub which was located in the Panthers complex – will feature 10 acts playing 30 of their biggest hits live. The line-up is a who’s who of Australian musicians from the 80s and 90s including Ross Wilson, Eurogliders, 1927, Mark Gable, Richard Clapton, Sharon O’Neill, Swanee, Steve Kilbey, Rose Tattoo and the hugely talented Wendy Matthews. Aside from a couple of small line-up changes this group of musicians has been

getting together for these compilation shows for over a year now and Wendy said they’ve been having an absolute ball. “We have just as much fun backstage as I think they do out the front,” she laughed. “I’ve never quite done anything like this before, so it’s a first for me. It’s good fun, it’s something completely different than just hanging out with my guys and touring.” In keeping with the rock theme of the evening, Wendy’s portion of this huge three hour show will feature some of her more upbeat tracks including the mega hit ‘Let’s Kiss (Like Angels Do)’. Wendy is also currently touring her solo work including her extensive back catalogue and tracks from her most recent album ‘The Welcome Fire’ which she co-wrote with Aussie artists including Josh Pyke and Megan Washington. Wendy’s aim has always been to stay away from musical trends, a move which has seen her still producing new music while attracting a wide range of fans. “I look out at some of my concerts and I see a 14-year-old girl and her mother, and her grandmother, it’s really lovely,” she said. “I can see three generations of women sitting in front of me and that’s the stuff I really love to see. “To me it’s a reaction to the fact the

grandmother and the 14-year-old don’t see [my music as] being time pigeonholed. In that way I’ve really succeeded in what I wanted to do.” While Wendy still manages to tour regularly she’s well aware of the fact that the live music industry is struggling to compete for people’s attention, but she is hopeful that things will turn around. “Things go in cycles so who knows,

maybe it will cycle right back,” she said. Regardless of the future of live music one thing’s for sure, as long as there’s people who are willing to embrace concerts like Back to Reactor 1 there will always been a place for music geeks to go. Back to Reactor 1 will be on at the Evan Theatre on Saturday, April 30 at 8pm. Tickets are $89. Visit www.penrith. panthers.com.au or call 4720 5555.

e’ve a mate who for as long as we can n remember, has always served a sparkling g red at his barbecues, be they centred on n beef, lamb, pork or even poultry. And you can be sure that most times his bubbly of choice will be Katnook Founder’s Block Sparkling g Shiraz, a drop that served chilled always fills the glasss with wonderful fruit flavours and a bead of lively, fine e bubbles. The currently available 2013 vintage is particularly y rewarding, and not just with a barbecue but a range e of dishes including duck, turkey, pork – and for we of sweet-tooth, absolutely marvellous with chocolate-based desserts. Or again, it’s an ideal drop as an aperitiff as family or friends arrive for lunch or dinner. This 2013 is actually the result of an earlier than n normal vintage in Coonawarra, brought on by good d winter rainfalls that led into a warm and dry spring, g, and which continued through the growing season n producing reds with great colour and tannins. On the nose it’s all about concentrated dark cherry, y, plum and raspberry notes with hints of spice and d liquorice, while the palate’s full of ripe and juicy blackkberry and plum fruits, subtle sweet spices, hints of dark chocolate and soft lingering tannins, and bright ht acidity. Good buying at $25 with those diverse food d offerings. One to note: Chardonnay buffs will find themselvess doubly rewarded with Peter Logan’s 2014 Apple Tree e Flat label – firstly because it’s simply a darn good d Chardonnay, and secondly because its super value at just $13 (pictured).

DVD He Named Me Malala Rated PG // KATE REID

Based on the story of Malala Yousafzai – the teenager who was shot by Taliban gunmen on her way to school in Pakistan’s Swat Valley – ‘He Named Me Malala’ is a documentary that explores the life of the young activist who took up the fight for girls education. The film brings together interviews, video footage and beautifully animated scenes to tell Malala’s fascinating story. ‘He Named Me Malala’ also has a strong focus on Malala’s relationship with her father, who himself was a principal, teacher and a strong advocate for education. While we get to see Malala meeting with world leaders, and becoming the youngest ever Nobel Prize laure-

ate, it’s also nice to see her playful interactions with her family, particularly her brothers. The juxtaposition between wisebeyond-her-years activist and annoyed sister gives us a glimpse at the normalcy of Malala’s life behind the spotlight. The only criticism I’d have for this film is that it doesn’t really delve deep enough into the very complex issues at the core of Malala’s interesting story. Regardless, this is an enjoyable film that shows how much change can be brought about by the actions of one person. ‘He Named Me Malala’ is rated PG and is available to rent and own on DVD.

Zayn Malik

Mind of Mine // KATE REID After splitting from Harry, Liam, Louis and Niall, aka One Direction, Zayn Malik has stepped out as a solo artist with the release of his debut album ‘Mind of Mine’. This album is a slightly more mature, downbeat and r‘n’b influenced affair than One Direction’s fun-filled upbeat pop tracks. The album’s first single ‘PiLIOwT4lk’ (yep, the track names really are stylised with a mix of lower and upper case letters, not a great decision when you’re trying for a more ‘grown up’ album) reached number one on the ARIA charts; unsurprising when you consider the overwhelming commercial success of One Direction. For my money the stand outs on ‘Mind of Mine’ are the soulful love tracks like ‘iT’s YoU’ which showcase Zayn’s smooth vocals. It’s clear that the ex-One Directioner wanted to make his mark as a mature artist, and to be honest this is a pretty good start, but it’s yet to be seen whether Zayn’s solo career will be a success.

Disney has just released its latest animated family flick and, by all accounts, it’s one worth checking out. The city of Zootopia is just like any other, expect for one small difference, it’s occupied by animals instead of humans.

From elephants to shrews, the city is a place where animals live and thrive. One of these animals is Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin), the first ever rabbit to join the police force. But the job isn’t as easy as she expected. Determined to prove herself, Judy takes up the opportunity to solve a mysterious case, but it means working with a cunning fox named Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman). This fun family animation features a star studded cast including Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba,

J.K. Simmons, Octavia Spencer and Sharika. So far ‘Zootopia’ has been receiving rave reviews from critics, with praise given for the film’s animation and its important messages around prejudice and stereotypes. With plenty of laughs for young and old this is a must-see flick for the upcoming school holidays. ‘Zootopia’ is currently screening at Hoyts Penrith. See www.hoyts.com.au for more information including session times.

Taylor TV NEWS

Ê Last week I mentioned ‘Gogglebox Australia’ was due back next week with a couple of new households to boot. Joining series three are housemates Zina and Vivian, who say they have a love/hate relationship with reality TV. Also joining the cast is the Sibery family, a house of three generations of women: grandma Emily, 86, her daughter Kerry, 63, and Kerry’s daughter Isabelle, 31. They have an interest in news and current affairs. Exiting the series is the Kidd family from the Blue Mountains, who have decided to watch less TV this year. All other households shown in the first two series’ will return. Ê Foxtel subscribers would’ve got a surprise last week with 7flix finally added for cable subscribers only. The new channel from Seven will be on channel 187 for subscribers with an iQ3, iQ2 or iQ1.5 cable set-top box. Discussions are still underway regarding satellite subscribers. Ê Channel Ten’s new series ‘Australian Survivor’ will be shot in Samoa. Samoa was the location of four US seasons of ‘Survivor’ from 2009 to 2012. A previous

AUSTRALIAN SURVIVOR LATE 2016 CHANNEL TEN rumour suggested it would be shot on the Malaysian island of Pulau Tiga, where the first US season was filmed back in 2000. Channel Ten has been inundated with applications with 15,000 submissions. A host is yet to be announced but it’s due to air later this year. The American version currently screens on 9GO.

Ê An interesting one from the US with former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin signing on for her own ‘Judge Judy’ style courtroom series. But unlike other court TV personalities like Judge Judy and Judge Joe Brown, Palin doesn’t hold a law degree. It will be interesting to see how that pans out.

Ê More original cast from ‘Prison Break’ have been announced as returning to the revived series. Robert Knepper who played Theodore “T-Bag” Bagwell, Amaury Nolasco who played Fernando Sucre and Rockmond Dunbar who played Benjamin Miles “C-Note” Franklin are all returning. They join previouslyannounced Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell and Sarah Wayne Callies for the nine episode event series.

Ê Action series ‘Gotham’ has been renewed for a third season. The show, which follows the beginnings of some of the DC Comics universe’s most famous superheroes and supervillains, stars Ben McKenzie as Det. Gordon, Donal Logue as Det. Bullock, Cory Michael Smith as Edward Nygma (Riddler), Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot (Penguin), and David Mazouz as young Bruce Wayne (Batman).

PENRITH’S MOST RESPECTED LINE-UP OF EXPERTS ARIES

LEO

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

It’s a fabulous week to be an Aries! Venus vamps into your sign which revs up your Ram charisma and makes you even more irresistible than usual. Then there’s a New Moon in Aries on Thursday, which is the best day of the year to set intentions; hatch ideas; and take steps to initiate bold new projects. So your motto for the moment is from birthday great Maya Angelou: “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.”

Joanne Madeline

Moore

HOROSCOPES

TAURUS

It’s a big week for busy Bulls, as Venus (your ruling planet) powers into dynamic Aries, which will give you a welcome energy boost and blow the cobwebs of procrastination into the outer stratosphere! Then Mercury moves into Taurus which will boost concentration, and help you focus on serious work that needs to be done. So your motto for the moment is from fellow Taurean (and acting great) Katharine Hepburn: “My greatest strength is my common sense.”

Gregarious Gemini – you can have trouble walking your talk. This week Mercury moves into Taurus, which will steady your mercurial mind and help you get things done. So it’s a wonderful week to power through all those mundane tasks you’ve been putting off … like finalising paperwork, paying bills, making appointments and tackling household chores. With Thursday’s New Moon in Aries, your motto for the moment is: “The early bird catches the worm.”

CANCER

This week Mercury activates your adventure zone. So it’s the perfect time to study, travel, explore and experiment as you gain inspiration from international friends and foreign cultures. Attached Virgos – with the New Moon stimulating your sensuality sector, it’s time to get up-close-and-personal with your partner. Singles – give smart-alec suitors the boot. Look for a lover who is kind, creative and compassionate. When it comes to money matters, get things in writing.

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

Enthusiasm is high but don’t jump to hasty, half-baked conclusions, and then pass on incorrect information. Serious Saturn cautions you to think before you speak and consult before you act. Is your love life stuck on auto-pilot? Thursday’s New Moon encourages you to blast away the cobwebs and view things from a totally fresh perspective. Singles – have you been looking for love in all the wrong places? Cast your net wide, and search for someone who’s not your usual type.

SCORPIO

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

You’re on an emotional rollercoaster this week Crabs, as you cope with shifting scenarios and oscillating moods. Thursday’s New Moon shakes up your career/reputation zone so get ready for a few surprises over the coming month. Work will be wildly unpredictable – or perhaps others are saying unexpected things about you? Creative networking has much to offer, as you connect with like-minded souls from near and far.

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

If you come on too strong with a friend or family member then you’ll just drive them away. Instead, focus on the things you have in common, as you improve the relationship via shared experiences and common interests. Power plays are also likely as Pluto amps up your control freak tendencies. Learn to let go and relax. One area you do need to control is your bank balance, as you strive to get the ratio right between saving and spending.

Prepare for a serious week, when you can get an incredible amount done. But you must keep your despotic tendencies under control! Tuesday’s Sun/Saturn trine is terrific for powering through creative projects. But it’s then followed by the Sun/Pluto square, which boosts your predilection for bossy behaviour and temperamental turns. Self-control is required, so you can capitalise on the positive and productive star patterns, without alienating others in the process.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Saturn is sauntering slowly through your sign, which isn’t easy. You’ll find hurdles are placed in your path, which will help you grow and mature – like a fine red wine. As birthday great Bette Davis said: “The key to life is accepting challenges.” But you must make sure you also learn from them. Thursday’s New Moon encourages you to celebrate your strengths and work on your weaknesses, with plenty of Sagittarian passion and pizzazz.

LIFE & STYLE

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

Conscientious Capricorns are the workaholics of the zodiac – and this week you’re in overdrive. You’re in the mood to work long and hard and courtesy of the Sun/Saturn trine you have the motivation and discipline to power through projects and get an enormous amount done. But, if you try to control people and situations, then it will be a long and worrisome week. You have the power to influence those around you, so make sure you do so in helpful and happy ways.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

Are you ready for a grand adventure? This week’s Sun/Uranus hook-up sees curious Aquarians ricocheting off in diverse new directions. Which is exactly how it should be, as you explore and experiment to the max. And don’t worry about making messy or embarrassing mistakes along the way. Keep stretching your wings and trying new things. Be inspired by fellow Aquarian, movie star Jack Lemmon: “Failure won’t hurt you, but fear of failure will cripple you.”

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Saturn pushes you to be the very best you can be at work. If you’re looking for employment, don’t sell yourself short. Learn to sing your professional praises. So your motto is from Bette Davis: “Always attempt the impossible in order to improve your work.” It’s also a wonderful week to write down your goals for the future. But, when it comes to your peer group, be discriminating. Don’t waste time with fickle friends.

RELIGION

Lee Strobel was the legal editor for the Chicago Tribune, the most read newspaper in Chicago and one of the most read newspapers in the USA. Lee Strobel was also an atheist, someone who did not believe in God, who didn’t believe that Christianity had any credibility. But Lee’s world was rocked when his wife became a Christian! Shocked by this news but intrigued by the positive changes he saw in his wife’s character and values, Lee became increasingly aware

It’s never too late to find out the truth

www.glenmorepark anglican.com.au and on Facebook

that something had clearly impacted her life. So, Lee decided to use his journalistic and legal skills to investigate the claims about Christianity, but especially about Jesus. He realised that the resurrection of Jesus was the key. While anyone could claim to be divine, if Jesus backed his claim by returning from the dead, then that was pow-

erful evidence he was telling the truth. So for nearly two years Lee investigated the historical evidence on whether Easter was myth or reality. What did he find? Jesus really was executed. The resurrection really took place. The tomb in which Jesus was buried was empty. After his death and resurrection, Jesus really did appear to many individuals and groups of people. A significant number of people, who before Jesus’ death and resurrection were opposed to Jesus, now after these events, having seen the risen Jesus, dramatically converted to follow him. One by one, Lee’s objections evaporated. In the end, after thoroughly investigating the matter, Lee, like millions of people before him, realised, to use the words of the Bible, that Jesus is “The way and the truth and the life” and he became a follower of Jesus, which he still is 34 years later. What about you? Do you have a story about how you found Jesus? We’d love to hear it! Reid NUTRITION

In the last week or so we’ve started to feel that very familiar chill that signals the start of the transition into the cooler months. With cold weather comes the urge to snuggle up indoors and reach for warm, comforting foods. Salads just don’t seem very appealing when it’s cold and miserable outside. Unfortunately those comforting foods that we love so much can also be lacking in nutrients and a bit too high in energy, fat, sugar and sodium, think hot chips and gravy, or meat pies.

How to eat healthy during winter Kate Reid is a journalist and university qualified Nutritionist with a Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) degree from the University of Wollongong. kate.reid@ westernweekender. com.au @kate_reid6

But the change of season doesn’t have to mean your healthy, balanced diet goes off the rails. It’s just a matter of finding warming nutritious replacements and enjoying the chips and pies in moderation. A good way to know if you’re on the right track is to look at how balanced the meal is. Aim to include plenty of vegetables, plus a side of high

fibre carbohydrates like brown rice or wholegrain bread and a small amount of lean meat or tofu and lentils if you prefer a vegetarian option. Some delicious and nutritious cold weather meal options include: • vegetable soups, which can be made in large batches and kept on hand for a quick healthy meal • stews and slow cooked meals full of vegetables and either meat or lentils • lean meat, seafood or tofu curries with a small serve of brown rice • burrito bowl with brown rice, lentils, salad and guacamole • for a hot breakfast try poached eggs or avocado on wholegrain toast, or porridge • salads can still be a great winter food, but try swapping to warm options like a Thai beef salad or one packed full of roasted vegetables • wholegrain toasted sandwiches with your choice of fillings – just go easy on the cheese and butter • to keep you warm between meals there’s also nothing better than a cup of tea or coffee Happy eating! What’s your ideal winter food? Email news@westernweekender.com.au.

FRASER – MEDIUM DINGO MALE- $400

ADOPTIONS K I T T E N S

BENTLY - Male Maine Coon Mix – 12 WEEKS OLD - $150

Fraser is a beautiful 1-year-old Dingo who is shyer and more tentative than some of his brothers, but also less boisterous/less prone to jump up. He is very affectionate with people he knows he can take some time getting to know you and is more wary of taller/larger men than other people. Because of his shy nature it would be great to see him find a home with one of his brothers.

Hi my name is Bently! I’m a handsome little gentleman, curious, loving and very playful. I adore people and sometimes can be seen using my human friends as a bench to lay on. Bently is still unsure about dogs but would do well with a small to medium cat-friendly dog. He is fine with children and great with other cats, but does take time to acclimatise to new situations.

VINCENT – MEDIUM DINGO MALE $ 400

MAISY - Female Maine Coon Mix – 12 WEEKS OLD - $150

This 1 year old is a very outgoing friendly boy, incredibly peopleorientated and exceptionally cheeky. He loves puzzle toys such as kongs as well as tug of war and would make a great jogging companion. Like all dingoes Vincent is a fantastic climber and digger, and will require a dog enclosure or a secure 6 foot fence with top angling or flat-top extensions.

Maisy was found in the parking lot of a busy McDondalds and servo station with numerous other cats and kittens including her siblings Bently and Jet. With the help of an amazing foster carer however she’s turning from a street urchin to a proper respectable furry family member. Maisy uses his litter tray well and is a very well groomed little lady.

as your pet wakes up and improves as they warm up. Your pet may also become reluctant to do things that were previously easy such as get in or out of the car or jump up onto beds etc. Arthritic animals may also become tired easily and become irritable when touched. They may even growl or try and bite if they are patted somewhere that

The arrival of children can be a defining moment of your life. It’s a whole new stage of living, bringing up a smaller version of yourself while desperately trying not to teach them your own bad habits. It’s stressful, it’s difficult, but ultimately it can be the greatest thing that you ever do. Just like moving out of your parents’ place, obtaining your first home loan or getting married, having a child has major effects not only on your personal development but your financial goals as well. But you might

How kids can change your budget

owner and manager Bank of Queensland anthony.walker@ boq.com.au

be surprised just how much of an influence Junior has on your spending. The power of the pester Ask any parent about the number of times they have given in to a child nagging them about a certain purchase – you’ll probably get an awkward laugh and a heavy sigh. Parents are, after all, only human – a persistent child can wear you down into surrender.

But did you know that pestering power can have far more wide-reaching effects? According to one piece of research from Roy Morgan, children have at least some influence over a large number of different kinds of purchases. While things like the family car were primarily the domain of parents, choices of clothes, toys, fast food and rented movies were more heavily in favour of children. Pocket money Many parents teach their children that they have to earn pocket money through chores, so at least the parents do get some labour in return. The average is $10 a week for every child in Australia. That amounts to a pretty large chunk of change flowing from a household budget to your kids – and that’s not including what you spend already! A change in priorities Disposable income falls, eating out turns into supermarket spending, children’s clothing goes up (rather unsurprisingly) while you also end up spending less on personal care. Parents sacrifice a fair bit of the budget to their children, which just goes to show how important it is to get the right kind of financial advice and personal banking before embarking on the endeavour.

The colour of the season is pink! With cooler temperatures we tend to reach for old faithful greys, black and navy in our winter outfit choices. It’s time to brighten up this season with a softer approach with the ultra-feminine shade, pink! An easy colour to be afraid of, with these simple tips anyone can pull off this candy colour, the key is to go for fresh and polished and not fussy. To pick the best shade for you this will depend on your hair and skin colouring, you want a tone that works best

with, not against it. For the more olive complexions with darker hair you can get away with pale nude pinks and salmon. If you have a fairer complexion, delicate light shades might wash you out so try deeper jewel tones like magenta and bold fuchsia and rose. Celebrities can be seen rocking this colour head to toe creating high impact looks.

Rhianna opts for a luxurious baby pink fur worn with matching trousers, blazer and a plunging top. Supermodel Gigi Hadid headed out to a Balmain after party in a coordinating streamline pink ensemble, wearing a striped silk bodysuit and duster coat. To avoid looking overly girly pick more modern structured pieces like a pastel pink coat and skip the cutesy tulle skirts. For an edgier touch try pink denim. I love ‘The Jegging’ by Cotton On in the colour Sateen Pink, you can find these in store now at Westfield Penrith. These are cool and casual in a perfect musk shade, wear effortlessly with a white T and sneakers.

is painful for them. They can also develop muscle atrophy; this means that muscle tissue will decrease in size due to lack of use and affected animals will often have legs which look much thinner than a normal leg. Arthritis is generally diagnosed based on history and symptoms and sometimes with x-rays. There are several treatment options for arthritis. Overweight animals should be encouraged to lose weight as being overweight complicates the treatment of arthritis. You may think that arthritic animals shouldn’t go for walks as this may be painful for them, however, gentle and moderate exercise is beneficial as it maintains muscle mass and preserves the flexibility of joints. Heavy exercise such as sprinting and jumping up is counter productive. It is important that arthritic animals are exercised on a lead or harness and not allowed to go off lead so they do not over exert themselves. Swimming is an excellent exercise as it improves muscle mass without placing excessive pressure on the joints. There are joint supplements available and these products contain ingredients such as glucosamine, chondroitin and fish oils.

Coming into the colder months of the year, we thought it would be appropriate to discuss arthritis in pets. Arthritis is one of the most common ailments in middle aged and older pets. Sometimes, even young animals can develop arthritic changes in their joints. Arthritis causes chronic pain and can affect your pet’s quality of life. Arthritis tends to be more obvious during colder weather. The most obvious signs include limping and stiffness and you may find that this is worse as soon

Over 100 songs were whittled down to 11 for this new album.

Rams hope to charge towards finals again

GOLF WINNERS

New Penrith Rams head coach Kevin Kirk going through plays with his troops. Photo: Christian Triffitt NATHAN TAYLOR

fter making the finals for first the time since 2011 last season, the Penrith Rams will be hoping a change of coach will see them continue down a path of success. Former Rams lower grades coach Kevin Kirk will take the helm of Penrith’s first grade side this season after the club moved on from long-time coach Barry Denton last year. Penrith reached the AFL Sydney Division 2 finals for the first time in four years last season, only to bow out in the second round.

A

Speaking with the Weekender, Kirk said he hopes to build on last year’s incredible success story. “Without making any grandiose predictions, we do aim to make the finals again,” he said. “I’m loathed to make any grand statements but I think it will mainly hinge on the development of the guys who come up.” Kirk said his relationship with players in Penrith’s lower divisions, after having coached them in previous seasons, will be an advantage. “It’s been an advantage to have a relationship with players from the lower grades because we’ve lost a few this year

due to retirement, and we’ve got some young fellas coming through looking to fill those gaps,” he said. “I think as a whole the club is very well balanced throughout the grades, there’s no real separation between first and third grade for us – we’re one club.” Penrith only won six games on their way to a finals appearance last season, something coach Kirk hopes to improve on in season 2016. Kirk said it could take his relatively new side a few weeks to gel. “It’s hard to tell what the chemistry will be like until you get out there, but we plan to play a more structured brand of footy this season,” he said.

“We’re a new side and it might take a couple of weeks to gel but we’re fairly confident if we stick to the right path we’ll finish fairly well.” Penrith played Maitland in their one and only trial game and were victorious by 22 points. This Saturday afternoon they’ll take on the North Shore Bombers in an opening round showdown at St Leonards in Sydney’s north. “North Shore are a quality club, they are traditionally strong and it’ll be a tough kick off for us,” Kirk said. “There were some good signs in the trial against Maitland and we’re hoping to build on that.”

It’s do or die for Wanderers Story continued from » p. 72 Speaking on Tuesday morning, Wanderers super sub Brendon Santalab said it’s all or nothing tomorrow night against Central Coast. “This is the final straw for the Premier’s Plate and it’s a must-win this week, we are well aware of that,” he said. “We’ll have to go out with all guns blazing and be disciplined in defence as well.” After winning it in their inaugural season in 2013, Santalab said his goal at the start of this season was to return the Premier’s Plate to western Sydney. “I want to win the Premier’s Plate and it’s still there for us to win,” he said. “I think the team that’s been the most consistent over the whole year will win the Premier’s Plate.” On Wednesday the Wanderers announced plans to play their home games at Homebush while Pirtek Stadium is unavailable. Most games will be played at Spotless Stadium, while key fixtures such as the Sydney Derby will be played at the bigger ANZ Stadium. Kick off between the Wanderers and Central Coast is at 7.40pm this Friday, April 1 at Pirtek Stadium.

Record field as veteran golfers converge on western Sydney for annual Championships NATHAN TAYLOR

he Western Sydney Veteran Golf Association has successfully hosted the 24th NSW Veterans State Stroke-play Golf Championships, with three rounds played at Penrith, Richmond and Stonecutters Ridge Golf Courses last week. Australian Senior Champion and Twin Creeks Golf Club member Denis Dale confirmed his status as the country’s leading golfer, winning the tournament by a whopping 10 stroke margin. Penrith Golf Club’s Dave Limbach finished in second spot ahead of fourtime winner and Kiama Golf Club member Col Kenning in third. Leonay Golf Club’s Laurie Cupples and Stonebridge Golf Club’s James Hogg tied for fourth. “I have really enjoyed this tournament and will return to western Sydney next year to defend my title,” Dale said. The Championships were a resounding success for local organisers, who have not only won the right to stage the event for the next three years but attracted the strongest ever field of veteran golfers in the history of the event. It was an impressive array of talent on display with 60 of the players in the full

Veteran golfers Dave Limbach, Denis Dale and Col Kenning Tournament Director and Leonay Golf Club member Les Knox was very pleased everything went off without a hitch. “We were blessed with fine weather, all three courses were presented in excellent shape, and there was a full field of quality players from all over the state,” he said. “I was particularly excited about the strong representation of country golfers in the field this year.” Stonecutters Ridge’s Fred Wernicke was the handicap winner of the tournament.

field of 144 single figure handicap players. Perennial winner Col Kenning seriously challenged Dale in the first two rounds at Richmond Golf Club and Penrith Golf Club but Dale’s consistency won through, with his final round at Stonecutters Ridge sealing victory. “I was in there with a big chance but missing several putts in the five to 10 foot range on the final day proved my undoing,” Kenning said.

Around the grounds RUGBY: The Penrith Emus lost their second straight game, hammered by Sydney University 80-26 in Round 2 of the Shute Shield competition. Last weekend’s blowout score was certainly reminiscent of the Emus of old, something coach Jeremy Paul will not be too pleased about. Even with the late inclusion of Waratahs star Will Skelton to the Emus line-up, they were still no match for Sydney Uni who led 42-12 at half-time. This Saturday afternoon the Emus will travel to T.G. Miller Oval to take on Eastwood. Kick-off is at 3pm.

BASKETBALL: After enjoying the Easter long weekend off, Penrith’s Division 1 Youth League Men’s and Women’s teams will return to the court this Saturday, April 2. Penrith’s women will take on the Bankstown Bruins at 3pm while Penrith’s men will also battle the Bruins at 5pm. Both games will be played at Penrith Sports Stadium in Cambridge Park. FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers succumbed to their first ever loss in the NPL as they went down to Bankstown City 2-1. With both teams heading into the match on maximum points and sharing the lead at the top of the table, there was an expectation of a classic battle and the crowd did not go home disappointed. Adding to the intrigue, former Wanderers Foundation Player and premiership captain Michael Beauchamp was taking on his former club for the first time. This Saturday at 7pm the Wanderers take on St George in Blacktown.

CRICKET: Penrith’s First Grade side have been eliminated from the Sydney Grade Cricket competition after they were defeated by Sydney in last weekend’s semi final. Sydney won the toss and sent Penrith into bat first. The home side were dismissed for a disappointing 169 runs after 63.5 overs. Tim Cummins led the way with the bat for Penrith scoring a team-high 66 runs. When Sydney hit the crease on Sunday morning, they reached Penrith’s target with ease, scoring 4/202 after 70 overs. Penrith’s Josh Lalor took 2/52 in the six wicket defeat. Sydney will now battle Bankstown in this weekend’s Grand Final.

Final after they defeated St George in last weekend’s semi final. Penrith will now take on Sydney University at Howell Oval in this weekend’s all-important decider. Meanwhile, Penrith’s Second Grade cricket team have bowed out of the competition, losing to UNSW in last weekend’s semi final.

hey’ve turned a traditional rugby league stadium into a soccer fortress, but the Western Sydney Wanderers will farewell Parramatta Stadium tomorrow night, making way for work to begin on a new-look ‘Wanderland’. The Wanderers will be desperate to farewell the venue in style, with Friday’s clash against the Central Coast crucial to their Premier’s Plate chances. The Wanderers’ title hopes are in freefall after a shock 2-0 loss to Melbourne Victory last Friday. The surprising defeat sees the Wanderers slip to fourth position on the A-League ladder with just two games in hand. After victories last weekend, Melbourne City (44), Brisbane (44) and Adelaide (43) are now all ahead of Western Sydney (42) on competition points. The Wanderers will now have to rely on other results to go their way plus win their last two regular season games against Central Coast and Wellington, to have any chance of finishing first past the post.
