nother long-standing Penrith business is to close its doors with surf and ski retail outlet Off the Edge to shut its iconic Station Street outlet after 32 years. Mario Facciolli purchased the ski and surfwear business 15 years ago to provide a livelihood for his wife and now 28-year-old daughter, Stacy. But after a tough few years of fighting a losing battle against big name chain stores and online shopping, the family has decided to call it quits. “People on the Internet are getting better prices unfortunately, and aren’t supporting local businesses. It’s sad because once it’s gone it’s gone,” Mr Facciolli said. “We really, really need to support local businesses, this is the consequence of shopping online – a shop that provided a service to the local community can no longer do that.” Stacy said she would be particularly sad to see the family business close its doors. “It’s going to be really sad. I’m going to miss this place. It’s been my second home,” she said. “I’ve been a mum for the last four years and have been excited to get back into it, but now I can’t.” While Mr Facciolli said the initial purchase of the business was not to make them rich, it obviously still needed to remain profitable to make all the family’s hard work worth it. “It has been profitable in the past, but if you’ve got to keep topping up every month, your accountant just brings you back to reality to admit it’s just not sustainable,” he said. Off the Edge is likely to close on December 31.

Teen’s 3am joyride turns to tragedy • Alek Ostojic killed after crashing moped • Teen wasn’t wearing a helmet • Police issue safety warning JADE ALIPRANDI

eenager Alek Ostojic paid the ultimate price for a 3am joyride on a moped – losing his life in a tragic accident at Erskine Park on Tuesday. As the community questioned why the 13-year-old wasn’t at home in bed, his family was dealing with the reality of losing a son with his whole life ahead of him. At about 3.10am on Tuesday, emergency services were called to Tyrone Place where they found Alek unconscious on the road. Early investigations carried out by police suggest he was on a moped that collided with the rear of a parked semi-trailer. Three boys were at the scene, including one 17-year-old and one 16-year-old, believed to be Alek’s brother. It’s unclear if the two teens were simply observing the 13-year-old on the moped or were also taking part in the activity. Alek suffered fatal head injuries and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. The 17-year-old ran to nearby security to get help while the 16-year-old remained at the scene after the collision. Duty Officer at St Marys Police Station,

T

Chief Inspector Tracy Stone, told the media on Tuesday the injuries the boy sustained were severe. “The boy has collided with the truck and the injuries were significant enough that he died after CPR was given at the scene – they’re actually very bad injuries,” Chief Insp Stone said. “We are still investigating the actions taken before the collision and how the boys came to be in the possession of a moped.” Both teenagers are assisting police with their inquiries but had not yet been formally interviewed by police when the Weekender went to print. “Young boys with risk-taking behaviour is of concern to police and we would hope that they would consider these risks before taking them,” Chief Insp Stone said. “We will offer extended support services to those people who were first on the scene as well as our officers who were also present at the scene.” It’s understood that the location of the accident is a known hot spot for burnouts and joyrides. Police are asking for any witnesses to the incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or St Marys Police on 9677 7499. Investigations are continuing.

Marcus Cornish A better future

fter getting married two weeks ago, myself and my wife faced a small dilemma at the end of the reception: getting from the venue to our hotel in the Sydney CBD. Never fear, new wife says, we can “call an Uber”. I’ve always been a little unsure about Uber, the controversial ride sharing service that is becoming more and more loved by Sydneysiders but has traditional taxi services up in arms. The fact that Uber is largely unregulated and there’s no definitive safety checks when it comes to drivers and vehicles has always made me sceptical. I’ve also felt sorry for taxi drivers who face significant costs just to get on the road and are suddenly being undercut by a rebel industry. News this week that the Baird Government is likely to legalise Uber in NSW, and implement new guidelines surrounding its operation, is both inevitable and sensible. My first Uber experience a fortnight ago was nothing short of superb. Within minutes of requesting a car, our driver confirmed the cost and his estimated arrival time (less than five minutes). We were able to monitor his progress via a smart phone, ensuring we knew exactly how far away he was. His car was clean and comfortable and he was both friendly and chatty. He knew exactly where he was going, and was helpful when it came to the large amount of luggage we were carrying. All of a sudden, I was something of an Uber convert. My wife, who is a regular Uber user, tells me this level of service has been the

case almost every single time she’s used the ride sharing concept. Most Sydneysiders who are regular taxi users will tell you that it’s often not the same story when it comes to cabs across this city. Booked cabs often don’t turn up, drivers sometimes have no idea where they’re going and the level of service too often fails to meet expectations. It is true that booking an Uber is likely to cost you more under the possible NSW Government changes, but I’d suggest people will continue to use the service. As long as any ride sharing service is regulated to the point that it is safe, reliable and meets all reasonable legal requirements, then there’s no reason it shouldn’t be allowed to operate. If anything, it will give the taxi industry the kick up the backside it has so long deserved and will hopefully, in the end, be better for the customer.

White Ribbon Day White Ribbon Day was held on Wednesday and it was fantastic to see so many people in the local community supporting the campaign to prevent violence against women. We can be proud that we live in an era and a generation where this issue is being so loudly and visibly tackled – we can only hope future generations will benefit from the significant voices we hear now rather than the silence of the past. Unfortunately, the week was tarnished by an horrific case of violence in Penrith last Sunday, with a 10-month-old boy beaten and burnt by his mother’s partner (see story on page seven). The case remains before the courts and unfortunately we can’t discuss too many of the details here other than to say that the prayers of an entire community are with the little boy as he continues to fight for life in hospital. For campaigns like White Ribbon to ultimately be successful, we need our courts to be delivering sentences that match community expectations. Violence against women and children is abhorrent and should be dealt with using the full force of the law. We simply do not need men (and I hate to call them that) who bash women and children walking among us. Not now, not ever. Too often in Australia, sentences for violent offences do not meet community expectations, and it’s about time that changed permanently. Australia should be known as a country that gets tough on cowards who bash women and children, not as a soft touch where it earns a slap on the wrist.

he issue of domestic violence has made its way into our schools. From Term 1, 2016, NSW students from Years 7 to 10 will be educated on domestic violence as a compulsory part of their PDHPE syllabus. The Prevention of Domestic Violence Toolkit was launched at Penrith High School on Tuesday by Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Pru Goward and Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres. Ms Goward said the toolkit will empower youth by providing them with the knowledge to identify and act on domestic violence. “It will look at what domestic violence is, what we understand about gender roles, and the coercion and control issues that often are involved in domestic violence issues,” she said. “It will identify what you can do about it, if it’s your friend, your own family, a cousin or a family down the road.” Ms Goward said arming students with this information will help them realise that domestic violence is not an acceptable part of life. “I’m hopeful that it will mean there will not be another generation of kids grow-

Emu Heights: Police find drugs, firearms in house

South Penrith: Police track down man who fled in car

A man has been charged after unregistered firearms and an enhanced indoor hydroponic cannabis plantation were allegedly located at his home in Emu Heights last week. At about 4.20pm on Thursday, November 19, police attended a home on Riverside Road in Emu Heights and spoke to one of the male occupants. Officers conducted a search of a caravan at the property and allegedly located an amount of cannabis, three rifles, a shortened shotgun and various ammunition types in excess of 250 rounds. Officers also allegedly located an enhanced hydroponic cannabis plantation consisting of electronic transformers, grow lights and 11 cannabis plants, with a potential street value of $55,000.

A man has been charged with multiple alleged offences, including an aggravated break and enter, at Emu Plains last weekend. At about 2pm on Saturday, November 21, police attached to Operation Countdown stopped a vehicle on Duke Place in Emu Plains. Officers approached the Holden Commodore sedan and attempted to arrest the driver, a 30-year-old man. It’s alleged he locked the doors and windows, before police attempted to gain entry by breaking a window. The driver then allegedly reversed the vehicle and accelerated at high speed, narrowly avoiding hitting the officers. At about 6.15pm, the man was located and arrested at a home on Glenmore Place in South Penrith.

Kingswood: Man dies after being hit by car on highway

Penrith: Brawl outside pub in Lawson Street

A pedestrian has died after being struck by a vehicle in Kingswood last weekend. Just before 11pm on Saturday, November 21, police and emergency services were called to the Great Western Highway in Kingswood following reports a pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle. On arrival, police located a 56-year-old man suffering critical injuries. He was treated at the scene before being taken by Ambulance Paramedics to Westmead Hospital, where he later died. The 31-year-old male driver of the vehicle was taken to Nepean Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

Police are urging any witnesses to come forward after a brawl involving around 50 males broke out outside a licensed premises on Lawson Street in Penrith last weekend. At about 11.40pm on Saturday, November 21, police attended the scene to find around 50 adult males yelling and screaming at each other outside the premises. Police officers began approaching the males to break up the brawl. It’s understood the males were in two separate camps and were from two teams within one local rugby league club. No charges were laid as the offenders managed to flee the scene.

Nothing short of evil: 10-month-old baby fights for life after gutless attack • Offender refused bail • Case returns to court December 14 • Baby remains in Children’s Hospital “It’s going to be slow and very painful because of how young he is,” she told Seven News. Ms Collins said the baby’s mother had reached her “breaking point”. “I’ve never seen her so heartbroken or distraught in my life. It’s just unimaginable,” she said. The Weekender understands that the baby was undergoing brain, spine and bone scans earlier this week to ensure there isn’t further undiagnosed injuries to other parts of the body. Police have confirmed that when the baby was taken out of the hot shower, his skin was starting to peel off. “The injuries this baby has suffered are significant and horrendous,” Det Supt McFadden said. He also said the mother was very distressed. She has maintained a vigil at her son’s bedside. The boy’s biological father released a statement to The Daily Telegraph in the wake of the incident. “Our hearts are broken for (my son), we cannot believe that this could happen to such a beautiful little boy,” he said. “We also hope the monster who did this (is) punished to the full extent of the law.” The 23-year-old charged over the incident, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will front Penrith Local Court again on December 14. Check our website for the latest updates.

JADE ALIPRANDI

23-year-old man remains behind bars after he allegedly burned a 10-month-old baby boy in a scolding hot shower at a Penrith residence last weekend. The man was charged with ‘recklessly inflict grievous bodily harm’ and was refused bail when he fronted Penrith Local Court earlier this week. He allegedly put the 10-month-old into the shower and turned only the hot water tap on before he left the room to put his phone on charge and have a cigarette, the court heard on Monday. The magistrate described the man’s attitude to the victim as “manifestly inadequate”. The attack has shocked the community and resulted in an outpouring of grief and anger, especially on social media. At about 3.50pm on Sunday, November 22, NSW Paramedics called the police for further assistance at the home on Castlereagh Street, with it unclear who made the initial call to 000. The baby boy suffered significant burns to his head, neck, chest and back, equaling to over 40 per cent of his body, and was also suffering significant head and facial injuries police said were “consistent with blunt force trauma”. He was taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead where he was placed in an induced coma and remained in a critical but stable condition at the time the Weekender went to print. Commander at Penrith Police Station, Detective Superintendent Brett McFadden, told the media on Monday the investigation is ongoing and is being treated as a domestic violence case. “The mother and the 23-year-old man, who is not the biological father, have been in a relationship for four to five months and have been residing at the address for the past few weeks,” he said.

A

Brett McFadden from Penrith Police Station addresses the media on Monday

“Our hearts are broken... we cannot believe this could happen to such a beautiful little boy”

“We understand the 23-year-old man and the 10-month-old baby were the only ones home at the time.” Det Supt McFadden said the 23-year-old man is known to police. The court heard that he had a “long record of violence”. The Daily Telegraph reported this week that he had only just recently been granted custody of his own son after the child was taken by the Department of Community Services. A friend of the baby’s mother, Tenielle Collins, said it would be a long road to recovery for the 10-month-old as he isn’t able to cope with the amount of pain he is in like an adult could.

Skinner, Secord at odds over emergency waiting times

CITY CENTRE EXPRESSION OF INTEREST By 2031, Penrith will have a population of 260,000 with an economic catchment of over 1 million people. Council is looking to work with partners to deliver bold and innovative development on two City Centre sites. “OPPORTUNITIES IN THE NEW WEST ARE ABUNDANT. IT’S A PLEASURE TO BE INVOLVED IN THIS UNIQUE APPROACH TO FURTHER DEVELOPING THE REGIONAL CITY OF PENRITH.”

Property Development Advisory Panel, Chair Sean O’Toole

SW Health Minister, Jillian Skinner, has hit back at claims the Baird Government released data distorting the condition of the state’s emergency departments. Last week Shadow Health Minister, Walt Secord, accused the NSW Government of releasing statewide data that averaged waiting times at emergency departments. Mr Secord said averaging the data of 85 emergency departments including those in small regional centres distorts the figures, especially for western Sydney. “With the NSW health and hospital system under enormous pressure, the last thing the Baird Government should be doing is issuing a selective report card congratulating themselves,” he said. “In NSW, patients wait at every stage. They wait for an ambulance. They wait outside hospital to get into the emergency department. They wait for a hospital bed and then they are rushed out of the hospital before they are fully recovered.” Mr Secord referred to data that indicated almost half of emergency department patients in western Sydney wait longer than four hours to be treated. He suggested that Nepean Hospital is

Shadow Health Minister Walt Secord with Londonderry MP Prue Car at the top of the list, where 47 per cent of patients wait longer than four hours, followed by Bankstown at 45 per cent, then Westmead at 44 per cent. However, Mrs Skinner dismissed these claims. “The report to which he refers was not a report of a NSW Government agency but the annual report of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), which compares the performance of states and territories,” she said. Ms Skinner said 73 per cent of patients left NSW emergency departments within four hours and elective surgery performance was strong.

Dangerous disease found on farm Warning about online livestock purchases after footrot found in goat at Llandilo DALE DRINKWATER

ivestock owners are being warned after a goat in Llandilo was identified as having a case of virulent footrot. Greater Sydney Local Land Services (GSLLS) district veterinarian, Guy Weerasinghe, said the contagious infection affects both goats and sheep. “Virulent footrot is highly contagious and this case has the ability to cause serious complications for animals, owners and surrounding properties,” he said. The infection was identified at a small hobby farm in October, where the owners had recently bought livestock online. Dr Weerasinghe warned hobby farmers about the dangers of buying stock online, an option that an increasing number of farmers now opt for. “Livestock often don’t get that health check like when purchasing a puppy or kitten,” he said. “While it might be more convenient than going to a sale yard, many of these websites do not advise farmers of the risks involved or their legal responsibilities. As a result notifiable diseases such as footrot can spread rapidly without detection.”

L

Greater Sydney Local Land Services vet Dr Guy Weerasinghe and Biosecurity Officer Aziz Chowdbury inspect a possible footrot case

Dr Weerasinghe said the GSLLS were quickly called into the Llandilo property in question to test a small number of sheep and goats. “One of the goats had a kid that was showing lameness with a footsore,” he said. “The client took it to a clinic and the vet quickly identified it as footrot, then from there she called me. “We looked at every sheep and goat there to try to score the degree of lesion. We swabbed four and one was definitive, two were borderline and one wasn’t.” Dr Weerasinghe said footrot is likely to manifest in rain and during spring, and since first identification, this particular case has become worse. “I revisited the farm a couple of weeks after the initial visit and it looked like it was getting worse. When we first visited they were about a grade one, its now grade two,” he said. “Unfortunately one way of treating it is culling those animals heavily infected. Thankfully, because this is a smaller farm, we could come up with a foot bath to treat it.” Dr Weerasinghe said to follow the legal requirements for stock owners when purchasing stock.

Connecting nations through music Local Professor hopes to build artistic links between Western Sydney University and Japan DALE DRINKWATER

lenmore Park resident and Western Sydney University Associate Professor Bruce Crossman is embarking on a mission to link Australia and Japan through music. Associate Professor Crossman secured an Australia-Japan Foundation grant that will enable him to take up a week-long residency at Aichi University of the Arts. He hopes the trip from December 11 will begin to build stronger ties with the university and its Professor Akira Kobayashi. “I would like Professor Kobayashi to bring his students to Western Sydney University, and then for us to go over there longer term. We have a similar Asia-Pacific attitude to music,” he said. “There’s a number of us in the AsiaPacific who want to try and make music for the region. “It’s a different aesthetic [to European music], the way we think is different, so if we are getting like-minds sharing our aesthetic then we can enrich each other.” Associate Professor Crossman, who is a pianist himself, has recorded sounds from going on runs in Glenmore Park, and was

G

Associate Professor Bruce Crossman and Lindsay MP Fiona Scott at WSU Library. Photo: Dale Drinkwater inspired to use them in his work to share with Japan. “I’ve got a 15 minute composition that I’ve written for them, and that will be

really exciting to get some feedback from them. It’s solo harp, and they will have a harpist there,” he said. “My work for Aichi, ‘Emergence of Dark-

ness’ for solo harp, draws on the colour and vibrancy of Japanese court music, Gagaku, as well as koto, a type of lute energy gestures.” As well as presenting his composition, Associate Professor Crossman will interact with staff and students at Aichi as a mentor and rehearse works for Japanese performers. “It will be good to learn more about these ideas in the heart of culture – Japan,” he said. Associate Professor Crossman met with Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott who congratulated him on securing the $1456 grant for his project. “Associate Professor Crossman’s project, which focuses on the arts, will open up so many doors for our future researchers, students and entertainers,” she said. “The Australian Government recognises the importance of connecting with its partners to support Australia’s ongoing social, cultural and economic growth.” Ms Scott said it was fantastic to see such a connection on an individual level. “It also generates important people-topeople links that underpin Australia’s research, trade, investment and social engagement with the world,” Ms Scott said.

Housing

Better housing plan needed for future Time for a change: Wentworth Community Housing pleads for governments to take a new approach DALE DRINKWATER

entworth Community Housing (WCH) is calling on the Government to stop relying on the housing market and provide a national housing policy. At a meeting last Friday, Chairman Keith Bryant said State and Federal Governments need to set clear policy objectives to ensure the right mix of affordable housing meets population growth. “If the supply and pricing issues are not addressed as a matter of urgency, we expect to see more families pushed to the margins at a great cost to our communities,” he said. “We recognise there is not a ‘one hat fits all’ solution. However, a comprehensive national housing policy would go a long way to solving some of these issues.” Mr Bryant said as house and land prices have risen faster than wage increases, Governments should rethink the reliance they have on market forces to provide a solution to housing. “The housing market as it currently exists is broken,” he said. “Escalating housing prices flow all the way down the line as people who want

W

to buy stay in the rental market, allowing landlords to keep rents high; locking out people on low incomes.” PowerHousing Australia oversees 28 notfor-profit housing organisations across the country, and Chairman, Scott Langford, said a policy and funding strategy from all levels of government is essential. “We need to build a national housing policy that can, and should be, the backbone of our economy and the foundation of an Australian society,” he said. WCH CEO, Stephen McIntyre, said there is hope just around the corner, as the NSW Government prepares to release its policy on social housing early next year. “That will hopefully provide the framework for a number of initiatives that will help the community housing sector in NSW grow and particularly help WCH grow in the Nepean Blue Mountains area,” he said. “We are particularly looking forward to the prospect of the Government going ahead with the transfer of more properties, so they can be managed by community housing organisations.” Mr McIntyre said securing more properties from the Government will help WCH and similar organisations grow and become more efficient.

Penrith, the home of sport There is so much to love about Penrith. I am continually excited by the opportunities our city provides to such a diverse range of people whether it is through employment, education, health, sport and leisure, culture or tourism. Penrith offers the lot and is a destination of choice for so many of these pursuits. The city is preparing to host its second Ironman 70.3 event after the success of the inaugural event last year. Athletes from across Australia as well as the world come to Penrith to race this gruelling event around the spectacular Penrith Lakes and surrounding area. While the competitors may not be enjoying the idyllic location of the lakes and its mountain backdrop, spectators are rewarded with iconic views. Many regard Penrith as one of the ‘homes’ of triathlon and that has been further strengthened by the announcement of the Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championships in 2017. Australia’s longest running triathlon, the Nepean Triathlon, has put Penrith on the map for world class events to follow. Penrith will host the Sydney Thunder

T20 cricket teams with two games to be played at the picturesque Howell Oval. Council has partnered with the Thunder to bring the opening round of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and the only pre-season hit out for the men’s team ahead of their Big Bash League (BBL) season. The WBBL game in Penrith is a celebration for all women in sport. There are many national and international athletes who call our city home. Canoe/kayak champion Jessica Fox, Australian netballer Paige Hadley and Opals basketballer Tahlia Tupuea are just some of the sporting stars to call Penrith home. The inaugural game for the Thunder’s women team will be against crosstown rival the Sydney Sixers and will feature local cricketers Naomi Stalenberg and Mikayla Hinkley who are grade players for the Penrith Cricket Club. I encourage all sports fans to witness the talent that Penrith Cricket Club is producing in what is a very entertaining format of the game on Sunday, December 6 from 2.30pm.

omething big is coming to next year’s Penrith Relay for Life event. Now in its 15th year and currently the highest rating Relay for Life in NSW, next year’s event was officially launched earlier this month at the new location of Penrith Paceway. “The event has got so big over time that we have outgrown the venue we have used for the last 14 years at Howell Oval,” NSW Cancer Council spokesperson, Nathan Dart said. “We expect to keep growing and this is a big move for us, and a positive one for sure.” Almost 1,800 people registered for the 2015 event with just over $400,000 raised for the Cancer Council. “We are aiming really high for 2016 and would like to raise over $500,000 and have over 2000 people register for the event,” Mr Dart said. “We are really calling on the community to come out in force and register now.” Mr Dart said the 2016 Penrith Relay for Life will focus even more on the ceremonies of celebrating survivors of cancer, those going through it now and the ones that have been lost. “I’m excited about the changes and it will highlight the significance of why we

Sneaky solution?

10% off

By reducing the amounts that the Federal Government is now prepared to reimburse hospitals, via Medicare, to cover some inpatient costs, they have given the incentive to the various health funds to either reduce the amounts they will pay out on some claims or remove some services from cover altogether. The Federal Government has effectively increased the Medicare Levy by stealth, thereby bypassing the unpopular Medicare co-payment dilemma. A very sneaky way of getting around a difficult problem. During the last five weeks, I have attended the Transition to School program with my grandson who will be enrolling in 2016. This program, run by the teachers at St Clair Public School, is designed to introduce new Kindergarten children to school life and establish a relationship with the children. I am delighted with the welcome we have received from all the staff and older children who have helped us. I have to say that I am very impressed with the school itself. The facilities are great, especially the areas other than the classrooms including the great cooking area for the

kids, library and mini farm that has plants, vegetables and chickens that the children can access. You can see how much effort the Kindergarten teachers have put into this orientation program. It is obvious by the way they interact with the children and parents that they love their jobs and are proud to be part of a great team of dedicated teachers, looking after the education of our children. I strongly recommend St Clair Public School to anyone with Kindy and Primary school aged children as the best possible school to enrol their children. CHRISTINE HARRISON, VIA EMAIL

Summer Safety Sunday I write from Royal Life Saving NSW to simply ask readers to do all they can to help stop backyard pool drowning – a huge issue for our State. Disturbing figures sadly show that in the past 13 years in NSW, 83 children have died in a backyard swimming pool. Often the most dangerous aquatic location exists in our own backyard. We ask readers to take part in ‘Summer Safety Sunday’ on November 29. We ask readers to check their pool and spa from top to bottom and to make sure it’s safe, fully compliant and that any outstanding issues – where something needs to be fixed – are acted on. enrith Mayor Karen McKeown has welcomed a plan to look at options for rail in western Sydney associated with the new airport at Badgerys Creek, but the good news won’t slow down her own rail campaign. The State and Federal Governments have announced a scoping study that will examine the need for rail to support western Sydney’s proposed airport and surrounding growth areas. But after campaigning for a rail link to Penrith to be open at the same time as the airport, Cr McKeown won’t be resting on her laurels. “I hope it’s not a study with a predetermined outcome,” she said. “I think we should always keep our finger on this. Council will certainly still continue to advocate until the northsouth rail links with Penrith.” Cr McKeown said she has no doubt the 12 month study will prove rail is necessary. “I think it’s common sense and common sense has prevailed,” she said. “It will show that a rail link is greatly needed, and it will show the benefits to the community, local employment and the connectivity to the Western Sydney University.

“We all know rail needs to be there and it needs to be there before the airport is up and running.” The State and Federal Governments have committed to have the airport ‘rail ready’ when it opens, meaning the route will be determined and the spaces for stations and tunnels will be excavated. NSW Minister for Transport, Andrew Constance said the scoping study will help decide when rail will actually be operating and servicing the area, and how to fund it. It doesn’t mean rail will service the airport straight away. “There is no doubt there will need to be a rail line one day,” he said. “The options plan will help us determine the type of rail, when it will be required and how much it will cost to lock in the right transport solution for the future.” Federal Minister for Major Projects Paul Fletcher said the commitment to ensure the airport is ‘rail ready’ from day one, means services can start running as soon as the demand is there. “The rail options plan will be completed over the next 12 months and will investigate economic, population and commercial drivers, as well as mapping out costs and time frames,” he said. The community will be able to have their say on the study in the future.

mployees at Kmart Penrith launched their 2015 Wishing Tree Appeal late last week and are working with Mission Australia this year to help those in need. Over the past 27 years, the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal has helped collect more than six million gifts and this year, the aim is to raise more than 500,000 gifts nationally. Students from Henry Fulton Public School in Cranebrook performed a Christmas elf dance while singers from

the Performance Academy in Penrith sang some Christmas songs to the audience at the launch last Thursday, November 19. School captains from Henry Fulton Public School officially launched the store’s Wishing Tree Appeal by cutting the cake with Kmart Penrith’s Wishing Tree champion, Sarah Mills. “It’s a great thing to be able to give back to the community, and especially to the local Mission Australia branch who will distribute the gifts we raise to their clients,” Ms Mills said. The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal draws to a close on Christmas Eve.

Students and parents share nerves Why you should make the most of school orientation days JADE ALIPRANDI

ot only is the festive season upon us, but so is the daunting task for both parents and first-time students – school orientation day. The new school year is just around the corner, and many parents will be experiencing their child going to school for the very first time. Regentville Public School Deputy Principal, David Bamford, said you can make it a much less tougher task by simply doing some research. “If you do a little bit of homework about the school and ask people who have children there, you get a really good feel for the school,” he said. “Preparing any questions you have to bring with you on the orientation days is also good instead of dwelling on it and not knowing.” Mr Bamford thinks the reason for so many concerns among parents, and sometimes the children, is the fear of the unknown. “Parents are worried about their children and that’s fair enough but it’s probably the fear of the unknown. Most parents haven’t had anything to do with schools since they left themselves,” Mr Bamford said.

N

Planned burn in Londonderry Fire crews will be conducting Hazard Reduction Burns in Londonderry later today (Friday, November 28). The work will be undertaken at the Richmond Greyhound Club at 312 Londonderry Road, Londonderry. Around 13 hectares of land are involved. Work will begin at 3pm.

Hurt in crash A 27-year-old woman was trapped after her car rolled in a two-car collision at Cranebrook on Tuesday morning. The CareFlight rapid response rescue helicopter was called to the crash in Andrews Road, landing adjacent to the scene at a baseball complex. She was freed after about 20 minutes by a NSW Fire and Rescue team and then further assessed and treated for back and abdominal injuries.

David Bamford from Regentville Public School. Photo: Jade Aliprandi Rebecca Lynch already has one child attending Regentville Public School with a second to begin next year. She says orientation days make it much easier for all involved. “The orientation days are very informative and many questions you have are answered but it will still be very foreign to you,” she said.

“The beauty of having your child in daycare before they go to school, even just one day a week, is that they make friends and most of the time they will go to the same school, which can make it easier.” Mr Bamford said if you still have concerns after the orientation days, to give your school a call.

Terrific Milestone as Shondelle raises $17,500 for Foundation JADE ALIPRANDI

mployee at the Milestone Hotel in Kingswood, Shondelle O’Connor, has just missed out on becoming the U.G.L.Y Bartender for 2015. Ms O’Connor was successful in raising almost $17,500 for The Leukaemia Foundation through the NSW/ACT U.G.L.Y Bartender of the Year competition, run through the Leukaemia Foundation. She managed to come in second place in the state. The competition is aimed at getting the hospitality industry involved in fundraising for the Leukaemia Foundation in any way possible. Collectively, everyone that participated raised over $310,000. “It’s an awesome feeling to have raised as much as I did,” Ms O’Connor said. “I had my goal at $10,000 and to reach what I did is amazing, especially when I think of all the families the funds will be helping.” Every 42 minutes an Australian is diagnosed with blood cancer. The U.G.L.Y (Understanding, Generous, Likeable You) Bartender of the Year competition is now in its eighth year and will be back next year. Speaking at the start of her campaign last month, Ms O’Connor told the Week-

Ms Rumble, who works as a cleaner at Penrith train station, was awarded the Sydney Trains Customer Service Excellence Award for the extra lengths she goes to when it comes to our local station. Ms Rumble happily extended her shift to cover a sick employee and also volunteered to stay back longer to bring a train carriage up to standard when it required cleaning to avoid delays.

“I want to make sure all customers have a great experience,” Ms Rumble said. “People going to work, school children, families and our staff all deserve a clean station.” Customer Service Director at Sydney Trains, George Stojkovski, said Ms Rumble is always being complimented for her work. “It’s our people that make the difference for our customers and Kaitlin is among the best because nothing is too much trouble,” he said. Sarah McGrath and employees from STA Travel are hoping to fill their donations bin. Photo: Megan Dunn JADE ALIPRANDI

O

ver 1.5 billion people, including 300 million children, are without adequate footwear around the

world. STA Travel, in conjunction with Soles4Souls, is hoping to decrease this number, one step at a time. Westfield Penrith’s STA Travel is just one of 20 stores chosen Australia wide to participate in the initiative. Through the month of November, the public are encouraged to donate a pair of ‘gently worn’ or brand new shoes by heading to their local STA Travel and putting the shoes in the charity bin. “We feel a sense of pride in ourselves that we are able to participate in this campaign,” Store Manager, Sarah McGrath said. “Not everyone would think of shoes

as a decent donation to a cause but it’s definitely a necessity for people.” The initiative is being run as part of STA’s November ‘my next step’ campaign that offers people a chance to win a return trip anywhere in the world, a G Adventures tour and $2000. Any shoes donated will go to people both in Australia and abroad. “We ask for almost new shoes or brand new shoes,” Ms McGrath said. “It might be that you bought a size too small or that you can’t get a refund for a sale item.” There’s only a few days left to donate your shoes. You can drop the shoes off at the STA Travel shop in Westfield. To participate in STA’s ‘my next step’ campaign, upload a creative photo of your shoes to Instagram, comment with ‘#mynextstep’ with your dream destination and tag @statravel.

hen you have been in business for a while, it is easy to become complacent. You rely on those repeat customers and regular clients. You take for granted that the great suppliers you have established ties with will always be reliable. You get used to the support of colleagues in your business networks. When you stop to think about those stakeholders, I am sure you are fully aware of how important they all are to the success of your business. But when was the last time you thanked them? The end of the year is an opportunity to say ‘thanks’ to the people who support your business, both directly and indirectly. Wherever possible, this needs to have a personal touch, rather than generic communication. Handwritten notes or cards are a great way to convey your appreciation, and allows you to add specific words of thanks if appropriate. Although it shouldn’t be used as a sales pitch, there is also nothing wrong

T

with including a (useful) branded item or using a thank you card with your logo on it. Although a personal touch is warranted, it is still a professional relationship that you are taking care of, not a heartfelt letter to a best friend! But here is a key consideration: any expressions of gratitude or thanks should be done without an expectation of anything in return. Although your thank you note will be from Mary Jones of XYZ Company, do it without expecting that you will generate more sales or more loyalty. Do it purely because you are grateful for what this person has done in the past, not for what you hope they will do in the future. Ralph Marston says this beautifully: “Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your appreciation, sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you’ll soon find many others around you. Truly appreciate life, and you’ll find that you have more of it”. Words to run your business by!

he end of the year always brings some relief but also some panic as objectives set out at the beginning of the year may not have been met or plans for next year have not been laid out. I think now is a great time to review the year and to set goals for the coming year. Successes shouldn’t be looked over quickly, they should be celebrated and analysed to see how next year can be even better. Some tips we generally take clients through at this time of year are: Get your bookkeeping up to date Ideally you have this up to date already. If you don’t have a bookkeeper or accountant close by then explore that option. You can’t make any sound financial or tax planning for the future if you don’t know where things stand. Analyse pricing strategy Once you understand your business’ financial picture, get honest about how things are going. Are you working harder but still treading water? Charge what you are worth by seeing the true value in what you provide. If you don’t value yourself, how can you expect anyone else to?

Do some end-of-year tax planning Most people think about taxes just once a year. You are losing vital chances to make any meaningful change to help your tax situation. It’s smart to set up a meeting with your accountant before the year comes to a close, so you can follow any tax advice while it still matters. Change your business structure If you have been thinking about progressing your business structure from a sole trader/partnership to a company for example, now could be the time. You can simplify your financials starting 2015 as the new structure. It is worth going through the pros and cons. Update your marketing I see so many business owners that are so busy helping clients that they don’t spend enough time on their own marketing. Is the content on your website and business social media profiles up to date? Just dedicate some time to update it all, including revamping, or overhauling your digital presence. Plan your holiday schedule You should still give all clients ample notice of your plans.

NUTRITION

ust six-months-old, Muscle Bros has brought a fresh new direction to Penrith, and transformed what it means to be a supplement store. Store Manager, Josh Biles, is your ‘go to’ Muscle Bros expert, who can provide you all the supplements you need for any kind of fitness goal. “Whether it’s for gaining muscle or losing weight, we will help you reach your goal with big name brands in stock such as MuscleTech, Cellucore, APS and Dymatize Nutrition,” he said. “Muscle Bros even has its own shake bar that makes delicious smoothies with all these supplements we sell in store and real fruit.” But Muscle Bros prides itself on going that one step further for customers, and covers you for all your health and fitness needs. “We have a wide selection of sportswear for males and females, and run a boot camp on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Not many other supplement shops offer that in Penrith,” he said.

“We also offer training programs and advice to our customers for free. It’s to spread the knowledge as we would rather people be active in the community than sit on the couch.” Mr Biles said he turned his life around by pursuing his fitness goals, and is rewarded every day by helping his customers do the same. “I want to share the knowledge with other people, so they can go out and achieve their goals and do what they want to do,” he said. “At the end of the day when someone can do what they couldn’t before and are on their way to achieving a goal, that’s what’s most rewarding for us at Muscle Bros.” Muscle Bros wants to help you achieve your fitness goals whatever they may be, by providing the advice, tools and supplementation to make that happen. Muscle Bros will have sales on throughout December, so hurry in to 2/552 High Street, Penrith, and start your transformation today. Why delay?

Iconic shops of Penrith’s past

One year ago...

P The November 28, 2014 edition of The Western Weekender features a positive response to a significant local issue – firefighting resources. “The practice of taking fire stations offline is set to end with the State Government bowing to public pressure and rolling out new firefighters and equipment ahead of what is expected to be a ferocious fire season, the Weekender reports. “The temporary closure of fire stations at various times was set to be a burning election issue, but on Monday Emergency Services Minister and Penrith MP Stuart Ayres announced that Fire & Rescue NSW would now operate under a record $665 million budget. 40 new firefighters will be stationed at key locations across Sydney while five new state-of-the-art tankers will be rolled out, with one to be located at Cranebrook Fire Station. The Weekender also reports about the uncertain future of the Penrith Business Alliance (PBA). Less than 12 months later, it would be gone. The report in the November 28, 2014 edition followed a decision by Council to extend its Deed of Agreement with the PBA for just six months – sparking speculation major changes were ahead.

An advertisement for Neale’s back in 1983

enrith has gone through many different eras of iconic shopping destinations, with the current generation enjoying the benefits of the enormous Westfield centre in the Penrith CBD. Back in the 1970s and 1980s, Penrith residents would remember two giant shopping players – Waltons and Neale’s. Incredibly, Neale’s was (until its closure) one of the oldest businesses in Penrith, opening its doors to horse and buggy clientele in 1882. It became a general store, and then by the time the modern times of the 1970s and 1980s rolled around, it was known for its clothing, household goods and furniture. In a local newspaper article in May 1983, Managing Director Bob Neale said that Neale’s was “part of the Penrith scene. “Certainly when the big city stores moved in here we were concerned for our future, he said. “But they have helped and business has never been better. Using the slogan ‘The family folk since 1882’, Neale’s would focus a lot of its marketing on back to school offerings at certain times of the year (as the pictured advertisement shows). Most would remember Neale’s from its iconic location at 311 High Street, Penrith. The site, near Penrith Police Station, has now been totally renovated into office buildings. In 1987, Neale’s moved away from the Penrith CBD and to a new location on The Northern Road. It would be the beginning of the end for this iconic Penrith business. In 1994, just seven years after moving to the new location, Neale’s ceased trading. John Cootes Furniture took over the store, and remains in the location to this day. Waltons, meanwhile, was another Penrith shopping institution. It began trading in Penrith way back in 1959, initially as a small homewares store. It then moved to Borec House in 1971. Today, where the famous Waltons once stood, Trade Secret is currently in residence.

Remember when... The date of construction for this slab cottage in Emu Plains is unknown, but possibly lies between 1867 and 1878. It was occupied by Police Constable William Bressington from 1891 to 1908, when a new police station was built next door. It was destroyed by fire in August 1996.

PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE

KATE REID

F

Home grown talent

or some lucky people their life’s passion is clear from an early age. This was certainly the case for Penrith-based composer Jye Bryant. “As a kid I wanted to play piano, even though I didn’t really know what it was called at the time, I just pointed to a piano once and I said to mum ‘I want to do that’,” he laughed. “Then I just basically nagged her until eventually she put me into piano lessons when I was five.” After getting his start in music early, Jye moved into the world of theatre at the age of 13, but after realising that singing and dancing wasn’t really his forte, he decided to try his hand at musical directing and writing. Since then the talented composer has written original scores for pantomimes including ‘Cinderella Meets Her Prince’, ‘Peter Pan’, ‘Sleeping Beautifully’ and ‘Aladdin’; composed music for short films and musicals; and has had his compositions performed regularly on the cabaret circuit in the UK, Australia and Canada. His latest show ‘The Things I Could Never Tell Steven’ will premiere at King Street Theatre in Newtown this December. Jye describes it as a “conceptual, musical, cabaret, review style show” that tells the story of Steven’s life through songs, monologues and voicemails from four characters, his mum, dad, wife and ex. The show explores the potential consequences that come from poor communication. “The whole point of the show is that the things that we don’t know often are the things that damage us most,” Jye said. As well as his latest production, Jye has also been working on songs for the Henry Lawson Theatre production of ‘The Oldest Profession’ which will premiere in February, and is currently writing an e-book about lyric writing. ‘The Things I Could Never Tell Steven’ is on at King Street Theatre in Newtown from Wednesday, December 9 to Saturday, December 12. Tickets are $25-$30. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.thethingsicouldnevertellsteven.com.

Man Up

Rated M // TROY DODDS “She’s just not the right girl” is a pretty common response after a blind date, but in ‘Man Up’, the right girl turns out to be, well, the wrong girl. This flick from director Ben Palmer is a love story with a twist, but of course has all the typical boy finds girl, boy loses girl, boy finds girl again elements that every romantic comedy must tick off the list. Nancy (Lake Bell) is 34, single, constantly hung over and unlucky in love. When Jack (Simon Pegg) mistakes her for his blind date, organised by a friend, she decides to run with it. For a while, she manages to keep up the charade, but when she eventually reveals she’s not quite the girl he expected, all hope for love is lost.

Well, so it seems. As Jack heads off on a date with the actual girl he was supposed to meet when fate, or Nancy, intervened, he starts to realise that perhaps the case of mistaken identity wasn’t so bad after all. The movie’s very predictable ending still manages to bring a smile, and thankfully it comes after just 88 minutes – any longer and this story of love lost and found might have become a bore. But it’s not only its length that saves this film. Playing an old school friend of Nancy’s, who plays a part in busting open the real story, Rory Kinnear almost steals the show from the two leads. He is hilarious, creepy and gets way

too little screen time. I was almost screaming out for him to have another scene or two. Unchallenging? Absolutely. But if there’s a rainy day coming up some time soon, ‘Man Up’ is a reasonable enough tonic.

DVD Self/less

Rated M // KATE REID

Adele

25 // KATE REID Adele is back and smashing all sorts of sales records with her new album ‘25’. This album sees the British singer covering the same territory that we’ve come to expect from her previous releases. As many of the memes doing the rounds at the moment have suggested, Adele’s music has a way of making you miss that stranger you made eye contact with once on a bus, such is the emotional impact of her songs. While this is another great album of love ballads from Adele, it doesn’t quite live up to the heights of her previous releases. First single ‘Hello’ is Adele in fine form, and is possibly one of the best songs she’s ever released. Unfortunately the rest of the tracks on ‘25’ don’t offer the same impact as previous hits like ‘Rolling in the Deep’ and ‘Someone Like You’. Regardless, it’s a testament to Adele’s talent that even when she’s not at her best she still manages to offer up a great CD.

4 STARS

‘Self/less’ is a psychological science fiction thriller that explores the idea of immortality. When wealthy real estate mogul Damian (Ben Kingsley) finds out he is dying he decides to undergo a procedure that will see him transplanted into a

healthy young body. When the procedure is complete and Damian takes over his new body (Ryan Reynolds) he starts to realise that the company that performed the surgery has been lying to him and the body he is in is not as new as he thought. While it’s an interesting premise, this film never really seems to go anywhere. For an action flick it’s not particularly action packed and while Ryan Reynolds and Ben Kingsley are great actors ‘Self/ less’ certainly doesn’t make the most of their talents.

WW20446

The film’s characters seem to be surprisingly unsurprised by the still very underground idea of ‘shedding’, aka having yourself transplanted into another body, and the main character of old Damian/young Damian is sadly pretty one dimensional. With a bit more character development and a more focused narrative this could have been a great film, unfortunately it never lives up to the potential of its concept.

WINE LIST

We all know that butter is great for flavour and moisture in food, particularly with leaner meats like chicken breast. You can really add to this by flavouring the butter. The list of possibilities is endless. It’s a great way to get the most out of expensive ingredients like truffle or saffron. It’s also a great way to use up excess fresh herbs. The ratio I use is 50g of the chosen ingredient to 200g of butter. Let the butter soften out of the fridge for one hour. Add the chosen ingredient to the blender and blitz on a medium speed. Add the butter 1/4 at a time. Combine for 30 seconds to a minute. Lay four layers of cling wrap

f you’ve an extra special Christmas coming up and you are looking for an extra special wine for just the two of you, give real consideration to Margan Wines’ recently released 2011 Aged Release Shiraz. At $100 a bottle this is a unique wine you’ll find is just the drop for a unique occasion like Christmas, especially if turkey is at the centre of the table. Andrew Margan created it using grapes from 40-yearold Hunter Valley vines that yielded just a half tonne per acre of intensely flavour-concentrated fruit when picked at full ripeness. After fermentation it was given 20 months in new French oak barriques, then bottled and aged for four years in Margan’s own cellars under Andrew’s care. A beautiful dark purple in colour, this one screams classic Hunter Shiraz, with aromas of white pepper, ripe dark berry fruit, tar, a hint of cigar box and lovely follow-through flavours. And while ideal for that special occasion Christmas lunch or dinner turkey this year, it’ll also mature beautifully over the next couple of decades for even greater enjoyment at Christmases or other special dining events down the line. One to note: Peter Logan at Logan Wines in Orange has long displayed a dogged commitment to evolve and improve his Logan Vintage ‘M’ Cuvee. For this drop, Peter’s broken away from a usual practice of close to equal parts of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Instead he’s opted for a whopping 79 per cent Chardonnay, 11 per cent Pinot Noir and 10 per cent Pinot Meunier, all off 18-year-old vines growing in rich, deep volcanic soils.

Ergotron’s WorkFit-T simplifies sitstand office routines “The WorkFit-T was developed with input from our top customers who love the fluid sit-to-stand capability of our WorkFit product line and wanted something for immediate out-of-box use,” President, Steve Baker said. “We are pleased to introduce it to the Australian market, whose long standing commitment to research in sedentary behaviour is groundbreaking, and paving the way to integration of healthier workstation options for businesses looking to improve their workplace health and productivity.” Australia’s Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute is a world renowned leader in obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease research. The Institute’s Physical Activity Laboratory has a substantial interest in understanding the impact of sedentary behaviour and is spearheaded by Professor David Dunstan who presented on the topic at Ergotron’s JustStand Wellness Summit in 2012. Most recently, Professor Dunstan was invited to join an international group of experts to determine guidelines to prevent prolonged periods of sustained sitting; the resulting guidelines were just published by the British Journal of Sports Medicine. “Our goal is to educate people about the health risks associated with physical inactivity and sedentary behaviour, and

SPECIAL FEATURE HEALTH & WELLBEING ustralians suffer from more melanomas and skin cancers than anywhere else in the world. There are three issues that result from overexposure to ultraviolet rays. These issues are sunburn, premature ageing of skin and skin cancer. There are three types of ultraviolet (UV) rays. UVA, UVB and UVC. UVC doesn’t reach the Earth’s surface so we are not affected by it. UVB (blocked by glass) is the major cause of sunburn and skin cancer. UVA (passes through glass) penetrates deeper into the base layer of skin. Prevention: • Sunscreen: Sunscreen is mainly effective against UVB rays. The level of SPF cover relates to the percentage of UVB rays the sunscreen blocks out. SPF 50+ blocks out 98 per cent, whereas 15+ only blocks 93 per cent. UVA rays are not measured by the SPF rating. Using a broad spectrum sunscreen will help block out UVA rays. Sunscreen should be applied 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every two hours. Remember to use a lip balm to protect the lips. • Clothing: The Australian Radiation laboratory (ARL) has found that many fabrics (particularly lightweight) are less useful than good sunscreen. An easy trick to do is to hold different fabrics up to light and see how dark the shadow is. Generally the darker the shadow the better the protection. Natural fibres such as cotton are densely woven and are a good choice.

Treatment of sunburn: • stay out of the sun to avoid any more damage. • apply a cold compress to severely burnt skin. • apply aloe vera gel to cool the skin and speed up recovery time. Another option is to use a large amount of moisturiser such as aqueous cream. • if the skin is broken apply a burn gel. • drink plenty of water to hydrate the skin and reduce alcohol intake Please see your doctor if you notice any new skin spots or any existing spots that are changing in shape, colour or size. Dark colours are preferred as there is less chance of reflecting the rays onto your face. The ARL has developed a UPF scale with a maximum of 50 to rate clothing on sun protection. The same theory applies for hats. Look for a thick material and also the wider and darker the better. Sunglasses are also very important to protect the eyes from UV damage. UV damage can result in cataracts. Check to see if your sunglasses have a protection factor of 10. In the cases where prevention of sun damage hasn’t worked then the skin needs to be treated for sunburn. Signs of sunburn usually appear one to 24 hours after exposure. Common symptoms include redness, inflammation, scaling, pain, swelling and blisters. If you get a fever or nausea from sunburn

If you’ve noticed signs of gum irritation, it’s likely due to plaque build-up. Plaque on dentures can harden into calculus, harbouring bacteria and can cause irritation. A simple clean, using buffing tools and waxes will remove the stains and give a polished finish. Your denture will look and feel like new again. Tips to help keep your dentures in shape all year round: • Never use toothpaste to clean your denture. Regular toothpaste is too abrasive and causes microscopic scratches that leave your denture prone to staining. • Brush carefully. Use denture paste with a specialised soft bristle denture brush to clean between your denture teeth and gums. Brushing your gums, tongue and roof of your mouth will also help to improve circulation. • Rinse your denture and mouth after every meal. Rinsing helps to remove bacteria. It’s also a good idea to wash your denture over a sink filled with water or over a folded towel. This will help prevent damage should your

SPECIAL FEATURE HEALTH & WELLBEING cne is a condition that affects a significant number of adolescents as well as those individuals in their 30s or even 40s. Acne is a major contributor of poor selfesteem, social anxiety and in some cases, depression. It can be characterised by pimples, blackheads, whiteheads and cysts, and is caused by inflammation of the hair follicles. In some severe cases, it can lead to permanent scarring (pitted, rolling, boxcar scars or raised hypertrophic keloid scars), skin discolouration and hyperpigmentation, erythema and blotchy skin tone.

A Dr

Mahmood Dealing with Acne and how to prevent it Medical & Fitness Centre 4736 6567 www.medicalfitness.com.au

Treatment Fortunately, there are several treatment methods available for acne as well as some effective preventative measures. Over the counter treatments are available from pharmacies containing ingredients such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide of varying strengths depending on the severity of the acne. These act as an antiseptic which work to unblock and oxygenate the pore preventing new pimples from forming and working to eliminate the existing pimples by reducing the amount of acne-causing bacteria present. However, this can result in the skin becoming dry, sensitive and peel which can be counteracted through the use of an effective, rich moisturiser suitable for the skin type. In more severe cases, a dermatologist can prescribe an isotretinoin treatment which is typically very effecting in curing acne.

Prevention Prevention is the best treatment for acne scarring which can be done through the maintenance of a complete, proper skin regimen in accordance to the skin type. However, if scarring does occur, surgical and laser treatments are also available if necessary.

Diet Moreover, acne can be prevented through the implementation of a healthy, balanced, preferably low GI diet, sufficient sleep (8-9 hours), proper cleansing and care of the skin, as well as a large intake of water daily. This will internally nourish the skin and can assist in the prevention of acne.

LEO

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

Many Rams will feel mighty restless – especially on Monday, when the Sun/ Saturn conjunction stymies communication and frustrates travel plans. Then the Mercury/Uranus trine activates your adventure zone, and you’ll be dreaming of exotic escapades and foreign shores. Sunday is your best day of the week as the Sun and Mars boost motivation and energy levels. So if you’ve got a challenging project that needs to be done – strike while the iron is hot!

HOROSCOPES

TAURUS

Saturn cramps your style on Monday, as your work is criticised or others fail to appreciate your creativity. Just remember that you are absolutely fabulous – even when people aren’t applauding! Your mood improves on Tuesday, when you shake off the mental cobwebs and learn something new. Sunday’s a super day to get the ball rolling on a challenging project. Inspiration is from Walt Disney [born on December 5]: “The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing”.

VIRGO

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Taskmaster Saturn demands that you get some serious work done on Monday! Matters involving finances, taxes, study and research are highlighted but if you don’t check all the facts thoroughly then mistakes are likely. Venus [your ruling planet] shifts into your relationship zone on Saturday, where it stays until December 30. Attached Taureans – plan something extra romantic with your partner. Single Bulls – look for lasting love with a lusty Libran or a sexy Scorpion.

GEMINI

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

Are you stuck in a rut? Are you completing daily tasks on auto-pilot? Resist the urge to be too safe and sensible! With Jupiter in your sign until September 2016 it’s time to broaden your horizons and activate your adventurous side. Whether you explore foreign shores or take on a challenge closer to home, your motto for the next nine months is from birthday great Mark Twain: “Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover”.

LIBRA

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

Your mercurial mind is hungry for a stimulating workout so it’s a wonderful week to solve a puzzle; play chess; dip into an adventure novel or try something new. Social networking and Internet commerce are favoured, as you discover innovative ways to deliver your message. You’re in chatterbox mode on Friday, when Mercury and Jupiter stir up your communication gene. You’re keen to hear the latest neighbourhood news but don’t get carried away and spread gossip!

On Monday there’s no substitute for hard work and no clever short cuts so stop complaining, roll up your sleeves, and get to it. Avoid procrastination like the plague! With gung-ho Mars moving through your sign until January 3 strive to go after what you want with charm, confidence and plenty of chutzpah. And try to balance being mentally rigorous with some creative brainstorming. It’s time for multi-talented Librans to step into the spotlight and shine.

With Venus and Mars visiting your domestic zone, it’s time to spruce up Casa Cancer with cleaning, de-cluttering, redecorating or DIY projects. Family members could do with some extra TLC too!

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Is money too tight? With Saturn moving slowly through your finance zone, your ability to budget is being tested. So it’s time to come up with a clever plan to cut spending and boost cash flow. Financial improvements you make now will pay off handsomely in the future. With Venus vamping into your sign on Saturday you’ll be at your bewitching and sexy Scorpio best as you utilise charm and consultation to get others on side.

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

There’s no denying there’s a tricky dilemma this week Sagittarius. You want to go, go, go … but the preferred planetary pace is slow, slow, slow! Monday looks mighty frustrating, as Saturn stymies you at every turn. Then, as the week progresses, sloppy attention to detail could see a promising project fall flat. LIFE & STYLE

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

The pressure’s on! You’ve got an incredible amount on your plate so aim to work smarter, rather than harder. And have you got a problem you can’t solve with logic? If you allow yourself the time and space to day-dream, imagine and visualise then you’ll come up with a surprising solution. Let your subconscious mind do the work! When dealing with friends, colleagues, clients or customers, a combination of being proactive and being diplomatic brings the best results.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

Adventurous Aquarians are in freedombunny mode on Tuesday and Wednesday, when positive Mercury/Uranus aspects fire up your curious mind and your independent nature. Communication is the buzz word as you seek out colleagues, friends and acquaintances. It’s not what you know – it’s who you know – so make the most of your networking skills and international connections. But be careful you don’t get carried away and – unintentionally – blurt out a secret.

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Work or home life will be challenging on Monday, when someone expects you to complete a task on a very tight timeline. Don’t complain or descend into confusion – just put your head down and get on with it. On Thursday and Friday you’re in the mood to daydream but don’t overdo it. Keep a firm grip on reality, otherwise you’ll delude yourself about a person or situation. To avoid disappointing yourself and others stay on top of facts.

PET HEALTH

Christmas is a great time of the year, but we often forget about the extra bits and pieces the season brings that can be very problematic for our pets. Every year during the Christmas season we usually see a kitten or cat with a string foreign body. This is where a piece of string or tinsel becomes obstructed in the animal’s intestines. The contractions of the intestines allow the bowel to move along the string and the bowel then becomes twisted upon itself.

Festive season adds to the dangers

Practice owner of Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic and the Western Sydney Cat Hospital

This becomes a life threatening problem as the string acts as a ‘saw’ through the intestines. This often is an emergency and requires surgery to remove the foreign object from the intestine and sometimes requires the bowel to be resected. Most animals will recover from this procedure but recovery can be long. The symptoms of this dis-

ease are vomiting, decreased appetite, abdominal pain and lethargy. Animals that love eating strange objects are especially at risk. We’re all busy around this time of year so we need to make sure we’re vigilant. Most animals will vomit from time to time but it is important to know when to seek veterinary attention. If your animal is having multiple vomits and is not eating then it is important to see a veterinarian. When animals have vomiting and diarrhoea, the fluid loss adds up quickly and they can become very dehydrated – seeing a veterinarian when there is both vomiting and diarrhoea is recommended. Most happy adult dogs and cats with the occasional vomit that continue to eat normally with no changes in behaviour are probably OK to be left and monitored. Otherwise a trip to the vet is recommended. In the meantime withhold food for 12-24 hours and always remember to check around the house and in the backyard for any further signs of vomiting. Have a safe and happy holidays and remember to be careful with Christmas objects like tinsel and baubles around your pets!

health and stability in everyday life. Swimming provides huge improvements to the cardiovascular system, as the nature of breathing whilst swimming promotes greater lung capacity. Joining a local swim club is a great way to swim for fitness whilst socialising with other fans of swimming. There are also weekly class-

es available for children and teenagers who like to swim for fitness, without the training schedule and competitive aspect that comes with squad swimming. Aquarobics has an image problem, often being seen just as an activity for retirees, the injured or the unfit. In reality, aquarobics is an exercise option which can be highly challenging and effective, and now attracts a mixed audience of participants across ages and genders. Aquarobics class options have grown to include Aqua Circuit including high intensity interval training, Aquanatal for pregnant women, Heartmoves for lower intensity, Aqua Zumba, and Deep Water Aquarobics using buoyancy belts. As for the beach, waves provide both turbulence and resistance, constantly challenging the whole body to remain upright or swim through the water. And anyone who has run on soft sand will know the challenge this presents – not many of us make it look as effortless as they do on ‘Baywatch’! Whichever option you choose, please observe basic swim safety and enjoy your water workouts this summer period.

Lap swimming is the ultimate all-in-one fitness package, working most muscles in the body with every stroke, increasing flexibility and muscle endurance. Water creates more resistance against the body than air does in land based exercise, so the muscles are strengthened and toned. dramatically amplified the intensity of FOMO. People feel there is always something happening which they are not part of. The result is increased jealousy and anxiety as people feel left out, less satisfied and less happy with their lives. God, through the Bible, has so much to say to us about this! God speaks to us about our

fears, our anxieties and our contentment. Being content is a great gift. For example, the Apostle Paul in the book of Philippians tells us how even though he’d experienced trials, hardship, hunger and deprivation, as well as times where he knew comfort and plenty, he could say that in and through all this, he had “learned to be content whatever the circumstances”. Notice how he says “learned”. In other words, contentment, living without FOMO, is a conscious, deliberate, ongoing pattern of thinking. It is recognising that when you are connected to God, by committing your life to Jesus, you actually already have everything that you really need! This is such a challenging truth, yet, it has been the joyful experience of millions of Christian people throughout history. May it be your experience from today and throughout the years ahead.

Ever heard the saying ‘time is money?’ There a lot of similarities between the two. Just like money, you can spend time on friends and family. You can invest time into learning new skills that – if chosen carefully – will improve you as a person. You can also waste time on pointless pursuits that will not give you anything in return. However, there is one key difference: Unlike money, you can’t generate more time. So where are we spending ours, and how can we make the most of it? It often feels like we’re not

using time very efficiently. For example, the average Australian adult spends 13 hours every week watching TV, according to figures collated by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. This means that we spend one month out of every year in front of the tele. Social media is another terrible time suck. In fact, marketing firm Sensis found

that the average user checks Facebook 31 times per week, up from just 16 visits across the same timeframe in 2011. In total, we waste around 8.5 hours per week trying to keep up with the Digital Joneses on Facebook. Ultimately, these statistics prove that time is at a premium. While we’re huge proponents of being responsible with money, we’re even bigger supporters of saving time. After all, even the most impressive personal bank account in the world is largely pointless if you don’t have the spare time to use it. So, what can you do to put more hours back into your day? Make use of technology There are countless apps on the market that can help you track how you spend your day and help you form positive and productive habits based off of the results. Set a structured schedule With so many things vying for our attention throughout the day, it’s important to consciously set aside structured periods to fulfil certain goals. Learn to say no Whether it’s social media feeds or overly inquisitive work colleagues, the modern world is rife with distractions that act as barriers between you and unlocking greater productivity.

FOMO is ‘The Fear of Missing Out’. While, to some degree, we may always have been scared of missing out on the things life offers us, psychologists and researchers are telling us that FOMO is actually growing, and growing quite dramatically. It has been discovered, that a key reason for the growth in FOMO is because people’s use of social media, especially Facebook, has spectacularly increased since its 2004 introduction. Kate

Reid NUTRITION

I have a confession to make, I love Jamie Oliver. This love only blossomed recently so it’s still in its early can’t-get-enough-of-him phase but I think this might be the start of something serious. You see, I’m normally very weary of chefs who give nutrition advice. The advice they give is often incorrect, and in the most serious cases they make health claims that are not only well beyond their scope of expertise, but can also be dangerous. So why do I love this particular chef turned nutrition advocate?

Why I’m in love with Jamie Oliver Kate Reid is a journalist and university qualified Nutritionist with a Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) degree from the University of Wollongong. kate.reid@ westernweekender. com.au @kate_reid6

1. Jamie is studying nutrition and works with a team of nutritionists When I read that Jamie was doing a nutrition degree at a university in London, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. As a nutritionist it’s encouraging to hear that someone with the level of influence that Jamie has wants to offer his fans scientifically backed nutrition information.

2. He doesn’t buy into the ‘superfood’ marketing craze While Jamie’s new book and TV show is called ‘Everyday Superfood’ he doesn’t buy into the ridiculous marketing claims that suggest that the only way to be healthy is to live on goji berry smoothies. Yes, these foods are nutritious, but as Jamie conveys to his fans, there is an abundance of nutritious foods out there that are just as good for us and won’t cost an arm and a leg. 3. Jamie encourages people to include vegetarian meals in their diet Anyone who reads this column regularly will know that I talk a lot about getting more vegetables in your diet, and it’s nice to see my new love shares my passion for these nutritional powerhouses. Although he still makes plenty of delicious meaty dishes, Jamie also encourages people to include more plant based meals into their diet and is reported to be working on a vegetarian cook book. 5. He recognises that diet restrictions don’t work You won’t see Jamie telling people they have to cut out major food groups like grains and dairy to be healthy. Jamie is all about moderation and balance, and knows that in every healthy diet there’s a place for the odd hamburger or chocolate.

LEGAL MATTERS

Off the Plan contracts are used by sellers to sell vacant lots of land or strata units before the necessary building works have been completed or before a subdivision has taken place. Almost all of these types of contracts include sunset clauses. A sunset clause is a clause that allows for the buyer or the seller to pull out of the deal if the development is not completed within a certain timeframe (known as the ‘sunset date’). Recently there has been a spate of cases where

Government acts on ‘sunset clauses’

Complete Legal & Conveyancing 4704 9991 Suite 11, 354 High Street Penrith

developers have used this to their advantage. Given the huge growth in the property market, lots that were sold 1-2 years ago are now worth much more than they were at the time they were sold, however this benefit passes to the purchaser as they locked in their price for the property when contracts first exchanged. As a result, developers

have been deliberately delaying completion of their developments as a way to get out of their contracts after the sunset date has expired so they can on-sell the properties for a higher price. While purchasers in these situations are entitled to get their deposit back they usually can’t recover their legal costs and may be priced out of the market as they can no longer afford to buy property to replace the property they lost. To avoid this unscrupulous activity, the government has announced amendments to the Conveyancing Act 1919 that dictates that before a seller can cancel a contract under a sunset clause, they must get the written consent of the purchaser, or obtain an order from the Supreme Court permitting the cancellation of the contract. In considering such an application the court will consider the terms of the contract, whether or not the seller has acted in bad faith, the reasons for the delay and whether the subject lot has increased in value. If you have found yourself in this situation and are confused about your rights, contact the team at Complete Legal and Conveyancing.

T

he all-new Holden Astra scooped one of Europe’s top motoring awards last week in Berlin, the 2015 Golden Steering Wheel in the compact class. The ‘Golden Steering Wheel’ is awarded by two of Europe’s biggest and most respected automotive media outlets; Auto Bild and Bild am Sonntag. Tested and reviewed by a hardened jury of readers, experts and celebrities in a number of extensive drive sessions, Astra was put through its paces before being crowned the victor. The all-new Astra, which Holden will launch in Australia in late 2016, fended off tough competition from other newcomers to the compact class crown thanks to a completely new lightweight vehicle architecture, cutting edge engines and a range of state-of-the-art features borrowed from the luxury class. Opel Group CEO, Dr Karl-Thomas Neumann, accepted the award on behalf of Opel and said this Astra was the best vehicle Opel have ever built. “The is the most important award for the best Opel we have ever built, and the most important car in our product portfolio,” he said. “We at Opel can be extremely proud of this ‘Golden Steering Wheel’. It proves that all of our efforts have paid off.” The all-new Holden Astra will be released in Australia next year.

PANTHERS

Penrith’s summer cricket bonanza Pat Cummins, Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown, Mikayla Hinkley and Naomi Stalenberg at Howell Oval on Monday. Photo: Megan Dunn NATHAN TAYLOR

enrith Council has teamed up with the Sydney Thunder T20 teams to bring the opening round of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and the only pre-season hit out for the men’s team ahead of their Big Bash League (BBL) season, to Penrith. Howell Oval will host the first WBBL match on the east coast when the Sydney Thunder battle crosstown rivals, the Sydney Sixers on Sunday, December 6 from 2.30pm. The historic match will be a celebration of women’s sport in Penrith.

P

Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown, said Penrith has produced many elite female athletes over the years. “This game recognises the achievements of local women in sport, not just in cricket but across many sports,” she said. “The Sydney Thunder WBBL team features talented local cricketers Naomi Stalenberg and Mikayla Hinkley who are grade players for the Penrith Cricket Club.” At just 17, Hinkley said she was excited to be playing such an important match. “Being so young and this being one of my first ever professional games, is a pretty exciting feeling – it will be a history making game for women’s cricket,” she told the Weekender.

“We’ve got some amazing cricketers dividing into different states, so it’s really going to be a great competition.” However, it won’t be just the women entertaining the crowd next month with the Sydney Thunder men’s team on show a week later when they bring their big hitters and international stars to Howell Oval for a warm up match. The BBL practice match, to be held on Saturday, December 12 from 4pm, will be the first time cricket fans can see the Thunder’s international stars in action as they prepare for their fifth BBL season. South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis and West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell will be on show in the practice game that

will also feature Aussie cricket stars Mike Hussey, Shane Watson, Gurinder Sandhu, and Penrith’s own Pat Cummins. 22-year-old Cummins, who’s currently sidelined with yet another back injury, is a member of the Thunder squad for the first time, having previously played with the Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers. “The Thunder is the closest team to where I’ve grown up and, to be part of such a strong organisation who represents the west, is pretty exciting,” he said. While Cummins’ back injury will keep him from playing with the Thunder this summer, the Aussie paceman still plans to have another stint with the Penrith Cricket Club as a batsman after Christmas.

Wanderers fans to stage walk-out Western Sydney Wanderers supporters have found a unique way to support their team this weekend – they won’t watch them play. The Wanderers’ major supporter group, the Red and Black Bloc (RBB), will stage a walk-out during Sunday’s game against the Central Coast Mariners in Gosford. It follows growing tensions between the RBB and authorities, with the latest twist being the controversial release of a “top secret document” featuring photographs of 198 fans who have been banned from attending A-League matches. The document was splashed across the front page of the Sunday Telegraph last weekend. Fans were outraged that the confidential document was published in a major Sydney newspaper. There’s also claims that some of the details featured in the story are incorrect. It is not clear who leaked the document. “People’s lives and livelihoods have been jeopardised due to the existence of a list that has been created without due process. Many of these fans, some of which are under 18, have not been charged or convicted of offences,” the RBB said in a statement. Going for gold: Three Penrith tumblers on the world stage at gymnastics comp in Denmark NATHAN TAYLOR

hree Penrith youngsters are currently in Denmark preparing to tumble their way to gold at the 2015 Trampoline Gymnastics World Age Group Competition. The trio, who train at the Kachan School of Tumbling and Performance in Windsor, landed in Copenhagen last Thursday where they’ll represent Australia at the prestigious competition, beginning on December 3. Emu Heights resident Jack Hemmings, 17, will compete in the 17-18 boys tumbling event; Glenmore Park’s Ethan McGuinness, 14, will battle it out in the 13-14 age group; while 12-year-old Sophie Wilson from Castlereagh will contest the 11-12 girls tumbling event. “It’s going to be a fun experience,” Ethan said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what the other countries are like, getting to compete and making new friends,” Jack added. With 25 years combined experience in tumbling, the trio said they have been working hard for months perfecting their routines, otherwise known as passes. “The training has been pretty intense… it’s all about perfecting passes and build-

Awards Penrith duo cap off successful year with impressive awards NATHAN TAYLOR

wo Penrith locals were the big winners at last week’s annual NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) Awards, held at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Penrith’s Rio Paralympic rowing hopeful Erik Horrie claimed the ClubsNSW Male Athlete of the Year Award while St Clair world champion netballer Paige Hadley beat a red-hot all-woman field to take home the prestigious Ian Thorpe Outstanding Achievement gong. Horrie’s award was further recognition for his stellar year that witnessed a third consecutive world arms and shoulders single scull world title in an event that he remains unbeaten in since a heroic silver medal winning performance at the London Paralympics. The multi-sport Australian representative won the gong ahead of fellow rower Cameron Girdlestone, freestyle skier Russ Henshaw, canoe sprint paddlers Lachlan Tame and Riley Fitzsimmons and Paralympic swimmer Matthew Levy. “This certainly has capped off a very good year for me,” Horrie said. “It is nice when you are recognised and win these awards.

T

“It’s not what you get up for in the mornings, but it’s the icing on the cake to actually be recognised for your results, which I think every athlete wants to get.” In one of the more inspiring stories of courage to come out of this year’s nominees, Hadley, coming off the back of a world championship winning performance as part of Australia’s netball team after tearing her ACL 10 months earlier, won the award in a category that also featured fellow world champion netballer Julie Corletto, world champion cyclist Kaarle McCulloch, Paralympic cycling silver medallist Simone Kennedy and duel Olympic hockey gold medallist Katrina Powell. “I was so blessed to be nominated but then to get it, I was in shock and shaking when I went up to receive the award,” Hadley said. “I don’t know how I am going to beat this, it has been an amazing comeback year.” The awards night, hosted by NSWIS Deputy Chairman and 2GB personality Alan Jones, attracted some of the state’s highest profile sportsmen and women, and recognised athletes and coaches in a range of categories including academic excellence, career development, team and individual performances.

Paige Hadley and Erik Horrie were honoured at the NSWIS Awards at the Sydney Cricket Ground last Thursday

Rugby League Tall and not prepared to fall: Hall answers Gould’s call NATHAN TAYLOR

t’s been an eye opening first month of pre-season training for Penrith Panthers AFL convert Josh Hall, who has not only spent the last four weeks trying to fit in, but also learn the game. The former Gold Coast Suns ruckman is the club’s latest ‘project player’, following in the footsteps of Fijian hotel porter turned NRL winger Eto Nabuli, who had a stint at Penrith in 2013. Speaking with the Weekender, the 25-year-old opened up about the challenges of switching from AFL to the NRL. “It’s been tough initially trying to fit in, I’ve been worried about making mistakes and that kind of stuff,” Hall said. “I haven’t played rugby league in seven or eight years, so it’s been a while, but once I get settled and find my feet, hopefully I can go from there.” Having grown up playing junior rugby league as a kid in Townsville, Hall was also a champion high jumper with aspirations of one day representing Australia at an Olympic Games. However, after he was overlooked for the 2010 Australian Commonwealth Games team, Hall decided to take a break from athletics and focus on his degree.

I

As part of his sports science studies, Hall attended training at the Townsville City Lions AFL club and quickly fell in love with the sport. Soon after, Hall joined a local team in the Townsville AFL competition where, after just four games, he attracted the attention of a Gold Coast Suns scout. Playing as a ruckman, Hall was drafted 94th in the 2012 AFL Draft by the Suns and, during his short career, ended up playing just seven senior AFL games before switching to league and signing with the Panthers back in September. “I grew up in Townsville watching the Cowboys play and also had a dream of playing league at a high level,” Hall said. “I was getting a bit stale with AFL of late and Gus (Phil Gould) got in touch with me about making the switch, so I jumped at the opportunity. “I thought it would be a great story for me to continue on my journey and hopefully I can achieve that NRL dream.” Due to his height of 198cm – the tallest at the club – Hall is primed to play on the wing for Penrith’s NSW Cup team in 2016. To assist Hall in his dream of making it in rugby league, he’s receiving expert advice from two of Penrith’s best including new specialist coach David Simmons and young gun Dallin Watene-Zelezniak.

HARNESS RACING

Close to home: Jade’s back in Penrith Story continued from » p. 72 With this weekend’s Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney being held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Close said she was excited to be returning home to Penrith to compete. “I haven’t seen my parents in quite some time, so it’ll be good to get back,” she said. “My parents think I’m crazy doing Ironman but they support me.” While training to be an Olympic athlete can be as taxing as you’d expect, Close admitted preparing for an Ironman competition was just as hard. “I train every day for Ironman, in all three disciplines,” she said. “The training is very similar but it’s also very different because it’s team vs individual. “I suppose instead of letting the whole team down, you’re just letting yourself down if you don’t perform well in an Ironman.” This Sunday’s second Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney will see over 1600 age group athletes compete at the Penrith Lakes complex. Triathletes, like Close, will first battle it out in a 1.9km swim before a 90km cycle and finishing up with a 21.1km run. Close revealed she wasn’t a fan of one discipline in particular. “I’m a bit of a sinker in the water but I can ride and run really well,” she said. Local residents should be aware that there will be changed traffic conditions around the Regatta Centre on Sunday.

Early Christmas gift for Penrith Paceway as new state-of-the-art stables are opened

A good crowd of officials was on hand for the opening of the new stables at Penrith Paceway NATHAN TAYLOR

T

he iconic Penrith Paceway is now home to a brand new stable complex, which was officially opened recently at a special cer-

emony. Penrith HRC President Max Laughton was on hand for the grand opening along with Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown and Penrith Paceway CEO Lorraine Pozza.

Mr Laughton thanked the Harness Racing NSW Board, Chairman of Harness Racing NSW Rex Horne and CEO John Dumesny for making the new stables possible. “I would also like to thank the engineers and builders of the complex for an excellent job,” Ms Pozza added. “This project will satisfy the needs of all the participants, trainers, stewards and clerks of the course thanks to its ‘roomy’ and well laid out design.”

The new stables were officially opened by Councillor McKeown and named in honour of the legendary Don Clough, Director of Penrith Paceway. “Over the years Don Clough has put a lot into our sport and, to this day, is still volunteering his time to harness racing,” Ms Pozza said. “We all know that Don gives his heart and soul to harness racing, therefore we are honoured to have him as one of our own.”

Around the grounds certainly an improvement for the Ducks after having just one victory to their name last year.

CRICKET: Penrith’s first grade cricket side are off to a very shaky start in Round 6 of the Sydney Grade Cricket competition. Playing in a two day match at Howell Oval against competition leaders Sydney University, Penrith won the toss and elected to bat first. Sydney were brilliant with the ball and managed to dismiss Penrith for just 126 runs. Penrith’s Jake Wholohan was best with the bat scoring 46. Sydney hit the crease later that afternoon and managed to reach Penrith’s total before the day’s play ended, scoring 7/139. With Sydney winning the first innings quite convincingly, both sides will return to action this Saturday morning to battle out the second innings.

NETBALL: The Penrith Netball Association will be holding a Come and Try Netball Day on Friday, December 4 from 5pm to 7pm. Held at Jamison Park Netball Complex, the day is open to all junior players who have not played at club level previously. It is designed to give both girls and boys a chance to experience netball before registering with a club. The Come and Try Netball Day is aimed at girls aged between 5-14 and boys 5-12. For more information, contact 4721 4319. FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers W-League team enjoyed a well-earned bye last weekend but will return to the pitch this Sunday afternoon against Canberra United. The match will be played at Central Coast Stadium, with Western Sydney’s women currently sitting in fourth place while Canberra United are one spot above them in third.

BASEBALL: After rain and a number of weeks of consecutive losses, the Penrith Panthers first grade side are back in business, defeating the Canterbury Vikings 4-0 in Round 10 of the NSW State Baseball League. Penrith will look for back to back wins this weekend when they take on Manly in Round 11.

FOOTBALL: The Western Sydney Wanderers lost their undefeated status and dropped from the top of the National Youth League table after a heavy 5-0 defeat to rivals Sydney FC. After only leading 1-0 at halftime, the Sky Blues turned it on in the second half. The Wanderers will enjoy a bye this weekend.

GRIDIRON: After another tough season the Nepean Ducks have finally chalked up their second and final win of the year, defeating the Northern Sydney Rebels 6-0 in Round 11 of the Gridiron NSW competition. Despite only winning two games all season, 2015 was

ade Close has represented her nation at the highest level, but now the 28-yearold former Penrith local is preparing to take on a brand new challenge that’s set to test her limits like never before. Based in Perth since the age of 17, Close was a member of the Australian women’s hockey team that finished fifth at the 2012 London Olympics. But after more than 50 caps with the champion Hockeyroos, Close decided to retire from the sport last month to take up a new challenge – Ironman triathlons. She’ll participate in the Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney in Penrith this weekend. “I came back from overseas and decided I didn’t want to play hockey anymore, I literally lost the passion for hockey in Australia,” Close told the Weekender. “I officially retired from the Australian team in May and stopped playing hockey altogether in October this year.” Close only took up Ironman triathlons 12 weeks ago, and competed in her first event earlier this month.
