Our hidden shame: Poverty doesn’t discriminate After a week with local charity Christ Mission Possible, journalist Cassandra O’Connor has discovered that no-one is immune to experiencing homelessness... he scruffy man sleeping on the bench in Hyde Park with a grocery bag tucked under his head is our common understanding of homelessness.

Yet homelessness frequently takes a different form; families that have gone through financial hardship; young people that have come from dysfunctional families; educated people who find themselves battling physical or mental illness.

Christ Mission Possible (CMP) is a local charity that coordinates a range of services for the homeless such as food nights, breakfasts, temporary accommodation, financial guidance and rapid rehousing.

Though they operate outside of Penrith too, it’s at their Kingswood base – the Rock Community Centre – where you can begin to understand the true nature of homelessness.

At 7.30am on Tuesday morning the regulars are already lining up outside.

They are waiting for 9am, when the food shop opens.

Last Tuesday there were over 80 families patiently sitting in the centre, huddling their cups of tea and coffee, eyeing the mounds of oranges, apples, pasta, rice, fresh vegetables and chickens.

Each have a number and in an orderly procession of strollers, wheelie bags, prams and grocery bags, Penrith’s destitute collect enough food to last them sometimes a week.

Poverty doesn’t discriminate.

There’s young mums with children hanging about their skirts, elderly in walkers, others in wheelchairs.

One man who doesn’t wish to be named tells me why he and one of his teenage daughters are collecting groceries.

“Not that long ago I was in a top level management role,” he said.

“I would provide for my wife and two daughters. Then, I was diagnosed with liver cancer and struggled with mental health issues.

“The bills just kept mounting and we were forced out of our home. We stayed with friends and family for a while, but it wasn’t long before we had to contact Housing NSW.” The family was told they didn’t meet the requirements for housing commission and found themselves in crisis accommodation with CMP. “We stayed at a place called ‘the farm’ and they helped us find a place in the private rental market,” he said.

“We now have a home, a roof over our heads, but we don’t have enough money to buy food. I am always scared DOCS will turn up and think we are not doing our job as parents.”

He tells me the system is broken.

“For 25 years I paid my taxes, but when my family needed help, the government was nowhere to be seen. In this day and age, I cannot believe we are living like this, in Australia,” he says exasperated.

Throughout the week, this same story was told to me over and over.

I met a nurse who couldn’t hold down a job because of his mental health issues; a 20-year-old man who suffers from migraines and is incapable of work, family upon family that had fallen through the cracks of the health system, then the cracks in the housing system too.

It dawned on me that you can have a roof over your head and still be homeless. But it is the first step to a better life, as one St Marys couple tell me.

Chrissy and Andy are an absolutely beautiful and inspiring pair who welcomed me into their home to tell me their experience of being homeless.

“About 12 months ago Chrissy became really sick,” Andy says, still concerned.

Nearly two years later, Ms Bartulis has regained custody of her son, now works in aged care, and has found a place in the community of The Church of the Rock.

“If I hadn’t been put in contact with CMP I would be the same person I was two years ago, I wouldn’t have got my son back,” she says.

Sadly, there’s a waiting list of about 90 families for CMP’s rapid rehousing

program. That’s 90 single mums with kids, young people escaping family issues, families with no place to go.

They are also the unlucky 90 who, for most, through no fault of their own, are crying out for a second chance.

“She suffered one major heart attack, one minor heart attack and a stroke. I had a cleaning business, but I had to wind it back and we lost it because I needed to care for Chrissy.

“I was then doing part time cleaning work but that eventually wound up. We lost just about everything but Chrissy is the one thing I cannot lose, I can rebuild everything but her.”

With no supporting family to turn to for help, they found themselves in crisis accommodation with CMP, organised through Housing NSW. “Temporary accommodation only lasts for 28 days, we were really stressed out,” Andy says.

“My doctors had told me I was on the verge of another heart attack, being so worried about not having a home,” Chrissy adds.

But CMP was able to find the couple a unit in St Marys through their rapid rehousing program. The real estate agents even allowed Chrissy to bring her hearing dog with her. The private rental property agreement will be transferred into their names in about four months.

“If it wasn’t for CMP I would probably have had another heart attack, I am so thankful for them and everything they have done for us,” Chrissy says.

Not one to take without giving back something in return, Andy now volunteers for CMP, cleaning their properties.

Around the corner in North St Marys, single mum Lisa Bartulis is equally grateful for the help she received from CMP. “It was August 25, 2012, and I was at the W.A.S.H House in Mt Druitt, for women needing help... I was there because I had lost custody of my son,” Ms Bartulis says.

Forget impersonating, Max says it’s a real acting gig ax Pellicano doesn’t class himself as an impersonator. Though the seasoned performer has been bringing Elvis to life on stage for over 20 years, Pellicano sees his show as more of an acting gig.

Getting the look isn’t cheap though. The ‘White Eagle’ costume that he wears on stage is an exact replica of the one Elvis wore in 1972, and cost $10,000 to create.

It’s not just about recreating the style though, Pellicano’s connection with “The King” extends to the group of musicians he performed with too.

“I’ve had the good fortune to work with a lot of the people that worked with Elvis.

I did shows with The Jordanaires and J.D. Sumner and The Stamps. So I’ve gotten to know a lot of the guys that used to work with Elvis,” he said.

Pellicano has also performed with Dolly Parton, Don Rickles, Helen Reddy and the late Davy Jones, but it is pop singer B.J. Thomas – who is most well known for his hit ‘Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head’ – that Pellicano has particularly fond memories of.

“A lot of stars, they don’t generally like somebody that’s impersonating somebody else, you know what I mean,” he said.

“It’s kind of like… if you’re going to be an artist they want you to be [an original].

But B.J. was great, he was very supportive and he was like: ‘hey, you know, do your thing, that’s your thing, do it’.”

While Elvis is long gone – regardless of the fanatics and their conspiracy theories that ‘The King’ is still alive – Pellicano has one question he would like to know from the man who had such a profound impact

on the music industry over the decades.

“The first time he heard his record on the radio what did he feel like? What was that feeling of recording something and hearing it on the radio? That would be the thing that I would love to know the most.

What’s that feeling like.”

“With me too it’s like I’m an actor, my first thing that I ever did was act and so I really do the Elvis show as an acting job, like I’m doing a musical,” he said.

“I’m not saying I’m an impersonator because I don’t look to sound identical to him or get plastic surgery to look exactly like him. My thing is a show, and I’m an actor and just like any actor you’re doing a character, you’re not impersonating somebody.”

Pellicano studied Dramatic Arts at the University of California and it was his first acting role after graduating in 1974 that led him to the Elvis show he now brings to audiences around the world – one that has gained him a reputation as the best Elvis impersonator in the world.

“My first show that I got was a show called ‘Bye Bye Birdie’, which is like a 50’s musical and the character Conrad Birdie was like a take off on Elvis,” Pellicano said.

“So then I did that for a long time and I met a promoter who wanted me to go to Hawaii and recreate the ‘Aloha from Hawaii’ concert. I was supposed to be in Hawaii for about two weeks and I ended up staying there three years.”

This led to a place in the ‘Legends in Concert’ show in Las Vegas, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Penrith audiences will have the chance to check out Pellicano’s acting chops when he comes to Evan Theatre on Saturday, August 2 and this time the show will include an 18-piece orchestra.

While he has travelled all over the world Pellicano has a soft spot for Australia, spending over 20 years visiting our shores.

“I’ve made a lot of friends there, I know a lot of people in Australia and you know it always gives me a lot of pleasure to be able to walk out on stage and I see people that I know out in the front rows and stuff like that, so it’s pretty cool,” Pellicano said.

There are many Elvis impersonators across the world, but Max Pellicano has a reputation as the best. So what does it take to bring such an iconic and beloved character to life?

“You’ve got to have a lot of hair,” he laughed before reflecting more seriously.

“What makes it special is creating the character on stage but creating his personality.”

“I think it’s becoming him on stage and having a sense of humour and stuff like that and really relating to the audience

irque Mother Africa is heading back to Australia after four years, bringing their critically acclaimed and energetic show to The Joan

in August.

The performance involves a mix of acrobatics and dance complete with traditional African costumes and music.

The circus elements of the show include contortionist, adagio, juggling and highwire feats.

Cirque Mother Africa has gained much praise from critics as well as capturing the hearts of audiences worldwide, performing their captivating two hour show to over two-million people. The group has just finished a sell-out season on Broadway, which is an amazing experience for any performer.

“To be honest I originally didn’t think about being on Broadway in any of the days of my life,” Silethemba Magonya said.

“The outcome and the turnout was

really incredible and we were really, really honoured to be presenting that one month of big shows every day. It’s quite a good point on our CV or on our profiles.”

Cirque Mother Africa was created by former street performer Winston Ruddle and gives talented young African performers the opportunity to be involved in this captivating and colourful production.

It brings audiences a taste of the traditional but there is also a modern element to it, which gives an insight into the new Africa. The performers bring their homelands to the show, coming together from different areas of the continent including Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Benin, Guinea, Ivory Coast and Tanzania.

Local audiences will get the chance to witness a performance that showcases amazing physical elements along with entertaining live music provided by the ‘In Africa Band’, which includes traditional instruments like the 20 stringed Kora, along with a trio of female vocalists.

Bachelor hype is building After years in the hands of other networks, the Olympics Games are officially coming back to Channel Seven. The broadcaster will air the 2016 Summer Olympics from Rio, the 2018 Winter Olympics from South Korea and the 2020 Summer Olympics from Tokyo. It’s understood the Games were sold for way less than experts anticipated at just $200m.

The asking price was $250m.

With the Commonwealth Games starting in Glasgow next week, Channel Ten has announced returning star Matt White will join the commentary team. White, who recently defected back to Ten from Channel Seven, will host the morning edition of ‘Glasgow Live’ alongside former Aussie athletes Leisel Jones and Steve Hooker. The Games get underway this Thursday.

Still on Ten, and season two of ‘The Bachelor Australia’ premieres on Wednesday, July 30 at 7.30pm. Last year this show attracted huge buzz for the network and will no doubt do well again. In the love seat this time is 31-year-old auctioneer Blake Garvey.

A really cool new series is airing on NatGeo next month. The four-part series, narrated by Rob Lowe, will feature 120 interviews including Monica Lewinsky, Courtney Love, Matthew Perry, Tony Blair and more. It begins Wednesday, August 6 at 7.30pm.

ABC1 is about to be renamed, simply to be known as ABC very soon. The change comes after extensive research indicated viewers watch the ‘ABC’ rather than ABC1. For me, I prefer to still call it Channel Two, for those of us who still remember analog TV. Those were the days!

I know you’ve all be waiting for this one… the airdate of ‘Sharknado 2’ is… Thursday, July 31 at 11.30am. The hugely hyped movie will air on Foxtel’s SyFy channel just one hour after its US broadcast. If you can’t watch it at the super early time, a prime time replay will take place.

“a different animal” King Buzzo is not a conformer, so expect something rather different from this new acoustic tour

f you know anything about The Melvins, you’d know that frontman and driving force behind the band Buzz Osborne isn’t one to be predictable.

“What I do has always kind of existed a little bit outside of the norm – I guess you could say that I’ve never really been much of a joiner,” he said.

To that end, Osborne, under the moniker of King Buzzo, has released his debut solo long player, ‘This Machine Kills Artists’, and the distortion is dialed way down in favour of a stark acoustic-only sound. But, if you think that grunge metaller Osborne is getting all folky, well you’d better think again.

“I have no interest in sounding like a bad version of James Taylor which is what happens when almost every rock and roller straps on an acoustic guitar. No thanks – ‘This Machine Kills Artists’ is a different kind of animal,” he said.

For the uninitiated, Osborne has, for the

past 30 years, constantly been redefining what we think of as heavy with The Melvins, whose albums such as ‘Ozma’, ‘Bullhead’, ‘The Bootlicker’ and ‘Houdini’ have influenced countless grunge rockers, punks and metalheads in equal measure.

Everyone from contemporaries Nirvana (Osborne even had a fair hand in their formation, introducing Kurt Cobain to Kirst Novoselic and Dave Grohl) and Soundgarden to more sonically visceral acts like Mastodon and Neurosis.

Aside from The Melvins, Osborne laid much of the sonic architecture for Faith No More frontman Mike Patton’s avantgarde metal outfit Fantomas and grindcore outfit Venemous Concept.

While there’s no denying Osborne’s influence in many genres, he said it wasn’t something he really thinks about.

“To be honest I don’t really see how we’ve influenced anything, but it’s cool that people think so. I’d say that we definitely have a few “brother” bands who are on a similar wavelength to what we’re doing but that’s about where it ends.”

When the Australian tour wraps up, Osborne said he’ll be looking to put the finishing touches on The Melvins’ 22nd record, ‘Hold it In’ due in October.

Although he added that Fantomas fans shouldn’t hold their breath for any new activity.

“It really doesn’t look like Fantomas will do another record but you never really know – it’s totally up to Mike,” he said.

“The new Melvins will be out in October so we’ll be doing a fair bit of touring.”

VOLUNTEERS To lie or not to lie? - is it wrong to break a promise? Is it only wrong if you get caught?

While the conscience may be torn on some of life’s big ethical questions; and community attitudes and public prejudices can make these decisions even more daunting at times, it is important to know that there is support out there.

Primary Ethics held its first ethics class in February 2011 and has now grown to become an organisation that has 1,500 active volunteers including mums and dads, grandparents and other members of the wider community teaching or organising ethics classes for 20,000 children in 300 schools. Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to bring ethics classes to children in the Penrith local government area. This Primary Ethics solution is offered

to public school children who don't go to Scripture classes.

“

This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.

”

Trained volunteers teach the Primary Ethics curriculum. Children are taught the basic principles of decision making that helps them determine what is right or wrong, or good or bad in most given situations.

Children sit in a circle and through the use of 'give-and-take' discuss modern ethical topics. Children are provided with material such as stories and pictures, then the trained Ethics Teachers promote conversations between the children and their peers. Individual topics are taught over a period of two or more lessons.

Primary Ethics is a charity that creates curriculum and attracts, recruits, vets and

trains volunteers to organise and teach ethics classes for NSW public primary school children - and they need your help.

Penrith RSL has partnered with Primary Ethics to help spread the word in the area – and also to encourage its staff to volunteer. Karen Harrison, HR manager at Penrith RSL, has volunteered to teach at Kingswood Public School on one of her non-work days. “I think these ethics classes are a wonderful initiative,” says Ms Harrison. “I have three adult daughters and a grandchild on the way. I want my family to live in a community with values and ethics. This is a great way for the kids who don’t go to religion classes to learn how to think about ethical issues.”

It is a dramatisation of the story that follows four Navy SEALs who were set the task of tracking a high-level member of al-Qaeda.

It is a story of survival in a confronting situation as the four men are led into an ambush in the mountains of Afghanistan where they become surrounded by the enemy.

The film addresses the themes of heroism and courage.

‘Lone Survivor’ was directed by Peter Berg and the cast includes Academy award nominee Mark Wahlberg and Australia’s own Eric Bana along with Emile Hirsch who starred in ‘Into The Wild’, Taylor Kitsch from TV series ‘Friday Night Lights’ and Ben Foster who joined Russell Crowe and Christian Bale in 2007’s ‘3:10 to Yuma’.

The film has had a mostly positive reception on movie review site Rotten Tomatoes.

If you’re in the mood for some adult themed laughs then you might want to head to the cinemas to check out ‘Sex Tape’. The raunchy comedy follows married couple Annie and Jay, played by Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel.

Though their relationship started out with an intense physical connection things have changed after 10 years together and two kids. In an attempt to spice up their love life the couple decide to make a three hour long sex tape. Of course it wouldn’t be a comedy unless there was tragedy, so upon waking the following morning Annie and Jay realise that their secret film has become not so secret, which sparks a race to destroy the video and keep their reputation in tact. What follows is the pair spending a night chasing leads and getting the help of friends they have roped in to retrieve the film that has been sent out to family and friends via the iCloud network.

Sex Tape was written by the movie’s star Jason Segel, along with Kate Angelo and Nicholas Stoller. It was directed by Jake Kasdan ,who also directed the 2011 comedy ‘Bad Teacher’ which starred Cameron Diaz.

MANIC STREET PREACHERS FUTUROLOGY Out Now Welsh alt rockers the Manic Street Preachers – or the ‘Manics’ as they are affectionately known – have a new album, and by all accounts it’s a solid release for the group that have been together for almost three decades. The album is titled ‘Futurology’ and is the band’s 12th studio release. It follows on from their 2013 album ‘Rewind The Film’.

The Manics are known for their political edge and impressive lyrical style, which is evident upon listening to the tracks from ‘Futurology’. You only have to look at the song titles, like ‘Let’s Go To War’ and ‘Misguided Missile’ to see that the Manics are on a mission. It is the same one they started all those years ago, to bring music to the masses that addresses social issues and wages war on the evils and injustices in the world.

The first track to be released from the album was ‘Walk Me To The Bridge’, which has a marching beat that is broken up by an uplifting chorus. On this release the Manics were joined by a substantial list of contributors including Nina Hoss, Green Gartside, Cian Ciaran and Georgia Ruth.

The Manics look to be on to a winner with ‘Futurology’ – it achieves what they set out to do as a band.

MotoGP 14 brings together world championship teams and riders from the 2014 MotoGP and is full of features to keep fans of the sport entertained.

Players will have their choice of race options, whether you want a quick race or a full weekend. Time attack allows you to test out your bike without the distraction of other competitors.

ortunate are they who’ve got hold of a bottle or two of Best’s Great Western Bin 0 Shiraz, a wine that’s been made since the late 1800’s but of which today only 800 cases are still made on average each year.

And although we know Henry Best planted his first Shiraz vines at Great Western, between Stawell and Ararat in Victoria in 1867, the actual year he created his first Bin O is uncertain. But what we do know is that since the Thompson family acquired the Best’s Great Western vineyards and winery in 1920, they’ve remained extraordinarily faithful “custodians” to Henry Best’s creation.

Now headed by fifth generation Ben Thompson, the family’s recently released the 2012 Best’s Bin 0 Shiraz that was made from hand-selected fruit sorted and fermented in small batches, so maintaining its reputation as an undisputed icon of the Great Western Shiraz style, and internationally acclaimed for years.

This 2012 has deliciously spicy dark fruit flavours and a great balance of acidity and smooth tannins for wonderfully enjoyable drinking. With just 800 cases available, it’s well worth the $85 asking price to enjoy with a slow roasted shoulder of lamb.

One to note: The Adelaide Hills has a well-deserved reputation as home to some of Australia’s best Sauvignon Blanc, and a 2013 Howard Vineyard Picnic label is typical of just how good the variety from this region can be. This one has full-on lemony citrus flavours coupled with hints of spice and gooseberry, making it an ideal companion with seafoods. Pay just $19.

he kids were all smiles last week when on Friday, July 11, Peppa Pig came to the Evan Theatre for three shows. It was much to the joy of the kids and parents who got to see the playful performance based on the popular children’s show.

The performance brought the British animated series to life on stage, giving audiences the chance to join the much loved Peppa Pig along with her brother George as they went out on a treasure hunt.

The pair were accompanied on their adventure by Danny Dog, Zoe Zebra, Pedro Pony and Polly Parrot. The show was packed full of sing-a-longs, games, problem solving and of course fun. There were plenty of Peppa Pig friends in the audience too, with the children bringing along their toy companions.

oils inside are temperature sensitive – before I simply squeezed it out and put it in my hair.

I felt like I was using a lot of product when I was applying it but looking at the package afterward, it seemed just as full as before.

Following the instructions, I coated my hair in the product – your hair must be dry – and left it in for half an hour, which is the minimum time recommended by the creators, who suggest the longer the better.

Being oil based, the main ingredients are coconut, almond and argan oils. My hair looked wet but surprisingly the oil didn’t drip or transfer to my clothing.

To wash out I shampooed twice, just to make sure all the oil was out of my hair.

For the next three days my hair had a ‘just cut, washed and blow-dried’ look and I didn’t have to wash it as frequently.

By the end of the week I felt as though my hair was back to its usual self, which was expected given that the product is recommended for use once a week.

My verdict: this is not an essential product but if you want silky, smooth hair it’s worth a try.

Hello Hair have taken the social media world by storm with savvy marketing

I am one of those people who has constant battles with their hair. It never seems to do what I want it to do and in addition to that, it never looks like I want it to (have you seen the way celebrities have the perfect combination of volume and silkiness at the same time? I want that!).

And don’t even get me started on when it does look like I want it to because then it just falls out or un-curls itself in under an hour.

The thing about these constant battles is that I have always just accepted that this is the way that it is always going to be, so I have never bothered trying to do something about it.

By saying never, I mean until two weeks ago.

In a fit of hair-rage I began researching hair taming treatments with the hope that I would find something, anything to make me feel better about my hair.

As a sucker for cool packaging, Hello Hair immediately caught my eye. The brand’s creators have expertly used social media to their advantage, taking the Instagram world by storm – they have 86,000 followers – and it was browsing here that I came across the product.

It is an all-natural treatment that allegedly reconstructs and strengthens stressed, damaged hair and while doing that, soothes the scalp and alleviates dandruff.

As an avid user of heat products to try and control my hair, I knew that my locks could use a little TLC so I forked out $15 – yes this is incredibly cheap – and purchased the product.

Literally two days after I purchased the product online it had arrived on my doorstep, which is practically unheard of, especially when shipping is free.

Hello Hair comes in a cute, white pack that looks similar to a squeezy baby food sachet with a blue logo on the front – simple, just how I want my hair treatment to be.

And it was just that.

The how-to-use instructions were very basic and easy to follow and any questions I had about the product were answered in the FAQs on their website.

Rare jewels we can only dream of I’ve seen a lot in the news over the last few months about large, rare diamonds and gems selling for huge prices at auction. These are often the size and rarity that one can only dream of owning!

Last year the world’s largest known ‘Fancy Vivid Pink’ diamond sold at auction for approximately AU$89million.

This oval shape took over 20 months to cut and polish to preserve its weight and colour intensity.

Still on the topic of pinks, a 1.56ct Fancy Red diamond from the Argyle Diamond Mine was purchased recently for over AU$2million. The most prestigious pinks from the year’s yield at the mine go on show around the world in the Argyle Pink Diamond Tender.

Another fancy colour – blue – is said to be rarer than pink has also been a hot topic in the industry. A huge 122.52ct blue diamond was uncovered in a mine in South Africa this year.

This same mine seems to have been responsible for the majority of the notably large blues in the world.

A polished pear shape blue originally name ‘The Blue’ sold for a record US$23.8million in May this year. This is the largest ‘Fancy Vivid Blue’ that GIA have ever seen!

The new owner, world-renowned jeweller Harry Winston has renamed it ‘The Winston Blue’. Harry Winston’s company has a dream to ‘acquire the most desirable and unique gems’ and that dream seems to be progressing full steam ahead.

Last on my list is an unexpected one. A natural pearl measuring approximately 17mm has just gone under the hammer for $1.46million via a British auction house.

Natural pearls are said to be found in only one of thousands of pearl oysters which drives their value up. Combined with the size and quality of this rare find it was still unexpected that this item went for over three times its estimated auction price.

There’s more to home loans than the rate If the current official cash rate were a man, he’d be tall, dark and charming. And if you’re in the market for a home loan, you have no doubt noticed all the attractive interest rates out there. The heat is on if you want to buy a property or review your rate, but do these hot rates actually stack up?

Is the rate subject to an introductory period?

Home loan providers often advertise a super low rate to attract customers, but what may not be clear is that this rate may only apply for an introductory period. When comparing mortgage rates, it’s important to know whether the advertised rate will last, or if it will revert to a higher rate later.

If you find yourself committed to a home loan contract that includes an intro period, you could soon find that the interest rate and monthly repayments are higher than you were prepared for. This may increase the amount of interest you will pay over the life of the loan. If you don’t increase your monthly repayment to reflect the higher interest rate, less of your regular payment will go toward the principal, increasing the length of the time it will take you to pay off the loan.

How does fitness feature in your life?

I first started pole dancing when my mum bought me a voucher for Christmas four years ago. Starting the first term at Polercise Penrith I didn’t know what to expect, I was a bit nervous and scared but after a few lessons I fell in love with the sport. It is very different to any other exercise I had done.

With a background in personal training and group fitness, pole dancing was definitely a challenge and that is what I still love about it today.

I look back at when I started pole four years ago and I can tell you there a so many benefits to the sport; increased confidence, increased self-esteem, increased coordination, increased flexibility and did I mention increased strength!

I love pole dancing so much I became an instructor at Polercise in 2012. I instruct beginner classes through to advanced. It is not a job for me but another way I can help someone increase their confidence/strength and show them how much fun it is!

I am currently focusing on doubles pole dancing. Doubles is a different world; Deanna and I have trained for just over a year together in doubles pole dancing and have been awarded Runners Up in a competition back in April. This awarded us with entry into the NSW Pole Dancing Championships at the end of this month.

The hardest thing about pole dancing is keeping it professional. Pole dancing is a growing community, only getting bigger. I

do believe it is accepted more in society as a sport, and so it should be as it has so many benefits just like any other exercise.

I was talking to a friend this week who is a primary school PE teacher and he mentioned the amount of kids he sees who get a note from parents to excuse them from doing activity. One of the reasons used is that they don’t want their child injured or put in a situation where they might feel embarrassed if they are not particularly sporty.

A review of published scientific literature on the rates of injury suggest that the benefits of junior sports far outweigh the risks of injury.

Sometimes we hear about a horrible accident in a sport which takes out of context the hundreds of thousands of people playing it that don’t get injured and what is overlooked is the huge benefits that these players are receiving.

Physical activity offers numerous physical and mental health benefits for children, as well as the opportunity to master new motor skills.

Team sports in particular offer participants the opportunity to develop social skills such as social inclusion, peer support and self-esteem.

In a feature, ‘Bumps and Bruises’ in the most recent issue of Australasian Leisure Management, Dr Carter writes: “occasional bumps and bruises are expected when children play sport, yet high profile injuries, either those that receive national media attention or involving elite level athletes, can have a major influence on the sports that parents choose for their children”.

The results of Dr Carter’s review actually showed participation in organised sport is preferable due to the demonstrated risk management policies and procedures, such as safe play, coaching, refereeing and first aid, compared to unstructured sport and leisure activities.

It’s very understandable that a parent doesn’t want a child hurt in any way, but to limit sport or physical activity exposure may do more harm than good.

From less co-ordination or fitness, reduced social networking, peer interaction to reduced confidence. A well conducted sports program offers a whole host of health benefits on top of the obvious physical ones.

Why getting your dog desexed is important

The blessed life being dependent on God

Pyometra is a common disease in undesexed female dogs that requires major surgery. Pyometra is a serious infection of the uterus that results in the accumulation of pus within the cavity of the uterus. It is generally seen in older female cats and dogs who have not been desexed.

Pyometra can become life threatening especially if the uterus ruptures inside the body. Untreated pyometra can cause dehyration, kidney failure and eventual death from infection and toxin accumulation.

What causes a pyometra? Each time a dog has a season (generally twice a year), she undergoes hormonal changes. These changes affect the uterus and cervix and make infection more likely. Infection is usually caused by a very common organism called E. Coli. The disease usually becomes apparent several weeks or months following heat.

What are the signs of pyometra? Pyometra is obviously only seen in females and can occur at any age but more commonly occurs in dogs over the age of six. Early signs can be subtle and could include increased licking around the back end or just being a bit tired and not as hungry as usual. In the advanced stages you may notice that she drinks lots of water and sometimes you may even find a reddish-brown discharge coming from the back end.

Some dogs will have a distended abdomen and become very depressed and tired.

How is pyometra diagnosed? A good history is generally suggestive of pyometra but x-rays/ultrasound and blood tests are generally needed to confirm the diagnosis. Once confirmed, the best treatment option is surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus as soon as possible. Some animals are too sick for an anaesthetic and need to be stabilised prior to surgery.

Can it be prevented? Yes! The only way to prevent this condition is by having your dog desexed. If you are not intending to breed your dog, then she should be desexed at anytime from six months of age. Not only does desexing prevent pyometra and cancers of the reproductive tract, but also breast cancer if done before her first season.

Throughout much of our lives we are taught to be independent; to grow up and to be able to stand on our own two feet and look after ourselves.

And while in many ways this is good, learning to be responsible and taking on skills for life and living, sadly, for many people this means to live a life independent of God; to live a life where God, at best, is kept at arm’s length, or at worst, is not included at all.

Jesus says that our lives should be the very opposite. In the Bible’s book of Matthew we find Jesus saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.”

Jesus is simply saying that we will experience “the blessed life” when we recognise that without God are lives are in fact poor and that we having nothing of real value.

Jesus is challenging us to see that because God made us, He knows what is best for us.

Therefore, we will find true meaning, purpose and fulfilment in life when we recognise that the best way to live is the way God intended for us.

These are challenging ideas but Jesus is urging us to see that life should be lived not independent of God but fully dependent in Him. Real life, true life, the best life, belongs to people who are happy and keen to say; “God, without you, I am poor in spirit; please help me to look to Jesus and learn from him how I can live in a way that is pleasing to you.”

McGuigan’s is famed across the world Hunter Valley winemaker Neil McGuigan has long extolled the value of having a winery cellar door – and while his gets 120,000 visitors a year, he says he was gobsmacked on a recent overseas trip to find out just how far they had travelled.

“I was in Bangkok, and after a winemakers dinner two Scottish people came up to me. They saw our McGuigan banner and said they’d just visited Australia, been in the Hunter, visited our winery and, yes, bought some of our wine.

“Then a couple of days later in a taxi in the UK the driver saw my McGuigan shirt motif, said he’d been in the Hunter nine years before – and that he’d bought two cases of my wine.

“Blow me, a couple of days after that in Belfast I’d been launching our Black Label Reserve wines to the media there, mentioned the value of a cellar door, and after a story appeared in a local paper about it, a blogger put up that he’d been to our cellar door just a month earlier.”

Finally on his return to Australia, Neil was promoting his wines in Melbourne to managers of a supermarket chain, when one told him he’d just come back from the Hunter – and yes, visited McGuigan’s Cellar Door and done a nice little bit of personal buying.

McGuigan’s is at 477 McDonald’s Road, Pokolbin and is open daily for free tastings from a couple of dozen wines.

PENRITH’S #1 GUIDE FOR OLDER RESIDENTS

After years of exploring the Blue Mountains, Bruce Cameron has collected more than a few stories

life spent exploring, bush walking and climbing through the Blue Mountains has given Bruce Cameron a passion for the wilderness surrounding Penrith and its great history, which he has, over many years, compiled into a book.

The history of the section of Blue Mountains National Park located between the Nepean River and Wentworth Falls is explored in A History of the Blue Labyrinth, through the stories and accounts of people and resources from the past.

A

Mr Cameron, having spent his lifetime enjoying the wonders of the national park, spent countless hours researching, visiting historical sites and writing.

“It is not just a text book written from a swivel chair, it is actually a product of being out in the bush. I spent thousands and thousands of hours roaming around the Blue Labyrinth trying to absorb what’s out there,” he said.

“I really enjoyed hearing the stories of residents and people with connections to the area, and I almost felt obliged to pass on their stories, their account of the area’s history.”

“I was moved to do it out of public interest. I had so many people contacting me after my first edition, which was a much

smaller paper back, asking for a copy or wanting to hear more stories,” he said.

The text in the hard-cover book is complemented by both colour and black and white images, as well as maps and excerpts from historic newspapers and resources.

“It is also something that I thought was worth doing to protect the area from things like urban sprawl. In 50 years, if there is pressure placed upon using the area as a resource, this book can be used as a document to help keep the area preserved in its natural state forever,” Mr Cameron said.

There is a chapter of the book dedicated to the Nepean River, which touches on its historical uses that many people in the

local area are not likely to have known.

“All the activities that went on down at Nepean Gorge are just amazing. They had pianos on barges, they used to have parties on the river and there used to be groups that would go up the river on barges shooting wallabies – it really is fascinating,” Mr Cameron said.

A History of the Blue Labyrinth is suitable to be read by anyone, from local residents and bush walkers to academics and is an easy read for people aged eight and above.

“I didn’t want to make it a laborious read.

The future demand for residential accommodation is one of the most significant consequences of Australia’s ageing population.

A report by the Productive Ageing Centre has found that 30 per cent of seniors who were surveyed for the study stated that they were considering moving to a smaller residence.

Of these people who were considering downsizing, 40 per cent indicated they would choose to move to a dwelling with three or more bedrooms.

The most popular motivating factors to downsize were not being physically able to maintain their current home and the cost of maintaining their home or yard.

“Navigating the aged care system can be complex, but the Fee Estimator will help older people access personalised information to help them prepare for aged care.”

Ms Scott said the fee estimator has been made available as part of the aged care changes that came into effect on July 1.

“People can call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to talk to a real person who will help them work through the fee estimator, or they can go online and use the estimator themselves.

“I encourage residents of the Nepean Valley who want to find out more about what choices are available for them when it comes to aged care to visit www.myagedcare.gov.au.”
