A case of life imitating art, is 2014 the new 1984?

George Orwell’s classic 1984 is now a stage play, and actor David Whitney says audiences will be shocked by how eerily believable the book’s predictions about technology and politics really are.

espite being written more than six decades ago, George Orwell’s classic dystopic novel 1984 is more relevant than ever, with a theatrical production using technology to explore its themes.

Critically acclaimed theatre company ‘shake & stir’ debuted their hi-tech version of 1984 two years ago in Brisbane, with shows sold out after garnering major praise.

After the success of its first run, the production has returned for a national tour, with a limited season at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre from Thursday, April 3 until Saturday, April 5.

Considered to be one of the most influential books of all time, 1984 was written

by Orwell in 1948 and paints a bleak picture of a dystopian future.

Set in the nation of Oceania, which is constantly at war with an outside force, 1984 tells of a society where thought police patrol the streets, cameras watch every move and all citizens are brainwashed into worshipping the dictatorship’s symbolic leader, Big Brother.

In this oppressive atmosphere, government writer Winston pursues his own personal rebellion against the state when he begins a forbidden affair with his mysterious co-worker Julia, but must pay the price when the duo are discovered.

While shake & stir’s stage adaptation does not stray significantly from Orwell’s much-acclaimed book, it incorporates digital technology into the production to emphasise themes and create an ominous atmosphere.

“It’s a very faithful adaptation of the book in terms of story and in terms of the feel of the world that’s created, but the great thing that shake & stir have done with it is to use technology from 2014 to help tell the story,” said cast member David Whitney.

“We’ve got a big wall of plasma television screens, which allow us to get inside the main character’s head as well as to create the world of surveillance that is very much part of Big Brother and 1984,” he said.

Although CCTV is an accepted reality of our lives, 1984 takes the concept further and imagines a world with government surveillance in private homes, provoking thought in audiences about the dangers of a digital future.

“The technology is kind of really familiar to young audiences but the use of it and application of it that Orwell foreshadowed in 1948, I think it’s quite a shock for them [audiences] to realise that’s where it could be heading,” Whitney said.

Beyond the flashy technology, 1984 also has a strong political message at its core, warning about dictatorial governments and the power of politicians to control information.

Although the play doesn’t force any particular political view on audiences, there are many parallels between the ruling party in 1984 and the tactics of modern governments on both sides of the spectrum.

“It’s not preaching a message, except I suppose it’s a cautionary tale, and it’s up to different audiences to hear the resonances that are there today, still in the original story. When I came off the [stage the] other night, someone in the audience said ‘oh you’re just like this particular current federal politician’, not only in the way I look but in the way I behave and use language,” Whitney said.

Whitney plays the character of O’Brien, an elite government official who investigates Winston and Julia and handles the punishment and re-education of the couple when they are caught breaking the law.

Despite playing such an antagonistic character, Whitney was able to get into the mindset of O’Brien and said he enjoyed the role.

“You have to empathise with any character you’re playing, you have to understand what makes them tick and try to understand how they operate and why

they operate. He has a very strong set of beliefs… I certainly believe he believes the things he says, he completely believes he’s in the right, there’s no doubt in his mind whatsoever,” he said.

This is Whitney’s first production with shake & stir theatre company, and he was drawn to joining the cast of ‘1984’ after watching a recording of a performance from the highly praised 2012 run of the production.

“There’s so many things within the book that still happen today, in fact probably happen more insidiously today with governments of various persuasions. It’s a story I think is really important to continue to tell, and because I had the opportunity of seeing this production before I was in it, I was really happy to be part of such a quality show,” he said.

With overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and a strong reaction from play-goers, Whitney said that the production will entertain audiences and provoke thought.

“I think audiences almost feel like they’ve been on an hour and a half rollercoaster, but certainly the feedback we’re getting, they’re quite shocked at the end.”

‘1984’ will show at the Q Theatre at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre from Friday, April 4 until Saturday, April 5.

‘Celtic Illusion’ is coming to Rooty Hill on April 12 and is the brainchild of Anthony Street, an acclaimed dancer and magician who also stars in the show.

Street dances with a cast of Australian performers who skillfully capture the up tempo, spirited look of Irish dancing.

The show is set to authentic Celtic music composed by Angela Little, who worked on Baz Lurhmann’s ‘Australia’.

A troupe of dancers will perform in sync with Little’s composition, creating thunderous rhythms that will have the crowd tapping along with their feet.

“It was important that I chose the right composer for this show. I believe it’s the music that takes the choreography to a more complete artistic level. Having Angela compose the music was the best move I made in making this show,” Street said.

‘Celtic Illusion’ will be held at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, April 12 at 8pm.

asmanian stars The Wolfe Brothers will be joining a line-up of country musicians to perform at Penrith Working Truck Show next month.

The four piece band, who became famous on ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ and had a huge year in 2013 touring alongside veteran country singer Lee Kernaghan, will perform at the Museum of Fire in Penrith on Sunday, April 6.

Their appearance is part of the Penrith Working Truck Show, and other country stars that will attend include duo McAlister Kemp, rising act Kaylens Rain, Buddy Goode, Kaylee Bell, Dan Murphy and Victoria Avenue.

The Wolfe Brothers are made up of siblings Nick and Tom Wolfe, and their best friends guitarist Brodie Rainbird and drummer Casey Kostiuk.

They first began playing music together in their high school years, and formed The Wolfe Brothers after graduating, doing gigs at pubs in Tasmania for six years.

After coming second in the popular reality show ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ in 2012, The Wolfe Brothers’ profile was boosted and they released their debut album ‘It’s On’, which featured three Top 10 singles

English Rain alented singer-songwriter Gabrielle Aplin will be returning to Australia for two intimate, acoustic performances. The English musician recently announced she would be visiting in May and June, with a show at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory on Sunday, June 1.

It follows on from Aplin’s first Australian show last year, when she supported Ed Sheeran’s concert with fellow British musician Passenger on a sold-out tour.

Aplin has been writing and recording songs since she was 15-years-old, and initially gained a fan base through posting videos of her original compositions and covers on YouTube, getting millions of views.

Her first album ‘English Rain’ is reminiscent of musicians such as Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, and debuted at number 22 on the ARIA Albums chart.

ith the school holidays quickly approaching, Sydney Olympic Park has a program of entertaining kids activities to keep families busy. The venue will be hosting a ‘Kids in the Park’ program, with options to suit every taste, age and budget.

It will be held every day of the school holidays, from Saturday, April 12 through until Sunday, April 27 with more than 50 activities on offer.

It’s no deal for game show It seems the axe has finally been swung on ‘Deal or No Deal’. Host Andrew O’Keefe has confirmed Channel Seven has no intentions of filming any new episodes in the near future. In case you didn’t know, Seven has been showing repeats of ‘Deal’ at 5pm for some time. I think Seven should either buy the ‘Family Feud’ format or air episodes from the US instead.

Talk show host Jimmy Fallon has been seen on Foxtel for some time and now he’s finally made his way to free-to-air television via ABC2. ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’ is now airing weeknights on ABC2 at 7.30pm. Comedy Channel will still premiere the episodes first with the ABC screening them two days after their US showing. The show has been rating highly.

Two popular shows are heading back to Foxtel over the next couple of months. Aussie prison drama ‘Wentworth’ will return for a second season from May 20 on SoHo, while ‘Veep’ will have its season three premiere on Monday, April 7 at 5.30pm on Showcase.

Remember the show ‘SlideShow’? No, not many people do, however the US are about to get their own version with Rove McManus as host. Rove will host the US version titled ‘Riot’, which pits two teams improvising on a floor titled at a 22.5 degree angle.

Good news for fans of a few NBC shows that air here in Australia as they’ve all been renewed for further seasons. Fire drama ‘Chicago Fire’ will return for a third season. Fantasy drama ‘Grimm’ has been awarded a fourth season while comedy ‘Parks and Recreation’ picks up a seventh season.

Terrible news for American sports fans after free-to-air broadcaster ONE HD announced they were dumping Major League Baseball (MLB) and National Football League (NFL) from their schedules in 2014. Now, you won’t be able to watch them unless you have Foxtel or a digital streaming service.

Starring: Johnny Knoxville & Jackson Nicoll Anyone familiar with Johnny Knoxville will know what to expect with ‘Bad Grandpa’, a hidden camera movie that delivers plenty of politically incorrect, crude humour.

The movie begins with 86-year-old widower Irving, who gets given temporary custody of his eight-year-old grandson Billy when his daughter has to go to jail. When Billy’s deadbeat dad finds out, he demands that his son be returned to him and so Irving embarks on a wild road trip with his grandson getting some inappropriate life experience on the way.

From visiting strip clubs to engaging in petty crime, the makers of ‘Bad Grandpa’ have put the intergenerational duo in every situation they can think of that will shock and amuse the audience.

Although it’s definitely not subtle or intellectual humour, ‘Bad Grandpa’ is still a funny movie and the ending is surprisingly touching and mature for a Knoxville creation.

JOHNNY CASH OUT AMONG THE STARS Out Now

Another animated film has hit the screens, with the sweet and funny ‘Mr Peabody & Sherman’ sure to amuse kids.

The titular character, Mr Peabody, is a super intelligent dog who can talk and spends his life researching science and technology. He stumbles upon a neglected baby one day and adopts him, giving him the name Sherman.

While being under the guardianship of a dog would be an unusual enough childhood, Sherman also has the added excitement of using Mr Peabody’s time machine to explore history and get an education. His trips throughout the different eras give him a huge, first-hand knowledge of history, which he uses to correct classmate Penny on his first day of school.

Penny begins bullying and taunting Sherman, and he reacts by biting her, drawing himself to the attention of the school principal and a child protection agent who tries to reclaim Sherman from his canine owner.

With the authorities hot on their heels, Mr Peabody and Sherman have to band together and fight for their right to be a family.

Johnny Cash is one of the most beloved classic country musicians, and 11 years after his death a new posthumous album has been released. The 12 tracks on ‘Out Among The Stars’ were recorded in 1981 and 1984 but due to a lack of support from Cash’s record company, were never commercially released.

They remained undiscovered for many years until Cash’s son was cataloguing his parents’ archives two years ago and stumbled upon the unheard tracks.

The album’s release has been keenly anticipated by the country music industry, with fans eager to get their hands on some new Johnny Cash material. The first single from the album, a cover of the love song ‘She Used to Love Me A Lot’, was released earlier this month, along with a remix by Elvis Costello.

There’s also a duet with June Carter Cash (‘Baby Ride Easy’) and country legend Waylon Jennings on ‘I’m Movin’ On’. Recorded in two studios in Nashville and produced by Billy Sherrill, famed for his ‘countrypolitan’ style, the music on ‘Out Among The Stars’ reveals an important chapter in Cash’s music career and is definitely worth listening to, even if only to satisfy curiosity about the lost songs of a country legend.

This spooky, animated role-playing game combines elements of action, quest and adventure. Players act as the legendary Hundred Knight, an extremely powerful demon that acts on the behalf of Metallia, a marsh witch who lives in a swamp.

Metallia has been caught up in a long power struggle against rival witch Malia, and for 100 years they have been fighting to gain control of the neighbouring land of Madea.

Metallia tasks the player with doing her bidding, giving the Hundred Knight a variety of quests and jobs to do in pursuit of her goal of spreading her swamp across Madea and finally achieving full power.

With the supernatural setting and themes, the Hundred Knight also has different magical powers available to use. As the game progresses, a thicker plot starts to unweave about the long-standing witch wars.

A shiraz that’s worth the $200 tag DAVID ELLIS

t’s not every day I’ve the chance to enjoy a $200 wine, but just such an opportunity came my way a couple of weeks back when I shared a bottle of 2012 Best’s Thomson Family Shiraz from Best’s Wines at Great Western, in the Grampians north-west of Melbourne.

And what a WOW factor it turned out to have. Made from fruit hand-harvested off just 15 rows of some of the oldest, most-gnarled Shiraz vines in Australia (planted

CBD goes vintage for festival fun SATURDAY, MARCH 22 IN PENRITH CBD ig crowds turned out on a beautiful day last Saturday for the annual Penrith Festival held along High Street.

With bright sun shining, thousands had fun checking out the various stalls and events at the Festival, organised by the Penrith CBD Corporation.

The kids loved the free entertainment including the Lorax Spectacular, Smurfs 2 show and the animal petting zoo.

The festival was highlighted by a fantastic parade at 12.30pm, great vintage fashions and amazing stalls and displays from local businesses.

After all the fun, many locals then headed across to the Penrith Panthers match to watch a great victory. The festival has been hailed by many as the best ever.

f you didn’t know it, March has been ‘Dummies Month’, celebrating the popular series of books that give advice on topics from cooking and fitness to personal finance and technology.

Know how to relax You need to know how to let go of tension, relax your body, and quiet your mind. There is no one right way to relax.

Attaining a state of greater relaxation need not be limited to formal approaches.

Any activity that distracts you from the

You can usually tell if you’re getting enough sleep if you wake up rested and can get through the day without feeling tired. By the way, getting too much sleep (more than eight hours) may not be so good for you, either.

Be organised for less stress It’s important to feel a sense of control over your environment. A cluttered and disorganised life leads to a stressed life.

Getting organised means developing effective organisational strategies and tools. For many, clutter is the prime culprit. For others, the lack of an organisational strategy becomes the roadblock.

f you think traffic is a problem in Penrith these days, spare a thought for people half a century ago when cars were backed up from the Penrith CBD all the way to St Marys as the region flocked to catch the newest and biggest show in town.

The day was Thursday, April 16, 1964 and it will be long remembered as the day a Penrith icon was born.

An icon that didn’t just bring the community together back then, but is still doing so some 50 years on.

Next month the Penrith Paceway together with the local harness racing community will celebrate its biggest milestone yet – 50 years of harness racing in Penrith.

Although there had been a racing track at the current Penrith Paceway site since the early 1920’s, harness racing didn’t offi-

cially begin until that day in April when the first registered meeting was held.

According to Penrith Paceway CEO of 16 years, Lorraine Pozza, Show Society President Dr Maurice Renshaw worked tirelessly for a long time to secure a trotting licence for Penrith.

“A special act of parliament was enacted to place Penrith outside the 30 mile (48km) limit that was in force at the time and had prevented a licence being granted to the city,” she said.

“By the legislation, Penrith would be declared a country area for trotting purposes. Dr Renshaw indicated that meetings would probably not be held during the winter months but would start early in the spring racing season.

“Dr Renshaw had been closely pursuing the allocation of a licence throughout the past year and the major breakthrough came when chief secretary Mr C. Kelly inspected the Penrith Showground area.”

When the licence was finally given the green light in 1964, Penrith spectators streamed towards the showground from

all directions from mid-afternoon to obtain a vantage point for the opening race at 7.30pm.

The bookmakers ring had over 40 bookies with a waiting list of another 20 and crowds were in excess of 7,000 people, which tested the capacity of the ground at the time.

The opening night didn’t run without its fair share of teething problems though with leading horses in the first two races visibly affected by the glare the photofinish flood lamps produced.

But despite all the challenges of opening night, people continued to return to the Paceway in their droves for decades as it was the only place to witness top level harness racing in their own backyard, and still is.

In 1984, a major addition that was the main grandstand was installed but it wasn’t until 1999 when the Penrith Paceway would undergo its biggest transformation thus far courtesy of a huge range of improvements brought about by current president, Max Laughton.

Along with his fellow directors, Mr Laughton decided to make the bold but necessary move to extend the track from 764 metres to half a mile (804 metres).

He also decided to introduce a registered club for punters and families to enjoy whilst spending a night at the races.

“1999 was a memorable time in our club’s history but we did have one particular teething problem back then,” Ms Pozza explained.

“When we first opened the club in 1999, we had a major blackout and we had to use candles… it was ‘Club by Candlelight’.

It was quite unexpected and forced us to build a little substation on Ransley Street to prevent it from happening again.

“Because we had everything running at the one time, including the track lights and the kitchen, the power was overloaded. It was a quirky moment in our history but our patrons thought it was a fantastic little novelty.”

With the Penrith Paceway entering its 50th year, what’s next on the cards for Penrith’s proudest icon?

In January next year, the track is set to undergo another extreme makeover with the radius on the home turn to be expanded from 77 metres to 82 metres, for safety reasons.

A new stable complex will also be built and the brick fences surrounding the site will be torn down to give it a much more inviting curb appeal.

“These future changes will renew and modernise the complex,” Ms Pozza said.

“We are very proud to be in the middle of town, we are very proud to be on Station Street and we are really looking forward to staying here for another 50 years.”

“There will be plenty of racing legends in attendance on the night including the family of the late Merve Adams, who was our first ever race winner back on April 16, 1964. Merve was our ringmaster here for

many years and is steeped in history here at Penrith Showground,” Ms Pozza said.

“The main race will be sponsored by local identity, Ross Sinclair, who started supporting the Paceway some 45 years ago. We are honoured to have Ross on board for this very special occasion.”

April is set to be a big month for Penrith Paceway who will also celebrate a number of milestone harness racing events includ-

ing the 20th anniversary of the Chippys/ PFD Cup on Thursday, April 10 as well as the 45th anniversary of the $50,000 Schweppes Renshaw Cup on Thursday, April 17.

“April is a month for all to look forward to. Top horses, top entertainment and top facilities all happening at the excitement track of Penrith Paceway,” Ms Pozza added.

By cleaning out my wardrobe before the beginning of autumn, I thought I was being super clever and proactive but instead, I may have missed out on being part of one of the most ingenious initiatives yet.

Myer – which happens to be my ‘go to’ department store – has teamed up with Salvos Stores to encourage people to donate their pre-loved clothing to charity through an initiative called Fashion Rescue. When I say team up, I mean they are offering anyone who donates their pre-loved clothing to a Salvos op shop a $10 Myer voucher.

What a brilliant idea!

There is a catch though, the $10 voucher can only be used when you’re spending over $50 in Myer – don’t stress, you’d be lucky to find something there for less anyway!

For anyone who loves shopping, who has an excessive amount of clothes they don’t want or need and hasn’t already done their seasonal clean out, could there be a more perfect partnership?

All you have to do is pop into a Salvos store with an armful of clothes and bam! Say hello to a Myer shopping spree... well, a small, $10 to be exact, excuse to have one.

“Following a successful trial in Victoria last year, we’re excited to take Fashion Rescue national and encourage the recycling and reuse of clothing as well as supporting local Australian communities through the Salvos Stores,” said Myer Executive General Manager of Merchandise, Adam Stapleton.

I did have a small concern about the initiative though... surely Myer could have just donated the worth of the vouchers straight to the Salvos rather than bother with the whole initiative but then again, it is a partnership right?

How does fitness feature in your life?

I am a Personal Trainer at Anytime Fitness in Emu Plains. My journey into the fitness industry began in 2009 when I enrolled in a Bachelor of Health Sciences, majoring in Human Movement at the University of Sydney and graduated from that in 2011.

Following that I completed a Masters of Exercise Physiology at the University of Sydney taking a further two years. At the same time that I was completing my Masters degree I was also completing my Certificate III and IV in Fitness. I am also Head Strength and Conditioning Coordinator at Nepean Rowing Club.

Top three tips for good health 1. You are what you eat. Your food choices will reflect in the way that you look and feel. The better quality food that you eat the better you will look and feel. Try to eat as little processed food as possible.

2. You don’t need to exercise for hours and hours. Interval training is a great way to lose fat and get fitter in a fraction of the time.

3. Don’t forget to recharge your batteries.

Good quality sleep of seven to nine hours a night is very important for adults. Studies have indicated that sleep plays a role in metabolism, immune function, learning and memory.

Activities like gardening, household chores and playing with your children are all valid ways to increase your amount of daily activity. Maybe even buy a pedometer and set daily step goals for yourself.

How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’?

I stay motivated with my training in two main ways. Firstly, I am always setting goals for myself. I make sure that I have both long term and short term goals. I always make sure that I am tracking my progress so that I know what to do or change in order to meet the goals I have set for myself. The other way I stay motivated is to constantly change up what I am doing when I train. This ensures that I don’t get bored with what I am doing.

Biggest fitness misconception?

The most common fitness misconception that I come across is women telling me that they don’t do weights exercise because they think that they will get “bulky”. Women do

Some health foods are killing us. Most people are familiar with macro nutrients; these are the broad groups called protein, fats and carbohydrates. None of these groups are bad.

You need all of them to live.

I read a study the other day that said much of people’s knowledge on fitness topics comes from media and advertising. Things like infomercials are guiding our decisions on eating and exercise! We are consuming more ‘low fat’ products than ever. So why are we still getting fatter? Low cholesterol is another line, some people now think this is a deadly poison.

Cholesterol is essential in our bodies and helps repair our cells.

Just think for a minute; you have a business trying to sell a new food in a supermarket. The shelves are bulging with them already so how do you get anybody to look at your product?

One angle is make it sound healthier than the competition.

It’s almost funny to see the ads for a processed, sugar filled, nutrient devoid bar saying they’re so much healthier than that other processed, sugar filled bar because it has ‘real strawberry’ powdered concentrate.

Much better to consume healthy, proper, unprocessed food.

This will get you the macro nutrients and just as importantly, the micro nutrients. These are all the vitamins and minerals that actually provide nutrition to your body. Without them the millions of processes your body constantly needs to perform can’t happen.

Imagine planting two similar trees; one in a pot full of sand that gets a drip of water now and then. It’s alive but only just.

The other is planted in dark, composted, nutrient-rich, well drained soil and given fresh water every day. How do you think they would compare in a year’s time? Which one do you feel more like most often?

And just taking a vitamin tablet isn’t enough. Take an apple, it has thousands of compounds, from quercetin, a powerful antioxidant that reduces cardiovascular risk, to flavonoids and phytochemicals that fight cancer. We’re not even sure what half these things do yet.

But our body has evolved eating them for thousands of years and it knows what to do with each.

Flus and colds in the winter season

Ear infections can be one of the most frustrating and painful conditions for our pets. Low grade ear infections can often go unnoticed. They cause pain and long term damage to the ear canal and can also effect hearing.

The correct term for ear infections is otitis externa and it occurs when bacteria or yeast infect the external ear canal.

Some breeds, particularly those with large or hairy ears like Cocker Spaniels, Poodles or Old English Sheepdogs are prone to ear infections, but they can occur in any breed. Dogs that love water and like to swim also seem to be an increased risk.

It is important that you are able to recognise the early symptoms of ear infections. An animal with an ear infection becomes very uncomfortable as the ears become swollen and sensitive. They usually shake their head and scratch at the ears in the aim to get the debris out. Ears often become inflamed and develop an offensive odour and a black or yellow tinged discharge commonly occurs.

So what causes ear infections? There are many different causes. Several types of bacteria and at least one type of yeast will cause an infection. Ear mites are also another common cause. Pets can also get foreign bodies in their ears such as grass seeds. Another common cause of ear infections are skin allergies. With skin allergies the ear becomes itchy and the pet causes secondary infection in the ear by constant scratching.

In order to treat ear infections we need to first examine the ear canal with an instrument called an otoscope. This has a special ear piece that goes into the ear with a light and a magnifying glass. When an ear is painful this can be uncomfortable so some pets require a gentle sedation to perform this.

Often samples need to be obtained form the ear canal to determine the type of infection present. The veterinarian can look at samples under the microscope or sometimes send the sample off to the pathologist to grow the particular bug.

Some pets may require a general anaesthetic to have the canal flushed out and a thorough examination performed. Most ear infections are treated with ear drops.

As the weather gets colder, there are more cases of cold and influenza, or ‘the flu’. With a little knowledge you can reduce your chances of getting sick.

Our bodies are constantly fighting off infections and viruses.

To help your chances of fighting these viruses, you must ensure your immune system is as strong as possible.

This means you need to be mindful of doing all the ‘good things’ for your health, such as eating well, exercise, drinking plenty of water and getting enough sleep. Being stressed and tired will compromise your immune system.

Although both are viruses, there are differences between a cold and the flu. With a cold, the symptoms are not as severe, and you generally won’t need to see a doctor. Colds normally involve a sore throat, runny nose and cough. Besides supporting your immune system, you cannot treat a cold and they should clear within 10 days.

Flu is more serious and normally starts with fever, sweats, aches and a feeling of severe tiredness. A high temperature is normally present as well, and if this is over 38.5 degrees or you experience chills, you generally will need to see a doctor to help relieve the symptoms.

I find that responding to the early signs of a cold, such as a sore throat, is vital to fighting off the virus. Medicated throat lozenges or a throat wash will help kill any virus that is starting to take over. Drinking lots of water is also vital to preventing and fighting off a cold or flu.

Cold and flu medication is also useful, but these do not treat your cold, only make you feel better whilst the infection takes it course.

The flu vaccine is still the best way to prevent getting the flu this winter, with evidence to suggest it gives about 80 to 90 per cent protection.

However, you cannot get the vaccination if you are already sick and you should get it before the flu season begins. This means if you haven’t been vaccinated and you want to, then you need to act quickly.

Jesus brings good news for us!

Not many of us would think of ourselves as truly poor or held as prisoners, or blind, or oppressed, subject to harsh treatment. Yet, this is Jesus’ challenging, provocative message for those of us who do not include God in our life.

At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry here on earth, the Bible’s book of Luke tells us that Jesus spoke to the crowds, declaring; “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.”

Jesus’ point is this; our lives are poor without God. We are oppressed, held prisoner by the pressures and realities of death, guilt and fear. And we are blind, not able to see the reality that knowing God brings to our lives.

As Luke’s account of Jesus’ life unfolds, we see how Jesus turns our condition around, as ultimately Jesus will give his life on a cross, and then three days later rise from death.

This powerful act brings forgiveness and new life with God. It gives hope to those who will trust in him, freeing us from the penalty of guilt and sin and even bigger, releasing us from the fear of death.

A moment’s honest reflection will cause you to see that in a day and age when good news is sometimes hard to find, here is something truly extraordinary.

This good news which Jesus brings is a foundation, a solid rock on which you can build your life and live happily!

Group member, Margaret said the organisation was originally created for “the love of quilting”.

Local quilting group gives people comfort when they’re most in need of help

Les Jarvis has been driving the disadvantaged in the community all over western Sydney for 20 years, clocking up 200,000 kilometres, a distance equivalent to six return trips from Sydney to London.

The 76-year-old first began to volunteer for Great Community Transport not long after his retirement, after realising that having finished painting the house and doing the gardens, he did not have a lot to do at home.

“I found myself sitting in front of the television and thought, what on Earth am I doing, watching television at 11 o’clock in the morning? It was something I never did,” he said.

“I got up with a niggling feeling in the back of my mind so I contacted Springwood Neighbourhood Centre to see if they needed a driver.”

As luck had it, they did, and he soon began driving voluntarily for the centre until in 1994, he stopped into a Great Community Transport office for a chat, and landed his current volunteer role.

“I pick people up and take them all over, at all hours of the day.

This morning I started at 6am but I have had times when I was up at 4am,” Mr Jarvis said.

Quilts are regularly received by the Palliative Care Units at Nepean, Springwood and Hawkesbury hospitals as a result of the work done by these dedicated ladies.

As well as the Palliative Care Unit they also regularly donate to Barnardos, Prince of Wales Children’s Hospital and the Penrith and Windsor Women’s Refuges.

“The quilts bring homemade comfort to people in times of need,” said Margaret.

The response that they receive reiterates to these women that what they are doing is appreciated and indeed a worthy cause, with people writing letters to thank them for making times of suffering more “relaxing” and creating “magical moments of hope for families.”

Caring Hearts have also greatly contributed to victims of natural disasters in not only New South Wales but also Victoria.

In 2009, the group sent 180 quilts to those who were struggling with the loss of their homes in the Black Saturday Bushfires.

During the Queensland floods they sent 30 quilts to those in need and similarly sent more quilts to those suffering from flooding in Yenda, NSW. More recently the organisation donated a large amount of time and effort to create over 250 quilts that were then delivered to those suffering from the October fires in the Blue Mountains.

“We can’t ignore the ones on our own doorstep,” said Margaret.

he frail aged and elderly in the community can look forward to a healthier, happier and more active life with the official opening of Nepean Valley RSL Day Club last week.

The opening, on Wednesday, March 19, was attended by a handful of local dignitaries, as well as the club’s current members and volunteers, who gathered together in celebration.

“It was a great day. We had an excellent turn out – it is great to see all those who support us attended,” said Nepean Valley RSL Day Club Coordinator, Jan Eaton.

Now officially opened, the club is looking forward to expanding its member numbers and inviting new volunteers to get involved.

“I have worked with youth for many years but there is a big difference when you work with the elderly. Once you are with them, they are just so grateful for everything you do. They are so appreciative, they show it with their smiles. It is a real warm and fuzzy feeling,” Ms Eaton said.

“All our volunteers say the same thing – they get as much out of it as they put in.”

“Without the generous support of Australians in every suburb and town across the country, The Salvation Army could not reach this goal.”

Each year the appeal’s doorknock aims to raise $10 million.

“The Salvation Army is in a unique position to assist individuals and families who fall on hard times,” Major Bruce Harmer said.

WITH 60 years of living in the Penrith area behind her, local senior Norma Tombs is well and truly part of the fabric of our community.

Norma, who has been living in Mountain View Retreat Retirement Village for almost two years, moved to the region when she was just 17-years-old and raised her family here.

She devoted herself to taking care of her four children, and also volunteered as a helping hand at her kids’ schools. Her family has continued to grow, with Norma now a proud grandmother of 10, and great-grandmother of 13 with a set of twins on the way to make 15.

Norma, who describes herself as a “busy lady”, regularly goes on day trips all around Sydney with her friends and also enjoys the bus trips that the retirement village organises.

It’s on again! Working Truck Show to attract huge crowd t is anticipated by local families annually, attended by enthusiasts from across the country and loved by all who take the time to check it out – the Penrith Working Truck Show is here again.

Back for its 27th year, the annual show is celebrating with another huge day of non-stop entertainment, rides and unique exhibits on Sunday, April 6, that combine to create the spectacular show, which is recognised as one of Penrith’s major events.

20,000 people flock to the Penrith Museum of Fire for the event each year, which is supported by the transport industry across Australia.

“This event is regarded as a ‘must see’ not only by local residents but by the entire national transport industry,” said Penrith Museum of Fire CEO, Mark White.

“We have exhibits on display from states across the country and crowds who travel from all over to experience the show each year.”

“There really is something to enjoy here for everyone and to make it better, the value for money at the Penrith Working Truck Show is unsurpassed by any other show,” Mr White said.

Tickets for adults are $30 and with each adult ticket purchase, three children can enter for free.

For this cost, all rides, entertainment, activities and exhibits inside the show are free.

Being a registered charity event, all funds from the Show will be used for the education of families in fire safety, for the preservation of fire history and to support local firefighters, who are helping to run the event.

“The firefighters you are supporting are the same guys who are ‘heroes’ in all our eyes, the ones who are out there battling the flames on the front line,” Mr White said.

After a successful 25 years of operating from its site in Coombes Drive, Penrith, owners Andrew and Ben Vicary made the crucial decision to move their entire business to a larger setting located in the Dunheved Business Park in St Marys.

Starting as a small family business, blending lubricants for the local western Sydney market, Gulf Western has developed into a multi-million litre organisation with an incredibly broad distributor network throughout all states and territories of Australia, along with New Zealand, Fiji, New Caledonia and the Pacific Rim. The Gulf Western brand has rapidly grown from its humble beginnings dating back to 1988, when its creator Peter Vicary first started to manufacture oil.

Light It Up Blue for autism awareness utism Awareness Australia is calling for nationwide support for ‘Light It Up Blue’, a campaign to mark World Autism Day. For World Autism Day, Wednesday, April 2, landmarks around the globe like the Empire State Building, Trafalgar Square, the Pyramids and Sydney Opera House will be lit up with the colour blue to raise awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

With ASD affecting one in every 100 Australians – it is the most common developmental disorder in Australia – there are few who have not been impacted by autism in a friend or family member.

“Our World Autism Awareness Day ‘Light It Up Blue’ campaign is about more than just the colour that has come to define it – it’s about recognising the very real and difficult challenges that face families affected by autism,” said Autism Awareness Australia CEO, Nicole Rogerson.

utism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) is calling on all Australians to wear blue on Autism Awareness Day on Wednesday, April 2.

The organisation, Australia’s largest not-for-profit provider of autism support services, hopes that by wearing the colour blue, which is the international colour for Autism, conversations can be started and awareness can be raised about the disorder.

“This time of year is really about getting awareness of autism, and the impacts that a diagnosis has on a person and their family, out in the community,” said Aspect’s Rebecca Keane.

“It is really important that as a community we are aware of what autism is, so that we can develop an understanding.”

Ms Keane is a Glenmore Park resident and psychologist, who works as an early intervention specialist for Aspect. She is also a group coordinator for Aspect’s Building Blocks program, which runs at Lapstone Preschool as part of the organisation’s early intervention services.

“Aspect runs a global campaign throughout April to encourage services and groups to run their own ‘go blue’ event,” she said.

“We (the local Building Blocks group) will hold a ‘go blue’ day. We will do blue
