It doesn’t get much better – a sunny day out on the balcony with family and friends, steaks on the barbie and a cold beer – an Aussie tradition! But is there an accident waiting to happen? In the last few years, balcony collapses have caused a number of injuries and deaths. Any balcony or deck has the potential to fail if not properly maintained, coastal areas being at an even higher risk due to the corrosive elements. No matter what material your balcony is made from, it is imperative to inspect it regularly for signs of decay, corrosion, termites and any other sign of instability. If a problem is found get onto it immediately! What can you do? A good place
to start is to check Council records to make sure the proper building permits and approvals were issued. Another good idea is to have it inspected regularly by a Structural Engineer or Qualified Builder. Be diligent and on the lookout for any sign of rot, rust, cracking
in timber or concrete, abnormal movement or any other indication of deterioration. Not only on the top side, get underneath and have a look if possible. Try and avoid wetting the deck too often, sweep instead of hose. Place plants and pots in trays to prevent water from pooling.
