ngry Penrith Councillors have moved to protect the heritage of Mulgoa Valley by banning cemeteries from being developed in the historic part of Penrith.

Rookwood General Cemeteries Reserve Trust entered into a due diligence process to purchase Fernhill Estate to “address the issues of burial shortages” in April, but the plan is now in tatters.

“To me, it would be sacrilege to put a cemetery in that location,” Councillor Greg Davies said at Monday night’s Ordinary Council meeting.

Councillor Ross Fowler said it wasn’t just about protecting the historical homestead.

“What is equally important is the landscape... it’s irreplaceable, you can’t replicate it,” he said.

Councillor Mark Davies targeted Rookwood, saying it “shows a degree of arrogance and lack of understanding” that they “think it is appropriate to have a cemetery there”.

Councillors also vowed to immediately write to NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Planning Minister Anthony Roberts indicating their “firm stance” in relation to the Rookwood plan for Fernhill and other potential cemeteries.

even of Penrith Council’s highest priority blackspots have been nominated for funding consideration under a national program aimed at stemming the incidence of road crashes.

A one kilometre blackspot on Forrester Road, St Marys, between Glossop and Christie Streets – which has seen 13 injury crashes in the last five years – makes the list, as does a 350 metre stretch along Borrowdale Way, Cranebrook, between Laycock Street and Callisto Drive, which was found to have five accidents in as many years.

Meanwhile, a median island with speed cushion treatments has been suggested for Pendock Road, Cranebrook, between Warndon Road and Offerton Way following four injury crashes, while a singlelane roundabout has been put forward to prevent further incidents at Andrews Road, Cranebrook, near Greygums Road, which saw its accident toll rise to three.

Alert Street, Werrington, near Gibson Ave; Ikin Road, South Penrith, near York Road; and Smeeton Road, Cranebrook, near Tadmore Road also made the cut with two injury crashes each.

Lotto winner tracked down A hardworking Penrith woman has been left shaking after this week discovering she became a Wednesday Lotto millionaire more than a fortnight ago.

The woman was one of two New South Wales division one winners, and one of four nationally, in Monday and Wednesday Lotto draw 3675 on Wednesday, July 5. Each received the guaranteed division one prize of $1 million.

While the woman’s entry was registered to her Players Card, NSW Lotteries had been unable to contact her on the details provided to convey the dream-come-true news.

When a NSW Lotteries official finally confirmed the million-dollar win to the woman on Monday afternoon, she erupted into immediate celebration.

“Really? You’re joking. Oh my god! You have just made my day!” she exclaimed.

“I can’t believe it! I just can’t believe it.

My hands are shaking!”

The woman explained that while she had marked her winning entry, she had simply used random numbers.

She promised to check all her Lotto entries immediately after each draw in the future.

With news of the win still sinking in, the woman confessed she had no idea what she would do with her windfall, but said it would help her enjoy a comfortable future.

“I honestly don’t know. I don’t know whether it’s sinking in yet. My hands are still shaking,” she said.

have a confession to make: I like Mondays.

I only have to take one look at Facebook and Instagram to know I’m somewhat of an exception; the complaints about Mondays start rolling in from late Sunday afternoon and the memes, quotes and images continue right through until 9am hits the next morning.

The reason I like Mondays is without doubt linked to the fact that I love my job.

That’s a somewhat fortunate position to be in because there’s an army of people out there who are dragging themselves out of bed through these cold winter mornings, dreading the work day ahead.

I get it, I really do.

That’s why I’m a little perplexed at the negative comments directed at Aussie tennis player Bernard Tomic, after his appearance on Channel Seven’s ‘Sunday Night’ on the weekend and yet another spat after tumbling out of Wimbledon.

Don’t get me wrong – like most of you I think Tomic is a spoiled brat who has no idea how lucky he is to travel the world playing sport, and getting paid a truckload for the privilege.

But much of the criticism of Tomic is thrown at him purely because he is brutally honest.

“I never loved tennis. I am just going to go about it as a job,” Tomic declared.

“Wouldn’t anyone want to take a job in a professional sport in one of the biggest sports in the world and only give 50, 60 per cent and earn millions of dollars? I think everybody would take that.”

You might want to punch Tomic in the nose after those comments but it’s hard to disagree with him.

because of the money? How many of us only give 50 or 60 per cent?

Sure, it might be a little bit more of a desperate scenario than Tomic faces given the income he earns, but is the principle still not the same?

Is complaining about going to work every Monday all that much different to Tomic saying he doesn’t love his job but is staying in it for the cash?

I actually thought Tomic’s interview on ‘Sunday Night’ was raw and honest.

It is something we don’t often see from our sportspeople and the criticism he’s copped is exactly why.

Tomic is unfortunately the text book product of parenting gone wrong – the enormous pressure placed on him from a young age clearly took the passion out of his tennis. Out of school at 16, Tomic has experienced very little of a ‘normal life’ and perhaps you can understand his at times petulant attitude.

Last Thursday night I had the great pleasure of being the MC for the Queen of Hearts Christmas in July fundraiser at the Penrith Paceway.

Chel Ellery and her team did a tremendous job pulling the event together and, with the help of Penrith’s generous business community, managed to raise $40,000 on the night, which will ensure critical counselling services for victims of domestic violence and child sexual abuse continues to be delivered in Penrith in a timely and efficient manner.

A special mention must go to the crew from the Great Walk Foundation, who donated $24,000 to the Queen of Hearts after completing their 10th trek earlier this year.

It was proof once again that the local community is willing to put its hand deep in its pocket to help others – and it’s something we should be immensely proud of.

The sad thing is that Tomic is without doubt heading towards joining the long list of sportspeople who crash and burn and live with lifelong regret. It is almost too late to reverse the trend – it’ll happen, and when it does it’ll be spectacular for all the wrong reasons.

But forcing Tomic to be passionate about something just because he’s earning big bucks is the product of some fantasy land expectation we have of our sportspeople.

When it comes down to it, minus the millions of dollars in his bank account, he’s no different to the 20-somethingyear-old putting up a meme on Sunday night complaining about going to work tomorrow.

Our biggest mystery still unsolved 45 years ago, Lynette Melbin visited Penrith Plaza to see her friends. She hasn’t been seen since.

fter 45 years of desperately searching, Penrith’s biggest mystery remains unsolved.

But ahead of Missing Persons Week next week, it is hoped that someone may still hold the key to finding out what happened to Lynette Ann Melbin.

On Monday, June 5 1972, 15-year-old Lynette was hanging out with friends around the Penrith Plaza area.

It was the last day she was ever seen alive, never to contact friends or family again.

Her mother, Pam Melbin, was set to pick her up after she finished work at 5.30pm, only to find Lynette wasn’t there.

With blonde hair and hazel eyes, Lynette was a twin, and to go missing was considered by her family to be completely uncharacteristic.

“She wouldn’t even go out in the dark to put a bin out, let alone just disappear,” Mrs Melbin said in a TV interview in 2006.

When her parents first reported her missing to police, the case was treated as a runaway.

Despite this break in the case, the past 11 years have been slow as the mystery remains unsolved and the NSW Police Missing Persons Unit confirm that Lynette is still considered missing.

National Missing Persons Week runs from July 30 to August 5 and this year, the focus on youth missing persons was selected after data found that three out of five reports recorded by police related to a young person under the age of 18, just like Lynette.

The disappearance has shocked the Penrith community to the core as we’re still left to question what really happened.

This year, Lynette would have celebrated her 60th birthday.

t’s every parent’s worst nightmare; take your eyes of your child for one second and they vanish.

That was almost the heartbreaking fate for one couple last week, when a man allegedly attempted to abduct their twoyear-old daughter in Penrith.

Police assert Anthony John McGauley, 41, entered a play area at Westfield Penrith at about 2.30pm on July 19 and tried to walk out with the toddler, but was stopped by the girl’s parents.

Following inquiries, the Sunshine Avenue, Penrith resident – who is unknown to the girl – was arrested that evening and charged with ‘take/detain child away with intent to remove from parental control’.

He was bail refused at Penrith Local Court the following day.

The accused sat quietly, his dark shoulder length hair worn down, and showed little emotion as Magistrate Susan McIntyre quashed his bid for freedom.

memory and there was some indication that the offence came “against the background of incidents of blackouts�.

However, police prosecutor Tin, who opposed bail, said there was “clear inconsistencyâ€? between CCTV footage capturing the event and what McGauley told police. “He’s likely to get a custodial sentence for these matters‌ essentially it’s a child abduction in my submission,â€? she said.

She also raised concerns about the accused’s illicit drug abuse.

Magistrate McIntyre said it was clear the nature of the allegation and the need to protect the community was “pressing�. “It’s very concerning to say the least,� she said.

She said his claim he mistook the girl for his own grandchild “was something that will obviously have to be tested against the evidence�, before refusing him bail.

His father, who he lives with, was in court in support of his son.

He is yet to enter a plea and is due to face Penrith Local Court again on Friday, September 22.

Trainer banned after attacking league star TROY DODDS

St Marys rugby league trainer has been issued a life ban after he attacked Panthers star Dallin Watene-Zelezniak during a junior rugby league match at St Clair last weekend.

Watene-Zelezniak was volunteering as a linesman in the under 12’s match when he made a decision that left the St Marys trainer unhappy. It’s alleged the man hurled abuse at the Penrith NRL star before wrestling and fighting him, forcing Watene-Zelezniak to defend himself.

A review conducted by Penrith District Junior Rugby League Manager Phil Cummings on Monday confirmed Watene-Zelezniak was not the instigator of the incident and cleared him of any wrongdoing.

Mr Cummings was able to view CCTV footage as part of his investigation, confirming Watene-Zelezniak had no case to answer.

St Marys Rugby League Club CEO Rod Desborough took decisive action on Monday, ending the offender’s association with the famous club.

“The trainer concerned has been stood down from duties effective immediately and been issued with a life suspension,

prohibiting him from being involved with St Marys Junior Rugby League Club in any official capacity,” Mr Desborough said.

“The trainer’s membership of the licensed premises has also been suspended, pending a further review by the Board of Directors.”

Mr Desborough said it was disappointing to see such an incident unfold at a junior match, especially given the club’s commitment to providing a safe atmosphere for players, parents and officials.

“We deem the actions of the Saints Team Trainer involved in the incident on Saturday to be unacceptable and totally contrary to the club’s beliefs, culture and the high standards of behaviour expected of our players, officials and supporters,” he said.

“We are extremely disappointed with the actions of the Team Trainer and wish to state the club has a zero [tolerance] policy for such behaviour.”

Watene-Zelezniak brushed off the incident and played for the Panthers against the Gold Coast Titans on the same afternoon, even scoring a try in his side’s victory.

The Panthers have alerted the NRL Integrity Unit as part of their handling of the situation but no further investigation is likely.

Shocking stats paint concerning picture EMILY NEWTON

he divide between the city and the west is growing, with worrying statistics revealing that Penrith residents are more likely to die prematurely than our Sydney City counterparts.

The data from the Social Health Atlas paints a sombre portrait of health in the Penrith LGA as we hold high rates of premature mortality in almost all categories where data has been collected.

With similar populations based on the 2016 census, Penrith and Sydney City local government areas vastly differ in deaths.

The total premature mortality figure across Penrith between 2010 and 2014 reached 842, while Sydney City sat on 610.

When broken down into cause, the premature mortality statistics reveal a sad truth about living in western Sydney.

Premature deaths from diabetes in Penrith reached 46, while Sydney sat on 28.

In a significant difference, Penrith premature deaths from lung cancer hit 167 and Sydney City was on the much lower 116.

Other cancers, including breast and colorectal, also have higher rates in Penrith.

“While our families work really hard to survive, we have a State Government that provides only $34 million out of a promised $550 million for health at Nepean Hospital.

“With the cost of living higher in western Sydney, and these pressures on our time, it is little wonder what we see in these statistics. It is not good enough.”

Other health issues that can be exasperated by lifestyle risk factors, such as circulatory diseases and respiratory system diseases, unsurprisingly held higher premature mortality rates in Penrith.

The Atlas collects public health statistics to monitor inequality in health and wellbeing, and support opportunities to improve population health outcomes.

Man fronts court after assaults on multiple women

A serial groper charged with indecently assaulting females at Penrith and St Marys will remain in custody after his matter was mentioned in court last week.

Investigations are continuing against the alleged sex offender, Tangi Temapu Karaka Williams, 22, with further charges of a similar nature expected to be laid in the coming weeks, police say.

The Werrington County resident, who did not apply for bail when he faced Penrith Local Court last Friday, is accused of reaching out and grabbing several strangers on the breast as he walked by.

The most recent offence took place about 12.30pm on July 19 outside a high school on High Street – the victim, a 26-year-old woman.

The accused is also alleged to have touched the breasts of two other females within minutes of one another at a Penrith mall on July 6.

Williams, who is unemployed and lives with his parents, was arrested last Thursday and charged with three counts of ‘assault with an act of indecency’.

Court documents show Williams made partial admissions to “accidentally” touching the women’s breasts in the shopping centre due to being intoxicated.

While after initially denying being on High Street, he claimed to have felt the 26-year-old’s breast because he had “seen a fly”.

It comes as Williams was set to be sentenced last Friday for an indecent assault on a 15-year-old girl on a westbound train at St Marys in October last year.

During the frightening afternoon incident, Williams is alleged to have kissed the teen multiple times, squeezed her breast and caressed her bottom before she exited the train and went immediately to police.

During his court appearance at Penrith Local Court last Friday, police “respectively requested” Williams be refused bail.

“It is clear the accused is continually committing similar types of offences that he is on bail for, on an ongoing basis,” court documents state.

He is due to reappear on August 11.

Anyone with information, or who may have encountered a similar incident, is encouraged to contact Penrith police.

Questions raised over security at Penrith Local Court

An agitated and angry prisoner who hurled profanities at the magistrate who refused her release has also sparked questions about the security at Penrith Local Court.

Cranebrook resident Samantha Dawn June Dickson moaned, cried and yelled out as she was escorted back to the cells following her unsuccessful bid for freedom.

The court heard Dickson, who is facing ‘drug possession’, ‘shoplifting’ and ‘fail to appear’ charges, had a “dismal” history of non attendance, and was brought before court again having been picked up on a warrant.

“Honestly, how can a court have confidence she’ll turn up to court?” the police prosecutor said in opposing bail, adding her illicit drug offence was still a “live issue”.

Magistrate Susan McIntyre said Dickson was certainly looking at a custodial sentence.

“It appears to me Ms Dickson has had multiple opportunities to address her offending and address her addiction,” she said before refusing bail.

Following the accused’s outburst, Magistrate McIntyre criticised the slow reaction of corrective services officers in taking her away.

She described them as far “too casual” and noted with disbelief that the door to the dock hadn’t even been locked.

Magistrate McIntyre said a frustrated prisoner who was bail refused was “a danger to everyone”, especially those seated in the body of the court, and

needed to be swiftly removed. “It’s unacceptable, they need to be told,” she said.

Dickson is due to reappear for sentence on August 10.

Magistrate angry at man who almost ran over police

A drunk motorist who police feared would run them over when he failed to enter a roadside RBT has been stripped of his licence for nine months.

Magistrate Susan McIntyre told Daniel Jason Pearman, who faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday on his second mid-range drink driving charge, he was fortunate not to be facing prison.

“Lucky for you you’re not going to jail today because it’s outside five years since your last offence,” she said.

She said while he appeared to be an otherwise valuable member of the community, his propensity to drink and drive was totally reprehensible.

“It is the most selfish of crimes... you put everyone else at risk... the results are often catastrophic,” she said.

The court heard Pearman had been forced to pay his boss $350 a week to drive him around, but Magistrate McIntyre had little sympathy for the offender.

“It’s supposed to hurt,” she said.

She said police had a difficult enough job as it was than to have to worry about a “person speeding along in a Landcruiser that doesn’t look like it’s going to stop”.

He was convicted, fined $750 and slapped with a $250 fine for failing to obey police direction.

Drug dealer off the streets after magistrate refuses bail

A suspected Penrith drug dealer charged with a number of serious offences, including ongoing supply, will remain off the streets for now after being bail refused.

Wade James Cornwell appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday dressed in a camouflage-coloured jumper, black tracksuit pants and sporting a shaved

moptop following his arrest. The court heard the Torton Place resident had “lapsed back into drug use” after stopping about a month ago and was dealing to supplement his habit.

However Magistrate Stephen Corry determined there was an unacceptable risk of failure to appear and commission of further serious offences given he could likely receive a custodial sentence if convicted.

He is due to face court again on September 8.

Teenager cops fine for driving without a licence

A Glenmore Park man has been hit with a fine for driving unlicenced.

Penrith Local Court heard Caleb Wiri, 18, had been granted a number of adjournments to obtain his learner’s permit but had failed to do so.

Magistrate Susan McIntyre warned that while a first ‘never licenced’ offence only carried a fine, if he was caught driving without a licence again he would be off the road for three years.

“You’re not entitled to drive until you’re licenced to do so,” she said.

He was convicted and fined $150.

Three months off the road for woman caught speeding

Allirra Rossi-Murray has been denied an appeal against her immediate driving suspension.

Rossi-Murray appeared before Penrith Local Court last Thursday in an attempt to claw back her licence.

The court heard the accused had been stripped of her licence on the spot after allegedly being nabbed more than 30km/h over the limit.

Magistrate Susan McIntyre said she “certainly wasn’t going to interfere” with the police-imposed suspension, noting her reasons for the appeal did not meet the “exceptional” standards required.

Her appeal was dismissed and threemonth suspension confirmed.

Cranebrook: Drugs seized after search of property

Charges are yet to be laid following a search of a property in Cranebrook last week.

Penrith Police with the North West Metropolitan Operations Support Group and Dog Squad attended a premises at Hefferman Road on July 19.

At the time there were five people at the premises.

Following investigations, police seized a number of prohibited drugs believed to be cannabis and ‘ice’ as well as a number of mobile phones and additional property.

It is anticipated that charges will be laid in the future.

Cranebrook: Trail bike arrest results in multiple charges

Officers arrested a trail bike rider on foot after he failed to start his engine, leaving him in the dust of another rider.

A police trail bike unit was patrolling Cranebrook as part of ongoing investigations on Monday, July 24 at 2.40pm.

During covert observations near Greygums Road and McHenry Road, police observed two trail bike riders.

It is alleged that the riders stopped in the park and then looked at police.

One of the males, a 21-year-old male with no fixed place of abode, tried to kick start his bike but was unable to do so.

The other rider took off as the 21-yearold dismounted his bike and began to run before jumping on to try a clutch start.

This was also unsuccessful.

Police then approached the male on foot, and intercepted him trying to run with the bike.

He was arrested and it was revealed he never held a licence and was unable to establish to police where the bike came from and was not wearing an approved helmet at the time of his arrest.

At Penrith Police Station he was charged with a number of traffic matters and ‘goods in custody’.

He was granted conditional bail and will appear in court on Tuesday, September 5.

Glenmore Park: Woman punched during robbery

A teenager has been charged following investigations into an alleged break-in at Glenmore Park on Tuesday, July 25.

About 9am, three males allegedly entered the backyard of a home on Knox Street and attempted to gain access to the house. A female resident confronted the males and was allegedly punched in the face several times.

One of the males allegedly produced a knife and threatened the woman before all three ran from the scene.

About 4pm on Tuesday, officers attended a home in Penrith and arrested a 15-year-old boy.

He was taken to Penrith Police Station in the company of a support person and charged with ‘aggravated break and enter with intent’, ‘use offensive weapon to avoid lawful apprehension’ and ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’.

The woman did not require hospitalisation and sought treatment at a medical centre.

Werrington: Wanted man found, hit with charges

A man, who escaped police custody at Miranda, was arrested at a house in Werrington on Friday, July 21.

It is alleged the man escaped police custody at Miranda on Sunday, July 16 and Strike Force Walpa, comprising officers from Miranda, Canobolas, Chifley and St Marys Local Area Commands, were conducting inquiries to locate the man.

The 31-year-old was arrested at a house in Albert Street, Werrington.

He was charged with multiple offences including ‘aggravated break, enter and steal’, ‘escape police custody’, ‘possess house breaking implements’, ‘assault police’, ‘resist arrest’, ‘custody of knife in public place’ and the revocation of parole warrant.

Is it in their best interest?

This week we had a client come into our office and ask us a very simple question; what happens if I lose my capacity and my family do not think that my attorney or guardian are doing the right thing by me even though I appointed them when I was of sound mind?

We figure that a lot of our clients probably have this question.

If a person has been appointed as an attorney or guardian of a principal who subsequently loses their capacity, and they are doing things that are not in the best interest of the principal, or breaching the document in some way, there are two main avenues for a concerned party to challenging the appointment of the attorney or guardian or have it reviewed.

The first avenue of redress is to make an application to the NSW Civil & Administration Tribunal (NCAT).

NCAT has the power to review powers of attorney and make orders in relation to a person’s guardianship in a number of circumstances.

This includes if there is some suggestion that the person making the power of attorney or guardianship did not have mental capacity to do so at the time that it was executed, or if there are no capacity issues but the person being appointed as the guardian or attorney is not acting in the best interests of the principal.

The reason that this comes up so often is that attorneys are not supervised, and they are not required to report to any authority.

An attorney can be compelled to provide accounts of how they are spending a person’s money or disposing of their

assets, however practically they essentially have free reign, particularly if a person has lost their capacity to manage their affairs.

Similarly, in the context of enduring guardianship, the person appointed by the principal who has lost their capacity essentially stands in their shoes and makes decisions for them about their health and lifestyle, even if these decisions are at odds with what the person would have decided themselves if they had the capacity to do so.

A concerned person can make an application to NCAT to revoke, suspend, confirm or vary the appointment of an enduring guardian, and NCAT will need to be satisfied that such action is in the best interests of the principal.

The second avenue for redress if you have concerns about the actions of an enduring guardian or an attorney is to make an application in the Supreme Court of NSW for review of the appointment.

Applications to the Supreme Court of NSW are arguably a much more complex and expensive process than an application to NCAT. Airport forum not on agenda Penrith Mayor John Thain threatened to clear the Council chambers on Monday night after anti-airport hecklers continued to shout abuse during proceedings.

Protesters opposed to the Western Sydney Airport descended on Council’s chambers to see whether their calls for a public forum would finally be realised.

But in what is being labelled a “cop out”, they were left disappointed again after Councillors resolved to ask the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development (DIRD) to hold an information session instead.

Labor Councillor Ben Price disagreed with the majority stance, saying a forum was “overdue” and it was time for Council to face its constituents.

“We owe it to the people of Penrith to be totally transparent,” he said.

Cr Marcus Cornish agreed.

“We’re supposed to be here to represent the people, not to avoid them,” he said.

However, Councillor Greg Davies said no amount of “jumping up and down” would stop the airport being built, adding it would be a “no airport forum” and achieve “absolutely nothing” because the information will be “drowned out”.

“I’m not 100 per cent behind it but the decision has been made,” he said.

But action groups on the ground claim Penrith residents are poorly informed.

“It’s got to cover the negatives and the positives,” President of No Badgerys Creek Airport Inc Andrea Grieve stressed.

Emma walks tall despite challenges Cranebrook resident to battle Great Wall of China in bid to find cancer cure EMILY NEWTON

hen cancer survivor Emma Dunlop set her sights on walking the Great Wall of China, it was something she desperately wanted to do. Now that the cancer has returned, it’s something she needs to do.

When the Weekender last spoke to Cranebrook’s Ms Dunlop, she was on cloud nine as a scan in December revealed she was cancer-free after being first diagnosed with melanoma in 2014 that had spread to her lungs.

“The scan after the Melanoma March showed that it was in both my lungs again,” Ms Dunlop said.

She refuses to let the return of her cancer hold her back, having started immunotherapy treatment while training to take on the Great Wall of China.

“Because of treatment, I haven’t been able to get back into the gym, but I’m slowly getting back into it,” she said.

“My body doesn’t cope like other people. My immune system is obviously busy at the moment, so it’s going to take me twice as long to recover.”

The 11 day walk in September might be her toughest challenge yet as she fights Stage 4 cancer each step of the way, determined to find a cure.

Council tackles climate change Penrith City Council has joined forces with more than 30 councils across Australia under a new initiative to slash emissions and tackle climate change.

The Climate Council’s Cities Power Partnership program aims to transform Australia’s energy future, with hundreds of towns and cities, through councils, becoming local leaders and champions.

Penrith Mayor John Thain said the landmark initiative is giving Australian councils actionable, realistic, and effective methods to encourage clean energy technology, energy efficiency, sustainable transport and other climate solutions, all at a local level.

“Local government has a strong history of working together on energy and climate-related projects, and this partnership gives us an opportunity to continue and strengthen that work by sharing knowledge, experience and resources, to achieve positive outcomes for all,” he said.

“Penrith Council has a solid track record in this area but we are always open to new ideas on how to address the issues we face in Penrith.”

Council is also actively looking to encourage the sustainable design and development of buildings across the city and has been pleased to recently support approval of a development on John Tipping Grove which will feature ‘green roofs’ for the purpose of reducing heat.

“The cumulative effect of environmentally conscious design can be transformative,” Cr Thain said.

The gallery will be getting a new air conditioning system and geothermal heat pumps thanks to $380,000 of government funding.

Western Sydney Senator Marise Payne confirmed and welcomed the funding on Monday alongside a grateful Penrith Mayor, John Thain.

“The funding is enabling the purchase of vitally important technology which will allow new and unique artwork sensitive to weather to be shown in the region,” she said.

“The project will facilitate the replacement and installation of air conditioning at Lewers House, Anchor House, Main Gallery, Office, Picture Storeroom and Workshops 1 and 2.

“This includes the installation of geothermal heatpumps and supply and installation of a critical room air conditioning unit.”

“Stability, temperature and humidity is everything in terms of best practice and preservation.”

With millions of dollars worth of art held at the gallery, Chairman of Penrith

Performing and Visual Arts, Peter Anderson said the funding was “huge” news for the region.

“Because of it, we will be able to borrow other major artworks from significant galleries who will not lend them unless you have proper climate control,” he said.

“This has been something we’ve needed and wanted for a very long, long time.”

Cemetery plan dead and buried Rookwood’s plan for Fernhill now in tatters after Council maintains stance to protect history ALENA HIGGINS

ack off. That’s the message Penrith Councillors want conveyed to Rookwood and any other developer thinking of building a cemetery in the “sacred” Mulgoa Valley.

Councillors made it clear in no uncertain terms on Monday night that burial sites were not welcome, before moving to block a potential development at the iconic Fernhill Estate.

During the Ordinary Meeting, Councillors voted unanimously to prohibit the establishment of cemeteries in the Mulgoa Valley, effectively putting Rookwood General Cemeteries Reserve Trust’s (RGCRT) plans to purchase the site in limbo. Councillors didn’t hold back with their criticism, saying it would “scar” the pristine and historically rich landscape if a burial site went ahead.

“To me, it would be sacrilege to put a cemetery in that location,” Councillor Greg Davies said.

Councillor Mark Davies targeted Rookwood, saying it “shows a degree of arrogance and lack of understanding” that they “think it is appropriate to have a cemetery there”.

“Tell them to back off... in my perspective they’re not welcome,” he declared.

“It’s important that we change the Local Environment Plan (LEP) to protect Wallacia and the Mulgoa Valley.”

Practical flaws were also raised, with Deputy Mayor Tricia Hitchen predicting “major traffic delays” along Mulgoa Road with the addition of “10 to 15 funerals per day”, adding ground water close to the surface also made the site unsuitable.

In April, RGCRT entered into a due diligence process to purchase Fernhill Estate to “address the issues of burial shortages”.

Under the plan, 40 per cent of the 383.52-hectare site would be used for cemetery purposes, with the remainder being maintained as heritage parkland.

Councillor Ross Fowler said it wasn’t just about protecting the historical homestead.

“What is equally important is the landscape... it’s irreplaceable, you can’t replicate it,” he said.

“We have a lot of urban sprawl in Sydney, very few, if any [areas] remain untouched and as close to what it was like when European settlement occurred.”

Councillors also vowed to immediately write to NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Planning Minister Anthony Roberts indicating their “firm stance”.

School’s exciting new music facility hits all the right notes

Toilet upgrade proves a costly exercise for Penrith City Council ALENA HIGGINS

ost people would agree half-amillion dollars is a lot of money.

It can buy you a three-bedroom townhouse in St Marys, an entire private “party island” off Queensland’s central coast, or in the case of Penrith City Council, two new toilet blocks.

On Monday night, Councillors awarded a tender for the construction of “toilet amenities and associated works” at Dukes Oval, Emu Plains, and Smith Park, Castlereagh, totalling a whopping $450,900 excluding GST. When the Weekender asked Council what the works would entail, a spokesperson said the upgrade included the “demolition of old and construction of new toilet amenities” while the “associated works are footpaths”.

It’s not the only local government tender process that has left residents scratching their heads and wondering if their money is being flushed down the drain.

Recently, a majority of Councillors agreed to spend $3 million upgrading High Street’s Triangle Park, including paving, tree planting, adding a water feature, deck and shade structures.

The spend has been widely criticised by the public.

Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Marise Payne, officially opened the facility in Werrington this week on behalf of the Minister for Education and Training, Simon Birmingham.

Addressing the staff and students, Ms Payne was honoured to be at the school as both a Federal Government representative and a proud local as she explained the

“warmth and strength and passion” she found in music.

“One of the great passions of my life has been in the celebration of music and arts and culture,” Ms Payne said.

“What government tries to do by supporting a development like this, is to give you an opportunity to make the most of those talents in whatever way you choose.”

The music centre cost a total of $728,562 and includes two music rooms, a computer music room, two practice rooms and two storage areas.

Acting Headmaster Andreas Engesser thanked Ms Payne for attending.

Penrith’s Westco Building Consultants beat a field of 13 tenderers to secure the contract, coming in about $7,000 above the cheapest quote.

They were selected based on their compliance with the tender evaluation process, demonstrated ability to meet Council’s requirements and competitive price for the services offered.

“Biggest ever” individual donation Not a Dry eye in the house: $40,000 donation will make a huge difference to cancer patients EMILY NEWTON

trip to the hospital on Australia Day weekend last year changed Mary and Michael Hartnett’s world after discovering Mr Hartnett had two brain tumors.

While Mr Hartnett sadly lost his battle 15 months later, his legacy lives on through a $40,000 donation to Nepean Cancer Care Centre for Dry July following the exceptional treatment and support they received.

“It was so professional, we were just in shock, trauma and totally out of our depths because we had never experienced anything like this in our lives,” Ms Hartnett said.

“We were very happy, we were very comfortable and we knew that we were getting the treatment that he needed.”

Dawn Hutley, Senior Occupational Therapist and Dry July participant, said that the donation will fund six palliative hospital beds and mattresses to allow loved ones to spend their final days at home.

“The disease changes so quickly, it’s not like it will smoulder on for about a year or so, it’s a constant change,” she said.

Both from Ireland with a marriage that lasted 42 years, Ms Hartnett considers herself “lucky” to have spent quality and peaceful time together at the end of her husband’s journey.

“People don’t need to be in hospital at the end, you need to be at home with your family, surrounded by your loved ones and friends,” she said.

Celebrating their 10th year, Dry July raises over $4 million for cancer services annually, but this is the biggest individual donation in the fundraiser’s history.

“This has never happened before,” Ms Hutley said.

“Cancer Care are just eternally grateful to the extremely kind donation that both Mary and Michael have put forward to the service.”

Dry July CEO Brett Macdonald attended Nepean Hospital last Thursday to personally thank Ms Hartnett for her generous donation.

“Ever since the beginning it was all about supporting cancer services for us and the patient centre needs, and we haven’t deviated from that,” he said.

“It’s great to see where the funds are going and meet the people that this impacts knowing the difference that we’re making.”

We have a governing Federal Liberal Party at the moment with the only supporters of the Prime Minister it seems, inside the caucus room. There’s only one way to change this and that is at branch candidate pre-selection voting, not at polling booths as the hierarchy will always force upon the members their preferred candidates and not branch faithful. In 20 or 30 years, most likely when house prices have reached astronomical levels, you will regret not having grabbed your slice of the pie. Renting may seem like a much more sensible financial option when you’re in your 20s and wanting to spend money on all sorts of things, but the asset creation property brings is vitally important to your lot in life.

Once you find out whom these people are, monitor their accounts, what they are posting and if they are promoting any other brands.

When you’re ready to make contact, most influencers who are open to new opportunities will list a contact email in their profile, so email them and ask if they are interested in collaborating.

Send them a detailed email about your business, what you can offer them in exchange and how they can reach you if they are interested.

Alternatively, get yourself noticed by them. Start tagging them in your posts and repost their content to your audience, it’s easy content for your accounts.

They might even share your content to their audience in return, without any collaborative agreement.

While he’s playing on and still doing well after recovering from a serious ACL injury, there’s little doubt that the powerhouse winger will be much better next year with a full pre-season under his belt.

» Meanwhile, Mansour has admitted that

a number of players got a little too excited about the side’s premiership prospects this year and got caught up in the hype of the favouritism tag. He made the admission during a one-on-one interview with Peter Sterling on Fox League on Tuesday.

» Could Tim Grant possibly play out the

twilight years of his career where it all began at the Panthers? The 29-year-old is off contract at the Wests Tigers and is unlikely to be retained by Ivan Cleary.

There’s a few whispers doing the rounds suggesting that Grant wants to return to the foot of the Mountains and could be willing to ply his trade in reserve grade.

» The brand new rugby league video

game has been released this week on PS4 and Xbox. While ‘Rugby League Live 4’ will never be at the standard of an EA Sports-produced game, it looks like the creators behind this new release have done pretty well to deliver one of the better league games available. However, look out for a few bizarre Penrith-related issues. I’m told Mitch Rein is nowhere to be found in Penrith’s NRL team but is hiding away in the ISP NSW squad, while Peter Wallace looks more like Ed Sheeran than Wallace himself. Peta Hiku is also still floating around as a Panther, but that is sure to be patched pretty quickly.

Game creators also had to tackle the issue of player tattoos, opting to go with one standard set of ink for every player.

» Cryotherapy is the latest trend when it comes to match recovery and plenty of Panthers players are using the machines off-site. In fact, it’s almost replaced the traditional pool session as part of the

team’s recovery. I’m told Phil Gould is weighing up the prospect of getting out the cheque book and purchasing a machine for the Rugby League Academy ahead of next season. For those not in the know, Cryotherapy is a pain treatment that uses a method of localised freezing temperatures to deaden an irritated nerve or alleviate muscle soreness.

» Gould may also be weighing up the

prospect of employing a full-time babysitter at Panthers HQ. There’s clearly something in the water at the Panthers with the partners of Peter Wallace, Josh Mansour, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and James Fisher-Harris all expecting little ones in the months ahead. Sam McKendry, Tyrone Peachey and Moses Leota all recently welcomed new additions to their families.

» Sitaleki Akauola remains off-contract

I

t’s so close, yet so far away.

Eighth place on the competition ladder is more within reach than ever, yet it could slip through Penrith’s fingers at any moment.

And as St George-Illawarra’s shock 52-22 win over Manly last Sunday proved, the Panthers don’t necessarily control their own destiny – other sides will have a say in their fate.

However, with six games remaining it’s fair enough to say that if Penrith keep winning, they’ll play Finals footy in September.

The next fortnight offers an enormous opportunity for the Panthers with clashes against the struggling Bulldogs and Tigers

at Pepper Stadium a chance for Penrith to really solidify their post-season chances.

It won’t be easy, however, especially with captain Matt Moylan missing from the Bulldogs clash due to a worrying hamstring injury that also kept him out of the game against the Warriors a fortnight ago. Tyrone May again comes in to the side to play five-eighth.

It wasn’t so long ago that the Panthers put the cleaners through the Bulldogs 30-0 at ANZ Stadium, but I get the feeling it won’t be so easy this time around.

Canterbury are a club that often responds to and thrives under pressure and with coach Des Hasler’s future in the spotlight this week, the side’s Finals hopes officially gone and Josh Reynolds under investigation for an incident at a Cronulla nightclub, there’s plenty of pressure to go around at Belmore right now.

The Bulldogs will have something to

prove in the latter stages of the competition and the Panthers aren’t necessarily playing first class footy, so there’s every chance of an upset in this clash.

The Dogs are also boosted by the return of skipper James Graham from injury.

Last Saturday’s game against the Titans was scrappy at best, but Penrith did enough to win and pounced on opportunities presented by their opposition, particularly in the second half.

What the Panthers probably lack at the moment is some spark when the game starts to get a little dour late in the first half or mid-way through the second, and the likely return of Bryce Cartwright will help with that issue. He came back via reserve grade last weekend and all reports suggested he created plenty of chaos in the 50 minutes he was out there.

Reagan Campbell-Gillard on the bench for the opening exchanges and then letting him loose for the final 60 minutes – it’s working well and as long as the Panthers survive the early stages of games, they’re able to bring on the likes of RCG and Leilani Latu and really own the back portion of the first half.

It’s widely known that the Bulldogs struggle to score points, and they’re not suddenly going to turn things around this week, which means the Panthers need to play simple, tough and grinding football.

If Penrith are patient, the points will come and the Bulldogs will ultimately be frustrated out of the contest.

I think this match offers the Panthers a real chance to show the rest of the competition what they’ve got – and with a four point gap now on their nearest rivals, it’s not a match they can afford to lose.

Barrett deserves praise for Manly’s surprising season

ith six rounds of the NRL competition to go, there’s nine teams battling it out for the final top eight positions.

For this week’s column I’m going to list my surprise packets for season 2017 as well as my biggest disappointments.

My top surprise packet for this season is the Manly Sea Eagles.

After a slow start to the year and almost $1 million under the cap, what coach Trent Barrett’s done with that roster is unbelievable. He resurrected a number of players’ careers including Akuila Uate and Curtis Sironen, while Blake Green is performing at such a high level.

I love watching Tom and his brother Jake Trbojevic play, and even down 30-0 last week against the Dragons, you knew the Sea Eagles would come back and make a game of it.

My second top surprise packet for 2017 is the Parramatta Eels.

Parramatta have been one of my favourite teams to watch this year, they are a real bunch of footballers. While they haven’t

got as many athletes as some of the other teams in the competition, what they have got is some smart players in their team.

While the combination between Mitchell Moses and Corey Norman is growing each week, they will miss the energy and skill of Clint Gutherson, who was fast becoming one of my favourite players to watch.

My biggest disappointment of the season has to be the Canberra Raiders.

Canberra have got the most talented mix of youth and experience in the competition but haven’t had any consistency with it in 2017.

This could have easily been the Raiders’ season had they won some of those tight games but now they’re going to have to sit down in the off-season and really analyse how to manage a game when it gets close.

It’s been a tough year if you’re a Raiders fan but sometimes you’ve got to be harsh to actually look at the big picture.

I couldn’t split my next two disappointments in the New Zealand Warriors and Canterbury Bulldogs.

Both these sides have big talented packs and huge names on their roster but they haven’t been able to put it together on the field. I like to think if you swapped

the Warriors’ mentality with the Titans’ mentality; you’d probably have a top eight team.

It’s hard to believe that the Warriors boast the New Zealand international spine, yet no one is able to unlock their capabilities on a consistent basis, and the same goes for the Bulldogs.

Canterbury have had so much drama surrounding Des Hasler this season that it’s finally taking its toll. The Bulldogs just

haven’t developed their game or changed their attack and that’s why they are in the situation they are today.

It’ll be interesting to see how the next six weeks plays out and whether the Penrith Panthers (currently ninth) can sneak their way in.

While Penrith need some results to go their way as well as win themselves, they are more than capable of getting in and upsetting some teams in the Finals.

This week’s student of the week is Bailey Crawford. Bailey goes to Penrith South Public School and has just completed his first week at Panthers on the Prowl. In his first week he has already had the opportunity to tour the Panthers Training Academy where he met Nathan Cleary and saw the NRL Squad going through their paces. Bailey was also on field pre-game at Pepper Stadium for the Titans match getting an up-close game-day experience. In just one week Bailey has shown himself to be an attentive and enthusiastic participant in our lessons. We look forward to watching his progress this term.

Waqa Blake breaks free

he photograph accompanying this story says it all – Waqa Blake is oozing confidence right now and nobody is going to get in his way.

The exciting Panthers centre produced one his best attacking performances of the season last weekend, scoring a double and running an impressive 199 metres against the Titans.

While his NRL career got off to a shaky start a number of years ago, there’s no denying that the rangy Fijian is now well and truly a force to be reckoned with.

The 22-year-old credited his teammates for making him the player he is today.

“I think it just comes off the back of the group of boys that I play with,” Blake admitted.

“My teammates really help with my confidence and, after a slow start to my career, I now know what to do out there.”

And those “group of boys” know Blake and his game very well, having risen through the Panthers system together as teenagers.

In 2013, Blake won the Under 20’s Holden Cup Grand Final alongside many of his current NRL teammates including Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Bryce Cartwright, Reagan Campbell-Gillard and Isaah Yeo. A second group of Holden Cup graduates from Penrith’s premiership-winning 2015 side are also making a name for themselves in first grade including Nathan Cleary, Dylan Edwards, Tyrone May, Moses Leota, James Fisher-Harris and Corey Harawria-Naera.

There’s no denying that Penrith has become an incredible breeding ground for exceptional talent, which will only be beneficial to the club now and in the future.

“When you grow up and play with each other, you know what style they play and you can feed off their confidence and help each other out,” Blake said.

“Just the other day when Tyrone May made his debut, we were talking about how awesome it is that we are all playing together now.”

eagan Campbell-Gillard has arguably been Penrith’s best forward all year, and now teammate and fellow big man James Tamou believes the 24-year-old has the attitude and natural ability to take his career to the next level.

During the pre-season, the former Cowboy and Premiership winner singled out Campbell-Gillard as the player he couldn’t wait to play with and the one who he predicted would make a giant leap in 2017.

20 rounds in the can and the humble kid from Mount Druitt hasn’t let anyone down.

Speaking with Extra Time, Tamou strongly believes that if Campbell-Gillard can continue his good form into next year, he will play Origin footy in 2018.

“While Reagan Campbell-Gillard has been relegated to the bench in recent weeks, that in no means is a demotion,” he said.

“If he keeps playing like he is, he’ll be playing Origin next year.”

Since coming off the bench against the Titans and Warriors over the past fortnight, Campbell-Gillard has put in two of his best performances of the season, averaging 180 metres and 28 tackles.

Despite some initial head scratching from experts and fans, Campbell-Gillard’s move has proven to be a tactical masterstroke from coach Anthony Griffin.

Tamou said Campbell-Gillard likes to play with a chip on his shoulder.

“Reg really takes it personal in games,” he said.

“He’s a raw player that really just takes it to them and he can create something out of nothing.

“He’s just one of those players that really takes it personal and really does good things for the team.”

While Campbell-Gillard is firing at the right time of the season, so are Penrith who – on the back of three straight wins – sit just two points outside the coveted top eight. Despite winning ugly against the Gold Coast Titans last Saturday afternoon, Tamou said the side is finally clicking and doing enough to grind out victories.

We’re expecting plenty from a bunch of kids...

are still growing up. In very few other workplaces do we expect so much from someone so young.

The pressure on elite, maturing athletes is extreme.

For the best part I think the young men in our game handle it well.

Sure, from our seat we’d consider a professional footballer the dream job, but when these young men go to work there’s literally hundreds of thousands of people watching, analysing and commenting on their every action. Is this level of judgement across all workplaces? The simple answer is ‘no’.

Watching this group (and their mates) mature in their workplace is going to be something special over the coming years.

However, while these kids are Penrith’s future, they are also Penrith’s now ... and over the next six weeks we’re expecting a lot of them, largely because the season didn’t start to script.

So the race to September football has come early and these are the youngsters that will largely determine if the Panthers do or don’t play Finals. A tonne of pressure at such a young age.

Enjoy the run to the post-season.

o.... what do you want to be when you grow up?

I turned 26* in May and to be honest I’ve still got no idea. That’s OK though. These decisions can’t be made in a split second, they take time and I’m certainly taking mine but that’s exactly what rugby league fans won’t accept on a football field. We expect young men to make thousands of spilt second decisions every week, and always the right one. We expect a lot, probably too much. They’re only kids! Well, the Cubs of Penrith are anyway.

t’s hard to believe that it’s been 40 years since the mighty Penrith Panthers won their first ever major lower grades title.

The year was 1977, and the Panthers were massive underdogs up against a star-studded Parramatta Eels line-up in the Jersey Flegg Cup Grand Final.

Despite Parramatta boasting the likes of Eric Grothe Sr., Brett Kenny and Steve Ella, Penrith’s team of unknowns shocked the rugby league world that afternoon by prevailing 15-3 winners.

Phil Baker, who these days is a teacher at Blaxland High School, remembers that 1977 season and subsequent Grand Final like it was yesterday.

“I remember Parramatta beating us

These are just a handful of the hilariously bizarre tales ABC radio host James Valentine has come across over 20 years hosting his radio show ‘Afternoons’.

This August he’ll be bringing these stories and more to the Blue Mountains Theatre stage in his hugely successful

live show ‘Afternoons Tonight!’. With many creative hats already on his head – including journalist, author, presenter, TV host and musician – James admits the live shows are a chance to embrace a new role, which he describes as a ‘stand up humourist’.

“A stand up comedian to me is about gags, whereas a humourist tends to be more observational and as interested in audience contribution as they are their own,” James explained.

After many years on radio it’s the weird and wonderful tales from listeners that provide James with the most amusing subject matter.

“What I love in my radio show is talk-

back where people are calling in telling me stories and telling me things about their lives and making their own observations,” he said.

“I think of that as kind of like ‘found humour’, it’s humour where someone is telling you a story about their cat, and it’s incredibly funny but it’s a real story.”

With the live show, which enjoyed a sell out season in 2016, James brings that talkback mentality to a room of real people, with hilariously awkward consequences.

“There’s a segment called ‘This is what I live with’ where we talk about what your partner does that annoys you,” he said.

“If you can get somebody in the room to talk about the thing their partner does

that annoys them, while the partner’s sitting next to them, it’s gold,” he laughs.

While sharing those weird and wonderful stories provides plenty of laughs, James also appreciates the way opening up can help to create bonds between audience members.

“If it happened to you it’s worth talking about because it’s probably happened to somebody else,” James said.

“It’s a nice way of realising we’re all the same.”

‘Afternoons Tonight! with James Valentine’ will be on at the Blue Mountains Theatre in Springwood on Saturday, August 19 at 8pm. Tickets are $27-$30. To purchase tickets, call 4723 5050.

his August classical music station Fine Music 102.5FM will be leaving the studio and bringing their broadcast out west for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Live From The Joanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

The station will be hosting its biggest live broadcast event ever at The Joan in this Sunday afternoon performance, which will feature a range of emerging talent along with professional virtuosi.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s line-up will feature the piano playing of rising star Diana Babajanyan and the smooth jazz of Fine Musicâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kruger Scholar and Frances Madden.

They will be joined by the saxophone and classical guitar of Duo Histoire, along with beautiful melodies from

Consider your long term goals before you start investing Is the best investment today still right for tomorrow?

When making an investment decision, I believe the most crucial consideration is; what am I trying to achieve with this investment – what is the end goal?

As I say regularly, the aim of the game isn’t to make as much money as possible, it is to make sure we achieve our goals.

It is also important to look at how our lives are likely to change over the length of the investment and determine if this might affect the appropriateness of the investment choice.

The length of time of an investment greatly affects the exposure to growth; short-term investments should have a low exposure to growth. The logic being, if an investment with a short-term investment horizon experiences a bad year (which is inevitable), it won’t have the chance to recover with subsequent, above average years.

Therefore, it stands to reason, if you are saving for something that is in the short to medium term, for example a holiday or the children’s education, you would look for an investment that is defensive in nature.

A cash based investment might be appropriate if you are looking at a 12 month time frame, where a defensive

managed fund might be the way to go if it is a three to five year time horizon.

In Australia, we love property, and investment properties are a wonderful way to build wealth for the long-term.

They provide capital growth, we are able to gear our investments with low interest rates and most people are comfortable with an investment property.

Properties are very suitable for people with long investment horizons, who are looking to build wealth for goals at least 10 years into the future.

Properties also have what we call stepped growth.

This refers to the fact that the market often sits still or as low growth for a number of years, then dramatically surging before flattening with the process repeating.

If you hold a property for a number of years you will benefit from a number of these surges. A short-term holding may encompass a period of only low or no growth. High entry and exit costs of property also lends itself to long-term investments.

Before we enter a long-term investment, especially one that requires an ongoing commitment, we should look at our own situation.

Will my income or expenses change greatly? If so, will I still be able to commit to this investment? Starting a family for instance, can throw a spanner in the works of an investment strategy.

As we get to retirement, we should move towards high income bearing investments that are liquid.

Our investments are now our income source, so we should structure them to best achieve this goal.

Different investments have different strengths and weaknesses.

Matching our investments to what we are trying to accomplish will best achieve our goals – this is the aim of the game.

For years, I have heard women express their internal anguish with the inability to drop their weight, at the same rate as their male partner.

This disappointment is often followed with the internalising questioning; “Am I not training as hard?”, “should I eat less?”, “Should I just give up?”. The result often ends in either defeat or pushing the body beyond its limits.

Fat loss is not an impossible task but it can be a difficult journey for some women, if not supported properly.

And the reason for this is physiology.

There are a number of fad diets out there that seem to work well for some but this isn’t the case for everyone, especially women, who often experience a vicious cycle of weight gain vs weight loss.

Progesterone and estrogen are two hormones that assist in balancing wellness, fat storage and muscle development.

Calculators have replaced mental calculation, but it’s not too late to get your kids thinking...

Last week we discussed the effect that calculators had placed on the learning of mathematics in schools today.

We also suggested that learning table skills would improve the standard of mathematics overall.

At the end of the column, I suggested a technique that we use at Master Coaching to pique student interest and to show them the ease at which calculative skills can be attained.

The problem was the ability to mentally multiply two numbers in the 90’s, such as 94 x 97 = 9118.

The method is simple and can be successfully shown to any student above Year 4.

All that is required is to apply some algebraic skills to arithmetic.

Consider the identity: (a-x) (a-y) = a2 – (x+y) a + xy: Using this identity even the modest student can be shown how to solve the above problem.

In this example, x=3, y=6 and a=100.

The first two digits are given by 100− (x+y) = 91; the last two digits are just the product x×y = 18, giving the result as above 97 x 94 = 9118. This technique can

also apply to numbers in the 80’s but the mental calculations become more onerous. Try a few and check your results.

Mental calculation is a lost art, but over the preceding centuries prior to calculators it was a vital part of mathematics.

Over the next two weeks I will look at some other interesting facts that may stimulate the genius within you or your child.

Does your pet have bad breath? A staggering 70 per cent of pets suffer from some form of dental disease.

It is one of the most common diseases that we see in animals. Any dog or cat can be affected but dental disease is more common in smaller breed dogs with small faces such as Cavaliers, Poodles and Shi Tzus.

When food particles and bacteria are allowed to accumulate in the mouth, it can form plaque. When plaque combines with saliva, it forms a hard substance called calculus. This causes gum irritation and inflammation which is known as gingivitis.

After a period of time, the calculus builds up under the gum line and separates it from the teeth – at this point in time, this is irreversible disease of the teeth and will lead to bone loss and formation of pus between the gum and teeth. Advanced periodontal disease can be very painful for your pet and often the best course of treatment is surgically removing the teeth.

Periodontal disease is best prevented and there are several things that you

can do to make sure your dog or cat has a clean and pain free mouth.

The best thing you can do is brush your pet’s teeth daily but many animals will not tolerate this.

There are commercially available diets such as the Hills Science Diet T/D, which will reverse the build up of mild calculus and prevent future build up. Also providing your pets with chewable treats such as dentastix and greenies are great for reducing plaque build up.

Minimising wet food is also great as wet food tends to cling to the teeth and cause a build up of bacteria. Bones are

It is remarkable because of the many eyewitness accounts of Jesus’ resurrection.

Consider the Apostle Peter in the Bible’s book of Acts. Peter declares

to his listeners, “You know what has happened. We are eyewitnesses of everything Jesus did. God raised him from the dead. He was seen by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead”.

While the eyewitness evidence is convincing, the implications are huge!

The Bible is clear; Jesus rose from the dead, proving he was God himself coming into our world, and that Jesus is alive now!

Since Jesus is alive now, not only does this let us know there is life after death, it also reveals how Jesus is offering any person who would trust him to also have this eternal life!

Don’t let the sceptics or cynics take you in!

Check the evidence for yourself! Jesus is alive and well, calling on you to enjoy real life in him!

When it comes to milk there used to be one choice consumers had to make: full fat or skim.

These days the supermarket shelves are overflowing with milk and milk alternatives, making it tough to know what’s right for you and your family.

This week I thought I’d try and wade through the options to help make sense of the world of milk.

Full fat milk As most of us already know cow’s milk is a great source of calcium and protein.

Unfortunately full fat milk is also more calorie dense and higher in saturated fat than reduced fat varieties.

When tossing up between full fat vs reduced fat, consider your diet as a whole.

If the majority of your diet is low in saturated fat then a serve of full fat milk a day may be OK, but keep in mind that one glass of milk can contain up to a third of your daily saturated fat requirements.

Low fat/reduced fat/skim milk Reduced fat options still contain all the benefits of full fat milk, but with a lower energy and saturated fat content. The Australian Dietary Guidelines suggest

choosing reduced fat milk where possible, although low fat varieties are not recommended for children under two.

There is a misconception that skim milk contains added sugar, but in reality the only difference between the two is that skim milk has the fat skimmed off.

Soy milk Soy milk is a lactose-free option and a common choice for those who are lactose intolerant or choose not to consume dairy due to taste preferences or following a vegan diet. Soy milk alone is not a good source of calcium.

Almond milk Almond milk has taken off in recent years as an alternative to soy milk. It is lower in energy content than both cow’s milk and soy milk but unfortunately it’s also lower in protein and calcium and can be high in sugar. If you prefer almond milk look out for unsweetened calciumfortified varieties.

Rice milk Rice milk has a similar nutrient profile to almond milk, being low in calories, protein and calcium. Once again calciumfortified varieties are best.

How do you get your closet organised once and for all?

A neat and tidy closet wardrobe makes finding that new season handbag that you stashed away quick and easy.

You also eliminate the daily struggle of “I have nothing to wear” and “I can’t find...”.

Having everything neat and sorted right where you know everything should be cuts plenty of time in the morning.

Step one: To stop yourself from getting completely overwhelmed by the process, start by taking everything out.

Step two: Keep it simple and separate everything into piles: the wear frequently pile, the wear occasionally pile, the haven’t worn in the last two years pile or clothes that don’t fit, and unique items, like formal gowns.

Focus on what you have worn in the last three months, if you have items of clothing that go with a lot of other pieces in the wardrobe, keep them.

Try not to hesitate too much, make the decision then and there for what truly serves no purpose in your closet.

Give generously to a charity bin all your clothing that is still in good condition that you no longer wear, a great way to help support your community.

If you have a wardrobe and a chest of drawers to use, this makes sorting closet space fairly easy.

Use the luxury of hanging space in your closet for this season’s clothing only, and store the rest in drawers including the one-off special event clothing.

This means all your jackets and warmer clothes are ready to go, saving you from wishing for summer and digging through all that swim wear and breezy cami tops that you know you won’t wear until the sun warms up again.

Finally, hang everything back up in colour order instead of length etc.

All of your dresses long or short with sleeves or no sleeves, focus on colour theming them, visually this makes it quick and easier for you to pick what one to wear.

Time to hit the shops for new clothes – you have earned it!

oung daredevil Alexander Adamson first got into the actionpacked sport of dirt bike riding after he asked Santa for a Pee Wee 50 motorbike for Christmas when he was just four-years-old.

Thankfully, jolly old St Nick delivered and the now eight-year-old has been excelling on his bike ever since.

Last week the Year 3 student at Emu Plains Public School competed at the 2017 Australian Junior Track Championships, finishing an impressive third in the Division 2 50cc Auto 7-U9 event.

Speaking with the Weekender, Alexander said while the competition was incredibly tough, he had a ball competing against kids from around the country.

“It’s a very fun sport and I like getting trophies,” he said.

“The other competitors were very hard to beat, I had about nine or 10 riders in my race.”

Competing since he was seven-yearsold, Alexander has had a successful year on the track finishing second at the Central Coast Cup, third at the Casey Stoner Cup and fourth at the NSW Junior Dirt Track Championships.

Alexander will return to the saddle this weekend when he competes at the NSW Junior Long Track Titles in Kurri Kurri, near Newcastle.

“I’m kind of nervous about this weekend’s event because I’ll be coming up against some hard riders,” Alexander admitted.

“As a member of the City of Penrith Motorcycle Club, I practice as much as I can at Nepean Raceway in Castlereagh to get ready.”

While dirt bike racing is his number one passion and his current focus, Alexander also plays soccer for Emu Plains and enjoys to swim.

Alexander said he’s the envy of his friends at school and hopes to continue to ride as he gets older.

“Yeah my friends are kind of jealous…

I’d like to continue doing this as long as possible,” he said.

Basketball remains popular but growth Dreams are made in Penrith: How our local basketball association creates the stars of the future and Tell me about your basketball background, how did you fall in love with the sport?

I started playing at high school and at university I dabbled in coaching.

On taking up my teaching appointment, I started coaching with Blue Mountains Basketball.

When moving to Bathurst to start work at the stadium, I was lucky enough to become involved in the State program as an assistant coach.

In my time at Penrith Basketball I have coached club and representative teams as well as coaching a number of New South Wales teams in Australian Championships.

How long have you been the President of the Penrith & Districts Basketball Association for?

I have been President of the Association for four years.

How long have you been involved with basketball and what were your previous roles?

I have been involved in basketball for 30 years.

During that time I have been a Basketball Development Officer at both Bathurst and Penrith Basketball Stadiums.

I moved from Development Officer to Stadium Manager at Penrith and occupied that position for 12 years.

When I returned to teaching, I was elected to the Board of Penrith Basketball where I have served as Financial Director and President.

As President of the Association my role involves working with fellow Board members and the Association General Manager to ensure the smooth running

of the Association and to plan for future directions.

I attend meetings with Presidents of other Associations to share ideas and develop a common goal for the growth of the sport.

What are some of the challenges/issues facing basketball locally?

With the significant growth of the Penrith Basketball Association over recent years, it has been a challenge to ensure that we have enough coaches and referees to conduct our competitions.

Therefore one of the major challenges for the future is to ensure we can recruit volunteers and offer appropriate training to allow them to positively contribute to the running of the local competitions and development of junior players.

still on the agenda provides an opportunity for everyone to play As the sport continues to grow we need to ensure we have enough courts to cater for the growth.

If you could improve one area of your sport on a local level, what would it be?

As mentioned previously, we need to continue to improve the training of our club coaches and referees to ensure that all participants not only compete regularly, but develop their skill levels to higher levels.

Are you happy with the amount of Local and State Government funding your club receives or could you do with more financial help?

The Association has always been supported by local and state governments.

As with most sports, financial funding is always appreciated.

There are always plenty of success stories about basketball in the Western Weekender, what is the one thing you are most proud of?

I am extremely proud that we have offered a pathway that has given many players the opportunity to achieve at higher levels.

We have had a number of players repre-

sent Australia at both junior and senior level and play in the National Basketball League and Women’s National Basketball League.

We have also had local juniors play overseas in professional leagues and in the US college system.

How many registered members does the Penrith & Districts Basketball Association currently have and how do you plan to grow the game?

We have approximately 2700 registered members.

We plan to continue to work in local schools to promote the game and support our local basketball clubs who do a wonderful job of ensuring that anyone who wants to play the game gets the opportunity to do so.

Looking into your crystal ball, where do you see the sport locally in five years time?

I see the number of participants increasing and more players, coaches and referees not only representing Penrith, but NSW and Australia as well.

There will also be the need to maintain and develop high quality facilities to cater for this growth.

Meanwhile, Fox and her younger sister Noemie have teamed up with fellow Australian paddler Kate Eckhardt to win bronze in the U23 K1 teams event.

The Aussie trio finished third behind the Czech Republic and Great Britain in the competitionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s final event.

Once again the Australian team was dogged by 50 second penalties, with several of the teams posting fast times only to be taken out of medal contention by the missed gate penalties.

Australia finished with two medals for the Championships, with the elder Fox winning gold in the U23 K1 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; her fourth consecutive gold medal in that event and the 11th of her U23 and Junior career.

Much to the joy of her fellow competitors, it was the last time the 23-year-old local will be eligible for the under-age event.

Fox will remain in Europe ahead of the next World Cup, to be held in Italy in early September.

With the NBL and NCAA seasons only a few months away, both teams will be out to prove a point during their pre-season campaigns.

Sydney Kings star Tom Garlepp will play in Penrith next month against the University of Oklahoma

31-year-old Garlepp will enter his sixth year with the Kings when the 2017/18 NBL season gets underway in October. He will once again provide size, leadership and scoring off the bench for popular Kings coach Andrew Gaze.

Garlepp said some of his best memories in basketball have been playing in boutique venues like the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre. â&#x20AC;&#x153;While playing in the lower leagues, I think some of my best basketball memories have happened in smaller venues because the crowd really sits on top of you,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It can be a really fantastic environment to play in, and hopefully we get the crowd behind us and we can create that same sort of atmosphere.â&#x20AC;?

The University of Oklahoma is the former college of NBA superstar Blake Griffin.

The team will play three games in Australia against the Sutherland Sharks, Sydney Kings and Cairns Taipans.

The Sydney Kings will take on the University of Oklahoma on Thursday, August 10 at the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $5 for kids and $25 for a family of four.

RUGBY: The Penrith Emus are down to just a couple of chances to win a game this season after being hammered by Southern Districts 76-12 in Round 16 of the Shute Shield competition. Down 45-0 at half-time, Penrith werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to stop the punishment being delivered by Southern Districts in the second half.

AUSSIE RULES: The Penrith Rams have won three straight games, defeating the Pennant Hills Demons 83-29 in a catch-up game of the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition.

AFL: The GWS Giants have lost back to back games, defeated by Richmond 64-45 in a low scoring affair at the MCG last Sunday. The Giants led by 20 points at the end of the first term before heavy rain began to wreak havoc, turning the contest on its head. Despite the loss, the Giants remain in third place and will take on Fremantle this Saturday at Spotless Stadium.

NETBALL: The Panthers Opens team have played out a 48-all draw with the ERNA Hawks in Round 8 of the Netball NSW Premier League competition. Meanwhile, the Panthers Under 20â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s have won three in a row, smashing the Hawks 73-44.

Both teams will take on the Sutherland Stingrays in Round 9.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers have continued their awful end to the year, blown away by the Central Coast Crusaders 101-70 in Round 19 of the Division 1 Youth League Menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s competition. Thomas Akamarmoi drained a team-high 27 points for the Panthers. Penrith will look to bounce back when they face the Norths Bears in the final round of the regular season this Saturday. A big win as well as other results going their way could still see the Panthers reach the playoffs. Meanwhile, Penrithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Division 1 Youth League Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team are playoffs bound after defeating the Hills Hornets 63-54.

Tatiana Beaumont top scored for the Panthers with 15 points. Penrith will take on the Central Coast Crusaders this Saturday afternoon.

GOLF: Leonay Golf Club Head Professional Ben Breckenridge ran his first Junior Clinic during the school holidays, with plenty of kids coming along. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All of the kids appeared to have a great time and lots of them showed some real potential,â&#x20AC;?

Breckenridge said.

RACING: New Zealand pacer Ohoka Jimmy took out the Western Weekender Pace at the Penrith Paceway last Thursday night. W Komorowski drove the favourite to an impressive win over Gest As Smart and Dance On Ice in the 1,720 metre event. The margins were 1.8m by 8.8m, with Chic Boutique coming in last.

eonay paddler Jessica Fox has bounced back from heartbreak 24 hours earlier to claim gold at her final individual appearance at the U23 Canoe Slalom World Championships in Slovakia.

Last Friday the two-time Olympic medallist was left devastated after a 50-second penalty robbed her of certain gold in the final of the U23 C1 event.

The following day Fox showed her true class and expertise, racing within herself to ensure she would snare a fourth consecutive U23 K1 gold.

“There are days when you can have great big lows, and to come around and get back out there, it’s what I love,” Fox said.

“This is 50 times sweeter than yesterday.

Yesterday was pretty draining emotionally. I gave everything in that run, and afterwards I was very upset emotionally.

“Today I didn’t want to give the video judges any chance of giving me an asterisk or a 50, I wanted to be middle of the gates. I definitely had that fire from yesterday.”
