Council’s push to preserve history leaves Fernhill cemetery plan...

ngry Penrith Councillors have moved to protect the heritage of Mulgoa Valley by banning cemeteries from being developed in the historic part of Penrith. Rookwood General Cemeteries Reserve Trust entered into a due diligence process to purchase Fernhill Estate to “address the issues of burial shortages” in April, but the plan is now in tatters. “To me, it would be sacrilege to put a cemetery in that location,” Councillor Greg Davies said at Monday night’s Ordinary Council meeting.
Councillor Ross Fowler said it wasn’t just about protecting the historical homestead. “What is equally important is the landscape... it’s irreplaceable, you can’t replicate it,” he said. Councillor Mark Davies targeted Rookwood, saying it “shows a degree of arrogance and lack of understanding” that they “think it is appropriate to have a cemetery there”. Councillors also vowed to immediately write to NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Planning Minister Anthony Roberts indicating their “firm stance” in relation to the Rookwood plan for Fernhill and other potential cemeteries.
