2015 will see The Joan celebrating its 25th anniversary with a varied program to cater for the whole family including world premiere theatre, hilarious comedy shows and musical performances that cover every genre from rock to classical. “A lot of thought goes into the program,” The Joan’s Music Producer, Valda Silvy said. “When I look at the music program I have to think what the audience would want from this region and what is attractive and... what is the best that I can offer them.” The 2015 season will kick off on Saturday, January 17 with Damien Leith’s one man cabaret play ‘The Parting Glass’. The show has recently featured at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and showcases Leith’s talent as a musician and actor. Following on from ‘The Parting Glass’ will be Rachael Beck and David Hobson in ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’ on Saturday, February 14. This unique show celebrates Valentine’s Day with a mix of classical, pop and musical theatre songs. Come March the centre will allow visitors a chance to see the inner workings and enjoy a range of activities with The Joan’s 25th Anniversary Community Celebration Day. Taking place on Saturday, March 28 the celebrations will feature acclaimed musicians Christine Anu and Archie Roach. May will bring audiences the tap extravaganza ‘BPM – Beats Per Minute’ and plenty of laughs with the return of the Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow. It will be all about love in June and July with Alana Valentine’s acclaimed ‘Head Full of Love’ along with the world premiere of Hit Productions’ tale of lost love between Henry Lawson and Mary Gilmore in ‘All My Love’. The second half of the 2015 season shows no sign of slowing down with ‘Ladies in Lavender’, which has been adapted from the film starring Maggie Smith and Judi Dench. The show, which stars Genevieve Lemon and Penny Cook, will be making its way to The Joan in August after a premiere season at the Ensemble. Saturday, August 29 will see The Joan putting on an anniversary concert to celebrate the 25 year milestone. The concert will feature some of classical music’s finest including Amelia Farrugia, Tamara Cislowska and The Song Company along
Throughout the year it will be celebration after celebration, in all of the performing arts
with new works by composer Elena KatsChernin. The Wharf Revue will also be celebrating this year with its 15th season. The satirical show is a favourite on The Joan calendar and is sure to once again have audiences roaring with laughter when it premieres in September. October will feature Kim Carpenter’s Theatre of Image, ‘Monkey... Journey to the West’ along with the very funny Golden Girls Comedy ‘Thank You For Being A Friend’. Finally, to round out another stellar year, is a performance of Vivaldi’s ‘The Four Seasons’ on Saturday, November 28. The concert will bring together Richard Tognetti, the Australian Chamber Orchestra and oud player Joseph Tawadros. “Throughout the year it will be celebration after celebration, in all of the performing arts,” Ms Silvy said. Though it’s an impressive list it’s not an exhaustive one. The Joan has plenty more performances planned for the 2015 season including local theatre productions and the return of Morning Melodies and Richard Bonynge Piano series. Due to demand from audiences, 2015 will also see the return of The Joan’s subscription packages. If you haven’t yet experienced a performance at The Joan, 2015 is definitely the year to start. Not only is there a variety of shows on offer but the centre is also very welcoming to visitors. “The Joan Sutherland building is for the community, everyone’s invited and everyone should come and participate
and enjoy the wonderful programs we have offered,” Ms Silvy said. For more information on The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre 2015 season or subscription packages visit www.thejoan.com.au or call 4723 7600.

Shaky at times, but a beautiful game to play
s a gamer who has often been annoyed by open world games that don’t just let the story flow from start to finish, I was pleasantly surprised by ‘Far Cry 4’. Perhaps it was because of the ease of navigation – from the large open world map, through to the range of vehicles that help you get to your desired location, whether it be a main mission or a side-task like liberating an outpost or conquering a bell tower. ‘Far Cry 4’ is full of explosive highs, and only a few lows. There’s occasions where things can feel repetitive, like the bell tower scenes, but there’s no doubt that the game immerses you with its amazing graphics and open world environment that has something new and confronting at every turn. As you try to assist the nation of Kyrat, you face

enormous challenges, not just from human bad guys, but from native animals that aren’t just there to look pretty. For those who have played other Ubisoft games, some things will feel very familiar, such as tearing propaganda posters from walls, and some of the styles attached to the side missions. Overall, ‘Far Cry 4’ is an excellent game, addictive at times, and certainly beautiful to play. It suffers from some character development issues and some frustrating moments in terms of storyline, but overall it’s a game that is well worth the investment. - Troy Dodds

Looking back at the year that was Well, it’s that time of year again when I hand out my famous ‘Chatter on the Box’ Awards for the year. These awards dictate what I think have been the hits, misses and surprises of Australian television in 2014. I’ll also give you my run down of what shows to look out for in 2015. I’d like to thank all readers for another great year! See you in 2015!
Best Australian Reality Show: House Rules. I couldn’t go past the home renovation show this year. For someone that’s not a fan of these types of shows, I was absolutely hooked this year and can’t wait for a double dose next year. ‘House Rules’ was hands-down better than Nine’s ‘The Block’ and I look forward to the battle these two shows will have in 2015.
Person I Used To Hate: Grant Denyer. Who would have thought me, Nathan Taylor, would ever say I like Grant Denyer. Well, I do, and I’m happy to admit it. After years of bagging him out, I’m finally a fan thanks to him to hosting the lovable ‘Family Feud’. Keep up the good work, Grant!
Funniest Show of the Year: ‘Jonah of Tonga’. It was a show I tipped last year would be a hit, and it certainly was in my house. You can’t go past a Chris Lilley comedy and this well and truly had it all. It was rude, crude and downright hilarious. Here’s hoping another series is not far away!
Worst Shows of the Year: There were plenty of shockers this year, here are just a few – ‘The Big Adventure’, ‘The Voice’, ‘The Bachelor Australia’, ‘The Biggest Loser’, ‘The Footy Show’, ‘The X-Factor’, ‘Dancing with the Stars’, ‘Winners and Losers’, ‘Wake Up’ and ‘Studio 10’.
Most Anticipated New Shows: Not much drama but plenty of reality again next year including ‘Restaurant Revolution’, ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here’, ‘Shark Tank’, ‘Gallipoli’, ‘Catching Milat’ ‘The Bachelorette’, ‘What Really Happens in Thailand’ and ‘Pawn Stars Australia’.

After the success of smash hit ‘Anaconda’, which features the sampling of Sir Mix-A-Lot’s 90s hit ‘Baby Got Back’, plus ‘Pills n Potions’, ‘Only’ and now ‘Bed of Lies’, Nicki Minaj is set to soar again with her third studio album ‘The Pink Print’. Having recently featured in the remix to the huge Beyoncé hit, ‘***Flawless’, Minaj is undoubtedly bigger and badder than ever before. ‘The Pinkprint’ even features Beyoncé on the track ‘Feeling Myself’, which is said to feel like a natural progression from the recent ‘***Flawless’ remix. The new album also features artists such as Ariana Grande, Drake, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Jeremih and Skylar Grey. Minaj’s trademark rapping style has seen her become the most celebrated female rapper in history, with multiple Grammy and Billboard Music Award nominations. The new album as a whole is said to reveal Minaj as a fully rounded character with personal stories of love and loss in tracks like ‘I Lied’ and ‘Favourite’. Minaj recently hosted the 2014 MTV European Music Awards, further diversifying her already well-known personality and showing fans why they fell in love with her.

‘A Long Way Down’ is based on the novel by Nick Hornby which tells the story of four strangers who meet in less than happy circumstances. Martin (Pierce Brosnan) an ex-talk show host, Maureen (Toni Collette) a lonely single mum with a disabled son, Jess (Imogen Poots), a young girl with family problems and JJ (Aaron Paul) a struggling wannabe rock star have each decided to jump off the roof of the London high-rise Topper’s Tower on New Year’s Eve. But after coming together as lost souls, the four end up deciding to delay their plans for six weeks. During that time they form a strange sort of family, helping each other to find the reason they need to keep going. When the British black comedy was released earlier this year, it received negative reviews from critics around the world, so rent this movie if you dare. ‘A Long Way Down’ is rated M and now available in stores.
Based on the much loved musical, ‘Annie’ is a contemporary adaptation that stars a host of talent including Quvenzhane Wallis, who was the youngest actress in history to receive a nomination for Best Actress at the Academy Awards for her role as Hushpuppy in ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’. The story of ‘Annie’ revolves around a foster child of the same name who lives with a not so nice foster mum, Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz). Annie was originally left as a baby, though her parents promised they would return for her one day. Life with Miss Hannigan is pretty bleak until business tycoon and mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) decides to boost his public profile by spending time with the young girl. Eventually he is won over by her positive attitude, teaching him plenty of life lessons along the way. ‘Annie’ has already been nominated for two Golden Globe Awards and is sure to be a fun holiday film for the whole family.

s long-time traditionalists who found it hard coming to grips with the idea of ditching the hot turkey at Christmas in favour of cold seafoods and salads, we’re now finding it even more challenging seeing growing numbers going back to ‘hot’, but in the form of roasts done outdoors on Aussie Christmas Days in covered barbecues. Quite a number of neighbours, friends and even relatives have told us they’re doing slow cooked barbecueoven roasts this year such as beef butts, lamb legs or shoulders, racks, or even piles of shanks. And when some of these ‘new age’ types asked if we could suggest a good wine to go with their outdoor beef or lamb and accompanying hot-baked trimmings, we suggested splurging a little with a Voyager Estate Margaret River 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, which matches perfectly with both the beef and the lamb. Not the cheapest at $70, however an outstanding drop made from fruit off three exceptional vineyards mainly planted back in the mid-1990s. With wonderful fruit purity on the palate, and a richness and freshness they’ll certainly find hard to beat with those meat choices. One to note: The Hunter Valley’s Andrew Margan, on the other hand, is a traditionalist planning on matching this year’s family honey-baked ham on Christmas Day with his 2014 Margan Chardonnay, a very rewarding drop at a nicely-priced $18 for those of us to whom Chardonnay will always remain a favourite tipple. 2014 was particular good for Chardonnay in the Hunter, and this one is a great buy-now, drink-now wine that’ll reward at the festive table this Christmas.

Christmas fun comes to St Marys FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12 – COACHMAN’S PARK
hristmas cheer was well and truly on display in St Marys on Friday, December 12 for the lighting of the 20ft Christmas tree in Coachman’s Park. This free event saw the whole family enjoy a festive evening out to witness this beautiful tree as it lit up the night’s sky. It wasn’t just about the tree though, there was also plenty of entertainment along with a range of market stalls. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Christmas celebration without the jolly man himself who made a stop off from his very busy schedule to greet the crowds and grab some photos in front of the beautiful tree. Being Santa isn’t an easy job, so he brought along some helpers including reindeer and elves.

The year that was in fashion KATHERINE TWEED

part of every woman’s daily makeup collection because we all know how important our brows are. Wash-off tan is just ingenious. It takes just a couple of minutes to put on, if you mess it up you can just wash it off and start again.
katherine.tweed@ westernweekender. com.au @ktweed_
It’s the end of another year of fashion and what a year it has been. We have seen the comeback of trends we just didn’t see coming, saw beauty trends come and go and saw celebrities making inappropriate outfits become mainstream. We all had our hair done balayage-style, exposed our midriffs and rooted through op-shops for something vintage – thank the hipster movement for that. In a festive send-off, I’m looking back at this year in fashion and awarding titles to the trends we loved, hated and everything in between.
The shoe you had to have This one has to go down to two-strap heels. While it takes some time for us to learn to walk in them properly, once mastered the two-strap heel is second to none. If you have a pair in nude, you will never have to worry about matching your shoes to your outfit again. Nude or not, two-strap heels make your legs look longer and give any outfit an elegant edge.
Most surprising comeback This title goes to a new comeback, one that has just emerged in the last month and one that I never, ever thought I would see again, in fact, I had forgotten that it was ever a trend. The stretch tattoo choker is something that I remember having as a kid. I wore it a few times but mostly I envied those who pulled it off and honestly, I still feel the same way about them. They give that effortless cool, almost hippie-like look and I am tipping this one to last for a while.
2014 has been an interesting year in fashion, with lots of highs and lows and a few surprises
Best new look It isn’t a personal favourite, but I have to award this one to the two-piece. Matching skirt and crop top combinations have been huge this year and have taken us through the winter into spring and now into summer. I am awarding it the ‘best new look’ title because of its versatility and the fact that you literally can’t go into a store without seeing one. Best new product I couldn’t choose between brow palettes and instant wash-off tan so I am handing out a dual-prize for this one. Both products have been done before but they have boomed this year and for most of us, they are new. A brow palette, which includes a wax and a powder for filling in and shaping brows daily, should be

Emerging trend This one goes to the trend that we will be wearing come 2015 and, as I hinted earlier, I think it is going to be the boho/hippie look. We’re going to be wearing lots of earthy tones, quirky jewellery and flowing offthe-shoulder tops. We’ll be taking a ride back to the 60s for this trend but without the vibrant colours. To ease into it, get your hands on a kimono in a light weight fabric and earthy tones.

What’s what in Antique jewellery Have you ever purchased anything from an antique dealer? It can be tricky to know what’s real and what isn’t as hallmarks (if the piece has any) can be confusing. I’ve got some tips to help you make good choices when looking at antique jewellery to make sure that you are getting what you pay for. First on the list is to look for hallmarks or stamps and know how to identify them. On a piece of jewellery you will generally find a stamp to tell you what the gold or metal type is, and sometimes you will also find the hallmark of the jeweller who made the piece. Silver will be stamped 925, 9ct yellow or white gold will be stamped 375, 9ct or 9k, 18ct yellow or white gold will be stamped 750, 18ct or 18k. Platinum can be represented by PLAT, PT or 950 and palladium, which is a derivative of platinum, is often stamped PALL. Look for these inside the band if it’s a ring, on the bail if it’s a pendant and on the butterfly if it’s a pair of earrings that you are selecting. Generally these stamps will be out of plain sight so you may have to dig a little. Hallmarks from the jewellers themselves aren’t a necessity, however it may be of importance to you if you are looking at a ‘designer’ piece of jewellery. Something else to look for is wear and tear (chips and abrasions) on the stones themselves and the settings. Ask to use the loupe or a magnifying glass if you are unsure of details when viewing with the naked eye. At York Jewellers we have the technology to be able to restore heirlooms and antiques. If you are planning on wearing your older pieces often it’s always a good idea to have an expert assess them to avoid any heart break! The last thing you want is for a stone to come loose or a weakened setting break. On another note, if you haven’t already entered our 12 Days of Christmas giveaway you still have time. The winners of 12 stunning, hand-selected prizes (one over $8,000 in value) are being drawn on Christmas Eve. How do you enter? Simply spend in-store at York Jewellers and for every $100 you will receive an entry into the giveaway. Best of luck!

ARIES MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
TAURUS APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
Taureans are in a terrifically festive mood, as you enjoy the Yuletide revelry. A strategic, streamlined approach is the key to successful preparations. If you plan carefully and prioritise, then you’ll get everything done without too much stress. But, if you eat and drink too much on Christmas Day, you’ll be a grumpy Bull on Boxing Day!
GEMINI MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
Gung-ho Gemini – are you mega-stressed and super busy but you’re actually achieving very little? Slow down and work your way through your to-do list one logical step at a time. A truck-load of tact is required on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, otherwise you could find yourself smack bang in the middle of a feisty family feud, as you blurt out the wrong thing to the wrong person at the wrong time!
JOANNE MADELINE MOORE
Many Librans will host Christmas celebrations at home this year but communication between guests looks somewhat chaotic. It will take considerable Libran diplomatic skills to keep children under control; parents from getting paranoid; and family members from fighting. When in doubt take 10 long deep breaths and carry on!
Star predictions for the week beginning Dec 22

SCORPIO OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Avoid getting too intense, serious and stressed. A cool and methodical approach is the best way to handle the ongoing Christmas celebrations. And you’ll need to be extra diplomatic if you want to avoid a fraction too much friction with family members. Tread carefully and resist the temptation to be a sulky Scorpio.
SAGITTARIUS NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Expect a momentous Christmas week, as Saturn shifts into Sagittarius (for the first time since 1988). So it’s the perfect time to give your new serious and responsible persona a trial run with discerning relatives. Plus avoid being impatient and superficial when communicating with loved ones. Listen closely, and then look beneath the surface meaning to discover (and understand) what’s really going on.
CAPRICORN DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
There’s no getting away from intense family relationships this week. Clannish Crabs are the keepers of the family flame, so do all you can to gather loved ones together over the next few days. But don’t labour under the ridiculous delusion that you can handle everything on your own. Cooperation is the secret to a successful Christmas.
With the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Pluto all moving through your sign it’s up to you to handle Christmas celebrations with stacks of cool Capricorn style and composure. Be smart enough to rise above silly family squabbles! As birthday great Marlene Dietrich wisely observed “Courage and grace are a formidable mixture”.
LEO JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
AQUARIUS JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Party-loving Lions love the colourful drama of Yuletide celebrations. Just make sure you’re pulling your weight on Christmas Day – with preparations and cleaning up – otherwise you’ll be in the bad books on Boxing Day. Even though it’s the height of the festive season, strive to make your food choices as healthy and nutritious as possible.
Adventurous Aquarians are in the mood for plenty of Yuletide cheer and holiday hijinks! You’re in festive spirits as Uranus revs up your restless side and lowers your tolerance levels. Issues from the past could also cloud your judgment this week. So enjoy the Christmas celebrations but leave important decision-making for another time.
VIRGO AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
PISCES FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Christmas looks somewhat stressful next week. It will be very easy to feel unsettled and obsess over small details and minor matters. So, in order to avoid having a Virgo brain snap, heed the wise words of birthday great Quentin Crisp “Treat all disasters as if they were trivialities, but never treat a triviality as if it were a disaster.”

LIBRA SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
This week your intense, impulsive and impetuous side is likely to go into overdrive, as you long to step in and take charge of festive proceedings. But perhaps it would be much smarter to slow down, delegate and cooperate? Too much bossy behaviour will only put others offside. So strive to be a gentle lamb this Christmas season.
Have you left most of your Christmas shopping to the last minute? If you make a list and pace yourself, then you’ll get the gifts you need without too many problems. Look for creative presents that stimulate the imagination. But if you spend more than you can comfortably afford then you’ll just end up with a heap of New Year debt.

Price has an emotional impact at times, unless of course you are a capuchin monkey

Are you smarter than a monkey? The human race prides itself on being the most intelligent species on Earth. But are we really smarter than every other creature walking, sliding, swimming or flying around the world? While it’s not hard to believe you are more intelligent than the average domestic pet, there are some animals out there that can definitely give us a run for our money. In fact, money is the very root of a study that proves capuchin monkeys are – at least in one respect – smarter than the average person. Researchers from Yale University studied a group of monkeys to see if they could be fooled to believe a higher price tag means better quality. There have been many studies that claim to show humans are easily influenced by dollar signs. For instance, in 2008, the researchers from the California Institute of Technology found participants attached to a brain monitor experienced more pleasure when drinking from a higher priced bottle of wine, even though the cheaper bottle contained the exact same drop. Price, then, obviously has a deep-seated emotional impact. In humans, at least, monkeys are not fooled by price tags! With monkeys able to keep a clear head and stick to their guns in regards to personal taste preferences, even when facing a higher price tag, they could be the perfect shopping partner. How to make sure you are smarter than a monkey? Of course, we can’t all have a capuchin monkey sitting on our shoulder when shopping for a drop of vino. Instead, here are three quick tips to ensure you don’t fall into a price trap. Ignore the price tag: When making a purchasing decision, try to avoid looking at the price until you’ve decided if you like the item or not. Don’t dismiss budget stores: While budget doesn’t always mean value, it can be worth checking out your local discount stores for a bargain or two. Get advice: If you’re not a big connoisseur of what you are buying, you might be tempted to make choices based on price. Instead, get some expert advice and you may be surprised by what someone in the know has to say.
FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION
Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...
How does fitness feature in your life? Since I was born my father has trained many champion fighters, so kickboxing has always been part of my life. I have trained on and off since I could walk but really got serious in my training a couple of years ago. I got my nutrition right and started a strict training program. The program runs six days a week and includes technical work, one-on-one drills, high intensity cardio work, strength training, and sparring. I started competing this year and have done very well in kickboxing and boxing. I am excited about opportunities next year where I have some fights planned overseas and hope to be in a position to fight for a South Pacific title on a big show in Sydney in May 2015. My goal is to win a world title in 2016!
two nutrition shakes and a protein style bar. I also do a weekly day cleanse to rid my body of any impurities.
Top 3 tips for good health? 1. Get your nutrition right to fuel your body for optimum performance. You need to put ‘super’ in your ‘engine’ if you want it to run well 2. Get the correct technical training. Find a trainer who takes the time to get you technically correct. An efficient strike comes from excellent technique including body movement 3. Stay motivated by keeping it interesting and goal setting. My sprint training is mixed up with touch football and soccer games
What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? Striking the pads during pad-work sessions. I believe it is the ultimate workout if you have the right trainer. A trainer skilled in pad-work will train your entire body in a workout.
Biggest health/fitness misconception? It’s not the “harder you train” it’s the “smarter you train”. You train too hard and don’t give your body time to repair you will burn out and get fatigue, so listen to your body. Train the correct technique, keep focused while training, and keep the intensity high. It’s not the amount of time you’re in the gym, it’s what you put into the time you are there. What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? I can perform at a competitive level. I feel great and always have an abundance of energy.
A daily ‘must do’? Fuel my body so I can train efficiently. I make sure I have a good breakfast and eat regularly during the day. This consists of

I had a woman telling me all about how dangerous this raw milk fad was this week. While she was bestowing on me her wordly wisdom she was sucking on a cigarette and had her can of Diet Coke in her other hand. In what white bread, anti bacterialised, scared little world is raw milk part of a ‘fad’ diet? Any culture that has ever farmed livestock for at least the last 10,000 years has drank raw milk, and many many millions of people still do if they are lucky enough to have access to it. I remember reading how Nelson Mandela would let his raw milk sit on the window sill till it became fermented, it’s called Amasi. Whether it’s cow, camel, reindeer or horse, if you put a bucket of warm fresh milk straight out of the cow in front of your great grandparents from whatever culture your background is they would thank you for it. Do it to some people now and they choke on their plastic cup of latte made on sterilised, defatted, heat treated, permeate-free sad imitation of milk. It’s like any food product, if it gets contaminated it will make you sick, just like those old prawns or dodgy kebab. If you mishandle human breast milk it will go off and could make a baby sick. So should we pass a law that mothers express then sterilise it before baby gets it? It comes down to handling it properly like any food. If milk is unpasteurised it has to be obtained, stored and handled properly! Don’t forget many people still get sick from infections from pasteurised milk. So why is it legal for this big mouth woman, who gets her ‘wisdom’ from one sided news reports, to stand on a street and blow poisonous smoke into the air I’m breathing? But if someone wants to drink some healthier milk at home we should outlaw it? Of course it’s silly to say it’s coincidence that big industry has a huge interest in those outcomes. Did you know the company that owns our big pasteurised milk producers is a brewery company? I wonder if alcohol has ever been linked to any deaths? Merry Christmas! And Enjoy your eggnog, whatever milk you use!

Dogs and cats who are vomiting should be monitored and possibly seen by a vet
VET
VIEW FROM ABOVE
Christmas is a danger time for our pets
Happy Christmas, but what does it mean?
Every year during the Christmas season we usually see a kitten or cat with a string foreign body. This is where a piece of string or tinsel becomes obstructed in the animal’s intestines. The contractions of the intestines allow the bowel to move along the string and the bowel then becomes twisted upon itself. This becomes a life threatening problem as the string acts as a ‘saw’ through the intestines. This often is an emergency and requires surgery to remove the foreign object from the intestine and sometimes requires the bowel to be resected. Most animals will recover from this procedure but recovery can be long. The symptoms of this disease are vomiting, decreased appetite, abdominal pain and lethargy. Animals that love eating strange objects are especially at risk. Most animals will vomit from time to time but it is important to know when to seek veterinary attention. If your animal is having multiple vomits and is not eating then it is important to see a veterinarian. When animals have vomiting and diarrhoea, the fluid loss adds up quickly and they can become very dehydrated – seeing a veterinarian when there is both vomiting and diarrhoea is recommended. Most happy adult dogs and cats with the occasional vomit that continue to eat normally with no changes in behaviour are probably OK to be left and monitored. Otherwise a trip to the vet is recommended. In the meantime, withhold food for 12-24 hours and always remember to check around the house and in the backyard for any further signs of vomiting. Dogs and cats will often vomit after eating grass. We are often asked if this means that they are sick? When dogs and cats eat grass, this actually induces vomiting. This is probably an evolutionary mechanism to rid carnivores’ stomach from things that are difficult to digest such as feathers and bones. Pets no longer eat grass for this reason but many cats and dogs seems to enjoy eating fresh green grass. Some animals will eat more grass than usual when they are nauseous causing them to vomit. Have a safe and happy holidays and remember to be careful with Christmas objects like tinsel and baubles around your pets!
In recent days how often have you found yourself saying, “Happy Christmas”? What do we mean by this? Have a good day? Enjoy some time off? Enjoy catching up with family and friends? Certainly these things are involved, but we know there is more to Christmas than a holiday, presents and enjoying fine food with family and friends. In the Bible’s book of Matthew we read how Joseph discovered that his wife to be, Mary, was pregnant. While Joseph was trying to figure it out, an angel appeared to him, speaking these important words. “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” As Australians we love the work of lifesavers, the men and women who patrol our beaches, rescuing us from any trouble we might find ourselves in. Jesus is THE great lifesaver who came to give his life to rescue us from the fact that none of us treats God as we should. Jesus didn’t stay a baby but grew up to die on a cross and rise again, an event, which for anyone who would commit their life to Jesus, will save them from the consequence of this rebellion. The rescue Jesus gives is forgiveness and the promise of eternal life, so no wonder people say, “Happy Christmas!” This Christmas make sure the joy of Christmas stays with you and your family, not just for the day or even a few days, but for all time.

Owner: Megan Hills Breed: Red Cattle Dog Gender: Male Age: 6 Spud is an active dog who loves to play fetch with Megan Hills’ nine-monthold daughter, Imogen. Spud also loves swimming in the river. “He gets very excited when we come outside with Imogen to play fetch. He covers her in licks and gives her the ball over and over,” Ms Hills said. Ms Hills believed Spud and Imogen have an especially unique bond. “He is just so affectionate with her and very protective,” she said. Spud is terrified of the hose and hates when the ball gets stuck on the roof because no amount of staring and jumping will get it back down. The weirdest thing about Spud according to Ms Hills, is that he was born without a tail. “We rescued him at only four weeks old and he is such a great dog,” she said. Spud’s affection for his owners and his playful, fun style has earned him the title of our Pet of the Week. Spud is our final Pet of the Week for 2014, but we’ll be back with more pets in 2015.

Over 100 seniors from across Penrith and the lower Blue Mountains were picked up by Rotarians from their homes and aged care facilities and transported to Emu Plains Sports and Recreation Club, where they were treated to a threecourse Christmas dinner. “The Rotary Club recognises that many senior citizens live alone in aged care facilities and do not have regular contact with family and friends,” a Rotary representative said. “No effort is spared to provide a complete Christmas celebration with quality Christmas carols. Every guest also received a personal Christmas card prepared by students at Lapstone Primary School, along with a gift from the Rotarians.” - Katherine Tweed

eye out for your copy which will arrive in time for Christmas,” he said in a statement this week. “A limited number of DVDs would also be provided for seniors through Members of Parliament.” The 2014 Seniors Christmas Concerts, themed ‘Twas The Month Before Christmas featured comedian Jean Kittson and television and musical theatre stars Rachael Beck and Ben Mingay. “This year’s concerts were a great success,” Mr Ajaka said. “These free events reflect the NSW Government’s commitment to supporting seniors to live active, healthy and socially connected lives, while more broadly supporting the cultural life of the state’s regions. “The DVD ensures that seniors who were unable to attend the concerts can enjoy the performances. It also can provide entertainment to seniors who are unable to spend Christmas with family or loved ones.” The Seniors Christmas Concerts are held free of charge and are provided as a thank you to the hardworking and well deserving seniors of NSW. The concerts tour different regional locations each year with Penrith hosting one in 2013. “I want to wish NSW Seniors a Merry Christmas and a healthy, safe and prosperous New Year,” Mr Ajaka added.
Christmas arrived early for many of the area’s seniors, who were treated to Rotary’s Young at Heart Christmas Party last weekend.
