Just when you thought the economic news was getting better with the fire breathing inflation dragon seemingly tamed, along comes the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) with another interest rate rise few ‘experts’ predicted.

After hitting the pause button last month following 10 consecutive increases to its cash rate in response to high inflation, the RBA was expected by many commentators to remain on the sidelines and further assess the impact of its measures over the past year.

Announcing the decision to lift the cash rate from 3.6 per cent to 3.85 per cent, RBA

Governor Dr Philip Lowe (pictured) said: “Inflation in Australia has passed its peak,

but at seven per cent is still too high and it will be some time yet before it is back in the target range (two to three per cent). Given the importance of returning inflation to target within a reasonable timeframe, the Board judged that a further increase in interest rates was warranted today.

“… While the recent data showed a welcome decline in inflation, the central forecast remains that it takes a couple of years before inflation returns to the top of the target range; inflation is expected to be four and a half per cent in 2023 and three per cent in mid-2025.”

The latest move was widely condemned and with changes to the RBA’s operations proposed, Dr Lowe seems unlikely to be reappointed when his term as Governor ends in September.

Dr Lowe, who conceded rate rises were causing economic damage with unemployment tipped to climb from 3.5 per cent to 4.5 per cent, said the path to a soft landing was a narrow one with more increases possible.

Deloitte Access Economics head Dr Pradeep Philip said: “The rate increase shows that the Reserve Bank is still playing recession roulette, despite briefly and sensibly walking away from the table when it paused rate hikes last month.”

Real Estate Institute of Australia president Hayden Groves said the RBA could have waited until its June meeting when more data would be available to assess the impact of rate rises.
