I love the fact that I’m in some small way helping people achieve a major goal in life, whether it’s being able to sell their current home and moving on to their forever home or getting a foot on the first rung of the property ladder. Why should people choose you over other agents? I care for my vendors exactly the same way I would care for
a member of my own family if they were selling a property by giving them the very best advice I could in relation to all aspects of the sale. I firmly believe in being totally honest with my clients and would expect honest feedback from an agent who was selling my own property in regards to what buyers actually thought after an inspection, and not what the agent thought that I should hear. What has been your biggest ever sale? I sold an entire complex of four townhouses in Penrith, but whether the sale is for $1,000,000+ or a few hundred thousand dollars it doesn’t matter as long as I get a great result for my vendor.

Fried, baked, mashed, boiled or steamed – potatoes may be the world’s most popular vegetable, and without a doubt the best tasting ones are those you have grown yourself. The season to plant Seed Potatoes is upon us, so get set, ready and grow! Planting them now will reward you with a fresh harvest in spring and throughout summer months. Don’t worry about frosts either, as freezing nights would have passed by the time the growth comes through the soil. You don’t even need a large garden as potatoes can be grown in large tubs or grow bags on the patio or balcony. Here a few tips for growing potatoes:
• Always use Certified Seed Potatoes as they are grown in controlled field conditions to ensure they are disease free, true to type, vigorous in growth and greater in yield. • If your seed potatoes are not growing shoots when you buy them, leave them in a dry and well-lit position (but out of direct sunlight) for a few weeks. • When the tubers are shooting
new growth, cut them in quarters, making sure each section has shoots on it. • Potatoes grow in a wide range of soils, the ideal being sandy with a high humus content. They require nitrogen so add manure and garden compost to the soil before planting. • New shoots require mounding or thick mulching to encourage formation of the new tubers, and to ensure they are not exposed to the sun. DURING WINTER Whilst our winters are considered mild compared to other parts of the world, many Australians still choose to ride out the cool weather indoors, limiting relaxation and entertaining activities to the indoors for three months of the year. Adbri’s Great Australian Backyard Survey 2019 shows Aussies primarily use their backyards for entertaining (44 per cent), and relaxing (33 per cent) and with 67 per cent of people planning a backyard update in 2019, investing in your outdoor area is a project that need not wait for summer. With property such a valuable asset and the backyard being the “hero” of the family home, it is a wasted resource to ignore the backyard according to landscape expert and Adbri Masonry Brand Ambassador Jason Hodges. Don’t walk mud through the house! A major deterrent to outdoor entertaining in winter is damp, muddy areas that lead to guests walking dirt through your house. “To make the most of your outdoor space during winter the important thing before you even think about heating, is laying a solid foundation,” Hodges said. You need to consider a solid base that creates a seamless transition between the indoor and outdoor rooms. A concrete paver is always a great choice for alfresco areas and paths because they are built to last outdoors and are low maintenance. Another serial offender each winter is the side of the house. In most homes, there’s one side that receives little sun and it can become a real mud pit. Light it up As it gets darker earlier and we are settled into shorter winter days, a well-lit garden is essential if you want to continue entertaining into the night. The product options in outdoor lighting have come so far, we really are spoilt for choice and can pick from different styles to create different looks for our entertaining. “For smaller, intimate entertaining you could look at fairy lights through the garden and around vertical poles. For more formal entertaining, consider festoon lighting which will completely transform the look and feel of your area,” Hodges said. “Whatever you decide, do not underestimate the value in stronger, practical lighting around
the outdoor dining table, as no one likes eating in the dark!” Dress it up Selecting the right furniture is imperative to achieving the desired look and feel and maximising the time spent in the backyard. While we want to be outdoors, we do need to remember it is winter and we can have fun embracing this. If you have a garden retaining wall, you can buy cushions for the top to ward off the winter chill, creating informal seating and some colour in the garden. Throw in some blankets to help with the cold weather. Think about your choices for furniture and start by considering how you anticipate the outdoor room will be used. Lounges and deep seaters are perfect for those who like to relax whereas dining settings are best for those who love long family meals.
Now turn up the heat Firepits have become increasingly popular as the must- have centrepiece for any backyard. Not only does the firepit create a wonderful atmosphere but it also provides warmth as well as a great cooking source, perfect for entertaining guests. “A firepit is nature’s TV, they bring a natural and enjoyable feature to your outdoor area. As soon as you build a fire pit, it will automatically become the focal point and main gathering spot for socialising and entertaining,” Hodges said. While there’s many great “off the shelf” fire pits available, a waste free alternative is to build a concrete block firepit. It is easy to do yourself at home in just a few steps. The best part, while you can down stack the blocks to clear the area, you can keep the pit there and repurpose it during spring and summer as a veggie patch! Home & Garden Magazine
