Australian mortgage holders are gradually being encircled by the interest rate rise wagons as the once dormant inflation dragon stirs up again after a long sleep. Central banks around the world have been raising their interest rates in response to cost-of-living increases caused by the economic impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand last week delivered its largest interest rate increase in 22 years – by half a percentage point to 1.5 per cent – in efforts to control the economy’s highest inflation in more than three decades, set to peak at seven per cent this year. Inflation in the United Kingdom hit a 30-year high after climbing
more than expected in March. The UK’s consumer prices index jumped seven per cent over one year, beating expectations of a 6.7 per cent rise. US consumer prices increased 8.5 per cent in March from a year earlier, the largest gain since 1981. Official interest rates in Australia have been sitting at a record low of 0.1 per cent since November 2020. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) says it wants to see wages rise at a much faster pace before it lifts rates for the first time in more than a decade. However, many economists are betting the RBA will have no choice but to start its rate-hiking cycle in June, shortly after the Federal Election, or maybe even
