WHAT A TRANSFORMATION! BLOCK WINNERS SHOW OFF THEIR NEW HOME Former ‘The Block’ winners, Hayden and Sara Vale, have recently completed their latest project – transforming an old South Coast house into a luxury home with a marriage of urban and coastal influences. Southhouse is located just a stone’s throw away from the beach in New South Wales’ Stanwell Park, a place in which the couple drew inspiration from the natural surrounding landscape to create a modern home that would suit their small family. Being no strangers to DIY, the couple focused on demolishing the old house in stages and establishing strong foundations for their renovations. The aim was to create a forever home that was built to last, making the decision to use high-quality building materials imperative. Over a year later, and after renovating through a pandemic, their hard work has resulted in a stunning family home. “We were moving to such a stunning part of the world and we wanted to bring influences of that landscape inside as well as join elements of it on the outside.
Our home features an urban chic aesthetic with neutral palettes throughout, providing the perfect backdrop for bold accents of colour, texture and coastal influences,” Ms Vale said. Urban design elements, such as polished concrete flooring, have been incorporated throughout the house, creating an industrial ambiance, balanced with the inclusion of natural detailing, to bring a sense of warmth and softness to the space. Building materials with acoustic properties such as Gyprock Superchek plasterboard harmoniously integrate within the home, blending the urban and coastal elements. “Because ultimately the home has more of an urban feel, we worked hard to make sure the coastal elements, be it hard or soft furnishings, would warm the home up,” Ms Vale said. “On the top floor we have timber flooring paired with a very modern kitchen that also supports a New York marble island bench and splashback. On the lower floors, we have concrete flooring, so we’ve weaved timber in where we could, such as our staircases,
bedhead and in bathroom vanities. We’ve used colours reflecting the landscape, for example our kitchen is dark blue like the ocean and our accessories are neutral tones.” While the living room is a hero room in the house, Ms Vale loved

With official interest rates set to rise, petrol prices already soaring and electricity likely to follow suit, consumers may be tempted to try and offset any cost of living challenges by paying more bills with the credit card. Australians put $25.7 billion worth of transactions on their credit cards last November – the highest value since records began in 2002. Reserve Bank of Australia figures have also shown a rise in the number of credit cards on issue in December – the first jump in two-and-a-half years. As we see fuel prices approaching and sometimes exceeding $2 per litre, it is understandable that filling up the car with petrol is one of the biggest weekly purchases
that could result in consumers putting the squeeze on their credit cards to get by. Many people run into trouble managing their credit card debt. At Bell Partners we have even assisted someone who racked up a six figure credit card debt! Fortunately, we were able to have this debt consolidated into a home loan and the card was paid out when the home was sold. There are various strategies for managing credit card debt. I see a few people do balance transfers onto low or zero rate introductory deals, though it is worth noting many of these charge a balance transfer fee. It can be a good solution if you are disciplined with paying off during the low/no
interest period, but you need to be careful not to run the card back up to the limit again. Managed well, a credit card which is cleared before any interest is incurred can be a convenient way to manage the monthly budget. But this takes discipline as the debt can easily get out of hand. It is important to know the last two years of credit card monthly repayments are now reported on credit files – so attack credit card debt early before any late or missed payments. If you need help to reduce your credit card debt, do not hesitate to seek the advice of an experienced finance broker. See you next week!
