ARE WE TURNING TO CREDIT CARDS IN TOUGH TIMES?
Unfortunately, in this period of cost-of-living pressures and higher interest rates for borrowers, some people are still turning to credit cards, particularly when they need money for an emergency.
Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) data has shown total credit card debt nationwide rose for the fifth month in a row in February. Analysis from comparison site RateCity said people could be “cracking under pressure” and “turning to plastic to make ends meet”.
The total credit card bill attracting interest charges increased by $270 million to $17.75 billion on Australia’s personal credit cards, RateCity said, which was the highest level since August, 2021.

Sally Tindall said: “While the credit card can be a bridge to get through to the next pay day, it’s a band-aid solution that can quickly come unstuck.”
I’m not completely anti-credit card. With discipline, including only using it for purchases and
not cash advances, and paying off the balance in full during the interest free period, there can be great benefits through rewards and points programs.
If you have overspent on a credit card, there is the option to reduce the debt into a home loan or personal loan at a lower rate, and also a loan that will be repaid over time.
But I still see people consolidate as much as $150,000 of credit card debt, only to come back 12 months later with the same level of credit card debt because they have kept the cards. The critical thing is to cut up and cancel the card!
Also beware of zero or low interest credit card debt transfers to a new credit card. They often come with some cost, and it is essential to pay off the debt over the zero interest period.
But the main thing is to wean yourself off credit cards if possible, particularly cards with a high limit. Holding a lot of credit card debt can also impact on your chances of obtaining home finance in the future.
