Whilst the temperature outside continues to fall, the good news is that we have officially passed the shortest day of the year – so from now on the days will start getting longer and lighter. The cold shouldn’t keep us from getting in the garden either, as we are actually getting into one of the most exciting planting seasons! Now is the time to start planting summer flowering bulbs such as Bearded Iris, Gladiolis and Asiatic Lilies. Our new varieties this year include Daylily, Storm Lily, Lilium Cogoleto and Lilium Apricot Fudge – as well as Gladioli Glamour Mix that has stunning bicoloured blooms and shorter stems, making them ideal for pots and containers.
Winter is also the perfect time for planting produce ‘bulbs’ such as Artichoke, Asparagus, Rhubarb, Seed Potatoes and Strawberries, as well as bare rooted berry canes like Blackberry, Boysenberry, Raspberry and many more! You can find these at your local garden retailer or our website from now until early spring.
The best thing about growing bulbs is that they truly are ‘set and forget’. As the bulb provides food for the growing plant you really don’t need to do anything but ensure you plant them in welldraining soil and just watch them grow! If you want to get some quick results whilst waiting for the bulbs to grow, sow a scattering of quick growing seeds on the surface of where you planted the bulbs. Flowers such as Alyssum and Viola combine well with Lilies and Gladiolis, are quick to grow from seed and flower within a few weeks. In the veggie patch you can sow a row of radishes or leafy greens that are ready for harvest in as little as four weeks.
