FOR MOVING DAY Moving house often tops the list as one of life’s most stressful experiences, and Aussies are on the move more than ever before. The Australian Bureau of Statistics states that 90 per cent of young households have moved at least once in the last five years, with 40 per cent having moved three or more times. Kelso Merchandise Manager, James Lomax, said moving can also be an expensive exercise. “Aussies spend $863 million each year on moving – with the average cost around $1600 per move, frequent relocations are likely to break the bank,” he said. “Apart from a rental bond, the next biggest expenses are fitting out a new pad with furniture, followed by removal companies and utility connection fees. “However, with the right equipment you can significantly decrease the cost of moving by doing some of it yourself, and with some careful planning.” Here are his top tips for the DIY mover: 1. Create a list and tick it off Create a detailed checklist and

timeline that covers each stage of the moving process at least four to six weeks prior to moving day. Then give yourself a day to get all this important stuff done. 2. Get the right equipment You can cut down costs by purchasing packing items directly from a supplier, such as bubble wrap, cardboard boxes, tape and marker pens. 3. Prepare your current home Start to prepare your current home at least four weeks prior to moving day by getting rid of things you don’t need, as this can also help you make money. 4. Packing Gather all of your packing supplies and start in a room that you use less often and keep track of things you might need to access before you move. 5. Moving day It’s best to start early on moving day to get the most out of the daylight hours. Load the truck with large items first and then boxes. From Phil’s Desk . . . A lot has crossed my desk in recent times. CAPAH (Citizens Action group for Penrith Affordable Housing) meet regularly to move this and other projects forward. We are aiming to increase affordable rental accommodation that will enable people in community based employment such as ambos, nurses, teachers, firefighters, police etc . . . to rent accommodation below market rent to enable these tenants to save a bigger deposit for when they build a home.
