RATES ON THE RISE? NEW ZEALAND A KEY INDICATOR

While Australia’s central bank insists official interest rates won’t be moving up next year and could stay on hold until at least 2024, their counterparts across the Tasman have already lifted rates and could hike another seven times over the next two years. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) last week became the first central bank among developed nations to increase the cash rate twice during 2021 in response to runaway inflation and an overheating economy fuelled by booming property prices. The RBNZ moved the rate from 0.5% to 0.75%, already much higher than the Reserve Bank of Australia’s official rate of 0.1%. Although we have intense sport-
ing rivalries with our friends and neighbours across ‘The Ditch’, Australian mortgage holders don’t want to see the RBA try to outdo the New Zealanders with interest rate increases. Economic conditions in New Zealand are also more extreme at the moment than Australia. The RBNZ has forecast inflation to run above 5.0% for the next three quarters, peaking at 5.7% in March 2022, because of higher oil prices, rising transport costs and the impact of supply shortfalls. Housing is also a component of NZ’s inflation problem. RBA Governor Dr Philip Lowe doesn’t yet see the same issues in Australia, where underlying inflation was 2.1% in the September
quarter, 2021, and well within the central bank’s target range of between 2-3%. Despite repeated comments from Dr Lowe, bond investors are still banking on the RBA to follow New Zealand and another nation which has tightened rates, South Korea, sooner than expected. They are betting the RBA will raise rates as soon as May next year, way ahead of the Governor’s guidance for 2024. Governor Lowe last month opened the door slightly on future rate rises by saying economic conditions to warrant a lift in the RBA’s cash rate could be “appropriate in 2023”. No change is expected when the RBA board meets next week.
