NEW HOTEL ON THE WAY PANTHERS PARTNERSHIP TO

The Panthers Group has signed an agreement with Accor for a new five-star Pullman hotel at the Penrith Panthers precinct in western Sydney.

Opening in the fourth quarter of 2023, the landmark precinct will consist of an upscale 153-room Pullman Sydney Penrith hotel, a 1,000-person conference centre and a community centre. The project will transform the area and create a new state-of-the-art business and entertainment destination for the local commu nity and visitors alike.

The hotel is adjoined to and will service the new 1,250 sqm West ern Sydney Conference Centre (WSCC), which will complement the Group’s current meetings and events business and host industry tradeshows, exhibitions and other major events.

Panthers Group Chief Executive Officer, Brian Fletcher, said: “Pullman Sydney Penrith will be an elevated addition to western Sydney’s tourism offering and builds upon the existing and upcoming new amenities within the Panthers precinct and the wider Penrith locale. It is part

of our ongoing commitment to deliver world-class facilities to the local community. This development will further enhance Penrith’s reputation as a world-class event and tourism destination.”

The City of Penrith is on the precipice of a significant tourism boom, with additional major infrastructure works underway to further enhance the destination, including the upcoming Western Sydney International Airport just a 30-minute drive away (set to open in 2026).

BANK CLOSURES BRANCHES BECOMING EXTINCT

Take a good look the next time you step into a bank as they are fast becoming an endangered species around Australia.

Banks are continuing to close local branches across Australia at an alarming rate, with more than 1,600 branches shuttered since 2017 as financial institutions increasingly lean on their online systems, which have also had greater uptake from consumers.

According to the NCA Newswire, remote Australia has seen its bank branches decrease by almost a third, with only 102 branches left in those areas.

ATMs are also vanishing at an alarming pace, with less than half the number of cash machines in Australian cities and towns as

there was six years ago. There are currently 6,412 ATMs in Australia.

In 2017, there were 13,814.

In many regional areas, bank branches have been an integral part of the community and elderly Australians are the most affected by the trend towards automation over the personal touch.

The Financial Services Union has been angered by the latest bank closures, including 24 recently by Westpac.FSU National Secretary Julia Angrisano said: “This is the most appalling deci mation of a branch network by a bank which is now on the verge of abandoning its social contract with the community. We need the Federal Government to step in and stop the banks from deserting

regional Australia. Banks can’t be trusted to do the right thing by regional communities because when considering whether to close branches, they only consider their massive profits and the bonuses of senior executives.”

The finance broking sector has benefited from banks turning their backs on personal service. Brokers now account for almost 70 per cent of all new residential home loans.
