‘THE BLOCK’ IS BACK!

TV’S MOST POPULAR PROPERTY SHOW RETURNS ‘The Block’, one of 2021’s most watched reality TV shows, this year swaps the city for the countryside and on a scale never attempted before anywhere in the world. Coming of age for its 18th season, ‘The Block: Tree Change’ heads to Gisborne South in Victoria’s beautiful Macedon Ranges, where five city slicker couples will each build a 500-square metre house, tennis courts and even a winery on 10 acres of prime Aussie heartland. For the first time in ‘Block’ history, not only will the contestants build a homestead, they'll also plan and think about landscaping more than 700 square metres of land, from the minute they arrive on set. Handpicked from across the country, ‘The Block: Tree Change’ has a stellar lineup of fresh-faced Blockheads, most of whom are incredibly eager to tackle this year’s challenge. But the mammoth construction effort ahead proves too much for some, with one couple dropping their tools and leaving the show three days into filming, which will rock ‘The Block’ to its core.

The five couples who start the journey on day one are: football player Joel Patfull (37) and influencer Elle Ferguson (38), based in Bondi; Tom Calleja (34) and social worker Sarah-Jane Wilson (30) from Melbourne; actress and lawyer Sharon Johal (34) and accountant Ankur Dogra (41), also from Melbourne; tradies Dylan Adams (29) and Jenny Heath (25) from the Gold Coast; and former professional rugby player Omar Slaimankhel (30) and building maintenance man Osman (Oz) Said (30) from western Sydney. In his 16th series of hosting ‘The Block’, Scott Cam will for the first time build his own house to inspire the couples and to create a space for them to come together. Scott will work with previous contestants Duncan Miller and Spence Thomson, and Sarah Armstrong from The Block Shop, to help make his dream a reality. Scott said that ‘Tree Change’ is a monumental challenge like no other. “When I arrived on site for the first time, I thought to myself we had done a lot of big Blocks in the past but nothing like this – it’s

RATES RISE YET AGAIN RBA STRIKES: RATES NOW SIT AT 1.85 PER CENT The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has delivered another hit to home owners by increasing the official cash rate by 0.5 per cent.

RBA Governor Philip Lowe said the latest increase was required to help tackle growing inflation, which is at its highest level in Australia since the early 1990s. “Today’s increase in interest rates is a further step in the normalisation of monetary conditions in Australia,” he said on Tuesday. “The increase in interest rates over recent months has been required to bring inflation back to target and to create a more sustainable balance of demand and supply in the Australian economy. “The Board expects to take

further steps in the process of normalising monetary conditions over the months ahead, but it is not on a pre-set path. “The size and timing of future interest rate increases will be guided by the incoming data and the Board’s assessment of the outlook for inflation and the labour market. The Board is committed to doing what is necessary to ensure that inflation in Australia returns to target over time.” Graham Cooke, head of consumer research at Finder, said the combined cash rate hikes of recent months will cost the aver-

age Aussie homeowner an additional $610 per month compared to what they were paying in April. “Rising interest rates, soaring inflation, energy prices and the general cost of living are already squeezing household budgets,” he said. “This latest hike could cost the average mortgage holder a whopping $7,300 extra per year compared to what they were paying in April. “With almost a quarter of Australian homeowners already struggling to pay their mortgage in July, this news will be especially painful.”
