A record number of Australian homeowners are struggling to pay their mortgage, according to new research by Finder, Australia’s most visited comparison site.
A staggering 40 per cent of Aussie mortgage holders – equivalent to 1.32 million
households – admit they struggled to pay their home loan in May.
This is the highest proportion recorded since Finder began tracking the question in 2019.
The percentage of those struggling to pay is up from 24 per cent –or 792,000 households – 12 months ago in May 2022.
Graham Cooke, head of consumer research at Finder, said panic was starting to set in.
“Many are facing the frightening prospect of defaulting on their loans and potentially losing their homes,” he said.
“If you haven’t already, try to negotiate a lower rate with your lender. If you
don’t get it, it might be time to refinance somewhere else.”
Finder’s data shows mortgage stress is most prevalent among women, with a worrying 47 per cent of women struggling to pay their home loan in May, compared to 32 per cent of men.
Millennial homeowners are hardest hit – a sizable 49 per cent admit they are having trouble paying their mortgage repayments, compared to 33 per cent of Gen X.
Finder has released its new free Mortgage Stress Calculator to help Aussies take control of their financial situation by understanding the amount of wiggle room in their home loan.
The Mortgage Stress Calculator is unique in that it not only shows users where a homeowner stands financially, but also how much of an interest rate rise they can cope with in the future.
Cooke said the free tool will help Aussies get an individual understanding of their financial situation by taking into account a range of factors.
“We believe this tool will be a valuable resource for anyone looking to manage their home loan and take control of their financial future,” he said.

PRESSURE ON RBA TO KEEP PUSHING RATES HIGHER
Higher than anticipated inflation is putting more pressure on the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to continue punishing borrowers with interest rate increases.
Inflation jumped from 6.3 per cent to 6.8 per cent in April due to rising rents and higher transport costs following the end to the temporary cut in fuel excise. In response, the RBA at its June meeting lifted the cash rate 25 basis points to 4.10 per cent.
The decision by the Fair Work Commission (FWC) to award millions of Australia’s lower paid workers a pay rise is also expected to add to the inflationary pressures going forward.
In its annual wage review for the estimated 184,000 workers who receive the national minimum wage as well as those on award rates of pay, the FWC lifted wages by 5.75 per cent, with most changes due to come into effect in the first full pay period on or after July 1. While inflation has stayed below the 8.4 per cent peak reached last December, the RBA is increasingly concerned price pressures could prove persistent as wages growth accelerates.
Citi Australia Chief Economist Josh Williamson said the monthly price movements were higher than expected and silenced any concern the RBA has over-stepped the mark with
its relentless rate rises since May last year.
“We now see upside risks to our June quarter inflation forecast of 1.3 per cent given that services inflation across the remaining months will likely be sticky too,” he said.
RBA Governor Dr Philip Lowe (pictured above) told senators in Canberra it would be difficult to engineer a return to the central bank’s two to three per cent inflation target if unit labour costs – the difference between wages growth and productivity growth – kept growing at rates of 3.5 per cent to four per cent. Dr Lowe has warned if labour productivity growth does not increase, then current levels of wages growth and large minimum wage rises are inconsistent with low inflation.
Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers is yet to announce whether Dr Lowe’s term as RBA Governor will be extended beyond September, saying he will decide by around the middle of the year. Odds favour him being replaced.
