Enjoy it while it lasts. As predicted last month by Broking Breakdown, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) provided borrowers with a welcome reprieve from its interest rate rises in the lead up to Easter.
The RBA board pressed the pause button this month on the most aggressive tightening
of monetary policy since the 1980s to allow more time to assess the impact on the economy and consumers of 10 successive rate rises since May last year, when the official rate had been a pandemic induced record low of 0.1 per cent.
But RBA Governor Dr Philip Lowe has stressed the decision to leave the cash rate on hold at 3.6 per cent “does not imply that interest rate increases are over”.
Economists for the big four banks believe there is at least one more rate rise to come, although financial markets are tipping the central bank may keep the cash rate on hold again in May.
Borrowers can at least be more confident that the RBA is getting closer to the end of its current cycle of increasing the official interest rate.
Recent data pointing to the inflation rate retreating from its three-decade high of 7.8
per cent in the December 2022 quarter (it slowed to 6.8 per cent in February) gave the RBA cause to pause from the rate hikes started 11 months ago.
The RBA will be further guided by upcoming economic data, particularly the March quarterly inflation figures to be released on April 26.
The central bank still wants to pull back inflation to its target range of two to three per cent.
But Dr Lowe said the board was willing to have inflation drop at a slower pace to counter high unemployment.
“Our judgment at the moment is that if we can get inflation back (to) three per cent by mid-2025, and preserve many of those job gains that have been delivered in the last few years, that’s a better outcome than getting inflation back to three per cent one year earlier and having more job losses,” he said.
