Spring is officially just a week away and there are literally hundreds of plant varieties you could get growing in your garden now! This week we will focus on Dahlias as the new season of Dahlia tubers have just arrived into garden retailers nationwide. Planting them now will reward you with a continuous flush of blooms from Christmas through autumn and all the way to first winter frosts! Plant your Dahlias in full sun in a position that is protected from wind. They will tolerate morning or afternoon shade but they need plenty of sunlight. Prepare the soil by adding organic matter and compost. Plant the tubers in a moist well drained soil, but don’t

water them until the shoots are approximately 15 centimetres tall – unless the soil gets very dry. This will avoid the tubers from rotting while the plant establishes itself. Provide a stake before planting and tie the plant as it grows.

Remove any spent flowers regularly to encourage new blooms to develop. Dahlias also make excellent cut flowers and last in a vase for about a week.

Water regularly and mulch well to keep the roots cool during summer heat. At the end of the flowering season you can leave the Dahlias in the ground if your soil is well drained. In that case you just need to lift the tubers in September-October, divide large clumps and replant them. But if your soil gets wet in the winter- time, the tubers are best lifted and stored in a cool, dry area until spring. I know you’ve all probably seen me stomping my feet and waving my arms around when I talk about this subject, but something happened this week that I thought was important to talk about again! And that is the importance of getting and comparing at least three quotes AND also educating yourself on any work you’re having done around your home. I was speaking to a roofer friend of mine and he told me about a client of his that had a leaking roof. She contacted a couple of different roofers and was told by both that she absolutely needed to replace her roof. She was given two quotes, both in the vicinity of $100,000.

Well, my mate looked at the roof and discovered that it didn’t actually need replacing. The tiles were fine and just needed a bit of TLC. He repaired her roof for $7000! My point here is that the first two presented no other option but to replace the roof. It was when she got the third quote that she actually realised there was another choice! When you call in a tradie, make sure you discuss with them ALL the options available, like replace versus repair. One more point I’d like to stress is that by inspecting and maintaining your roof on a regular basis you can save thousands towards the cost of a new one and almost double the life of your existing roof!
