KEEPING IT LOW ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN FOCUS The energy efficiency of new homes is set to improve with the nation’s building ministers agreeing to strengthen provisions in the National Construction Code (NCC) for residential buildings. The commitment, made at last month’s Building Ministers Forum (BMF) in Sydney, has been warmly welcomed by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA). CEO Davina Rooney said the GBCA had advocated strongly for the changes alongside other industry leaders and that governments should be congratulated for taking this important step forward. “This is a major milestone in our journey towards a low emissions future and one that recognises the tremendous opportunities in the built environment,” Ms Rooney said. “Greater energy efficiency in our residential buildings will mean healthier, more comfortable homes as well as reduced energy costs for households.” The update of the residential energy provisions will be informed by the COAG Energy
Council’s national plan that sets a trajectory towards zero energy (and carbon) ready buildings for Australia. This trajectory aligns closely with research - based recommendations from ASBEC, in partnership with ClimateWorks, and includes the implementation of cost - effective increases to energy performance standards.
“ASBEC’s work highlighted how urgently we need this update of energy requirements in the residential sector, as well as the potential benefits of making costeffective improvements to building efficiency,” Ms Rooney said.
“We are proud to be a member of ASBEC’s Building Code Taskgroup and welcome the certainty the BMF’s decision will bring to the construction industry.” Ms Rooney said the GBCA was continuing to champion the transformation of the residential sector through its work on homes. “As the source of more than 57 per cent of built environment emissions in Australia, it is crucial that we leverage the residential sector’s potential to help reach our

STAYING WATER WISE WORKING WITH WATER RESTRICTIONS As drought conditions continue across many parts of Australia and Sydneysiders enter their third month under Level 1 water restrictions, many property owners are contemplating water-wise options for outdoor spaces. “Whether it’s in the garden, pool or areas in between, there are plenty of ways to create beautiful and practical outdoor spaces – that are also low on maintenance and water requirements,” said expert Landscape Designer Matt Leacy, from Landart Landscapes. “It’s all about knowing what your options are and making smart choices. Water restrictions don’t necessarily have to mean sacrificing outdoor style, aesthetic and use.” Water-wise plantings and lawns “In drought or very dry periods, it’s best to have plants that are hardy and can cope in sunny conditions with minimal water,” Matt said. “At the same time, you ideally want to select drought-resistant plants that are consistent with your intended garden style and aesthetic – and the soil you’re working with. “For the best type of water-wise lawn, you can’t go past soft leaf
Buffalo Grass, like Sapphire or Sir Walter. These cope better with less water compared to other types of grasses. They will brown if they go a long time without water, but they also bounce back pretty quick after rainfall. Make sure you fertilise Buffalo Grass, as well as aerate and irrigate it properly. “In terms of watering Buffalo Grass, you’re going to need to water in accordance with any restrictions that may exist in your state or territory. For example, in Sydney and other parts of New South Wales, you’re only allowed to water lawns or gardens with a
hand-held hose before 10am and after 4pm – and the hose must be fixed with a trigger nozzle or another attachment that allows instant on-off use.” Pool and spa covers “While you can still, in every state or territory, top up an existing pool or spa to replace water lost through evaporation, you can go do your little bit extra by using a pool and/or spa cover,” said Matt. “A pool and/or spa cover will help to significantly reduce water evaporation, as well as insulating the pool and/or spa to naturally retain its temperature over the cooler months.” Drip irrigation systems “Drip irrigation systems remain one of the most efficient ways to get water into the garden, and they are permitted for use in all state and territories,” said Matt. “There are many types of drip irrigation systems on the market, which can be suited to different property sizes and budgets – the most simple of which are batteryoperated systems. “If you don’t have a lot of time for garden maintenance, I’d recommend an automated drip irrigation system. These can be set with a timer to turn on and

off automatically whenever you want them to. I’d suggest setting the timer to turn the system on early in the morning as this will reduce overall evaporation and give plants a solid kick-start to the day. Under the new water restrictions, all irrigation systems must have a rain gauge or soil moisture sensor.” Mulching “Mulching plays a huge part in boosting the water efficiency of any garden,” said Matt. “Mulch helps to conserve moisture, as well as insulating the soil and reducing weeds – all of which is vital to the overall health and appearance of plants. “As a general rule, it’s best to mulch at least 50- 70mm deep and to keep the mulch away from the stems of trunks or plants. And make sure you to follow the mulch application instructions properly as you can reduce the available water to the soil if you get the mulch and depth wrong. “In terms of mulch varieties, this depends on the soil type and plants used – though generally a decomposed pine bark works well, though it will need topping up more regularly. It ultimately comes down to what your soil needs and what you are trying to achieve.” Home & Garden Magazine

Tomatoes are the most popular choice of home grown produce and with many varieties available there is always something new and delicious to try! You can start your tomato seeds early by sowing them indoors now in Jiffy® Peat Pots or Pellets. A Jiffy® Windowsill Greenhouse will also provide a perfect seed raising environment. Cover the seeds lightly with fine soil and keep the soil moist but not too wet. To aid germination, keep the pots at approx. 15- 20°C. Alternatively tomato seeds can be sown direct into a garden bed as soon as the risk of frost has passed. Transplant the seedlings into the garden when they are large enough to handle. If you have grown your tomatoes in Jiffy®
Peat Pots or Pellets, you can transplant the seedling with pot and all, thus avoiding transplantation shock. Before transplanting young plants, acclimatise them to outside conditions by placing in a
sheltered location for a few hours during the day, gradually increasing the time over a two week period. Then plant into their final growing position at the spacing
indicated on the packet. Mulch the ground around the plants once the soil has fully warmed up. This will help to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Feed the plants every two weeks with organic fertiliser, such as Seaweed solution or manure, and apply a highpotash fertiliser when the flowers start to form fruit. Tall growing varieties will need support, either with canes or string. Side shoots also need pinching out regularly. These appear between a leaf node and the main stem, just below the flower stem. Mr Fothergill’s range of tomato seeds include all key favourites such as Grosse Lisse and Roma, and exciting super sweet and high yielding ones such as Sweet Million F1, Sungold F1 and Cherry Falls.

The most common problem I come across when repairing or painting a home is external rotting timber and paintwork that has failed and it makes me crazy! It’s just so easy to prevent! Make sure you or your tradesmen seal all of the timber exposed to weather. I’m not talking about just the edges you see, but all four sides including the end grains. The only way to do this is to paint each individual piece of timber after it’s cut to size, but before it’s put together. This will prevent moisture from getting in

the timber, causing rot and paintwork to fail. Keep an eye out for signs, usually first seen at the end of a piece of timber, like blistering or splitting paint, shrinking timber or areas you can poke your finger through. It’s not enough to slap on a coat of paint or No More Gaps, that’s just
a quick fix. You’ll have to pull it apart and seal it properly. I know I’ve said it before but preparation is 80 per cent of the job and the most important part. If you want your hard work to pay off and the satisfaction of a job well done, you’ve got to do the hard yards.
