Penrith swelters and there’s more to come corching hot temperatures reaching as high as 44.6 degrees hit Penrith this week, and there’s more hot weather still to come.

Temperatures soared past the 40 degree mark on Tuesday, with very little relief on Tuesday evening before rising again on Wednesday.

The cool change finally arrived on Wednesday afternoon, offering relief to locals who have been desperately seeking air conditioning and swimming pools.

Penrith Panthers cheerleaders Emily McGarrity and Jessica Gilarte cooled down in a backyard pool on Wednesday, desperate to escape western Sydney’s epic heat.

Penrith is in for an average summer weekend before the mercury will again rise next week.

A top temperature of 38 degrees is predicted on Monday, before it’ll hit 43 degrees again next Tuesday.

Locals are being reminded to ensure children and pets are not left in cars at any time, as the consequences can be fatal.

ever has there been a time in the history of the world media where there has been such a disconnection between news writers and news consumers.

Becoming a journalist was once considered a gold-star career choice.

These days it comes with a dark cloud and raised eyebrows.

The trust between a journalist and their reader has, it would seem, never been weaker.

There are obvious exceptions of course – the best example in Australia being the Sydney Morning Herald’s Kate McClymont who is arguably the best in the business in this country.

There was a time when picking up a newspaper in Australia would ensure you were given informed, researched and newsworthy content, decided upon by editors with years of experience. The content was the result of robust news meetings, story pitches and passion.

These days, partly because of the digital revolution and partly because bean counters were given the keys to media companies, it’s a different story.

Over the summer, some of the more bizarre stories that gained ‘headline’ status included PR queen Roxy Jacenko hiring a “look-a-like” nanny, reports that Jessica Marais may be a lesbian and of course, numerous stories about B grade (or even C grade) celebrities wearing bikinis.

Last Friday the lead story on the Sydney Morning Herald website was about an off-air battle between two Channel Nine presenters who had a wardrobe clash.

Over at the Daily Telegraph, the story was given similar prominence, but they

were focusing on the fact that David Koch had weighed in to the story.

You would have thought World War III had broken out at the Daily Mail – they had four separate stories on the issue.

Yes, this was a quirky story and had some public interest, but why did it become such a massive event?

Surely no seasoned Editor truly believed that this was the major news story of the day?

Of course not.

You see, despite the fact that the public likes to blame media companies for the sorry state of news, the truth is that the blame is a lot closer to home.

It’s your fault.

It’s our fault.

For a while now, media companies have been measuring what we click and what stories we read online.

They know that a story on a bitchy TV meltdown is going to get more hits than

say, an in depth look at what’s going on in Syria this week.

They know you are more interested in Kim Kardashian than Rex Tillerson (Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State).

If you ran a fruit shop and more people bought apples than bananas, you’d obviously stock more apples.

These days, it’s no different in media – if you click on celebrity trash, media companies will deliver you more celebrity trash.

I can assure you that if we only clicked on serious news stories, all of a sudden the tide would turn.

I recently subscribed to a news service called Inkl. It filters out the trashy stories and clickbait, and delivers only serious news from leading organisations and journalists around the world.

There is not a bikini in sight.

Time will tell if it’s a successful model, because the truth is, what people say they want to read and what their actions prove they actually want to read are very different.

People will continue to criticise the media to their friends, saying it’s all sensationalised crap.

They’ll continue to comment on social media with typical responses to trash stories like “is this news” and “how about you deliver some real news”.

And yet, the media – more than ever – is delivering the content that people want to read.

What a double-edged sword this once respected industry has become.

Just remember, you have the power.

What you click determines the very path media companies go down.

Nepean hits back at diversion claims • Hospital claims patients weren’t turned away • Opposition says Nepean is clearly at “breaking point” JADE ALIPRANDI

epean Hospital has denied claims patients were turned away from its Emergency Department on Monday morning after it reached capacity.

Paramedics reported that Nepean Hospital had been taken off the ‘NSW Patient Allocation Matrix’, meaning that emergency cases rushed in by ambulance were diverted to other hospitals from 3.30am to 5.30am.

Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Chief Executive, Kay Hyman said this was not the case.

“Let me make this clear – not a single patient was diverted away from Nepean Hospital, not a single ambulance,” she said in a statement released on Tuesday.

“At no stage was Nepean Hospital on what is being referred to as a ‘bypass’ or ‘off the matrix’.”

Radio 2GB reported on Monday afternoon that a patient was taken to Nepean Hospital suffering a suspected heart attack, but was asked to go to Westmead instead – a 30 minute trip.

“The Emergency Department eventually accepted the patient but only after the paramedics pleaded that the patient was

in life threatening circumstances,” 2GB’s Mark Levy said.

Gerard Hayes, Health Services Union Secretary, told 2GB it was a huge concern.

“This is clearly just under-staffing and under-resourcing of the public health system,” he said.

“It’s an unacceptable situation.”

Ms Hyman said seriously or critically unwell patients are always seen first.

“At Nepean Hospital, one patient arriving by ambulance was in a critical condition [that morning],” she said.

“Not only did that patient receive incredible care from the paramedics who attended to him, he arrived without delay and was triaged and under the care of doctors immediately.”

She did not specify if it was the same patient that was spoken about on 2GB. Londonderry MP Prue Car said she remains deeply concerned.

“Nepean Hospital is once again at breaking point. It is the State’s most overstretched and under pressure hospital,” she said.

“The community deserves to know that if they call an ambulance in the Nepean area they will be taken to the nearest hospital and not diverted to Blacktown or Westmead hospitals.”

local matter and that she would not be commenting further on the issue.

State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres said Labor had no credibility when it came to Nepean Hospital.

“Only the Liberals will invest $576 million to build the local hospital we need now and into the future,” he said.

olice Rescue officer Gary Raymond admits it wasn’t until the dust had settled on the Granville Train Disaster that it sunk in just what a huge event it was.

“We didn’t have time to look at the enormity of it at that moment, you looked at it as a rescue rather than a sad, tragic event,” he said this week, reflecting on the tragedy on its 40th anniversary.

“But later on... when the job finished you’d reflect on the enormous sadness.”

83 people died and over 210 were injured in the disaster as the train struck the supporting pillars of an over-bridge at 8.10am on January 18, 1977.

The Sydney-bound eight carriage commuter train had departed Mount Victoria in the Blue Mountains at 6.09am, picking up many passengers in Penrith with commuters expected to arrive in Sydney city at 8.32am.

As the train entered a left hand curve approaching Granville station, the train derailed.

The first and second carriages separated from the train, and hit the supports of the overhead Bold Street bridge.

Within seconds, the bridge collapsed onto the third and fourth carriages.

The scene of the tragedy in 1977 released 10 hours after the accident, but it was not until 3.20pm the following day that the last body was removed.

Mr Raymond can still remember arriving at the scene.

“The Police Sergeant told me to get underneath the bridge and crushed carriages and ‘tell me what I’ve got’,” he reflected.

“10 people were alive but trapped... what we call ‘crushed syndrome’.

“We had to get in there and triage the injured people, and work out what equipment we would need.”

Mr Raymond attended Wednesday’s remembrance ceremony.

Remembering Granville

“Every day of my life it’s there” Rossco remembers his beloved sister 40 years after the train disaster that took her life EMILY NEWTON

enrith’s Ross Hutchison is known as being a lovable larrikin with a big smile and an even bigger heart.

He rarely speaks of the enormous tragedy that rocked his family 40 years ago, but on Wednesday he stood with so many others to remember his sister Cheryl, who was killed in the Granville Train Disaster.

Cheryl was just 21-years-old when she, along with 83 others, lost their lives in the tragedy on January 18, 1977.

“My sister was a very special girl... she was tremendous with the kids” Mr Hutchison said.

“She was beautiful... the apple of mum and dads’ eye.”

The small amount of money his family received as Government compensation following the tragedy went to building a children’s playground at Westmead Hospital to honour his sister’s memory.

Mr Hutchison is pleased that the State Government is set to formally apologise for the disaster.

“The fact that the Government is finally saying ‘yep we blew it’, it is about time,” he said.

“Every day of my life it’s there, it would

be a lot like that for many other people. It still lives with us.”

Mr Hutchison will never forget that devastating day and receiving the news that his sister had passed away.

“I had to identify my sister after she had been under 300 tonnes of concrete… it was a tough call,” he said.

“I relied a lot on the rings that were on her hand to be honest to confirm the fact that it was her.”

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Premier Mike Baird spoke at the commemoration on Wednesday and offered their condolences to the families of the victims.

“We put our arms around you in love and solidarity, but we know we will never truly understand the burden you bare and the pain you endure,” Mr Turnbull said.

Lindsay MP Emma Husar also has a personal connection to the tragedy.

“This memorial is particularly moving to my family because my mum, who was pregnant with my sister at the time, was aboard the train when it derailed,” she said.

“She survived, but that awful day has lived with her for the rest of her life.”

This year for the first time the service acknowledged 84 victims, counting the death of a pregnant victim’s unborn child.

More units on the way The days of the traditional suburban family home with a backyard may be phased out sooner than you think with several new high-rise developments recently approved for Penrith.

In the midst of the state’s longest housing construction boom in NSW history, a slew of apartment developments have been approved for the western region.

A total of 135 apartments are set to be built, costing over $42.8 million.

The multi-storey buildings will be built on Somerset Street in Kingswood, on Derby Street in Penrith and on Lethbridge Street in Penrith.

Several development applications have also been received by Penrith Council that include the proposed build of a total of 151 apartments in various streets to the tune of $31.6 million.

This follows news last week that Planning Minister Rob Stokes plans to blast out the red tape holding up housing developments under reforms to help fix the Sydney housing market crisis, before there’s a generation of ‘forgotten people’ who can’t afford to buy a home.

“The NSW Government is determined to do everything it can, including making the planning system more efficient, to ensure housing supply gets to homebuyers fast,” he said.

Mr Stokes said the reforms would assist in delivering the 725,000 new homes forecast to be required by 2036.

Stop the clock A new awareness website by the Australian Medical Association NSW will aim to ‘stop the clock’ on child abuse, with Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Pru Goward welcoming the campaign to better recognise the warning signs.

In launching the ‘Stop The Clock’ website the Australian Medical Association has revealed that every 15 minutes a child in Australia is abused.

“As a society, we need to safeguard children and young people against all forms of abuse: physical, sexual, psychological, as well as neglect,” Ms Goward said.

The website, located at www. stoptheclock.today, is now live and offers extensive support.

Mystery solved

The photo album that was handed in to Stanton and Taylor First National last week has been returned to its rightful owner.

The album contained hundreds of family memories and was handed in by residents from a house in Colless Street, Penrith.

A Steve and a Sandy were mentioned in the albums as well as an Adam.

A search was launched via social media and in The Western Weekender last week.

Staff at Stanton and Taylor managed to track down the owners’ son, Adam, on Facebook.

Sandy collected the album straight away.

Hot weather sparks asthma warning The scorching heat has affected not only our lawns, but our lungs too as Nepean Hospital has seen an increase in admissions of patients suffering from asthma.

Associate Professor Bradley Forssman, Director of Public Health, says that the biggest threat anyone with asthma can have is ignoring the symptoms.

Over the past six weeks at Nepean Hospital, respiratory presentations have

had a small rise from 570 last summer to 582 this summer.

However, the number of asthma presentations has increased by an alarming 50 per cent from 12 months ago, jumping from 42 admissions to 63.

“As soon as people start feeling symptoms, they should go and see a doctor immediately,” he said.

“When there is a poor air quality health alert, people who suffer from asthma are more at risk for suffering from attacks,” Associate Professor Forssman said.

Man charged with stealing property refused bail

A Penrith man allegedly implicated in a large property theft has been refused bail.

Christopher Cruzado appeared before Penrith Local Court via video link from Amber Laurel on Friday charged with larceny.

Police will allege Mr Cruzado, who was on parole at the time of the offence, was one of three who stole more than $15,000 worth of property from a building site.

The prosecution contended there were no conditions that could be crafted that would reliably stop the father-of-two from re-offending.

“Chris! We’ll help you, we love you, OK,” his mother yelled towards the screen after Magistrate Tim Keady handed down his decision.

He is due back in court on January 30.

He is yet to enter a plea.

Man steals $20 worth of items after being released on bail

A man who breached his bail conditions hours after his release has wound up back behind bars.

Daniel Lee Savage faced Penrith Local Court last Friday after he was nabbed shoplifting.

Magistrate Tim Keady acknowledged the value of the property stolen, some 20 odd dollars worth, was less relevant, with his main concern being the defendant’s apparent “inability to maintain a lawful existence”, despite being on three sets of bail.

“He completely lacks the insight, discipline or inclination no matter what is at stake,” he said.

He was refused bail on the fresh matter and had his previous bails revoked.

He is due back in court on April 20.

Woman put police officers and the public at significant risk

A middle-aged woman who allegedly threatened the safety of police officers after developing an obsession has been

refused bail. Maria Bernadette Hannigan sat in the dock of Penrith Local Court last Friday charged with ‘menacing driving’, ‘intimidation’ and ‘damage property’.

Police will allege the accused went on a crime spree over four successive days, which included an incident where she deliberately followed an officer in her car, endangering the police officer and the public as she went.

Magistrate Tim Keady said Ms Hannigan’s escalating behaviour and obsession appears unabated and he held high concern for the safety of officers that were the object of her attention.

He said there were no bail conditions that he could conceive of that would address the risks and refused bail.

Ms Hannigan’s mental health is to be assessed while she is in custody.

The matter was adjourned to March 16.

Man on manslaughter charge shows little interest in court

Gordon Spencer Pittman has been committed for trial to the Supreme Court.

Mr Pittman, who is pleading not guilty to ‘manslaughter’, faced Penrith Local Court last Friday.

During proceedings Mr Pittman let out a big yawn, catching the attention of an unimpressed Magistrate Tim Keady.

“Sorry for keeping you up,” he quipped.

He is due to be arraigned at the Supreme Court on March 3.

Public had to help man found unconscious at green light

A Glenmore Park man found unconscious behind the wheel of a car has been banned from driving for nine months.

Penrith Local Court heard Shepherd Mutopo had just finished drinking at a licensed premises along Mulgoa Road, and was on his way home when he was detected stopped at a green light with the car running.

“Another driver got out to check on you and found you unresponsive,” Magistrate Stephen Corry said.

“It wasn’t a case of not being able to concentrate... you weren’t even conscious! A member of the public had to come along and assist you out of the vehicle.”

Magistrate Corry told Mr Mutopo, who pleaded guilty to ‘mid-range drink driving’, the facts were serious and aggravated by his level of intoxication.

He was convicted, fined $600 and directed to enter a Section 9 good behaviour bond for 12 months.

Man ordered off road after ignoring disqualification

A man who flouted court orders has felt the full force of the law.

Neil Andrew De Asis fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘driving while disqualified’ and ‘using an unregistered motor vehicle’.

The court heard Mr De Asis was subject to a two-year bond for a previous ‘driving while disqualified offence’ and had been cautioned by police for driving just two days prior to the offence.

“I just risked it,” he admitted after expressing his remorse.

Magistrate Stephen Corry said he had plenty of chances to comply and that there was no other alternative than to revoke his bond and bar him from driving.

“This isn’t a cat with nine lives and you use them up,” he said.

“I’ll lose my job,” Mr De Asis said.

“I can’t do anything about that, Sir,” Magistrate Corry said.

“You shouldn’t have been behind a motor vehicle.”

He was convicted, fined $600 and disqualified for more than two years.

Woman told she could lose licence if she keeps using drugs A woman caught driving with cannabis in her blood has been told to choose between the drug and her licence.

Jacinta Chloe Dudley faced Magistrate Tim Keady at Penrith Local Court last week charged with driving with an illicit

substance in her blood. Magistrate Keady told the 28-year-old the drug could stay in her system long after her last puff.

“Every time you do that, you run the risk of coming back to court and losing your licence,” he said.

His Honour took into account her lack of criminal history before placing her on a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Man was drunk and speeding when caught by police

An intoxicated driver intercepted speeding has been stripped of his licence for nine months.

Alexander Wilkie Donaldson faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘mid-range drink driving’.

The court heard the defendant was running late for work and was detected doing 108km/h in an 80km/h zone.

“If I had realised I was that intoxicated, I wouldn’t have drove,” Mr Donaldson told the court.

Magistrate Stephen Corry said an intoxicated person is the worst judge of their fitness to drive.

“Many drunk people will tell you they’re fine when the rest of the world can see they’re not,” he said.

“You were more than double the limit.”

He was convicted and fined $600.

Tradie banned from driving after being caught on M4

A tradie caught drink driving has received little sympathy.

Thomas Anthony Robb faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘mid-range drink driving’.

The court heard Mr Robb came under notice after he was clocked doing 129km/h during peak hour on the M4.

“Have they changed the law? I didn’t think they allowed people on P2 to drink [and drive],” Magistrate Stephen Corry said.

He was convicted, banned from driving for 12 months and fined $600, and given a stinging reprimand

Emu Plains: Man’s actions left road users disturbed

A man has been arrested and charged following calls from the public about a naked male masturbating and filming people’s reactions.

At about 2pm on Saturday, January 14 Police attended the M4 Motorway at Russell Street, Emu Plains where they stopped and spoke to a fully-clothed 56-year-old man driving away from the scene.

His vehicle was searched and a number of items were recovered including a camera that was confiscated by police.

The male was placed under arrest and charged with ‘wilful and obscene exposure’ and ‘commit act of indecency’.

A search warrant was executed for a property in North Richmond where a number of items were seized.

He is set to appear in Penrith Local Court on Monday, February 6.

Glenmore Park: Off-duty cop chases down thieves

At about 1.40pm on Wednesday, January 11 an off-duty police officer was at a post office in Glenmore Park when two males entered and snatched an amount of property off the shelves and ran.

The police officer gave chase, apprehending both males a short distance away where they were then escorted back to the shopping centre.

Penrith Police attended and the stolen property was recovered.

The 15-year-old Erskine Park male was given a youth caution, while the 18-yearold Erskine Park male was given a court attendance notice for a later date.

He was charged with ‘larceny’ and ‘resist police officer in execution of duty’.

Cranebrook: Teen charged after trying to stop arrest

Penrith Police were patrolling Scenic Circuit, Cranebrook when they observed a male and female sitting at a bus stop who both had outstanding warrants.

As police arrested the pair, they were threatened by a 16-year-old Cranebrook male who tried to prevent the arrest through intimidation and assault.

He was also arrested and charged with a number of offences and will appear in Parramatta Children’s Court on Monday, February 20.

The 41-year-old woman and 51-year-old man will both appear in Penrith Local Court on Thursday, May 4.

Kingswood: Man stabbed in the neck after argument

A man was conveyed to Nepean Hospital in a serious but stable condition after being stabbed in the neck last Friday (January 13).

Police from St Marys Local Area Command were called to Wainwright Lane in Kingswood following reports of a stabbing at 10.30pm.

They were told an argument occurred before the 34-year-old man was stabbed.

A crime scene was established and examined by forensic officers.

Anyone with information in relation to this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

St Marys: Police officer injured after being dragged by car

A police officer was dragged 20 metres when a driver attempted to flee a scene.

At about 6.30pm on Friday, January 13, officers attached to the St Marys Proactive Team stopped a sedan in Monfarville Street, St Marys.

They arrested a male driver and were speaking to the passenger when he moved into the driver’s seat and began to drive off.

An officer was dragged and sustained bruising and grazing to his left arm and leg.

At 11.40pm a 21-year-old man attended St Marys Police Station where he was arrested and charged with ‘using an offensive weapon to avoid detention’ and ‘drive while disqualified’.

Entitlements questioned As the list of Federal MPs being dragged into the “entitlements scandal” increases, public outrage is increasing as the rumour mill hums along churning out figures, some correct and others not, about what MPs are entitled to and what they are paid.

This entitles MPs and Senators to domestic and overseas travel for themselves, and in some situations members of their family, in carrying out their duties.

Naturally, if this is correct, this can have significant legal and political ramifications. On a federal level, the resignation of Health Minister Sussan Ley and the firestorm of controversy that lead to the departure of former MP Peter Slipper are two recent examples.

There is no doubt that if MPs are legitimately rorting the system, they should suffer the consequences. We should be careful not to engage in a witch hunt too quickly though. Irrespective of your political inclinations, it is important to remember the old adage that “if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys”. The writer of this column is certainly not advocating for MPs and Senators to be allowed to misappropriate public money for personal gain. However, greater analysis is needed before we all hit the outrage button as a result of click-bait media.

A good example is Senator Matthias Corman, currently in the spotlight for claiming travel entitlements for trips to Broome with his family. The man works in Canberra five days a week as Finance Minister, and it only takes a Google search to learn that he is a Senator from Western Australia.

Why shouldn’t he be entitled to spend some time with his family in and around his official duties?

It remains to be seen if his use of entitlements have been legitimate, but the community at large need to “watch this space” before jumping to conclusions.

After all, no matter who you vote for, these people are charged with running the country.

Police

Stolen medals returned to widow War medals taken from Glenbrook home last year mysteriously returned via post to police EMILY NEWTON

here were tears of joy at Penrith Police Station last Friday (January 13) as three stolen World War II medals were carefully restored and returned to their rightful owner.

The medals, which were stolen from widow Sue Summers’ property at Glenbrook last year, were received at Penrith Police Station in an anonymous parcel on January 3.

Chief Inspector Tracy Stone said the police were helped by the community and local businesses to repair the medals to reflect their former glory and honour.

“We discovered that the war medals were actually in disrepair and were not fitting to be returned to this owner,” Chief Inspector Stone said.

“We’re glad to be able to return these... it’s exactly why I do my job.”

Mrs Summers was accompanied by her daughter Ann Smith to receive the medals that belonged to her late husband.

“We are over the moon, I can’t even put into words how we are feeling,” Ms Smith said.

“It’s an absolute miracle how this has all happened.

“We had come to terms with the fact that we would never see them again.”

Mrs Summers was almost speechless as she cried with joy when the medals were returned.

She thanked the Penrith and Blue Mountains community and police for their assistance in ensuring the medals found their way home.

“Thank you very much for returning them.... we know that there is good in the community,” Mrs Summers said.

Her daughter thanked the community for its support and the local businesses who restored the medals to their deserved glory.

“I need to thank Penrith Police and Springwood Police who have been amazing through this whole ordeal,” she said.

“We can’t be thankful enough. It kind of restores our faith in humanity a little bit.”

In October, Mrs Summers’ home was forensically examined by police which was unable to return any clues.

The parcel was sent to Penrith Police just two days after Springwood Police had called Mrs Summers to tell her investigations were still ongoing.

The break and enter still remains unsolved and police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Residents evacuated as vehicles burn Police believe blaze at Derby Street unit complex was deliberately lit but rule out serial arsonist EMILY NEWTON

he fire that evacuated 25 residents and saw multiple cars destroyed on Tuesday is believed to be an opportunistic attack.

Shortly after 2am on January 17, Police and the NSW Fire Brigade were called to a residential block of units on Derby Street.

Acting Superintendent Peter McKenna of Penrith Police said residents were woken by fire alarms and thick smoke coming from the unit block.

“Through initial investigation it appears that a vehicle has caught on fire underneath the units, that particular fire has then spread across other garages within the units damaging another three vehicles,” he said.

“At this stage, we cannot determine the origin of the fire.

“It would appear to be opportunistic, although we can’t rule out that the fire was targeted.”

While police consider the cause of the fire to be undetermined, circumstances indicate that it has been deliberately lit.

“The information we have is that the particular garage that the vehicle was in was open at the time, and that vehicle

was unlocked. That does go in hand with an opportunistic type offence,” Supt.

McKenna said.

He said that residents and owners of the cars were very upset following the attack.

“My understanding is there is no insurance for any of the vehicles at the moment, so that’s always going to hurt. People do it tough these days and certainly don’t need this,” he said.

Fire crews were forced to use a power saw to cut through garage doors to reach the cars that had been set alight.

There were no injuries, however the residence directly above the garages also suffered damage.

A crime scene was established and police forensics officers and detectives inspected the area on Tuesday.

“There has been no indication of this particular area having arsonists,” Supt.

McKenna said.

Police also believe there is nothing to link this incident with other fires.

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact Penrith Police on 4721 9444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 at the first opportunity.

Education

Need for tech increases school costs Moving with the times: Laptops for individual students are now commonplace in local classrooms “At the end of the day everyone has to move with the times and when it’s expensive it is unfortunate.”

The Australian Scholarships Group Planning for Education Index discovered for a child born in 2017, the forecast cost of government education in Sydney is nine per cent above the national metropolitan average at $75,080.

The estimate cost has risen by 25 per cent over the past decade with school fees, the cost of extracurricular activities including excursions and uniforms all rising in the past year.

Private school education is significantly higher.

Mrs Button said there are pros and cons to the technological advance.

“I think it is a good thing because it’s bringing everyone into the modern world – Zavier is even teaching me things on the computer that I didn’t know how to do,” she said.

“It’s a great way to be mobile and compact all the work the students do into one device.”

he back to school shopping trip is no longer just about pens, pencils and new exercise books.

Local parents are forking out thousands of dollars in new equipment to ensure their children don’t fall behind at school.

The rising costs are largely thanks to the growth of technology in the classroom with most students, both primary and secondary, requiring a laptop for their studies.

Glenmore Park mum Roslyn Button told the Weekender they’ve spent around $2000 on their son Zavier’s school equipment in the past year.

“He’s in Year 6 this year and we’ve had to get him a laptop, which he has had for a while, and had to buy him an iPhone for him to be able to download his homework from,” she said.

“Pretty much everything is online for him now.”

Mrs Button said unfortunately this is where the schooling system is heading.

“Our eight-year-old daughter Grace is even starting to use the laptop for various school projects and I expect she will probably need one soon,” she said.

Last time I was there after being sent by my GP I ended up leaving. There were no beds and more people were coming in by ambulance. The time before I was sent there by the doctor next door and still waited for six hours and still no bed so I discharged myself. It’s always the same there.

Numerous cars have been destroyed in this time including mine. Numerous fires have been lit in unit blocks around the area, vacant houses have been destroyed.

What will it take before something constructive is done to find this person.

etween January 24 to 29, motorists are advised to think twice before taking risks on the road as double demerits will be in place for Australia Day. The reminder comes after St Marys police charged 264 motorists with speeding over the Christmas and New Year period.

Acting Superintendent Robert Toynton from the State’s Traffic and Highway Patrol Command said drivers need to take more care on the road for the safety of everyone.

“In 2016, we saw the road toll increase to 384. This is an alarming statistic,” he said.

“Operation Safe Return begins on Wednesday, January 24 and concludes on Sunday, January 29.

“Double demerits will be in place for all speeding, mobile phone, seatbelt, and helmet offences for the entirety of the operation.”

While everyone is encouraged to enjoy the public holiday, safety must be the top priority when it comes to driving.

“I’m really excited to become a citizen – it’s a beautiful country with beautiful people and it really is a blessing for me and for my family,” she said.

“We love living in western Sydney especially because some of my partner’s family lives here so it’s nice to be close to them.

“We’ve also made a lot of friends here which has been great.”

He is already an Australian citizen after sitting the test several years ago.

The couple have a two-and-a-halfyear-old daughter Eliana, who is also an Australian citizen.

“I love Australia because it’s just such a beautiful place and there’s a lot of freedom – we’re very happy here.”

ypnotist Wayne Donnelly is entering the minds and transforming the lives of Penrith residents.

His hypnotism focuses on tapping into the subconscious mind to help individuals become a better version of themselves.

“Have you ever been hypnotised,” Mr Donnelly asked your writer, the appointed test case for this story.

Feeling both sceptical and curious, I volunteered to be hypnotised with the goal to achieve more confidence.

“The more you try to pull your fingers apart, the more stuck they become,” he repeated.

As his voice echoed in my mind, my fingers became more tightly stuck, and my hands began to shake while I desperately tried to pull them apart.

Following a few moments of briefly being put into a sleep-like state, I awoke feeling refreshed, excited and ready to conquer the day.

I had been, despite my original disbelief, hypnotised.

He laughs as he explains that many of us are hypnotised daily without even realising it.

“It’s about finding the place between the conscious and the subconscious mind.

“Think about when you’re watching your favourite television show, and someone is trying to talk to you but you just can’t quite focus on what’s being said.

“What about highway hypnosis, when you drive to work and when you get there you have no memory of the buildings you passed. That’s a state of hypnosis.”

Mr Donnelly travels across Australia sharing his hypnotic skills and neurolinguistic programming to create effective and lasting change.

“Years ago I was suffering from depression, and I actually saw a hypnotist and that helped me so much,” he said.

Impressed and grateful for the power of hypnosis, Mr Donnelly has dedicated his life to using his hypnotic power for good rather than evil.

“I’ve been doing hypnotism since 2008.

I used to be a banker, but then the GFC set me free,” he said.

Today (Friday, January 20) Emu Plains Sports Club is hosting Wayne Donnelly for his Comedy Hypnosis Dinner Show.

Confessions of a trolley man: How I became chief shopper PAUL DORIN

en, it seems, are becoming a more common sight in supermarket aisles, busy checking things off their list.

I’m one of those guys with an increasingly bigger role at home and decided to give myself the title of Chief Grocery Shopper.

Chief Grocery Shoppers need always to have a list because it definitely cuts down on the impulse buying.

When we get the opportunity, minus the kids, my wife and I enjoy grocery shopping together.

Her list can be a mile long and I have noticed her shopping trolley looks very different to mine.

She buys all those essential cleaning products and likes to read the labels.

Grocery shopping feels like being in a bookstore with her.

Then there’s shopping with toddlers.

Forget asking for a price check, when you take a toddler shopping you probably need to be asking for a reality check!

Being buckled into the trolley’s uncomfortable metal seat, unable to move very much and surrounded by food that can’t be reached, even I’d be bored and grumpy.

Then there’s arriving at the checkout and finding all those unwanted items the little critter has grabbed along the way. A chocolate here, a packet of biscuits there.

As the kids have become a little older, supermarket shopping is less of an ordeal for them – and me.

I’ve found engaging the kids makes things a little more fun.

Before setting out, we sit down and go through the supermarket brochure and circle a few items we need and that becomes their job to find those items as we journey up and down the aisles.

It makes the time go faster – except for the toy aisle.

What really tests me is the self-service checkout and the octopus of eager young hands keen to help swipe things past the barcode scanner.

I get paranoid listening out for the beeps, trying to limit the times an item gets scanned and constantly annoying the shop assistant asking for items to be removed.

And the moment I hate most usually comes with a half-full trolley and the little voice from around my knees announces: “I need the toilet!”.

I have a couple of supermarket strategies; zoom down the lolly aisle reminding the kids of their recent visit to the dentist; and I never go in just to purchase just one item, I have a bad habit of walking out with my arms loaded. Now, where’s my list?

Penrith’s much anticipated annual Australia Day event is changing this year.

Australia Day means different things to different people but in essence it’s about reflecting on and celebrating who we are, what has shaped us and the wonderfully unique and diverse country we live in.

This year on Australia Day, we will celebrate our pioneers and our rich and colourful history by making everything that’s old, new again and bringing the country to our City.

aking part in a mammoth 130km bike ride fundraiser is a challenge for anyone, but if you’ve never ridden a bike before it makes it that much harder.

Cambridge Gardens residents Danii and Adam Leatherbarrow will be taking part in the ‘145Classic: Ride For Youth 2017’ fundraiser event on March 20, riding from Sydney to Kiama.

Having never ridden a bike before, Mrs Leatherbarrow has been in training for the big event.

“I’ve never been good on a bike; I’ve always had balance problems and never properly ridden a bike until now,” she said.

“It’s all a bit of a challenge with learning to ride and doing something that’s actually difficult.

“I do enjoy riding now but it is tough – it’s a challenge but when I get the confidence up I’ll be a lot different.”

Before his last biking event, Mr Leatherbarrow was in the same boat as his wife, never taking to riding a bike either.

After competing in a Sydney to Canberra fundraiser last year, it’s something he wanted to do again.

“It’s great to be helping charities and giving back,” he said.

Headmaster Mark Lewis said the results across the HSC and International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) were excellent as expected, and well deserved.

“All of our students performed well across all areas of the curriculum and should all be very proud of their results, they worked hard and have been rewarded for their efforts,” he said.

Three students earned places on the HSC All Round Achievers list, with Fady Youssef the highest achiever with an ATAR of 99.35.

Mr Youseff said that the best advice he can give other students is to set a goal to work towards.

“Set a goal from the start so you know what you want to achieve and you’re always going in the right direction,” he said.

“The HSC is a very stressful time in your life, and the year is just going to get harder.

“Everything, regardless of if you’re doing the HSC or not, you need to work hard to get what you want.”

The school’s three IB students also performed exceptionally well with all students scoring an ATAR of over 90.

Double health shock for local family Rare diagnosis: Cambridge Park couple rocked by news that both children have Cystic Fibrosis gene, most of whom, just like Mr and Mrs Mayhew, have no idea.

“It was a big shock, we knew nothing about Cystic Fibrosis. I had never even heard of it,” Mrs Mayhew said.

“Both my boys have a common gene, which we later found out I am a carrier of.

The other gene, my husband carries.

“We were told there were only 50 recorded cases of that gene type that my boys have in the world.”

The rare disease impacts families from the very beginning and continues throughout life as people with Cystic Fibrosis undergo daily regimes just to stay healthy.

“Jacob was only 10-days-old when I got the call to say they had found the gene, so from 10-days-old, our lives changed drastically,” Mrs Mayhew said.

To raise awareness of the disease, the family is taking part in the annual 65K 4 65 Roses Walkathon on February 25 at Leichhardt Park.

“My husband and I are doing the full day, 65kms between us,” Mrs Mayhew said.

The walk raises money for Cystic Fibrosis NSW and Westmead Hospital and will be the second year the family has taken part.

aving one baby with Cystic Fibrosis would be an enormous challenge for any family.

Having two is not only a bigger mountain to climb, but also extremely rare.

One in 2,500 babies born in Australia are diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, and for one Cambridge Park couple, it’s news they’ve received twice.

Belinda and Ben Mayhew, parents to Liam, eight-months-old, and Jacob, three-years-old, are determined to raise awareness of the disease that both their boys have been diagnosed with.

“There is no cure for Cystic Fibrosis at all,” Mrs Mayhew said.

“At the moment my children have a life expectancy of 50 with the gene type they have, but that can be shortened.

“My kids can easily pick up respiratory conditions... little common colds to a normal person can be quite damaging to someone with Cystic Fibrosis.”

People with Cystic Fibrosis develop an abnormal amount of excessively thick mucus within the lungs, airways and the digestive system.

here are now three Noddy’s driving around town thanks to Ross Hutchison from the Ross Hutchison Foundation.

Known as carer cars, the concept came to fruition after Mr Hutchison saw the difficulties the elderly and sick had in finding reliable and cost effective transport to visit the doctor or hospital.

“I was always in and out of nursing homes and hospitals and I saw the need for a vehicle like Noddy,” Mr Hutchison said.

People who don’t have access to medical appointments or treatments, people on their own or with carers who don’t have a means of transport can all use the carer cars to get around.

Mr Hutchison said the idea has generated a lot of interest over the years.

“We have so much support for the cars which is why we have got more on the road now,” he said.

“I think we need around 10 to keep going so we’ve got six or seven more to go.”

Mr Hutchison added that the biggest challenge is raising funds for the insurance, registration, maintenance and fuel for the cars but he makes it work.

“I want to be able to fund these through the Foundation myself so they can be given to the city for free – it works itself out,” he said.

“I’m really humbled to be able to do these things and help people get around.

“If we have the ability to give something back we should do it because we can and because these things need to be done.”

Review of CBD lighting underway An audit of pedestrian lighting in Penrith City Centre and nearby residential areas is underway, as part of a broad strategy to enhance the community’s experience of the city at night.

Measurements of lighting levels along footpaths and in public spaces are being taken to determine the adequacy of current lighting.

Penrith Mayor John Thain said the aim of the work is to identify how lighting

can be improved to promote pedestrian safety, amenity and way finding.

“Council’s Pedestrian Lighting Strategy aims to provide an adaptable, modern and smart network of lighting for the City Centre,” Cr Thain said.

“With the use of smart controls, features such as dimming, programming and remote monitoring are now feasible options to consider during a lighting upgrade project.”

here is a concept in Buddhism called ‘impermanence’, which in a nutshell, means that nothing is permanent. That is, nothing lasts, and everything is in constant state of change. This concept has merits for business owners, as we can often get ‘stuck’, worrying about what has been and concerned wholly about projected outcomes. We can be operating under the impression that things cannot change, which in turn, can wear down our ability to respond to opportunities.

A simple (non-business) example is one that I relate to greatly.

I swim regularly in an indoor ‘heated’ pool – I say ‘heated’ in quotation marks because to me it always feels cold!

I hesitate to get into the pool every time, and gradually ease my way in. But why do I do that? It is because I fear the initial shock of the cold water. I don’t like the sudden change – I would prefer the water to be warm and comfortable.

But here’s the thing: I quickly adjust, and soon the water temperature feels normal.

Does this sound familiar to you?

Do you think that perhaps the reason you choose not to make changes is because you fear the initial shock?

Here is another example: if I have labelled myself as someone who cannot rise early, and focus only on the lousy feeling I get when I try to wake up at sunrise, I won’t ever change my sleep patterns. But if I focus on one day at a time, and look past the initial feeling, I am likely to experience great benefits.

We all have days were we are less motivated to press forward.

And there can certainly be some uncomfortable, or even painful, consequences of change.

But keep in mind that many of the things we think can’t be changed, are quite often impermanent.

There is a high likelihood that seemingly impossible situations actually do have a solution, even if the initial change isn’t pleasant.

If you keep telling yourself what you cannot do, or focus only on the potential short-term negative effects, you won’t see change in your business.

ast week we looked at SMART goals, this week we look at another key part of the planning process, SWOT Analysis. SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

I recommend creating a SWOT analysis on both yourself and your business, and then updating your SWOT quarterly.

A weakness may have led to a training opportunity, which you’ve now implemented, and it’s become a strength!

Why do a SWOT? Because they provide so many benefits and avoid disaster. Did you know a Kodak employee invented the digital camera, but Kodak only assessed it as a threat to their film business, rather than an opportunity to lead the next big change in photography. We all know what happened next!

Strengths and weaknesses are typically more internal insights. Opportunities and threats are a combination, deriving from our strengths and weaknesses but are also externally generated (for instance, changing demographics).

Strengths: What are you or your business good at? What new skills and experiences have you added? Has a

change in location or the shut-down of a competitor changed things (for instance you’re now the only local mechanic)?

Weaknesses: No one is perfect! What do we not do as well as we could? Is our location wrong? Do we have too many demands on our time? If these weaknesses are impacting our business we can treat it as an opportunity to improve.

Opportunities: Look at your strengths and weaknesses first as they may lead to opportunities. The hire of a new person with new specialties may provide the opportunity to service a new market.

Training may fill a weakness in other areas. Externally new infrastructure may make our business more accessible and desirable.

Threats: If we don’t address a weakness this could become a business threat.

More often though it may be external, like competitors (new or old) undercutting you.

Communicate your strengths to your customers, set goals to address material weaknesses, capitalise on opportunities and mitigate key threats.

You might be surprised at the results.

This year the band are heading out on their ‘One Word’ 2017 tour to celebrate 25 years since the release of the hit single.

“While we’re still trying to push forward and make new music it’s really nice to honour the stuff that gave us a career basically,” Suze explained.

With that impossibly perfect rock voice and her love for songwriting still very much in tact, Suze and the band have another release planned for sometime this year.

“We really need to, it’s time,” she said.

“We’ve been working on new music for a while now.”

While the music scene in 2017 is a vastly

different beast to what it was in the early 90s, Suze said she has no interest in getting involved in the competitive side of the industry.

“I’m not really into the whole music business’ games of who’s got this number one record out, it just doesn’t interest me at all,” she said.

“I just like the process of it all. The process is what makes me happy and it’s important for me to just keep on being creative.”

I wanted to work, I needed to work.”

This was what brought Baby Animals frontwoman Suze Demarchi back to Australia after 16 years in the US. While the Perth born rocker spent much of her time focused on family life, the call of the live stage was just too great to ignore.

“In LA I was being a mum and writing here and there but I just needed to perform,” Suze said.

“It was basically a trial to come back for

a year and put the kids in school and all that. But when I got back my marriage ended, so then it was like ‘OK, I’m here for good’.

“It was a really strange time because I was home but I didn’t really feel like I was home.”

It was the 2013 album ‘This Is Not The End’ – the band’s first release in 20 years – that helped Suze find her feet again.

“It was really good to work and throwing myself into making that record was really a bit of a lifesaver,” she said.

While the album has been warmly embraced, there’s still a huge amount of interest from fans in the Baby Animals’ earlier work which included tracks like

Mark Wahlberg stars in this action packed drama that takes a look into the true story of one the world’s largest manmade disasters.

In April of 2010 an explosion and subsequent oil spill occurred on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico.

11 people lost their lives in the disaster, which led to the worst oil spill in US history. The film is based on the New York Times article ‘Deepwater Horizon’s

Final Hours’ which detailed exactly what occurred on the rig and the response from crew members.

The cast includes Kurt Russell, Gina Rodriquez, John Malkovich and Kate Hudson.

‘Deepwater Horizon’ has received a generally positive critical reception and has been praised for being an engaging action thriller that does justice to a heartwrenching true life story.

This week indie pop outfit The xx release ‘I See You’, the follow up to their sophomore album ‘Coexist’.

‘I See You’ is the group’s first release since band member Jamie xx’s solo album ‘In Colour’, a project which inspired a change of musical direction on this, the band’s third release.

Clearly the gamble has paid off with ‘I See You’ receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews.

The London based trio have managed to maintain a career long high note, a feat that few bands ever achieve.

The band released its first album way back in 2009.

As he retreats from life he starts to seek answers from the universe by writing letters to Time, Love and Death.

When he receives unexpected personal responses Howard begins to see that these three constants work together to contribute to a full life and that there’s

Ê Talking of Nine, could its era of news dominance be over? The network has been pushing hard with promos this past week, trying to hang on to its position as Sydney’s news leader heading into what’s going to be a very interesting year. Under new boss Jason Morrison, Seven News has closed the gap considerably on Nine and quite often wins the vital 6pm slot.

With Seven looking stronger by the week, we may well see a new permanent news leader by the time the 2017 ratings year comes to an end in November. Ê Sad news this week for lovers of classic television with Dick Gautier (pictured), best known for playing the lovable robot Hymie on ‘Get Smart’, passing away at the age of 85. Believe it or not, despite his cult status as part of the show, Hymie was only in six episodes of the classic spy comedy (although he reprised his role for a TV movie). The handsome actor appeared in many movies and TV shows, and also had a career as a stand up comic.

Ê Popular US drama ‘The Affair’ has been renewed for a fourth season. The show is currently playing on Foxtel’s Showcase channel and while it has a boutique core audience, struggles to make it into the top 20 when it airs on Tuesday evenings. ‘The Affair’ hasn’t quite reached the heights of its first two seasons in season three, but remains a quality drama. Ê As mentioned by this column last year, there’s a host of changes to ‘Hot Seat’ on Channel Nine this year. The new format for the show, which returns with new episodes on Monday, will re-introduce some classic features like ‘50/50’ while there’s also options for contestants to ‘switch’ a question or ‘ask a friend’ in the audience. The whole start of the show will be different with a ‘Fastest Finger First’ round being introduced. Strategically, Nine is introducing the new show a week ahead of the official ratings season,

and while ‘The Chase’ is off air over at Channel Seven due to the tennis.

Ê Foxtel will air season six of ‘Girls’ express from the US, launching on the Showcase channel on February 15. Ê Everybody needs good ‘Neighbours’, but it seems good ‘Neighbours’ need a spell-checker. The long-running soap returned last week but in an embarrassing stuff-up, a number of the cast members’ names were spelled incorrectly in the show’s opening titles. Channel Eleven quickly rectified the issue for the following night. Ê The new hit US show ‘This Is Us’, which has broken ratings records overseas, will premiere on Channel 10 at 8.30pm on Wednesday, February 8.

Expect a lot of fuss surorunding this one.

Whatever you think of the scandal, there’s one clear winner out of it all – rising journo Julie Snook. She handled the situation exceptionally well, and her star is only going to continue rising on the back of the drama. The whole thing was a terrible look for Channel Nine. And what made the whole situation worse was Nine’s embarrassing statement released the day after the video clip leaked, with Sherlock almost fobbing off the situation as a non-event. As a news organisation committed to getting the facts and truth behind a story, it was pretty poor form.

Two of the most common are warts and corns.

Although similar in appearance to the untrained eye, their treatments differ significantly and a correct diagnosis is essential to achieve optimum resolution.

Warts (Verruca Pedis/Plantar Warts) Warts on the feet are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus and can occur in singular or multiple lesions.

Signs and symptoms: • Painful to squeeze from the sides.

• Present in both weight bearing and non-weight bearing areas on the foot • Cauliflower like appearance that grows between the skin striations.

• Petechiae – small black dots indicating small blood supply to the viral tissue • Overlying callous may be present contributing to pain on weightbearing.

Corns (heloma durum) Corns are caused by direct pressure.

This may result from a prominent bony area under the foot, malaligned toes, biomechanical overload, or compressive footwear.

Signs and symptoms: • Painful on direct pressure • Overlying callous with skin striations over the top • Circular in appearance • Typically occur in high pressure areas on the foot.

feet it is very important that you have your feet checked by a podiatrist.

Both corns and warts are known to aggressively grow in size if left untreated.

People often make situations like this much worse by not seeing an expert sooner.

Why it’s important to control fleas in your beloved pets

Fleas are the most common cause of itching in dogs and cats. Flea bites can lead to flea bite allergies where pets become sensitive to the flea saliva and a single bite can cause intense irritation.

This can in turn cause skin inflammation and skin infection.

When a pet chews or scratches at the area they can damage the skin further.

This leads to further inflammation and skin infection.

Severe skin infections (pyoderma), referred to as hot spots are a common complication of flea bite allergy.

Fleas also act as a carrier for tapeworms.

Pets often require medications to reduce the inflammation and infection caused by fleas in conjunction with flea treatments.

Why are fleas so bad at this time of year? Female fleas lay about 100 eggs a day. They drop from the pet and land in bedding, carpets and the soil. In warm and humid conditions the flea can develop from an egg to an adult in days.

Most of the flea’s life cycle is actually in the environment and not on your pet. It is very important to use a good quality flea treatment.

There are now a lot of newer genera-

tion drugs that are available as chews, top spots or collars. Depending on the product they can last from one to three months.

Most will kill adult fleas within hours and some within 30 minutes. Some will also prevent flea eggs developing once laid.

It is very important to make sure every pet in the household is treated. Some pets may not be affected by fleas as much but can act as carriers within the household.

It is important to remember that most products work by killing fleas once they are on your pet. This means that you will still sometimes see fleas while using a product. The fleas will continue to hatch from eggs in the environment. To reduce flea eggs in your environment, vacuum inside regularly, including under lounges and beds. Wash pet beds in warm water and detergent and dry in the sun.

Avoid shaking pet beds outside as you will just transfer eggs into the yard. The eggs are very hardy and can withstand most treatments, this is why spraying in yards is often ineffective. Flea bombs in houses are more effective if used after vacuuming to encourage fleas to hatch and by ensuring areas under furniture are exposed. Always ensure pets are protected if treating with any pesticides.

Although there are less fleas in the cooler months it is best to keep treating every pet all year round. Flea eggs can survive

Fun water games can have dangerous consequences We’ve all held our breath under water playing with our friends, but it can actually be an extremely dangerous practice...

Children are naturally competitive.

So when I recently left my children and their cousins in the care of other adult family members in the pool while I went indoors, the boys decided it would be fun to have underwater races, seeing who could swim the furthest distance while holding their breath. Which I also did as a child. How were we to know then that it could be so dangerous?

But it has since been proven that any underwater breath holding contests can have tragic consequences, so this provided a perfect opportunity to educate my children and discuss why they should never play this game again.

Shallow Water Blackout (SWB), otherwise known as Hypoxic Blackout, can occur when people hold their breath underwater, or are practising underwater breath holding drills whilst swimming training.

SWB happens without any warning of its onset – the swimmer simply loses consciousness due to a severe lack of oxygen to the brain, and drowns.

Swimming Australia advise that we

should never swim alone, never ignore the urge to breathe, never hyperventilate prior to swimming, and never play breath holding games and challenges, and that Hypoxic training should only be performed in competitive swimming training under strict guidelines and supervision.

The other lesser known dangers are Dry and Secondary Drowning. As parents we are usually on high alert supervising when our children are in or near water, but completely relax once they are finished swimming for the day, but unfortunately the danger is not always over.

Dry Drowning and Secondary Drowning occur after a child has left the water as a result of having taken water into their lungs.

With Dry Drowning, water doesn’t reach the lungs, but the breathing in of water

causes your child’s vocal chords to spasm and close up, shutting off their airways and making it hard to breathe. Symptoms of Dry Drowning usually happen straight after any incident in the water.

In Secondary Drowning (also called delayed drowning) the child’s airways open up, letting water into his lungs, but not enough to disable breathing right away. Instead, the water sits there and inhibits the lungs’ ability to oxygenate blood, causing more and more trouble breathing over the course of several hours. Symptoms of secondary drowning generally start within one to 24 hours of the incident.

Whilst both events are very scary, it is important to remember that they are also rare, making up only one to two per cent of all drowning incidents. The key is to always practice good water safety, to remain vigilant after your child leaves the water, and know the signs of Dry and Secondary Drowning. The symptoms of both conditions include coughing, chest pain, trouble breathing, vomiting, blue lips or pale skin and feeling extremely tired. Your child may also display changes in behaviour such as irritability or a drop in energy levels, which could mean the brain isn’t getting enough oxygen.

If your child has any symptoms of Dry Drowning and Secondary Drowning after being in water, please seek medical help right away at your local hospital.

For many people, Christmas and New Year is a time to catch our breath. It is the chance for a rest. A time to get away and have a break.

Yet rest is a funny thing. We have these few weeks off over Christmas and New Year to try and recharge our batteries but then we’re back into it! Madly chasing our tails. Busy. Flat out. School. Sport. So many things crowding our lives. Some people working six, often seven days a week. Certainly not much chance for rest there!

You might be surprised to know that the Bible is concerned for both our physical rest and also our spiritual rest.

In the New Testament book of Mark, as Jesus’ popularity is growing, and so many people are keen to meet Him, it is becoming increasingly busy.

Jesus says to his disciples, “Come with me by yourselves to a quite place and get some rest”.

Jesus knows the importance for us to have physical rest; to be able to take a regular break and get away from it all.

But there is also spiritual rest, which can be just as important.

In the New Testament book of Matthew we hear Jesus say, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls.”

Here is real rest!

How to really achieve your health goals this year Now that we’re further into January, it’s time to forget about fad diets and focus on how to really achieve your goals in the 12 months ahead...

What new year’s resolutions did you make this year?

I’m going to guess that for many of you it was around diet/weight loss.

I’ve done the same myself in the past, and every single time it only lasted a month, tops.

Failure is often a sign that we’re not setting the right goals, so this week I wanted to give you some suggestions for how to make sustainable changes to your diet in 2017.

Stop demonising food Don’t think about chocolate. You’re thinking about chocolate aren’t you. This is the issue with pointing out a certain food as being off limits or ‘bad’ – suddenly it becomes all you can think about.

Instead of restricting foods aim for moderation instead. If you find your will power is lacking then only purchase the amount you wish to eat i.e. buy one small bar of chocolate at a time.

Swap fad diets for small, sustainable changes Diets don’t work. Studies have shown

that the majority of people who lose weight on a diet put it back on, and then some.

We need to shift the focus to health rather than weight.

Focus on one small change at a time, like adding an extra serve of vegetables to your daily routine.

These little steps may seem insignificant, but keep building on it over a period of months and it will result in big changes.

Incorporate mindfulness Learning to be mindful of what you’re eating is a great first step to managing your health.

When you’re eating chips portion out the amount you want to consume and then

actually focus on the taste of the chips.

Often when we eat we get distracted making it easier to over-consume.

Focus on the ‘why’ When I was working as a nutritionist I noticed that the people who were most successful in maintaining long term change were the ones who had a highly motivating reason to do so.

For example, those who wanted to improve their health to increase their chances of being around for their family were more likely to be successful than those who were focused solely on losing weight for an upcoming event.

Focus on your ‘why’ and make sure it’s something that is truly important to you.

n January 2016, Trent Merrin was in unfamiliar territory.

Taking part in his first gruelling pre-season in Penrith’s punishing heat, Merrin must have wondered what he’d got himself into after seven years at St George-Illawarra and those beautiful Wollongong breezes.

Fast forward a year and the weather conditions haven’t changed, but Merrin has.

Now far more confident than he was when finding his feet at Penrith last pre-season, the 27-year-old emerged as a true leader at the club last season and recognises how far he’s come.

“I feel a lot more comfortable out here now,” he said.

“It was a bit uncomfortable last year to get set out west in new surroundings and getting used to everything but I’ve now really made myself comfortable in the area and in the team so it feels like home.

“In saying that the training has been really tough and the boys keep you on your toes too. But it’s great to have one year down and to have settled in here.”

The Panthers this week headed to Port Macquarie for a pre-season training camp.

It will not only allow the players to escape Penrith’s stifling heat, but will give the club a chance to connect with some of its youngest fans through signing sessions and junior clinics.

Merrin says that the club’s connection with members and fans, which is stronger than ever, has been pleasing to watch unfold over the past 12 months.

“It’s definitely something that we hold close to our hearts and we’re really humbled by it,” he said.

While the Panthers have a relatively young squad – particularly when it comes to playmakers – Merrin said his job as a leader is relatively simple.

“It makes my job a lot easier having these young mature-headed players around me,” Merrin said.

“My approach is to lead on the field and on the training paddock and do what I can there.”

Netball Hadley honoured to be named in leadership role at Swifts enrith netballer Paige Hadley has been named vice-captain of the NSW Swifts ahead of the 2017 Suncorp Super Netball season.

The Swifts announced last weekend that club stalwart Abbey McCulloch has been appointed captain for the upcoming season, with Hadley her deputy.

24-year-old Hadley has played her entire career in the Red Dress after making her elite netball debut with the Swifts as a replacement player in 2012, earning herself a full-time position in the playing roster ahead of the 2013 season.

Her quick career rise has seen the young midcourter become a staple of the Australian Diamonds squad, with 15 international caps to her name as well as a Gold Medal from the Netball World Cup in 2015.

Good friends off the court, Hadley and McCulloch made their 50th Trans-Tasman Netball League appearances in Round 13 of the 2016 season against the Northern Mystics in Auckland.

McCulloch said she was humbled and honoured to be awarded the Swifts captaincy and was ready to step up to her new role. She also spoke of the proud legacy her predecessors had left and her longing to leave her own mark.

“It’s a huge honour and I still can’t believe it to be honest but I’m excited to

step up into the role of captain and do my best of fulfil it,” she said.

“I hope to leave something special behind when I do finally retire. At the end of the day I want to do justice to the role, especially as there has been so many great leaders before me, but I’m excited about the challenge ahead and feel I’m ready for it.”

Hadley was equally delighted to take on the role of vice-captain, and felt the appointments were coming at the right time for both players.

“Firstly, I’m really proud of Abbey being appointed captain. She’s a great friend and has shown great leadership qualities, and I feel very honoured to stand beside her as vice-captain,” Hadley said.

“I think Abbey and I bring different things to our roles, and we are both really excited to put them into place. It’s a big step up for us, we were both the young ones last year and now we are among the older members of the squad, so it’s our time to step up and create a positive team and club culture.

“We’re a young team and we’re entering a new competition, so it’s like a clean slate and Abbey and I get to be at the forefront of that.”

The Swifts play their first match of the season against the Giants on February 18.

Blue Sox look to gain momentum Rocky season for Sydney in Australian Baseball League but playoffs still a possibility TROY DODDS

he Sydney Blue Sox have had varying results throughout the 2016/17 Australian Baseball League (ABL) season. Currently sitting at 12 wins, 19 losses, the Blue Sox are still only two games from playoff contention.

Despite a solid start to the season, the Blue Sox have had challenges playing away from home, with three wins in 15 attempts.

Sydney Blue Sox Manager and Penrith local, Jason Pospishil, knows that trend needs to reverse if the club is any chance of the playoffs.

“Consistency is definitely the key for the second half of the season,” Pospishil said.

“We’ve been so close in lots of matches this season, we’ve got to find a way to win those games.”

Although the scoreboard might indicate otherwise, the Blue Sox have seen strong performances from the squad and seven of the roster were selected to play in the ABL All-star Game in December.

Garrett, a prospect of the Miami Marlins organisation, has been enjoying his time in Australia, both on and off the baseball field.

“The experience has been great, it’s a good schedule for playing baseball and seeing the country,” Garrett said.

“My goals for the remainder of the season are to have quality at-bats and hit the ball to all parts of the field.”

German pitcher and Los Angeles Dodgers prospect, Sven Schueller is confident the Blue Sox will find that winning feeling soon.

“We had some good momentum up in Brisbane,” Schueller said.

“The aim is to carry that into our next home series against Canberra.”

The Blue Sox take on the Canberra Cavalry in their final home series at Blue Sox Stadium, starting tonight (Friday, January 20) and running through to Sunday, January 22.

The Blue Sox are based at Blacktown but have strong Penrith links and represent Sydney as a whole.

Aussie Rules Farrugia chosen to lead Giants into an exciting new chapter estern Sydney school teacher Amanda Farrugia will lead the GWS Giants as captain in the inaugural NAB AFL Women’s season.

Farrugia was announced as captain in front of her teammates this week ahead of the Giants’ first NAB AFL Women’s match in Adelaide against the Crows on February 4.

Born and raised in western Sydney, Farrugia discovered Australian Rules when looking for a new activity to stay fit.

After joining Macquarie University in 2011, Farrugia has led the club for the past two seasons in the local competition and was awarded the 2015 Mostyn Medal as the Best and Fairest player in the Sydney AFL Women’s competition.

The 31-year-old will lead a five woman leadership group that includes marquee signing Emma Swanson as vice-captain, local star Maddy Collier, Victorian midfielder Jessica Dal Pos and ACT veteran and former WNBL legend Jess Bibby.

“It’s a huge honour to be named captain for the inaugural season,” said Farrugia.

“I’m humbled by the opportunity and the responsibility that comes with this role.

“While I’ve got the title next to my name, I’m confident that we’ve got a fantastic

group of players who all have their own leadership style and will share the leadership with me.”

On announcing the captaincy, AFLW Coach Tim Schmidt said Farrugia was a standout candidate.

“Amanda is a brilliant communicator, a passionate person who upholds the values of our team,” said Schmidt.

“On and off the field she gives one hundred per cent to everything she does and has the respect of the entire playing group.”

Giants Chief Executive David Matthews welcomed the announcement less than a month out from the Giants’ first ever AFLW match.

“This is a historic appointment for the Giants and Amanda is the ideal person to lead this group in the inaugural NAB AFL Women’s season,” Mr Matthews said.

“To have a player from western Sydney chosen by her peers to lead the GIANTS is a sign of the growth of Australian Football in this region in recent years.

“Strong leadership has been a key element of the Giants mens team with Callan Ward and Phil Davis leading the club brilliantly on the field in our formative years and I’ve got no doubt Amanda will continue to take our club’s on-field leadership to new heights.”

Away from the refereeing dramas, the Wanderers were much better on the field than they have been in recent weeks, particularly in defence.

In what was his second start as a Wanderer, Vedran Janjetovic was put to the test on multiple occasions early on, most notably making a gravity-defying save to deny Alex Wilkinson’s header.

He was constantly taunted by Sydney FC fans, but held his composure well throughout the contest.

Popovic was happy that his side kept a clean sheet for the first time this season.

“We looked very solid defensively and we stopped a team that’s in very good form from really creating anything,” Popovic said.

“Overall it was a good performance.”

Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold praised the Wanderers, saying they played well and created plenty of chances.

“It was a good derby. A lot of passion, a lot of fight and two teams that played well,” he said.

Arnold disagreed that the Wanderers were denied a penalty.

The Wanderers travel to Campbelltown Stadium this weekend for a home game against the Newcastle Jets, who also had a draw last week – a 2-2 thriller against Perth.

on the competition table, and a victory could edge Tony Popovic’s men in front of the Jets by a point.

anderers coach Tony Popovic was left seething after match officials missed a certain penalty call that could have given his side an unlikely victory against arch rivals Sydney FC in the Sydney Derby last weekend.

Popovic was visibly upset on the sideline after replays showed officials failed to award a penalty for a certain hand ball in the first half.

It would have given the Wanderers a 1-0 lead and in a tight contest, could have been enough for the side to secure victory in front of more than 40,000 fans at Allianz Stadium.

In the end, the match finished in a scoreless draw.

“It was a penalty. It was clear, it doesn’t get clearer than that,” Popovic said post-match.

“The deflection was so clear. It’s a tight game, it’s a derby, that changes the game.”

Popovic went on to question the poor refereeing in the A-League this season.

“Unfortunately we’re seeing far too much of it,” he said.

“It’s certainly happening to us quite regularly but I’m sure it will turn.”
