Simple gesture has big meaning as hams brighten up Christmas for locals in need STACEY MOSELEY

ver 60 disadvantaged families in Cranebrook will enjoy a delicious ham lunch this Christmas thanks to the Penrith Valley Fund. Families associated with Fusion’s Cottage were shown compassion and goodwill when representatives from the fund handed out hams on Tuesday morning. “It is fundamentally important to support our local community and by giving these gifts we hope these families will have a bright Christmas,” Chairman of the Penrith Valley Fund, Joe Grassi said. Th is is the fourth year the fund has donated Christmas hams to the less fortunate in the Cranebrook community. “Christmas brings out the best in people, we need to have this type of spirit every day of the year,” he said. “This is the first year that I have personally been involved with the donations and it is great to be a part of the Christmas spirit.” Local resident, Ray Martin, said his Christmas ham was a timely gift that he may not have been able to otherwise afford. “The cost of living is so high at the moment so it is great to receive some assistance from the community,” he said. “Th is ham will feed my friends and family on Christmas Day, even the dog and cat will get the bone. “Fusion is a great charity that helps out the less fortunate around Penrith and I’d just like to thank everyone at the Cottage and the people who donated the hams.” The Cottage was established in Cranebrook in 1998 as a youth development service for the local community. Survey shows many agree with poker machine overhaul, despite strong campaign from clubs A new survey could be the light at the end of what has been a very dark tunnel for David Bradbury on poker machine reform...
Local News
Finally, some good news for David CASSANDRA O CONNOR
L
indsay MP, David Bradbury, may not have the support of local clubs for the Federal Government’s poker machine reforms, but he may have a new, unlikely ally in the Opposition. Former Opposition Leader, Malcolm Turnbull, is part of the Coalition’s working group to design the party’s own pokies reform policy. An Internet survey conducted by Mr Turnbull has shown that 57.3 per cent of people either agree or strongly agree with the Federal Government’s move to introduce mandatory pre-commitment technology. If the survey’s results are taken to heart then the Coalition may fi nd itself in agreement with the controversial pokies reforms. “It must be noted that this survey is not statistically representative of the Australian public, like a Newspoll or Nielsen Poll,” Mr Turnbull said. 7,475 people were surveyed with just over half living in NSW. The minister said that some of the strongest opposition to mandatory pre-commitment came from people who described themselves as regular poker machine players. “While just under 35 per cent of the general population either disagree or strongly disagree with mandatory pre-commitment, almost 67 per cent of regular poker machine players either disagree or strongly disagree with the policy,” he said. However, there is overwhelming support from the general population to limit spins to $1. A startling 47 per cent of survey respondents strongly agree with $1 spin limits and a further 20 per cent agree with the reform. The majority of respondents also believe

more counselling support needs to be provided for gamblers and that live odds should not be broadcast during sports programming. “Cashed-up gambling interests have been running a very expensive and personal political campaign on this issue, however, I
believe that most Australians think that something needs to be done to address the issue of problem gambling,” Mr Bradbury said. Noticeably, the 21 respondents from the Lindsay electorate trended against the survey
results, with Lindsay recording the lowest level of support for both mandatory or voluntary pre-commitment technology and the second lowest level of support for any tinkering with the current Federal poker machine laws.

Over and Out — Captain.” When Brian succumbed to his battle with cancer on December 15, his wife submitted the epitaph to the Daily Telegraph, who published it on Tuesday. “Brian was a good man and a good dad and a good provider,” Patricia Leitch said. The couple were childhood sweethearts
who met when Brian and Patricia were 15 and 14 respectively. “He owned trucks and worked on the construction of Warragamba Dam. He would go off to the bush and work very hard… when we retired he decided he would build a bus that he named ‘the mongrel’ and for 10 years we travelled around Australia – not the tourist routes but to the bush towns – we love bush people,” she said.

Can I help you?

nd that, my friends, is 2011. It’s hard to believe that yet another year is gone, thrown into the history books with the usual highlights, lowlights and roller coaster ride. I’d like to use my fi nal column for the year to pay tribute to the people who all come together to make the Weekender what it is each and every week. As we enter our 21st year, the Weekender sits in a very special position and we are exceptionally proud of the product that we deliver to you each week and of the achievements of 2011. Th is year, the Weekender has indeed broken new ground – a new masthead was launched in February, we launched the Extra Time rugby league magazine, grew our entertainment magazine FYI to a new level and produced a year of stories amongst the best in our history. I’d like to fi rstly thank the team here at Weekender HQ who work hard every day of the week to produce a publication of the highest possible quality. To my team of journalists – Emily Crane, Cassandra O’Connor, Stacey Moseley, Nathan Taylor and Adam Scroggy – thank you for a year in which we laughed, cried and shared a whole spectrum of stories with our readers. I’d also like to thank all of our weekly columnists, who had a unique view on various subjects – Peter Overton, Tom Steinfort, Damian Smith, Michael Todd, Michelle Grice, Francis Bevan, Sandra Cabot, Anthony Walker, John Lavender, David Stein,
Trent Baker, Martin Cominotto, Mick Gilfoyle, Darryl Brohman, Monty Panesar and Lorraine Pozza. Thanks to all of the people who contribute to our stories, too, whether it be local politicians, media advisors, local business people or just local people who are commenting about certain issues as a one-off – we do really appreciate your help. I’d like to say thanks to our sales team – Simon Gould, James Miller, Sergio Carrasco, Linda Lewis, Paulette Adams, Ali Elali, Emily Larkham and Tracey Nelms – for a year in which new ground was broken. You are the backbone of our business.
We laughed, cried and shared a whole spectrum of stories with our readers
On that note, a huge thank you to the many advertisers who promote their brand and products through the Weekender. Your support is valued and ver y much appreciated. To our production team – Irene Adams, Andrew Komoder, Kate Stanford and Alana Christanga – thank you for all the work you do each week to ensure the paper looks as it should. A special thanks too to our photographer, Melinda Jenkins, for her work in capturing the moments of 2011. Thanks to the print team at Spot Press, our distribution team, Mona in accounts and all of our suppliers, resource providers and others who play a part in what we do. The Weekender truly is a group effort.
And most of all, a huge thank you to all of you. Without our readers, we are nothing, and the enormous amount of positive feedback we get is so very much appreciated. And yes, even the not-so-positive feedback is welcome as well – varying opinions is what makes the world go around. 2011 will be remembered for many things. On an international scale, it’ll be remembered for disasters in Japan and New Zealand. Nationally, the tragic Queensland floods will forever be an historical landmark of 2011. And locally, many issues raged, ranging from dumps and toxic waste to new State MPs, a changing of the guard over at the Penrith Panthers and the constant battle with crime and drugs. Penrith is an amazing city. Very rarely in another region will you fi nd such a dedicated and thriving business communit y, t he huge number of achievements recorded by individuals and groups or the level of passion for certain issues and events. We bask in the joy of suburbia, with a touch of rural lifestyle and splash of city living. It is indeed a unique and special place to live and to do business in. On behalf of our owners and the entire team at the Western Weekender, I would like to wish yourself and your family a very Merry Christmas and a bright, prosperous 2012. Our fi rst edition of 2012 is on January 13. We’ll see you then.

Penrith is one of the first cities in Australia to receive approval for the network’s installation, which is being carried out by t he Nat ional Broadband Net work Corporation. Federal MP for Lindsay, David Bradbury,
ranked the NBN as one of the top infrastructure projects in western Sydney alongside the construction of the M7 and establishment of the University of Western Sydney at Werrington. “It is a significant opportunity for Penrith to be connected to the NBN as many commercial premises will have access to faster Internet capable of supporting a range of smart technologies,” he said. Mr Bradbury said that industries such as aged care, health and business services will benefit greatly from the NBN.
Paul Brennan, Chairman of the Penrith Business Alliance (PBA) said he was pa r t ic u l a rl y ple a s e d w it h t he announcement. “At my own business in St Marys it seems we are still using smoke signals,” he joked. “The National Broadband Network will be a quantum leap for Penrith as many residents and businesses are still operating on ADSL1. “At 3.30pm when all the kids come home to play their games online businesses’ Internet speeds defi nitely slow.”

This injured possum had to be euthanised due to his extensive injuries.
Worst case of cruelty Possum s treatment shocks local wildlife rescuer STACEY MOSELEY
A
local wildlife rescuer said she encountered the worst incident of animal cruelty she has ever seen when she rescued a possum in the local area recently. Kathryn McKay, a veterinary nurse and WIRES volunteer, was called to a home on Brougham Street in Emu Plains on Tuesday, December 6 where she found a severely injured possum.
The juvenile male Brushtail Possum had been trapped by the owner of the home under a washing basket. When Kathryn examined the month old possum he appeared to have several broken bones, however it wasn’t until she got him back to the surgery that the severity of his injuries was realised. The young possum was missing half his front right arm and his back left leg. The bones and muscles were exposed on both limbs.
His injuries were too severe for him to be rehabilitated and released back into the wild so unfortunately he had to be euthanised. He was examined at South Penrith Veterinary Clinic after he was rescued. Three different veterinarians concluded his injuries were caused by some sort of trap. “I have found the whole thing really upsetting, these traps are illegal and hefty fi nes can occur for those who use them,” Kathryn said.
Penrith Police are appealing for witnesses after a 12-year-old girl was assaulted at about 7.40pm on Thursday, December 15. The young girl was walking home with two friends along The Crescent, Penrith. As a result of the assault the young girl received a cut above her right eye, which required some treatment at hospital. The offenders are two females aged between 20 and 35. The fi rst one was described as Caucasian, 155-160cm tall, skinny with fair skin. She had orange brown long hair tied up in a messy bun and was wearing a pink singlet top and dark blue jeans. The second female was Caucasian, 155-160cm tall, skinny to a medium build with long brown hair and was wearing a white top and dark pants. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

About 11.15am last Friday, a woman returned to her home on Bellwood Close, Werrington, to find it broken into. Police attended and commenced an investigation. Later in the morning, police attempted to stop a Mitsubishi 4WD on Aurora Drive, Tregear. A
man ran from the car and was arrested by police after a foot pursuit. Two ot her male passengers were also arrested. The 34-year-old man who ran from police was taken to St Marys Police Station where he was charged with six counts of break and enter, including the earlier break and enter at Werrington. Merry Christmas to the people of Penrith City! As 2011 draws to a close, I’d like to highlight our local heroes and volunteers, without whom our community would be a starkly different place. I’d also like to thank Council staff for delivering vital community services; from childcare services to libraries, from swimming pools to parks and more. Remember, as Mayor with my fellow Councillors, we are your voice in Council to shape our community for the better. I look forward to working with you to harness more opportunities for our City in the coming year.
Amid the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations, it’s heartening to see many Penrith City residents show great generosity of spirit to those less fortunate. Earlier this month, I opened the Penrith Homelessness Forum, which helped lay the foundations for this region’s Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness. Together, we can make homelessness history and enable even the most disadvantaged to lead successful and healthy lives. A safe and happy Christmas to you and your families. See you in 2012!

➤ Christmas is a time to eat, drink and be merry. People are busy entertaining and celebrating with friends and family, and they may become tempted to buy and cook more than is needed. With all this extra food comes extra waste so it’s important to be vigilant about reducing food waste and sorting what waste you do have correctly. To help you sort your Christmas waste correctly, here’s a list of what goes where in your bin: • Yellow bin: wine/beer bottles, plastic soft drink bottles, aluminium cans, cards and paper gift wrap • Green bin: seafood, meat, bones, fruit and vegetable scraps, breads, paper serviettes, paper plates • Red bin: polystyrene cups, candles, lollies/sweet wrappers, plastic plates, plastic bags and plastic cutlery.

Penrith City Mayor, Greg Davies, said you can help ensure safety by making sure your pool and the area surrounding it meets the standard of the Swimming Pools Act. Generally, pools including an inflatable one capable of holding just 300mm or more of water must be fenced and spas secured by a child-resistant barrier or lockable lid. Even relatively small inflatable pools pose a potential danger to children. Check the Swimming Pools Act on the NSW Division of Local Government website to make sure your pool is safe and complies with the laws based on when your pool was built and where it’s located. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ➤ St Marys Library is promoting holiday reading and spreading extra New Year cheer by offering a Wii Console Pack + Mario Kart & Wheel to one lucky winner. Ashlee Thomas rips up her cheque from the office of the Justice and Attorney General.
Thanks, here s $8.59 Exclusive: Jury duty system poorly organised , says local STACEY MOSELEY
A
local resident is out of pocket over $150 after she was summoned to only half a day’s worth of jury duty. Glenmore Park local, Ashlee Thomas, was summoned to attend jury duty at Penrith Local Court where she and at least 30 other members of the public waited for 3.75 hours before they were told they were not needed.
Current State Government allowances for jury duty specify that no compensation is payable for services less than four hours. “I am not the only one this has happened to, but it just seems unfair to me,” she said. “We missed out by 15 minutes and that means I lost a full day’s shift at my work where I am a casual.” To add insult to injury Ms Thomas then received a travel allowance cheque in the mail for $8.59. “The entire experience is poorly
organised and the compensation I received was inadequate,” she said. “As if I am going to go to the bank to deposit that amount? I’ll probably just give it to charity, however I bet there would be lots of people who won’t even bother.” The department said whilst they were satisfied with how the jury duty system is run at the moment there is always room for improvement. What’s your experience? Give us a call on 4722 2998.

enrith LAC’s newest recruit, 37-yearold Michael Kovacs, lost 40 kilograms to make sure he’d give any robber a run for his money. In his early twenties, Mr Kovacs was a slender 60 kilograms. Th is all changed when he was injured in a motorcycle accident, which prevented him from exercising for several months. After he recovered, Mr Kovacs was focused on priorities other than his fitness. In 2002, he met his partner, Debbie, who had a teenage son from a previous relationship. Before long, Michael and Debbie had a baby of their own, as well as a mortgage on a property in northwest Sydney. “At the end of a work day, all I wanted to do was spend time at home with my family,” Mr Kovacs said. “Exercise just wasn’t high on my list of things to do.” After years of not eating properly and exercising only sporadically, his weight had grown to 117 kilograms. Mr Kovacs had often toyed with the idea of becoming a police officer, but knew he had to be in good physical shape to train at the Academy. “So I kept putting that idea back on the shelf,” he said. The turning point for Michael came in January 2010, when he attended an open day at the Academy. “It reminded me of how much I wanted

he c om p e t it ion watchdog and online dating websites will come together to reduce scams that target those looking for love online. Between January and October of this year, more than 1,600 complaints and over $17 million in losses have been reported to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and in 2010 over $15 million in losses were reported. The ACCC convened a working group following a meeting with industry representatives in July to devise guidelines that are intended to improve and support the measures taken by dating websites to counter the activities of scammers and provide guidance on how to better protect users from scams. “These scams typically involve a genuine user of a dat ing website being contacted by a potential admirer who is a scammer in disguise,” a spokesperson from the ACCC said.
Locals are being warned to be careful when looking for love online.
“A f ter for m i ng a relationship with the victim, the scammer plays on emotional triggers to get the victim to provide money, gifts or personal details.” While website operators may have their own ways to warn their users about scams, there are no current regulations and guidelines. The best practice guidelines developed by the ACCC
together with the dating industry are designed to bolster the existing measures used by t he dat i ng websites. According to the ACCC the guidelines are voluntary best practice standards. Tell us about your dating website experiences. Email penritheditorial@ mediaview.com.au or call 4722 2998.

he community can be assured that Penrith City Council is looking after their health with the successful prosecution of the proprietor of the Colyton Bakery for 11 offences against the Food Act 2003. Penrith City Mayor, Greg Davies, said Council’s food inspection program was an essential service that helps keep our community safe from food poisoning. “Council inspects all retail food places across the city and the vast majority do a fi ne job of keeping their premises clean,” he said. “In the ver y small number of cases where businesses fail to meet food
safety standards, Council inspections help expose these risks and ensure customers’ safety.” Cou nci l of f icers’ inspections of Colyton Bakery revealed a number of breaches, which included problems with pest control, cleanliness, protection of food from contamination and hand washing. “The Colyton Bakery standards were totally unacceptable and the owner has been fi ned $40,000,” Cr Davies said. “The court took into account the defendant’s prior conviction and the significant risk to public health and safety with the
failure to maintain the premises to a satisfactory standard.” The same defendant was prosecuted in October 2008 for four offences and was fi ned $8,000. Acting CEO of the NSW Food Authority, Craig Sahlin, thanked the Council for taking strong action in response to these further breaches. “NSW consumers are entitled to expect that the food they buy is safe,” he said. Do you know a local food outlet that breaches standards? Tell us by emailing penritheditorial@ mediaview.com.au.

Priceless service Transport concept proving a big help to locals STACEY MOSELEY
T
he generosit y of volunteer workers f rom Mt Dr u it t hospital will make it possible to transport local patients u ndergoi ng dialysis treatment. A new service was launched earlier this month that transports patients living with kidney disease
across western Sydney. According to Associate Professor, Kamal Sud, the service is priceless. “A service of this kind is very important as the rate of kidney disease in western Sydney is growing much faster than anywhere else in NSW,” he said. The service will be utilised by patients needing regular treatment. “Dialysis treatment can
be a big commitment on the family of a patient as they must transport them to and from the hospital three times a week,” Western Renal Service Operations Manager Jan Hookkee said. “Having a service like this one alleviates the hassle of travel.” The new service will help the many locals who undergo dialysis treatment every day.

Keep Up Your Fitness during the Holidays
In the holiday season it is almost an unspoken rule that unlimited eating, partial workouts and shopping trips take place of your regular routine. This year you have a choice. Follow Connect Fitness’s easy rules to keep up your fitness during the holidays and you will stay active and healthy. 1. Choose one treat – You cannot deny your body the chance to indulge. When arriving at a party choose one treat. Pick something you can only treat yourself with during the holidays and make it good. 2. Control your drinking – Alcohol is dehydrating and an easy way to add more calories onto your daily intake. Drink water throughout the day to maintain hydration and have a glass of water for every alcoholic drink you consume. 3.Eat small meals during the day – Snack on healthy foods like fruit and nuts throughout the day to prevent over eating at the buffet. 4. Eat more vegetables with your meal – Have a

larger serve of vegetables instead of rice, bread or stuffing and skip the gravy and dressings. This will help to stop those extra calories being consumed. 5. Exercise and reward yourself – Stay motivated by having an incentive. If you fall off the wagon, don’t beat yourself up. Get back on without missing another second. 6.Alter your exercise program – With help from a personal trainer (included in Connect Fitness membership), you can alter your exercise program to suit your needs to still achieve your health and fitness goals. There is no reason to let your training and nutrition program spoil your holidays, but there is also no reason to let your holidays spoil your training and nutrition program either. Come in to Connect Fitness today and speak with a personal trainer to design a specific an exercise and nutrition program that will work for you in the holidays.

n a show of true Christmas spirit last week, St Marys Local Area Command and Penrith City Council donated 15 BMX bikes and 15 bicycle helmets to Father Chris Riley’s ‘Youth Off the Streets’ program. The program seeks to help young people overcome significant disadvantages,
personal traumas and adversities. The bikes changed hands last Tuesday at St Marys’ ‘C.A.R.E.S’ facility, where Senior Constable Karen Scott handed the bikes and helmets to Western Sydney Outreach Program Manager for Youth Off the Streets, William Pass. Senior Constable Scott said she was happy the bikes were granted to the program
and was full of praise for Penrith Council’s support of t he excha nge, which happened just in time for Christmas. “It’s nice to be able to give something to an orga n isat ion where underprivileged children will benefit,” she said. Youth off the Streets welcomes all young people from the area to come along and try the bikes out.

undreds of shoppers were delighted with what seemed to be an impromptu performance at Penrith Westfield food court recently. As hungry Christmas shoppers ate their dinner last Thursday, 20 or so “presumed customers” jumped up from their seats and sang the
festive classic, ‘All I want for Christmas’. And the reason for the performance? An advertising stunt by Penrith Westfield to promote the location of the food court. “Prior to the Westfield development in 2005 our food court was located opposite to Hoyts in the current Rebel site. Six years on and it’s surprising to hear amongst our shoppers
comments and enquires about its current location,” Erin Austin, marketing manager at Penrith Westfield said. “Th is festive season we played a stunt on this precinct by commissioning a mob flash carol performance [to draw attention to the food court].” The inspiring video has had some 50,000 YouTube views.

Michael Todd, Penrith BEC
1. What is your Christmas wish for locals? Th is is the season where millions of dollars will be spent on gifts, many of which will be unwanted and not appreciated. Christmas points to the greatest gift to our world. A time when Christ tells us, “The gift g of God is eternal life.” My wish for our people is that they will receive the greatest gift of all. 2. What is your New Year’s resolution? The late King George V1 made a New Year’s broadcast in 1939 where he quoted from a poem p called ‘The Desert’. I said to the man who stood at the gate of the Year, “G “Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.” He replied, “Go into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better th than a light and safer than a known way.” I don’t think it’s possible to adopt a better New year’s resolution than that. 3. Greatest achievement in 2011? Grasping the meaning m of Nelson Mandela’s words, “Let it go”. We spend too much time on trivialities, being bein concerned with things that do not matter. It shortens our life. Mandela was freed from prison after 27 yea years to become President of the South African Republic, instead of exacting revenge he “Let it go”. After all, as Zig Zeglar reminds us, “It’s our attitude, not our aptitude that determines of altitude altitude.”” Greg Davies, Penrith Mayor 1. What is your Christmas wish for locals? mas That they are all around to celebrate Christmas in 2012. 2. What is your New Year’s resolution? Not to break New Year’s resolutions.
2. What is your New Year’s resolution? Ring people when I say I will. 3. Greatest achievement in 2011? The mighty Panthers beating the Eels in extra time at i engaged d to my Centrebet Stadium and of course, getting beautiful fiancé Tenniel.
Bernard Fehon, Tactical Solutions 1. What is your Christmas wish for locals? I hope that everyone has a safe Christmas/ New Year and that iit is a time for them to be grateful for what they have and look fforward with optimism to things getting even better. 2 2. What is your New Year’s resolution? C Continue exercising to maintain the overall health benefits tthat it brings. 3 3. Greatest achievement in 2011? For many people, including me, the end of the year means shopping for last-minute gifts, trying to catch up with everyone to celebrate another year, and working hard to desperately kick all goals before the office closes. That’s why along with your shopping list and New Year’s plans, you should also be making a list of tasks to complete before the year’s end, and checking it twice. Here are some things I think should be on your list. 1. Reserve cash for taxes. It’s important to remember that even if you’ve had a good year, cash is not the same as profit. You don’t want to get hit with a big tax bill that’s going to hurt you. 2. Have your fi ling system down pat. Along with the cash supply, you want to have all the right documents in place for fi ling taxes. 3. Eliminate insurance headaches. Make sure you’re covered and up-todate. 4. Review your suppliers. You may be paying more than you have to for various suppliers. In today’s market, cloud computing and software can you save a lot. 5. Plan. Don’t forget about the big picture while you’re taking care of the day to day. You need to have a vision for the future. The questions aren’t always easy to answer but I’ve found most business owners just need to talk to someone about it to gain reassurance before they put it down on paper and that is fi ne. I’d like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and I look forward to seeing you in 2012.

Solving YOUR business problems 1034WWD2017
Women mean business
GFC aftermath almost over
Multitasking!
Even if you have the best idea in the world, your small business may struggle to reach its potential without the funds to grow. As many operators will know, business lending channels mostly dried up during the global fi nancial crisis. That’s why more and more SMEs are choosing to bypass traditional fi nance options and seek out funding from private investors, by agreeing to sell part of their equity interest in the business in return for a cash injection. Trading ownership for capital is a tough decision, but there’s no shortage of businesses willing to give it a crack. Australia’s largest capital raising platform for small private companies, The Australian Small Scale Offerings Board, reports at least one enquiry per week from start-ups needing to raise up to $2 million cash. Last year it helped 46 companies to gain capital, and around $120 million has been raised through the Board in the past six years. The good news for small operators is that traditional channels are reopening and new ones are being created – a handful of smaller fi nancial institutions added new business loan products in 2011. The major difference we’re seeing since the GFC is in the way lenders price business loans; that is quoting a rate range, rather than an advertised price, determined by a business’ risk profi le.
You’re writing an email, checking your Facebook pages, taking phone calls and you’re halfway through a proposal for a new project. Somewhere in the middle of doing those tasks, you had a great idea… now what was it? We often think that multitasking is an efficient way to get everything done that needs doing. And in fact, sometimes as mums, carers and partners we have to do a bit of that. But in business, multitasking is not only bad for losing good ideas, it is also a source of stress and can impact on your health. Multitasking might increase your productivity in the short term, but over time, you can develop chronic stress and you are less likely to be productive. So what’s the alternative to multitasking? Try to focus on one task at a time – prioritise your tasks each morning and focus on the most important or urgent fi rst. Don’t have multiple files and windows open that are not necessary for the task you are working on. And where possible, turn your phone off for periods during the day so you can have uninterrupted time to focus. Try not to get angry, instead deal with this situation with a level head. This is the perfect time to seek fresh arrangements or a new position at your job. It’s also the ideal time to sort out finances and to get to grips with lowering your debts.

Startling insights are going to come your way on how to improve your love life. If your relationships are causing you some bother and your discussions haven’t been able to break the back of a stubborn problem, it might be time to seek out expert advice or someone who has relationship skills. Getting an objective viewpoint can’t hurt and at least it will allow you to see things in a new and different light.
July 23 to August 23
If you’ve been finding it hard to complete your tasks either at home or at work, stop what you are doing for a while and regroup so that you can recommence with a bolder, more revitalised spirit. If you need help it will be forthcoming as bosses, colleagues and clients will all be very impressed with your efforts and the results that you are able to achieve. In fact you will get through a huge backlog of work!
August 24 to September 23
You could be getting flashes of inspiration and snippets of information about how to proceed forward with your love life. If things have been difficult or confusing then pay attention to physical gestures and non-verbal communications as these can be excellent ways of bridging the gap. Children and younger people will be a delight to be around and you will be proud of how they deal with a challenging situation.

You have an incredibly finetuned intuition and sniffing out a deal shouldn’t be too hard. If interest rates have been a concern then you will find a rather novel way of handling the matter. It may simply mean re-negotiating the family budget and dispensing with some unnecessary expenditures. If you’ve had debts or been concerned about Christmas holiday costs now is the ideal time to clear things up.

Over the next month you will begin to feel fantastic due to the combined influence of the Sun, Jupiter and Pluto. You can expect to feel more optimistic and your zany sense of humour will be brought to the fore. This is the ideal time to enjoy the company of friends and family members. You’ll be full of vitality and won’t want to stand still. You’ll have itchy feet and will be looking to get as much fun out of life as possible! Enjoy it, have fun!

Family life is going to dominate, for some news of a birth is likely and for others a loved one may be about to move home or to begin a new educational course. Parents and in-laws will feature heavily and you’ll be helping siblings and other relatives as well as dealing with extended family issues too. However, you must not try to take everything on yourself. Instead, work on improving your delegating skills.

Party hard!
Staying Healthy
Australian small business employees have just as much reason to celebrate this Christmas as their big business counterparts, with 86 per cent of Australian SMEs hosting Christmas parties for their staff despite challenging economic conditions. In a sign that family values are still the number one priority for Australian small businesses at Christmas, the workplace Christmas party remains a strong tradition for SMEs who use the celebration to reward their staff for hard work throughout the year. According to the BOQ Straight Talk Survey, a regular nation-wide survey that canvasses the views and experiences of small business owners, nearly 65 per cent of small businesses invite partners and family members to attend their Christmas party because it reflects the family friendly values of their business. Christmas spirit is very much ingrained in small business culture in Australia, with many organisations going above and beyond to reward their staff at the end of the year. SMEs who extend a Christmas party invitation to their employees’ partners and family also help to foster staff loyalty and a sense of community within the organisation. Accordingly to the survey, the 74 per cent of small business owners who gave their staff bonuses in 2010 offered cash over additional leave or gifts. See you in 2012!

Christmas Surprises View from Above www.glenmorepark.anglican.asn.au
Rev John Lavender Christmas is a time of surprises. “Surprise” gifts can either be wonderful or less than exciting. We all know t he “su r pr ise” of opening a gift and you’re not sure what it is and you’re even surer that you’ll never use it! Lists are often put together of gifts that are quite under whelming. Typically underwear and socks feature, along with handkerchiefs and the latest and greatest, here today, gone tomorrow gadget. But we also know the joy and excitement of receiving that special gift; something we didn’t expect and something you’ll always treasure. Several years ago, there was a song with the words, “What if God was one of us?” The big surprise at Christmas is that this is exactly what happened! The eternal, mighty, all powerful, loving God entered our world. He was born not in a palace or with
majestic splendour nor w it h f r o n t- p a g e headlines but with great humility to a little known teenage girl in a backwater rural town. T he Bible’s Ne w Testament gospel of Matthew tells us how the child born was given the name Jesus or “Immanuel...God with us.” This is extraordinary! God the Saviour, the eternal mighty Lord, the good Shepherd, has come to be with his people. He came to rescue and to call all people to himself and to lead them home. You cannot afford to leave God’s gift of Jesus unopened this Christmas. As you would make any gift your own by receiving it, opening it and using it, t his Christmas receive the gift of Jesus by looking to him and trusting him, allowing his wonderful promises to shape and direct your thinking and life...and have a very happy Christmas!

Keeping Fit David Stein
Well it’s that time of year. Most fitness goals are forgotten or put on hold for a while, and I reckon so be it! What? A trainer saying don’t get fit? I can see the letters already. Not at all. I’m saying don’t stress about achieving some long term fitness goal at the expense of enjoying a big lunch with the family, and anyone who has seen me eat my mum’s trifle will know I practice what I preach! Your health and fitness is a holistic picture. I see Health and fitness as a mindset that influences my choices everyday. It’s always my choice, if I think an occasional unhealthy decision is good for the overall picture, I’m fi ne with that. If you think being fit is always making choices you don’t want to make, just to get fitter, you need to spend time sorting out why you want to get fit. If you’re doing your fitness resolutions next year, and these always score high on the most often made resolutions, I’ll give you a tip. Put your effort into WHY you want to get healthy. Make the reasons so big, bright and
compelling, the ‘how’ will sort itself out. Make how you will feel so real, you want to start right away. Part of that holistic health picture I spoke of is mental. Being happy is healthy! Anger has been scientifically linked to heart disease. Sometimes at Christmas old debates or emotions bubble up. It’s worth remembering no one can make you feel anything against your will. You choose your reaction. Always. Don’t start telling me how cranky old aunt Mavis talks in that tone and it makes me angry... It’s down to your choices again. Appreciation is another good healthy state/emotion. Instead of complaining about the brown socks, appreciate the incredible gift of health you have. Whatever level it’s at at the moment. I have a friend who found out they have cancer a couple of days ago. All her friends would give every present they ever get to see her healthy instead. If you have your health and can look forward to many more Christmas’ yet, that’s something to really appreciate way more than anything that can be put under the tree. I read a survey the other day that

Painful nails The medical ter m for a n ingrown toenail is onychocryptosis. This is when the nail grows into the surrounding tissue. ‘Ingrowns’ are one of the most painful conditions I see in the clinic. It always amazes me how painful something so small can be, however this is truly an agonising problem if left for too said 4 out of 5 people would like a gift of a donation made to a charity. If you haven’t bought all your presents yet maybe that’s an option. I personally much prefer them over a dodgy jumper. Especially when cranky aunt Mavis makes me wear it all day... So give everyone a huge smile while you’re eating that third serve of Christmas pudding and brandy custard and tell them Dave said it’s healthy! Merry Christmas, see you next year. long. The most common scenario is a toenail, most commonly the big toe that has been clipped too short. This leaves a jagged edge down the side of the nail that fish hooks into the flesh. The nail becomes embedded in the tissue and as the nail grows out it pushes further in. Once the skin is broken and there is an open wound often an infection sets in. Th is is when the Podiatrist becomes your best mate and removes the nail spike giving instant relief. In the majority of cases the infection will resolve without the need of antibiotics, however if the infection is long term, the use of antibiotics, which are prescribed by your local doctor, can help speed the process up. In some cases the ingrown toenail is no fault of the patient. In some people the big toe nail

becomes very curved and the sides of the nail push down and inwards into the surrounding tissue. Th is is called an involuted nail and is the second most common cause of onychocryptosis. In this scenario the likely reoccurrence rate is very high, as the nail shape will not resolve. The only long-term treatment option is either partial or full nail removal. There are a couple of options with this procedure. In some cases people are referred to a surgeon for this to be carried out in hospital. However Podiatrists offer a very simple and effective option called a nail av u lsion w it h phenolization. Th is procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic in the clinic. The nail edge is removed permanently therefore preventing the nail from ingrowing again.

Fashion Fixation The Pharmacist Says Martin Cominotto M
Quitting smoking For many people their New Year resolution will be to quit smoking. Without the stresses of everyday life, this is a great time to kick the habit – but to do so successfully you must plan ahead. Cigarette addiction is not just the physical nicotine addiction. You also have to break the habits around smoking and the psychological dependence.
If you normally have a smoke in the morning, plan a new morning routine, such as going for a 10 minute walk and drinking juice. If you work, have morning or afternoon tea with the non-smokers. The first three days are the hardest to quit, and you must really plan on avoiding situations that makes it hard to refuse smoking. After this the next three weeks will really allow you to break habits and become a non-smoker. Instead of feeling like you are missing out on smoking, focus on what you can gain. If you can save $80 a week by not smoking, allocate this money to rewarding yourself! Do something you wouldn’t normally do like have a beauty treatment or go GoKarting. Most people will try and quit a few times before they become a complete non-smoker. Every time you do try to quit you will learn a little more about yourself and your habits and this makes planning and quitting easier the next time. One thing that many people don’t realise you can still be a quitter and smoke. As the saying goes ‘Every cigarette you don’t smoke is doing

NYE fashion advice It is time to ring in the New Year! What better way to do just that than with a party with friends and family? Whether you’re hanging at a friend’s house, or partying on the harbour this week’s column is your guide to what to wear to any New Year’s Eve celebration. HOUSE PARTY The house party is a great option for New Year’s Eve celebrations. It is a less formal you good’, so cut yourself a little slack. If you really can’t give up your morning cigarette just yet, but are smoking half the amount each day, you are still quitting. Make sure you put aside the money you save and reward yourself! If you go out with friends and end up smoking, start again the next morning. The main thing is to never stop trying to quit. If the nicotine patches or gum help you smoke less this is a lot better for you than smoking full time and these products are much safer and cheaper too. There are a number of other support products that can help you quit, like lozenges, chewing gum and inhalers. Talk to your doctor about quitting, call the Quit hotline or my team at Martin’s Chemist can help you.
occasion and can often involve a BBQ, dancing and a few drinks. My easy option for this year is the maxi dress. Chuck a pair of swimmers on underneath and you have a stylish, comfortable option that can be adapted to suit your party. Wear a plain maxi and add jewellery to make the look more sophisticated. Plus these great topto-toe dresses are perfect for any shape. Doesn’t matter if you’re petite, apple-shaped or even pregnant, the maxi dress is a great way to celebrate the coming of 2012. NYE PARTY Colour! Colour! Colour! Th is year fight any urge you may have to just throw on a black dress and instead pop into ICE and check out the bright shades of summer. NYE is a great night to be daring and try something new! HARBOUR SIDE PICNIC If you are brave enough to head into Sydney on NYE then make sure you’re dressed appropriately for what will be a long and fun day. A great shorts and T-shirt combination is a great way to be comfortable but look sharp as well. Cotton On has some great baggy Kansas woven tees at the moment. Match that with coloured shorts and a hat, as well as some chunky jewellery and flat shoes and you’ll be laughing as you welcome in the New Year. If you are with friends have a

Harness Racing A monster ten race program was conducted at the Penrith Paceway last Thursday night. The fi rst event got underway at 5.52pm with the last starting at 10.17pm, thus making it a long night for the large crowd that was in attendance. However the children did not seem to mind because our new playground area was in full swing and they were certainly enjoying themselves. They enjoyed themselves even further when Santa Claus arrived on course with a bag full of lollies to distribute amongst them. The night was evenly balanced with five of the races going to favourites and the remaining five going to reasonably well supported runners. So all in all most of the punting public went home with a smile. Top driver Glen McElhinney scored with back to back winners in races seven and
Lorraine Pozza eight. Renegade Master won the seventh with what was a good performance, favoured with a good draw from gate three he was soon in front and led all the way but it was the ease of his victory that was impressive, he will win again soon. Glen’s second win with Miss Megan ($2.30) was a repeat performance with her leading all the way from gate two but she was not near as impressive in the run home. Western Destroyer ($1.80) Jim Douglas carried on from his win the previous week and scored again with a very good display coming from well back in the field. Newcastle trainer driver Michael Formosa made the trip down the freeway a lot more pleasant by taking out race nine with Wide Grin ($3.60).

i ng s w o o d H ig h School has taken home the WJ Young trophy for sporting success in western Sydney for 2011. The award, given out by the Sydney West School Sports Association at the association’s annual Blues Night, recognises the top allround sporting performance
out of 58 schools that comprise the western Sydney region. In the past 28 years, this is only the third time the school has won the award. “The award is not only about the success of students at the school but also awards the staff for their contribution as well,” said Belinda Douglass, a teacher and s p or t s c onv enor at Kingswood High.

Free sport thanks to grant Kids kept active via impressive sporting initiative at St Marys EMILY CRANE

n a bid to get children active, St Mar ys Indoor Sports and Recreation have allowed schools to use the sporting facilities for free. And now the initiative has received a boost with the State Government donating $5,000 so the centre can continue its work. Minister for Spor t and Recreation, Graham Annesley, met with local MPs Tanya Davies and Bart Bassett at the centre last week to present a cheque on behalf of NSW Premier, Barry O’Farrell. “We offer public schools in the area access to the sporting facilities in our centre free of charge,” said Director of St Marys Indoor Sports and Recreation, Brett Moore. “We’re very grateful for the government’s assistance, and it’s because of this support that we can continue.” St Marys Indoor Sports and Recreation offers a number of
sporting options, including cricket, netball, football and dodgeball. “It is a fantastic initiative by Brett and his team at St Marys Indoor Sports and Recreation to make the facility available to school children free of charge,” Mrs Davies said. “The grant approved by the Premier will enable the centre to continue to provide local students with the opportunity to experience a diverse range of sports and activities.” Mr Bassett said families were doing it particularly tough at the moment and people like Mr Moore deserved thanks for putting somet h i ng back i nto t he community. “The program assists schools plan their sporting calendars with confidence as the facility is indoors and has the added bonus of ensuring children are active which has obvious health benefits,” he said. The owners are looking to provide additional benefits to schools in the near future.
Graham Annesley and local MPs hand over a cheque to St Marys Indoor Sports.
