T
he health system is facing more criticism in relation to how it deals with administration issues after a local woman received a bill for her husband’s medical treatment 18 months after he passed away. In July of 2010 Isabel Woodbridge lost her beloved husband Neville to his battle with mesothelioma, an aggressive lung cancer caused by asbestos exposure.

But the wound of losing her life partner was reopened when Mrs Woodbridge received a medical bill for her husband’s treatment at Nepean Hospital some 18 months after his passing. Mr Woodbridge had intense chemotherapy to treat tumours in his lungs caused by working as an electrician on Naval ships containing asbestos. “When he was being treated for the cancer we would always tell reception at the hospital that the bill was to be forwarded to the Dust Diseases Board, but we would still get them in the mail sometimes and I would tear them up,” Mrs Woodbridge told the Weekender this week.

After 18 months of grieving, it was a complete shock to Mrs Woodbridge when she opened her mail recently to fi nd the bill dated from mid-2010. “Just over a week ago I received a bill in the mail, even though he is no longer with us, which was very, very disturbing and traumatic because the family is still in grieving,” she said. “I called the hospital and was transferred there to there to there before they said ‘you will have to fi x it’. And I said, ‘no you fi x it’, it was very upsetting. “We always received excellent treatment at the hospital but there is defi nitely something wrong in their accounting section.” Continues on Page 8

The buses that didn’t come: Government working to fix transport issue It hasn’t been a great week for NSW Education Minister, Adrian Piccoli, as the pressure mounts on him to fix a transport issue that left hundreds stranded...
EMILY CRANE
W
hen Jannine Merriman received a phone call from the NSW Department of Education (DET) on Sunday morning she thought it was to confi rm the school bus route her children would take this year. But imagine her surprise when she was informed her two sons, who have Asperger’s Syndrome, would not be picked up for their fi rst day of school on Tuesday. Ms Merriman had to take time off work every day this week to drive her children from their St Clair home to the Springwood campus of Aspect Western Sydney School. “When I spoke to them [DET] they said thanks for driving, but I don’t have a choice. I had to take them up and bring them home,” Ms Merriman said. The local mother was in the same boat as hundreds of other parents due to contract issues with transport providers involved with the Assisted School Travel Program. “There is always anxiety this time of year with transport – what time will they be picked up, dropped home and who is the driver? – but this year it has just been really hard,” she said. Ms Merriman, who works at the Nepean Area Disabilities Organisation, was forced to work just a few hours a day to accommodate the changes. “I called the department the Wednesday before school went back to confi rm transport, they told me it was approved but my letter just hadn’t come yet… then I got the call on Sunday,” she said.

“I am unhappy that others have gotten transport with the company that we had last year.” Under pressure all week, Minister for Education, Adrian Piccoli, said the issues
were being resolved and an inquiry has now been launched. “Under the direction from the NSW Government to fi x this issue urgently, the department last night began offering higher
pay rates to transport providers on runs of less than 30 kilometres,” he said. “The department advises me that acceptance of this rate has been high and it likely all transport runs will soon be fi lled.”

undreds if not thousands of stories come in and out of our newsroom here at the Weekender each and every week. Every now and again, one comes along that just makes you laugh out loud for no real reason, even if it probably shouldn’t. I wanted to kick the column off this week with what is my favourite story of the year so far, and even though there’s a serious side to it, one can’t help but crack a wry smile. About 10.30pm on Friday, January 27, a 31-year-old woman visited the Centro Nepean shopping centre. She allegedly went inside a supermarket and exited with a bag of chips without paying. The woman had her bike inside the centre, and when security tried to stop her, she jumped on and attempted to ride away. However, the automatic doors didn’t open quick enough and the woman crashed into the glass. Police were called to the centre, but the matter will be dealt with civilly. Apparently, there’s no truth to the rumour that it’ll be dealt with by releasing footage of the incident to ‘Australia’s Funniest Home Videos’. A shame, really. A sore head and bunged up bike was the result from a desire for some late night munchies. When you consider all that goes on in our region, our city and our world, a story like the above doesn’t rate much of a mention as part of the news cycle. And while that’s more than understandable given there’s no real news value attached, one does have to question sometimes the tact of the media in delivering the news we apparently want to see. We woke on Sunday morning to see the news of the death of Alan Bond’s wife splashed across the front page of both of the major newspapers. It was the latest twist in the bizarre, and at times remarkable life of Mr Bond. And while it was indeed newsworthy, I felt sick to the stomach when watching the evening news and seeing camera crews and journalists surrounding the man, prodding him for comment. Given the circumstances surrounding his wife’s death, surely Mr Bond wasn’t

going to say anything that couldn’t wait until a more appropriate time. Don’t get me wrong – as journalists and editors we often have to make calls that essentially invade people’s privacy. Public interest is often so intense, that there is a duty to report what is happening. But there is still a line that sometimes should not be crossed and when a woman battling personal demons takes her own life, surely hounding her husband is not in the best taste. And so we move on to the Australia Day riots last Thursday and the media barrage that has existed since then. Most of the coverage has focused on who tipped off who, and who said what. And indeed, there is a story to be told there, with concerns over the integrity of those in the Prime Minister’s office very, very real. But isn’t it amazing how we’ve forgotten the key element that sparked all of this. The people who stormed the front of the restaurant last Thursday have essentially been thrown to the sideline, used as fi ll for the much more interesting debate between Tony Abbott and Julia Gillard. The scenes we saw last Thursday were disgraceful, and the nation deserves to be rightly ashamed of each and every person who “protested” over something that wasn’t actually ever said. People who believe they can get whatever message they are tying to get across by using violence and playing up for the cameras should be sadly mistaken. In one way, it is a shame that the story of what happened behind the scenes at Ms Gillard’s office emerged, because it took the focus off the disgraceful behaviour of individuals we share the air with. No matter what you are protesting, no matter what your background, nobody has the right to behave the way the protestors did last Thursday. Protests are generally about getting your message heard. They are generally about campaigning for real change. Last Thursday’s protest was about neither of those things. It was about banging on the glass, chanting ridiculous things and acting like immature brats – all for the cameras. It was protesting for protesting’s sake and action deserves to be taken against those involved.

Mayor blasts State Government over housing plan EMILY CRANE
P
enrith City Council has launched a stunning attack on the State Government, saying its potential plans for new housing lots are “ill-conceived” and “illogical”. The government has asked developers to nominate sites that could pave the way for additional housing, but Council believes the plan will bypass the views and needs of the local community.
“Asking developers where we should develop is like letting a chocoholic loose in a Darrell Lea shop,” said Penrith Mayor, Greg Davies, who was joined by Opposition Leader, John Robertson, at Orchard Hills to discuss the issue. The housing review could see 34,000 new housing lots developed in Penrith, which would be on top of the 25,000 lots already planned for in the government’s ‘Metropolitan Plan for Sydney 2036’. “Th is is planning madness,” Cr Davies said. Developers have nominated sites in

Mulgoa, Glenmore Park, Orchard Hills, Mount Vernon, Luddenham, Kemps Creek and Wallacia. “These developer nominated sites do not need to be developed and certainly not if it’s going to cause more strain on infrastructure, services and taxpayers,” Cr Davies said. NSW Planning Minister, Brad Hazzard, said local councils would be consulted on all major housing proposals and would be responsible for assessing plans to permit construction. me. My little grey shorts, grey shirt, the smell of the classroom, my teacher and my classmates… memories that I treasure. Well, this week they were front and centre for me again as my wife and I walked our five-year-old Allegra to school. The start of this education journey began about 6am, Allegra top to toe in her brand new school uniform, pleading with us to get her to school as the sun was coming up! Well, that was a good sign… maybe our little treasure would sail into class, meet her new friends and embrace the thousands and thousands of classroom days ahead. She dragged us through the front gates and into her new world. Bingo! She soaked up the playground, her little locker, her buddies and my wife and I felt immediate relief. A great, caring teacher the icing on the cake. Oh, and by the way the classroom had that same smell about it, 40 years on. Of course we were not alone, as thousands of mums and dads trod down the emotional footpath of day one at school for their little one. In half an hour, we made friends with other parents as we shared a common

appy 2012 to everyone… my year is off to a flying start. 40 years ago I started at Lane Cove Public School and that day is still crystal clear for
bond. Day one went well for Allegra and I hope it went well for your little treasures as well. Day two, well that was a diff erent story. Floods of tears and determined not to go. We got Allegra there and took comfort that all over the world, in rich and poor communities most, if not all parents and kids felt the same way as all of us. And this is only the start of 13 years of learning... for children, AND mum and dad. I wonder what day three will be like! Hope you can join me for Nine News, Sydney’s number one nightly at six. THE SCENE ON THE M4 MOTORWAY AT ST MARYS ON MONDAY AFTER A TRUCK ROLLED. PHOTOS: KIEREN TILLY
Truck rolls on busy motorway Dramatic scenes at St Marys as huge truck loses its load near Mamre Road
T
hese are the stunning pictures taken after a truck rolled on the M4 Motorway at St Marys on Monday morning, creating a bizarre sight for passing traffi c.
The incident happened after the morning peak, meaning potential traffi c gridlock on a day many returned to work after school holidays and the long weekend was avoided.
The crash did cause problems throughout the day however, with one citybound lane closed for several hours and access to the M4 citybound from Mamre Road also blocked.
Police responded to the crash in huge numbers at about 10am. It is understood nobody was seriously injured in the accident, which was cleared by mid-afternoon.

enrith Police are issuing a strong warning to women to keep a very close eye on their drinks when out at a club or party. The warning follows a recent suspected drink-spiking incident reported to police. On Friday, January 27 at 1.30am, police came across a 21-year-old female lying unconscious on the grass area behind the petrol station on Coreen Avenue, Penrith. “The victim was unresponsive and physically shaking when found,” said Penrith Commander, Ben Feszczuk.

Health Minister, Jillian Skinner, blamed human error and said the mistake should never have occurred. “I send my sincere apologies to Mrs Woodbridge for the distress this has caused,” she said. “The account had been incorrectly fi led as ‘unpaid,’ which resulted in a regrettable and unusual set of circumstances.” Ms Skinner said the error was completely separate to the backlog that occurred late last year in the Western Sydney Local Health District, which she said was fi xed promptly.

The Chief Executive of Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, Kay Hyman, spoke with Mrs Woodbridge and apologised on behalf of the Local Health District. “I contacted Mrs Woodbridge as soon as the matter was brought to my attention and apologised, unreservedly, for the distress the mistakes in our Finance Department had caused,” Ms Hyman said. “I have reiterated to my team that the way we care for our patients and their families is the most important thing we do and it is what we are judged by. When we get that wrong, it impacts on real people and has a real effect on them. We will not be making these sorts of mistakes again.”

“The victim informed police that she had only consumed a minimal number of alcoholic drinks during the evening, [which was] corroborated by the victim’s two friends that she was with during the evening. “It is the small amount of alcohol consumed and her physical state at the time of being found that led police to believe that her drinks may have been spiked.” Police believe the 21-year-old attended a nearby hotel on Castlereagh Road with two friends. Anyone with information about the drink spiking incident should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Bucking the trend Record employment results
U
nemployment figures across New South Wales may be peaking under pressure from the European fi nancial crisis, but in St Marys, the Skilling and Employment Centre is trending against the data. The centre, an initiative of developer Lend Lease, has recently reported record employment results with 93 per cent of its members fi nding jobs since the centre opened in 2005. The centre was established to address the skills needs identifi ed in the labour market surrounding the St Marys residential development, particularly in the trades and services industries. It acts as a facilitator between local jobseekers and employers by coordinating relevant vocational training and job-search services. “Usually job seekers come into the Centre to update their resume, attend a workshop on ‘How to Find Work in Diffi cult Times’ or

Free microchip to help protect your pet If you have a cherished pet, keep them safe with free microchipping on 15 March. Microchipping can make all the difference if your pet becomes lost, allowing our rangers to easily return them home. It’s also required by law for cats and dogs. To do your pet even more favours, get their health checked by a vet on the day. You can also consult an animal trainer for behavioural information and training tips. Benefit from the free microchipping by bringing your pet to St Clair Autumnleaf Neighbourhood Centre between 10am and 2pm. For more details contact our Animal Services team on 4732 7543. Council’s Companion Animal Officers wish to remind residents that keeping a stray animal can result in fines of up to $550. If you do find a lost pet, contact The Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter on 4560 4644.

Bag theft: Robbery following fight
Assault: 20-year-old attacked
Police are investigating the assault of a 20-year-old man from Cranebrook. About 2.20am on Saturday, January 28, the victim drove past another car that was stopped by the police and made gestures at the group inside the car. When the victim stopped his car on Memorial Ave, Penrith, he was approached by the same group. The group allegedly beat his car with a metal rod, before punching the victim in the face. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Bad behaviour: Police have last laugh
A 20-year-old man has received an infringement notice for offensive behaviour. About 2am, police were conducting an RBT on Mulgoa Road when they stopped a vehicle for a breath test. A
young woman was tackled to the ground and indecently assaulted in a frightening incident at St Marys last weekend. And police say a silver coloured four-wheel-drive holds the key to their investigation into the incident. The 20-year-old woman was walking through a reserve at the intersection of King and Stapleton Streets in St Marys at about
8.40pm last Saturday when a man approached her and asked for the time. “The woman told the man the time, and he then tackled her to the ground and indecently assaulted her,” police said in a statement. “The man then ran to a silver coloured four-wheel-drive, which was parked on King Street. No registration number was obtained. “The woman was uninjured and
reported the incident to St Marys Police.” The man has been described as having a tanned complexion, about 165cm tall, of a chubby build, with a shaved head. At the time he was wearing a white t-shirt with a red design and shorts. Anyone who witnessed the incident or should contact St Marys Police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Who’s selling? Dick is: What it means for jobs in Penrith CASSANDRA O CONNOR
L
ocal jobs may be at risk after Woolworths announced on Tuesday that the Dick Smith consumer electronics brand will be divested. After conducting a strategic review into the chain in November 2011, the Woolworths group decided that it was in the best interest of the company to close up to 100 underperforming stores in the next two years before selling the brand.
Woolworths Limited CEO, Grant O’Brien, said that it was in the interest of both companies to separate from the brand. “Dick Smith is an iconic specialty consumer electronics brand, with a strong team and its own leading online presence. However we believe that separating this speciality model from Woolworths is now the best option for the future of both businesses,” Mr O’Brien said. The Weekender can confi rm that the Dick Smith Powerhouse on Mulgoa Road will be remaining open but the future of the Westfi eld store has not been decided.

DOUG RICHARDS AND DAVID YAMIN ARE FED UP WITH SPEEDING DRIVERS
Dire warning: Residents say accident is waiting to happen EMILY CRANE
R
esidents of Ridgetop Drive in Glenmore Park say it is only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured as a result of speeding drivers. For neighbours, David Yamin and Doug Richards, it is getting increasingly harder to even back out of their driveways – their houses are situated so close to a bend that it’s diffi cult to spot drivers coming around the corner. “I get really nervous when I’m trying to reverse out of my driveway that someone
will come around and collect me,” Mr Richards said. Residents have notifi ed Penrith City Council and Penrith Police about the issue, but the reckless driving continues. Mr Richards said he was so frustrated with the speeding that he has taken to timing some of the drivers. “I’ve stood out on the driveway on occasions to time them from a few driveways down until they get to mine – some were going 60, 70 and even 80 kilometres over in a 50 zone,” he said. Councillor Prue Guillaume said Council conducted an investigation into the street in 2010, but not enough people were speeding to put speed humps in.

ePrint is narrowing the divide HP Australia has extended heart-felt gratitude to all families and supporters of the HP eSmiles project, which raised $75,000 for Ronald McDonald houses across Australia and New Zealand. The project brought hundreds of smiles via emailed well wishes to the faces of the families of hospitalised children staying at Ronald McDonald Houses (RMH) in the lead up to the 2011 holiday season using HP’s ePrint technology. To facilitate the project, an HP ePrinter was installed in the common areas of 10 Ronald McDonald Houses in both Australia and New Zealand so that anyone could email a free get-well “eSMILE” to children and families staying in the House in their local area. Using the ePrint technology, which allows you to print from any internet-connected device from virtually anywhere, all well wishes emailed to the eSMILES customised email address were automatically printed out in the common room and posted up on the wall for all children and families to see. “We were so excited to partner with HP and use their ePrint technology,” said Malcolm Coutts, CEO, Ronald McDonald House Charities. “eSMILES were completely free to send and could take the form of a personalised photo card, a get well letter, get well drawings and cartoons, photos or funny jokes to make the kids laugh. “Seeing the eSMILES come through from all the people thinking of them was priceless to these families and it was such a joy to see the messages of hope and joy that people sent through.” Richard Bailey, Vice President, Imaging

and Printing Group, HP South Pacific said: “ePrint is ideal for busy families on the go. I use this technology at home all the time with my family, it lets us create and share together. “My children could be anywhere in the world, take photos on their smartphones and ePrint them instantly home for us to see where they are at and for us to stick on the
fridge.” ePrint technology is about narrowing the divide between the physical and virtual world and enhancing the lives of people using HP printing technology, and the businesses they support. “ePrint also boosts productivity of professionals, enabling sales quotes for example, to be ePrinted to customer’s printer
on the spot, without having to return to the office,” Mr Bailey said. “We’re on the move and our technology needs to move with us, ahead of us, towards the future of business.” Whether you’re juggling an action-packed family life or looking to increase workforce performance, ePrint delivers mobility and flexibility for printing on the go.

GOING ONLINE?
Michael Todd: How to maintain your enthusiasm
The things you need to know before putting your business online
L
ocal business, A Website That Works For You, has seen a burst in local business throughout January – small businesses are out to impress and rushing to get their names online. “It’s great to see people taking action, but shooting for the stars with your hands behind your back and a blindfold on will only get you so far,” said Tim Williams, founder of the group. A key ingredient to any online success is “taking action” but just as important, a bit of planning is needed and there are a few things you need know before jumping into your new website for 2012. Mr Williams has several tips: 1. What are my potential customers actually searching for?
A sales driven website can help drive business but it’s important to know what your potential customers are searching for fi rst. Tools such as the “Google Keyword Tool” can show you roughly how many people each month are searching for the specifi c service or product you offer. You can also use this to get an indication of how fierce the competition is for these specific searches. 2. When people fi nd my website, what do I want them to do? Identify whether you want your visitors to purchase a product online or contact you for more information or a quote. Your website should be a sales funnel that is designed to convert the maximum number of visitors into sales or enquiries so you get more
bang for your buck! If your website isn’t created with a sales funnel in mind, don’t expect to sit back and sip tea as the sales and leads pour in! 3. How am I going to get my website in front of potential customers when it’s ready? When a website is launched, it doesn’t instantly get put at the top of Google for the search terms you need it to. There is fierce competition out there and ranking highly in the organic listings takes time… So you may need to get creative here. To fi nd out everything in step-by-step detail, A Website That Works For You has put together a free website advice pack available for small businesses. Visit www.freeewebsiteadvicepack. com.au.

The team at the Luke Priddis Foundation are also hoping to add another NRL Western Sydney Grand Final Breakfast to their 2012 calendar and are already planning their annual Walk for Autism, an ASD Community Forum, and a special race day fundraiser to be held at Hawkesbury Race Track in August. There are also plans to launch an
exciting new membership program along with their own ASD Provider Panel. However, all of these services do come at a price with the Foundation receiving only very limited government funding. “Unfortunately fundraising is a constant necessity for the organisation and there are many services and programs that we would like to be offering the ASD community that we simply can’t due to lack of funds,” Luke Priddis said. Late payers SMEs. The number of bills being paid severely late by Australian businesses has hit a one-year high, rising almost 30 per cent in the December quarter, according to new research from credit analyst fi rm Dun & Bradstreet. Small businesses, with between one and five employees, now wait an average of 51.3 days for payment. If this sounds familiar and you’re struggling to manage cash flow as a result, there are strategies to keep insolvency at bay. First, talk to your lender about fi nancial hardship if you’re struggling to meet repayments on business loans or credit cards. Second, don’t let an overdue bill drag on – the longer it falls overdue, the harder it is to be paid. Remind customers of the consequences of late payment and if this fails you can threaten legal action with the assistance of a debt collection agency. Although, this is often an expense small business can’t aff ord and success is not guaranteed. Finally, safe guarding against late payers is vital. Do a thorough credit check on new customers – websites such as CreditorWatch.com.au, which name those who don’t pay bills, may also be useful to help weed out potential debtors. Feel the Fear
Enthusiasm
I
love this quote: “Faith doesn’t mean the absence of fear. It means having the energy to go ahead, right alongside the fear” – Sharon Salzberg. For me it epitomises the way women in business should tackle the challenges that come with running an enterprise. In the fi rst place, running a successful business requires an element of faith. Faith in your abilities, faith that you can go the distance and faith that you are heading in the right direction. But the very nature of faith is that it will nearly always be coupled with fear or doubt. Can I do all the things I set out to do? Are the risks too great? And this quote answers those questions beautifully: “The goal is not to rid yourself of fear or doubt. The goal is not to pretend you don’t feel fear. The goal is to use the fear to energise you”. Fear creates adrenalin and you can harness that fear to move forward, despite your self-doubt. There will always be risks that you need to weigh up – a risk management strategy is still vital. But having assessed the risks, fear will nearly always accompany various stages and events in your business. Let the fear drive you to achieve your goals and exceed your expectations. If you have feedback for Michelle, send an email to news@westernweekender.com.au or give us a call on 4722 2998. Michelle Gice is the founder of www.dotcomwomen.com.au
M
aintaining enthusiasm can be tough for all of us, particularly on those days when it just doesn’t seem to be happening and things just keep going wrong. We all have those days, and we all have a little trouble staying positive at times. Four techniques I use are: • Reading something motivational. Like someone who really had things to complain about but didn’t. • Surround yourself with positive people. • Pull out those jobs that I really enjoy doing and just work on those for the day. • Escape for a bit like go to the movies or buy something new. It’s not very responsible, but it sure makes me feel better. The change starts with attitude. Without the proper mindset you will never advance or live up to your full potential. A sense of enthusiasm can improve the quality of the work that is done. I am very lucky, I believe I was born with a large share of optimism. But whilst it comes naturally, it is tested often. We are only human, we have good days and bad days, but as long as the good outweigh the bad then you’re doing alright. I am also a fi rm believer in maintaining your health to maintain your enthusiasm. You don’t have to be a health fanatic, but eating well and doing exercise can help a lot. The thing about bad luck and things not going your way is that most of the time it’s only temporary. So keep your head up, good times are often just around the corner. xpiry dates may be banned on gift cards following an inquiry into their terms and conditions. Member for Lindsay, David Bradbury, has launched a review into the terms and conditions of gift cards after a number of complaints were lodged with consumer watchdogs. “The gift card market continues to grow and many local residents would have received at least one at Christmas time,”
Mr Bradbury said. “While they are a simple gift choice and give recipients the flexibility to choose the gift they want, gift cards can also be subject to terms and conditions, which consumers need to ensure they read and understand. “There are real concerns about the fairness of situations where a family member or friend has paid money that cannot be redeemed for some reason, whether that be an arbitrary expiry date or a store refusing to allow a gift card holder to make a purchase below a certain amount of money.”

It is a malicious infection mainly picked up from travelling overseas, or having contact with someone who has travelled which is often only detected in specialised testing. This infection has been shown to release a neuronal toxin, affecting the nervous system physically and mentally. It has not often been associated with mental health conditions even though studies are available showing its impact on the brain. Trying to impress others with your diligence will be an uphill struggle, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make the effort, it’s just others will seem to have all the accolades you would like. Your friends, however, will give you insights on how to deal with the situation. The Full Moon on the 7th sees you analysing one of your associations. Venus in Aries on the 9th dials up the heat in your love life!
Find out why!
One single underlying issue can cause all of these symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause feelings of anger. Palpitations, excessive heat in the body, tingling in the hands or feet, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and lack of concentration, can also be present. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, years or even decades. You may suffer just a few of the above symptoms or perhaps all of them.
32
Mars Retrograde Virgo - Be wary of losing your temper, being hypercritical and tactless. Everyone will be blurting out whatever is on their mind, not with the intent of hurting anyone, but simply because the impulse will get the better of them.
be transmitted from, and Australians travel there often for their holidays, so imagine the amount of people coming back who could be infected and how it can be passed on quite easily through schools, day care centres, or places of work.
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
It’s a fairly mixed-up month, emotionally speaking, and you may have a suspicion about a lover or friend’s motives – be careful of how you handle the situation as whatever you say will come out wrong. On the career front, recognition will be forthcoming for past efforts and your future prospects will be considerably boosted. The Full Moon on the 7th indicates that tension is likely in your home and will be caused by older members of the family.
Fortunately it is quite easy to address, and most symptoms are relieved as soon as the infection has been eradicated. I have seen patients who have suffered depression for four decades, and after treatment for one month have improved out of sight. Other patients have shown improvement after just one week of treatment.
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
Other people will be landing you with unwanted problems and you will have to put your foot down to prevent yourself from being pushed around or used. Venus from the 10th gives you the power to soldier on, in turn, this will put you in line for a raise. The Full Moon on the 7th throws your financial affairs into confusion, so check your facts. The New Moon on the 21st indicates that you will able to solve career problems to everyone’s satisfaction.
Treating bacterial infections is just one aspect of how we treat mental health conditions and weight loss. The treatments used at Informed Health Nutritional Wellbeing Centre have been proven with testing to improve the brain function greatly, without the help of medication.
CANCER
JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
“I sought help from Fiona to combat long term depression. A combination of change in diet and introduction of nutritional supplements saw an immediate change in my mood, energy levels and motivation. Fiona was clear and concise in her advice and made herself available for assistance and advice at all times. I would happily recommend Informed Health to anyone.”
Guard against a tendency to be hasty and slow down whilst driving or operating machinery, as minor accidents and injuries are likely. You are in a rather rebellious mood and any restrictions to your actions will be met with hostility! Remember to use a measure of tact and diplomacy to get what you want out of others. From the 15th onwards is a good time to travel, or to take up an interest in spiritual matters. The Full Moon on the 7th warns you to be prepared for unexpected expenses.
LEO
Mark, 32, Penrith
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
You are being plagued with joint financial problems, so it may be a good idea to review the way you and your partner deal with money. The Full Moon falls directly in Leo on the 7th – be careful of being unreasonable as this will only lead to confrontations. Venus moves into your 9th house from the 10th filling you with vitality and enthusiasm. Your sporting interests and creative talents receive a welcome boost. The New Moon on the 21st is a positive time.
“With Fiona’s support, I’ve so far lost 60kg in the past 9 months, every day getting closer to my goal weight. Fiona keeps a close eye on my progress and quickly makes changes to my program when they’re needed to make sure that I’m not hungry, bored or craving sugar.” John Scerri, Cambridge Park, NSW

The harsh aspect between Mars and the Sun warns against impulsive actions. These two fiery planets urge you into an aggressive mood that’s too hot to handle. The Full Moon on the 7th warns that any relationship or family difficulties will erupt into a furious quarrel if you don’t exercise self-control. Tempers are too quick for comfort, so try to slow down and to think before you speak. The New Moon in Pisces on the 21st indicates that you will have the ability to impress others and to earn the respect.

LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Your emotions will be close to the surface, making you feel terribly angry or anxious. The best way to deal with this is to focus on improving your fitness. A few early nights, and a readiness to give up bad habits will work wonders. The Full Moon on the 7th indicates an irritable atmosphere amongst loved ones, try to restrain your tongue, a tactless remark could have dire consequences!
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Misunderstandings are likely with friends, the motto you need to remember is ‘you can’t please all of the people all of the time’. Certain associates are determined to bring you down a peg or two. Don’t let envy or jealousy upset you. The Full Moon on the 7th is a time to prove how efficient and confident you are by remaining serene when colleagues and clients get nasty. The New Moon on the 21st sees you in line for a bonus or pay rise if you play your cards right.
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Chaos is likely at work and remaining focused on the task at hand will be difficult. It seems whatever you tackle is plagued by confusion or set-backs. Prioritise your tasks and you can’t go wrong. The Full Moon on the 7th is not the ideal time to travel as delays of all types will hinder your progress. Also, a friend or colleague is determined to give you a rough ride, perhaps you have been inconsiderate. The New Moon (21st) sees you coming up with a bright idea.
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
You can be at one with your partner and children or you can choose to make life difficult for both. Your desire for control causes more problems than anything else in your relationships. You need to focus on creating compromises and outcomes where both of you win. The Full Moon on the 7th is not a day to break any laws or take chances with your money. The New Moon on the 21st falls in your communication sector, this sees your phone being red hot and your computer overloaded.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
As Mars ploughs backwards through Virgo, one simmering spat could reach boiling point. You need to be careful of making mountains out of molehills! It’s better to settle this dispute sensibly. The Full Moon on the 7th sees complications in both your love life and business partnerships. If you are trying to clinch a deal you are better off postponing signing on the dotted line. It is always better to get it right than do it quickly. The New Moon on the 21st brings good news.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Mars Retrograde is having a direct effect on your relationships, if you are convinced that one or two individuals no longer have a place in your life, ditch them and move on. However, be careful of souring really good relationships by being judgmental. The Full Moon on the 7th sees some unwelcome nasty gossip at work about a colleague and, as you hate injustice, you will make it clear that you don’t want to get involved. The New Moon on the 21st gives a boost to your self-confidence.

KEEPING FIT
by Susan Garrad
by David Stein
Start with the small things
How do I keep motivated? Q. My New Year’s resolutions to eat better and do more exercise are already falling by the wayside. Any advice on keeping motivated? Traditionally many people vow to make New Year’s goals centred on their health and happiness. Come March most forget that important goal. Why do these positive aspirations float away? Lack of time, stress, falling back into routines, a sense of failure – all common reasons. You want to make that health goal stick, but how do you do it? Change the Language: When planning dinner or discussing plans, plan around your resolution. Example: “Let’s meet at 6:30pm after I get back from the gym” or “What vegetable should we have for dinner?” and “I will shower, meditate for five minutes and eat breakfast.” Habitually adding your resolution to daily planning makes it a reality, tell yourself verbally it is already part of your lifestyle and it will happen more naturally. Become informed: Research your goals. Choose a few resources to consult – a few websites, maybe a book, and consult with a professional. We all know exercise is good, but what are the true benefits? How far is walking 10 blocks? Do you have time at lunch? Can the kids join? Visualise change with variety: It is known that after seeing that yellow sticky note a few times your brain adapts to acknowledging its presence and you ignore
T
hanks to the people for commenting on the TV column, it’s great to hear the positive stories and ideas. Shane and Cornelia wrote they don’t even own a TV yet still manage to function. If you’re trying the week of no TV, write and let me know how it goes. Th is week I had two people come in who have been on the diet roller coaster including the ubiquitous shake diets. What is it with these shakes! They’re a form of VLCD – Very Low Calorie Diet. One of the clients said it was made by a pharmacist so thought it had to be healthy. I asked them did they know of some other pillars of healthy nutrition pharmacists have given us? I wouldn’t tell people which medications to have because I haven’t studied medicine. So should someone who hasn’t studied nutrition start giving diet advice? If you look what’s actually in them it’s basically some powdered milk (whey) or possibly soy with some sugar and a vitamin tablet crushed in. Sometimes there is a magical ingredient for marketing, like some berry extract to make you feel full or maybe the extract of some Amazonian butterfl y tears that ‘studies have shown’ help lose weight. Lots of the weight you lose on a VLCD diet is muscle mass. The more muscle
it. To curb this desensitisation, switch up the cues. Every month write that note on a diff erent coloured piece of paper and change the location. By doing this, you keep the resolution fresh. A lapse is not failure: Success with behaviour change does not happen magically. Realising your resolution comes from building habits. It’s a bigger picture than that time you missed the gym. Falling behind on going to the gym, or taking that time to meditate is not failure.

you have the more calories you burn, even at rest! Why do you think shake diets don’t encourage doing any weight training or check fat percentage loss? They only check overall weight loss. So when you lose 10kgs you think I don’t need the shakes, you go back to eating what you’re used to, but now have less muscle to burn the calories up, so you put the weight back on quicker and maybe even more than you started at. Pour that coloured, processed powder out on a plate next to a green organic salad with some bright red tomatoes chopped in – even my two-year-old will pick the nutritionally complete one. I like to say, you get healthy to lose weight, not lose weight to get healthy.

Your guide to accessories
C
lothes tend to be the most central part of an outfi t – the colours that you choose and the prints that you wear determine the look you pull off. Prints or no prints, colour or no colour, accessories often play a more important role in the making of an outfi t. A common mistake that we generally make is to regard accessories as jewellery only. In reality, this is far from the truth – the range of accessories begins with jewellery and moves to belts, watches, feathers in our hair etc. Accessories are anything that we can use to complement an outfi t. I am a sucker for accessories, I own more than I can handle but I have a really hard time choosing which ones to wear with what outfi t! The idea of accessorising can be daunting – there are so many ‘things’ to choose from that have the potential to make or break an outfi t. Accessories are made to complement clothing but this doesn’t mean that we always
wear them correctly, how do we get accessories right? 1. When you want an accessory to stand out, wear it so it is alone. I wear a ring that was given to me by someone special, it is small but beautiful and I found that if I wore no accessories on my arms, the ring stood out. 2. Use accessories to complement an outfi t, not to match it. There is nothing worse than wearing a red dress with red bangles, red earrings, red shoes and a red bag – it gets overwhelming and is not a good look. Wear contrasting colours instead. If you don’t want to contrast, choose a component of the outfi t that you wish to stand out like a splash of pink on your shoes and matching accessories. 3. Useful accessories, like belts, handbags and watches, can be used to enhance an outfi t as well. If you have an hourglass figure, wear a colourful belt around your waist.
I
was interested to read that a recent Megatrends report* indicates that customer service is expected to be the deciding factor for businesses over the coming years. The only surprise in this for me is that it is still news to some people! In a world where customers are increasingly savvy about how they spend their money, and in a country where people have switched from being spenders to savers, it’s the customer service experience that can make or break you. Obviously businesses need to be competitive on price, but offering your customers a service experience that exceeds their expectations will put you at the top of their mind next time they’re looking for that same service. That doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to be best friends with all of your customers or force yourself in to their lives, it simply means delivering the service they want in a way they want it – in the best possible way. For us, some customers simply want an Internet Banking platform that gives them the freedom and convenience to manage their money on the go, without ever having to come in to a branch. Some customers want to know that they can give me a call every six months and I’ll know who they are and what their banking needs are, and can help them with their query quickly and easily. And for some customers, particularly small business owners, having more regular contact makes sense as it means I’m always up to speed with what they’re up to and can almost pre-empt their banking needs. It’s horses for courses but there is one constant – accessibility. If I don’t answer my phone or my staff shut the doors to the branch, I would very quickly go out of business. I need to make sure I’m available for my customers when, where and how it suits them.

THE PHARMACIST SAYS by Martin Cominotto
Head lice season
The high arched foot few weeks ago we had a look at the flat foot and it’s effect on foot posture and all the problems that can be associated with the foot type. From a postural perspective, the opposite foot type is that of the high arched foot or cavoid foot type. The cavoid foot type displays an arch on the inside (medial side) aspect of the foot that is very high, a heel that seems to roll out rather than in and often toes that are retracted, similar to clawed toes. The high arched foot is often more rigid in it’s mechanics as opposed to the floppy or flexible flat foot. Th is means that there is a lot more shock generated into the foot and lower limb and often results in injuries such as stress fracture or fat pad injuries under the heel bone. Although the fi rst instinct of how to deal with a cavoid foot type is to add cushioning,

that’s not always the best treatment option. Often this foot type has high-pressure areas that cause pain through callus formation. The use of orthotics can reduce the pressure through redistributing the surface area on the bottom of the foot. This will unload the painful areas and stabilise the foot and ankle, reducing the risk of major injury. It is very important for this foot type to see a podiatrist to establish the best method of treatment, rather than use off the shelf arch supports. Footwear can also be a useful tool in assisting this foot type. Again, see the podiatrist or visit a specialist shoe store for advice on the best shoes. Regular treatment can be offered by a qualifi ed podiatrist for instant relief of the high level of callus and corns that often result from the cavoid foot type.

ith school back this week, it’s important to be aware of head lice. The recent rain and hot weather is the type of environment lice love, so it’s perfect conditions for an outbreak. Head lice are tiny insects, about the size of a sesame seed, that live in the hair near the scalp. The lice cannot fly or jump, but crawl very quickly and due to how kids play, primary schools experience regular infestations. They spread through close contact, as well as through sharing of hats and brushes. Head lice can only live on human heads and feed off blood under the scalp. Th is feeding is what can cause itchiness and irritation, but besides this they are completely harmless. Not everyone experiences itching, so head lice can be hard to detect. The best way to know if your child has head lice is to use a fi ne-tooth comb on wet hair and look for the eggs and lice themselves. The treatment of head lice can be very frustrating. As head lice are easily spread, your child can be treated and rid of lice, only to be re-infested again. It is important to kill the lice and eggs, as well as take preventive steps. There are a number of treatments available, using both insecticides and natural herbal treatments. Personally, I recommend the herbal-
based treatments as they use natural oils that do not dry the scalp and hair. Use the treatments on dry hair. When hair becomes wet, the lice shield themselves and can survive. However, they can only protect themselves for around 20 minutes and as the natural treatments are safe, you can leave them in longer than this. The dead eggs can stay stuck to the hair for a long time so you will need to remove them after treatment with a fi netooth comb. To reinfest, you only need a few eggs out of thousands to survive, so I recommend you treat again after seven and 14 days.

ometimes it helps to state the obvious. There was some information printed on a clothing tag for a pair of shorts made in China. After the usual care instructions about ironing it also had, “Do not wash with horses”. That seems like good advice! But it’s also pretty obvious – don’t wash your shorts with horses!!! It should also be obvious that Christianity begins with God. Christianity is about God and getting to know him through his Son, Jesus Christ. That’s easy to say, Christianity is about God, but who is God? What is God like? How do you think about God? The Bible has some great statements about God to help us understand what God is like. For example in the last book of the Bible, Revelation we read; “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” God is indeed the loving ruler and creator of this world. The important question is how are you going to respond to this God who is worthy to receive glory and honour? It would be a tragedy if you chose to ignore him, if you chose to ignore the loving creator of this world who wants you to seek him and know him and enjoy friendship with him through his Son, Jesus. The start of a new year is always a good

time to make resolutions and changes. Why not decide that from this time on, you will live giving God the honour that belongs to him as the loving creator of this world?

REGISTRATION DAYS for 2012 At PEPPERTREE RESERVE (cnr Peppertree & Swallow Drive Erskine Park) Saturday February 4th and 11th Sunday February 5th 10.00am to 3.00pm
Our most recent Harness Race Meeting was Friday 27th January and a fair crowd turned out despite the threatening weather conditions. Thankfully our future Meetings will revert back to our usual Thursday night sequence and this will give our patrons a continuity of Thursday night fi xtures. The races on Friday afternoon favoured the favourite backers with fi ve of the eight races going to the best backed runners. The racetrack was in perfect condition even after the recent spate of frequent daily showers. Local driver Scot Adams driving for his trainer brother Ross Adams was successful in race four with Snap to It ($2.20). After getting away with some very easy early quarters he held off The Frogster in the sprint home to the judge.

First grade: Penrith batting first on a very slow wicket because the rain during the week batted very well declaring at 7 for 320 off 84 overs. Jarrod Silk was outstanding scoring a brilliant 126 runs. In a very aggressive innings veteran Kevin Geyer with 67, a feature of the partnership with Jarrod Silk, was brilliant running between wickets. Campbelltown resumed batting on Sunday morning at 0 for 7. At tea time the visitors were 8 for 192. However, a great fi ght back enabled Campbelltown to bat to stumps to draw the match. Pat Jackson with 5 for 81 and Kevin Geyer 3 for 28 were the best bowlers. Second grade: Penrith lost the toss and were sent into bat on a very diffi cult wicket and were dismissed for 71. Campbelltown declared at 9 for 138 and batting a second time Penrith were dismissed for 182. Jarryd
Lorraine Pozza Another local driver to get the money was Glen McElhinney, driving Leisa Beryl ($6.00) Glen was able to come out quickly from barrier fi ve and take the lead and stay in front for the full trip. Probably the best performance on the day was put up by Tallyho Bromac($1.70) Mitchell Reese. Since coming from Victoria with good form he has now won his last two starts in NSW and going on the way he has won there are more wins in store for him. One that showed up for the future was Moonlight Studleigh (Gavin Fitzpatrick). Having his second run from a long spell he came from the rear of the fi eld and was forced to travel very wide. He just failed to catch the favourite Ambush Prince who had been in front all the way from barrier one. See you at the Paceway on Thursday.
Century Gordon with 75 and Ben Betros 30 were the best of the batsman. Requiring 118 for an outright win; Campbelltown had an easy win only losing three wickets in the run chase. Th ird grade: No play at Cook Park because of the wet wicket. Fourth grade: Campbelltown batting first scored 198. Off spinner Jake Wholohan with 5 for 60 and opening bowler Michael Collins with 3 for 30 were outstanding. Penrith in reply scored 7 for 201. Josh Betros with a very good innings of 60 enabled Penrith to win the match. Fifth grade: No play because of the condition of the wicket. Congratulations to Cameron Weir and Jake Wholohan who have been selected to represent NSW in the under 15 All Schools carnival in Hobart.

fter sitting in a buggy, watching his father play golf, Reece Pospishil decided to give it a go and has developed a talent that has his family lost for words. Reece, 11, fi rst picked up a golf club at the age of nine and since then has begun training with the cadets at Penrith Golf Club, once a fortnight, in the hopes of being entered in the ‘juniors’ competition.
Last Tuesday, January 24, Reece won the 2012 cadet championship at Penrith Golf Course. “Th is is the second year in a row that Reece has won the cadet championship and had his name on the trophy,” said proud father, Steve. In addition to his golf training, Reece trains in Little Athletics once a week and excels in sport at school. With only two years of experience and a 260m drive up his sleeve, it seems as though Reece, at only 11 years of age, has a big future in golf ahead of him.

espite still being a Western Australian at heart, Kynan Maley has lived in Penrith for more 10 years whist he follows his dreams to go to the London Olympics. “I moved to Penrith when the Whitewater Stadium was built because it is a rare opportunity to have access to a world class facility like the one in Penrith,” Maley said.
Maley made his mark internationally back in 2003 when he secured Australia’s C1 spot at the Athens Olympics, qualifying for the C1 place after fi nishing 9th. The talented 30-year-old produced his best result at the 2005 World Championships, fi nishing 7th in the men’s C1 fi nal, while his powerful and explosive action lead him to winning bronze at the 2005 Freestyle Championships. After a shoulder injury left him in doubt for Beijing, he is looking to fi nally compete at the Olympics to complete a track record of national and international placings.

fter taking out a silver medal at the Australian Open and finishing ninth at the World Cup in Tacen, Slovenia, Will Forsythe is well on his way to securing his air ticket to the London Olympics. He has been ranked number one in Australia for the men’s K1 slalom kayaking for the past three years and was the Australian team captain in 2011.
“I was national champion from about 13 to 18-years but then it took a little while to adjust to the high level of competition in the seniors division,” Forsythe said. After the 2011 World Championships, Forsythe had a callus removed from his hand that had become disfi gured from paddling, but he said preparation for the upcoming trials was nonetheless going well. “In the next couple of months I’ve got to get fitter, stronger – everything goes in the back seat prior to the Olympic Selections,” he said.

he may have only just finished high school, but Leonay local, Jessica Fox, has the success and guidance of her parents as she heads to the Olympic selections in February for canoeing and kayaking. Fox is the daughter of Olympic kayakers, Richard – a five time World Champion for Great Britain, and Myriam – who won an Olympic bronze medal and two World
Championship titles for France. In 2005 she picked up a paddle and hasn’t looked back. “Preparing for the Olympics selections will be challenging as there is only one position for a field of very strong competitors. I know I am only 17 and many of the other girls will have years of experience, but my mum is my coach and I am hoping to draw on her experience and use it to my advantage,” Fox said. The modest teen is predicted to take out the K1 position that she secured for Australia in the qualifi cation quota in 2011.

t age 24, Robin Jeffery is ever so close to fulfi lling his life long dream – to represent Australia in canoeing at the Olympics. Jeffery, who currently lives in Emu Heights to train daily at the Whitewater Stadium, moved from Perth to pursue his dream. “I started canoeing when I was eightyears-old because I had a bad knee and
never looked back,” Jeffery said. But starting a new sport was not without its ups and downs. “When I fi rst started paddling there was one time when the canoe capsized and I was stuck upside down in the boat for about a minute,” he said. Since then, Jeff rey has gone from strength to strength, competing for Australia for the past three years. “It would mean everything to me to be selected for the London Olympics. I have always dreamed of it and in the last six years it has become a real possibility.”

Trial with Ipswich a test as battle for positions begins
A
long season of football will begin for the Penrith Panthers tonight (Friday, February 3) when they travel to Queensland for their first trial of the year against the Ipswich Jets. It’s the fi rst of three trials for the Panthers, who get their fi rst run under new coach Ivan Cleary. Cleary will use the trials to test combinations and fi nalise his desired lineup for Penrith’s round one showdown with Canterbury next month. After tonight’s trial, the Panthers travel to Port Macquarie where they will take on Newcastle on Saturday, February 11 at 7.30pm. Then it’s back home for the pre-season’s biggest test – the ‘battle of the west’ trial against Parramatta at Centrebet Stadium on Friday, February 17 from 8pm. Once the trials are out of the way, the Panthers will launch the 2012 season in style at the EVAN Theatre on Saturday, February 18. Meanwhile, the Western Weekender understands that the Panthers could be poised to announce a major sponsor as early as next week. The club has been looking for a new major partner after its relationship with SANYO came to an end due to a takeover of the electronics giant.
