fter weeks of trials and testing, St Marys may soon be home to Australia’s best pharmacy. Martin’s Chemist at St Marys Village Centre was named as a top three fi nalist for the Australian Pharmacy of the Year on Tuesday. “For us it feels like the Olympics. I was blown away when I was notifi ed, we couldn’t be happier,” said Martin Cominotto, owner of Martin’s Chemist
and columnist for The Western Weekender. The nationwide award is run by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia – the national peak body representing community pharmacies. Martin’s Chemist took out the ‘Innovation in Professional Services’ category, which means the local business is well on its way to being named the top pharmacy at a national conference in March. “We were up against over 5,000 other Australian pharmacies, so it is great to be recognised for the work we do in the community, especially our work with diabetes,” Mr Cominotto said. After a gruelling judging process, Mr Cominotto

said he was optimistic about the results after the judges were impressed with the local pharmacy. “We spent about 48 hours putting together a submission and the Guild picked seven pharmacies to be fi nalists,” he said. “Th ree judges came out and spent three hours in the pharmacy last week and we were incredibly busy that day – I had someone follow me the entire time to see the services we provide and how we interact with customers. It was quite an extensive process.” Mr Cominotto will attend the awards ceremony on the Gold Coast in March.

Is he Barry Backflip?
After almost a year in power, how do you rate the NSW Liberal / Nationals Government?
Or is he simply listening to the community’s needs? The State Opposition is hot under the collar about the Government, but could it be that Barry O’Farrell is simply a Premier who listens to what we have to say?
CASSANDRA O CONNOR
O
ver the past 11 months the NSW Government has earned a reputation for circus tricks, with NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell backfl ipping on issues such as the recently lifted ban on regular unleaded fuel and the solar bonus scheme. Some political commentators have gone so far as to label the Premier as ‘Backdown Barry’. Combined with last year’s debate about whether or not radioactive waste would be dumped at Kemps Creek, Opposition Leader, John Robertson, said Mr O’Farrell’s indecisiveness demonstrated he was losing touch with the families of Penrith. “In front of the cameras, Barry O’Farrell pretends to be on the side of mums and dads – but recent events prove the Premier couldn’t care less about families doing it tough,” Mr Robertson said. “We have only seen backfl ips on banning unleaded petrol and scrapping the solar bonus scheme because the public caught on to the O’Farrell Government’s blatantly unfair policies.” But a spokesperson for Mr O’Farrell defended the government’s track record. “The NSW Liberals and Nationals Government makes no apologies for listening to the community,” a spokesperson said. “We are getting on with the job of delivering the services and infrastructure the people of western Sydney deserve.” Mr O’Farrell said he was determined to do everything possible to assist local families facing increased cost of living pressures.
Steve Bourke: “Even though I generally support Labor, I like Barry O’Farrell but I do think he is being a bit wishy washy. In the past 12 months he seems to be more worried about what people think. It is defi nitely easier to be in Opposition.”
Craig Llyod: “All politicians seem to dance on their feet. The only politician I like is John Howard.”
Llewellyn Judge: “Our trains are still a shambles but I think Barry is entitled to change his mind. Certainly.” What do you think? Tell us by emailing news@westernweekender. com.au or call us on 47222 2998. Tweet us @wwpenrith.

For all your Christmas Decoration needs…
can kick things off this week with some great news for all of you celebrating Valentine’s Day next Tuesday. It seems your relationship may have a better chance of staying strong than you think. We’ve all heard the “statistic” that half of all marriages end in divorce, and you’re a 50/50 chance of sticking it out once you’re married. Well, it’s all an urban legend. It turns out that it’s in fact one in three marriages, not one in two, that end in divorce. I’m looking around the editorial team here at the Weekender as I write this and I see three young women all in long term relationships. Only the self-proclaimed “charming” Nathan Taylor splits the female domination of the newsroom. Tom has put up with Emily for four years, Cass and Dan have passed a similar milestone and Katie and Ryan are well entrenched after two years together. One in three. Very convenient and I’ll keep my opinion to myself on how the statistics will fall in this case. Social analyst Mark McCrindle said this week that marriages are doing better than they have for a long time, with the total number of divorces declining. It seems love is making a comeback. But for those who fall into the “one in three” category, or for those who simply haven’t found Mr or Mrs Right yet, Valentine’s Day is not necessarily a day to celebrate. In fact, the barrage of chocolates and flowers can be diffi cult to escape on February 14. However, before you jump into bed with a carton of chocolate ice cream and the ‘Lifestyle You’ channel (which should be banned), there’s a few options worth trying. I mean, if you’re a slim woman in your 20’s, there’s an overweight bloke in his 40’s searching for you out there – just take a look at the classifi eds section of the daily newspaper. Another option is to jump online, and fi nd the ‘love calculator’. Clearly a scientifi c invention, you simply put your name and the name of your desired lover into the system, and it comes back with a detailed report.

Love is making a comeback

After discovering that I only have a 44 per cent chance of true love with Jennifer Aniston and only 24 per cent with Katherine Heigl, I figured I’d try a few more unlikely combinations. Perhaps surprising is that Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard, if they patched up their differences, have a 76 per cent chance of making it. “Dr Love thinks that a relationship between Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard has a very good chance of being successful, but this doesn’t mean that you don’t have to work on the relationship. Remember that every relationship needs spending time together, talking with each other etc,” the calculator declared. Actually, that’s not too far from the truth. Albert Einstein once said “women marry men hoping they will change. Men marry women hoping they will not. So each is inevitably disappointed.” Love is about so many things – change, dedication, commitment, joy, tears, the list goes on and on. All in all though, it’s about having fun and sharing your journey with someone. Now I know I’m yet to mention my own partner, Stacey, in this love-themed column, but I figure given I treat every day with her like Valentine’s Day, there wasn’t really a need. I’ll pay for that line. Whether you go for all the commercial junk or not, at least spend some time to reflect on Tuesday. Married, in a relationship or single – think about where you’re at and fi nd the happiness in it. And another thing... On page nine this week you will read a story about how public preschool costs in the local area have tripled for one local mother, who was paying $5 per day at Cambridge Park Public School, but is now facing a $15 per day fee. The Government response is that it’s all about bringing public preschools “in line” with the early childhood sector. But there’s good news – Aboriginal families and Commonwealth Health Card Holders will only pay $7 a day. Cold comfort for the single mum in our story. When will we actually start to look after the hard working, ordinary mums and dads out there who deserve a break when it comes to this kind of thing?

Roadside surgery Doctor’s dramatic efforts to save trapped driver
A
CareFlight doctor performed emergency roadside surgery on a trapped driver as Fire & Rescue officers worked to free him at Wallacia last weekend. The driver and two passengers were all transported to hospital after a high-speed single vehicle crash on Bents Basin Road last Sunday, February 5. The accident occurred when the driver of a Holden Commodore lost control and
crashed into a tree. Two of the vehicles’ male occupants managed to escape with the assistance of other motorists, but paramedics and police worked with CareFlight to stabilise the driver who was trapped for 40 minutes. CareFlight landed beside Bents Basin Road at 6pm to allow the crew doctor to initiate treatment for the driver and two passengers. The CareFlight doctor said the driver,
believed to be aged in his 30s, suff ered head, chest, abdominal and arm injuries. After the surgery, the doctor placed the man in an induced coma on a ventilator then administered a blood transfusion before flying the man to Westmead Hospital where he remained in a critical condition on arrival. Ambulance paramedics took the two passengers to Liverpool Hospital suff ering serious injuries.

Delightful Story
It was delightful to see the photo in your paper recently of the Fijian midwives (Assena Lolohea and Kolora Cavukali) who had just completed a six week program at Nepean Hospital. Th ey experienced educational opportunities from the Maternity Department as well as exploration of cultural activities in Penrith. Th is program was established by the Brian Spurrett Foundation in conjunction with the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and the AusAid Pacifi c Midwifery Leadership Program. The program has been established at Liverpool Hospital over many years and it is gratifying that the Midwifery Department at Nepean Hospital has embraced the initiative and shared the concept, and will be part of the ongoing fellowship program. I wish to congratulate the midwives at Nepean Hospital for a successful visit and sharing the vision for safe motherhood. Home Schooling
It is reported that there could be up to 50 thousand children doing home schooling throughout Australia. Th e exact number may never be known as many are not registered with the authorities. Why are so many parents home schooling
their children? Obviously many parents are not happy with the public school system and have opted out. Since Julia stitched up the national school curriculum deal with the States, to have uniformity throughout Australia, the trend to home school will increase. What is it that causes parents to forsake the public school system? Concerned parents see the public schools as change agents and indoctrination centres that promote, along with the three R’s, government spin on a host of issues: climate change, multiculturalism, sex education and the promotion of all kinds of “trendy” ideas to the proliferation of drugs in the schools. The private schools are not much better either as their curriculum is dictated by the State. Governments see home schoolers as a threat in their attempt to indoctrinate children with their propaganda. It is refreshing to see that there are parents who are concerned enough to make the effort to give their children an unbiased education by taking the home schooling route. Jay Nauss, via email . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
U
nless you’ve been living under a rock for the last three months, you’ll be painfully aware of just how bad the weather has been in
Sydney. It seems that every day, without fail, the skies have opened up this summer. And because it’s raining so much, the humidity has been through the roof. On ‘dry’ days, you invariably sweat so much that you shirt ends up drenched anyway. It’s been well documented that this has been our worst summer in 50 years. As a city we are pretty good at whinging about how bad the weather is. I’m as bad as anyone. But truth be told, we are pretty good at whinging full-stop. Last weekend the sun came out and made Saturday pretty spectacular. I was playing lawn bowls with friends, and all we did was complain about the fact it was way too hot. It got me thinking about how the grass is always greener on the other side, and that really, no one is ever happy with their lot in life. There was another example on television on Wednesday morning. Respected political pundit Laurie Oakes was talking about how everyone is complaining about the Australian economy and how tough we are doing. He pointed out that in the grand scheme of things, we currently have one of, if not the strongest economies in the world. Yet
We need to be harder
Much has been said of late regarding the possibility of lighter sentences and the like. I can’t believe we’d even consider this. Australia has become a soft touch, for hardened and petty criminals alike. It’s about time we woke up to ourselves and got hard on all crime. Fred Jackson, via fax
all we do is moan and groan. As a whole I think we are a pretty pessimistic nation. As a general rule of thumb, we like to complain. Some people may be familiar with the term schadenfreude – it is a German word that has no direct translation in English, but it loosely equates to taking delight in the misfortune of others. It’s a surprise we don’t have a word for it, because we practice it quite a lot here in Australia. I don’t envy many things about the USA, but their eternal optimism and celebration of achievement is something I think is quite admirable. It’s something I’d like to see us adopt a bit more of here – we live in the best country in the world, but we can make it even greater and celebrate what we have. Back in the old days (only a few years back) of scorching summers, we used to complain that everyone’s gardens and front lawns died. Now let’s enjoy the fact that our countryside is bright green again, our dams are full, and we aren’t all sunburned and peeling for once.

Fear in our backyard St Clair shooting brings gun crime crisis closer to home CASSANDRA O CONNOR
P
olice are investigating what is believed to have been a targeted attack on a St Clair residence last Sunday. Police were notifi ed by a neighbour at about 11.30am on Sunday that a drive-by shooting had occurred at Melville Road, St Clair around 1.20am earlier that morning. Upon arrival, police attempted to determine the circumstances of the
incident, however the resident of the house was initially uncooperative. Police established a crime scene, which was subsequently examined by forensic specialists. Damage consistent with bullet holes was located in the front of the house but there were no injuries reported. The shooting is the 62nd in Sydney in the past year and St Marys Police along with officers attached to Operation Spartan are investigating the circumstances. “We need to have the community report all crime,” said St Marys Superintendent, Ray Filewood.
“The resident who notifi ed police of the drive-by shooting was diligent and should be commended.” NSW Premier, Barry O’Farrell, said: “The spate of illegal drive-by shootings across this city is unacceptable, and that’s why the NSW Government is fully backing police in their efforts to crack down. No one expects there to be overnight success with this, but police are doing the job.” Anyone with information in relation to the incident is urged to contact St Marys Detectives or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Do you still feel safe in the community knowing that a drive by shooting occurred on Melville Road early on Sunday morning? The Weekender asked Melville Road shop customers what they thought...
Karen: “Crime everywhere is changing, it is terrible. I reckon it is all drug related. I used to live in Mount Druitt and then in Glenmore Park and they were nice suburbs but now the things that go on...” Belinda: “My daughter was hanging over the back fence [on Sunday morning] and said she could see cops in the next street. We decided to walk up there but the road was all blocked off. Traffi c was being diverted from Melville Road onto Hunter Street and we could see the cops surveying the area, looking for evidence of the bullets I suppose. It is usually quiet here though.”

TONY ABBOTT WITH FIONA SCOTT DURING THE 2010 ELECTION CAMPAIGN
Exclusive: Outsider to have tilt at Lindsay pre-selection EMILY CRANE
A
s debate rages over the Kevin Rudd versus Julia Gillard leadership saga, the Liberal Party is preparing to pre-select its candidate for the seat of Lindsay. The Weekender understands a faction of the Liberal Party is attempting to parachute a Baulkham Hills Shire Councillor into Lindsay to take on David Bradbury at next year’s election.
Robyn Preston, who on Wednesday told the Weekender she was unable to comment on internal party matters, unsuccessfully ran for pre-selection for the state seat of Parramatta in 2010. It is understood Ms Preston will be up against two former pre-selection candidates – Margaret Grand and Fiona Scott – on March 9. Ms Scott, a Penrith local, eventually ran against Mr Bradbury in the 2010 election campaign, shaving Labor’s margin considerably and leaving Lindsay on a knife’s edge for the 2013 poll.

Fighting for their kids Parents react to school fee hike EMILY CRANE
S
everal public preschools in the local area are being forced to pay increased school fees this year, but some parents aren’t backing down without a fight. The new schedule of fees for preschools was announced in the State Government’s Budget last year. But parents from Cambridge Park Public School are collecting signatures on a petition to urge the State Government to reduce fees. Cambridge Park Public’s P&C president, Christine Mulholland, said hundreds of signatures have already been collected and parents plan to take the petition into the wider community. “We’ve been paying $5 per day for the preschool, but now its increased to $15,” Ms Mulholland said. “It doesn’t sound like much to some, but for a single mother like myself and with all other prices increasing, it is very diffi cult.” Ms Mulholland, who has a child at Cambridge Park Public and another at the attached preschool, said it was not acceptable. “Not only are they increasing the fees,
but the Department of Education are taking the fees away from the school – the P&C will have to do more fundraising to make up for the costs,” she said. “You would think that you are handing out more money to get money back into the school, but we’re actually not getting any back.” Londonderry MP, Bart Bassett, said the policy was designed to bring public preschools in line with the early childhood sector across NSW. “Preschools in public schools were put in place to ensure that disadvantaged families could access quality pre-school services for their children,” he said. “We want to ensure that this remains in place with fee relief for Aboriginal families and Commonwealth Health Card Holders, who will pay $7 per day. “Principals can also waive fees for children who otherwise would not be able to attend.” The petition organised by Cambridge Park Public’s P&C will be forwarded to local MPs once more signatures are obtained. Help our environment and keep Penrith beautiful by joining Clean Up Australia Day.
On February 14, why not substitute your typical roses or chocolates for your loved one with a best-selling novel or non-fiction read instead? It’s a fitting gift to coincide with the National Year of Reading launch on Valentine’s Day. Considering Council’s ongoing support of children’s literacy through the Paint Penrith REaD program, as adults, we can set the example. T
he owner of a hairdressing salon in St Marys has been charged by local police after setting the premises on fi re. Emergency services rushed to a Queen Street business last Thursday, February 2 after reports of a fi re inside a hairdressing salon about 3.45am. Flames completely destroyed the lower level of the two-storey building, which is believed to have been Edwin’s Hair and Makeup salon. While the blaze was still being fought, police arrested a man of Asian appearance nearby at St Marys Railway Station. The man, who was later revealed as the owner of the hairdressing salon, appeared before Penrith Local Court last week. He was given conditional bail to reappear at the local court on February 17. St Marys Local Area Command Superintendent, Ray Filewood, told the Weekender this week that the fi re wasn’t an ‘insurance job’ as such. “He was the owner, but initial indications show that he just had some bad memories of the place,” Mr Filewood said. Meanwhile, a fi re also caused damage to a shop on the Great Western Highway at Emu Plains this week.

Draft Penrith Accessible Trails Hierarchy Strategy (PATHS) Shared Pathway Network for Urban Areas of Penrith LGA
10
It is widely acknowledged that a well designed, interconnected network of shared pathways across the City will provide the community with a valuable recreational and transport facility. Council has developed the Draft Penrith Accessible Trails Hierarchy Strategy (PATHS) which proposes an integrated network of quality shared-use pathways for cyclists and pedestrians, or ‘trails’, that will improve the range of healthy and sustainable transport options and passive recreational opportunities for residents and visitors to the City of Penrith. The Draft Strategy outlines key trails around the suburbs of our local government area. It is hoped that this Strategy will allow the staged and progressive establishment of an improved pathway and cycleway network for Penrith City. Council invites the general public to have input into the Draft Strategy. The Draft Strategy and associated maps are available at Council’s Penrith and St Marys Offices, and Libraries or available at www.penrithcity. nsw.gov.au.The Draft Strategy is on public exhibition from 20 January to 29 February 2012, and written submissions will be received by the undersigned up to the close of business on 29 February 2012.

THE SCENE AT EMU HEIGHTS LAST WEEK, WHERE HEAVY RAIN CAUSED A LANDSLIDE
SES kept busy Landslide at Emu Heights causes concern
W
hile floods elsewhere in NSW have dominated news coverage over the last week, incidents in Penrith have kept the local State Emergency Service crews busy as well. Last Friday, SES members were called to a landslide in Emu Heights, ironically stumbled across by one of their own. “I just saw this tree sliding down the side of the hill and then the soil went all over the road,” said
Penrith SES Team Leader, Dean Asher, who was driving home from work at the time. “I contacted our headquarters and the local police and coordinated traffi c around the landslide.” Penrith SES also sent two members to Moree to assist with the ongoing flood situation. They were due to return to Penrith yesterday. Meanwhile, a man has been rescued after riding his motorcycle
into a flooded causeway at Shanes Park. About 9pm last Saturday, police and emergency services responded to reports of a motorcyclist stuck in floodwater on Stony Creek Road. Mt Druitt Police were told the 22-year-old man had attempted to cross the flooded causeway despite the road closure signs and closed floodgates. Police and NSW Fire and Rescue waded into the water and used ropes to retrieve him.

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Debate erupted between Penrith Councillors at its meeting on Monday night over State Government plans regarding potential housing in Penrith. The government has asked developers to nominate sites that could pave the way for additional housing, with eight sites identifi ed here in Penrith. “Without investment in infrastructure, these developments would only put more and more pressure on local roads, schools, public transport and health services,” said Labor’s Prue Guillaume. “If these proposals were successful, the M4 would go from a go-slow to a permanent parking lot.” But Liberal Councillor, Tanya Davies, said the Planning Minister, Brad Hazzard, was not interested in developing sites with no existing infrastructure. “We have Penrith City Council being invited to participate in this process, I would think that us as Councillors would be grateful. Th is is a great day where us as a Council can cooperate with the State Government,” Cr Davies said. Penrith City Council has refused a development application from SITA Environmental Solutions in Kemps Creek to extend it operating hours. SITA sought to modify its existing hours to operate until 10pm on weeknights. While the operations would take place internally, Councillors rejected the proposal on the grounds it would have an adverse impact on the amenity of the local area and would most likely result in harmful environmental impacts including light spillages. $450 million worth of investments in Penrith have been approved in the last 12 months, highlighting the area is well and truly open for business. The investments include building new houses, significant renovations on old homes, small business, large national and multinational businesses and infrastructure. “The development applications represent people’s investment and dreams,” said Mayor, Greg Davies.

T
he team from Reach Out Ministries donate countless hours of their time to helping the homeless and needy in the Penrith community, but they may have to reduce their charity work due to low funding. Reach Out Ministries has been up and running for five years now
and, as a branch of Christ Mission Possible, they are dedicated to helping people in the local community. Every day, from handing out food hampers to running breakfasts, the team from Reach Out Ministries drive their van to a different location in the hopes of serving the community. “We normally have a sponsor who helps us with funds like this but we have been unsuccessful so far this year,” said Reach Out
Ministries founder, Michael Fallon. “Registration is due late February and we are hopeful that someone will be able to help us out.” Without registration on the van, Reach Out Ministries will be unable to complete all the good work that they do within the local community. If you are able to help out the local charity, please call Michael on 0407 399 559.

Local volunteer bush fi re brigades at Werrington and Erskine Park received two new replacement Cat 1 crew cab fi re tankers last month. The NSW Rural Fire Service has provided the tankers to the Cumberland Zone, which has its Fire Control Centre in Regentville, in the hopes of better protecting locals within the Penrith area.

Volunteers needed for local Clean Up Australia sites
Celebrate
Valentines Day with the one you love at the Buffet Palace
CASSANDRA O CONNOR
I
t is time to dig up the gardening gloves, stock up on plastic bags and hit the streets. Clean Up Australia Day is on March 4, and this year organisers are reminding the community that it’s not just the median strips that need cleaning. Clean Up Australia’s Chairman and Founder, Ian Kiernan, is confi dent that as businesses throughout Australia become environmentally responsible, the 2012 event will be even bigger. “We’re urging all Australian businesses to work together to clean up the environment or introduce more environmentally friendly policies in their own work environment,” Mr Kiernan said. Schools are also being encouraged to join in the action. “We’re urging all principals and teachers to register their schools to teach their students about taking responsibility for the environment. Our children also have the ability to make their parents take more care of their local parks, play areas, waterways and beaches to preserve them for our children’s future,” he said. Penrith City Council will be supporting eight sites for the annual clean up. Clean up groups will be at Dorothy Radford Reserve St Clair West, between the bridges at Emu Plains, Illawong and Caloola Avenues Kingswood, Koolyangarra Reserve Cranebrook, Nortons basin Mulgoa, Regatta Park Emu Plains and Werrington Lake. he Federal Government’s decision to allow Certifi cates of No Impediment to same sex couples looking to tie the knot overseas is a step in the right direction but not far enough, according to Penrith local, Todd Hammond. Attorney-General, Nicola Roxon, announced last week that from February 1 same sex couples could receive a certificate of no impediment, which is issued to countries that require foreign nationals to provide proof they can legally marry in that country. “Th is important change will allow same-sex couples to take part in overseas marriage ceremonies, and be considered married according to the laws of that country,” Ms Roxon said.
“These certi ficates confirm there is no impediment to a person taking part in a marriage ceremony overseas and considers issues such as whether the person is over 18 or are already married.” However, Todd Hammond and his partner, Alex Utaifeau, who will have been together for four years come April, believe while the government’s initiative is positive, there is still not enough being done to address marriage equality here in Australia. “It is certainly a step in the right direction, however it does also set a double standard – the Australian Government is happy to support overseas same-sex marriages but not on Australian soil,” Mr Hammond said. “It appears that this is really only to stall time on the bigger issue of marriage equality.” What’s your view? Not-for-profit group encourages youth to take better path EMILY CRANE
I
n a bid to get young people off the streets, Robert Turner is encouraging wandering minds to become more creative with his not-for-profit Novel Ideas writing group. Novel Ideas aims to foster an interest in writing so young people avoid ending up in common cycles facing some youth today, including unemployment and violence. “When I was growing up my mother always said ‘idle hands are the devil’s workshop’, meaning if you are busy and focused on something, you won’t be distracted by tagging, bad behaviour or taking drugs,” Mr Turner said. The project is only in its early days here in western Sydney, but Mr Turner successfully started and ran Novel Ideas when he was living in Queensland. “I’m currently running workshops to try and get young people interested. From the information we gather from these workshops, the idea is to create a magazine called MOSAIC with their stories,” Mr Turner said. “All the young people have to do is bring their stories or an interest in writing to the
workshops. I’ve worked with people who have a great story, but they just don’t know where to fi nd the words, so it’s a collaborative process.” Penrith Councillor, John Thain, has already thrown his support behind Novel Ideas – he has offered some of his poetry to be printed in the MOSAIC magazine. “When I ran the workshops in Queensland we had a lot of fiction stories involving werewolves and vampires. But I’ve also had people write about spiritual enlightenment and domestic violence,” Mr Turner said. “When you see a piece of writing with your name on it, there is an immense sense of pride – one of the problems with young people is there isn’t a lot of stuff that they are proud of. “By giving them a voice and actively encouraging them to express themselves in a positive way, we hope to foster a new generation of civic-minded citizens.” Novel Ideas is hosting a workshop in Penrith today (Friday, February 10) in the lower lounge of Penrith Library from 5.30-7.30pm. If you can’t make it down, but would still like to be involved, phone Robert on 0421 973 307.

local bus driver was recognised by the Minister for Transport last week after he displayed “commendable bravery when responding to a car accident while on duty. Oxley Park’s Bobby Bakous freed two people trapped in their overturned vehicle following an accident near Miller Street at Pyrmont in November last year.
Mr Bakous, who works as a Ryde depot bus driver, was operating a Route 501 service from the city to West Ryde when the incident happened. After the event, Mr Bakous continued on his route as though nothing out of the ordinary had occurred, ensuring his passengers reached their destinations. Minister for Transport, Gladys Berejiklian, said the local bus driver’s actions were brought to her attention by a proud passenger who wrote to State Transit to recognise his “unselfi sh act of kindness.

The Luke Priddis Foundation loves to set a good example. And that’s exactly what they are doing in The achievit® Charity Challenge.
The Luke Priddis Foundation was established in 2006 by ex NRL star Luke Priddis and his wife Holly following the diagnosis of their third child with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). As well as supporting many families in need, they also aim to raise the profile of ASD within the community and to educate the public not only about the many challenges faced by children living with ASD but also the valuable and meaningful contributions that these children are still able to offer given the right tools and support.
In the few weeks since they agreed to take the challenge, the team has already lost a combined total of over 10kgs. With the promise of more to come! Perhaps even more importantly they have raised over $1,000 for the Foundation as people have signed up online to sponsor them. PRESERVING THE FAMOUS BENNETT WAGONS: CAROL VOLKIENE AND NORMA THORBURN FROM ST MARYS HISTORICAL SOCIETY, WITH DEPUTY MAYOR, JACKIE GREENOW
Where to put the Wagons? Council to decide where famous Bennett wagons should reside EMILY CRANE
P
enrith City Council put up funding to repair three local authentic Bennett Wagons last year, but next on the agenda is where to house the historic items in the future. Repair works are currently underway on the Bennett Wagons, but the Council is
now investigating funding options to house them in the local area. The industry of wagon building, in particular the Bennett Wagon, made the suburb of St Marys well known all over Australia back in the 1800’s. James Bennett originally opened his wheelwright shop in 1858 opposite Victoria Park. But after almost 100 years and several generations of the Bennett family, the business fi nally closed its doors in 1954.
The current issue of where to display the wagons was raised at a Council meeting on Monday night. “For these historical artefacts to be appreciated they need to be on public display,” a Council report stated. Council has identifi ed several options that could potentially house the Bennett Wagons in St Marys including South Creek Park, Coachman’s Park or Victoria Park. A Council report identifi ed that there
may be the opportunity to accommodate two additional Bennett Wagons at South Creek Park, which is where one of the wagons is already based. The total project cost has been estimated to be just under $170,000. While there are currently no funds set aside in the Council budget, Deputy Mayor Jackie Greenow has asked Council officers to investigate potential funding options to house the wagons.

usinesses beware: household electrical and whitegoods, and housing construction are the most complained about services, according to NSW Fair
Trading. In 2011, Fair Trading received more than 42,500 complaints with 2,611 about electrical, gas and whitegoods and a further 2,476 complaints about problems with housing construction or renovations. Fair Trading Minister, Anthony Roberts, said research showed Australians have long been dissatisfied with outcomes when faced with defective white goods, electronic goods and mobile phones in particular. “Instead of providing redress required by law, some retailers have shirked their obligations
and left consumers to sort out the problem on their own and at their own expense,” he said. “Estimates show consumers incur out-ofpocket costs at just under $1 billion a year in relation to these products.” Also ranking in the top 10 are used cars and motorcycles, automotive repairs, travel and accommodation. Disruptions to the travel industry in 2011 from natural disasters and industrial problems shifted travel and tourism complaints from number six in 2010 to number four in 2011. “People want what they paid for,” Mr Roberts said. “They expect goods or services they purchase to be provided on time and free of defects. “The Australian Consumer Law provides

consumers with guarantees that reinforce these expectations.” But computer and hardware suppliers, as well as professional services have cleaned up their acts. Both categories were featured on the complaints top 10 list in 2010 but have been replaced with property market transactions and solar industry complaints. “Consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law clearly set out consumer rights and responsibilities when something goes wrong, including the right to repair, replacement or refund,” Mr Roberts warned. “Consumers can insist a supplier meets a consumer guarantee, even if the goods are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty.”

eed a cash injection for your small business this year? Filling in the loan application may be relatively straight forward. But there are a number of other variables that will determine whether or not you’re successful in your application, so here are my tips to get you prepared and help you across the line. First, know what you’re worth. Whether you’re a growing fi rm with a stable of staff and equipment, or a smaller start-up with just a few assets, it’s important to be honest about the value of your business – your accountant will help you determine a dollar value for your business. Second, a business loan is more likely to be approved if you can show that you have a clear direction for your company and can communicate that in a written, logical manner. Your business plan should outline your profit and loss and cashfl ow forecasts to reflect your future plans. Th ird, a lender will want to know how soon they will be repaid, also known as an exit strategy, and you’d be wise to offer more than one way out of debt. The fi rst should be the traditional repayment schedule of principal and interest, while a second option may include sale of the business or assets, for instance. Finally, understand that the minor details are often most important when you’re asking a lender to hand over money – so keeping paperwork up to date and responding to queries promptly can go a long way in your favour. id you know there’s more than one type of ‘business woman’? Oh, you did? Unfortunately, many business women encounter attitudes and reactions based on some fairly tired stereotypes: • All business women have children and juggle their business around their children • Business women operate on intuition and ‘gut feelings’ to make decisions • Business women are ‘soft’ when it comes to dealing with diffi cult clients • Business women are no good at sales because they are too sympathetic with the potential buyer • Business women are no good with fi nancials or information technology So what’s wrong with these assumptions? The problem is not whether there’s any truth to these generalisations for each business woman. The problem is when the people they encounter make judgements or decisions based on those assumptions. Most business women that I know do two important things: 1. They embrace the stereotype if it’s relevant to them and positive for their business 2. They ignore and rise above any stereotypes that would otherwise be harmful for them and the perception of their business. If you are NOT a female business owner and you are reading this, consider that the stereotypes you may have about business women may not only be unfair on them, but you are most likely missing out on their expertise. f you have a website, you need to promote it. Waiting for people who are surfi ng the internet to fi nd it is defi nitely hit-or-miss, and a lack of marketing is the main reason why websites fail. I always say that you can have the best Facebook page in the world, with a trillion fans, but you will never maximise its potential if you’re not promoting your website through it. After all, every visit from a fan to your Facebook page gives the Facebook.com domain name a hit, you don’t own it whereas you own your website’s domain name so any traffi c to your website is a plus. There is help around with online marketing, at the BEC we’re one of them and defi nitely the most cost effective, but there are other businesses that can help if you would rather relieve yourself of the stress. Generating traffi c to your website is all about working with search engines and developing links to and from other sites. Also be sure to change content on your site from time to time. You can play an active role in marketing your own website by making certain that your web address is printed on every single piece of promotional material you have produced. From cars, uniforms, stationery, invoices, packaging, the products themselves and anything else you can think of. Be careful to be selective about the sites you choose to link to and from as some can harm your credibility. Include your web address everywhere you advertise your business. The best website with no visitors is about a useful as an infl atable dartboard.

about. “The Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce was formed around February 25, 1927 and so it will be fitting that our fi rst Tuesday networking function of the year will be celebrations of our 85th anniversary,” Ms Woods said. “It will not only be a celebration of the great work that the Chamber of Commerce strives to achieve, but also a chance to recognise the contributions of our members. “People can be very proud of our region – volunteers started the Chamber
of Commerce and to keep it going, we have needed very strong, committed community members.” The Chamber of Commerce is expecting to attract about 120 people to its milestone celebrations next week. “There is a lot of excitement about the event, particularly from the perspective of staff and the executive,” Ms Woods said. “We’re lucky to be the ones here now for this particular milestone, but it is the contribution of people coming before us that have allowed us to hold the celebrations.”

ove is truly in the air as romantics across the country prepare to woo their sweetheart this Valentine’s Day. But romance is more than a box of chocolates and a single rose, according to Westfi eld Gifting Expert, Margaret Merten. “Every woman likes to feel special, Valentine’s Day is the perfect occasion to show and tell her how much you care,” Margaret said. “If you want to be in her life long-term, take the time to fi nd the perfect present.” From a well thought out card to flowers, surprise dates and special gifts – local experts from Westfi eld Penrith share their Valentine’s Day predictions and advice on how to fi nd the perfect gift for your loved one. No matter how lavish your Valentine’s Day
surprise or gift may be, your grand gesture means nothing without a card that puts your love for her into words. “We sell thousands of cards for Valentine’s Day each year,” said Tim Williams, owner of Special Moments. “Whether it’s fun and fl irty or deep and meaningful, choosing the right card with the right words makes all the diff erence”. Buying jewellery as a Valentine’s Day gift doesn’t mean you have to break the budget. Silver is a popular choice for many. “Popular jewellery items for Valentine’s Day are heart earrings, heart rings, and heart pendants, particularly in Sterling Silver,” said Lynda Bogan, store manager from Prouds Jewellers. “Remember – it’s not about how
much you spend, but what the gift means.” To avoid disappointment pre-ordering bouquets and flower arrangements at least three days before the day is recommended. “Roses are always a popular choice and we typically sell over 3,000 roses on Valentine’s Day each year,” said Cheryl Davis, Store Manager from The Plaza Flower Shop. Chocolates are also a lovely thought when accompanied by a card or special gift. It’s all about giving something special to that special someone in your life. “Chocolates are a staple gift for good reason, a woman’s love for chocolate is eternal,” said Kat Kalb, store manager from Darrell Lea. “Put your own taste preferences aside and think about what will melt her heart.”
Are you Overweight? ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Children are likely to be a source of concern and it will be difficult to know exactly which is the best way to deal with the issues involved. On the personal side of life you will need to be careful of giving the impression of being rather ruthless, so try to see issues or problems from the other person’s point of view. A little fresh air will do you wonders so why not get out into the garden?
Find out why! Do you find that it’s getting harder to lose weight; you’ve almost given up on your dream of weight loss? People don’t understand, they judge you and think that you’re lazy? They don’t know how hard you’ve tried, or how heartbreaking it is to find yourself back here again and again in that familiar place. Feeling foggy and is it hard to concentrate? Can’t motivate yourself no matter how hard you try?
We correct the imbalances so you feel motivated and have plenty of energy to make the changes you want in your life. We also make sure it doesn’t just become another yo-yo diet, by not just giving you a diet and sending you on your way,
but by educating you on how your body works, and using not only correct diet, with real food, but making you lose weight utilising your weight loss hormones.
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
This week’s Full Moon will trigger some tense moments with members of the family during the coming fortnight. It’s extremely easy to get stirred up about loved ones especially if you’re already worried about them. You have incredible powers of persuasion and this is the ideal time in which to put them to use. Do your best to avoid taking control of other people’s issues and turn your attention to enjoying life.
By the time you’ve finished here with us, you’ll be an expert on how to eat to lose weight, while still enjoying the good things in life. We don’t believe in cutting out everything you enjoy, we just teach you how to incorporate them into your diet so it doesn’t make you gain weight again. We provide heaps of great recipes, and all the support you need to be successful – to lose weight and keep it off.
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
What is highlighted at the moment is your ability to communicate your ideas and opinions to anyone who is prepared to listen. However, this doesn’t mean that everyone agrees with you, so be mindful of what you say if you’re having an in depth discussion as there could be some intense spates. You have an amazing sense of humour and this can be put to good use when matters get out of hand!
No matter what level you’re at, being a healthy weight is beneficial not only to looking and feeling great, but to keep you disease free, young, fit and healthy forever!
“With Fiona’s support, I’ve so far lost 60kg in the past 8-9 months, every day getting closer to my goal weight. Fiona keeps a close eye on my progress and quickly makes changes to my program when they’re needed to make sure that I’m not hungry, bored or craving sugar.”
CANCER
JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
Before you splash out on yourself you must be sure that you can really afford to do so, because this seems to be in question. It might be a good idea to get out those bank statements and face up to reality before it’s too late. Avoid making any unnecessary purchases and be prepared for some unexpected expenses. You are the one sign who can turn one dollar into a hundred so put this to good use?

LEO
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
Take things gently until February 17 as it will be horribly easy to become demoralised by the actions or words of certain people. You might have to cope with someone who is keen to put you down or make you doubt yourself. You may also be worried about repeating past patterns of behaviour that were self-defeating or ended in tears. Your originality is heightened and will help you to solve any daunting problems.

Problems and difficulties are about to manifest either in your career or to do with your goals and long-term objectives and matters will not be easily solved. Certain people are being rather aggressive and pushy, try to be tolerant with them even if they do irritate you, otherwise you could have quite a battle on your hands. This is an excellent time to shore up your finances and to listen to advice from loved ones.
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Hold tight if you’re about to make some travel plans as this isn’t the right time for them. As any arrangements you make shall come unravelled or come to nothing. If you have no choice and still have to take off into the wide blue yonder than prepare yourself for delays and hold-ups. Also tolerance is going to be called for when dealing with certain people, as your patience is likely to be tested.
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Your energy levels aren’t very high, you need to look after your health and pace yourself, as almost everything will feel like too much effort. You’re also very sensitive at the moment and could easily feel other people are either looking down their noses at you or giving you the cold shoulder. Try not to let your sensitivities rule, instead use that wonderful witty sense of humour that you are famous for.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
The Full Moon is affecting your relationships during the next few weeks. This is your cue to take action over any business or personal partnerships that you aren’t happy about. This means you will have to face certain realities in your connection and meet problems head on. It may also indicate that certain people no longer belong in your life. Be careful of jealousy and possessiveness invading your life.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Problems are likely on the working front in the next two weeks and unless you enjoy having to start all over again it would be wise to avoid starting any new projects. They won’t get very far and they might even end up causing more trouble than they are worth. Try not to overdo things and remember to take breaks when necessary as it is important that you look after your health and wellbeing.

• Cut back on caff eine: Cutting out caff eine completely may be unrealistic, so just try reducing your intake to one cup in the morning. • Slow down and manage your stress: Eating carbohydrates releases endorphins and can impact the production of serotonin, the feel-good brain chemical that can calm and relax us. During times of high stress our sugar cravings may be triggered by our emotional needs.

Last week on the topic of shake diets I asked what other ‘nutrition’ products have come from pharmacists, some of you knew it; Coca Cola and Pepsi were two others. Th is week I have spoken to Victor Tuballa and he wrote a letter on our question, what makes us fit and healthy? He is a naturopath and has worked with many clients working on his own answer. What is health? “I believe that health is where a person’s quality of life is enhanced when they’re free of illness, injuries and pain. Unfortunately the trend for western cultures is increasing illness and poor health. The good news is that optimum health is readily achievable. Can we increase our chances of avoiding cancer and cardiovascular disease just by proper eating and an active lifestyle? Absolutely! There are groups of people, that have been extensively studied, who are not sharing the trend of chronic disease. In some instances, words for diseases, such as cancer, don’t even exist in their respective languages? Let’s look at three examples: The Hunza people live in the Hunza Valley, located in the Himalayan ranges. Their life expectancy has been documented at around 100-110 years. No cancer, cardiovascular disease or
obesity issues. A large part of their diet consists of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts and seeds. A Small portion of their diet contains animal products such as meat. Regular walks of distances greater than 10 kilometres in mountainous terrain are commonplace. There is a large group of Seventh-Day Adventists living in an area of California known as Loma Linda who were studied over a 30 year period . Their life expectancy is between 9-11 years longer than an average American. Their diet is taken directly from the Bible, which is mainly plant-based such as legumes, seeds and green vegetables. Walks and activity form a very important part of the Adventist lifestyle. We can learn from these people and incorporate their techniques into our own lifestyles in order to achieve optimum health. Here’s a Good start; 1.Physical activity. Make sure you exercise enough to break a sweat. 2. A diet that is at least 80% plant-based. You can still enjoy a piece of meat but perhaps limit this to one meal per day. 3. Drink two litres of fluid daily for better hydration. Th is includes fi ltered water, vegetable juice, herbal/ green tea and coconut water.” Victor Tuballa 0412 486 925, email vrtuballa@bigpond.com. See you next week.

Just what is health?
Overcoming sugar cravings Q. I really battle with sugar cravings, particularly mid afternoon. Any tips on overcoming them? A. Sweet is the fi rst taste humans prefer from birth. So, while it seems that our craving for sweet foods may be hardwired into our DNA, it is possible to keep these cravings in check. Here are five simple strategies you can use to help overcome your sugar cravings: • Eat regularly: Sugar is the brain’s only source of energy, so when we become overly hungry or skip meals, sugar cravings are the brain’s way of letting us know it needs energy. Try planning ahead to include healthy snacks into your daily eating plan. • Choose foods high in fibre such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables: Foods high in fibre digest slower, so you feel fuller for longer. Refi ned carbohydrates such as lollies, biscuits, chocolate and soft drink may give you a short-term energy boost, but you’ll quickly feel sluggish and end up craving more sugar. • Balance your meals and snacks with good sources of protein or healthy fats: Just like fibre, protein and fats are digested more slowly and will keep you satisfied throughout the day. Nuts and nut butters, avocadoes, beans, eggs and lean meats are all excellent sources of proteins or fats.

Start with the small things
What to wear on a Valentine’s date
T
here are so many situations and occasions in life where it is hard to know what is appropriate to wear. I’m sure you have all witnessed someone wearing something inappropriate to an occasion, and there is nothing worse than if it happens to you. Th is is why I am a stresshead when it comes to getting dressed up for a date. I’ve been with my boyfriend for two years now and, to his frustration, I still take ages to get ready and stress about how appropriate my outfi t is. I hate having to get dressed up and for me there is nothing worse than going somewhere not knowing what everyone else is wearing. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, hopefully we’ll each be taken out on a lovely date but, unfortunately, there are so many opportunities for us to make mistakes with an outfi t! In saying this, how do we get it right on Valentine’s Day? There are only three details that you need to take into
account in order to get it right on Valentine’s Day; where you are going, who you are going with and what you are doing? 1. Where you go on your date is incredibly important for outfit choices because it is so easy to be too dressed up or too casual. 2. Who you are on a date with is equally as important. I have narrowed it down to two diff erent date scenarios; those in relationships and those hoping to be in relationships. For those in relationships, you can’t go wrong with wearing something that is a favourite for both of you. Ladies, wear a dress he loves and gentlemen, wear a shirt that brings back good memories of a time you spent together. For those hoping to be in a relationship, don’t dress in clothes that don’t complement your personality, it only leads to complications later. 3. What you are doing is also important because you don’t want the awkward ‘whoops I wore a skirt to a theme park’ issue. Remember these three tips, and not much can go wrong!

alentine’s Day, love it or loathe it, is a chance to shower those you love with aff ection and, while the tradition varies slightly across many cultures and countries, I’m particularly taken with the translation of Valentine’s Day into Friends Day. As the name indicates, this day is more about remembering all your friends, not only your loved ones. So, what do Valentine’s Day or Friends Day and banking have in common? Well, if you haven’t found your perfect business banking match – a bank manager that you can call directly and rely on as you would a friend – then chances are you may have settled for second best. Here are a few questions to see if you’re getting enough love from your bank: • Do you know your branch manager’s name and number? • Does your branch manager understand your fi nancial goals and vision? • Does your branch manager provide you with expert advice? • Can you reach your branch manager out of business hours and know they’ll be helpful? • Does your branch manager make you feel like a valued customer and not just a number? If you’ve given your branch manager a perfect score then you’re lucky to have found the one! And, if you’re not happy, shop around, and the same rules can apply to any customerservice industry, if you’re not getting the love you think you deserve then you have the power to do something about it! Vote with your feet this Valentine’s Day! This article is for general information purposes only and is not intended as financial or professional advice. ALL ABOUT FEET
t this time of year it’s important to remind people with diabetes what steps should be taken to ensure good foot health and avoid complications. As we move out of the festive season and possibly getting a bit lazy with all the little things, let’s focus on getting back on track with healthy feet. Step #1. Check your feet every day. Look at your feet very carefully every day to be sure you have no cuts, scrapes or blisters. Step #2. Wear the right shoes and socks. Don’t wear shoes that fit too tightly or pinch your feet. Choose thick cotton socks and well-cushioned shoes with plenty of room in the toes. Step #3. Have your Podiatrist check your feet regularly. See your Podiatrist regularly to be sure the effects of Diabetes are under control. Step #4. Treat cuts, scrapes and blisters. See your doctor or Podiatrist if a wound does not heal. If you get a small cut, scrape or blister on your foot, wash the area gently with salt water. Step #5. Keep your feet clean. Gently wash your feet with soap and water every day. Pat your feet dry. Step #6. Cut your toenails correctly. Cut your toenails straight across the top, not curved at the sides, to prevent ingrown toenails. Step #7. Treat Athlete’s Foot (Fungal Infection). Athlete’s foot is more common in
people who have diabetes, and it can cause problems. If you have athlete’s foot, wear a different pair of shoes every other day. Use over-the-counter fungal treatments and see your Podiatrist if unresolved. Step #8. Get proper treatment for thickened skin, calluses and corns. Many people with diabetes get thickened skin, calluses or corns over the bony spots on their feet. Don’t trim or cut these spots at home with razor blades or other sharp tools. Don’t use corn pads as they cause maceration of the skin and can lead to infections.
I
recently wrote about generic medications and have since had customers wanting to know more. Here are some of their questions.
Why am I offered diff erent brands of my medication? When a company fi rst develops a medication they are the only ones allowed to sell it for a period of time, normally 20 years. After this time, any company can make the same medication but it must be made under very high quality control and scientifi cally proven to work exactly the same. Most types of medications will then be made by many companies under different brand names. Are the diff erent brands the same quality? Yes, all the brands are equal and contain the same drug. In Australia, because the strict testing of medications must prove all the brands are the same, it’s more important to focus on the actual active drug ingredient than it is the brand name or who makes it. All brands of the same medications must have the same drug ingredient, be the same strength and dose, work and stay in the body for the same amount of time and have the same results.

Why are generics important to the Australian economy? Generic medications are often cheaper for you but they also cost our health system less. In Australia our medications are subsidised by taxpayers through the PBS and generics save our economy billions of dollars. When money is saved on the PBS this allows other medications to be made aff ordable to Australians, like expensive cancer treatments. As more people choose generics there are massive savings to the national health budget and this helps to keep the budget sustainable and aff ordable. These savings really add up.

chools are well and truly back. Kindy kids (and their parents!) have shed a few tears as they begin a big new adventure. Year 6 has moved onto “Big” school and the hard work begins for Year 12! School Year 2012 is well and truly under way. While some parents might be relieved to have their children back at school and have a bit more peace and quiet at home, there’s no doubt that all parents want the best for their children. It’s pretty much the desire for all parents to see their children stay on the right track; to see their children happy, well balanced and not going off the rails. How can they do it? How can those who are parents give good advice to their children and help them have the best? In the Old Testament book of the Bible in the Psalm 119, the writer asks the same question. He asks, “How can a young person live a pure life?” The answer? “By obeying the word of the Lord”. All of Psalm 119 is written from the point of view of someone who understands the value of knowing and living by God’s word in the Bible. They know the value of “keeping God’s word close to their heart”, in “delighting in God’s word”, in “striving to understand” it more and more. Here is the answer of how young people can develop real wisdom and understanding, how they can gain a real perspective of what is right and good – by

From changing tyres and breakdowns up and down the highway, through to servicing fleets of work vans for larger businesses in Penrith, I can do all of this in the one week.” Mountain Mechanics recently achieved Female Friendly Accreditation and female customers appreciate Adam’s promptness, cleanliness and his ability to explain what he is doing in everyday language. One of his customers, Melissa from Accounting and Taxation Advantage “appreciates that I no longer have to do the car pick up/drop off in between client appointments”. Brilliant Borg: How Val stumbled into boxing

ROAD TO THE LONDON OLYMPICS 2012: THE LOCAL PROSPECTS
SHELLEY WATTS TRAINING AT PENRITH PCYC
Olympic dream: Shelley finds her calling in the boxing ring CASSANDRA O CONNOR
I
n 2010, Shelley Watts was facing a knee reconstruction and an end to her career in soccer. Just 18 months later, Watts has found herself ranked number one in Australia – not in soccer, but boxing. In her fi rst fight, Watts stopped her opponent in 1 minute and 20 seconds. “My favourite punch is my left rip and I train twice a day. But not just boxing, I
do swimming, sprint sessions, weights, whatever I can to get fitter and faster,” she said. So far in her career, Watts has enjoyed competing all over Australia, including taking out the 2011 Australian Championships and competing in Europe. “In NSW boxing for women was only recently legalised so the European girls have had a lot more experience – some with over 100 fights – but it was a great learning curve for me as I don’t have many female sparring partners, I mostly train with guys.”
VAL BORG IS A LOCAL HOPE FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES IN LONDON
CASSANDRA O CONNOR
I
n his weight division there are a lot of talents, but Val Borg is sure he has more than just a fighting chance of making the London 2012 Olympics. Very relaxed and calm, Borg said he originally started boxing nearly four years ago because his parents thought it was a good idea. “I joined Penrith PCYC because my dad thought that boxing would teach me
discipline and how to defend myself,” he said. Little did he know that he would stumble across his calling in life. Borg has since fi nished with a silver medal at the 2011 Australian Championships in his weight division and came fi rst at the Golden Gloves. “The Golden Gloves was a really important win for me because I had to take on the Youth Olympics Silver medallist,” he said. At only 19, Borg is sure to be one to watch in the ring.

EXCLUSIVE: Sandor tells us all about “that date” with TV starlet CASSANDRA O CONNOR
A
s Valentine’s Day draws near, all eyes have been on 22-yea r-old Pen r it h Panthers winger, Sandor Earl, who landed himself a date with Swedish student, Josie Capllonch after he saw her on Channel Seven’s new show, ‘Please Marry My Boy’. Ms Capllonch was featured on the show as a potential suitor but was eliminated. Earl told the Weekender that it was a short and sweet tweet that got the ball rolling. “I was just there sitting, watching the show because I knew one of the girls who was going to be on it. I just tweeted something to her saying she was good looking and had a good accent and then all the boys found out and before I knew it I had her number,” he said. “Twitter is really big with the boys at Panthers at the moment so they were onto it pretty quick.” Before long Earl found himself in possession of Ms
Capllonch’s phone number and the relationship has been the subject of much commentary in the social pages of Sydney’s major newspapers. “I gave her a call just to introduce myself and we decided to go out for coffee,” he said. “I know she had Google images of who I was before we met so that would have been pretty interesting for her and she has been approached by lots of people about me.” Earl said he took Ms Capllonch to the Crown Street Grocer on Sunday afternoon because it has a good vibe and is a place he regularly visits. “We had a good chat and a coffee and it went well,” he said. As for Valentine’s Day, Earl said he would “defi nitely be giving her a buzz”. “I would defi nitely like to meet up with her again, we got along really well,” he said. Bad luck to all those Panthers fans who were hoping to snag the winger for a Valentine’s Day romance.
