T

he Penrith Panthers will throw back to the 1970s later this month while at the same time raising funds in support of seriously ill children and their families.

Penrith’s upcoming Round 20 match against the Canberra Raiders at Pepper Stadium will not only celebrate the NRL’s annual Heritage Round but will also raise money for the Ronald McDonald Nepean Family Room at Nepean Hospital.

The Sunday, July 26 fixture against the Raiders was originally slated to be played in Christchurch, New Zealand, but after plans fell through, the club decided to give Panthers members and fans another opportunity to support their team at home.

With the match now confirmed for Penrith, the club has announced a match day initiative to raise $100,000 for the Nepean Family Room.

The Panthers have promised to contribute $10 from every adult ticket purchase and $5 from every junior ticket purchase towards the $100,000 fundraising target.

The Nepean Family Room provides a welcoming home away from home for families of seriously ill children, who are undergoing treatment at Nepean Hospital.

“The Nepean Family Room is a special place and Panthers is proud to have the opportunity to make a contribution to the remarkable service it provides,” Panthers Head of Rugby League, Justin Pascoe said.

Story continued from » p. 1 ust a week after Penrith City Council axed funding to the Penrith Business Alliance (PBA), it has been revealed Council has found someone new to lead the Penrith Progression (PP) concept.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said finding someone else for the position was always going to happen for the implementation stage of the PP. “We are now trying to implement, and to do that I believe Council has hired somebody, but that was a piece of work going on prior to the PBA [decision],” he said.

Cr Fowler said he believes this is a positive for Penrith, for getting on with the initiatives of the community and the PP. “I know the PP started off as a PBA initiative, but because of the resources it required, Council took control. That was a mutual agreement,” he said.

Councillor Jim Aitken, a PBA board member, remains disappointed.

“I have more comfort in the fact they have put someone on, but I will be watching it very closely,” he said.

“I still would have preferred to have the PBA. It’s a shame the PBA is gone, it was a good organisation that did good work.”

PBA Director George Rabie, PBA Deputy Chair Councillor Jim Aitken and PBA Chairman Paul Brennan Cr Aitken said there were issues with Council this year that has also made it a very difficult time for the PBA. “As soon as you bring distrust into an organisation you have problems, the whole truth was not told,” he said.

“I have been assured the new management of the PP will be keeping clear of that.”

PBA Chairman, Paul Brennan said the PBA’s success was based on its separation from local Government.

“In May, Council were requesting as a condition of renegotiation they fire our CEO. That was Council’s attempt to try and control the PBA, but the success of the PBA was based on our independence,” Mr Brennan said.

“We are calling on our members and fans to rally to this cause with the same pride, passion and commitment they show for our club every week.”

Players will also take to the field against the Raiders wearing the newly released Panthers heritage jumper – inspired from their 1973/74 seasons – with $10 from each heritage jersey sale also going towards the cause.

Located in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Nepean Hospital, the Nepean Family Room contains a kitchen, lounge room, dining area, play area, a mothers room and a quiet room.

The facility is managed by dedicated volunteers and is designed to alleviate some of the stress associated with the emotionally-draining experience of caring for a seriously ill child.

“The donations from the Panthers initiative will help with our ongoing operational costs, allowing us to stock our pantry and fridge, pay for maintenance and support our volunteers,” Nepean Family Room Coordinator, Meagan Preston said.

The story that didn’t need a villain I want to start this column by saying that I have the utmost respect for Alex McKinnon and his partner Teigan Power, who are an absolute inspiration and a wonderful example of strength during adversity.

The bond between Alex and Teigan, the mateship of Korbin Sims and the generosity of the entire rugby league community make McKinnon’s story one that deserves to be told to a wider audience than just NRL followers, which was the case via ‘60 Minutes’ last Sunday night.

If there was ever a story that didn’t need a villain, it’s this one.

I expected to watch ‘60 Minutes’ last weekend needing a tissue or two nearby – I know the McKinnon story well, but this was going to be particularly emotional.

Instead I watched the program feeling incredibly frustrated and uncomfortable as the agenda of ‘60 Minutes’ became clear – they needed somebody to blame and Melbourne, Queensland and Australian captain Cameron Smith was in the firing line.

Alex McKinnon and his family have a problem with the way Smith spoke to referees on the field after Alex was taken off on a stretcher after lying motionless on the ground for nearly 10 minutes.

They have an even bigger problem, it would seem, with the fact that he has apparently never contacted the McKinnon family to apologise.

Let’s address the Smith issue first, and then ‘60 Minutes’ itself.

Firstly, context must be given to the situation.

Smith had no idea what the extent of McKinnon’s injury was. He has been around footy long enough to know that in the vast majority of cases, a player being stretchered off does not result in the circumstances Alex now finds himself in.

Smith spoke to the referee in reference to the penalty given against his side compared to earlier incidents in the same game, and pleaded for consistency.

The implication on ‘60 Minutes’ was that Smith argued with the referee about the penalty for a long period of time.

Context must be given to the situation

“As Alex lay paralysed and even eight minutes later when he is carried off the ground, Smith continues to argue that Alex caused his own injury,” says reporter Liz Hayes.

That is not the case.

Smith spoke to the referee briefly, then remained silent for the next eight minutes before speaking to the referee again after Alex was lifted from the ground.

With the benefit of hindsight, Smith probably regrets the comments about Alex contributing to his injury, but at the time the discussion with the referee was no different to what happens week in, week out with all NRL captains.

Alex and his family clearly have significant anger towards Smith, even labelling his comments and actions as “unforgivable”.

Nobody has the right to tell them who to be angry at and I can’t be critical of their thoughts and comments.

However, some damning comments were made about Smith and you would think that Smith has every right to defend himself.

It’s journalism 101.

Not according to ‘60 Minutes’, who confirmed they didn’t offer Smith the right of reply.

“60 Minutes chose not to contact Cameron Smith before our story went to air, because this was Alex’s story, told by Alex and his family and friends,” said Executive Producer, Tom Malone.

I’m sorry, but that’s bullshit. It’s irresponsible and lacking of journalistic integrity.

Yes, it was Alex’s story, but Alex and ‘60 Minutes’ brought Cameron Smith well and truly into the story, and given the nature of the comments, he deserved a right to have his say.

Even if ‘60 Minutes’ didn’t feel it appropriate to ask Smith for comment (which I strongly believe they should have), the Storm issued a media statement several hours before the program aired last Sunday night. It was clear from that statement that there was more to this story.

Apparently Smith is planning to avoid Channel Nine when it comes to his media commitments in the future. He has every right to do so.

Senator Simon Birmingham and Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott chatted with local apprentices about the launch of two Federal Government initiatives at Nepean Private Hospital where local apprentices are working on upgrades.

He said western Sydney is a big winner in the new Apprenticeship Support Network arrangement, with three local providers offering support services.

“Across Australia we have added more than 100 new locations where people will be able to get apprenticeship advice and support,” he said.

Ms Scott said it was positive news.

“Providers will target support services to the individual needs of employers and apprentices, from pre-commencement to completion,” she said.

“The 2,311 apprentices in training across the Lindsay electorate will get to realise the full benefits of an apprenticeship, and the rewarding careers that come as a result.”

Mr Birmingham joined Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott to launch updates to the MySkills website, and the new Australian Apprenticeship Support Network.

Mr Birmingham said the user-friendly update to the MySkills website will help vocational education and training students, their parents, teachers, careers advisors and employers make informed decisions.

“The website is far easier to navigate, and people can take a look and identify what are areas of skill shortage in any state or territory,” he said.

“That can help to inform them and make a sensible choice about pursuing a qualification that will best enhance their prospects of getting a new or better job.”

He said the updated site has more data and information on different training organisations and qualifications that students can compare.

Glenmore Park: Man busted

Emu Plains: Thornton resident caught drink driving

A man has been charged after he was allegedly drink-driving in Glenmore Park this week.

On Monday, July 7 at about 10.25am, the man was driving along Ridgetop Drive.

The 25-year-old came through the intersection at Waterford Way and allegedly lost control of his vehicle where he then hit a tree.

Police were called to the scene where the man was given a breath test.

He was charged with a mid-range PCA and negligent driving and given a future court attendance notice.

He was driving a 2003 silver Toyota Avalon.

Police stopped a vehicle and searched it this week after the occupant was allegedly acting suspiciously.

At about 1.40am on Sunday, July 5, a man was stopped on The Great Western Highway at Emu Plains after police were alerted to his manner of driving.

He was given a breath test where he tested positive.

He was taken to Penrith Police Station and was charged with a mid-range PCA offence.

The 42-year-old from Thornton is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on July 27.

Anyone who notices bad behaviour from drivers should contact police.

Two vehicles were searched last week after police patrolling Emu Plains found the occupants of the vehicles allegedly acting suspiciously.

On Saturday, July 4, police were patrolling Mackellar Street in Emu Plains when they came across the two vehicles.

Police allege a number of different drugs were found in both vehicles.

A 24-year-old male from Mt Druitt was given a future court attendance notice for possessing a prohibited drug that police allege to be cannabis. A 33-year-old woman from Lethbridge Park was charged twice with possessing a prohibited drug while a 24-year-old woman from Marayong was also charged with possess prohibited drug as well as learner unaccompanied.

All three will appear in court on July 29.

Emu Plains: Drug bust

A driver was taken to hospital last Saturday night after he crashed a car into a St Clair front yard.

At about 12.10am on Saturday, July 6, police allege a 19-year-old was drink-driving in a white Ford Maverick 4WD and was travelling north on Erskine Park Road.

He turned west into Coonawarra Drive where police say he continued across the road, mounted the kerb and collided with a fence outside the house. The collision pushed the fence into a parked car.

The Ford continued on and collided with another parked car in the driveway and then flipped on its side.

Emergency services were called where a roadside breath test was conducted, that police allege tested positive.

The man was arrested.

Owner of the prestigious Fernhill Estate, Brenda Tripp, has committed to work through compliance issues to make sure the Fernhill Picnic Races will go ahead next year after the event was cancelled for 2015.

Despite a five year approval from Penrith City Council to continue the event, Mrs Tripp has confirmed there will be no picnic races this year.

Mrs Tripp said the decision to cancel the races this October was forced because of what she called an “overkill” of compliance requirements.

“The onerous compliance makes it very expensive... this year we couldn’t sustain another personal financial loss,” she said.

“A lot of conditions and constraints have been put on this event to satisfy half-a-dozen people in Mulgoa for one day, compared to the 5000 people who attend the event.”

Mrs Tripp said there are around 12 different reports organisers need to submit to run the event, including traffic, environmental and acoustic reports.

“It’s been a very heavy handed approach to an event that does not need it... they’ve

Funding Secured for family support services in Penrith Federal government funding of more than $215,000 has been awarded to Penrith Council for children and parent support services.

The funding has been awarded to Penrith Council’s Children’s Services under the Department of Social Services (DSS) Children and Parenting Program.

It means current programs like the Family Support Program will continue to run for another two years.

The Children and Parenting Services provide resources that are aimed at improving children’s development and wellbeing and support the capacity of those in a parenting role.

Neighbourhood Action Plans benefits 12 priority suburbs in Penrith City More than 10,000 Penrith City Residents have taken part in 140 community events and programs undertaken by the Neighbourhood Renewal Program since 2007.

The Neighbourhood Renewal Program (NRP) is about equality and a fair share for all residents. The program provides many opportunities for residents to get involved and be part of creating something special in their own neighbourhood.

NRP has resulted in Council endorsing 369 actions to improve the physical, social and economic environment for residents in 12 priority suburbs.

SW Fire and Rescue and Penrith RSL have launched their ‘Keep Looking When Cooking’ fire safety campaign ahead of Winter Fire Safety Week next week.

A fire demonstration was held at Penrith RSL this week with residents and community members witnessing just how quickly a pot with oil sitting on the stove can catch fire.

FRNSW Chief Superintendent Chris Lewis said the demonstration would have given residents and community members the information they need to be fire safe in the home.

“We’re encouraging the community, particularly older residents, to take a few simple safety measures to avoid becoming the next victim of a fire,” Superintendent Lewis said.

“On average, FRNSW firefighters respond to around 1230 house fires each winter – almost half of those start in the kitchen, so the message is clear this winter – keep looking when cooking.”

According to Chief Executive Officer of the RSL and Services Association, Garrie Gibson, of the 1072 residential fires over winter in 2014, 438 or 41 per cent of those were in the kitchen.

“A core part of our job is to prevent the fires from happening in the first place by starting with simple demonstrations like this one,” said firefighter Peter Darroch.

Firefighters also poured water onto the fire displaying the disastrous effects it can have as it blew up in a fire ball. Mr Darroch also suggested getting some fire safe items in the home.

Penrith Council’s Neighbourhood Renewal program has seen more than 10,000 residents take part in 140 community events since its inception in 2007.

The program works with residents in older, established neighbourhoods to identify the strengths and the unique needs of each locality.

It encourages the communities to get involved in finding new and creative ways to address local issues and help with community, cultural and economic development.

Twelve suburbs across Penrith have been involved in the program.

Residents have contributed to the process and have their say in decisions which affect their neighbourhood with Council receiving over 1000 submissions on ways to develop and improve their community.

Considerable support has been provided the Neighbourhood Renewal Program by partner organisations including many local schools and TAFE, cultural, neighbourhood and youth services, faith groups and churches, as well as volunteer groups, small businesses and not-for-profit community

organisations.

Currently, primary and secondary students in Colyton are designing and making budgeting decisions for a local park.

Similar projects have led to the improvement of facilities at Werrington Lakes, affordable community programs and events for families, children and young people as well as improved disability access in the Penrith CBD. The program has received a number of awards including the Award for Community Participation in Arts and Culture at the Local Government Arts and Cultural Awards in 2014.

Giving kids the best chance in life Funding to continue for important program that targets children most in need DALE DRINKWATER

errington’s Yoorami Child Care Centre is one of six in the local area that will see Federal Government funding allowing them to continue their support services to vulnerable children and families.

The Department of Social Services has awarded Penrith City Council’s Children’s Services $215,348 over two years to go towards their Family Support Program.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler and Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott joined staff at the Yoorami centre last week to welcome the announcement, that will provide particular support to Aboriginal families.

Cr Fowler said the continued funding is a great outcome that will ensure services that Council has previously delivered will continue.

“It’s going to improve a lot of young kids’ lives who otherwise might not have had the opportunity to get that additional help and education, targeted at children from disadvantaged backgrounds at home,” he said.

“We have to thank Fiona Scott and Scott Morrison for their support. They can see

the work that’s been done here in the past, and saw there was a need for it to continue.”

Ms Scott said Council’s Family Support Program is a great front line service that provides programs for children in families that are most at risk.

“The program provides the early education tools that children need and that’s why having the professional services here are great,” she said.

“These children will get that early learning with the program, and if they are in families that are at risk they may not be getting that from home.”

Ms Scott said at risk families can struggle with drug and alcohol issues, and these early childhood services will give their children the best chance to have their best life.

“That’s why this program is so important, because it gives these children a gateway to future success,” she said.

Council’s Children’s Services Manager, Janet Keegan, said the funding will go toward several centres in the area.

“It’s for a family support worker who comes to the centre, connects with families and takes informal referrals – that is the biggest component of the funding,” she said.

“Almost 500 new or upgraded mobile base stations will be built across regional and remote Australia, covering a total of 3,000 mobile black spots from the more than 6,000 black spots nominated by the public,” said Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Communications, Paul Fletcher.

Spreading an important message Penrith local has plenty of advice to offer ahead of Diabetes Awareness Week JADE ALIPRANDI

ustralia has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the world, with approximately 3.61 million Australians with diabetes or pre-diabetes.

Penrith resident and Diabetes NSW Ambassador, Melanie Galea, is speaking out about the chronic disease ahead of Diabetes Awareness Week, which runs from July 12 to July 18.

Diabetes is caused when the pancreas can’t function properly and is unable to create enough insulin for the body.

Now 31, Ms Galea found out at the young age of five that she had type one diabetes, and said she remembers getting diagnosed like it was yesterday.

“I had the chicken pox at the time and I’m not sure if that was what made the symptoms come out but I lost a lot of weight, I was really thirsty and I had a lot of a headaches,” she said.

“These are all common signs that something could be wrong.”

It was only a few years later when Ms Galea began injecting insulin herself four times a day, which is part of the treatment for type one diabetes.

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Council has applied for $10 million in funding from the Federal Government to contribute to the $20 million South Creek Park Sporting Precinct.

The Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development is offering $1 billion over the next five years as part of their second round in the National Stronger Regions Fund (NSRF). The NSRF is to fund priority infrastructure, and Council endorsed that the South Creek Sporting Precinct’s importance lies within the wider South Creek Corridor Precinct plan. The wider plan, that stretches from St Marys to St Clair, links the Wianamatta Regional Park and the Western Sydney Parklands to create a regional recreational corridor, providing large socio and economic benefits.

ogy, Ms Galea was given the opportunity to use a diabetic pump that is strapped to her and acts like a functioning pancreas, pumping insulin into her when it’s needed.

“It has allowed me to lead more of a normal life than I was before,” Ms Galea said.

“It’s a really flexible option where you don’t have to have such a strict eating regime and you don’t have to make sure you remember to inject yourself every few hours with insulin – it has really helped me.”

As for being an ambassador for Diabetes NSW, Ms Galea said she is happy she is able to pass on information to others.

Given she’s lived with the condition for almost her whole life, she’s well placed to offer advice.

“I have the advice to offer because I have had diabetes for so long and I really wanted to be more involved in the community side of things when I signed up,” she said.

Other symptoms of type one diabetes include passing more urine, feeling tired, always feeling hungry, having cuts that heal slowly, itching, blurred vision, mood swings and feeling dizzy.

Council has formally adopted the Council Rates and Charges for 2015 to 2016, that are made in line with the increase approved by IPART for 2015 to 2016. Ordinary rates for residential and farmland properties are a minimum amount of $864.20, and business including in both the Penrith CBD and St Marys Town Centre will be $1,105.80. The Stormwater Management Service Charge will be $25 per annum for residential non-strata properties, and half that for residential strata properties at $12.50. Urban business properties will be charged

$22.80 for their stormwater service, including an additional $22.80 for every 350 square metres their parcel of land exceeds 350 square metres.

On overdue rates and charges, people can expect to be charged 8.5 per cent interest per annum.

The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre will be getting mechanical services upgrades, to replace the air conditioning and building management system (BMS). The upgrades were designed to include new technologies and energy saving features to increase comfort levels and reduce operational costs, and issues such as excessive noise and poor air circulation have been addressed. The BMS system upgrade will increase control over the system, and reduces running costs by managing economy cycles, time scheduling and kW reporting.

The four stages of the mechanical services upgrades will be completed

by HSA Services, costing around $1.3 million. Stages one and two will be funded by Council’s 2015/2016 asset renewal budget, and stages three and four will be completed by forwarding the funding from the 2016/2017 asset renewal budget.

The next Council meeting is a Policy Review Committee meeting on July 13.

nless you stay at home, a cigarette with your meal is now a thing of the past.

From Monday, hotels, clubs, restaurants and cafes’ outdoor dining areas were made smoke-free, banning all devices including cigarettes, pipes and water pipes.

Penrith resident, Lorraine Punter, enjoys going out and having a nice lunch, but said she isn’t happy the new laws will stop her from enjoying a cigarette with it too.

“I don’t like it, especially if you’re sitting down having a conversation or a meal, and you’d like to have a cigarette,” she said.

“I also love a coffee with my cigarette, but now you can’t sit at a cafe with a friend and talk and have both.

“I feel bad for people who smoke because it’s not right.”

If a health inspector finds a customer smoking in any outdoor dining area, the individual can get an on-the-spot fine of up to $300, and the business up to $5,500.

If business owners do not display the ‘no smoking’ signs in their outdoor dining area, they can be fined up to $550.

they haven’t had any issues with patrons yet, but the real challenge is trying to avoid the hefty fines.

“I think the fines are a bit too much.

We’ve got plenty of signs up, but now it’s just about trying to keep an eye on it,” she said.

If there is no designated smoking area, a customer will have to go outside the venue, providing they abide by the new ‘four metre law’, that has banned smoking within four metres of a pedestrian entry or exit.

Panthers this week changed its outdoor areas to accommodate the new laws.

Dr Bradley Forssman, Director of Public Health from the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, said there is a high level of support for the smoke-free areas.

“These new laws will result in an important reduction in many people’s exposure to these dangers and reduce the risk of long-term ill health, therefore improving the overall health and wellbeing of the community,” he said.

“Many businesses have already voluntarily banned smoking within four metres of an entrance to a hospitality venue.”

ays for Girls Emu Plains Chapter will be holding a fundraiser next month with the hope of providing hygiene and toiletry kits to women in Bangladesh.

The organisation, an extension of Aussie Bangla Smile, aims to improve life for young women in Bangladesh by providing them with hygiene kits, all hand-made by several volunteers of the organisation.

Made up of doctors and nurses, the group take several trips over to Bangladesh each year to provide people in the area with much-needed surgeries and special products to help improve their quality of life.

Registered Nurse and volunteer, Barbara Mitchell, said they can see how much they are helping the young women.

“When we did our first trip in March to deliver the kits to the women they were all so interested and so thankful,” Ms Mitchell said.

“It was just an amazing experience to see how much these kits do help.”

The kits come with undies and soaps among other items, with each one lasting around three years for each girl.

Funds to help teens

early $37,000 has been presented to the Luke Priddis Foundation, with the funds to go towards assisting children with autism.

Penrith’s Bank of Queensland (BOQ) branch handed the foundation a cheque for $36,935 on Wednesday – funds raised from a Golf Day in early March.

The Luke Priddis Foundation’s General Manager, Tamara Van Antwerpen said the funds will go towards a social program for 12 to 16-year-olds.

“The funds will be put towards running social skills groups, the most recent is the Emjoi-Project, which is groundbreaking because it’s for teenagers,” she said “Most of the work people do with autism is based around early intervention, but autism doesn’t go away as kids get older.”

Turning back Time

Family had a big impact on Mulgoa Jade Aliprandi looks into the remarkable history of the Cox family, who played a significant role in building some of the remarkable architecture that exists in Mulgoa...

T

he Cox family worked hard in creating, what are now considered, important and historical buildings in the Mulgoa district that were built for generations to come.

William Cox became a Lieutenant in the NSW Corps after making the move from Winbourne, England to Sydney, Australia in 1800 with his four sons. After an unsuccessful start in Pennant Hills, the Cox family settled at Windsor in 1904 at a Clarendon property.

It wasn’t long after the family settled when they became interested in land in the Mulgoa district.

Lt. William received the first grant for land west of the Blue Mountains and played probably one of his most influential roles in supervising and constructing the road over the Blue Mountains towards Bathurst after receiving his 2000 acre grant.

He was also responsible for building several estates and houses in the Mulgoa district including one of the colony’s first houses of weatherboard and brick-nog

‘The Cottage’ is believed to have been started in 1811 and completed around 1822 and remains today as a testimony to construction methods of that early time in Australia’s history.

The property became a big project for architect James Broadbent, who, in the 1990s, lovingly and patiently began restoring it to its original condition using the original fabric and decor of The Cottage.

His son Edward received his first grant of 300 acres at just four-years-old in 1810, now known as the Fernhill Estate.

He built the estate not too far away from Lt. William’s property, ‘The Cottage’, with the property known as ‘Fern Hill’ at the time.

George Cox had his grant of 600 acres made out in 1816 – an area that became the future site of the Winbourne Estate.

In 1822 or 1823, he married Eliza Bell of Belmont, Richmond.

The pair lived at ‘The Cottage’ which was the Cox’s outstation, situated beyond the present St Thomas’ church.

on the 600 acre grant which eventually became the first section of the Winbourne mansion.

In 1842 the estate was enlarged and a second storey was added with verandahs and balconies.

Winbourne was pivotal in the making of the agricultural and social industries in the Mulgoa District.

The Cox sheep industry was created at Winbourne, vineyards and wine productions began, there was the cultivation of wheat and other cereal crops as well as fruit growing and dairying.

Convicts were recruited to work at the property with many returning to work on the Cox’s estates at the expiration of their bondage.

In 1838, George gave considerable aid in the erection of St Thomas’ Church as he donated 40 acres of his land adjoining the Mulgoa Creek for the rectory and glebe.

A letter written by a V.D. Cox sometime in the 1900s tells a story about a situation George Cox found himself in, demonstrating what people thought of him during his time at Mulgoa.

After taking his gold watch and money ‘Donohoe’ inquired who he was. On being told his name, he handed everything back with the remark that George Cox was too good a man and he certainly would not rob him of anything.”

Winbourne was to remain in the Cox family until 1901 when it was sold to Peter Hewitt who leased the property to the Hore family who then ran Winbourne as a guest house.

By 1914 Winbourne was leased to Tom Campbell who turned the property into a holiday resort.

He was still leasing the property in August 1920 when the house was destroyed by fire.

Fernhill Estate, built by Edward, was in the Cox family until 1885.

The Cottage, built by William, was occupied and extended by various members of the Cox family up until 1913.

The annual ‘William Cox Historical Festival and Open Day’ will be celebrated next Sunday, July 19 at the Arms of Australia Museum.

recent article I wrote left you with the thought: “Imagine if we put the same effort into imagining positive outcomes and dreaming up solutions to negative situations”. In a nutshell, I was talking about creating happiness and a positive environment for you and your staff.

So how do we create happiness in our business?

Most ‘happiness experts’ will tell you that the first step is to be grateful.

Look for aspects of your business, your circumstances and your prospects that you can be grateful for. Make a point of listing at least three things and add to this list regularly. If you have staff, ask them to do the same exercise once a week, so that the focus is not on fear, worry, anger or other negative emotions.

But of course, this isn’t enough! It also takes action. And one of the best ways to do this is to give.

There is now research confirming that acts of altruism and generosity actually change the brain, increasing our peace, happiness, health and even intelligence.

In the context of your business, this

might be achieved by giving great customer service that is beyond expectations, or taking the time to assist a colleague without expecting anything in return. Or it might be donating your time, money or resources to a local charity. Doing any of these acts of giving fills you with a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

And finally, if you want to be happy, start pretending to be happy. This might sound like strange advice! But have you ever tried genuinely smiling and being angry at the same time? Your physical state influences your emotional state and vice versa, and being mindful and purposeful about ‘being happy’ actually causes you to be just that!

Enacting these three steps regularly and authentically will alter your happiness levels and teach you that happiness is a choice.

Life and business will still have its ups and downs, but ‘practicing happiness’ will lead to happiness being your default state.

2. Prioritise tasks. Direct your energy toward situations where you can affect the outcome and don’t spend time worrying about what you cannot change. Successful people focus on tasks which they can control and let go of the rest.

3. Accept the help of others. You can seek the input of other people before reaching any decision.

4. Learn how to deal with different kinds of people at work. Develop your listening skills in order to interact better with people and pay attention to improving your communication skills.

5. Stop looking at the clock. When you have to meet a tight deadline, instead of constantly looking at the clock, focus on the task at hand. Do the task with full concentration.

C

onfidence is high in Pantherland at the moment and after two impressive wins over the Wests Tigers and South Sydney, there’s every reason to believe Penrith can make it three in a row against competition heavyweights the Roosters this Saturday evening at Pepper Stadium.

On the big stage of Friday Night Football last weekend, Bryce Cartwright announced himself as a genuine superstar in the making – and he has the ‘rise from adversity’ story to go with it after revelations doctors believed he may never play again after he was injured last season.

Cartwright is such an impressive player and given he’s just 20-years-old, the best is yet to come.

You can be almost certain that coach Ivan Cleary won’t try and calm down his

free style of play, which helped to create that stunning try to Dean Whare in the first half against the Rabbitohs.

Cartwright will have good and bad days, especially given the risks he takes as a footballer, but he has the raw ability and class to ensure the good more than outweighs the bad.

He faces a tough ask this weekend against a Roosters side that is fresh after a bye last weekend and comes into this game on the back of a 20-10 victory over the Gold Coast Titans on the Central Coast. The win wasn’t pretty, but the side did enough to grab the two points – something that wasn’t happening earlier in the year when they lost several close games.

The Roosters boast a range of attacking weapons that have the potential to run riot over the Panthers if they’re not totally switched on. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Daniel Tupou, Michael Jennings, Blake Ferguson and Shaun Kenny-Dowall can all find their way to the try-line and will be tough for Penrith to contain.

I think where the Roosters are most vulnerable this week is in the halves.

James Maloney has already signed to go elsewhere next season and no matter how strong-minded you are, it’s never easy to concentrate fully on the task at hand when you know you’re on the move.

Mitchell Pearce, meanwhile, will swap the euphoria of playing in an Origin decider

in front of a sellout crowd at Suncorp Stadium with a trip to a cold Penrith Stadium just four days later – it’s never easy to adjust in those circumstances.

On the other side of the fence, Jamie Soward and Peter Wallace have certainly found their mojo and are controlling Penrith’s attack so well at the moment.

Wallace was desperately out of form prior to the match against the Tigers but has shown in the last two weeks why he is a genuine leader of this team.

I’m also expecting Nigel Plum and Jeremy Latimore to step up against one of the game’s best packs.

Against the Tigers a fortnight ago, the Panthers returned to form.

Against the Rabbitohs last week, they made a statement of intent to the rest of the competition.

Now it’s time to find out how legitimate Penrith’s claims are.

This is a big, big game – don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise. I expect it go to down to the wire.

enrith Panthers prop Jeremy Latimore says the reason for the club’s turnaround of late is that every single player is putting in.

After losing three straight games, the Panthers have now strung together two wins in a row and could be on the verge of a third when they play the Sydney Roosters this Saturday night at Pepper Stadium.

Last Friday night the Panthers put on their best performance of the season, stunning the defending premiers in South Sydney 20-6.

Speaking with Extra Time on Monday, 28-year-old Latimore said despite a season full of adversity, the Panthers are starting to come out the other end a stronger and more confident team.

“Leading into our last bye, they were probably our two worst games all year against the Eels and Storm. We started playing better against the Bulldogs but the last two weeks have definitely been good to win, especially defeating the defending premiers,” he said.

tries in their past two games against the Tigers and Rabbitohs, which Latimore says is a key to their recent good fortune.

“I think we’ve defended really well the last fortnight and that’s a cornerstone to any good team,” he said.

“Our forwards are starting to make metres and we’re starting to play a bit smarter now which is helping our attack, but we have to keep on improving.”

After completely dominating the Rabbitohs, the Panthers will now turn their attention to another one of the competition’s heavyweights in the Sydney Roosters.

Latimore believes there’s a strong rivalry between the two sides and can’t wait to go pound for pound against them on Saturday night.

“The Roosters have found form in the last month and Trent Robinson will have them fired up to come out here and play well,” he said.

“They beat us at the start of the year (20-12) and obviously we beat them in the semi-final last year, so there’s certainly a rivalry there.

“We’ve just got to build off what we’ve done the last few weeks and make sure we turn up on the weekend and do it again.”

anthers members have expressed their frustration after being told they’ll be asked to pay extra to attend round 20’s clash against Canberra at Penrith Stadium as part of a special community initiative.

The move, announced just three weeks out from the game, means that members will not be able to gain game day access with their usual pass and will have to prepurchase their seats.

As reported on the front page of the Weekender this week, the club is hoping to raise $100,000 on the day for the Ronald McDonald Nepean Family Room at Nepean Hospital. $10 from every adult ticket purchased and $5 from every junior ticket purchased will go to the hospital.

The Panthers say they originally “looked into the possibility” of taking the match against Canberra to Christchurch in New Zealand, but the plans have been shelved “in favour of giving Panthers members and fans another opportunity to support their team on home turf”.

While members were only ever sold 2015 packages based on 10 games being at Penrith Stadium, the frustration from fans comes because the Raiders match in round 20 was always scheduled for Penrith Stadium according to the NRL draw, which

With one of Penrith’s allocated 12 home games already shifted to Bathurst, fans were never told which of the 11 remaining matches scheduled for Penrith Stadium in the draw would be moved.

The situation has caused significant confusion because while membership packages were only sold for 10 games,

most expect a season pass entitles them to access all home matches played at Penrith Stadium.

“Whilst I understand why I’m spending around $800 a year on my family seats, I’m not sure I’m happy to pay close to another $100 to watch one game. I’m happy to pay $10 to charity on the day,” said supporter David Crellin on Facebook.

“How can a club charge a season ticket holder to go to a home game? Shame on you Penrith. What are the details so I can make a donation directly, I won’t be renewing my three season tickets next year, I’ll stay home to watch the game and you miss out on my beer and food money,” supporter Geoff Wall said.

“Feeling like season ticket holders have had a raw deal this year. As the season comes to an end casual members are getting more than the ones who come rain, hail and shine and support their team. I would be quite willing to donate to this cause but I feel I am being pressured to donate,” added Cheryl Hunt.

In response to the criticism, the Panthers released a Q&A sheet on their website on Tuesday.

Members were able to purchase their usual seat for the round 20 match from 9am on Wednesday.

PANTHERS BACK IN BUSINESS AFTER DOWNING SOUTHS 22-8 IN COME FROM BEHIND VICTORY Despite missing three of their best players to representative duty, the Penrith Panthers have managed to bounce back after last week’s shock loss to the Wests Tigers to defeat the South Sydney Rabbitohs 22-8 at Pepper Stadium.

With captain Brent Naden, centre Robert Jennings and prop Oliver Clark all unavailable due to U20s NSW Origin selection, the Panthers were forced to make some major changes with Dylan Edwards shifted to fullback, Logan Geyer named in the centres and Tyrone May listed in the halves.

The game didn’t begin as planned for the home side with South Sydney first to put points on the board through a penalty goal, after Penrith prop Moses Leota was sent to the bin in the 6th minute for repeated infringements.

With Souths up 2-0 early, the Bunnies managed to cross for their first try of the game not long after with fullback Devan Makoare Boyce collecting a Panthers kick inside his own in-goal before dodging the waiting defence and sprinting the length of the field to score.

It didn’t take long for Penrith to strike back with their first try of the game after Soni Luke sent a long ball straight into the hands of Logan Geyer, who smashed

through three defenders to find the line in the 22nd minute. Dylan Edwards missed the conversion which left the Rabbitohs up 8-4 at the break.

When the teams ran out onto the field for the second half, it was the Panthers who didn’t wait long to post more points with Tyrone May crossing in the 49th minute.

With Penrith now in front 10-8, they were in again just moments later after boom hooker Sione Katoa slipped the ball to Cowen Epere, who dominated two South Sydney defenders to claim a try under the posts. Edwards made the conversion which put the Panthers up 16-8.

With just minutes remaining before full-time, Kotoa managed to get his own meat pie after he spun out of a tackle and burrowed his way over the line to secure the 22-8 win.

The only blemish on Penrith’s 14-point victory was the serious injury to young gun Soni Hala, who dislocated his knee cap with five minutes to go.

The competition-leading Penrith Panthers will return to Pepper Stadium this Saturday afternoon to take on the sixth-placed Sydney Roosters. Kick off at 1.10pm.

The Panthers, coming off their last of three scheduled competition byes, face a tough run into the finals facing top eight opponents in seven of their last eight games, starting this week with the return game at Pepper Stadium against fourthplaced Wyong on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers went into the bye having been beaten in the last minute of play by the Roos at Central Coast Stadium courtesy of a Tyler Cornish field goal.

It was a game the Panthers should have had wrapped up leading 18-6 midway through the second half but a combination of poor goal-kicking, multiple errors when in possession and lack of discipline in defence, invited Wyong to snatch the game 19-18.

Wyong do seem to be one of those rare sides in the competition that handle Penrith better than most, having also defeated them 30-26 early in 2014 before the Panthers returned the favour defeating the Roos 32-24, but not without a fight from the Roos.

This game again showcases the competition’s two best defensive teams as both sides are the only teams to concede less than 20 points per game: Penrith (15.8 ppg) and Wyong (19.3 ppg).

Neither side is especially renowned

for its attack: Penrith scoring at 21.6 ppg (10th) and Wyong 22.9 ppg (7th), but such is the strength of the Panthers’ defence they still have the best differential in the competition of +82 points.

In team news, Wyong have made just the one change to the team that defeated Penrith last start with former Windsor Wolves player Leivaha Pulu in the backrow in place of Shaun Boss.

It’s a very strong side with seven players having 301 NRL games worth of experience including Omar Slaimankhel, Brendan Elliot and Samisoni Langi in the backs complementing a tough pack of forwards with the likes of Willie Manu, Lagi Setu, Matt McIllwrick and Lopini Paea.

Penrith, on the other hand, have made several changes for this clash. Robert Jennings returns in the centres as does Sione Katoa at hooker, while Ben MurdochMasila’s return from injury in the backrow to replace prop Sam Anderson (knee) will mean a reshuffle to Penrith’s line-up.

Prop Moses Leota becomes the seventh NSW Cup debutant for Penrith in 2015, having been named to replace Holden Cup teammate Stanton Albert on the bench. Kick-off between the Penrith Panthers and Wyong Roos is at 3.10pm.

ver been to see a theatre production and thought, ‘I’d really love to be up there’? Well, now’s your chance. The Penrith Musical Comedy Company will once again be bringing the Tony Award-winning musical comedy ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ to The Joan and audience members will have the chance to join in on the fun

as fellow spelling bee competitors alongside a cast of six actors.

“We actually get four people from the audience to sign up to be in the show,” explains Penrith Musical Comedy Company President, Grant Jones.

“They don’t know what happens and we as the actors tell them what they need to do throughout the show.

“Each show is different which is exciting as the cast don’t know who the audience spellers will be and lots of improvisation occurs depending on what the audience spellers do.”

It’s this audience participation that made the production such a success when the Penrith Musical Comedy Company first brought it to The Joan stage in 2011.

“It’s like sitting in a room with a whole bunch of friends, just having fun”

It did so well for the company that Grant knew they had to bring it back.

“We only did six shows last time and after that people enjoyed it so much that they were hoping one day we’d put it on again,” he said.

The show is set at the fictional Putnam Valley Middle School where a cast of six very different children are competing in a spelling bee. Each of the characters has their own little quirks and stories to tell as they each set out to take the title of top speller.

“You get taken on a bit of a journey with these kids,” Grant said.

“The audience sort of embraces the show... they just love it.”

Adding to the story is the unknown element of the audience spellers.

This mixture of fun storyline and improvisation has made the show comedy gold and a hit with audiences around the world.

For the Penrith production the majority of the 2011 cast will be back, along with a couple of new faces.

Rehearsals for the show are well under way and for Grant it’s been fun rediscovering characters, acting like a kid again and being back with fellow musical theatre enthusiasts.

“It’s like sitting in a room with a whole bunch of friends, just having fun,” he said.

For this production Grant takes on the character of William Barfee, a child that he describes as being not so easy to get along with.

“He’s a painful child,” Grant laughed.

“That’s probably the easiest way to describe him. He doesn’t have any friends and he learns to be nice to people.”

2015 has been a great year for the Penrith Musical Comedy Company with a successful production of the rap, hip hop and salsa infused Tony Award-winning musical ‘In The Heights’ premiering earlier in the year.

The show follows a cast of characters from the predominantly DominicanAmerican neighbourhood of Washington Heights in New York where bodega owner Usnavi is chasing the American dream.

“It went fantastically,” Grant said of the show.

“Audiences just embraced that show as well and absolutely loved it.”

From the success of the 2011 show, there’s no doubt that ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ will be another great success for the theatre company which has been bringing quality musical theatre to Penrith for decades now.

As for the 2016 season, there’s no confirmation on shows just yet but watch this space, because Grant has plenty of ideas up his sleeve.

‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ will be on at The Joan from Friday, July 31 to Saturday, August 15.

Performances are on at 8pm each Friday and Saturday night with an additional 2pm matinee on Saturday, August 8 and 15. Tickets are $20-$35.

his July fans of ‘The Voice’ winner Karise Eden will have a chance to hear tracks from her 2014 sophomore release ‘Things I’ve Done’ when she hits the Rooty Hill RSL stage.

In 2012, Karise Eden became the winner of the debut series of ‘The Voice’ after delighting audiences and judges with her soulful sound. After all four judges turned their chairs, Karise went on to choose Seal as her mentor.

After her win, Karise broke records with four tracks from her debut album ‘My Journey’ entering the top five on the ARIA singles chart. The album also debuted at top spot on the ARIA album charts and went double platinum.

For this release the talented singer/ songwriter wrote or co-wrote all but one of the tracks on the album. ‘Things I’ve

Done’ debuted in the ARIA Album Charts at number five and has since spawned the lead single ‘Dynamite’ and follow up single ‘Loneliness’. In June this year Karise also released a cover version of ‘Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow’ by The

Shirelles.

OVER the last two years the William Cox Historical Festival and Open Day at the Arms of Australia Inn Museum has celebrated the bicentenary of important colonial events and 2015 will mark the final chapter of this bicentenary trilogy.

Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott will be in attendance to unveil a plaque that will commemorate Governor Macquarie’s settlement in the area he called Bathurst in 1815, along with the 1813 crossing of the Blue Mountains by Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth and William Cox’s building of the road across the mountains in 1814.

The festival will offer activities for the whole family including a jumping castle, merry-go-round, pony and wagon rides, a range of stalls and plenty of delicious food.

The William Cox Festival and Open Day will be on at the Arms of Australia Inn Museum at Emu Plains on Sunday, July 19 from 9am to 3pm.

ove and literature come together in the world premiere of the theatre production ‘All My Love’ at The Joan this July.

‘All My Love’ is a theatre production which tells the story of the love affair between author and activist Mary Gilmore and writer and poet Henry Lawson at the turn of the 20th century.

Mary Gilmore met the young Henry Lawson and quickly struck up a friendship. But as their feelings grew, Mary found herself caught between Henry and his mother, well known writer and suffragette Louisa Lawson.

Writer Anne Brooksbank discovered the story of their relationship after researching Gilmore’s memoirs.

The production has been written using excerpts from the couple’s letters to each other and tells the story of their intense love affair.

This is an incredible, little known story from Australia’s past and one that will leave you amazed.

If you love a good love story then this is one show you won’t want to miss.

‘All My Love’ will be on at The Joan on Friday, July 17 at 8pm, Saturday, July 18 at 2pm and 8pm and Tuesday, July 21 at 11am (schools and matinee club).

new art exhibit will premiere at Braemar Gallery in Springwood later this month featuring works that celebrate the natural environment.

Artists Carola Rivera, Dot Wilkin and Corinne Loxton have joined forces to showcase their paintings which explore the value of nature and the human condition.

Each of the artists have spent time in the natural surrounds of areas like the Blue Mountains to draw inspiration for their works.

The works cover the vastly different landscapes that Australia has to offer, from the coastline to the outback.

Ê It appears as though Channel Seven could be dumping two games shows for a local version of ‘The Chase’. It’s been revealed that the show, based on the popular UK format of the same name, is currently being produced in Melbourne and could very well replace both ‘Deal or No Deal’ and ‘Million Dollar Minute’. If producers decide to make episodes run for an hour, ‘The Chase’ will start at 5pm which, if successful, will help boost ratings for the News at 6pm. There’s no word yet on whether the show will air this year or early next year. There’s also whispers Andrew O’Keefe could host the show. Ê ‘Family Feud’ will celebrate its first birthday on Tuesday, July 14 with Channel Ten marking the occasion across the entire week with prizes, flashbacks and a guest appearance. Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

That’s right, it’s Spongebob Squarepants!

Everyone’s favourite yellow sponge is back and this time he’s coming to dry land.

The eternally positive fry cook from the Krusty Krab in Bikini Bottom must make his way into the human world to recover the secret Krabby Patty formula after it’s stolen by a diabolical pirate named Burger Beard (Antonio Banderas).

Burger Beard has plans to make it rich with the delicious and super secret recipe until he is thwarted by Spongebob and his friends Patrick, Squidward and Sandy. Even their restaurant rival Plankton from the

Chum Bucket helps out in a bid to bring the delicious Krabby Patties back to Bikini Bottom.

Fans of the Nickelodeon series will surely love this flick. It’s got everything you want from a Spongebob film; fun, craziness, mischief, heaps of laughs and of course Krabby Patties!

Placing the animated characters in the live action world worked surprisingly well and there’s still plenty of underwater mayhem for those who aren’t a fan of the cartoon/real life crossover.

Whether young or old it’s hard not to enjoy the lovable Spongebob and its cast of crazy characters.

To celebrate their acclaimed ‘Two Strong Hearts’ tour Aussie icons John Farnham and Olivia Newton-John have released a live album which features a collection of highlights from the show.

The album sees the pair collaborate on well known hits including Farnham’s ‘Two Strong Hearts’, ‘You’re The Voice’, ‘Every Time You Cry’ and ‘Burn For You’ and Newton-John’s ‘Xanadu’, ‘I Honestly Love You’, ‘You’re The One That I Want’ and ‘Physical’.

It’s clear that the long time friends had a great time performing together, though vocally Newton-John just doesn’t stand up to the power of Farnham.

Regardless, this is a fun live recording and it’s clear from the album’s debut at top spot on the ARIA albums charts that audiences are eating it up.

‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ tells the story of a super-secret super-slick English spy organisation that takes on a less-than-polished street kid as their newest recruit after making his way through a competitive training program.

Agent Harry Hart (Colin Firth) recognises the potential in wayward teen

Gary ‘Eggsy’ Unwin (Taron Egerton) and takes him under his wing. Meanwhile the villain of the piece, tech genius Richmond Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson), is on a mission to implement his solution to climate change, which is to kill off as much of the population as possible.

This is a fun and action packed addition to the spy flick genre. The brilliance of ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ is that it never takes itself too seriously.

Though there’s plenty of violence it’s

often highly stylised which adds to the sense of comedy. The film is playful and tongue in cheek; it goes out of its way to lovingly poke fun at the genre. All the spy movie essentials are there including the maniacal villain and his sidekick who has swords for legs, plus a host of essential spy gadgets including bullet proof umbrellas and knife concealing leather shoes.

A SHOWCASE A OF PENRITH’S WORLD CHANGING POTENTIAL

n initiative for Aussies to help those suffering in Nepal, support for families of children in longterm hospital care, development of a peer to peer school tutoring program and enabling children with special needs to perform a dance eisteddfod.

A journey that began in February will this month reach its end, leaving a wake of lives changed and community improvement. 18 students from 4 schools have paired up with coaches from Penrith’s business and non-for-profit community to develop their abilities to set goals and achieve them. Students have each worked on a personal goal along with a community service project. Guests at the Max Potential Showcase will be able to wander around stalls individually created by each student to capture their personal journey and community involvement.

Fans brave the cold at the footy!

It was certainly cold at Pepper Stadium last Friday night but that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop fans from heading out to cheer on the Panthers.

A crowd of more than 14,000 braved the conditions to watch the Panthers power to a 20-6 victory over the Rabbitohs.

The Panthers scored some spectacular tries and fans were treated to a standout performance from rising star Bryce Cartwright.

Penrith currently sit in ninth position on the ladder, on the cusp of returning to the top eight and playing in the finals in September.

The Panthers return home this weekend to take on the Sydney Roosters, with a 5.30pm kickoff at Pepper Stadium on Saturday, July 11.

Chicken Soup Recipe FOOD

Ingredients • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • 1 medium onion, coarsely chopped • 3 medium carrots, peeled and diced • 1 medium celery stalk, diced • 1 leek (white section) • 1 parsnip peeled and diced • 1 swede peeled and diced • 1.5ltrs salt-reduced chicken stock • 500g chicken breast diced • 1 cup of flat leaf parsley • 100g of small shell pasta • ¼ teaspoon black pepper Preparation Prepare all veggies and fry off in oil in the base of a heavy based large pot for 5-10 minutes on medium heat, this process activates the natural sugars in the veggies.

Add stock and simmer for 35-40 minutes until veggies are tender.

Add pasta and bring to the boil, then add the chicken, it should be cooked at the same time the pasta is tender.

Season to taste, stir in the parsley and serve with a nice crusty bread roll.

The law recognises that sometimes people make decisions about who to leave their assets to that fail to take into account promises they’ve made during their lives, the needs of people who are dependent on them and the moral expectations of society, for example that a husband/wife should provide for his/her spouse in their will.

I am very proud of my running achievements that I have completed. My first run was in 2013 when I did the City2Surf 14km run, and then I did Run Sydney (10km).

In 2014 I did the Bay to Bay (12km), Gold Coast Marathon (10km) and the City2Surf again and this time I took seven minutes off my previous time. In three weeks time I will be competing in the Gold Coast Marathon again but this time doing my first Half Marathon increasing the distance to 21km.

A daily must do is to drink plenty of water. Throughout the day, our body is constantly reducing the amount of water our body has, so it is important to constantly replace these fluids. As we do physical activity we need to increase our water intake even more to increase our performance and to reduce the risk of dehydration.

Just because you exercise daily does not mean you can neglect your diet. The truth is exercise alone will not help you

A new study suggests giving young children regular bed times could help boost their brain power, researchers have found that inconsistent bed times are linked to children’s cognitive development and warned that there could be ‘knockon’ health effects throughout life.

The study, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, examined more than 10,000 children who are taking part in the Millennium Cohort Study – a long-term study

of children born in the UK between September 2000 and January 2002.

The research was drawn from regular surveys and home visits made when the children were three, five and seven to find out about family routines, including bed times.

When children were three, almost one in five had irregular bed times, but the figure reduced to less than one in 10 when the children were older.

By the age of seven, more than half the children went to bed regularly between 7.30pm and 8.30pm.

Children without regular bed times and who were put to bed after 9pm tended to come from more socially disadvantaged backgrounds, the researchers said.

They found that sevenyear-old girls who had irregular bed times had lower scores on all three aspects of intellect assessed, compared to children who went to bed at a regular time, but the effect was not found in boys.

Irregular bed times at age three were associated with lower reading, maths and spatial awareness scores in both boys and girls.

Anyone who’s been reading my column over the last few weeks will know that I often mention the importance of fruit and vegetables.

The reason this comes up so often is not just because they are full of vitamins and minerals but also because most of us don’t get our two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables each day.

With that in mind I thought I’d give you some practical tips on how to increase your intake. First off it’s important to understand what a serve looks like.

ing for 75g which equates to 1/2 cup of cooked vegetables or legumes, 1 cup of salad or 1/2 a medium potato.

For fruit the serving size is 150g which equates to 1 medium sized fruit, 1 cup of canned fruit, 1 and 1/2 tablespoons of dried fruit or 1/2 cup of fruit juice. Keep in mind that most of your daily serves should come from whole fruits as fruit juices are calorie dense and fibre poor.

For those who don’t like the taste of vegetables forcing yourself to sit down to a plate of plain steamed vegetables probably isn’t going to last very long.

Instead try stir frying them with some garlic, chilli or ginger to add some extra flavour or hide beans or vegetables in pasta dishes.

Aiming to have a few meat free meals each week is another great way to increase your vegetable intake. There’s a truckload of delicious vegetarian recipes available online at sites like www.taste. com.au or www.healthyfoodguide.com.au. If you have a few favourite recipes try swapping the meat component for mushrooms, which are often referred to as the meat of the vegetable world due to its hearty texture.

Fruit is a fantastic snack on its own but if you’re looking for different ways to serve it try replacing fruit flavoured yoghurts with plain greek yoghurt and cut up fruit or for a delicious summertime snack freeze fruits like bananas and oranges into segments.

Fruit can also be added to savoury dishes. Sultanas go great with coucous while pear is delicious in a salad with rocket, walnuts and feta.

With good planning and a little imagination you’ll be getting your 2 & 5 in no time!

exus has expanded its turbo engine model line-up with the launch of the IS 200t sports sedan.

IS will be the third Lexus vehicle to feature the luxury marque’s innovative new 2.0-litre turbo engine following the launch of the NX 200t compact SUV and announcement of the fourth generation RX 200t midsize SUV at the Shanghai International Motor Show in April.

Lexus Australia Chief Executive Sean Hanley said the IS was an ideal platform for the new powerplant.

“This very advanced engine has already proven itself and been valued by Lexus customers in the NX 200t,” he said.

“It will also be extremely well matched to the IS 200t, delivering excellent performance and fuel efficiency to complement the driving pleasure already offered by the IS.” The engine features a raft of performance and efficiency features including D-4ST fuel injection, water-cooled cylinder head, integrated exhaust manifold and twin scroll turbocharger.

It also has a state-of-the-art valve timing system VVT-iW to deliver enhanced fuel economy by allowing the engine to switch between the Otto and Atkinson cycles.

The transmission also varies gear shifts in accordance with G-forces.

Pricing and local specification will be announced at the time of launch.

hen local netballer Paige Hadley ruptured her ACL in March last year, she never dreamed that 18 months later she’d be representing Australia at next month’s Netball World Cup in Sydney.

During a routine training session with her Sydney Swifts teammates, Hadley seriously injured her left knee which resulted in the midcourter missing the entire 2014 ANZ Championship season as well as a place in Australia’s Commonwealth Games team.

Before her shocking injury, Hadley was regarded as one of this country’s best up and coming talents, having debuted for Australia the previous year.

But the St Clair junior’s comeback to the sport has been nothing short of remarkable. Not only did the 22-year-old help guide her Sydney Swifts teammates to a Grand Final appearance last month but she was also selected in the Australian Diamonds World Cup team after previously not being considered.

“It’s an amazing feeling to make the team, I didn’t think it would happen this quickly after my knee injury but to be back in the green and gold with the current world champions is pretty special,” Hadley told the Weekender.

“I was totally surprised to get the call up because I wasn’t initially in the squad at the start of season, and I didn’t even know you could make the team when you weren’t in the squad.

“When they phoned me and said ‘you’re in the final 12’, I was in complete shock. I asked if it was a joke, but it wasn’t.”

The 2015 Netball World Cup, which begins in Sydney on August 7, will see teams from 16 nations battle it out for netball world supremacy.

Hadley said representing Australia at a World Cup in her home town was nothing short of special.

“When my family and friends found out I made the Australian team there was a lot of tears and screams followed by them logging onto the Internet to purchase tickets,” she said.

Football Wanderers add Spanish flair to A-League playing squad NATHAN TAYLOR

f things don’t go according to plan at the Western Sydney Wanderers next season, at least they’ll have the chance to learn the flamenco after the club announced the addition of Spanish midfielder Andreu Guerao Mayoral to their 2015/16 playing squad.

A product of the Barcelona youth system, Andreu spent 12 years with the Catalan giants and made his first team debut in 2004 against Olympique de Marseilles during a tour of France.

Having spent the majority of his career in Spain, the central midfielder was a member of Racing Santander for the past two seasons where he earned a promotion from the Segunda B and reached the quarter finals of the 2013/14 Copa del Rey. Adding to his career achievements, the 32-year-old also appeared in the FIFA Club World Cup during a guest stint with Auckland City back in 2011.

Signing a two-year deal, Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said the Spaniard would make a good addition to the new Western Sydney line-up.

to add this sort of football pedigree to the playing squad,” he said.

“It is important to get players of the calibre of Andreu to add a significant backbone to our squad in the middle of the park.”

Andreu comes in under the salary cap, which means the Wanderers are still on the hunt for a major marquee signing.

Andreu is expected to arrive in Australia in the coming weeks to commence preseason training with the team.

Also this week, the Wanderers announced the signing of Socceroo Mitch Nichols from Japanese club Cerezo Osaka on a two-year deal.

The 26-year-old has a wealth of experience in the A-League, including a six season stint at Brisbane where he scored 21 goals and won two Championships plus a season at Melbourne Victory that earned him a contract at Cerezo Osaka.

The Socceroo has made five appearances representing Australia since 2009 and will no doubt be a great addition of depth to the squad.

Meanwhile, the Wanderers know their opening round opponents for the 2015 FFA Cup pre-season tournament, with the club drawing Brisbane Roar for the Round of 32 fixture.

he Penrith Emus may have won a lot of hearts over recent weeks but they’re still unable to win games, going down to Warringah last Saturday afternoon 69-17.

Played in front of their loyal home fans at Nepean Rugby Park, it was a much improved effort from the Emus, who were coming off their worst loss in years, 129-0 at the hands of Eastwood.

Interestingly, Penrith led the game against Warringah 14-7 before the Rats took a 29-17 lead heading into half-time.

Despite the game still being well in Penrith’s reach, they weren’t able to capitalise on their surprise first half form and let the game slip through their fingers.

Speaking with the Weekender, Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu said he was proud of his side’s recent performance but believed some refereeing blunders in the second half contributed to the scoreline.

“Absolutely I was pleased. The boys came back from a rough week and showed they could be competitive,” he said.

“Obviously the scoreboard ticked over in the second half but that was due to some controversial calls.”

Last weekend also saw Penrith’s other teams put in better performances with their second grade team losing 38-3, third grade 79-0 and fourth grade 28-7.

Tu’ipulotu admitted while Penrith’s cumulative score of 454-0 against Eastwood the week prior was embarrassing, it did shine a bright light on the club’s state of affairs at present.

“Of course it was embarrassing but it had been brewing for a long time, unfortunately it came to that point,” he said.

“Obviously the loss against Eastwood was expected but we needed people out there to know that we really need help.”

This Saturday afternoon Penrith will have their best chance at victory this season, or close to it, when they take on Parramatta at Merrylands.

The Two Blues have also endured a season from hell, winning just one game against the Emus earlier this year.

Tu’ipulotu admits he always looks forward to the western Sydney clash between two arch rivals.

“We’ll do a lot of hard work with the boys this week and we’ll be out there to compete. If we win then it’s a bonus,” he said.

“We should also be at full strength with everyone right to play.”

Mr Pentecost will do 60 kilometres around the former Olympic course on July 24 and 40 kilometres on July 25.

As for choosing which charity he raises funds for each year, Pentecost said it’s all about being local.

“It’s really important to invest our time and energy in the young leaders in the local community and I think Kokoda definitely does that,” Pentecost said.

“It’s a great initiative and a great idea and I’m really happy to be involved,” he said.

Last year, Lindsay MP Fiona Scott recognised Pentecost’s efforts in parliament.

anthers Wheelchair Rugby League captain, Nathan Pentecost, will be tackling the challenge of 100 kilometres in just two days around the Sydney International Regatta Centre this month to raise funds for the Kokoda Youth Leadership Project.

Pentecost will be undertaking his annual ‘Charity Push’ with a goal of raising $10,000, enough to send two young students on the trip of a lifetime.

“I’m looking for anyone who can sponsor me for this challenge,” Pentecost told the Weekender.

“The last lap is always extremely challenging but knowing I’ll have those supporters out there – that could really help me.”

The Kokoda Youth Leadership Project is run through Panthers on the Prowl, which aims to enhance opportunities for young people in the local area.

This will be the third year Pentecost has tackled the challenge of 100 kilometres around the Regatta Centre.

After last year’s efforts, he was successful in raising over $5,000 for Mama Lana’s Community Foundation.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers men’s Waratah Championship League side have continued their losing streak, beaten by the Maitland Mustangs 99-86 last weekend.

Noah Cleur was Penrith’s best player with 20 points and three rebounds.

sually free of any sort of controversy, Leonay’s Jessica Fox was well and truly in the thick of it last weekend after she was denied gold in the women’s C1 final at the third ICF slalom World Cup in Slovakia.

The 21-year-old flew down the Liptovsky Mikulas course to take the lead in a fast time of 113.47 with two paddlers remaining.

However, an appeal was lodged and Fox’s touch on gate 19 was adjudged as a miss, adding 50 seconds to her time and relegating the world champion to eighth in the final.

In Fox’s other individual event, she finished a disappointing ninth in the women’s K1 final.

Fox got off to a good start to be up by more than a second at the first split before things quickly spiralled out of control, leaving her well out of medal contention.

There was, however, some good news for the Penrith paddler and her younger sister Noemie over the weekend after they teamed up with fellow Australian Kate Eckhardt to win bronze in the women’s K1 teams final.

Interestingly, it was the first time that the Fox sisters have shared a world cup podium.

With bronze in the K1 teams final, Fox took her world cup medal tally to five and believes she’s in a good place with two world cups remaining before the World Championships.

“Overall, I am happy I hit form for the first World Cup in Prague and that is a positive thing for me to build on for the next round of World Cups and the worlds, even if last week and this weekend were not as good as I had hoped for,” she said.

The World Champs are in September.
