Penrith City Council has taken the strong step of inviting private investors to make bold and innovative proposals on the development of two Council owned sites on Reserve Street and Union Road.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said the move to call on partners to ‘Invest in the New West’ is about building relationships with businesses, who can realise the potential of jobs and inner city living.

“Council recognised that we can’t do it all by ourselves and the best way to maximise the potential of the area is to partner with investors,” she said.

“It is not the core business of Council to be a developer, but bringing jobs to Penrith, attracting business to come and invest in the area and to provide quality housing is what we need.”

Over a 12 month period, Council’s Penrith Progression project established a clear vision for the future that will boost Penrith’s identity as a regional city.

The Penrith Progression plan outlined six different ‘Opportunity Precincts’ that could transform the city, including the Reserve Street and Union Road sites.

Studies were undertaken by Council to identify specific uses for the sites, as part of a wider strategic plan to connect and activate the city centre.

“Rather than just having development spring up here and there, this way we are reaching out and can have input in shaping the city.”

The Union Road site is split into two sections, with the eastern section at 3836 square metres and the western section at a massive 15,627 square metres.

Developers could propose a mix of residential, leisure, commercial, entertainment, restaurants or boutique retail on the site, but not large retail.

“Large shopping centres certainly have their place but people like to have that choice in the mix of boutique type shops,” Cr McKeown said.

“Any development there will certainly bring a lot more night time economy into the CBD, with people just walking around and activating the area.”

But don’t fret, Council has a long list of development requirements for Union Road proposals, including 1000 car spaces for the large western side.

“That will be a condition of the develop-

“It is most definitely achievable. We have done the modelling for it, it’s just a matter of if a developer decides that it’s in their best interest.”

The Reserve Street site is part of a previously identified ‘Living Well Precinct’ for baby boomers, that sits between Nepean Village and High Street.

The 4337 square metre site’s central location to community services and amenities makes it ideal for a future aged care facility.

“We want to provide aged care living to cater for the full range of residents who live here,” Cr McKeown said.

The use of the two sites was advised by an experienced team of property developers that form Penrith’s Property Development Advisory Panel (PDAP).

PDAP Chair, Sean O’Toole, ensured while the team advises Council, the final decision on development and developers rests with Council itself.

“I think they are very smart for bringing in independent people who have good experience so they don’t get themselves into trouble,” he said.

“We have been able to look at it from the perspective of developers, making sure proposals encourage development and spend later on.”

Mr O’Toole said the benefits of Council’s wider strategic plan means more flexibility and opportunity for projects with big impact.

“Council owns nearly 48 hectares of land in the CBD and by developing it smartly, they can get some really good outcomes for the city,” he said.

The push to take the next step for the two central areas is a proactive response to some future major external influences.

By 2031, Penrith’s population is predicted to have increased to 260,000, with an economic catchment of one million.

With the third lowest departure rate in Sydney, Council needs to accommodate an extra 25,000 dwellings and create 40,000 more jobs by that time.

In addition, the proposed western Sydney airport will sit just 11 kilometres from Penrith’s city centre and the two sites when it opens in 10 years, making Penrith a central hub to service the surrounding growth centres.

Stage One of the process invites investors to submit Expressions of Interest, which close in January.

’m a sucker for history.

There’s a good chance I’m the only 30-something bloke in the world who spent last Friday night watching old episodes of ‘Ozzie and Harriet’, a 1950s comedy that has long been forgotten by most.

And on Sunday, I found myself at Hoyts Cinemas in Penrith, not watching the latest James Bond blockbuster, but sitting down to the 1990 flick ‘Home Alone’, which was being screened to celebrate its 25th anniversary.

The film is the first I remember seeing at the movies with my Dad as a kid, and it’s always stuck with me.

Like any history buff, I also have boxes and boxes of old newspapers.

The collection includes plenty of local Penrith papers from the past, including old editions of the Weekender and the Nepean Times, which was this area’s main newspaper for decades.

While the advertisements may be dated and quite often sexist by today’s standards, there’s often a common theme when it comes to stories on Penrith that very rarely changes through the decades.

That theme surrounds one word: opportunity.

Penrith has always been considered a land of opportunity, but one would have to admit, it has never quite reached its full potential as a city.

The action has never quite matched the talk and unfortunately, Penrith still lives with a stigma that should have been tossed aside decades ago.

That’s not to say the city does not have a sensational platform from which to grow.

that even local residents probably either didn’t know about or took for granted.

It fixes the holes that existed in the ‘Penrith is Here’ campaign from a few years ago.

Two things are key to ensuring Penrith takes its opportunity in the next few years, and doesn’t simply leave it behind and create more talk.

The first is the success of the new airport at Badgerys Creek, which promises significant economic and cultural benefits to Penrith.

However, it simply must be built with adequate infrastructure including a rail line, otherwise it threatens to become a white elephant.

Governments can release as many reports as they like, those who use Sydney’s road and public transport network every day know how important a rail link will be to the airport’s ultimate success.

The second is investment in Penrith itself both internally and by outsiders.

As reported on our front page this week, Penrith City Council has invited private investors to make bold and innovative proposals on the development of two Council owned sites on Reserve Street and Union Road.

They are significant CBD sites and Council’s vision is a good one, but it must come to fruition.

So must other key projects, like a city centre park, which was discussed at Council’s Ordinary Meeting on Monday.

Council needs to find a way to redefine parts of Penrith and breathe life into its various sectors.

Through its Penrith Progression concept, it has outlined an impressive plan to do this, but again, it needs to actually happen and it can’t be just talk.

The current Council is a strong one that has already shown it will put political differences aside to work together for the betterment of Penrith. This is an enormous plus for our city.

Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as ‘Sim City’ (another part of my history fun last weekend). You can’t just move buildings and create dreams with the click of a mouse or the swipe of a finger.

Yes, among other things, we need a city park that gets people talking and becomes a vibrant part of our city.

And yes, we need a restaurant strip so we can create a legitimate night time economy and not have our dining options spread so vastly through the city.

It’s time for talk of opportunity to not just be part of history, but part of the present as well. Penrith’s time has come, but will we make the most of it?

Questions raised over music festival Thain requests report into Defqon.1 incidents as event’s future is questioned

fter almost doubling in size since its inception in 2009, Defqon.1 could face an uncertain future.

The annual music festival began as a one time, one day festival for a maximum of 15,000 people.

In its sixth year, Defqon. 1 now draws in up to 30,000 people, and accommodates 500 campers for two nights at the Sydney International Regatta Centre.

The Friday and Saturday night event was approved until 2019, but has been causing concerns over noise and the safety of patrons.

In a meeting on Monday night, Councillor John Thain requested more information come back to Council comparing the impacts from year to year.

“I don’t want to be a ‘wowser’ and kill this off,” he said.

“But I ask Council to keep the discussions going with the people who put on Defqon. 1.”

Cr Thain said he wants to see statistics on incidents over the years, that can compare the festival from when it was one night to when it moved to two nights.

“Before it was two nights I don’t think we really had any serious incidents,” he said.

“I am extremely concerned about the drug usage. We’ve even had a death, and I find that totally unacceptable,” he said.

Glenmore Park: Man who broke into homes arrested

Werrington: Teenage girl indecently assaulted

Police have arrested a man who allegedly broke into several homes in the Glenmore Park area recently.

After being caught on CCTV footage at one home in Glenmore Park, police were able to establish a description of the man, who they eventually located at Macquarie Fields.

At about 10am on Tuesday, December 1, police arrested the 30-year-old man at Macquarie Fields and took him in for questioning.

He was charged with ‘break and enter with intent to steal’ and ‘stealing’ for the offence caught on CCTV at the Glenmore Park address among 12 other offences in the Macquarie Fields area, including four in relation to break and enter.

Police are appealing for information after a student was allegedly indecently assaulted in Werrington last week.

Just after 1.50pm on Wednesday, December 2, a 17-year-old girl left school and was walking home along Dunheved Road in Werrington when she was approached by a man. Police have been told the man asked for directions before indecently assaulting the student.

She managed to flee the area and reported the incident to a parent, who contacted police. Officers attached to St Marys Local Area Command are investigating.

He is described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 35-40-years-old, about 175cm to 180cm tall, with short brown hair.

He was seen wearing a grey t-shirt.

Londonderry: RSPCA now dealing with fighting claims

Colyton: Man stabbed, rushed to Westmead Hospital

Police attended a home on Bowman Road in Londonderry on the weekend after they were tipped off about suspected cockfighting going on at the residence.

At about 12pm on Sunday, December 6, police arrived at the address to conduct inspections.

On arrival, officers found many chickens and roosters being housed at the residence, some including American roosters which are common in the illegal activity.

A number of suspicious parties were also at the address.

Police conducted initial investigations but then passed the matter on to the RSPCA.

Police are appealing for assistance after a man was stabbed at Colyton.

About 6.45pm on Tuesday, December 8, emergency services responded to reports that a man had been stabbed on Leonard Street, Colyton.

On arrival, officers from St Marys Local Area Command found a man, aged 23, with a stab wound to the side of his upper body.

He was taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Officers have been told that a short time after the stabbing a silver car was seen leaving the area.

Witnesses are urged to contact police.

Car drives push for plastic bag ban They’re convenient and cheap, but plastic bags cause significant environmental damage current ban in the ACT, where retailers are unable to provide single-use, lightweight polyurethane bags of 35 microns or less.

If passed, retailers will be able to charge for alternative, re-usable bags or provide the heavier style retail bags that are usually used by clothing stores.

Other bags that do not fall under the ban include ‘barrier’ bags for loose fruit and vegetables, biodegradable bags, paper bags, bin liners, and of course reusable bags such as ‘green’ bags.

Shadow Minister for the Environment, Penny Sharpe, said the policy is reasonable to reduce the number of plastic bags that end up in our environment.

“Across the country, hundreds of thousands of plastic bags end up in our waterways and bushlands,” she said.

“It’s an environmental nasty that can easily be reduced by reasonable policies on plastic bags.”

Opposition Leader, Luke Foley, said the Government has an obligation to take reasonable and sensible steps to protect the environment for future generations.

Labor intends to bring forward legislation through a Private Member’s Bill for debate in Parliament next year.

Labor will introduce a bill to the NSW Parliament next year to ban the bags, and has called on the Government for bipartisan support.

State Member for Londonderry, Prue Car, has supported the ban, which other states and territories already have in place.

“Banning the sale of single use plastic bags is an environmental protection initiative the Government can easily get behind,” she said.

“Plastic bags have already been banned in South Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the ACT with a proposal being considered in Queensland.”

Ms Car said the impact of plastic bags on the environment is clear.

“It is estimated that in NSW alone, up to 61 million lightweight plastic bags are littered each year,” she said.

“This is a sensible step to ensure that we see less plastic bags clogging our drains and polluting our bush lands.”

Motorists warned to expect delays on busy local roads

enrith Council is calling out for mobile food vans to submit Expressions of Interest to set up in Regatta Park, Emu Plains.

Business owners are invited to come forward to provide refreshment services to the public in a bid to enhance the appeal of the park.

A Council spokesperson said Regatta Park is a great location for a mobile van, that already sees high foot traffic during the week and for special events.

“Just last weekend on Friday and Saturday night, we had the outdoor cinema and over 1000 people came,” she said.

“It’s geographically in a great spot, near where the Nepean River Green Bridge will be that is a little further north of Regatta Park.

“It’s also part of the Nepean River walk, where thousands of people basically walk straight through the park.”

The call for Expressions of Interest comes after one local business owner approached Council to operate a mobile van.

This business owner had previously approached Council to open a kiosk in the existing toilet block in 2012, but was turned down due to flooding concerns.

ocal motorists are urged to be wary of changed traffic conditions at The Northern Road and the M4 Motorway intersection.

From Wednesday, State and Federal Governments began undertaking investigation work for Stage Three of the $1.6 billion, 35 kilometre upgrade of The Northern Road.

State Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies said investigations include drilling boreholes and excavation work.

“Work will be underway between Wednesday, December 9 and Friday, January 29 from 8am to 4pm and 7pm to 6am excluding Saturdays and weather permitting,” she said.

“No work will be carried out during the Christmas holiday period between December 24 and January 4.”

Mrs Davies recommended to allow extra travel time, and drive with caution as there will be changed conditions.

The Northern Road upgrade is a key project in the $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan to transform road infrastructure.

Holidays cause payment changes

Six day search for missing Norman has a happy ending JADE ALIPRANDI

fter an intense six day search and numerous calls put out to the public, Norman Woodford, of Emu Plains, was found earlier this week.

The 78-year-old had last been seen at about 10.45am on Wednesday, December 2, at his Emu Plains home before his family reported him missing that afternoon.

Mr Woodford was found at about 2.30pm on Monday, December 7, in bushland off Old Bathurst Road in Emu Heights by police, with assistance from Blue Mountains Local Area Command rescue units.

It’s not the first time Mr Woodford has made headlines for disappearing, with a similar police search held in September.

He also went missing for a staggering six days two years ago, and was found near the Nepean River on Christmas Day 2013, just in time for a holiday miracle.

“The 78-year-old was transported to Nepean Hospital in an unwell state, and appeared to be suffering from exhaustion and dehydration,” a police spokesperson said on Monday.

There was a report received by police that Mr Woodford was seen by a member of the public at about 10.30am last Thursday, December 3, on Russell St in Emu

Department of Human Services customers will notice some changes to payments and services over the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

Department of Human Services General Manager, Hank Jongen said all service centres and most phone lines providing Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support services will be closed from December 25 to 29 and on New Year’s Day. Mr Jongen said the Department’s Express Plus mobile apps and phone selfservice options, as well as online services through myGov, would still be available.

“The best way to check your reporting dates, update your details and report your earnings quickly and easily is by taking advantage of these options over the holiday period,” Mr Jongen said.

“Payments will not be delayed by the holiday period but in some instances you may be paid earlier, so you may need to budget for a longer period between payment dates afterwards.

“Customers may also need to report their job search efforts or income early if their usual reporting date falls on a public holiday.

“When reporting, you must include estimates of earnings or other changes for your normal 14 day assessment period.

Although your reporting date may be different, the assessment period remains the same.”

There are no changes to the usual child support payment arrangements, however parents should note late payments may be further delayed by public holidays.

Fair Trading issues summer warning 78-year-old Norman Woodford, who went missing from Emu Plains last week, was found alive on Monday Plains, and was said to be confused and disoriented.

Grave concerns were held for his welfare as he has ongoing medical conditions that require constant treatment.

Police officers from Penrith Local Area Command thanked the community and members of the media for their assistance in locating Mr Woodford.

He was still recovering in hospital on Tuesday afternoon. It is understood that he is doing well.

Fair Trading Commissioner Rod Stowe is urging families to be vigilant in the coming months about the dangers presented by pools, barbecues, gas cookers and inadequately maintained balconies and decks.

“Summer means more of us spending time outdoors but that lifestyle living doesn’t come without potential risks, especially where children are concerned,” Mr Stowe said.

On average, 11 children under five drown in NSW every year, with a further 62 children admitted to hospital after being rescued.

According to the 2015 Royal Life Saving Society report, swimming pools

accounted for 54 per cent of drowning for children under five.

Mr Stowe urged parents and supervisors to never leave young children unattended, regardless of the depth of the pool. Children must be kept within arms’ reach and have their flotation and inflatable pool toys checked for signs of wear and tear.

“Toddlers are the most at-risk group for drowning. Without active adult supervision, even a few centimetres of water can prove fatal,” Mr Stowe said.

“Like everyone in the community, Fair Trading would like to see these tragic figures significantly reduced.”

Council lays the platform for development of ‘central park’ DALE DRINKWATER

llen Place car park is one step closer to becoming a central park.

The planning proposal to rezone a section of the car park from B3 Commercial Core and RE1 Public Recreation to B4 Mixed Use was endorsed by Penrith Council and is now awaiting approval from the State Government.

Deputy Mayor, Ross Fowler, said the rezoning proposal will enable a central park, that will facilitate the transformation of the Penrith CBD. “It also enables buildings around it that will activate that area and create a catalyst for the future of the city centre,” he said.

“It really is an important initiative for this Council, this is the start of a central park and I do think it should be grasped with both hands.”

A small section of the site in the northwest corner along Henry and Station Streets will remain zoned R4.

Rezoning the rest of the site is expected to allow greater flexibility with mixed use developments that complement one another and integrate the area.

All councillors except Councillor Marcus Cornish voted for the rezoning.

Cr Cornish said he doesn’t want to lose any more car park spots.

This week we’re putting the finishing touches on our response to the Federal Government’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and Airport Plan for the new airport at Badgerys Creek.

Our response reaffirms our conditional support for Australia’s largest infrastructure project while calling for assurances the airport will bring maximum benefits to Penrith.

As community members, you have until Friday, December 18 to make sure your comments will be considered by the Federal Government.

Since its release in October, Council has carefully considered the likely impacts on Penrith and have already expressed concerns to Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss about the majority of flight paths being over Penrith.

Mr Truss has assured us these are just indicative and any airspace plans will be the subject of further design and assessment.

Council also contributed to an indepth, independent review of the EIS with other affected Councils.

Our responsibility is to ensure Penrith secures the maximum benefits and an airport that is truly embedded

in the region alongside impacts that are diligently assessed and acceptable to our community.

The EIS was the first step on a long road and we’ll be working with the Government closely to ensure our community is represented in all decisions being made.

We’re reiterating the airport should have a curfew – if it’s good enough for Mascot, it’s good enough for the communities of the west. If the airport is to operate without a curfew, our view is that the communities that are hardest hit should not have to bear the brunt of this 24 hours a day.

And we’ll continue to push for a rail link before the airport opens.

Our transport infrastructure is already on life support and the EIS predicts stage one of the airport will create 42,000 more vehicle movements each day. We’re adamant the airport must have a rail link from day one that will not only connect the airport to the Western Line but also allow more efficient movement between the North and South West Growth Centres.

Government commits to tackling drug epidemic DALE DRINKWATER

housands of methamphetamine users and their families across Lindsay will see more support to battle against the ‘Ice’ epidemic.

The final report from the National Ice Taskforce has been released, and has provided a clear direction for a $300 million Commonwealth investment to eradicate the destructive drug.

Federal Member for Lindsay and anti-Ice crusader, Fiona Scott, said Ice continues to be a major and growing issue in the western Sydney community.

“Sadly, western Sydney has one of the highest methamphetamine usages, proportionately, in the world,” she said.

“Approximately 2000 people locally are using Ice. We need to help these people, their families and our community to eradicate this scourge from our community.”

Ms Scott made a submission to the Taskforce highlighting this “epidemic” in Lindsay, after a community forum in April.

“I would like to thank the Lindsay community for the constructive feedback and insights they have provided that formed the basis of our local submission,” she said.

“I am pleased the National Ice Taskforce has not only taken up the major issues identified by our Lindsay Community Ice Forum, they are providing solid funding.”

Of the four year $300 million investment, $13 million will increase the availability of treatment, $24.9 million will help families and communities respond and $18.8 million will establish better research, evidence and guidelines on Ice. The largest investment, $241.5 million, will improve access to treatment through Primary Health Networks (PHN), such as the Nepean Blue Mountains PHN. Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, said utilising PHNs will draw on their local knowledge of each area.

“The Government understands that local knowledge is best. That is why our local PHNs will work with communities to determine what form of treatment will be most effective in each local area,” he said.

“Given the close correlation between mental health and drug abuse, we have closely aligned delivery of drug and alcohol treatment services with the delivery of mental health packages through PHNs.” The measures from the package will form part of the new National Ice Action Strategy, that will be considered at the next Council of Australian Governments meeting.

Traffic chaos looms Regarding the northbound right-hand turn on Mulgoa Road into the new Masters store at Penrith, I can see massive traffic problems. I feel that the length allowed for the turning lane is too short.

This is going to lead to a bank up of traffic there. My question is, why wasn’t an underpass, using the same design as the one leading into the Homemaker Centre, built for the Masters site instead of a set of traffic lights? There seems to be a lack of foresight here on the part of the site owners, the architects and Penrith Council. As that other person said, “please explain”.

School needs air con I totally agree with the parents and students of that school, as I went to that school myself only a few years ago, those classrooms get beyond hot, especially given that the majority of the classroom blocks are inside, it traps the heat! (Fix this now, Weekender December 4). Fans only do so much, on a hot day like that 40-odd degree day, fans will only circulate the heat. People forget when children go to school in that heat, it is hard to concentrate, their work won’t be done to their best, because simply they can’t think straight.

Kids kept home from school I refuse to send my kids to school if it’s going to be 37 degrees and over. Yes they have air-conditioning in the classrooms but recess and lunch times they are locked outside. Lunch time is the worst as it’s in the peak of the heat. Plus there is no canteen at the school. I get lectures saying that I’m making my children “soft” but I don’t want to put them through what I went through.

Council’s airport support in tatters “We can start calling Penrith soot city”: Crameri says local region has been treated with contempt DALE DRINKWATER

nadequate and inconsistent is how Penrith Council described the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the western Sydney airport.

A meeting on Monday night presented the findings of an independent peer review of the EIS that will be submitted to the Federal Government.

The peer review identified ‘inadequacies of the draft EIS’ such as gaps in information and the ‘limited scope’ of the Stage 1 assessment.

It said the assessment of the EIS relied on a flight path and merge point design that only considered operation and aviation safety, not the environment.

Councillor Prue Car said Council has been very critical over the findings of the peer review.

“There are no alternative flight paths in the EIS, and that’s a big concern to Penrith and every Councillor around this chamber,” she said.

From these findings, all present Councillors requested that the Federal Government does not approve the Stage 1 Development of the airport.

However, they were divided over

whether or not Council should continue to have a seat at the table during airport discussions.

Councillor Kevin Crameri said Penrith has been treated with contempt by the Federal Government, and should stop working alongside them.

“We can start calling Penrith soot city,” he said.

“If we were actually on the inside working with these people, we should have known it was going to be a 24 hour airport.”

Councillor Maurice Girotto suggested that so far having a ‘seat at the table’ with the Federal Government has not been beneficial to Penrith.

“We have been at the table, and we got flight paths out of supporting the Federal Government,” he said.

Despite the mounting pressure to cut ties, Council will continue to work alongside the Federal Government.

Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler said refusing to continue to work with the Government takes Penrith completely out of the game.

“We can’t talk to anyone, we can’t participate,” he said.

“It’s a fact of life. The sun is going to rise tomorrow, and there is going to be an airport at western Sydney.”

Rail the key talking point at lunch Chamber function gives important insights into development of western Sydney’s new airport DALE DRINKWATER

he western Sydney airport has brought together an all-star cast of local, state and federal politicians as well as economists and business owners.

The Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce hosted a luncheon to address concerns over the airport’s draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

Speaking at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club, David Borger from NSW Business Chamber said they want to ensure the right information is passed on to western Sydney Chamber members.

“This is a western Sydney airport, and western Sydney should benefit from it,” he said.

“In the next 10 years, more people will be living in the west than in the east.”

The Department of Infrastructure’s Brendan McRandle, said this increase in population will put enormous pressure on both the economy and infrastructure.

“By 2035, the national economy would lose $6 billion... and in the long term NSW would lose 57,000 jobs,” he said.

Mr McRandle said the western Sydney airport would create new employment opportunities to tackle the jobs deficit.

“As the airport matures, it will create 61,000 jobs to operate it.

“We need to keep our eyes on the prize for these longer term benefits, and realise these jobs will come.”

He argued the proposed airport is a catalyst for wider infrastructure, such as rail to

service western Sydney. Rail has been one of the airport’s biggest talking points.

“We would not be talking about rail if the airport announcement had not occurred... but getting access to aviation is not simple,” he said.

Although Penrith is only 11 kilometres and 25 minutes from the airport site at Badgerys Creek, Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said road access is not enough.

“If there is a major incident on that road, goodness knows how we will ever get north to south,” she said.

“This is not Sydney’s second airport, it’s our airport. We will make the most of every chance to be heard.”

Without rail, every single user of the new airport would be forced onto Sydney’s already busy road network, either in private cars or via buses.

Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres said the Government won’t jump into decisions just prematurely.

“Would you buy it with your own money if you were not going to use it now?” he asked.

“The North West Rail Link could have cost us one third of what it did if we planned it properly.”

The lights at ImagineNations Church Penrith is being treated to a massive Christmas lights display at ImagineNations Church.

The church, on the corner of the Northern Road and M4 Motorway, has completed its display that consists of a large Aussie Christmas lights themed section and a traditional Bethlehem Christmas presentation.

It is a family friendly event for all ages and runs over two weekends in December (11-13 and 18-20).

It will open from 7.30pm with food and coffee available for purchase (proceeds go to local charity WestCare Community Services) as well as entertainment for the kids.

The lights will be switched on from 8.30pm and run until 11.30pm.

The church plans to add more themed displays in the coming years.

14-year-old Jazmine Alessio has made it to the Nationals of Junior Miss Teen Australia 2015 after smashing the State Finals last month.

Miss Teen Australia NSW Event Organiser, Grant Dwyer, said Jazmine really made an impact.

“She was one of the standout models at the NSW State Finals and there was an exceptionally high standard of entrants this year,” he said.

Jazmine is an aspiring model, but the pageant journey has taught her more than just how to stand out in a crowd.

“I was really nervous coming up to it, but mum encouraged me to get myself out there and have a go,” she said.

“My confidence has grown. I was confident before but it often takes me a while until I get to know people and warm up.

This has helped me get out there a bit more.”

Jazmine hopes the state finals gave her enough experience to make it to the end of the Miss Teen Australia National Finals from January 14 to 17 next year.

Jazmine’s mum, Gebena Alessio, said she is proud of her daughter who has slowly come out of her shell since the beginning of Miss Teen Australia.

“I’m exceptionally proud. Jazmine can be a bit of an introvert and I think this is actually bringing out the extrovert in her,” she said.

Ms Alessio said the competition is helping develop her daughter’s maturity, and her care for herself both internally and externally.

“When we went to the State Finals recently she was very confident in her walk, she looked at the audience and she wasn’t scared,” she said.

“She wants to get out there and show other girls it’s not all about just being beautiful but it’s about being confident in yourself to be able to do it.”

wimming teacher Sean Webber, of St Marys, is set to make a splash after being appointed to the NSW Government’s advisory body, the Disability Council of NSW. Mr Webber has cerebral palsy but hasn’t let that stop him teaching people of all ages and disabilities to swim in the Penrith region for more than 14 years.

The Disability Council provides independent advice on matters that affect people with disability in NSW as well as their families and carers.

“Being appointed to the Disability Council is an amazing honour,” Mr Webber said.

“It’s only because of all the supportive people in my life that I have been able to achieve the things I have and I hope that I in turn can make a difference to the lives

of other people through being a member of the Disability Council.”

Mr Webber and his mother, Judy Webber, designed the Achievers Program that is currently running at Nepean Aquatic Centre in Penrith, with over 50 disabled swimmers currently enrolled.

The aims of the program are to deliver a healthy and professional learning environment, provide the swimmer with a pathway from learn to swim to competitive swimming, to swim for fun, learn survival skills for life and set the environment for confidence building.

“Running the Achievers Program with mum works really well, because she has a great understanding from the disabled swimmers’ parents’ point of view, and can relate to the challenges they face by having a disabled child,” Mr Webber said.

his year I have actively been attempting to take my own advice and stop multitasking.

In reality it has been more a case of trying to reduce rather than completely eliminate!

But it is a start.

But a few days ago I caught myself at a particularly bad multitasking moment: I had five different screens and programs open on my computer (moving back and forth between a number of jobs and social media), I was checking the calendar on my phone and scribbling reminders on my notepad and, to top it all off, eating lunch at the same time.

I know it’s a sign of my busiest time of year, where all my usual habits for planning and prioritising go out the window.

But that is where the excuses need to end! Because as I just alluded to, it involves re-writing and creating new habits.

Unfortunately, although my ‘rest of year’ habits have improved, as soon as ‘crazy end of year’ time came into play, the habits were forgotten.

Are you in the same boat, either in your busy times or all year around?

Here are some tips to change your work patterns and ditch the multitasking!

1. Stop and tidy up. Most of us don’t keep a completely clean desk or work space 100 per cent of the time.

Clearing the clutter, filing and cleaning up has a great impact on your ability to focus on tasks.

2. Write out your tasks for the day and/ or week. And then spend some time prioritising them.

This doesn’t have to be an exact science or follow a prescribed ‘system’.

It may be as simple as circling the urgent jobs or doing all the little tasks first.

3. Turn off your email and social media notifications.

Instead, set a time limit and check only at those times.

These tips are just a start, but will go a long way to helping you focus on all the things that need to be done, reducing distractions and increasing your productivity.

We are so busy that looking ahead often becomes difficult. It’s a trap, in order to succeed you need to know what’s ahead to better plan and stay clear of danger.

Trends we are seeing now will continue to be given more attention including messaging apps, podcasts, web-rooming/ show-rooming, crowd funding, 3D printing and more. Scary words for people that don’t know too much about them.

To succeed in today’s competitive business environment, more and more small businesses are prioritising marketing, and new research finds.

The face of entrepreneurship is changing from the white middle-aged college educated male to a new class consisting of immigrants, baby boomers, and the younger digital generation.

These groups are better prepared for success. The boomers have many skills and experiences while the youth possess a risk-taking attitude with very few financial commitments.

We have young sole traders working

efficiently, running businesses without employees, operating in a low-cost location such as the home office and outsourcing many functions.

We also have a fast aging population, a rapid declining pool of younger workers combined with global competition. This means small businesses will have to compete aggressively for talent and learn how to fully engage the hearts and minds of employees.

We are in an innovation age. Recently we have seen greater political clout and financing for small business. Our true competitive advantage is our ability to create and execute new business ideas.

We continue to learn the fundamentals of business such as sales or marketing, but we are still grasping the concept of innovation. Smarter competitors will leap ahead with the understanding that innovation is a now a process dependent system versus a sudden bit of genius.

The lesson is that a new type of competitive advantage is required, one that is researched and innovative so that is doesn’t just keep you ahead of competitors, it adds a new product or service.

Turning back Time One year ago...

The Western Weekender features the biggest local exclusive of the year on December 12, 2014.

After a harrowing month locked away in a Chinese detention centre as the subject of drug trafficking suspicions, Penrith resident Kalynda Davis is brought home after a mercy dash by her father.

The story brings the nation’s media to Penrith but despite the cameras and microphones at his doorstep, Kalynda’s father Larry chooses to speak exclusively to the Weekender.

Ms Davis was never charged with a crime, but was the subject of a 30-day investigation by Chinese officials that revealed her innocence; the result her family knew was the only possibility.

“Her and I are close, as close as any father and daughter could be. I never once thought that she had done anything wrong,” dad Larry told the Weekender.

“I knew she was so innocent. I prayed every night that the truth would come out, I prayed for the authorities, that it was dealt with in the way that it was dealt with, and our prayers were answered.”

The story detailed information about Kalynda’s horrible experience inside the detention centre and her relief at being home.

Crime that shook Penrith

Lauren Hickson

T

his is the angelic face of Lauren Hickson, the four-year-old girl caught up in the biggest murder case in Penrith’s history.

Her beautiful smile is a reminder of the day when innocence was well and truly lost in this part of the world.

On May 17, 1989 Lauren was killed by Neville Raymond Towner. The details of the murder are simply too chilling to print.

The murder rocked the wider Penrith area to its core and created extreme anger towards Mr Towner from the community.

The May 19, 1989 edition of The Sydney Morning Herald featured the front page headline: “Lauren’s death: Family friend charged”.

“Lauren’s body was found yesterday morning in a stream just 300 metres from her home in the Nepean Caravan Park at Emu Plains,” the Herald’s story said.

“Teenage children who live in the caravan park hissed and yelled abuse yesterday afternoon as the unemployed man charged with the murder was taken back to Penrith police station after showing investigating officers the scene of the killing.”

The Herald reported that Neville Raymond Towner was a family friend who used to live in the caravan park.

It was originally thought that Lauren may had fallen into the Nepean River, given its proximity to the caravan park. But when a television news crew discovered the girl’s clothing in a tree and her pink gum boots nearby, it was obvious her life had come to a much more grim ending.

Neville Raymond Towner was originally sentenced to life imprisonment but later appealed and was granted eligibility for parole in 2009.

The State Parole Authority refused Mr Towner’s parole five times between 2009 and April 2013. He still remains behind bars today but has been granted day release.

Steve Ticehurst was a Detective Senior Constable with the Homicide Squad, Major Crimes Squad North West Region and the lead investigator on the Lauren Hickson murder.

He spoke to the Weekender back in 2013.

“The Towner case was an absolutely horrific murder... and the family are scared if Towner is allowed out,” he said.

“It is my opinion and my opinion only that if a person takes a life, then they do not deserve to be released. Lauren has been robbed of having a life, a family, children. Why should anyone who takes that away from someone be given their freedom. But I just don’t see the system changing... how many more lives will it take?”

urating a year’s worth of theatre and music performances is no mean feat.

There’s many factors to be considered when deciding on a program that will appeal to a group of potential audience members that come from a range of different backgrounds and interests.

Though it’s certainly not an easy task, after speaking to The Joan’s Music Producer Valda Silvy for just a few moments you can tell it’s definitely an enjoyable one.

The passion of the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes is what keeps The Joan going, and 2016 is set to be a great season of entertainment for the Penrith region.

“It’s another new year and it will be full of all new entertainment, offering music and theatre events for all ages and tastes,” Valda said.

“We have so many options that we could pick from and we try and choose the ones that we know are attractive to our patrons.”

Kicking off the 2016 season is ‘The Divine Miss Bette’ which will take to The Joan stage on Friday, January 22. This hit show sees star and creator Catherine Alcorn bring to life the one and only Better Midler on stage.

February will be the world premiere of The Q’s very own work, ‘Teacup in a Storm’ followed by a performance from the Sydney Chamber Choir led by famed conductor Richard Gill in March.

In April audiences will get to hear the beautiful sounds from the ‘Angel of Australia’, Mirusia, who has worked as a featured soprano soloist with Andre Rieu and is the youngest ever winner of the Dame Joan Sutherland Opera Award.

May will be the month for laughs with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow rolling into town once again.

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra will serenade audiences with Mozart’s ‘A Little Night Music’ in June, before ‘Country Song’, a fictionalised story inspired by the life of Jimmy Little makes its way to The Joan in July.

July will also see the one-man microepic award winning puppet show ‘Alvin Sputnik: Deep Sea Explorer’ come to the stage for a touching story about love and the end of the world.

In the second half of the year the political satire show ‘The Wharf Revue’ will be back for more laughs followed by one of America’s most loved musicals, ‘Always...

Patsy Cline’.

One of the stand out dramas of the season will be ‘Mother’, a one-woman play written by playwright Daniel Keene and featuring acclaimed actor Noni Hazlehurst which will be on at the Joan in October.

To round out the season two of the country’s best opera stars, Teddy Tahu Rhodes and Greta Bradman will have The Joan’s Concert Hall alive with beautiful music.

This is just the tip of the iceberg though.

The Morning Melodies series will also be returning in 2016 along with Friday Night Lights, a pop-up pre-show event that offers entertainment and a chance to enjoy tasty snacks and drinks after another long working week.

ourney to the bottom of the sea and meet some amazing aquatic creatures when Erth’s Prehistoric Aquarium comes to The Joan this January.

Young audiences will have a ball while they learn about prehistoric creatures in this interactive and educational theatre experience.

Following on from the internationally loved show Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo, Erth’s Prehistoric Aquarium sees the team at Erth collect a host of larger than life characters, like the Kronosaurus and Plesiosaur, in their giant aquarium.

A small number of young divers will have the opportunity to join the show’s performers on stage to ‘swim’ with these amazing creatures as they journey to the bottom of the ocean.

This is a great opportunity to teach kids about the science of paleontology through a fun, unique and awe-inspiring stage show.

ne of Australia’s most significant political artists, Deborah Kelly, will be bringing her exhibition ‘Bodies of Work’ to the Penrith Regional Gallery this summer.

Running until Sunday, February 21, the exhibition includes artworks from the last 15 years of Deborah’s art practice, exploring the themes of gender, relationships and politics.

Deborah’s work crosses many mediums including collage, animation, photography, sculpture and performance.

“The artist uses these means to question and to challenge global capital, public policy, religious authority, power and privilege,” Penrith Regional Gallery

and The Lewers Bequest Director, Dr Lee-Anne Hall said.

Deborah has worked closely with the Penrith Regional Gallery and The Lewers Bequest Gallery to select the included works, and this new exhibit will be the first time her work has been exhibited in such an extensive survey format.

‘Bodies of Work’ offers gallery visitors the opportunity to experience the unique work of this prominent socially engaged artist and is a must see cultural event this summer.

Preparation 1. Place 4 cups cold water, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom and sugar in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium-low.

2. Add pears. Cook, partially covered, turning occasionally, for 18 to 20 minutes or until pears are just tender. Remove from heat. Allow pears to cool in syrup, turning occasionally. Using a slotted spoon, transfer pears to a plate.

3. Save this liquid in the freezer for next time, it gets better and better!

Caramel Ingredients • 2 cups castor sugar • 200gms unsalted butter, at room temperature, cut into pieces

• 1 cup thickened cream, at room temperature • 1 tablespoon salt flakes

Preparation 1. For the caramel – Heat the sugar over medium high-heat in the bottom of a saucepan. When the sugar starts to melt, start whisking the sugar. The sugar will clump up, but keep whisking. It will continue to melt. When the sugar is melted, stop whisking. You can swirl the pan to move the sugar around.

2. Continue cooking the sugar until it reaches a deep golden colour. Make sure you watch the pan very closely. This is where it is easy to burn the caramel. You want the caramel to reach 160c, I suggest using a thermometer.

3. As soon as the sugar reaches the dark golden colour, carefully add the butter.

Whisk until butter is melted. If the sugar gets stuck to the whisk, you can switch to a wooden spoon.

4. Remove the pan from the heat and slowly pour in the heavy cream. Whisk until cream is incorporated and caramel is smooth. Whisk in the sea salt flakes.

5. Let the caramel sauce cool for about 10 minutes in the pan. Pour the caramel into a large jar and cool to room temperature. Put the salted caramel sauce in the refrigerator, it will keep for up to a month.

6. Serve both the pear and caramel warm with your favourite ice cream or double cream.

Ê Sad news for the hardworking behind-the-scenes crew over at Channel Nine, with ‘Nine News’ set to turn to automation in its Sydney and Melbourne studios from February 2016. As part of the move, floor crew will no longer be required but it isn’t clear as to how many staff will get the chop. In recent times, Channel Ten, Seven and the ABC have moved to automation in their newsrooms, where essentially a computer program controls the vision switcher, graphics, cameras, audio, lighting and video playback. Let’s hope the staff at Nine can be used elsewhere. Ê Funnyman John Cleese is adapting a stage version of ‘Fawlty Towers’ to tour Australia and New Zealand.

John Cleese’s ‘Fawlty Towers: Live on Stage’ will have its world premiere in Sydney next August, with Cleese to oversee casting in February. Ê Lastly, next week I’ll present my fourth annual Chatter on the Box Awards, where I’ll give my best and worst shows for 2015 plus tell you which new show to look out for. Don’t miss it!

Christmas spirit alive and well It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, especially in Penrith’s Pop Up Park where the festive season was well and truly underway with the Penrith CBD Corporation’s Kids Christmas Lunch.

The sunny Saturday event included plenty of fun activities like face painting, a kid’s disco thanks to Target Radio Network and a host of exciting characters to meet, including Spider-man, The Gingerbread Man and Olaf from ‘Frozen’.

But the most important guest was the jolly man himself, Santa, who was joined by his hardworking elves to meet the kids and hear their Christmas wishes.

Plenty of kids turned out to enjoy the day and get into the Christmas spirit. The event was part of a range of offerings at the Pop Up Park in the coming months.

mum penalty of two years in jail and a $2,200 fine. For more serious possession offences (such as repeat offences) a prison sentence can be a possible outcome if you are found guilty.

For a less serious manifestation of this offence (such as a first offence), a Community Service Order, Good Behaviour Bond, fine or Section 10 (meaning your conviction is not recorded) are all possible outcomes if you are found guilty.

In NSW, the offence of supplying a prohibited drug carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

Determining if you are guilty of a supply offence depends on the amount and type of drug you are caught with.

The Drug Misuse & Trafficking Act sets out the small, trafficable, indictable, commercial and large commercial quantities for each drug. People may be surprised at the small amount of drugs that are required to render you guilty of a supply offence.

Your penalty for any of the above offences will depend on a range of factors including the type of drug you are caught with, the amount of drugs you are caught with, and the circumstances surrounding the offence.

As the weather heats up, the risk of heat stroke in pets rises.

Heat stroke is a syndrome that occurs when an animal’s body temperature exceeds 40 degrees – this can cause problems with blood clotting and organ function.

Heat stroke can result in shock, internal bleeding, organ failure and eventual death.

Cats and dogs are very different to humans because they cannot sweat from their skin.

In humans, air circulating past sweaty skin cools the blood internally, so a person can still function on a 45

degree day. Dogs and cats only sweat through their foot pads, and with their bodies covered in fur, they cannot easily cool down.

Animals will pant to try and cool their internal body temperature but this is not very effective in extreme weather conditions.

As with children, DO NOT leave pets in cars, even briefly, especially in the summer

months.

The internal temperature of a car can rapidly reach extreme temperatures greater than 50 degrees.

Exercise naturally heats a dog and they cannot cool well when the ambient temperature is warm.

Never let a dog do strenuous exercise when the temperature is above 25 degrees.

It is sensible to only exercise dogs early in the morning, or in the cool of evening during summer months.

If extreme temperatures are predicted, then providing areas of shade or the cool of under the house will help.

When temperatures greater than 40 degrees are predicted, leaving pets indoors with air conditioning is the best option.

If this is not possible, then you can provide a child’s wading pool or plastic shell (left in a shady area) with only a few centimetres of water for dogs to lie in.

Freezing water filled plastic bottles and placing them at the bottom of pet beds can also help cool down resting pets.

You can provide ice blocks to entertain and cool a pet in the summer months.

A large ice block may last for some hours.

Whatever you do, always be aware of the conditions you’re leaving your pet in.

It is not just that they are good tunes, powerful to sing and stirring to the soul as the music and words soak into us, but it is also that the words speak powerfully of a truth that connects with our inner being.

If a barrier can be put in place, please ensure that the pool is fully isolated from the house by a four-sided complying fence, self-closing and self-latching gates are used, and that the fence and gate are checked regularly to ensure they are in good working order, especially after storms.

Of course, children can still climb fences, and children as young as two-years-old have drowned in backyard pools after using chairs, bins, pot plants, eskies etc, to boost themselves up to open the gate or climb over.

Ensure that there are no items in the yard that children could drag over and use to climb the fence, and never prop a pool gate open for any reason.

Always inspect the fence and gate in any property before buying or renting, in addition to obtaining a Certificate of Compliance from the previous owners or rental agency to ensure maximum precautions have been taken.

This page also offers plenty of delicious recipe posts and there’s a sister page called Baby Guru Nutrition, that offers advice on nutrition for babies, toddlers, kids and mums.

The Moderation Movement (www.facebook.com/ moderationmovement) The Moderation Movement is the brainchild of Zoe Nicholson from Figureate Dietetics and Jodie Arnot from Healthy Balance Fitness.

The Moderation Movement is packed full of posts about the importance of enjoying a non-restrictive approach to eating, while also finding exercise you enjoy without the pressure of working towards six pack abs.

One of the things I love about this page is that it takes the focus off weight and shifts it to making the best choices for health and happiness.

While these and other pages give great general nutrition advice, remember that for the management of medical conditions it’s best to speak to your GP.

or the first time in more than two years, the Western Sydney Wanderers are back at the top of the A-League ladder as they prepare for a blockbuster showdown against the second-placed Melbourne Victory this Saturday night.

The last time the Wanderers led the league was way back in November 2013, where they stayed on top of the standings for just one week.

Last weekend at Pirtek Stadium the Wanderers took care of the Brisbane Roar 2-1 to record their sixth straight win.

Scoring machine Mitch Nichols got the match winner for the home side with one of the goals of the season in the 79th minute.

Mark Bridge opened the scoring for the Wanderers in the 29th minute before Brisbane’s Jamie Maclaren tied the game before half-time.

But it was Nichols’ sublime strike into the far, top corner that proved the difference and propelled the Wanderers to sole

competition leaders after nine rounds.

“We’re doing good… we’re at the top of the table winning games and improving every game, so we are happy but we’re still far from where we want to be,” Wanderers import, Romeo Castelen said.

The former Dutch international said it wasn’t a surprise to the players themselves at where they sit on the A-League ladder.

“We work every day as a group, so it’s not like it’s coming out of the blue for us – we know what we’re building on,” he said.

“To be on top at the end of the season is our main goal.”

Western Sydney will be hoping to consolidate their competition-leading position this Saturday when they take on the second-placed Melbourne Victory at Pirtek Stadium.

Last year’s champions are coming off a surprising 2-0 loss to Wellington last weekend and will be eager to put the Wanderers to the test.

“Melbourne are a good side, they won the championship last year and it’ll be a good test for us to see where we are at,” Castelen said.

The match kicks off at 7.30pm.

From humble beginnings, Nielsen took Former St Marys Senior High School student is back in Australia coaching the next generation of stars NATHAN TAYLOR

efore he captained the Australian Boomers at two Olympic Games and carved out a successful career in European basketball, Matt Nielsen was ditching school early three times a week to train with the Sydney Kings.

Born in Penrith in 1978, Nielsen fell in love with the game of basketball at high school after one of his teachers took notice of his height and introduced him to the sport.

“My maths teacher at Penrith High, Mr Tucker, was the man who introduced me to the sport and I’m very grateful for that,” Nielsen told the Weekender.

After getting a taste for the game at high school, Nielsen joined the Penrith Basketball Association where he began to hone his skills and rise through the system.

“Peter Lawless coached me in the junior teams at Penrith and opportunities arose very quickly after that. I ended up playing with the Sydney Kings youth team all in the same year,” Nielsen said.

Nielsen was a member of the Kings whilst a student at St Marys Senior High where, three days a week, he would need

“I remember finishing school at lunchtime to catch a train then a bus to Alexandria,” he recalled.

“As a kid, being a professional athlete and a high school student was a pretty

surreal experience, but it does feel like a long time ago.”

In 1995, at just 17, Nielsen played two games for the Kings before moving to Canberra in 1996 to attend the Australian Institute of Sport.

He returned to the Kings in 1997 where

he won the NBL’s Rookie of the Year Award before he spent a further seven seasons at the famous ‘Kingdome’, helping the club to back to back titles in 2003 and 2004.

After going undrafted in the 2000 NBA Draft, Nielsen had another crack at making it in the US when he was a member of the Denver Nuggets Summer League team in 2004.

However with the Nuggets stacked with multiple power forwards, Nielsen missed the cut and so, took his talents to Europe.

Nielsen spent nearly 10 years abroad where he played for teams in Greece, Lithuania, Spain and Russia.

“It was a great experience playing in Europe, we had a mix of some pretty cold climates in Lithuania and Moscow, and some nice climates in Spain and Greece,” Nielsen said.

“My kids were lucky enough to spend the first decade of their lives experiencing that.”

Whilst in Europe, Nielsen was also regularly selected as a member of the Australian Boomers national team, in which he competed at three Olympic Games, captaining two.

During the Olympic Games in London, Nielsen was given the tough assignment of guarding NBA superstar LeBron James.

the world by storm after a stellar career in the sport he was born to play “It was definitely my proudest moment to captain Australia at Beijing (2008) and London (2012),” Nielsen said.

“I wanted to go to an Olympic Games before I even took up basketball. Those experiences, there was nothing better than that.”

Nielsen officially retired from the game in 2013 and returned to Australia to live in Perth, where he would take up a parttime coaching role with the NBL’s Perth Wildcats.

At the end of the 2013/14 NBL season, Nielsen finally got his crack in the NBA when he joined the coaching staff in a player development role at the five-time NBA champions San Antonio Spurs.

“That was an awesome experience… the Spurs have some unbelievable staff and you are really there to observe and help out where you can,” Nielsen said.

Whilst at the Spurs, Nielsen also got the chance to work with one of the NBA’s most renowned coaches in Gregg Popovich.

“Pop is a very busy man but I did have some time to have a chat with him here and there. He’s an amazing person and to watch him go about his craft every day, I was really lucky,” he said.

Nielsen’s time in San Antonio gave him the taste he needed to know that basket-

ball coaching was the next step in his illustrious career.

The 37-year-old got back in touch with the Perth Wildcats and signed on to be the club’s assistant coach for the current season.

“It’s still a learning process, you look at the game from different angles,” he said.

“There’s still a long way to go to be where I want to be but I am certainly enjoying it.”

Last month Nielsen was presented with one of the biggest honours of his long and decorated career, inducted in the Basketball NSW Hall of Fame.

While most players are usually inducted into the Hall of Fame well after their playing careers have ended, Nielsen was bestowed the honour just two years after retiring from the game.

“It’s a massive honour to be inducted into the Basketball NSW Hall of Fame, I’ve spent a good part of my life playing basketball in NSW – whether it was Penrith in my junior days or at the Sydney Kings,” he said.

“I was surprised, however, at how quickly they put me in, I only stopped playing a couple of years ago.”

With Nielsen’s mother still residing in Penrith, he hopes to return home soon to the place where it all began.

Courts score major transformation Tennis overhaul costs blow out but end result will be positive for the sport’s future in Penrith NATHAN TAYLOR

espite a number of unexpected setbacks, tennis is set for a huge facelift in Penrith when brand new cushion hardcourts are finally open to the public next month.

For the past four months, courts at Nepean District Tennis Association’s (NDTA) Woodriff Gardens Tennis Complex have been undergoing a major transformation which will see 10 courts switched from tired, old synthetic grass surfaces to Grand Slam quality cushion hardcourts.

The new courts – funded in part by Penrith City Council, the NSW State Government, Tennis Australia and NDTA – were initially meant to open in November, but contractors working on the project ran into a number of issues along the way.

“There were some problems structurally with the base underneath, and the contractors as well as Penrith Council had been working hard on a solution to rectify them,” NDTA CEO, Chris Woodland said.

“The project is now a total rebuild as opposed to a resurfacing and that’s pushed construction out from $460,000 to $1.3 million.”

“It’s a nine layer cushion surface and they’ve literally got do to one layer a day to let it dry. By the time we get the asphalt down, the nine layer surface down and

erect new fences, we’re probably looking at a mid January finish at the earliest.”

Once the initial eight courts are complete, construction will then begin on an additional two courts.

However, more funding will be needed for the entire complex to be fully transformed to a cushion hardcourt surface,

with four courts remaining synthetic grass for the foreseeable future.

Woodriff Gardens will be the second tennis complex in the state with cushion hardcourts, with the other being the NSW Tennis Centre at Sydney Olympic Park.

Mr Woodland said there were a number of advantages in switching from synthetic grass courts to a cushion hardcourt complex.

“From Tennis Australia’s perspective, the advantage of the new courts is it provides us with some additional elite programming opportunities,” he said.

“There are no tournaments in the world played on synthetic grass anymore but there are plenty of competitions over in North America and Australia that use cushion hardcourts.”

Interestingly, during the demolition phase, the complex’s old clay courts were revealed under the asphalt, unearthing an incredible look into Penrith’s tennis past.

“Historically, in the 1960s, these clay court surfaces had an acrylic line that was nailed down into them, and those lines were found still underneath the court,” Mr Woodland said.

The synthetic grass surface at the Woodriff Gardens Tennis Complex has been in use since the mid 1980s.

Around the grounds CRICKET: Penrith’s first grade side have a big total to chase when they return to action this weekend against Gordon in Round 7 of the Sydney Grade Cricket competition.

Playing in a two day match at Chatswood Oval, Gordon won the toss and elected to bat first.

Gordon scored an impressive 8/308 before stumps. Penrith’s Michael Collins was best with the ball with 2/46.

Penrith will be hoping to dismiss Gordon’s final two batters early so they can attempt to reach their total and get back on the winner’s board.

Play resumes Saturday at 10.30am.

CRICKET: Local cricket clubs in the Penrith region can now apply for a two year CommBank Cricket Club Sponsorship.

Hiku fills the gap left in Penrith’s backline by wayward centre Jamal Idris, who was released by the club last month.
