Penrith City Council has taken the strong step of inviting private investors to make bold and innovative proposals on the development of two Council owned sites on Reserve Street and Union Road. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said the move to call on partners to ‘Invest in the New West’ is about building relationships with businesses, who can realise the potential of jobs and inner city living. “Council recognised that we can’t do it all by ourselves and the best way to maximise the potential of the area is to partner with investors,” she said. “It is not the core business of Council to be a developer, but bringing jobs to Penrith, attracting business to come and invest in the area and to provide quality housing is what we need.” Over a 12 month period, Council’s Penrith Progression project established a clear vision for the future that will boost Penrith’s identity as a regional city. The Penrith Progression plan outlined six different ‘Opportunity Precincts’ that could transform the city, including the Reserve Street and Union Road sites. Studies were undertaken by Council to identify specific uses for the sites, as part of a wider strategic plan to connect and activate the city centre. Story continues on » p. 3
