If we hold this seat, then we will be returned to Government.” With those words, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull confirmed Lindsay as the seat that will decide the Federal Election. Mr Turnbull made the bold declaration with sitting MP Fiona Scott by his side at Penrith Regional Gallery on Wednesday morning. Lindsay has been won by the party that has formed government since 1984, and Mr Turnbull said it’s crucial it’s held for the Coalition to carry out their “national economic plan”. Mr Turnbull caught the train to Penrith Regional Gallery, in what is expected to be the first of many visits during the eight week election campaign. He was forced to defend Ms Scott after intense questions from the press pack, asking who she voted for in the leadership spill in September last year, and if a visit from the Prime Minister was a reward for her backing him. “Those party room ballots are secret ballots, and they’re secret for a reason, so that people can confidentially make a choice,” Mr Turnbull said. Ms Scott deflected the questions and is adamant she will not say who she voted for, though it is widely rumoured she backed Mr Turnbull. Mr Turnbull’s visit to the Gallery was to meet with western Sydney businesswomen, who raised a few questions and concerns of their own. Women With Altitude founder, Andrea TurnerBoys, said there are challenges around superannuation contributions for women in business. Story continues on » p. 7

Lindsay will be crucial battleground Election campaign officially underway with local seat likely to go down to the wire on polling day DALE DRINKWATER

indsay is shaping up as a key election battleground with the seat again likely to play a major role in which party forms government in July. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited the Governor-General last Sunday to officially dissolve both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and call a July 2 election. Sitting Lindsay MP, Fiona Scott, holds the seat by a narrow margin of just three per cent for the Liberals. Labor candidate Emma Husar, who lost the 2015 State Election to Stuart Ayres, is considered a big chance of taking the seat. Other candidates include Nick Xenophon Team’s Stephen Lynch, Kingsley Liu of the Greens, Penrith Councillor and independent candidate Maurice Girotto, and the Australia First Party’s Jim Saleam. Ms Scott said the Liberal Party’s message is simple, with a plan for a strong economy and providing “jobs and growth”. “We will provide tax cuts and incentives for small businesses and hard working families, while delivering sustainable budgets with crackdowns on tax avoidance and loopholes,” she said.

L

The battle between Fiona Scott and Emma Husar is likely to go down to the wire “We have guaranteed funding for health, education and roads.” Through a science and innovation agenda, the Liberal Party plans to commercialise Australian ideas, and boost youth participation in science, technology,

engineering and maths. Ms Husar said Labor’s focus is on universal healthcare and protecting Medicare, hospitals, schools and teachers. “Labor will invest in schools and teachers, to give every kid a decent shot

at success. Unlike the Coalition, we are fully committed to the Gonski funding reforms,” she said. “We will make sure higher education is affordable, stamp out the Coalition’s $100,000 degrees, clean up rorts in vocational education and put TAFE back at the centre of the system.” In terms of taxation, she said Labor would go after multinational tax avoidance, and focus on middle-class prosperity. She said the party supports marriage equality, and they have a plan to address climate change. As a ‘bridge connecting the left and right’, Stephen Lynch said a vote for him is a vote for a ‘proud westie’. “If Fiona Scott or Emma Husar are successful at this election, they will be minor voices in major parties at a time when the flight paths over Lindsay are being decided,” he said. “If however I am elected, I will immediately be a major voice in a minor party – a minor party which is widely tipped to hold the balance of power.” This election marks the first time that the two major parties have both fielded female candidates in Lindsay since the 1998 election, when Jackie Kelly took on Cathy O’Toole.

A is for Alan Jones. One of the most influential broadcasters in the country and a vocal Tony Abbott supporter. Can the Liberals still count on his voice to be on their side during the campaign? B is for Bill Shorten. Was less popular than a Parramatta Eels Director just a few months ago but is now a real shot of winning this election. C is for Campaign Buses. Surely with the shrinking media landscape these days, a large van would do the trick? D is for David Bradbury. It’s worth noting that this is the first Federal Election since 1998 that hasn’t had his name on the candidates list.

You can expect plenty of shopping centre visits during this campaign and as a result, no baby is safe from a politician’s grasp. L is for Lindsay. A battleground for this campaign and an electorate that will help decide the election. The Liberals will campaign hard here and you can expect Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten to make multiple visits to the area in an effort to shore up votes. M is for Malcolm Turnbull. This election is as much a referendum on his decision to knife Tony Abbott as anything else. Will that shrewd move come back to haunt him or has the public decided it was a necessary evil? N is for Nobody. That’s who wants to be friends with the Greens. O is for Oakes. Laurie Oakes, that is. Enough said. P is for Polls. There will be plenty of them between now and July 2, but as every politician says, the only one that matters is on election day. Q is for Q & A. The paper thin margin with which the Liberals hold Lindsay. U is for Unity. The Liberals claim it exists but the relationship between Malcolm Turnbull and Scott Morrison seems about as awkward as a Tinder date gone wrong. V is for Victory Speech. Malcolm Turnbull has been planning his since he was a little boy. W is for Waleed Aly. The Gold Logie winner is a growing voice in the Australian media landscape and is likely to deliver a few crushing editorials on ‘The Project’ during the campaign. X is for the X-Factor. Kevin Rudd had it, even Tony Abbott had it for a little while. I’m not quite sure there’s anybody who has it at the moment, which could make for a rather boring campaign. Y is for YouTube. There’s always funny cat videos when the campaign gets a little boring. Z is for Zimmerman. After winning a by-election in December last year to replace Joe Hockey as the MP for North Sydney, Trent can put his feet up if he likes. He is no chance of losing the very safe Liberal seat.

olyton resident Andrew Peach is a maintenance technician on trains, but says he can’t keep on top of his education with the increasing costs of TAFE. “I have to keep learning in my job, I have to keep up with the latest technology and I have to pay for that,” he said. “With the costs the way they are, how am I going to support that, look after a household, and look after children?” Mr Peach is a member of the Penrith Valley Community Union, and was with Labor candidate for Lindsay Emma Husar and Shadow Minister for Vocational Education Sharon Bird at Nepean TAFE in Kingswood on Monday. They fear a $2.75 billion reduction to the skills portfolio, that includes $1 billion in cuts to apprentices, will price more people out of TAFE and lose apprentice programs such as the Apprentice to Business Owners Program and the Tools for Your Trade Program. Ms Husar said the number of apprentices in training in Lindsay has already dropped by 609 places since June 2014, and this will be another blow to those looking to re-skill. “We’ve got a higher than average youth

Ms Bird said it’s clear to Labor that if there is to be jobs and growth you cannot do it without investment in education. “In the Federal Budget you didn’t see the Government talk about skills at all. All the budget had was another cut to skills,” she said.

There was also an increase to the tax discount for unincorporated small businesses from five per cent to eight per cent, capped at $1000, for businesses in Australia with a turnover less than $5 million. Scott says government is listening Re-think announced on flight paths after community consultation period DALE DRINKWATER

he Federal Government’s announcement to reconsider the proposed flight paths for the western Sydney airport has been met with mixed responses. Last Friday, the proposed single merge point over Blaxland outlined in the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was scrapped, after community consultation attracted some 5000 submissions. Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott said it’s important the airport operates to meet the expectations of the community and, based on the feedback, the merge point will not be part of the airspace plan. “There are always challenges in building infrastructure projects such as this, however this announcement shows that the Government is listening,” she said. One of those submissions last year was made by Penrith Council, which is delighted its calls have been answered and alternative flight paths and merge points will be assessed. Mayor Karen McKeown said changes could minimise environmental impacts and provide a more equitable distribution of noise. “Council’s position has always been that the airport must deliver maximum

Fiona Scott, Assistant Minister for Cities and Digital Transformation Angus Taylor, Blaxland local Matt Birt,Louise Markus and Major Projects Minister Paul Fletcher benefits and minimum impacts for the community, and we have voiced this strongly to all levels of government,” she said. “We will continue to push for an airport that delivers significant benefits for our community, and this includes passenger rail connecting the airport and the western Sydney region to the north and south.”

Lindsay’s candidate for NXT, Stephen Lynch, said it potentially exposes Lindsay residents to disruptive noise levels. “As the Government is now unable to advise voters before the election where the flight paths over western Sydney will be, it follows that any home within 32km of the airport may potentially be exposed to aircraft noise levels of over 60 decibels,” he said.

PM listens to local concerns Story continued from » p. 1 “Women who leave the workforce to have babies stop contributing to super, and when they start a business they don’t have extra funds to add to super, so there’s two areas where we have removed ourselves,” she said. Mr Turnbull said women can use the concessional contributions they would have used if they had been working later, to double up and catch up. He also agreed to meet with Penrith psychotherapist and counsellor, Melissa Ferrari and her colleagues, to hear first hand issues surrounding mental illness. “We are working with it all the time, and I want to have the opportunity to deliver it to you,” Ms Ferrari said. With Minister for Education, Senator Simon Birmingham in attendance, the Luke Priddis Foundation’s General Manager Tamara VanAntwerpen asked Mr Turnbull for a school for autism in western Sydney. “Regular schooling doesn’t work for children with autism,” she said, Mr Turnbull reportedly planned to walk through the streets of Penrith after his visit to the Gallery, but cancelled the opportunity. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten weighed in on the leadership issue. “The divisions in the Liberal Party were again today on display because she (Ms Scott) famously was supported by Tony Abbott,” he said on Wednesday.

The Planning Proposal seeks to rezone the land bound by Station Street, Henry Street, Woodriff Street and Allen Place from B3 Commercial Core to B4 Mixed-Use. The current RE1 Public Recreation zone at the corner of Henry Street and Station Street is proposed to be retained. The proposed rezoning of the land from B3 Commercial Core to B4 Mixed-Use would expand the permissible uses on the site, specifically by making residential uses permissible. ormer Llandilo resident, Lexi Clark, finally found her voice after enduring hardship when she caught the attention of the Madden brothers on Channel Nine’s ‘The Voice’. Clark appeared on Australian screens on the first episode of the series on Sunday, May 1, during the blind audition stage and had coaches Delta Goodrem, Ronan Keating and the Madden brothers all turn around to see her sing. “I didn’t actually notice the coaches had turned around; I didn’t want to look because it would freak me out so I just focused on my family who were in the audience,” Clark told the Weekender. Choosing to be on Team Madden was easy for Clark, who said she has been in awe of their careers for years. “The first album I ever bought was Good Charlotte,” she said. “It was only a few months ago that the 20th anniversary of Good Charlotte was celebrated. “They have managed to stay relevant for so long, whether it’s producing or writing music, or finding bands; if you can stick around in the music industry for that long, you must be doing something right.” At 19-years-old, Clark has found her

Lexi Clark on the day of her blind auditions sound in the soul and R&B genres, even though she started out as a classical and musical theatre performer. “It was hard after I had my surgery for tonsillitis because I didn’t talk for about three or four weeks and then when I did, I sounded like I do now which wasn’t right,” she said. “It was a very frustrating time and for about six months I was pretty depressed because I felt like there was nothing else I was passionate about.”

Work to start on long-awaited bridge New river crossing: Massive project to begin construction by July with 2018 opening expected DALE DRINKWATER

t’s been all talk for several years but now there’s finally some action when it comes to the Nepean River Green Bridge, with construction work set to begin by July. It was announced on Monday that Seymour Whyte Constructions has been chosen to build the long-awaited bridge. Greg Anderson, Project Manager at Seymour Whyte Constructions, said they will set up their compound in Memorial Avenue in July, to then prepare the build. “Preparatory works include the removal of overhead power lines that are getting shifted closer to the old bridge, then we will undertake ground prep works for the abutments,” he said. The bridge will be built from the eastern side of the river, and will be pushed out over temporary piers in the river incrementally. The final bridge will be the same height as Victoria Bridge, with just one permanent pier on the western side of the river. State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, said the bridge will have the largest uninterrupted span of any pedestrian bridge in Australia, at 200 metres long.

I

Bridge campaigner Joe Grassi with Penrith MP Stuart Ayres. Photo: Megan Dunn

“The A-frame truss of the bridge is designed to hold up a very large and heavy span, to ensure we have the least amount of interruption on rowing and user groups across the river,” he said. There were a number of obstacles at the “difficult site” up until now, including site heritage, flooding issues, gas mains, road works and the fire at the Log Cabin. These increased the time length of the project and, as a result, the cost. Minister for Roads, Duncan Gay, said there will be huge benefits to the 500 people that brave the Victoria Bridge every day. “I think there will be two or three times as many people who will want to use this one when it’s in place,” he said. It will be completed by 2018 and will have cost the NSW Government $49 million, over twice the original amount of funding allocated to the project. “The early estimates were before we went into detail,” Mr Gay said. He said the extra money came from subsequent NSW Government Budgets since the first allocation of money in the 2011 to 2012 Budget. Are you looking forward to the new bridge? L AW a n d O R D E R From The Courts: Your Complete Legal Wrap COMPILED BY ALENA HIGGINS. OUR COURT REPORTING IS SPONSORED BY LOCAL LAW FIRM COMPLETE LEGAL & CONVEYANCING.

Curious teenager placed on good behaviour bond

A young man who took his father’s rifle from a safe and proceeded to undertake target practise in his backyard has been placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond. Fathelrhman Elgaili Hamid, 19, fronted Penrith Local Court on Wednesday charged with use of an unauthorised firearm. Despite knowing he was “not allowed in the bedroom let alone the safe”, the court heard a “very curious” Mr Hamid seized the opportunity to open the device after his father inadvertently left the key unattended in his coat pocket. Magistrate Roger Clisdell said he “didn’t care” how big the backyard was, it was still in a suburban area, adding the defendant could have killed his neighbours had they been driving past. “You have no prospect of getting a firearm licence for the next 10 to 15 years,” he said.

Regular speeder adds drink driving to his resume

A habitual lead-foot driver caught drink driving has been reminded that speed also kills. Sean Patrick Hogan appeared before Penrith Local Court on Wednesday charged with low-range drink driving. Magistrate Roger Clisdell described Mr Hogan, who has 18 speeding offences to his name, as a “perpetual speeder” and suggested the only time Mr Hogan drove under the speed limit was when he was stationary or stuck in heavy traffic. “Not only does drink driving kill people, but speeding does too,” Magistrate Clisdell said. He warned Mr Hogan if he was caught speeding again in the next year he would be in breach of his good behaviour bond.

Truckie gets another chance

A truck driver nabbed driving while suspended has been given a chance to

prove he can obey the road rules. Mitchell Adam Malligan fronted Penrith Local Court on Wednesday after he failed to open his mail in time and apply for an extra demerit point. Magistrate Roger Clisdell told Mr Malligan he could keep his licence in lieu of further disqualification and instead be placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond if he did not commit any further offences by December 12. “Wear your seatbelt, put your mobile phone out of reach and drive accordingly,” he said.

Good behaviour bond for man caught with cannabis

Robert Murray has been placed on a six-month good behaviour bond after pleading guilty to possessing a prohibited plant. Magistrate Roger Clisdell told Penrith Local Court on Wednesday he was satisfied Mr Murray was using cannabis for pain relief and not any other purpose. Mr Murray was left wheelchair bound in 1986 after a motorcycle accident. “Hopefully, Mr Murray, you might be able to get a prescription for cannabis legally soon,” Magistrate Clisdell said. “Don’t grow any marijuana in the meantime.”

Man escapes jail time despite driving while disqualified

A man disqualified from driving until 2037 has narrowly escaped jail time after pleading guilty to driving while disqualified. Penrith Local Court heard Jesse Michael Rae was unsuitable for an intensive correction order due to his work commitments. “What’s more important: continuing to work or going to jail for six months”, Magistrate Roger Clisdell asked on Wednesday. However, His Honour later acquiesced. “I better keep you working rather than in a cell somewhere,” he said.

He was given a six-month suspended sentence. “That’s called sudden death,” Magistrate Clisdell said.

No conviction recorded for man caught drink driving

A magistrate has exercised her discretion and allowed a man to walk away without recording a conviction, despite him pleading guilty to mid-range drink driving. Vishaal Anand Naidu, 24, told Penrith Local Court on Wednesday he was “most afraid” of the damage a criminal record could have on his career. Magistrate Margaret McGlynn took into consideration the IT worker’s plea of guilty at the first instance and otherwise good traffic record when deciding against recording a conviction. He was given a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Harsh warning for woman caught behind the wheel

A woman caught driving while her licence was cancelled has been ordered off the road for 12 months. Rhiannon Brown faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday where she pleaded guilty to the charge. Magistrate Fiona Toose warned Ms Brown to stay off the road or risk serious consequences such as jail time. “I can assure you, if you keep driving the police will catch you,” she said. “It’s absolutely not worth it.” She was convicted and fined $500.

Man to face court again over driving offences in St Marys

A man who allegedly committed a string of driving offences at St Marys will front court again after his case was adjourned. Dale Fissialo fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with driving while suspended, failing to wear a seatbelt, using a vehicle with no seatbelts, and disobeying a no parking sign. The matter was adjourned to May 19 to

allow Mr Fissialo to seek legal advice. He is yet to enter a plea.

Another court date for man who faces multiple charges

Paul Andrew Murray has fronted Penrith Local Court charged with two offences. Mr Murray pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of custody of a knife in a public place and not guilty to possessing a Bose mini speaker suspected of being stolen. The matter was adjourned until June 22.

No plea entered; legal advice being sought

Wendy-Ann Lennox has had her court case adjourned in order to seek legal advice. Ms Lennox fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with possessing a prohibited drug and goods in custody, which are alleged to have occurred at Werrington on April 16. The matter was adjourned to May 19. She is yet to enter a plea.

Suspension overturned

Jason Michael Loadsman has had his driving suspension overturned on appeal. Mr Loadsman faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday to fight his demerit point suspension. Magistrate Fiona Toose reminded him he would be back where he started if he committed another traffic offence.

Man forgot to attend court

A man who failed to appear at court and was convicted in his absence has had his request for annulment refused. Magistrate Fiona Toose told Curtis Campbell Michael Smith last Thursday his excuse that he forgot the date he had to attend court to face his drive while licence suspended charge was unacceptable. “Well that’s not a reason...I’m not granting it,” she said. He was disqualified from driving for 12 months and fined $500.

Fake $50 notes continue to be found across local area

A spate of incidents surrounding counterfeit money has prompted police to issue another warning to local business owners and residents to check their money. A bank on High Street, Penrith, reported several serial numbers to the police on Tuesday, May 3, after they found fake $50 notes that were handed to them by small businesses across Penrith and St Marys. The serial numbers of the notes detected are HK 10772554, VD 13547221, CF 09680347, and BK 98605475. A fast food store on Russell Street, Emu Plains, also located a fake $50 note with the serial number GH 01084236 between 8pm on Monday, May 2, and 10pm on Tuesday, May 3. A local taxi driver also reported a fake $50 note that he received between Friday, May 6 and Monday, May 9, with the serial number MD 04027130. Have you been named as Executor in a Will? Being an Executor is a very important responsibility. Not only are you the person that a deceased person has chosen to represent them after their death, but you are personally responsible for the assets of the deceased person’s estate and ensuring that the debts of the estate are paid before any distribution takes place. If you have been appointed as an Executor, it is important that you seek expert legal advice as to what your responsibilities are to ensure that you don’t leave yourself open for any personal liability. The responsibilities of an Executor of a deceased person’s Will can include: 1. Taking steps to arrange a funeral; 2. Ascertaining the assets of the estate by writing to all of the asset holders; 3. Ascertaining the debts of the estate and ensuring that they are paid out

of the estate’s assets; 4. Complying with any other wishes in the Will that may relate to things like whether the person is to be buried or cremated, who is to appointed as the guardian of the deceased person’s infant children and other such requests. If you do not act in accordance with the laws dictating an Executor’s responsibilities, you might find yourself personally liable and at the wrong end of expensive litigation. This can include anything from distributing assets too early, distributing assets to the wrong people or not sufficiently identifying potential claims on a deceased person’s estate. If you have any questions about your roles and responsibilities as an Executor, contact us today.

The boy’s sister immediately ran up to them, and the car drove away from the area.

The World’s Most Efficient Gas Log Space Heaters

Investigators from Penrith Local Area Command have commenced inquiries into the matter. The man has been described to police as aged in his 30s, Caucasian, having brown shoulder length hair, a full brown beard, and wearing a white t-shirt. Penrith Council welcomes an announcement that the proposed merge point that would direct all aircraft flying into the new Western Sydney Airport above Blaxland and then over Penrith has been scrapped. One of Council’s key recommendations to the Environmental Impact Statement process was that all alternatives be assessed to minimise environmental impacts and provide a more equitable distribution of noise. Council’s position has always been that the airport must deliver maximum benefits and minimum impacts for the community and we have voiced this strongly to all levels of government. We will continue to push for an airport that delivers significant benefits

for our community, and this includes passenger rail connecting the airport and the Western Sydney region to the North and South. The North South rail link would transform western Sydney, reshape our region and deliver jobs closer to home. With the right investment we can be more competitive nationally and globally and create new business and employment opportunities. Rail will re-shape the region and be followed by new town centres and jobs within 30 minutes of where workers live. Council’s full submission to the EIS is located here: https://www.penrithcity. nsw.gov.au/airport.

ALDI confirms new Glenmore Park store will open in 2017 DALE DRINKWATER

LDI Australia has confirmed Glenmore Park’s 20,000 residents will get their very own store by the end of next year. An ALDI spokesperson said ALDI Glenmore Park will provide career opportunities for local residents by supporting up to 20 permanent staff positions. “The latest advice from the developer is that the Glenmore Park store is on track to open in late 2017, with construction for the centre expected to commence shortly,” she said. “We believe there is a strong appetite among Glenmore Park residents for an alternative grocery store and look forward to showing even more people the benefits ALDI can bring to their wallets and lifestyles.” Once open, the store will have more than 1,000 square metres of retail space and promises shoppers 1,350 high quality products, including fresh fruit, vegetables and bread delivered daily. here’s nothing fresher and more organic than growing your own produce at home, but how do you produce more complex items such as eggs? Penrith Council has created a series of workshops to answer questions like this, and help people live more sustainably at home. The Chooks in Backyards Sustainable Living Workshop will be held this weekend, on Sunday, May 15 from 10am to 12pm at Penrith Regional Gallery. The free workshop will help locals learn

T

how to keep chickens at home and reap the range of benefits they bring. “Keeping chooks is a great way to recycle your household food waste, and have fresh eggs right on your doorstep,” a Council spokesperson said. “It’s also a great way of knowing the conditions the chickens have been raised in.” The workshop will cover things like behavioural characteristics of different breeds, how to design an enclosure and how to look after them. For more information or to RSVP to Chooks in Backyards, call 4732 7983 or email andrew.hewson@penrith.city.

Magic of ballet is coming to Penrith Sydney International Regatta Centre to host incredible performance by the Australian Ballet DALE DRINKWATER

he magic and the beauty of ballet is coming to Penrith with a free outdoor performance at the picturesque Sydney International Regatta Centre. Last Friday, the Australian Ballet officially launched its Ballet Under The Stars, that will draw major crowds to the region for its Saturday, November 5 performance. Executive Director of The Australian Ballet, Libby Christie, said every year the company performs one major community concert for free, in population centres where kids are learning ballet. “In Penrith in particular, there are thousands of kids per week who learn ballet, and across Australia over 400,000 kids learn dance every week,” she said. “Just imagine how many families in western Sydney will have kids who are learning dance and ballet who will be able to take advantage of this free outdoor performance.” Plus, western Sydney is lucky enough to have secured the program exclusively for the next three years. “We are confident that our performance here over a three year period will encour-

age people from around Australia, and internationally, to come to western Sydney and experience what you’ve got to offer here,” Ms Christie added. The Australian Ballet’s Artistic Director, David McAllister, said the performance will be mixed with highlights of the company’s repertoire, including Act II of Stephen Baynes’ Swan Lake. “Lucas Jervies is going to create a pas de deux from the Ballet of Spartacus, that will be premiered on the night... We’re also going to be staging two of the works we have created by Alice Topp and Richard House that will be on the program,” he said. “So many people associate ballet with Swan Lake, and to present that in a beautiful outdoor venue on a lake will really add so much to the performance.” Member for Penrith and Minister for Tourism, Stuart Ayres, said the event was secured through the NSW Government’s Destination NSW, in partnership with Penrith Council. “This community performance... will be a major draw card for visitors who are expected to inject over $1.3 million into the local visitor economy during the next three years,” he said. Error must be corrected

Shorten a chance of winning I never imagined Bill Shorten would be a chance of winning this election but as the days go by, the more I feel he has a shot at becoming Prime Minister. If he does, it will be the ultimate embarrassment for Malcolm Turnbull who, in my opinion, is coming across as smug and entitled

during the early days of the campaign. Shorten is portraying himself as a fighter for the working class which will certainly help in the seats, such as Lindsay, that he is trying to win back for Labor. STEVE WILLOUGHBY, CRANEBROOK

Why hasn’t the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) issued some sort of statement to say that the current media advertising regarding how to vote for the Senate is not correct and is misleading? Much has been said over the last two weeks or so on talkback radio about this and the error has been acknowledged by the AEC. Voters are not required to fill in “at least six boxes above the line” as the ads say in order to lodge a valid ballot paper. Only one box needs to be filled in and this will be a valid vote. Filling in more boxes will have the effect of preferencing the additional marked candidates in the order in which they have been numbered. We have Pauline Hanson to thank for raising this issue which she did on radio station 2GB with presenter Ray Hadley and as mentioned previously, Ms Hanson’s interpretation of the correct procedure has been verified by the AEC. Concern over unit plans Regarding the planned thousands of units for Penrith (Weekender April 21). Has Penrith Council gone mad? Where is the infrastructure for the roads, let alone the emergency department at Nepean Hospital, where are we going to put the excess people and cars? This Council obviously has never sat at the emergency ward for five hours waiting for a bed. All they think of is the rates this will bring them. NAME AND ADDRESS WITHHELD BY REQUEST, PENRITH

Food

Our tastes, and menus, are changing for good KATE REID

hile veganism may once have been a rarity, it seems that ethical eating has gained plenty of momentum in recent years. As more and more diners seek out plant-based meals the restaurant scene is following suit, with big name Sydney eateries Gigi Pizzeria, Gelato Blue and Soul Burger all moving to plant-based menus. But it’s not just in the city where things are changing; local businesses are also starting to respond to customer demand. One of the businesses leading the charge is Naked Flame Craft Pizza in South Penrith, a woodfired pizzeria that currently offers six vegan pizzas as part of its menu. After some initial skepticism to his sister’s move to veganism, owner Chris Chandler eventually came around to the idea of ethical eating and when it was time to open the pizzeria, he had no doubt there would be plant-based meals on the menu. As it turned out the choice was a smart business decision, with the pizzas attracting an overwhelmingly positive response from customers. “Within a few weeks the first vegans came out and tried the menu, put it on one

W

of the vegan Facebook pages and we’ve now had people coming from as far as Manly to try our pizza,” Mr Chandler said. Other local vegan friendly businesses include Go Primal in Penrith and Monte’s Pizza in Blaxland, which both offer a substantial range of vegan options. There’s also local vegan food companies like Yum Artisan Creations, Rawsome Creations and Kinda Bacon, along with On Plate Ethics, a Penrith-based home delivered vegan meal service. People who follow a vegan lifestyle avoid the use of all animal products including meat, dairy, eggs, honey, leather, fur and wool. There’s a wide range of reasons why people choose to follow a vegan lifestyle including ethical, environmental and health concerns. Local resident Rachel O’Reilly went vegan just over a year ago and while she finds most places are happy to modify meal options to suit her diet, she does tend to gravitate towards eateries that offer vegan meals. “If I know somewhere has vegan options, or they’re at least friendly and responsive to the questions, I will return,” she said. “Over time people are becoming more and more ethical and I really think that this is something that’s going to keep growing,” Mr Chandler added.

his Sunday, May 15, Somerset Cottage Childcare Centre at Nepean Hospital will be celebrating its 25th birthday. Over 50 children of the staff at Nepean Hospital attend Somerset on a daily basis and almost 30 staff at the centre care for them. Early Childhood Teacher Meg Lockley, who has been working at Somerset since 2003, said she is proud to be a part of it. “I’ve seen a lot of great changes over that time and it just feels good to be providing

T

this service to the staff that need it at the hospital,” she said. “We pride ourselves on providing flexible and responsive care while supporting the families of the local health district.” Somerset is open from 6am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday, with night time care available if staff members need it. “We’re a very unique community with diverse families and a proud history of 25 years providing this great service,” Ms Lockley said. Families who were, and are, involved with Somerset are invited to the 25th anniversary celebrations that kick-off at 11am this Sunday, May 15 and run until 3pm.

COUNCIL SNAPSHOT

IMPROVE YOUR SMILE WITH US

Penrith Council has supported amendments to the plan of the Central Precinct of the Jordan Springs development. The Central Precinct is located between Jordan Springs in the west, and Ropes Crossing in the east, just north of Werrington County. The amendments were voted for unanimously, and involved moving the Village Centre location, south of the original location so it is more central in the development. This will mean road networks will be reconfigured, resulting in a realigned east-west collector road, and the extension of a local street into the precinct. The changes will be placed on public exhibition for at least 28 days and consultation will be undertaken with relevant government agencies.

At O’Meara Orthodontics you’re off to a running start on the road to a beautiful and healthy smile. Dr Anthony J. O’Meara BDS, MDSc, FICD

ocal Year 10 student Kaylem Macdonald has just completed a special three day Indigenous art mentoring program and was the only student in western Sydney to do so. The St Dominic’s College student was put forward to take part in the workshop, run by the Australian Indigenous Mentoring Program (AIME). The 17 Indigenous students from across Australia that participated in the intensive art and design workshop could have their work placed onto AIME’s apparel, with Kaylem thrilled at that prospect. “It’s pretty exciting that I might be seeing everyone wear my design around – it will be really cool,” he said. Kaylem said he has always taken a keen interest in art and feels like he is more of a painter than anything else. “Being at the camp was really fun because we would just wake up and basically start doing our work,” he said. “When doing art, it makes me feel really good, especially drawing and painting.” Kaylem, one of 17 interns, was selected from almost 1,000 Year 9 students who participated in art modules as part of the AIME program last year. At the camp, Kaylem created an artwork of a turtle intertwined with a snake,

from operating hours that reflect a small scale café environment. Council has formulated a response to the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal’s review of the local government rating system. In their submission, Council responded to the 11 rates freeze policy issues identified by IPART, as Council believes they could be affected by them if any future merger proposals are considered. Council agreed with IPART’s proposed tax principles, but does not support a move to a Capital Improved Value as a method of determining rates. They said Councils should be able to choose their own method which best suits them. After Council’s submission, IPART will provide a report to the NSW Government by June, with a draft report to be released by August. A final report on the matter will be provided by December. The next Council meeting will be an Ordinary Council Meeting on Monday, May 23, and will be the meeting where the Operational Plan quarterly review is presented. Teachers to be trained as specialists in maths and science In a NSW first, future primary school teachers are being trained as science and maths specialists to engage younger students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects, NSW Premier Mike Baird and Education Minister Adrian Piccoli announced this week. Primary teachers are currently trained

as generalists in a range of subjects. From this year, teaching students from at least three NSW universities can become STEM specialists by electing to study additional maths and science courses. “These specialists will help give young students more confidence in maths and science, so they’re well prepared for high school and future careers,” Mr Baird said.

“Employers are crying out for workers skilled in maths and science, so we want to give our students every chance of studying these subjects at a high level,” he added. The first group of graduates with a specialisation in maths and science will be eligible to teach in NSW schools from the end of 2017.

Delays likely on motorway Roads and Maritime Services has advised motorists of changed traffic conditions that will be in place on the M4 Motorway near Kent Road bridge at Claremont Meadows from Sunday, May 15 as work progresses on the Werrington Arterial Road upgrade. The Australian and NSW Governments are funding a $70 million project to build a new link between the M4 Motorway and Great Western Highway as part of the $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan to improve key arterial roads in western Sydney and reduce travel times. As part of the upgrade, work to install safety screens on the new shared pedestrian and cyclist bridge across the M4 Motorway is continuing. To progress this work the M4 Motorway will be temporarily reduced to one lane in each direction for around 50 metres near the Kent Road bridge from Sunday, May 15 to Thursday, May 19 between 9pm and 5am, weather permitting. Electronic signs will be in place along the M4 Motorway to advise motorists of the changed traffic conditions. Motorists are also advised the planned intersection closure at Gipps Street and Sunflower Drive (north) at Claremont Meadows will be extended by around a month until late June to complete the intersection upgrade. Through traffic on Gipps Street will be maintained at all times.

Dementia worry People with dementia under the age of 65 are in danger of missing out on essential services and support as they continue to be caught up in gaps between the disability and aged care sectors. New research released by Alzheimer’s Australia NSW, has found that people with younger onset dementia – that is with the onset of the symptoms of dementia under the age of 65 – have, for many years, fallen through the cracks of the disability and aged care systems, with both sectors seeing the other as being better placed to respond. There are an estimated 25,000 people with younger onset dementia in Australia and they face very different challenges to those diagnosed with dementia over the age of 65.

The federal election has now been announced.

Sydney has once again proven it is the home of premiere musicals, with the NSW Government securing the Australian debut of ‘Beautiful: The Carole King Musical’. Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres said the highly acclaimed Broadway production tells the inspiring true story of Carole King’s rise from schoolgirl to superstar. “NSW securing ‘Beautiful: The Carole King Musical’ is a major coup, following the show’s acclaimed production on Broadway, which won two Tony Awards, as well as the 2015 Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album,” Mr Ayres said. It will premiere in 2017.

NEW BUSINESS IN TOWN

Jessica Lindeberg with her friends before the fun run. Photo: Megan Dunn JADE ALIPRANDI

‘fun run’ was built into Blackwell Public School’s cross country event last week, to help raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF). Eight-year-old Jessica Lindeberg is the only student in the school who suffers from Type 1 Diabetes after she was diagnosed in January this year. Jessica’s mother, Melissa Lindeberg, said she is over the moon about the support the school has given her daughter since her diagnosis. “I was just so amazed and impressed that the school would do this fun run to help such an important cause,” she said. “Jessica and all the kids seemed to enjoy themselves at the fun run – she’s very lucky with the good friends she has around her.”

A

Over $8000 was raised for JDRF, an international research foundation working to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes, and is also aiming to improve the lives of those who have it. Although it is something Jessica has to manage every day for the rest of her life through daily tests, Jessica’s mother, Melissa, said she is handling her diagnosis really well. “It’s amazing how resilient children can be – she’s just been amazing through the whole process,” she said. Jessica has to test her blood glucose levels between eight and 10 times a day by pricking herself using a special kit. She also has to monitor everything she eats. Type 1 Diabetes is when the pancreas stops producing insulin, with around 10 per cent of diabetes cases treated as Type 1. For more information on JDRF, visit www.jdrf.org.au.

M

y television series of choice at the present time is ‘Mad Men’ (set in 1960s New York, following the lives of advertisers working on Madison Avenue). It is a fascinating insight to the social and working mores of the time, as well as providing subtle messages and discussion about issues relevant today. One of the themes of the show that interest me particularly is gender and sexism. Women in the show were primarily confined to the role of housewife or secretary. They rarely got promoted to any higher level positions, and those that were able to climb, got left out of the all-male after hours negotiations that seemed crucial to forging deals. Power was clearly in the hands of the men and any ambitious women had to not only work harder than their male counterparts for the same recognition, there was only so far they could rise on the ‘ladder’. It is easy to dismiss the portrayals of women in the 1960s as ‘history’ and something that used to happen a long

time ago. But social commentators have pointed out that this behaviour is not as far back in our past as we would like to think it is. And that in some workplaces or industries, is still evident, albeit more subtle. We now have laws that prohibit discrimination based on gender that have given women far more career choices than in the 1960s. But statistics show that women still struggle to ‘rise to the top’. We have strict laws around sexual harassment in the workplace that have abolished the openly accepted ‘sexual banter’ depicted in ‘Mad Men’. Yet many women can attest to subtle (or hidden) situations in their workplaces today. As a woman running my own business, I sometimes experience unequal treatment based on my gender. While I have far greater opportunities than women in the 1960s, it is too easy to dismiss the overt gender inequality they experienced as irrelevant now. See you next week.

How to get the most out of your staff (continued)

www.wsbusiness.com.au

C

ontinuing on from two weeks ago talking about how to get the most out of your employees, it is important to remember that the smart, successful employers hire people with the right skills to get things done. Developing and treating your people the right way is so important for a business. Here are some more tips: Assess performance and make adjustments. You have to assess performance and make any necessary changes, and I am not just talking about annual performance evaluations. A formal process may occur once a year, but effective management requires assessing performance much more frequently. Reward achievement. Rewarding employees for their productivity, even those who are not necessarily the usual stand-outs, helps cultivate a sense that improvement and hard work is worthwhile. Most importantly, don’t let productivity and improvements among staffers go unnoticed and they will continue to improve and be more efficient. Manage your expectations. Perhaps your employees aren’t the problem,

maybe it’s you! It is important for any employer to lay out specific expectations and benchmarks ahead of the game. Sitting down and drawing up a plan of action and expectations is very useful to make sure that both you and your employees stay on track. Provide a challenging environment. If you were an employee, you would not want to be in an unchallenging and repetitive environment, and your employees don’t like it either. Ensure that you provide a challenging and dynamic work environment that fosters creativity and excitement. Lead by example. One of the greatest motivators for an employee is seeing a manager or supervisor who works harder than anyone else in the business. Leading by example is an underestimated motivator that can foster a productive work ethic, and produce some great results. Don’t be afraid to let an employee go. While it is never the intention of an employer to hire someone who doesn’t work out, sometimes cutting an employee loose is a necessary part of running a business.

t’s Wallacia Hotel’s new team that is bringing a dynamic and fresh approach, and taking the Wallacia Hotel to the next level. General Manager Christopher O’Shea took over Wallacia Hotel in April 2015 and spent the last year building it up to being the ‘place to be’ for food, drinks and entertainment. “I had a vision of where I wanted Wallacia Hotel to be. Within the year, I had met those targets. Now with my new vision in place and a fresh team behind me, we aim to meet new targets by the end of 2016,” he said. To really take the hotel to the next level, Mr O’Shea employed the help of seasoned industry professionals, like new Executive Head Chef, June Henry. Mr Henry has 25 years experience in the industry, has won many awards and plans to step up the food offerings and taste at Wallacia Hotel. With the support of new Sous Chef, George Ngati, Mr Henry has high hopes of putting Wallacia Hotel on the map as the place to be

for food. Also joining the team as Functions and Accommodation Manager is Veronica Farisco. Ms Farisco brings her sound knowledge and experience, and has managed to take the hotel from running functions once a month to one or two a week. “I am so excited to be a part of this new team and want to make Wallacia Hotel as great as it used to be,” Ms Farisco said. “We can run any function from weddings to ceremonies to birthday parties and high teas – anything that our client needs, we can work to suit what they want.’’ In addition to its new, top of the line staff, the Wallacia Hotel boasts weekly entertainment with poker, karaoke, pool comps, DJs, meat raffles, live bands on a Saturday and acoustic sessions on a Sunday. Wallacia Hotel is also becoming more community involved, by starting a monthly farmers market and plans for future fetes and festivals. For more information, visit www. wallaciahotel.com.au.

HISTORY

Turning back Time

COMPILED BY DALE DRINKWATER

Ron changed people’s lives

One year ago...

O

nly the 1990s could get away with calling mentally or physically handicapped members of the community ‘the gimps’. And that’s what local man Ron Oxley, known as ‘The Sultan of Sweat’, called members of his Fitness World Gym in Peachtree during the early 1990s. “I call them gimps to gee them up and it does the trick,” Mr Oxley told the Weekender at the time. “If someone is not keen on putting in the hard work I say ‘have a go ya gimp’ and they give me a smile or a dirty look and get down to business.” Before we get ahead of ourselves in political correctness or sensitivity, Mr Oxley was working with people in the community to regain something we all take for granted – walking. At the time, all but one (who suffered from cerebral palsy) of Mr Oxley’s ‘gimps’ were trying to regain the use of their bodies following accidents on the road or in the workplace. Several members suffered brain damage but, in all cases, lost their leg movement, and saw Mr Oxley as their “champion of champions”. Mr Oxley became a local hero through his devotion to working with mentally and physically handicapped locals, through developing exercises and apparatuses to help improve their movement. He changed the lives of locals through inventing a flying fox contraption that

One of Ron Oxley’s gym members using his invention enabled people to practice walking confidently knowing they wouldn’t fall to the floor if they lost their balance. One of Mr Oxley’s gym members, who was hit by a car and suffered brain

damage, said the flying fox was brilliant. “[A neurosurgeon] said I would never walk again – I’ve already proved him wrong on one count and I’ll do the same with the other,” he said.

Remember when... It’s been a while since Penrith has seen a parade of horses down its main street. This photo, taken in 1971, shows the ceremony granting Freedom of Entry to the City to the 6th Engineer Stores Regiment of the Australian Army. It was part of the Centenary of Local Government celebrations.

The Weekender’s May 15, 2015 edition covered former Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s ‘have a go’ Budget. Our local businesses were beneficiaries with the announcement of an immediate $20,000 tax write off, and the company tax rate was cut by 1.5 per cent to 28.5 per cent. And childcare was made simpler, more affordable and more flexible with a childcare subsidy to meet the cost of childcare for parents who are working. We celebrated the completion of The Northern Road upgrades between Andrews Road and Borrowdale Way, that were fast tracked and completed five years ahead of schedule. Penrith Council announced they would support an airport at Badgerys Creek, and change their focus to getting the biggest benefit out the development for the future of Penrith. Students from St Marys South Public School got a once in a lifetime chance to meet Prince Harry during an excursion to the Opera House. This time last year the Panthers were about to go head-to-head with Manly at Brookvale Oval, while Western Sydney Wanderers coach Tony Popovic extended his contract until 2018.

WARRIORS

Penrith’s defence will be a key this weekend. Photo: Megan Dunn

TROY DODDS @troydodds

B

efore a ball was kicked this season, the period between rounds seven and 10 always looked dangerous for the Penrith Panthers. A marathon stint on the road, after an extremely tough draw in the first six weeks, was always going to be a huge test. As it turns out, the sojourn from Pepper Stadium hasn’t gone too badly at all – wins over the Roosters and Raiders, and a narrow loss to the high flying Cronulla Sharks, have put the Panthers into the top eight. Chalk up a win this Saturday over the Warriors and it has well and truly been a successful period away from home. Penrith’s last-start win over Canberra was far from impressive but securing

the two competition points was really all that mattered particularly after such an inconsistent, and at times unlucky, start to the season. Now it’s time to start winning consistently and to start winning well. As we approach the half-way mark of the season, the Panthers need to find their groove to be a real shot at a top four finish and a tilt at the premiership. And while the side’s close finishes and form late in games would have most of the experts ruling out a visit to ANZ Stadium in October, the Panthers aren’t far off where they need to be to threaten the best sides in the competition (namely the Broncos, Cowboys and Sharks). Penrith’s missed tackle rate is a concern that still hasn’t been fixed – 39 missed tackles against Canberra, 40 against the Sharks. Somehow, the Panthers are scrambling well enough to ensure that concerning statistic hasn’t been reflected on the scoreboard but it’s only a matter of time before the at times loose defence up

the middle comes back to haunt them. While Dean Whare and Te Maire Martin won’t be seen again this season, the Panthers are close to full-strength for this weekend’s game with Waqa Blake expected to return from injury. There is some speculation that Bryce Cartwright will move into the halves for the game but we’ll have to wait until kickoff to see if that eventuates. For the Warriors, Ben Matulino and Bodene Thompson have both been recalled while Tuimoala Lolohea and Thomas Leuluai return from injury. Shaun Johnson is the obvious danger man with his erratic play often very hard to handle, and shutting him down will be a real key in this contest. These words may well be used against me come 4.45pm on Saturday but I’ll say it anyway – I don’t love the look of the Warriors side on paper. The Panthers should dominate in every facet of the game, with the only real danger coming from the unpredictable

While Penrith fans have needed a doctor on standby for almost every single match this season, I have the feeling you’ll be able to give him the afternoon off on Saturday. This game presents the opportunity for the big win we’ve all been hoping for since the start of the season. Tip: Panthers by 18.

PANTHER RUMBLINGS with the Masked Panther

WALLACE SET TO STAY » I’m told Peter Wallace (pictured) has

gone from having no chance of securing a new deal with Penrith to being very close to being offered a one-year extension. With Wallace unlikely to be in huge demand from other clubs, the Panthers will most likely wait until their recruitment is finalised before seeing exactly what they can offer Wallace. If he does get a new deal, it’s an amazing turnaround for the 30-year-old who many predicted would be on the outer given his unsettled relationship with coach Anthony Griffin.

» Still on Penrith’s halves, and there’s

growing speculation that Jamie Soward won’t see out the final year of his contract with the club in 2017.

» It has been a busy week for the Pan-

thers in Christchurch ahead of this Saturday’s game against the Warriors. The team arrived on Tuesday night and held an open training session at Christchurch Boys High School yesterday morning. They also participated in a skills clinic with local juniors at Hornby Panthers yesterday afternoon. Today (Thursday), the Panthers will visit a number of schools around Christchurch.

» Is North Queensland star James Tamou

Penrith-bound for the 2017 season? The 27-year-old, who has played 11 Origin games for New South Wales, has been linked with the Panthers for some time but gave the strongest indication yet this week that he’s on the verge of leaving the defending premiers, failing to water down speculation that a move to a Sydney club was imminent. The Cowboys are struggling to retain all of their off contract stars and only loyalty would keep Tamou at the Cowboys as the money on the table

from Penrith is significantly higher than what’s been offered at North Queensland. If the Australian representative did move to Sydney’s west, it would ensure the Panthers had one of the best packs in the competition – especially with the talent that is coming through the junior ranks. I’m told Penrith officials are very confident that they’ll get the deal across the line before the end of the month.

» Penrith are poised to announce the

mid-season signing of Maroons Origin prospect Chris Grevsmuhl. South Sydney could release Grevsmuhl within days, allowing him to join the Panthers. The move has been on the cards for some time and Penrith recently made space in their salary cap by releasing Elijah Taylor to the Wests Tigers. Grevsmuhl has already signed with Penrith for next season and is struggling to get game time with the Rabbitohs.

» A number of young Panthers have

been named in the initial NSW Under 16’s and Under 18’s squads for the upcoming junior State of Origin games. Samuel Radovu, Sean O’Sullivan, Jesse Abbott and William Burns have all made the Under 18’s squad, while Lyndsay Smith, Zach Cini and Shawn Blore have made the Under 16’s squad. Blues and Penrith legend Brad Fittler will be coaching both teams.

» Panthers will celebrate the club’s proud history and launch the Panthers Hall of Fame at the 50th Season Gala Dinner next month. The special invite-only event will be held on Saturday, June 25, at the Panthers Exhibition Marquee next to Panthers Leagues Club. On the night four Panthers greats will be revealed as the inaugural inductees into the Pan-

thers Hall of Fame. An expert panel has already elected a shortlist of 12 nominees from amongst the 559 players to have represented the club. Over the next two months, through Pepper Money Magic Moments, the club will feature some memorable on-field moments for all 12 nominees. By voting for their favourite moment on the Panthers website, Panthers fans can go in the running for some great prizes.

» Speculation is mounting that Bryce

Cartwright will make his State of Origin debut this year, despite Blues coach Laurie Daley making it clear that loyalty will play a significant role in his team selection. The belief is that Cartwright has

done enough to warrant selection for the upcoming series given his great form for Penrith and his performance for City last weekend. He would be a dynamite addition to the Blues’ bench, that’s for sure.

» While I’ve never been a fan of stop-

ping the NRL competition’s momentum after just nine rounds for representative football, there is little doubt that the appetite is huge for both Test footy and the City-Country clash. The crowds were great for both games and the TV ratings were sensational – 767,000 viewers tuned in on Channel Nine to watch Australia down New Zealand in a dour game in Newcastle while 369,000 people watched City-Country.

Anthony Griffin is happy to be in Christchurch

NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87

I Our new

‘home’

t may have been a bumpy ride but Panthers coach Anthony Griffin says he’s excited to be playing a ‘home’ game in Christchurch this Saturday against the New Zealand Warriors. Touching down at Christchurch airport after a rather turbulent two hour flight on Tuesday evening, Griffin said he couldn’t wait to kick off Penrith’s four year deal on New Zealand’s beautiful south island. “It’s an arrangement Phil Gould has done for the next four years, and we’re very happy to be able to give up a home game and come here and form a relationship with the region,” he said. “[The deal] is obviously going to benefit the club financially but it’ll also allow us to spread our brand and values into another area.” Penrith’s deal with Christchurch is similar to the one they have with Bathurst Council, where one Panthers home fixture every season for the next four years will be played out of Christchurch’s AMI Stadium. As part of the deal, the Panthers have visited local schools in the Christchurch area as well as run a number of juniors clinics with young kids. Griffin said his team were pumped to be playing in Christchurch and at the home stadium of Super Rugby’s Crusaders. “I know Christchurch more for the other code (rugby union) but I’m looking

forward to getting around as much as I can this weekend and getting to know many league followers,” he said. “It’ll also be good to get a handle on how the code operates here and I know the whole team were very excited for this trip away. “[AMI Stadium] looks like a really good field from what I’ve seen on telly. The match is going to be a sell-out too, so it’ll be great to be able to play in front of 18,000 people.” Penrith have travelled across the ditch with a 19-man squad which includes centre Waqa Blake, who is set to return from a hip injury and reserve grade prop Moses Leota, who is yet to make his first grade debut. With Junior Kiwi James Fisher-Harris in some doubt with his own hip injury, Leota could very well make his NRL debut in his home country. After a week off due to the NRL’s representative round, Griffin said he’s happy to have the team back together ahead of this weekend’s vital game. “We’ve been split up for a couple of weeks actually, so it’s timely we all get to come back together on this trip to Christchurch,” he said. “Since we played in Bathurst a couple of guys played in the Test match and half a dozen guys played in the City Country game. It’s been good to get everyone back together. “Christchurch is going to be a really good place to spend the week.” Kick-off is at 3pm on Saturday, May 14.

THE DREW REVIEW with Brad Drew

I LOVE REP FOOTY! I have to say I really enjoyed the rep round on the weekend, there was some great footy played particularly on Saturday night with the PNG v Fiji and the Somoa v Tonga tussle, it’s refreshing to see these talented footballers ditch the shackles of week to week NRL! There has been some criticism of the Aussie v Kiwi game on Friday, and true it was probably the least entertaining game of the weekend but I think the dour affair was probably the result of a Kiwi side well down on troops and particularly their more potent attacking weapons and an Aussie team coming off three straight defeats, knuckling down, not taking too many risks and professionally getting the job done. The Aussies have come in for some criticism but it’s a team full of proven champions and I would be reluctant to

write them off after this performance. It seems every year the traditional City v Country game comes in for the same old criticism with calls from all quarters questioning its relevance, but I for one really enjoyed the game. Again it gave some up and coming superstars a chance to impress on the rep stage without the shackles and it was very refreshing to see the Brad Fittler coached City, chock full of young Panthers put on an attacking master class to defy the odds and give it to the country boys! Bryce Cartwright (pictured) in particular was a standout and could be on the verge of Origin selection. A big congratulations to all the Panthers who represented on the weekend, including the young blokes in the Junior Kangaroos and Kiwis, you all made a great account of yourselves and certainly

did the club and its fans proud! Other standouts for mine were Tyrone Peachey and Leilani Latu for City, young Nathan Cleary for the Junior Kangaroos and I thought DWZ played very tough for the Kiwis on Friday night.

Big test for the Panthers this week, taking their home game across the ditch. I’m worried all this travel might take its toll this week, but I’m still tipping the Panthers in tight one. Enjoy the weekend of footy!

NATHAN TAYLOR @natetaylor87

P

enrith Panthers captain Matt Moylan has once again hosed down speculation over a possible State of Origin berth to concentrate on this weekend’s all-important match against the New Zealand Warriors. The Panthers fullback is neck and neck with fellow local junior Lachlan Coote to get the coveted Blues number 1 jersey, when teams are finally announced by selectors next weekend. Speaking in Christchurch on Wednesday morning, the 24-year-old said his focus is on winning more games for the Panthers and not a sky blue jumper. “I haven’t really thought about it to be honest,” Moylan said.

“After coming off a long lay-off from injury, I’m just trying to get back out there and focus on playing good footy for the club. “That sort of stuff (Origin selection) takes care of itself. If you’re playing well enough you’re going to be in the frame, I just have to do my job for the team.” Since returning from a back injury in Round 5, Moylan has slowly worked his way back into form and has helped guide the Panthers into a top eight position. Moylan said he’s feeling a lot stronger as the weeks roll on and is somewhat happy with how his side is travelling. “I’m feeling good, I’m just trying to get back into it and the body is starting to get used to the grind again of playing first grade week in, week out,” he said. “We (Penrith) are going along alright… we’ve just got to tidy up a few things in each match.

“The body is starting to get used to the grind again of playing first grade week in, week out”

“We’ve been in all our games this year, we just lost our way a bit in a couple of them and didn’t come away with the points. We’ve got to concentrate on trying to finish off the game well.” Penrith fans will hope Moylan and his teammates are in for huge performances this Saturday afternoon against an inconsistent Warriors outfit in Christchurch.

Big weekend of

recognition

I

ndigenous superstars including Johnathan Thurston, Greg Inglis and Sam Thaiday have leant their voice and support in a new commercial for more to be done to include and recognise all Indigenous peoples within communities. The commercial will air at a time when players, clubs and fans will celebrate Indigenous Round this weekend, with the game paying tribute to the many Indigenous players and communities that play a vital role within rugby league and wider society. The NRL will partner with RECOGNISE for the third year in a row, providing a united voice to the movement to

recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Australian Constitution and ensure there is no place for racial discrimination. All matches will feature recognition of the round and the importance of Indigenous players, coaches, staff and communities within the game. The RECOGNISE ‘R’ will be painted on all 40 metre lines, referees will wear Indigenous inspired jerseys, traditional dances and ceremonies will take place before matches and a host of teams will wear Indigenous Round jerseys. NRL Indigenous welfare and education manager Dean Widders has spent time with all NRL players and clubs over the past month.

he headline on the Monday, October 6, 2003 edition of the Daily Telegraph summed it up: “Perfect”. Penrith’s 18-6 Grand Final win over the Sydney Roosters on October 5, 2003 was one of the most magical days in the club’s history. Despite finishing minor premiers, the Panthers still went into the season decider against the Roosters as underdogs, but defied all expectations by winning by 12 points in wet conditions at ANZ Stadium. The Telegraph’s front page declared: “This is what joy looks like. 21-year-old Luke Rooney scores one of his two tries in the game no one said the Panthers could win. For Penrith, fairytales do come true”. Inside, under the headline “Tears, cheers and league’s greatest fairytale in years”, the praise continued: “The Grand Final of October 5, 2003, will forever be remembered as one of the greatest games of rugby league”.

“Penrith’s victory in last night’s momentous grand final provedthat nothing is impossible in the game of rugby league”

In front of a crowd of 81,166, the Panthers were simply superb. “The ferocity and intensity was greater than some State of Origin matches,” the Telegraph declared in its match report. “The opening set of six tackles alone was as fierce as anyone could remember.” After the game, Scott Sattler – who produced one of the most

FLASHBACK

The front page of the Daily Telegraph

NEW REALITY SERIES TO DEBUT

Erin Molan

Australia’s first rugby league reality series begins when ‘The NRL Rookie’ premieres on Tuesday, May 31, at 7.30pm on 9GO! The winner of ‘The NRL Rookie’ will land the coveted prize of a contract with one of the 16 clubs in the National Rugby League. 28 finalists have been selected from thousands of applicants around the world – in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the United Kingdom and United States. They will be pushed to the absolute limits of physical and psychological endurance, with searching assessments of their rugby

league skills, in a quest to win the ultimate prize. Episode one introduces series host Erin Molan and the 28 candidates to Head Coach, Brad Fittler, who will mentor the Rookies throughout the competition. Fittler is one of Australia’s best-known rugby league talents. He was the youngest ever NSW State of Origin player (debuting in 1990 at the age of 18), captained 14 teams in Origin from 1990-2004, won two premierships (with the Panthers and the Roosters) and is currently an expert commentator for Channel Nine. Molan and Fittler will be joined by former

rugby league greats Mark “MG” Geyer and Adrian Lam, who will act as the forwards and backs coaches respectively. In each episode the coaching team will be joined by current and former NRL players to manage, educate and motivate the Rookies through their mountainous challenges. These guests include rugby league Immortal Wally Lewis, Billy Slater, Darren Lockyer, Paul Gallen, Anthony Minichiello, Adam “Mad Dog” MacDougall and Robbie Kearns. Boxing champ Danny Green will also be featured. The show premieres on Tuesday, May 31 at 7.30pm on 9GO!

LOWER GRADES » SG Ball: The Penrith Panthers have

won their first SG Ball title since 2006 following a 25-10 win over the Illawarra Steelers last Saturday afternoon at Pepper Stadium. Panthers captain Sean O’Sullivan was named Man of the Match in what was an excellent performance that saw him involved in just about everything. The Steelers opened the scoring early in the first half before Penrith finally got their first try of the afternoon through William Burns in the 25th minute. Three minutes later the Panthers got their second by the way of fullback Marlon Ritchie, which saw the home side lead 12-4 at the break. Penrith quickly extended their lead after half-time with Jake Tago and Brian Too crossing for tries. The Steelers made the score a little more respectable with a late try before the calm and steady O’Sullivan slotted over a 79th minute field goal to seal the deal. The win was a welcome one for the Panthers club who were without an SG Ball premiership for 10 years despite fielding some unbeatable sides.

» Intrust Super Premiership NSW: After

some pretty lean weeks the Penrith Panthers will return to action this Saturday afternoon at Pepper Stadium. Penrith will be missing some experience with Elijah Taylor now at the Wests Tigers but will welcome back Zach Dockar-Clay, who performed very well with the NSW Residents team last weekend.

The Panthers will be looking to get their season back on track when they take on the New Zealand Warriors at 2pm.

» Holden Cup: The Penrith Panthers

will look to extend their lead at the top of the Holden Cup ladder when they battle the New Zealand Warriors this Saturday morning at Pepper Stadium. The Panthers NYC team had five players involved in last Saturday’s Junior Kangaroos v Junior Kiwis clash at Pirtek Stadium, with all players returning unscathed. Kick-off between the Warriors and Panthers is at 10am.

» Ron Massey Cup: St Marys have

continued their losing streak in the Ron Massey Cup competition, this time going down to the Hills District Bulls 24-20. Try scorers for St Marys included Brent Naden (2), Tom Eisenhuth and Luke Nadurutalo. Josh Butfield kicked two from four. St Marys will enjoy this weekend off before taking on the Concord Burwood Wolves in Round 12.

ENTERTAINMENT PENRITH’S BIGGEST AND BEST LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE

Enjoying the ride

B KATE REID

lue Mountainsbased country music star Drew McAlister loves nothing more than writing a great song. Best known as one half of country duo McAlister Kemp, the talented singer/songwriter has always had a soft spot for creating that perfect tune, having written hundreds of tracks for himself and several other country artists. “I love the idea that you can sit down with a blank sheet of paper and not even much of an idea and at the end of three or four hours you can come up with a song that sometimes is fantastic, sometimes is mediocre, but the fact is you created something that day that didn’t exist a few days before,” he said. Drew has spent much of his life writing music and while he still enjoys the process, he does find his standards have changed somewhat. “It gets harder the older I get because you don’t settle for the things you used to settle for,” he laughed. “I wrote a lot of crap songs to get to this point.” Drew’s writing prowess was put to use on his latest release, and second solo

album, ‘Black Sky’. The album mixes personal tracks like ‘Miracle on the Way’, about the birth of his daughter through IVF, along with more light-hearted rock inspired tracks. “There’s a song on there called ‘More To It’, which is a really rocking kind of song about the fact there’s actually more to a country song than tailgates and dixie cuts,” Drew laughed. Changing the stereotypes surrounding country music is something close to Drew’s heart, but there is one aspect of the genre he’d never want to change – the fans. “I love country music fans, they’re pretty straight up, they’re pretty loyal, they’ll tell you how it is if they don’t like it too,” he laughed. “They’ve seen enough bullshit to know whether it’s real or it isn’t.” Drew will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL and is looking forward to giving local fans the chance to hear a selection of his new tracks live. “People want to hear great music and they want to have a good time,” Drew said, “So if you can just try and ensure your set is full of that stuff then people will come along for the ride with you.” Along with his solo work Drew also recently got together with fellow country music stars Adam Brand, Travis Collins, Matt Cornell and Mike Carr for a one off album and tour under the title Adam

Brand and the Outlaws. It was a chance for the country music star to get together with his mates and play some of their favourite tracks live. “It was a party album, and it was just about getting on the road and having fun and that’s what we did, with a bunch of great guys,” Drew said.

“We’ve all done enough gigs in our time to leave the egos at the door and we had a ball, it was a really cool experience.” Drew McAlister will be performing at Rooty Hill RSL on Friday, June 10 at 8pm. Tickets are $20. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.rootyhillrsl.com.au or call 9677 4916.

ust as the ordinary winery moggy it was named d after was anything but ordinary, here’s a wine thatt when you pull the cork proves that it too is anything g but ordinary. And you may need to tear this page out to rememberr the name, unless you’re pretty good with handling tricky y words, because it’s called The Athazagoraphobic Cat, the e word meaning a fear of being forgotten. It was so-named d in deference to moggy Audrey Hepburn (known generally y as Ordinary) that forever trotted along in the winery at the e heels of D’Arenberg’s Chief Winemaker, Chester Osborn n when he took over the job in McLaren Vale back in 1984. Made from 95 per cent Italian-origin Sagrantino and a five per cent hint of French-origin Cinsault, the 2011 is a predominantly tannic drop but with suggestions of quite e abundant flowery astringency, fruit flavours and some e complexity from the Sagrantino, and with nice aromaticss from the Cinsault that almost have one musing of a good d Burgundy. This unique ultra-premium $200 price-tag wine is avail-able from the D’Arenberg Cellar Door in McLaren Vale, orr online at www.darenberg.com.au; you’ll find it an ideall match with a winter’s braised lamb or pork roast. One to note: The Hunter Valley and the best of Semillon n are synonymous, and a now-available 2011 Margan Aged d Release Semillon off the company’s Beltree Vineyard thatt was planted back in the 1930s by the Elliot family, is one e that will have you coming back for more… and more. Made from grapes off vines yielding less than a tonne to o the acre, this is a wine of beautifully crisp citrus characterss that finishes equally crisp and clean, and reflecting whatt top-notch Semillon is all about. It retails at $50.

DVD JOY

Rated M // KATE REID Jennifer Lawrence takes on the lead role in ‘Joy’, a film based on the life of Joy Mangano, the inventor of the Miracle Mop. Joy has always done everything for her family. But when she decides to attempt to turn her passion for creation into a viable business she finds that there’s plenty of internal and external forces standing in her way. Ever determined to make it in the business world, Joy must deal with betrayal, treachery, heartbreak and her constantly changing list of allies and adversaries. Following her and her family across four generations the film delves into this wild story of family, loyalty and love, a theme

that’s common to director David O Russell’s previous films, which include ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ and ‘American Hustle’ – also starring Lawrence. ‘Joy’ is an emotional and humorous look at family life and the battles we face to make it to the top. Alongside Jennifer Lawrence is an all-star cast including Isabella Rossellini and ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ co-stars Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper. The film earned Jennifer Lawrence a Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical and an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. ‘Joy’ is now available on DVD, Bluray or download.

Radiohead

A Moon Shaped Pool // KATE REID Earlier this week alternative rock band Radiohead released their much anticipated ninth studio album ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’. It’s been almost five years since their last release ‘The King of Limbs’; a long wait for fans of a band who are no strangers to a ‘best album’ list. So far the reviews have been positive, suggesting nothing has changed for the band, well at least not in terms of critical adoration. Radiohead have always been one of those bands that writes albums not hits. ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’ follows this same formula. It’s cinematic, dreamlike, expansive and moody. It’s the type of music that’s best experienced with headphones on and 52 minutes to spare. Fans can pick up a digital copy now, while CD and vinyl collectors will need to wait till mid June for the album’s physical release. It’s good to see a band that’s been around for so long hasn’t lost the ability to connect with its audience.

The laughter and the sorority is back with the sequel to 2014’s ‘Bad Neighbours’. This time Mac (Seth Rogen) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) are selling their home and getting ready to welcome their second child.

Though they think they’re back to a quiet life in the suburbs they once again have to deal with the neighbours from hell when the sorority sisters of Kappa Kappa Nu move in next door. With loud parties keeping their young family awake, Mac and Kelly decide to enlist the help of their former enemy Teddy Sanders (Zac Efron). With their secret weapon now on board, the team devise a series of hilarious plans to get rid of the sorority once and for all.

Having reception problems? Need a new antenna? Can’t tune your TV? Need a TV wall mounted?

Joining the cast is Chloe Grace Moretz, leader of Kappa Kappa Nu and Selena Gomez as the leader of Phi Lambda Phi sorority. If you’re a fan of Seth Rogen’s brand of crude humour, or just love a good comedy flick, ‘Bad Neighbours 2’ is worth gathering a bunch of friends together and checking it out. ‘Bad Neighbours 2’ is currently screening at Hoyts Penrith. Taylor TV NEWS

Ê Good news for disgruntled EPL fans with Foxtel signing broadcast partnership agreements with six major English football clubs that will deliver subscribers dedicated new sports channels and programming featuring EPL games and exclusive behind the scenes content. From July 1, the official club television channels from top EPL teams Chelsea, Liverpool FC and Manchester United will broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week on Foxtel. Additionally, dedicated programming blocks from high profile teams Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur will join the Fox Sports line-up each week. The only downside to the arrangement is that all games will be delayed, with games played overnight Saturday night available to viewers from 1pm on Sundays. Ê 7Mate will screen a new New Zealand reality-doco series soon titled ‘Bogans’. Based in Hamilton, it follows selfconfessed bogans doing bogan-themed activities, such as car rallies, burnout sessions, tattoo conventions, medieval re-enactments and oddly themed beauty pageants. It premieres at 9.30pm on Monday, May 23.

THE PROJECT WEEKNIGHTS CHANNEL TEN

Ê I mentioned to you last month that the new ‘Sharknado 4’ will feature plenty of celebrity cameos. I can now reveal which celebs they’ll be: Stacey Dash (‘Clueless’), US ‘Shark Tank’ stars Robert Herjavec and Lori Greiner, David Faustino (‘Married with Children’), Cynthia Bailey (‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’), Motley Crue’s Vince Neil, singer Wayne Newton and former ‘Baywatch’ stars Gena Lee Nolin and Alexandra Paul. OK, so not overly huge stars but seriously you’re never going to get Johnny Depp to go face to face with a flying shark! ‘Sharknado: The 4th Awakens’ airs August 1. Ê Congratulations to ‘The Project’ host Waleed Aly for winning the Gold Logie at last Sunday’s ‘Logie Awards’. To think that Waleed has only been on TV as a regular for only 15 months is a huge testament to what’s he brought to our screens in such a short space of time. Who would have thought after some dismal ratings for its first few years that ‘The Project’ would now have two Gold Logie winners on their panel? All in all I thought it was a very successful and well produced event!

year’s Billboard Millennium Award.

Ê Still on music, and Foxtel Arts will screen ‘Sinatra 100: An All Star Grammy Concert’, marking 100 years since the birth of the legendary Frank Sinatra. The concert features outstanding performances by some of the world’s biggest names covering Sinatra’s classics. The line-up includes Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga, Celine Dion, Sam Smith, John Legend and Adam Levine. It airs Sunday, May 29 at 7.30pm. Ê Presto has commissioned Seven Productions to produce two more ‘Home and Away’ special events which will be available to stream later this year. The new specials will feature current and returning cast members with scripts currently in development. The specials will premiere later this year.

PENRITH’S MOST RESPECTED LINE-UP OF EXPERTS ARIES

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

You’re itching to jump out of cruise control as the fiery Full Moon encourages you to visualise your ambitious aspirations for the future. But [with Mars still stuck in retro mode] it’s not the week to act on them. You need to plan each step thoroughly, before you eventually take an amazing dream and spin it into rock-solid reality. And with Mercury reversing through your money zone [until May 22] you’d be wise to take stock of where you are going financially.

Joanne Madeline

Moore

HOROSCOPES

TAURUS

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

When you’re communicating with others, stay on topic and avoid pointless arguing. Friendships are favoured, as long as you give others the freedom to express their ideas. The more you support your peer group, the more love and assistance you’ll receive in return. If you are attached, things could get hot and heavy on Saturday night, when the Full Moon stimulates your intimacy zone. Single Bulls – don’t settle, have the confidence to wait for your soul mate.

GEMINI

MAY 22 TO JUNE 21

You can get so caught up in the busyness of daily life that you neglect those closest to you. This week’s Full Moon falls in your relationship zone, so aim to spend quality time with family and friends. But make sure you listen closely to what they have to say, otherwise you’ll end up with a misunderstanding on your hands. Remember Mercury is still retrograde [until next Sunday] which is frustrating, but it’s also the perfect time to research, rehearse, reboot, reschedule and revisit.

Mercury’s still reversing, so avoid posting anything online that’s confusing or controversial. With the Full Moon activating your job zone, chances are you’ll be working overtime this week. Pace yourself, otherwise you’ll suffer from a stomach upset or stress-related headache. Make a commitment to nurture your body with healthy food and regular exercise. You’ll find the combination of motivation and discipline will pay off.

LEO

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

Lions love to go at life with plenty of power and passion. But with Mercury, Mars and Saturn all in retro mode, the gas has temporarily been taken out of your tank. You want to charge ahead [especially at work] but your Cat style has been severely curtailed. So what can you do? You need to think more creatively. Heed the wise words of birthday great, Cher: “If you can’t go straight ahead, then go around the corner.” Saturday night’s Full Moon is all about love and laughter.

VIRGO

AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23

Mercury [your patron planet] is still retrograde, so avoid slipping into ‘VeryStressed Virgo Mode’! Try to worry less and focus more, as you complete one task at a time, before moving on to the next project. And have you been burning the midnight oil at work … and neglecting your nearest and dearest in the process? All work and no play make Virgos very difficult to live with, so the Full Moon urges you to re-establish family connections and nurture loved ones.

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

The Full Moon fires up your curiosity and wanderlust but it’s not a particularly good week to try to solve a major problem or travel, as the planets play games with your itinerary, scramble your communication antennae or muddle your mind. Conversing with others [in person and online] will be frustrating so focus on the facts. And don’t promise more than you can actually deliver. Sensible Librans will aim to get the balance right between being enthusiastic and realistic.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

Scorpios are usually astute moneymanagers. However, with Mars and Saturn both reversing through your $$$ zone, if you’re not careful your bank balance could take a backward step. Selfindulgence and impulse buys are also a potential problem. So it’s time to focus on your inner worth, boost your self-esteem, and avoid being too attached to material possessions and outer appearances. Let your true beauty shine!

SAGITTARIUS

NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21

Sagittarians thrive on adrenalin but, with Mars and Saturn both reversing through your sign, passion must be balanced with plenty of patience. Saturday night’s Sagittarian Full Moon magnifies your positive traits – and your negative ones. So strive to be generous and gregarious; rather than bossy and belligerent! Also, aim to get the ratio right between personal projects and partnerships. Pooling individual ideas could lead to an exciting joint venture or group activity.

LIFE & STYLE

CAPRICORN

DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20

When it comes to a child, friend or cherished dream, it may feel as if it’s one step forwards and two steps back. Don’t lose heart Capricorn. Relationships will slowly improve [and dreams will gradually manifest] if you are patient and give them a chance. Lift your nose from the work grindstone on the weekend and take a look within. It’s the perfect time for some quiet contemplation, as you communicate with [and receive wise guidance from] your inner self.

AQUARIUS

JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19

Many Aquarians are feeling frustrated and are keen to break free from rules and restrictions, especially within a group situation. But, if you really want to enjoy the long-term rewards, then you’ll have to play by the short-term rules. Plus, when it comes to your hopes, dreams and goals, there is absolutely no substitute for thorough preparation. So your motto for the moment is from birthday great Malcolm X: “The future belongs to those who prepare for it today”.

PISCES

FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20

Are you bored to bits with your current job? Be careful what you wish for Fish. With the Full Moon in your career zone make sure you’re not heading off in a totally unsuitable direction – or even going backwards! Relating to others will also be tricky, as Mercury continues to reverse through your communication zone. So strive to be extra diplomatic with those around you. Singles – you could find love via social media or a dating site.

Reid NUTRITION

When I say tofu what do you think of? Hippies? Vegetarians? A boring looking block of soybean that couldn’t possibly taste good? It’s clear from the numerous stereotypes that tofu has a bit of an image problem. And I get why, I really do. Unprepared tofu may look about as appetising as cardboard, but underneath the exterior is a nutritious, delicious and often misunderstood food. Tofu’s biggest strengths – besides the fact that it’s a great source of protein, calcium and iron – is that it’s hugely versatile and has

Is it time to give tofu one more chance? Kate Reid is a journalist and university qualified Nutritionist with a Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) degree from the University of Wollongong. kate.reid@ westernweekender. com.au @kate_reid6

a mild unoffensive flavour, making it the perfect vehicle for your favourite herbs, spices and marinades. But this may also be the reason why tofu gets such a bad rap. For example, I don’t like silken (soft) tofu, it’s a bit too mushy for my liking, but I absolutely love firm tofu. If I’d given up after my first, not so great, experience with silken tofu I would have forever

been a tofu hater. Tofu’s varied textures are due to changes in water content. The highest water content can be found in silken tofu, followed by soft tofu, medium, firm and extra firm tofu. Silken and soft tofu is best used in desserts, sauces or as an egg substitute, while firmer varieties hold their shape better and are perfect for grilling, stir frying or deep frying. If you’re willing to give tofu a second (or first) chance my advice would be to pick a texture that appeals to you most. If you’re not sure, firm tofu is probably the best starting point. If you’re using water-packed firm tofu make sure you gently press the water out so you don’t end up with a soggy mess. Now you can add your favourite flavours, think garlic, soy, or chilli. If you’re not super confident with marinades it might be best to start with a pre-prepared tofu like the Soyco range which comes in Thai, Japanese, Malaysian and Chinese flavours. Start by adding small amounts of tofu into dishes like stir fries, soups, sushi or salads alongside meat and if you enjoy the taste you can move to more meat free dishes.

Following the RBA’s meeting on May 3, we at BOQ were pleased to announce that we’re passing on the full 25 basis point rate cut to our variable rate home loan customers. CEO and Managing Director, Jon Sutton said the decision to cut rates came after careful consideration of a range of factors, including BOQ’s position in a very competitive market. “Any move in interest rates is not a decision we make lightly. In early April, driven by ongoing volatility in the funding market, we made the

decision to increase our variable interest rates for home loans. In an environment where our cost of funding is increasing, we need to ensure we balance the interests of both our customers and shareholders,” he said. At BOQ we’re close to our customers and we’re extremely conscious of the im-

pact interest rate moves have on them. While the funding market remains volatile, we reduced our variable rates in step with the RBA this week to ensure we maintain the right balance while continuing to deliver value for our customers. With a new carded rate of just 4.47 per cent BOQ’s lead product Clear Path will remain one of the most competitively priced variable mortgages for owner occupiers on the market. At BOQ we believe in transparency and making the home loan process as clear and simple as possible. The Clear Path Home Loan is a competitive rate with no introductory period, the option to have an offset account and full redraw from your loan, all with minimal fees that are clearly communicated up front. With recent rate changes individual customer circumstances may differ. So if you do have any questions regarding these decisions, contact your local branch manager who will be happy to discuss your personal circumstances.

RELIGION

What is wrong with the world around us?

www.glenmorepark anglican.com.au and on Facebook

“Dear Sir: Regarding your article ‘What’s wrong with the world?’ I am. Yours truly, G.K. Chesterton”. Chesterton was a Christian who knew the truth of the Bible which says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. Sin, our act of rebellion against the God who made us, has dramatic consequences, creating chaos and havoc, not only in our world but also in our lives. The amazing thing is that God in his goodness, rather than push the delete button and start again, sent Jesus into our world so that anyone who would look to him in confident faith and trust could be part of the new creation Jesus is building as he draws people to himself. Don’t stay disappointed and frustrated with the world, come to Jesus and be part of something new!

thought of doing. Why is the world like this? Why are people like this? Why are you like this? In 1907, the London Times newspaper invited a number of distinguished thinkers to contribute their thoughts on the question, “What’s wrong with the world?” A brief contribution was returned by one of the most celebrated writers of that day,

PET HEALTH

Have you ever wondered why your dog destructively chews? This is one of the most common problems in dogs. Dogs will often become destructive when they are bored, don’t have enough toys or have no way to release their energy. It is important that you select the right toys that are appealing to your dog. Find textures and scents that are appealing to maintain interest. Play toys should be big enough that they cannot be swallowed and are not harmful or toxic if broken

apart and swallowed. Choose toys that maintain your dog’s interest for as long as possible; toys that can be coated or stuffed with food are often great as they will keep animals entertained and they self reward when the food is released! Animals love to explore and you can encourage exploratory play by hiding food throughout the environment.

It is also important that you engage in regular activities with your dog to provide social, physical and mental enrichment. Dogs also thrive on routine and will generally look forward to their daily walk, run or ball/frisbee game. High energy dogs and working breeds may need more strenuous exercise to keep them interested; this may involve exercise such as flyball, agility training or swimming. Tug games can also be fun and will allow your dog to burn lots of energy. It is important that toys are durable and designed for tugging games. Train your dog to release the toy by offering more desirable treats or another toy as a reward during play. Be sure that your pet shows no signs of aggression when playing tug games. Even if your dog has sufficient exercise, play and toys, it may still explore and chew household items. Make sure that desirable objects such as shoes and socks are kept away from dogs when they are unsupervised. If you catch your dog chewing on something inappropriate, make a gentle sound to distract your dog and give it an alternative toy to chew on; this rewards your dog for releasing the inappropriate item.

oyota’s sales of new motor vehicles surged more than eight per cent in Australia last month on the back of robust growth by HiLux and LandCruiser. A market-leading tally of 16,567 vehicles in April 2016 for Toyota was more than 1,200 sales or almost 8.3 per cent ahead of its result from the same month last year. The company and its dealers sold a daily average of more than 550 vehicles last month; no other brand reached 300 deliveries a day. Toyota Australia’s Executive Director Sales and Marketing, Tony Cramb, said the April result beat its nearest rival by more than 7,900 vehicles or 91.7 per cent, lifting market share to 18.9 per cent. “The strength of Toyota’s sales performance is remarkable, particularly given the intense competition and aggressive deals we are seeing in the market,” he said. “Toyota is reaping the benefits of substantial improvements to our range over the past 12 to 18 months as well as continual advances that ensure owners and prospects are treated as valued guests of the Toyota family.” HiLux expanded its leadership of the ute market with 3,384 sales last month, representing an April-on-April gain of more than 21 per cent, while sales of the ever-popular LandCruiser 200 Series soared more than 77 per cent.

Giants on fire as ‘Mummy’ re-signs Ruckman Shane Mumford will be a GWS Giant for life after signing a new deal NATHAN TAYLOR

e’s one of Greater Western Sydney’s biggest ever recruits, and now ruckman Shane Mumford will finish his career as a Giant. Currently in his third season at the club, the 29-year-old will remain in western Sydney after signing a new two year deal. Since crossing over from the Sydney Swans in 2013, Mumford has been one of the AFL’s most dominant ruckman and he’s largely been responsible for turning the fortunes of the Giants around.

H

Mumford said he’s seen the Giants’ playing group develop significantly since arriving at the club. “When I first got here, you walk into the change rooms and it’s full of young kids with no facial hair and small tiny little bodies,” he said. “It’s definitely changed a lot, not only with these older guys we’ve picked up but these young guys have turned into men now. “The sky is the limit with this group. It’s all about how hard we are willing to work and that’ll see us build towards something very special.”

Giants General Manager of Football Wayne Campbell said Mumford’s re-signing was significant for the club. “Shane has led from the front since joining the Giants and we’re delighted he’s recommitted to the club,” he said. “His experience and leadership both on and off the field has been crucial in fasttracking the development of our young list.” Giants coach Leon Cameron welcomed Mumford’s contract extension. “Shane has committed himself fully to the Giants since joining us and we’re thrilled he’s re-committed,” he said.

Meanwhile, the GWS Giants are marching up the AFL ladder in a big way following their fourth straight victory last weekend. GWS’ recent scalp came last Saturday against the Fremantle Dockers where they recorded their first win in Perth. The Giants broke their duck out west after going winless in their previous six attempts, prevailing 95-77. The recently re-signed Mumford was exceptional in the ruck with 42 hit-outs. GWS now sit in fifth place and will take on the Gold Coast Suns this Saturday afternoon at Spotless Stadium.

Celebration amongst the heartbreak Players honoured for stellar season as Wanderers announce major changes to 2016/17 squad NATHAN TAYLOR

t Marys junior Mark Bridge has brushed away the disappointment of losing his third Grand Final to become the first player in Western Sydney Wanderers history to win the club’s Player of the Year Award twice. Bridge first received the coveted Wanderers Medal in the club’s inaugural season, and last week doubled his medal tally following a year which saw him in career-best from – scoring nine goals and providing eight assists. In a season that saw the Wanderers go from second last in 2015 to runners-up in 2016, Bridge was a constant threat to opposition defences in his 23 games which included a career-best five match scoring streak. Wanderers winger Erica Holloway also completed an impressive individual season as she claimed the W-League Player of the Year in her rookie season. Despite being an ever-present figure in the NPL, the Penrith firefighter had to wait until this season for her first chance in the W-League and she took it with both hands as one of the Wander Women’s danger players out wide.

Brendon Santalab, Mark Bridge and Mitch Nichols with their awards last week Goalscoring machine Mitch Nichols claimed a double as both media representatives and Wanderers members voted to award him the Rod Allen Award: Media Player of the Year and Members’ Player of the Year. Tennis legend to share his knowledge Wally Masur to run his eye over local talent at new-look Woodriff Gardens Tennis Centre next week In 2015 Masur was appointed captain of Australia’s Davis Cup team before being succeeded by the recently retired Lleyton Hewitt earlier this year. Nepean District Tennis Association CEO, Chris Woodland, said he was thrilled to have Masur on site as part of the official opening weekend. “Wally has been a big supporter of Nepean Tennis over the years, and has kept himself involved in bringing this project to completion,” he said. “It will be fantastic to have him here again for this great occasion.” Recent upgrades to the site have seen a substantial investment from Penrith Council, Tennis Australia and the NSW Government. Free coaching sessions will be conducted under the eye of Wally Masur next Saturday, May 21 at Woodriff Gardens from 1pm to 3pm. The local community are invited to take part, and lessons are open for children of any standard or experience aged three years and over. A delicious free sausage sizzle will be on hand along with plenty of fun games and giveaways. Bookings are essential by phoning the NDTA office on 4721 2880.

ustralian tennis great Wally Masur will be in town next weekend to check out Penrith’s newest tennis facility as well as run his eye over some exceptional local talent. The 52-year-old former Davis Cup captain will visit the new and improved Woodriff Gardens Tennis Centre next Saturday, May 21 to participate in Hot Shots coaching programs and talent identification sessions for local juniors. “Everyone in tennis is excited to see these fantastic upgrades to the Penrith venue,” Masur said. “International standard courts are sure to bring elite level events to the city as well as provide a large boost to junior player development.” Masur started playing tennis at the tender age of eight and went on to have an illustrious career both in singles and doubles. In 1987 he reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and also reached the semi-finals of the US Open in 1993. Masur won three singles titles and 16 doubles titles. He peaked at number 15 in the world in the early 1990s.

eenager Brad Shaylor will travel to one of the most dangerous countries on the planet later this month in a quest to become a world champion. While Colombia is infamous for any array of things that you’ll find in the ‘Safety and Security’ chapter of a Lonely Planet book, it’ll also be the location for the upcoming 2016 BMX World Championships which gets underway on May 25. The Year 10 Xavier College student qualified for the prestigious competition after being crowned Australian champion at the BMX National Championships in March. Brad took out the U15 national title, and will now travel to the other side of the globe to bring back the international equivalent. Speaking with the Weekender, the

Cranebrook resident said he was primed and ready for the biggest race of his young life. “I’m stoked to make the team. I’ve been training day in, day out, for this exact opportunity to race overseas, so it’s really been a successful year to be able to do that,” he said. “The track in Colombia is at a really high altitude, so fitness is obviously a big key. “I just can’t wait to go to another country, race against new people and just be a part of the Australian team.” Brad trains at the LMX BMX Club in Cranebrook under the tutelage of 12time national champion and Beijing Olympian Luke Madill. Madill said his young protégé has worked extremely hard in the leadup to the Colombia trip. “Brad’s strength is already there, I’ve just been trying to help him refine his technique and his race tactics,” he said.
