A
police standoff with detainees at the Cobham Juvenile Justice Centre ended with a splash on Tuesday after a rebelling youth jumped off a barbed wire fence into the facility’s swimming pool. Three male detainees, aged 17, 17 and 15 began rioting just after 12.30pm, gaining access to the roof of the building at Werrington after smashing a classroom window. Officers from Nepean Police Area Command were called to the facility with firefighters, the riot squad, paramedics and PolAir also in attendance.
The three youths were seen on the roof of the facility with their shirts off, dancing, throwing a ball and smashing windows and air conditioning units. They continued this for about 60 minutes as authorities looked on before two of the boys climbed down and were immediately detained. The third youth climbed along a fence surrounded by barbed wire before leaping off into a swimming pool below. He was lifted from the pool by police, handcuffed and escorted inside the centre. Investigations are continuing into the circumstances surrounding the incident, with the three boys involved facing further action.

ince our last edition was published around a month ago, we have watched our nation become gripped by a bushfire crisis – shock and devastation far and wide and images that will haunt us forever. We’ve also seen an incredible, almost unprecedented response from the Australian community, which has been the shining light of this tragedy. But much of the conversation during the bushfire emergency has been about politics, and about one man in particular. It’s safe to say the honeymoon is over for Prime Minister Scott Morrison. All of the drama started with the Morrison family’s holiday to Hawaii before Christmas. I still don’t have any major drama with the fact that the Prime Minister was away – I understand the optics, but at the time the State Government and the Rural Fire Service were handling the situation well, and any involvement from Morrison would have been nothing more than an annoyance. I’m far from convinced that those who have been so critical of Morrison for taking his trip to Hawaii would have been any happier with the PM if he was on the ground. The criticism would have shifted, but still existed. It is when Morrison returned from holidays, and when the Federal Government started to have some involvement in the crisis response, that things really went bad for ‘the miracle man’. While some of the criticism of Morrison these past few weeks has been unfair, there is no doubt the situation has exposed serious questions over his leadership credentials.

Everywhere he turned, drama followed. Forced handshakes, weird press conferences, awkward encounters with locals, a highly inappropriate PR video at the height of the crisis... the list of problems grew and grew by the day. Perhaps the worst encounter came on Kangaroo Island, when Morrison appeared to be unaware that two people had died, and then tried to claim he was talking about firefighters, not residents. What Prime Minister visits a disaster zone and isn’t fully across the fact that people had lost their lives? It was a telling moment. Morrison is in trouble, as the latest polls confirmed earlier this week. He risks forever being remembered as the Prime Minister who was on the beach while Australia burned, and for his below par handling of the crisis once he was home. It is something he may never recover from. History will show that the Federal Government’s response to the bushfire crisis was actually very decent, and in some cases unprecedented.

But the disaster became about Morrison, and individuals don’t necessarily recover in history’s eyes as well as governments themselves. That’s not to suggest there will be any sudden moves against Morrison. Despite the howls of protests and the diatribe being vomited on Twitter, we’re not about to have a leadership spill. It will however put Morrison on the back foot, and whatever plan he had over the next two and a half years leading into the next Federal Election will need to be dramatically altered. He will spend a bulk of that time trying to win back the Australian public. This week, he started that process by hinting that he’d support a Royal Commission into the bushfire crisis. It is proof that Morrison is still in PR mode. He knows those are big words, often applauded by the various sectors involved and the community, but he also knows it allows him to deflect, and answer tough questions with, “these are matters for the Royal Commission�. Surely between the State and Federal Governments, the RFS, Fire and Rescue NSW and all the relevant agencies, we know what needs to be done. We don’t need a Royal Commission to tell us what we already know. What we do need is some serious balance moving forward. Unfortunately, we’ve lost that in the midst of this crisis. Suggestions that climate change was solely responsible for the bushfires is as ludicrous as suggestions it played no part at all. Unfortunately, there seems to be a lack of sensible middle here. Once the emotion settles, hopefully we can find a measured long-term response.

between February and March for the first time in two decades. “This will be the first time District Court matters have been heard in Katoomba since the 1990s,” the Department of Communities and Justice spokesman said. Under the circuit sitting arrangement, judges will be rostered from Sydney.
“There will be multiple cases heard in each sitting block including trials, sentences and appeals,” he said. “The purpose of the District Court sittings in Katoomba is to reduce the pending trial case load in the region, specifically from the Penrith District Court, without impacting Local Court sittings.”

crack has appeared at Penrith Courthouse prompting the closure of one of its courtrooms. Courtroom 4 has been boarded up after a crack appeared in a wall in the lead up to the Christmas break. The closure means the already busy courthouse will be reduced to just four courtrooms – two each for the Local and District courts. The Department of Communities and Justice said the courtroom is expected to resume operating in early February. “It is currently closed to enable repairs to a crack in a wall which appeared prior to Christmas,” a spokesman said. “There will be no disruptions to Local Court sittings at Penrith during this period.” When asked if the Department planned to expand and future- proof the courthouse given Penrith’s population boom, it would not be drawn, only providing a background of prior upgrades. “More than $7 million has been invested in renovations to Penrith Courthouse in the 21st Century,” it said. “There have been improvements to security and disability access, a new regis-

Inspiring response in our Penrith’s community spirit shines as locals come together to help those affected NICOLA BARTON

he community has come together following what has been a devastating fire season across the country, as local fundraising initiatives showcase true Aussie mateship. NSW SES Penrith Unit volunteer, Sally Suckling is one of many who organised drives in the region. Having volunteered since she was eightyears-old for a range of organisations, she has been involved in multiple bushfire events over her lifetime. “This time around I could really see people wanted to help but they weren’t donating the things that were required and were inundating stations with items that they didn’t need,” she said. “It was great to see so many wanting to help but they just needed someone to help organise the logistics around that.” Ms Suckling started a Facebook group, which initially involved providing hampers, Coles gift cards or even mowing people’s lawns to ensure volunteers’ families at home had the support they needed. “Volunteers are very proud people and they will do whatever they can regardless of what effects this has on themselves and their families,” Ms Suckling said.

hat’s in a name? For the Llandilo Rural Fire Service and a town on the other side of the world, it is something that holds a great connection. A heartwarming gesture has been put forward by the people of Llandeilo in South Wales, to which the Llandilo community is named after, as they pledge to support local volunteer firefighters into the future. Formerly known as Terry Brook, the Llandilo name was granted around the 1860’s, derived from the Welsh town of Llandeilo Fawr, which was previously spelt ‘Llandilo’. Despite the two towns being on oppo-
site sides of the world, they have held a strong connection over the years. Llandilo Brigade Captain, Rick Burns thanked the people of Llandeilo for their messages of support. “We really appreciate your wonderful gesture of mateship, which has lifted our spirits in what has been a long and unprecedented fire season,” he said. “It is in times of adversity where people of good will come together, and to receive this good will from our sisters and brothers on the other side of the world is truly amazing.” Captain Burns extended his thanks to the local community and businesses for their generous support. “The members of Llandilo RFS cannot thank you all enough, you represent the best of humanity,” he said.

Those wishing to help out can join the the ‘Western Sydney Help a Fire Volunteer’ Facebook group. Ms Suckling was also involved in helping Mogo Zoo with former Lindsay MP, Emma Husar. After the first fire front came through, the zoo was impacted but the animals were thankfully saved. As a second fire front was approaching, fear was running high as they were stranded without water or fire extinguishers to defend themselves. Within the next seven hours, Ms Suckling and Ms Husar organised for 120 fire extinguishers, 100 fire blankets as well as water and other items to be sent to the zoo. Ms Husar also started a GoFundMe campaign for the zoo that has garnered over $90,000. Lindsay MP, Melissa McIntosh has also started the Community Care Kit collection drive in partnership with Hawkesbury City Councillor Sarah Richards and the Mountains Combined Chambers and Community’s Jo Bromilow. “We have been very fortunate so far this
fire season, and we want to help our fellow Australians,” Ms McIntosh said. Three kits are being packed at Ms McIntosh’s office over the coming weeks including home kits, school kits and firies energy snack kits. For people who would like to make a donation, a list of items for the kits is available online on Facebook at Melissa McIntosh MP or from Ms McIntosh’s office on 4722 0600. Items can be dropped off at Ms McIntosh’s office at 331 High Street. A number of fundraising events have taken off around the community including a huge effort from the Penrith Panthers at their open training session last Saturday. This included fundraising games, signing sessions, rides and a barbeque. The amount raised is set to be announced later this month. Other upcoming events include a charity lunch to be held today (Friday, January 17) at the Jamison Hotel, organised by Our Community Cares. The Penrith Paceway is also hosting an Aussie Themed Charity Night event on Saturday, January 25 from 6pm-9pm. A host of other local businesses ran fundraisers, or offered support to those fighting the fires, including OnePointHealth which held free appointments for Rural Fire Service volunteers.

Many residents have questioned the need for a development of this size, while others have expressed concerns about the further drain on local infrastructure and water supplies, both of which are currently lacking. But documents attached to the application describe Penrith as Sydney’s ‘Growth City’ and allude to a vastly different CBD skyline in the future. “[The proposal aims to] deliver a high-quality development that will make a positive contribution to the emerging city skyline within the Penrith City Centre,” it states. The western end of High Street is already set to be transformed, with two towers offering up to 187 apartments approved late last year as part of the ‘Penway Place’ project, which neighbours this development. Upgrades to Castlereagh Road and Mulgoa Road are also continuing, to help alleviate traffic problems across Penrith, particularly in the CBD.

lans for a 46 - storey skyscraper on High Street, Penrith will go ahead despite the development application (DA) being rejected last month. Urban Property Group, the company behind the massive project, told the Weekender on Tuesday the DA had been rejected due to an issue with lodgement. “The lodgement was missing a document and will be resubmitted hopefully next week,” the spokesman said. Expected to cost $110.5 million to build, the soaring part seven, part 46- storey tower is proposed for vacant land at 614-632 High Street, opposite the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre. If approved, the development will feature 318 residential units, 1500sqm of commercial and retail space and 348 parking spaces over five levels.
Penrith City Council explained the reason behind the ‘rejected application’ status, which was given to the DA mere weeks after it was first submitted on November 29. “The received application did not comprise the required documentation, therefore it was rejected,” a spokesman said. “A rejection differs from a determination as it is not a decision on the application and has the effect of the application having not been made. “The proponent can lodge a new DA for the same or a modified proposal.” The site, which has frontages to High Street and Union Lane, has been subject to previous development consents over many years but have all lapsed, Council told the Weekender last month. The DA will not be determined by Council, however, with the Sydney Western Planning Panel having the final say given its capital investment value exceeds $30 million.

local environmental activist has raised concerns for a mob of kangaroos in Werrington, whose habitat is subject to extensive development. The majority of the site, situated off Chapman Street between the Great Western Highway and the Western Rail Line at Werrington, is owned by Western Sydney University and partially by Lendlease. The land is well known for its longstanding kangaroo population. With big plans in sight for the university’s Business Park as well as Lendlease’s plans for a major housing development, a petition has garnered some attention, calling for a definite management plan for the animals occupying the land. Blacktown & District Environment Group’s Flora and Fauna Manager Wayne Olling, who started the petition, said it is important environmental sensitivity is upheld during any developments. “You can’t just herd them into a truck and move them away, if they can’t survive there they will have to euthanise them, as from my experience kangaroos can’t be relocated, they get too stressed and they can’t be put onto a vehicle to relocate,” he said.
Kangaroos roam on land at Werrington, which is set to be developed in coming years. An ecology report of the land now owned by Lendlease, formerly by Universal Property Group, was undertaken back in 2014 but does not report the existence of kangaroos on the site. While plans for this development are still seeking approvals, Mr Olling is concerned they are relying on an insufficient report. Western Sydney University said its development on the land will ensure the flora and fauna are accounted for. “Western Sydney University recognises the kangaroo population of the
Werrington campus as a valued part of the local urban ecology, and will be working with NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) to develop a long-term strategic plan to assist in the management of the kangaroos,” a Western Sydney University spokesperson said this week. “To inform this strategic plan, the university has formed an Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee and has also engaged researchers from its School of Science to conduct a study of the

Photo: Megan Dunn. kangaroos at Werrington and determine their numbers and movements.” The NSW legislative planning and approval processes for the university’s development will take a number of years, with the planned redevelopment occurring in multiple stages over a 20 year timeframe. With about 30 kangaroos currently inhabiting the site, Mr Olling said the public need a definitive answer of how these animals will be catered for in the years to come.

cemetery at Wallacia Golf Club is back on the drawing board. Less than six months after its initial development application (DA) for a $24 million memorial park was snuffed out by the Greater Sydney Commission, sparking major celebrations from locals, the Catholic Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust has taken a second bite at the cherry. The $25 million amended DA, lodged
with Penrith City Council last month, would see the golf course reconfigured into nine holes, making way for 27,000 burial plots, a chapel plus administration building. Additions and alterations would also be undertaken to the existing Wallacia Golf Club. The original plans involved creating 60,000 burial plots over the next 50 years. Plans for a cemetery on the site have been strongly opposed by locals for years, with Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies also taking up the fight.

Tradie who stole drills from Bunnings cops hit to wallet
A tradie who stole a number of drills from Bunnings has been stung with a hefty fine and ordered to pay compensation. Wearing a bright blue checkered suit, Ryan James Lever appeared before Penrith Local Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to ‘larceny’. The court heard Lever entered Bunnings South Penrith on November 11 last year and proceeded to stuff three AEG drills down his pants before leaving the store without paying. He and a co-accused were busted on CCTV, and when spoken to by police Lever made full admissions to pawning the goods for cash. During his sentencing on Monday, Lever, a roof plumber by trade, told the court he had “chewed through all his savings” after he was unable to work for three months following surgery. “The only reason I done what I done on that day... I couldn’t pay my rent and I did that and I’m sincerely sorry and very embarrassed about that matter and it won’t happen again,” he said, adding he had since returned to work. Magistrate Geoff Hiatt noted it wasn’t his first shoplifting offence, and said his need for cash was “absolutely no excuse” to take the goods. “You could have sought assistance through other government organisations,” he said. He was handed a 12-month good behaviour bond, fined $1,000 and ordered to repay the warehouse giant $977.
Woman pleads guilty to drink driving with child in vehicle
Shannon Tienstra has a nervous wait after pleading guilty to high-range drink driving with a child in the car. Tienstra was not in attendance at Penrith Local Court on Monday when her lawyer’s agent entered the plea on her behalf.
Magistrate Geoff Hiatt allowed a lengthy adjournment to enable the defence to obtain subjective material to be tendered on sentence. Tienstra is due to be sentenced on February 24.
Man unsure of who was driving his car during robbery incident
A man whose car was used for criminal purposes has been convicted of failing to disclose the identity of the driver. David William Simpson was fined $250 after claiming he did not know who was driving his car at the time. Penrith Local Court heard on Monday, Simpson’s car was captured on CCTV as unknown passengers attempted to steal TVs. His lawyer submitted Simpson had been very unwell at the time and “he simply did not know who took his car”. “He is apologetic he is not able to help the police further,” he said.
Woman to seek legal advice on drug possession charges
Tegan Carter will seek legal advice after being charged with drug possession. Carter fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with possessing synthetic cocaine at Cranebrook on November 3, but told Magistrate Geoff Hiatt she was unaware how it got there. Magistrate Hiatt adjourned the matter to enable her to obtain legal advice, given she could potentially have a defence. She is due back at court on February 11.
Arrest warrant issued after man fails to front court
A magistrate has issued an arrest warrant for Dale Edward Pearson after he failed to turn up to court. Pearson is charged with high-range drink driving – his third high-range offence on his record, Penrith Local Court heard on Monday. He was convicted and fined $600 in his absence for being an unaccompanied
learner and disqualified for three months. Pearson will be arrested and brought to court to face his latest drink driving charge.
Man ordered off the roads after causing crash
A driver under the influence of drugs who ran up the back of a stationary car has been stripped of his licence for six months. Paul Michael Reardon fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with driving under the influence of drugs and negligent driving. Reardon told the court he had taken Valium as he had been having trouble sleeping. Magistrate Geoff Hiatt was scathing, telling Reardon he posed a “significant risk to other members of the public”. “You shouldn’t have been on the road that day,” he said. He was convicted, fined $800 for driving under the influence and $500 for negligent driving.
Man fails to attend court; judge orders his arrest
An arrest warrant has been issued for Timothy Gil after he failed to show up to court. Gil is facing multiple counts of shoplifting and one count of ‘goods in custody’. Magistrate Geoff Hiatt ordered an arrest warrant to secure his attendance at court.
Man avoids conviction thanks to good prior record
A man fronted Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with attempting to stalk and intimidate on November 17 at St Marys. His lawyer told the court his client’s future ambitions and goals may be “hampered” if a criminal conviction was recorded against his name. The court heard the man, who was born in 2000, had no prior criminal history and had not participated in the physical
altercation of the victim. Magistrate Geoff Hiatt found in the offender’s favour, granting him an opportunity to demonstrate not only to the court but to the wider community that his offending was only an “aberration”. He was handed a 12-month good behaviour bond without conviction.
Man convicted after pawning stolen hedge trimmer
A man who purchased a hedge trimmer suspected of being stolen before onselling it for a profit has been told to think twice the next time he is offered cheap goods. Barry Stacy faced Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with goods in custody suspected of being stolen. The court heard Stacy had purchased the hedge trimmer from a man at a cafe in St Marys for $50 before pawning it for $100. He claimed he “had to do it” because he needed the money and had recently had brain surgery and “can’t work”. He was convicted and fined $200.
Another chance for man caught with drugs
A man has escaped a criminal conviction after being caught with a small quantity of cannabis. His lawyer argued police could have given his client a cannabis warning rather than charge him, given the drug was allegedly the size of a “peanut M&M” and cost just $10 to purchase. Magistrate Geoff Hiatt extended him leniency but warned the man, who is subject to several good behaviour bonds, if he came back before the court again he risked being breached. “You need to stay out of trouble,” he warned. Oxley Park: Chase initiated after man fails to stop vehicle
An 18-year-old St Marys man who holds a NSW learners permit was caught driving unaccompanied on Tuesday, January 7. About 2pm police were patrolling Durham Street, Oxley Park when their automatic number plate recognition system flagged a vehicle as being unregistered. Police attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver performed a U-turn and accelerated away. A pursuit was initiated. A short time later the vehicle stopped and the driver ran on foot. Police pursued him and he was located a short time later on Carpenter Street, Colyton. The man was arrested and conveyed to Penrith Police station. Checks were made revealing he only held a NSW learners permit. He was issued infringements for registration, speed and traffic offences and was charged with ‘not stop vehicle when directed to do so’ and ‘learner not accompanied by driver/police officer/tester’. He is to appear in Penrith Local Court on Wednesday, February 5.
North St Marys: Drunk driver had never obtained licence
A man who has never held a licence has been charged after he was caught driving whilst intoxicated. About 12.45am on Saturday, January 11 a 28-year-old St Marys man was stopped on Oleander Road, North St Marys for the purpose of a random breath test. The test returned positive and he was conveyed to Penrith Police Station for further breath analysis, to which he returned a positive reading of 0.140. It is alleged the man did not hold a NSW licence, but had been in the country sufficient time to obtain one. He was charged with driving with middle range PCA and ‘driver never licensed’ to appear in Penrith Local Court earlier this week.
Jamisontown: Man busted stealing from hardware store
A 68-year-old Wallacia man is facing charges after he was allegedly caught stealing from a Jamisontown hardware store earlier this week. About 3.30pm on Monday, January 13 it is alleged the man selected numerous items from the shelves and placed them in a cardboard box he was carrying. Nearby staff alerted the manager. Police who were at the location for an unrelated matter spoke with the manager and escorted the man to the store’s office. It is alleged the man was asked if he had anything further on him that was stolen, and he removed an item from his pocket. He was arrested and charged with shoplifting to a value less than $2000. He is to appear at Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, March 3.
Penrith: Woman to face court on string of serious charges
A woman has been charged for a string of offences involving prohibited drugs, goods in custody and outstanding warrants. About 8pm on Saturday, January 11 police were patrolling Riley Street, Penrith when they sighted a motor vehicle in a car park near the location with its hazard lights flashing. As police approached the vehicle they discovered two persons slumped over each other on the back seat and attempted to wake them. It is alleged that both were extremely affected by drugs. Police conducted a search of the woman’s bag which contained drugs, a knife and various cards in a female’s name. Further inquiries revealed that the identification was stolen. After hospital treatment, she was taken to Penrith Police Station where she was charged with ‘possess prohibited drug (x2)’, ‘custody of knife in public place’, outstanding warrants and ‘goods in personal custody suspected being stolen’. She will face court next month.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE POPULAR RESTAURANT CLOSES Popular Italian restaurant Trevi, which operated in Penrith for 14 years, announced its surprise closure over the summer holidays. A massive closing weekend was held just before Christmas, where the restaurant’s long run in Penrith was celebrated. There was an emotional response on social media, with many loyal customers saddened by the closure of the restaurant, which also had a popular cocktail bar. Trevi closed for the final time on Saturday, December 21. While there’s no official confirmation of what will take over the site, there’s plenty of rumours doing the rounds, including talk of a new bar opening within months.
PETstock Penrith will play host to its local animal rescue organisation as part of National Pet Adoption Day, an initiative of PETstock’s charity PETstock Assist with support from event partner PetRescue. The past five Adoption Days have found homes for nearly 3,000 animals across Australia, and this year PETstock Assist is aiming to find forever homes for another 1,000 rescue pets across its 145 stores. Olympian, television personality and animal rescue advocate Giaan Rooney (pictured) is supporting the initiative this year, encouraging Australians to adopt not shop for pets. Giaan, who grew up raising rescues, is urging Australians to adopt different in 2020; to adopt a new way of thinking when it comes to animal adoption and consider a pet they haven’t before. “It was love at first sight with my most recent rescue, Lester,” she said. “Despite being one leg short, Lester was the perfect dog: obedient, easy to train, loving and grateful. He gave me so much and wanted so little in return. His passing last year still makes me tear up today.” The day will take place on Saturday, February 15.
THE VILLAGE PLANS RE-BUILD AFTER FIRE DAMAGED EATERY Plans have been lodged to restore The Village restaurant after the heritage building was engulfed by fire. Previously known as King Henry’s Court, the popular eatery has been closed since mid-October after a fire tore through the rear of the building and spread to the roof. Restoration works are tipped to cost $837,000 and include demolishing and reconstructing brick walls and reconstructing roof structures. All other brick work and
masonry features must be retained and protected, documents attached to the development application show. It is believed gas cylinders at the rear of the building outside the

The findings, uncovered by Specsavers optometrists, revealed that children in New South Wales spend an average of 2.6 hours on screens each day, with 14 per cent, equivalent to 2,233 children in the Penrith area, spending more than four hours. The most common place for children to be on their devices was on the lounge or in their bedroom. Mr Kazzi said the research project aims to highlight the damages overexposure to screens can have on a child’s ongoing eye health. “It’s no surprise that 91 per cent of New South Wales parents say digital screen time is top of the list for their children’s health concerns,” he said. “What is surprising for many is that when it comes to eye health, the biggest problem with screen time has nothing to do with the actual screens.
Experts say kids are spending too much time looking at screens.
“It’s simply the fact that normally when kids are on screens like phones and computers, there is a lot of near vision work that is often indoors without natural light. That’s the part that’s bad for your eyes. “So other near vision, inside work like homework and reading can have a similar negative effects on the eye.” According to the data, 61 per cent of parents are concerned that their child’s current level of screen time is bad for their health, with 75 per cent believing it is bad for their eyes and 74 per cent thinking it may impact their social skills. Whilst parents acknowledged their concerns, many said they were unsure of how to tackle the problem, especially in a world where technology is becoming more and more the norm. “Staring at screens and being indoors for extended periods of time can increase the risk of myopia or becoming short-sighted,” Mr Kazzi said. “This means the eyes focus well only on close objects, while more distant objects appear blurred. Children are more at risk of this, as their eyes are still developing.” Mr Kazzi encouraged families in Penrith to take advantage of the outdoors this summer and make sure their kids are taking breaks from their screens.

The Y NSW was awarded the longterm contract in December last year to manage the Penrith, Hawkesbury and Bankstown facilities. Closing briefly over the holiday period, the Y’s Area Manager, Shane Simmons said that it has been an incredibly busy time for the team which is made up of a lot of familiar faces. “As a youth organisation the Y thrives in a university setting and we’re looking forward to becoming an embedded part of this community,” Mr Simmons said. “We’ve successfully transitioned the majority of former University employees to the Y, we’ve undertaken some community and stakeholder consultation and held our first strategy day. More volunteers needed to help run hospital shuttle

team of volunteers at Nepean Hospital is making sure patients and visitors experience safe and comfortable travel around the hospital grounds. They operate a free shuttle service that has just received a facelift. Nepean Hospital Acting General Manager, Diane Burton, said the shuttle is available on demand and improves accessibility for all. “The free shuttle service transports patients, carers and visitors from and between Nepean Hospital Campus car parks, entrances and patient drop off zones,” Ms Burton said. “You can get it on Monday to Friday

A
s the school holidays near an end, families across the region will commence their dreaded back to school shopping. But with a new report by Big W revealing the increasing financial pressure this is posing, a local podiatrist is urging parents to not skimp on important things like school shoes. The research predicts families to spend an average of $538 per child on school supplies and uniforms in 2020, representing a $62 or 13 per cent increase from last year. With the financial hangover of Christmas and holiday activities, there’s no doubt parents will be looking for bargains over the coming weeks. OnePointHealth Podiatrist Kristen Haywood said when it comes to a child’s school shoes, you get what you pay for. “As children are in their school shoes for an average of over 30 hours per week a poor quality, ill fitting or unsupportive shoe can increase their risk of pain and injury,” she said. “Typically a cheaper pair of shoes will be made out of poorer quality materials such as synthetic upper and outer sole.
“This can allow more torsion or flex through the midsole and heel counter of the shoe, which provides less support to your child’s feet.” Some of the more reputable pairs to look out for as per Ms Haywood’s recommendations were Ascent, Blue Haven or Clarks shoes. She said in her experience these are the most supportive and durable. When it comes to selecting the perfect shoe for your child, there are some key points to look out for. Ms Haywood suggests parents pay extra attention to ensure the shoe is the correct width, has a firm heel counter and minimal torsion through the midsole of the shoe as well as a fastening mechanism and a heel height of 4.5cms or lower. Having a full thumb space gap between the end of the longest toe and shoe will also promote longer use for growing kids. “A store that measures the foot for both length and width is preferred such as the Athletes Foot and Shoes and Sox, as they also stock higher quality brands such as Ascent, Blue Haven and Clarks,” Ms Haywood said. “A poorly fitted shoe can increase your child’s risk of foot and leg pain or injury that could impact them long term if not corrected.”

Family’s gift for new year Nepean Hospital’s first baby of 2020: Quick entrance gave Piper special honour EMILY FESZCZUK
W
hile most people in Penrith were partying to celebrate the start of the new year, Sean and Raegan Carroll were welcoming a new family member into the world. The husband and wife from Glenmore Park’s daughter Piper was the first baby born at Nepean Hospital in 2020. Ms Carroll said that her New Year’s plans changed very quickly once Piper decided she was ready to come. “I was having pains on and off all day but didn’t think much of it, so we decided to stay at home to celebrate,” Ms Carroll said. “I was a few days overdue so was well and truly ready to have her but in the early hours of the morning it hit, and it was all systems go.” Not thinking they would have the first baby of the year, Piper shocked the couple and staff with her quick delivery time. “When I went in there, they had women already in labour so I didn’t think I would be the first but mine was a nice quick one being only around two hours all up with her being born at 4.08am on January 1,” Ms Carroll said. “Our other kids were born in around nine to 12 hours in the past then this one came

so quickly so we were all really shocked.” After staying overnight Ms Carroll said Piper was ready to meet her very excited siblings.
“We already had a big family so not that much has changed but Piper is doing really well and already has so much love in her life from all of us.”

he start of the school year is an exciting time for most families but for those who are struggling it can be a time of stress. Community Smiles is calling for donations from the community to help children in need with their Back2School Essentials Drive. Community Smiles CEO Sarah Cuzner told the Weekender the not- for- profit charity is working with high need primary schools in the area to help children as the school year approaches. “With a lot of our members being parents, we identified this need as unfortunately a lot of public schools in the area are overlooked by bigger school support charities,” Ms Cuzner said. “We decided to use our platform to help children in a practical way so they can feel just like their mates and ensure they don’t have to go to school with plastic bags or hand-me-down goods.” Ms Cuzner said there are many ways to help with whatever people can give to show their support. “People can donate money that could buy a backpack filled with stationary,
supplies and a lunchbox or they could donate towards a few items, but all are tax deductible,” Ms Cuzner said. “There are also sales on so if people want to buy something, they can drop it at our drop off points to Australia Post High Street, Salt Therapy Wellness Centre on Henry Street and Flawless Laser Solutions in Glenmore Park.” One of the partner schools, Penrith South Public School’s Principal, Kerrie Beeby said that the program has been a privilege to be a part of with many positive effects on students and the wider school community. “Disadvantaged children often don’t have lovely school things like the other kids and just want to be like everyone else plus it helps with attendance and academic results,” Ms Beeby said. The program also has additional impacts, according to Ms Beeby. “The program also helps build a relationship of trust between families and schools which makes them comfortable to voice their struggles and receive help which benefits their children,” she said. This season first started airing in the US last year and is finally getting its Australian run on Channel 10 from Thursday, January 23. It’ll screen weekly at 9pm. Ê Some interesting news out of the US with medical drama ‘New Amsterdam’ being renewed for not just another season, but a mammoth three seasons. NBC’s decision marks a massive vote of confidence in the series, and follows a similar call from the network previously when it renewed ‘This Is Us’ for three

Ê Channel Nine and Channel 10 will go head-to-head in what is likely to be one of the year’s hottest TV battles with ‘Married at First Sight’ and ‘Australian Survivor: All Stars’ to premiere against each other on February 3. The key shows for both networks are returning a week ahead of the official ratings season getting underway. While ‘Married at First Sight’ was a ratings juggernaut for Nine last year, it’ll be interesting to see if it can maintain such huge audiences in 2020.

Ê ‘The Good Fight’, the spin-off to hugely popular legal drama ‘The Good Wife’, is returning to SBS later this year with a new cast member. Hugh Dancy, best known for his work in ‘Hannibal’, will be part of season four, while ‘The Good Wife’ stars Michael J Fox and Zach Grenier will also appear in the show this season. Ê Season two of Canadian legal drama ‘Burden of Truth’ returns to Fox One on Tuesday, January 21. Ê Stan has confirmed ‘Billions’ will be back on Sunday, May 3. Nathan Taylor is on leave.

At worst an icky soap opera and at best an insightful look into victims of sexual harassment fighting back, ‘Bombshell’ certainly has its moments, but overall it falls largely flat. Perhaps that’s because – in an unfortunate coincidence for the film – the extraordinarily good limited series ‘The Loudest Voice’ beat it to the punch and has already told the story of Roger Ailes and his rise and fall at Fox News in such strong detail. Anyone who has seen the series would most likely find ‘Bombshell’ to be nothing more than a highlights version – and frustratingly so, given
it hints at some of the storylines covered in the series but never finds time to go into detail. That’s not to say ‘Bombshell’ isn’t an interesting watch – it’s certainly a sophisticated take on the #metoo movement, and you can’t help but feel like a cold shower after watching the portrayal of Ailes (John Lithgow), who died in 2017 soon after his dramatic exit from the Rupert Murdoch-owned Fox. ‘Bombshell’ may be an entirely different viewing experience if you haven’t watched ‘The Loudest Voice’, but even if you haven’t, anyone without prior knowledge of the Ailes and Fox News story would probably find it bland and lacking in detail.

Lindsay MP Melissa McIntosh’s words to the community after bushfires
I
often say that Lindsay is full to the brim and overflowing with community spirit, and it has not been truer than in our local RFS response to this terrible fire season. In Lindsay, there are seven Rural Fire Service Brigades and I would like to commend Inspector Paul McGrath, Coordinator for Cumberland Zone, for his outstanding work and tremendous commitment to his crews. I will always remember his parting words as Cumberland Zone strike teams were departing for Cooma – “Thank you, and please stay safe”. This week I visited the crew at Llandilo RFS who told me about their time on the fireground this season. Whether it’s in the Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains, or the South Coast and Southern Highlands, our local volunteers from Llandilo, Regentville, Mulgoa, Londonderry, Castlereagh, Berkshire Park and Orchard Hills
have been answering the call to help our fellow Australians in need. The volunteers of the NSW RFS have shown us all what it is to be an amazing Australian. Many of them leave their families for days or even weeks at a time. Their selflessness and courage are truly inspiring as they put their lives at risk. Thank you to every RFS volunteer in our community for your service. With my own experiences having lost family homes to fires, I understand how incredibly painful this is. I also know that part of the rebuilding process starts with getting essential everyday items back around you as quick as possible. Through my office, I am collecting donations for Community Care Kits that contain those essential items for people who have lost their homes to fire.
The response from our community has been incredible with many kind and generous donations delivered to my office already. The Community Care Kits will be distributed to communities who would like our help. There has been a request from the townships of Clarence and Dargan who, just before Christmas, were devastated by bushfires. Over 30 homes were destroyed including the homes of six volunteers in the Clarence/Dargan Rural Fire Brigade who were out protecting their communities. With so much community spirit in Lindsay, representing our community as the Federal Member, especially during times like this, is something that I am incredibly proud of. Medical Director of SCIC, an RIDBC service, Associate Professor Cathy Birman said that hearing loss can lead to people withdrawing from society but if addressed, relationships can be improved. “People don’t want to ask others to repeat what they have said or feel unsure of conversations so can withdraw or feel social isolation, anxiety or depression,” Associate Professor Birman said. “When you hear better, you feel confident in social situations meaning you can communicate with your grandchildren easily, go to family events or out to dinner with friends.” Associate Professor Birman said that
hearing loss is also the single biggest modifiable risk factor in middle age for dementia. “Hearing loss in middle age is the most treatable and reversible factor that can be linked to dementia because if you can’t hear what someone is saying it increases your cognitive load,” she said. Associate Professor Birman recommends regular hearing tests after the age of 50. “Communication is the basis of a lot of our social interaction and happiness, so it is important to make it a priority and tackle hearing loss early,” she said. “Hearing loss creeps up on us so it is important to liaise with your GP or audiologist to make sure you pick up and address any hearing loss.” For a comprehensive test to determine whether an implantable solution is right for you, contact the team at SCIC, an RIDBC service, on 1300 581 391 or info@ ridbc.org.au. Fox starts 2020 in style D
ual Olympic medallist and local sporting hero Jessica Fox has kicked off the 2020 Olympic season in style, blitzing the field at the Australian Canoe Slalom Championships and winning both the women’s K1 and C1. The event at Penrith Whitewater Stadium was the season opener and first hit out of the Tokyo 2020 season for Australia’s best canoe slalom paddlers
on home waters and the lead- up event to the canoe slalom national selection season. The national titles will be followed by the 2020 Oceania Canoe Slalom Championship in Auckland (February 1-3) and the Australian Open as part of the 2020 Sydney Whitewater Festival (February 21- 23), with both events relevant for senior and U23 selections. 194 days out from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Fox impressed with clean runs and fast times over the weekend and took home the double national
title after missing last year’s nationals. Fox finished the K1 in a time of 97.88 seconds and over 10 seconds ahead of second placed Kate Eckhardt. “It was great to have our first hit out of 2020 and be back racing nationals after missing last year’s. I’m happy with my racing, especially in K1 which saw me put down some fast and clean times. It was a bit less consistent in C1 but happy to win the double,” Fox said. Fox is the only Paddle Australia athlete already selected on to the Tokyo 2020 Australian Olympic team, but national

Beach is making his mark Rising softball star takes home Sports Foundation award after tremendous year NATHAN TAYLOR
T
here’s not many people dedicated to the sport of softball more than local player, coach and umpire Matthew Beach. The 19- year- old’s passion for softball has well and truly paid off, becoming the latest recipient of the Penrith Valley Sports Foundation Senior Sports Star Award. Playing the sport since he was six, Beach is currently a member of the Penrith Softball Club and plays representative softball for Penrith City Softball Association (PCSA) and NSW. Beach began representing PCSA as a 12- year- old and has made various NSW State teams – playing at a national level – for the last three years. Not only does the Glenmore Park resident shine on the diamond, he also gives back to the sport through coaching and umpiring. Beach coaches and umpires at association level as well as State level for Softball NSW and the NSW Umpires Softball Association. He is currently a Level 3 national

On his days off, Beach also gives up his time giving back to junior softball
players by running development pitcher and catcher clinics, to help improve the pitching and catching techniques of local young up and coming players. The last two years have been very memorable for Beach. Some of his achievements include winning the Best U23 Male Pitcher Award at the 2019 U23 Men’s Australian National Championships and becoming the youngest person to be appointed head coach of PCSA U14 Boys Representative Softball Team. In 2018, Beach was named joint winner of Young Coach of the Year at the NSW Community Sports Awards, while he was also selected in the NSW U23 and U19 Men’s Softball Teams. Matthew Beach’s Senior Sports Star Award is all thanks to sponsor Panthers World of Entertainment. hysical Culture takes a lot of skill and dedication to excel in all areas of the dance sport, and the Nepean BJP Physie Club is ready to take on the new year after achieving great results in 2019 in both the individual and team components. Nepean Physie Head Teacher Kim Annesley told the Weekender that she was so excited for what the club had achieved in the past year in Australia wide competitions. “Three of our junior teams won their sections including our 9/10- year- old team who then won the Overall Nation A Grade Champions,” Ms Annesley said. “In individual competition Lauren Perry went to the Sydney Opera House and won Overall National Champion placing her first in Australia in her age category.” With the club earning a personal best of six national place getters, Ms Annesley said she wanted the community to know about all the hard work the girls put in. “Some people don’t realise that Physie

ormer Australian goalkeeper and respected football commentator Mark Bosnich fears there’s no light at the end of the tunnel for Markus Babbel at the Western Sydney Wanderers. His comments come in the wake of the Wanderers’ 2- 0 loss to Wellington last weekend, with Babbel’s side on the back foot from the start thanks to a poor first half. Coach Babbel is now under immense pressure with the Wanderers sitting in eighth spot on the A- League ladder and at serious risk of missing the post- season despite having a squad that most believe should be competing in the Finals. “I’ve been a big big supporter of him but my patience is wearing thin and God knows what the Western Sydney Wanderers supporters are feeling at this moment in time,” Bosnich said on Fox Sports. “It’s a different story if you see some light at the end of the tunnel but it’s getting very, very dim.” Bosnich said the first half performance against the Phoenix was “apathetic and indifferent”.
