C

onstruction has officially started on the largest apartment project in Penrith’s history, as a new era for the city continues to develop.

The first sod was turned on the new development at Thornton on Tuesday morning.

The residential apartment and commercial precinct is the first of its kind in the Penrith area, and a new style of urban living for the region. It is set to transform the northern part of the city.

Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler said the vision of the developers, St Hilliers and First Point Projects, fits well with the city’s lifestyle vision of inner city living close to amenities.

“The most successful cities are the ones that

have the vibrancy, and this is created by people living close to services with easy and convenient access to transport,” he said.

“This is Thornton in a nutshell... Thornton is a part of plans to improve connections between housing, transport, services and create better pathways between the city centre and other parts of Penrith.”

Majority support same sex marriage Poll shows Penrith residents are ready to throw their support behind marriage equality DALE DRINKWATER

enrith is starting to throw its support behind marriage equality.

An exclusive Western Weekender survey has revealed that a majority of people in the local area support same sex marriage, as pressure mounts on the Federal Government to act.

The results of the poll, conducted in the middle of Penrith, show strong support for gay marriage, with 79 per cent of participants answering ‘yes’ and just 21 per cent answering ‘no’.

Of the 161 people that said ‘yes’, 59 of them were men, and 102 were women, and many said that same gendered people getting married had nothing to do with them.

Just 41 people questioned said ‘no’, with 25 of them men, and 16 women, and some suggested gay and lesbian people should have similar rights other than marriage, such as a “legal union”.

Wayne Chilver from Australian Marriage Equality (AME), said he has asked the Penrith community at local events whether they support gay marriage, with similar results.

“The results the Weekender got were

consistent with what we have, of around 70 per cent of people in favour of gay marriage,” he said.

Rodney Croome, National Director at AME, said it’s great to see such strong support for marriage equality in Penrith.

“This poll sends a strong message to Fiona Scott that her electorate wants marriage equality and she should vote for the reform when it comes before parliament,” he said.

“Penrith is often seen as representative of middle Australia so this poll sends a strong message to all Canberra politicians that the nation overwhelmingly wants marriage equality.”

Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott said if a free vote was held, her vote on marriage equality will reflect the views of the community.

“I am actively seeking consensus in the community and I will vote in accordance with what we find, and if it comes through that way I will vote that way,” she said.

“How our community feels about it is an important issue – I will be seeking a fair, even and balanced consensus.

“I am a strong advocate for a free vote, but I believe my vote needs to carry the thoughts and feelings to this important issue of the people of Lindsay.”

Penrith’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community have previously come together in the fight against transphobia and homophobia Ms Scott said she would seriously consider any legislation put on the table.

“Once we have legislation before the parliament that has been worked through

the tri-party process, we can make an informed decision that reflects the thoughts and feelings of the people,” she said.

Killing off the Emus is no way to solve union’s crisis in the west The Penrith Emus rugby union club, which plays in the Shute Shield competition, has received more publicity in the last month than they’ve received at any stage in their 50-year history.

Unfortunately, not much of it has been positive and this week things took a dark twist with speculation that a plan was being floated to shut down the struggling Emus as well as Parramatta and form a new western Sydney club, which would play out of Blacktown.

That is surely not the answer.

It is true that the Emus are struggling big-time, and have been for a number of years.

I attended their season launch a few years back and it involved wives and partners cooking the food and the free drinks being cut half way through the night, replaced with a $5 charge.

It was far from the traditional corporate spreads put on by other sporting teams but it did drive home the message of how passionate the people involved in the club are. The Emus are a true community-focused club and to rip them out of the very community they represent doesn’t make any sense.

The Weekender has covered the Emus extensively over the last four or five years, and those involved with the club truly have its best interests at heart.

Most are volunteers who are frustrated at the lack of support and structures in place to make the Emus a true competitor in the competition.

President Jim Hook is a decent administrator who could have easily walked away from the struggling club in the face of adversity but has instead stayed to fight for what he believes in.

Head Coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu always makes himself available to our reporters, even if his side has been hammered yet again. He too could have walked away and saved himself from the embarrassment that follows the club at the moment, but he’s decided to stick solid.

be kicked to the ground by the powers that be in rugby union, and deserve the support they require to build a club that the community can be proud to support.

Shutting down 50 years of history and moving it up the road to Blacktown is an outrageous idea that needs to be shut down immediately.

The Emus deserve better than that.

Fixed terms a must for the future Speculation surrounding an early election this week is the best evidence yet that Australia needs fixed terms when it comes to Federal Parliament.

Not only that, but the fixed terms need to extend to four or even five years to ensure that Governments deliver on their promises, legitimately plan for the future and don’t purely focus on the next election once they enter the second year of their term.

In a country like Australia, there is absolutely no need for ongoing speculation about election dates and build-ups to the next poll that go for half of a Government’s term.

With three levels of Government, it’s about time we structured things a little smarter and in a way that promotes long-term vision and achievable results.

Caught by surprise... again Winter has somehow caught Australia by surprise for the 227th year in a row.

Yes, it’s been cold this week.

It tends to happen every year around the months of June, July and August. Amazing how consistent it is, really.

And here’s a tip: In around December, January and February it’ll get quite hot. Some might even call it a “heat wave”, as we all try to come to terms with the fact that summer has, yet again, arrived.

Now that we’re using the term “Antarctic Vortex” in winter, I can’t wait to see what we come up with in summer.

Long delays for licence tests now easing, says Service NSW @daledrinkwater

Penrith mum is urging learner drivers to get in early to book their provisional licence practical test, after her son experienced exceptionally long waiting times.

Christine Shaw said in February, there were no spaces available at the Service NSW Penrith branch for her son to book his P1 licence practical test, forcing them to travel elsewhere for the test.

“We logged on to the site just to be told there were no spaces available for the next six months through the Penrith branch,” she said.

“I picked any time in the near future, and the site said nothing was available, so I thought I must be doing something wrong.”

Mrs Shaw said she and her son then went into the Penrith branch early one Saturday morning, and were told the information online was in fact correct.

“That’s when my son was told there was nothing available in Penrith,” she said.

“They said we can’t help you, you will have to book it through Richmond or Mt Druitt.”

Mrs Shaw booked a test for her son in Richmond, which ended up costing her family more money.

Changing face of Penrith Story continued from » p. 1 State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres said Thornton is the largest apartment development in Penrith’s history, and will offer Penrith diversity and choice.

“People don’t want to live in the same home that their parents lived in. That’s a reflection of the changing face of this community, and this development is at the forefront of that,” he said.

Mr Ayres said it will be confronting for some people to see their city change, but insisted it is changing for the better.

“Everything about this project is quality, it’s not going to cut corners, it’s going to raise the bar and meet the expectations of the new west,” he said.

The whole development will offer over 500 apartments, and 5,500 square metres of commercial space in the middle of Penrith, to include cafes, restaurants, a gym, supermarket and medical centre.

The 5,000 Thornton residents will have these services within walking distance to Penrith Station, a masterplan by UrbanGrowth that is expected to reshape how people live in the city.

First Point Projects Executive Director, Mark Hovey said first home buyers and those downsizing have taken full advantage of Thornton’s price and location.

“The pricing point allows for stamp duty exemption and they receive first home buyers grants; downsizers love it as they still get to stay in the community and enjoy the local amenity,” he said.

Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler said the PDAP was formed as part of a new strategy, to give advice on Council’s property portfolio and capitalise on future opportunities.

“The calibre of the recommended panel members is outstanding and will bring a depth of experience and insight to Council’s future property transactions that will benefit the city,” he said “The Panel’s extensive property expertise, with a mix of residential and commercial property experience and town planning knowledge, will be a powerful tool for Council to achieve its property objectives.”

Four experienced individuals were appointed to the PDAP, including Sean O’Toole, Peter Dransfield, John Elvy and Michael Scott.

Jordan Springs: Man to front court over drink driving

A man has been charged after police searched his vehicle and found a number of registration plates.

The 33-year-old from Penrith was driving a white Ford ute when he began behaving suspiciously, giving police officers cause to search his vehicle.

At around midnight on Thursday, July 9, police allege they found several registration plates in the back of the man’s ute.

They allege they were stolen from the Rouse Hill and Penrith areas between March and June this year.

He was charged with goods in custody and is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on August 10.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.

A man was caught drink driving in Jordan Springs last week and is due to appear in court later this month.

At about 12.40am on Thursday, July 7, police were driving along Jordan Springs Boulevard in Jordan Springs when they pulled over a Mitsubishi Lancer.

The 21-year-old man, from Cranebrook, was given a random breath test, testing positive and was then taken back to Penrith Police Station.

After further testing he was given a field court attendance notice for a low range PCA charge.

He is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on July 30.

Motorists are reminded that every police car is a mobile RBT.

Emu Plains: Man busted drink driving on Russell Street

Jamisontown: Drink driver caught on Jamison Road

A driver is due to appear in court after testing positive to a roadside breath test.

On Sunday, July 12, a man was driving along Russell Street in Emu Plains when police saw cause to pull him over.

The 38-year-old from Granville was given a random breath test where he tested positive.

He was taken back to Penrith Police Station where he was given a field court attendance notice for a low range PCA. He is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on August 6.

Motorists are reminded that every police car is a mobile RBT.

A woman has had her license suspended after testing positive to a roadside breath test.

At about 1.20pm on Sunday, July 12, police were alerted to the woman’s manner of driving along Jamison Road.

The 22-year-old, from South Penrith, was driving a white Holden Commodore ute when she was pulled over and given a breath test.

She tested positive and was taken back to Penrith Police Station.

She had her license suspended and is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on August 5 over the matter.

Freak accident leaves teenager in hospital JADE ALIPRANDI

wo young men have been hospitalised this week after separate incidents in the Penrith area.

On Sunday, July 12, a 17-year-old boy was driving his four-wheel drive when he became bogged while off-roading at a fire trail waterhole off Devlin Road in Penrith.

Described by police as a “freak accident”, emergency services were called to the area at about 9.20pm after the man was hit in the back of the head during what police believe to be the recovery operation.

“We believe the young man was driving when he became bogged and then called for another 4WD to come and rescue him,” said Detective Inspector Grant Healey from Penrith Police.

“During the recovery operation we believe he was hit in the back of the head with a piece of metal from the recovery equipment.”

A crime scene has since been established at the site where police officers from Penrith Police Station will be continuing their investigations.

The man was transported by helicopter to Westmead Hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

“The area is private property and so he was trespassing, meaning he should not have been there,” Mr Healey said.

“We believe it to have been a total freak accident.”

Police officers were able to retrieve the vehicle on Monday for further examinations.

It is not yet known how many passengers the young man had in the car with him at the time.

Inquiries are also continuing after a teenage male collided with a fence when riding his motorbike in the same area on Monday afternoon. The 19-year-old suffered serious non-life threatening injuries as a result of the crash.

At about 5.30pm, paramedics treated the man at the scene for back and lower limb injuries before he was flown by helicopter to Westmead Hospital for further treatment.

Penrith Police are warning that anyone who does trespass on the land, known as ‘The Dropzone’, can be charged.

“We don’t want anymore serious injuries to occur, especially in this area where it is hard for emergency services to get in there,” Mr Healey said.

Investigations are continuing into both incidents.

PUBLIC NOTICE Council’s Heritage Assistance Fund 2015/2016 – $25,000 Funding Available Penrith City Council has continued to recognise local cultural heritage values, and to promote the City’s cultural and environmental heritage by establishing a Heritage Assistance Fund with $25,000 funding available.

The heritage assistance fund has been set up to financially assist owners, lessees and not-for-profit organisations of heritage items and conservation areas such as buildings, houses and archaeological sites. The fund also offers grants for conservation work to properties listed in the Penrith Local Environmental Plan 2010 as heritage items or within heritage conservation areas.

Funding offered is on a $1 for $1 basis where Council contributes half of the cost of the restoration works. Works can range from $1,000–$2,000 to a maximum of $5,000 of works. Funding will be issued upon completion of all approved works.

Should you wish to make an application for funding please ensure it is received at Council no later than Monday, 31 August 2015.

A successful application will demonstrate that the proposed works are essential to maintaining the significance of an item, that is, the work is appropriate from a heritage perspective.

Smoke Alarm Awareness Week

A smoke alarm could save your life Local fire crews urge Penrith residents to check their smoke alarms as cold winter continues JADE ALIPRANDI

mergency services are warning residents to check their smoke alarms are working ahead of Smoke Alarm Awareness Week from July 20 to July 26.

Fire and Rescue NSW’s Regentville station is reminding everyone of the legal requirement to have a working smoke alarm in any residential property.

“Living in a home without a working smoke alarm is risky business,” Regentville Station Commander, Phil Marsh said.

“It is the law in NSW that every residential property must have a working smoke alarm, and having two smoke alarms is even better.”

There are two types of smoke alarms – Ionisation smoke alarms and Photoelectric smoke alarms.

Ionisation smoke alarms detect invisible particles of combustion and activate quickly for fast flaming fires rather than smoke.

Fire crews at Regentville Fire and Rescue are encouraging residents to update their smoke alarms with the Photoelectric type.

This type of alarm detects visible particles and is particularly responsive to smoke and soldering fires.

“They are far better because they present the opportunity for early detection in all fire scenarios due to the fact they don’t produce as many false readings as they are less sensitive in a way,” Station Commander Marsh said.

Having been a firefighter for almost 38 years, Mr Marsh said he has seen several cases over his time where people have taken the battery out of a smoke alarm so it will stop beeping when it goes off, usually from cooking dinner.

“They forget to put it back in and that causes a problem if a real fire were to ever ensue,” he said.

“The message for all residents and community members is to have a smoke alarm in the house so you will be notified if a fire does break out.”

Fire crews are also recommending to change your smoke alarm battery when daylight savings rolls around later this year.

It is a proven fact that smoke alarms save lives, and fire crews warn that you’re playing with your life if you don’t have a smoke alarm installed.

Elderly and disabled residents can contact the station on 4733 6851 to organise for a crew member to install a working smoke alarm under their ‘Sabre Program’.

Major tanker crash shuts highway Police still seeking witnesses after woman suffers injuries in frightening Werrington smash TROY DODDS

olice investigating a crash involving a tanker truck and a car on the Great Western Highway last week are appealing for further witnesses to come forward.

About 10am last Thursday, a Cootes LPG tanker truck and a Toyota Corolla collided on the Great Western Highway opposite the University of Western Sydney.

The tanker rolled and all lanes were blocked for a number of hours.

“The driver of the tanker, a 34-year-old Blacktown man, was taken by NSW Ambulance Paramedics to Nepean Hospital,” a police spokesperson said.

“The driver of the Toyota Corolla, a 26-year-old Orchard Hills woman, was treated at the scene before [being] flown to hospital by Careflight Helicopter.

“She received a fracture to her right ankle and will undergo further scans on her knee.”

Police from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit are investigating the crash and urging any witnesses to the accident who have not yet spoken to police to come forward.

In particular police would like to speak

with the drivers of two cars who may have been travelling near the truck prior to the crash.

An exclusion zone was set up as a precaution following the crash and the University of Western Sydney was evacuated.

Meanwhile, a Roads and Maritime Services and NSW Police inspection of heavy vehicles operated by Cootes Transport has given them the all clear.

Roads and Maritime’s Director of Safety and Compliance, Peter Wells said the joint traffic taskforce rigorously inspected 16 vehicle units.

“Cootes has been under examination by the taskforce since the fatal crash in Mona Vale in October 2013 and the 100 per cent compliance result of these units shows our stringent regime is working,” he said.

“A team of investigators has been working closely with Cootes to ensure the company complies with strict business processes and mechanical regimes, which has resulted in a significant improvement and upgrade in Cootes’ vehicle fleet.

“It is important and pleasing to be able assure the community that this compliance process is effective and these vehicles are safe to operate on our roads.”

he State Opposition has claimed the Baird Liberal Government has turned its back on the people of Jordan Springs, with no funding allocated for a public school in the 2015 State Budget.

Opposition Leader, Luke Foley visited Jordan Springs with Member for Londonderry, Prue Car on Tuesday, and said the current lack of funding decreases the chances the school will be finished in the first term of a Liberal Government.

“The promise they made the people in the election was to deliver it in this four year term, so at the latest to open it for the 2019 school year,” he said.

Mr Foley said the chances that the Government could announce funding for a school in the next budget and complete it in a couple of years have become remote.

“Given there is no money in the 2015/2016 Budget, it’s becoming close to impossible for them to deliver on their promise,” he said.

“You really need to see an allocation in the current budget if they’re to deliver on their commitment [on time].”

Ms Car said it is not good enough if the Government were to start construction of a primary school in 2020.

“The community knows it, that’s why

“We need to make sure the design and consultation is comprehensive, and that we see a timeline of completion of work,” he said.

“Once the park is finished, there needs to be a continuing funding budget for entertainment… for the CBD Corporation to continue their marketing and promotion, so people know there is always something happening at the park.”

Gai Hawthorn from Penrith’s CBD Corporation welcomed Mr Martin’s support, and said activating the area will bring opportunity for restaurants and boost a night time economy for the Penrith CBD.

safer way of connecting cyclists and pedestrians between Emu Plains and Penrith is now one step

closer.

Two businesses have now been shortlisted to formally submit tenders to build the new bridge across the historic Nepean River rowing course, with construction expected to start early next year.

Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, said the project is progressing well and preliminary work is continuing. “Last month divers checked the river bed for any obstructions as part of recent utility investigation work,� he said. “Further work is continuing using a truck-mounted rig to drill one borehole on the eastern side and 10 boreholes on the western side of the river to inform the relocation of utilities.�

Mr Ayres has thanked the community for their patience while the work is done, and for their invaluable feedback to the planning of the bridge design. “Community members are thanked in advance for their patience while early work is underway to inform major building for this project,� he said. “The community has provided extensive feedback helping us improve the design and location of this bridge which

The relocation of overhead power lines to run alongside the Victoria Bridge will start late this year, with building work to start next year.

Supermarket war has a new entrant IGA promises to price match Coles and Woolworths as battle for your grocery dollar heats up JADE ALIPRANDI

UPA IGA team members at Werrington County are welcoming new customers to the store with the introduction of a price match system across the board at all IGA supermarkets.

Although SUPA IGA Werrington County has been running the price match system for the past two years, it is only now that co-owner Antoine Rizk is seeing an increase in customers.

“More people are purchasing more items at the store and it has only been two weeks since it started being advertised,” Mr Rizk said.

“It’s well overdue that every IGA is adopting this system as we have been running it for two years – we should see some real progress within our store now.”

The Price Match Promise initiative will see independent retailers under the IGA banner price matching hundreds of everyday items representing significant savings for locals.

Over 800 stores are participating in the campaign.

“There is basically every other supermarket chain you can think of around our store so to now have the Price Match

ent supermarket chain, two cents from every sale of an IGA Signature product is donated to IGA Community Chest, with over $75 million raised to date.

“Customers should support local supermarkets as they are a part of their local community,” Mr Rizk said.

“Our staff are locals and we as a store

take part in several community activities from fundraising to sponsoring.”

Penrith City Council has accepted terms of a draft policy for managing the placement of charity clothing bins on Council owned land. At a policy review meeting on Monday night, Councillors discussed a range of management issues that have been impacting on the amenity of bin placement locations across the Local Government Area. The purpose of the draft policy is to ensure that charity bins are in safe and accessible locations across the city. Councillor Michelle Tormey also proposed that a daily collection service be put in place to ensure the bins do not overfill, as people place items next to the bin that end up damaged and unusable.

Council endorsed the draft policy as a Policy of Council, and the draft policy will be exhibited for public comment.

Council has been addressed by National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) on the roll out of the scheme in Penrith and surrounding LGAs. Mary Hawkins from the NDIA, said the early roll out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme for young people aged 0 to 17-years-old, means this area has a particular focus on early intervention in children. Ms Hawkins said to Council that the big difference with the new scheme is that the funding is associated with the individual,

no longer to an organisation, so an individual can make choices about what services they need, how and when. She said that the full roll out of the scheme will begin in July 2016, and be completed by July 2019. She added that by then, the scheme will support around 460,000 Australians with a disability.

Applications are now open for Heritage Assistance Fund Grants, that assists owners, renters and notfor-profit organisations to repair and maintain heritage listed properties.

The funding is offered on a dollar-fordollar basis where Council contributes half of the cost of the restoration works, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.

Mayor Ross Fowler said Penrith’s bicentenary is an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the rich history of Penrith City. “It’s important we do everything we can to make sure these beautiful buildings, streetscapes and facades are here for future generations to appreciate and enjoy,” he said. enrith Police celebrated in style at last week’s milestone baton relay event marking 100 years of women in the police force.

Last Thursday, July 9 local community members were invited to attend the event that was held along the Nepean River near the boat ramp.

Detective Inspector Grant Healey from Penrith Police Station said the event was a great success.

“It was a really nice day,” he said.

“Everyone seemed to have a great time with the horses and the dogs from the dog squad as well as getting the chance to sit on some trail bikes.”

A celebration of compassion, courage and strength of women in our police force, politicians, residents, children and local police officers joined in on the festivities.

The baton relay began on March 8 at the Sydney Opera House and is now being passed to different Local Area Commands around NSW in celebration of the milestone.

“We would like to thank all the people that came out and participated in our event,” Mr Healey said.

If you didn’t know, then you should probably head along to Penrith City Library’s meat pie exhibition, Pie in July, that’s running until July 31.

On Wednesday, July 22 from 6.30pm, the library’s lower lounge will host a free talk on the history of the good old Australian meat pie, that Information Librarian, Lorraine Stacker said will have entertainment and free pie tasting.

“Retired cooking and nutrition teacher Anne Arthur will be talking about the history of the meat pie, and Tom Lindsay, from Simple Simon Pie Making Equipment, will talk about the current meat pie industry,” she said.

“There will also be an entertainment group, the Meat Pie Continuum, singing meat pie songs, and after the talk local pie makers, Sargents Pies in Colyton, will be providing free mini meat pies and sausage rolls.”

Smoking won’t be banned

Smoking is still legal – despite the do gooders best efforts. And as long as the government reaps the rewards from taxes that smokers pay, then it will remain legal. I think ice freaks get more tolerance than smokers. But I agree with no smoking in eating areas. A no brainer really. I don’t agree with banning it in open areas, everyone has a right to use them – smoker or not. If I am going to be banned from an open outdoor area, then I expect to pay lower taxes as I am being discriminated against.

In response to Charles Smith (Dear Weekender, July 10), it is determined by the authorities that 0.05 per cent alcohol readings hinder a person’s performance behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. One glass of red wine consumed by a person of small stature before picking up the kids would be running a risk, to the kids.

So we either breathalise the councillors or encourage zero alcohol. In relation to Councillor Cornish’s so called “misinformation “ about the anti-mosque protest it is my understanding that Penrith Council have joined with defendants Muhammadi Welfare Association and Imam Ali in the current Land & Environment Court case.

Councillor Cornish being one of four who voted against the mosque’s DA approvals.

One must also consider where influence is imparted on disaffected young people who have chosen to participate with Islamic State in the Middle East conflict.

Prison should be prison The recent prisoners rioting over smoking bans, tough luck, they broke society’s rules, they pay the price. Jails are not a holiday house paid for by taxpayers, they should get only sustenance from food and cold water, no tea/coffee; no special diets, cultural or other considerations, all food cooked in lard. You don’t like it? Don’t break the law! It’s not a holiday home where you get personal considerations and can order McDonald’s or ice-cream.

Losing your rights of free activity and choice is part of the incarceration penalty.

Leniency is in fact a reward, so there must be no leniency whatsoever under any circumstances.

After trialling extended trading hours last summer, centre management decided to change from a 4pm close to a 5pm close on Sundays.

Westfield Penrith Centre Manager, Paul Stonebridge said the move has been met with great feedback.

“We know our shoppers lead busy lives

“Ongoing requests were made from the community to extend trading hours permanently and after taking this feedback on board, we worked with our retailers to make it happen.”

Families took to the shops on Sunday, July 12 to enjoy the first Sunday of extended trading.

f you’ve ever wanted to take part in the Tour de France but didn’t want to pedal some 3,500 kilometres around the French countryside, you can now do so from the comfort of your own living room whilst raising money for charity.

The Leukaemia Foundation are running their ‘Tour de Lounge’ fundraiser again this year, helping to raise money for research into Leukaemia.

Penrith resident and Leukaemia patient, Joan Short, now 75-years-old, was diagnosed at 70 with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma but is now in remission and has check-ups every three months.

“Tour de Lounge is a fabulous idea for a fundraiser as it’s a really good way for people to be involved while having a bit of fun too,” she said.

Now an annual event, Penrith resident and Leukaemia Foundation employee Gail Ladner will be coordinating the event in support of her friend Mrs Short.

“I’ve been touched by blood cancer in several ways and I think it’s great that I can help out,” Ms Ladner said.

Turning back Time

Penrith’s greatest ever mystery Dale Drinkwater looks back at the disappearance of Lynette Melbin, who vanished without a trace in 1972. The mystery remains unsolved to this day...

onday, June 5, 1972 is a date that would send chills down the spine of Penrith locals, especially the friends and family of Lynette Ann

Melbin.

15-year-old Lynette wasn’t a big girl, just 155 centimetres tall with fair hair and hazel eyes, and was living locally with her family and twin sister, who she was very close with.

Lynette was last seen hanging out with three of her friends at Penrith Plaza, where she went and told her mother at work that she was going home to get changed before heading to her boyfriend’s house.

Lynette was never seen again.

And so started one of Penrith’s biggest ever mysteries, that remains unsolved more than 40 years later.

There has been no trace of Lynette since that day in 1972.

Six years after her disappearance, in September 1978, The Sun Herald readdressed her missing persons case.

“She wouldn’t even go in the dark to put a bin out, let alone just disappear,” she said to Missing Persons Unit detectives.

On the program, Lynette’s father, Terry Melbin, said when they first reported Lynette was missing, it was hard to convince police she hadn’t just run away.

“Their first reaction was that she had run away, and you couldn’t convince them that she hadn’t run away because she’s very close to her twin sister,” he said.

Mr Melbin spoke of his heartbreak at losing his daughter, and said as the years go on, it had gotten harder and harder to believe that Lynette would be found.

“You go to the Coroner’s Court and you hear them say that somewhere around June 5, 1972, that our daughter met her death. That’s hard to take,” he said.

“We have this horrible feeling that we could go to our graves not ever knowing what happened to Lynette.

“We had four children, we’ve still got four children, but one of them we don’t know where she is and we’d love to find that out.”

In 2006, 34 years after her initial disappearance, Lynette’s case was reopened

The report said that Lynette’s grieving father would search the streets of Sydney late at night in the hope he might come across some sort of a clue in his daughter’s disappearance.

As a parent, sibling, cousin or friend could only imagine, never knowing where Lynette disappeared to that night, has taken a toll on her family.

Speaking with television show ‘Missing Persons Unit’ in 2006, Lynette’s mother, Pamela Melbin, retold the tragic story of the day her daughter went missing.

“On the Sunday night she went to babysit her friend’s children in Mt Druitt,” she said.

“I worked at Woolworths at the time, and she’d come in there [on Monday] and asked could she go to her boyfriend’s place.”

Mrs Melbin finished work at 5.30pm, and said that both she and Lynette agreed that’s when she would be picked up.

“When I went to pick her up she wasn’t there,” she said.

Lynette has made no contact with family or friends since that date, and Mrs Melbin suggested the disappearance of her daughter was out of character.

when a witness came forward and identified a man seen with Lynette in the weeks before she vanished.

The witness was a former member of the Penrith community, who said they had seen a person with Lynette that was much older than her, and that it was out of character for her to be with him.

The witness, who was very young at the time of Lynette’s disappearance, withheld the information under the impression that police had the investigation covered.

Detectives on the case said police would have spoken to this person of interest, but at the time, everyone who knew Lynette didn’t know she had any association with this person.

The Missing Persons Unit said Mr Melbin recognised the face of the man seen with Lynette, after being presented a photo of them together.

Since then, the case has been suspended, with very few fresh leads.

While it is highly likely that Lynette Melbin passed away long ago, her remains have never been found.

If she were alive today, Lynette Melbin would be 58-years-old.

f there is one thing that highly successful people have in common, it is discipline. They rarely waste time, they see every moment as an opportunity and they make plans (even if those plans are flexible). So here are some tips for becoming more like them: 1. Look for smarter ways to work.

It is easy to get stuck in the same methods and processes: we are generally all creatures of habit!

Be efficient in your procedures and ensure that you are not getting distracted by unimportant tasks that can wait. Prioritise your day and stick to a plan.

2. Watch your finances. Particularly if you are more on the creative side of business, it can be intimidating and daunting to keep on top of your finances.

But ‘knowing your numbers’ will give you a great deal of useful information about how your business is performing and which direction to focus on.

Make analysing your financial reports a part of your weekly tasks.

3. Find new business. Some of us

are really great at networking and building relationships with prospective and current customers.

Many of us need to work at this, which takes a disciplined and planned approach.

Schedule in regular face to face meetings with like-minded business people, keep in contact with your customers (and thank them for referrals) and always be on the lookout for ways to connect.

4. Manage yourself. We all have times of procrastination and less productive days.

However, being disciplined with our health can have a great impact on our ability to be decisive or push through hard work.

5. Sell yourself. Train yourself to see every interaction, whether it is face to face, online or via more formal marketing, as an opportunity to ‘sell’ your brand.

You and your staff are the face of the business. Have a disciplined approach to consistently projecting an image that encourages customers to interact with you.

It may be a parent that is occupying an entry level job in your business, or staff that only considers their job a short term role, or a highly skilled person that is just happy to do their job and not take on any extra responsibility.

People with no ambition to progress their careers can have special management needs.

To keep these employees motivated you will first need to understand what motivates them.

As a manager you will have some team members that have no real desire to advance their careers. When this happens the management strategies that you have used in the past will not work with them.

Once you know this you can tailor your motivation and rewards so that their job is meaningful.

Here are my tips for managing and motivating people who have no interest in learning new skills or advancing: Get to Know Your Team. It’s important to get to know the individuals within your team.

The more you know about their personal lives and goals, the better you’ll

be able to structure rewards that keep them motivated.

Identify People’s Needs. Doing what you can to boost people’s confidence can be a great motivator, and can lead to significantly increased productivity.

Increase Job Satisfaction. A good example of this would be to get rid of an oppressive company policy such as banning the taking of personal calls at work. Trusting employees by removing these negative elements can build team trust and create loyalty.

Also, ensure that you provide a fair and safe environment, one in which people can have great working relationships with co-workers, and one where people are given proper recognition for their achievement.

Appreciate contribution. Reward your team by simply saying “thank you”.

Recognition and appreciation for a job well done can be an incredible motivator.

Give responsibility. Having control over what we do is a major source of job satisfaction for most people. The more control they have over their work, the more they’ll own, and take responsibility for, their tasks.

enrith fans are most likely on the verge of giving up on season 2015, a year that promised so much but has been torn apart by injury and now appears destined for the books of “what could have been”.

Admittedly, I’ve got the Panthers down for losses against the Storm this Friday and against the Rabbitohs at ANZ Stadium in a few weeks. But I think they can realistically win matches against Canberra (twice), Parramatta, the Warriors, St George-Illawarra and Newcastle.

That’s 12 competition points and enough to ensure the Panthers qualify for the finals with 30 points.

It sounds simple enough in theory, but we all know that theory doesn’t win football games.

All the Panthers can do at the moment is take things week by week, and the first task is a trip to Melbourne to play a Storm side that loves celebrating big player milestones – and they’ve got a beauty this week.

Cameron Smith plays his 300th first grade game, an enormous achievement and one made even bigger by the fact he’s returning home for the first time since Queensland’s sensational series win.

The Storm’s preparation hasn’t been ideal for this game and they confront the shortest turnaround allowed by the NRL – Sunday afternoon in New Zealand into Friday night at home.

However, Melbourne are such a professional outfit that such issues rarely worry them. Coach Craig Bellamy will simply be happy that his side is back under his total control, with the Origin series that so often disrupts the Storm now confined to history as the race for the finals begins.

Bellamy was unhappy with the way his side started the game against the Warriors last Sunday, and you can be sure that Melbourne won’t be slow out of the blocks.

Penrith don’t have the ability or confidence in attack at the moment to chase a game – a 12 point lead is probably enough for opposition sides to feel comfortable.

The Panthers simply couldn’t contain the Roosters last weekend and coach Ivan Cleary made it clear post-game that he was unhappy with the way his side defended,

even questioning the attitude of his squad when it came to defence.

It would appear Cleary is over blaming injuries. He knows that now is not the time for excuses. After all, all the complaining in the world isn’t going to change the length of the injury list and we’re at a stage in the season now where Cleary simply needs the absolute best out of the 17 blokes who run onto the field each and every week. The problem is, some of those 17 look out of sorts.

Jamie Soward is clearly struggling with a couple of injuries that will almost certainly need post-season attention, while Waqa Blake is not yet to the standard of a weekto-week first grade footballer but can’t be dropped while Penrith’s outside backs are so decimated. In truth it’s probably doing him more harm than good at the moment, but Cleary has little choice.

Penrith will put in one hell of an effort tonight, but I can’t see it being enough against a hungry, professional Storm outfit that love this time of year.

was fuming during a video session with his team on Monday afternoon. The session ran 40 minutes over time, and the playing group certainly looked uncomfortable as they exited.

» Clubs and fans often complain about

the lack of positive stories that come out of their football teams but the other side of that argument is rarely aired.

Clubs control media sessions so tightly these days that it’s often difficult to get an exclusive, positive yarn with players.

Take for example the story of 17-year-old Nathan Cleary, son of Ivan and student at St Dominic’s College, who was last week selected in the Australian Schoolboys side for an upcoming Test series against New Zealand. It’s a fantastic story with an incredible angle given the father/son connection, but the Panthers have shut down any interview prospects with the youngster.

Yeo’s down to earth nature, maturity and team focus will no doubt put the youngster in good stead for a long career in rugby league.

wo seasons in and his name wouldn’t ring a bell with the casual rugby league fan, in fact even most of Penrith’s supporter base would barely recognise him walking down the street.

But that’s exactly how 21-year-old Isaah Yeo likes it.

He knows he’s not a superstar, one of Penrith’s flashy players who steal all the headlines – he’s just there to do a job and do it well.

The Dubbo-born product made his NRL debut last year, during the opening game of the season, and went on to play 10 games in his rookie year.

This season Yeo’s tally sits at 13 and he’s looking more and more comfortable with every game he plays.

“It took me a couple of weeks to get back into it this year, after the success of last year, but after a good chat with Ivan and Gus, it really turned my game around,” Yeo told Extra Time.

“I’m just trying to be consistent like last year. I know I’m not a superstar or anything like that but I think the more I

We can play the role of party poopers for Cameron Smith’s 300th game.

Both teams are coming off a last start loss, with the Storm having the extra motivation to get a win for their most capped captain.

Our motivation is simple, continue the rise in the back-end of the season and build some momentum towards the finals.

o State of Origin is behind us for another year but what a long 12 months it’s going to be for Laurie Daley and his mob at NSWRL headquarters.

So what did go wrong?

This is the big question that Daley and his staff will already be trying to figure out.

Having spent time in all six NSW camps over the last two years in Coffs Harbour, it seemed to me that everything that could be done to prepare this side was being done.

So much effort went into the players’ minds to get them to believe they finally had the answer to breaking the Queensland dominance. And, for a while, NSW seemed to have the measure of those cocky Maroons.

Were we deluded?

Was it just the absence of Cooper Cronk?

How much damage mentally has been done to the Blues boys after a record flogging in Origin III? That remains to be seen.

There’s so many things for Daley to consider next year.

Does he stay loyal?

Does Mitchell Pearce deserve another

shot after so many failed Origin campaigns (not that I think any of the losses are his fault, but surely he’s mentally scarred).

Supposedly Thurston added more to his woes with an all-time sledge during the game along the lines of him being the worst NSW halfback in history, and the closest he will get to holding up the shield is a photo with the King Wally statue outside Suncorp Stadium. Ouch!

Trent Hodkinson could barely retain his spot at the Bulldogs, so will he be back?

Many questioned Will Hopoate’s selection, including myself, he just doesn’t look like a damaging Origin-style winger.

For all the talk of Aaron Woods and David Klemmer having it over the Maroons pack, you’d have to say Corey Parker and his men hit back in Origin III. Perhaps some Luke Lewis experience for NSW would have been handy.

Yes there sure is plenty for Laurie to think about, so let’s hope he can come up with the answers and get this Blues team back to where we all thought they were before Origin III – and that was a genuine Origin threat.

own and out after a lengthy video review session and sporting a black left eye, Panthers prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard did not want to speak about the disaster that was last Saturday night against the Sydney Roosters.

Embarrassed 24-4 at home, players were forced to sit through the torture once more on Monday afternoon, with their video session with an irate Ivan Cleary running 40 minutes over time.

Once players left the video room to head down to an awaiting juniors clinic outside, chatting about the Roosters debacle wasn’t the best conversation topic.

“Basically the Roosters were too good and wanted it more. We’re over it now and we’re looking forward to Melbourne,” Campbell-Gillard bluntly told Extra Time.

The 21-year-old, who made his NRL debut in Round 1 this year, made just 59 metres from 39 minutes of game-time against the premiership heavyweights – his second lowest metres gained all season.

“We probably defended too much on the night and we didn’t have the ball. I’ve cleared that from my memory now and I’m looking forward to Melbourne,” he affirmed.

This Friday night’s game against the Storm at AAMI Park will be the second time the Panthers have faced Melbourne this season. The last time they met, back in Round 13, Penrith were thrashed 20-0 and Campbell-Gillard left the field with a broken finger.

Remarkably, Campbell-Gillard is the only member of Penrith’s first grade line-up to play every single game this season, with not even a broken pinky finger enough to keep him out.

“The break was bad and I had to have surgery but I was lucky we had a bye in between and I kind of twisted the surgeon’s arm to let me play the next game, which I did,” he said.

“I still haven’t got full range back as yet but that’ll take time because of all the scar tissue.”

To make matters worse for the frontrower and his teammates, the Storm will be celebrating inspirational captain Cameron Smith’s 300th first grade on the night, which will no doubt give them extra motivation to post up another big win.

“I didn’t have a clue it was his 300th to be honest. Congratulations to him but we’re here to do a job and get the two points,” Campbell-Gillard declared.

PANTHERS LOOK FOR THREE IN A ROW AFTER EASILY DEFEATING THE ROOSTERS

LATE LAPSE IN CONCENTRATION AGAIN PROVES COSTLY AHEAD OF BRUISING BULLDOGS CLASH

It seems not much can stop Penrith’s high flying Holden Cup team after they easily disposed of the Sydney Roosters 44-30 last Saturday afternoon.

Penrith’s match-up against the Roosters was the first of three grades played at Pepper Stadium that afternoon, with the crowd arriving nice and early to see the competition leaders in action.

The Panthers gave the home crowd something to cheer for early, scoring after just two minutes of play through Dylan Edwards. The fullback converted his own try to put Penrith in front 6-0.

It took just minutes for the Roosters to hit straight back, with winger Joseph Manu scoring in the corner to make it 6-4.

But despite the Roosters’ best efforts, the rest of the half belonged predominantly to Penrith with Corey Waddell, Fuimanu Enese and Braidon Burns each scoring a try to put their side well in front at half-time 22-8.

When the teams hit the field for the second half, it was the home side who continued their rampaging run, scoring two tries in the opening 10 minutes.

Penrith’s mid-season stumble continued with its second consecutive loss at the hands of the Wyong Roos, in what was an absorbing clash at Pepper Stadium.

In a complete contrast to the first encounter, it was Wyong who played from in front for the majority of the clash only for Penrith to seemingly snatch the win through a try to Chris Smith with five minutes remaining, before a lapse of concentration in defence again proved to be Penrith’s undoing with Chris Centrone scoring a blistering 50 metre try to seal the win for the Roos three minutes later.

With both sides having scored four tries a piece, goal-kicking again proved crucial as Penrith’s Adrian Davis and Will Smith both struggled with the boot, kicking just two goals between them.

Penrith were brave in defeat having finished the game with no bench after injuries to Moses Leota (bruised bicep – 1-2 weeks), Geoff Daniela (dislocated shoulder), Ben Murdoch-Masila (concussion) and Robert Jennings (elbow).

But Wyong’s victory was well deserved given their defence stood tall in the second half after the Panthers significantly dominated possession and territorial advantage.

The Roos led 18-8 at half time.

With the Panthers well out in front 34-8, they continued to apply pressure with Thomson Tuigimala next to cross the stripe.

The Roosters finally got on the board in the second half following a great individual effort from Johnny TuivasaSheck, but his try was all in vein with Penrith’s Braidon Burns getting his second of the afternoon not long after.

With Penrith comfortably out in front 44-12, they decided to take their usual ‘cat nap’, which resulted in the Roosters crossing for four unanswered tries in the final 10 minutes, to make the final score a little more respectable.

Penrith will now look for three in a row when they take on the Melbourne Storm this Friday evening at AAMI Park.

The loss has allowed the New Zealand Warriors to join Penrith at the top of the table on 26 points but Penrith’s superior for and against still sees them in the top spot for now, as they turn their attention to this Saturday afternoon’s 3pm clash with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at Belmore Sports Ground.

The resurgent fifth-placed Bulldogs, despite having lost their past four games to the Panthers, are still another side that the Panthers struggle with at this level.

They will be confident coming into this clash having won 30-26 over fellow top eight aspirants Newtown, and this week’s Bulldogs team has a settled look about them with 14 of the 17 named having played in that narrow loss to Penrith way back in Round 1, including 11 players with NRL experience.

The likes of Chase Stanley, Jacob Loko and Corey Thompson will be looking to capitalise from any opportunities created by their tough pack of forwards led

by Antonio Kaufusi, Lloyd Perrett and Damien Cook.

By comparison, Penrith only have eight players returning for this return fixture illustrating just how much injuries have ravaged the Panthers across all grades in 2015.

olores ‘Dee Dee’ Kenniebrew wasn’t even out of her teens yet when she was invited to become part of the girl group ‘The Crystals’. By 1963, before Dee Dee turned 20, the group had two hit records with singles including ‘Da Doo Ron Ron (When He Walked Me Home)’ and ‘Then He Kissed Me’.

“We were so young,” Dee Dee said of those early years.

“Everything was new, everything came in a flood and nothing was really expected.”

Dee Dee said it was a surreal experience.

“We didn’t realise what we were in to.

We didn’t realise that it was a career, we didn’t realise it was a business. It was just fun and games because we all were still home with our parents,” she said.

The group, which consisted of Dee Dee, Barbara Alston, Myrna Giraud, Mary Thomas and Patricia ‘Patsy’ Wright, teamed up with legendary producer Phil Spector after being formed by Benny Wells, who was Barbara’s uncle and a former big band musician.

“Good music is good music. It’s not by sight, it’s by sound”

It was an incredible time for Dee Dee, who was still in school while also being a member of one of the most popular 60s girl groups.

To manage schooling and life in the spotlight, Dee Dee went to a private school that catered especially for students who were working in show business and couldn’t keep a regular schedule.

Her fellow students included some very high profile names.

“I was in school with people like Patty Duke, who was doing ‘The Miracle Worker’ on Broadway,” Dee Dee said.

“I graduated the year Gregory Hines was our class president. Everybody was in show business that was in that school.

“It was a fun way to go to school but it wasn’t the easiest way because we went away on tour and we had to take our work with us.”

While it was a struggle to juggle the work and performing, Dee Dee feels it was worth it for the experiences she had as a teen.

“By the time I was 17 I’d already gone to England to do a tour over there and I’d been to Canada, and these were things I never would have done at that age,” she said.

“We had experiences that I wish I realised that it was going to be my life’s work because I would have taken so much more care to take more pictures, to jot down more memories, to save more programs.

“To keep anything for posterity just never occurred to us, that’s how green we were.”

One of the standout memories for Dee Dee was performing alongside all male group The Coasters, who headlined The Crystals’ very first show.

“We were so in awe of all of the acts because we had seen these acts on TV, on ‘The Dick Clark Show’ and stuff like that,” Dee Dee said.

“So we were in awe of them, we didn’t realise we were one of them. We didn’t become one of them till later but we never really got a big head about that kind of stuff.”

On Friday, July 24 The Crystals will be heading to the Evan Theatre at Penrith Panthers along with iconic Aussie performer Ray Burgess and rock ‘n’ roll band The Allstars.

Being the only founding member left with the group, Dee Dee has seen a change in audiences over the decades but recognises that there’s still a strong market for the music of the 50s, 60s and 70s.

And it’s not just on the legends circuit that this is evident.

Dee Dee also mentions artists like Bruno Mars, Tony Bennett and Adele to demonstrate that there’s still plenty of influence from this era in the current musical landscape.

“I’m very happy that some good music is still getting out there and it’s not about whether you’re slim or whether you look this way or whether you’re that age,” she said.

“Good music is good music. It’s not by sight, it’s by sound.”

‘The Crystals – And Then He Kissed Me’ will be on at Evan Theatre on Friday, July 24 at 8pm. Tickets are $41.55.

n initiative for Aussies to help those suffering in Nepal, support for families of children in longterm hospital care, development of a peer to peer school tutoring program and enabling children with special needs to perform a dance eisteddfod.

Just a few of the ways local year 11 students have been making their community even better.

At 5pm, Wednesday 22 July, Penrith RSL will host the 2015 Max Potential Showcase, an inspiring evening that will highlight what 18 Year 11 students and their coaches have achieved in their personal lives and in their community.

A journey that began in February will this month reach its end, leaving a wake of lives changed and community improvement. 18 students from 4 schools have paired up with coaches from Penrith’s business and non-for-profit community to develop their abilities to set goals and achieve them. Students have each worked on a personal goal along with a community service project. Guests at the Max Potential Showcase will be able to wander around stalls individually created by each student to capture their personal journey and community involvement.

Everyone is welcome to attend the 2015 Max Potential Showcase, 5pm, 22 July at Penrith RSL.

hen Aussie jazz icon James Morrison calls you ‘the greatest gift to Australian jazz vocals’ you know you’re doing something right.

Vocalist Emma Pask was discovered

by Morrison at the age of 16 and has now been performing alongside the music great and his band for over 20 years.

How did the idea for an Australian version of ‘Pawn Stars’ come about?

Aaron: We’ve been watching the American ‘Pawn Stars’ since day one and always loved the show – we often sat back and thought how similar those guys were to the three of us. We were approached

by Leftfield Pictures (US production company) to see if we would be interested in doing an Australian series and we got confirmation in January 2014. There was a bit of an auditioning process to go through but they liked us best.

What’s the strangest item you’ve ever had in the store?

Shanon: A guy rang up the other day wanting to sell his leg! I started to giggle but the guy was dead set serious. His leg was amputated 21 years ago after a mining accident and it’s been on display in a museum for a number of years. When I explained to him that it was illegal to trade human body parts, he got mad with me.

‘Pawn Stars’ has such a huge following around the world, how do you think fans will react to an Australian version?

Ben: We’re very positive about the show and think it will be well received by the Australian public. We don’t want to compete with the guys in Vegas, that’s a very different audience over there. We are who we are, we are the real thing and we are very proud of what we have created and built over the years. It’s a great show, it’s very entertaining and fingers crossed the public will like it.

What was it like heading to Las Vegas to film those promos with Rick Harrison from the American ‘Pawn Stars’?

Ben: I’d never been to Vegas before but I thought it was fantastic! The Gold and Silver Pawn Shop was interesting to see, although it’s a lot smaller than it appears on TV. Rick and his staff were very welcoming and he came in especially to meet us. We spent a few hours in the store filming with Rick and it was a fun experience.

Do you expect the Happy Hockers store at Bondi Beach (where the show is filmed) to explode in popularity when the show airs?

Shanon: We do expect more people to visit the store after the show has aired but our stores have always been busy regardless. We’ve been around a long time and have a good reputation with our customers.

Have you always had interesting items come into the store or only since the TV show came about?

Ben: We’ve always had a good reputation for interesting, collectable items because that’s who we are as well, and our customers know that. We’ve always dealt with the weird, wacky and wonderful, but I guess it’s been amplified due to

the show, so we are getting a lot more of that kind of stuff in.

Aaron: The approach we’ve taken is to have an ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ which brings people in to look at interesting items and then we can maybe sell them a guitar or something like that.

CINEMA Magic Mike XXL

Rated MA // KATE REID In ‘Magic Mike XXL’ it’s been three years since Mike left strip group the Kings of Tampa. But after a phone call from the guys inviting him to a stripper convention, he decides to join them for one final performance.

The beauty of this film is that it doesn’t try to be something it’s not.

This is quite simply a film about a group of guys who like to entertain women and make them feel special.

And it’s clear that the women enjoy it just as much as the men do. And why wouldn’t they; have you seen Joe Manganiello and Channing Tatum with their shirts off?

Beyond the physical it’s really hard not to warm to these lovable characters. There’s a great sense of camaraderie amongst the group

who support each other rather than becoming too competitive.

‘Magic Mike XXL’ should also be commended for the way it highlights female sexuality. It’s nice to see a story that embraces the fact that women like pleasure just as much as men do. It’s also great to see more badass female characters like strip club owner Rome (Jada Pinkett Smith), plus a cast of female audience members that cover a diverse range of ages, races and body types.

‘Magic Mike XXL’ is pretty much the film equivalent of junk food. It’s not going to provide you with a huge amount of nourishment but it’s just so damn delicious!

Nina Simone Revisited: A Tribute to Nina Simone KATE REID To celebrate the documentary ‘What Happened, Miss Simone?’ Grammy Award-winning jazz musician Robert Glasper and singer Lauryn Hill have created a compilation album that sees a host of contemporary artists covering the tracks of singer, songwriter and civil rights activist Nina Simone.

The album features artists like Usher, Mary J. Blige, Jazmine Sullivan, Common, Gregory Porter and Grace. There’s also an appearance by Lisa Simone, Nina Simone’s daughter.

Tracks include ‘I Put A Spell on You’, ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’ and ‘Love Me or Leave Me.’ But the majority of the tracks are sung by the hugely talented Lauryn Hill, who perfectly embodies the sound of Simone.

This is a must have album for any fan of Nina Simone.

Alien race the Boov are under attack and as the universe’s great hiders are once again looking for a new planet to inhabit.

This time it’s Earth’s turn to play host to these odd little creatures.

To clear their new home, the Boov relocate the human population but there’s

one small problem, a young girl named Tip (Rihanna) has managed to avoid capture and is now on a mission to find her mum.

On her journey she runs into Oh (Jim Parsons), who is also on the run after making a mistake that could destroy Earth and the Boov.

While the film starts out a little light on the laughs, it does gain momentum towards the second half. Unlike other animations of its kind, ‘Home’ is a little more suited to younger audiences than

it is to adults. That being said there’s still plenty to love about this flick, especially the well meaning and seriously cute Oh, voiced perfectly by ‘The Big Bang Theory’ star Jim Parsons.

The film’s supporting cast includes big names like Steve Martin as Captain Smek, head of the Boov, and Jennifer Lopez as Tip’s mum Lucy.

‘Home’ is a fun, original and visually stunning animation.

inemaker at Mr Mick Wines in the Clare Valley, Tim Adams and his wife Pam Goldsack (the company’s General Manager) were on the money when several visits to Sardinia had them thinking that a popular variety there, Vermentino would do well in their warm Clare Valley climate.

And so quickly was their first-production Vermentino snapped-up a year ago, it encouraged them to “really get behind the variety and increase the make” in coming years… so that now they’ve just released a 2015 that really hits the spot.

Modelled in classic Italian style – Vermentino’s a mainstay in Liguria in the country’s north-west and Sardinia in its south, as well as in near-neighbouring (French) Corsica – the fruit for this true-blue Aussie Mr Mick Vermentino was sourced from a single vineyard in the south of the Clare Valley, and which has given the wine wonderful apple and nashi pear flavours Excellent as a pre-dinner tipple on its own, at $17 a bottle from fine wine retailers you’ll find it a beaut match as well with pork loin chops with a quince paste, and oven-baked.

One to note: Eden Hall did the right thing with their 2013 Block 4 Eden Valley Shiraz that they released only late last year, giving the wine nearly two years in French oak and more than another year in bottle before that release.

That cellaring’s made it a very rewarding drop with a subtle nose of spice, white pepper and chocolate, and out of the glass fills the mouth with nicely fleshy red and black fruit flavours, lovely balance and velvety tannins.

One to enjoy now with grilled beef ribs, duck or game dishes, it is well worth the $40rrp.

Alternative/Folk WHAT GOT YOU INTO MUSIC: I’ve been raised in quite a musical family, particularly on my mum’s side. Having said that though, both of my parents are very musical. Mum was good at music theory and dad played guitar quite well. When I was a young child, perhaps even a baby, dad always had a guitar in his hands, playing songs by Dire Straits or The Angels and more. I used to sit in awe watching him play, wishing I could get my hands on that guitar of his!

INFLUENCES: The 80s, particularly Australian 80s. Missy Higgins plays a significant role in that she has inspired me to write songs and be confident.

Vocally she has also taught me a fair bit, as has Pat Benatar.

Warming up a cold night in Penrith Even the cold weather wasn’t enough to keep the crowds away from the Peachtree Hotel on Friday, July 10 where guests celebrated the end of the working week with a lineup of some of the best DJs on the scene.

Oakes & Lennox, Danny B, Devrell and Wy-C and Robbin Banks were all on hand to keep the crowd warm and the party pumping.

There was drinks a-plenty and rugged up patrons all enjoying good company and great music at one of Penrith’s favourite night spots.

The Peachtree has certainly gained a reputation of being the “place to be” on a Friday night.

An incision is made into the skin and muscles of the abdomen and both the uterus and ovaries are surgically removed.

In male dogs and cats, both testicles are removed via a small incision.

Desexing has the advantage of preventing unwanted pregnancies and also has several medical benefits.

In females it lowers the chances of mammary cancers by up to 90 per cent.

Desexing females also prevents a life threatening life uterine infection known as pyometron.

In males, desexing prevents testicular cancer and also decreases the chances of developing an enlarged prostate gland which can be painful and uncomfortable.

The primary disadvantage of desexing is weight gain.

Once cats and dogs have been desexed they have less of the sex hormone and this causes a decrease in their metabolic rate.

We generally recommend that food intake is decreased by approximately 10 per cent after desexing to avoid weight gain.

Occasionally an animal with behavioural problems may benefit from not being desexed as a decrease in their hormones may worsen their behavioural problems.

Most of us are aware that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but with our busy modern lives it often gets overlooked, whether it be because of the morning rush or just a bad habit that’s developed over time. I myself have struggled with eating in the mornings and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

fat snacks before midday which isn’t the best option when it comes to health. In fact, research has shown that those who skip breakfast are more likely to be overweight or obese than those who eat breakfast regularly.

What’s a personal trainer worth an hour?

That’s a bit like saying, what’s a house worth?

There are a lot of variables, and just like houses, some are underpriced and some are overpriced.

If a trainer has just started working and every client gets the same weights circuit every session while they yell ‘two more’, you wouldn’t expect to pay the same amount as for someone with a lot more experience who covers all the components of getting someone really healthy.

Don’t be surprised when you have headaches every night because your poor neck and traps are trying to pull against those tight chest and abs all day trying to keep your head up.

Does your trainer get ongoing education? This will affect their rate.

So there is no set amount.

If you think your trainer is expensive for what they offer, try a different one. If you are looking around, don’t be afraid to try a couple out.

he Penrith Rams should have the best vision of any sporting team in the area after the local Aussie Rules club were announced as a recipient of the OPSM Sports Vision for Clubs program.

Now in its second year, OPSM selected 15 Aussie Rules clubs from around the country to be part of the program which assists clubs both on and away from the footy field.

The Rams were part of a record number of entrants to apply to be included in the Sports Vision for Clubs program, which saw them receive $1000 worth of Sherrin footballs plus $1000 cash as well as eye screenings from local optometrists for their players, coaches, members and supporters at weekly training sessions.

“We were ecstatic to be selected as part of the Sports Vision for Clubs program,” Penrith Rams Chairman, Greg Corless said.

“We rely on a lot of community support to allow this club to operate, and it’s wonderful that we were able to receive assistance from OPSM to assist our entire club.”

Emily Dawe from OPSM said the Sports Vision for Clubs program would not only benefit the players with their training, but would assist the entire club this season and beyond.

“Local footy clubs play a key role in the community, and it is great that OPSM could get on board and help out some fantastic clubs with cash and playing equipment to help them achieve their full potential,” she said.

“On top of this, many of the players and support staff were able to have their vision screened by their local OPSM eye care specialist, which will help people realise if their vision is as good as it can be.”

Ms Dawe added that it was important for anyone who plays football or any sport for that matter, to take care of their eye sight.

“Taking care of your vision will benefit players on the field and will help them to enjoy their football longer,” she said.

Emus finally have a reason to smile Emus break 15 match losing streak with thrilling draw against arch rivals Parramatta NATHAN TAYLOR

he Penrith Emus no longer have to look at the Shute Shield ladder and see a big fat zero next to their name, following their 34-all draw with Parramatta last weekend.

Saturday’s draw against the lowly Two Blues was the first time this season that Penrith left a game with premiership points, having lost their previous 15 matches.

After a season full of negative headlines and horrible scorelines, Emus coach Sateki Tu’ipulotu said he was relieved with the positive result.

“I’m very happy and proud of the players for digging deep,” he told the Weekender.

“We should have won the game by 20 points but the referee’s calls didn’t go our way.”

Leading 24-14 at half-time, the Emus lost three players during the game to yellow cards, which saw their opposition take full advantage.

“We played with 14 men for 30 minutes of the game, the referee should’ve just gave the game to Parramatta,” Tu’ipulotu said.

34-29 before the ref gave Parramatta five penalties on the trot and they scored in the corner.”

Fortunately for Penrith, Parramatta’s goal kicker wasn’t able to convert the last minute try, which saw both clubs share the points.

“He wasn’t kicking good all day, so I knew he would miss,” Tu’ipulotu admitted.

“It’s just disappointing because the boys deserved the win. A draw is a draw but a win would’ve been much better.”

Meanwhile, Tu’ipulotu has responded to reports that there a preliminary plans in place by NSW Rugby to merge both the struggling Penrith and Parramatta clubs next season.

A review into the state of rugby in western Sydney has been underway for some time now, with an idea floated by NSW Rugby’s senior development officer Michael Doyle, to merge the two clubs and create the Western Sydney Two Blues and base them at Blacktown.

“It’s only speculation at this stage but we’re not very happy,” Tu’ipulotu said.

“I’ve left it with our president Jim Hook and the board and I’m sure, with guns blazing, Penrith will stay in the Shute Shield.”

he Western Sydney Wanderers are continuing the club’s Spanish Revolution with the recent appointment of experienced coach Andrés Carrasco to Tony Popovic’s coaching staff.

With UEFA Pro Licence and enviable coaching credentials, Carrasco is set to add significant expertise to the Wanderers’ backroom staff.

Wanderers CEO, John Tsatsimas, said he was pleased with the opportunity to bring the Spaniard Down Under.

“Andrés has a fantastic pedigree and has a proven track record in the development of players that was nurtured during his 15 years with the FC Barcelona Academy,” he said.

“Andrés will bring his rich level of experience to the club and I know that he will add to the group and the culture in a very positive way.”

Carrasco began his coaching career at the famed FC Barcelona Academy from 1988 to 2011 working with age groups U8, U13 and U15 before becoming Coordinator of the Football 7 department.

n appearances Shawn Blore looks as though he could mix it with the big boys of rugby league tomorrow. He certainly has the height, build and skill but there’s only one problem – he’s still only 14-years-old.

While appearances may be deceiving, Shawn’s rugby league talent is far from it.

Recently, after competing for NSW in the Australian 15 Years Championships at St Marys, Shawn was selected in the U15 Australian Secondary Schools Merit side.

While the Australian team don’t play any official games until they reach U18’s level, Shawn was very proud to be wearing the green and gold regardless.

“The jersey is more of an award for playing well but this is my greatest achievement so far,” he told the Weekender.

“When my name got announced I couldn’t believe it, I was shocked. My family was also very proud of me.”

anthers – a joint venture between the Penrith District, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury City Netball Associations – has been awarded a licence in the upcoming Netball NSW Premier League (NNSWPL) competition.

The NNSWPL, which will commence in April 2016, is a new competition to attract the best current and emerging talent within NSW. Its purpose is to offer a local, elite platform for players, coaches, officials and administrators, and provide bridging opportunities into the Australian Netball League (ANL) and subsequent ANZ Championship.

Three years ago, Netball NSW commenced an extensive review of its High Performance programs, with the inclusion of such an elite competition in its pathway seen as a priority in the organisation’s vision of producing State and Australian representatives.

“With participation and interest in netball at an all-time high, the introduction of the Netball NSW Premier League is an exciting development for the sport within NSW,” Netball NSW CEO and NNSWPL Commissioner, Carolyn Campbell said.

A pre-season tournament is scheduled from March 2-23, followed by the commencement of the 14 week regular season from April 18.

All games in the NNSWPL will be played at Netball Central at Sydney Olympic Park.

After a robust application process, carried out by the NNSWPL Commission, eight franchises were granted an initial two-year NNSWPL licence.
