t’s the political party she once served with passion and pride, but now Jackie Kelly says she’s quitting the Liberals.

Serving as the MP for Lindsay for over 11 years during the Howard Government, including as Minister for Sports and Minister for Tourism, Ms Kelly revealed to the Weekender she no longer believes the Liberal Party is the democratic party it used to be.

“I have been a continuous member since 1995 and believe I have made an enormous contribution to the Party. Therefore I do not take this action without very careful consideration,” she said.

“Since my retirement from paid politics I have been a part of the reform process for the Liberal Party’s volunteers who want a voice in their local area; grassroots Party members who join to be a part of the decisions that effect them in their everyday lives.

“Unfortunately the reform process has stalled yet again.”

Ms Kelly said that she has “held her tongue” for some time “in the interest of Party unity” but is fed up with the Party ignoring the concerns of residents. She said that concerns over Badgerys Creek airport and roads infrastructure had been completely ignored by the Party.

Help from the air as fire danger season arrives CASSANDRA O’CONNOR

spectacular display of fire fighting capacity was put on last week at the Sydney International Regatta Centre to mark the beginning of the bushfire season.

The NSW and Federal Governments have leased fire fighting air-cranes ‘Ichabod’ and ‘Gypsy Lady’ a month early to complement the state’s fleet of fire fighting aircraft.

Last Friday, Ichabod flew into Penrith and demonstrated how it can hold some 9,000 litres of water and refill its tanks in just under 60 seconds.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Stuart Ayres said the NSW Rural Fire Service was pleased to again welcome both helicopter air-cranes to boost the aerial water-bombing capability of the RFS this summer.

“If you hear these air-cranes flying overhead then you know that these are angels sent to save us,” Mr Ayres said.

“They have the ability to save your house by dropping 9,000 litres onto a fire accurately. This means we have the air support to match the support of our fire fighters on the ground.”

He added that the air-cranes had been in Greece recently fighting fires there

and would be made available to any fire emergency across the country. They will be based however at Bankstown airport.

Deputy Commissioner of the RFS, Rob Rogers said that the air-cranes would provide vital support to the 100 or so other fire fighting aircraft in the RFS’s armory.

“It’s about getting to fires quickly and hitting them hard,” he said.

“There are some fires, such as those caused by remote lightning strikes that ground crews cannot reach but these aircraft can reach these fires early.”

He said that the weather conditions this year have been more favourable than last year, when 200 homes were damaged in the Blue Mountains bushfires.

“It only takes a few hot days though and the bush is ready again to burn,” he said.

The air-cranes were leased a month earlier than normal as a precaution.

Commonwealth Minister for Justice Michael Keenan said the Australian Government was committed to helping fund the annual costs of specialised fire fighting aircraft through the National Aerial Fire Fighting Arrangements.

“The Commonwealth is investing $14.8 million over 2014/15 to ensure Australians are protected by the best aerial fire fighting equipment possible,” Mr Keenan said.

This cooperative arrangement has been in place for the last 11 years.

Supermarket giant Woolworths learnt a very important public relations lesson this week.

It’s a new entry into the PR handbook, which reads something like, ‘one shall not give undue credence to social media outrage’.

You see, Woolworths this week apologised for stocking a t-shirt that only the Greens and a minority of the Twitterverse could possibly find offensive. Actually, maybe the ABC, too.

The shirt, with an Australian flag and the words ‘If you don’t love it, leave’, was on sale at two of the supermarket’s stores in Sydney and Cairns.

A bloke by the name of George Craig, who claims he was on a footy trip with mates when he spotted the shirt, declared it racist.

(Ah yes, the highlight of every footy trip, trawling the isles of Woolworths for good quality singlets and undies for the weekend).

George, who has a whopping 158 followers on Twitter even after his ‘viral’ Tweet of the so-called racist shirt and appears to have a rather unhealthy obsession with ‘Seinfeld’, sparked those who love to pounce on pretend outrage into action.

The ABC reported that “dozens of people” took to the Woolworths Facebook page to criticise the supermarket giant over the singlet.

Dozens? Yep, that’s correct.

But among the dozens, there’s hundreds if not thousands of other posts condemning Woolworths for removing the shirt from the shelves.

In the process, they are slamming the apology Woolworths produced.

Oh yes, that apology. Wow. “It has come to our attention that two Woolworths stores were inadvertently stocking a singlet that we consider totally unacceptable,” a spokesman said.

“The singlet was not one we ordered. It was delivered to us in error and should never [have] been allowed on our shelves. We will review

As the mainstream media picked up the story, it was pretty obvious that most of us didn’t see what all the fuss was about.

But Woolworths had fallen for that relatively new trick – social media outrage.

You see, some PR folk think that hashtags are more important than letters to the editor, Facebook likes are more critical than evening TV news ratings and retweets are much more indicative of the thoughts of the public than talkback radio announcers or callers.

They respond to social media criticism because they feel they are being bombarded, when in reality, the numbers don’t add up to widespread criticism and certainly don’t warrant the removal of the shirt or the apology that followed.

Anyone who has ever been the victim of racism must be shaking their heads right now trying to figure out what all this uproar is about.

Many in the community have experienced terrible and unacceptable racism, racism that should be called out and stopped by all of us.

How sad it is that in 2014, we live in a country that brands a t-shirt that patriotically says ‘If you don’t love it, leave’ as racist. How sad is it that if you put a flag pole in your front yard with the Aussie flag flying, you’ll probably be considered a racist, not a proud Australian.

What’s sadder though is that the communities we think are offended by all of this, very rarely say a word. Why? Because they too can’t understand what all the fuss is about.

If you really want a story about people being unfairly treated, perhaps have a look at the real story behind Woolworths’ cheap milk and bread and the people it threatens to destroy.

Now there’s an apology worth giving.

he NSW and Federal Governments have announced they will jointly fund the Werrington Arterial and have the road completed in 2016.

The NSW Government announced over a year ago that it would fund half of the Claremont Meadows project, which is expected to cost between $70 million and $90 million.

Now, Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Jamie Briggs says further funding will be provided to create the new link road between the Great Western Highway and M4 along Gipps Street. “A new north-south corridor will give the St Marys industrial area better access to the major freight routes, which will support jobs and help cater for western Sydney’s growing population,� Mr Briggs said. “Tenders to build the project have now been called from prequalified contractors until Wednesday, November 12. It means work is on track to start early next year and be completed in 2016.�

Vehicles tackle growing issue Obesity crisis leads to implementation of bigger ambulances across Sydney

“These vehicles are an important investment as they deliver benefits for both patients and paramedics.”

Mrs Skinner said in the past financial year 1,261 transports were undertaken by MPV specialist ambulances – an increase of 16 per cent on the previous year.

“Clearly there is demand for these services and this is about ensuring the right resources are available for patients with extra needs,” Mrs Skinner said.

Senior Assistant Commissioner Michael Homden, Executive Director of Operational Logistics at NSW Ambulance, welcomed the addition of new ambulances to the growing MPV fleet.

“The rollout of these specialist ambulances is an example of how NSW Ambulance is providing infrastructure to meet an extensive range of patient needs in the community,” Mr Homden said.

Penrith MP Stuart Ayres welcomed the investment in Penrith’s local ambulance service.

“This is a first for Penrith. NSW Ambulance has trialled these vehicles to test their abilities and now we have seven new MPV general ambulances across the state with one here in Penrith,” Mr Ayres said this week.

enrith Ambulance Station is set to receive a new vehicle that will cater to patients with special needs.

Health Minister Jillian Skinner announced seven new Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) general ambulances will be distributed across the state to support paramedics and patients.

“MPV general ambulances have the capability to transport patients who weigh up to 300 kilograms and the space and equipment to ensure they can be supported by paramedics during transport,” Mrs Skinner said.

“The new vehicles, which have a fit out value of $152,000 each, ensure paramedics have the right support in place to provide emergency care to patients. They are equipped with mechanical aids in the lifting and management of patients to reduce health and safety risks.”

Penrith will receive one of the vehicles.

“An added bonus of the new MPV general ambulances is they can be used for nonbariatric transport too,” Mrs Skinner said.

“These new vehicles complement the investment we have made in MPV specialist ambulances, which are capable of

Police snapshot Castlereagh: Offenders caught thanks to public

Three men are to appear before court after two police officers were assaulted at a local licensed venue last week. At about 10.30pm on Friday, October 10, Penrith Local Area Command officers were patrolling the premises on Peachtree Road, Penrith, when they allegedly intervened in a fight between a man and security staff. It is alleged that two other men became involved and the officers called for urgent assistance. The three men were arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station. A male and a female constable received injuries as a result of the incident, with the male constable taken to Nepean Hospital due to facial injuries. A 25-year-old man, a 19-year-old and a 26-year-old were all charged over the incident. All three will appear in court on November 5.

The community is being praised for their vigilance after their assistance led to the speedy capture of three people allegedly involved in an aggravated break and enter. At about 10.50am on Monday, the occupants of a home on Post Office Road, Castlereagh left their home. It is alleged that a number of people went inside the home after they had left and set off the alarm before leaving. They returned later and allegedly broke into the home, stealing property. Police were contacted by witnesses who saw the alleged offenders leaving the home and were able to provide police with accurate descriptions. A Highway Patrol officer saw the alleged offenders in a vehicle and gave chase, stopping them on Cranebrook Road.

Erskine Park: Man charged over 2010 home invasion

Jamisontown: Mum in shock after toddler snatched

A local man has been arrested over a 2010 home invasion in Hillsdale. At about 11.45pm on Thursday, December 2, 2010, five men broke into a Hillsdale unit armed with weapons. The male occupant was allegedly assaulted and property inside the unit was damaged. There were three children and a woman in the home at the time. A 32-yearold man from Erskine Park was arrested over the incident on Thursday, October 9.

He was charged with ‘special aggravated break, enter’ and ‘commit serious indictable offence’. He was granted conditional bail and will appear in court on Wednesday, November 5.

A mother is in shock after her toddler was snatched from a vehicle by another woman, who has been charged with the attempted abduction. At about 1pm on Saturday, October 11, a woman placed her three-yearold girl into a car seat in her car parked on Nungeroo Avenue, Jamisontown. She turned away and police allege a 31-year-old woman approached her car, took the child from the seat and began to walk away from the scene. The girl’s mother ran after the woman and took back her child. It is alleged that the other woman became aggressive and was detained by passers by until police arrived.

enrith City Council is in a tizzy over its stationery after ‘No Airport at Badgerys Creek’ logos were removed from correspondence such as envelopes.

Cr Kevin Crameri raised the issue at Council’s Policy Review meeting on Monday and said that the logo should be immediately reinstated.

“When did we stop using that logo on Council stationery and why,” he asked in frustration.

There were suggestions from fellow Councillors that the logo could be changed to ‘no 24-hour airport at Badgerys Creek’ but that idea was dismissed in case it gave the impression that a limited hours airport was supported by Council.

Cr Crameri found support in Cr Marcus Cornish and Cr John Thain. Cr Thain said he was annoyed an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the airport still had not been released.

“We have certainly been patient with the EIS and yet every week there seems to be new announcements on the airport and no EIS,” he said.

“Quite frankly I am sick and tired of waiting for an EIS to come out.”

Councillor Kevin Crameri has long held concerns about Badgerys Creek Airport Cr Crameri agreed: “We need to know the alignment as, if the runways are north-south, then Penrith will definitely be affected.”

Mayor Ross Fowler agreed that an urgent report was required to update

Council on the Badgerys Creek airport and also the stationery matter.

A spokesperson for Council said the logo’s use was ceased after the then incumbent Federal Government ruled out Badgerys Creek as an airport option.

Werrington Arterial This week’s announcement calling for tenders to construct the Werrington Arterial is very pleasing. The arterial is the ‘missing link’ for many residents and businesses and one which has been on Council’s advocacy program for a number of years.

The project will create a new link between the Great Western Highway and the M4 Motorway by widening Kent Road and Gipps Street into a four lane dual carriageway. It will provide will an important connection between major western Sydney road networks for the Penrith region, linking the University of Western Sydney, the Penrith Health and Education Precinct (PHEP), the Werrington Enterprise, Living and Learning (WELL) Precinct and existing residential estates.

Links to the M4 motorway will open up new transport corridors to alleviate the strain on Mamre and The Northern Roads by offering additional access to and from the motorway.

It will also allow greater connectivity to the Dunheved Business Park, which has seen growth recently with local manufacturing businesses being awarded contracts of national and global significance.

Access to new employment areas will receive a boost with the completion of the arterial. Werrington Corporate Park due for completion in 2015, will gain greater access, with the precinct having the capacity to generate 6,000 ‘knowledge jobs of the future’ in areas such as health, engineering, digital communications and education.

We are looking forward, with great anticipation, to seeing the creation of the western Sydney we have planned and advocated for many years. One that has good roads, good jobs and support for the people who choose to live in one of the fastest growing regions in Australia.

Neighbours try in vain to save family’s home

A

Cambridge Park home was completely destroyed last week after a fire ripped through the property.

Emergency services were called to Michelle Avenue, Cambridge Park, at 10.17am on Friday, October 10, after a large number of ‘000’ calls alerted them to a house fire.

Upon arrival, the three bedroom house was found well alight. The fire was contained and extinguished at around 10.45am however not before the house was almost totally destroyed.

Fire and Rescue NSW recorded that 50 per cent of the house’s structure was completely destroyed and around 90 per cent of the home’s contents were destroyed.

Neighbours rallied together with their garden hoses in an attempt to put out the blaze before fire crews arrived at the scene.

“I was working inside and I heard a crackling noise. I went outside and I saw some minor flames on the outside of the house. Then we [the neighbours] grabbed some hoses, as many hoses as we could and we started spraying,” said one man who has lived nearby the family of five for around 10 years.

The resident said that it is common for the local community to band together to help each other.

“I had no emotions at all, it was pretty calm, we were just thinking ‘put the fire out’. If we had more water, we would have beaten it,” he said.

Residents also voiced complaints over the length of time it took for fire crews to respond to the incident, saying that they took too long to get to the scene of the fire.

A NSW Fire and Rescue spokesperson said that 20 fire fighters and one officer from Dunheved, Cranebrook, Mt Druitt and Penrith attended the scene well within their benchmark times.

n an attempt to lower the alarmingly high number of house fires and related fatalities across the state, a partnership between Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) and the RSL and Service Clubs Association was launched last week.

The community partnership, launched

by Minister for Police and Emergency Services Stuart Ayres and FRNSW Commissioner Greg Mullins, at Penrith RSL on Friday, October 10, will ensure as many members of the community as possible are aware of how to keep their homes safe from fire.

“We get out there and we talk to the school kids, we go to nursing homes, we get out there in the community... but we have learnt that we can’t reach everybody and not everybody will listen, so we need to partner with other organisations,” Mr Mullins said.

“When we partner with organisations, we know that we are getting a message across. I never want to see another fire fatality because I have seen too many.”

People who are elderly, single parents, smokers and drinkers are those who are most at risk of accidental fires in the home and many people in this demographic also

attend local clubs. Through the partnership, club patrons will come face to face with fire safety messages that they may not have come across if they were not involved in the club community.

“Penrith RSL Club has a long history of providing services to our members and the wider community and this program adds another important service. Using our communication channels with our members is an ideal way to alert our members and others of the need for fire safety in the home,” said Penrith RSL Chairman, Neville Barnier.

Statistics show that while house fire rates are still quite high in Penrith and western Sydney, there has been a significant drop in recent years after a focus on prevention.

Mr Ayres said that the partnership could reduce the rates of house fires further.

Students face toughest test High school comes to an end for local students as HSC exams get underway

his week marked the beginning of the end for high school students across the state as some 76,000 students complete their HSC exams.

On Monday, Penrith High School students joined the rest of the state in sitting the first paper of the only compulsory subject, two-unit English, with the second paper sat on Tuesday.

Other exams held this week included PDHPE, Ancient History and Dance.

NSW Premier Mike Baird wished all the students well for the HSC. “The first exam can often be daunting but my message to students is to simply do your best and be proud of the work you have completed,” Mr Baird said.

“The written exams are the final step in attaining a credential that is respected throughout the world.

“Remember, you have already done much of the work which will determine your final HSC result in assessments and tests undertaken during the year.

“It is only natural that you may feel anxious, but there are many pathways to the career or vocation you choose after school.”

enrith Council and Penrith Lakes Development Corporation (PLDC) are participating in conciliation talks over the proposed subdivision of the Penrith Lakes Scheme for residential development.

The talks are being hosted by the Land and Environment Court after Penrith Council knocked back the Corporation’s Development Application to see 138 twohectare allotments created.

On Monday evening, Councillors expressed their concerns that they have not been included in the planning of the Penrith Lakes Scheme.

“It seems like we have been cut out of the discussions on the future of the Lakes Scheme,” said Cr John Thain.

“All the discussions are being held by the NSW Government and the Penrith Lakes Development Corporation.”

Cr Kevin Crameri also expressed concerns about flooding in the area and wanted further information on the Scheme’s future. Mayor Ross Fowler shared their frustrations.

“It is fair to say we have been cut out,” Cr Fowler said.

“PLDC has made every effort to keep Penrith Council officers and Councillors fully informed of progress with the Scheme for many years,” a PLDC spokesperson said.

“It’s important to understand that the whole scheme is being carried out under a Deed of Agreement with the NSW Government.”

The Scheme was classified a ‘State Significant Project’ and as such most of the approvals required are from the NSW Minister for Planning, Pru Goward.

“It is difficult to understand any Councillors saying they feel ‘cut out’ of any process,” the spokesperson continued.

“The most recent process was PLDC’s submission of Development Applications for land rezonings to Council which Councillors considered and rejected.”

According to Council, the application was rejected for a number of reasons, including that some allotments would be affected by two metres to three metres of flooding in a one in one hundred year flood event based on Council’s own flood modelling. Discussions between Council, the Department of Planning and PLDC on future flood impacts is still ongoing.

Penrith Council is hosting a car boot sale at Mamre House on Saturday, October 25. The car boot sale will be held in conjunction with the Garage Sale Trail, which is a national program that promotes sustainability, community, commerce and fun. The day brings together buyers and sellers of unwanted items supporting sustainability practices through their reuse. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said the day is a lot of fun and supports sustainability. “People may wish to sell items they no longer need to others who see real value in them,” Cr Fowler said. “The day keeps items out of landfill by giving them a new lease on life with someone who has a need for it. There will be stalls with fresh, local grown produce, great food, and a treasure trail market of pre-loved items.” The car boot sale will be held between 9am and 12pm with free

entry for buyers. Registration for sellers is $5 plus a refundable $20 bond that will be returned at the end of the market. All registrations include a free hot drink on the day.

Penrith residents are being invited to have their say on the Penrith Development Control Plan (DCP). The DCP provides very detailed planning and design guidelines for local areas.

It complements the broader Local Environmental Plan which defines the land uses for each suburb. Two new sections have been created in Draft Penrith DCP 2014 to support the Penrith Health and Education Precinct and the Riverlink Precinct.

chicken living in the backyard of a suburban St Clair home has been named one of the fittest and healthiest chooks in the

country. ‘Pretty’ the Plymouth Rock is one of the much loved pets owned by the Ellison family, who recognised that she was a particularly healthy, happy chook and entered her in the annual Facebook-run Sustenhance Search for Australia’s Fittest and Healthiest Chook.

The family had to upload photos of Pretty and explain why she is so fit and healthy.

She took out a finalist position and the local family are thrilled. “We hatched her just over a year ago – last spring. I thought we had a pretty good chance at taking out a position but it is very exciting,� said owner, Melissa Ellison.

The two youngest members of the family, Bayleigh and Sophia, are particularly fond of their feathery pets and love to play and cuddle with them.

Mrs Ellison said that chickens are a great family pet. “Having chickens is great. We get eggs, they are great pets for the children and it is something different,� she said.

ednesday was a reverent day at Nepean Hospital as parents and families who have lost a child in pregnancy or infancy converged for a special remembrance ceremony.

The second annual ceremony marked Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day – a day for parents to honour and remember their babies who have passed away from miscarriage, stillbirth, SIDS or postnatal causes.

“Sadly, pregnancy and infant loss touches the lives of many families in our community. Each week a number of families at Nepean Hospital are affected by a loss,” said Nepean Hospital Antenatal Ward Nurse Unit Manager, Shirley Hammond.

Last year, Miriam and Rob Arkwright of Cambridge Park found out that they were pregnant with their second son but at their routine 12-week scan, they learnt that things were not as they should be.

Their baby was diagnosed with a neural tube defect called Anencephaly and the couple were told that he would not survive outside the womb.

They continued with the pregnancy

anyway and Elijah was born on January 3.

“My son was born and passed away two minutes later, so we got to have a little bit of time with him, which was nice,” said Miriam Arkwright.

“It was very surreal. We were excited to see the colour of his eyes, whose hair he had and how chubby he was. I didn’t feel the pain until we had to say goodbye at the hospital. No-one should have to leave hospital without their baby.”

She attended the Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day ceremony this year in memory of Elijah, who is still very much a celebrated part of their family, alongside parents who have been through similar and equally painful experiences in their own lives.

Among them will be one of Mrs Arkwright’s closest friends, Rachel Namoa, who lost a baby at a similar time.

The women bonded over the tragic losses in their lives.

“It’s an extremely important event as it acknowledges and values the lives of our babies and the depth of the family’s grief,” Ms Namoa said.

Ms Arkwright agreed, saying it was fantastic to have support during difficult times.

“It is so amazing to have a collective group of parents meet together who all

o longer will local kids grow up devouring giant Killer Pythons, with the announcement that Nestlé has literally cut the iconic lolly in two.

The original 47g Allen’s Killer Python has been replaced by a new ‘treat-size’ version that reportedly still has the same recipe, taste and stretchiness.

Weighing in at 24 grams, the new python is noticeably smaller – but a smaller size Killer Python means healthier locals, according to Nestlé.

The company made the change as part of its efforts to help people better manage their health by controlling the amount of treats that they eat.

“We’re now offering confectionery with responsibly sourced ingredients, on-pack portion education and changes such as revised portion sizes and resealable packaging,” said Nestlé General Manager – Confectionery, Martin Brown.

“It’s part of helping people improve their nutrition, health and wellness, and underlines our fundamental belief that for a company to be successful, it must also create value for society.”

The reduction in size of Nestlé products will not stop with the Killer Python, which is only the beginning of the company’s healthy living initiative.

But Jasmin Albeck, Manager at High Street lolly shop, Sweet Surprises, says it’s not the smartest move.

“Where is the logic in that? Why don’t you cut out smoking or stop making alcohol – cutting down the size of a Killer Python won’t make a difference in the scheme of things,” she said.

“We sell single packets here and we also sell bulk. Nine times out of 10, people buy bulk. They want more of it. If they are going to charge the same price and you’re getting two small Killer Pythons, people will still buy the two.”

Despite fears that the price of the lolly will also increase, Nestle says its customers will be forking out just 50 cents for a single Killer Python, compared to the former price of $1; and a bag of the new Killer Pythons, despite weighing 12g more, will be recommended for sale at

retail and I have seen that most children want lollies when they get to the register. If their parents give in and they get a bag of smaller snakes rather than bigger ones, it is a better portion size.

Be ‘breast aware’ in October Penrith Imaging gets behind Breast Cancer Awareness Month initiatives KATHERINE TWEED

ocal residents walking into either one of Penrith Imaging’s clinics will be inundated by the colour pink, as the clinics show their support for the McGrath Foundation during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. $10 from every mammogram performed during the month will be donated to the Foundation, which will go towards placing additional McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities across the country and increase breast awareness in young Australians.

Penrith Imaging is expecting to complete up to 120 mammograms by the end of the month and are hoping that various cake stalls, a sausage sizzle and a signed Penrith Panthers jersey raffle will help raise additional funds.

“We see patients who are affected by breast cancer and we hear about the impact that it has on not only them but their families. Providing the imaging for them is one thing but by doing this, we can go one step further and provide support to those beyond our doors,” said Penrith Imaging radiographer, Michelle Punch.

“If people can see what we are doing,

“This is the first time this valuable service has been available in Penrith and will help reduce ‘false positive’ findings, decreasing the need for additional invasive tests and reducing patient anxiety,” said Regional Manager, Nola Ford.

According to the McGrath Foundation, campaigns like the one Penrith Imaging is involved in are not only beneficial for supporting communities with Breast Care Nurses, they end up raising a lot of awareness.

“Breast awareness is so important, because if you know what your breasts look and feel like, you’ll be more likely to notice if there is a change,” said McGrath Foundation Ambassador and Director, Tracy Bevan.

“We value our continued friendship with I-MED who have so generously donated more than $470,000 to the McGrath Foundation to help us fund McGrath Breast Care Nurses and we hope women over 40 will take this opportunity to book their regular mammogram as an important part of their health routine.”

ith statistics indicating that western Sydney kids are at a higher risk of drowning at the beach, Surf Life Saving NSW’s Surf School is making a visit to the region.

Surf Life Saving NSW is encouraging local schools to sign up to their Surf School, funded by the NSW Government Water Safety Black Spots Fund, during Term 4 with the aim of reducing the rate of drowning deaths in NSW. They’ll be educating local youth in general beach safety messages, rip identification, sun smart strategies, the dangers of high risk activities on the coast and using the Beachsafe App. “It is essential that before students living in western Sydney reach the high risk age of 18, they receive education in the dangers of coastal environments, especially with the summer holidays and things like schoolies fast approaching,” said SLSNSW Community Education Officer, Stacey Pidgeon.

Drowning death statistics from 2004 to 2010 have indicated that western Sydney residents are the victims of twice as many coastal drowning deaths than any other area of the state.

The Surf School will be delivered free of charge to any local school that registers and will provide a presentation as well

The Glenmore Park boy, like many his age, is particularly passionate about trucks, diggers and cranes; machinery that he can see regularly working at the Mulgoa Rise development near his home.

He’s turned his love of these machines into art and has completed three related artworks that could become part of a professional body of work.

“I use brushes and a roller to paint. If I use too much paint it drips – I like it when that happens. My favourite part was painting the wheels,” Levi said.

Art teacher mum, Bellinda Boyd, has been guiding Levi as he completes his paintings and has taken him to art galleries and construction sites for inspiration.

“He wanted to paint a digger, so for this one we went up to Mulgoa Rise. I talked

to him about the shapes of the diggers and get him to tell me what they are. I am trying to help him to see as a visual artist sees,” she said.

“For him to be able to do this, it just blows my mind... he has done very well – from the perspective of an art trained person, it is a bit phenomenal.”

She said that she feels it is important for children to learn to use their creativity from a young age, which is part of the reason why she is encouraging Levi to paint.

“When they grow up and take over our roles in the community, it is things like creativity, problem solving and critical thinking that will be important. Art does that automatically,” she said.

“It is very important for kids today because they are going to be designing websites and doing similar jobs in the future and that all comes down to creativity. It will be a very different world for their generation.”

Don’t give doubt a voice, self-confidence is key

Strategic planning is important for any business

Women tend to be their own harshest critics. We often doubt ourselves or second guess our decisions, motives and abilities. Often that doubt can be as a result of comparing ourselves to our competitors or fellow business women. I see many articles about ways to become ‘the expert’ in your field, and while that might be feasible or desirable, it is not an essential component, or a measure of, success.

So while striving to be better, learning from others and being mentored by those with more expertise than us, are all great actions to take as a woman in business, you need to assess your motivation. If your motivation for doing those things is because you doubt your own abilities and are seeking instead to emulate others, you are unlikely to find success.

Self-confidence is a common trait of successful business women. This doesn’t mean they know all the answers or never make mistakes. And it doesn’t mean that they are necessarily ‘the best’ at what they do in order to have that self-confidence.

They have just learnt that doubts have a way of eating away at confidence and

stifling the abilities you do have.

Theodore N Vail had a good way of viewing doubt: “Real difficulties can be overcome; it is only the imaginary ones that are unconquerable”. Or another way of looking at it, there are enough things to worry about without also adding your doubts to the equation!

This quote by Vincent Van Gogh is also a really lovely way to approach your doubts. He said: “If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced”. Don’t give doubt a voice!

To many business people, strategic planning is something meant only for big businesses. But it is equally applicable to small businesses. Strategic planning is matching the strengths of your business to available opportunities. The leaders of a business establish the vision of its future and then develop and implement the actions necessary to achieve that.

To do this effectively, you need to collect, screen and analyse information about the business environment. You also need to have a clear understanding of your business, including strengths and weaknesses, and develop a clear mission, goals and objectives.

It must all be realistic. This often involves more work and thinking than expected. Business owners need to be critical of themselves and be able to look at their own business from the outside to see chinks in their armour.

Strategic planning focuses largely on managing environmental forces, which include competitors, government, suppliers, customers, various interest groups and other factors that affect your business. How you manage these and other

fter just missing out on a NSW Origin jumper earlier this year, Penrith Panthers winger Josh Mansour has gone one better by being named in the Australian Kangaroos team for the upcoming Four Nations tournament.

And his teammate Matt Moylan will join him in the squad after being called up on Wednesday following Jarryd Hayne’s shock decision to quit rugby league.

Mansour and Moylan were two of Australia’s best during their Prime Minister XIII match against Papua New Guinea last Sunday with Mansour nabbing a try in the 34-16 win.

Mansour and Moylan become the 18th and 19th Panthers to don the famous green and gold, and the first since ex-teammate Luke Lewis in 2012.

All up 10 Aussies have been selected to make their Test debuts in the tournament, which begins with a double header at Suncorp Stadium on October 25.

“We have a really good blend of experience and youth,” Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens said.

“The positive for me is the experience that even the debutants have. We have a

A late comer to the sport at age 10, Emily has been a sensation ever since she picked up a Gilbert.

Not only has she represented the Penrith District Netball Association at state tournaments nearly every year since she’s been playing but next month will travel all the way to Western Australia to represent NSW for the second straight year.

Emily will travel to Perth in late November as a member of the U16 Ladies Indoor Netball NSW Blues State team who will take part at the National Championships.

It will be the second time the St Clair resident has represented her state since taking up the indoor version of the game a little over 12 months ago.

“Last year I was encouraged by my outdoor coach to try indoor netball and I’m really glad I did,” Emily said.

“When I made the NSW team last year I felt really privileged to wear the blue uniform. It was really exciting to be able to say I’m representing the state and I can’t

However, fulfilling Emily’s dream for a second time does come at a cost with the trip to Perth for the National Championship costing upwards of $2000 per player. The Nuts ($2.80) Glen McElhinney in race seven was another one to enjoy the one by one spot for most of the event. He came out at the 200m and had to pull out all stops to only just get around the leader and runner up Hannahs Freedom.

AN EIGHT race program complemented the Harness Racing at Penrith Paceway last Thursday night.

Race one saw young driver Nathan Xeureb score on Nik Direct ($5.90).

Western districts pacer Bohemian Art ($18.50) Anthony Winnell scored an upset in the second. Badly placed three back on the inside for the majority of the race he got out at the 400m and accounted for runner up Indy Girl and the leader Sweetest Angel.

Another one from the west Live Christian ($2.50) led all the way for driver Sam Hewitt in the third.

Sieders falls at Bathurst sport

Drama for Londonderry driver at motor racing’s biggest weekend NATHAN TAYLOR

his year’s Bathurst 1000 had it all.

Drivers running out of fuel on the final lap, emergency roadworks halfway through race – and that was just the main event.

But last weekend’s Bathurst spectacle also had plenty of dramas in other races, in particular the Australian V8 Ute Racing Series involving Londonderry’s very own Dave Sieders.

For the first time in five years, Sieders missed a podium finish at the famous track after contact with fellow driver Ryal Harris punctured his tyre in the final race of the round at Mount Panorama.

Sieders was on target to make it a double podium for the Sieders Racing Team (SRT) with fellow SRT driver Rhys McNally taking out the round with two race wins, however, contact from Harris for the second time in two days at The Chase saw Sieders fail to qualify for a finish for the first time since his rookie season.

“Even after our incident in the first race (also involving Harris), things were looking good for a double podium for the team

Londonderry’s Dave Sieders faced all sorts of problems at Bathurst last weekend here, right up until halfway through that last race,” Sieders said.

“That’s the first time in five years I haven’t been on the podium at Bathurst, our first DNF since Homebush in our rookie season and the first time this year we’ve scored less than 100 points.”

Despite the obvious disappointment at Bathurst, Sieders will return to the track next weekend at beautiful Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast.

“I’m really looking forward to the Gold Coast, it’s definitely a favourite of mine, and next to Adelaide is my next best

qualifying tracks with three poles in four starts,” Sieders said.

Meanwhile in the Bathurst 1000, Penrith driver James Courtney finished a disappointing 13th in the great race along with fellow Holden Racing teammate Greg Murphy.

AFL: The Penrith Rams AFL Club held their annual Presentation Night last Saturday with Jake Pianta winning the coveted Michael Walker Medal for Best and Fairest. Pianta left his run late for the Medal overcoming nearest teammate Matthew Laffan in the dying stages of the count. Pianta finished on 22 votes. Also winning big on the night was Christian Triffitt who won the Clubperson of the Year Award for his hard work behindthe-scenes while Penrith State MP and former Rams player himself, Stuart Ayres, was awarded a Life Membership. After a sensational season with the women’s team, Nat Camilleri won the Ramettes Player of the Year Award just ahead of Nikki Perrett.

The club said a record attendance was on hand for the Presentation Night held at the Penrith Paceway.

Serevi’s rugby career is something to marvel.

Not only is he famous for his decorated rugby sevens career, which resulted in two World Cup wins in 1997 and 2005, but he’s also prolific in the 15-man game having played 39 games for Fiji’s national team between 1989 and 2003.

The former fly-half also represented Fiji at two Commonwealth Games in 1998 and 2002.

aisale Serevi, one of Fijian sport’s biggest names, landed in Penrith last Thursday for the HSBC Rugby Festival.

Regarded as one of the greatest players ever to play international rugby sevens, the 46-year-old World Cup winner was also joined at the event by fellow rugby sevens legend, Englishman Ben Gollings, as well as current Wallabies stars Nick Phipps and Bernard Foley.

Around 150 kids from western Sydney schools and community groups attended the HSBC Rugby Festival which saw them participate in a variety of rugbyrelated skills and drills at Nepean Rugby Park.

Serevi, who in 2013 became the first Fijian inducted into the IRB Hall of Fame, said he was overwhelmed by the support of the coaching clinic.

“The key of the HSBC Rugby Festival is to try and encourage kids to play rugby and let them know it’s a sport for all shapes and sizes,” he told the Weekender.

“The kids really had fun and when we told them it was over they said ‘no, we want more’ and that was really pleasing to hear.”

The importance of the import As there should have been, there was a lot of hoopla about this being the 10th season for the A-League last week.

Memories, good and bad re-visited, lists of greatests and worsts debated and general recollections of where the competition has been and where it might end up in the near future.

The standard of football covered the last point sufficiently, but if there was one detail to illustrate how far the A-League has come, it was the performances of the imports.

Not your big stars like David Villa. They’ll always get attention, and hopefully, always live up to the hype.

It’s the regular, inside the salary cap import I’m talking about.

It was one of the great struggles of the first decade of the A-League, getting those type of players to these shores, hoping they settle and enjoy their surrounds.

Some worked, some misfired badly – a wrong decision made worse by the expense involved, the emotional distraction created and that player taking up real estate on the pitch that could easily have

gone to a young Australian kid. Not to get all xenophobic about it, but given the rules – five imports allowed per club – if one was a dud, what a waste.

Week one of season 10 showed how far recruitment has come.

Edson Montano for the Jets looked a likely proposition who will benefit from a fit Marcos Flores starting.

Pablo Sanchez was an important part of Adelaide’s win at the home of the champions, Brisbane.

All of the above aren’t household names apart from your regular football anorak.

The fact that there’s so many of them worthy of mention, when in the past it’s been one or two to catch the eye after one week, speaks volumes for the direction the A-League is heading.

As for the Wanderers, Vitor Saba and Romeo Castelan didn’t get much of a chance to grasp their moment, given the deficit when they entered Etihad Stadium.

They’ll be okay, they’ll provide, they’ll shine.

More’s the better.

Meanwhile, Western Sydney Wanderers have announced the signing of Socceroo Nikita Rukavytsya from Bundesliga club 1.FSV Mainz 05.

Signed on a one year deal Rukavytsya joins the Club to add strike power to the Wanderers attack. With the ability to play anywhere across the front third, the speedy 27-year-old is sure to excite fans of the Wanderers.

Ante Covic is the goal keeper for the Western Sydney Wanderers and answers five big questions every Friday in the Western Weekender

Last Friday’s 4-1 loss to Melbourne was the first time the Wanderers conceded four goals in a single match, what happened?

We’d been on a high for a while and we were confident coming into the game despite having a few players unavailable.

It just came to a point where we didn’t start the game well, copped a couple of early goals and we never got back into it. We deserved to lose that game to be honest. Maybe we take it as a reality check that nothing’s easy unless we work hard for it but we got well and truly punished on Friday night.

Did missing some experienced names in Nikolai Topor-Stanley, Tomi Juric and Matthew Spiranovic effect the outcome at all?

Topor-Stanley brings a lot of experience and structure to our backline, same with Spira, they are two key players for us. Juric, who’s been injured lately, has also shown his worth over the past year. We’ve still got players like Romeo Castelen to get full match fitness, same with Vitor Saba and we’ve also just signed Nikita Rukavytsya.

Things are looking positive in that regard in that we’ve got players to come in and do a job for us, but we also need to understand when these players aren’t available that we still have to step up.

Turning your attention to Sydney FC this Saturday, what do you make of them this year plus their new coach Graham Arnold?

Sydney have a very potent strike force if they are all available and Arnie has shown over the last few years that he’s a very astute coach who knows how to get the best out of his players. Sydney FC will be a different proposition this year and had a decent game against Melbourne City on the weekend.

Talk us through what it is like playing in a Sydney Derby?

Mentally it’s a different emotion because you don’t want your city rival to have bragging rights. I’ve played in derbies all around the world and they are all the same – there’s always a huge amount of passion involved. You don’t want to say that you are trying harder in a derby because you

try hard in every game but there’s a feeling that the supporters feel and us players feel as well that you don’t want to give an inch to your closest rival.

Our fan submitted question this week relates to the penalty goals goalkeepers face from time to time, in particular yours against Besart Berisha’s on Friday night.

Is there logic as to which way you move in that situation or do you just guess?

Each situation is different, some you go on instinct while others you try and read.

I’ve been quite successful at the Wanderers with penalties only conceding two goals from eight attempts. You take each penalty as it comes, sometimes you have a feeling, other times you wait for the striker to make the decision rather than you move early. The one against Berisha last week I made the decision, which way I was going to go, a bit early without analysing his run up first.

estern Sydney Wanderers coach Tony Popovic has declared his side have “moved on” from last Friday night’s thrashing at the hands of Melbourne Victory and is now firmly focused on tomorrow night’s blockbuster against Sydney FC. Missing a host of big name players including captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley, Tomi Juric and Matthew Spiranovic, the Wanderers were well and truly thumped by their interstate rivals in the A-League season opener, going down 4-1.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday morning, Popovic said the loss to Melbourne was best left in the past and the focus now was to return to form in one of the biggest games on the A-League calendar – the Sydney Derby.

“We’re preparing for Sydney [this week] and we aren’t dwelling on that anymore. We’ve analysed the game, we know what we need to do and now we are focusing on Sydney,” he said.

“When it comes to derbies, form doesn’t really matter. We’ve just got to make sure we learn from last week, concentrate on preparing

With Topor-Stanley currently on Socceroos duty in Qatar, striker Mark Bridge took over the captaincy role last week.

The 28-year-old local junior echoed his coach’s thoughts on the loss.

“It wasn’t our best performance… thank God that’s out of the way,” he admitted.

“There’s a lot to learn from that but you have to forget about it because if you dwell on it too much this week and take it into the game on Saturday it’s going to hurt you.”

Saturday night’s game is at 7.30pm.
