THE HEARTBEAT OF PENRITH

MAJOR BOOST The western end of the Penrith CBD has been crying out for major redevelopment and fi nally, a $7.35 million project is set to start the rejuvenation process. On Monday evening, Penrith City Council approved the development of 83-85 Union Road, Penrith, which also fronts Union Lane. The site owners say it could transform the CBD area.

LIVES AT RISK The Tasmanian Devil is out, and the Penrith Panthers are in: A deal is set to be struck that would see the Panthers take NRL matches to Tasmania from next season.

Penrith Panthers’ bold move to take NRL to Tasmania t may be some 1,400 kilometres from Centrebet Stadium, but the Tasmanian community is ready to welcome the Penrith Panthers from next season – if a landmark deal that would see the club play an NRL match there each year gets the green light. Penrith Panthers CEO, Warren Wilson confir med to the Weekender on Tuesday that the club is in talks with the Tasmanian Government to send a Panthers home game to Tasmania every year until 2017. “Yes a meeting took place [last Thursday]. We’ve

taken games away before and we’ll look to take games away in the future, if there’s a commercial reason,” Mr Wilson said. Initial whispers were that the Panthers were due to take one home game to a country NSW town in 2014, presumably Bathurst, but it was not announced when the NRL draw was released earlier this month. With the Panthers only attracting an average home crowd of 10,000 in season 2013, it makes fina ncial sense for the Panthers to shift one game a year to a different venue. “We’ll talk to a number of different places and we’ll look to take a number of different games away,” Mr Wilson said.

Former Tasmanian Rugby League chairman and president of the Hobart Tigers, Justin Kearney, said if a deal was to be struck between the Panthers and the Tasmanian Government it would be the biggest thing to ever happen to the game in the Apple Isle. “It’s the best news in the history of Tasmanian Rugby League, if this comes off it’ll be the big boost that we need down here,” Mr Kearney said. “Rugby league is a minor sport down here but we’re starting to grow, we’ve got a state-wide football league here now. Th is could be the sort of thing that could take it forward.”
