enrith City Council has axed this year’s Australia Day events, amidst the surge of COVID-19 cases in the community.

The events on offer would have allowed community members free entry to enjoy Cables Wake and Aqua Park, along with Ripples Leisure Centre at St Marys and Penrith.

Despite the celebrations being largely outdoors and no State Government restrictions preventing them from going ahead, a Penrith Council spokesperson confirmed to the Weekender that the events set for Wednesday were cancelled because of the current public health risk.

“Penrith City Council, with the interest of public health and safety in mind, has made the tough decision to cancel our Australia Day community events due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the current high local transmission rates,” the spokesperson said.

“This decision has been made in line with our commitment to help keep our community safe, minimise the spread

of COVID-19 and reduce the potential impact to our healthcare system.

“While it is disappointing to cancel a community event, we believe this to be in the interests of the Penrith community and is the safest option at this point in time.”

Council ran similar events for Australia Day last year when the state was under harsher COVID-19 restrictions.

The Weekender has confirmed that both Cables and Ripples will still be operating on Australia Day, but the general public will have to pay for entry.

Meantime, Panthers Leagues Club looks to be forging ahead in hosting its Australia Day Carnival from 2pm.

The club will have free entry into the Backyard and unlimited carnival rides will be available for a $30 wristband purchased on the day.

There will be live music, Tim Tam and lamington eating competitions, as well as thong throwing competitions with prizes to be won.

Speciality themed cocktails will be available and a fireworks display is also scheduled for 9pm for all attending if the weather permits.

ver the summer holidays I did my very best to turn off the TV and radio at 9am each day, and ignore social media for the best part of the morning.

I turned off the notifications from the news apps too, not because I wanted to escape reality but because the daily obsession with COVID numbers had reached embarrassingly stupid levels.

We have entered the stage of the pandemic we always knew was coming but too many believed never would.

The virus has swamped us. But it’s the perfect time – high vaccination rates, a less damaging strain and our already strong pandemic response measures have helped ensure our rates of seriously ill or dead have kept low by world comparisons.

In fact you could even praise the Prime Minister (dare I even suggest it) for Australia’s initial border response, ensuring case numbers didn’t explode until we were well down the pandemic’s path, when we could handle things much better and with improved knowledge.

Months ago now we reached the stage where raw daily numbers are not overly important and certainly are now more out of context than ever as rapid tests become the norm and strains become less severe.

That’s why here at the Weekender, our reporting focus will shift this year from case numbers to focusing on local outbreaks of concern, restriction changes and of course hospitalisation and ICU numbers.

Other news outlets will justify the obsession with case numbers, despite being told by health experts and our political leaders it’s not the number to focus on, by saying that people are still responding to such content at huge levels.

People are clicking on it and watching it, so they must want it.

Truth is they’re back because Twitter and the mainstream media got angry, and the Government got spooked. Same goes for the decision to ban indoor dancing and singing.

But Australia has always been a little odd in its restrictions. I can’t find another jurisdiction in the world, for example, that was so obsessed with making sure we sat down, not stood, with our beer in the pub.

This week the NSW Government signed a Health Order to allow music festivals outdoors to proceed, but only if people are seated. Seriously, it’s so far removed from reality that it’s laughable. Who actually signs off on this garbage?

On one hand the Premier is desperate for us to “live with the virus”, on the other, we’re experiencing a ‘shadow lockdown’ that has obliterated people’s confidence.

As for the Prime Minister, it is fair to say that like the vaccine roll-out, Australia’s transition to relying on Rapid Antigen Tests has been clunky and embarrassing.

We knew this transition was coming eventually, and surely we knew case numbers would surge at some point, yet it seems we were totally unprepared. Surely tens of millions of tests should have been sitting in warehouses ready for this time.

The toughest thing for our politicians to deal with at the moment is the reality that not everyone will be on the same page at the same time. There are some who still want lockdowns, believe it or not. Others who just want a free-for-all and even rapid tests to be tossed aside. Criticise all you want, but I doubt anyone would want to be in their shoes at present.

We must live with the virus in 2022. The time has come. But governments must give us the right tools and confidence to do so. Announcing $1000 fines for rapid tests we can’t find in the first place and reintroducing mundane restrictions won’t help.

But editors and news directors should exist to ensure what goes to air and print is responsible content. If clicks and views are being put above that core news value, the media truly is broken.

You only have to check in overseas to know that while COVID is still a key news item, people are moving forward and focusing on getting on with their lives, knowing the pandemic will be lurking behind them for a little while yet, but determined to not let it define them for another year.

But of course its not just case numbers that have become an obsession. The fact the whole response has become so political is also a stain on how Australia is handling the current stage.

Imagine the joy of being in Opposition during a global pandemic. Everything is the other guy’s fault and you don’t even have to tell us how you would have done things differently, and even if you did, there’s no proof it would have worked.

In an election year, the opportunity to tear Scott Morrison down at every opportunity will not be missed. Same goes for NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet.

Some of the criticism is fair, some isn’t.

In Perrottet’s case, the claim that he “let it rip” and sent COVID out of control by removing mask rules and QR check-ins on December 15 is ludicrous.

As outbreaks in other mask-dedicated states have proven, nothing was going to stop Omicron’s spread. And Perrottet actually put back the easing of restrictions from December 1 to 15, a point that has been lost in the argument.

Elements of NSW’s pandemic response remain problematic, however.

Nobody can explain to me why we’re still checking in at venues given NSW Health isn’t contact tracing at that individual level and close and casual contact rules no longer apply at your average retail outlet, supermarket or restaurant.

Iconic pub’s makeover Kingswood Hotel set to be demolished and rebuilt with new apartments

T

he iconic Kingswood Hotel could be getting a drastic overhaul under a new proposal worth close to $70 million.

A Development Application (DA) has been lodged with Penrith City Council for work to redevelop and expand the site.

The plans encompass 180 Great Western Highway, Kingswood where the venue currently sits, along with a vacant L-shape block of land at 26 Rodgers Street, Kingswood.

The development will be overseen by Iris Capital, a hospitality group who establishes hotels and development projects around Australia.

If approved, the proposed development would see a separate five-storey building constructed first on Rodgers Street with 52 residential units, a ground floor bottle shop and two basement levels for parking.

The existing Kingswood Hotel will remain operational during the construction of this Southern Site on Rodgers Street.

ronmental Effect says the Kingswood Hotel will be temporarily moved to the Southern Site to include a smaller sized bistro, sports bar, and VIP lounge.

The Northern site on the Great Western Highway will then be demolished to make

way for a seven-storey apartment building with 79 residential units.

The ground floor will be the purposebuilt space that will permanently house the new Kingswood Hotel and will also include three basement levels for parking.

“The proposed development is a unique opportunity for the holistic redevelopment of a significant landholding located directly opposite Kingswood Railway Station and positioned at a significant intersection in the locality,” the Statement of Environment Effects states.

The statement also states that on the rooftops of both buildings there will be communal open spaces and gardens.

There will also be 51 bicycle and 16 motorcycle spaces across the two buildings.

While the hotel will be temporarily relocated, the proposal does not seek to make any changes to the hours of operation of the pub which are 9am to 3am Monday to Saturday and 10am to 10pm on Sunday.

The bottle shop will trade from 9am to midnight Monday to Saturday and 10am to 10pm on Sunday.

The Kingswood Hotel is an iconic pub in the local area that has stood for more than half a century.

It opened in 1953, and has always sat at its current site on the corner of the Great Western Highway and Bringelly Road.

Joining the survival of the fittest

T

he other day I bought my first Rapid Antigen Test kit. “How many would you like?” asked the shop assistant, as if proffering packs of chewing gum. The price was $25 for two tests. Not wanting to deny others, I suggested one box would be enough – and walked out feeling a bit sheepish it had all been so easy.

Rapid test kits have been harder to find in Sydney this summer than the golden tickets in Roald Dahl’s ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. So, it won’t surprise anyone that my purchase wasn’t made in Australia at all – but at a CVS pharmacy in the seaside town of Monterey on the US west coast.

I’ve been in California for the past fortnight, determined to see through the holiday I’d always planned before Omicron hit.

Friends had been polite but not exactly encouraging.

“Well, enjoy yourself, but remember you’ll be swimming through COVID over there,” one said.

To even board the plane – and with a $1,500 ticket riding on the outcome – I had to record a negative test at Sydney Airport on the day of departure. The flight across the Pacific was surreal. I spent mine breathing into an N95 mask and not even daring to use the lavatory.

Other passengers wore shields, like holidaymakers in the Middle Ages.

Omicron is ripping through the US – currently averaging roughly one million new cases and upwards of 2,500 deaths per day. With its temperate winter climate, California is a better place to try and dodge the outbreak than the east coast.

In fact, I cancelled a side trip to New York, not wanting to worry about developing a scratchy throat the second I took the subway or huddled inside a Starbucks for warmth.

Indoor dining restrictions and a mask mandate are in place – but being enforced with varying degrees of vigour. In liberal left-leaning Oakland, my friend Tami greeted me with her mask on and a serious look in her eye. I momentarily imagined we’d spend the whole afternoon like that, even though we haven’t seen each other in years. In San Francisco, I actually had to fish out my Australian vaccine certificate.

But Kerry Chant would’ve been horrified if she’d entered the same dive bar as me in rural California near Yosemite National Park. No soap in the bathrooms, no sanitiser on premises and no bartenders in masks. Chuffed to meet an actual Australian, the regulars shook my hand and slapped me on the back as we watched college football.

For so long, distance insulated Australians from the pandemic’s worst effects. Our lives involved dutifully wearing masks, swiping QR codes, closing

borders to other states (let alone nations) and watching the daily 11am press conference. Cocooned in our bubble, we became complacent: our vaccine rollout was late. And we only discovered Rapid Antigen Tests months after everybody else. America’s experience of COVID was never so neat. Death became normalised.

Vaccine rates were only ever middling.

Public expectations of the health system were never particularly high. It’s been survival of the fittest from the very beginning.

It’s hard to imagine tens of thousands of cases a day in Sydney – when once we freaked out when there were 12.

And I’m unsure what society I’ll be returning to.

Today, I drove down the Californian coast along fabled Highway 1, misty and otherworldly in the fading light. It felt like I was disappearing off the earth itself.

Sometimes I feel we all are.

Brad blows up: Minister unhappy with “juvenile” behaviour

SW Health Minister Brad Hazzard has blasted those uploading fake COVID information to Service NSW, revealing he himself has been a victim of the “malicious” activity.

Mr Hazzard labelled the practice, where somebody declares another person as COVID-positive on the new self-reporting system via Service NSW, as “irresponsible” and “moronic”.

“It’s extremely irresponsible. You’re undermining what the public health team is trying to do to keep the entire community safe. It’s juvenile, it’s moronic and it’s so disappointing to think you

would undermine an incredibly hard working public health team,” he said.

Mr Hazzard said a $5000 fine would apply to anyone who misrepresents facts in relation to COVID-19 tests.

OLD BATHURST ROAD SITE TO UNLOCK OPPORTUNITIES An industrial site in Emu Plains will unlock new opportunities and generate economic activity in Penrith, with grand plans for Penrith City Council’s recent purchase of the site set to create jobs while strengthening the local economy.

Council has been handed the keys to the expansive property, at 158-164 Old Bathurst Road, and has commenced

preliminary works on site to convert it into a hub of jobs growth and innovation. The 16.29 hectares of industrial land previously housed concrete pipe supplier Rocla until 2020.

Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen said she was excited by the property’s potential and the transformational impact it will have on Penrith.

“Council purchased this site with the vision to create a contemporary industrial hub that will unlock hundreds of jobs within our LGA and drive incredible change in our City,” Cr Hitchen said.

“This will allow businesses to stay local, as well as drive further investment in Penrith and build on the revitalisation of our City.”

INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENTS

This week marked 45 years since the Granville Train Disaster rocked the nation, and for those who lost loved ones, the pain remains a daily reminder.

On January 18, 1977, a crowded commuter train derailed when approaching Granville train station at the Bold Street bridge, causing the bridge to collapse onto two of the train’s passenger carriages.

The crash, said to have occurred due to poor fastening of the track, remains the worst rail disaster in Australian history.

On Tuesday, Sydneysiders reflected on the 84 lives lost.

Penrith resident Ross (Rossco) Hutchison’s 21-year-old sister Cheryl was among those tragically killed.

Mr Hutchison described her as an “amazing, wonderful girl with passion for working with children”.

“She was given awards for her work with children and youth and was a great inspiration; she was loved by all,” he said.

Despite the time that has passed, he said not a day goes by that she doesn’t cross his mind.

“It’s amazing how often someone will mention it without knowing that I have a connection to it; you’d be surprised how many times trains come up every day,” he said.

“It had such an effect on me; it took me a long time before I could ever go near a train.

“My mum never slept again until she died, she was always awake all night; it really cut my dad’s heart out too.”

Mr Hutchison will never forget the day he found out the shocking news of what had happened to his beloved sister.

“I had to identify her which was a gruesome time; I was at the morgue for a couple of days and could only really identify her by her rings,” he said.

Whilst the government’s compensation was scarce, the family decided to put it towards building a playground at Westmead Hospital to honour her memory and love for children.

This was unfortunately ripped down during hospital upgrades, serving another devastating blow to the family.

“Every dollar my mum and dad got, despite being treated horrendously, they put into that playground. It was there for many years with her name but with the renovations they threw everything away,” Mr Hutchison said.

Mr Hutchison attended a memorial service at Granville on Tuesday.

ull of fresh ideas and a strong focus, Tricia Hitchen has been elected as the newest Mayor of Penrith City.

The recently formed 15-member Council elected the longstanding Councillor at last week’s Ordinary Meeting.

As Councillor Karen McKeown handed over the Mayoral chains, history was made as it was the first time in Council’s 150-year history that an outgoing female Mayor has passed the baton to an incoming female Mayor.

A retired police officer who was first elected to Council in 2012, Cr Hitchen has served two terms as Deputy Mayor since 2016.

The Liberal Councillor told the Weekender that she is honoured to take on the role unopposed.

“Mayor was a position that I had never coveted before, but I wanted to push for some certain areas and change things up, so when asked if I would run, I agreed,” Cr Hitchen said.

“I am now in a spot where I can manage it all because I wouldn’t have done it if I couldn’t do a really good job, so to have Labor and Independents support me was pretty special.”

Over her two-year term the Mayor would like to provide opportunities for

projects in St Marys and the eastern part of the Local Government Area, which some feel has been ignored.

“Penrith has got so many exciting things going on with the Regatta Park upgrade, City Park, Tench Reserve and the Soper Place car park revitalisation, but people over in St Marys want to know what is happening,” she said.

“There is a great future and prospects with the metro but that is still four years away and I don’t think it is reasonable to make people wait to see that change, so I want to put some focus on that.”

Cr Hitchen is currently a volunteer director of The Haven – Nepean Women’s Shelter, and has been vocal about her concerns regarding the overdevelopment of Oxley Park.

She is an active member of Council’s Access and Local Traffic Committees, and is a strong advocate for people with disabilities through her own experiences of having a child with a disability.

Cr Hitchen said she also looks forward to working with Councillor John Thain, who was also elected unopposed as Deputy Mayor.

“I was John’s deputy when he was Mayor in 2016 and we worked really well, so I can’t see that changing in any way,” she said.

“I am lucky to have someone as experienced as him, so I know I can ring him and trust his opinion.”

Penrith: Drugs found after search of woman and vehicle A woman has been charged after possessing prohibited drugs in Penrith.

About 3.30am on Thursday, January 13, police were patrolling Henry Street, Penrith when they observed a vehicle parked in the middle of the road with no headlights on.

It’s alleged the vehicle’s occupants were standing on the nearby path utilising an ATM. When approached by police, a driver and two passengers allegedly entered the vehicle and drove away before police signalled for them to stop.

The driver, a 30-year-old Lalor Park man was subjected to a breath test which provided a negative result.

Police had a conversation with the two passengers, a 45-year-old Whalan man and a 25-year-old Whalan woman before items relating to drug use were allegedly located in a vehicle search.

Police allege a small resealable bag containing methylamine was also located in the woman’s bag.

The woman was arrested and charged.

She will appear in Penrith Local Court on Thursday, March 3.

Cambridge Park: COVID positive man charged after drug find

A man has been charged with possessing prohibited drugs and failing to comply with a self-isolation direction in Cambridge Park.

About 7.15pm on Thursday, January 13, police observed a man riding a bicycle without a helmet on Oxford Street, Cambridge Park.

It is alleged that when approached by police, the man got off his bicycle and removed a small resealable bag of cannabis from his bum bag and hid it under a nearby fence.

The 20-year-old Penrith man was searched but no further items were located.

The man allegedly made admissions to possession of cannabis while speaking to officers.

Kingswood: Axe seized as part of investigation into stabbing Police are investigating after a man was stabbed during a fight in Kingswood.

About 8.40pm on Friday, January 14, emergency services were called to the Great Western Highway, Kingswood, following reports of a concern for welfare.

Officers were told a group of people had argued about a noise complaint before a fight ensued.

A 46-year-old man suffered a stab wound to his shoulder and was taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

Four unknown people – three men and a woman – were seen running from the address toward a sports club on Santley Crescent, Kingswood.

A 57-year-old man was arrested but was released shortly after.

Police established a crime scene, and an axe was seized for forensic examination.

Investigations continue.

St Marys: Man allegedly assaults officers during arrest at unit A man has been charged with a string of offences after being found hiding in St Marys.

About 9.15am on Saturday, January 15, police were called to a unit complex on Saddington Street, St Marys.

Police have entered an unoccupied unit where a 28-year-old man was allegedly hiding. It’s alleged officers called for the man to present himself which he did before he was arrested.

Checks on the man’s details revealed he was wanted for two outstanding warrants.

Police were speaking to the man when he allegedly kicked one officer and punched another in the jaw.

Cane toads may be in Penrith EMILY FESZCZUK

T

he New South Wales Government is calling on the community to keep an eye out and report sightings of some unwanted visitors in the area.

Penrith is one of at least 10 locations across Greater Sydney that has had several cane toads confirmed over the last year.

With a recent increase in sightings, Greater Sydney Local Land Services (LLS) and NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) are now investigating multiple reports of cane toads crossing the NSW border from Queensland.

Greater Sydney LLS Biosecurity Manager, Graham Wilson said the poisonous pest can cause serious issues.

“Cane toads pose a serious biosecurity threat to NSW and indeed Australia.

Despite some close calls over the years we have been so far successful in keeping them from establishing in Sydney,” he said.

“We are seeing a big increase in these sightings though with most cases related to the arrival of plant shipments in trucks from Queensland.”

The large, warty amphibians can poison pets and injure humans with their toxins, as well as poison many native animals whose diet includes frogs, tadpoles and frogs’ eggs.

Cane toads can prey on small native animals, create problems for beekeepers by overconsuming honeybees and possibly transmit diseases to native frogs and fishes.

Mr Wilson urged locals to report any suspected cane toad cases in the Penrith area to authorities.

“All members of the public can help keep their local area safe by reporting any sightings to NSW DPI through its exotic pest helpline,” he said.

“They can call 1800 680 244, complete an online form, or email a photo of the face and details to invasive.species@dpi.nsw. gov.au.”

Anyone coming from cane toad infested areas such as Queensland or the Northern Territory are also being asked to check their luggage, vehicle, or trailer to ensure they are not bringing a cane toad into the state.

Re-think needed on textile trash ALENA HIGGINS

enrith Council is seeking to extend a trial for the on-call collection of soft plastics and textiles.

It comes after last-term Councillor Kath Presdee called on Council to look at ways to expand its recycling strategies to encompass regular collections of soft plastics, clothing and textiles.

“I know it’s on the agenda, but I’m putting it formally so it will become part of the strategy going forward for the next Council to consider,” she said during a Council meeting towards the end of her term last year.

“While we are doing excellently on some aspects of waste reuse and recycling, there’s an awful lot we cannot take in our existing recycling.

“Parents of children, knowing how quickly they outgrow clothes... clothing bins are not the solution, not everyone can pass on hand-me-downs, we need to look at other ways of getting textiles and clothing back into a circular economy.

“And as part of that revised strategy, I’d also like Council to look at ways in which we can actually make better use of

recycled materials in our own local infrastructure such as playground equipment or road bases.”

Council has partnered with RecycleSmart and is conducting a trial for the on-call collection of these materials from residents’ homes.

“Since October 18, 2021, the service has picked up more than 700kg of soft plastics and 336kg of clothing,” a Council spokesman said.

“Due to the success of the trial partnership, Council’s Waste and Resource Recovery Team are seeking to extend the offering of a Mobile Problem Waste Collection service for an additional 12-24 months.”

In September 2019, 30 tonnes of recycled glass, the equivalent of more than 150,000 glass bottles was used in asphalt mix for the resurfacing of Stafford Street, Penrith.

“Quarterly site inspections have shown no significant changes to the texture, or wear and tear, with the results thus far being consistent with that of the standard asphalt mix in pavement,” the spokesman said.

“Monitoring will continue until March 2022 and the final review will be June 2022.”

Walk makes an impact Penrith charity event to raise funds to help tackle Motor Neurone Disease EMILY FESZCZUK

enrith residents will have the chance to Walk to d’Feet MND on Sunday, January 30.

The event, to be held at Sydney International Regatta Centre by Motor Neurone Disease New South Wales (MND NSW), will raise funds to support those living with MND. With two people diagnosed and another two dying each day in Australia from the disease, MND NSW Fundraising Manager Kym Nielsen said the work the organisation does is vital.

“MND NSW has been around for 40 years and we’re the only organisation in NSW that focuses on supporting people living with the disease,” she said.

“There are lots of organisations currently raising funds for research but until that answer is found, we are there to provide equipment, education as well as support for the patients and their families.”

Ms Nielsen said while MND NSW offers care for patients in NSW, ACT and the Northern Territory, they only receive 15 per cent of funding from the NSW State

David Trist was presented with a certificate at a surprise lunch on Wednesday at St Marys RSL. Enlisting in the Australian Army in 1943 at 18-years-old, Mr Trist said his experience led him to joining Legacy.

“I served in the Pacific with an infantry battalion. The 58/59th Battalion had a proud history of never losing a battle, which very few had, so I like to skite about that,” he said.

“I fell into the category of returned ex-serviceman that Legacy was looking for when I returned to Penrith to help care for the widows of those who hadn’t come back, so I decided to join.”

The veteran told the Weekender that the services provided by Legacy have vastly changed during the last 60 years.

“We would look after widows and children in much bigger numbers than they are today,” Mr Trist said.

“These days more service personnel are still here with us, but they suffer problems due to the dreadful warfare we have engaged in, in places like Afghanistan and the Middle East.”

Mr Trist said he has very fond memories of supporting local families during his time volunteering.

“We used to take 40 or 50 children down to Sydney Harbour and yacht owners

“I still get a Christmas card every year from a teenager who I used to drive to coaching in the city for her HSC… she became a high school principal and is retired now, but the memory is still strong in her mind.”

Now 96, Mr Trist said he’s not actively

attending Legacy meetings but encourages people to get involved.

“There are many families in difficult circumstances as a result of serving, so I always wanted to be able to help them and I think it has left them with good memories,” he said.

“A lot of the old families’ children that are well and truly grown up still keep in touch, so I will treasure that connection.”

Rubbish left behind Whilst we all understand the need for people to “blow off steam” after the hard times of the last two years, this December 31 came with some unexpected consequences. In our area of St Marys people were letting off fireworks with monotonous regularity throughout the evening, and the volume set off at midnight would have done the harbour proud, we just let it slide as a pressure release until... the following morning I went for my usual walk/jog only to be confronted by the mess you see in the pictures. Those that had been enjoying the local BBQ area had left copious volumes of garbage for someone else to clean up. Also where they had let off their fireworks ended up looking like a battle zone with shrapnel spread everywhere, and the area they chose to do this, the pristine cricket pitch at Bill Ball Oval. Now we are quite proud of our local oval and the care and

attention given to it by the council workers to get it into spectacular condition every season, now I have never been over to watch a game but I understand the competitors’ needs for top grade facilities, now left strewn with garbage and scorched almost beyond repair. As per usual the acts of a few will spoil this for many, even though private fireworks are illegal, everyone tends to let it slide during special celebrations. It’s a shame that what should have been fun for all now becomes a burden, both in repairs needed and financial support to get Bill Ball Oval back into its top class condition once again.

Lending a helping hand Local Penrith business donates $10,000 to help tackle scourge of dementia EMILY FESZCZUK

P

enrith business Vision Blinds and Shutters love serving customers but they also delight in giving back to the community.

The family business recently donated $10,000 to the Australian Alzheimer’s Research Foundation.

Director of Vision Blinds and Shutters, Zaia Babana, said the business decided to start the charity arm, VisCare by Vision, to support charity organisations and local clubs.

“We love the community and have been in the area for a long time, so we wanted to give back where we could by donating to a different cause each year,” Mr Babana said.

“The first fundraiser was $2,500 to the Breast Cancer Foundation, we have donated $3,000 for farmers during the drought, along with things like money for kids in need and sponsorships to a football club in Emu Plains and a soccer club in St Clair.”

Last year the business decided to focus on raising money for the Australian

Alzheimer’s Research Foundation as 250 people around the country are diagnosed with dementia every day.

“At the start of the year we pledged we would contribute $1 for every square metre of plantation shutters that we sold,” Mr Babana said.

“We also had generous donations from the public and our family and friends that helped us achieve a great result of $10,000.”

Mr Babana said this particular cause was close to his heart, and that more awareness about the disease is needed.

“My mum Linda is only 66 and had early

onset Alzheimer’s which has progressed into dementia that requires full-time care,” he said.

“It is a horrible disease so handing over the cheque to Leading Professor Ralph Martins made me so proud as it is not about our situation but about contributing in any way to help others in the future.”

Donated equipment already making a difference at hospital EMILY FESZCZUK

epean Hospital Emergency Department has had two pieces of vital medical equipment donated by some dedicated friends.

Lower Blue Mountains Rotary initiated a grant for over $50,000 as part of its Friends of Nepean Emergency (FONE) Committee.

Coordinator of the FONE Committee, Carolyn Fitzpatrick, said the project was a great addition to their other fundraisers.

“I believe we are the only group that actively fundraises specifically for the Emergency Department, and we know how incredibly busy they are at the best of times and now with the added pressure of COVID,” she said.

“The government will never be able to supply everything each hospital wants or needs, but we are able to do small activities that are fun for us as a group to participate in that will raise money.”

The ‘Caring for Children’ grant had the support from several Rotary clubs, and a $25,000 contribution from the FONE Committee and local Rotarians.

Eye Camera had been well received, reportedly already picking up two severe retinal conditions shortly after delivery.

“It is a handheld camera that takes a photo of the inside of the eye to detect and diagnose eye injuries or diseases,” she said.

“The advantage is that a permanent

record of the eye can be sent off to specialist doctors at any time, so it is very useful, and we were happy to supply it.”

A Giraffe Warmer Machine was also donated, which is specially designed to resuscitate babies and small children in emergency situations.

“The machine has everything onboard

in one spot from heat lamps, lighting, suction, oxygen and a swivelling mattress for practitioners to resuscitate children as quickly as possible,” she said.

The Rotary Club said it will always look to provide equipment when they could for the Emergency Department, particularly as services expand.

Top of the class: Impressive results for St Paul’s students EMILY FESZCZUK

H

ard work has paid off with three Year 12 students from St Paul’s Grammar School achieving the ‘perfect score’ in their studies.

Josh Lim, Mondira Paul and Marvin Madfouni received a top score of 45 for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Educational Diploma Programme and a 99.95 ATAR. The IB is offered in more than 2000 schools in over 120 countries around the world and centres around student lead learning, along with global concerns.

Of the 49 students from St Paul’s who sat for the IB Diploma, 16 per cent achieved results above 99 ATAR, 37 per cent above 95 ATAR and 53 per cent above 90 ATAR. Student Josh Lim said he tried to look at the positives of studying in lockdown via remote learning, and in the end the results were very rewarding.

“Limited travel opened up more time and flexibility with when and how I studied,” Josh said.

“While I had to be organised and take more responsibility for my learning, I

could take on information at my own pace.”

After a difficult two years, Mondira Paul thanked her teachers for all of their support.

“The support I received from my teach-

ers while studying remotely really drove my learning and encouraged my curiosity,” she said.

She said always having help at hand was critical.

“Inquiry is a skill that’s at the heart of the

IB, so having teachers who were always happy to discuss and answer my questions was really valuable,” she said.

Also overcoming the challenges of studying during COVID, Marvin Madfouni said it was a relief to receive his scores.

“After receiving my IB score, I felt overjoyed as I could finally see that my hard work and sacrifice had paid off,” he said.

“After a disrupted two years it was a bit of a surprise and a great way to end my schooling, but I couldn’t have achieved such good results without the support of my family, teachers and the school, and for that I am very thankful.”

St Paul’s Grammar School Principal, Ian Wake, congratulated all the students, noting the circumstances in which the results were achieved.

“Securing these marks in the IB, despite the many challenges students faced over the course of their final years of study, is testament to their ironclad determination, flourishing talents and great resilience,” he said.

Meanwhile, students across Penrith were nervously checking their computers and phones on Thursday, with HSC results due to be released.

In my first column as Mayor of Penrith City, I’d like to wish our community a safe, healthy, and prosperous new year. I am excited by the opportunities that our community and city have in front of it, and I’m sure that despite the challenges of COVID we can work together to realise those opportunities.

History was made at Council’s first meeting this year as Cr McKeown OAM passed on the Mayoral chains to me – the first time in our city’s history that an outgoing female Mayor has passed on the role to another female.

For myself personally, I have been on Council for 10 years. Looking back across those years I can see just how much Penrith as a city has changed.

But what hasn’t changed is our resolve to be the very best we can be.

The depth and breadth of experience on Council has seen stability during demanding times and its ability to listen and provide for the community is what sets Penrith apart. I want to acknowl-

edge the newly elected Councillors and welcome them as we serve with the interests of the community at the heart of all decision making.

We are entering an exciting time for Penrith with several transformative projects taking shape, such as the Regatta Park upgrade, the Police Cottage refurbishment, City Park, and the Soper Place car park revitalisation.

Given the success of these projects in Penrith, we now have the opportunity to expand similar projects into St Marys and the eastern part of our LGA. St Marys has a unique opportunity to grow and provide its residents with an exciting shopping experience, CBD and lifestyle that is second to none.

I am looking forward to the upcoming citizenship ceremony to be held on January 26, and wish all our residents a safe time over the coming weeks.

LEGENDS PLAYING MUSIC OF LEGENDS EMILY FESZCZUK Friends playing music that inspires them” is how former Powderfinger guitarist Darren Middleton describes his latest collaborative project to the Weekender.

Darren, as part of the Australian Rock Collective (ARC), will present Neil Young’s hit album ‘Harvest’ live in concert at Sydney Coliseum to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Sharing a passion for rock and roll that spans decades, Darren is joined by members of legendary Australian bands, Mark Wilson (Jet), Davey Lane (You Am I) and Kram (Spiderbait).

“

“A friend of mine in the sports industry had asked if I was interested in putting a group together to play music for the soccer World Cup in Brazil, and it didn’t take much arm twisting to get the guys on board,” Darren said.

“We realised how natural it felt to play together, so a few years later when all the bands and albums that we loved were turning 50 we decided to put some gigs together.”

Darren said his old band had sparked his appreciation for Neil Young’s classics.

“When I joined Powderfinger they did half covers and half original music, but they focused a bit on Young’s work that got me into that scene of music,” he said.

“That ‘70s folk rock sound was so cool, and Neil had this incredible balance of beauty and real, raw primal energy within that, which attracted me.”

Presenting the 1972 album ‘Harvest’ in its entirety, ARC will then perform a selection of songs from the rock master’s career.

“We have crossed paths with the bands of these albums we pay homage to and have had similar experiences, so there will be a lot of storytelling when we do this show,” Darren said.

“I am excited but when you haven’t done something for a while you might doubt yourself, but we have to trust in our process, and I know it will be awesome.”

Darren said fans of both new and old rock music will enjoy what is on offer.

“If people like our bands they will still get a sense of our personalities as well because we do not replicate it note for note,” he said.

“We treat it like art and make sure our interpretation still maintains the integrity of the original work.”

enrith Youth Orchestra (PYO), the professional orchestral training program for young musicians in the heart of western Sydney, has announced its prestigious weekend intensive program, PYO Academy, will be held on March 4-6.

The PYO Academy is delivered in partnership with the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO), Penrith Symphony Orchestra (PSO) and Penrith Conservatorium over the course of three days of ensemble music immersion. Led by renowned violinist Aiko Goto, students will be coached by ACO musicians, honing ensemble skills and building friendships with music industry peers and future leaders. The culmination of the weekend will be a concert, with Academy participants performing

Finally, terribly sad news during the recent break with comedic legend and ‘Full House’ star Bob Saget tragically passing away in his sleep just hours after performing a comedy set in Florida. Like many people my age, I grew up watching Saget on one of my all-time favourite shows ‘Full House’. Saget played Danny Tanner, a widower raising three daughters in San Francisco. 20 years after the original ‘Full House’ series ended, Saget reprised his role in the Netflix series ‘Fuller House’. It was both heart-warming and heart-breaking seeing the entire cast attend his funeral last weekend – further proving just how much he meant to every single one of them. Bob, thanks for the laughs… you’ll be missed.

Swimming is of benefit to all of us H

appy New Year all – I hope you have been able to take a break and safely enjoy the beautiful warm weather made just for swimming!

If we have learnt anything from the pandemic, it is that physical and mental health are equally and incredibly important to living a happy and fulfilling life.

With the pandemic continuing to challenge us all, I want to remind everyone of all the health reasons for people of all ages to just keep swimming into 2022.

Let’s start with swimming for mental health. Exercise releases chemicals like endorphins and serotonin, the natural feelgood hormones that lead us to experience a greater sense of happiness and wellbeing, improve mood, and stimulate the parts of the brain responsible for memory and learning. It is often documented that exercising regularly can reduce your stress and symptoms of mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, and help with recovery from mental health issues. The repetitive nature of swimming laps at your own pace, breathing rhythmically and in control of your own personal work rate can be very therapeutic, having an almost meditative effect on the mind.

The physical health benefits of swim-

ming are well documented. Swimming is a good all body workout, as nearly all of your muscles are used during swimming.

Swimming also increases heart rate for cardiovascular fitness, builds endurance

and promotes muscle tone and strength.

Being low impact, swimming alleviates joint stress and is a perfect form of rehabilitation after injury or for recovery following other forms of exercise.

In terms of swim safety, learning to swim is the best way to ensure that your children are equipped with the water safety skills they need. Lockdowns have had tragic consequences for our children, with 250,000 swimming lessons missed each week across the state during lockdowns, and significant increases in drowning numbers in 2020 and 2021.

Indoor pools are one of the most COVIDsafe environments available due to excellent COVID safety plans, cleaning protocols, stringent water testing requirements, chlorine acting as a disinfectant, enough space to socially distance and small half hour classes, so please do not hesitate to sign up for swimming lessons or continue attending lessons at our centres due to COVID concerns.

Drowning remains the number one cause of accidental death in children under five in Australia – learning to swim must prioritised, no matter what else may be going on in the world.

Time out of the water has been repeatedly proven to result in regression of swim skills in children. We simply can’t afford to see further regression of our kids’ swim skills.

Making the switch to Windows 11 W

indows 11 is Microsoft’s latest iteration of their desktop operating system. While it comes with a new modern look, those familiar with Windows 10 will easily transition across. There have been a lot of changes in Windows 11; some of them include: • The start button has moved from the left-hand side to the centre of the screen. It can be relocated back to the left-hand side if you prefer.

• Multitasking has been improved.

Multiple Virtual desktops (VD) can now be created, each with its own set of applications and individual desktops and backgrounds. The benefit here is having a desktop for work, home, and perhaps gaming. Or even have a customised desktop for each family member.

• A new Widget Panel can be accessed directly from the toolbar. This panel can show you tiles including weather, to-do list, mail, sports scores and news.

• An Xbox app built into Windows 11 provides video games with an Xbox Game Pass. It puts PCs on par with having an Xbox console.

A significant limitation will stop

you from using Windows 11 on some machines. Microsoft requires that it be installed on devices that contain a TPM 2.0 chip (Trusted Platform Module). This module reduces the risk of security attacks on Windows 11. This chip has been available on devices since 2016, so it should not

cause too many issues. There are some other requirements, which can be found on the Microsoft site.

Windows 11 is a free upgrade from Windows 10. For earlier versions of Windows, such as Windows 8, you would first need to upgrade to Windows 10. The

Keeping pets safe in hot weather A

s the weather heats up, the risk of heat stroke in pets rises. Heat stroke is a syndrome that occurs when an animal’s body temperature exceeds 40 degrees – this can cause problems with blood clotting and organ function. Heat stroke can result in shock, internal bleeding, organ failure and eventual death.

Cats and dogs are very different to humans because they cannot sweat from their skin. In humans, air circulating past sweaty skin cools the blood internally, so a person can still function on a 45 degree day. Dogs and cats only sweat through their foot pads, and with their bodies covered in fur, they cannot easily cool down. Animals will pant, to try and cool their internal body temperature but this is not very effective in extreme weather conditions. Dog breeds with short noses have a reduced ability to cool themselves with panting. Small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs are also very susceptible to heat stroke, especially if kept in outdoor enclosures.

As with children, DO NOT leave pets in cars, even briefly, especially in the warmer months. The internal temperature of a car can rapidly reach extreme temperatures

greater than 50 degrees. Exercise naturally heats a dog and they cannot cool well when the ambient temperature is warm.

Never let a dog do strenuous exercise when

the temperature is above 25 degrees. It is sensible to only exercise dogs early in the morning, or in the cool of evening during warmer months.

If extreme temperatures are predicted, then providing areas of shade or the cool of under the house will help. When temperatures greater than 40 degrees are predicted, leaving pets indoors with air conditioning is the best option. If this is not possible, then you can provide a child’s wading pool or plastic shell (left in a shady area) with only a few centimetres of water for dogs to lie in. Freezing water filled plastic bottles and placing them at the bottom of pet beds can also help cool down resting pets. Dogs will often enjoy drinking water from a large ice block as it melts over the day. This can be done by freezing water in a four-litre ice cream container. For rabbits and guinea pigs provide multiple watering devices – preferably dripper bottles so they do not get knocked over or dirty.

If you think your dog has heat stroke immediate veterinary attention is vital.

Treatment includes safely cooling the patient, supporting with IV fluids and antibiotics. Additional treatment like plasma transfusions and support of organ function may be required. Some animals will die despite treatment.

oyota is marking 25 years as the best-selling automotive brand in Australia with a pledge to bring an even greater customer focus to its operations.

Vice President Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations, Sean Hanley, said Toyota’s kaizen (continuous improvement) culture would accelerate the introduction of innovative vehicles and services that benefit owners and other road users.

“We are progressively upgrading our range with vehicles that have new levels of connectivity, advanced safety features that are moving ever-closer to autonomous driving, shared services like KINTO and a rising number and widening range of electrified vehicles,” he said.

The comments were on the back of the company’s delivery of Toyota’s industryleading sales of 223,642 new vehicles in 2021. This is Toyota’s third-highest total on record and substantially higher than the 204,801 vehicles its dealers sold in 2020 and the 205,766 delivered in 2019.

Toyota has been market leader in 199194, 1998, 2000 and every year since 2003.

It has also been the leader in commercial vehicles since 1979 – an unbroken run of 43 years.

Toyota is the only brand to achieve 200,000 sales in a year, exceeding that level in each of the past 10 years – and 17 of the past 18 years.

The strong 2021 result included a record 65,491 hybrid-electric vehicle sales, representing a record 29.3 per cent of Toyota’s total.

Toyota’s market share for the past year is 21.3 per cent. It has exceeded a 20 per cent share 25 times during the past twoand-a-half years, an unprecedented run of success for the brand.

HiLux (52,801 sales) retains its title as Australia’s best-selling vehicle for the sixth year in a row.

As the only ute to be the nation’s bestselling vehicle, it has also “come of age” in the Northern Territory, leading sales there for the past 21 years while being the leading vehicle of choice in Queensland for an unbroken run of 15 years and in Western Australia for 14 years.

hey were huge in local school playgrounds during the 1990s and now, three decades later, trading cards are making an almighty comeback.

No matter if you’re collecting or investing, trading cards – whether it is of the basketball, rugby league or Pokemon variety – are officially cool again after the “hobby” (as the experts refer to it) exploded in popularity in recent years.

Now Kingswood local Michael Patatou is attempting to capitalise on the craze by opening Penrith’s only dedicated trading

cards and collectibles store. Located on Batt Street in Jamisontown, Diggaz Trading Cards was operating as a successful online store for over a decade before Mr Patatou decided it was time to expand the business and make the booming trading card industry more accessible to the public.

The local family man said now felt like the perfect time for his business to take the leap and establish a physical presence.

“The hobby started getting really big in 2018/19, and then it got another kick along again with COVID,” Mr Patatou said.

“People were stuck at home looking for stuff to do, finding their old collections

from when they were kids, and it re-ignited memories from when they used to collect.

“They started seeing what the hobby is doing now, the value of cards etc, and it’s just brought a lot more people in.”

Along with some very cool collectibles and sporting memorabilia, Diggaz sells single cards, packets and the very lucrative boxed options for a variety of Australian and international sports. They also offer a range of services including trading cards for credit or cash, group breaks, and later this year they’ll offer a grading service so people can know the true value of their particular card.

After establishing themselves a career

and family, Mr Patatou said he’s noticed a lot of people around his age popping into the store to relive part of their youth.

“It varies but a large percentage of our customers are men in their late 30s or early 40s who collected cards as teenagers in school, because there was a big boom in cards back in the ’90s – everyone collected back then, you could easily find packets at the newsagent or service station,” he said.

“It’s also good to see these same customers bring their kids into the store too, as collecting is something they can share as a family.”

enrith Panthers legend Mark Geyer has revealed his COVID diagnosis, along with the rest of his family’s, during the recent Christmas and New Year break.

Speaking on his Triple M breakfast show on Monday, the 54-year-old father of five and husband to wife Meagan said one by one his family went down with the virus.

“On the 18th of December my daughter [Kennedi] and her friend had a RAT (Rapid Antigen Test) and they tested positive.

Then my youngest daughter Rafferti got it a day later,” Geyer told listeners.

“Raff stayed upstairs with the two girls and then Meags and Logan – my wife and my oldest boy – got it and it was Christmas Day.” Geyer said himself, his other daughter Montanna and youngest son Mavrik remained negative on December 25 and were forced to spend the big day separated.

“Christmas Day was spent with the three of us on one side of the room and the other five on the other side of the room, so we wouldn’t get it,” the popular South Penrith resident said.

Unfortunately, Geyer’s luck ran out just a day later when he and his oldest daughter Montanna tested positive to a RAT and PCR test on Boxing Day. “COVID is real, my whole family had it… thank God the symptoms vary,” Geyer said.

“The sore throat and aching pains seems to be the Omicron variant. Myself and Logan, we were the only two to lose our taste and smell, so we thought we may have had the Delta strain but my appetite was still there.

“It’s funny but within two or three days we were all fine. You get the Nurofen and

the Panadol pumped into you, you drink plenty of water, you convalesce for two or three days… our experiences were good, if you can call it good.”

As for Geyer’s youngest son, Panthers development player Mavrik, he finally fell on his sword after returning from a trip to Queensland over the New Year’s holiday period.

“Panthers had to give him seven tests to bring home and we all had to have another test each in order for him to go back to training… we all tested negative and guess who didn’t? Mavrik,” Geyer said.

“In the end, it caught him as well.”

Wanderers still in limbo COVID continues to force postponements as season remains clouded NATHAN TAYLOR

T

he Western Sydney Wanderers remain a club in crisis – unable to play matches at least until next Saturday, January 29.

So far this season, the A-League Men’s team have only managed to get on the field on six occasions, with their other six matches postponed due to “ongoing challenges with COVID-19”.

Before their expected match-up against the Brisbane Roar at Moreton Daily Stadium on January 29, Western Sydney would have had their past three matches postponed – against Melbourne Victory (January 16), Adelaide United (January 19) and Macarthur FC (January 22).

The side were last in action on January 9 against Melbourne City, a 3-3 draw at AAMI Park.

Last Sunday, the A-Leagues released a statement in relation to this week’s postponed clash against Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium.

“Following confirmation of a number of positive cases within the Western Sydney Wanderers men’s football over a few days, the scheduled match due to be held on

Wednesday, January 19 between Adelaide United and Western Sydney Wanderers has been postponed,” the statement said.

“Protocols put in place by the A-Leagues continue to be effective for screening and subsequent RAT or PCR testing in detecting the virus and ensuring immediate isolation. We continue to work closely with each government health department to implement the relevant state health directives in clubs where COVID cases are present.

“Our primary concern is for the health, wellbeing and safety of all players, staff and their families. We will continue to work with all clubs to confirm a new schedule for all postponed matches as soon as possible.”

While it’s still early days due to the many postponements, the Wanderers have had an average season so far. They currently sit in eighth position, with just one win and three draws to their name.

Making their quest for a return to the A-League Finals even tougher is the news skipper Rhys Williams will be sidelined for an extended period due to injury.

Scans have confirmed that Williams has ruptured his hamstring tendon and will be out for a lengthy period.

AFL: Former Essendon Premiership captain and coach James Hird will make his return to football in a new role with the Giants. The Australian Football Hall of Famer will join the club in a part-time capacity as a leadership consultant.

Having played 253 games for the Bombers, Hird won two Premierships, a Norm Smith Medal, five Best and Fairest awards, and was named in Essendon’s Team of the Century. Hird was awarded the game’s highest individual honour, the Brownlow Medal, in 1996, as well as being named in five All-Australian teams. Hird said he was looking forward to stepping back into the AFL industry.

“Getting to know Leon (Cameron), I’ve had a huge amount of respect for him over a very long period of time, so getting the chance to work with him was something I was really looking forward to,” Hird said. “It’s a part-time role, and very much around the leadership group but also around the emerging leaders and sharing my experiences in football and trying to get them to lead and encourage and work hard on that side of things.”

fter losing premiership-winning hooker Api Koroisau for the 2023 season and beyond, Penrith have wasted no time in shoring up his likely replacement in fan favourite Mitch Kenny.

Last week the club announced that the back-up dummy half had signed a twoyear contract extension with the reigning Premiers until at least the end of the 2024 season.

It’s a sign the Panthers plan to put their faith in Kenny from next year and are unlikely to go to market for a hooker.

“I’m completely stoked because Panthers is home for me,” the 24-year-old said.

“The people at this club have shown faith in me from the very beginning and been patient with my development. I give them so much credit for making me the player and the person that I am today.”

A local junior with the Windsor Wolves who progressed through the club’s development pathways, Kenny has played 36 NRL games for the Panthers since making his first grade debut in 2019.
