honda Buckley from Orchard Hills has been dealing with train station parking for the last 27 years, and she’s finally fed up with Penrith Station.

Mrs Buckley works in Parramatta, and in order to find a parking space she needs to arrive at the station so early that she ends up getting to work an hour before she needs to.

“I have to start work at 9.30am in Parramatta.

I catch an 8.03am train and it gets me into Parramatta at 8.30am. That’s just to get a park here – an hour early just to get a car park,” she said.

“It’s very frustrating, it’s very annoying and it’s getting worse all the time.”

Mrs Buckley said that Monday and Tuesday mornings were especially hard to find a park.

This week, things got even worse.

Without any explanation, around 80 spaces in the Belmore Street Council parking lot were blocked off on Monday and Tuesday.

The Weekender tried to find an all day car space between 7.45am and 8.30am from last Thursday to Tuesday, and found that not one parking spot on the southern side of the station was available at 7.45am, and cars were already parked in gardens.

Last Friday, several spaces in the Belmore Street car park on the southern side were blocked off, then on Monday and Tuesday the Weekender found the 80 spaces taped off from the public.

Station staff offered customers little explanation as to why the spaces were closed.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott catches up on local Budget reaction by reading the Western Weekender ocal residents already know it, but now Prime Minister Tony Abbott is well aware of it too: The Western Weekender is Penrith’s leading source of local news.

Mr Abbott visited the Lindsay electorate last Friday as he continued to push the benefits of this year’s Federal Budget.

During the visit, Mr Abbott caught up on the local Budget reaction by reading the latest edition of the Weekender.

The Weekender ran multiple pages of Budget reaction last week including coverage of changes to childcare, small business and pensions.

Mr Abbott also Tweeted a picture of himself reading the paper out to more than half a million followers on the social networking website Twitter.

Parking pain is beyond frustrating, it’s now just bloody ridiculous While we’re all hoping that the predictions of working closer to home come true, at the moment a huge chunk of Penrith residents leave the local area to go to work each day.

A big percentage of those people use the transport network and we constantly have the State Government pushing public transport in an attempt to get us out of our cars and off the roads during peak periods.

But if we really want people to use public transport, then we need to find a way to improve parking at Penrith Station.

It has reached a laughable stage and as the photo below shows, drivers are now giving up and parking wherever they can, risking fines just so they can get to their train on time.

Even more laughable is that 80 spaces were suddenly unavailable to commuters on Monday and Tuesday without any explanation.

Our story on today’s front page explains a little more about that farcical situation.

Commuters tell me that by 7.30am most mornings, it’s impossible to find a park on the Westfield side of Penrith Station, and it’s the same story by about 8am on the other side.

If you’re catching a train after 8am, I’ve got absolutely no idea where you park.

Some have suggested if they can’t find a park, they risk a fine by parking illegally or fork out $40 to park in Westfield all day.

More spots open up here and there and there’s promises that more parking will be delivered, but

It is simply not good enough

it should never have gotten to this stage. Local residents shouldn’t have to put up with this crap just because they’re trying to do the right thing and use public transport to get to work.

It should have been fixed long ago, but given current and past governments were incapable of doing it, now is the time we must act.

Both Council and the State Government need to deliver adequate parking. Right now they are failing dismally.

Thankfully, there is some light at the end of the tunnel with Penrith MP Stuart Ayres announcing last week that 65 more commuter parking spaces will be made available at Penrith by the end of the year. In addition, planning and investigation work continues to deliver a further 300 commuter spaces close to the station, as part of a huge upgrade of Penrith Station.

Construction is due to commence later this year, and completion is scheduled for 2018.

Can you imagine how many more hundreds if not thousands of people will be commuting from Penrith each day by the time 2018 arrives?

It is simply not good enough that a regional, thriving, growing city like Penrith doesn’t have adequate parking for people who get off their backsides and want to go to work each day.

It is up to Sydney Trains and the State Government to provide adequate levels of parking at their stations, and it’s up to Penrith City Council to come to the party with required parking for its residents and ratepayers.

And while we’re talking about planning, can I give Sydney Trains some advice?

According to their trackwork calender, no trains will run between Penrith and Blacktown on the October long weekend. Sydney Trains should have the foresight to realise that shutting down a key part of the network on NRL Grand Final day is ridiculous. And yet, in the weeks leading up to the game, we’ll all be encouraged to use public transport. How bloody ridiculous.

AFE Western Sydney student and Penrith resident Andrew Tomkins has just spent the last three months building a duplex, all in the hope to find full-time work.

Mr Tomkins is one of 81 carpentry and plumbing students involved in the seven month long construction of a duplex in Cranebrook, that is now finished and open for families to move into.

“I did it for a couple of months and I started because I wanted hands on experience to start my career in plumbing,” Mr Tomkins said.

“It’s pretty much all about your experience, on what you know about plumbing, with all the pipes and what you have to do from a water tank to the bathroom – how it operates and works through.”

The project’s manager, Andrew Jones from TAFE Western Sydney said several TAFE classes were involved in the construction, with a good portion of them gaining work from it.

“We are constantly rotating students to get employment otherwise we are running out of students because they are getting jobs, if we don’t keep bringing on new students we would have nobody to help us,” he said.

TAFE Western Sydney Institute Director Robin Shreeve, Project Manager Andrew Jones and student and jobseeker Andrew Tomkins at the completed duplex “They’re going pretty good with finding jobs. This particular group here, 50 per cent of the plumbers have got employment as first year apprentices.

“The whole aim is to get these kids jobs, that’s the bigger picture.”

Mr Jones said most students in the program are studying carpentry or plumbing, but are being exposed to further trades in the industry during their experience.

“So there’s 81 involved, and roughly 45 carpenters, and the rest are plumbers and we’ve had one full Indigenous class come through,” he said.

“It’s not only just about carpentry or plumbing it’s about opening your mind to what the industry is about.”

Glenmore Park: Investigations continue into car park fight

Kingswood: Taxi stolen, driver assaulted in early hours

Police inquiries are still continuing after a fight that occurred at a Glenmore Park fast food outlet on Sunday.

Just after 8pm on May 17, police from Penrith Local Area Command responded to a report of a fight with a significant amount of people involved.

After arriving at the scene, police spoke to three 17-year-old males who had returned to the car park. They told police they had been assaulted by a group of people but refused to give any further information.

Penrith Police are urging community members who know anything about the fight to come forward to help create a safer community for residents.

Police also want to speak to those people who rang them on the night about the fight.

A taxi driver was assaulted and had his taxi stolen after picking up three males on the Great Western Highway at St Marys on Sunday.

At about 2.20am, the 36-year-old driver was asked by the males to take them to High Street in Penrith but along the way, the trio allegedly changed their minds. After asking the taxi driver to stop at the intersection of First Street and Santley Crescent in Kingswood, the group got out of the car before they allegedly started to assault the driver.

The driver managed to get out of the car but the males allegedly continued to assault him on the roadway. One of the males drove the taxi from the scene while the other two allegedly left the location on foot, according to police. The driver sustained bruising to his face and grazing to his knees.

Police are appealing for information after they found the stolen taxi in Derby Street in Penrith. The three males are described as Maori and Pacific Islander in appearance.

Commuters arrived on Monday to find 80 car spaces blocked off at Penrith Station structure Pty Ltd, to undertake works at the car park between 8pm and 5am on the days in question.

It is unclear why the spots were still blocked off during work hours.

State Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres recently announced 65 new car spots will be open to the public by the end of this year.

“These spaces are in addition to the 97 commuter spaces that were opened earlier this year on Lord Sheffield Circuit and the northern end of Jane Street.

This will bring the total number of new converted spaces available for Penrith commuters past 160, which is a big win for customers,” he said.

Penrith: Drug bust after man found in car park Police attended a Union Lane car park in Penrith after a call was made about an unconscious male who was seen in his parked car.

At about 2.40pm on Tuesday, May 12, police searched a white Ford Falcon after noticing the man was allegedly affected by some sort of substance.

Upon searching the car, police found a significant sum of cash, a white powder which they allege to be methamphetamine, and allegedly a small amount of heroin.

The 34-year-old, who is from Cecil Hills, was charged with two outstanding warrants and charged with supply a prohibited drug twice.

A man has been charged with affray, a charge that carries a possibility of 10 years in jail, after an alleged brawl last Saturday night.

At around 12.30am on May 16, the 19-yearold was taken to Penrith Police Station and charged after police allege he was acting in a manner that was threatening to the members of the public.

He is due to appear at Penrith Local Court on July 6.

fter almost 50 submissions from the public, the design for the pedestrian Nepean River Green Bridge between Penrith and Emu Plains has been changed.

State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres said the changes that are included in the May 2015 Community Update were based on the community’s feedback and are positive improvements.

“Community feedback has been valuable in planning this key walking and cycling connection which will improve safety and access across the Nepean River while preserving the historic rowing course,” he said.

“Improvements have now been made to the design to reduce visual impact and impact to property including reducing the number of bridge supports, lengthening the main bridge span and simplifying alignment.”

The changes include reducing the number of piers from four to two, to lower the impact on the river’s flow, and increasing the length of the main span from 175 metres to 200 metres, and increasing the height of the triangular steel truss from 11 metres to 12.5 metres.

With the main span increased that will connect directly with the abutment located above the eastern bank, the raked pier design has been removed, to avoid impacts on the embankment and the footpath on that side.

There will also no longer be a boardwalk around the raked pier and the locations of the terrace and balconies have been adjusted.

Mr Ayres said during the display of the Review of Environmental Factors, 49 submissions were received that can be viewed on the Roads and Maritime Services website.

Mr Ayres said relocation of overhead power lines will start late this year, and offsite steelwork fabrication to start assembling the bridge by mid next year will begin shortly after.

fter big announcements for small business in the recent Federal Budget, Minister for Small Business, Bruce Billson visited Penrith on Tuesday to speak with local small businesses.

Mr Billson, accompanied by Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott, listened to business’ concerns over superannuation, paid parental leave, health and politics.

Mr Billson said the feedback he received from small business owners in Lindsay was fantastic, and in particular how they felt the Government has interacted with them. “I got fantastic feedback about areas that are causing grief and challenges for businesses. This gives me a ‘things to do’ list that we can work on and see what improvements can be made,� he said. “You really heard people say ‘It’s great such a focus and attention has been on us’. ‘Us’ meaning the small business men and women that create opportunities and livelihoods in the community.�

Budget to tackle youth unemployment Federal Government tries to stop growing problem of long term unemployment amongst youngsters JADE ALIPRANDI

ith rising numbers in recent years, youth unemployment has become a topic of concern with more than 58,000 15 to 24-year-olds deemed long term unemployed.

However, a new youth unemployment strategy was released in last week’s Federal Budget along with a package of $330 million to eventually break the unemployment trend.

The Weekender took to the streets this week to ask local residents about the youth unemployment rate and why they think it might be hard to find work.

Over $200 million from the Budget will fund community workers to go into the areas with the most disadvantage and the highest jobless rates over a four year period, with $106 million stated for intensive support for youth facing the largest barriers to work with and funding going towards work experience places.

Demands for skills and education in today’s employment market has led to this increased number of unemployed youth, according to The Brotherhood of St Laurence.

I know there is some community debate around the proposed airport at Badgerys Creek and so there should be. Like the ordinary person in the street Council has been carefully weighing the arguments for an against.

In past months a number of experts in the aeronautical industry have presented to the Councillors on the nature of airports and of air travel in this century, noise management, air quality and the tremendous economic and jobs potential of airports.

Senior staff have also attended forums and workshops and what is becoming clear is that the people of Penrith need to have a voice in this most important development for western Sydney.

Council has formed the view that we need to advocate to achieve the best outcomes for our community.

Western Sydney suffers from the reality that there are not enough jobs close to home.

For this reason, since the airport was announced we have been advocating that it is not the final solution for western Sydney’s jobs and transport needs.

We argued that it needs to be part of

a much bigger initiative that radically changes the way people work and move within the region.

I believe we have been most successful with announcements of $3.6 billion to be allocated for roads and infrastructure. But more is required and to achieve that we need to be “inside the tent”.

There are a number of important factors that still need to be considered.

The early construction of a high speed rail link and the outcome of the Environmental Impact Study are two of them.

We will be working with other local councils to get expert analysis of the EIS when it is delivered, hopefully in September.

Although the plans for an airport in western Sydney have been on the agenda for more than 25 years, the modern world moves at a great pace.

I want to see that our community does not miss out on the benefits that will flow from the inevitable construction of an airport – and to do that – we need to be inside the tent.

More than 30 women have been killed due to domestic violence this year. It’s time to fight back.

ith a big focus on domestic violence awareness, the Nepean Domestic Violence Network are running a campaign throughout May and the coming months, titled ‘Behind Closed Doors’.

Beginning in Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, the Nepean Domestic Violence Network is using this campaign as a starting point towards putting a stop to domestic violence.

The network is made up of representatives from several domestic violence organisations who meet on a monthly basis to try and fight against the social issue by creating awareness and taking action.

“We aim to raise awareness and educate people in the broader Nepean area around the issue,” Community Outreach Worker for West Connect and member of the Nepean Domestic Violence Network, Sheryl Hardy said.

“We hope this campaign can encourage local businesses and services to get behind stopping domestic violence by participating.”

rime Minister Tony Abbott spoke with parents at Mulgoa Preschool last week about the coming changes in the 2015-2016 Federal Budget.

Accompanied by Minister for Social Services, Scott Morrison and Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott, Mr Abbott said the Budget is carefully targeted and will do the right thing by families.

“At the heart of this year’s Budget is the new Jobs for Families package which is going to make it easier for people who have youngsters in childcare and preschool,” he said.

“At so many family dinner tables people are talking about the economics of working – is it worth taking the extra day at work? Is it worth going out to work at all given the costs of childcare and preschool?

We want to change the economics of working.”

Luddenham mother Erin Bleisdale works full-time, and said the $840 million commitment to guarantee children time at preschools is the right direction to encourage people to work.

“I balance my son’s care between long day care and preschool. Preschool

supports him in the growth of where he needs to go for school, but I have long day care for the flexibility,” she said.

Mr Abbott added that western Sydney is full of ‘aspirational tradies’ and small businesses that will benefit from a 1.5 per cent tax cut and the $20,000 immediate write-off on purchases.

“I’m particularly pleased we’ve been able to offer the tradies of Australia, the tradies of Sydney, a $20,000 instant asset write-off because so many people want to re-equip their workshop or upgrade their toolkit,” he said.

Mr Abbott said Opposition Leader Bill Shorten’s Budget reply suggesting lower taxes and more spending didn’t add up, despite Mr Shorten recommending a five per cent tax cut to small businesses.

“He’s finally worked out that small business deserves a fair go but we’ve heard this story form Labor before,” Mr Abbott said.

“Kevin Rudd back in 2010 promised a five per cent business tax cut and never delivered it, so this is typical of Bill Shorten.”

However, Mr Morrison said the small business commitments and the $3.5 billion Jobs for Families package is fully funded by the Liberal Government and promised it would happen.

Like many others, my daughters are hard working, responsible, law-abiding citizens who took up what was legally offered to all new mothers. Why? To rort the system? To double-dip the purse? No – their only motive was to spend as much time with their babies as possible before they had to return to work. This is not a crime. They deserve an apology, Mr Hockey.

DVA funding in the Budget It was pleasing to note the Abbott Government’s commitment to rehabilitation and reducing claim time targets for Veterans in the 2015-16 Budget.

A $10 million commitment to boosting the number of claims

officers in the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) is also welcome. However it does raise the inevitable question of whether it will be enough. Over the past decade there have been numerous reviews, inquiries and commitments by Governments of both persuasions and yet Veterans have continued to experience long delays, red tape and stonewalling when seeking to have their claims processed.

More recently, staff cuts across the board have exacerbated these delays. Whilst we welcome the modest increase in the Budget a more meaningful step would be a move by the Government to legislate timeframes for decision making on claims for DVA so that our Veterans don’t wait years for a decision. All injured workers outside the Commonwealth have this protection. As the Senate Inquiry into the mental health of our Veterans ramps up and so does our military presence overseas, now is the time for the Government to ensure our veterans are able to access the care they deserve. Senator Ronaldson quite rightly points out that early intervention is key to

better long-term health outcomes for injured Veterans, which is precisely why the current delays and run around is so frustrating.

Our military personnel make an enormous sacrifice when they sign on to serve. It’s time, to paraphrase Senator Ronaldson, the Government honours its commitments to them.

Penrith Council has won their bid to host the 2017 Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA) NSW Annual Conference.

The conference will bring up to 200 women from councils across NSW and Mayor Ross Fowler said it will boost our local economy. “The ALGWA conference is a great opportunity to showcase our city and our community to delegates from more than 152 councils across NSW,” he said. “It will also provide a boost to the local economy with delegates expected to visit a number of our attractions, dine at local restaurants and enjoy some activities in Penrith while they are here.” Councillor Karen McKeown attended the 2015 ALGWA conference where the decision for Penrith to host was made. She said each year the conference has a different theme.

“We haven’t decided what the theme will be yet, but I think it will revolve around adventure; encouraging women to challenge themselves and take the road less travelled,” Cr McKeown said.

Council will work with the developers to create a high quality residential development in close proximity to the Nepean Village Shopping Centre, and refresh previous plans that approved a five stage residential and retail development. The previous plan included a public plaza, open space areas, on-site parking for residents and visitors and the initial development of 570 apartments.

Council is looking at holding more future events at Cambridge Park after the success of the recent outdoor cinema event. The family event attracted around 200 people to the park to watch the animated film, ‘House of Magic’, despite grounds still being damp from rain. The afternoon event boasted a barbecue from the Cranebrook Cambridge Park Junior Rugby League Club and a jumping castle. Council funded the event under the Neighbourhood Renewal Program and expects to hold youth events for teens in July as well as a school holiday program.

How a little Faith has given Bryan a new life JADE ALIPRANDI

ith a new lease on life, Bryan Regan, of Kingswood, is living life to the full with his newfound freedom thanks to his Seeing Eye Dog, Faith.

The Weekender last caught up with Mr Regan in November 2014 ahead of World Diabetes Day when he was using a cane to get around after losing his sight after developing diabetes several years before.

Not sure he would be able to let go of his cane, Mr Regan took on the challenge of working with a Seeing Eye Dog, meeting Faith in January this year.

“Faith is just an amazing dog – she is such a wonder and has completely changed my life,” he said.

“I’m getting out of the house more and adventuring out to other places.”

With a recent trip to Manly, Mr Regan was able to successfully catch a ferry, train and bus to get to his destination, all with Faith by his side.

Doubt began to set in when he thought he may never receive a Seeing Eye Dog, mainly due to his age, and after being on the waiting list for two years.

“There were a few moments that I didn’t think I was going to get Faith,” he said.

Still in regular contact with Vision Australia, who originally paired him with Faith, Mr Regan has been a long-term client.

“They’ve been great, really supportive and very helpful,” he said.

In 1984, Mr Regan met with several specialists within nine months who all confirmed he had Macular Degeneration, a disease where the small central portion of the retina deteriorates over time and is something that runs in his family, along with diabetes.

Diagnosed at the early age of 43, 17 years before the disease occurs in most people, Mr Regan didn’t believe what the doctors were telling him.

“I was only young so it was hard to believe at the time that I was going to lose my sight,” he said.

Mr Regan said he has no plans as yet to participate in Macular Degeneration Awareness Week, May 24 to 30, but can’t wait to see what Vision Australia might have in store.

“I hope to be involved in one way or another,” he said.

aying it forward to their local cafe, parents from the Nepean area have donated children’s toys to Sapphire’s Cafe in Glenmore Park.

Members of the Australian Breastfeeding Association’s Nepean group made a special presentation of donated toys to Sapphire’s Cafe and owner Jenna Vicary on Monday.

Meeting on the first and third Monday of the month, the group often have Sapphire’s as their meeting place, somewhere they consider to be family-friendly.

“Jenna has always had a little corner of the cafe sectioned off for the babies and toddlers with toys, but over time they have slowly disappeared,” volunteer breastfeeding counsellor, Nicole Bridges said.

“Donating the toys was a great way to move them on to a new home, especially from my family where my kids are a little bit older now.”

After putting a call out for toys on their closed Facebook group, several mothers responded wanting to give something back to the cafe.

“It’s an awesome thing and really nice to know when someone notices the work

you do for them,” Sapphire’s Cafe owner, Jenna Vicary said.

“It’s good because I do a lot for them and then they have done this for me, so it’s a really good feeling and a nice situation to be in.”

Anyone is able to join the mothers group that is run by the Australian Breastfeeding Association, for a fee, or you can try it out first.

The group also go out to dinner, have movie days as well as nights out for the parents.

Ms Bridges said it’s a great way for mothers to connect.

“Being a part of the group is a rewarding experience for all the mums,” Ms Bridges said.

“Nearly all the women who come along to a meeting join up to the group as they enjoy all the social things we do.”

The theme for this year’s National Mothering Week was ‘Support, Encourage, Inspire’.

It was this theme that inspired the gift giving exercise at Sapphire’s Cafe.

“Following with the theme, the group thought this could be our way to ‘pay it forward’ to Jenna and the Sapphire’s Cafe,” Ms Bridges said.

Local Bakers Delight stores join in nationwide campaign to raise $1.5 million for breast cancer support DALE DRINKWATER

Ms Bhesania said the money raised will go towards providing vital ongoing support for them.

“The money doesn’t go toward breast cancer research, it goes toward helping the breast cancer sufferers,” she said.

“It provides the My Journey Kit that contains information on support services, and the meeting that helps them connect with others.”

The BCNA hands out over 12,000 My Journey Kit information packs a year – a shocking statistic that indicates the number of people newly diagnosed with the cancer each year.

Last year, over 84 per cent of newly diagnosed Australian women received a kit free of charge.

BCNA Chief Executive Officer, Christine Nolan said they have now delivered a total of 100,000 kits.

“This impressive milestone would not have been achieved without the ongoing generosity of Bakers Delight franchisees, staff and customers,” she said.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Australian women, with 42 diagnosed every day and more than 2700 Australian women lose their battle against it yearly.

ums and their babies will be out in full force in Memory Park next Thursday for their fortnightly catch-up and Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser.

Created by the Penrith CBD Corporation earlier this year, ‘Mums and Bubs’ is a way for women to bring their children out to meet other kids and for the mums to have some social interaction.

The group has a catch-up once a fortnight with the mums deciding to participate in Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea this time around.

“The Penrith CBD Corporation have been involved in the Biggest Morning Tea for three years now but we thought it would be a great way to join the two occasions together and make one big fun day,” Office Manager for the Penrith CBD Corporation, Sue McNally said.

“It’s a really good feeling to be a part of it as not one of us hasn’t been affected in some way by cancer and to help raise money for that makes us happy.”

Between 20 and 40 mothers come along to the catch-ups to have a picnic and browse through stalls.

The group also has access to a qualified Mothercraft Nurse who offers advice and assistance free of charge.

ocal high school students studying a syllabus in commerce can give themselves the opportunity to win cash for their work.

The NSW Fair Trading Money Stuff Challenge gives students the chance to win $250 for themselves, or $2000 for their school by creating an innovative message about consumer rights.

State Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies said the challenge is open to students from years eight to 10, and will provide them with valuable insights.

“Students can learn about consumer rights by developing educational material for their peers on issues such as eligibility for refunds and avoiding scams,” Ms Davies said.

“By tackling issues of relevance to young people such as signing mobile phone contracts, online shopping and buying your first car, the competition teaches students to become savvy consumers.”

Over 1000 students in NSW were involved in last year’s program that is run as an in-class assessment for students, and packs will be distributed to schools containing information on entry requirements.

Mums and bubs in Memory Park in April “It’s great that Sharon is there to address any concerns among the mums as sometimes those services can be pricey as well as time consuming,” Ms McNally said.

“Having Sharon donate her time is a wonderful thing for the mums, especially the new ones.”

All mothers are able to attend on Thursday and with a gold coin donation, going directly to Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, they are able to have a mini morning tea with cakes, scones, and slices available.

The event will be on Thursday, May 28 at Memory Park in Penrith from 10am to 2pm.

o raise money for cancer research and support, St Marys Public School has gone sock crazy.

In the lead-up to hosting their own Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, the school added a few extra events in the fundraising mix such as raffles and donut sales, but their most outrageous of all was Crazy Sock Day. St Marys Public School Administrative Manager, Cheryl Guy, said to involve everyone they could in the fundraising, the school organised several events to literally ‘send home’ the awareness of cancer.

socks to school – like a mufti day,” she said.

“We’ve been having a Krispy Kreme fundraiser that has been going on for all the families through the school, and we’ve also been doing a weekly staff raffle every Monday raffling off gifts, like movie packs.”

These events have all been in the leadup to Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea on May 28, a fundraising event that Ms Guy has a personal connection to.

“It means a lot to me... the Biggest Morning Tea raises money for all cancers, not just for breast cancer or children’s cancer, that’s why the SRC has decided to fundraise for it,” she said.

Ms Guy was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2012, and since being treated at Westmead Hospital, she has been cancer free for three years.

Turning back Time

High St’s many changing faces Penrith’s main street has faced many changes over the years, but as Nathan Taylor reports, none are bigger than the 1985 decision to close the street to traffic and create a new, unique shopping mall Do you remember when High St was closed to traffic? enrith’s High St Mall was the talk of the town in 1985. It was meant to be the rebirth of Penrith’s Central Business District and increase trade in the area by as much as 20 per cent.

So why did it only last 10 years?

Before Penrith’s High St Mall was officially opened by Premier Neville Wran back in November of 1985, the concept to close traffic down part of Penrith’s High St was first proposed some 15 years prior when Ron Mulock was Mayor of the city.

“The mall concept was proposed first by planning consultants engaged by Penrith Council during my time as Mayor from 1968 to 1971,” Mr Mulock told a newspaper at the time.

Construction of the $1.5 million revolutionary mall began in June of 1985 when part of High St was closed to traffic and Penrith’s Mayor Brian King turned the first sod.

Although construction of High St Mall was seriously hampered by heavy rain, work continued at a hectic pace to meet the end of year deadline.

Interestingly, during the six month construction phase, a number of pieces of Penrith’s rich history were found.

Construction manager, Greg Alderson, said two rings, originally mounted on posts along High St on which to tie horses, were discovered when excavations began in the western end of the street.

Local historians declared they’d be better left in the ground, with the rings to be protected with a preservative.

Another fascinating part of Penrith’s history, which was also exposed during construction, was the original road.

The grand opening of Penrith’s High St Mall took place on November 16, 1985 with Premier Neville Wran and Mayor Brian King part of the official proceedings.

“15 years ago we started thinking about a mall in High St; three years ago we started planning one and 27 weeks ago we started

building one,” Mr King said in his speech at the opening.

“The management structure of this mall will make it the forerunner of a new generation in shopping malls throughout Australia. We have a mall which is unique to NSW.” The opening of the mall was hugely successful with locals flocking in as early as 8am and staying on for the afternoon’s celebrations.

The atmosphere was reported to be one of “carnival spirit”, which featured young children walking around with balloons, while their parents were entertained by the many activities.

To keep people coming back to the mall to shop, regular Sunday markets and fashion shows were just two of the many attractions planned for the mall.

Fashion houses were given the opportunity to participate in parades regularly, while buskers were allowed to perform for free as long as they had Council permission.

However as the years progressed and the new, more exciting Penrith Plaza started to take shape, many shoppers and businesses turned their backs on High St Mall.

In the early to mid-90s the mall became a ‘no go’ zone for shoppers, not just because of the lack of quality businesses in the area but because the mall started to become run-down and unsafe, especially at night.

There were a number of reports of people being assaulted at night by youths who would lurk the area.

The party was over.

In December 1995, Penrith Council decided they would close down the mall and re-open High St to traffic.

In September 1996, High St re-opened for the first time in nearly 10 years with huge fanfare.

Because High St was the original route used by explorers heading to the Blue Mountains, direct descendants of well known explorers Lawson, Blaxland and Wentworth took part in the parade to mark the opening.

here seems to be quite a few people I come across who cannot help but view life as ‘hard’, and they bring this view with them into their businesses.

I am not referring to people with genuine hardship, or serious health issues or any number of difficult circumstances.

I am referring to people who generally expect the worst from the world and view any positive as a stroke of luck.

I am going to let those people in on a secret: if you expect the worst, you are more likely to get it!

Not because there is something or someone out to ‘get you’, but because you will be too busy wallowing in your own negativity to see opportunities when they come to you.

And here is the second part of the secret: people who seem to always come across great opportunities are not sitting back waiting for them to arrive.

They are actively looking for opportunities, and in fact, probably have a hand in making those opportunities arise.

We all have days where we would rather stay curled up in bed because the thought of facing obstacles or continu-

ing to push through hard times is too much to deal with.

But allowing yourself to stay in a place of negativity and letting ‘what ifs’ to fill your head instead of ‘why nots’ is a sure fire recipe for business failure.

As women, we tend to be worriers: many of us spend a lot more time than men worrying about what might happen.

Researchers at the University of Cincinnati have found that 85 per cent of what we worry about doesn’t happen.

How astounding is that!

We get stressed and tired over things that haven’t happened and aren’t even likely to happen.

As John Lubbock said, “A day of worry is more exhausting that a week of work”.

Imagine if we put that same effort into imagining positive outcomes and dreaming up solutions to negative situations.

Tax related sale: If you give away Tax information or documents for the Tax Office, display these toward the front of the shop with a special stationery offer nearby.

Leverage accountant’s knowledge: Collaborate with your preferred

accountant by getting them in front of your clients or customers for a session on tax advice. It is great exposure for the accountant and also good for you as you are going to a greater length than usual to help your favourite people.

New Year celebration: If it’s relevant to your business, dress up your workplace and have an event for the end of the financial year.

New Year coupon: Make up a small business card size discount coupon, like 25 per cent off greeting cards, 10 per cent off a book or any discount you think will speak to your customer. Call it your Happy New Financial Year Discount.

While most customers will not care about the new financial year, enough are sure to engage with your efforts around this.

Reward your staff: If finances allow, the end of the financial year is always a good time to reward your hard working staff and thank them for their contribution to your business. Take them out to lunch or consider rewarding them with a small bonus. It may also be a good time of year to review their KPIs and present your refreshed business and marketing strategy.

enrith fans, where have you been?

Panthers legends Royce Simmons and Greg Alexander have issued a simple but effective challenge to supporters from past and present to return to the footy.

The decorated pair, who were key members of Penrith’s first premiership win in 1991, want Pepper Stadium to feel like the good old days again when the Panthers return home to face archenemies Parramatta next Friday night.

Speaking exclusively with Extra Time, Simmons said he couldn’t think of anything better when he was playing than running out in front of a packed house at Penrith Stadium.

“Back when I was playing the hills were chockas and the grandstand was full – it just made me feel proud,” he said.

“If you run out as a player and you see spare seats, you certainly don’t get the same buzz. Obviously you still play your best but it’s a major bonus to have the crowd behind you with a good noise level and people chanting.”

Alexander, who played 238 games for the Panthers, also encouraged fans young and old to return in their droves.

“Our numbers are too low, it’s as simple as that. We had a fantastic season last year and while our membership is growing, it’s growing slowly,” he said.

“We need a bigger core group of supporters, we always have. We need more people at the game, not just for the team, but for the football club to survive.”

Both legends are hoping fans return in numbers starting with next Friday night’s blockbuster against Parramatta.

While the game is historically a sell-out or close to it, the pair want to see more black jerseys there than blue and gold.

“Parramatta has a very good fan base, and I would hate to see the next home game with just as many Parramatta fans there,” Simmons demanded.

“We’ve got a team that’s great to watch and since Ivan Cleary’s been here, there’s one thing that stands out about our team and that’s we’ve always been in the game,” Alexander added.

“This group bust themselves every week and they never give up – that’s what you want from your team. You want them to give absolutely everything and we’ve had that since Ivan’s been coaching.”

So far this year, Penrith have averaged a crowd of 11,476 people – which is on track to be the highest crowd figure since the 2011 season.

In 2003, when Penrith won their second premiership, the club averaged 17,771 fans – which was and is still an all-time Panthers record.

Alexander, who is no stranger to playing on the game’s biggest stages, said a large crowd can make all the difference in a team winning and losing.

“Crowds can sometimes influence decisions, and it certainly does have an impact on the players and their ability to lift – whether they are behind or in front,” he said.

“It’s just a far more enjoyable experience – the bigger the crowd, the more chance you have of winning the game.”

But Simmons and Alexander just don’t want fans to show up to next Friday’s local derby, they want them to become committed by buying a membership and attending as many games as possible.

“I would love for us to fill the Melbourne game too, the week after, because we’re playing against a side that features some of the greatest players of all time,” Simmons said.

“When we play at Pepper Stadium, we want to win every game. Having a big crowd is a pretty important ingredient to achieving that.”

Rugby league has never been more popular on television and attracting big crowds to games, particularly during winter, is a growing challenge for the code.

But Simmons and Alexander say no excuses will be accepted.

So, Penrith, challenge accepted?

The Panthers take on the Parramatta Eels next Friday night, May 29 at Pepper Stadium. Kick off is at 7.45pm.

enrith Panthers winger David Simmons would have to be regarded as one of the most selfless players in rugby league.

Each week the 30-year-old continuously offers invaluable advice to younger teammates to make them better – even though those same teammates could soon force him out of the game.

Recently, fellow Panthers winger George Jennings spoke highly of Simmons and how his incredible mentorship was making a difference in his game.

Simmons, who’s a veteran of 190 first grade games, said he relishes helping players like Jennings and others in the team.

“George is such a good player naturally that he doesn’t need much advice,” Simmons told Extra Time.

“I just help with little things that he might not see in his game but most of the time it’s letting them know they’re in the team because they’re good players and just to do what they do best.”

Simmons returned to Penrith’s first grade line-up late last month after spending a number of weeks in the NSW Cup

While Simmons said he would’ve been quite content to play out the rest of the year in reserve grade, he’s very pleased to be back in the top squad.

“I thought I would’ve started the year in first grade, if I was healthy, but then when I got injured and missed a few games, I knew it would be hard to return because the players here are so good,” he said.

Simmons is currently in his final season at Penrith, with a decision on his future at the club or in the game, for that matter, still up in the air.

“I’m just taking it week to week, seeing how the body feels and the form goes,” Simmons said.

“I don’t want to go overseas, I’m going to stay in footy whether it’s playing or some other role. I want to stay in the game, it’s just a matter of how.”

t’s a long season and sometimes you simply have to dig deep, hold the line and grind out a tough result.

The Panthers did just that against Manly on Monday night – showing desperation and determination to hold on for their vital one-point victory.

Matt Moylan added another moment to his personal highlights reel with the winning field goal but you have to pay credit to Penrith’s defensive steel, which held the Sea Eagles scoreless in the second half.

The Panthers will need to show that same character against the Eels at Pepper Stadium next Friday if they’re to charge their way back into the top eight.

It’s definitely a good time to be a Panther with the club this week smashing its previous membership record.

After setting an impressive benchmark last season, the Panthers are proud to have now surpassed 16,500 members for the first time in the club’s history.

Still happy to be a Panther Despite a permanent first grade spot opening up at the club he left to join the Panthers, Api Koroisau says he remains content with his decision to head to Sydney’s west

A

pisai Koroisau has no ill feelings towards ex-teammate Isaac Luke after the Rabbitohs hooker surprisingly announced he was quitting the club for a move to the New Zealand Warriors.

Koroisau famously filled in for Luke during last year’s Grand Final win over the Bulldogs and was always his understudy when the feisty hooker was sidelined through injury or suspension.

One of the main reasons Koroisau left the Rabbitohs for the Panthers at the end of last season was the opportunity to earn more game time in first grade.

Speaking with Extra Time, Koroisau said he wasn’t too fazed with Luke’s move despite the fact if he knew of the switch earlier, he could have potentially stayed at Redfern.

“It didn’t bother me too much… I’m just really happy for him that he’s found something he’s wanted to do and that’s going back home to see his relatives and family,” he said.

Koroisau is currently a part-time member of Penrith’s first grade squad having filled

Koroisau said he was confident he wouldn’t be getting a call from the Rabbitohs anytime soon wanting him back to replace Luke in 2016.

“Nah, I think they are pretty happy with young Cameron McInnes over there so hopefully he does really well this year and gets that starting spot next year,” he said.

Koroisau is expected to be dumped to the

NSW Cup next week when Peter Wallace returns from injury for the match against Parramatta at Pepper Stadium.

Koroisau had an indifferent game for Penrith against Manly on Monday night.

He was active with the football but made two crucial errors when Penrith had attacking chances close to Manly’s line.

If Koroisau does miss out on first grade next weekend, he’ll continue to press his claims in the lower grades.

here’s just something about State Of Origin that never gets old.

I feel privileged to write this week’s column for you from deep inside the NSW camp at Coffs Harbour.

There’s no doubt Camp Coffs played a huge part in why the Blues won last year.

It’s quiet, it’s peaceful, it feels like the calm before the storm.

From the moment the players arrive at the resort they are focused.

Just behind the resort is the purpose built training facility with a full footy field.

Coach Laurie Daley knows the secret to Origin is winning it in the mind.

Most of what Daley does is aimed at getting the players to believe they belong here and they are ready.

Nothing is left to chance in the preparation.

Whether it’s sleep monitoring, diet monitoring, individual training and recovery schedules, group meetings or sessions with a psychologist there’s one main message, “you’re as prepared as you can be!”

The debutants will know they are ready because they’ve been picked ahead of veterans like Luke Lewis and Anthony Watmough, who were such a big part of last year’s historic win.

Josh Jackson and David Klemmer will run out on debut and feel 10 feet tall.

They won’t suffer stage fright because they will know by the end of this week that this is their time to shine.

There’s plenty we could discuss here

David Klemmer playing against the Panthers earlier this year about the gamble of playing two halves, the lack of experience with no Paul Gallen or Greg Bird and so on, but forget all that and trust in Laurie.

This is one cool cat who has picked a side not only for now but for the future that lies ahead.

Time will tell if it’s good enough to back up last year’s effort and topple the once almighty Queensland side, but as Laurie continually says, “if we work hard we give

ourselves the best chance of winning, if not, well Queensland won’t beat themselves”.

The message coming out of NSW players already is that this challenge is even tougher than last year.

The hunters will now be the hunted and by a team of champions and future immortals that won’t consider losing as an option.

PENRITH MAKE IT SIX IN A ROW WITH 42-16 THRASHING OF MANLY AT ST MARYS STADIUM

BEARS CLAW THEIR WAY TO VICTORY OVER DISAPPOINTING PANTHERS

The Penrith Panthers have extended their winning streak to six following a 42-16 carve up over the Manly Sea Eagles last Saturday afternoon.

The game against the sixth-placed Sea Eagles was due to be played at Brookvale Oval on Monday afternoon but, due to the constant state of the fields at the Northern Beaches facility, the match was moved to St Marys Leagues Stadium.

The Panthers opened the scoring first with Robert Jennings pouncing on a Dylan Edwards grubber kick near the left hand corner.

The Sea Eagles didn’t wait long before they levelled the scores with Liam Knight scoring between the posts.

But that’s where the scoring ended for the Sea Eagles with the rest of the half belonging to the Panthers.

Penrith raced in a further five first half tries with Moses Leota, Christian Crichton, Maliko Filino, Brent Naden and Cameron Collins each picking up their own meat pies.

Penrith led comfortably 28-6 at the break.

Last placed North Sydney overcame the late loss of key personnel to record a stunning 26-18 win over the defending premiers in what surely ranks as the upset of the season so far.

For the past five games Penrith, despite their injury toll, have been a model of consistency built around a simple game plan of getting to their kick and relying on their defence to force teams into error.

The opening 40 minutes against the Bears however, was one to forget for the Panthers given their low completion rate and a defensive line that leaked six linebreaks.

The Bears’ win is even more meritorious considering not only did they lose influential skipper Matt Hyland, the experienced Scott Sorensen and the team’s top try scorer, Sam Manuleleua before kick-off but Penrith’s team was further bolstered when enforcer, Adam Docker, was passed fit to play his first game since his Round 3 send-off against the Jets.

The opening minutes of the game were punctuated by errors, but North Sydney settled the quicker to score first in the 9th minute after an Evan Lee offload allowed Fred Junior Mauala to burrow his way over. The Bears soon doubled their lead in the 18th minute when replace-

A simple Will Smith penalty goal from 20 metres out did give Penrith an 18-16 lead with eight minutes remaining but a late tackle penalty awarded by referee Liam Nicholls proved to be the gamechanging call, as North Sydney scored two tries in the last five minutes of the game through Cody Walker and Darren Nicholls to seal a deserved win.

I

n the 60s musician Athol Guy’s beebop group decided they wanted to take on a more folky, bluegrass sound. They knew they’d need a lead vocalist so they set up an audition with a woman named Judith Durham, who Athol had met while working in an ad agency. What they found that day was the beginnings of a band that would become one of Australia’s most loved folk/pop groups.

The Seekers became a worldwide hit, launching the foursome into superstardom.

Founding member Athol Guy admits that he knew it was going to be something special from the very first time Judith sang with the band.

“We just sat together that night when Judith came along with us for the first time, we hadn’t rehearsed anything, and we started [singing] behind a couple of the songs that she knew,” he said.

“The background harmonics blended beautifully and suddenly we realised we had a sound that was quite different to anybody else, and the audience told us that the first night.”

What followed was a host of top 10 hits, including ‘I’ll Never Find Another You’, ‘Georgy Girl’ and ‘Morningtown Ride’, sell out tours around the world and a special place in the Australian story that saw them named as joint ‘Australians of the Year’ in 1968.

Decades later, while working on his memoir, a friend of Athol’s suggested he put together a production with all the footage and personal memories he had

from his time with The Seekers.

“He said why aren’t you doing a little mini musical with all those stories related to the specific songs,” Athol said.

Thus began ‘The Seekers Story’, a show that combines the visual and the musical to tell the story of The Seekers and Athol’s start in the world of music.

“There didn’t seem to be anything like this one, which was a very personalised story,” he said.

“It’s actually my story right from the time I was a little choir boy and how I sort of formed my musical tastes and how that morphed into the two little bee bop groups that I had in the late 50s and early 60s which then became The Seekers.”

The show was originally scheduled to play in Penrith next month but has now been postponed. No new dates have been confirmed at this stage.

‘The Seekers Story’ sees Athol joined on stage by musical friends including Buddy England, Michael Cristiano, Jenny Blake and Rod Hulls.

“They’re my own little local group. I’ve had this group of friends together for eight or nine years,” Athol said.

Together they perform some of the biggest hits from The Seekers including ‘I’ll Never Find Another You’, ‘Georgy Girl’, ‘The Carnival is Over’, ‘Morningtown Ride’ and ‘I Am Australian’.

The group also brings to life tracks from other iconic 60s artists who influenced The Seekers during their rise to fame, including a tribute to iconic musician Dusty Springfield.

“It’s not a covers group, the music is a tribute to the times right from early days, and a tribute of course to The Seekers and their great catalogue of songs,” he said.

‘The Seekers Story’ offers a little bit of everything for those who love the music of the 60s.

“It’s very fresh, there’s some very funny moments that people won’t be expecting and a few stories where they’ll go ‘wow I didn’t know that’,” Athol said.

The audience reaction to the show and Athol’s story so far has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The audiences have been fabulous.

There’s been standing ovations for the show,” Athol said.

“It’s lovely just to get out and meet people who’ve had The Seekers music as part of their lives for so many years.

“That’s one of the reasons I like to go out around the regional areas. You get to

meet people who you just don’t meet on the serious, city concert circuit.”

Through his years touring with the band and sharing their story Athol has gained an appreciation for how important The Seekers are in the history of Australian music.

“I think we’re part of the family wallpaper in so many homes around the country,” he said.

Athol Guy – The Seekers Story was scheduled to play in Penrith next month but the show has now been postponed.

Athol Guy is currently taking the show to regional centres across Australia.

ustralian singer/songwriter Rick Price will bring the story of John Denver to life when ‘Take Me Home Country Roads – The John Denver Story!’ returns to the stage after a critically acclaimed 2011 tour.

Rick Price, who is most well known for his hits ‘Not A Day Goes By’, ‘Heaven Knows’ and ‘Just Walk Away Renee’, will be returning to Australia from his current home in Nashville to take on the role of John Denver, one of America’s most revered entertainers.

Denver had a hugely successful career winning four American Music Awards and releasing 24 albums on the RCA label, 14 of which were certified gold. But behind the scenes the country boy’s life included episodes of alcoholism, infidelity and domestic violence.

Price brings to life these contradictions between personal and public life while entertaining audiences with some of Denver’s most loved hits including ‘Leaving On a Jet Plane’ and ‘Thank God I’m a Country Boy’.

The show was written by Australian theatrical producer Jim McPherson, who also wrote the hugely successful Johnny

Cash biographical show ‘The Man in Black’.

elbourne rockers The Cherry Dolls will be heading to the Tattersalls Hotel this June as part of their first ever east coast headline tour.

The 60s inspired five piece will be hitting the road in support of their new single ‘The Last Time’.

“It’s about moving on from someone and just trying to get over a breakup,” lead singer Josh Aubry said.

Aubry said there’s been a good response to the song from fans and new supporters alike.

“The reaction’s been really good so far,” he said.

“It’s quite different to everything else we’ve done so I was a bit nervous bringing it out but people are reacting to it really well, which is nice.”

The single comes from the band’s upcoming EP ‘Wasted Pearls’ which is due for release later in the year.

ouTube comedy sensations Superwog are bringing the laughs to Penrith when they hit the Evan Theatre stage as part of their ‘Talk Shit Get Hit’ tour.

The comedy stars have had enormous success with a sold out 2013 national tour, a sell out run at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival, over 70 million YouTube views and more than 400,000 subscribers to their YouTube channel.

You only have to look at the video titles, which include gems like ‘Why wogs could never be Surf Lifesavers’, ‘If Santa was a wog’ and ‘If Superwog was on My Kitchen Rules’, to know these guys don’t take themselves too seriously, and certainly aren’t afraid of a little controversy.

This will be Penrith’s chance to see what all the fuss is about when Superwog’s brand new live stage show hits Panthers this June. Their first show at the Enmore Theatre has already sold out, so be sure to get in quick as tickets to this tour are in high demand!

“The rest of the EP is a lot different to ‘The Last Time’,” Josh said.

“It’s a lot heavier. We tried to write an EP that really flowed as a whole instead of just four singles.”

The Cherry Dolls take most of their songwriting inspiration from the greats of rock ‘n’ roll, with a few more contemporary acts thrown in for good measure.

“A lot of our influence comes from old timers like Lou Reed and a lot of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. But also we’re inspired by early Strokes and early Kings of Leon,” Josh said.

With a huge fan base behind them, the Tattersalls Hotel is set to be rocking when The Cherry Dolls appear.

Seven and Foxtel’s Presto is the only remaining streaming service that hasn’t linked up with Apple yet.

he Queensland Theatre Company have brought a heartwarming story to life on stage with their production ‘Head Full of Love’.

The show, which will be heading to the Joan stage in Penrith this June, tells the story of two women who meet at the Annual Alice Springs Beanie Festival, Tilly Napuljari and Sydneysider Nessa Tavistock, who has run away from the city to escape her problems.

While making a beanie for the festival the two discover that despite their differences in upbringing and surroundings they actually share many

similarities. What follows is a beautiful friendship which forms around the creation of a simple beanie.

The play is directed by Wesley Enoch and written by critically acclaimed Australian playwright Alana Valentine, who also wrote ‘Run Rabbit Run’ and ‘Parramatta Girls’.

‘Head Full of Love’ has been earning rave reviews so be sure to head to the Joan in Penrith to experience this warm and wise tale of the unlikely connection between two people from different worlds.

DVD Dumb and Dumber To Rated M // KATE REID

As a fan of the original ‘Dumb and Dumber’ film I’m going to get straight to the point, this sequel is pretty bad.

It’s been 20 years and Lloyd has been spending his time in a mental institution after his heartbreak over Mary Swanson. After finding out it’s all just been the most elaborate prank ever pulled, Lloyd’s best friend Harry tells him about his health problems and the pair set out on an adventure to track down the daughter Harry never knew he had in the hope that she’ll be willing to donate a kidney to her long lost father.

What follows is exactly what you expect from a Farrelly brothers film, lots of misadventure and plenty of gross out moments, including one

very uncomfortable scene in a nursing home.

Fans have been waiting a long time for this sequel but unfortunately the film relies way too heavily on rehashing the same jokes and doesn’t come close to living up to the original. Yes, it’s fun to see the return of the shaggin’ wagon, but you can’t help but wish they’d put a little more thought into breaking new ground rather than giving us more of the same.

The first film, though silly and over the top, was comedy gold, but the writing on this one just feels lazy.

That being said it’s not totally hopeless, there are a few funny moments, but not many!

Zedd

True Colours // KATE REID ‘True Colours’ is the hugely anticipated follow up album from electro-dance act Zedd. After winning a Grammy for Best Dance Recording in 2014, the GermanRussian DJ is back with another collection of club floor anthems.

For this release Zedd took on the role of executive-producer as well as co-writer on tracks that feature Bahari, John Bellion and Troye Sivan.

The album includes the pop/dance single, ‘I Want You to Know’, which features Selena Gomez. The track has taken the charts by storm and sets the mood for what is an album full of great crossover pop/dance hits. It’s really no wonder Zedd has had so much radio play with his appeal to fans of both genres.

The tracks on the album do have a tendency to blend into one another, but if you’re a fan of big beats and party anthems then you’ll no doubt find plenty to love about ‘True Colours’.

Benedict Cumberbatch hits it out of the park with his role as Alan Turing in ‘The Imitation Game’.

The film tells the true story of Turing, an intelligent but socially awkward mathematician who is recruited by the British Intelligence agency MI6 during World War II to help crack the Nazi codes that are sent through a machine called Enigma, which is believed to be

unbreakable. With the help of a team including Joan Clarke, played by Keira Knightley, Turing builds a machine that is able to decipher the codes. While their work helps to save millions of lives Turing’s personal life is thrown into turmoil when his homosexuality, which was illegal at the time, is revealed.

hen one-time doctor-cum-vigneron, Larry Jacobs and journalist Marc Dobson migrated from South Africa in 1997 to pursue their passion for wine, they fell instantly in love with and bought the boutique Hahndorf Hill Winery in the Adelaide Hills, that was then on the market.

They were particularly fascinated with the number of Germanic and Austrian grape varieties that had been planted by the winery’s previous German owner in the early 1990s, with one of these being Blaufrankisch, which is an Austrian variety which thrives in the Adelaide Hills’ warm days and cold nights, and was being used to make Rosé.

In 2008, however, Larry and Marc took a bolder step, deciding to make a 100 per cent varietal Blaufrankisch – and to this day are the only Australian makers doing so, although the variety has recently been planted in both Victoria and Tasmania.

The just-released 2013 Hahndorf Hill Blueblood Blaufrankisch is a stunner drop, and well worth ordering directly from the cellar door.

If you are wondering about flavours, think along the lines of a blend of Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo and Shiraz, with elegant red berry fruit and a touch of spiciness, nicely cocooned in gentle tannin.

Certainly well recommended at $40 to enjoy with venison, lamb or duck.

Locals have a Ball for a good cause The annual OZWAC Ball was held in Penrith last weekend, moving to the new location of the Chairman’s Lounge at Penrith Stadium.

The event was a huge success and raised over $20,000 for OZWAC. Hundreds of people attended the annual event, dancing the night away and celebrating the ‘Heroes and Villains’ theme of the evening.

OZWAC was established to provide for medical research into the health of women and children.

It draws upon community support to raise funds and also raise community awareness of important health issues.

The Foundation, since its inception has supported research at Nepean and Westmead Hospitals and other research centres in New South Wales.

At the height of their service the little Mail Rail trains and the 220 staff who worked in the tunnels with them shifted 12 million parcels and letters a day…

84,000,000 a week, four billion a year, with some 70 of the driverless trains rattling along the narrow gauge (610mm) tracks at speeds of up to 35kph.

Then in early 2003 the Post Office abruptly announced the end of the Mail Rail, saying it was five times more costly to maintain the service than to use road transport, and on May 31, 2003 the trains made their last runs after 76 years.

A small staff was retained both to maintain the tunnels for safety reasons and to act in a security role stopping would-be vandals, graffiti sprayers and others trying to get into the tunnels, and the trains simply left where they’d made their last runs.

Train buffs, however, never gave up on bombarding London’s Islington Council with a constant flow of ideas to get the little Mail Rail running again, and finally it gave recent approval for a five-millionpounds (AU$9.8m) redevelopment of the Mount Pleasant station and mail sorting centre, that will include a Postal Museum to open in 2016, and a kilometre of original Mail Rail track to be restored to carry tourists from 2020.

A

railway that ran for 76 years beneath the streets of London, 20 hours a day, seven days a week, is planned to become a major new tourist attraction for train buffs and the simply curious – even though it never carried a single passenger during a working lifetime that ended a dozen years ago.

With its own tunnels separate to London’s famous Tube, this railway was the brainchild of the Post Office to move mail between Whitechapel, in the city’s East End, and Paddington 10.5km away in the west, doing so much more speedily than it could along the already hopelessly congested city streets.

First mooted in the latter part of the 1800s, construction of the Post Office Railway – soon known simply as the Mail Rail – began in February of 1915, with its narrow 2.7m diameter tunnels being dug 21 metres below street level and lined with pre-assembled iron tubes.

Two tracks, one running east and one west, were then to be laid inside these, but with a shortage of manpower and materials due to the First World War, work stopped in 1917 just two years after commencement, and it was to be another seven before it was to resume.

Finally in early December 1927 the line was opened for the world’s first driverless electric trains, initially carrying Christmas-rush parcels only, and from February 1928 letters as well.

Elderly men who do 30 minutes of physical activity six days a week are likely to have a 40 per cent lower risk of dying early compared with couch-potato counterparts, researchers say.

For men in this age group, just a small amount of regular exercise, is as beneficial as giving up smoking.

The evidence comes from a major project in Norway called the Oslo Study. In

the study, doctors enrolled thousands of men born between 1923 and 1932, who were given health check-ups, and volunteered information about their lifestyle and physical activity.

The initiative was launched in 1972-3 with a first survey among nearly 15,000 men.

In 2000, the survey was repeated among the same

group, of whom 12,700 were still alive. Of these, 5700 were able or willing to continue in the research. By 2011, deaths reduced this total to just under 3600.

The researchers were struck by the impact of regular physical exercise during the 2000-2011 period, when the volunteers were aged in their 70s or 80s. “A mortality reduction of 40 per cent was associated with a moderate use of time, 30 minutes, six days a week. Even whether the activity was light or vigorous,” their study said.

Among those who exercised vigorously defined as hard training several times a week the lifespan was a whopping five years longer than among those who were sedentary. The study, led

by Ingar Holme, a professor at the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences, is published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Volunteers who took part in the study after the relaunch in 2000 were the healthiest survivors of the original batch.

The benefits of regular exercise were clear, the authors said.

“Physical activity should be targeted to the same extent as not smoking with respect to public health prevention efforts in the elderly,” they said.

After rat bait is ingested, it takes several days to deplete vitamin K. After it is depleted, even the smallest trauma like a small cut can lead to life threatening bleeding.

What are the symptoms of

poisoning? Signs of poisoning usually appear a few days to a week after ingestion. This happens because it takes a few days to deplete vitamin K. Signs include lethargy, pale gums, bleeding gums, coughing blood, blood in urine or stools and small bruises over the body.

How is it diagnosed and treated? Diagnosis is made through history and based on a blood test that can check clotting times. If your animal ingests rat bait in the previous few hours, the vet can give your dog a medicine that will make them vomit; this allows most of the toxin to be removed from the body. An antidote for rat bait (vitamin K) is available and is given for four to six weeks post ingestion; unfortunately, this long course is required as rat bait can last in the system for an extended period of time.

Sometimes rat bait is ingested without the owner’s knowledge and an untreated animal can suffer from severe blood loss; these animals generally require aggressive treatment involving blood and plasma transfusions.

Luckily, rat bait poisonings can be treated. It is essential that you advise your vet as soon as you suspect that your pet has eaten rat bait. Treatment is much simpler in the early stages of ingestion.

he Western Sydney Wanderers will look vastly different next season after the club announced 10 players from the 2014/15 roster wouldn’t be returning.

Ante Covic, Iacopo La Rocca, Tomi Juric, Jason Trifiro, Antony Golec, Nikita Rukavytsa, Kerem Bulut, Nick Ward, Nick Kalmar and Adrian Madaschi have all parted ways with the club following the conclusion of their contracts.

“The departing players have served this club well and we wish them all the very best in the next chapter of their professional lives,” Wanderers CEO, John Tsatsimas said.

“The players that helped us win our AFC Champions League crown will forever be synonymous with this club and embedded in our history.

“In particular I would like to thank our foundation players Iacopo La Rocca, Ante Covic and Jason Trifiro for their contribution to the Wanderers from our inaugural season. These players have served this club with distinction on and off the field – their contribution to the region, to the making of this club and to our on-field results cannot be diminished.”

Goalkeeper and Weekender columnist for two years, Ante Covic, leaves the Wanderers after a decorated three seasons which saw him win an A-League premiership and AFC Champions League as well as A-League Goalkeeper of the Year and AFC Champions League Most Valuable Player.

Covic joined the club in 2012 after being released by the Melbourne Victory and made a record 97 appearances for the Wanderers in the A-League, AFC Champions League, FFA Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. Fellow foundation player Iacopo La Rocca joined the Wanderers from Grasshopper Zurich in Switzerland and scored eight goals in 78 appearances.

His honours during this time included a Joe Marston Medal, A-League premiership and AFC Champions League title.

Wanderers forward Tomi Juric, who joined the club from Adelaide United in 2013 and scored on his debut match against the Central Coast Mariners.

Juric, who also played for the Socceroos this year, will be best known to Wanderers fans for scoring an incredible goal in the club’s AFC Champions League Final last November.

“It’s definitely a place I’ll keep close to my heart and I’d like to thank everyone for their time and support over the years and hopefully it is not the last time I will be in the Red and Black,” Juric said.

Other players to depart the Wanderers include mid-fielder and foundation player Jason Trifiro (49 matches); Antony Golec (37 matches); Nikita Rukavytsya (28 matches, four goals); Kerem Bulut (13 matches, six goals); Nick Kalmar (13 matches, two goals), Nick Ward (one match); and Adrian Madaschi.

The Wanderers will now set about building their squad for the next A-League campaign, which begins in October.

ix local girls have returned home with bragging rights over their Queensland competitors following a successful clean sweep at the recent Australian OzTag Junior State of Origin Series.

Held on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast earlier this month, the Australian OzTag Junior State of Origin saw male and female teams from NSW and Queensland battle it out in a three game series for ultimate state glory.

The NSW 13 Girls OzTag team – which featured six girls from Nepean OzTag including Sophie Olsson, Ebony Prior, Brooke Bailey, Sarah Blaikie, Shannai Vakai and Sophie Robson – were one of the best teams across the weekend, clean sweeping their interstate rivals with relative ease.

The girls won 3-2 in the first game, 4-0 in the second and 7-2 in the dead rubber third game.

Coach Tim Bailey said it was another impressive display by his side.

“It was a great honour coaching these girls and they showed great composure in all their games,” he said.

Bailey wasn’t just coaching the girls side over the weekend, he also played in the

senior portion of the prestigious competition as well.

“I played in the Mens 35 NSW OzTag team with our series going to a decider and extra time drop off (5 on 5) with our

winning try scored after five minutes of overtime,” Baily recalled.

Later this year, Bailey will also coach the Australian 16 Girls team in the OzTag World Cup this December.

The emotional comments come after Tu’ipulotu’s side were once again thrashed 48-0, this time at the hands of the competition’s second worst team in Parramatta.

To make matters worse the debacle happened on a special day for the proud club, ‘Back to Penrith Day’, which celebrated the Emus’ 50th anniversary.

“I would like to apologise to the supporters, members and people who made the day happen… it was just very disappointing,” Tu’ipulotu said.

“There are no words that can describe the feeling I went through. It’s very disheartening.”

Tu’ipulotu admitted he felt let down by his players in front of what was a larger than usual home crowd.

With a lot of promotion in the lead-up to the match, the Emus were rated a good chance of securing their first win of 2015.

“I just wanted to showcase all the hard work we’ve put in but for the players to lie down like that, they’ve got to find it within themselves what they want to do,” he said.

“The loss hit home hard and it just goes to show the flaws within the system.”

Tu’ipulotu conceded that the Emus are in desperate need of help in terms of finance and player development from NSW Rugby.

“We’ve got quality coaches, that’s not the issue,” he said.

“The issue is we need quality players and that’s what we’re lacking right at the moment.

“The players we do have may be good in the next two or three years but at the moment it’s not good enough for what I want.”

Tu’ipulotu and his team will look to pick up the pieces this Saturday afternoon when they take on the ninth-placed Gordon Highlanders.

Gordon have won just three games all year, including a 23-21 thriller over Norths last weekend.

“What I have to do as coach is to remain positive and work hard on these guys,” Tu’ipulotu said.

“The impossible is there.”

omare Withell, also known as the ‘Burpee Man’, has thanked the Penrith community for their support during last weekend’s Relay for Life event.

The 34-year-old Werrington resident set the local community a challenge of helping him complete the mammoth task of 50,000 burpees in 24 hours.

It was the third time in as many years that Mr Withell had used the annual Relay for Life event, held at Penrith’s Howell Oval, for his unique burpee challenges.

175 people across 24 hours helped Mr Withell complete the challenge but, in the end, the ‘Burpees for Boobs’ team fell just a few thousand burpees short with 47,120.

“We knew it would be tough and the change of date didn’t help us because a few teams and participants dropped out due to other events on that weekend,” Mr Withell said.

“In the end, it came down to the general public helping us out more than anything.

“We had 175 people do between five and 1000 burpees. I had one bloke do 2000.”

category, where members of the general public showed up on the day to add towards the tally; a Team category aimed at personal trainers and gyms where they battled it out for 15 minutes to get out as many burpees as possible; and an Elite category which began after 9pm on Saturday and was open to individuals who could guarantee Mr Withell 1000 burpees in 10 hours.

“I want to congratulate the winners of the Team category M.A.D Personal Training for taking home first prize which included free Spartan Races and bragging rights over all other gyms and personal trainers in Penrith,” Mr Withell said.

“I also want to thank our sponsors, the Relay For Life committee, our fantastic volunteer crew and the awesome people of Penrith for helping us with our challenge.”

So will another burpee challenge be back in 2016?

Mr Withell said you can count on it.

“Being so close we definitely have to do it again,” he said.

“Penrith now know the Burpees for Boobs team and are eager to help us smash it out of the park next year.”

For the record, Mr Withell completed 1500 burpees during the challenge.

Around the grounds BASKETBALL: The Penrith Panthers men’s Waratah Championship League side can’t buy a win at the moment, going down to both Norths and Hornsby last weekend.

Penrith lost their first game of their double-header to Norths 84-80 before losing their second of the weekend 94-89 at the hands of Hornsby. Ben Kearins was Penrith’s best scorer across the weekend with a combined total of 37 points. Penrith have now slipped out of the top six and will take on the Hills Hornets this Saturday evening at Penrith Sports Stadium.

BASKETBALL: Penrith’s women’s team have bounced back from last week’s loss to win both their games against Norths and Hornsby. In their first game, Penrith defeated the firstplaced Bears 80-69 before returning the next day to beat Hornsby in a thriller 75-74. Tahlia Tupaea hit the winning shot on the buzzer to squash the Spiders. Alicia Poto was Penrith’s best throughout the weekend with 56 points, 24 boards and 10 assists.

Penrith’s women have moved up to second position and will also play the Hills Hornets this Saturday afternoon.

ICE HOCKEY: The Penrith Phantoms have lost 6-2 to the Norwest Emperors in the latest round of the Division 1 NSW Ice Hockey competition.

AFL: The Penrith Rams are back in business following a strong win over Blacktown in the AFL Sydney Division 2 competition. The Rams were far too good for the top of the table Magic, winning 81-51.

he GWS Giants continue to soar up the AFL Premiership ladder following their biggest win in club history last weekend against Carlton.

Friendless just 12 months ago, the Giants are now being talked about as a true Finals threat as they slowly emerge as the powerhouse club the AFL desires in Sydney’s west.

The dominant 78 point win over the Blues at Etihad Stadium was the Giants’ largest winning margin since they joined the AFL in 2012, easily eclipsing their 64 point win over Melbourne last season. The 135-57 rout was also GWS’ largest ever score.

Giants coach Leon Cameron was over the moon with his side’s victory – their fifth of the year so far.

“We’ve been on the back end of a lot of beltings over the first few years and bigger margins than that, so to win all quarters I think was really pleasing,” he said.

“It was an emotional week last week knocking off the Hawks, and there’s always that question mark of a young group.

“But clearly I can see they’ve got a huge appetite to work hard.”
