Christmas warning over new puppies Locals urged to ask the right questions and avoid unknown breeders when purchasing a new dog JADE ALIPRANDI

ith Christmas rapidly approaching, locals wanting to buy a furry friend this year are being warned to stay away from puppy factories.

RSPCA NSW and Animal Welfare League NSW (AWL NSW) have launched a campaign to help people identify puppy factories.

The organisations placed a fake Gumtree ad offering brand new healthy Cavoodles and within just four days, 111 keen puppyseekers were willing to purchase from an unknown, unregistered seller.

Almost 14 years ago, Penrith resident Jean Parlett was in a similar position and visited a puppy factory in Box Hill, unbeknownst to her.

She purchased what she thought was a purebred beagle, who she named Abbey.

“I was very naive at the time but I was determined I wanted this particular breed of dog and Abbey was advertised as a purebred beagle,” Ms Parlett told the Weekender.

“She came to us with a number of health problems including having a hernia and an irritated skin issue, and we also found out she is a crossbreed.”

Ms Parlett said it’s important that animals are treated properly.

“What I saw at this puppy factory was about 20 puppies all in one cage, about 1.5 metres by 1.5 metres big, climbing over each other,” she said.

“It’s really important that animals are treated with respect and given the appropriate time with their parent dog. Abbey was taken from hers too soon.”

Now nearly 14-years-old, Ms Parlett said Abbey is a “very demanding dog and not very trusting”.

RSPCA NSW and AWL NSW are encouraging locals to ask the right questions before purchasing a new pup to help put an end to puppy factories.

This includes asking to visit the breeding facilities to check puppies and their parents are being well looked after, and asking for a copy of the puppy’s veterinary history.

Gambling ads need reform The race that stops the nation was run and won again on Tuesday, with the usual routine taking place.

Office sweeps, club and pub functions, lucky winners, unlucky losers and a few sore heads.

While gambling is what keeps horse racing alive, for many the Melbourne Cup was often a chance for non-punters to enjoy the spirit of the occasion.

These days, however, it’s almost impossible to ignore the gambling aspect of the great race, with online bookmakers in particular saturating newspapers, radio, television and the Internet in the lead-up to the event on Tuesday.

It was simply impossible to escape the bookies desperate for a piece of the Australian gambling pie.

It’s about time, however, we made that escape possible.

Gambling advertising needs further significant regulation in Australia before a generation of kids are brought up with gambling being normalised.

Everybody who wants to have a punt should be able to have one, but forcing the message down people’s throats is leaving vulnerable people open to the possibility of their lives being ruined.

As I’ve indicated in this column many times, I’m all for personal choice and responsibility, but gambling advertising is out of control.

We should not be in a position where gambling advertisers can target the most watched television program of the night – the 6pm news – with sponsorships of the sports report.

Nor should somebody logging onto a news website or listening to the radio

be bombarded with special offers and incentives to gamble.

There’s some speculation that the betting market in Australia is getting extremely tight, with some bookmakers likely to exit in the next 24 months.

That’s why there’s so much desperation when it comes to marketing, but it needs to be controlled and regulated to ensure it’s not being force fed to us on a constant basis.

Time to get tougher to save lives Another week passes and more lives have been lost on Australian roads.

The road toll is out of control this year, with the number of people killed on NSW roads increasing by 14 per cent.

We are driving safer cars, yet having more accidents.

Something is seriously wrong.

There can be no doubt that distraction is an ever-growing problem on our roads.

You only have to drive around for a few hours to see how many people are

focused on their phones – talking, texting and inexplicably checking social media while behind the wheel.

People will always run the gauntlet – but speeding and drink driving campaigns over the years have certainly made an impact.

Police now have a new battle to fight on our roads and it’s not always as obvious as a speeding car or drunk driver.

Personally I think it’s time we increased fines, introduced licence suspensions and really cracked down on people using their phones while driving.

Perhaps it’s the only thing that will get the message through.

Think before you click I’m disturbed by the amount of coverage in the mainstream media focused on the break-up of Karl Stefanovic and his wife Cassandra Thurburn.

This is a deeply personal story and one that should not play out on the front page of the Daily Mail website or any other publication.

However, the media can’t really be blamed here despite being an easy target.

Modern day journalism is, unfortunately, so often governed by what you and I are clicking and reading.

Editors don’t necessarily think Kim Kardashian buying a new pair of pants or posting a new selfie is quality news, but unfortunately we as readers do.

And as long as we keep clicking on stories we claim we don’t want to read, it’ll only get worse.

Think before you click – if you really want the media to focus on stories of more importance, start clicking on those more and the gossip trash less.

Detainees likely to be charged after latest incident at Cobham in St Marys JADE ALIPRANDI

everal staff members from Cobham Juvenile Justice Centre were allegedly assaulted by three detainees last Sunday afternoon, with one left hospitalised.

It’s alleged the trio assaulted a number of staff members before damaging property at the St Marys-based centre just before 12.30pm on Sunday, October 30.

A witness told radio station 2GB that a female youth worker was bashed and kicked in the head before she managed to crawl into a toilet and lock the door behind her.

Detectives from St Marys Local Area Command are still investigating the incident, with no charges laid yet.

“Police were told several inmates assaulted a number of staff members before damaging property,” a police spokesperson told the Weekender.

“The inmates were restrained by staff with several staff members treated at the scene for minor injuries and one taken to Nepean Hospital.”

A Juvenile Justice spokesperson confirmed on Monday there was an incident and that they were assisting police with their inquiries.

This is the second serious incident at the centre in the last three months after two inmates managed to climb onto the roof of one of the buildings and remained

fun night of trick-or-treating turned to horror on Monday night when a woman and her eightyear-old daughter were left with serious injuries after being hit by a car at Jordan Springs.

A learner driver was behind the wheel of a white utility when it mounted the gutter and struck the little girl and her 27-year-old mother about 6.45pm on Greenwood Parkway.

The vehicle then struck a parked car that was in a driveway outside a home.

The woman suffered pelvis injuries and was taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The girl suffered a head laceration and was taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

“The female learner driver and her adult male passenger were uninjured,” a Police spokesperson said.

“Police from Penrith Local Area Command are investigating the incident.”

Forensic officers also attended to examine the scene of the crash.

The front of a house was also damaged during the incident.

Crameri wants to put the brakes on Lakes trucks DALE DRINKWATER

proposal to allow trucks to enter the quarry at the Penrith Lakes Scheme from 6am has revved up Penrith Councillor Kevin Crameri.

“That means they will be starting an hour earlier than they are now,” he told the Weekender.

“You can’t mow your lawn before 7am in the morning, why should they be allowing truck movements in and out of the quarry from 6am?”

Cr Crameri discovered the Penrith Lakes Development Corporation’s (PLDC) application to extend the hours fill can be transported into the site through an advertisement in the Weekender.

It seeks to extend the weekday hours from 7am to 6pm, to 6am to 9pm, and on Saturdays to 6am to 3pm, from a current 7am to 1pm window.

No changes are proposed for the number of truck movements, and there will continue to be no work on Sundays and public holidays.

Cr Crameri said he has had next to no time to make a submission to the NSW Department of Planning, and wants an extension on the Friday, November 4 close date.

“I’m totally against it because they will have to have the quarry open and ready at 6am, which means they will have to begin in the quarry before 6am,” he said.

Residents in Waterside have already been affected by the quarry, according to Cr Crameri.

“People are saying now they are hearing noise and vibration at 3am in the morning.

That means they are doing work in there,” he said.

A spokesman for PLDC said the extension would allow trucks to avoid driving in peak hours while getting the same amount of work done.

“It’s in order to accommodate truck movements outside the hours everyone is trying to get to work and school,” the spokesperson said.

“Also, nothing goes on on that site after hours except security patrol checking gates, so it’s hard to understand any noise coming from there.”

He said over a year ago, PLDC applied to build an intersection at the north end of the lakes scheme that would allow access for trucks away from residential areas, which has not yet been approved.

As it currently stands, today (Friday) is the last day submissions can be made via www.majorprojects.planning.nsw.gov. au.

Police announce drink driving blitz this weekend NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol officers will be out in force conducting Random Breath Tests (RBT) and Random Drug Tests (RDT), and targeting driver behaviour in a three-day statewide operation.

Operation Drink Drive 2 started at 12.01am yesterday (Thursday, November 3) and will run through until 11.59pm on Saturday, November 5.

Over the course of the operation, police across the state will be maintaining high visibility, targeting dangerous driver behaviours including drink driving, drug driving, and speeding.

The current road toll stands at 332 lives lost in NSW this year, 42 more lives lost than this time last year.

Police have charged a man in regards to the break-in at Penrith Library two weeks ago.

The break-in was discovered by staff members of the library on the morning of Thursday, October 20.

Police officers were on the scene for most of the day investigating the circumstances around the break and enter, with the alleged culprit arrested last week.

Last Wednesday, October 26, detectives executed a search warrant at a residence on Jamison Road, Kingswood, and located a number of exhibits which were seized and retained for further examinations. “The next day, Thursday, October 27, a 28-year-old man was located and arrested in relation to the matter,� a police spokesperson said. “Police are continuing their investigations with this incident.�

The man was given strict bail conditions and is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Wednesday, November 23.

A man who allegedly threatened to set his mother alight during a heated argument has been denied bail.

Marc Robert Nicholson appeared before Penrith Local Court via audio visual link last Friday accused of throwing an explosive liquid with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The court heard the pair were feuding when the accused slammed down a bottle of methylated spirits he had been using as a “gavel”, spilling its contents on the victim.

Police will then allege the accused held up a lighter and pointed out “how easy” it would be to set “all this” on fire.

The accused denies holding a lighter or making the threat, with Mr Nicolson’s lawyer noting his client was also splashed with the flammable liquid and “any ignition would effectively ignite him, too”.

Magistrate Margaret McGlynn said she was not satisfied the defendant had shown cause why his detention was not justified and refused bail.

Nicolson was on bail at the time for ‘contravene AVO’ and common assault.

He is due back before court on November 25.

A Defqon.1 reveller found carrying ecstasy pills has been handed an 18 month good behaviour bond.

Joshua William Hyland-Manno, 21, appeared before Penrith Local Court last week charged with possessing four tablets of the prohibited drug at the annual music festival.

In a line of strategic questioning, Magistrate Greg Grogin rammed home the dangers of consuming the potentially deadly street drug, with the defendant admitting he couldn’t say who made the tablets or what exactly was in them.

“You, like many people, think if you jump in the harbour you won’t get wet,” Magistrate Grogin said.

“If you take drugs to a music festival, you’ll get caught.”

He escaped conviction due to his “youth and immaturity” and otherwise clean record.

“That’s the first and last time you’re going to get that opportunity in this court,” Magistrate Grogin warned.

Teenager performed burnouts to vent frustration

A P-plater caught doing burnouts has been barred from driving for 12 months.

Matthew Lawerence Sutherland fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with ‘drive manner dangerous’.

Magistrate Greg Grogin condemned the 19-year-old’s actions, labelling it “loutish, hoodlum behaviour”.

“When people do burnouts it just shows that they have nothing better to contribute to society,” he said.

The court heard the defendant had become frustrated at his inability to find a trade, leading to the commissioning of the crime.

A magistrate has urged a man facing armed robbery charges to seek legal advice or risk “years” behind bars.

Magistrate Alison Viney told Daniel Moon he faced an “extremely serious” strictly indictable charge which could see him serve significant time on the inside.

“Do you understand the matter could see you going to jail for many, many years?” she questioned.

Mr Moon, who fronted Penrith Local Court last Friday charged with ‘robbery armed with an offensive weapon’, told the court he didn’t think it was worth getting legal advice as he was pleading guilty. His matter was adjourned.

Magistrate labels man a “slow learner” over drink driving

A motorist detected drink driving for the fourth time has had his driving ban extended two months above the automatic period in a bid to stamp out the dangerous behaviour.

Guy Scott Larucci faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday after pleading guilty to low-range drink driving at Cranebrook on September 16.

Magistrate Greg Grogin told the fatherof-four he was lucky it wasn’t a higher reading or he would be looking at a term of imprisonment.

“Not much to say is there?” he said.

“You’re a very slow learner. Clearly you haven’t learnt your lesson.”

He was convicted, fined $700 and disqualified for eight months.

One-punch attack at club leads to long stint in jail

A one-punch perpetrator will spend at least the next 20 months behind bars after he was sentenced at Penrith District Court last week.

Corey Symons was handed a four year sentence with a non-parole period of two years after an altercation with an adversary turned violent at a licenced premises on Mulgoa Road.

The court heard the 27-year-old was at a mate’s buck’s night when the pair bumped into each other at the bar, reigniting their bad blood.

CCTV footage captures the two exchanging words moments before Symons strikes the victim in the face, bottle in hand, narrowly avoiding injury to his eye.

The victim suffered a “blow-out fracture” and required seven sutures but did not undergo surgery, the court was told.

Symons faced the District Court for sentence last Friday after a jury previously found him guilty of ‘wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm’.

His lawyer said his client had always conceded his role in causing the injuries and pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of

reckless wounding, but disputed whether he intended to cause grievous bodily harm.

During sentencing submissions, Judge Mark Buscombe flat-out rejected the defence’s argument that a sentence of less than two years was appropriate given Symons’ positive engagement in seeking help to address his “hand-trigger temper”.

Judge Buscombe cited the fact Symons was on bail for violence-related crimes at the time of the offence, the serious injuries inflicted upon the victim and the offender’s “very troubling” criminal record as the main reasons for his rigid stance.

“There is nothing you can say to persuade me otherwise,” he said.

In handing down his decision, Judge Buscombe rejected Symons’ claim that the victim had made threats to his family shortly before the attack, but said he was satisfied the victim said “something derogatory” to make the offender snap and spontaneously strike him.

“It is important to deter this offender and others from engaging in this conduct – striking of someone’s face in a licenced premises while holding a glass or bottle,” he said.

With time already served, he will be eligible for release on parole on May 31, 2018.

Magistrate urges man to be more careful before driving

A 24-year-old who failed a breath test at Kingswood has been banned from driving for four months.

Kuldeep Kuldeep fronted Penrith Local Court last week charged with low-range drink driving.

The court heard Mr Kuldeep had consumed two Jim Beam and cokes in quick succession before getting behind the wheel.

“Well you need to understand that you can’t just drink merrily and get in a car and drive,” Magistrate Greg Grogin said.

He was convicted and fined $600.

Werrington: Man arrested after incident on train

A man was charged after allegedly indecently assaulting a teenage girl on a train last week.

At about 2.15pm on Thursday, October 27, a 15-year-old girl boarded a train at Seven Hills Railway Station.

The girl sat down in the train when an unknown man approached her and sat next to her, before attempting to speak to her.

Police will allege the man kissed the girl on the neck before indecently assaulting her as the girl attempted to move away.

The girl left the train at St Marys Railway Station and spoke to officers from Police Transport Command, who commenced inquiries.

A 21-year-old man was arrested at Werrington Railway Station a short time later and taken to Penrith Police Station, where he was charged with ‘aggravated indecent assault’.

St Marys: Man faces multiple charges after routine stop

A man was charged after it was found his registration had expired, and that he had never held an Australian driver’s licence.

At about 8.40pm on Friday, October 28, police were patrolling Phillip Street, St Marys, when they had cause to stop a vehicle. Officers spoke with the 20-year-old Bidwill man who was driving the vehicle.

Checks made revealed the registration of the vehicle had expired and that the man had never held a licence.

He was charged with ‘never licenced person drive vehicle on road’, ‘use unregistered registrable Class A motor vehicle on road’, and ‘uninsured motor vehicle’.

Kingswood: Man’s swearing tirade extended to police

A man was charged with offensive language after he continued to swear at police last week.

At about 7.20pm on Friday, October 28,

police were called to a business premises in Kingswood.

On arrival police attempted to speak with a 49-year-old Riverwood man.

The man was in an enraged state, swearing profanities at the shop owner.

When removed by police he was asked to stop swearing but continued.

He was charged with ‘use offensive language in/near public place/school’ and is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Monday, November 21.

Penrith: Police to continue shoplifting operations

The Penrith Proactive Team ran a shoplifting operation last week, with several arrests made.

‘Operation Lightfingers’ targeted several major shopping centres in the Penrith area last Thursday, October 27.

Overall, 25 people were searched, 15 people were ordered to move on and six people received criminal infringement notices in relation to shoplifting.

Five people were charged after they were allegedly caught shoplifting.

Crime Manager at Penrith Police Station, Detective Acting Inspector Shane Wheeler said police will continue with their shoplifting operations.

St Marys: Woman to face court after drink driving bust

At about 2.40am on Sunday, October 30, police were conducting random breath testing in St Marys when they stopped a 23-year-old Colyton woman.

Police had a conversation with the driver and she was subjected to a roadside breath test.

It’s alleged she returned a positive sample. The driver was taken to Penrith Police Station where she underwent a breath analysis that returned a positive reading of 0.102.

The driver was charged with ‘drive with middle range PCA’.

She will appear at Penrith Local Court on Monday, November 21.

When reporting on legal cases, the media often refers to the Coroner or coronial inquests.

The purpose of this article is to provide you with a brief understanding of what a Coroner does, and how they fit into the legal system.

One of the most common scenarios where a coronial inquest occurs is in the case of missing persons.

This occurs when the police officer in charge of a missing persons investigation is satisfied that they have pursued all avenues of investigation and no further enquiries can be made by them as to whether or not a missing person is alive or dead.

The Coroner will then assess all of the factual information in relation to the missing person, and make a determination as to whether or not they believe the missing person is alive or dead. A Coroner cannot find someone guilty of a crime.

It is then up to the Director of Public Prosecutions whether or not charges will be laid against the said person.

Tragic case: “I hope my son’s face haunts you for the rest of your days” Justice looms: Bobby Webber’s attacker to be sentenced next month over horrifying assault JADE ALIPRANDI

lenmore Park mother Elise Webber bravely took the witness stand at Gosford District Court last Friday to recount the horror details of how her baby boy’s life was forever changed two years ago.

At just seven-months-old Bobby, affectionately known as ‘Bobby The Brave’, was abused by his non-biological uncle leaving him with multiple skull fractures, brain damage, burst blood vessels behind his eyes – from being violently shaken – and a fractured vertebrae.

“What happened to my son that night over a period of four hours while you abused my seven-month-old boy… has changed the outcome of our family forever,” Mrs Webber said in her victim impact statement, directed at the attacker.

“You have taken from Bobby the life he was supposed to have lived.

“I hope my son’s face haunts you for the rest of your days.”

The chapter still isn’t closed for the family after now two-and-half-year-old Bobby’s alleged abuser, Andrew Nolan, had his sentencing hearing adjourned until December due to incomplete applications from the defence for protective custody.

Mr Nolan, who was Mrs Webber’s sister’s fiancé at the time of the attack, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent earlier this year but has left the family without an explanation for the attack.

As a result of the injuries sustained by Bobby, he was diagnosed as a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy, epilepsy and cortical

visual impairment, meaning he is blind.

“All the dreams we had for our little boy were crushed,” Mrs Webber said.

“I will forever worry – I will forever worry about the life Bobby will have when his Dad and I are gone.

“He more than likely will never see my face again.”

The community continues to rally behind the Webber family.

The hearing has been rescheduled for December 2.

St Marys RSL Sub-branch Honorary Secretary, Tony Fryer, said locals can join for a minute’s silence at the newly rectified Guns War Memorial at St Marys RSL on Mamre Road.

“We will be starting at 10.40am, and there is plenty of parking in the RSL car park,” he said.

will be gathering at Memory Park on Woodriff Street, with parking available in both Judges and Union car parks.

Penrith RSL Sub-branch President, Mick McConnell, encourages people to arrive early to get settled before 11am.

Mr McConnell said while this year’s service will just be a regular service, he expects plenty to turn up, and hopes many will bring poppies.

“If you see a poppy or badge around and feel like purchasing a token for Remembrance Day you’re quite welcome, because it goes to a good cause,” he said.

Cash boost for schools across Penrith • Huge increase in Gonski funding • Every school in Penrith to benefit • Money caters to different needs DALE DRINKWATER

eeds-based Gonski funding for public schools in Penrith will increase next year, sharing an extra $3.5 million across our 21 primary and secondary schools.

The announcement by Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres last week brings the total 2017 Gonski allocation in Penrith to $11.9 million, with more funding going where it is needed most.

Cranebrook High School is receiving an extra $257,000 in 2017, bringing their total slice of the $219 million across NSW to $1.55 million.

Relieving Principal Craig Dunne said the extra funding will allow the school to hire more staff to work closer with the 800 students at the school.

“We can employ specialist teachers to come in and work with the kids and hire more support staff,” he said.

“That increase in staffing allows the kids to access their curriculum more, and boosts their skills.”

Each year, schools assess their needs and work out their focus strategies for funding to be allocated accordingly.

Mr Ayres said the needs at Cranebrook High are very different to the needs at Braddock Primary School next door, and the Government’s Resource Allocation Model (RAM) tailors to that.

“Every time the cohort changes in a school, the flexibility in this funding allows the school to prioritise what’s important to them,” he said.

“Cranebrook is a big school, so we expect it to be at the upper echelon of what the RAM money allocates.”

Kingswood Public School is to receive the second highest amount of RAM funding in 2017, increasing by $344,000 to $1.48 million.

Jamison High School is also in the millions at $1.07 million, an increase of $334,000.

Mr Ayres said every school in the Penrith

electorate has an increase in RAM funding in 2017, and no school has gone backwards.

“Each community has different types of students, and also has their own challenges and opportunities, but this is a fantastic injection of funds into local schools,” he said.

The funding can be used at the school’s discretion, in any way that improves the students’ outcome, academically and socially.

I note Stuart Ayres is quoted as saying there is a “little bit of scaremongering” over plans to build a maximum security prison at Emu Plains, and he is defending the Baird Government’s consultation process (Weekender October 28). Let me be clear that local residents do not need anyone to be scaremongering on their behalf – hands up all those local residents who want to live near a maximum security prison, presumably housing rapists, murderers, terrorists and

No maximum security It is definitely not acceptable that the Emu Plains Correctional Facility be turned into a maximum security prison. There are a number of schools within a short walk to it as well as children’s activity centres, a hotel, Emu Plains Station and a shopping centre. The whole impact on the social fabric in the area will be devastating, Old Bathurst Road will become more congested with traffic due to the coming and going of extra staff for the prison as well as the visitors of the inmates. Emu Plains Correctional Facility was originally and always meant to be a very low risk facility. I have been a resident of Emu Plains for 44 years and feel I have a right to continue living in this area with a sense of security that I have always felt.

NSW-first program is being offered in Penrith to help treat hoarding disorder.

The 16-week cognitive behavioural therapy group program has seen mental health consumers and clinicians work collaboratively to improve treatment outcomes.

Senior Clinical Psychologist, Dr Denise Milicevic, who works at the Nepean Anxieties Disorders Clinic, said it’s an important program due to the complexity of the illness.

“It’s such a vital program,” she told the Weekender.

“It provides participants with the opportunity to address this specialised disorder known as hoarding.

“A cost-effective program, it’s also an evidence-based program and involves an intensive phase of 16 weeks of two hour sessions followed by a monthly booster phase to help reinforce skills that are learnt in the program.”

By the end of the 16 weeks, participants develop an understanding of their own hoarding disorder and how it plays out in their own lives.

“It’s important right from the beginning,” Dr Milicevic said.

“There’s varying insights into their problems; they develop a better understanding into their hoarding difficulties, symptoms of hoarding, beliefs, thoughts they have around their possessions and how they attach to their possessions.”

Penrith ignored in Sydney re-think DALE DRINKWATER

ucy Turnbull and the Greater Sydney Commission (GSC) have bypassed Penrith as the heart of Sydney’s ‘Western City’, instead handing the coveted title to future development around the western Sydney airport.

At the Bradfield Oration last month, GSC Chief Commissioner Mrs Turnbull outlined the future three-city Sydney: an Eastern Harbour City around the current CBD, a Central River City at Parramatta and a Western City, around the new airport.

Penrith Council has long positioned Penrith as the heart of economic development in western Sydney due to its geographical location between growing areas in the north and south.

While Penrith Council agrees Sydney can no longer be viewed as one city, it has a different definition for the third, Western City.

“Sydney is the global city, Parramatta is the central city and the third city is the corridor between the North West and South West Growth Centres,” a Council spokesperson said.

“Penrith is the heart of this growth city, which we call the ‘New West’.”

“A metropolis of three great cities gives a clear picture of how we can realistically achieve the goal of people living within 30 minutes of where they work, study and play,” she said in a statement.

But Penrith Council said that won’t be achieved unless there are better transport networks, and areas north of the airport need to be included in that.

“The western Sydney airport ‘aerotropolis’ will not solve the region’s connectivity issues, alone,” the Council spokesperson said.

“The key to ensuring our region reaches its potential is to create a north to south rail link.

“Rail infrastructure will unlock the potential of the corridor and deliver and ensure inclusive and equitable growth in Sydney.

“We’re building a capital city and a capital city needs passenger rail.”

Penrith Council said they do welcome the Australian and NSW Governments’ commitment to a ‘City Deal’ for western Sydney, and look forward to the mayoral round table that will be held in coming weeks.

Unique design highlights new facility Construction underway on new state-of-the-art Community Hub at fast growing Jordan Springs DALE DRINKWATER

onstruction on the first public building in NSW that will use cross-laminated timber (CLT) got underway last week in Jordan Springs.

Masterplanned by Lendlease, the new state-of-the art Community Hub is a more sustainable and efficient form of construction, which will become the heart of the booming Jordan Springs.

“The Community Hub will have a range of multipurpose areas that will meet the education, social and recreational needs of the whole community,” General Manager of Lendlease’s Communities Business in NSW/ACT, Arthur Ilias said.

“The hub builds on Lendlease’s commitment to creating sustainable places with its CLT construction and environmental features that will underpin reduced energy and water consumption and more efficient heating and cooling than a traditional build.”

The hub will have solar power through a photovoltaic array on its roof, which will provide an annual reduction of 25.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide, equivalent to taking almost six cars off the road.

Penrith Mayor John Thain said Council values spaces and facilities like this for many reasons, but primarily because they bring people together.

“When construction is finished it will continue that legacy by providing the community with a modern and sustainable meeting place for generations to come,” he said.

A vision between Lendlease and Penrith City Council, the hub will add to other recent developments in Jordan Springs such as the Village Oval and accessible playground, Livvi’s Place.

“Livvi’s Place is a great example of government, not-for-profit organisations and developers working together for the benefit of, and with, the community,” Cr Thain said.

Once completed in late 2017, local community groups that currently use the Jordan Springs Community Corner, such as language and church groups, will be allowed to use the exciting new Community Hub.

Hotel set to bring tourists to St Marys DALE DRINKWATER

onstruction has begun on the multi-million dollar 123 room hotel at St Marys Rugby League Club, the St Marys Holiday Inn. Scheduled to open late 2017, the sixstorey hotel will have a gym, a business centre and meeting rooms just metres away from the St Marys Leagues Stadium and Skypeak Adventures.

St Marys Rugby League Club CEO, Rod Desborough, said the $18.7 million development is a partnership between the St Marys Rugby League Club, the InterContinental Hotels Group, and FDC Construction and Fitout.

“We are delighted to announce this new hotel which will be developed over the coming year,” he said.

“The support provided by InterContinental Hotels Group to date has been second to none and we are excited to partner with them in the build-up to opening and beyond.”

The combination of the St Marys Leagues Stadium, Go Bananas, Skypeak Adventures and the Holiday Inn St Marys at the one site will be rebranded as The St Marys Rugby League Complex.

She said the development was prompted by a struggle to attract events to St Marys Leagues Stadium.

“A hotel on the club’s site is considered integral to the club’s ability to continue to promote the game of rugby league and host competitions,” she said.

Visitors will be able to vote on artworks, with the favourites in both primary and secondary to receive ‘People’s Choice’ awards and prizes.

Lions Clubs around the globe recognise outstanding individuals by presenting them with an award that is named in honour of its founder, Melvin Jones.

The recipient of this award displays qualities that make them a model of exemplary service to their club and the community which it serves.

At a recent dinner hosted by Penrith Lions Club, current Emu Plains Memberships and Retention Manager, John Choma, was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award.

“We are extremely proud to have within our membership, an individual that has received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award,” Mr West said.

Extremely grateful for the award, Mr Choma was taken aback for a moment before thanking all for the award and their participation in a wonderfully memorable night for him personally.

Mr Choma has had a superb year having been awarded a Penrith City Council Australia Day Local Appreciation Award in January this year.

“The local community benefits by having an individual like John Choma amongst them,” Mr West said.

Special milestone for local school Llandilo Public School put on the festival of a lifetime last month to mark 150 years since the school first opened its doors.

Boasting over 330 students these days, the school started out small with just over 15 students, most of whom lived on the surrounding land the school was on.

“You couldn’t move through the crowd at some points during the day, that’s how many people came,” teacher Laura Jackson said of the event.

“It was excellent to see and it was amazing to meet the past students.”

Ms Jackson said the school has since converted an old classroom, the oldest one in the school, into a museum where artefacts will be housed.

“The committee worked really hard to collect these artefacts over time – there’s a book of names with all the students who have gone to the school, stories, letters, reports and other memorabilia that’s been donated too,” she said.

re you always sick and just can’t seem to get over it? Are you having trouble concentrating? Do you have a constant headache that just won’t go away? Are you having trouble sleeping well? Chances are you are over-stressed; and being a business owner, the likely cause of that stress is your business!

‘Stress’ is not an inherently bad thing.

When stress is within your comfort zone, it can help you to stay focused, energetic, and alert. It can help you perform under pressure, motivate you to do your best, and even keep you safe in dangerous situations. Stress is what keeps you alert during a presentation to a new client, or drives you to study for an exam.

But beyond your comfort zone, stress stops being helpful and can lead to a host of serious mental and physical health problems. The way most of us run our businesses these days, we can be so used to operating at a high level of stress that we don’t even realise the damage we are doing.

There are some daily things you can

do to alleviate your stress levels to a healthier, more sustainable level: • Move your body often. If you primarily sit at a desk, don’t sit for more than an hour. If your tasks involve a lot of standing, move to a different position or take a short walk outside.

• Listen to music that energises you and makes you feel good.

• Visualise your next holiday destination or your favourite place to relax.

This has the effect of switching your brain to a different ‘gear’ and can make you feel peaceful.

• Assess your diet and ensure you’re not ‘stress eating’. Many people crave sweet, empty calorie foods when they are stressed. Instead, ensure you are eating plenty of fruit/ veges, and drinking lots of water.

• Get enough sleep. For those of us with younger children, this can be easier said than done! But most of us are aware that good quality sleep is best had by going to bed well before midnight, and limiting the use of screens in the hours before bed.

n a recent broadcast of ‘Q & A’ on the ABC, Melbourne journalist, Grace Collier suggested that one way to find a job was to start a business. And at the Western Sydney Business Centre we see a lot of individuals who want to do just that.

They come to us with an idea and we help them assess the merit of that idea.

But even before then, you need to realise that running a small business is not a guaranteed cure to a finding a job.

The statistics related to start-up businesses are not encouraging.

A report issued earlier this year by the Australian Bureau of Statistics found that of the businesses starting in 2011-2012 period, over a quarter of them failed in the first year.

By the end of the third year, half of those new businesses had folded.

So how do you avoid this fate?

By assessing the feasibility of the product/service as it stands in your intended market. This means talking to people, letting people examine your product or experience your service.

To assess your feasibility identify the

costs of running the business and add them to your costs for living – e.g. groceries, clothing and health. If your business is capable of covering the total then it is financially feasible.

But is there a market out there?

Look at your product/service and determine who is likely to use it. Then talk to those people, interview them or offer a survey to complete.

In that survey, or in that conversation, ask them how much they would pay for the product/service, offer at least three prices or price ranges. If they don’t wish to buy ask them why.

A good pilot study is normally 20-50 people. The larger your target market, the more people you need to talk to.

Analyse those responses to gain information about price range to charge, features to include in the product/service, and a profile of the market.

So that you can enhance the appeal of your product and minimise the outgoing costs.

Do this, and you have a better chance at avoiding business failure in the first three years of operation.

She’s no one hit wonder

f you think Mya is just a singer who had a couple of hits in the 90s/00s you’d be sorely mistaken.

The Grammy Award winning R&B artist – who’s best known for featuring on the 2001 hit song ‘Lady Marmalade’ – has spent the last eight years running her own independent record label, Planet 9.

Since parting ways with major label Motown/Universal in 2007, Mya has been hard at work building up her business, which has spawned several projects including a series of EPs. The move from singer to head of an independent record label was a sharp learning curve for the artist.

“I kind of just fell into it when I took the independent route and I had to figure it out as I went along,” Mya said.

“Once you step into something you learn really quickly because it demands and it calls for you to know what to do, and if you don’t know what to do you have to figure it out ASAP. “It’s been very beneficial for me just to be knowledgeable about the processes and also respectful of the people who do hold very high positions in those roles.

“I can talk to them and relate to them more than I could before as just as artist.”

Though her schedule may be much

more hectic these days, Mya admits that the change has only helped when it comes to her music.

“I love the art and the craft of music and performing and dance a lot more because I have to constantly work to generate more work,” she said.

“Behind the scenes I’m on the computer every day as an agent, as a manager... and as someone who corresponds with producers and songwriters.”

On the music side of things Mya is no stranger to collaborations, having worked with big name artists including Christina Aguilera, Nicki Minaj and Snoop Dogg.

This month she’ll be sharing the stage with fellow R&B stars Blackstreet and 112 for an Australian tour which includes a show at the Evan Theatre at Panthers.

“As much as I like being on stage I also like watching other artists, it’s just such a treat for me to see others in their element,” Mya said.

Kids can head to The Creative Fringe tomorrow for some fun in a bow making workshop.

Held from 10am tomorrow, Saturday, November 5, the workshop will help children create two bows, one loop and one pinwheel.

Ice or heat? What’s the best way to treat an injury?

An injury can be very painful, but it’s important to know whether ice or heat is the best way to treat the problem...

There is a lot of confusion as to whether heat or ice should be used on injuries. It is important to note that both modalities serve a purpose and provide benefit for different situations.

Keeping this in mind it is important to understand what you’re trying to achieve so you can utilise the most appropriate modality.

Ice Physiologically ice causes blood vessels to narrow reducing blood flow to the area. This helps to soothe inflamed, hot, red and swollen tissues.

Acute inflammation can be uncomfortable to tolerate, so ice is a simple, drugless way to help numb pain from the inflammatory process.

However, it is important to remember that inflammation is a normal and essential biological process attempting to protect tissue by commencing the healing process.

You should always ice for a minimum of 20 minutes, the reason being, when soft tissue is exposed to ice or a temperature of under 10 degrees for 15 minutes or

longer a process called cold induced vasodilation occurs. This is known as the Hunting response. Cyclic periods of vasoconstriction and dilatation help to flush out swelling and fluids in acute injuries.

With chronic pain patients, ice can be applied when pain levels have been aggravated beyond normal day-to-day limits. It can also be useful with the management of headaches. Applying ice to the base of the neck when experiencing a headache can decrease blood flow to the head and stop a “throbbing” type feeling.

Heat In contrast to ice, heat stimulates blood flow to the area of application.

Heat is ideal to relax muscle tissue,

reduce aching type pain and decrease stiffness.

People who suffer with chronic or persistent pain will find benefit from applying heat as it helps to calm down aggravated tissues.

Due to the increase in blood flow from heat it also helps to eliminate waste or toxin build up such as lactic acid in the muscle.

The amount of time heat should be applied depends on the type and magnitude of the injury, but as a general rule the longer you keep heat on the better!

Heat does not have the same numbing affect as ice, however it does provide comfort and relief from pain.

Preparing your dog to meet your new household addition A new baby is an exciting addition to a household, but for a dog, it can be a confusing and anxious time...

For the last few weeks we have been discussing children and dogs. Last week’s article was about preparing puppies for a happy, long term relationship with children. It’s great when puppies and kids grow together but sometimes we are faced with the situation of introducing babies around adult dogs.

This week we will discuss preparing the adult dog for a new baby.

The first thing to consider is the dog’s temperament; any type of aggressive or fearful behaviour – even if mild or subtle (such as growling or pricking ears back) should be addressed by a professional (such as a veterinary behaviourist) well before the baby arrives.

Some thought should be given into preparing the family dog before the arrival of the new baby.

Dogs are likely to become anxious if the routine, environment or the way the family interacts with the dog changes.

Therefore, gradual adjustments should be made before the baby arrives. Feeding, exercise, play schedules as well as sleeping/resting areas and any new routines/

rules will need to be slowly introduced well ahead of the baby’s arrival. This gives time for the dog to adjust to the changes and also time for you to train your dog.

It is important that your training focuses on positive reinforcement – this means rewarding good behaviour and ignoring bad behaviour.

So if you are trying to train your dog that the baby room is off limits, it is important to ignore the dog when it decides to go into the baby room and reward the dog with treats and attention when it decides

to explore other rooms of the house. If the family is consistent with their responses, the dog should quickly learn those behaviours that are rewarded and those that are not.

The dog should also be prepared for the homecoming by exposing him/her to the noises and smells of the new baby. If the dog becomes frightened or anxious when it hears strange sounds, a recording of baby noises can be used as a part of a desensitisation and counterconditioning program; this may involve playing the noises at very low volume and giving the dog treats and slowly increasing the volume over a matter of weeks. A towel or blanket with the baby’s scent can also be taken home to prepare the pet for the new smells.

Some dogs can also become anxious when the mother carries and nurses a noisy baby. It is a good idea to practice with a doll and see how the dog responds.

If the dog becomes anxious, try and make a positive association with the doll by giving the dog food rewards and attention every time it sees the doll and the mother nursing it.

How long will it take my child to learn to swim?

Swimming lessons are an important part of growing up, but how long does it take the average child to master the skills they need to stay safe?

We are very lucky in this country, in that the importance of learning to swim as one of the main cornerstones to water safety is something we are generally fairly well educated about. But I am often asked ‘How long will it take for my child to learn to swim?”.

Every child is different, but learning to swim is a long term, ongoing process, and consistency is the key to the development and maintenance of swimming skills.

Attending lessons should become an established part of your child’s weekly routine throughout their infant, preschool and early school years, all year round.

As with any skill, it is normal for the child to go through periods of plateau, regression and developmental leaps throughout the process of learning to swim, but over time constant progress is being made.

We usually say (as general guide) that your child has become a capable swimmer when they are able to swim 400 metres with good technique, without stopping,

and without becoming exhausted.

Of course, this level of swimming skill takes different amounts of time for individual children to reach, and depends largely upon how much time your child spends in the water per week.

To fast track your child’s progress, or to catch up after time off, a week long intensive program or multiple lessons per week are recommended. The benefits of multiple lessons include rapid improvement of swimming skills and technique,

resulting in quicker progression through the Learn To Swim levels, increased fitness, and making swimming lessons even more affordable (we offer from 40 – 90 per cent off second and subsequent lessons per week).

It is important to remember that swimming is not just another option on the list of sports and activities available to children – it is an invaluable lifelong skill that may just save their lives.

Making changes to your diet is a very worthy goal to set.

Unfortunately with so much conflicting information it can be easy to think you’re making healthier choices when you’re not.

This week I thought I’d run through some of the common mistakes people make and how to avoid them.

Cutting out all your favourite ‘junk’ foods There is absolutely nothing wrong with eating a donut every now and then. In fact, cutting out the foods you love altogether is the perfect trigger for a future binge session.

No matter how many people tell you they have the answer to a healthy diet the best approach always remains the same; eat mostly nutritious foods with the occasional treat and you’ll be doing well.

Thinking all salads and sandwiches are healthy It always pays to be wary when ordering lunch from places that sell salads, wraps and Turkish bread sandwiches.

While these stores are a great place to grab a healthy meal, some of the ingredients are just as high in calories, fat and sugar as a fast food burger.

If you’re aiming for a nutritious option look for meals that include lots of salad, veggies or beans, and keep white breads, cheese, creamy sauces and fatty meats to a minimum.

Going overboard with juices and smoothies Not all juices and smoothies are created equal. Some can contain as much, if not more, calories and sugar than a main meal. Smoothies are particularly bad offenders as they often contain large amounts of milk, yoghurt and ice cream.

While this is fine for the occasional treat, for the best everyday option look for juices that contain vegetables as well as fruit, this will keep the calorie and sugar content down.

Following a diet If I told you I could offer a long term weight loss solution but it only has a five per cent success rate would you do it?

Unfortunately those are the dismal stats on dieting. Most people who diet regain any lost weight, and sometimes end up heavier than when they started.

The best way to improve your health is with small, sustainable lifestyle changes.

If you can’t maintain something for life then it’s probably not the best option.

This means that even in the face of the worst news, Christian people are able to rest firm on the real, certain, confident

hope that is found in Jesus. One of the great joys of being united to Jesus, of being able to trust in the God who keeps His promises is not that we escape hardship, but that our hope in Jesus gives us a firm anchor for our soul!

It is an anchor that holds us fast even in the most troubling of times.

hen Panthers asked its fan base what look, design and colours best captured the club’s identity, the response was undeniable.

“This is the jersey you wanted,” Panthers Executive General Manager, Phil Gould declared of the new throwback design.

“We will respect our past as we set about creating our future – and this is the jersey that will carry us forward.”

This week the Panthers unveiled one of their most highly anticipated jersey designs in decades, throwing back to a memorable era that not only shaped the club itself but the town it represented.

A black ‘home’ and white ‘away’ strip were released on Wednesday night, that will see the club return to the golden days of the ‘Liquorice Allsorts’ – where the likes of Alexander, Geyer and Simmons led Penrith to its maiden premiership more than 25 years ago.

For six years – from 1991 to 1996 – black with white, red, yellow and green stripes

was synonymous with Penrith both on and off the field.

In 2017, those colours will return and, most likely, will be here to stay.

“You know in 50 years here at Panthers we’ve had over 50 jerseys,” Gould said.

“Now wouldn’t it be nice to have just one jersey for the next 50 years.

“I don’t know if that is possible but this is where we need to start.”

After a lengthy consultation process with fans and stakeholders earlier this year, the club discovered that most rugby league supporters associate the Panthers brand

with the classic colours of the early 1990s.

“We asked the question – what look best captures our identity? What design most embodies our Panther Pride? What are the colours that truly define us?” Gould said.

“Your response was undeniable. This is the jersey you wanted.

“This is the jersey we will aspire to. This is the jersey we will fight for.

“We are the Panthers. And these are our colours.”

The Panthers played in one-off 50th anniversary jerseys for the 2016 NRL season, which have now been retired.

ew Leonay Golf Club head professional Corinne Kelleher is proud to be one of only a few females in Sydney in her pro-

fession.

Kelleher, who began her new position at the popular local course on Monday, will look after a host of duties as head professional at Leonay including managing the Pro Shop, course bookings, organising corporate days and competitions, conducting golf lessons, and even repairing golf clubs.

Speaking with the Weekender, Kelleher said a golf club employing a female head professional was quite rare.

“There are two others in Sydney who are head professionals running their own business like me but there is also a couple of others out there that are working in employed roles, so it is very rare,” she said.

Kelleher successfully applied for the role at Leonay after seeing the position advertised on the PGA of Australia website.

She also knows the local courses very well too, having worked at both Penrith Golf Club and Dunheved Golf Club in the past.

“I’m also no stranger to Leonay Golf Club… when I was a trainee professional I actually had my first ever professional win here many years ago,” Kelleher revealed.

“Things have well and truly gone full circle.”

While she has been welcomed with opened arms by Leonay’s members during her first week on the job, Kelleher knows there is plenty of work to be done to make her new home the premier golf club in town.

Not only will the Pro Shop be brimming with new stock and equipment but plans are also in the pipeline to bring Pro-Am events and junior clinics to Leonay too.

“I’m also really passionate about women’s golf and I think there is a great opportunity to increase women’s participation at Leonay,” Kelleher said.

“I’ve also worked for Jack Newton Junior Golf and I’m very interested in getting more junior clinics out here too.”

For the second straight week the Wanderers gave up a second half lead, despite being well in control of the match.

In front of 12,000 fans at Spotless Stadium, the Wanderers led Central Coast after two minutes before a 61st minute goal to the Mariners saw both sides take home a point.

“We had numerous opportunities but unfortunately we couldn’t put the game to bed,” Popovic said.

“It will be nice to put someone away and we will put someone away soon if we keep playing that way.”

The Wanderers will now travel to Perth to battle the Glory this Sunday night, looking for their second win of the season.

After narrowly winning the semi-final by one point, Kilbourne’s Intermediate side stamped their authority during the final stages of the grand final to win by 15.

“We played McCarthy Catholic College from Tamworth in the final, which was a repeat of the final from two years previous in the junior division,” Kilbourne said.

“Despite the final scoreline, it was a tough game. We were down 10-2 early on but managed to pull through.”

As a reward for their victories this year, next month both the Intermediate and Opens teams will travel to Melbourne to compete against some of the best schools in the country at the Australian Schools Championship.

While St Dominic’s have never won a national title in basketball, this year’s incredible success at State level may prove to be a good omen.

“This is our 13th year at Nationals, it’s a massive step up and a reward from the continued success at State level,” Kilbourne said.

“We have some practice games planned against local representative teams.”

In a blockbuster fixture for footy fans, GWS will play their first ever Friday night game against reigning premiers the Western Bulldogs in the nation’s capital on April 28, before featuring in the coveted Friday night slot a further two times during the regular season.

GWS will open their 2017 campaign against the Adelaide Crows away before playing their first Sydney home game against the Gold Coast Suns at Spotless Stadium on Saturday, April 1.

Released last week, Giants CEO David Matthews welcomed the 2017 AFL Premiership Season fixture.

“This is an exciting fixture and sees the Giants given greater exposure with more primetime and free-to-air games than ever before,” he said.

“On the back of making the finals for the first time and proving to be one of the highest rating teams at the back end of this season, we’re delighted to be playing three games in the marquee slot of Friday night.”

Blue Sox focus on premiership dream he Australian Baseball League (ABL) heads into its seventh season this summer but, after five finals appearances in six years, the Sydney Blue Sox are yet to yield a Championship.

Into his fifth year at the helm of the Blue Sox, Manager Jason Pospishil, born and bred in Penrith, is driven to end the drought.

“The championship drought is something we are working hard to break every year,” Pospishil said.

“We have had a little bad luck in past years or we have been one piece away, but it’s not something that you can lose sleep over.”

A former student at St Dominic’s College in Kingswood, Pospishil is passionate about growing local talent for the Sydney Blue Sox and baseball across NSW. In the off-season, he holds the role of High Performance Manager with Baseball NSW, focused on player pathways and development, coaching and the overall growth of the game.

“We have always prided ourselves on giving young talent a shot in the ABL rather than spending money on free agents,” Pospishil said.

“Guys like Zac Shepherd and Jacob Younis have been solid contributors at this

level and these kind of players will be our core for the future.”

In addition to the wealth of local talent across the state, importing talented players and prospects from international leagues adds immense value to the squad.

Pospishil identifies the importance of integrating overseas players into the squad.

“We have exciting prospects lined-up for the season, which will bring another dynamic to the club,” he said.

Individual growth and experience is another important goal for Pospishil. With stints in Japan, USA and abroad he feels there is always room to learn, adapt and improve at a personal level.

For the Blue Sox and their fan base, there is a sense of belief for the upcoming season. The elusive Championship beckons and Pospishil has taken a philosophical approach to what lies ahead.

“I’ve been so impressed at the shape all the boys are in and their performances so far in spring have been great,” Pospishil said.

“At the end of the day, you prepare to the best of your ability.”

“It is very much to our club’s advantage to pick up such a high-calibre footballer for great value just prior to the commencement of our off-season training program,” he said.

“Mitch is a representative-class player and will provide our roster with tremendous depth and competition in key positions. I’d also like to think this could turn into a long-term association down the track.”

Despite his former coach Paul McGregor championing his State of Origin chances earlier this year, Rein had been struggling to find a new deal for 2017 before the Panthers came knocking.

Ironically, Rein’s signing came as news broke about an off-season hand injury suffered by Wallace.

The 31-year-old required surgery, but is expected to return to training in December and be fit for the start of the season.

ayne Peckham, who played in the inaugural Penrith Panthers first grade side in 1967, has passed away aged

72.

Peckham, officially listed as the ninth player to wear the Panthers jersey in the top grade, died last week.

The Panthers paid tribute to the foundation player on social media.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends,” the club said on Twitter last Friday.

Peckham made 41 appearances for Penrith between 1967 and 1969 before joining Canterbury in 1970. He scored 18 tries over his six seasons in top grade football.

Peckham returned to Penrith Stadium earlier this year, when the club paid tribute to its 1967 team in round two.

He primarily played in the centres and

Peckham was originally from Moree and had played for Northern NSW against the 1966 touring Great Britain team, before coming to the attention of the Panthers.

CRICKET: Penrith’s undefeated run has come to an end, defeated by Manly-Warringah in Round 4 of the NSW Premier Cricket competition.

Playing in a one day match at LM Graham Reserve, Penrith took to the crease first and were dismissed for 166. Ryan Gibson topscored for Penrith with 59 runs.

When Manly-Warringah hit the crease later that afternoon, they chased down Penrith’s target with ease scoring 1/168. Josh Lalor took Penrith’s only wicket with 1/29.

Penrith will look to bounce back this weekend when they travel to Petersham Oval to battle Randwick Petersham.

BASEBALL: The Penrith Panthers first grade side enjoyed mixed results against Manly in Round 7 of the NSW State Baseball League.

In the mid-week game last Wednesday, Manly defeated Penrith 11-8, while last Sunday Penrith got one back, winning 7-6.

Penrith have the bye in Round 8.

GRIDIRON: The Nepean Ducks continue their excellent form, hammering the Newcastle Cobras 54-26 in Round 9 of Gridiron NSW Division 1 competition.

The emphatic win sees the Ducks qualify for the playoffs for the first time. This Saturday the Ducks will aim for three straight wins when they battle Northwestern.

BASKETBALL: The Penrith Basketball Association have announced their coaches for next year’s representative season with Steve Sardi named Youth League Men’s coach while Leonie Moore will once again take the reigns of Youth League women.

Moore will be aiming for back to back championships after she took her Division 1 team to Grand Final glory this year.

NETBALL: Netball Australia have confirmed that Giants Netball will open their 2017 National Netball League account on home soil against local rivals NSW Swifts at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre on Saturday, February 18.

“This is a huge moment for everyone associated with Giants Netball and I am both delighted and hugely excited that we get to start our campaign in our own backyard,” Head Coach, Julie Fitzgerald said.

Netball Australia is yet to confirm the remainder of the 2017 fixture, which will consist of a 14-round regular season, plus an additional three weeks of Finals to follow.

t Dominic’s College has achieved a feat no other school in the state has ever done before by being crowned champions in three Combined Catholic College (CCC) State Basketball Finals all in the one year.

Last month the Kingswood-based high school took out the Junior (Years 7 and 8) and Intermediate (Years 9 and 10) CCC State titles while earlier this year St Dominic’s also won the Opens (Years 11 and 12) competition.

Speaking with the Weekender, Intermediate basketball coach and PDHPE teacher Jeff Kilbourne said it was a remarkable effort by everyone involved.

“I think it’s a combination of dedicated staff and coaches but also a great culture that exists within the student body,” he said.

“The boys have an eagerness to train hard and they come from supportive families – all of this is testament to our success.”

St Dominic’s qualified for the CCC State Finals after winning the Metropolitan Catholic Schools regional competitions earlier this year.
