olice believe a Glenmore Park woman was specifically targeted in a bizarre and frightening attack that left her bound and gagged in her home on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old woman was in a stable condition at Nepean Hospital when the Weekender went to print on Wednesday evening.

The woman was found when emergency crews responded to a 000 call made from inside the house at around 2am on Wednesday morning.

Nobody spoke to the 000 operator but the address was successfully traced to Muru Drive.

The woman was found by paramedics in a semiconscious state with a phone close by but it is unknown who made the initial phone call.

Superintendent Brett McFadden, Commander of Penrith Police Station, told the media on Wednesday morning that the investigation is still in its early stages.

“We are currently treating this as a targeted attack,” Superintendent McFadden said.

“Based on the condition she was found in, it is a serious crime.

“She has suffered physical injuries and has had only the initial assessments at hospital so far.”

Police believe the incident occurred at some point between 4.00pm on Tuesday, November 3 and 2.00am on Wednesday, November 4.

Officers investigating the incident are waiting on medical reports to determine the extent of the woman’s injuries.

Superintendent McFadden said at the time the woman was found, she was on her own.

Medical trial offers glimmer of hope Local families applaud State Government move to back medicinal cannabis trial from next year DALE DRINKWATER

Mrs Edwards was informed by the pair that in a world first trial, her daughter Bethany could access medicinal cannabis from 2016.

Five-year-old Bethany has suffered from severe seizures since she was 18-monthsold, and the trial finally means relief for her and her family.

“The potential difference that medicinal cannabis can make to a family like mine is enormous. People don’t see the daily struggle and worries that impact on every part of family life,” Mrs Edwards said.

With ongoing seizures and on multiple medications, Bethany is constantly in and out of hospital.

Mrs Edwards said the trials can’t come soon enough.

“Whilst medications can work to some extent, there are so many side effects – from low immunity and blood cell count, to depression, poor liver function, and weight gain,” she said.

The State Government has signed a $3.5 million commitment with Britain’s GW Pharmaceuticals to supply medicinal cannabis, Epidiolex, and in a world first,

trial Cannabidivarin for children with paediatric epilepsy.

Ms Goward described the announcement as one of the proudest days of her career.

“Bethany isn’t alone, other children across NSW are also suffering severe drug resistant epilepsy,” she said.

“I was extremely proud to stand with Premier Baird to announce the signing of an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with GW Pharmaceuticals that will allow for a major new research program for cannabis-based medicines here in NSW.” Carol Ireland, CEO of Epilepsy Action Australia, said families of children with epilepsy have been aware of the benefits of medicinal cannabis for some time, but were unable to secure a legal source to help their children.

“Many are aware that not all children will respond to medicinal cannabis however, all they are asking for is the opportunity to try it, seeking that glimmer of hope for better seizure control and quality of life,” she said.

“These trials for medicinal cannabis, one being a world first for children with paediatric epilepsy, are an extremely important step towards alleviating suffering for many children and families.”

Shorten’s teenage dream Finally, somebody has listened to those Year 10, 11 and 12 students in the playground who have been demanding to be able to vote in Federal Elections.

Ever since Tony Abbott got the flick, 16-year-olds around the nation have been champing at the bit, desperate to get into the polling booth to vent their frustrations at the current political climate.

Ask any teacher and they’ll tell you that discussions about 18th birthday parties and formal dresses have been replaced by debates about free trade agreements and just who broke that table on the night Abbott was overthrown.

I hear that recently, 17-year-olds ignored ‘The Bachelorette’ finale because David Speers was hosting a political year in review special on Sky News.

Come on Bill, is that the best you’ve got?

Younger people should indeed be more aware of the political process, but let’s concentrate on improving the knowledge of those young people who can vote, before we start allowing 16 and 17-year-olds into the voting booth.

18-year-olds, 19-year-olds and even some in their 20s are completely ignorant when it comes to politics.

Convince them to take a greater interest, and connect with them beyond just appearing on FM radio in the weeks prior to an election, and maybe then we can talk about going even younger.

Mal’s GST gamble It’s a big week for punting so maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that Malcolm Turnbull may take a huge gamble and put a five per cent rise to the GST on the table at the next election.

It’s smart work from Turnbull to have us talking about this now.

Had the idea of a GST rise backfired, Turnbull is so popular at the moment that he could have recovered well before the next election, especially considering the political and media slate is often wiped clean during the Christmas break.

But if the public is at least willing to listen, then it gives Turnbull an extended period to sell the wares of a new GST rate.

And if Labor persists with the unpopular Bill Shorten as alternative Prime Minister, Turnbull may just be able to convince the electorate that they should give the green tick to the GST rise.

Let’s just hope there’s no TV interviews about birthday cakes during the campaign.

Labor says it will oppose any rise to the GST, and that will be the obvious first instinct of mums and dads out there too.

But let’s wait to hear the full story, the benefits and the ramifications before we make a final decision on whether it’s a good idea or simply one that will put too much pressure on the wallets of everyday Australians.

Idris the latest Panther casualty Jamal Idris is perhaps the only person who will get what he wants this week, with Penrith granting him a release from the final year of his contract Idris’ time at Penrith was always going to end in tears.

He is a talented footballer whose personal demons will perhaps stop him from ever realising his true potential.

The decision made on Monday to release Idris was, it would seem, in the best interests of both the club and Idris himself, who clearly needs some time away from the game to sort out what he wants out of his future.

Idris’ departure is unlikely to have a huge impact on Penrith’s preparations for the 2016 NRL season.

Disruptive, yes. But fatal? Hardly.

There’s still plenty to like about the Panthers’ chances in 2016.

Perhaps the departure of Idris is an important piece in the puzzle.

female police officer was punched in the head and another officer was affected by OC spray during a violent arrest in Penrith this week.

At around 12.30pm on Monday, November 2, police were called to Illawong Avenue after residents raised concerns about a man who was shouting loudly in Stewarts Park.

Two police officers, both in their late 20s, attended the scene and spoke to the man who was allegedly behaving in an erratic manner.

The man allegedly became aggressive and assaulted the female officer by punching her in the head.

Officers were forced to deploy OC spray to arrest the man, with the male officer accidentally affected by the spray.

Ambulance paramedics arrived at the location just a short time later to attend to the officers. Neither officer was required to go to hospital.

The female officer sustained minor cuts and bruising to her face.

Both officers returned to duty at Penrith Police Station later that day.

The 28-year-old man was arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station. He is likely to face a range of charges.

Penrith: Cars destroyed by suspicious fire

Penrith: Man refused bail on firearms charges

Emergency services were quick to respond to several calls made in the early hours of Saturday morning in regards to four vehicles on fire in Penrith.

Just before 3.30am on Saturday, October 31, emergency services were alerted to a fire on Derby Street in Penrith following multiple calls to Triple Zero (000).

Residents of the three-storey unit block were evacuated but fire fighters from Fire and Rescue NSW were able to prevent the blaze from spreading.

A full investigation is underway into the cause of the fire.

Investigators from Penrith Local Area Command are treating the fire as suspicious.

A police spokesperson confirmed that a discarded jerry can was found in the area and will now undergo forensic examination.

Officers are appealing for information.

A man was charged last week after he was found to allegedly be supplying firearms.

Strike Force Kindlebark, established by detectives from the State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad, investigates the supply of firearms and prohibited drugs.

Following extensive investigations by the Strike Force, a 38-year-old man was arrested at a residence on Peachtree Road in Penrith last Thursday, October 30.

The Penrith man was taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with ‘supply prohibited firearm’.

His bail was refused. He is due to reappear at Penrith Local Court on Friday, January 15.

Investigations into the matter are still continuing.

The male may be able to assist police with their inquiries in regards to a number of home robberies in the Glenmore Park area over the past two weeks.

Colyton: Witnesses needed after service station robbery Police are urging any witnesses to come forward after an armed robbery at a service station in Colyton on Monday.

At about 10.45pm on Monday, November 2, two men entered a service station on The Great Western Highway and produced a firearm. A male employee who was working at the time was allegedly threatened.

The pair allegedly demanded cash from the register and cigarettes.

The employee handed them an amount of cash and a small amount of cigarettes before the duo fled the area.

Police established a crime scene and are now conducting inquiries into the incident.

sthma sufferers should have their triggers managed before heading outdoors this summer with a specialist at Nepean Hospital warning asthmatics of a difficult season ahead.

Staff specialist in Nepean Hospital’s Department of Respiratory Medicine, Dr Benjamin Ng, said there are common triggers of asthma for different seasons.

“Firstly, for most people triggers are only a problem when their asthma is not well-managed,” Dr Ng said.

“Cold air as well as people with a cold or the flu are potential triggers in the cooler months with higher pollen levels and pollution from bushfires potential triggers during spring and summer.”

One in 10 people in Australia suffer from asthma, either intermittent or persistent.

Dr Ng said people should identify their triggers early on.

“It may be useful for you to identify your triggers and reduce exposure to them if you have troublesome asthma symptoms despite treatment or you need high doses of medication to keep your asthma symptoms under control,” he said.

man has been left a little red faced after crashing his sports car on Sunday morning in Colyton.

Emergency services were called to Roper Road in Colyton after reports a car had crashed into a ditch.

Ambulance paramedics and firefighters arrived to find a single vehicle partially in a ditch on the side of the road.

The driver is believed to have lost control of his Chrysler Crossfire before mounting a gutter, hitting a power pole and coming to rest in a ditch.

The driver managed to exit his vehicle before emergency services arrived.

Ambulance paramedics assessed the driver on scene, but he did not require transport to hospital.

Remembrance Day

Retracing footsteps of the past Historic march to stop by Penrith this weekend for special services and commemorations DALE DRINKWATER

n October 10, 1915, a group of 26 men left the small town of Gilgandra in New South Wales’ west on foot, heading for Sydney some 515 kilometres away.

A feat in itself, the expedition was made more spectacular when by the time the men arrived in Sydney on November 12, the numbers had snowballed to 263 men.

The ‘Coo-ee March’ recruited hundreds of men who volunteered to fight for Australia in the First World War, despite knowing the casualty rate since it began in 1914.

The march passed through regional towns including Penrith, shouting “coo-ee” to attract recruits and holding recruitment meetings, before finishing in the city.

This weekend as part of the 100 year anniversary of ANZAC commemorations, the Coo-ee March, the first of its kind, will be re-enacted and will grace Penrith’s streets once again.

On Saturday, November 7, the re-enactment march will enter Penrith at the Great Western Highway near Lennox Bridge and participants will camp overnight at the

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said she was looking forward to participating in the commemorative events that recognise the commitment and efforts of the WW1 soldiers.

“In this the Centenary of ANZAC and Penrith’s bicentenary year, we are proud to be welcoming this re-enactment of such a significant historical event to the city,” she said.

“This occasion gives our community the opportunity to honour the dedication of marchers, and celebrate the strength and support of the people of Penrith.”

Commemorations of the young men who

stepped into the ranks of the “Coo-ees” will take place throughout Penrith, before arriving in the Sydney CBD by Remembrance Day on November 11.

The current re-enactment has been a huge success with participants warmly welcomed into each town they visit.

orraine Roberts, of St Marys, is putting out a desperate plea for her irreplaceable items to be returned to her after four World War II service medals were stolen, ahead of Remembrance Day. While she was just around the corner at her daughter’s house celebrating her grandson’s birthday last Wednesday, October 28, Ms Roberts was robbed.

Somewhere between 3.30pm and 6.30pm, thieves broke into her St Marys home and stole her father’s service medals and her mother’s colonial jewellery.

“I was just devastated when I realised what had been taken,” Ms Roberts said.

“I walked into the house and noticed that I had forgotten to shut the bedroom door but then I turned around and saw the computer room door was also open.

“I then walked past the bathroom and saw the fly screen had been cut open and the lock on the window had been tampered with, and that’s when I knew I had been robbed.”

Ms Roberts said she walked into her bedroom and found her things were scattered all over the bed and a locked drawer in her wardrobe was forced open.

“I never thought I would react the way I did when I had seen things from that drawer had been taken,” Ms Roberts said.

“I just stood out the front of my house and cried and cried.

“I just want my items returned – whatever they still have they need to return it to me.”

t 11am, on the 11th day of the 11th month, communities across Australia sound the ‘Last Post’ for Remembrance Day. The service is to commemorate this moment in 1918, when the Germans asked to stop fighting to settle for peace, and the guns on the Western Front fell silent after four years of warfare.

That moment when hostilities ceased became the universal moment to remember the 70 million people affected by war and the 11 million that lost their lives.

There will be several events across the local region on Wednesday, November 11, that will pay tribute to this important moment in history for the 97th time since 1919.

Around 200 people are expected to attend commemorations adjacent to the entrance of the St Marys RSL from 10.40am.

St Marys RSL sub-Branch Honorary Secretary, Tony Fryer, said the day will remember the 102,804 people that died, but also their families.

“It is significant for anyone who wishes to remember someone they know, or just make a general reflection on those who have given their lives over the many years of conflict,” he said.

“It’s primarily to remember those who have suffered as a result of military conflict, so it’s not just those in uniform.

“It’s also civilians, people back home, and the families of those who didn’t come home, from the First World War to Afghanistan.”

The Penrith RSL sub-Branch will hold

a service at Memory Park on Woodriff Street, Penrith.

Penrith RSL sub-Branch’s Peter Todd said while it’s important to remember those who lost their lives in early warfare, we need to remember those who are still fighting today.

“We will remember those soldiers that went through all the different conflicts.

We don’t just remember the ones in the past, but we think about the ones in Afghanistan and Iraq right now,” Mr Todd said.

Mr Todd is a veteran himself, and while he hasn’t served overseas, he feels deeply for survivors affected by warfare.

“I served for 20 years but never went overseas, as conflict was before and after my time. However, I have sadly seen the amount of medical and mental affects on people from war,” he said.

Locals want to make a splash Glenmore Park residents call for water play area ahead of long, hot summer JADE ALIPRANDI

lenmore Park residents are calling for a water play area for children to be installed in the suburb.

With summer fast approaching, a petition has secured over 500 signatures and asks Penrith City Council to consider implementing the play area.

Mother of three children and resident of Glenmore Park, Jessica Lowe, started the petition in the hope it would gain a following from other locals in the area, saying she didn’t hear a response back from Council after she emailed them.

“We spend a lot of time in playgrounds and in summer particularly, it gets really hot,” Ms Lowe said.

“There aren’t many options for places to take the children and with so many families in Glenmore Park, it would be nice to have a facility like a ‘splash pad’ near us that is easily accessible.”

Ms Lowe said the closest water parks are in Blacktown, Werrington or Thornton.

In good news for Ms Lowe and other residents, Penrith City Council told the Weekender there are plans to build more water splash parks in the area, with no finish date specified as yet.

“There are currently two splash pads in the City with a third and fourth on the way,” a Council spokesperson said.

“Council has constructed a splash pad with shade at Werrington Lake with the second located at Thornton, currently managed and maintained by the developers, but it will be handed over to Council in the near future.”

Council also has plans to install a splash pad in Pacific and Phoenix Reserve in Erskine Park at this stage.

Investigations will begin shortly into a water play facility in each Council ward.

“Glenmore Park would be considered along with other areas in South Ward, however, no funding has been identified as yet,” the spokesperson said.

“Overall, we are putting a strong focus into upgrading our playgrounds with Council recently upgrading a playground at Tench Reserve as well as the playground at Ched Towns Reserve.”

Ms Lowe said she hopes the ‘splash pad’ for Glenmore Park won’t be too far off.

“If everyone went to the same water play areas that are currently in the Penrith area, there wouldn’t be enough space – I just hope these plans for Glenmore Park won’t be too far off from being put into action,” she said.

lmost 40,000 school-aged children across Penrith can access free travel from 2016, with the launch of a student School Opal card.

Local kids are just a fraction of the 420,000 NSW students who will be able to travel between home and school for free from the start of the school year.

Minister for Education, Adrian Piccoli and Minister for Transport, Andrew Constance made the announcement last Thursday, that is a win for students and families.

“School travel assistance gets students from kindergarten to Year 12 to and from home safely and keeps cars off the road at busy peak periods,” Mr Piccoli said.

Parents with students who need to apply for a School Opal card can do so from next week, but students with a current travel pass don’t need to.

The travel program will provide more than $550 million to fund 80 million school trips for students from primary school to TAFE every year. The cards will be for free travel on school days only, between the times of 6.30am and 7pm, and eligible full-time TAFE students will be able to use the card until 9.30pm.

Modest but welcome increase to arts funding DALE DRINKWATER

slight increase to funding means Penrith Performing and Visual Arts (PPVA) will continue to entertain the region for years to come.

The PPVA has secured $1.125 million from the State Government over three years, as part of the $19 million Arts and Cultural Development Program.

Though not as large as the 40 per cent funding increase across the state, PPVA CEO, Hania Radvan, said they are delighted funding will continue from January 2016 to December 2018. “For us, it’s just a four per cent increase, but we are still very happy as it means we have certainty for the next three years,� she said.

Mrs Radvan said the money is fundamental to the PPVA, that will build on programs across the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre and the Penrith Regional Gallery. “It is absolutely vital to the 16 exhibitions we deliver every year across four exhibition suites at the gallery,� she said. “This isn’t projects funding, this supports our ongoing programs. It helps us do everything we do, it supports things like studioQ, Q Lab, the staff who

run them, and the development of new productions.�

She said funding would be split across various artforms. “I haven’t yet done the budget variations, but essentially it will go to programs on both sides of the PPVA, across theatre, music and visual arts,� she said.

Young people and people with a disability will see more programs, and the PPVA has also committed to increasing the accessibility and relevance of programs to Aboriginal people.

The PPVA is one of 160 arts and cultural organisations across NSW that will see funding to deliver innovative and high quality programs and projects.

Warning ahead of summer I would like to highlight to your readers that 993 people have drowned in a river, creek or stream in the past 13 years. This makes rivers the leading location for drowning in Australia. All types of people are drowning in rivers from young children to the elderly. What is most alarming is that almost three quarters of people who drowned in rivers, were close to their home and a majority were male. So why are so many drowning in our local rivers?

The flat, still surface of a river, gives a false sense of security. You can’t see ice cold water, snags like tree branches or strong currents but they can be lethal.

Dangerous activities such as consuming alcohol, driving through floodwaters and not wearing a lifejacket are also adding to the alarming figures. To lose a loved one so close to home when it could have been prevented is heartbreaking. People need to act responsibly around rivers and avoid any behaviour that may increase the risk of drowning.

‘Homeless hub’ reports slammed Developers say investors will ultimately decide fate of 80 apartments in Penrith CBD DALE DRINKWATER

local property developer has hit back at media reports claiming his latest private development is destined to be a ‘homeless hub’.

Reports last week suggested the residential and commercial mix on Henry and Evan Streets in Penrith would be home to 200 homeless people when charity group Christ Mission Possible (CMP) leases the 80 apartments.

Tino Carfi, Managing Director of Carfi Property Services in Kingswood, said the future of the eight-storey residential development was poorly reported.

“It’s not actually a homeless hub, I was shocked when I read about it,” he said.

“It’s a residential development and all the residential apartments have been sold to private investors individually.”

Mr Carfi said it’s up to private investors to decide whether they want to lease their units to CMP. “CMP has signed a pre-lease agreement for use of the commercial ground floor.

Their intention is that they also want to lease all of the residential apartments above to operate their housing solutions,” he said.

“I can’t speak on behalf of 80 investors as to what they may do, they may wish to lease to CMP, but they may not.”

The development was modelled on a Defence Housing concept, where an organisation rents the property from a landlord at market value, and the tenant, in this case CMP, places their clients in the house.

CMP CEO Martin Beckett said CMP has expressed interest in long term leases for the whole 80 apartments, but admits it’s not set in stone.

“There’s no guarantee, but at the moment I feel most investors are on board with this Defence Housing model. If not all investors are in on it, then that’s OK,” Mr Beckett said.

Mr Beckett said a ‘hub’ is a buzz-word, but CMP intends to place homelessness services in the commercial area on the ground level.

“We have the idea that there will be a daycare centre on site, a community kitchen, cafe, CMP office with up to 50 staff, a Centrelink and doctor,” he said.

“Council could block [this commercial use] but we are not getting that feeling.”

Construction will continue this month, with the development expected to be completed by late next year.

The team, known as Team Spaceballs, is made up of four everyday blokes from Emu Plains, Glossodia and Rouse Hill with their billy cart based on the 1987 film ‘Spaceballs’.

After thousands of entries into the event this year, Team Spaceballs say they couldn’t believe it when they got their acceptance letter.

Did you know that Penrith City Council offers a free Telephone Interpreter Service for people whose first language is not English?

One in five Penrith residents were born overseas while one in seven residents speak a language other than English at home.

“If you have a family member, friend, neighbour or know someone whose first language is other than English and needs to speak to Council then let them know about this free service,” said Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown.

The Telephone Interpreter Service acts as an intermediary translating the customer’s language of choice as they speak to Council staff. It is available by calling 131 450 and asking the operator to call Penrith Council on 4732 4777.

Library closure St Marys Library and St Marys Council office will be undergoing a refurbishment and be closed to the public from Wednesday, December 2 until Sunday, December 20 (inclusive).

It will reopen to the public and resume normal services from December 21.

This first stage of refurbishment involves the Library internal walls being repainted, the installation of new carpet, new public PC desks and new DVD shelving. This refurbishment will create a greater area of study space and will allow the installation of additional PCs for customers to use.

The work is taking place as a direct result of recommendations received from a 2012 listening post survey.

he busiest time of the year is fast approaching and Guide Dogs NSW/ ACT is asking for urgent puppy raisers for the Christmas and New Year period.

Camille Brandt, who works in Orchard Hills, picked up her Labrador puppy just two weeks ago and said training him is something she is happy to do.

“The biggest benefit of being a puppy raiser is that you know you will be helping someone in the long run who needs this kind of support,” Ms Brandt said.

“You are there to get them out of the ‘naughty puppy’ phase and teach them the basic commands and once these are learnt you also gain a certain level of personal satisfaction.”

It takes almost two years and $35,000 to breed, raise and train each Guide Dog, with raisers playing an important role.

Ms Brandt’s Guide Dog, Leo, has just started puppy pre-school, a requirement for all Guide Dogs.

“He is responding really well to the training I’ve given him and knows how to sit, drop and stay at just 10 weeks old,” she said.

Ms Brandt is a long-term carer and will have Leo for around a year.

After receiving four tenders from businesses to demolish the ramps to Allen Place car park, Council has decided to not go with any of them.

Council carried a recommendation to not accept any tenders, and the report indicated that now vehicle traffic has been removed, the risk of collapse has been greatly reduced and the ramps are currently acceptable in terms of public safety. Council will continue to monitor the site.

The NBN Co. has briefed Penrith City Council on the company’s corporate plan, technology strategies and its progress in the Penrith area. Over 22,000 premises in the area are either already connected or under construction, and the NBN Co. is looking at alternate technologies such as ‘fibre to the node’, ‘fixed wireless’ and ‘hybrid fibre coaxial’ (HFC). Emu Plains is part of the HCF trial deployment, that the NBN Co. said will benefit Penrith. Councillors questioned if the changeover will require businesses to change their phone number, and if new developments would have to be set up with the NBN Co. from the outset. The NBN Co. said they are both discussions people need to have with their retailers and developers.

There was a request for a memo to be

sent to Councillors on the likely date of the roll-out of the NBN suburb by suburb.

Council’s tourism website, Visit Penrith, has had a 500 per cent increase in traffic since its launch in September. There has also been an increase from an average 600 page views per month, to a huge 14,000 since launching. People are also spending more time on the site, with an increase from an average of 43 seconds to three minutes. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said this indicates the site is reaching people who have either never been to Penrith or never thought about visiting Penrith before, and people are more engaged with the content. “We’ve seen an increase in activity across our social media channels and more people connecting with us using #visitpenrith,” she said.

Penrith Council has started a $6.7 million upgrade of St Marys City Centre. Footpaths, trees and lighting at the northern end of the CBD including Station, Queen, Nariel and Phillip Streets are currently being replaced.

New asphalt will be laid in early December. Work has also begun at the southern end of Queen Street.

mma, James and Jack Hazzard aren’t your average kids. Why? Because at the ages of 16, 13 and 11 they have a license to thrill.

While their friends are busy kicking soccer balls or scoring goals in netball, the Hazzard siblings are busy filling their junior dragsters with exotic fuels and putting their pedals to the metal.

The South Penrith trio have been racing junior dragsters for a number of years and this weekend will compete in the Australian National Drag Racing Association’s East Coast Nationals competition at Eastern Creek’s Sydney Dragway.

16-year-old Emma Hazzard said the family were introduced to the unique motor sport through their uncle who used to race Holden Toranas.

our uncle brought home a dragster for him to race,” she recalled.

A drag race is simply a contest between two vehicles racing side by side in a straight line for a predetermined distance. In most drag racing categories, the first vehicle to the finish line wins.

Drag racing is a very popular sport in Australia and in particular the Penrith area. Along with the Hazzard family, a further 10 locals participate in the sport.

Emma, James and Jack race junior dragsters, which is a category designed for kids aged eight to 17-years-old.

An average race is over an eighth of a mile or 201 metres, and is often completed in just eight seconds.

Mum Kim said she isn’t too concerned when her kids climb into the very tiny cockpits ready to reach speeds of 130km/h.

“I probably get more anxious because I want them to perform well,” she said.

I

was watching a program on television recently concerning the rise of videos, and in particular, viral videos (those that become enormously popular by being shared unprompted on social media and the Internet in general). It focused on YouTube and gave a short history of how the founders of YouTube got started.

In short, their first attempts at launching a video platform were dismal – they posted a video and it received one view!

They tried a few other changes to their idea and after a few false starts, YouTube quickly became one of the fastest growing sites on the web.

About one year after launching, Google bought YouTube for US$1.65billion!

Imagine if the founders of YouTube, sitting in their garage with their new idea, had given up after that first attempt?

Instead, they believed in their concept and continued to tweak the way YouTube functioned.

It was not long before others saw the potential (most notably, Nike, who posted a video that was actually an

advertisement, giving YouTube its first one-million hit video). And the rest is history.

While most of us are not going to have the phenomenal success of YouTube, we should still be on the lookout for opportunities.

I think though that some of us view ‘opportunity’ as good luck or something that creates an easy path to success.

Thomas Edison said, “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work”.

Another great view of opportunity is from Winston Churchill, who said that, “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty”.

So sometimes (or perhaps often?) opportunity is what you make of a situation, rather than something that ‘happens’ to come your way.

(And by the way, if you’ve never seen one of the most watched YouTube clips ever, look up ‘Charlie bit my finger – again!’, it’s has had over half a billion views and earned Charlie’s family more than $150,000).

any businesses have pieces of a new employee induction process in place, but it’s not often understood correctly as to how to share the information, when to schedule addressing the different parts and who needs to be involved to make for an engaging process.

Design a process, not an event The orientation process is just that, a process that will unfold over time, not just in one day. While it is important to share enough information so that a new employee feels equipped and prepared to do their work, employers should avoid overwhelming a new employee.

Make a good first impression For many new employees, their first day experiences will be carried with them throughout their involvement with your business. For employers, the first day with a new employee provides the opportunity to welcome them to the team and help them feel comfortable.

Make it personal and meaningful It is important to tailor the orientation process to the individual employee’s particular needs. While there is basic

information that all employees need to access, someone with 10 years professional experience may not need the same process as a trainee who is working for the first time.

Help new employees understand and build their network New employees need to figure out who people are, what their roles are and how they interact within your business. To become a fully-functioning member of the team, employees need to know who to call to get something done, understand who reports to whom and so on.

Go beyond the HR basics to share the workplace culture and informal practices An induction process that only covers policies and procedures is only telling a small part of the story. Think of the formal and informal ‘rules’ at your workplace. Inform new employees of fun activities you do like casual Fridays and how you celebrate birthdays. Build the culture into them from the start.

Make information accessible An online resource or a file on your shared drive that is regularly updated, and always accessible, is the best practice.

The Western Weekender’s November 7, 2014 edition revealed that a local institution – Vicary’s Winery and Woolshed at Luddenham – would be forced to close due to Badgerys Creek airport construction.

Eviction notices were served to Badgerys Creek and Luddenham residents living on Commonwealth lands to make way for the new airport, which remained one of the local region’s most controversial issues.

Some residents had been leasing their homes for over 30 years from the Federal Government after their properties were acquired for the airport decades ago.

Vicary’s Winery owner Chris Niccol said it was a sad time, with the closure of the winery to be a great loss to Australian culture.

Meanwhile, it lasted only a few minutes, but a freak storm left a path of destruction that stunned local residents.

In one of the more serious incidents, the roof of a medical centre on Bringelly Road at Kingswood was torn off during the ferocious storm.

And the paper’s back page declared “Wanderers conquer all” after the Western Sydney Wanderers secured the Asian Champions League title.

MG was a polarising character Somewhere at Penrith Panthers HQ, a folder most likely with a fair bit of dust on it contains a playing contract torn into about 10 pieces.

The contract belonged to Mark Geyer. It was filed away during a drama-charged period at the club in 1992 after Geyer had torn the contract up during a fiery meeting with then-CEO Don Feltis in the car park of Penrith Stadium.

Geyer had taken the death of Ben Alexander in 1992 particularly hard, but other issues were also playing a part in what was a difficult period for the big forward – including his relationship with Phil Gould, which had deteriorated significantly.

Geyer had been injured in round 10 and despite requests from the club, refused to attend training. With the issue boiling, Feltis arranged a meeting.

“He would not agree to attend training but agreed to meet me in the car park before training at Penrith Stadium,” Feltis recalled.

Almost like a police operation, Feltis arranged for two Board members to be in the vicinity of the car park so they could confirm that the meeting took place.

Geyer also attended the meeting with back-up and although the player has never been named, it is believed to have been Greg Alexander.

“They got into my motor vehicle and Mark and I had an in-depth conversation about his relationship with Phil Gould, the team, and some other issues,” Feltis said.

“During our conversation he became quite vocal and when I produced his player’s contract, he took it from me and tore it into at least eight or 10 parts. As proof of his actions and our conversation, that torn-up contract is still on file to this day.”

It seems that time heals all wounds.

Geyer would ultimately return to Penrith in the late 1990s a much more mature player and man. He’s now a successful media personality.

T

hough technological advancement has seen an improvement in music production quality there’s really nothing like the sound you get from live music.

This is exactly what country music star Adam Harvey aimed to capture on his new album ‘Harvey’s Bar... The Backyard Sessions’, which brings to life the singalongs and good times of his home bar.

“It wasn’t a planned thing, it just came about because I had so many people that would come up to me after the shows and they’d say ‘oh man I saw that post you put up on Facebook’ or ‘I saw that picture of your bar’,” Adam said.

“I tell stories about the bar at the shows and people often say ‘God, I’d love to spend a night in that bar’.

“So I figured I might try and see if I can take a bit of that vibe and get that down on tape and take a bit of it to the listener.”

Like his bar, the album – which is due for release on Friday, November 20 – wasn’t a solo project.

“I figured if I wanted to try and capture one of those nights at the bar I needed to get those same people back in there, the regulars,” Adam said.

“I think in one track you can even hear my dog howling in the background and people laughing and carrying on and singing along.”

‘Harvey’s Bar... The Backyard Sessions’ features a host of alcohol themed tracks including ‘Alcoholday’, ‘Yeah I Like Beer’, ‘Misery and Gin’ and ‘The Nips are Getting Bigger’.

They’re songs that feel perfectly at home on a bar themed country album, but Adam found that some people were a bit unsure as to how an album like this would be received.

“I had a couple of people say ‘oh gee you’re going to stir up some controversy’.

I said ‘what do you mean?’, ‘oh well singing about drinking and everyone over having a drink at your bar, that’s not very politically correct’,” he said.

“And I thought that’s so true, the world’s gone bloody mad. Everyone does it, everyone gets together and has a drink and a good time, but it’s one of those things that I guess is no longer allowed to be talked about or sang about for fear of being politically incorrect.

“But we love it, we get all our friends over there and it’s not about getting in there and trying to get smashed, we’re a bit old for that nowadays, but it’s just about getting together with your really close friends.

“That bar’s been a really important little hub for our family and all of our friends in the neighbourhood.”

Those that are keen to get their own taste of Harvey’s Bar live can head along to the album launch at Rooty Hill RSL on Saturday, November 14.

Adam is excited about the launch but also has some fears.

“I’m nervous,” Adam said about his first time performing songs from the album.

“You record the songs and you hope they’re going to work and you hope people are going to like it but then this is judgement day.

“If we get a good reaction from the crowd, well then it calms you down a lot because you think ‘OK yeah, I’m on the right track, people are going to like the songs and like what I’m doing here’.”

Adam’s aim is to give audiences the chance to indulge in a little escapism, which will include a replica of his bar brought to life on stage.

“When they come to a show if they can just forget about all their cares and their worries for a little while and have a bit of a singalong and a laugh then we’re doing our job,” he said.

T

o get music lovers in the mood for the festive season country artist Leann Rimes has released a new holiday album ‘Today is Christmas’.

Leann recorded the album in Los Angeles and co-wrote two original songs, title track ‘Today is Christmas’ and ‘I Still Believe in Santa Claus’.

The album also includes a new version of the Kenny Loggins classic ‘Celebrate Me Home’, which features Gavin DeGraw.

Leann has joined up with DAV (Disabled American Veterans) to help honour veterans and their families over the US holiday season. Their aim is to bring more awareness to the 22 million US veterans as well as those who have recently returned home.

“While Gavin and I were recording ‘Celebrate Me Home’, we were reminded of the emotional homecoming videos we’ve seen over the years, and thought that connecting the song to veterans elevated the meaning,” Leann said.

“We thought of all the great work DAV is doing for transitioning service men and women and veterans of all generations and knew it was the perfect partnership.”

‘Today is Christmas’ is available in store and online now.

Ê ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ is set to return on Nine next year with four new judges and one new host. Replacing previous host Julia Morris is comedian and radio personality Dave Hughes.

On the judging panel next year will be international star Kelly Osbourne, the hilarious Sophie Monk, former ‘Australian Idol’ judge Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson and actor Eddie Perfect.

Ê Channel Ten has axed Aussie drama series ‘Wonderland’ after two seasons.

Ratings for the show had been well under the mark prompting Ten to make the chop. ake one part ‘Blackadder’, mix in some ‘Mean Girls’ and top with a dose of ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ and you’ve got a recipe for RB Sheridan’s ‘The School of Scandal’.

This comedy gem is set to be the next big production for local theatre group The Glenbrook Players, who are now in their 40th year of entertaining local audiences.

Set in London, the story follows the meddlesome Lady Sneerwell and her School for Scandal, a group of aristocratic idlers with too much money and way too much spare time.

With a host of interesting characters and dramatic sub plots, this hilarious show is sure to entertain audiences.

While it may seem a far cry from modern day Sydney, director Tania M C Lewis believes that good comedy never really ages.

“Despite being over 250 years old, ‘The School for Scandal’ remains relevant and funny,” she said.

“We still recognise the comedy inherent in meddling in other people’s affairs and the humour that comes from watching someone dig a hole, and keeping on digging.”

Rehearsals are in their final stages.

‘The School for Scandal’ will be on at the Glenbrook Theatre from Friday, November 13 until Saturday, November 21. Performance times are Friday evening at 8pm and Saturday at 2pm and 8pm. Tickets are $22-$25. For more information or to purchase tickets visit www.glenbrookplayers.com.au.

DVD Terminator Genisys Rated M // KATE REID

In ‘Terminator Genisys’ John Connor (Jason Clarke) is the leader of a group of humans who are attempting to fight back against Skynet.

With the aim to protect his mother Sarah (Emilia Clarke) he sends Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to try to stop her being killed by a Terminator, but when Kyle returns the past isn’t what he expected.

Kyle, Sarah and her Terminator guardian (Arnold Schwarzenegger) must fight unexpected enemies to save the world from destruction.

As far as action movies go this certainly offers audiences plenty of bang for their buck.

One of the highlights of these blockbuster effects is the scene where modern day Arnie goes into battle

with the 80s version of himself.

Unfortunately while the action sequences are well executed it isn’t enough to save the film.

The plot is needlessly convoluted and doesn’t have the intelligence or originality of James Cameron’s ‘The Terminator’ and ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’.

The cast does what they can with what they’ve been given, which isn’t much.

Jai Courtney is the standout while Emilia Clarke does her best in the role of Sarah Connor but unfortunately she doesn’t live up to Linda Hamilton’s portrayal of this tough and complex character.

Eternal Return // KATE REID Aussie singer/songwriter Sarah Blasko has just released her fifth album ‘Eternal Return’ which sees her taking on a slightly different direction than listeners are used to from the indie artist.

While Sarah is well known for her quirky brooding folk music, on this release she explores a more upbeat electronic sound.

‘Eternal Return’ includes plenty of 80s inspired synth tracks laced with Sarah’s signature raw raspy vocals.

This pop-synth sound is at its best on songs like ‘Better With You’ and ‘I’d Be Lost’.

Even on the more down tempo tracks there is still a palpable air of positivity, which isn’t surprising when Sarah herself describes this as an album that explores the early stages of love.

‘Eternal Return’ is definitely up there with some of Sarah’s best work, and it’s great to see an artist exploring new sounds while staying true to their roots.

‘Inside Out’ is set in the mind of Riley, an 11-year-old girl whose life is dominated by five emotions: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear.

Up until recently Joy has been the most popular emotion but when Riley’s family moves from the Midwest to San

Francisco everything changes. Riley tries to maintain control but with a new school, new friends and a new home she struggles to keep the other emotions from taking over.

As a huge Pixar fan I’m happy to say this is one of their best flicks yet. The concept is original and the characters, even Anger and Fear, are hugely lovable.

Though it’s set in the mind of a young girl this is a story that everybody will relate to.

We all experience that struggle between conflicting emotions and this ap-

peal to all ages has become a trademark of Pixar films.

Phyllis Smith as Sadness provides the most laughs, while the eternally disgruntled Lewis Black was born to play the role of Anger.

Along with the laughs there’s also an emotional depth to the film. It definitely tugs on the heartstrings and I’m not ashamed to admit I may have cried.

Whether you’re a kid, or just a kid at heart, this is worth checking out.

Punters have a ball on Cup day The punters were out in force on Tuesday afternoon for this year’s ‘race that stops a nation’.

Racing fans got dressed in their finest outfits and headed to Melbourne Cup celebrations around Penrith including at Penrith Paceway, Hank’s Seafood Co and Dom’s Cocktail Lounge at Panthers Penrith.

The race was taken out by Prince of Penzance and jockey Michelle Payne, who became the first female rider to win a Melbourne Cup. The horse was a 100-1 shot, meaning the real winner on the day was the bookies.

However, we hear a few lucky locals did manage to snare the winner, and of course office sweeps across the region all had one smiling face.

Red in the fridge!

W

ith Australians in recent years taking more and more to lighter and more savoury red wine styles in our warmer months, we’re also doing something that was almost unthinkable even just a few years back – we’re actually putting these reds in the fridge!

And we’re realising just how enjoyable they can be, with one maker who is openly advocating the concept of refrigerating lighter reds being the Clare Valley’s Tim Adams, who has just released a 2015 Novo (New) Sangiovese under his Mr Mick label, a wine he says is “a quality alternative to Rosé” and nicely priced at $17.

Sangiovese is the most-planted red variety in its homeland Italy, and is the backbone of that country’s famous Chianti that traditionally contains anywhere between 75 per cent and 100 per cent Sangiovese, with quite a wide range of other varieties making up the rest.

Tim Adams’ 2015 Mr Mick Novo Sangiovese is a wonderfully easy-going wine that’s all about flavours of red berries – cherries, strawberries and raspberries – mellow tannins and with a nice clean and dry finish.

And yes, do pop it in the fridge in our coming warmer months to give it a nice bit of chill… with its acidity, herbaceousness and savoury notes, it’s a natural to enjoy with – what else? – a pizza with loads of tomato, cheese and herbs, and if you’re a carnivore, plenty of pepperoni.

So yes, the time has come to forget everything you know about red wine traditions. Putting it in the fridge? Yes, it really is a thing!

Wood, died at the age of 86 in the year 2004. Despite the fact that her body was not found until 2011, the law dictates that where a person dies without a Will the question of who is entitled to their estate is to be determined as at the date of the person’s death.

As at the year 2004 (when Ms Wood died) Ms Wood had no spouse, children or parents surviving her and

only one remaining sibling.

The laws that govern what happens when someone dies without a Will dictate that her surviving sibling became the person entitled to her estate immediately upon Ms Woods’ death.

What makes this case interesting is that the said sibling died after Ms Wood’s passing in 2004 but before her body was discovered in 2011. The issue of contention amongst family members is the fact that this did not extinguish his entitlement. As he was entitled to Ms Wood’s estate at the date of his death, it follows that the beneficiary of his estate (being his wife/Ms Wood’s sister-in-law) became the indirect beneficiary of Ms Wood’s estate as well.

The decision of the Supreme Court has left many members of Ms Wood’s family who are related to her by blood outraged that her estate has passed to someone who was related to the deceased only by marriage.

While the circumstances surrounding Ms Woods’ death are disturbing, the lesson is that had she written a Will before her passing then her estate would have ended up in the hands of someone other than a sisterin-law with whom she had little contact.

However, unless you are extremely fit already, an all out set of that won’t last for very long before you feel like lying down and having a rest for a week or two. This is where intervals are good.

An interval type workout is where you can do all out sets of exercise broken up by rest so you can keep the intensity high enough.

Think of the difference in

pace if you were running the City to Surf compared to the pace you would cover 50m back to a gate if two huge Rottweilers launched around a corner at you. That 50m might only be a tiny fraction of the distance and time it takes to do the City to Surf but the actual results, training wise, in your body would be a whole lot more than the equivalent 50m in the long distance run because of the intensity it was done at. So your return on time invested is a whole lot higher.

There was a study done years ago called ‘Impact of exercise intensity on body fatness and skeletal muscle metabolism’.

In short, it showed a group of people doing interval training for 15 weeks burnt nine times the amount of fat as a group of endurance training people training for 20 weeks!

Even if the fat burning was just equal it would be a good reason to do it but nine times more is incredible.

There is a drawback though.

It’s hard to do, not everyone can handle it.

Keep it simple. For example, do as many chin-ups as you can then drop and do as many pushups as you can.

Push yourself and you will earn the results.

We think the things that we have been able to achieve will mean we are independent and strong, when in fact the opposite is true.

By trying to live independently of God we have cut ourselves off from the very source of life.

By relying on our wealth and possessions we have cut ourselves off from that which will truly sustain us and give us real life, hope, blessing and purpose.

We need not fear the truth, for as Jesus says in another part of the Bible, “The truth will set you free”.

You probably will have heard by now about a recent World Health Organisation report that has found evidence of a link between processed meats and colorectal cancer.

The report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer has placed processed meats, including ham, bacon and sausages, in the same category as cancercausing agents such as asbestos and tobacco smoke.

It all sounds pretty scary doesn’t it? So what exactly does this mean for our diets?

Well once again it all comes back to the same advice dietitians and nutritionists have been giving for years; moderation and variety.

The report recognised that while there is a link between meat consumption and cancer, the risk is small and

dependent on the amount of meat consumed.

Picking out an individual food as the problem also ignores the fact that good health has more to do with your overall diet than whether you indulge in the occasional sausage sizzle.

So how much meat should you be consuming? The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend that people limit their intake of foods high in saturated fats and sodium, including processed meats, but there is no need to cut them out of your diet altogether.

When it comes to red meat consumption try to limit your intake to three to four serves of lean red meat per week and include more variety in your diet with poultry and fish. It’s also best to stick to a serving size that equates to the size of the palm of your hand.

While it’s not necessary to quit meat altogether, swapping a meat dish for a vegetarian meal where possible is a great way to up your vegetable intake.

At the end of the day the best way to lower your risk of health issues, including cancer, is to enjoy a healthy, varied diet; exercise regularly; and remember that as with many things in life it’s all about balance.

he most recent release vehicles and motorbikes from around the world will be on exhibit at MotorWorld Sydney – a new five day motoring festival at Sydney Motorsport Park in Eastern Creek.

Last month Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres, announced MotorWorld Sydney has been tenable for three years from 2016 by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW “This fantastic new event, obtained exclusively for western Sydney, is set to attract car enthusiasts from around Australia and the world to Eastern Creek,” Mr Ayres said.

“MotorWorld Sydney will be a live and interactive exhibition that will appeal to car enthusiasts, industry buyers and families. In the first three years, the event is expected to attract almost 28,000 domestic and international visitors, with a visitor spend of more than $15 million, providing an enormous boost to the western Sydney visitor economy.”

The inaugural event will take place in November 2016 and is set to be broadcast in part on free to air television.

Destination NSW CEO Sandra Chipchase said the arrival of MotorWorld confirms NSW as Australia’s favourite state for hosting key motoring events.

The Wanderers notched up their first win of the new A-League season off the back of a strong defensive display combined with a brilliant goal by new recruit Dario Vidosic.

Speaking with the media on Tuesday, the 28-year-old Socceroos star said the one goal win was certainly well deserved.

“It was a fantastic occasion to reward our home fans and ourselves for all the hard work we have put in,” he said.

“It’s definitely a relief because I think we’ve been very deserving of the three points, we’ve played very well in the first three rounds. Defensively we are very well set up and we’re not leaking too many opportunities, and the goals will come.”

Experienced striker Mark Bridge agreed with the attacking midfielder.

“It was a very good win and has been coming the last few weeks,” he said.

“It was just that final pass or decision that had been costing us and Dario got a good goal on the weekend to get us our first win in front of our home fans.”

This Saturday afternoon the Wanderers will travel up the M1 to take on A-League surprise packets the Newcastle Jets.

The Hunter-based club have enjoyed a near perfect start to the season with three wins and one loss to their name.

“It will be tough, we know what to expect from them,” Vidosic said.

“Perth played a similar style but if we play our football, create chances and bury one or two goals as quick as possible, I think we’ll be good enough to walk away with the three points.”

Bridge believes Newcastle’s recent success comes down to their new roster and coach Scott Miller.

“They have been very good and a surprise packet for many,” he said.

“What they are doing is working. He seems like a great young coach and they have some decent players in their side. It’s going to be a tough challenge this week.”

Giants give thumbs up to family-friendly draw in 2016

Students show promise at annual Wanderers Schools Cup

WS boss David Matthews has labelled next year’s AFL Premiership Fixture as an exciting one for Giants fans.

That’s despite the club not being given a single Friday night match – one of the AFL’s key timeslots.

After enjoying their best season to date in 2015, the Giants will open their 2016 campaign at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground on March 26 when they take on the Demons.

The Giants will then make their first of three trips to their home away from home in Canberra where they’ll take on Geelong before they return to Sydney to battle the Swans in Round 3.

The Giants will play eight home games at Spotless Stadium next year with the first expected to be an absolute cracker against triple-reigning premiers Hawthorn in Round 6.

“We’re pleased to have big clubs like Hawthorn, Collingwood, the Swans, Carlton and West Coast coming to western Sydney in 2016,” Matthews said.

“Some obvious highlights next year include the home Derby against the Swans in Round 12 – which will also mark the club’s 100th game in the AFL – along with home games against heavyweights

Matthews said he was delighted to have five of GWS’ eight home games at Sydney Olympic Park scheduled in the family-friendly timeslot of 4.35pm on Saturdays.

“These twilight games are very popular with our members and fans as evidenced by the strong attendance growth in 2015,” he said.

“Overall we think it’s a solid fixture as we come off our best season yet.”

However, the Giants were snubbed for prime-time Friday night timeslots, which is a blow to sponsors and the club’s wider profile.

Open to all schools in western Sydney, the regional qualifiers of the Wanderers Schools Cup began in May and took in schools from Nepean, Bankstown, Granville, Blacktown, Southern Districts, Gladesville-Hornsby and Macarthur to decide the finalists.

The remaining teams were separated into two pools with the winners facing off against each other to decide the Wanderers Schools Cup champions for 2015.

Held at Blacktown Football Park last week, Year 7 and 8 girls from Glenmore Park High School teamed up to finish a respectable fourth in the competition.

Despite not getting the overall win, coach and teacher Diana Kupresak said she was proud of her team’s efforts throughout the tournament.

“The girls won one game, drew one game and lost two games in the four matches they played,” she said.

“The girls played excellent as a team.

They kept working hard together despite not winning every single game. They never gave up no matter who they played.”

Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said the Wanderers Schools Cup was a great concept for schools in western Sydney.

Talented locals given a boost to help with training costs

Old friend returns as Panthers build coaching staff for 2016 NATHAN TAYLOR

verything old is new again at the Panthers after the club announced last week that Steve Georgallis would return next season as coach of Penrith’s NSW Cup side.

The 47-year-old briefly coached Penrith’s NRL team in 2011 following the sacking of Matt Elliott. He was overlooked for the head coaching job in favour of Ivan Cleary.

Georgallis, a Western Suburbs Magpies legend, left to join the Wests Tigers but will now return to the Panthers, where he spent six years working in different roles on the coaching staff between 2005 and 2011.

“Steve has had a long association with the Panthers and is highly regarded by everyone at the club,” Panthers Executive General Manager, Phil Gould said.

“As I said at the time when he left us at the end of 2011, we are most appreciative of the generous service he has given the club. We are delighted he is now returning to play his part in the club’s historic 50th season.”

Georgallis replaces Garth Brennan, who has been promoted to be Anthony Griffin’s assistant with the NRL side next season.

11 young locals received a Local Sporting Champions grant at a ceremony at Westfield Penrith, that will give them a leg-up in pursuing their dreams.

13-year-old South Penrith resident Jade Sweeney, who has been diving for three years, said it has been a lot of work for her and her family.

“I train 24 hours a week – three mornings, every afternoon, and Saturdays at Homebush,” she said.

Jade’s mother said the before and after school training is expensive, but her daughter’s commitment makes it all worth it.

“You wake Jade at 5am and she’s up, she never wants to miss her training, she is just so committed,” she said.

Other young talented stars like roller skaters Ebene Montgomery, 14, and Charli Goldmann, 13, train between three to six times a week for two to four hours.

The Federal Government program aims to nurture the dreams of young locals by helping with the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms and equipment.

Lindsay MP Fiona Scott said it was impressive to see so many talented young people in the Penrith region.

enrith Panthers captain Peter Wallace has vowed he will be at the club next season despite a rumoured rift with new coach Anthony Griffin.

Talk of a fallout was sparked after Wallace was very critical of the way Griffin handled his axing during their time together in Brisbane back in 2013.

Wallace was dumped by the then Broncos coach in favour of current half Ben Hunt despite only weeks earlier being told his future was safe.

Soon after Brisbane granted Wallace a release from the final year of his contract so he could return home to Penrith.

Speaking with the Weekender on Tuesday afternoon, the 30-year-old said any issues the pair had during that time were well and truly put to bed.

“Everything is all good, that stuff happened a long time ago now and is water under the bridge,” he said.

It’s understood Griffin and Wallace held ‘peace talks’ at Penrith’s first training run on Monday to resolve their differences.

“There wasn’t anything to sort out,” Wallace affirmed.

With Wallace committed to honouring the final year of his contract next season, attention now swings to whether the former Origin half will keep his role as club captain.

Wallace said he’d love to lead the Panthers for a third straight season but said that decision was ultimately up to Griffin.

“I suppose you’d have to ask the coach that question,” Wallace said.

“I’ve felt privileged to lead this side the last couple of years, so I’d love to do that again but it’s up to Hook (Griffin) and what he decides.”

With Wallace still recovering from revolutionary knee surgery back in August, he returned to training this week albeit in a limited capacity.

“I’m in the gym all week but I start running next week on our anti-gravity treadmill, which takes a lot of load off your joints,” he said.

“I’ll then move on to the field to run straight lines before slowly working my way back to full training in January.”

Wallace said he expects to be fit and firing for Penrith’s final trial game in late February.

Rugby League Gould hopes Idris can find motivation to make a return Story continued from » p. 72 While Idris had given Panthers boss Phil Gould and new coach Anthony Griffin assurances just last week that he was prepared to give his all in 2016, it’s understood that Gould has feared for some time that the hulking centre wouldn’t see out his contract.

Last week Gould said Idris would be at the club next season, but he was working through a number of issues.

On Monday, Gould only hinted at those issues when confirming Idris had been released from his deal, believed to be worth more than $400,000 a season.

“Jamal has been wonderful for our club.

He played an integral role in the Panthers’ run towards a top four finish in 2014,” Gould said.

“He was an extremely popular player with our members and his work off the field with the community and junior league programs has been nothing short of outstanding.

“Injury and personal issues restricted his playing time last season and I totally understand the reasons behind his request for this release.

“In top form, Jamal is a State of Origin quality player. I hope that he can find a way to rekindle his motivation for the

game and return at some stage in the future.”

In recent times Idris has been linked with a possible move to the Melbourne Storm but it now appears likely that he’ll sit out the 2016 NRL season.

In May 2014, Idris was briefly stood down by the Panthers due to personal issues, understood to be alcohol related.

He returned to good form but the drama that has followed him for most of his NRL career failed to go away.

In an exclusive interview with the Weekender earlier this year, Idris spoke of his personal battle with being a high profile rugby league player.

“I stick out like a sore thumb. My moods, that are roller-coasters, get noticed so easily,” he said.

Idris’ departure does free up some much-needed money in Penrith’s salary cap but it’s unknown if the club will look for an immediate replacement or focus on recruitment for 2017.

The Panthers could potentially line-up with Dean Whare and Waqa Blake in the centres next year, but struggle with depth having lost the versatile Lewis Brown.

However, with Robert and George Jennings also on the books, it’s more likely Penrith will focus on strengthening their forward pack for 2016 and 2017.

Around the grounds CRICKET: The Penrith Cricket Club have pulled off another thrilling win, this time over Mosman in Round 4 of the Sydney Grade Cricket competition. After Mosman declared at 9/325 on Day 1, Penrith’s first grade side hit the crease to begin Day 2. On the back of some excellent batting performances by Englishman Tom Kohler-Cadmore (126) and Josh Lalor (61), Penrith managed to get home scoring 7/327. Penrith, who now sit in eighth position, will battle the fifth-placed Bankstown in a two-day match starting this Saturday at Howell Oval.

BASEBALL: The Penrith Panthers first grade side have been hammered

by Macarthur 5-0 in Round 7 of the NSW State Baseball League. The Panthers will look to regroup this weekend when they take on Central Coast.

GRIDIRON: It may have taken them two months to do it but the Nepean Ducks have finally won their first game of the season, defeating the Newcastle Cobras 27-20 in Round 8 of the Gridiron NSW competition.

The Ducks will now look to go back to back when they meet North Western this Saturday afternoon.

ith one phone call last Sunday, the rugby league career of Jamal Idris was terminated.

Via his manager, Idris informed the Penrith Panthers that he would be a noshow at the first day of pre-season training the following morning.

Panthers boss Phil Gould agreed to release the 25-year-old from the final year of his lucrative contract, potentially ending the career of a prodigious rugby league talent whose personal demons constantly haunted him.

“I love the game of rugby league but just at the moment I need to take some time away,” Idris said.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Panthers but I did not want to continue playing if I couldn’t guarantee giving them 100 per cent.”

Idris, a former representative player, joined Penrith in 2014 after an unhappy stint at the Gold Coast Titans.

He suffered a serious knee injury in 2015 that kept him out for most of the season.
