ccessibility will be a key focus for Penrith’s new Mayor and Deputy Mayor, who both have children with a disability.

Mayor John Thain’s son, Henry, is 17-years-old and was born with Down syndrome, and Deputy Mayor Tricia Hitchen’s 18-year-old son, Liam, suffers from severe cerebral palsy and epilepsy.

Both Councillors have vowed to keep each other in the loop and be briefed on situations together, to ensure consistency if one has to suddenly take time away from their job.

“We both have kids with disabilities, so it’s important Cr Hitchen is across what I’m across so if I have to step out it can be seamless,” Cr Thain told the Weekender.

Liam is in a wheelchair, so Cr Hitchen has learned first hand how important it is to have an accessible city, and has worked hard to provide adult change rooms in the Penrith CBD. The adult change rooms will soon be built in a vacant shop front in the arcade beside the Triangle Park at the western end of High Street, and will have a hoist and adult change tables. Cr Hitchen said building another adult change room in the St Marys CBD will be her next focus.

“When you go out for the day with the

family you just take your kids to the toilet, but for us, we have to go home. There is no hoist, and now he is too heavy,” she said.

“For people that are coming to Penrith now we are the ‘adventure capital’, it’s a huge problem. They look for accessible toilets, but if there’s nowhere to go to get changed they won’t come.”

Cr Hitchen also said she aims to work with businesses in the east of High Street to encourage them to provide ramps instead of steps into their shop fronts.

Cr Thain said the community needs more than just Council’s support to be an accessible city.

“What we really need is bigger organisations like shopping centres to get on board.

It’s hard to change your kid in a change room when they’re all for babies,” he said.

Cr Thain’s son Henry attends respite with Liam at Barnardos, which Cr Thain said is great for them during school holidays and some weekends.

“However, Henry is finishing school next year so it’s a wonder about what they do after that,” he said.

“There are not as many outlets when they finish school, and there’s only so much the NDIS can provide.”

Cr Thain said while Barnardos respite has been great for Henry, who is non-verbal, he hopes there will be further opportunities after school for Henry to find work and recreation in the local area.

ronulla and the Western Bulldogs proved last weekend that dreams do indeed come true, especially on the sporting field.

Two clubs with trophy cabinets that resembled dust collection points, both facing off against the Minor Premiers in their respective codes and both coming away with wins for the history books.

In the NRL, the Sharks ended 49 years of heartbreak with a Grand Final win in their 50th year, and you couldn’t help but feel good for their long-suffering fans and former players.

Despite the turbulence of the last 12 months, rugby league finished the year in impressive fashion with an average metro TV audience for the Grand Final of 2.5 million and a sellout crowd at ANZ Stadium of 83,625.

The AFL delivered even better results, with an average metro TV audience of 3.1 million and a crowd at the MCG just a tick under 100,000.

Both codes continue to dominate the sporting landscape in Australia and when it comes to western Sydney, both are extremely well placed.

The emergence of the Penrith Panthers as a force to be reckoned with this year will give rugby league a much-needed boost in the west, and much of it has been achieved by the club itself with little help from those at NRL HQ. The Panthers are placed to threaten for a premiership more than once in the next few years, with the club setting itself up for a successful era on the back of a squad that could well be the best the Panthers have ever assembled for next season.

poorer cousin of the NRL and AFL as far as mainstream popularity is concerned but there is no doubt that football has made impressive strides across the country in recent years.

Football was already a dominant force at grassroots level, while the English Premier League and international soccer garners huge interest, but the local league has always struggled for attention.

That’s partly why the A-League has implemented a simplistic ‘you’ve gotta have a team’ message this year, encouraging wider football fans to get behind their local league.

Unfortunately, not everyone is coming to the party to promote the new season – here at the Weekender we were extremely disappointed that Wanderers coach Tony Popovic couldn’t make himself available for an interview despite three weeks of trying.

The A-League desperately needs all of its participants to come to the party if it is truly going to emerge as the dominant sport over the summer.

While the Derby will garner plenty of attention this weekend, another huge sporting event will take centre stage with the Bathurst 1000 again being run and won.

With Channel 10 airing its Peter Brock film this weekend, there will be an added feeling to the event this year.

But the sport that really threatens to explode this summer is the Big Bash League.

The T20 competition has been slowly working its way into our summer traditions since 2011 and I have a feeling it’ll really reach new heights when the season begins in mid-December.

Police arrested the man and woman and seized drug paraphernalia and synthetic cannabis.

The duo were both taken to Penrith Police Station where they were charged with ‘child neglect’ and ‘possess prohibited drug’.

Both were granted bail and are due to appear at Penrith Local Court on Monday, October 31. FACS told the Weekender they were unable to comment further as it’s a police matter.

15-month-old girl has been taken into the care of authorities after she was found in a car in Penrith last week, along with an alleged amount of drug paraphernalia and two unconscious adults.

The toddler is being cared for by the Family and Community Services (FACS) department, which said it was “deeply troubled” by the incident.

Police found a 24-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman, believed to be the girl’s mother, unconscious in a vehicle in

a car park on Tench Reserve, Penrith at about 11.45pm last Wednesday.

“Police also saw the 15-month-old girl in the back seat and called NSW Ambulance Paramedics to the scene,” a police spokesperson said.

“She was taken to Nepean Hospital where she was checked as a precaution.”

A spokesperson for FACS told the Weekender the situation was saddening.

“FACS staff were deeply troubled to hear of the incident involving the 15-monthold girl,” the spokesperson said.

“The key priority for FACS is to always act in the interest of the safety and wellbeing of children.

Woman jailed after conspiring to have sex with nine-year-old ALENA HIGGINS

local woman who conspired to have sex with a nine-year-old girl has been sentenced to four-and-ahalf years jail.

Anne Eileen Zarb sat in the dock with her head bowed and showed little emotion as Judge Mark Buscombe handed down his decision at Penrith District Court last week.

The 45-year-old has been on remand since November 5, 2015 when she and her former lover, who can’t be named for legal reasons, were apprehended at McDonald’s Penrith by undercover sex crimes detectives who had been monitoring them since June.

The court heard the mother-of-four, who was working part-time as a kitchen hand at Nepean and Springwood Hospitals, began an affair with the Emu Plains man after meeting him in late 2013.

They would catch up and discuss their sexual desires, with the co-offender later disclosing his penchant for prepubescent children.

During this time detectives commenced a covert investigation, legally intercepting mobile phone exchanges between the two, which included photos of Zarb engaging in bestiality with a dog.

the co-accused spoke about having Zarb present, saying she was “extremely broad minded”.

“F**k we are wicked bad,” he said in a text to Zarb after receiving confirmation from the undercover officer that their plans to meet with the girl at a Penrith hotel on November 5 would definitely go ahead.

Judge Buscombe said he found it “impossible to accept” Zarb’s statement that even on the day of the offence she didn’t believe the co-accused was going to go through with it.

“I’m satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that she would have engaged with sexual intercourse or helped the co-offender to do so,” Judge Buscombe said.

After she was collared, Zarb made “full and frank admissions” and a search of her car found a bag containing a large number of sex toys, which she told officers belonged to her.

Judge Buscombe said he would not increase Zarb’s sentence to take in the bestiality charge, noting that while it is “morally repugnant”, it did not involve torture or cruelty.

Zarb’s lawyer had argued that his client was “vulnerable” at the time of the offending and was seeking her lover’s “approval and acceptance”.

She is eligible for release on parole on January 2, 2019.

Car calls on Skinner to resign from health post DALE DRINKWATER

t’s up to patients to stop putting pressure on Nepean Hospital, and just wait until day time to be treated.

That’s Labor’s take on a message from NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner, who said on ABC Radio last Thursday that doctors do not work well at night.

“There is much research that suggests that if you can wait until daylight hours it’s a much better outcome for patients, no matter what surgery,” Ms Skinner said.

Ms Skinner sparked intense backlash from the Opposition, who said she needs to be removed over the “insensitive and reckless comments”.

Shadow Health Minister Walt Secord led the charge, and said patients don’t have the luxury of waiting until business hours to have a stroke.

“Health Minister Jillian Skinner should know that in life threatening situations every minute and every hour counts. With stroke patients, it is important to act fast,” he said.

State Member for Londonderry, Prue Car joined the crusade, adding Ms Skinner is “out of touch” and should “quite frankly resign”.

as Minister must come to an end to restore confidence in our health system,” she said.

“Her most recent comments are insensitive to patients and their families, many of whom wait up to four hours for treatment at Nepean Hospital. Patients deserve the best quality health care when they get sick, no matter what time of the day it is.”

But Ms Skinner ensured patients will receive that level of care at Nepean, and claimed Labor is being misleading.

“Patients who present to Nepean Hospital will receive excellent clinical care, day or night. It is a pity Labor chooses to conceal this fact with scaremongering,” she told the Weekender.

She said stroke patients can then be transferred to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital for overnight neuro-intervention treatment if needed.

“Other hospitals provide limited overnight services and are networked so if a patient needs urgent attention at night they can be transferred – just as patients are if they need trauma care or highly specialised services such as treatment for burns or spinal injuries,” she said.

Ms Skinner said patients have every reason to be confident of the great care available should they suffer a stroke.

Man blames gambling and drug habits for break-ins

A man who broke into properties at Jordan Springs and Castlereagh to help feed his gambling and drug habits has been sentenced to a 12-month intensive correction order.

Penrith Local Court heard Michael Adrian Siddons’ life began spiralling out of control when he injured his shoulder in January 2014 and was unable to work.

After his insurer refused to pay him out, citing a pre-existing condition, the fatherof-two was eventually forced to sell his home.

His lawyer argued his client was a “productive member of the community” up until that time, who worked full-time and paid his mortgage.

In his submission, he said Mr Siddons was “labouring under” a significant addiction to gambling as well as having a $150-a-day ‘ice’ habit, which saw him burn through $130,000 in five months, at the time of the crimes.

The court heard Mr Siddons, who hid the massive loss from his wife, had already spent 61 days in custody having been bail refused earlier this year.

The court was told the defendant was stopped in his Ford Focus at Kingswood on January 12 and a subsequent search uncovered stolen items of machinery, including a hedge trimmer, blower and drills.

Magistrate Stephen Corry said all the matters of dishonestly “clearly arose” out of his addictions, before granting the ICO – an order of imprisonment served in the community.

“Your record seems to indicate you can live a law-abiding life,” Magistrate Corry said.

Man back in jail after assaulting fellow inmate

Freedom has been short-lived for Ricky James Masters who was sent back to the slammer last week after bashing a fellow inmate.

The 34-year-old faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday where he was sentenced to 14 months for ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’.

The court heard the father-of-seven, who was only released from jail on other matters in April this year, “set upon” the victim with an accomplice in what Magistrate Stephen Corry labelled a “sustained assault”.

He said the prisoner was extremely vulnerable at the time of the attack.

“There was no supervision where the assault took place – no one for the victim to seek assistance from,” Magistrate Corry said.

He said while it was unclear who was “wielding the knife and who was punching”, he was satisfied no alternative but full-time custody would do.

Magistrate Corry said while Mr Masters did not have a long history of violence, his ongoing drug use, which he received five breach reports for while on parole, was a concern.

“You were affected by drugs then,” an incredulous Magistrate Corry said after recalling Police evidence noted the defendant appeared affected shortly after the attack.

With his mother and girlfriend watching on, he was escorted downstairs to the cells.

He is eligible for release on parole on May 28, 2017.

Man busted drink driving but earns praise from magistrate

A Springwood man caught drink driving has been ordered off the road for nine months.

Andrew Patrick Stoner fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with high-range drink driving.

The court heard the builder’s labourer had been at a local hotel and was half way home when he was detected travelling without his headlights on.

Magistrate Stephen Corry noted the defendant’s “drinking is a worry”, but the

fact he had some insight into his problem was promising.

“When you drive a motor vehicle with that much alcohol in your system you’re a risk to people, albeit the short distance,” Magistrate Corry said.

“At least you’re honest ... about the fact you need some help.”

He was convicted, fined $800, and ordered to fit an interlock device to his car for 48 months at the completion of his disqualification.

He was also handed a 12-month good behaviour bond with the condition he accept Community Corrections supervision.

Firearms stolen after man forgets to replace lock

A man who allowed firearms to get into the hands of criminals has been slammed for his reckless behaviour.

James Geoffrey Willis was told failing to properly secure his late father’s weapons meant the community now faced “significant risks”, with only one retrieved.

Penrith Local Court heard the defendant had removed the lock from the gun safe with the intention of replacing it as soon as possible but had forgot. Sometime later, thieves broke into the house, stealing the unsecured firearms.

Magistrate Stephen Corry rejected the defendant’s request to deal with the matter without proceeding to conviction.

“This is not a matter that I wouldn’t record a conviction,” he said.

“There is a significant element of general deterrence.”

He was convicted and fined $1,000.

Club tussle ends in hefty fine for party-goer

A male involved in a club “fracas” has been slapped with a hefty fine.

Geoffrey George Knight, 22, fronted Penrith Local Court last Thursday charged with assaulting another partygoer.

The court heard the tussle took place on

the same night as Mr Knight had broken up with his partner.

Magistrate Stephen Corry noted he was otherwise of good character, but said he should have let security handle the matter.

“I accept you weren’t the instigator, but certainly you became a willing participant,” he said.

He was convicted and fined $1,000.

South Penrith local failed to comply with bail conditions

A South Penrith man has been detained after allegedly failing to comply with his bail conditions.

John James Quinn faced Penrith Local Court last Thursday after allegedly failing to notify police of his new address.

Despite Mr Quinn being scheduled for a hernia operation, Magistrate Stephen Corry determined the show cause test had not been overcome and denied the defendant further bail.

Court blasts time waster

Nathen Colman Mcnab was met with a scathing rebuke from Judge Stephen Hanley when he appeared before Penrith District Court last week to appeal the severity of his sentence for drug possession.

Judge Hanley demanded to know why he shouldn’t revoke his good behaviour bond and send him to jail given his “pathetic excuses”.

“All you’ve done is waste everyone’s time,” he boomed.

“You’ve just treated the system as an absolute joke.”

Judge Hanley said Community Corrections had tried numerous times to engage with him to offer drug and alcohol rehabilitation and to make sure he complied with his community service obligations.

He said the claim he didn’t want to fulfil his unpaid work because he was scared he would be targeted there was “not a very plausible explanation”.

His bond was revoked and a fresh one, without supervision, was imposed.

Wallacia: Men arrested after drug lab found under house

Three men were arrested and charged after police located a large-scale drug laboratory and two firearms underneath a house in Wallacia last week.

Strike Force Papala was established in June 2016 by officers attached to Penrith’s Regional Enforcement Squad (RES) to investigate drug manufacture.

At about 5am on Tuesday, September 27, investigators executed a search warrant at a home on Bents Basin Road, Wallacia, with the assistance of officers from St Marys Local Area Command, PORS and the Chemical Operations and Evidence Recovery Unit.

During the search police located a large-scale drug laboratory as well as two firearms underneath the premises.

The three occupants of the house were arrested and taken to Penrith Police Station. The men, aged 31, 52 and 56 have been charged with ‘large commercial scale manufacture’.

They were refused bail and are due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, October 25.

St Marys: String of charges for teenage driver

A man was charged with a string of offences after he was caught by police with two different number plates on his vehicle.

At about 5.25pm on Monday, October 3, police were patrolling the St Marys area when they noticed a vehicle pass them with two different number plates.

Police stopped the driver on Carrington Street, St Marys, and had a conversation with the 19-year-old St Clair driver.

Checks were made on the man and on the car. It was revealed that the 19-yearold had never held a driver’s licence and that neither of the plates belonged to that vehicle.

He was charged with ‘driver never licenced’, ‘use unregistered registrable Class A motor vehicle on road’, ‘use un-

insured motor vehicle’ and two counts of ‘Class A vehicle displaying unauthorised number plate’.

He is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on Tuesday, November 15.

Penrith: Teenager robbed of scooter at knife-point

A teenage boy was threatened with a 20cm-long knife late last week, leaving him without a scooter.

Just after midnight on Friday, September 30, the victim and his friend were travelling down Coreen Avenue, Penrith.

The victim, a 15-year-old boy, was riding his scooter while his friend was riding a push bike.

The pair were then approached by a small black car that was travelling towards them.

A man allegedly got out of the back of the car and walked towards the duo.

“The man then allegedly demanded the scooter and threatened the boy if he didn’t hand it over... with a 20cm-long knife,” a police spokesperson said.

The victim handed over the scooter.

Penrith: Police investigate after woman robbed of necklace

A woman has had her expensive necklace stolen after a man allegedly ripped it from her chest in a scary attack outside Penrith Station this week.

At about 2pm on Monday, October 3, a 55-year-old woman was waiting at a bus stop outside Penrith Station when a man allegedly began asking people for money.

“The alleged offender then grabbed the victim’s necklace with great force that it broke the chain and also pulled the woman to the ground causing her to sustain an injury,” a police spokesperson told the Weekender.

Two male witnesses got up and chased the offender.

The offender allegedly produced a small knife which caused the two witnesses to retreat.

Investigations are continuing.

egotiations are underway to ensure no net loss of commuter parking surrounding Penrith Station during the construction of a second 350 space multi-storey car park.

State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres announced the build will be completed

by AW Edwards, but asked the community to be patient when it comes to any car park closures.

“Unfortunately, as part of the construction process, the capacity of the existing car park will be temporarily reduced,” he said.

“We realise that this will be a short term inconvenience for customers, however, we will work with the contractor and local stakeholders to investigate the possibility of additional parking as close to the station as possible.”

Mr Ayres’ office did not disclose how many spaces will be lost at the site at North Penrith’s Lord Sheffield Circuit, or how many spaces could be temporarily gained during construction and where.

However, he did say work will start on a detailed design immediately so construction can commence as soon as possible.

“It will provide around 350 additional

spaces for local commuters, as well as a new lift, stairs, lighting and upgraded CCTV surveillance,” Mr Ayres said.

“We know that the lack of parking is a major concern for customers and that is why we are getting on with the job and delivering more commuter spaces to customers across the public transport network.”

Penrith’s new Mayor, John Thain, indicated parking was going to one of his key advocacy areas during his term, and said it’s imperative parking gets sorted.

“It’s short term pain for a long term gain,” he told the Weekender.

A Penrith Council spokesperson added that Council has pushed for the State Government to provide replacement parking, but also refrained from identifying how many spaces and where.

“Any loss of spaces while the building works are occurring will be a problem for local commuters,” the spokesperson said.

“We have been lobbying for more spaces to be provided and we are pleased that additional commuter car parking is to be provided at Penrith railway station.”

The new Penrith commuter car park is part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program to deliver modern, safe and accessible transport infrastructure.

Traffic Switch on Kent Road from Wednesday 12 October As part of the $70m upgrade of Gipps Street and Kent Road (the Werrington Arterial Road), Roads and Maritime Services will be changing the layout of an existing section of Kent Road, north of the M4 overpass.

From Wednesday 12 October, traffic on Kent Road between the M4 and Caddens Road will be moved onto the newly constructed southbound carriageway.

This will allow work to commence on the remainder of the new northbound carriageway from Caddens Road to south of the M4 overpass.

Time has come for marriage equality Newly elected Councillor says plebiscite is a waste of money as gay marriage debate rolls on DALE DRINKWATER

iscussions around marriage equality are more relevant than ever to Penrith Council, now it has its first openly gay Councillor.

Young Labor Councillor Aaron Duke has wasted no time in expressing his concerns with the Federal Government’s proposal for a public vote on marriage equality.

He has joined forces with fellow Labor Party member and Member for Lindsay, Emma Husar, who together believe a plebiscite would be divisive, costly and unnecessary.

“This plebiscite is a huge cost for an issue that a majority of people already agree on,” Cr Duke said.

“People are sick and tired of this debate.

It’s time to legislate for marriage equality and move on.”

Cr Duke is disappointed Australia has fallen behind other parts of the world on its legalisation.

“Australia is one of the only western countries on Earth that does not allow marriage equality,” he said.

“New Zealand, the UK and even the USA have moved on this issue but Australia lags behind.”

She said there are strong signs of support.

“The overwhelming majority of my constituents who have taken the time to discuss this matter with me have been

fully supportive of marriage equality,” she said.

“This plebiscite will cost at least $200 million – money that I would much rather see spent on Nepean Hospital.”

The Government’s estimated cost of the public vote is around $160 million, and Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Marise Payne, said it will allow every Australian voter the chance to express their views.

“This will allow Parliament to legislate in a way that directly reflects community attitudes and gives Australians a greater sense of ownership of the outcome,” she said.

“There is a wide range of opinions on this issue across the Australian community, the Turnbull Government is delivering its election commitment to give the community a say on whether same-sex marriage should be legalised.”

Both sides of politics met last Monday to seek common ground, but AttorneyGeneral George Brandis said Labor weren’t willing to compromise.

“On every occasion when I asked the Labor Party to state what their position was they refused to do so,” he said.

“If compromise was needed the Government was willing to compromise.”

he State’s Attorney-General, Gabrielle Upton, has cemented the importance of Penrith’s Legal Aid within the local community through a visit to the centre last week.

Ms Upton was hosted by Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres last Thursday, to showcase the local centre that has been providing legal services to the community in all areas of the law.

Mr Ayres said Legal Aid’s 34 staff members have tirelessly been working behind the scenes helping people from all walks of life, from Penrith to the Blue Mountains, to Mount Druitt, and parts of Hawkesbury and Wollondilly.

“Legal Aid do so much more than many people realise,” Mr Ayres said.

“They assist in most areas of criminal, family and civil law, family dispute resolution, representation in the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal and a number of specialist services.

“They work with local organisations and regularly attend community and neighbourhood centres, court houses or libraries around the state to provide free advice and assistance and community

Council considering function centre Weddings by the river likely as Development Application is lodged for overhaul of iconic location DALE DRINKWATER

eddings on the banks of the iconic Nepean River could soon be a reality, with a brand new riverfront function centre proposed for Emu Hall.

Emu Hall was built in 1852 by a vibrant local character, Tobias Ryan, a jack-of-alltrades who ended up representing Nepean in the Legislative Assembly.

The Emu Plains location is now owned by local Paul McDonald, who bought the site in February 2015 and became its fourth owner in its 164 year history.

Its potential was too endless to ignore for Mr McDonald, who immediately saw it as a place where people can come together and celebrate special events.

“The location is pretty obvious for something great on the river,” he said.

“Penrith Council have indicated they wanted to do something with River Road and Regatta Park, and the Green Bridge is going right next to us at Punt Road, so there is a lot of opportunity for people to show interest in this part of the world.”

Mr McDonald has spent countless hours working with planners and architects, to balance the build of a new centre to hold

The Development Application for the refurbishment of Emu Hall was lodged to Council on September 23 by Stimson and Baker Planning, and is under assessment.

It proposes a commercial kitchen to cater for both a newly built riverfront function

hall, plus the existing heritage building that will be available to be booked as a restaurant for private functions.

Warwick Stimson said the objective is to use the existing heritage item’s characteristics and setting to produce a high quality function venue on the Nepean River.

“The restaurant will be a fantastic addi-

tion to emerging uses along the river, and the function centre will be a welcome option for venues in Penrith, particularly overlooking the river,” he said.

Mr Stimson said the proposal is consistent with the Regatta Park Plan of Management and land uses identified in Council’s ‘Our River Master Plan’.

Coming together to fight cancer Community events aim to raise awareness and funds in the battle against women’s cancers JADE ALIPRANDI

everal ‘Girls’ Night In’ events will be held around Penrith throughout October and November to help raise funds to battle women’s cancers through the Cancer Council, with locals given the chance to host their own event.

Imaginenations Church in Penrith will hold their inspirational Girls’ Night In on Friday, October 14 to help beat breast and gynaecological cancers.

With the theme ‘Starry, Starry Night’ the event will feature a show with four performers including singer and former ‘The Voice’ contestant Maybelle Galuvao, ‘Australia’s Next Top Model’ contestant Brooke Puletua, 2005 ‘New Zealand Idol’ winner Rosie Vai and hip hop World Dance winner 2010 Danii Moeda Mariner.

As well as showing off their skills on stage, the women will be part of a panel talking about their experiences in following their dreams and dealing with setbacks.

Event organiser Sonya De Martin said that the women of Imaginenations Church wanted to hold annual Girls’ Night In events for the past six years as a way to give back to their community.

“For us, we just wanted to do something that was a community event; something that was close to people’s hearts, that touches a lot of people’s lives in a lot of ways and to be able to just draw people together,” she said.

“We just went, ‘let’s do a massive Girls’ Night In and see what it looks like’ and it’s rolled over to something fantastic.”

Every day in Australia, around 50 women are diagnosed with breast or a gynaecological cancer.

Dinner will be provided, with the help of Outback Steakhouse Penrith, and the church is expecting around 450 tickets to be sold with the aim to raise at least $15,000 for the Cancer Council.

Cancer Council is the only charity in Australia that funds research into breast and gynaecological cancers while providing support for anyone affected by women’s cancers.

Fortnightly collection is just rubbish DALE DRINKWATER

lenmore Park resident Suzi Tracey is fed up with overflowing bins and littered streets, and is demanding Penrith Council increase the frequency of garbage collection from fortnightly to weekly.

Ms Tracey began a change.org petition that received 3,500 signatures in just six days, and with summer creeping up fast, she believes there’s no time like the present to lobby Council.

“Our bins attract flies, maggots and birds who then rummage through the overflowing bins and drag rubbish onto the streets,” she said.

“This topic has been discussed online and also within our communities for some years now, and with the bin collection contract up for renewal in 2017, the time for us to band together for change is now.”

Ms Tracey’s red lid bins are collected on a Monday morning once every two weeks, and by then she said the 120 litre bin is overflowing.

“For families like mine who have children in nappies that are left sitting in a bin for two weeks before collection – along with other female sanitary items – it’s extremely unhygienic,” she said.

Penrith Council provides waste services to around 70,000 households, and have been collecting red lid bins fortnightly since the introduction of the food and garden organics weekly bin collection in 2009.

“For the majority of households, when waste is sorted into recycling (yellow lid

bin) and organic waste (green lid bin) there is hardly anything left that needs to go into the red lid bin. Hence, fortnightly collection of the red lid bin,” a spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that using both the green and red lid bins stopped 32,800 tonnes of organic waste going to landfill, that would have cost Council $2.7 million in tipping charges.

“However, we recognise that some households may require a weekly service of the red bin. The extra fee is cost recovery only for the service,” he said.

The spokesperson said the whole waste collection system is cost recovery only, and its charge is separate to Council rates.

I live in South Penrith and could hear it here but at least it finished at 10pm. Some weeks ago we had ‘boom boom’ music in the South Penrith area louder than we could hear at the festival. At 2am I rang the police only to be told “oh yes we have had quite a few complaints from your area but we are busy at the moment, we’ll get around to it when we can”. It was still booming when I finally got to sleep at 4am.

New wheels will help Bobby get around town JADE ALIPRANDI

he Penrith toddler who has captured the hearts of the local community finally has a new set of wheels.

The Webber family, who currently reside in Glenmore Park, have finally been able to purchase their new car that will soon be converted to carry two-and-a-half-yearold Bobby’s wheelchair.

Thanks to the enormous fundraising effort from the community over the past 12 months, Bobby’s mum Elise said the process of getting the car was fairly stress free.

“After all the fundraisers that have been held in Bobby’s honour and the donations made to the GoFundMe account, it felt amazing to finally get our car,” Mrs Webber told the Weekender.

“Bobby really loves it, especially now that it has his name on the number plates.”

The healthy baby boy was allegedly beaten by his non-biological uncle in 2014 at seven-months-old, leaving Bobby blind and a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy and epilepsy.

The tragic incident and his ongoing battle has touched the hearts of the wider Penrith community.

Bobby have given the family more hope with the results displaying some vision in his left eye, and the possibility of dropping some of his seizure medication.

“We have never had good results when it comes to his vision tests, so that last result blew us away and we’re so happy,” Mrs Webber said.

Not only is Bobby fighting back more and more every day, but just a few weeks ago popular Gold Coast fitness guru Ashy Bines put a call out to her large number of followers on Snapchat to dig deep and donate to the family.

Bobby’s GoFundMe account was sitting on roughly $25,000 but since the call out, the account has soared to a massive $45,000.

“I had no idea until a friend called me and said you’ve just been on Ashy Bines’ Snapchat,” Mrs Webber said.

“It was so overwhelming, I just couldn’t believe it happened and I just want to thank everyone who donated – without your support and generosity we wouldn’t be able to do half the stuff we do for Bobby.”

The car is vitally important as it’ll help Bobby get around the local area.

ver 400 lives will be saved when blood transfusions are needed thanks to the efforts of police officers from Nepean, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury Local Area Commands.

St Marys police officers have finished in second place in this year’s Emergency Services Blood Donation Four Command Challenge, with 45 donations made.

Station Commander at St Marys Local Area Command (LAC), Superintendent Greg Peters, created the Four Command Challenge two years ago.

It includes officers from the Blue Mountains LAC, Penrith LAC, St Marys LAC and Hawkesbury LAC, and this year, the Dog Unit.

Together, the group made over 135 blood donations in three months.

Superintendent Peters told the Weekender he was proud of everyone involved in the challenge.

“It’s such an awesome effort,” he said.

“I don’t just look at the 45 officers who donated from our station, I look at it as a

whole and see that over 400 lives will be saved thanks to these donations which is the most important part.”

Superintendent Peters said he believes officers wanted to donate more this year after Senior Constable Luke Warburton from Blue Mountains LAC was shot earlier this year at Nepean Hospital, sustaining heavy blood loss.

“Due to Senior Constable Luke Warburton’s incident, I think it definitely encouraged more officers to donate and give a little more,” he said.

“The amount of blood he needed was enormous so it definitely led to more donations this year.”

The challenge finished on Wednesday, August 31, after running throughout winter.

“I’m so proud of my guys and the fantastic effort they gave – it’s great when you can save one life but with our 45 donations over 130 lives will be saved which is fantastic,” he said.

The Dog Unit won the challenge overall.

s all parents of school-aged children are aware, it is school holiday time – and the countdown back to school is likely to be on by now! These holidays I decided my 11-year-old was old enough to earn some pocket money doing some work in my business. It was a great experience for him (aside from the monetary reward). He was able to use computer skills he has learnt at school, he could see a tangible contribution to my business and he felt like a ‘big boy’ with the responsibilities he was given.

He also had the opportunity to learn from his mistakes: he missed a crucial step at one stage and had to re-do some work. He learnt the hard way how it feels to lose productivity, but he also didn’t make that same mistake again.

On my business Facebook page I asked whether others have done the same with their children and how successful it has been. One person responded that it gives her child a sense of commitment and feeling needed, which makes her feel good about doing it. She did also acknowledge that mistakes sometimes

occur, so it can be more about her child’s positive experience than it is useful for her business!

Another Facebook respondent has her child help out a couple of hours each week after school (which pays for her phone each month). She sees it as a great learning experience for children, and gives them the opportunity to watch their parents run a small business, which may in turn give them confidence to take initiative in their own work.

Many small business owners want to pass on the invaluable skills and experience they know can be learnt by working for yourself. Introducing your children to the variety of tasks that small business owners undertake can be an invaluable way of instilling a strong work ethic or fostering a budding entrepreneur.

Completing tasks in your business can be linked to pocket money – although I believe it is imperative children realise that everyone in a family also has jobs and responsibilities that they don’t get paid for.

hanging your business structure from sole trader or partnership to a company often takes getting used to. This is because the rules for companies are a lot more precise than for sole traders or partnerships. In addition there are changes to accounting procedures as well as implications that directors of companies need to know.

Firstly, sole traders and partnerships are not required to have a business bank account, although it certainly helps with recording transactions. Companies, however, are legally required to have a separate bank account. Accounting for companies is also a lot more costly and complex. Companies are required to have their accounts prepared according to the Australian Accounting standards.

Furthermore the accounts need to be audited on an annual basis. Finally, the annual accounts need to be lodged for review with the Australian Investments and Security Commission.

One advantage of companies is the limited liability that is granted to them.

If the business goes bankrupt, then only the assets of the business are at risk, and

shareholders will only lose the value of the shares they hold. However, they are last on the list when it comes to recovering any money. In addition if the shareholder is a director of the business, they are legally obliged to oversee the operations of the business and ensure that it is not trading whilst insolvent, and that all obligations to employees are being met. Failure to do so results in criminal proceedings and, if found guilty, fines or jail sentences will be applied. In such circumstances the personal assets of the directors are at risk of being sold to pay obligations to employees, and/or taxes and fines.

If you are operating through a Company you do not have the option of taking drawings. When you use a company you can only take cash out in the form of wages or dividends. If you are operating as a sole trader or in a partnership you do not have the option of being employed by the business. This is because at law a person cannot employ themselves. In this situation you are limited to taking drawings that will be taxed on the net profit of the business.

“The ‘Four Cs’ are what make up the quality of the diamond: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight,” Mr Ely said.

“I believe the cut grade is the most important out of the four.

The cut has everything to do with the performance of the diamond, when I say performance I’m referring to the sparkle and scintillation that comes from the diamond, which all comes down to how well it’s cut.”

Mr Ely said diamonds come in a variety of colours, ranging from clear diamonds to those that have a yellow or brown tint.

“The less colour, the higher the grade. The scale goes from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown),” he said.

“Then we have clarity, which refers to the natural inclusions in the stone. Almost all diamonds have some internal imperfections that can be seen only under magnification.”

Mr Ely explained that the fewer flaws a diamond has, the higher its clarity grade and the more valuable it is.

Then of course you can choose your carat weight and go as big as your budget allows you.

“The worth of a diamond is determined by all of the ‘Four Cs’.

Size alone does not determine value,” he said.

Lung Support Group Monthly meeting

A Lung Support Group for Nepean Puffers and Wheezers meet at 10am on the second Wednesday of each month at Kingswood Neighbourhood Centre.

The Support Group is a member of the Australian Lung Foundation and works with people suffering from Asthma, Pulmonary Emphysema and various other respiratory disorders.

Go back in time this Sunday Nepean District Historical Archaeology Group will be holding their annual open day this Sunday, October 9 from 10am.

Locals can explore displays of unique artefacts from the region’s past, including crockery, farming equipment, and bricks among other pieces.

The free event will be held at the Archaeology Workshop on Station Street, opposite the entrance to Westfield Penrith.

MAYOR’S MESSAGE It is an honour to again represent Penrith as Mayor. I have served as Mayor previously (2005-06) and Deputy Mayor (2004-05) and I am proud to be elected as Mayor in a time when our City has in place several strategies to encourage investment and deliver real opportunities.

I acknowledge and thank Councillor Karen McKeown for her service over the past 12 months and the many achievements Council and the City have gained for our residents. I would also like to welcome new Councillors Todd Carney, Aaron Duke, Joshua Hoole and Ben Price as well as Kath Presdee who returns after serving on Council between 2008-12.

Penrith is a growth city with unlimited potential and we are well placed to meet the challenges ahead. Those who know our City, love Penrith, but we can’t afford to rest on our laurels. We need to make the most of every opportunity, act strategically and work collaboratively to achieve our vision.

Recently the Australian and NSW Governments released the Western Sydney Rails Needs Study as they look towards investing in transport infrastructure in Western Sydney. Penrith Council has long been an advocate for this infrastructure to connect outer Western Sydney in the North and South via the airport. This will activate new employment hubs and create significantly more jobs than an airport alone.

These bins accept household batteries, mobile phones, CDs, DVDs and light bulbs. Since installed in November 2015, 268kg of batteries, 36kg of mobile phones, 78kg of CDs and DVDs and 23kg of light bulbs have been dropped off for recycling.

COUNCIL SUPPORTS LOCAL COMMUNITY GROUPS Council has awarded more than $30,000 to 33 local non-profit community groups in our 2016-17 Community Assistance Program.

Residents around the City will benefit from the funded projects which include: • Children’s resources for Rooby’s Koori REaDing Corner • ‘No Boundaries’ Art open day for International Day of People with Disabilities • Birth and pamper packs for young parents • Technology equipment for the Penrith City Garden Club • Equipment for outdoor cinema events at North St Marys, St Marys and North Penrith • Portable sewing machines for the Caring Hearts Community Quilters • Penrith Community Kitchen’s Christmas Lunch • Street Care project for people at risk of homelessness • Recording equipment for Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy program • Supplies for the Nepean Men’s Shed and St Clair and District Men’s Shed • Promotional material for residents group ‘Team Colyton’ Council understands how challenging it can be for local hobby, volunteering and community groups to find those extra bits and pieces that go a long way to getting worthwhile ideas off the ground. The Community Assistance Program has been running for 22 years and Council is proud of the wide range of cultural, education and health based initiatives it has helped sustain, to directly benefit many local residents.

COUNCIL CONTINUES TO COOL THE CITY With summer approaching, it’s a good time to let our community know about Council’s achievements since adopting our Cooling the City Strategy. The Strategy is being delivered through a range of activities and projects, including: One Tree Per Child This international program is being rolled out in Penrith via local childcare centres. The first stage saw 1,500 plants given to local families in June, with another 1,500 plants distributed in September, and 69 trees were also planted at Council’s childcare centres to provide shade and amenity. The childcare centres are receiving teaching materials to help staff explore the value of trees to people and the environment with the children.

Urban Design We’re working to provide public spaces that are more suited to our local climate.

This includes approaches like more shade and providing splash pads to help people cool off, as seen in the plans exhibited for community feedback as part of our work on the Triangle Park.

Bus Shelter designs Council has received $80,000 in grant funding from the NSW Government under the Building Resilience to Climate Change program in a partnership project with the Institute for Sustainable Futures (UTS) and other Western Sydney councils. The project is based around a design competition for a bus shelter which is comfortable year round for our climate. Planning is now underway

Tree Planting Council has planted around 4000 trees over the past year, including those planted in partnership with schools as part of the Bushcare Education Program, National Tree Day, Trees for Mum and other initiatives.

Under the Federal Government’s 20 Million Trees Program Council has received funding of around $605,000 to plant 96,000 trees and shrubs in South Penrith, and another 3000 in Bunyarra Drive reserve at Emu Plains. These will provide much-needed shade and make open spaces more appealing for people and native animals and birds.

Tree Inventory We have undertaken an inventory of street trees in some of our most heat vulnerable areas to give us a better understanding of these important assets. Vacant or ‘opportunity sites’ were also identified and this will inform future planning for street tree planting programs in these areas.

INVESTING IN OUR PLAYGROUNDS Council continues working to improve playgrounds across the City, with major redevelopments occurring recently at Peppermint Reserve (Kingswood), Grey Gums Oval (Cranebrook), Barr and Bass Reserve (Colyton) and Kevin Dwyer Reserve (Colyton). Council’s asset renewal program and Section 94 Development Contributions have jointly funded these upgrades.

Access for all is an important priority for Council.

Council is committed to building a strong and equitable community. We sought input from residents and community partners about ways to make Penrith a better place for everyone living, working and playing here.

Growing up as a music enthusiast a career in the industry was never really a consideration, but when doors started opening Cushney couldn’t ignore them.

“Music wasn’t like a burning desire so much but it was something that once I saw the opportunities coming about I thought well if I don’t give it a go now and see what might occur I might miss the opportunity to try it,” he said.

“I always had a back up plan being that I was able to get a real job – and a good one at that – but I’ve never looked back after making the move [to music] because it’s been so successful.”

Cushney’s musical journey started with a move to Las Vegas and the formation of a Four Tops cover group who performed as part of the multi-million dollar productions ‘American Superstars’ and ‘Legends in Concert’.

The group – known as Spectrum – expanded their repertoire to include Motown and R&B hits and were joined by all female group Radiance to create the ‘Songs in the Key of Motown’ show which will be heading to the Evan Theatre at

Panthers tonight (October 7).

Being involved in the music scene in the sensory overload that is Las Vegas has been a wild ride for Cushney.

“It’s just such a high energy, potent environment for people who are in the entertainment business,” he said.

“It’s really inspiring to interact with the other artists and let them know when you’re performing and invite them to your shows and vice versa. You get to meet a lot of people you wouldn’t meet otherwise.”

Some of those people have included some very well known audience members like Gladys Knight, The Temptations and one of the biggest names in music.

“We had the honour of Michael Jackson himself coming to one of our shows,” Cushney said.

“A buddy of mine who impersonated Michael Jackson was in the same show as us. He had met Michael in Africa and so he let him know he was in this show and Michael ended up coming to the show.

“It’s definitely – as you can imagine – quite intimidating.

“You have another level of anxiousness and nervousness that kicks in but you just try to focus and make sure everything you practiced and rehearsed comes through.”

o mark the company’s 20th vintage, winemaker Peter Logan has released a very special 2016 Pinot Gris from his Logan Wines at Orange in NSW’s Central West.

Very special because firstly this wine has an unusual orange hue to it from including the grape skins in the ferment, something that is normally done only with red wines not with whites, and secondly because he’s named it Clementine – after little daughter of he and wife Hannah.

Peter says that including the skins in the ferment has given this Pinot Gris a fuller range of complex flavours than normal, a tang on the palate, and a crunchy finish from the tannins released into the wine from the skins.

“The flavours are more savoury than traditional Pinot Gris, and with the tannin cleaning the palate it makes for a great drop with a charcuterie board or cheese platter,” Peter adds.

One to note: New Zealand’s quirky-named Squealing Pig has released its first ever Syrah, from the 2015 vintage in Hawke’s Bay on the east coast of the country’s North Island (pictured).

The country’s oldest wine region dating back to 1851, Hawke’s Bay enjoys plenty of sunny days, and a particularly warm 2015 vintage resulted in fruit that year with great concentrations of flavour and ripeness, and resultant wines of wonderful elegance.

Red berries and dark cherry fruit flavours, coupled with dusty tannins in this 2015 Squealing Pig Syrah, make for it being a great match alongside lamb loin chops topped with a fennel relish. RRP $26.

Mark Wahlberg brings the story of one of the world’s largest man-made disasters to the big screen this week in ‘Deepwater Horizon’.

In April of 2010 an explosion and subsequent oil spill occurred on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico.

11 people lost their lives in the disaster, which led to the worst oil spill in US history.

This biographical action thriller, by director Peter Berg (‘Lone Survivor’ and ‘Collateral’), is a tribute to the brave workers whose courage saved many on board.

The film is based on the New York Times’ article ‘Deepwater Horizon’s Final Hours’ which detailed exactly what occurred on the rig and the

response from crew members.

So far ‘Deepwater Horizon’ has received positive reviews, with Rotten Tomatoes praising the film for being a gripping – yet respectfully serious – action thriller.

The cast includes Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, Gina Rodriquez, John Malkovich and Kate Hudson.

The somewhat expected announcement was delivered this week, with subscribers to be moved to a refreshed Foxtel Play platform. and cakes. These foods are classed as discretionary as they don’t provide any essential nutrients and are therefore not a necessary part of our diets.

On average we are eating three serves a day of these foods at the expense of more nutritious options like fruits and vegetables.

The CSIRO survey found that our top choices are

alcohol, chocolates and confectionery, cakes and biscuits and sugary beverages.

Now I’m sure no one’s particularly shocked by these results. With a wide range of heavily processed, nutrientvoid foods on our shelves, it’s clear we love our snacks.

With that in mind how do we go about making positive changes and keeping the treats to a minimum?

Well according to the CSIRO we should be focusing on “halving the bad and doubling the good”.

This is a strategy I’ve mentioned in this column previously. Often when we think of changing our diet we focus on cutting out foods, but what we need to do instead is to shift the focus to replacement rather than restriction.

For example, if you’re one of the Aussies who is consuming three discretionary items a day, a good starting point is to swap one of those servings for some nuts, fruit or veggie sticks and hummus. This way you’ve decreased the less nutritious foods in your diet, while adding to your fruit and vegetable intake.

Basically you’re killing two birds with one stone.

It may seem like a simple change but if you keep working at it one step at a time, you’re likely to maintain long term healthy eating habits.

How will the world come to an end? It is almost 60 years ago that Neville Shute wrote his classic novel On the Beach.

Since then, two movies have been made of the book, the classic 1959 black and white film with Gregory Peck and more recently in 2000 starring Australian actor Bryan Brown.

On the Beach tells the story of a nuclear war in the Northern Hemisphere which wipes out the whole world.

Throughout the story we see a cloud of poisonous radiation gradually making its way further and further south

The CSIRO Healthy Diet Score has surveyed more than 86,000 people in the last 18 months and the results aren’t great.

The survey – which assessed the eating habits of everyday Aussies against the Australian Dietary Guidelines – revealed an average participant score of just 59/100, otherwise referred to as a C grade.

So what is it about the way we eat that’s letting us down?

One of the main issues to come out of the report is discretionary foods. These include high-energy nutrientvoid foods like lollies, chips

Here are five tips to set your workspace up correctly to be more comfortable, become more productive and stop those aches and pains!

Starting At The Bottom You should be able to place your feet flat on the ground with your bottom at the back of the seat. Make the angle of your hips and knees so that your bottom is slightly higher than your knees. Let The Elbows Hang – No reaching Your elbows should be able to hang aligned under your shoulders not resting on the desk, allowing your shoulders to not be bunched up around your ears. Position the mouse close to the keyboard in a position where your wrists are straight, ensuring you do not slump to try to reach forward.

Look Forward At The Screen Bring your computer screen so that the top third of the screen is at eye level, use a stand if needed to get the screen to this height. This will allow you to sit up and take the pressure off your neck and upper back.

20-20-20 Rule Every 20 minutes look away from the screen 20 metres away for 20 seconds to help avoid strain on the eyes and neck.

Also be sure to adjust the brightness and contrast to a comfortable level.

Move It! Studies show that people who sit down for over 5-6 hours a day are at a higher risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. So make sure you get up and go for a walk every 20-30 minutes for a lap around the office or grab a cup of coffee.

he Sydney Roosters scored 24 unanswered points in the second half to claim the Holden Cup premiership, leaving Penrith to wonder what could have been.

On the verge of back-to-back titles, the Panthers somehow blew a 28-6 half-time lead, allowing the Roosters to dominate the second stanza and produce an unlikely victory at ANZ Stadium last Sunday.

There was plenty of open football in the early exchanges but it was the boys from Bondi who broke through first, with Joseph Manu crossing out wide to give the outsiders a 6-0 lead after 10 minutes.

The Panthers hit their straps soon after, however, with Christian Chrichton crossing out wide and then Corey Waddell pouncing on a Roosters error to put the minor premiers up 12-6 after 20 minutes.

Penrith continued to pile on the pressure and a great offload from captain Oliver Clark eventually set up South Sydneybound Braidon Burns to score out wide and extend the lead to 16-6.

The Roosters had several chances to return serve, but fell just short.

Penrith then extended their lead when Kaide Ellis crashed over under the posts, while a try to Wayde Egan just short of half-time saw the Panthers take an impressive 28-6 lead into the break.

The Roosters needed to score first in the second half and they did just that, with skipper and eventual Jack Gibson Medallist Nat Butcher crossing in the opening minutes to reduce the deficit to 28-12.

When Sitili Tupouniua barged over a few minutes later, the Roosters were well and truly back in the game at 28-18 with still half an hour to play.

With 14 minutes to go, a Penrith error saw Manu snare his second try, with the Panthers’ margin reduced to just four.

It brought the Grand Final to life, and when Johnny Tuivasa-Sheck scored a runaway try with seven minutes to go, the Roosters took the lead 30-28.

Penrith’s Dylan Edwards had a chance to level the game with a penalty goal four minutes from full-time but missed.

Merrin takes home prestigious honour Trent Merrin has brushed aside being snubbed by NSW Blues coach Laurie Daley to win Penrith’s player of the year award on Wednesday night.

Merrin, in his first season with the Panthers after joining the club from St George-Illawarra, won the Merv Cartwright Medal at a glittering event at Panthers.

26-year-old Merrin had a strong year for the Panthers, consistently leading the forward pack around the park.

Meanwhile, rampaging forward James Fisher-Harris and halfback Nathan Cleary jointly won the club’s Ben Alexander Rookie of the Year award.

Three Panthers to wear green and gold Matt Moylan has capped off a dream year by being named in the Kangaroos squad for the upcoming Four Nations.

Moylan was named captain of the Panthers at the start of the season and took the club to the Finals, while he also made his State of Origin debut this year.

On Tuesday he was named alongside teammates Trent Merrin and Josh Mansour in the Kangaroos squad.

The 24-man squad to play in the Four Nations in the UK against England, New Zealand and Scotland contains seven potential Kangaroos debutants.

The 42-year-old, who competes in numerous marathons and triathlons each year, was once again crowned female marathon champion at the annual Sydney International Regatta Centre-based event.

A record number of 1338 people took part in this year’s Western Sydney Marathon, which featured four events including the 42km marathon, 21km half marathon, 10km lap the lake, and 5km family fun run.

Speaking with the Weekender, Rickard admitted she was feeling rather anxious leading up to last Saturday’s race.

“I was asked to be an ambassador for the event and I must admit I felt a bit of pressure,” she said.

“I just tried to relax as best as I could on the day and I ended up feeling really good out there.

“The conditions weren’t as hot as in previous years but the strong wind made each lap harder and harder.”

Finishing in a time of 2:43:24, Davies bettered his result from last year by 25 seconds.

Skipper to miss season opener

ew Western Sydney Wanderers signing Jack Clisby is hopeful his first outing for his new club will be in front of more than 60,000 fans at ANZ Stadium.

The 24-year-old Western Australian was one of a dozen new faces to join Tony Popovic’s squad this off-season, and promised he’ll be doing all he can to be featured in this Saturday night’s season opener against Sydney FC. While Popovic’s final Sydney Derby line-up is yet to be determined, Clisby is hopeful he’s impressed his new coach enough to be considered.

“Nothing is set in stone but I’ve been fighting for my position all week, and have been doing everything I can to make sure that I’m available,” he said.

“It’s what we all work towards in the pre-season and that’s playing in the first week of the A-League.

“After a tough pre-season it’s finally come around and I can’t wait for the challenge.”

Clisby joined the Wanderers in August after stints with Perth Glory and Melbourne City. To date, he’s played 60 A-League games at both centre back and left back.

After incredibly losing their third Grand Final in four seasons last May, the Wanderers will be desperate to begin their 2016/17 A-League campaign with a victory over their cross-town rivals.

While Western Sydney enjoyed a decent pre-season with a number of convincing performances in the FFA Cup, Topor-Stanley said their three goal thrashing at the hands of City on September 21 wasn’t indicative of who the Wanderers are and aim to be.

“It wasn’t a great performance by us, we know that, but we know where we went wrong and it can be rectified,” he said.

“We’re a club that always learns, whether we’re winning or losing, it doesn’t matter. We’re not arrogant enough to think that if we win a game, that there’s no improvement to be had.”

Topor-Stanley was one of five Wanderers players in Penrith last Wednesday afternoon running football clinics and signing autographs for local kids. The former Socceroo said it was important to give back to the grassroots level.

Despite joining the club mid-way through the off-season, Clisby has settled in well.

“It’s a great club to be at and I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think it would be,” he said.

“I’ve already learned a lot so far under the boss (Popovic) and the coaching staff.

“As a player and as a person you get out what you put in at this club, and the standards are really high. I’m really enjoying it here at the moment.”

Another player looking to make his mark this season is 20-year-old central defender Jonathan Aspropotamitis.

Joining the club during the 2014/15 season, Aspropotamitis has only played 13 games in the top squad but is ready to take his game to the next level.

Aspropotamitis said he’s also eager to discover whether he’s made the cut for this weekend’s blockbuster.

“All the boys are looking forward to playing the first A-League game especially in front of 60,000 people against our fierce rivals,” he said.

“If I do get the chance to play on Saturday, I’ll need to keep a clear mind and relish the opportunity and try and play the best I can to help the team win.”

he Western Sydney Wanderers W-League team will call Kingswood home this season after Western Sydney University (WSU) secured a deal with the club to become its official training base.

The Wanderers W-League team will now be based out of WSU’s Kingswood Campus, and will utilise the local university’s training fields, gym, classrooms and accommodation facilities.

Speaking at Tuesday’s W-League launch, Dean of the School of Social Science and Psychology and Professor in Human Geography and Urban Studies, Kevin Dunn, said he was excited about the partnership.

“I was very supportive of Western Sydney University becoming an official corporate partner with the Wanderers – it suits us down to the ground,” he said.

“Training four mornings a week, these elite sportswomen and support staff will make use of our ovals, classrooms, gym and synthetic courts.”

Prof Dunn said the partnership will also be beneficial to certain WSU students, who will have access to an elite sporting team.

One Wanderers player who can’t wait to get stuck into the new facilities is defender Ellie Carpenter.

The 16-year-old star made headlines earlier this year after she became Australia’s youngest athlete at the Rio Olympics.

“I think this partnership with Western Sydney University is a great opportunity for us to train at a professional facility,” Carpenter told the Weekender.

“We have the pitch, gym, change rooms, study classrooms, so it’s a really good environment for us to be in.”

The university will also be home, literally, to Western Sydney’s four foreign players, who will live on campus when they arrive in the coming weeks.

“It’s great for our overseas players as it gives them a home at the university and they are also close to the training facilities,” Carpenter said.

“We have training four mornings per week – I’m up at 4.20am to get here. But it’ll be good for the girls who are living here.”

Western Sydney’s W-League team will open their 2016/17 campaign against Perth Glory on November 6 before a battle against Sydney FC on November 13.

CRICKET: The Penrith Cricket Club first grade side have won their second game of the season, defeating UNSW in Round 2 of the NSW Premier Cricket competition.

Playing in a One Day match at Howell Oval, Penrith won the toss and batted first, scoring 7/227 after 50 overs.

Penrith’s Jonathon Sammut topscored for Penrith with 78.

When UNSW went into bat later that day, they were dismissed for a lowly 178 runs.

Penrith’s Josh Lalor was once again best with the ball, taking 3/23.

PADDLING: PaddleNSW is holding a canoe and kayak ‘Come and Try Day’ aimed at kids aged 10 to 16-years-old.

Participants will be shown basic paddling techniques and will have the chance to enjoy paddling activities and games.

The event will take place on the lake at the Penrith Whitewater Stadium from 10.30am-1pm this Saturday, October 8.

There will be a range of kayaks to try, including slalom, canoe polo and freestyle boats.

n the eve of the opening game of the new A-League season, Western Sydney Wanderers skipper Nikolai Topor-Stanley has opened up about being rubbed out of this weekend’s most anticipated Sydney Derby of all-time.

The 31-year-old centre-back will miss Saturday night’s epic encounter at ANZ Stadium after he was dealt a red card during Western Sydney’s 4-1 FFA Cup loss to Melbourne City last month.

Topor-Stanley’s mindless challenge on City striker Bruno Fornaroli before half-time not only earned him his marching orders on the night, but also a one game suspension in what would’ve been one of the biggest regular season games of his career.

Speaking exclusively with the Weekender in Penrith last week, Topor-Stanley admitted he was still stinging that he’ll miss out on the chance of playing Sydney FC in front of more than 60,000 fans.

“It’s a bitter pill to swallow at the moment but that’s the game – you have to ride the highs and the lows,” he said.
