A

journey that began in November last year for Penrith’s Holden Cup team finished in the best way possible last Sunday afternoon with a premiership on rugby league’s biggest stage.

After finishing the regular season as minor premiers, the Panthers did the rugby league double by winning their second National Youth Competition decider in three years with a 34-18 win over the Manly Sea Eagles at ANZ Stadium.

The win kicked off a spectacular Grand Final Day at ANZ Stadium and confirmed Penrith’s status as a club on the rise.

Rookie Panthers coach Cameron Ciraldo said more than 12 months of hard work and preparation finally paid off for his young troops.

“I’m really pleased for the boys, a lot of hard work has gone into this,” he said.

“We started training in the first week of November last year and the amount of hard work and sacrifices they’ve made, I’m just really pleased for them.”

The Panthers were the most dominant team of the Holden Cup all year, losing just four games the entire season.

Heading into the match against Manly, the Panthers had defeated the Sea Eagles on three occasions already this season and were on track for a fourth victory when they went into the halftime break 16-12 leaders.

Despite injuries to star centre Robert Jennings and lock Reed Izzard, the Panthers still managed to pile on the points in the second half.

Part two of a $9.8 million investment was launched that includes the use of the ‘Thor’ Hercules C130 Large Air Tanker, ‘Southern Belle’ DC 10 Very Large Air Tanker, and the ‘Gypsy Lady’ Erikson Air Crane during this bushfire season and for the first time in NSW. ‘Southern Belle’ has the capacity to hold up to 44,000 litres of water while ‘Thor’ can hold 15,000 litres.

NSW Minister for Emergency Services David Elliot, Minister for Defence Senator Marise Payne plus crews from the NSW Rural Fire Service and NSW Fire and Rescue were on hand to warn the community about the upcoming summer season.

Mr Elliot said the new aircraft will provide some reassurance for the community.

“These two new aviation assets are going to provide reassurance to communities across the state that they will have as safe of a summer as possible,” he said.

“As we have said before, the best firefighting capabilities in the country will never be able to supersede a homegrown evacuation plan.

“Don’t assume that ‘Thor’ is always going to be over the horizon or that the Rural Fire Service will be able to knock on every door this summer.”

NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said the season is shaping up to be a hot one.

“This season is shaping up to be a difficult one as we have a strong El Nino that has formed,” he said.

“Forecast for the next three months will be above average temperatures and below average rainfall.”

‘Southern Belle’, ‘Thor’ and ‘Gypsy Lady’ are just three of more than 100 aircraft already contracted to support firefighting operations across NSW this bushfire season.

Queensland shows us how it’s done with tremendous Grand Final spirit I’ve got a shocking confession to make: I’ve developed a massive soft spot for Queensland.

In fact, I’m considering giving Greg Inglis a call to ask him how I can become a Queenslander despite being born in New South Wales.

And it’s not just because of the epic finale to last Sunday’s Grand Final at ANZ Stadium. It was a game for the ages and as an overly optimistic Penrith fan who purchased tickets for the season decider back in June, I was so glad to be there to watch that truly incredible final period.

As a sports fan there’s probably half a dozen ‘moments’ you’ll tell your kids about in years and decades to come, and there is little doubt that Sunday night will be one of them.

But what made the experience really special on Sunday was the spirit that existed inside the ground.

In Sydney, some of our great club rivalries are built on a near hatred for each other. Penrith and Parramatta, the Roosters and the Rabbitohs, Manly and just about anyone they play.

In Queensland, it’s a different scenario – the rivalry is built on an extraordinary mutual respect both on and off the field.

I sat next to a family who had made the trek from Brisbane to cheer on their beloved Broncos.

For 79 minutes and 59 seconds, they thought they had the game won. When it was taken away from them in the dying moments, they stood and applauded. There was a realisation that something special was unfolding – and they were simply overjoyed to be part of it.

It was reflective of others in the crowd throughout the night and was exemplified after the match when only a handful of the 82,000-plus crowd missed the presentation.

I’ve been to plenty of big events at ANZ Stadium and I’ve never seen so many people stay for a post-match presentation.

selves on the wrong side of police and security, a significant improvement on previous years.

There was a time when I’d hate a Grand Final without a Sydney team involved. Just like there was a time when I thought Queensland’s State of Origin dominance was just becoming boring and repetitive. But now my thoughts have shifted from jealousy and ignorance to enormous respect and privilege.

On reflection it has been a privilege to be able to watch Queensland’s extraordinary State of Origin run, halted only once in the last decade

by New South Wales. A privilege to watch players like Johnathan Thurston, Billy Slater, Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Greg Inglis play in the same side as each other – superstars of our game whose names will live on and be known by those never fortunate enough to see them play.

It was certainly a privilege to be in the stands on Sunday night to watch the first ever allQueensland Grand Final and to see both Johnathan Thurston and Ben Hunt enter Grand Final folklore – for very different reasons.

The final game of Justin Hodges; the master coach Wayne Bennett; the new champion mentor Paul Green; and two sets of fans that are among the most dedicated in the league.

All great Queensland stories.

Rather than loathe and complain about Queensland dominance, we should admire it.

It has given us some of the greatest ever rugby league moments, and we’ve been around to witness them. You might not think so now, but when the dust settles and we look back on this era, we’ll be glad we saw it unfold before our eyes.

15-year-old lucky injuries weren’t more serious after South Penrith accident JADE ALIPRANDI

15-year-old girl was taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital after she lost control of a vehicle she was driving and crashed into a telegraph pole on Tuesday afternoon.

Paramedics say the accident happened on Hilliger Road, South Penrith just before school finished at about 2.20pm.

They arrived at the scene on the quiet residential street to find the young girl trapped inside the vehicle.

Acting Duty Operations Manager at Penrith Ambulance Station, Michael Magyary, said it was lucky she was wearing her seatbelt at the time.

“The girl was taken by ambulance to hospital suffering from a chest injury and a deep cut to her knee,” he said.

“She was assessed at the scene and she was taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital to ensure she didn’t suffer any further injuries as the force of the car against the pole was quite heavy.

“It was lucky that she was wearing her seatbelt which saved her from sustaining any injuries to the head area.”

It’s understood the girl lost control of the car and subsequently crashed into the pole. Police are investigating the circumstances behind the crash.

On Wednesday, the teenager remained in a serious but stable condition, but she is expected to make a full recovery.

Her mother Melissa (surname withheld), pleaded with parents to speak with their children about road safety.

“I ask all parents to talk to their children about the dangers of driving when not experienced or licensed as no family should have to go through what mine and many other families have experienced,” she told the Weekender.

She said there were “circumstances” surrounding the lead-up to the crash, but asked for those to remain private.

Kingswood Park: Dog attacks seven-year-old boy

Cranebrook: Police charge man after stopping vehicle

A seven-year-old boy was taken to hospital late last week after a dog bit him on the face.

The boy was playing in the backyard of a friend’s house at Kingswood Park last Thursday, October 1, when at about 1pm, the boy picked up an object.

It’s understood the dog, a Staffy cross Bullmastiff, may have resented this as it then bit the child on the face.

The boy was taken to Nepean Hospital suffering lacerations to his cheek, ear and lip.

On Tuesday, a spokesperson at Nepean Hospital said a patient matching the boy’s description had been discharged.

The owners were reportedly distressed at what had happened, and the decision was made to euthanise the dog.

A man was arrested and charged late last week after police officers allegedly found items relating to firearms, including a firearm and ammunition, in his possession.

In a region-based operation that targeted various offences and was titled ‘Operation Countdown’, officers attached to Penrith Local Area Command stopped a vehicle on Heffernan Road in Cranebrook at about 10.20pm on Thursday, October 1 after suspicious activity.

Once the car was stopped, the passenger in the vehicle got out of the car and allegedly dropped, what police believe to be, a magazine from a pistol on the ground.

Police challenged the man, who is in his early 20s.

He started running away from the police officers when he allegedly threw an object at them and then continued to run away.

Police allege the object thrown was a revolver firearm.

Police were able to catch the man and stopped him running. They arrested the man and charged him.

He was charged with a number of offences including ‘possess prohibited weapon’, ‘possess unregistered firearm’, ‘possess ammunition’, and ‘resist police arrest’.

He is due to appear in Penrith Local Court on October 27.

The vehicle was seized by police after further searching.

The other occupant of the car managed to avoid apprehension, police said.

Investigations continue.

Police officers attached to Penrith Local Area Command were part of ‘Operation Slow Down’ that ran on the long weekend, with several driving offences targeted.

Highway Patrol as well as general duty officers were out in force from Friday morning, October 2 until Monday, October 5 at midnight as part of the operation.

2600 road side breath tests were done, 160 traffic infringements were given and 115 speeding tickets were issued.

Detective Acting Inspector at Penrith Police Station, Shane Wheeler, said these figures indicate people aren’t listening to the warnings.

Can greyhound racing survive?

espite a scandal that threatens to crush the greyhound racing industry across the country, locals have confidence it will survive and get stronger in the future.

After a public hearing inquiry into the greyhound racing industry, interim CEO of Greyhound Racing NSW, Paul Newson, said an entirely new leadership team has been appointed to work on a proactive reform process.

“The changes we have already made, combined with further policy changes to be announced in coming months, mean that the industry is well positioned to move forward,” he said.

General Manager of the Londonderrybased Richmond Race Club, Wayne Billett, said their race attendances have not been impacted since live baiting allegations surfaced in February.

“Our trading has still remained fairly consistent. This indicates to me that the community has confidence in processes that have now been implemented,” he said.

“The industry has made lots of changes and participants have adopted these and have moved on, and if they continue to do that, the confidence should remain.”

“Our dogs have blankets on their beds, have air conditioning in their kennels, ceiling fans and there is water recycling over the roof that cools the roof down,” he said.

“We have compliance officers coming to our property all the time to inspect the welfare of the dogs.”

Mr Proctor has no fears for the future of the industry.

“Breeding is down a little bit because people were uncertain of the industry, but greyhound racing is a great sport.

People just have to come out and look at the industry,” he said.

One of Penrith’s standout performers was the game’s first try scorer, Soni Luke, who took home the Jack Gibson Medal for Man of the Match.

The 19-year-old local junior said it was an amazing feeling to win on rugby league’s biggest day.

“It was a really good experience to play on Grand Final Day, it was such a relief when the siren went knowing all our hard work had paid off,” he said.

“I’ve been lucky enough to be with Penrith since I was 12, getting here today has really been exciting and a dream come true.

“We had team goals and really stuck to them all year. We pride ourselves on defence and I think that went a long way to winning the comp.”

Coach Ciraldo agreed with his young hooker’s honour, saying it was thoroughly deserved.

“I’ve known Soni for three or four years now. I was there when he lost an SG Ball Grand Final and saw how shattered he was,” he said.

“I know how hard he works, he’s definitely one of my favourite players.

He’s a massive footy head and he’ll make a good coach one day. He’s just a lovely kid.”

PUBLIC NOTICE Notice of public hearing planning proposal reclassifying certain public land in St Marys Town Centre Council has arranged an independently chaired public hearing for its proposal to reclassify certain public land in St Marys Town Centre. The land is generally located adjacent to the existing shopping centres in the Town Centre (Station Plaza and St Marys Village) and consists of open space and car parking. The land is already zoned to allow mixed-use development (residential, retail and business).

The proposal recommends changing the classification of the land from Community to Operational to prepare the land to allow Council to consider opportunities that will grow the Town Centre and implement the adopted St Marys Town Centre Strategy 2006.

These opportunities include the sale, lease and/or development of the land, none of which can be considered if the land remains Community Land.

The proposal was on public exhibition from 24 August to 21 September 2015 and the exhibition material remains available to view (by request) at Penrith Civic Centre or online at http://yoursaypenrith.com.au/StMarysTownCentre.

The process that Council must follow to exhibit and consider the proposal requires an independently chaired public hearing. The chair of the hearing will then provide Council with a report on the hearing, which will also be made public. The hearing will commence at 5.30pm on Wednesday, 21 October 2015 at St Marys Corner Community and Cultural Precinct. Please note the amendment of the original date and time for the hearing (13 October 2015 at 6pm) that was published on 25 September 2015.

There may be additional sessions arranged subject to the number of people who wish to address the hearing.

If you wish to address the hearing, you will need to register. This can be done by completing the form available on Council’s website or from our Penrith or St Marys offices and submitting it to Council by 5pm on 19 October 2015. Alternatively, you can call 4732 7703 to register. We will request advice on the approximate length of time people would like to speak to allow the hearing schedule to be arranged (a maximum of 15 minutes). You do not have to register to address the hearing, but priority will be given to people who do.

In case it is relevant to whether you wish to speak or for how long, please note that the independent chair will also review all written submissions made in response to the recent public exhibition.

Ayres says Labor’s TAFE campaign is dishonest DALE DRINKWATER

abor has launched a petition to save Kingswood TAFE and stop Government cuts.

State Member for Londonderry, Prue Car and Shadow Ministers Adam Searle and Sophie Cotsis are seeking 10,000 signatures that will make sure the issue will be debated on the floor of Parliament.

But State Penrith MP Stuart Ayres has accused the Opposition of being dishonest with the community.

Labor’s Duty MLC for Penrith, Mr Searle, said the Government is creating structural disincentives, leading to a future skills shortage.

“This is a Government by the North Shore, for the North Shore. They just do not care about the people out here,” he said.

“If we get 10,000 signatures, we can provoke a debate in the Lower House where the Government will actually have to respond to those concerns.”

The petition calls on the Legislative Assembly to stop cuts to TAFE funding that Labor says are increasing fees, reducing enrolments, reducing the number of courses and sacking staff.

“These cuts have been underway for

the last four years – over a billion dollars, 2,500 teachers less, 30,000 less students,” Mr Searle said.

Ms Car made reference to a leaked cabinet document suggesting the Government will strip a further $63 million from TAFE buildings and shut down regional campuses.

“These revelations came out under Freedom of Information, but the cuts to TAFE have been happening since the Government’s election in 2011,” she said.

Ms Car holds grave concerns for the future of Kingswood TAFE that has provided thousands of locals with the skills they need to get a job.

“TAFE students are worried they will not be able to continue with their studies, and that’s what I’m hearing from this community every day,” she said.

“Student numbers at TAFE Colleges in western Sydney are falling every day and this is not acceptable.”

But Mr Ayres said the NSW Government’s investment in VET and TAFE this financial year is 11 per cent higher than in 2010-11 under Labor.

“With more money being invested in TAFE this year than in any year under Labor, perhaps they should spend more time being honest with the community,” he said.

Your guide to a stereotypical summer The weather is getting hotter, and we’ve compiled a list of things you can be sure to see this summer emperatures soared in Penrith and other areas of Sydney earlier this week, and with summer approaching we’ve put together the Weekender’s Summer Stereotype guide – to help you through the puns, predictabilities and clichÊs ahead. This is what you can expect to see this summer:

TV reporters in Penrith Throughout the summer, you can expect to see both major TV networks – Channel 7 and Channel 9 – present their weather bulletins live from Penrith.

Apparently telling us how hot it was on a particular day has much more impact if it’s done live at the scene of such heat, even though the hottest part of the day has come and gone by the time they go to air.

If we’re lucky, they might even talk to a couple of locals to confirm that it actually did feel hot. Prime locations for such reports will be Penrith Pools and the Nepean River.

People surprised by how hot it is Expect people to talk to you about how hot it is, as if it’s some sort of rare, unexpected event. Just like when winter reaches its coldest points in June and July, it seems we all have short-term memories about the weather patterns that come and go every single year. “How hot is it� will be the leading rhetorical question of the summer.

Social media’s bikini meltdown No longer is it about having a ‘beach body’, what girls are really preparing for this summer is a ‘social media body’. Go to the beach without your phone? Never!

Expect to see your Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts full of shots from Sydney’s beaches – you’ll see some of your friends in a whole new light. And there will be a significant variety too – selfies, group shots, staged shots, filtered shots, non-filtered shots... the list goes on.

The Daily Mail to be in overdrive The Daily Mail is surely putting on more staff to deal with the social media bikini phenomenon.

Whatever it may be, our friends at the various weather agencies will make sure we’re shocked and stunned by this new record being set.

Cricket – and lots of it From the usual summer Tests through to one day matches and the Big Bash League, there will be plenty of cricket throughout the months ahead. For those of us who grew up with Richie Benaud and Tony Grieg dominating our summers, things aren’t quite the same anymore. But some things never change and we can expect to enjoy some fantastic commentary and cross-promotions for ‘The Block’.

Council demands a seat at the table Mayor says public’s view has shifted on airport, but Penrith must have a say on key issues DALE DRINKWATER

enrith City Council has launched a new ambitious campaign to make sure Penrith’s voice is heard to get the most out of the new Badgerys Creek Airport.

Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said the airport construction and operation offers huge opportunities for Penrith and western Sydney, that need to be utilised.

“Western Sydney is Australia’s fourth largest economic region and we agree, it deserves its own airport,” she said.

“However it is the broader opportunities that flow from an airport that can really transform Penrith.”

Cr McKeown said the airport needs to add jobs in western Sydney, and be supported by transport infrastructure, such as a rail link.

“Already $3.6 billion has been directed to roads that will serve this city,” she said.

“Now we are advocating for passenger rail to run from the airport to the Western Line and for that to be surrounded by innovative developments that are dense with jobs.”

Since the Federal Government announced Badgerys Creek as the site

Council wants to have a say on issues surrounding a new airport at Badgerys Creek of Sydney’s second airport in April last year, Council has liaised with experts in environment, technical and aviation industries.

Cr McKeown said over time, attitudes have changed toward the prospect of a second Sydney airport in the west.

“The tide has shifted since 1996 when local residents were strongly opposed to the airport,” she said.

“The best opportunity to get benefits for our residents is by being at the table when decisions are being made.”

Council has indicated key themes they

will advocate to the Federal Government, such as: A seat at the table: The ability to influence the planning of the airport and surrounding areas on behalf of our communities.

Roads and trains: Vital road and rail infrastructure must be in place before the opening of the airport.

Looking after our health and environment: Environmental and social impacts in the EIS must be addressed and managed to ensure the health and wellbeing of the community.

Hear us on noise: The noise impacts on our community must be minimised and the Sydney Airport Curfew Act 1995 must be amended to apply to both Sydney and the future airport.

Show us the jobs and build our economy: The airport should create the number and type of jobs our community want, and drive economic development in western Sydney.

Knowledge plus skills equals opportunities: Centres for learning, education and research should be established.

An airport of the 21st Century: The western Sydney Airport should be an iconic site that delivers world’s best practice in access, employment and technology.

Airport needs to deliver more Making sure the community’s voice is heard and Penrith receives more than just an airport is the aim of a targeted campaign by Council.

We recognise there are huge opportunities for western Sydney and indeed, Penrith’s residents as a result of the airport construction and operation but this will only happen if it’s fully integrated and connected with the region. A new document ‘Western Sydney Airport – Maximising benefits, minimising impacts’ underpins the campaign and has already been provided to government agencies and representatives As Australia’s fourth largest economy, it makes sense for Western Sydney to have its own airport. Council has argued the airport needs to be supported by transport infrastructure and create jobs in western Sydney. Already $3.6 billion has been directed to roads that will serve the airport but we need infrastructure spending to go further.

We’re advocating for passenger rail to run from the airport to the Western

Line and the expediting of the Outer Sydney Orbital, connecting innovative developments that are dense with jobs, even before the airport opens.

The Federal Government is expected to release the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in late October.

We’ve joined with a number of other councils to fund an independent review of the EIS by experts in a range of fields including noise, social impacts and biodiversity and we’ll compile a detailed submission on behalf of our city.

I encourage you to review the EIS for yourselves and also make a submission about any concerns you have – this is our opportunity to speak up.

Fighting Domestic Violence

$100 million in funding will benefit vulnerable local women in desperate need of assistance DALE DRINKWATER

he Nepean Domestic Violence Network has welcomed the Federal Government’s recent $100 million domestic violence package, that could extend current services and provide more technology to locals in need.

Jane Gold, Manager at Penrith Women’s Health Centre (PWHC) said sadly, she doesn’t think funding will ever be enough, but this commitment is better than nothing.

“Any money towards support services for domestic violence is gratefully accepted,” she said.

Funding will go towards a variety of support and services to women such as trialing new technology, including GPS trackers on perpetrators and providing safer technology such as ‘safe phones’.

Ms Gold said funding could allow the PWHC’s Nepean Domestic Violence Network to expand its current services to more women, and for longer.

“We have some SOS devices but have to ‘play God’ and decide who gets it,” she said.

“Women receive them for a period of three to six months, but if we had more

of them they could keep them there for longer.”

Ms Gold said the devices have so far worked very well, and have given women more freedom.

“The SOS devices have been set off twice by our women, and one ended up having a man arrested who is now in jail,” she said.

“They know someone can help them quickly so they have started to live again.

So that’s been really good.” $17 million will go towards installing CCTV cameras and safety equipment inside victims’ homes, which Ms Gold said will protect victims while things are ‘critical’.

“It means we have that footage if someone is coming to the front door,” she said. “[In one case] we recorded two men who we think the perpetrator sent around to scare her. It proved to the police she wasn’t making it up.”

tudents from local schools are set to experience a new way of learning with a program that will specifically target their interests.

The ‘Enriching The Learner’ program is part of the combined thinking of the culture team from the Glenmore Park Learning Alliance.

A two-hour pilot workshop for the program will run on October 14 with the team providing eight different workshops, with some unlike the normal subjects offered at school.

Dance, drama, music, law, public speaking and debating, Italian, visual arts, and Indigenous studies will run on the day and are all on the plan to offer the students if the program goes ahead.

Two students from eight local schools have been selected by their teachers to participate in the program with a total of 16 students and one teacher supervising in each workshop.

Classroom teacher at Regentville Public School and team member of the culture team, Glyn Jones, said the program will be positive for the students.

“I think it’s a fantastic concept,” Mr Jones said.

The awards were launched on Tuesday morning with the community now able to nominate a police officer who they feel may have helped or done outstanding work for them or someone else.

Designed to recognise the efforts of the police officers who work in the St Marys LAC, the awards night brings in over 200 guests each year and is always a fantastic evening.

Community members are invited to nominate a police officer for a Community Award, with the officers at the station able to nominate each other for the Peer Award.

Officers from St Marys Police Station, members from St Marys Rotary Club, Parliamentary members and sponsors of the awards dinner were all in attendance on Tuesday to officially launch the nomination period.

“The enthusiasm for this campaign just continues to grow,” Penrith Mayor, Karen McKeown said at the launch.

On Wednesday, 12 Sydney schools battled it out to win the cash prize of $250 at the Sydney Picasso Cows 2015 school program.

The 12 week program required students to paint a blank canvas of a life-sized, fibreglass cow into an impressive dairyrelated art work.

Emu Heights Public School Principal, Mike Prunty, said the children and Assistant Principal Kerri Rooney put a huge amount of work into the project.

“It wasn’t a design task, they had to produce a learning journal about why they chose the designs they did in line with our theme, ‘Farm to Plate’,” he said.

Mr Prunty said the cow will live in the school’s vegetable garden and pond area, and the prize money will go towards enhancing that area.

How? By participating in the NSW Government’s Fridge Buyback Scheme.

The Scheme, now in its seventh year, makes it easier than ever for Penrith residents to save on their power bills by giving up their second fridge or upright freezer.

Rene Hendriksen, Manager of Fridge Buyback, said every stakeholder involved

in the scheme benefits greatly, and most importantly, so does the environment.

“Many people are running a second fridge or freezer that they don’t really need,” she said.

“Fridge Buyback helps residents cut their energy bills, which also has a positive environmental impact by reducing carbon emissions.”

Over time, the scheme has collected over 755 fridges in the Penrith Local Government Area, with an estimated 19,224 second fridges still sitting in residents’ homes.

Penrith Council has accepted $1.1 million in grants from the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS). Each year, the RMS provides Road Funding Grants to councils, to assist with maintenance of regional roads, road safety and traffic issues. $500,000 will go towards the ‘Road Component’ for maintenance of regional roads in the Penrith Local Government Area, which is indexed at two per cent more than last year’s grant. A further $156,000 will go towards the ‘Supplementary Road Component’ of the grant, the same amount as last year, that will see the resurfacing of a section of Castlereagh Road. The third component is for ‘Traffic Facilities’. This $453,000 is also indexed at two per cent more than last year, and will be for the installation and maintenance of signs and lines on local and regional roads.

Council received three submissions from The Smith Family, Thorndale Foundation and State-wide Services Australia during the public exhibition of its draft Charity Clothing Bins policy. Council proposed minor changes to the draft policy following these submissions, adopted these changes and thanked these organi-

sations for their submissions. Such changes include the clarification of charities as the owner/operator and the ability to be able to endorse second parties on their behalf.

Council committed to distributing bins across the city equally, and will use their discretion in the approval process of what organisation gets their bin where.

Councillors have deferred a decision to award a landscaping company in Seven Hills a tender to construct a sports field and infrastructure at Glenmore Park. The second stage of construction was to be awarded to Landscape Solutions Pty Ltd for almost $1.3 million, but Councillor Bernard Bratusa disagreed. Councillor Marcus Cornish seconded Cr Bratusa’s suggestion to defer the report, and said he wanted it to come back to a briefing. “We should be supporting local businesses instead of those outside [the city],” he said. Two Penrith Businesses, Josa Constructions Pty Ltd and JK Williams Contracting Pty Ltd submitted tenders, but were unsuccessful.

Councillors will now discuss further who should be awarded the tender for the work.

wo high school friends have managed to track down almost 100 people from their graduating class at St Dominic’s College and will mark 20 years since graduation with a reunion.

The graduating class of 1995 will be getting together at the end of the month thanks to fellow students, Luke Swannell and Dane Blom.

“I just posted a throwaway comment on Facebook about the idea of a reunion and it kind of just got legs from there,” Mr Swannell said.

“It will be good to catch up and just the fact we have been able to track down these people is a really cool thing,” Mr Blom added.

The pair say that they have used

social media to track down their old class mates, with around 60 people still unable to be contacted.

Mr Swannell said his memories from school are about how much the teachers cared about the students.

“You look back and know that you never really wanted to be there at the time but you realise now what a great school it was and is,” he said.

“I was a bit of a rat bag myself and didn’t really turn up to class much but I remember my year coordinator actually turning up on my door step to take me to school personally.

“It just demonstrates the mentality they had and how much they actually care about the students.”

Cardiac Support Group Annual dinner tickets on sale

The Nepean Blue Mountains Cardiac Support Group (NBMCSG) are reminding the community not to miss out on a ticket to their annual dinner.

Held at the Emu Plains Sporting Club on Leonay Parade, an auction will be held on the night with around $3,000 worth of items up for grabs.

All funds raised will be going back to the NBMCSG so they can continue the work they carry out for the cardiac unit at Nepean Hospital.

A two-course meal is included in the ticket purchase as well as a fun night out for everyone.

It will be held on Friday, October 16 at 6pm.

Ticket sales end today, October 9 and are just $30 per person.

DamFest 2015

Sunday, October 18 It’s free, it’s fun and it’s on next weekend at Warragamba.

Fridges will benefit community

Government grant helps WestCare continue vital services WestCare Community Services now have five commercial refrigeration units thanks to a NSW Government grant.

Westcare Assistant Director, Andrew Paech, said the $14,513 grant has tripled the Emergency Relief Service’s storage capacity for fresh and frozen food.

“This has become increasingly important at a time when more families in challenging situations are turning to us for assistance,” he said.

WestCare were able to increase the number of refrigeration units purchased from two to five – three freezers and two fridges, all 1335 litre glass door units – after some generous pricing from the manufacturer.

Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres was delighted to recommend WestCare for funding.

“These additional units will enable them to continue providing their services to the Penrith community,” he said.

WestCare have been helping people in Penrith for over 30 years and are local charity partners of Foodbank, Oz Harvest and Sydney Direct Fresh Produce.

Turning back Time

Aussie Arms is Penrith to the core Through many owners and generations, the Australian Arms Hotel has served the people of Penrith well. Dale Drinkwater takes a look back at its very special history in the local area...

D

espite a high turnover of owners since its beginning prior to 1860, the Australian Arms Hotel has been an icon in Penrith, where people would gather, see friends

and have a drink.

And even today, in 2015, it remains one of the most recognisable and popular hotels in Penrith.

Since the early 1800s, the first inns in the Penrith district provided an important service to convicts, soldiers and settlers who worked hard and relieved their dreariness with alcohol.

During this time, travelling was slow, and local hotels and inns would provide news and information to people who could travel no more than 30 kilometres a day.

By 1825, licensees were required to provide accommodation to travellers, and by 1830 legally had to keep an oil lamp burning outside from sundown to sunrise.

However, the most important service of hotels and inns was the sale of liquor.

After World War II, Penrith grew quickly.

Hotels in the area grew not only in size, but in numbers, and with that came the Australian Arms Hotel.

There is speculation that the site close to the corner on Castlereagh Street North (Lawson Street) and High Street, Penrith, was first occupied by a man by the name of Hogan.

As early as 1860, Hogan ran a business on the site, then left the area to prospect for gold.

A man named Thomas Andrews then opened a butcher shop in High Street and in 1974 opened a hotel, also known as a public house, beside it on the corner.

It is suggested Mr Andrews saw the profitability in a public house, and became the first licensee of the Australian Arms Hotel.

Mr Andrews owned and operated the hotel for almost 20 years before passing away in 1877, ironically from liver congestion.

From then, his wife Harriet Andrews kept ownership of the hotel and by the late 1890s it was so popular, Mrs Andrews facilitated the construction of a whole new building on the site.

At the time, a woman was allowed to be licensee of a hotel, but she had to have a man manage the bar.

However, Mrs Andrews’ health also began to deteriorate, and after suffering a severe case of gangrene, she passed away in 1901.

In the last two years of her life, Mrs Andrews had a man named Percy Hallett lease the hotel, who at the time advertised it as ‘accommodation with civility and attention’.

After Mrs Andrews’ death, the new owner, Mr A Roberts, and new licensee Mr Aughey, had the hotel thoroughly renovated and refitted in 1908.

In the 15 years between 1912 and 1927, the hotel changed licensees six times, with several licensees only running the hotel for around a year each.

During this time between 1919 and 1955, hotels had to close at 6pm, and only genuine travellers from at least 50 kilometres outside the area were allowed to be drinking in the hotel after that time.

However, this law benefited Penrith that was situated the perfect distance from Sydney city for drinkers who wanted a

night out, and the Australian Arms Hotel continued to prosper.

After 1927, the hotel had many owners before Frances Fulton purchased it in 1939.

Upon purchasing, the ‘Licensing Board’ demanded that Mrs Fulton completely pull down the hotel that was in disrepair and rebuild from scratch.

At the time, the hotel had seven bedrooms, with no hot water and no shower cubicles.

One wall was damp, several rooms’ floors were decayed and dust was rampant through the wooden ceilings.

Mrs Fulton reluctantly had the premises rebuilt, and continued to trade until 1960 when she sold it to Tooheys Pty Ltd. In 2002, the hotel was taken over by a syndicate between Anne and Jan Quinn, Ricky and Kaylie Stuart and Vicky Creary.

To this day, under new owners, Peter and Matthew McCoy, the Australian Arms Hotel is still serving its community the same way it did when it first opened.

It still offers a place where friends can gather and have a drink in the cool, to escape Penrith’s heat after a long hot day of work in the summer sun.

Your choice really does matter: NDIS is here ow the NDIS has rolled out in the Nepean and Blue Mountains areas for under 18-yearolds, My Choice Matters wants to make sure people are prepared to get the most out of it.

With an individualised approach at its centre, the NDIS promises unrivalled choice, voice and control for people with disability across Australia.

However, My Choice Matters Program Manager, Shae Gibson, said for the NDIS to succeed people with disability will need to be well prepared.

“They will need to be thinking and planning early, going in to meetings already knowing what they want, with the skills to articulate and argue its necessity,” she said.

“As kids grow into young adults and become part of this process, it is vital that they learn these skills and get prepared to have their voice matter.”

One young woman with an intellectual disability, Alanna Julian, already has individualised funding and said young people need to be thinking sooner rather than later.

“You need to start thinking about what is most important to you, what

do you want for a better life? This could be training for a particular type of job, learning a new skill or a daily living skill,” she said.

“So start thinking about these questions, jot your answers down, talk to your family and friends, and attend a workshop.”

Ms Julian said the NDIS will be a ‘door opening’ opportunity for many, so people need to ‘Think, Plan, Act’.

“Remember, the more prepared you are now the more you will be able to maximise the opportunities from the NDIS,” she said.

My Choice Matters will be in Penrith on October 24 running a fun and interactive workshop for 14 to 17-year-olds with a disability, where parents will also get the opportunity to talk to staff about what the NDIS will mean for their family.

Passing the buck: Are you a negative business person?

ou may know of people who seem to always have someone or something to blame for their circumstances or problems.

Those same people are likely to be quite negative about life in general, seeing situations from a ‘glass half empty’ perspective.

In business, this is an especially detrimental attitude to have. It is a path to nowhere. Blaming staff, partners, or external factors on the lack of success in your business means you are not taking responsibility.

Although it can be tempting, and even perhaps seem logical, to blame others, what you are doing is subconsciously affirming that you are not accountable for what happens in your business.

A better way to operate is to take responsibility for whatever happens in your business: the good and the bad.

Constructively ask “How can we do this better in the future?” and “How can we correct this?”.

You will always find an action you can take to make a situation better for the future.

Learn from negative experiences and

use them to build in safe guards and move forward.

Even worse than ‘passing the buck’ is ‘playing the victim’. You might hear a victim say something like “I wanted to launch my new business idea but the economy wasn’t good”.

Conversely, successful business women aim for what they want, regardless of the economy, resources or other factors.

They don’t use external circumstances as an excuse to stall an idea.

It is important to remember that you are the person steering your business.

And only you can decide how, and if, to move forward. There will always be circumstances beyond your control but it is up to you whether they determine your success.

Accept right now ‘what is’, and then proactively take actions that may improve or change what ‘could be’.

There are no guarantees for success.

But I can guarantee that if you do nothing, nothing will change.

If you are in a negative situation, the best course of action is to turn it into a positive action.

I

enjoy helping start-up businesses just as much as I do growing businesses.

There is an art to it. Some parts are in your control and some aren’t.

There is no set formula for start-up success but people must pay attention to the statistics and the advice you can grab and take advantage of. Let’s firstly not forget that this success consists of tonnes of hard work, some funding, a bit of luck, vision and timing.

Thinking through success stories and failures, my advice for potential start-ups is: • Don’t go it alone. I am biased but it’s the most important. Access a business advisor, accountant, trusted friend or another contact you have that can assist you. This point also includes outsourcing. Don’t try and do everything yourself.

• Know your audience. Who are you trying to reach? Who needs your product or information? Take the time to do market research and list out who you are selling to and where you can find them – both online and offline.

• Just do it. Whilst timing is important,

it is also something that you can’t always control. Timing the launch right when the market wants it is great. But don’t wait until everything is perfect because that time will never come. Plan and then be prepared to make changes along the way.

Make customers a high priority.

Customer service is so important.

Your customers keep you in business and they can do more than just buy from you – think referrals, feedback.

Be different. You need to know the difference between you and your competitors.

Choose employees carefully. We know it is difficult to keep employees as you grow. However, employees that are looking for quick progression are the last people you want to hire at the start. You need people who are willing to see your vision and stick with you.

Charge what you are worth and be clear. Don’t undervalue yourself firstly. You also must be clear not only with potential clients, but you must know for yourself what you need to earn to keep your business afloat.

W

hen talking to cou nt r y music icon Lee Kernag h a n about his latest album ‘Spirit of the Anzacs’, there’s a strong sense of the responsibility that comes with such a project.

“It took two years of research,” Lee explains.

“We worked very closely with the historical department at the Australian War Memorial just to ensure the authenticity of everything that had been written and recorded.”

The idea for the album came to Lee a few years ago after a visit to the Australian War Memorial, where he explored archival material which led to a deeper understanding of the individual stories of those involved in conflicts throughout history.

“As I was reading the letters I was absolutely overcome with emotion, reading the words of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and the nurses and their families,” he said.

“I think it was at that point that the idea to adapt their words, their honest noble words, to music began.”

The album, which was released this year and coincided with the 100th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli, reached number one on the ARIA charts and Lee admits that he wasn’t surprised by the overwhelmingly positive reaction.

“It was wonderful to see the nation

embrace the album the way they did, but I wouldn’t have expected anything less,” he said.

“All we ever wanted to do was honour our servicemen and women, and take people on a journey from the landing at Gallipoli right through to the war in Afghanistan.”

But for Lee these are not so much songs of war, but songs of family, love and mateship.

“It could have been a big flag waving exercise but it’s not,” he said.

“This is just about real people, real lives, real families, their letters and their personal experiences and there’s so much power and emotion especially when you know every single word is true.”

Lee is currently on the road with ‘The Songs and the Stories in Concert’ tour which will see him take the music of ‘Spirit of the Anzacs’ to audiences for the first time.

The show is divided into two parts, with part one featuring some of Lee’s most important songs and the stories behind them, while part two will feature the songs of ‘Spirit of the Anzacs’ brought to life with the aid of theatrical lighting and a large video screen.

So far the reception to the live shows has been overwhelming for Lee, who is one of Australia’s most loved country music stars.

“It’s been an amazing reaction, very powerful,” he said.

“There’s been the odd tear here and there, but I think overwhelmingly it’s uplifting. I think everybody who sees the show feels uplifted and proud and very grateful to live in this great country of ours.”

Of course for Lee there’s still that lingering feeling that this is more than just an album tour.

“I think that everybody involved in the touring, production, my band, my crew, myself, everybody feels that we’re privileged to be a part of something that is so much bigger than any one of us,” he said.

2015 has been a busy year for Lee, who also released his first book Boy From The Bush, taking readers on a journey through his life behind the hit songs.

“There’s been some highs, some lows and a few catastrophes along the way but all in all it’s been an incredible ride and it was great to be able to write about it,” he said.

Lee is currently working on a new album with his inspiration this time coming from a bar on the other side of the country. “‘The Spirit of the Anzacs’ album was born at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, my new album was born in the carpark of the Iron Clad Hotel in Marble Bar, Western Australia,” he said.

The Blue Mountains Musical Society will present this musical classic which has earned the title of the longestrunning show in Broadway history.

The story is set beneath the beautiful Paris Opera House where the brooding and disfigured Phantom falls for the budding singer Christine.

This show will be the society’s first at the newly renovated Blue Mountains Theatre and will feature a talented cast of 50 performers including Matt Herne as the Phantom, Sarah Namdar as Christine and Touraj Vaziri as the Vicomte Raoul de Chagny.

With an unforgettable score, beautiful costumes, and amazing choreography this is sure to be a production that fans of the show won’t want to miss.

Ê SBS is set to launch a fourth channel, dedicated entirely to food. The unnamed channel will be available on SBS3 in November. As the first free-to-air channel dedicated to food, it will feature “a smorgasbord of food, cooking and travel programs inspired by food, handpicked from around the world, alongside some of the network’s much-loved, locally made shows”. On Monday, October 12, the Creative Fringe will host their ‘Sydney Fringe Voices’ launch party to celebrate a new take on the traditional choir – that requires no singing experience.

American-born Lisa Finn-Powell taught choir in London for 10 years, and after moving to Glenmore Park, wanted to share her enthusiasm and expertise with locals.

Schwimmer will play an American producer brought in to try and save the floundering show. DVD San Andreas

Rated M // KATE REID ‘San Andreas’ gives a terrifying look at what might happen if the San Andreas fault, which runs through Los Angeles and San Francisco, started to shift.

It begins with an earthquake that destroys the Hoover Dam and what follows is the mother of all earthquakes and a tsunami to match.

Ray Gaines (Dwayne Johnson) is a Los Angeles Fire Department Air Rescue pilot who, along with his ex-wife, must race to save his daughter before the city is totally destroyed.

‘San Andreas’ is your typical blockbuster movie, packed full of action, amazing special effects and characters that are a little too one dimensional, which is understand-

able when all they do is spend most of the movie running and screaming.

Still, this was a fun flick, and those who love blockbusters will find plenty to enjoy in this two hour action packed ride. Dwayne Johnson is the perfect hero, believably bad ass and very charismatic and is supported by a talented cast including Carla Gugino as his ex and Paul Giamatti as a Caltech seismologist.

Yes, some of the action sequences are far from believable but we don’t really watch films like this for their realism, do we? Enjoy it as part of a movie night with friends.

The Dead Weather

Dodge and Burn // KATE REID The dirty blues/rock of The Dead Weather is back with the band’s third release ‘Dodge and Burn’.

Headed by rocker Alison Mosshart and featuring Jack (of all trades) White, The Dead Weather have found a nice little niche for themselves in among the pale, watered down rock that’s currently being pumped into the airwaves.

Mosshart once again weaves her magic with dark and angsty vocals which take centre stage supported by the fuzz and heavy distortion of Dean Fertita on guitar and solid rhythm work from bassist Jack Lawrence and Jack White on drums.

Though he mostly takes a back seat to Mosshart’s role as frontwoman, White does lend his unique vocals to tracks like the slightly menacing ‘Three Dollar Hat’.

Once again The Dead Weather have produced a killer album. It’s not surprising though, with the combined talents of the musicians involved.

‘The Martian’ is a film of science, determination and adventure.

After an intense storm in the midst of a manned mission on Mars, the crew are forced to abort.

Not all goes to plan when astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) gets struck by debris on his way back to the spacecraft, leading the crew to believe he is dead as they take off back home.

game plan, Watney gets to work constructing his survival plan as well as some way of contacting NASA on Earth.

After seeing satellite images on Mars and realising Watney is still alive, NASA works tirelessly, along with other specialists to come up with a way to bring him home.

The film presents a case of the waiting game as the audience sits in suspense to see if Watney will make it back to Earth.

It’s a smart movie and is well thought out in terms of how Watney thinks about his survival while he’s on Mars all alone.

The dialogue gets a bit heavy and is sometimes hard to understand when it comes to the scientific talk as it moves at a fast pace, meaning you have to really pay attention to understand it.

Matt Damon is a standout in every one of his scenes.

His performance is made even more special by the fact that he is in most of his scenes alone, with nobody to bounce off.

The cast all worked well together and make you believe that they really are the team at NASA, similar to the impact a movie like ‘Apollo 13’ had.

As with all space movies, the writers and directors have taken a little bit of liberty at times and it does make you cringe a little, but it’s a minor flaw in an otherwise sensational flick.

It’s a long waiting game but one worth sticking around for to see exactly how the team of experts and astronauts work together to bring this one man home.

You won’t regret catching this one.

A Grand afternoon at St Marys Ahead of last Sunday’s NRL Grand Final, hundreds of people from the local business community gathered for the Luke Priddis Foundation’s annual Western Sydney Grand Final Luncheon.

Hosted by Andrew Voss from Fox Sports and Radio 2UE, the day offered a tremendous insight into the Grand Final that was to come a couple of days later.

A panel of NRL greats including Ben Ross, Joe Galuvao, Luke Priddis, Peter Kelly and Jeff Robson spoke about the build-up to Grand Finals and about their career highs and lows.

It was also announced at the luncheon that Robson would become the Luke Priddis Foundation’s latest ambassador.

Entertainment was provided by Denis Carnahan and the Panthers cheerleaders.

40-year-old vines thrive on volcanic soil on Margan’s Fordwich Sill vineyard, regularly giving wines that are rich, soft and have intense citrus-like flavours. And in the case of this Margan 2015 Semillon, this means all about upfront lemon zest, crisp citrus and refreshing sherbet on the palate.

Winemaker Andrew Margan says the 2015 vintage was particularly rewarding for white wines, as full ripeness of the fruit had occurred before the January rains came.

What is Feline AIDS? Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) or feline aids, is a retrovirus that is specific to cats only.

What does FIV do to a cat?

Infected cats may appear normal for years, however, infection eventually leads to a state of immune deficiency – this means that the immune system is unable to protect against infections to its full capacity.

Normal bugs that are found in the environment can cause

severe illness in cats that have a weakened immune system.

These secondary infections are generally responsible for many of the diseases associated with FIV. Can I prevent my cat from becoming infected?

Yes! The best way to make sure your cat does not become infected is by preventing exposure to the virus – the easiest way to do this is by keeping cats indoors and away from potentially infected neighbourhood cats.

A series of vaccinations are also available to help and prevent FIV infections but these vaccinations do not guarantee 100 per cent protection, so preventing exposure is still important even for vaccinated cats.

What happens if FIV is not diagnosed and treated?

Without close monitoring and treatment, secondary infections that occur as a consequence of FIV can progress to life threatening conditions.

Additionally, cats with FIV can develop various forms of cancer, blood diseases or kidney failure.

It is very important to monitor for symptoms and to act on any suspicions you may have about your cat.

Thrills and spills at the annual Sydney 4WD and Adventure Show next weekend

It wouldn’t be a 4WD and Adventure Show without some “adventure” and Peter said the Show definitely has that covered!

“We are very excited to have Team D Max stunt drivers back at the Show this year,” he said.

“Isuzu Team D Max are the best and most popular stunt driving team in Australia. Visitors can stand back and watch as the stunt drivers coast along on two wheels, and take on some mind-boggling inclines and descents – or if they’re game can get in for a free ride.

“A major Show focus is the 4WD test track, which is available for exhibitors to demonstrate new vehicles. Show visitors can watch the new vehicles take on the track, or can experience the ride themselves (with a demonstration driver) on what is the most authentic 4WD experience available at an event.”

Peter said the Engel Bush Camp stage would again be a hive of activity, with camp oven cooking demos, interviews with the Show’s special guests, product reviews and more.

The Fourby Forum was a popular inclusion to the line-up last year, and will again be a Show highlight.

The Fourby Forum will feature different presenters and topics including setting up your vehicle, how to use recovery gear and more.

The Sydney 4WD and Adventure Show is on from October 16 to 18 at the Western Sydney International Dragway in Eastern Creek.

t wasn’t that long ago that Alix Roberts and her dad would watch W-League games together on the couch at their home in Leonay.

Soon the 21-year-old will be starring in the W-League herself after she recently signed with the Western Sydney Wanderers for the upcoming season.

Speaking with the Weekender ahead of Western Sydney’s opening round clash against Adelaide next week, Roberts said she almost can’t believe at how far she has come.

“It feels like yesterday that my dad and I used to watch the W-League every Saturday afternoon together and we

I

always talked about getting there one day,” she said.

“My family has been really supportive throughout my journey but when I made the team dad was probably the most stoked.

“He’s always had a massive impact on me as has my older brother. Dad always believed in me and said ‘one day I’m going to be watching you on television’.”

Roberts’ footballing journey began at the tender age of six when she joined local junior club Penrith FC. Since then her incredible talent and raw determination has seen her career progress in a huge way.

Whilst captaining the Blacktown Spartans in the NSW Premier League competition, Roberts was scouted by

Wanderers W-League coach Norm Boardman, who coaches a rival team in the state-based competition.

“During the Premier League season with the Spartans, Norm, who actually coaches another team, saw me play as did some other scouts who come to games,” Roberts said.

“I ended up getting an email asking me to trial for the Wanderers, so I did for a couple of weeks and soon after was offered a position.”

The midfielder said being chosen to play in the W-League was a dream come true and she couldn’t wait to lace on the boots.

“I’m excited and nervous at the same time,” she said.

“I’m really looking forward to playing with and against some high quality

players. There’s a lot of Matildas (national team) in the W-League and they are people I idolise. I can’t wait to aim up against them.”

Since entering the league in 2012, the Wander Women, as they are affectionately known, have struggled to make an impact on the national stage, finishing eighth (last) in 2014.

Roberts said she hopes to bring plenty of heart and, hopefully, plenty of victories this season.

“I think my strength is my fitness and determination,” she said.

“I might not be the most skilful on the park but I’m really determined to show a lot of heart.”

The Wanderers play Adelaide United next Saturday, October 17.

Naomi looks to cement her position 21-year-old rising cricket star set to make her mark with the NSW Breakers this summer @natetaylor87

s she prepares to enter her third National Women’s Cricket League (WNCL) season with the NSW Breakers, Penrith allrounder Naomi Stalenberg said she’s ready to make her mark on the side like never before.

At just 21, Stalenberg has been in and out of the Breakers line-up for a number years but with some players retiring or moving on this past off-season, she’s set to play a more pivotal role in the coming months ahead.

“I’ve been with the team for two seasons now and this will be my third season,” she told the Weekender.

“With a few girls moving on, it has given me a great opportunity to get in the side and do something for the team.

“Now’s the time for me to excel, keep my spot in the side and really play a big part.”

The NSW Breakers have been a dominant force since the WNCL began in Australia back in 1996.

Since its inception, the Breakers have been the competition’s most successful side, winning 17 out of a possible 19 titles – including the last 10.

Stalenberg said it’s been a real asset to her game to be part of such a successful culture and surrounded by so many talented people.

“Getting to train and play with such experienced players has been a real privilege and honour,” she said.

“I think the success of our team comes down to the talent of our squad. The experience that has been built over the last 10 years has built momentum and I think our preparation each and every year has been outstanding also.”

Stalenberg and her Breakers teammates will kick off the 2015/16 WNCL season today (Friday, October 9) against Western Australia in Perth before returning to the WACA pitch again on Saturday to take on South Australia.

“I’m really looking forward to getting out there and taking every opportunity I can with both the bat and ball,” she said.

Meanwhile, Stalenberg said she’s thrilled with the news that the Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers will play their opening Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) fixture at Howell Oval in Penrith on December 6.

“Getting to play our first home game in Penrith is a really positive thing for cricket in the area and I hope a really good crowd comes down to check us out,” she said.

new annual Open Water Swim event is coming to Penrith later this month with $4500 worth of prize money up for grabs.

To be held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre on Saturday, October 24, the Open Water Swim will feature races for both Juniors (10-13 years, 2.5km) and Opens (over 12 years, 5km).

Race organiser from Nepean Aquatic Centre Swim Club and keen Open Water swimmer Alan Bentley said Penrith has an abundance of swimming talent.

“Seven of our U16 swim club members travelled to Perth earlier this year to compete in the Open Water National Championships,” he said.

“We are aiming as a swim club to create a high quality and well respected local annual Open Water event that will attract the top young swimmers from around the country – we are proud of our club and the local area, and we have world class facilities right here on our doorstep to showcase.”

Already a number of top class swimming clubs from around the state have agreed to take part in the upcoming Open Water

Keen swimmers will be able to compete in a new annual Open Water Swim in Penrith Swim including clubs from Newcastle, Port Macquarie, the Central Coast, Wollongong and the Eastern Suburbs.

To add further incentive, Dukes Real Estate has sponsored the prize of $1000 and a trophy to be awarded to the highest point scoring swimming club.

Individual achievement will also be rewarded with medals to be presented to first, second and third placed male and

females in 20 age categories, from age 10 to 60 years and over.

“This event caters for everyone from competitive athletes looking to achieve qualifying times to social swimmers looking for a challenge, male and female, young and not so young,” Bentley said.

The inaugural Open Water Swim will be held on Saturday, October 24 at 9am.

Registrations are now open and will close

online at 9pm on Wednesday, October 21, with late entries open until 8.30am on the morning of the event.

Cost is $25 for the 2.5km event and $35 for the 5km event.

An additional $10 fee will be charged for late entries.

CRICKET: The Penrith Cricket Club first grade side have bounced back from last week’s loss to St George to defeat North Sydney in Round 2 of the Sydney Grade Cricket competition. Playing in a One Day game at Tunks Park, Penrith batted first scoring 6/254 after 50 overs.

Opening batsman John DiBartolo was best for the Cats with 101 runs.

Peachey named Penrith’s best Panthers reflect on year that could have been at annual Presentation Night took home the Ben Alexander Rookie of the Year award and was named Members Player of the Year.

After being told there was a chance he may not play again following a serious ankle injury in 2014, popular backrower Bryce Cartwright took out the John Farragher Award for Courage and Determination.

Physiotherapist Krystal Sharp was handed the Club Person of the Year award for her tireless work on the sideline and behind the scenes throughout the year.

Fresh from winning the Holden Cup Grand Final on Sunday afternoon, hard-hitting prop Moses Leota was named NYC Player of the Year while recently re-signed utility back Will Smith won the NSW Cup Player of the Year award.

Likeable front-rower Jeremy Latimore and injured NYC young gun Corey Waddell took home the Senior and Junior Education Awards for their dedication to study off the field.

The night, which was themed ‘vintage circus’, was held at the Penrith Panthers Exhibition Marquee and was hosted by Channel Nine’s Tim Gilbert.

The night represents the official end of Penrith’s 2015 campaign.

yrone Peachey capped off an amazing year on Tuesday night by winning the coveted Merv Cartwright Medal at the 2015 Penrith Panthers Presentation Night.

The 24-year-old backrower took out the club’s Player of the Year award following an outstanding season individually for the Panthers that also saw him selected to play for the Indigenous All-Stars, City Origin and Prime Minister’s XIII squads.

Speaking on stage after the announcement, a stunned Peachey said he was surprised to win Penrith’s highest honour.

“I had no idea I’d get this award, I thought Reggie (Reagan Campbell-Gillard) was a sure thing,” he said.

“I just want to thank Gus (Phil Gould) for getting me over here to Penrith and the coaching staff for helping me out with my defence.

“I didn’t expect to get this, so I’m just really happy.”

Peachey had a breakout season in 2014 and continued his good form this season.
