A

journey that began in November last year for Penrith’s Holden Cup team finished in the best way possible last Sunday afternoon with a premiership on rugby league’s biggest stage. After finishing the regular season as minor premiers, the Panthers did the rugby league double by winning their second National Youth Competition decider in three years with a 34-18 win over the Manly Sea Eagles at ANZ Stadium.

The win kicked off a spectacular Grand Final Day at ANZ Stadium and confirmed Penrith’s status as a club on the rise. Rookie Panthers coach Cameron Ciraldo said more than 12 months of hard work and preparation finally paid off for his young troops. “I’m really pleased for the boys, a lot of hard work has gone into this,” he said. “We started training in the first week of November last year and the amount of hard work and sacrifices they’ve made, I’m just really pleased for them.”

The Panthers were the most dominant team of the Holden Cup all year, losing just four games the entire season. Heading into the match against Manly, the Panthers had defeated the Sea Eagles on three occasions already this season and were on track for a fourth victory when they went into the halftime break 16-12 leaders. Despite injuries to star centre Robert Jennings and lock Reed Izzard, the Panthers still managed to pile on the points in the second half. Story continues on » p. 8
